illy carts may have been pushed aside over the decades in favour of video games, iPads and phones, but you’re never too old to have fun. The members of the Penrith Community Men’s Shed are getting ready to compete in their first ever billy cart race – ‘The Caddens Cup Billy Cart Challenge’ – with the public invited to join in on the fun.

Check out our truly local trades & services guide p.57-61

Held in conjunction with their open day in November, most of the guys down at the shed already have their billy carts ready to go. Chairman of the Penrith Community Men’s Shed, Merv Adlington, said the open day is a way for the community to see what it’s all about. “We get given so much by the community and we just want to show them what we’ve been doing – it’s a way for us to open up to people,” he said. “In terms of the billy cart race, well we’re a bunch of old fellas on billy carts and that might just end in disaster,” he joked.

There are less than 30 entry spots left into the Billy Cart Challenge, set to be held just after midday on the day, with Mr Adlington urging people to get their entries in. Money raised on the day will be going to Whitelion, an organisation that helps disadvantaged youth. The free event will be held at the Men’s Shed located next to Penrith Baptist Church at 11 Morello Terrace in Kingswood from 10am to 3pm on November 28. Contact Merv Adlington on 0439 646 942 for more information.

ast Saturday I was interviewed on Sky News. In that interview I talked about recent terrorist events that occurred in Martin Place and most recently, Parramatta. I described those events as shocking. Let me be very clear. We have a problem with a small but significant group of people falling prey to the evil and twisted ideologies of radical Islam in Australia. This is not the Australia I want. I have consistently said, if you don’t like what Australia offers, find somewhere else to live. In fact, I have spoken to parliament on two occasions this year supporting the need for measures to make Australia safer against these insidious threats. Regarding the Sky News interview, I was referring to an event that took place in Broken Hill a century ago. I did not describe this as clearly as I should have. In no way was I referring to recent events at Martin Place or Parramatta. To suggest I was referring to recent terrorist acts is offensive and ridiculous. Like all Australians I was appalled

NSW Premier Mike Baird and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Pru Goward have announced a $60 million package to target perpetrators and support women, men and children who have experienced domestic and family violence (DFV). The package includes new Police Domestic Violence High-Risk Offender Teams to target perpetrators and reduce the rate of reoffending, as well as DFV Suspect Target Management Plans that will put offenders on notice. In addition, the package will increase crisis accommodation support as well as introduce Australia’s first Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, which discloses information about a perpetrator’s violent history. Federal Lindsay MP Fiona Scott and angered at the terrorist attacks in Parramatta and Martin Place. It is the first duty of Government to keep all Australians safe, this is why I have strongly supported the anti-terrorism

measures that Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull have put forward. I will continue to support this Government’s efforts to defeat terrorism and to make Australia safer.

Minister for Roads Duncan Gay this week announced the release of a new ‘Get Your Hand Off It’ campaign which highlights the risks of using your mobile phone while driving. The new ad shows that when driving at 60 kilometres per hour, if you look at your phone for just two seconds, you travel a distance of 33 metres sightless. “The key message we’re spreading is that if you look away from the road to read or touch your phone, even for two seconds, you’re driving blind,” Mr Gay said. “No Tweet, Selfie, Facebook friend request or SMS is more important than concentrating on the road and protecting yours or someone else’s life.”

ustralia has never been immune from horrifying, baffling crimes. The backpacker murders in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Martin Bryant’s rampage at Port Arthur in 1996, the 1992 Central Coast massacre in which six people were killed. The Beaumont children, the Anita Cobby Murder, the Milperra massacre. They are stories and events that will forever be scars on Australia’s history, even though they’ve long disappeared from the headlines. And they are the stories that are often forgotten when people say “it wasn’t like this in my day”. Tragic as it is, every generation in Australia’s history can tell a story about a crime that defined an era, and about the response that followed. In 2015, there is very little doubt the game has changed in terms of the crimes we’re talking about. The fear of terror attacks, whether they be on a ‘lone wolf’ scale or something much larger, is now part of the everyday media cycle and the everyday chatter in pubs, at the footy, in workplaces or around the family dinner table. And there is no denying that the threat is very real – the tragic events of the Sydney Siege in December last year and more recently the murder of NSW Police accountant Curtis Cheng by a 15-year-old boy have driven home the message that the threat of terrorism is very much on our doorstep. Unfortunately, Penrith got its own taste of the current cycle of fear when a threat was made to the city’s major shopping centre on Tuesday. Police responded, as they should have,

and social media went into meltdown, unfortunately most of it being misinformation, speculation and dangerous innuendo. Like with some of the stories I mentioned at the top of this column, our hope for the future lies in our response. The media must also play a role in ensuring its reporting while not playing down any potential threat, is done so in a calm, respectful and collected way. The story surrounding Lindsay MP Fiona Scott on Tuesday in the mainstream media was hardly fair and taken way out of context if you view the full interview from which particular comments were cherry-picked. We should not be trying to create villains as part of the wider coverage of terrorism, the Islamic State or threats in general. Much of the talk in terms of a response to the threat of terrorism overall has been

News.............................................1-29 Business.................................30-31 History ............................................32

in relation to the legal structure when it comes to terror suspects. NSW Premier Mike Baird has been particularly strong here, wanting to detain terror suspects for up to 28 days without charge. The Federal Government is seeking to lower the age threshold for control orders from 16 to 14. An individual under a control order can have their movements restricted and be prevented from associating with certain people. Attorney General George Brandis said this week that “as the threat evolves so will our response”. And so it should. Nobody should have any issue with police being given extraordinary powers to investigate, interrogate and monitor anybody suspected of being engaged in terrorist activity. It doesn’t matter if that is a Muslim teenager or a red-headed bloke with the word Australia tattooed across his back. If you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Opposition Leaders Bill Shorten and Luke Foley should put politics aside and support any measures that aim to make us safer. As the leader of our country, Malcolm Turnbull is very much in the hot seat through this whole process. As we confront very serious issues moving forward and the ever-evolving nature of terrorism, Australia needs a leader with clear views, a clear message and a strong ability to stand up in times where others will sit down. If he expected a honeymoon as the new Prime Minister, it’s been cancelled.

ix Penrith City Councillors were among 700 delegates who cast their votes at the Annual NSW Local Government Conference on Monday and Tuesday. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown, Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler and Councillors Michelle Tormey, John Thain, Greg Davies and Jackie Greenow attended the conference, that is Local Government’s primary policy making forum. Cr Fowler was presented with a prestigious Emeritus Mayor certificate at the conference, for being elected as Mayor three times. “It’s recognition for a lot of time and effort and it’s very warmly received,” Cr Fowler said. At the forum, those in attendance debated policy to form the agenda that Councils will advocate to State and Federal Governments. A range of topics around the State Government Fit for the Future reforms, rate capping, Council viability and funding from State Government were addressed. Cr Fowler said overall there was discussion and general consensus with a lot of matters put forward, but Council amal-

mations are going to occur and they are going to happen fairly soon.” While organisation was an issue at last year’s conference, Cr McKeown’s only concern this year was over the choice of panellists. She said there were no women on the ‘Q&A style’ panel, showing how little women are represented in Local Government. “A couple of the delegates raised the fact that there were no women on the panel. Not only that, only one woman was given the nod to ask a question to the panel,” she said. However, out of a huge 108 motions on the business paper, 101 were addressed, including one policy motion from Penrith City Council. Penrith’s motion was to amend the Local Government Act 1993 to allow Councils to recover charges that are attached to land upon transfer of the property. “If Council had to go and clean up a property for health and safety reasons... the money for the bill could be recouped back through the sale of the house,” Cr McKeown said. The conference also elected Local Government NSW’s governing Board for the next 12 months. Do you agree with Council mergers? Tweet us @wwpenrith.

South Penrith: Man charged with attempted murder

Cranebrook: Stolen items found after vehicle stopped

A man has been charged with attempted murder after an incident last week. The incident allegedly happened at a home unit on Fragar Road in South Penrith at about 6.30pm on Friday, October 9. A 22-year-old man was found with stab wounds to his chest, shoulder and armpit by a witness who also lives in the building. The witness pushed the accused, a 44-year-old man, away and dragged the victim into his unit. Emergency services arrived on the scene just a short time later. The 22-year-old was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment with his wounds considered to be non-life threatening. A 44-year-old man presented at Penrith Police Station where he was arrested and changed with attempted murder.

A male has been arrested and charged after he was allegedly found with several stolen items. At about 11pm on Tuesday, October 6, police stopped a vehicle travelling at a high speed along Cass Place in Cranebrook. The passenger of the vehicle, a male in his late 30s from Cranebrook, exited the car and began to drop a number of items from his clothing including a passport, credit card and personal items belonging to a female. After a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers allege they found stolen items or items that were unlawfully obtained as well as an alleged small amount of ‘ice’. Police allege the items were in relation to a break and enter that happened earlier in the evening at Seven Hills.

Werrington: Multiple charges after shock discoveries in car

Werrington: Woman charged after positive breath test

A man has been charged after he was allegedly found with prohibited weapons, illegal drugs and an improperly restrained toddler in the vehicle he was driving. The 20-year-old was stopped by officers on Rosewood Way in Werrington at about 12.10pm on Tuesday, October 13, with police intending to conduct a random breath test. Officers noticed a 30 centimetre knife next to the driver’s seat and it was then decided they would also search the vehicle. A working stun gun disguised as an iPhone, an allegedly stolen iPod and quantities of‘ice’ were all seized. The 20-year-old was also a disqualified driver.

A woman was charged with a high range PCA offence after she collided with another car on the opposite side of the road on Monday, just after school pick-up. At about 4pm on Monday, October 12, a 45-year-old woman was driving along Victoria Street in Werrington with a nine-year-old child in the car when she veered onto the incorrect side of the road, consequently colliding with another vehicle. Both drivers were given a breath test with the 45-year-old returning a positive reading. She was taken back to Penrith Police Station for breath analysis and posted a reading of 0.179.

Working together to create the future All levels of government come together to provide new affordable housing at St Marys DALE DRINKWATER

he construction of new affordable housing in St Marys has begun after a truly ‘groundbreaking’ ceremony on Monday. In a joint effort between local, state and federal governments, the project will deliver 49 one and two bedroom affordable units in Phillip Street by the end of 2016. Upon completion, the affordable housing will be managed by Wentworth Community Housing. CEO Stephen McIntyre said such housing is at the core of escaping poverty. “This $15 million project will assist key workers and disadvantaged people who want to live locally and have housing to support their lifestyle,” he said. “I’m also told this development will achieve gold level under the Livable Housing Design Guidelines, which is also quite impressive.” Mr McIntyre said developing purposebuilt housing is a major new initiative for Wentworth Community Housing. “It certainly recognised that there is housing stress in the Nepean-Blue Mountain areas,” he said.

T

“It won’t be the last, and we hope over the coming years there will be more of this sort of project.” The project was made possible by a partnership between Penrith City Council’s Affordable Housing Project, NSW Family and Community Services, and the Federal Government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme. State Member for Mulgoa and Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Homelessness, Tanya Davies, said this collaboration is innovative, creative and clever. “Today’s project is a critical example in terms of three levels of government coming together with a fantastic community housing provider to create this amazing model,” she said. “As a government we are looking for the new ideas, models, ways to leverage the skills, expertise and finances to continue to bring these properties to the marketplace.” The project, which was initially for four social housing units and 20 affordable housing units, was almost doubled in size when Council endorsed a Deed of Agreement in early September. Now, a further 11 social housing units and 14 affordable housing units will be available to the community.

Threat against shopping centre made on social media website JADE ALIPRANDI

frightening message posted on social media prompted a strong police response at Westfield Penrith on Tuesday. The anonymous threat was originally posted on bulletin board ‘4chan’ but was later screenshot and posted on Reddit. It warned people not to go near the popular shopping centre on Tuesday and threatened violence involving a gun. “My Australian friends and family, I have decided I will go out with a bang (quite literally),” the message read. “I advise you not to go to Penrith Westfields tomorrow as I will be there at 10.00am (AEDT) Tuesday, October 13. “I have a gun and unfortunately I am going to use it.” Police treated the threat seriously and had a visible presence at the shopping centre on Tuesday morning. “Police were on the scene making

inquiries in relation to comments made on a social media site regarding a shopping centre in Penrith,” a police spokesperson said. By 11.30am, the police operation was over and officers had left the scene. One Facebook user commented on the Weekender’s Facebook page about the incident and said: “I was in there approximately half an hour ago and a lot of shops were closing”. Spokesperson for the Scentre Group, Julia Clarke, said the centre was still trading as normal while the situation was unfolding. “We’ve been working closely with police in their inquiries regarding the comments made on social media,” she said. “A couple of shops opened later than normal on the day but the centre was still open.” The threat was just one of many posted on social media over the past few weeks regarding different areas of the state.

PUBLIC NOTICE Notice of public hearing planning proposal reclassifying certain public land in St Marys Town Centre Council has arranged an independently chaired public hearing for its proposal to reclassify certain public land in St Marys Town Centre. The land is generally located adjacent to the existing shopping centres in the Town Centre (Station Plaza and St Marys Village) and consists of open space and car parking. The land is already zoned to allow mixed-use development (residential, retail and business). The proposal recommends changing the classification of the land from Community to Operational to prepare the land to allow Council to consider opportunities that will grow the Town Centre and implement the adopted St Marys Town Centre Strategy 2006. These opportunities include the sale, lease and/or development of the land, none of which can be considered if the land remains Community Land. The proposal was on public exhibition from 24 August to 21 September 2015 and the exhibition material remains available to view (by request) at Penrith Civic Centre or online at http://yoursaypenrith.com.au/StMarysTownCentre. The process that Council must follow to exhibit and consider the proposal requires an independently chaired public hearing. The chair of the hearing will then provide Council with a report on the hearing, which will also be made public. The hearing will commence at 5.30pm on Wednesday, 21 October 2015 at St Marys Corner Community and Cultural Precinct. Please note the amendment of the original date and time for the hearing (13 October 2015 at 6pm) that was published on 25 September 2015. There may be additional sessions arranged subject to the number of people who wish to address the hearing. If you wish to address the hearing, you will need to register. This can be done by completing the form available on Council’s website or from our Penrith or St Marys offices and submitting it to Council by 5pm on 19 October 2015. Alternatively, you can call 4732 7703 to register. We will request advice on the approximate length of time people would like to speak to allow the hearing schedule to be arranged (a maximum of 15 minutes). You do not have to register to address the hearing, but priority will be given to people who do. In case it is relevant to whether you wish to speak or for how long, please note that the independent chair will also review all written submissions made in response to the recent public exhibition.

FREE EVENT

The chair has also indicated he will welcome any written material provided at the hearing itself. If you have any queries about the public hearing or how to complete the registration form, please contact Matthew Rose on 4732 7703 or matthew.rose@penrith.city

Pool warning ahead of hot summer Parents encouraged to be vigilant after worrying increase in drowning deaths in children JADE ALIPRANDI

ith summer fast approaching, swimming and pool safety organisations are highlighting the importance of swim safety and reminding parents to be vigilant with their children around backyard pools. As part of the Royal Life Saving Society’s ‘Closing the Gate on Backyard Pool Drowning’ campaign, the organisation recently released the National Drowning Report for 2015 which found a 30 per cent increase in drowning deaths in children under five in Australia, with over 54 per cent happening in swimming pools and portable pools. Marketing and Business Development Manager at Nepean Aquatic Centre, Julie Fletcher, said parents should focus on the main pillars of pool safety before allowing their children near the pool area. “The main one is to be aware at all times and to constantly supervise the children, which everyone should know,” Ms Fletcher said. “There should be a designated nonalcohol-drinking adult supervising and the pool should be behind a gated area to prevent the children from accidentally walking too close to the pool.

W

“Portable pools should always be emptied between swims and can be refilled the next day so that it is never left unattended while it’s full.” Ms Fletcher said one of the most important parts when it comes to children swimming is for at least one parent to be trained in CPR. “Unfortunately our hospital and medical systems are stretched to the maximum sometimes and there is no guarantee they are going to get to our children in time,” she said. “The sooner that CPR can be administered, the better.” Penrith Council’s Swimming Pool Administration Officer, Nicole Meyers, said swimming pool legislation requires all pools and spa pools, capable of holding 30 centimetres or more of water, to be registered and properly fenced. “Portable and inflatable pools seem like a cheap way to stay cool during summer... but people don’t really stop to consider the danger they present,” Mrs Meyers said. Owners who don’t properly fence their pools risk a fine of $550. Pools also have to be registered at swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au. Registration is free, and those who don’t register risk incurring a fine of $220.

The trouble with used cars

Making their Marc on Penrith

STELA TODOROVIC

Boost to Penrith CBD with popular cafe to trial night-time trade

The NSW Department of Fair Trading is used to people complaining, and in the last financial year alone a total of 46,973 complaints were lodged. While used cars were bumped down from second to third place, they remain high on the list indicating that dissatisfaction with the industry is still running high. 2,441 complaints were lodged about used cars in 2014/15. Mechanic Terry Spincic from the NRMA MotorServe in Penrith suggests that when purchasing a used car it’s important to separate your emotions. “No one ever buys a car without feeling love for it and that’s the first mistake people make, you must pay attention to other things like scratches and faults,” Mr Spincic said. There are a number of factors to take into consideration when you set out to purchase, such as private sellers vs dealerships. One of the biggest risks of privately sold cars is that they don’t come with a warranty, ever. Whereas dealers must provide a three-month warranty on cars over $5,000 as well as repairs. “My first suggestion is to take someone with you on your inspection, someone who knows cars,” Mr Spincic said. “The best thing is for you to test drive the car yourself, the owner knows what’s wrong with the car. “And do your research through the logbook, if you’ve been told there’s only been one owner, the logbook should show that.” Mr Spincic said that these are the things people don’t consider but are the most important when it comes to purchasing new wheels. If purchasing the car through a dealer, Mr Spincic recommends getting a prepurchase vehicle inspection that is done independently through the NRMA. “It’s better to lose $200 and check everything than $10,000 or more later down the track,” he said. Tenancy issues topped the list of complaints in 2014/15 with 4,045 complaints. Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe encouraged people to make use of the advice and support of Fair Trading. “Fair Trading intervention consistently delivers better results, is free, friendly and helps ensure a fair marketplace,” he said.

Henri Marc’s owners Sophia and Aaron Bernecki. Photo: Megan Dunn DALE DRINKWATER

t’s already played a role in changing the cafe culture of Penrith, now Henri Marc is ready for its next challenge. After two years of operation, Henri Marc on High Street is testing out eight weeks of Friday and Saturday night trading. It’s set to be a major boost to the Penrith CBD’s night-time economy, which is in desperate need of attention. Henri Marc’s young owners, Sophia and Aaron Bernecki, said their first trial last weekend with friends and family went smoothly, and they look forward to opening it to the community. “We wouldn’t do it if we weren’t committed to it, and we want to get it right in these eight weeks and see how that goes,” Mrs Bernecki said.

I

“We will do two sittings, one at 6pm and one at 8.30pm and we may reserve areas for walk-ins.” Now things have settled, both owners can work on an original dream that was lost amid the hustle and bustle of a morning cafe that quickly became incredibly popular amongst locals. “We always envisioned that we were going to have a four-night-a-week restaurant, but somehow it turned into the beast that is Henri Marc, and we just got caught up in it all,” Mrs Bernecki said. Experienced in fine dining, they look forward to getting back into the swing of it throughout the trial and test out a new dinner menu. “Once we get back into it, we will work it all out... and hopefully that’s straight away,” she laughed. Night-time trade in the Penrith CBD

has been a common goal for Penrith City Council and the Penrith CBD Corporation since the launch of the Penrith Progression campaign. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown was delighted to hear that Henri Marc is putting its best foot forward to create vibrancy and activation in the city centre at night. “When you’ve got that vibrancy, that draws development into the city centre as well. People can then see this is an active space and has a great economy and then people will invest in it,” she said. “Good on them, hats off to them. It’s fabulous news to hear that they are running with that as a pilot project, but I’m just hoping it’s successful and they push on with it.” To enquire about making a booking, email sophia@henrimarc.com.au.

Badgerys Creek Airport

West to reap rewards from airport But Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown says rail link must be part of infrastructure plan DALE DRINKWATER

enrith City Council’s campaign to secure more benefits from a new airport at Badgerys Creek is gaining traction. The NSW Government has now announced a Western Sydney Priority Growth Area, as a site for the future planning for new homes, jobs and infrastructure. Planning Minister Rob Stokes said it is a step forward in the future planning of western Sydney, to ensure the area reaps the full benefits of the Badgerys Creek Airport. “Establishing this Priority Growth Area will maximise the economic and strategic benefits of the airport at Badgerys Creek,” he said. “It will also help bring about the full benefits of the associated $3.6 billion infrastructure plan.” The Department of Planning and Environment will plan a strategy for infrastructure, homes, jobs, and services in the area, that Penrith and Liverpool local governments have been invited to be part of. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown

P

The Western Sydney Priority Growth Area was announced last week. It aims to ensure western Sydney gets true benefits from the new airport at Badgerys Creek

welcomed the announcement of the Priority Growth Area and a say in the planning process. “Since the airport was announced, we’ve been asking for a seat at the table to ensure Penrith benefits from Australia’s most exciting major development in decades,” she said. However, she said there is a glaring omission of a much-needed airport rail link. “I will be using this opportunity to highlight the need for connections via road and rail, to the airport and the North and South West Growth Centres,” she said. “There is a golden opportunity to get this right, before the airport is built, to boost jobs and growth in a region that’s already paying the price of lost productivity through long commutes and inadequate transport access.” Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley believe an airport rail link to Badgerys Creek is crucial for western Sydney’s growth and the airport’s viability. “Building a world-class airport in western Sydney without a matching rail link is just absurd,” Mr Foley said. “It’s a no brainer that Badgerys Creek should be served by public transport from day one.”

Mayor’s News

I used to struggle ... but now school work’s FUN! Most tuition centres are franchises. The Tuition Place is independent and local. This gives you three important advantages: 1. Teaching methods and resources are tailored for the children of the Penrith area, not dictated by a franchisor from far away. 2. If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly. 3. The tuition is more affordable, because a big chunk of what you pay doesn’t go straight to a franchisor.

Events by the River The Nepean River is a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. It boasts playgrounds for the kids, recreation facilities such as boating and fishing as well as covered picnic areas for all to enjoy. The river is Penrith’s best asset and is one of the most talked about and visited destinations in our city. Council’s popular ‘By the River’ series of events continue this weekend with the first of two Sunday Siestas. The markets at Tench Reserve include quality market stalls, free live music and family activities. Be sure to bring the family, friends and picnic blanket while you enjoy a wonderful spring afternoon by the river. The second Sunday Siesta will be held on November 15. One of our most popular events this year at the river was Cinema in the Park. Held at Regatta Park in Emu Plains, the outdoor movie proved so popular we have expanded the offering this time round.

A family movie will be screened one night then on the following night a move screening for older audiences will be held. These will be held on Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5 with details of the movies being released closer to the screening. It will be another great opportunity to pack a picnic dinner while enjoying the great outdoors and some fantastic movies. There is so much to enjoy around the Nepean River whether it is at one of Council’s many events or by grabbing the family and spending time outdoors. The popular river walk is a hit with those who want to boost their fitness or simply go for a stroll, there’s the playgrounds for the kids including the new flying fox or if you want to take it easy pull up a seat and relax by the barbecue under the shade. Launched by the Minister for Employment, Senator Michaelia Cash, the programme aims to build the confidence and real life work experience of job seekers and prepare them to meet the expectations of employers. “The National Work Experience Programme will allow young job seekers in particular to connect with real jobs,” Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott said. “The programme will give job seekers in the Penrith area an opportunity to experience a placement in a work-like role so they can showcase their skills to a potential employer.” Employer surveys show that insufficient work experience prevents many job seekers, especially young job seekers, from getting and keeping a job. Ms Scott said work experience teaches job seekers about workplace expectations, and allows them to demonstrate their commitment to work and to learn some practical skills. “I encourage anyone trying to enter the job market to consider the benefits of work experience,” she said. In an initiative which aims to facilitate a transition into a paid role, employers

Lindsay MP Fiona Scott who go on to offer a young person paid employment after their placement may be eligible to receive a wage subsidy of up to $6,500 over 12 months. Eligible job seekers will be able to volunteer to undertake work experience in businesses for up to 25 hours per week for a maximum of four weeks. Importantly, they will continue to receive their income support payment while in an unpaid placement together with a supplement to assist with the costs of participation. Rock your socks this McHappy Day Locals can help families in need by throwing their support behind famous charity event DALE DRINKWATER

ocals can be part of one of the biggest charity events in the world, by rocking their new Ronald McDonald socks this McHappy Day. The long, red and white stripy socks are available for the first time this year, for McHappy Day’s 25th anniversary this Saturday, October 17. McDonald’s Glenmore Park, Penrith, Penrith Leagues, Penrith Plaza, St Marys Village and Werrington licensee, Ian Garton, said proceeds from sales will go towards Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). “The funky new $3 Ronald Socks are a great addition to raise funds and is a fun little way for Penrith residents to be able to support the families of seriously ill children,” he said. This year’s record-breaking goal equates to providing 25,000 nights worth of beds for families across Australia’s 16 Ronald McDonald Houses. “RMHC’s programs help over 25,000 families each year, but there are many more families that need our help,” Mr Garton said. “Our crew here at Macca’s will definitely

L

Ursula, Kynan, Tom and Mel from McDonald’s High Street. Photo: Megan Dunn be sporting the socks and we’d like to encourage everyone to join us.” Frank Meduri, licensee of McDonald’s Cambridge Gardens, St Marys North and North Penrith, said there is a lot of pres-

sure on families who have a child with a serious illness. “For those families who have to attend a hospital hundreds of kilometres away from their home, Ronald McDonald Houses not

only provide a warm and inviting home away from home, but somewhere where they can keep their family together and not have to worry about where they are staying each night,” he said. “Collectively, we can help McHappy Day provide another 25,000 nights’ accommodation for families in need.” One of Australia’s favourite musicians, Ricki-Lee, has been announced as this year’s Ambassador for McHappy Day. She has had a long and close association with RMHC since she participated in her first ever charity activity – visiting the families at a Ronald McDonald House in Sydney in 2004 when she was on ‘Australian Idol’. “When I first visited the kids and their families at a House back in 2004, it was both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time,” she said. “What they are going through every day is something no one should have to go through.” Apart from the socks, residents can also support by buying, signing and displaying a $1 Helping Hand at their local restaurant, buying a Big Mac, or donating online via www.rmhc.org.au/mchappyday. Every McDonald’s restaurant in Australia is involved in McHappy Day.

How Penrith led a powerful evolution DALE DRINKWATER

new plaque at Penrith Station was unveiled last week, commemorating 125 years of electricity in Penrith. The community and Councillors turned out to witness the event, that Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said marks a milestone in Penrith’s 200 year history. “The electric light station in Belmore Street stamped Penrith as a modern town and a place of innovation,” she said. “On October 3, 1890, Penrith became the first in the Sydney region and the third in NSW to make use of electricity.” Cr McKeown said the Penrith Mayor at the time, Thomas Richard Smith, was a ‘noisy’ advocate for both an electric lighting station and a reservoir in the town. “When the switch was flicked by the then Mayoress of Sydney, electric light was brought to 60 houses, a handful of businesses and illuminated our streets,” she said. “The reaction to the first incandescent light was literally electric. The day the light was switched on was a public holiday and thousands turned out for those celebrations.” Cr McKeown stepped off a train from the

A

city for the unveiling, as did the Mayoress 125 years ago. “I’m all about being authentic,” she laughed. Penrith City Library’s historical archives buff, Lorraine Stacker, said the fact that Penrith was the first town in Sydney and the third town in the whole of NSW to get electricity was very bold. “To light the town, the people of Penrith had to decide whether they’d go with gas or with this ‘new technology’, electricity,” she said. “They had a look around, went down to Young to see what it was like, and came back very enthused about it, saying that it would be a very good thing.” Ms Stacker said electricity brought business, more families and made Penrith a bit of an attraction, but it didn’t come without a cost. “We had fellows from Freemantle Council, on the other side of Australia, coming to have a look at how Penrith did electric lighting,” she said. “It almost bankrupt the town though. They over budgeted and because the whole of Australia then went into an economic depression soon after, Penrith struggled for a lot of years. “But, they still believed they were doing the right thing by having electricity.”

Students help remote Nepal community rebuild after quake

Amanda gets on her bike to raise funds for medical research JADE ALIPRANDI

rskine Park resident Amanda ReidTucker is taking on the daunting task of riding over 550 kilometres on a bicycle this month. Ms Reid-Tucker will be taking part in the ‘Great Cycle Challenge’, where participants are able to pledge how many kilometres they do in the month of October and create a goal of the funds they would like to raise. All funds raised by participants go to the Children’s Medical Research Institute. Not only has Ms Reid-Tucker pledged to ride 400 kilometres as part of the Great Cycle Challenge but she is also going to ride 155 kilometres around the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith within just eight hours. Ms Reid-Tucker said she’s expecting it to be one tough ride. “I haven’t ridden my bike in ages so to be able to get back into it while raising money to help fight kids’ cancer is a fantastic way to do it, even if the challenge is a bit crazy,” she said. “I’ve known and lost a few people to cancer and I just can’t imagine what it would be like to have a child who would be suffering every day from it.” Ms Reid-Tucker has already started her goal of 400 kilometres and is hoping to raise $3100.

tudents of Penrith Anglican College are fresh home from their trip to Nepal and say they wouldn’t hesitate to do it all again. 24 students and 15 adults began their two-week trip to Nepal on September 19, ready and willing to help the Nepalese community rebuild a school that collapsed after an earthquake shook the village in March this year. Dean of Students, Cathie Graydon said they cleared between 150 to 200 tonnes of rubble.

S

“This village is really remote and we were the first Westerners that most of the people there had ever seen,” Ms Graydon said. The school surpassed their original fundraising goal of $10,000 managing to collect $12,500 which they used to buy books, computers, white boards and readers, among other items. Year 12 student Lachlan Burke said he would recommend the trip to anyone. “It was so cool to help out with the rebuilding of the school because the locals appreciated it so much,” he said. This was the school’s fifth trip to Nepal and their first to this village.

Penrith City Council is supporting White Ribbon Day to help bring an end to violence against women in our community. Council will host a free community event, the Twilight River Walk, which will be held on Wednesday, November 25, along the Nepean River. The 3.5 kilometre walk will commence from Weir Reserve at 5.30pm, and will trace the banks of the river, ending at Tench Reserve. At the end, there will be a variety of food stalls, light music entertainment and the taking of the White Ribbon Oath. Council wish to acknowledge the men and women in uniform, who are more often than not the first people on the scene during domestic violence incidents in the local area. If you would like to, come along and show your support for ending violence against women. For more information call 4732 8028.

dential apartments with basement parking were approved, including associated landscaping. The building that is set to be located at 55 to 66 Lakeside Parade, Jordan Springs, was applied for by Jordan Spring Pty Ltd. The determined development application’s cost is not disclosed on Council’s website. Council will make a submission to the NSW Department of Family and Community Services (FACS), who are undertaking a reform of their Targeted Earlier Intervention Programs. Council will make suggestions around the program’s service system design, its delivery, improvements that can be made to the program, ways to support it and how FACS can manage the reform process. Council will also highlight how its own programs around the community, culture, children, neighbourhoods and parks, and recreational facilities contribute to Penrith’s wellbeing. The next Ordinary Council Meeting will be held on Monday, October 26, and will be the meeting where comments from the 2013-2014 Annual Statements are presented. Breakfast for a cause

Learn the skills to help save a life. Suicide is preventable. Anyone can make a difference. Attend the award-winning ASIST workshop and learn to: • recognize people at risk of suicide, • talk to them, hear their stories, and understand their situations, then • help them stay safe with a life-affirming intervention. The two-day ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) workshop is open to anyone 16 or older. Widely used by both professionals and the general public, ASIST offers something to every participant, no matter how experienced.

Why take ASIST? LIFE-SAVING: Anyone can experience thoughts of suicide. By giving participants the skills to help friends, family members, colleagues, and clients stay alive, ASIST supports suicide-safer communities. TRUSTED: ASIST is the most widely used suicide intervention training workshop in the world. Over 100,000 people attend ASIST each year in more than 30 countries. ENGAGING: ASIST is a dynamic, hands-on workshop that uses adult learning principles. It includes presentations, discussions, and audiovisuals, plus simulations to practice intervention skills.

Last year’s fundraising breakfast at Tanti Financial Services was a hit JADE ALIPRANDI

he team at Tanti Financial Services in Emu Plains are hoping for bigger and better this year when they hold their free pink breakfast next week. Held for the first time last year, the team raised almost $5,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation but are hoping to double that this year. Co-Business Owner at Tanti Financial Services and RA Carroll Accountants, Tony Tanti, said holding the breakfast is a good feeling. “We are very lucky with our health and often we all can take things for granted – to hold this breakfast makes us feel good as we are able to put something back into the local community by raising muchneeded funds,” he said. Co-Business Owner of the company, Adam Tanti, said they’ve done a lot of

T

work with the Breast Cancer Foundation before and this latest breakfast would build on those efforts. “We have worked with them numerous times but it’s a nice thing to be able to raise some funds for them too,” he said. “We all have friends and family who have been touched by cancer at some point so we want to invite the community to help in our efforts in raising some funds for the foundation.” The breakfast will run from 7.30am until around 12pm with bacon and egg sandwiches, sausages, pancakes, a chocolate wheel, a drink stall, a face painter, and entertainment all on offer on the day. Tanti Financial Services asks for a donation from participants which will go to the Breast Cancer Foundation. The breakfast will be held at 101 Great Western Highway in Emu Plains on Saturday, October 24.

PROVEN: ASIST works. A major 2013 study showed that the ASIST intervention process significantly reduces thoughts of suicide and helps people at risk feel more hopeful about living.1 COST-EFFECTIVE: A 2015 RAND Corporation study found that for every $1 spent on the ASIST program in California, the state government would save $50 in medical expenses and associated costs.2

BUSINESS So Sometimes we all need a little bit of perspective

Relying on the same old methods can cause issues

Y

ou have probably seen some of your friends complain about something trivial via social media, and they might include the hashtag ‘first world problem’. It is a way of sharing a frustration but also acknowledging that it is only something that a privileged few in the world could actually complain about. The very fact that you are reading this article means that you have an advantage over the one billion people around the world who can’t read. If you’re reading it with a coffee in hand, made with clean drinking water, you are more fortunate than the nearly one billion people who have no access to clean water or flushable toilets. Although you may have some health issues, you have access to health care – again, nearly one billion people have no access to health care of any description. If you are earning over $50,000 a year, you are in the top one per cent of earners worldwide (2.2 billion people live on less than $2 per day). Why all these statistics? Sometimes it is important to get some perspective.

The fact that you have had access to an education and the opportunity to create a business, means that you are vastly wealthier compared to the majority of people in the world. Sometimes in the day to day of running a business, we can get jaded and negative about all the ‘woes’ that we have. But I think it is useful to remember that on your ‘worst’ day, the majority of people around the globe would trade places with you in a heartbeat. None of this is intended to make you feel guilty about what you do have! But it is intended to help you ponder the abundance of resources and opportunity that are at your fingertips, and to encourage you not to waste your days bemoaning your difficult circumstances. Yes there will be times when life is hard, even though we live in wealthy circumstances by global comparisons. But perspective has a way of shifting our focus from a negative to a positive outlook and allowing us to make each moment and day count.

C

ontinuing professional development (CPD) is so important in every industry. The world moves so fast and it doesn’t take long for methods to become outdated and outdone. We need to be constantly learning. I often see in both businesses that come in for advice and also from service providers that their methods have become outdated. Their strategies aren’t relevant or ways of thinking have not kept up with time. Regardless of whether you have mandatory CPD criteria to satisfy or your investment in CPD is purely a decision that lies with you, the most satisfying results are achieved by professionals who drive their own CPD rather than waiting till there is an urgent need to satisfy their target market. Continuing professional development is important because it ensures you continue to be competent in your chosen profession. It should be seen as an ongoing process and something that continues throughout your career. After all, complacency is not welcome in any successful business.

CPD: • Ensures your capabilities maintain a competitive advantage. • Helps you continue to make a meaningful contribution to your team. You become more effective in the workplace. This assists you to advance in your career and move into new positions where you can lead, manage, influence, coach and mentor others. • Ensures that you maintain and enhance the knowledge and skills you need to deliver a professional service to your customers, clients and the community. • Ensures that you and your knowledge stay relevant and up to date. You are more aware of the changing trends and directions in your profession. The pace of change is probably faster than it has ever been. • Helps you to stay interested and interesting. Experience is a great teacher, but it does mean that we tend to do what we have done before. CPD opens you up to new possibilities, new knowledge and new skill areas.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

Penrith and sport go hand in hand From cricket to golf, rugby league and hockey, Penrith has an extraordinary history when it comes to sport. Nathan Taylor takes a look back at some of the region’s sporting past... Penrith golfers in the 1930s. Photo: Penrith City Library

P

enrith has always been a city that’s loved its sport. Whether it’s watching it or playing it – Penrith locals can’t get enough of being outdoors and giving something a go. In recent weeks, the Weekender has featured the local history of tennis and harness racing but now it’s time to look at some other sports that have made it big over the decades. According to the book Penrith: The Makings of a City, sporting amenities improved in the Penrith area during the 1950s and 60s. In 1959, Cumberland County Council acquired 100 acres in Penrith for open spaces, handing it over to Penrith Council for recreational purposes. With major works undertaken in 1960 to improve playing fields at Jamison and Ridge parks, it gave the city first class playing fields. By 1964, the city had 38 sporting fields, 22 for cricket, 14 for rugby and rugby league, and one each for hockey and baseball.

Cricket has a long history in the Penrith area with teams already in existence by the 1870s. Numerous teams have come and gone over the years but in February 1892, a famous cricket match was played between the Nepean District team and Lord Sheffield’s touring English team. In 1968, the N.A. Hunter Pavilion, named after Norman Hunter, was opened at Howell Oval. In 1973, the Penrith District Cricket Club entered the Sydney Grade Cricket competition. Sponsorship by the Penrith Panthers gave the funds to recruit players. One of Australia’s greatest cricketers, the late Richie Benaud, was born in Penrith in 1930. Although his family later moved to Parramatta, his brother John, another Test player, was the motivator and force behind Penrith’s first Sydney Grade premiership win in the 1978-79 season. Another sport which has made a name for itself in Penrith, thanks the area’s picturesque surrounds, is golf. The Glenmore Country Golf Club, which had lapsed during the war, was revived in

1949. Red Cow publican Irene Woodland purchased Glenmore in 1947. After her death in 1988, it was sold to Australian-based Korean interests who, in 1993, redesigned the golf course and the club was reopened in 1996 as Glenmore Heritage Valley Golf Club. After the Penrith Golf Club was established on its own course on the Northern Road in 1964, golfing numbers steadily increased. Another golf course was established on the Defence Base in Orchard Hills in 1964. Four years later, the Leonay Golf Club was re-formed as a subsidiary of the Emu Plains Sport and Recreation Club. Of all the sports that have been played in the Penrith area, it was rugby league that bridged the gap between the playing of sport and the social fabric of the community. Although rugby league and its club, the Penrith Panthers, have been taken well beyond the city’s boundaries, rugby union continued to maintain a high level of support in the community. In 1965, the Nepean District Rugby Union

Football Club was formed and in 1969, the club was invited to join the expanded Sydney competition. A name change in 1981 to Penrith Rugby Club more closely identified it with the local area. After several successful seasons in the lower grades, the club was promoted to First Division in 1995. The team, known as the Penrith Emus, has its home ground at Nepean Rugby Park in North Penrith, which is leased long term from Penrith Council and comprises of two playing fields, training areas and clubhouse. The Australian Racing Drivers Club established drag racing on the site of the original Castlereagh Airstrip. While the track had been in operation since 1947, it wasn’t until 1959 that it emerged as a popular attraction where the American-style dragsters were raced in NSW for the first time. After nearly 40 years in operation, the track closed in 1984. In future weeks, the Weekender will take readers on a journey of the biggest sport to make a splash in town – rugby league.

The magic of the movies KATE REID

B

ehind the unassuming facade of the brick building that sits on the edge of the Great Western Highway in Glenbrook lies a world full of stories

and memories. From the magical to the humorous, the dramatic to the spooky, for almost five decades now Glenbrook Cinema has been offering movie buffs an intimate and personalised film experience. The opening of the cinema was the realisation of a childhood dream for Managing Director Ron Curran, who purchased the business in 1968. “When I was a kid I used to make a movie theatre out of a butterbox.... I used to put strings on curtains and make curtains move and so forth. I wanted to

have a chain of butterboxes when I grew up,” he laughed. “I was just so fascinated with the movie business.” Walk through the doors and Ron’s passion for cinema is clear. Black and white photos adorn the walls, chandeliers hang from the ceiling and the staff can often be found dressed as characters from films. Every little detail has been accounted for, making a trip to the cinema about more than just the film. “I always thought when I have my own movie theatre I’ll make sure I have the special touches, just to make people feel like it’s a special event,” Ron said. “It’s not just shoving a poster out the front, putting a picture on the screen and taking the money.” This attention to detail extends beyond just the aesthetics of the theatre. A self confessed ‘tech nut’ Ron’s other passion is providing the highest quality filmviewing experience. “I love the technology of movies and

have always tried to be ahead of the game in that regard,” he said. While the cinema has to compete with multi-screen complexes, Ron believes there is one major advantage to having a single screen. “You can be very selective and only present what you believe to be good movies,” he said. “We go a lot by track record, if we know the directors, we know the actors, we know the production teams, it’s a pretty good bet that you’re in for something good when they come out with something new. “Sometimes you take a punt on some new talent. Most of the time it works.” ‘It works’ could easily describe the cinema itself. Whether it’s the quaint decor, the warm staff or the $12 movie tickets, Glenbrook Cinema proves that local business can thrive, even in a market place that’s dominated by the big guys. For more information on Glenbrook Cinema visit www.glenbrookcinema. com.au or call 4739 4433.

Taylor TV NEWS

Ê ‘TBL Families’ is doing really well for Channel Ten at the moment, and it’s interesting to note that the home used in the series is now up for sale. The two hectare property, located in Duffys Forest in North Sydney, is on the market for more than $8 million. The European-style chateau features high-end finishes throughout and a floor plan that includes a vast parents’ retreat, four other bedrooms, formal and informal living areas, a study, a separate teen retreat, swimming pool and tennis court. It also comes with equestrian facilities, including eight insulated stables, five yards, a vet room, truck port, two paddocks and a dressage arena. Ê US thriller ‘Zoo’, based on a novel by James Patterson, is getting a second season. The series, which airs on Ten, has been doing fairly well in the ratings both here and abroad so the announcement of a second season comes as no surprise. ‘Zoo’ was recently presold to Netflix with a lucrative streaming deal.

Ê I must say I’m thoroughly enjoying the coverage of the new season of the National Basketball League (NBL) on Fox Sports this past week. The five

year deal with the NBL will see Fox Sports News 500 broadcast every game live from Wednesday through to Sunday every single week, this means you don’t need to be subscribed to the sports package to be able to watch. It’s also great to hear well known rugby league callers Andrew Voss, Warren Smith and Matt Russell join the coverage as expert commentators. If Round 1 was anything to go by, it’s shaping up to be a thrilling season ahead.

Ê US animated series ‘Bob’s Burgers’ has been renewed for two more seasons. Airing on ELEVEN in Australia, Fox has ordered a seventh and eighth season to air in the years ahead. Ê Foxtel’s BBC First will premiere a three part drama based on actual events from a scary incident in the 1970s. Inspired by the world’s most documented poltergeist incident, ‘The Enfield Haunting’ is a chilling new series based on the terrifying and bizarre real events that took place at an ordinary house in 1977. ‘The Enfield Haunting’ begins tonight, Friday, October 16 at 9.40pm. Ê ‘What Really Happens in Thailand’ has been moved from Mondays to Thursdays.

REVIEW W EI V E R

Aloha

Rated PG // KATE REID ‘Aloha’ sees military contractor Brian Gilcrest (Bradley Cooper) return to Hawaii on assignment where he ends up reconnecting with his former girlfriend Tracy Woodside (Rachel McAdams) who is now married with a family. During his time on the island he starts to fall for fighter pilot Allison Ng (Emma Stone) while working on the project given to him by billionaire Carson Welch (Bill Murray), who has an ulterior motive behind the space project. ‘Aloha’ has copped a beating by critics and after seeing the movie I can understand why. The narrative is a bit all over the place and at times too sentimental, even by Cameron Crowe standards.

BOOK

Considering ‘Aloha’ was directed by an Academy Award-winning director – who brought us feel good flicks such as ‘Almost Famous’ and ‘Jerry Maguire’ – and features an all star cast including Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, Emma Stone and Alec Baldwin, there’s a lot of potential here that’s gone to waste. The story explores the themes of love, tradition and morality, but in reality it doesn’t cover any of these subjects very effectively. There’s no clear direction and the characters don’t have the same level of charm as other Cameron Crowe productions. My advice: skip this one and watch Crowe’s previous films instead.

Choosing Hope

Kaitlin Roig Debellis with Robin Gaby Fisher // JADE ALIPRANDI Choosing Hope details the harrowing Sandy Hook massacre that took place on December 14, 2012. Written by first grade teacher Kaitlin Roig-Debellis, every mere detail about the fateful day is written down on paper. Roig-Debellis not only discusses what her life is like now, but also what her life was like before the shooting took place, demonstrating just how much she endured and how she decided to choose hope and faith to move forward. A well-written account of how one day changed this woman’s life forever.

Traditionally, rugby league fans have been let down when it comes to video games. With EA Sports last producing a rugby league game almost 20 years ago, NRL fans have been left with other developers to produce games, such as Big Ant Studios, which is behind ‘Rugby League Live 3’. And despite vast improvements on previous games, rugby league fans will still be feeling very jealous of soccer aficionados who enjoy the brilliance of FIFA each year.

CHOCOLATE MAKING  ................................................................... WINE AND MEAD MAKING  ...................................................................

On the plus side, the game is much easier to handle than previous versions. I can still remember playing ‘Rugby League Live 2’ for hours without putting one good kick down field – it simply wasn’t user friendly enough, but that issue in particular seems to have been fixed this time around. Players can choose between five difficulty levels, and if you’re after a laugh or your toddler wants a game, the lowest difficulty is perfect. It’s frighteningly easy even when playing for the first time – you almost wonder why it’s there.

Things obviously get more difficult as you select higher levels, and when on the most difficult options you will certainly need to have sorted out the various tactics available in both attack and defence. Visually my favourite part of ‘Rugby League Live 3’ is the detail put into the individual stadiums – as a rugby league fan with knowledge of most of Australia’s key NRL stadiums, I can tell you they’ve done an extremely good job in replicating even minor details. Even venues like TIO Stadium in Darwin, where only one or two NRL games are played each year, are presented incredibly well. Where the game’s developers haven’t done such a good job is the players themselves. While it’s obvious who some players are – especially from a distance if they have a unique hairstyle or wear head gear – the faces themselves are in many instances nowhere near reality. This is a huge improvement on previous games and in fact, is definitely the best rugby league game ever, but it still leaves many boxes unticked.

WINE LIST

DAVID ELLIS

Special drop TALENT

I

t’s not often we get to enjoy more than a small tasting glass of a $100 bottle of red, but just this month we shared the full bottle of just such a wine with a mate celebrating a birthday, and he surprised us even more with the revelation he’d got a second bottle in the cellar for his granddaughter’s 21st in 2030. Lucky granddaughter, and lucky everyone else who’ll be there for the occasion, for this Katnook Estate Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 is up there with the very, very best of them, and winemaker Wayne Stehbens reckons it’s only going to get better over the coming 15 to 18 years. Justifiably proud, Wayne says this wine’s the result of a vintage in Coonawarra that was one of the finest on record. An early, warm, dry and low yielding one that led to fruit of intense aromas, great depth of flavours, and fine tannins. And from all this he selected only the most outstanding parcels of fruit from specific vineyard rows. At $100 enjoy on its own for that special occasion or celebration. One to note (pictured): With summer just around the corner, a great drop to think about with seafoods, salads and lighter meal options is Verdelho, a wine whose homeland is Portugal but does exceptionally well in the Hunter. And one particularly good one to look for is a McGuigan Bin Series No. 6000 Verdelho 2014, a wine that’s full-bodied, fruit-driven, refreshing and easy drinking, with lovely fruit salad and lime flavours and a zesty finish.

When dealing with others, being kind of heart – and offering sensible advice – is a winning double. The Venus/Pluto trine encourages deep emotions, intense connections and plenty of passion. So make sure you get up-close-and-personal with someone special this week. See a movie or go to a concert this weekend.

Research projects and paying close attention to details are highlighted, as Mercury and Pluto activate your study gene. Your fickle attention span will also be tested, when a project demands that you concentrate for more than 60 seconds. If you focus your mind and deepen your thinking, you’ll get the job done.

Are you having romantic rumbles or platonic partnership problems? The more emotionally stubborn you are, the more frustrating the week will be. Strive to be extra cooperative, and have the confidence to speak from the heart and say what’s really on your mind. On Friday, expect some welcome good news.

With Saturn in your social media zone, you have to work extra hard to get your message out to the world so push yourself to post and publish; socialise and circulate; converse and communicate. Pablo Picasso: “Action is the foundational key to all success”.

Have you got a problem that’s bothering you? Worrying about it will get you nowhere. Friday is a fabulous day to slow down and look within, as you meditate and contemplate. Listen to the wisdom of your inner voice. Do you love your work and does your job stimulate your creativity?

Are you being obsessively private? Scorpios can be very secretive, mysterious and enigmatic but avoid being a lone wolf – or should that be a lone Scorpion? Just remember that what you hide from others, you can also hide from yourself! So strive to be more open and honest in the way you communicate.

When it comes to plans for the future, you’re full of innovative ideas and creative schemes. But can you tell the difference between a delicious daydream and a dodgy delusion? Pluto demands that you dig deep and set substantial goals that are worthy of your talents. Strive to get the balance right.

ment of gross motor skills and improved strength, coordination and balance, as baby is supported by the water and is less restricted by gravity. Warm water combined with gentle exercise will relax your baby and stimulate their appetite, with many parents reporting that their babies usually eat and sleep better after swimming. Additionally, the uninterrupted quality time whilst swimming facilitates an even deeper bond between parent and child, and as swimming becomes a natural part of your child’s weekly routine, a healthy exercise habit is created. I am also asked ‘How long will it take for my child to learn to swim?’ ... but more on that next week!

As we head towards summer, one of the best things a parent can do to keep their child safer around water is to make sure they start Learn To Swim classes as soon as possible. But I am often asked ‘How early should my child start swimming lessons?’. On Tuesday, October 13, a new range of laws came into effect requiring Telcos such as Telstra and other carriers to start storing people’s metadata in relation to email, Internet, mobile phone use and landline use. As discussed in last week’s column, this means that your Telco will now be required to store data about who you call, the telephone calls you receive, the location of both parties during such calls, the duration of calls, and similar data in relation to emails, Internet usage and text messaging.

One of the more controversial aspects of the new laws is the fact that this information can potentially be accessed without a warrant, which means that there is no system of checks and balances by the judicial system. The absence of a warrant means that there is no Magistrate or Judge who will assess each individual case and determine whether it is appropriate for the

relevant authority to access the data in question. It is important to note that at this stage these laws do not apply to websites that you access. The rationale behind these laws is to ensure that the relevant authorities can easily access information with regard to suspected national security risks, however the reality is that the same laws apply to every day law abiding citizens. Despite the opinion of conspiracy theorists however, the government has neither the time nor resources to monitor text messages about ordinary Australians’ social plans or basic interactions between friends or family. The reality is that these laws will likely have very little long term effect on everyday Australians using telecommunication devices. An interesting question however is the impact that this will have on piracy laws, and more importantly, enforcement. Now that Internet providers are required to store IP addresses, this may provide an opportunity for authorities to more easily access information that identifies people who pirate music, movies and television shows online.

Walker FINANCE

The growing cost of eating healthy

owner and manager Bank of Queensland anthony.walker@ boq.com.au

is not the only cause of our expanding waistlines. Many people have pointed out that the growing cost of fresh produce and lean meats puts unsustainable stress on their bank accounts, forcing many to resort to fast food, which is typically as high in cholesterol as it is in convenience. In fact, the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that, on

average, 35 per cent of our diet is comprised of ‘discretionary foods’, which are typically unhealthy and high in sugars, saturated fats, salt or alcohol. Of course, we all know the benefits of healthy eating, but is it always financially viable? Considering a trolley-full of leafy greens, lean meats and seasonal fruits – perhaps enough food for a few days of lunches and dinners – can easily cost $100 or more, the prospect of a $5 combo from your favourite fast food joint is understandably appealing. Findings from the Australian National University support this notion. Led By Professor Sharon Friel, the study found that the cost of food had a significant impact on the type of groceries people buy, forcing shoppers to load up their bags with cheaper and less nutritious goods. The research determined that healthy foods cost as much as 30 per cent more than their unhealthy counterparts, bringing the cost of groceries up to an unrealistic total for the bank accounts of low-income families. Always prepare a shopping list before hitting the supermarket to ensure you only buy essential items that have strong nutritional content. And have you considered local markets instead?

RELIGION

Most of us have been there. Waiting, sitting, in the doctor’s surgery. Waiting to see doctors. Waiting for treatment. Waiting for x-rays and scans and blood tests. Waiting for results. Waiting in outer waiting rooms to be then moved into the inner waiting room where you wait some more! So much waiting! What do you do while you wait? It’s an interesting experience. The people you meet. The things you see and

Waiting is an interesting experience

hear. Cups of tea and coffee. Arnott’s arrowroot biscuits. Watching uninspiring TV shows and senseless commercials about vacuum cleaners or knife sets or the latest miracle beauty product. Sharing people’s joy at good news and their devastation when results don’t go the way they’re hoping for. And that is a big question;

what happens when hope is gone? The Bible describes Christian hope as an “anchor for the soul, firm and secure”. This means that even in the face of the worst news, Christian people are able to rest firm on the real, certain sure hope that is found in Jesus. One of the great joys of being united to Jesus, of being able to trust in the God who keeps His promises is not that we escape hardship, but that our hope in Jesus gives us a firm anchor for our soul! It is an anchor that holds us fast even in the most troubling of times. The Bible’s words are not just words on a page. They are real words of comfort that can sustain your life. In fact, the confident hope that Jesus gives is a hope which has sustained the lives of millions of people throughout history. Do not be afraid; put your hope in Jesus. See you next week.

Right about now people up and down the country are wishing they’d spent the winter getting fit instead of hibernating the cold months away in front of the tele with hot chocolate in hand. Staying healthy all year round is an important aspect of living a balanced life, but it’s something that many of us tend to overlook. Almost two in three adults are considered overweight or obese. Kate

Reid NUTRITION

Fruit is not the reason why we’ve seen an increase in preventable chronic diseases. Neither is whole grains or dairy. So why do we seem to be waging a war on healthy foods? Visit a health blog or jump on Facebook and you’ll see a range of information suggesting that one, or all of these foods, are the culprits when it comes to poor health. But the truth of the matter is that we’ve seen an increase in diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease, because we eat too much calorie dense

Don’t place blame in the wrong place Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6

and nutrient devoid foods and don’t move enough. Not because we’ve had a few extra pieces of fruit. When it comes down to it most of us know what foods are nutritious and what foods should be enjoyed in moderation. But yet we’ve been brainwashed into thinking fruit, whole grains and dairy are the problem.

The banana you had for breakfast is not the problem, eating cake too often is. The glass of milk you had with lunch is not the problem, going through a whole tub of ice-cream every few days is. The piece of wholegrain bread you had with dinner is not the problem, consuming a whole meat lovers pizza on a regular basis is. Get the picture? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m under no illusion that what I’m saying is news. But unfortunately the message of moderation and variety seems to be getting more and more lost in among the cries of ‘but fruit is full of sugar!’ Yes intolerances exist, and for those who experience them some of these foods will need to be avoided, but for everyone else fruit, whole grains and dairy are nutritious options that don’t deserve the scorn they attract. They contain important nutrients including calcium, fibre, iron, B-group vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, the list goes on. So let’s put a stop to this fear mongering and get back to the basics. Because identifying and treating the real problem is the only way to improve the health of the nation. Have a good weekend!

PET HEALTH

We are coming up to the warmer months of the year when snakes tend to be out in full force. With the heat, snakes become more active and with this, unfortunately snake bites become more frequent. Dogs can be very inquisitive and are generally at highest risk of being bitten by snakes. Cats are also susceptible to snake bites, especially those that like to hunt. The most common area for a snake bite on a pet is on the head and legs. Snakes are generally timid

Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital

creatures and stay away from humans and pets. It is often our inquisitive pets that seek out snakes and tend to lead to problems. Trying to minimise areas where snakes are most likely to hide will decrease the likelihood of snakes; wood piles, clutter and long grass tends to give snakes hiding areas in our backyards. If you suspect that your

pet has been bitten by a snake, try to keep your pet calm and relaxed and seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. The sooner your pet is seen by a vet, the higher the chances of a recovery. If you can identify the snake or even take a photo, this will be very helpful so we are able to treat your pet. However, never try to catch or kill a snake. If we are unsure if your pet has been bitten or unsure of the snake type, a snake bite detection test can be performed on your pet’s blood or urine. In Penrith, we tend to see two main types of venomous snakes; either red belly black snakes or brown snakes and both types of snake bites are potentially fatal. The brown snake tends to cause more neurological symptoms such as collapse and difficulty breathing. The red belly black snake is more likely to cause haemolysis and breakdown of blood. However either snake can cause both symptoms with disastrous consequences if left untreated. Treatment involves the administration of an antivenom. Antivenom is very expensive and can mean treatment is costly.

TOYOTA

How Toyota plans to fuel the future

oyota Australia predicts that the commercial sector will play a vital part in the roll-out of fuel cell vehicles in the future. As part of this vision, refuelling stations would be located in depots across the country to help fast-track the implementation of this new technology. Since commercial vehicles return to a central depot each day, only one refuelling station would be required at each depot. This not only means fuel cell vehicles could be introduced in Australia a lot quicker, but it also allows more time for the relevant infrastructure to be rolled out throughout the country for private vehicle use. This prediction comes as Toyota’s first commercially available fuel-cell vehicle, the Mirai, will be on show in Sydney at the 6th World Hydrogen Technologies Convention. Toyota Australia President Dave Buttner said this would be the ideal pilot program should fuel cell vehicles be introduced locally. “Hydrogen is a promising alternate fuel for the future and the Mirai is the exciting technology that Toyota is offering globally. As Australians, we want to eventually be part of that,” he said. The Mirai is already on sale in Japan and also available in the US and Europe from this autumn.

Famous Triathlon to be hotly contested Stuart Ayres visiting Atmosphere Health and Fitness Club last week NATHAN TAYLOR

riathletes from all over Australia and around the world are preparing to descend on Penrith next week for the 34th anniversary of the famous Nepean Triathlon. The Triathlon, which is regarded as Australia’s oldest, will be held on October 24 and 25 at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. Four different distance triathlons will be held over the weekend, which has already attracted 1300 competitors, making it one

T

of the largest in the country. The main race on Sunday will feature 30 of the best professional triathletes the sport has to offer, with a number of Olympians set to take part. 2014 Nepean Triathlon champions and Australian Olympians Aaron Royle and Ashleigh Gentle are early favourites to take out the race again while Beijing Olympics bronze medallist Emma Moffatt and recently crowned world U23 champion Jake Birtwhistle will be hot on their heels. Other competitors who have also shown recent good form and are set to compete

next Sunday are Ryan Bailie, British Olympian Stuart Hayes, Great Britain triathlon champion Emma Pallant, Irish ITU representative Ben Shaw and Ironman Australia winner Michelle Bremer. Last week NSW Sports Minister and Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres visited race sponsor Atmosphere Health and Fitness Club to meet with Director Kristelle Vicary, General Manager Dane Wigg and Warwick Brennan to raise awareness for the upcoming event. A host of sponsors have combined to ensure the Nepean weekend remains one of Australia’s classic triathlons with

Atmosphere Health and Fitness Club, Cellarbrations, Gulf Western Oil, Destination NSW and Penrith Council, all strong supporters of the race. “Penrith is a wonderful place to compete with the Lakes precinct offering one of the most fantastic triathlon facilities in Australia,” Mr Ayres said. “I welcome all competitors to our beautiful city and congratulate them on making the decision to join this iconic event.” The Nepean Triathlon consists of a 1km swim in the Olympic rowing lake, followed by a traffic-free 30km cycle along Castlereagh Road, and then a 10km run.

he Western Sydney Wanderers will look to bounce back from their opening round defeat when they take on Adelaide United tonight at Coopers Stadium. Playing in last Thursday night’s A-League season opener in Parramatta, the new-look Wanderers were made to pay for their mistakes in front of their home fans, punished by the Brisbane Roar 3-1. The only highlight from the Wanderers’ Round 1 loss was that of new recruit Mitch Nichols, who scored Western Sydney’s only goal in the 13th minute. Speaking with the media on Monday morning, the former Perth midfielder said he was over the moon to score in his Wanderers debut. “It was good to get a goal, I haven’t scored in a while,” he said. “That goal will be good for my confidence; it was nice to see my work in the pre-season rewarded.” However, despite his own good performance, the 26-year-old conceded it could take some time for Western Sydney’s new roster to gel together. “Things will take time, there were only a few players from last season that started the game last Thursday,” he said.

New Wanderers recruit Mitch Nichols playing against Brisbane in the recent FFA Cup match in Penrith. Photo: Megan Dunn “We’ve got a lot of new boys from overseas that aren’t used to the league… We’ve got a good enough team to win every game but we’re not the finished product yet.” Fellow new recruit Scott Neville, who picked up a yellow card in the loss, agreed with his teammate’s evaluation of the game. “I think most of Brisbane’s chances came from our mistakes, we need to cut out those errors as soon as possible and keep creating and converting our own chances,” he said. Tonight’s game kicks off at 7.40pm.

Four decades of history in Penrith Don’t fence them in: Local sporting club celebrates 40th anniversary with popular tournament NATHAN TAYLOR

he ancient and elegant sport of fencing has been in existence for centuries, and while its history in Penrith may not be as long, it’s certainly just as a rich. The Penrith Academy of Fencing, located on Regentville Road in Jamisontown, celebrated its 40th anniversary last weekend with the annual Bill Gal tournament plus a special dinner at Emu Sports Club. The club has been coaching and conducting fencing competitions for four decades and is one of the largest in NSW. It provides training, competition and coaching for both children and adults, from novice through to international competitions. The Penrith Academy of Fencing is run by husband and wife team Eddie and Sally Kopiec, who have been involved with the club for roughly 37 years. Speaking with the Weekender, Mr Kopiec, who is also President of the club, recalled the early beginnings of the Penrith Academy of Fencing. “In 1975, a man by the name of Dr Steve Treloar was the first coach of the club and the person who started it all. He famously

T

Sally and Eddie Kopiec showing off their fencing skills put an ad in one of the Sydney newspapers asking ‘Would you like to be Zorro?’ to prospective participants,” he said. “There were only a handful of members to begin with and then it grew and grew over the years. “Dr Steve later moved on to pursue other interests and my wife and I took over.” Mr Kopiec’s wife Sally is one of Australia’s best and most experienced fencing coaches. In NSW, she is the only female Master of Arms and is also the national

coach of Paralympic and wheelchair fencing. Not only does the Penrith Academy of Fencing cater to able-bodied fencers but wheelchair fencing competitions are held there as well. “As time went on, Sally and I were approached to help wheelchair fencers and, in her national coaching role, she has travelled all around the world with wheelchair fencers including to Europe and Asia,” Mr Kopiec said.

“Our club has grown very quickly over the years, we now have more than 90 members and we hold classes on three days a week.” Last weekend the Penrith Academy of Fencing held its long-running Bill Gal tournament which coincided with the club’s 40th anniversary. Bill Gal was a Hungarian man who immigrated to Australia in the early 1960s and had a strong connection with the Penrith club. “Bill was a superb epee and sabre fencer as well as downhill skier. He died of a heart attack one day after playing a game of squash,” Mr Kopiec said. “To commemorate his life and his ties to Penrith, we hold this competition in his name.” 50 fencers of all ages turned out for this year’s Bill Gal tournament, which included 40 members from the Penrith club alone. Due to his age, Mr Kopiec no longer fences competitively but still enjoys the odd duel from time to time. “I’m now 80-years-old and stopped competing at a state-level about five years ago,” he said. “I can’t beat many people these days because I haven’t got the speed but I’m still as cunning as always.”

You wouldn’t keep your pet like this. But hidden away in sheds across Australia, hens who are just as smart and sensitive as the family pet spend every waking moment in a cage — all for the sake of a cheap egg. She cannot sit comfortably or stretch her wings. Without the ability to exercise, her body is weak. Chances are that she, or one of her cage mates, is living

with an untreated broken bone. But trapped in a cage, in a shed with thousands of cages, no-one is ever likely to notice. Here she will spend 30 long hours to produce just one cage egg. The first time she will see the outside world — the world she was meant to live in — will be on the last day of her life, as she is trucked to the slaughterhouse.

Soward to stay but Panthers admit future was in doubt

Penrith to focus on youth after pulling out of WCL next year

NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith Panthers five-eighth Jamie Soward will be part of the club’s plans in 2016 despite reports that he was being “shopped around” to rival clubs. Last Sunday The Sun Herald reported that the 30-year-old former NSW Origin star had been offered to clubs in the NRL and overseas by the Panthers. Taking to Twitter on Sunday afternoon to clarify the situation, Gould confirmed that he had spoken to Soward about his performances in 2015 as well as his immediate future in the game. “Six weeks ago I had an honest discussion with Jamie. He agreed he struggled in 2015 after several setbacks,” Gould said. “I advised that if he wasn’t 100 per cent motivated to play, I prefer he retire to start a coaching career with the Panthers. “Never at any time did Panthers offer Jamie to other clubs. Jamie may have considered a fresh start somewhere else. “Jamie has since apologised for 2015 and committed to giving 100 per cent for the Panthers next year. That’s all we ask of any player. An in-form Jamie Soward is very important to us. He will do it.” After leaving his former club St George Illawarra in controversial circumstances

RUGBY LEAGUE

Tahlia Tupaea in action for the Panthers WCL Women’s team in 2015. Photo: Noel Rowsell Story continued from » back page Jamie Soward is staying at Penrith midway through the 2013 season, Soward joined the London Broncos in the UK Super League for the remainder of that year before linking up with the Panthers on a four year deal back in 2014. Soward guided the Panthers to an unlikely preliminary finals appearance in his first year at the club but, in stark contrast, was decimated by injury and various personal issues in 2015 which saw him play just 16 games for zero tries. If Soward was to move on from Penrith, it’s understood Matt Moylan would moved into the halves with Dallin Watene-Zelezniak playing fullback.

Penrith’s omission from next year’s competition is expected to have a big impact on a number of their most promising players including young Australian representative Tahlia Tupaea and rising men’s stars Ben Kearins and Nic Pozoglou. Many players who started and honed their young careers at Penrith will now be forced to find other alternatives. “Ben has been given our blessing to move to another Association if he desires. At present his focus is with the Sydney Kings for this season… He is a proud and very respected Penrith junior and we wish him well,” Ms Moore said. “Tahlia will drop down a level and play

Youth League and will look to lessen her burden in the 2016 WNBL off-season, while Nic’s plans are unknown.” With Penrith out of the WCL for at least the 2016 season, focus will now shift to the Association’s Youth League Men’s and Women’s teams as well as their exciting junior program. “It is a common thought throughout NSW that Youth League feature the most exciting games and players due to the athletic ability and passion for the game – Penrith will definitely present that to our members in 2016,” Ms Moore said. “We feel a shift of focus for the future and enhancing the opportunities of and exposing our fantastic Youth and junior members is exciting and positive.”

Playing in a two day match at Howell Oval, Eastern Suburbs batted first scoring 7/378 before declaring after 86 overs. Best with the ball for Penrith was Ryan Smith with 4/90 and Josh Lalor with 3/66. When Penrith hit the crease later that afternoon, they managed to score 0/53 before the day’s play ended. Penrith’s John DiBartolo led the way with the bat with 43 not out. Penrith and Eastern Suburbs will return to the pitch this Saturday morning from 10.30am.

All players must visit the Penrith Basketball website and complete the ‘Trial Registration Form’. Don’t miss out on submitting your details.

NETBALL: Penrith netball sensation Paige Hadley has been named in the Australian Diamonds team for next week’s Constellation Cup against New Zealand. Hadley was one of three NSW Swifts players named in the side that will travel across the Tasman for two Tests on October 20 and October 22. The Diamonds will then return home for two more games against the Silver Ferns in Melbourne and Perth. RACING: After a promising 2015-16 season debut, Penrith’s Darryl Campbell was able to build on that in the best possible way last Saturday night at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway by coming away with a podium finish in the second round of the Ultimate Sprintcar Championship NSW. Campbell, who finished 11th in the season opener feature race at Valvoline Raceway the weekend prior, felt last Saturday night’s result certainly built on his season opening performance. As a result of an impressive start to the season, Campbell currently sits well inside the top 10 of the Ultimate Sprintcar Championship NSW point standings. The next appearance for Campbell and the DC Motorsport team will be this Saturday night back at Valvoline Raceway for the third round of the Ultimate Sprintcar Championship NSW.

asketball in the local area could take a hit next year after the Penrith Basketball Association voted to not enter teams into the 2016 Waratah Championship League (WCL) competition. A decision was made recently by the Penrith Basketball Association, its Board of Directors and Basketball NSW to not be represented in the WCL – a semi professional basketball league in NSW. Speaking with the Weekender, Penrith Basketball Association Manager, Leonie Moore, blamed cost as one of the many factors for the tough decision. “The Association is financially sound, however the costs associated with competing in the Championship Division per team were unrealistic for an amateur sport,” she said. “This along with ever increasing demands for referees, statistics, bench officials, videoing and game announcing led to our decision. “Many Associations continue to run at a substantial loss to compete in this division and Penrith did not feel this warranted for 2016.”
