imes are tough according to Penrith’s younger job seekers, who are finding that a lack of experience is stopping them from entering the workforce. Paige Carter is 20-years-old and has gone back to studying because she hasn’t been able to find work. “I worked at McDonald’s through high school, that was my last job in 2009,” she said. “I must have applied for over 1,000 jobs now but no-one will hire me because I don’t have the years of experience they say they are after.” Ms Carter has completed one year of animal studies with TAFE and is now preparing to graduate as a veterinary nurse with a Certificate 4 qualification in November. But even as she approaches the end of her studies, finding a job in her chosen field is still difficult. “Every place I have applied they want three years of experience as a minimum, there’s no opportunities at the entry level,” Ms Carter said. 19-year-old Lauren Murphy agrees. “I am studying through online university and so am available to work full-time. I have years of experience in hospitality but I cannot find work anywhere,” she said. “I want to work in Penrith, but I have applied for over 100 jobs and I keep getting turned away.” Ms Murphy is studying to be a social worker, but cannot gain placements in her chosen field until next year.

Tragic waste of life 17-year-old killed in horror Penrith car crash KATHERINE TWEED

A

17-year-old killed in a horror car accident in Penrith last weekend has been remembered by family and friends as a teenager with an infectious laugh who always put a smile on the faces of others. Emergency services were called to the fatal two-car accident on Andrews Road just after 10pm on Friday, July 11. “Police have been told a Datsun ute and a Hilux ute were both travelling east when a collision between the two vehicles has occurred,” said a police spokesperson. “Ambulance Paramedics attempted to revive the 17-year-old male driver of the Datsun; however he died at the scene.” The 17-year-old passenger of the Datsun suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment, while the 17-year-old male driver of the Hilux was uninjured. Friends and family of Philip Vassallo, the driver of the Datsun, which was his prized possession, took to social media to express their grief. “It’s tragic you had to go but at least you left driving the car you loved,” wrote one friend, Angus Ehrl, on the teenager’s Facebook page.

It has been such a pleasure to watch you grow up into the young man

you became,” said another mourner, Suzie Koutsouradis. Police from the Crash Investigation Unit established a crime scene and continue to make enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Students have returned to their studies at St Clair High School this week, just weeks after a devastating fire. While it has been a disrupted first week back from the holidays, it’s essentially business as usual for the school, with repairs and rebuilding to the damaged area continuing. “We will bounce back as a school and we will make our school even better than it already was,” said St Clair High School Principal, Chris Presland. “As the new school term begins, it’s time to roll up our sleeves once again and get on with the job.” The school has done a tremendous job in keeping students and parents up to date in the weeks following the fire.

Ross Fowler North Ward Penrith City Councillor

It’d be nice to live in a world where revealing you’re gay didn’t come with days of publicity, as if it still remains some extraordinary rarity that we all can’t quite grasp as normal. Unfortunately, we don’t live in that world and neither does former Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe, who last weekend took the incredibly brave step of revealing his sexuality during a highly paid television interview. Brave because despite how far we’ve come, we still live in a society that often doesn’t react well to such revelations. Brave because Thorpe would know that he’ll now become an inspiration to some, a hero to others and a source of anger and hatred for a minority that to be honest, aren’t worth his time. He’s not asking to be a poster boy but he probably will become one by default. There will be a time in the future when the news that someone is gay won’t even create a ripple when it comes to the news cycle or public perception. Unfortunately we’re not quite there yet, which is why Thorpe coming out the way he did in front of such a huge television audience is vitally important. The more high profile people who reveal their sexuality, the more people who still live in a world where they’d like to pretend being gay is simply a lifestyle choice or phase will start to realise the error of their ways and just how smallminded they are. Being gay hasn’t made Ian Thorpe any less of a man or a human being. It doesn’t and shouldn’t make us any less proud of his extraordinary efforts in the swimming pool at the highest level in the world. Problem is, there are people out there who just can’t get past the ridiculous notion that it’s their job to pass judgment on others. Let me introduce you to FamilyVoice National President, Dr David Phillips. He sent out a press release on Monday evening

that unfortunately sums up why Thorpe coming out is news in the first place. “Many people have warmly welcomed champion swimmer Ian Thorpe’s decision to come out as a gay man, but is it really a good thing?” he said in the opening paragraph of what can only be described as a homophobic rant. “Ian had previously said he was attracted to women, that he loves children, and he wants to have a family one day. Should we really be celebrating his decision to embrace gay sexuality? “Ian has never had sexual relations with a man. He may find that the gay scene, which will now pursue him relentlessly, may not be all that he is hoping for. Monogamy and fidelity are the exception rather than the norm in same-sex relationships.” Dr Phillips has some advice for Thorpe, which I am sure the swimmer will blissfully ignore. “I would encourage Ian Thorpe to consider the experience of some other young men who have had homosexual feelings. Sometimes, some of them change – such as Luca di Tolve, who once was gay, but is no longer that way. Luca’s story is told in a rap song,” he said. We’ve asked Dr Phillips to stop sending press releases to the Weekender. The comments made by AFL commentator Brian Taylor last weekend, in which he said a player looked like a “poofter” may be unfortunate and absolutely inappropriate, but it is people like Dr Phillips you really need to shake your head at. Everyone can have an opinion on anything they like – that’s the great thing about the society we live in – but there’s a time when you overstep the mark and show a general lack of understanding and respect. Dr Phillips has found that mark. Many people have asked this week “why” this is news. Thorpe has perhaps helped in ensuring that one day, it won’t be.

P

enrith’s pets appear to be on their best behaviour after recent statistics on dog attacks showed that numbers are stable. In the January to March 2014 period there were just seven reported incidents of dog attacks in the Local Government Area. One person was seriously involved and three people were less involved in the incidents, and a total of four animals were attacked. Similar numbers have been reported in previous months. This compares to 2011, when between July and September there were 19 incidents, 18 animals attacked and two people involved seriously. Noel Fuller, who is a ranger and Penrith Council’s Animal Services Coordinator said that in Penrith, most dog attacks involve another animal. “In Penrith, it seems to be that the majority of attacks involve another animal. This can be because the dog is territorial of its own space, or that it is loose and becomes frightened by other animals, he said. “It is also important that if people have an animal and their home is being attended by a service person, that they

EMPLOYMENT

Please give youth a chance Local businesses encouraged to find positions for younger job seekers

local news

Story continued from » p. 1 “In my personal experience employers don’t seem to be interested in people who are studying, but my study commitments are relatively small – I only need two weeks off in November for exams and that’s it,” she said. “I think employers need to be flexible. If you don’t fit exactly what they have in mind they are not willing to give you a chance.” And these two young women are not alone in their frustrations. According to the Brotherhood of St Laurence, who monitor youth unemployment, those between 15 and 24-yearsold experience a much higher rate of unemployment compared to the general population. In Penrith, youth unemployment is 11.7 per cent, compared to an overall unemployment rate of approximately five per cent. And the length of unemployment for young people is increasing, causing major concerns. In January 2008, the average duration of unemployment for a young person in Australia was slightly above 16 weeks. More than five years later – by February 2014 – the average duration had risen to

nearly 29 weeks according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. “The experience of being young and unemployed in Australia has painfully changed. More than 18 per cent of the overall 257,000 unemployed young people in Australia are now consigned to the long-term unemployment queue,’’ said Brotherhood of St Laurence executive director Tony Nicholson. “Our globalised economy is coming down really hard on our young people, especially those without work experience or tertiary education. It’s as simple and as complex as that. “There is now an overwhelming and urgent need to do more to secure the future for a new generation. “As parents, communities and as a nation, we need to act now to tackle the crisis of youth joblessness and restore hope.’’ Paul Richards, site manager for Mission Australia’s Employment Solutions services in Penrith says the local youth are still experiencing the effects of the Global Financial Crisis. “The continued rise in youth unemployment means that many young people are at risk of falling through the cracks,” he said. “Throughout Australia, our youth were

the biggest casualty of the Global Financial Crisis and they haven’t made it back into the workforce as the economy has recovered. “As the youngest, least-experienced employees they were the first to go and the last to return.” He says that there are some youth in Penrith who are finding employment especially difficult due to family issues. “Young people in the Penrith area are facing a number of challenges when looking for work: many of our young people come from families of inter-generational unemployment,” he said. “When young people grow up in an environment of unemployment it impacts on their own ability to engage in education and work, increasing their chances of ending up long-term unemployed themselves.” But it’s not all bad news, and there is light at the end of the tunnel. “The good news here in Penrith is that we have a lot of fantastic local businesses who we are working with to give these young people a go by offering them entry level positions,” Mr Richards said. “These businesses recognise the potential in these young people and support them to work through and overcome their barriers to secure long term employment.”

Police snapshot Kingswood: Police search for man after restaurant robbery

Penrith: Witnesses to fire urged to come forward

Staff at a Kingswood restaurant have been threatened in an armed robbery incident that has police appealing for information from the public. Just after 8pm on Wednesday, July 9, a man entered the Bringelly Road restaurant with his face covered and armed with a knife. Police have been told the man threatened a female staff member before taking cash from the register and running from the premises. No-one was injured during the incident. Police from St Marys Local Area Command are investigating and are calling on the public to contact them with any information about the incident. Police are also searching for a man who may be able to assist them. He has been described as being of Caucasian appearance, with an average height and build.

Witnesses to a house fire in Penrith last week are being asked to come forward and share their story with police. At about 1.45am on Thursday, July 10, emergency services were called to a house fire at The Crescent, Penrith. When police attended, the house was well alight and neighbours had to be evacuated. One person was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Police believe the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Investigations are continuing and though police do not know what caused the shock blaze, they are treating the incident as suspicious. Police are calling on witnesses to this fire, or anyone who noticed any suspicious behaviour in the area from 9pm the night before, to come forward.

Jordan Springs: Residents asked to keep watch

Penrith: Teenager busted while trying to steal shoes

Penrith police are investigating a spate of thefts from building sites in Jordan Springs last month and are calling on the public for information. Between June 18 and June 19 an unknown number of offenders broke into at least three building sites on Greenwood Parkway, Jordan Springs. A number of building materials were stolen from each site, which included pumps and exhaust fans. Anyone with information on these incidents or anyone who notices a person entering a building site outside usual tradesmen hours should contact Penrith police as soon as possible. Police are keen to catch the offenders and stop any further incidents from occurring.

A teenager has been handed a criminal infringement notice after he was caught by security stealing from a local store. At about 12.45pm on Tuesday, July 8, police were called to a variety store in a local shopping centre. Store security had apprehended a 19-year-old from Lithgow who had selected a pair of shoes before leaving the store without paying for them. After police arrived at the scene, they handed the man a criminal infringement notice for stealing. woman who may have information about an assault and attempted bag snatch incident on one of St Marys’ main streets is being sought by police. A 26-year-old woman was making her way along Queen Street at about 7pm on Wednesday, May 7, when without warning she felt a violent tug on her shoulder. The woman fell to the ground as a result of the pull before realising a person was trying to steal her handbag. She was slapped and punched in the face before the unknown assailant ran

away towards St Marys Railway Station. The woman managed to keep hold of her handbag. St Marys police have released CCTV images and a description of a woman who could assist them in their investigations of the incident. “The woman depicted in the images is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance with a dark complexion, 20 to 25-years-old, with a thin build, dark brown hair tied-up in a bun and wearing a dark-coloured singlet and black jeans/tights with a white pattern down the side,” a police spokesperson said.

Breakthrough: Six charged over invasion KATHERINE TWEED

@ktweed_

S

local news

ix ‘Brothers For Life’ gang members have appeared in court this week, charged over a home invasion and shooting incident in Castlereagh that occurred last year. It was around 9.30pm on Monday, October 14, 2013, that police allege a group of men entered a property on Castlereagh Road, Castlereagh. The men allegedly found a resident inside the home, in one of the bedrooms, and threatened him. Police allege the group of men then shot the 26-year-old’s dog before firing a number of shots at the floor of the home. The victim was able to escape from the men and soon after, a neighbour contacted police, who attended the home. The dog was injured but survived the incident. Now, there’s been a breakthrough.

“Detectives from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad (MEOCS) undertook inquiries into the incident under Strike Force Sitella, an ongoing investigation into a number of shootings in Sydney during 2013,” a police spokesperson said. “In recent weeks, MEOCS detectives have charged six men; a 31-year-old, a 29-year-old, a 25-year-old, a 24-year-old and two 22-year-olds, in relation to the Castlereagh shooting.” The men have been charged with a range of offences including animal cruelty and shooting a firearm with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The case involving Farhad Quami, Mumtaz Quami, Navid Khalili, Fazal Bari, Mobin Mirzaei and Jamil Quami, all members from the ‘Brothers For Life’ Blacktown chapter, appeared before Burwood Local Court on Monday, July 14. The case will appear back before the court next month.

Flooded with concerns “Not everything that is fair is right” says Fowler as debate heats up at Council

enrith Councillors have ignored the advice of a floods expert and its own staff to put to public exhibition a development application to fill in flood affected land in Emu Plains. With a history reaching back to 2006, the battle to have the 22 hectare site at the corner of Old Bathurst Road and Russell Street, Emu Plains rezoned from rural flood affected land to industrial has been nothing short of complicated. 1-4 Old Bathurst Road stretches down to the Nepean River and is bordered by residential development. After lengthy consultation with the Department of Planning and Infrastructure, Council was ordered to ensure the development satisfied the local Floodplain Risk Management Plan before putting it on public exhibition. Penrith Council, however, has not completed a Floodplain Risk Management Plan for the area. Instead, an independent expert was called in to verify that the flood modelling done by the site owners was up to standard in the absence of a Management Plan. Independent expert, Dr Ian Joliffe of GHD said he does not support the re-zoning. “There may be some issues with my

Not happy: Ross Fowler says Council should have sought advice first interpretation... but I believe the proposal would change the flooding levels in the area,” he said. “The proposal will create significant

flood impacts on adjoining properties for larger design events.” A flood expert hired by the site owners has suggested that there would be only

small impacts on flooding levels. Questions were also raised over whether Council is legally allowed to change flood affected rural land to industrial use. Cr Greg Davies argued that the land should not be sterilised simply because it is flood affected. “My view is that we should seek legal advice, commence public consultation as this will involve seeking advice from State Agencies and let the public have their say,” he said. Cr John Thain said it was only fair that the re-zoning be put to public exhibition. “The owners have jumped through every hoop to meet the requirements of the Department of Planning and Council staff, it is time to be fair,” he said. But Mayor Ross Fowler said that not everything that is fair is right. “I am philosophically opposed to filling in flooded lands. If you were going to do it for this site, it should be looked at for the whole area including Boral, not simply this application that could create adverse impacts on residents,” he said. Cr Fowler, Cr Bratusa and Cr Aitken moved that Council seek further legal advice first, but the motion was defeated. But the majority of Councillors supported the proposal being put to exhibition with legal advice being sought simultaneously.

Penrith is certainly catering for adrenaline junkies these days, but we have so much to offer in relation to the arts, culture and innovation. This week The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre is featuring ‘Food’ – produced by Force Majeure & Belvoir. It’s a show that sold out in several cities and is among the best theatrical works being produced in Australia at present. The Penrith Regional Gallery is exhibiting ‘Winter Light’ until August 24. It includes works by internationally acclaimed video artist Bill Viola, electronic art by Shanghai-based collective island6 (or Liu Dao), a series of colourful paintings by abstract expressionist Sydney Ball and pieces by modernist James Cant. The gallery is also taking submis-

sions for the Winter Light Digital Film Competition until August 4. It’s asking entrants to wow the world in less than five minutes. We have a vibrant arts and cultural scene in Penrith and an abundance of talent. Our City has become an adrenaline seeker’s paradise in recent times, but adventure comes in many forms. Adventure can be found in arts and culture – anything really that satisfies an inquiring mind. It’s an exciting time in the marketing of Penrith – Capital of the New West. No dream is ever too small. No adventure is ever too big.

Labor Candidate for Mulgoa, Todd Carney has blasted the State Government’s confirmation that it would no longer fund suburban sports stadiums, saying it “kills off” venues like Sportingbet Stadium in Penrith.

“Sportingbet Stadium is a part of our community but the Liberals have decided it’s better to let it rot than allow future generations the benefits of this local sporting asset,” Mr Carney said following last weekend’s reports.

Sharpe’s claim not quite right Opposition called it a ‘downgrade’ of security, but police say new system is better

CASSANDRA O’CONNOR

A

ssistant Commissioner for the Transport Command, Max Mitchell, says the NSW Police Force has implemented a better model for managing crime on trains after the NSW Opposition this week claimed that Guardian Services had been axed to the detriment of passenger safety. Shadow Minister for Transport, Penny Sharpe claimed that Guardian Train Services, which provide additional security on trains on Friday and Saturday nights, had been scrapped. Guardian Train Services were introduced in October 2010 by the previous Labor Government and included dedicated Transit Officers on the train; CCTV monitoring of services arriving at stations; and increased security at major hubs. There were two dedicated Guardian Services to Penrith. “Dedicated Guardian Train Services give rail commuters piece of mind about getting home safely on Friday and Saturday nights,” Ms Sharpe said. “This is a significant downgrade of security on our rail network that leaves passengers to fend for themselves if there is a threat to their security on their train.”

Police working on Operation Rolling Shield But the Assistant Commissioner said that Guardian Services had been replaced, not axed, by a more functional police service called Operation Rolling Shield.

“Operation Rolling Shield was launched three weeks ago and this has occurred after we spent a year running the Guardian Service,” he explained.

“Guardian Service is a security model, and after collecting our own observations and evidence, we found that the service was not adequate as it was focused on only 14 trains. “We found that 95 per cent of passengers who caught the Guardian Service trains were not doing so for the service, rather, because they wanted to get from point A to point B.” Operation Rolling Shield, however, is a whole of network approach based on police methods and models. “Operation Rolling Shield is based on police intelligence, putting police at locations that are known hotspots and where there is a risk of antisocial or criminal behaviour,” Mr Mitchell said. And there has already been success with the Operation. “In two weeks we have made 14 arrests between Newcastle and Wollongong and across the network. We have also handed out 500 infringement notices,” he said. “In recent weeks we have done a lot of work on the Western line from Seven Hills, Blacktown to Penrith and the Blue Mountains and there is more work to do. “But our ultimate goal is to stop crime, that is our intention.” Do you feel safe on our trains? Cornish rubbishes idea

More than 12,000 users – mostly small business people – have taken a free course at the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Online Learning Centre since it launched a year ago. The Online Learning Centre is available at www.fairwork.gov.au/learning and has a range of interactive courses for business owners and employees. “We are always looking for new and innovative ways to help businesses understand and meet their obligations and acquire the knowledge they need to run their business in a productive way,” said Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James. The courses have been considered a major success.

enrith Council has endorsed a new Regional Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy to improve recycling and reduce waste going to landfill. But Cr Marcus Cornish has coming out swinging, saying that the document “deserves to be recycled itself”. Addressing Councillors on Monday evening, Western Sydney Regional Organisational of Councils representative, Amanda Bombaci said that the strategy would better coordinate waste management across the region of 10 councils. “We are looking at various ways to increase recycling given that population growth in western Sydney will require additional waste management infrastructure in the future,” Ms Bombaci said. The strategy aims to divert 70 per cent of waste from landfill by 2021. The Councils will also work together to reduce litter by 40 per cent. Infrastructure is also a focus, with the aim to either build, upgrade or facilitate 10 community recycling centres by 2021. But Cr Cornish said that an immediate strategy to help increase recycling is already at our fingertips.

App will help An innovative new mobile app will help victims of crime and their families navigate the justice system. State Member for Londonderry, Bart Bassett said the app was part of the NSW Government effort to do what it could to ease the experience of victims of crime in the criminal justice process. “This app makes it easier and simpler to get information about the court process, support services and victim’s rights,” he said. “It provides information and guidance for victims from the time of the crime until after the court process has finished.” The app is available to download from the App and Google Play stores.

“How are people supposed to recycle more when they only have fortnightly recycling collection? The logical answer seems to be that more frequent collections would result in more recycling,” he said. Council staff informed Cr Cornish that there would be an opportunity to debate

such changes when Council’s waste collection contract ends in 2017. Cr Karen McKeown said that Penrith offers a great service for residents. “Our waste recovery services have been recognised with numerous awards,” she said.

Council hopeful community upgrades will be approved by State Government

Council has plans to upgrade Werrington Lake pedestrian bridge Penrith Council has put together a bid to win the lion’s share of funding from the 2014 State Government Community Building Partnership Program. In 2014, there is a total of $400,000 available for each seat of Smithfield and Londonderry, and $300,000 each for Penrith and Mulgoa through the program, which aims to improve community infrastructure. In Penrith, Council is proposing an ‘Interactive Active Zone’ for Tench Reserve at a total cost of $94,000. It would include new shade for the northern playground, which Council is already upgrading, as well as a wireless internet hub that would be accessible throughout the River Loop Walk. Werrington Lakes is a much loved public space, and to provide further infrastructure for the local community there, Council is asking for funding of $112,500 to help upgrade the pedestrian bridge. “The bridge provides a critical link in the local pathway network around the lake, and is often used for recreational activities,” Council said. In Mulgoa, Council would like to install a health and fitness zone near an existing amenities building in Myrtle Road Reserve, Claremont Meadows. “The equipment will be modelled on

a number of successful installations of this type of equipment undertaken by Council over recent years, including two piloted in Glenmore Park. This project will create an active exercise facility for Claremont Meadows,” Council said. The total estimated project cost is $100,000. And in Erskine Park, which

“The bridge provides a critical link in the local pathway network around the lakes, and is often used for recreational activities”

just lies in the seat of Smithfield, Council would like to see the playground at Kestral Crescent Reserve replaced at a total cost of $75,000, narrowly edging out plans for landscaping and floodlighting at Peppertree Oval, Erskine Park. If successful, Council will contribute to half of the cost of each project. The funding will be announced in December.

Labor angry at TAFE changes The future of the state’s education hangs in the balance, according to the NSW Opposition who have accused the State Government of “taking an axe” to the TAFE system and its students. Opposition Leader, John Robertson was joined by local Labor candidates, Prue Car, Todd Carney and Emma Husar, at TAFE NSW’s Kingswood College last week to campaign against alleged cuts to the TAFE system. “TAFE has been up until recently accessible and affordable for everyone. That is now disappearing,” Mr Robertson said. “People need to be able to get access to TAFE to get skills so they can go and get a job. This Government is dismantling TAFE, making it unaffordable and harder to access.” The Opposition say that 40 per cent of students at TAFE are set to pay between $500 and $1,500 more for their courses after changes commence on January 1. Labor Candidate for Mulgoa, Todd Carney said that as a former TAFE student himself, he knows the importance of an affordable system. “People in western Sydney deserve a TAFE system that works to give them the best opportunities in the future; whether that is for a student leaving school or an older person who is looking to change careers,” he said. Liberal State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said that it was “a bit rich” of the Labor Opposition to accuse the current Government of neglecting TAFE students when it is continuing to heavily subsidise courses moving into the future. “Too often in the past we have told students to fit into the existing system but now we are making sure that we are fitting the system around them,” Mr Ayres said. - Katherine Tweed

Hostage drill a success Training exercise proves officers are ready for anything CASSANDRA O’CONNOR

here were dramatic scenes at John Morony Correctional Complex last week as specialist operations teams coordinated the movement of inmates involved in a hostage situation. Fortunately it was all a drill. An elite team of 70 correctional officers devoted to responding to any major emergency in NSW prisons used the mock-up to show they are more than ready to maintain order in an emergency. Attorney General and Minister for Justice Brad Hazzard and Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin watched on as Corrective Services NSW’ specialist Security Operations Group (SOG) successfully resolved the mock hostage scenario at the Londonderry complex. “I was extremely impressed by these officers’ tactical and negotiation skills, and their command of Corrective Services NSW’s weaponry and K9 teams,’’ Mr Hazzard said. “Fortunately this sort of hostage scenario has rarely occurred in NSW prison history. “However it’s extremely reassuring to know these men and women are more than prepared to respond to the worst as they uphold the very best security standards for our prisons.’’ Mr Severin said the day’s training was business as usual for the SOG. He said the specialist team was also prepared to deal with the potential scenarios of barricaded cells, escapes and riots and even train other officers to respond to potential security threats. “The job of correctional staff is an inherently risky one so we take a multi-faceted

The training operation underway at John Morony Correctional Complex approach to maintaining order in prisons,” Mr Severin said. “The SOG also uses K9s to search visitors, inmates and cells to restrict access to

potential weapons, while our centres use security screening and strong intelligence gathering to keep across any potential security threat.’’

Feet are a focus during National Diabetes Week KATHERINE TWEED

eet might be the last thing on a person’s mind when they are diagnosed with diabetes but according to local podiatrists, they are not to be forgotten. With National Diabetes Week in full swing, podiatrists are raising awareness of the importance of foot health in diabetics with the hope that community education might lead to a lower rate of diabetesrelated amputations. Nepean Podiatry Principal Podiatrist, Jefferey Jenkins, said it’s an important issue to address. “Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia, with approximately 1.7 million Australians being affected,” he said. “We also have the second highest rate of diabetes-related amputations in the developed world and diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation in Australia.”

There’s long term complications and issues associated with diabetes too, according to Ms Jenkins. “Every week, 85 Australians lose toes, feet or even their legs because of diabetes complications,” he said. “Up to 85 per cent of these diabetic foot complications can be prevented through education and awareness.” Diabetes can cause damage to the nerves and blood supply to the legs and feet, which puts a person’s feet at risk. “This damage is more likely if you have had diabetes for a long time, your blood glucose levels have been too high for an extended period, you smoke or if you are inactive,” Mr Jenkins said. “If you have diabetes, make it a priority to visit a podiatrist at least once a year.” As part of National Diabetes Week, Nepean Podiatry is holding free diabetic foot screenings and will be providing foot health education and advice until Saturday, July 19. For information, contact Nepean Podiatry on 4732 5188.

This is so sad and tragic, it really scares me to see this so close to home when I myself have a young son on his P plates. A spur of the moment thing gone horribly wrong. May God look over this family and guide them through this journey. ANITA GODDARD

Thank goodness no other cars were coming from the other direction, my girl comes home from work at that time. YVONNE WARNER

High price to pay

So sad, my heart goes out to his parents. MICHELLE DELPH

Unfortunately you can’t put an old head on young shoulders, and this young man has paid the price, a high price to pay for a young, inexperienced mind, hope that other young people can learn from this. OWEN STEPHENSON

Cops deserve our thoughts too So sad, I called the police to an accident in front of my house, P plater also, he said he was just going too fast, he was honest. The same police that attended the

Pain for parents

Also on Facebook this week, we asked locals what they thought about Nepean River and the need for more restaurants and cafes...

Parking needed Great idea but a lot of thought needs to go in to the parking. It’s hard to get a spot sometimes and people parking wherever they like are making using the boat ramp and facilities difficult. There is nowhere to park a car with a boat trailer on busy days – it’s driving

the people away who actually use the river! KAREN POLATOS

More takeaways needed Great idea. We definitely need more cafe/restaurants down at the river. Over the last few years the amount of people using the river has increased so much. I love the Coffee Club but it is quite busy and noisy on the weekends and the play equipment is not really toddler friendly but in saying that neither is the play equipment at the river. A fish ‘n’ chip shop would do extremely well with families just wanting an easy dinner on a summer day but only if they don’t rip everyone off with the prices. MICHELLE BOURKE

Draw card potential More restaurants and cafes is something I have thought would be fantastic along the river for years. We have this jewel in the city that really nowhere else in the west have apart from Parramatta and we could make our river/city a real draw card if it was carefully developed with boutique cafes and restaurants. Bring it on I say!! KEV SALMON

Underutilised area It is such a prime spot. Every time I drive past I make comment about why is this area not utilised better and give the people of Penrith and surrounding areas a selection of great restaurants. CATHIE TAUCHER The Panthers also continue to grab plenty of attention...

Magic feeling I have supported the Panthers since 1989. I had some luck early on, with the Grand Final in 1991 but was there all the way through the 1990’s for the disappointments, starting with Ben Alexander’s death and then going to Super League and not playing much finals football. 2003 was magical as well, but since then life has been pretty lonely for this Penrith fan. Not so much so in 2014. This year has the feeling of magic about it again and I would like to publicly congratulate all the key people who have made it such a great year so far. I was one of the doubters when Phil Gould returned but I could not be happier with the extraordinary work he has done to turn the

Panthers around and attract star players like Jamie Soward and Brent Kite. I can only imagine his guiding hand behind the scenes, even when it comes to the little things, is significant. I would also like to congratulate Ivan Cleary, who is a reserved fellow but appears to have an excellent head on his shoulders. He has the respect of the players, earned the hard way via the departures of guys who just couldn’t hack it like Luke Lewis (how are the Sharks working out, Luke?). Most of all I would like to commend the players. I have fallen in love with a new bunch of Panthers, namely Matt Moylan, James Segeyaro, Peter Wallace and Sika Manu who are leading the way for the Panthers in this bold new era. The match day experience this year has been fun and entertaining, while the games have been exciting. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the season brings, but I know that no matter what happens, I’m confident that the Panthers are a powerhouse club once again. All involved deserve a huge pat on the back. SARAH SMITH, ST MARYS

Local Government Minister Paul Toole has welcomed a new streamlined reporting system that will assist councils to complete audits more efficiently and will increase accountability to local communities. The new reporting system means that councils will no longer be required to separately submit their Rating Return and Statement of Compliance to the Office of Local Government. The rating Return is the way councils determine their total income allowed under the rate pegging system.

he claws are out as the community’s Local Area Commanders compete to draw blood, the most blood that is, in the name of saving lives. Superintendent Greg Peters from St Marys Local Area Command (LAC), Penrith LAC’s Detective Superintendent Brett McFadden, Detective Superintendent Darryl Jobson from the Blue Mountains LAC and Hawkesbury LAC’s Superintendent Steve Egginton are going head-to-head to see which one of their LACs can donate the most blood before August 8. “Every day our officers respond to serious incidents, including road crashes, serious assaults, drug and alcohol-related incidents, and natural disasters,” Superintendent Peters said. “For the victims of these incidents, blood donors are their lifeline. If each eligible person in NSW gives up just a few minutes of their day to donate blood, many more lives can be saved.” The competition is being held as part of the Red Cross’ Emergency Services Blood Challenge, which is a two-month challenge that will see emergency service workers face off to discover which is the most generous when it comes to donating blood. “We probably know more than anyone, being part of the emergency services, just how important blood donation is,” said Detective Superintendent McFadden. “While this is a competitive rivalry, we are doing this to serve the community, which is what police do on a daily basis.” The friendly rivalry between the four

n outing to The Train Shed at Luddenham is a day full of excitement for toddlers and youngsters, but sadly, not for much longer. The kids’ attraction, which includes Thomas and Friends miniature rides, will be shutting its doors on October 26 due to the announcement of a new airport at Badgerys Creek. The tourist attraction is located on Federal Government land, which could at any time be needed for airport preparations. “Our licence with Thomas and Friends is due for renewal, but with no certainty about our future on this site, we cannot renew the licence,” owner, Bev Jones explained. “The Federal Government own this land, we are just sub-tenants and so at any point, now that Badgerys Creek Airport is going ahead, we will be told to go.”

The business has been looking to relocate, but they have been unable to find a suitable and affordable piece of land. Though they enjoy being on the outskirts of Penrith, Ms Jones said the business is willing to relocate anywhere in Sydney if it means keeping the doors open. “We have been looking but there is nowhere affordable currently for us to relocate to. We are hoping that there might be someone who is interested in buying the business or having us as tenants,” Ms Jones said. “It is really sad, but we don’t have a say in this.” It’s even more devastating to the kids of Sydney, who have limited choices when it comes to tourism opportunities. “In Sydney there are a lot of tourist attractions aimed at teenagers and young adults, but nothing for young children, we are the only place,” Ms Jones said. “It will be a loss to the tourism industry when we close down permanently.” Your thoughts? mu Plains resident Eric Easterbrook has been named President of Sydney Legacy after spending over 30 years with the organisation, which is dedicated to supporting the families of Australian servicemen and women. The local resident has had a long history with the Department of Defence, both in the RAAF and as a civilian through Legacy, which he joined in 1981. Supporting the organisation’s local branch, Nepean Legacy has been a

passion for Mr Easterbrook, who knows that for the 4,500 widows of defence personnel and their families living in western Sydney, having someone to lean on and offer a helping hand is essential. “Legacy helps them apply for benefits to which they are entitled, assist financially if necessary and has Widows’ Clubs which helps prevent social isolation,” Mr Easterbrook said. “In Sydney’s west we assist 45 children who have lost a parent during or after their operational or war service. ” As head of Sydney Legacy, Mr Easterbrook will be able to better advocate for these local families.

aul Dorin has painted his 21st pair of celebrity jeans to mark the 21st year of the Children’s Medical Research Institute’s Jeans for Genes Day. The local cartoonist has painted on the jeans of sports stars, Australian celebrities and Hollywood actors all in the name of charity and this year, Jonah Hill, who starred in the recent film ‘22 Jump Street’ donated his denim to be painted. “I have been fortunate to paint the jeans of ‘Hollywood heavyweights’ like David Hasselhoff, Jim Belushi, Kevin Kline, Robin Williams and sports stars like Craig Lowndes, Ricky Ponting and Jeff Fenech,” said Mr Dorin, whose work is often seen in the Weekender. “I have up to now used only the two legged jeans as my canvas, and this year I wanted to try something completely different for me and it was a break from what I have normally done in the past. I decided to use the jeans as part of the painting.” Using Hill’s character from ‘22 Jump Street’ as inspiration, Mr Dorin has created a work of art unlike anything else he’s attempted. The jeans of Jonah Hill, along with those of other celebrities like Eric Bana, Gene

Paul Dorin with the Jonah Hill artwork Simmons and Adam Sandler that have been painted by Australian artists, will be auctioned off at the Jeans for Genes Gala Dinner in Sydney on August 23. All money raised will be donated to the Children’s Medical Research Institute for research into genetic diseases, birth defects and cancer in children.

BUSINESS TIPS

29 MICHAEL TODD Small Biz Connect Advisor Penrith Valley BEC

Switching off from your business

Patience is the key when it comes to marketing

As a woman in business, you have probably seen the latest television advertisements for the company AAMI. The premise of the light-hearted scenario is that “small business owners never switch off”. I found myself agreeing somewhat: if you are anything like me, you are always thinking of ideas and your business is never far from your mind. Inspiration can strike at the oddest of times and often occurrences and experiences outside of your work time can prove to be useful to your business (in a variety of ways). However, the more I see these advertisements, the sadder I become. The dad who is speaking to a client on the phone in his van, while he watches his son’s AFL game, is cheating himself and his son. He is watching the game, but he is not fully present. And I am certain that this would not go unnoticed by his son. Spending quality time with friends and family (and particularly children) means not being distracted and focusing fully on them. Although business owners should be passionate about their business – and there will always be times when urgen-

cies, deadlines and crises mean that the business ‘comes first’ – we also need to switch off. Children grow up quickly, friendships need regular input and life in general passes by all too quickly. We need to invest time in the things that are important. Switching off is also important for your business. If you are never, or seldom, taking time to refresh and regenerate, your business will become stale. Do yourself, your family and your business a huge favour: schedule daily, weekly, quarterly and yearly times where you truly “switch off” from business and watch the benefits flow.

With yet another financial year kicked off, now is the time to get on the front foot and plan your marketing. I don’t mean just deciding where or whom you are going to throw your money at. You need to be realistic and think strategically about how your marketing is going to get you to where you want your business to be in the near future. Has your target market changed? What marketing methods worked last year? What can you do better? Only by looking back can you move forward. Before allocating any money towards your budget, make sure you know who your customers are. The right marketing decisions are based on knowing and understanding your target market. Weigh up your marketing channels. The first rule is to not try and do everything. Be guided by how your targeted audience wants to be communicated with. If your customers don’t use social media, then you shouldn’t use it. If the last time you sent out an e-newsletter worked, then boost the frequency of your campaign.

To get the most out of your marketing budget, you need to know where your customers are coming from. Use discount codes at your online checkout, make your flyers redeemable vouchers or simply ask customers on the phone how they heard about you. If you are doing advertising in the press, you can use different telephone numbers and URLs so that you can see where your enquiries are coming from. This way, you can track the response rate to a specific advertisement. That last point is so important. Why commit to a whole schedule of marketing if it isn’t working? It is critical to measure your marketing to see what does and doesn’t work, and constantly refine your activity. You can also ask customers why they engaged with your business. You may know what channel your customers came through but try to find out what was it about your message that triggered their interest. Remember marketing has an element of trial and error about it, so don’t be too cut throat. Patience is key!

Power clean They’ve done it again: VOLVO is stepping up a notch with the launch of its new XC90

@natetaylor87

Volvo’s new XC90 will offer an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation when it is launched later this year. The all-wheel-drive seven-seater offers drivers up to 400 horsepower, but with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of around 60g/km (NEDC driving cycle) there has never been an SUV offering this level of power this cleanly. “There are no compromises when you drive an all-new XC90,” said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group. “In the past you could either have power or low CO2 emissions but with the all new XC90 you can have both.” The new XC90 offers a range of Drive-E engine options, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency. The main distinguishing feature of the Drive-E engine range is that they are all four-cylinder engines. “With our new Drive-E powertrains, we have created a family of intelligent petrol and diesel engines with power curves that give exciting driveability at the same time as delivering world-beating fuel economy,” Dr Mertens said. “With seven people in the new XC90, carbon dioxide emissions per person and kilometre are outstandingly low.” The CO2 performance of the XC90 will reinforce Volvo Car’s leadership when it comes to bringing more environmentallysound technologies to market.

hen the 2014 Commonwealth Games officially get underway in Glasgow, Scotland next Thursday, local sporting fans will have six Penrith hopefuls to cheer for. Three men and three women with either a connection through birth, residence or training facility will represent the Penrith area in five different sports at the Games from Thursday, July 24 through to early August. The youngest off to Glasgow is 20-yearold decathlete, Jake Stein, who will be competing at his first Commonwealth games. The Luddenham resident is one of the finest young talents in Australian athletics and will take part in the gruelling decathlon event which will see him compete in the 100m sprint, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. Also off to her first Commonwealth Games is Kemps Creek shooter and speech pathology student, Emily Esposito. The 20-year-old member of the Australian Women’s Shooting Team will compete in the 10m air pistol event in Glasgow. Esposito is a member of the Kemps Creek Pistol Shooting Club and her father, Daniel Esposito, represented Australia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Two boxers, a male and a female, have also made the Australian Commonwealth Games team. 20-year-old boxer Daniel Lewis will compete at his first Commonwealth Games in the 69kg division. The Londonderry resident has been boxing since the tender age of 11 and has fought all over Europe during his teenage years.

Daniel Lewis and Ben St. Lawrence will be competing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland Lewis spars with his father twice a day at the pair’s gym at Richmond Greyhound Club, and even has the glowing endorsement of legendary boxing trainer Johnny Lewis. Not originally from Penrith but currently training in the area is 26-year-old boxer Shelley Watts. The northern NSW product will make history when she competes in Glasgow as it will be the first time women’s boxing will be seen in the Commonwealth Games. Watts has been training for her Games debut with experienced trainer Mark

Grech at Toe The Line Boxing gym in Coombes Drive, Penrith. No stranger to medal podiums is 22-yearold diving sensation Melissa Wu, who will compete at her third Commonwealth Games. The Penrith-born diver picked up a gold and silver medal at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games in the 10m synchronised platform and 10m individual platform, respectively. Wu began diving in 2003 and even won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics at just 16.

Rounding out the local Glasgow Games athletes is 32-year-old long distance runner Benjamin St. Lawrence. The Penrith-born runner will compete at two events at the Games including the 5000m run and 10,000m run. St. Lawrence often trains and competes around the world and was a member of the 2010 Commonwealth Games team and 2012 Olympic Games team. The 2014 Commonwealth Games will be broadcast live on Channel Ten and One HD from Thursday, July 24. We’ll keep you posted on the local achievements.

he Penrith Baseball Club has undergone a much-needed makeover including brand new logo and apparel, just in time for the upcoming baseball season. The updated logo, featuring a meaner looking panther, was released earlier this month to initiate the various changes the club was set to embark on. Other changes include a brand new uniform with Penrith players wearing new black playing tops complete with a new design, which is still a work in progress. Players will also now wear white pants, black belts and black socks with the club hat remaining the same.

“The Executive Committee is currently working with a designer on a uniform design change that will see the look and image of the club updated in dramatic fashion,” Club President, Ben Gardner said. “This change will see our junior and senior player’s uniform get a muchneeded update and will bring the uniform more in line with the Penrith NSW State League and NSW Women’s League squad uniforms.” The Penrith Baseball Club have also made some exciting infrastructure changes too with a brand new car park at their Andrews Road facilities plus new fencing and mini grandstand for spectators, ensuring that the club continues to grow into the future.

enrith Flyers ice hockey junior Nathan Walker touched down in Sydney on Sunday after becoming the first Australian drafted into the National Hockey League. Walker, who was picked 89th overall by the Washington Capitals in last month’s NHL Draft, was welcomed home on Monday by Penrith State MP and NSW Sports Minister, Stuart Ayres. “It was a great pleasure welcoming

Nathan home as the first Australian athlete ever to be drafted in the National Hockey League,” Mr Ayres said. Walker said he was happy to be home celebrating the rare achievement. “As a New South Welshman, I feel very honoured to have been drafted by the Washington Capitals in the NHL. I hope this generates a more broad awareness of the sport in Australia,” he said. Walker will play as a special selection for the USA team in the International Ice Hockey series against Canada, which includes a match at Allphones Arena.

Robertson, who’s enjoyed a long and decorated career at international, first-class and first grade level, will be a welcome addition as Penrith’s spin specialist. Stuart will oversee Penrith’s elite bowling clinic. Returning to the fold for another season is Penrith batting coach Garry Sheen. The 2014/15 Sydney Grade Cricket competition begins in October.

ST MARYS RSL has scooped the pool by winning the District Women’s Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours. Fantastic results with some very exciting games being provided for the spectators. Their teams are off to Bathurst for the State Regional Playoffs on July 21 and 22. Blacktown Workers completed their Major and Minor Singles with Paul Faorlin defeating Wayne Cox in the Majors and Barry Dutton defeating Brian Woods in the Minors. Up at Glenbrook their Veteran Pairs winners were Garry Harvey and John Harris over John Leadbitter and John Burke. Wallacia also completed their Major Singles and Major Pairs. Trevor Costa was victorious over Danny Quinn in the Singles

and Danny Kelly and Glenn Robertson defeated Graham Martin and Mark Bell in the Pairs. The 50 bowlers who ventured to Newcastle last weekend certainly enjoyed themselves at both Soldiers Point and Lemon Tree Passage clubs with the overall scores being quite even; the social side was enjoyable with the only notable event that took place was Oscar Tolomeo leaving his bowls at Soldiers Point BC. Congratulations to Les Hickey and Ron Pittway (Penrith) on winning the Zone 5 Senior Pairs. Gavin Holburn and Greg Jeans were unfortunately beaten by Lithgow City in the Final of the State Pairs.

The club, which has a rich four-decade sporting history in the Penrith area, made the exciting announcements last week. Penrith’s first grade side, which finished a surprising second in the Sydney Grade Competition last season, will again be coached by experienced campaigner, Steve Small. THE PENRITH Mayors Cup was the feature of the Paceway’s harness racing meeting last Thursday night. This was the sixth annual running of the event. The Mayors Cup race five was taken by Bathurst trained Mighty Gift, the favourite at $1.60 and driven by Bathurst reinsperson Amanda Turnbull. She had to make a run three wide from the rear over the last lap to fight out an exciting finish with the leader Sir Willys Boy. The first race was a heat of the Harness Breeders NSW Go Girlfriend series. The winner was Grace Artois ($4.10) also driven by Amanda Turnbull. The final of this prestigious event valued at $20,000 will be run at Menangle on July 19. The Rag Doll ($3.60) took out the second after leading from barrier one. Michael Muscat returned to the driving

ranks with a good win on Ideal Legacy at $2.20. He went up three wide to sit outside the leader Attorney Stride and was much too good over the concluding stages. Michael followed up by taking out the fourth with Cyclonedomic ($3.20), coming from last at the bell he managed to beat stablemate Ruinate. Favourite Starzzzinthenight ($1.30) had it all his own way in the sixth. Going straight to the front driver Blake Fitzpatrick rated him well making it really hard for anyone to get a look in. Why Four ($3.20) got up for an overdue win in the seventh after having had a few recent placings. The lucky last went to Little Buddy ($3.10) giving driver Jim Douglass a very easy drive leading all the way and really having no pressure from the rest of the field.

ll 4WD vehicles need protection, particularly for your off-road adventures, and ARB is the place to go to make sure everything is in good shape. An ARB bull bar will provide a 4WD with a massive amount of frontal protection. For those who regularly spend time in remote and rural areas, the impending risk of animal strike makes a steel bar the most obvious choice when selecting vehicle accessories. ARB’s bars are superbly engineered and manufactured not only to maintain maximum functionality, but also to ensure they complement the look of the vehicle. bar, as well as nudge bars for smaller SUVs and utes. Meanwhile, there is no better way to protect the back of your vehicle than with ARB’s range of rear protection equipment. Manufactured to extremely high standards for maximum strength and designed specifically to suit each vehicle for the optimum fit, their protection equipment selection includes a variety of different models. Rear step tow bars are available for utes, along with rear bars (some of which incorporate wheel carriers), to cater for the diverse needs of 4WDers. All types integrate a heavy duty towing system for maximum functionality, but also incorporate individual features that differ for specific models. ir Locker locking differentials allow you to tackle the toughest terrain. As the world’s premier traction aid, ARB Air Lockers keep you moving in all conditions. The Requirement: Many people believe that a 4WD and traction go hand in hand‌ you can’t have one without the other. However, your vehicle’s standard (or open) differential is designed to allow each wheel to turn independently, thus eliminating binding during turns. Off road, this becomes a major burden as engine power will take the path of least resistance, which occurs at the wheels with little or no traction. Newer vehicles with limited slip differentials may offer some improvement, but more often you’ll find the slipping is not ‘limited’ enough to maintain forward

A

progress. Automatic locking differentials also have their disadvantages. Aside from being noisy when disengaging, they can also upset the on-highway driving characteristics of your vehicle. Created to provide 100% traction on demand, without sacrificing any of your vehicle’s highway driving performance, ARB Air Lockers employ a 12 volt air compressor designed to activate (and deactivate) a solid and durable locking mechanism inside the differential. This gives you the traction you need, when you need it, all at the flick of a switch, and all within the safety and comfort of the driver’s seat. ARB also offers three compressor models suitable for Air Locker operation, two of which can also be used to inflate tyres and other equipment. Check it all out at the Open Day.

hunting. ARB has a range of air compressors suitable for numerous tasks including specific models for Air Locker activation. Tyres perform best when they’re set at a pressure that’s appropriate for the terrain. While highway use calls for a relatively high pressure rate, lowering your air pressure will dramatically improve your 4x4’s

traction in a range of off road environments. Compressed air allows you the freedom to adjust the tyre inflation level of your vehicle to suit the conditions. An equally beneficial feature is the ability to re-inflate tyres that have been repaired – in gruelling off road conditions, it’s not unusual to get several punctures in one day. And when coupled with good quality tyre repair equipment, an ARB air compressor provides the off road traveller with independence and peace of mind when away from home.

u s p e n s i o n systems, especially when referring to 4WDs, are extremely complex. Determining the right solution for each 4WD requires special attention to many factors, with weight being the most critical. Old Man Emu 4x4 suspension by ARB approaches this in a unique way. The Concept: When an emu runs, its powerful legs absorb most of the impact, allowing it to move over all types of terrain while its body remains virtually motionless. This is what Old Man Emu strives to achieve with its range of fully integrated 4x4 shocks and suspension systems. The Difference: Instead of offering a compilation of parts that have been chosen primarily to increase the vehicle’s ride height, OME 4x4 suspension provides a range of tuned and matched integrated systems, each offering optimum levels of comfort, load carrying capability and control characteristics. espite blowout scorelines and only one win in the past two years, Penrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu has vowed to ambush the competition next season. With just two games remaining of the 2014 season, Tu’ipulotu believes with the injection of some new players surrounded by an already capable core, the Emus can build into a stronger force in 2015. “I’ve started looking at my player retention and recruitment for next year and we’ll be starting back at training on October 1,” Tu’ipulotu announced. “I have about eight core players that I obtained this year that I hope to use again next year and build a team around.
