Uber driver’s car stolen Teenager was robbed after making late night food delivery at St Clair on Monday

P

olice believe a food delivery driver who had his car stolen after a dropoff at St Clair on Monday night may have been followed for some time before the carjacking took place.

Detectives have made a public appeal for witnesses to come forward following the frightening incident.

About 11.25pm on Monday, an Uber Eats food delivery driver, aged 19, was driving his black Audi A4 when he stopped to make a delivery at a home on The Grandstand, St Clair.

Nepean Police Area Command Detective Inspector Jason Pietruszka said when the male returned from making the delivery, he was approached by a man armed with a small knife.

“The man is of Middle Eastern appearance with a solid build and threatened the victim with the knife before stealing his personal property and the vehicle before he was seen driving from the St Clair area,” Detective Inspector Pietruszka told the media on Tuesday.

“The offender was also seen with two males in a small white hatchback in the area which we believe are involved in this offence.”

Detective Inspector Pietruszka said police believe it was an opportunistic attack that was targeting the vehicle that has the number plate XLR 81G. “We believe they may have seen the vehicle earlier in the night and the persons were attracted to it then engaged in the criminal offence,” he said.

“They also took the victim’s wallet and threw his phone on the ground, but our main avenue of enquiry is that they followed the person because they liked the look of the car.”

With the victim, who is on a student visa from India, assisting police, Detective Inspector Pietruszka said they are following up different leads and looking for more information.

“The victim is holding up well but is quite shaken as you obviously wouldn’t expect this when you are just trying to work hard to provide a better life for yourself,” he said.

“He has worked hard for his property and people thinking it is their right to conduct themselves in such a way will see the courts frown on such action and take it quite seriously.”

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact police at Nepean Police Area Command or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

We’ll miss you Sizzler... maybe L ast Sunday one of Australia’s most iconic and loved restaurant brands served its final delicacy before its doors were shut for good.

No, it wasn’t an expensive Asian fusion restaurant that you had to book months in advance or a white table- clothed city eatery with a bottle of wine on the menu more expensive than your monthly mortgage payment.

And that delicacy? A slice of toast.

Cheese toast to be exact.

In undeniable proof that buffets and pandemics don’t mix, Sizzler is officially no more.

For many in Penrith, Sizzler and its Mulgoa Road buffet is but a distant memory, thrown in the restaurant graveyard with the likes of the Beef and Barramundi and The Keg. But it has maintained a presence in Australia ever since its 1984 launch, with the last remaining Sydney store in Campbelltown.

As it happens, myself and Weekender colleague Nathan Taylor went back in time earlier this year and returned to Sizzler. The Penrith Panthers were forced to re- locate games to Campbelltown Stadium when the NRL returned from its shutdown, and Sizzler was the perfect pre- game preparation before covering the games.

Everything you loved about Sizzler still existed – that delicious cheese bread, the salad bar and the bottomless soft drinks.

Carpet most likely laid in 1984 and decor that pre-dated the Internet offered some questionable charm.

But regardless of the nostalgia, it was obvious even then that COVID- 19 had killed the buffet.

We promised we’d be back but knew we probably wouldn’t be.

As it turns out all remaining Sizzler restaurants closed on Sunday, ending an era of buffet delight in Australia.

Back in the 1990s, buffets were all the rage.

Not only did we have Sizzler here in Penrith, but there was Oz Family Restaurant and Top One, all with all- you- caneat offerings, plus dine-in Pizza Hut. You would think your family was rich when attending for a birthday lunch – unlimited food piled up on your plate, ice cream until you couldn’t stomach it anymore and more soft drink than any one person should consume.

But it taught us something too.

It taught us to be patient while you waited for a fresh batch of pasta to be delivered or a new plate of spring rolls (which would ultimately end up on the one plate because, well, buffets).

It taught you to queue, it taught you about regret (that usually set in during the drive home) and it gave you an insight into the habits of others.

These days buffets are few and far between, save for a few clubs that still do a terrific job in delivering a restaurant where some slices of roast pork are at home next to garlic bread and a piece of prawn toast.

Our eating habits have changed, and probably for the better, even if that nostalgia in us often offers a distorted reflection of the past.

So farewell Sizzler, thanks for the cheese toast and the memories – my kids will never understand your glory.

And another thing...

The upcoming Sydney season of the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch has been postponed because the actor chose to play the lead role, Hugh Sheridan, is not transgender. True story.

Despite producers auditioning far and wide and choosing who they believed was best for the role, the LGBTQIA+ community say it’s not good enough and the transgender character needed to be played by a transgender person.

What a slippery slope this is. Are we now saying a gay man cannot play a straight man on stage or screen, and vice versa? How utterly ridiculous.

Buffets are all about embarrassing yourself, gorging down way too much food and being proud of your efforts in the value for money stakes.

But it just wasn’t the same in the safer, restriction-based world.

Council’s warning over infrastructure costs associated with growing Aerotropolis ALENA HIGGINS

A

n estimated $2.6 billion worth of local infrastructure is needed to support the Aerotropolis, but a pressing question remains: who’s going to pay for it?

While it awaits further details on the State Government’s Special Infrastructure Contributions (SIC), Penrith Council – in collaboration with Liverpool Council – is moving to ensure its ratepayers are not left footing the bill.

Currently on exhibition until November 30, Penrith Council’s draft Aerotropolis Development Contributions Plan seeks to ensure it can collect development contributions to put towards roads, stormwater and public amenities.

To capture the needed funds, Council has proposed a 6.5 per cent rate levy on developments above $200,000, based on the approximate $39 billion worth of development projected in the Aerotropolis’ initial precincts.

General Manager Warwick Winn said Council was facing a “real dilemma” and was attempting to prevent a troubling trend from continuing.

contributions plan attached to it, and then there’s just no way to play catch up, and in the west we have suffered with that for decades,” he said.

“Unfortunately the land has been zoned without a DCP or contributions plan underneath it. The challenges we face now with the DAs coming in, is because we don’t have a contributions plan ourselves, we can’t level any money.”

But the inclusion of a fixed rate without the word “indicative” or “up to” did not bode well with multiple Councillors, who feared it could curb potential investment and business in the area, suggesting Council wait to see the SIC. In the end however, the original motion prevailed nine votes to four.

Mayor Karen McKeown said Council was being upfront with industry and the government around what is needed and the associated costs.

“We’re building a new city that’s expected to have significant growth, inadequate infrastructure will limit the region’s potential and will leave an unwanted legacy on Penrith ratepayers and Council,” she said.

Council will require ministerial approval before it can implement a Section 7.12 levy in excess of one per cent of the cost of development.

Budget encourages us • Pandemic smashes any hope of surplus • State Government will provide TROY DODDS

T

he message to New South Wales residents is clear: get out and spend.

As the state’s recovery from the COVID- 19 pandemic and its economic impact continues, Tuesday’s State Budget focused on the road to recovery – and it’s all about opening our wallets.

The State Government will help us do that by providing $100 vouchers – split into four lots of $25 – to every adult in New South Wales, aimed at injecting cash into the economy early next year. The vouchers will be able to be spent at eligible restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues such as cinemas and amusement parks.

It’ll be a huge boost to local restaurants desperate to chase lost revenue and attract patrons in the new year and for attractions like Hoyts Penrith, which has been hurting through the pandemic. “Applying for a voucher will be simple and easy and made available via the Service NSW app,� Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello said. “This program is ambitious and the first of its kind in Australia.�

vouchers to encourage spending • Opposition “disappointed” with Budget On a larger scale, the government announced a plan to phase out stamp duty in an attempt to boost the economy, replacing it with an annual land tax on new property transactions.

The pandemic has wiped away any hope of a surplus, with Treasurer Dominic Perrottet revealing a $6.9 billion deficit for 2019-20 and a $16 billion deficit for 2020-21.

Mr Perrottet said nine years of “strong financial management” had put the Government in a strong position to deploy its fiscal firepower, which would be coupled with record low interest rates, to stimulate a strong recovery through responsible borrowing.

“The risk of long-term economic damage is too great if we do not take action, so we are taking advantage of record low interest rates and a strong balance sheet to turbocharge our recovery,” Mr Perrottet said.

“That doesn’t mean abandoning our firm commitment to fiscal responsibility.

This Budget includes measures to chart a course back to surplus by 2024-25, and a strong economic recovery will support that goal.”

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the Budget takes decisive action to meet the needs of people across NSW in the wake of the pandemic.

Joseph Gaerlan from Hoyts Penrith is encouraging people to return to the movies.

“The people of NSW have done it tough over the past 12 months, faced with the triple crises of drought, bushfires and COVID-19,” she said.

“We are doing whatever it takes to stay ahead of the pandemic and provide the support our households, businesses and communities need to get back on their own two feet.”

Employers will get a major recovery boost with $2.8 billion in payroll tax cuts including increasing the threshold to $1.2 million to lower the cost of creating jobs, and businesses that are under the payroll tax threshold will receive $1,500 vouchers to cover government fees.

“Businesses are the backbone of the NSW economy and by making it easier to run a business, we are driving the State’s economic recovery and bringing back jobs,” Mr Perrottet said.

A total of $1.6 billion will be spent specifically on the medical response to the COVID- 19 pandemic, including $500 million for clinics, quarantine arrangements and increased pathology testing and contact tracing.

Opposition Leader Jodi McKay said she was disappointed it was not a “reformist Budget” and didn’t acknowledge the “real challenges” in a post-COVID world.

New laws propose unborn children killed in criminal acts be recognised by courts EMILY FESZCZUK

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is seeking community feedback on new laws.

The bill would also allow grieving families to receive funeral expenses where an unborn child is lost as a result of a motor accident.

These proposed changes could have changed the outcome for drunk driver Richard Moananu, who killed Bronko Hoang’s sister Belinda Hoang, his wife Katherine Hoang and their twin boys, who she was due to deliver the next week.

The horrific crash at Orchard Hills on September 29, 2018 saw Moananu jailed at the start of this month for 15 years with a 10- year non- parole period for the manslaughter of the women.

His sentence took into account the harm inflicted on Mr Hoang who was also in the car but, due to current laws, Moananu was not charged with the deaths of the twins, with Penrith District Court hearing it had

Mr Speakman said the bill contains proposals that aim to acknowledge the loss of victims and appropriately punish offenders.

“These reforms deliver meaningful recognition for grieving families, without undoing longstanding legal principles,” he said.

he NSW Government is looking to amend laws to improve recognition when unborn children are lost as a result of a third-party criminal act.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Attorney General Mark Speakman are asking for community feedback on reforms in the Exposure Draft Bill, which deals with lost pregnancies.

“These reforms will acknowledge the heartbreaking loss experienced by many families,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“Given the sensitivity and complexity surrounding this issue, it is important to engage with the community, victims and experts so that we can achieve meaningful reform together.”

The Crimes Legislation (Offences Against Pregnant Women) Bill proposes to amend the Crimes Act 1900 to add the loss into a serious category of harm and add three years onto maximum prison sentences to recognise the pregnancy loss.

Family members of the pregnant woman, whose unborn child was lost, would also be allowed to give Victim Impact Statements and the name of the unborn child could be included and read out in court.

Council’s car park worry Councillors move to seek assurances over Emu Plains station car park concerns ALENA HIGGINS

lans for a new commuter car park at Emu Plains have received “in principle” backing from Penrith Council, but several potential design flaws have been flagged.

Under the proposed concept, a 750-space at- grade car park will be built on vacant land west of the station, between the existing rail bridge over Old Bathurst Road and the recently closed Rocla site.

A new pedestrian bridge over Old Bathurst Road is also slated to be built, as is a T- intersection at Old Bathurst Road to allow vehicle entry and exit to the car park.

In its submission to Transport for NSW on the joint Federal and State Government initiative, Council supported the improvements “in principle”, saying it will provide “important additional commuter car parking”.

However, it also raised key traffic and access concerns, shortcomings with the footbridge and questioned the suitability of the site with regard to flooding and overland flow.

Critically, Council says the proposal does not align the new car park exit with Smith Street.

“It is essential that this project includes the long-needed signalisation of the Smith Street intersection,” Council says.

Council has flagged concerns about the proposed pedestrian bridge.

“The safety and congestion at this intersection has been a long-held concern that has been amplified in recent years as commuter patronage has increased significantly.”

Council was also critical of the pedestrian bridge.

“The current location does not cater for the high volume of pedestrians that catch the train to and from Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School,” it said.

“It is imperative that this is included.”

Expired Flare Collection

Councillor Marcus Cornish said the bridge must also reflect the heritage of Emu Plains Station and be covered so pedestrians don’t get wet.

“I don’t believe we’re getting very attractive bridges,” he said.

“I don’t want us doing tours of ugly bridges in Penrith.”

Labor Councillor Greg Davies wants confirmation the issues raised have been “covered off” before the project goes to tender.

“I have serious problems with the whole design and construct process of everything that happens with the government at the moment,” he said.

“I think unfortunately what happens is that the design process gets compromised by the construct process.”

Subject to community consultation and planning approval, construction on the new car park is planned to begin in early 2021 with completion expected in early 2022.

rivers from local bus operator Busways have taken the pledge to ‘drive so others survive’ this National Road Safety Week, which runs from November 15 to 22.

They are reminding road users to be vigilant when behind the wheel especially around large vehicles like buses.

With 215 drivers in the Penrith region, Busways is on board with the national campaign as an opportunity to remind all drivers and other road users of the influence they have on our roads.

From 2015 to 2019, 26 people were killed and 556 seriously injured in vehicle accidents in Penrith.

In that same timeframe, 34 people were killed and 295 seriously injured in heavy bus crashes across NSW. Busways Penrith Operations Manager, Andrew Robertson said the National Road Safety Week message is simple.

“Slow down, look out for others, and make safe decisions as poor decisions cause collisions, which includes being safe around buses and not cutting in front of them as heavy vehicles need room to stop,” he said.

“Road users should also exercise caution approaching a bus with its school lights flashing as the lights alert us to a 40km/h speed limit and that children could be crossing the road.”

Man loses licence after second mid-range drink driving charge

A man who downed eight mid-strength beers in two-and-a-half hours before jumping behind the wheel of a car has been stripped of his licence for five months.

Michael Joseph Gauci faced Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with mid-range drink driving.

The court heard the offender had consumed eight Great Northern Super Crisp beers between 12 noon and 2.30pm, before being detected 20 minutes later at Orchard Hills on October 25.

Police determined he was moderately affected with slowed speech and blood shot eyes.

“You were a significant risk not only to yourself but other members of the public,” Magistrate Geoff Hiatt scolded.

“One might have thought that you might have got the message,” he added, noting Gauci had a previous mid-range drink driving conviction back in 2005.

He was convicted, fined $800 and ordered to enter a mandatory alcohol interlock licence for a period of 12 months upon completion of his driving ban.

Man out on parole jailed after high speed police chase

The driver of a car laden with passengers who lost control and slammed into a verge at high speed when he attempted to elude police has been jailed for a minimum of 12 months.

Penrith Local Court heard Jack Telford, 26, was on parole for fraud matters when he reached speeds of up to 140km/hr in a 70km/hr zone about 12.58am on November 14.

His lawyer began his submissions by conceding the threshold for a prison sentence had been crossed.

He said Telford was aware that he was unlicenced and driving an unregistered and uninsured car at the time and “simply panicked” and exercised “extremely poor judgement”.

However, he asked Magistrate Geoff Hiatt to balance the objective seriousness of the pursuit with its relatively short duration when “fashioning” a sentence, and sought a finding of special circumstances allowing Telford a longer period on parole.

The court heard police had intelligence that the car driven by Telford was possibly involved in a number of break and enter offences, which was the reason they were initially tailing him.

The car was later found to be sporting stolen number plates.

Magistrate Hiatt noted the pursuit lasted 27 seconds and injuries were sustained to Telford’s passengers.

He was jailed for 18 months with a 12-month non-parole period and disqualified from driving for three years.

He will be eligible for release on November 13, 2021.

Driver labelled “disgraceful” by unimpressed Magistrate

Keith Anthony Coram has been sidelined for four months after he was busted driving with drugs in his system twice in four months.

Coram appeared before Penrith Local Court earlier this month after being detected on February 15 and May 25.

His lawyer said Coram had been “quite frank and quite honest” to police on both occasions, admitting his drug use.

The court heard on one occasion Coram was stopped for a random drug test, while he came under notice for the other when he was found speeding 97km/hr in a 70km/hr zone at Jordan Springs.

His test results returned a positive reading for both methamphetamine and cannabis.

Magistrate Brian van Zuylen was unimpressed.

“Your disregard for the road rules is disgraceful, really,” he said, noting Coram admitted “I use everyday” to police.

His lawyer sought a non-conviction, pointing to the fact Coram had success-

fully completed the Magistrate’s Early Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) program.

However, Magistrate van Zuylen refused, citing the offender’s poor traffic record.

He was convicted, barred from driving for four months and fined $600.

Adam Nicholas Dillon has been slugged with a fine for drug possession.

Dillon, 29, appeared before Penrith Local Court and pleaded guilty to possessing 2.7g of methamphetamine.

Magistrate Michael Antrum urged him to put a lot of distance between himself and illicit drugs, suggested he take a moment to consider how he would like to be remembered.

“What do you want your tombstone to say?” he asked.

He was convicted and fined $550.

A South Penrith man with a long history of domestic violence offences has been jailed after sending his father dozens of threatening texts.

The man faced Penrith Local Court on Tuesday after his father called police with concerns for his son’s welfare when the texts became more erratic and garbled.

He was subsequently arrested on October 26 for breaching an AVO put in place for his father’s protection.

Magistrate Brian van Zuylen noted the man, who suffered a range of mental illnesses, had received prison sentences for domestic violence in the past, however found special circumstances allowing him longer supervision on parole.

He was jailed for seven months with a one-month non-parole period, making him eligible for release on November 25.

Magistrate urges man to grow up after another drug charge

Neil Nandan has been told he must decide where his priorities lie after he was busted driving with illicit substances in his system for the third time.

Nandan appeared before Penrith Local Court last month and pleaded guilty to ‘driving with an illicit drug present in his blood’ after being caught at Werrington on July 25.

“What’s more important – driving or taking drugs?” Magistrate Fiona Toose demanded.

She told the 26-year-old it was time to grow up.

“Time to be a lot more responsible I would have thought,” she said.

Man “lets himself down” after taking cannabis at party

Shane Robert Troughton will spend the next several months off the road after he relapsed and was caught driving with drugs in his system.

The 47-year-old faced Penrith Local Court and told Magistrate Brian van Zuylen “I’ve let myself down”.

Troughton told the court he had gone to a party the weekend before and “did some cannabis”, adding he had been abstinent for a long stretch up until that point.

“One would think you would know better by now,” Magistrate van Zuylen said, referring to his age.

He noted Troughton came under notice by police when he ignored a ‘no right turn’.

He was convicted, fined $600 and banned from driving for a period of five months.

Penrith: Teen charged after becoming violent at servo

About 11.50pm on Tuesday, November 10, it is alleged a 14-year-old South Penrith youth has attended a service station on Mulgoa Road, Penrith.

It is alleged that he has entered the store and approached the 20-year-old attendant. He was asked to leave due to his behaviour and verbal abuse; it is alleged that the young person demanded cigarettes from the attendant, who has refused this request.

He was again asked to leave and did so.

A short time later he has returned and again approached the attendant, this time it is alleged that he has threatened to stab the attendant, who at this time has called 000. The young person removed a knife from his jacket pocket and held it up. It is alleged that the young person has again threatened to stab the attendant. The attendant walked to a back room for safety, whilst waiting for police.

The young person, unable to get cigarettes, took a drink from the fridge and walked out of the store.

At this time police have attended and arrested the young person. He was charged with ‘robbery armed with offensive weapon’.

The young person was bail refused and will appear in a Children’s Court.

St Marys: Man charged after prohibited weapon found

About 11.00pm on Friday, November 13, police were patrolling the St Marys CBD when they observed a male person standing outside a licensed premises.

Police have had a conversation with the 38-year-old Whalan man. The man’s details were checked which revealed he was wanted on three outstanding warrants.

He was subsequently arrested.

The man was searched, and it is alleged located in a man bag the man was carrying a small metallic item which resembled knuckle dusters.

Police continued to search the bag and

located two small clear resealable bags, one bag containing one bud of cannabis.

The other clear bag contained a clear crystallised substance believed to be methylamphetamine.

The man was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with ‘possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit’, ‘possess prohibited drug’ and ‘use prohibited weapon contrary to prohibition order’.

Jamisontown: Woman caught driving on suspended licence

About 3.00pm on Friday, November 13, police were patrolling Thurwood Ave, Jamisontown. They were alerted by the Automatic Number Plate Recognition System (ANPR) that a nearby vehicle registration had expired.

Police have stopped the vehicle and had a conversation with the driver, a 39-yearold South Penrith woman.

It is alleged the woman knew the vehicle was unregistered. Further checks were made on the status of the woman’s licence, which revealed her licence was suspended.

The woman was charged with ‘drive motor vehicle while licence suspended’ and ‘use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road’.

Colyton: P-plater caught over the limit after accident

About 10.00pm on Friday, November 13, police were called to a motor vehicle accident on Burford Street, Colyton.

Police have spoken with the driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old Colyton man.

It is alleged this man had driven into a parked vehicle. The man was subject to a breath test, which proved positive, due to the man being a P2 driver.

He later underwent a breath analysis that returned a positive reading of 0.046.

The man was issued a notice of suspension on his driver’s licence. The man was charged with ‘special category driver drive with special range PCA’.

Explainer: Class actions The Federal Government has agreed to a settlement of circa $112 million for up to 400,000 welfare recipients who were parties to the Robodebt class action law suit.

The Federal Government introduced an electronic debt recovery scheme which ran from June 2015 until late 2019, sending automated letters to recover debts from welfare recipients who were alleged to have received overpayments (including threatening legal action if debts were not repaid).

In May 2020 the Robodebt scheme was found to be unlawful and the Federal Government announced that it would refund up to $720 million.

On the eve of a trial in relation to the class action, the Government agreed to pay $112 million in compensation and write off a further $398 million in alleged debts to settle the litigation.

The Robodebt recovery scheme came undone as a result of the use of income averaging which took yearly income data from the Tax Office and divided it evenly over fortnightly welfare periods to determine whether or not it had accurately recorded their income. If the automated computer calculation identified a potential discrepancy it would auto generate correspondence to the welfare recipient calling for further information, and in the absence of the provision of that information, would escalate the matter to debt recovery.

This was problematic for people who had gone through a period of work and then a period where they were eligible for a full payment (in other words, with sporadic revenue), who then had to prove that they had been eligible for

the payment at the time they received it. In essence, this shifted the onus of proof in relation to the debt on to the recipient as opposed to the purported creditor, essentially determining that welfare recipients were guilty until proven innocent.

Class actions occur when a lot of people or entities who suffer a similar loss in relation to the same or related events band together to pursue the liable party in a group as opposed to making individual legal claims. This often happens when there are many individual victims up against large scale entities like the government or big banks and insurance companies.

In a class action the plaintiff will essentially mount one fight on behalf of all alleged victims and seek to secure a sum of compensation that is then divided between each member of the class action.

Class actions can take a number of different forms; for example shareholder and investor class actions (on behalf of shareholders against public companies), medical class actions arising from defective medical work (common in the cosmetic surgery industry), financial product class actions (for example against banks or other financial institutions for people who were sold products or services that were misrepresented), and environment class actions (for people who have been affected by environmental contamination or damage from natural disasters that should have been foreseen and/or avoided – for example the Victorian bushfires that started as a result of a faulty government owned electricity substation).

Backing bushfire recovery A year on from devastating fires, researchers focus on vegetation and wildlife EMILY FESZCZUK

L

ast summer NSW experienced one of the most devastating bushfire seasons with bushland reserves in the local Penrith area being affected.

Nearly a year on, researchers from Western Sydney University (WSU) are calling on the community to take part in workshops to research how the native vegetation and wildlife has recovered.

Speaking with the Weekender, WSU Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Bushfire Recovery, Dr Alison Hewitt, said the workshops are part of a larger project.

“We have got some funding through the Commonwealth Government’s Wildlife and Habitat Bushfire Recovery program, so we are aiming to look at endangered ecological communities,” she said.

“We are combining with staff at the University of New South Wales’ School of Aviation to use aerial Lidar imaging and intensive on-ground surveys to investigate recovery parameters, such as bushland structure, biomass and biodiversity.”

With other members participating, Dr Hewitt said they hope that residents will be involved in the research, which is happening on November 24 and 25.

Deerubbin Local Aboriginal Land Council, because we will be working partly on their lands along with students from WSU,” she said.

“We are hoping for community member participants that live in the area, value bushlands and are interested in how they might be fairing after the fire to help with on-land surveys.”

Across the two days, participants will be on the ground in reserves before going to WSU’s Hawkesbury campus.

“We will be at reserves in Castlereagh, Londonderry, Cranebrook, Agnes Banks and Berkshire Park conducting assessments, then we will retreat to campus to discuss what we find,” Dr Hewitt said.

Dr Hewitt said the research conducted will help guide plans in response to fires in bushland areas.

Meanwhile, Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh and Environment Minister Sussan Ley visited Castlereagh Nature Reserve on Wednesday, welcoming $13 million in funding that is assisting bushfire recovery projects such as this one.

“Our community endured a lot through the last bushfire season, and I saw firsthand how this impacted our local flora and fauna when I visited communities in the Mountains and surrounding areas,” Ms McIntosh said.

Lifeblood Executive Director Cath Stone said 31,000 donations are needed every week across Australia to help patients in times of trauma, major surgery, cancer treatment, pregnancy and a host of other situations.

“As restrictions return in SA, and are eased in other parts of the country, it’s essential that blood and plasma donations continue,” she said.

“We saw the absolute best of the community throughout the pandemic with donors continuing to come in, however, this recent trend of decreasing appointments and increasing cancellations is concerning.”

Community urged to have its say on new City Park features

ensory gardens, water features, shaded areas and a green open space for outdoor activities are just a few of the key features proposed for Penrith’s new City Park.

The design captures the ideas and input provided by the local community during consultation earlier this year and Penrith City Council is now inviting further feedback to finalise the design of City Park.

An online survey is open until December 6 for the community to provide input on important design elements including the look and feel of the park, the amount

of shading, and other key features of the park.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the City Park project is a great example of how the community can provide input into shaping the design and delivery of a new open space in Penrith.

“We’ve been working with the community for several years on City Park and the detailed design is the culmination of what we have heard,” she said.

gnes Borg is celebrating her 102nd birthday next Thursday, November 26, and everyone is invited.

The St Clair resident is inviting the community to take part in a walk to wish her a happy birthday.

Mrs Borg’s daughter and carer, Mariza Borg, said her mother, who is the last surviving sibling of 18 children, enjoys the simple things in life, like being outdoors.

“We will start at 4pm at the laneway on the corner of Blackwell Avenue and Cook Parade and we will continue down Blackwell Avenue to Banks Drive and

back to the laneway to end around 5pm,” she said.

“The principal of Blackwell Public School is going to have the children line up along the fence as I take her past, which she will love.”

Ms Borg said she hopes people participate and possibly give her mum a small gift.

“Mum has never really had a fuss made over her and I know she would appreciate people joining part of the walk to give her a birthday wish or even a card,” she said.

“She would be overjoyed if people want to bring her an artificial flower that she can add to the collection in her bedroom.”

Penrith’s Silver Fox Barbershop Quartet is ready to sing again after forced break EMILY FESZCZUK

P

erforming is what the four cheeky seniors that make up the Silver Fox Barbershop Quartet love to do.

After COVID-19 restrictions had stopped them singing locally and around the state, they are officially back and ready to entertain.

Emu Plains member Mal Castledine said it all began when the group, who formed in Penrith in 1999, travelled for their first show in 2006.

“We went to Goulburn to boost the morale when they were in deep drought and from then we have done around 40 performances a year,” he told the Weekender.

“In between performing from Parramatta to Lithgow, at places such as The Joan, Panthers and Penrith RSL, we go right up to the Queensland border, down to the Victorian border and out to Broken Hill.”

With the members aged in their 60s to 80s, Mr Castledine said it has been a strange year for the group.

“We rehearse every Thursday night at my house but only if I give them a glass of wine and a sandwich, so it has become a big part of our lives,” he said.

“We love singing and the camaraderie of it but what we really love is spreading cheer to the community, so we have been missing it.”

Singing acapella, Mr Castledine said the quartet is thrilled to be allowed to start touring again.

“We are excited because we have now been told as we are not a choir and do not use instruments, if we can maintain distance from each other and audiences, we can do what we love,” he said.

“For most schools, charities, churches, hospitals, nursing homes and things like that we won’t even charge, then there is just a small fee for retailers, but we can spread some Christmas spirit with carols.”

With a repertoire of 50 songs, Mr Castledine said there is music for everyone to enjoy.

“We cover The Beatles, ballads, Australiana, carols and hymns,” he said.

“We love the places we visit and the people we get to meet, it keeps us old blokes young. If you’re interested, call 4735 2432.”

ive theatre is starting to return to stages around Sydney and what better way to celebrate than with an exclusive season of the hit musical ‘Pippin’.

This award- winning show will re- open the Sydney Lyric Theatre with a few surprises.

Veteran actor Simon Burke, who stars in the show, said the captivating new production has it all.

“It is a play within a play about a group of performers that go from town to town to tell the story about a young man, Pippin, who is at a crossroads in his life, which is based on an old medieval fable,” Simon told the Weekender.

“It is a gentle story with a lot of meaning that is told with dance, songs from the composer of ‘Wicked’, and extraordinary acrobatics and circus tricks, which take it to a new level.”

Playing the role of Pippin’s demanding father Charles, Simon said the character is a good fit for him.

“Charles is the king, so he is always in control and, in the context of the play, when I am the character of the actor, I am the guy who is the father figure to the whole company,” he said.

“I have been acting since I was 12

- years- old and often mentor younger performers but I also muck around, so with characters who are cheeky there was not a lot of acting required from me!”

With Ainsley Melham, who played the title role in ‘Aladdin’, and iconic TV host Kerri- Anne Kennerley featuring, Simon said the cast is eager to perform.

With so many theatres left dark during the pandemic and performers out of work, he said it’s great to be back on stage.

“Rehearsals have been extremely COVID- safe and it has been weird singing and acting with masks on, so we are hanging to take them off and to perform for you all,” he said.

“We are so grateful that the producers have decided to be one of the first shows to open after theatre lockdowns and Ainsley gets to sing some of the most beautiful numbers, which will be magic.”

Simon said if people want an unforgettable and fun night to celebrate the return of live theatre then they must get tickets to the show.

“This new production is a re-imaging of a classic that brings together the musical theatre and circus worlds for an engaging, humourful and amazing night,” he said.

You might think ‘Freaky’ is your typical body-swap movie, but it has a twist. A big bloody twist!

Veteran actor Vince Vaughn plays “The Butcher” and rising star Kathryn Newton is timid teenager, Millie.

When she magically switches bodies with the town’s infamous serial killer, she must race to reverse the curse and stop a killing spree.

This horror - comedy starts out strong with the slasher side of things.

A little too graphic for me, but the violence does come with the genre.

The comedy is a little slow from Vaughn until he swaps bodies with the high schooler Newton plays.

Hilarious silliness ensues when he fully commits to embodying a teenage girl. The stark contrast between his brute body and feminine personality steals the show.

With jocks, mean girls and the token sassy gay sidekick, they manage to fit every high school stereotype in.

Millie is the exception, managing to be the hero rather than the traditional victim we all expect.

With some good jump scares and laughs throughout, it had the right elements to be something fresh but ended up having a very predictable storyline.

A good choice if you are just craving some popcorn from the cinema.

Drowning tragedies are something we can’t ignore W

e live in a lucky country, where summer is long and provides many opportu nities to have fun in and around the water. However, despite the water safety campaigns and initiatives in existence, drowning remains the single greatest cause of accidental death of children under five in Australia, and last weekend saw three people in NSW drown, including a seven- year- old boy at Jellybean Pool in Glenbrook. Our thoughts are with the families involved.

Accidents happen and children can never be 100 per cent safe around water. With the weather heating up, one of the best things a parent can do to keep their child safer around water is to teach them about water safety as soon as possible, with early swimming lessons and education.

Did you know that 55 per cent of Australian children are not in swimming lessons, and 59 per cent of parents admit they only have basic or deficient swimming skills themselves?

Former Australian swimming coach Laurie Lawrence is a well- respected wa-

ter safety ambassador since launching his ‘Kids Alive – Do the Five’ community service program in 1988. The program aims to educate the public on five impor-

tant steps to reduce the risk of childhood drowning – but can you name the five, and are you practising them? They are: 1. Fence the pool

2. Shut the gate 3. Teach your kids to swim – “it’s great” 4. Supervise – “watch your mate” and 5. Learn how to resuscitate Education should start very early, with parents consistently talking to children and reinforcing these rules around water – never go near the pool without an adult, never climb the pool fence, let an adult know if another child goes near the pool alone, swim between the flags at the beach, be careful in the bath, etc.

There are some great swim safety education resources, songs and stories available through the ‘Kids Alive, Do The 5’ website (www.kidsalive.com.au) to keep learning fun and promote retention, especially for younger children.

We also provide free Water Safety Visits to pre- schools and childcare centres, where we read books and sing songs about water safety with our mascot, Paddles the Platypus, and the Kids Alive Wise Owl. here are many types of artificial sweeteners becoming more commonly used in human foods. The most concerning is

Xylitol.

Xylitol is found in chewing gum, sweets, toothpaste and sugar substitutes for baking.

In humans, it is very slowly absorbed but in dogs it is absorbed rapidly and induces insulin production.

This causes dangerously low blood sugar levels. This can cause seizures, coma and death.

It also causes liver damage which can lead to clotting issues and death.

Vomiting is often the first sign of ingestion with other signs including lethargy, diarrhoea and collapse.

How much causes toxicity?

The amount that can cause toxicity is very low. It is hard to determine the amount of Xylitol in some foods as its concentration may not be provided. It has been estimated that as little as one piece of gum in a dog can cause toxicity.

What should I do if my dog has ingested Xylitol?

Seek veterinary attention as soon as possible. Treatment is more successful the earlier it is started.

To determine if a toxic amount has been ingested it is important to know the concentration in the product and the weight of the dog.

Decontamination may be indicated if ingestion is recent.

There is no antidote to Xylitol so supportive therapy is required. Dogs can still die despite treatment, the prognosis is poor if seizures, coma or liver failure is seen.

How do I know if my dog has ingested Xylitol?

There is no test for Xylitol but low blood glucose is the main finding on blood tests.

How can we prevent toxicity?

The best means is for Xylitol containing products to not be present in pet owning households.

As with most things prevention is far better than cure.

Exercising is important, but overtraining can become very problematic

O

vertraining is a result of long- term stress and exhaustion due to a prolonged imbalance between training and recovery.

As individuals we all have different methods of training and different baseline levels of fitness therefore making it sometimes difficult to gauge or know when you’re overtraining.

Some of the signs of overtraining may include: Fatigue Signs of fatigue can include changes in mood, disrupted sleep, reduced appetite, loss of interest and increased fatigue with relative rest.

As a result this will directly affect the quality of the workout and increase the susceptibility of an injury occurring.

Reduction in strength If the volume of training is too high or you don’t allow much recovery between sessions there will be a reduction in your lifting capacity over time.

Persistent soreness after sessions Do not confuse persistent soreness with DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness).

DOMS is characterised by a disruption to muscle function at a cellular level, which is

quite common to experience 48 to 72 hours post sessions.

Persistent soreness is characterised by increased exhaustion that continues even after adequate recovery time.

Plateaus This occurs when the body begins to adjust to the demands of the exercise but sometimes can also be due to overtraining and you will notice no improvements in performance.

Lack of motivation Lack of interest to exercise is generally a good sign to slow things down with your training routine.

The best approach to avoid the deficits of overtraining is to liaise with a physician to structure a tailored exercise program to best suit your needs along with active recovery and relative rest from activity.

Listening to your body is something people often neglect but is very important to allow for longevity with your training.

So if you believe you might be overtraining and are experiencing some of the signs of this, it might be time to sit back and take stock.

The upcoming holiday break could be a good time to reassess things.

t is amazing how crises bring out both the best and the worst of people and this COVID-19 event has been no exception.

One of things I have encountered a number of times is clients ringing me for advice on what to do about competitors who have used very doubtful processes to steal their clients.

In some instances, they have used my clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s logo and established a business name very similar to theirs.

They have then purchased the domain names not already held by my client and used them to divert enquiries to their own business.

On the face of it, although it is highly immoral, it is not illegal. Why? The reasons why were that they hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t trademarked (different from copyright, that happens on logo design completion) their logo (you can do it yourself, look on business.gov.au and search for â&#x20AC;&#x153;trademarksâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; there is a step- by- step process there), they had chosen an almost generic business/company name and they hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t obtained all the other â&#x20AC;&#x153;dotsâ&#x20AC;? of their domain name.

Although â&#x20AC;&#x153;yourbusinessnameâ&#x20AC;?.com. au is the domain name that identifies your company and declares it as Australian, there are also .com, .biz, .net, and city specific â&#x20AC;&#x153;.â&#x20AC;? as well.

Rent as many variations of your domain name extensions that are available, use one of them as your domain name and web address and â&#x20AC;&#x153;parkâ&#x20AC;? the others, i.e. donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use them.

This immediately makes it hard for those who want to divert net traffic and emails to themselves and away from you.

oyota Australia has advised its customers that it has not announced pricing for the GR Yaris Rallye special edition sports car, due for arrival in dealerships next year.

A Toyota spokesperson said any prices being quoted for the Rallye model were purely speculative.

“We understand the excitement surrounding an outstanding pure performance car like GR Yaris, whether in standard or Rallye guise,” the spokesperson said.

“We will not be communicating pricing for the special edition GR Yaris Rallye to our dealers and the public until closer to the launch.”

Toyota Australia invested heavily in its emerging GR brand, starting pre- sales for the 200kW GR Yaris with a driveaway price of just $39,950 for the first 1,000 cars.

Overwhelming demand resulted in the initial allocation being snapped up inside a week, leading Toyota to release a further 100 cars at a new driveaway price of $44,950.

Next year’s Rallye model will be limited to about 250 cars.

It gains circuit- tuned suspension, front and rear Torsen limited- slip differentials and 18-inch BBS forged alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

Matt creates slice of history N

ew Austin Spurs G League coach Matt Nielsen has come a long way since he fell in love with the game of basketball whilst attending Penrith High School back in the 1990s.

After getting introduced to the game through his mathematics teacher, Nielsen went on to have an incredible career both in Australia and overseas.

Not only did Nielsen help guide the Sydney Kings to back- to- back titles in the early 2000s, but the Penrith product represented Australia at three Olympic Games and also carved out a successful career in Europe.

When he retired in 2013, the former St Marys Senior High School student returned home to Australia and immediately began the next stage of his basketball career as a coach.

In between his two assistant coaching stints with the NBL’s Perth Wildcats, Nielsen spent a year in the United States back in 2014/15 working with the San Antonio Spurs in a player development role.

After impressing during his short stay aboard as well as several coaching spells in the NBA Summer League, Nielsen returned to the US last year after being appointed assistant coach of San Antonio’s G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs.

which saw the Spurs finish with the League’s sixth best record, Austin head coach Blake Ahearn was poached by the Memphis Grizzlies to be an assistant in the NBA. With the new G League season on the horizon, last week the Austin Spurs announced that 42- year- old Nielsen would be the franchise’s next head coach, replacing Ahearn.

Not only is Nielsen just the seventh head coach in Austin Spurs history, but he becomes the first Penrith Basketball junior to achieve such an incredible feat.

In a statement posted online, the Penrith Basketball Association expressed their well wishes to their former prodigy.

“Penrith Basketball would like to send our congratulations to Matt Nielsen on his appointment as head coach of the Austin Spurs G League team in the USA,” the statement said.

“What a fantastic achievement – from the west of Sydney as a Penrith junior to the Sydney Kings and then on to an outstanding national and international career. All the best, Matt.”

Meanwhile, all eyes were on another Penrith Basketball junior on Thursday afternoon with Josh Green expected to be drafted in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Apart from playing with Penrith, he was also impressed by the spirit and culture of what’s now his new club whenever he opposed the Thunder in Sydney’s renowned crosstown derbies.

“It seemed a close-knit group,” he said.

“They represent western Sydney and, having played club cricket for Penrith, I know the area fantastically well. I still have a lot of very good friends from my time there.”

Billings, who has played a total of 51 white ball matches for England, said he was excited to return to the BBL. “It’s a fantastic tournament,” he said.

Top stars honoured Annual Sports Foundation Awards recognise local talent NATHAN TAYLOR

rising football star and an Olympic hopeful were the big winners at the 2020 Penrith Valley Sports Foundation (PVSF) Awards recently.

Long- time PVSF President Rodney Watson announced the lucky recipients at a ceremony held at Emu Sports Club.

While several awards were handed out on the night, all eyes were on the two major categories – Junior Sports Star and Senior Sports Star of the Year.

Taking home the coveted Junior Sports Star of the Year was Glenmore Park teenager Patrick Beach, who is currently overseas living out his football dream.

Earlier this year, Patrick toured the UK with the Australian Schoolboys and was due to play first grade with the Marconi Stallions as goalkeeper. However, he caught the eye of scouts in Northern Ireland and was offered a professional contract with the Larne Football Club. At just 17 years of age, Patrick began his stint with Larne last month.

While Patrick was abroad and wasn’t able to accept his award, this year’s

Senior Sports Star of the Year, Taylah Tsitsikronis, was in attendance despite spending much of her career overseas.

The 26- year- old softballer, who has been in the Australian squad for quite some time, beat out several hot contenders to win the coveted prize.

Billings thrilled to play in Big Bash

New faces for Wanderers Western Sydney announces new recruits ahead of upcoming A-League campaign NATHAN TAYLOR

e’s only been in the role for just over a month, but new Western Sydney coach Carl Robinson has been frantically working the phones to secure talent for the upcoming season.

With the new A-League competition set to kick-off on December 27, the Wanderers have announced the signings of three key players – all on multi-year deals.

Former West Brom, Norwich and Rangers midfielder Graham Dorrans has joined the club on a two-year deal.

With nearly 400 professional games for club and country to his name, the Scotsman arrives with significant experience playing in some of the toughest leagues in world football. Dorrans said he was looking forward to arriving in western Sydney and linking up with the Red & Black.

“I’m delighted to be coming over and grateful for the opportunity,” he said.

“After speaking with the manager (Robinson) and hearing the vision he has for the club and the way he wants to play, I think it’s a brand of football that really suits my game.

“It’s a league I have watched from a distance and really enjoyed watching it, so I’m looking forward to getting over and starting as soon as I can.”

Also joining the Wanderers for the next two years is central midfielder Anthony Lesiotis.

The 20- year- old Young Socceroo had a breakout 2019/20 season with Melbourne Victory, featuring in 23 matches.

Lesiotis said he was ready to get to work with his new club.

“I spoke to Carl and he was interested in bringing me over, I really like the sound of

the project and the plans he’s got for the club,” he said.

“Last season, I learned a lot on what it’s like to play a professional season, playing regular games and learning off other players in big games.

“Hopefully with the Wanderers we can win the league and qualify for the AFC Champions League.”

Rounding out the new signings is goalkeeper Daniel Margush, who joins the club from a recent stint with Perth Glory and three seasons at Adelaide United.

The 22 - year - old shot stopper has

frequented the Australian U23 squad and is set to bolster the Wanderers’ goalkeeping stocks.

“I’ve had a few chats with Carl, and he’s been really positive about the opportunities at this club and that’s really exciting to hear that come from the gaffer himself,” Margush said.

“I can’t wait to learn off both goalkeeper coach Davide del Giovine and goalkeeper Daniel Lopar. I’ve always got an open mind, taking bits and pieces from everybody. I’m excited about that and hopefully I can get the best out of myself.”

CRICKET: Round 5 of the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA) is in the books, with Panthers Cricket Club enjoying another excellent weekend of results. In first grade, Panthers 8/121 defeated Springwood 10/120. In sixth grade, Panthers 6/175 were far too good for Glenbrook Blaxland 9/119.

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks have enjoyed a rare win, defeating the West Sydney Pirates 26-6 in Round 6 of the Gridiron NSW Men’s competition.

Meanwhile, Nepean’s Colts team are back to their very best, smashing the ship out of the Pirates 46-0. This Saturday both teams will look for back to back wins when they take on the Northern Sydney Rebels at Doug Rennie Field in Kingswood.

BASEBALL: The Greater Western Warriors first grade team endured a horror week of results against Cronulla

Sutherland in Round 7 of the NSW State Baseball League competition. In the mid-week game, Greater Western were defeated by the Sharks 5-0. In the weekend game, Greater Western just couldn’t get it together, belted 15-zip.

The Warriors will hope to get their batting issues in order when they face the Ryde Hawks in Round 8.

GOLF: Avondale Golf Club has won the 2020 Eric Apperly Shield, after the match ended in a 3-3 draw and needed to go to a playoff. Avondale’s number one player, Chris Fan, proved to be the man of the moment, as the Northern Suburbs club clinched their first Eric Apperly Shield. It was the second playoff in two years to decide the Eric Apperly Champions. St Michael’s Golf Club looked to be on the cusp of victory after winning the first three match-ups, with wins to Jeffrey Pullen 5/3, Daley Loumains 3/2 and Kelsey Bennett 2 up.

Avondale responded with wins to both William Bayliss (4/3) and Grace Kim (1 up) to set the scene for a grandstand finish as the last pairing fought out a very tight contest. Fan made a clutch up-and-down for a one-up win, forcing the Shield into a playoff. The ensuing playoff was a thriller and, man of the moment, Fan was a little lost for words after the win. “Harrison Crowe is a great player; he’s one of the best players I know,” he grinned. The Eric Apperly Shield is Avondale’s first win in the 70-year-old competition. This year’s competition was also historic for the inclusion of women in the teams.

CRICKET: Penrith are in a winnable position against Hawkesbury in Round 6 of the Belvidere Cup. Playing in a TwoDay match at Howell Oval, Hawkesbury won the toss and elected to bat first.

The visitors got off to a slow start before batsman Dale McKay went berserk, scoring an incredible 143. Hawkesbury would later be dismissed for 262, with Ryan Fletcher the best of the bowlers for Penrith taking 4/55. When Penrith hit the crease later that day, they were 0/27 before stumps with Ryan Hackney on 17 not-out. Both sides will return to Howell Oval this Saturday morning for day two.

familiar face is returning to the country, with explosive English batsman Sam Billings signing with the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season.

Keen-eyed locals may recognise 29-year-old Billings, who was a popular and valued member of the Penrith Cricket Club during the 2013/14 NSW Premier Grade cricket season.

Since then, Billings has gone on to become one of the biggest names in English cricket and is regarded as one of the world’s most sought after T20 players.

The Prince Harry look-a-like joins the Thunder in scintillating form after his memorable 118 for England in the recent One Day series against Australia.

He scored his century after overcoming a powerful pace attack spearheaded by Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood to hit 14 boundaries and two sixes.

Billings will arrive in Sydney at the end of England’s One Day and T20I tour of South Africa. He said he had good reason to pad up for the Thunder, feeling confident about the campaign ahead.
