he Penrith Panthers are set to be the highest bidders for offcontract superstar Johnathan Thurston now that controversial centre Michael Jennings has parted ways with the club. On Tuesday, after months of speculation and negotiations, the 24-year-old local junior was released by the Panthers from the remaining three years of his contract to join the Sydney Roosters on a four-year deal worth $2 million. Speaking with the Weekender on Wednesday, Panthers legend and current board member Greg Alexander was rather coy on speculation that Thurston was now Penrith’s number one target. “Well I’m not too sure about that but what I will say is our cap is certainly looking a lot healthier at the moment and there’s plans to spend some money for 2014 and 2015,” he said. “Jennings leaving will create a lot more money for some other quality players to go along with some of the juniors that we’re hoping will develop over the next 12 to 24 months.” Alexander said he was saddened by Jennings’ departure but knew the club had to make the decision and go through short term pain for long term gain. “There’s no doubt Michael’s a terrific player who has played State of Origin and is a strike weapon when a team has the ball,” he said. “You never like it when a class player leaves your club, especially a junior, but I understand the reason why and being on the board I more than understand the

salary cap pressure the club is under. “Michael was on a lot money and that wasn’t his fault he was on such a rich contract. But the plan the football office have in place and what they’re trying to achieve, it was a lot of money and probably a wage that we couldn’t sustain over the next three years if we wanted to do some other things.” Alexander praised Penrith’s off-season recruiting and hopes the club can now get on with their preparations for season 2013 with Jennings now out of the frame. “What’s happened with Michael

wouldn’t have been a great concern or huge distraction for the playing group but I think would’ve been more of a distraction for the coaching staff not knowing exactly what was happening,” he said. “It will be good for the whole club that the decision has been made, Michael’s moving on, and everyone can get on with the job.” Alexander, a Penrith junior, retired from the Panthers in 1999 but midway during his career made a two-year switch to the Auckland Warriors before eventually returning to the foot of the mountains to

see out his career. The 264-game legend said it would have been a tough experience for Jennings to leave his junior club. “It is tough, it’s a big decision because that’s where you grew up and that’s who you aspired to play for,” he said. “When it’s time, for whatever reason, for players to leave their home or junior club it is hard there’s no doubt about that.” Meanwhile, the North Queensland Cowboys have told the Weekender that Johnathan Thurston wants his future to be sorted before round one but there was no guarantee it would be.

tries to help Penrith to a 38-34 victory. Jennings scored his fi rst in the 26th minute, crossed again just before half-time and scored a vital four-pointer 18 minutes from full-time in another classic match against Penrith’s next door neighbours. After the match, Jennings is hailed by 2GB’s Ray Hadley as one of the most exciting players he’s ever seen. That footwork again I remember clearly a match back in 2010 at Hunter Stadium in Newcastle, when again Jennings’ amazing footwork was on show. A high bomb had been fumbled by a Knights player, and as everyone stood around watching it bounce around the field, Jennings swooped like a gazelle, immediately stepped to his right, turned Junior Sau inside out and scored in the corner. It was another example of the speed and quick thinking that really made Jennings a household name in rugby league circles. Man in pink scores three Wearing pink certainly didn’t take anything away from Jennings when he lined up against Manly at Penrith Stadium in 2010. The highlight of another magical night? A brilliant try that started 40 metres from the line. Jennings ran into a small gap, was handed the footy and produced explosive speed to head towards the line. Ben Farrar, faced with the prospect of Jennings passing to any of his three support players, looked like a deer in the headlights as Jennings opted to trust his own footwork, and powered across for a try. It showed confidence, sheer speed and brilliant timing. That was all on show in Jennings’ two other tries for the night – a spectacular hat trick in front of the masses. Another hat trick, just for fun Jennings did it easy against the Roosters on May 23, 2009, scoring three tries in the club’s 48-6 thrashing of the Chooks. The Roosters will be hoping Jennings shows that sort of form when he joins them for the season ahead. In the end, Jennings played 122 games for the Panthers, the side he watched as a St Dominic’s College student growing up. He scored 71 tries – a phenomenal strike rate – and clocked up nearly 300 points. Fittingly, he scored on debut back in 2007, and was named the Rookie of the Year that season. Michael Jennings is an enormous loss for a club attempting to solidify its western Sydney roots. We can only hope there’s another player like Jennings waiting in the wings.

he departure of Michael Jennings from the Penrith Panthers is obviously one of the big talking points of the week, with fans rightly disturbed at the loss of another local junior, and arguably the club’s best player. But as newspapers, websites and social media light up with debate about the star’s defection to the Roosters, I wanted to focus on some positives today, and some of the particular highlights of Michael Jennings’ time at the Panthers, because in all the drama over his departure, it is something likely to be overlooked. So, cast your minds back, because here’s some of the moments from the ‘Jenko’ highlights reel… The day he spoiled Noddy’s goodbye It’s Monday, August 30, 2010 and the fi nals-bound Panthers look to be in trouble against a Canterbury side attempting to give halfback Brett Kimmorley a fitting home ground farewell. Down 16-6 at the break, the Panthers fi nd their way back into the game, and with 10 seconds remaining, the scores are locked at 18-all. All looks to be set up for a fairytale fi nish for Kimmorley, who is in position to kick a deadlock-breaking field goal, but in a miracle for Panthers, is charged down. The ball is scooped up by Luke Lewis, who fl icks it to Jennings. Jennings shows his tremendous speed to run away to score. It was a highlight of the season, and showed Jennings’ speed at its best. The miracle kick against the Eels In a magic moment of the 2011 season, Jennings is involved in a play that will forever appear on Panthers’ highlights tapes. Down 22-16 against arch rivals Parramatta, and with the full-time siren sounding in the background, almost every Panther touches the ball as the side throws the footy around like it’s a hot potato. Eventually, the ball ends up in Jennings’ hands, who produces his trademark fancy footwork to weave his way past several tackles before putting in a smart grubber for Lachlan Coote, who scores a brilliant try. Penrith go on to win the game in extra time, but the match will be remembered for that try and Jennings’ amazing footwork and kick. A hat trick to savour On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Penrith Stadium back in 2009, Jennings would stamp his authority as one of the true stars of the game in a man of the match display against the Eels. 54 medical interns join the ranks at Nepean this week KATHERINE TWEED

hands. For many of the budding doctors, surgeons and specialists, after many years of study, beginning their internship will be a refreshing start to the year. Nepean Hospital welcomed the students on Wednesday, January 16, ensuring that their fi rst impression of their new workplace is a positive one. “As their fi rst employer basically, it is an experience that lives with you for your life – you always remember that fi rst day at work,” said Nepean Blue Mountains Health District Chief Executive, Kay Hyman. The interns are about to begin their fi rst year of full time work with Nepean Hospital where they will gain a broad experience and eventually move to specialise in a specific field of medicine, surgery and emergency. “Th is is a teaching hospital. We play an important role in their lives and they play an important role in the life of the hospital,” said Nepean Hospital General Manager, Kevin Hedge. “As a teaching hospital the role that we play is in their training and introducing them to specialty. As interns they play important roles in the medical care of patients.” There were mixed feelings amongst the

new interns at their orientation on Wednesday, however it was clear that the idea of fi nally beginning work was causing excitement for all. Kathryn Brooker, 26, studied at the University of Sydney for eight years and hopes to one day specialise in critical care and anesthetics. “We’re obviously the most junior doctors and it will be a big learning curve coming from studying full time to working,” she said.

“It’s exciting, it’s really exciting to have fi nally achieved something that I’ve been studying for, I’ve been at Uni for eight years, it’s really nice to fi nally feel like I am getting my foot in the door but there is still a long way to go.” “I wanted to be in a position where I could actually help people without them having to be suspicious of a ‘hidden agenda’, that there is something in it for me,” added 26-year-old medical intern Doruk Seyfi.

Relax burn-off regulations In the last several days we have seen devastating fi res throughout the Eastern States and Tasmania. Homes and businesses have been lost. Fortunately, no lives have were lost. Admittedly, there have been unusual hot and windy weather conditions that have aided the fi res in their sweep across the land. However, allegations are starting to emerge that proper controlled burn offs had not been done last spring. Why is this so? Anyone who lives in country areas would know that it is not easy to do controlled burn off s. There are a number of conditions that need to be met BEFORE permits are issued. Consequently, it is all getting “too hard” for land owners to do their once-a-year burn offs to reduce the fi re hazard when the warmer weather arrives. f there’s one thing I hate in this world it’s a liar. Someone who pretends to be something they’re not. When they’re in the public eye, continually proclaiming their innocence it’s even worse. So you can imagine my surprise when reports came in claiming Lance Armstrong has fi nally come ‘clean’ to Oprah this week. Whilst we’re yet to see the interview, if the reports are true, he has confessed to doping. Some say it was only to clear his conscience – others believe he had no choice, that his hand was forced. His web of lies was coming apart around him and it was a matter of coming clean or be caught out once and for all. If it is the latter – to me that makes him a coward. Of course everybody makes mistakes (some are bigger than others) but it’s how you handle them that really counts. I’ll always remember the way former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie dealt with a crisis. Unlike a lot of politicians when something went wrong, straight away he would call a press conference and say to the media “I’m sorry” or “there’s no excuse” or “the buck stops with me”. He always did it at the fi rst opportunity and people respected him for that. I respected him for that. Instead of pointing fi ngers and blaming others he

stepped up to the plate and made sure the following days were spent trying to fi x the problem, not dodging the hard questions. I wish more people would adopt this mindset. You only have to watch Parliament to see how much time is wasted arguing about stupid, trivial matters. It’s the same in normal life. If people are late – simply say you’re late and get on with the job. Don’t waste another 10 minutes making up an extravagant lie. Or if you don’t want to go somewhere just say so. Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. Because when you get found out, and eventually you will, it will be so much worse. People may not always like the truthful answer but they’ll respect you for being honest. If Lance has admitted drug use, people won’t agree with what he did but deep down people will be grateful that in the end he fi nally revealed the truth. Some will forgive him, some will not. But with the real story on the table at least people can now make up their own minds.

y focus this year is on delivering for families who face the pressures of the modern world and creating a future of opportunity for every Australian. These days, working mums and dads juggle it all while often being sandwiched between caring for young children and tending to the needs of ageing parents. I am determined our nation is positioned to be the winner in this Asian century of growth and change and these policies will set us up to win. We have more to do to create better opportunities for our children. 2013 will be the year in which we commit ourselves as a nation to change in every school to give every child the best possible chance. I am also proud we are working with families to help them be strong and deal with modern challenges. During 2012, we created more than 100,000 jobs. Having a job is the key to securing your family’s future. From January 1 this year, dads have been able to get two weeks of paid leave just for them, so they can spend more time with their new baby too. There’s the new School Kid’s Bonus to help with the costs of getting the kids to school. A typical family is $720 a year better off than under the old system. We’ve implemented fairer tax

arrangements so while you are juggling work and family life you get to keep the fi rst $18,200 you earn without paying a cent of tax. Lower interest rates mean significant relief for families with mortgages. State and Territory Governments recently agreed to my plan for electricity prices, which will hold bills down by up to $250 a year. I am also proud we are on track to launching the National Disability Insurance Scheme which just like Medicare, is about us being a fairer nation. All of these benefits are part of our plan to help modern families give our children a better life. Modern family life keeps throwing up new challenges. But I will continue to listen to the latest challenges people face and work out if government can fi nd a smart way to help.

s we approach Australia Day this year, it is a time to count our blessings and to reflect on our achievements as a

nation. As we gather in backyards, parks and beaches, at BBQs and community ceremonies, we can be proud of who we are as a people and of all that we have achieved as a nation. A former penal colony is now one of the world’s oldest continuous democracies. Our recent dangerous summers of flood and fi re have also demonstrated our instinct to look out for each other as individuals and communities. The lesson of our history is that we are at our best when we share our successes, and support and encourage each other as Australians. As John Howard often said, the things that unite us as Australians are

infi nitely greater and more enduring than the things that divide us. On this Australia Day, may we be proud of our history and hopeful about our future. In my fi rst speech to the Parliament almost 19 years ago, I expressed my confidence that “there is no limit to what Australia can achieve” and have never wavered in my belief that our best days as a nation are ahead of us.

POLICE SNAPSHOT Arson: Teens lit ﬁre at railway despite ﬁre ban About 1.30am on Thursday, January 10, police will allege that two teenagers started a grass fi re next to the fence of the railway track at St Marys Railway Station. Fire and Rescue NSW attended the scene and extinguished the fi re before any property was damaged however, a total fi re ban was in force. About 2am on Saturday, January 12, police from the Police Transport Command arrested two boys, aged 17 and 15, at Central Railway Station. They were taken to City Central Police Station where they were charged with lighting a fi re on a railway premises and cause or set fi re to the property of another. Both teenagers were also charged with other previous railway offences and the older teenager was also charged with breaching bail conditions and refused bail, appearing at Parramatta Children’s Court on Sunday, January 13. Theft from motor vehicle: Investigations continue About 9.15pm on Saturday, January 12, a 28-year-old male of no fi xed place of abode smashed the window of a motor vehicle parked in Lemongrove and stole property. During the robbery, the male was disturbed by the owner of the vehicle and ran off. A short time later the male was located and arrested by police from Penrith Local Area Command who recovered the stolen property. The male was charged with stealing and was refused bail to Penrith Local Court on January 14, 2013. Robbed at gun point: Teen s traumatic experience About 4.15pm on Tuesday, January 8, a 15-year-old boy was walking east along Victoria Avenue in Werrington when a blue Toyota Corolla pulled to the side of the road in front of him. The occupants of the car called out to the boy and as he approached the vehicle he was threatened with a handgun. The occupants of the car demanded that the 15-year-old boy hand over his mobile phone. The boy gave the two men his wallet and mobile phone before they drove off in an easterly directio. The boy was not injured during the armed robbery and police are investigating.

SW Fair Trading Commissioner, Rod Stowe, has issued a warning about the dangers of treadmills after shocking facts revealed that young children are at great risk of injuring themselves on the equipment. The ACI Statewide Burn Injury Service has reported that from January 2011 to January 2013, 74 patients sustained a burn involving a treadmill. Th ree were adults and the rest children with an average age of 3.5 years. More than 80 per cent sustained a burn to either one or both hands, 75 per cent did not have adequate fi rst aid administered and 91 per cent of the injuries occurred in a domestic residence. Associate Professor John Harvey, Head of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead’s Burns Unit, said he fully endorses the warning from Fair Trading. “We frequently see treadmill injuries in the toddler age group,” he said. “These include crush injuries to the hands and fi ngers, fractures and most commonly serious friction burns to hands and fi ngers. These burns often require skin grafting surgery.”

Horrific violence towards elderly man An horrific act of violence towards an elderly man in Kingswood has left police and local residents appalled. About 7.20pm on Friday, January 11, an 82-year-old hearing impaired man with a walking stick was in Victoria Park, St Marys, when he was approached by a younger man. The man proceeded to take the walking stick from the victim and allegedly struck him to the face with it a number of times, causing lacerations to his head and infl icting nose injuries. A witness called out and the offender left the park with the victim’s walking stick, which he discarded in the bushes some distance away. Police allege that the offender then attended an address nearby where he committed a domestic related assault on another male. Patrolling police arrested the 39-year-old Blackett man in the front yard of a nearby property and upon searching the man, discovered that he had an amount of cannabis in his possession. He was taken to St Marys Police Station where he was charged with aggravated robbery relating to the assault on the elderly male, common assault, relating to the assault on the other male, and possess prohibited drug. The man was refused bail and appeared in Paramatta Bail Court on Saturday, January 12.

After investigating the circumstances surrounding a grass fi re and fail-to-stop crash in Luddenham, police have now charged a woman who was seen fleeing the scene. About 9pm on Saturday, January 12, a car travelling south on Luddenham Road and a Hyundai Excel, exiting a driveway, collided. The two males in the car saw a small grass fi re in the driveway and, whilst putting it out, the men allege that the woman driving the Excel drove away from the scene. Police were told that witnesses followed the Excel and caused the woman to stop the vehicle. The men then took the keys out of the ignition however, using a spare key the woman started the vehicle and continued to drive away from the scene. The woman then allegedly drove to a club in St Marys where she attempted to gain entry but due to perceived intoxication, was refused by security who watched her return to her damaged car and called police. Police attended and the woman was arrested and taken to St Marys Police Station where she was charged with mid-range drink driving, negligent driving and not give particulars to other another driver. The woman was released on conditional bail however police from Strike Force Toronto continued to investigate the suspected arson. On Tuesday (January 15) the woman was re-arrested and additionally charged with intentionally cause fi re and be reckless to its spread; and fail to comply with the direction of the Minister (total fi re ban). The 52-year-old Manyana woman remains on conditional bail to appear in Penrith Local Court on February 15.

Not so sweet revenge: Penrith local court has heard that a woman made false accusations about her partner to police after he allegedly cheated on her. Between 9.30pm and 10.30pm on July 12, 2012, police attended a home in North St Marys after a call was made by the 20-year-old woman to 000 alleging that her partner was threatening her with a knife. Police spoke to both the man and woman before arresting the man. The woman provided police with a signed statement that night about the incident. However, on September 20, 2012, the woman attended St Marys police station and told police that her partner did not in any way stand over her, yell at her or assault her that evening in July. She admitted she had hit him in the shin with a pole and that the reason she called 000 was to get revenge on her partner for allegedly cheating on her. Drink driver: A 24-year-old male appeared in Penrith Local Court this week after he was found by police to be driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. The driver of the black Ford sedan was subjected to a roadside breath analysis where he returned a positive reading. There were three passengers in the car. The man was placed under arrest and taken to St Marys Police Station, where he returned a reading of 0.0811. The offender informed police that he had consumed three cans of Smirnoff Vodka Double Black at the Lucky Australia Hotel in St Marys between 11pm and 2am without consuming any food. The man was convicted and fi ned $640 as well as $83 in court costs and was disqualified from driving for six months. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Possess firearms illegally: A 20-year-old Cambridge Park man appeared in Penrith Local Court after police had searched his place of residence to fi nd that he illegally possessed a number of fi rearms as well as an illegal substance. Despite already being under a good behavior bond for similar behavior, the man was placed under another bond, for 12 months, in relation to six fi rearm related charges. The man was also fi ned $225 plus $83 court costs for the possession of an anabolic steroidal agent.

ast week, Northcott made history as they launched a revolutionary fi rst-of-its-kind app, set to change the lives of people with disabilities and those who support them. The app, Plan With Me, is used to assist people with disabilities and their carers to better understand and plan when managing behavioral issues; it is a user friendly and interactive way of building a Positive Behavior Support Plan. On Tuesday, January 15, Aby Hutchinson-West, manager of Positive Behaviour Support and Autism at Northcott and creator of the Plan With Me app, travelled to Penrith to educate local Northcott staff members on how to use it. “Too often we get caught up in long behavior support planning meetings that focus on the negative. Th is app is based on the positive with a large focus on the person,” Ms Hutchinson-West said. “We want parents and carers, the people that we are working with, to get involved. I’m really excited about it because it is so user friendly – really easy to use. We want people to give it a go.” The app is also designed to allow Northcott staff to work with clients more effectively on developing strategies that they better understand and can take a greater ownership of. Stephen McGeachy, Northcott Penrith’s Individual Community Participation Program manager, learnt the workings of the app on Tuesday and can already see the many benefits that it will give himself and his clients. “The app is going to be an absolute godsend. enrith residents are being warned not to handle bats and to treat their bites and scratches with great caution due to the possibility of contracting the deadly Lyssavirus. The NSW Health warning follows reports that large numbers of bats have died during the recent hot weather and small, local bushfi res. NSW Health is also concerned that the recent heat and bushfi res have caused injured bats to seek other shelter, prompting people to pick them up or attempt to rescue the animals. It is not uncommon for people living in Penrith, the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury regions to get bites or scratches from bats. Dr Vicky Sheppeard, Manager of the Public Health Unit at the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, said Lyssavirus is rare and is only transmitted through bites and scratches from the animal. But she advises that people should avoid contact with all bats, as there is always the possibility of being scratched or bitten and this could lead to a serious infection. “Many people are bitten every year and people should assume that all bats and flying foxes are infectious, regardless of whether the animal looks sick or not,” Dr Sheppeard said. Dr Sheppeard said people who have

If bitten or scratched you may require a series of injections to protect against

Family to swim across Sydney Harbour, English Channel to raise funds KATHERINE TWEED

f swimming in ice-cold water, battling currents and avoiding sharks sounds like a nightmare for you, spare a thought for the Hill family as they put themselves through their paces as a mere “practice” for what is to come. Local resident Paul Hill, his brother Luke and sister Tania will be attempting the English Channel Swim in 2014 with the hopes of raising $500,000 for the Cancer Council but until then, the siblings have been braving all conditions in preparation. The team is set to swim in the open water of Sydney Harbour on Saturday, February 16, an estimated 10 km that is expected to take them three to four hours. For many of us, four hours seems like a very long time to be swimming however Paul Hill told the Weekender that in comparison to the English Channel, Sydney Harbour is hardly a challenge. “I don’t think that the swim in Sydney will get any of the conditions that we expect to face in the channel swim. We are mainly looking at this swim as a training indicator – where our training is at,” Paul Hill said. The siblings will begin this swim at 6am from Kirribilli and, providing there are no hiccups, will leave the water at Manly Quay. Swimming in open water is very different to Penrith Pools, Paul Hill’s usual training ground, and there are many different precautions that need to be accounted for.

Hills’ battle for Cancer Council

Paul Hill and his siblings will be swimming across the Sydney Harbour to raise money for the Cancer Council.

For their Sydney Harbour swim, each of the three members of the family will be followed by a support boat and they are lucky enough to be sponsored by company Shark Shield, which has provided them with devices used to deter sharks. “I think that the more open water swims that you do, the more prepared you are each time. Th ings like the Shark Shield and having the boat there, it puts your mind at ease but you still get a little

nervous,” Paul Hill said. Raising money for the Cancer Council is important to the family as both of their parents have experienced the tragedy of cancer. “Our mother passed away when I was 18 and dad has been fighting cancer for the past 10 years. Our swim is basically to one, raise awareness; two, motivate others; and three, to hopefully prevent others from going through what we have been

through,” Paul Hill said. “We are hoping that the word really does get out there. our-year-old Kyla Devine knows just how important signing up to be an organ donor is. When she was born, at just four-days-old, Kyla was diagnosed with a liver condition, Biliary Atresia, which required her to have a liver transplant. “Other procedures were tried, but by the time she was four-months-old it was clear that she would need a new liver to survive,” explained mum, Katelan. “Kyla had to have a liver from a person under 60 kilograms due to the tiny size of her body. Th is meant that no one in the family could be a match. However, after being placed on the transplant waiting list, a match became available from an organ donor – without the donor; Kyla would not be here today.” Still thankful for the organ donation, the Devine family are encouraging local

residents to register on the new, national Australian Organ Donor Register that has replaced the former system in NSW where drivers could register to be an organ donor when they receive their driving licence. “Using the national register will bring NSW into line with other states of Australia and make it easier for people in NSW to make their wishes about donation known,” explained MP for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies. “The process of obtaining a driver’s licence is not the best time to discuss the wishes about organ donation. It doesn’t allow people the time to have a discussion with family and friends or take the time to make an informed decision.” Instead, those who choose to be an organ donor can now visit www. donorregister.gov.au or www.medicare. gov.au, call 1800 777 203 or visit a Medicare Australia office.

Women in trades: NSW Govt supports equal representation

he NSW Government is encouraging women to enter traditionally male-dominated trades through its new Women in Trades program. 18-year-old Mikayla has been training to become carpenter through an apprenticeship with Wright Carpentry Services. â€œI wanted a job where I could work outside and spend the day just getting stuck into work. My dad, who is a plumber always encouraged me to do a trade as he recognised that I really enjoyed that kind of work,â€? Mikayla said.

Her employer, Peter Wright, said that he respected Mikaylaâ€™s work ethic and her eagerness to learn. â€œI admired the determination. It can be tough for a young lady in this industry, she had to be better than everyone else to get the same respectâ€? Mr Wright said. MP for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said that she hopes more local women will take advantage of the governmentâ€™s Women in Trades program to bridge the gender divide in trades. â€œWomen currently make up only 13 percent of trade apprentices and trainees in NSW,â€? Mrs Davies said.

Glenmore Park local, Rhys Guyatt was one of the lucky scouts to attend.. â€œThey are having a ball, theyâ€™re absolutely having a ball,â€? said Rhysâ€™ mum Leanne. â€œWith all the entertainment, it is fantastic. They are discovering different things, meeting other kids.â€? The theme of the Australian Jamboree 2013, â€˜Dream it. Live itâ€™, has seen the kids taking part in team building activities as well as watching entertainment from Australian stars such as Reece Mastin.

Changing of the guard Chemist owners retire after 34 years at the Emu Plains business CASSANDRA O CONNOR

achoo and Bala Dattani have been the owners of Rima’s Chemist in Emu Plains for 34 years but last Friday, the couple who many locals consider part of the Emu Plains community, celebrated their retirement. “We really feel like part of Emu Plains,” Mrs Dattani said. “It hasn’t really changed that much over the years and we have grown with the people around us. We have many families who have been visiting us for four generations.” The couple have decided to retire to spend more time with their family and their grandchildren but still want to be active in the community. “I would like to study at the University of the Th ird Age or even teach there as I used to be a maths and science teacher,” Mrs Dattani said. “I think my husband would like to travel too.” Bob Ryan, who has been visiting Rima’s Chemist for 25 years said that Mr and Mrs Dattani will be missed. “When you visit their chemist you feel like you are being treated as family,” he said. “Mr and Mrs Dattani were very good at explaining to the elderly their medications, as good as any doctors,” he said. At the store, locals have been leaving gifts and bouquets for the couple.

The business has been sold to young couple, Marian and Ben Kest, who have been in the store this week to meet all the chemist’s regular customers.

ohn Dean’s pink and grey galah, Crackers, is a bit of an icon in the auto electrical industry. Mr Dean, who owns a business in Coreen Avenue, Penrith has had the Australian native bird as a pet in his workshop for the past three years. But sadly, on January 3, Crackers escaped the workshop and has not been seen since. “I got her from a breeder when she was just a baby and have hand raised her. She

is a bit of an icon really as everyone recognises her when they come into the shop,” Mr Dean said. “At Christmas time my customers would even bring her presents like little bells and food treats and things, so we are really missing her.” Crackers has a beautiful set-up in the store and is allowed to roam the store freely, but has somehow managed to escape. The three-year-old bird has a metal ring around her ankle that may help in her identification. Anyone who spots Crackers can call Mr Dean on 4722 3283.

Penrith’s job growth has historically come on the back of significant housing development, with many working in the so-called traditional sectors such as construction and retail. am a visualiser. In order to prepare myself to undertake something new or unfamiliar, I visualise the steps and imagine the scenarios involved. However I recently discovered that sometimes visualising is not enough. Regular readers of this column may remember that I had registered for an open water swim in January (something I have never done before). A few days before the race, the waves were choppy, the swell was big and looking out at the water, I decided not to compete. Although the day of the race ended up being perfect (and I felt some regret at not racing), it ended up being a good decision. I realised that while I had visualised it fairly well, I learnt a great deal from just watching the race this year. I was able to see the course (instead of just imagining it), check out the other competitors and feel some of the energy and atmosphere of the race. Next year I will be so much more prepared. In business, while there are times when you do need to step into something new without knowing all the details, there are other times when more research and planning will provide a better outcome. You may be able to imagine some aspects and prepare yourself mentally, but some of the following strategies may also help: talk to someone who has done something similar; get some professional advice; undertake a ‘practice run’; test your product of service a couple more times. By all means motivate yourself in whatever way works for you. But make sure you do what you can to minimise your risk of failure.

Pick up the phone

hy is it so hard to pick up the phone these days? The quality of business communication is becoming very poor as people avoid phone calls and face-to-face meetings in an often misguided quest for efficiency. I recently had a client defending his handling of a staff member who caused a small problem by saying “I don’t know why they didn’t understand the issue. I must have sent a dozen lengthy emails recently about the subject”. I swiftly explained that a brief conversation followed by a concise email would have probably prevented the issue within a few minutes, and saved him time in the process. It’s always much better to walk and talk rather than sit and type. Don’t get me wrong, communication methods such as email, instant messaging and skype have changed our lives for the better but sometimes it’s much more efficient to pick up the phone or talk in person. Why not pick up the phone? As technology has evolved, so has business etiquette. As I’ve said, people tend to rely primarily on email and text messaging because these communications are precise and less disturbing, while a phone call now signals that a matter can’t be solved by ordinary means. To break down this new barrier to effective communication, make face-to-face employee contact part of everyday life in your office. If you’re not doing it, you are missing out on one of the most inexpensive and effective management methods around. Relax and have fun, ask questions and listen.

Battling the blues of loneliness There are many ways to keep active and involved in the community... LAUREN TESOLINE

he irony of today’s world is that even though we are now connected more than ever through phones, computers and other gadgets, many still fi nd themselves cut off from communication. Seniors in particular experience increased amounts of loneliness and as a result can feel sad or depressed. Factors causing loneliness in the elderly include their inability to work or exercise like they may have before, they are immobilised because of health issues or injury or simply because many do not socialise as much as they used to. To reduce loneliness there are a few things that can be done to live a healthier and happier life. In Penrith there are a range of volunteer groups and meetings organised for people over 50. Activities range from joining in on group fitness classes, signing up to a hobby group such as a computer class or gathering at the local markets held regularly. Two main clubs that foster programs that reduce loneliness in seniors are the Penrith RSL and the Senior Citizens Centre, which provide perfect opportunities for seniors to get together. More often than not seniors who are living by themselves or in a nursing home have only limited contact with family and friends. When seniors have regular visitors it makes them feel valued and have

companionship that makes them still feel relevant. Recent studies have shown that visitors can increase one’s health, mood and overall contentment because they feel as if they are still part of society and are not a burden. When seniors can share their stories and have others listen it creates a positive feeling for them that they have a renewed purpose. If seniors can’t go out in the community regularly it is recommended that they learn about new technologies to keep in touch with family and friends. Seniors may not be well-versed with new technologies so a way to make them feel more in touch is by teaching them how to use a computer or phone. It is scientifically proven that learning a new skill is beneficial and boosts the mind, spirit and attitude. Lastly if you want to help others prevent loneliness as well as yourself a terrific way is the Red Cross’ initiative, Telecross. Each day thousands of senior residents across Australia and in the local Penrith region are called by others to make sure they are safe and well. Th is service helps maintain senior independence, improves their quality of life and reduces the necessity to move into residential care. Th is human voice reassures elderly citizens that they are a valued part of the community and that people still care. By being in contact with people, seniors can reduce the risk for mental health issues such as depression and being lonely.

Singing out for new voices Penrith Seniors Choir is looking to recruit new members for 2013 KATHERINE TWEED

enrith’s choir for the “young at heart”, Penrith Seniors Choir, are singing out for local seniors who have a passion for letting their voices be heard. For many years there was no choir in Penrith exclusively for local seniors however, around five years ago, Thelma Anderson saw that the need was there and pulled a few strings. Being a keen singer herself, Ms Anderson was looking for a choir that practiced during the day and was full of people just like herself so, she began her own and has been a member ever since. “Because I was on the seniors committee at the Penrith City Council when they were preparing for Seniors Week at the time, I suggested that there is not a choir for seniors or a choir that practices during the day and it went from there,” she said. “[Penrith City Council] asked the committee at the Joan and they were willing to supply a teacher.” There are presently around 12 members of the choir and the group is looking for more members, both men and women, who consider themselves to be seniors. “When we say that we are a seniors choir we are not asking for birth certificates or anything – if you call yourself a senior, you can come along. We call ourselves young at heart,” Ms Anderson said. The group has many benefits for the senior citizens of Penrith and Ms Anderson believes that teacher, Kerrie

O’Connor-Brown plays a large role in those benefits. “It is a very good group for people to join. Kerrie has taught us so much; even songs in other languages like Italian and French. A lot of the members have never spoken other languages before, it is great,” Ms Anderson said.

“Meeting with us and singing is also one way to help you to forget whatever it is that is ailing you for the hour,” she said. Penrith Seniors Choir meet once a week on Thursdays during the school term at the Joan Sutherland Centre from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. “It is a very social group; we really enjoy

besity figures have reached an all-time high in Australia, according to new Australian Bureau of Statistics research, which has local health specialists urging Penrith’s residents to work together to combat the condition. According to the latest research, 63 per cent, that’s almost two thirds of Australians, are now classified as overweight or obese, a shocking statistic that Penrith contributes to. Statistics for the former Sydney West Area Health Service from 2010 stated that up to 55 per cent of people in western Sydney aged 16 and above were either overweight or obese. Karen McCavana, Public Health Nutritionist for Nepean and Blue Mountains Hospitals, said that aside from the health benefits, it is

important for local people to overcome obesity for a vast number of reasons. “Apart from the health system cost of obesity to Australian taxpayers and indirect health costs including work absenteeism, Australians spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year on weight-management programs,” she said. There are many chronic conditions and diseases associated with obesity including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, some cancers, gall bladder disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, musculoskeletal problems such as osteoarthritis and back pain, gout, cataracts, stress incontinence and sleep apnoea. “The local community can help to reduce these statistics by helping families to

understand how to provide a healthy environment for themselves and their children and by changing city planning to include venues for safe, accessible and affordable physical activities,” Ms McCavana said. “[The local community can also help to reduce statistics by] improving the nutritional value of processed foods, improving the nutrition and variety of food available at school canteens and in workplaces, improving opportunities for physical activity in schools and workplaces increasing education for health professionals on how to recognise and manage weight problems in patients,” she said. Ms McCavana also suggested that the community should invest in community education programs on weight management.

Heat stroke

n Aussie summer is all about fun in the sun. Th is time of year people are spending long days outside whether it be on holidays by the beach or outside at home in the garden. Th is beautiful sunshine though can have horrible consequences for some people, especially during the heatwaves we have had. Your body will become stressed by the heat when it becomes dehydrated and therefore can’t cool itself enough to maintain a healthy temperature. Normally, sweating helps to maintain a healthy body temperature by increasing heat loss through evaporation. However, if you become dehydrated, you can’t sweat as much and your blood becomes concentrated causing electrolyte imbalance and impairment in organ functioning. All organs can be affected, including the hypothalamus in your brain where temperature is normally controlled. When your core body temperature rises above 40.5 degrees Celsius, the body’s internal systems can begin to shut down causing heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can develop rapidly. Symptoms and warning signs vary from person to person but may include very high body temperature, red, hot and dry skin with no sweating, dry swollen tongue, a rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness,

Gym talk nausea, confusion, delirium, collapse and unconsciousness. If you are in a hot climate, doing vigorous exercise on a hot day or unable to stay in the shade, keep a look out for any of these symptoms or even better, prevent it by avoiding extreme temperatures altogether. Certain people are more susceptible to heat stroke such as young children, elderly people, pregnant women, lactating mothers and athletes. To prevent heat stroke, drink plenty of water or other cool, non-alcoholic beverages. In a heat wave, reduce physical activity and rest often. Take time to check on your elderly family or anyone you are concerned about as they may need your help to cope with the heat. Of course, never leave anyone or any pets in a closed, parked car. If you are at home you could also have cool showers and turn the air conditioner on. If you notice signs of heat exhaustion, immediately try to cool the person down by wetting them and fanning. Offer cool water. Place ice packs in areas such as the armpits and groin and forehead. Take it seriously and call for medical help whenever you are concerned. So this summer, enjoy the hot weather, but be aware of the dangers it can bring and know what to do about it. That is your best defence!

These are exercises that are strenuous enough to temporarily speed up your breathing and heart rate. E.g. running, cycling, walking, swimming or dancing. Max Heart Rate. Your rate is affected by your fitness level. An estimate of a person’s maximum age-related heart rate can be obtained by subtracting the person’s age from 220. Flexibility training or stretching. Th is type of workout enhances the range of motion of joints. Age, injury or inactivity can cause muscles, tendons and ligaments to shorten over time. Contrary to popular belief however, stretching and warming up are not synonymous. In fact, stretching cold muscles and joints can make them prone to injury. Strength, weights, or resistance training. Th is type of exercise is aimed at improving the strength and function of muscles. E.g. Weight lifting or exercising by overcoming some form of resistance, exercises like pushups in which you work against the weight of your own body. Specific exercises strengthen different muscle groups. Set. Th is term refers to repeating the same exercise a certain number of

times in a group. For instance, a weight lifter may do 10 biceps curls, rest for a few moments, then perform another “set” of 10 more biceps curls. Repetition or “rep”. Th is refers to the number of times you perform an individual movement during a set. For example, the weightlifter mentioned above performed 10 reps of the bicep curl exercise in each set. Warm up. Th is is the act of preparing your body for the stress of exercise. The body can be warmed up with light intensity aerobic movements like walking slowly. These movements increase blood flow, which in turn heats up muscles and joints. Always warm up the specific parts you will be using. At the end of your warm-up, it’s a good idea to do a little light stretching. Cooldown. Th is is the less-strenuous exercise you do to cool your body down after the more intense part of your workout. For example, after some sprints, you might walk at a reduced speed for a while until your breathing and heart rate slow down. Stretching is often part of a cooldown. So now you can talk the talk, go walk the walk!

ormally, when I think of denim, my mind wanders to my favourite pair of jeans, sitting in my wardrobe and waiting for winter to arrive, but denim in summer 2013 is proving to mean something very different. Th is season, denim is stepping out into our streets in force. The heavy fabric is no longer reserved for jeans and shorts, it can be found fashioned into dresses, overalls, onesies, shirts, jackets, crop-tops and even swimwear. Not only can you fi nd a denim example of every kind of clothing item imaginable, but you can fi nd denim trimmed shoes and accessories as well. What is more surprising than this unexpected overhaul of denim is that the ‘look’ for the season is encouraging us to wear denim on denim; a style that briefly made a comeback in 2010 but is set to make a huge comeback this season. The great thing about the ‘double denim’ look is that most of us will already have the ingredients in our wardrobes to make up the perfect denim outfit however, beware: it is very easy to get it wrong. It doesn’t take much to turn a stylish, double denim outfit into a nasty overload of blue, leaving you washed out and looking like you stepped straight off a ranch in Texas. Luckily, a few simple guidelines can help you to stick to the stylish side of double denim, but it takes a lot of confidence! Contrast is the key: possibly the most important thing to remember when trying the double denim look is to keep contrast in the equation. Stay away from wearing blue denim pieces that are the same or even similar tones – opt for one part dark and the other light. Darker denim has a great slimming effect so use it on the bottom and wear a light denim top. Break it up: use other items such as an undershirt or a leather bag to break up the denim and remember to never go over the top. A simple pair of shoes or pointed heels will look great. Th ink about your accessories: use accessories that complement but contrast the denim. Wear a watch to add to the outfit and you can’t go wrong with simple bracelets or earrings.

Stick to your New Year’s Resolution!

ith the start of a new year, many of us are analysing our budgets to figure out how to get ahead fi nancially this year. To me the obvious place to start is with the biggest item that many of us have on our budget – our mortgage. Because it is often our biggest expense, this means it can also be the area for the biggest savings. So here are some of my tips for making significant savings on your mortgage. I’ll use an example to help illustrate the savings. Let’s say: • you’ve got a $250,000 mortgage • you’re making repayments of $2,000 a month and • you’re paying interest of 6.5 per cent. At this rate your total repayments will be $418,493 (including $168,493 in interest) and it will take you 17 years and five months to pay off. Shop around for your home loan One of the fi rst things you should do is to shop around for the best deal available. If you fi nd a deal that saves you just 0.5 per cent, you will save more than $25,000 and a year of repayments across the life of the loan. My only caution is that there can be more important features to a home loan than just the rate so be sure you’re getting the right home loan for you. However I still believe every mortgagee should periodically shop around. Pay a bit more than your repayments Now let’s say you fi nd a way to save $50 a week (or about $7 a day) and decide to make extra repayments of $200 a month. Th is reduces your total repayment by nearly $30,000 and more than 2 ½ years. Increase the frequency of your repayments Finally, let’s say you decide to pay fortnightly instead of monthly. You’ll end up making an extra repayment every year which will again reduce repayments by more than $25,000 and will take almost 2 ½ years off the loan.

When we are training regularly and competing at any reasonable level sport, it’s very important to keep tabs on how our muscles are recovering and coping with the strain placed on them during activity. Many sports people, or even weekend warriors, maintain a weekly massage routine with a good sports massage therapist. More often than not, this is to simply deal with DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), which usually comes on 24 to 48 hours after a heavy workout. One study found that deep tissue massage had a 30 per cent reduction in DOMS compared to patients recovering without massage, and although they found no improvement to muscle function with the massage group, it stands to reason that if an athlete is in less pain, they will return to activity more rapidly. Massage therapy is not only useful in treating pain and injury. A good massage therapist can identify muscles or muscle groups that are not functioning correctly or are too tight to cope with activity at certain levels. They can then refer you to the correct allied health professional or give you stretches to carry out to reduce stress on the structure. Th is is one of the best ways to avoid injury and most sports medicine centres will have a highly qualified sports massage

he benefits of krill oil have again been recently highlighted in the media. However what are the differences between krill oil and fish oil and what conditions is krill oil beneficial for? Krill are small crustaceans, similar to shrimp, that live in the cold waters of the Antarctic Ocean. Krill oil is taken for the same reasons as fish oil as generally they contain Omega-3 fatty acids, which may be beneficial for general health, brain function, joint swelling and inflammation, cardiovascular health and lowering cholesterol levels. There is now evidence to suggest krill is a better source of Omega-3 than fish oil as it is much better absorbed. Th is means you need to take less capsules of krill to get the same benefits as fish oil. In fact, just one krill oil capsule of 300mg is said to be equal to nine standard fish oil capsules (1,000mg). Th is is equal to the fish oil dosage recommended by Arthritis Australia for joint inflammation. Krill does not have any fishy reflux so it is also a great alternative to the liquid fish oils that are also equal to nine standard fish oil capsules. As krill is highly absorbed, this makes it very easy to get the needed amounts of Omega-3 that have been shown to lower bad cholesterol and maintain healthy cholesterol levels. In fact the recommended dosage of krill oil is 1,000mg a day, which is equivalent to around twenty standard (1,000mg) fish oil capsules! One study had people who were already taking cholesterol lowering medication also take 1,000mg of krill oil per day. Th is had amazing results. After 12 weeks the average results were a 32 per cent reduction in bad cholesterol, a 44 per cent increase of good cholesterol and a 13 per cent drop in total cholesterol. Unfortunately, undertaking a DIY is not always as glamorous and simple as TV shows make them out to be. To avoid ending up in a renovation nightmare you should take a minute to consider if a DIY renovation is for you or if you would be better off with professional assistance. Before diving into a DIY renovation there are a few things you need to think about: • Do you have the time necessary to complete the job to a satisfactory level? If you don’t have the time, then you will more than likely end up with a poorly done job. Most projects tend to take more than a weekend; therefore you need to make sure that you will have sufficient time to dedicate to the renovation. • Does the work require a qualified person? If the total value of works exceeds $5,000 then you will require an owner builder licence from the NSW Department of Fair Trading. Furthermore, in order to comply with current acts and regulations you may require licenced individuals to complete certain components such

as electrical or plumbing services. • Do you know what you are doing? Are you relying on a Youtube video or a dummy’s guide? If so, then you may not have all the required information to complete the job adequately. You shouldn’t rely solely on these guides. Unless you have previous experience or are being assisted by someone with experience, it would be best to leave the job to professionals.

The Bible’s New Testament book of Matthew tells us that when Jesus was born into our world, he was given the name “Jesus” because “He will save his people from their sins”. Th is is significant because straight away it points to our deepest need. When Jesus was born he wasn’t called “President” or “Prime Minster” as if we needed a new political leader. Nor was he called “Doctor” as if he would bring significant health improvements. Jesus was given his name because he would grow up to rescue humanity from our

greatest problem and help us with our greatest need. In Jesus’ death on the cross and in his rising again, Jesus would not only save us from our sins but he would open the door for us to have a fresh start and new life with God. Jesus’ name powerfully points to who Jesus is and what he came to do. Th is year, may you know this difference that Jesus can make to your life.

After a heartbreaking five-run defeat to grade cricket powerhouse Sydney University, Penrith has received a boost with news that test star Patrick Cummins will return to the playing field for this weekend’s fi xture against Parramatta at Old Kings Oval. Whilst Pat will be restricted to playing as a batsmen only, this match marks the start of the journey that will hopefully culminate in a place in the Australian squad for the upcoming Ashes series in England. Pat is happy to be back playing cricket of any kind and he looked particularly sharp when training with the club on Tuesday. In more good news for the Cummins family, Pat’s older brother and fi rst grade wicketkeeper Tim scored his fi rst, fi rst grade 50 for Penrith in what was a faultless display of batting on the weekend.

Th is weekend will also see the return of NSW under 19 vice captain Ryan Gibson from the national championships in Adelaide. At the time of writing NSW and WA were locked in a battle for the title. Into the second half of the season we have grades three to colts all in contention for a fi nals spot in their competitions. The ever popular, Penrith Cricket Club ‘Captains Lunch’ is just around the corner and this year’s event is looming as one of the best yet. Another good crowd was in attendance for harness racing at the Paceway last Thursday night. Race one was one for the bookies when Bamber driven by Lauren Panella led all the way, winning easily at $10.40.Lauren is a lightweight driver who seems to specialise on front runners. Race two saw leading driver Luke McCarthy just manage to get Mink Stride at odds of $5.50 to a last stride win from favourite, Major Denial. Race three and Count The Chips at $1.30 lived up to his name and expectations when driven by Blake Fitzpatrick. He led from barrier four and never ever looked in doubt in the fi rst of a driving treble for Blake. Whata Escape ($5.00) driven by Trevor Munday confi rmed his recent good form,

taking out the fourth race coming from last at the bell and just defeating Our Southern Belle, who will soon make amends and win. Brick Top at $3.90 was a popular pick for the fi fth race and driver, Michael Towers, made sure of it by leading all the way. Bathurst driver Bernie Hewitt had favourite Four Jokers ($2.80) last at the bell in race six. However he made a three wide high speed move around the field at the bell and won going away at the fi nish. A protest from favourite Mister Desirable against the winner NorthviewCardle was dismissed by stewards thus enablingdriver Blake Fitzpatrick to land his second win of the night with NorthviewCardle in race seven. Blake landed his driving treble with Gifted Bliss at $1.30 in race eight.
