espite a hostile public gallery on Monday evening, Penrith Councillors remained unwavering in their support for a prayer hall in Kemps Creek, defeating a rescission motion to send the development application back to public exhibition. Hundreds of Penrith residents packed into Council’s Chambers carrying anti-mosque placards to express their discontent that at the last Council meeting, approval had been given to the prayer hall, which will be located on Mamre Road in Kemps Creek. There was heightened security and police presence in the chamber itself to ensure the debate at the Extraordinary Meeting went smoothly. Local resident Anne Brady addressed Council and said that the hall would create traffic problems on Mamre Road. “There are only two main roads in and out of Kemps Creek, being Mamre Road and Elizabeth Drive. Combined with Erskine Business Park, there will be too much traffic congestion,” she said. Fellow resident Ian Sutton also spoke against the prayer hall. “I want Penrith to stay as it is for my children and my grandchildren. I don’t want it turned into an Auburn,” he said. The third and final speaker against the prayer hall was Rick Putra. “It will have a devastating impact on residents and the environment,” he said. Story continues on » p. 8

T
his is the dramatic moment a man was rescued from the wreckage of a horror car accident in South Penrith on Monday. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, where a man was left trapped in his vehicle. Emergency services were called to the intersection between Smith Street and Evan Street, South Penrith at about 2pm on Monday, November 10. There, they found that two cars had collided, leaving the 42-year-old driver of one of the vehicles trapped. Emergency services worked to free the man for some time. He was removed from the vehicle and transported to hospital for a number of injuries. Police are still investigating the incident but are anticipating issuing an infringement notice to one of the drivers. Traffic in the area was disrupted for some time on Monday. We broke the news of this accident on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ westernweekender or follow us on Twitter @wwpenrith.

Parents are always worried about their kids – that’s just natural – but at some point in bringing up your son or daughter, a news story rocks a parent’s very foundations. It will be the first of many such stories that will drive concern and worry, but it’s often the one that hits hardest. It’s the moment you realise that it’s impossible to watch your kids 24 hours a day, seven days a week, particularly once they become teenagers and have influences outside of the family circle they’ve grown up with. For my parents, I reckon it was the death of school girl Anna Wood back in 1995. I was a teenager at the time, and I can remember my parents speaking to me about the dangers of drugs in the days that followed her tragic death, which captivated the nation. Those who can remember the death of the young, bright school girl with the big future must just be shaking their heads after seeing the face that adorned the front pages on Monday. It was that of 19-year-old Georgina Bartter, who died of an apparent ecstasy overdose at the Harbourlife dance festival in Sydney last weekend. 20 years after the death of Anna Wood, what have we really learned? Georgina Bartter’s passing last weekend was not a rare case – drug deaths are sadly common in Australia, and the answer to the above question is that in reality, we’ve learned nothing. The dance party that Georgina attended last week saw 78 other people arrested for drugs offences. There would be some who would say that’s a good result considering the number of people at the event, and to be honest, if a death hadn’t been attached to this story, the 78 arrests would have barely rated a mention by police and the wider media.

TROY DODDS @troydodds
It’s time they got their head out of the sand
Georgina’s parents described the circumstances surrounding their daughter’s death as “extremely out of character”. Most parents would say the same thing about their kids because in truth, most parents have no idea what their 19-year-old son or daughter are really doing on a night out. The only way to get through to teenagers considering experimenting with drugs is to ensure they know the real consequences and the dangers that exist. These days, that would be through social media campaigns and the like. But I think the festivals involved at the centre of tragedies like this really need to take a stronger approach as well. I’m not in any way blaming the festivals themselves or calling for them to be shut down – after all, Georgina Bartter’s death can tragically only be blamed on one person, and that is herself – but they have a responsibility to tackle an issue that is well-known at these type of events. When I took a look at the official website for the Harbourlife festival on Monday, it’s clear that not enough is done to really push the message home about the dangers of drug use. Sure, there’s a warning or two about not bringing in drugs – but it’s mainly talking about criminal convictions and records, rather than the risk of death. Same goes for their Facebook page – the perfect place to get the message out there about the dangers of taking drugs at such events is instead focused on suggestions for which pre-event vodka to consume and advertisements for the festival’s official beer. Organisers of these events know that festivals of this kind have a drug culture. It’s time they got their head out of the sand and started tackling the issue head on, before we have another Georgina Bartter or Anna Wood.

fter announcing just weeks ago that she had quit the Liberal Party, former Howard Minister Jackie Kelly says she is ready to bring her A-game back to local politics and run for the seat of Penrith in the March state election as an independent. Ms Kelly said that she will not focus on every issue, but rather has a select platform based on infrastructure, roads and Badgerys Creek airport. “The next State election is the first opportunity to vote on the airport. The local Penrith community can tell the various developer lobby groups running the Liberal Party that they cannot run roughshod over western Sydney residents in order to keep their inner city mates happy,” she said. “If the State Government was serious about jobs then get on with the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area (10,690ha of employment land), which has been delayed while RMS deals with airport planning. This can create 57,000 new jobs, 21,000 in high value office jobs.” Ms Kelly says that infrastructure is a real concern.

Teacher charged A school teacher from Sydney’s west has been arrested and charged for child grooming offences committed over a social media network. Earlier this month, detectives from the Sex Crimes Squad’s Child Exploitation Internet Unit were made aware of the suspicious activities of a man who was allegedly using a social media platform to engage in sexually explicit conversations with two teenage girls – a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old. Detectives made inquiries into the matter and on Tuesday they attended an independent school in Sydney’s west, where they arrested a 28-year-old male teacher. Police did not name the teacher nor the specific school in question.
Man busted A man has been arrested over more than 10 pawnbroking offences, where it is alleged he tried to pawn a number of stolen items. Police were contacted by a number of local businesses that were concerned about the behaviour of a particular person. At about 1pm on Thursday, November 6, police arrested a 24-year-old man from Mount Riverview on High Street. He was charged with 11 offences, including ‘larceny’ and ‘furnish false information to licensee’. The majority of the offences occurred in mid-October. The man will appear before Penrith Local Court on December 10. – Katherine Tweed

Clinic finally shuts down St Marys has chance to grow after methadone clinic closes @cassandra_o

M
ulgoa MP Tanya Davies and Queen Street business owners could not hide their elation last Friday afternoon when it was officially announced that the St Marys methadone clinic had closed. Mrs Davies said she was absolutely thrilled that the controversial clinic had finally been moved to Mt Druitt hospital campus, opening up unlimited possibilities for the derelict site near St Marys train station. “This is a milestone for St Marys and for the whole community,” Mrs Davies said. “I have always believed that the clinic should have been located on a health campus. When we formed the committee to manage the relocation, we had a patient of the clinic on the committee to ensure patients’ health needs were being met. “The patients now have access to a whole range of services at the health campus.” The other very obvious benefit, Mrs Davies said, is the opportunity for business in St Marys. “This removes a major blockage for businesses... Police snapshot St Clair man hurt after rocks thrown at train at Rooty Hill
Investigations are continuing into an incident that saw a five-year-old boy run over in a local driveway. At about 4.30pm on Saturday, November 8, the boy was in the driveway of a Brisbane Street, Oxley Park townhouse when he was hit by his grandfather’s vehicle. Police were told that the boy had run toward the vehicle, which was towing a trailer, as it approached. As the vehicle entered the driveway, the boy was hit and became caught up in the trailer before he called out. The vehicle stopped and emergency services were called to the scene. The boy was assessed for suspected fractures and internal injuries. It is understood that the boy is on the road to recovery and does not have any serious implications following the frightening incident.
A 42-year-old St Clair man has been injured after a rock was thrown at the train he was driving. At about 1am on Monday, November 10, police received reports that a train driver had been injured after rocks were thrown at the train he was driving from an overpass, smashing the window. The train was stopped at Penrith Railway Station, where the driver was treated by ambulance paramedics and taken to Nepean Hospital. Police investigations have led them to believe that the rocks were thrown from an overpass near Rooty Hill Railway Station. Anyone with information about this incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. People are reminded that throwing any items off an overpass is dangerous and could result in serious consequences.
Glenmore Park: 82-year-old killed in driveway incident
South Penrith: Police looking into pharmacy robbery
An elderly woman has sadly died after she was run over by her own vehicle last weekend. At about 7.10am on Sunday, November 9, emergency services were called to a Glenmore Park home on Boake Close after neighbours had found an elderly woman under a car in a driveway. Police officers believe that the woman was reversing her car out of the driveway when she stopped the car, got out and walked behind it. When emergency services arrived at the scene, she was under the vehicle. The 82-year-old woman died at the scene. A report is being prepared for the Coroner in relation to the incident.
Penrith Police are investigating the break and enter of a local pharmacy and are looking for anyone with information to contact them. ally been approved by the court, Mr Smyth explained. He was met with abuse hurled from the gallery as the evening started to turn ugly. “I am quite within my right to close the public gallery if need be, Cr Fowler interjected. Mr Smyth said that over 50 per cent of the attendees at the prayer hall would come from St Marys and adjoining suburbs. Local solicitor, Kingsley Liu then also spoke in favour of the prayer hall, saying that diversity would make Penrith a better place culturally and for business. Greens candidate for the state seat of Londonderry Shane Gorman then spoke and was also met with great hostility. “I know there are issues in Blacktown and Parramatta, but Penrith is better than that, he said. One audience member yelled as an intended insult, “Gough Whitlam’s son to which Mr Gorman quipped, “I wish I was. Penrith Councillors Marcus Cornish, Maurice Girotto and Kevin Crameri then made their cases for the rescission motion. Cr Tricia Hitchen spoke in favour of the prayer hall and expressed her disappointment at receiving inappropriate messages and emails relating to the issue. “Tonight I am ashamed to be from Penrith, she said, reflecting on the debate. The rescission motion was then defeated seven votes to four. One man attended the meeting dressed to imitate an Arab sheik, and was spoken to by police. What’s your view on the prayer hall? You can ďŹ nd out more about the steps you need to take to make the switch by visiting nbnco.com.au/switch s Penrith residents living in properties built since 2004 are invited to complete a short survey on how energy efďŹ cient their homes are. Researchers at the University of NSW are looking into the effectiveness of the Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) requirements introduced in 2004 and aimed at making new buildings more energy and water efďŹ cient. BASIX requires that all new houses, units and certain renovations to older buildings must meet targets for water and energy efďŹ ciency. The research project aims to assess how the actual energy performance of their buildings measures up against intended energy and greenhouse gas emission savings. Planning for the future The Northern Road set for overhaul as roads funding rolls out

ive intersections along the Northern Road in Penrith have been earmarked for upgrades after the NSW and Federal Governments this week announced $1.1 million of joint funding for planning works. Speaking on Monday morning, Federal Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Jamie Briggs said that he was proud to announce the first round of projects to be funded by the Western Sydney Local Roads Package. “There’s about $30 million being announced today with a share of that going towards the Northern Road in Penrith,” he said. “Works will involve road upgrades such as the installation of traffic lights, roundabouts or additional turning lanes, helping to ease congestion and create local jobs. “This is jobs, this is growth, this is the State and Federal Governments working together to support the growth of this very important part of our economy.” Penrith Council applied for the funding to plan upgrades at various intersections along the road, including at Maxwell Street, Tukara Road, Jamison Road, Derby Street and the Great Western Highway. “This planning funding will ensure
Ross Fowler, Duncan Gay, Andrew Rohan, Fiona Scott and Jamie Briggs on Monday these works are shovel ready for the future rounds of the Local Roads Package,” Mr Briggs said. Fiona Scott, Lindsay MP, said once completed the upgrades would be of great benefit to local commuters. “We have the north and south-west
growth sectors on either side of Penrith and this road is a major connection to the Penrith CBD,” she said. “These upgrades will improve accessibility to Nepean Hospital... and relieve pain points.” The $1.1 million will also be used to

plan upgrades along Erskine Park Road at Explorers Way, Coonawarra Drive, Peppertree Drive and Bennett Road. According to Penrith City Council’s submission, a traffic and road safety route study will be undertaken along a section of The Northern Road, between the M4 Motorway and the Great Western Highway and also along Erskine Park Road. “Both roads are important roads leading into the Badgerys Creek airport site from the north and north east. Preliminary investigations indicate that key intersections along these roads are experiencing crashes and traffic delay issues, particularly at peak travel times,” Penrith Council said. “Increased traffic and trips generated by the proposed Badgerys Creek airport, together with residential growth along the Northern Road corridor and the proximity of the University of Western Sydney campus will impact on intersection efficiency and travel time with potential road safety implications.” Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler welcomed the announcement. “This city is all about creating jobs but what western Sydney has been lacking is infrastructure. This will give us the opportunity to design and plan major upgrades,” he said.
Penrith Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal program has been nationally commended in the category of ‘Building Resilience’ in the National Growth Areas Alliance Awards. Council is proud of the Neighbourhood Renewal team and its commendation. Its success is testimony to the resilience of community members and the willingness of local communities to collaborate in a way that builds connections and meaning and embraces change. Penrith is a booming regional city however the need to establish a sense of community in our neighbourhoods continues to unite residents. It is the residents’ active participation that is vital to the success of developing Neighbourhood Action Plans and implementing projects. The program is never the same in any two neighbourhoods. Each has its own unique flavour and strengths. Council provides the opportunity for meaningful connection, participation and decision-making but at the end it’s an invitation for members of the community to tell their story, set the
agenda and identify priorities in their neighbourhood. Neighbourhood Renewal programs are regularly being conducted across the communities of Penrith. Successful projects have been held at Werrington, St Marys and Colyton, which have won acclaim. Council’s Parks Department and Neighbourhood Renewal team have revitalised community facilities at Kevin Maley Park and Jack Jewry Reserve with more projects planned for the community. An upgrade to the Callisto Reserve playground at Cranebrook was a result of students from Cranebrook High School putting forward a proposal to upgrade the facilities for the local community to use. The students presented their proposal at a Council meeting where funding for the upgrade was endorsed. The leadership and consideration of the young people involved has created a wonderful setting for local families to enjoy. Have a good weekend.

Penrith pauses to remember Strong attendance at Remembrance Day ceremonies in Penrith and St Marys CASSANDRA O’CONNOR

P
eople all over Australia stopped at 11am on Tuesday morning to observe a minute of silence for Remembrance Day. Services were held in both Penrith and St Marys so that residents could reflect on the contributions made by so many from this area to Australia’s war efforts. A number of wreaths were laid at war memorials in Memory Park and at St Marys RSL and around the city hundreds of people wore poppy flowers and brooches in respect of the fallen. Penrith RSL organised the service at Memory Park, which attracted a large crowd. Afterwards, refreshments were served at the Penrith RSL Club’s Hornseywood Room for invited guests, Service and Ex-Service personnel, sub-Branch and Woman’s Auxiliary members and partners. Prime Minister Tony Abbott delivered a Remembrance Day message to Australia; a timely reminder of the sacrifices our troops make given Australian forces this week moved into various locations in Iraq to fight the Islamic State. “This Remembrance Day marks 96 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the
Penrith’s Remembrance Day ceremony. Photos: Melinda Jane Great War. The Great War was the crucible in which our nation’s identity was forged. From a population of under five million; 417,000 enlisted, 332,000 served overseas, 152,000 were wounded and 61,000 never came home, Mr Abbott said. “It was sacrifice on a stupendous scale.
After the Armistice, we vowed never to forget and today, we renew that vow. We pause to remember the suffering and loss that has occurred in all wars, for we are a country of memory, as well as memorials. Check out our full Remembrance Day photo gallery on Facebook.

car park and two local parks in St Marys could be rezoned for development purposes after Penrith Councillors on Monday evening voted to send the rezoning plans to the Department of Planning. Penrith Council owns several strategic sites in the St Marys CBD including Station Street car park, as well as recreational spaces Kokoda Park and Lang Park. A report to Council supported the rezoning of these spaces from community to commercial land.
“The St Marys Town Centre Strategy recognises the importance of the contribution that the existing shopping centres (Station Plaza and St Marys Village) make to the viability of the Town Centre both now and potentially into the future,” the report said. “It recommends that they are integrated with Queen Street, recognising that this requires the use of public land, specifically those areas between the existing shopping centres and Queen Street.” To have the land reclassified, Penrith Council must go through the Department of Planning, who will conduct public consultation on the matter.
esidents from Orchard Hills and surrounding suburbs gathered at St Marys community centre on Tuesday evening to voice concerns about the route of the future M9 motorway and other local infrastructure projects. Local politicians and candidates were invited to the meeting to share their views on the M9 motorway, Badgerys Creek airport and the rail extension of the South West line to St Marys. Those in attendance included Prue Car, Labor candidate for Londonderry; Todd Carney, Labor candidate for Mulgoa; Jackie Kelly, independent for Penrith; and Bernard Bratusa, Liberal candidate for Londonderry. Local resident Lauren Taylor said the meeting was a good opportunity to hear what the politicians thought. “Of those who turned up it was good to hear what their opinions were given that we have the State election coming up,” she said. “I was a bit disappointed that Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies and Fiona Scott, the Lindsay MP didn’t turn up despite making a commitment to do so.” She said the residents are very passionate about the infrastructure projects.
Prue Car speaks at the meeting “We are not anti infrastructure or anti jobs but we do want more information,” she said. “Ever since Badgerys Creek airport was announced, all these projects have popped up and are being treated individually but they will have a cumulative impact on our community.” Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies was unable to attend the meeting because she was attending parliament. “The NSW Government’s Transport for NSW is coordinating the corridor preservation projects. Public consultations are part of the planning process,” Mr Davies said.

he discovery of an unroadworthy trailer, being towed through Orchard Hills, has been described by police as a “wake up call” for motorists. Traffic and Highway Patrol officers from Penrith were conducting random breath tests on the Northern Road at Orchard Hills at about 10am on Saturday, November 8, when a truck towing a dog trailer was pulled in for a breath test. The driver was breath tested and returned a negative result however, when police inspected the vehicle and trailer, there were faults. Following the initial inspection by police and Roads and Maritime Services, the truck, trailer and driver were escorted to the Roads and Maritime Services Safety Station at Penrith for further inspections. It was found that there were cracks in the welding of the trailer’s chassis and the brake booster push rod was not connected to the brakes of the dog trailer. The driver was issued with two defect notices for these issues and an additional four infringement notices for light and auxiliary issues. “With significant amounts of truck and dog trailer movements currently throughout NSW, and more expected in the future, this is a wake up call for
Some of the damage to the truck the industry,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith. Roads and Maritime Services General Manager Compliance Operations, Paul Endycott said that while most people follow the rules, not enough pay attention to maintaining their vehicles and trailers. “This intercept by police conducting routine random breath testing, coupled with the expertise of the Roads and Maritime Service Heavy Vehicle Inspectors, has effectively prevented this truck and dog trailer combination being involved in either a serious injury or even a fatal crash,” he said.

efore you pay that speeding fine that you received from a government body via email, consider double-checking that it is legitimate as recent events suggest that if you don’t, you may be putting your money into the hands of scammers. Police are warning NSW residents to be particularly vigilant when they receive fines to their email accounts after a number of people recently received scam emails encouraging them to pay fines to the NSW Office of State Revenue. The scam emails are believed to be the work of criminals in Europe. “While the emails being sent appear legitimate, they are in fact completely fake, said Commander of the Fraud and Cybercrime Squad, Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis. “Neither the Office of State Revenue nor the State Debt Recovery Office (SDRO) issue fines or penalty notices via email in
the first instance. If you receive a notice via email, be sure to make a number of enquiries before responding to the email or paying the fine. Police recommend that people who receive one of these fines should visit the SDRO website, which is www.sdro.nsw. gov.au, to check the validity of their fine or call the SDRO directly on 1300 655 805. “In addition to ensuring you triple check the validity of the email, if you find that the email is a scam, please make sure you report it to the relevant authorities – Police, Fair Trading and the Australian Government’s SCAMwatch website, Detective Superintendent Katsogiannis said. “Not only do we want to warn people about these scams, we want to do everything we can to make sure the perpetrators are brought to justice. Anyone with information about scams should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, NSW Fair Trading on 13 32 20 and SCAMwatch at www.scamwatch. gov.au.

rotesters took to Mulgoa Road on Saturday to voice their concerns over Badgerys Creek Airport. The protest was staged to coincide with a Liberal Party conference being held at Penrith Panthers. No Badgerys Creek Airport Inc President, Joanne Crosthwaite, said that the protest had plenty of support from motorists. “We had half our organisation protesting at Penrith Panthers and the other half were collecting signatures at Glenbrook, she said.
“There were many, many drivers who showed their support for us on Mulgoa Road by waving and honking. “We wanted to raise awareness particularly given the Liberal Party was meeting in Penrith for a conference. We wanted to let them know we don’t support their airport and that they haven’t consulted us at all. Ms Crosthwaite said that many Penrith residents remain unaware of the issues surrounding the airport. “There’s been no consultation and no information on the airport. As far as we know it will be a 24 hour airport. There’s also environmental issues, she said.

atrina Keshishian was traumatised as a young 20-year-old after being gang raped, but has courageously put her story in the spotlight so that other rape victims might receive the justice they deserve. In 2008, Ms Keshishian was enjoying a night out with her family at St Marys Leagues Club. “I met a guy there and he offered to take me to a local club. I got in his car and I am a bit of a tom boy, so when his friends got in also it didn’t really bother me that much, I never thought anything would occur,” she told the Weekender. “They took me to the river and it started to feel a little uncomfortable, so I thought I needed to give the guy what he wanted. We left the group and had sex. It was consensual. “When we finished I opened my eyes and the two friends were standing behind
him and he turned around and said, ‘sharing’s caring boys, get down here’.” She was then pinned as the men took turns raping her and was then dumped at a service station near the club. “The service attendant saw how filthy I was and how upset I was so she called the police,” Ms Keshishian recalled. “The police took me to Nepean Hospital but I had to wait for six to eight hours for a specialist doctor to take samples of the DNA. It was awful.” Mentally broken, Ms Keshishian did not have the strength to testify in court and so the charges against the men were dropped. The then 20-year-old applied for victims’ compensation but it was not until this year that it was finally approved, and substantially less than what she had been expecting. “I filled out the compensation form in 2008 and forgot to tick one box. It had to be sent back and resubmitted and by that time it was 2009,” she said.

“I was just broken and so my mum took over the claim for me and every time we called it was, ‘we’re waiting on paperwork’. It wasn’t until 2011 that I was interviewed by a clinical psychologist about the incident for the claim. “In her report she said that I definitely qualified for compensation but again, I was left waiting.” It wasn’t until this year that Ms Keshishian received a letter saying her claim had been approved. “The letter said that my compensation had been approved but that retrospective legislation had passed parliament in 2013 so that the maximum compensation had been reduced from $50,000 to $15,000,” she said. “At first I thought, ‘at least I am getting something’, but then I kept thinking about how unfair it was.” Psychological treatment can cost into the thousands of dollars. “I decided to start a petition through Change.org and there’s now more than
118,000 signatures,” Ms Keshishian said. “I’m no longer doing this for myself but for all the other victims out there who have now contacted me about how their compensation was cut too. “I’ve read their stories and some make me cry, other just make me plain angry.” On Wednesday, the Penrith local delivered a petition to Attorney General Brad Hazzard signed by over 118,000 people to have victims’ compensation for violent crimes increased. Showing incredible strength and determination, Ms Keshishian says that once she has had the legislation changes reversed, she wants to reach out and help other rape victims. “I want to start a centre for rape victims, where there can be counselling, group sessions, therapeutic activities like art... there’s just no help for victims currently,” she said. Visit Change.org to sign the petition or visit Ms Keshishian’s Facebook page ‘Katrina Keshishian’.

They appear oblivious to the fact that our brave young men risk their lives daily fighting against Muslim terrorists in the middle east. It has been proven that young Australian born and educated Muslims have gone to fight alongside the terrorists against our troops. Why would a sane human being not oppose the construction of facilities where this could happen. To their shame Labor Councillors Prue Car and Karen McKeown, Independent Jackie Greenow, Liberals Bernard Bratusa, Ben Goldfinch, Tricia Hitchen and Mayor Ross Fowler voted in favour of the mosques. Liberal Councillors Marcus Cornish and Jim Aitken plus independents Kevin Crameri and Maurice Girotto voted against
I am writing to voice my concerns over the attempt by Councillor Cornish to overturn a complying application for the proposed Prayer Hall in Kemps Creek last week. Councillor Cornish has a history of campaigning purely on divisive policies as reaffirmed with his stance against the Muslim religion. He has called for the overturning of the recent approval for this prayer hall in Kemps Creek on the basis of there was insufficient local discussion regarding this, then distributes a letter where he signs off stating his ongoing opposition to ANY place of Muslim worship in the Penrith Council area. His stance against a religion and by association a group of people in our community is offensive to the majority and one in which I find repugnant. Councillor Cornish is not a representative of our greater community and should quietly remove himself and his bigoted views from our Council. JAMES HILL, VIA EMAIL

construction of any mosques. Those Councillors who voted for the mosque did so because the Land and Environment Court would rubber stamp the applications. This is where the problem lies. This department does not have any feeling for the people as they know best. There were in excess of two hundred people attending the special Council meeting last night (Monday) and were at times very passionate and vocal. Our State and Federal political representatives were absent from the meeting which may speak volumes for their own personal views of mosques in Penrith. PETER TOWNSEND, SOUTH PENRITH
Asbestos risk During Asbestos Awareness Month my fellow ambassadors Cherie Barber, Don Burke, Scott Cam, Barry Du Bois, Scott McGregor and I speak with one voice to all Australians about the dangers of asbestos to homeowners, renovators, tradies and handymen hoping they’ll hear our potentially life-saving message. For those who think

asbestos-related diseases are a thing of the past, think again. There is no safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres and if breathed in, it can have the potential to cause mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that can take 20 to 50 years to develop. There is no cure and people have a very short life expectancy – just 10 to 12 months after diagnosis. I lost a good mate Harold Hopkins to mesothelioma because he breathed in asbestos fibres when he was a young bloke on building sites so I know first-hand how dangerous asbestos can be. Asbestos can be found in at least 1 in 3 Australian homes and it doesn’t matter what kind of home you live in – brick, weatherboard, clad or fibro – so if it was built or renovated before 1987, it will most likely contain asbestos. Australians need to think smart, think safe and get to kNOw asbestos this NOvember by visiting asbestosawareness.com. au because it’s not worth the risk! The true measure of a pollie is how they handle themselves when they no longer hold public office. A comparison with her successor David Bradbury is very revealing. David has handled himself with dignity and been able to secure employment and hold a position of responsibility with an international agency charged with economic and monetary policy making and implementation. Jackie on the other hand does not seem to have done so well and is relegated to trying to get back into public office. JUSTIN TAUNTON, VIA FACEBOOK

Penrith City Council is calling for expressions of interest from sporting clubs and associations who wish to establish a presence in Mulgoa Rise, Glenmore Park. Mulgoa Rise is part of the Stage 2 development of Glenmore Park that is home to 1,624 new dwellings and an estimated population of 4,600 people. The multipurpose fields will be the first new sporting fields in over 15 years in the Penrith area. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said the new multipurpose fields have the capacity to cater for a wide range of sports. “The new multipurpose fields have been developed to provide a range of playing fields and associated infrastructure,” Cr Fowler said. “Council supports the growth of sport and recreation in Penrith and these new fields will provide opportunities for sports to gain new members from across the community. No one sport or organisation has been identified as the end user group for these fields. Council has designed these fields to be accommodating to a wide range of users.” The multipurpose fields at Mulgoa Rise are being developed in two stages. Stage one construction has commenced and it is anticipated that the grass coverage on the fields will be suitably established for activity in
the winter season in 2015. Stage two includes the construction of an amenity building that will be available for the 2015/2016 summer season and the fields open for full use in the 2016 winter season. Council will be holding an information session to provide options for field configurations for different sports. The meeting will be held at 5pm on Monday, November 24, in the Passadena Room at the Civic Centre. Sporting clubs and associations need to register their interest for this meeting by calling 4732 8092. Penrith Council has received a development application for new apartments in Kingswood. The application is for 206 Great Western Highway, and would see the existing structure bulldozed and replaced with new ground floor commercial space, and eight storeys of apartments (50 in total). A new warehouse and distribution centre could be built in North St Marys. A development application has been received for the $7.2 million project, to be located at 31-53 Kurrajong Road, North St Marys. The next Council meeting will be on November 24 at 7.30pm.

22 CBD location for new TAFE Service Centre

AFE Western Sydney students are about to experience customer service like never before, when the institute introduces a streamlined service next week. On Monday, November 17, TAFE Western Sydney is launching a new Customer Service Centre located right in Penrith’s CBD, which is set to make information and enrolment processes for current and future students more accessible. The centre, which is a first for TAFE NSW and will link students with 10 different TAFE campuses in western Sydney as well as its online training network OTEN, comes in response to student and community feedback and will act as a pilot from now until February next year. If the service is successful, it will become permanent. TAFE Western Sydney Director, Strategic Marketing and Media, Craig McCallum said it was great to be able to offer such a personalised service in a key location in Penrith. “What we will offer here is personalised support from point of enquiry right through to enrolment, how, when and where our customers want it,” Mr McCallum said.
“As the student progresses through their learning journey with us, the Service Centre and our Customer Support Officers at our colleges will provide ongoing support to the student to ensure they achieve their learning objectives.” The centre will offer information on courses, apprenticeships, government subsidies and payment options as well as offer assistance for those looking for workforce training programs, enrolment services, careers advice and help with applying for VET-FEE HELP or FEE-HELP Loans. “Further study is one of the most important decisions of a person’s life as it links directly to careers. We want to make sure we can support prospective and current students throughout this major life decision,” Mr McCallum said. “Anyone who would like to find out how TAFE Western Sydney can help them get the skills to start, boost or redirect their career is welcome to contact us for a chat.” The centre will be staffed by people who are fully trained and have the most up-todate information and skills. It will be located at 117 Henry Street, Penrith and will be open between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday and on Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm. For more information about the new service, call 131 870.

Locals flip out over pinball From an era time forgot: Thousands expected to attend Pinball Expo this weekend NATHAN TAYLOR

Pinball wizards live it up each year at the Chicago Pinball Expo
local news
F
or the past few months, pinball enthusiasts from around Australia have been busy practicing their flipper moves in preparation for the nation’s biggest ever Pinball Expo happening right here in Penrith this weekend. The Australian Pinball Expo, which gets underway today and runs until Sunday at Penrith Panthers Exhibition Marquee, is expected to attract thousands of enthusiasts from all over Australia. Pinballers will be able to view and play 180 pinball machines representing every era since the 1940s with classic arcades, ‘lock-in’ nights and pinball trade stands also featuring. The Expo commences tonight, Friday, November 14 with a lock-in event from 7pm to 4am where pinball wizards will compete in the Australian Pinball Expo Championships. The tournament is IFPA (International Flipper Pinball Association) endorsed with points qualifying for the World Pinball Player Rankings. Expo co-organiser and IFPA Country Director Daniel Robar said most of the highly ranked players will be there this weekend with many from interstate and New Zealand.
“We are expecting a very high standard of play. For the past three years, we’ve had the two highest ranking Australian players compete in the IFPA World Championships, which this year were held in Denver, Colorado,” Mr Robar said. “Pinball is experiencing a big surge in popularity around the world but especially in Australia where these visually spectacular and hugely entertaining machines are replacing pokies in more and more pubs and clubs.” The Expo will display the colourful history of pinball with games from every era, many sought-after by collectors for their incredible artwork indicative of popular culture at the time. Well known games include James Bond 007 and the Amazing Spider-Man from the 80s, Dr Who, Indiana Jones and The Addams Family from the 90s, and more recently AC/DC, Metallica and X-Men. The Australian Pinball Expo is on this weekend at the Penrith Panthers Exhibition Marquee from 9am to 5pm. General admission passes cost $30 and family passes cost $75. Entry to the ‘lock-in’ events happening tonight and Saturday night from 7pm to 4am is by purchasing a $165 Access Pass only. For more information visit www. pinballexpo.com.au.

enrith’s dragon boat club, the Pendragons, have cemented their commitment to improving the lifestyles of local people after dedicating a ‘live well’ Cadbury Fundraiser Community Grant to training. The club are going to be purchasing new training paddles, which in the long run will help improve the health of local people and are hoped to help grow the profile of dragon boating in western Sydney. Their current training paddles, used on ‘Come and Try Days’, where local people are invited to try dragon boating at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, are in poor conditions and the grant will allow the club to purchase 15 new paddles. “Dragon boating is an activity that encourages good health and wellbeing through exercise, has a cultural background, and is a great way to meet new people. We look forward to making our new training paddles available to the community on Come and Try Days,” said Pendragons Head Coach, Ray Debono. The Pendragons cater for paddlers aged between 12 and 70, with some of their current members having represented Australia at the International Dragon

amre House is about to begin a new chapter in its long history, under the umbrella of CatholicCare Social Services. Built in the 1820’s as a farming homestead, Mamre House has been a longstanding part of the local community’s history and more recently, has been a charity run by the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta. Mamre the charity began nearly 30 years ago, which saw the house and land transformed by the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta and the Sisters of Mercy into a place that offered training and support for disadvantaged people from across western Sydney. While keeping its name, Mamre is now being integrated into CatholicCare Social Services; the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta’s governing body that oversees all of the Church’s social services. It will house a range of different CatholicCare services that are set to benefit the people of St Marys, Penrith and other western Sydney communities. “Recent social and political changes have meant that smaller organisations can struggle to keep afloat and so the board of Mamre Plains Ltd and the Sisters
Sister Mary-Louise Petro of Mercy have decided to integrate with a bigger organisation to ensure Mamre’s future,” said Sister Mary-Louise Petro of the Sisters of Mercy, Parramatta. “We have determined that CatholicCare Social Services Parramatta is closely aligned with the values of Mamre and are now proud to announce that talks have reached a positive conclusion.” Sister Mary-Louise said that she is confident Mamre House will continue to be an important part of the community. “Mamre plays such an important role in the lives of the poor and disadvantaged in western Sydney and it’s essential that its survival is assured,” she said.

fter years without a home, Penrith Baptist Church is finally ready to officially open its new church building and is inviting the community to join in the celebration. Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23, will mark the official opening of the Morello Terrace, Caddens building and the event is expected to be huge. The church is hosting a free open day and festival on the Saturday, with a jumping castle, face painting and activities from 1pm, followed by a sausage sizzle and
a bush dance concluding the day at 9pm. On Sunday, the church will be holding a special service of celebration and thanksgiving from 10am. “Our previous building was located next to the Nepean Hospital precinct although, having established there in 1960, we were there before the hospital. We felt the need to move, it was almost as though we were being squeezed out by the hospital precinct,” said Penrith Baptist Church Minister, Neil Checkley. “This new building is not just for the people who attend our church, it is for the wider community.” Visit www.penrithbaptist.org.

Artists branch into new territory to create collaborative work for festival

Plan ahead with someone you can trust. Fiona Boulous Funeral Director
Sophie Temhoff and Lauren Grabara in a still from Lauren’s work ‘Personal Tree’, which forms part of a TAFE Western Sydney project Having their work displayed to the public is a dream for many budding artists but for a number of local TAFE Western Sydney students, this dream has become reality. 12 Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts students from the Nepean Arts and Design Centre, in collaboration with Penrith City Council and multi-media artist, Peta Khan, created video works that have been compiled to create a work that is to be included in the OnIslands Eramboo Collaborative Arts Festival this month. “Creating works for video was a new experience for the Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts students, but one which was embraced enthusiastically,” said Jo Newton, Photo/Digital Imaging Teacher at TAFE Western Sydney. Students had to create their video works to reflect the theme ‘Urban Heat Island Effect’, with each interpreting the idea differently.
Ms Newton said that the topic “strikes close to home” for many of the students, who live in western Sydney and used their own experiences to interpret the theme. For some, their work considered the high temperatures experienced by western Sydney residents as opposed to those living in coastal areas and for others, their work was about the growth of their areas and its impact on the environment. “The resulting work is a compilation of pieces, which range from local actions and interventions, to personal articulations and reflections, to pieces which engage with a larger environmental focus, showing concern with climate change, urbanisation and deforestation in general,” Ms Newton said. “The tree is a key symbol in many of these works, as negative associations with trees contributes to the problem.” The Festival will be held between November 15 and 30.

With 22 years in the business, it comes as no surprise that the Academy’s care is of the highest quality, and it is fitting that the team at Jordan Springs are working out of an impressive centre to match. This centre is going to be open to parents and their kids on Saturday, November 22, who are invited to visit, have a look around and participate in some family fun. “We’re really looking forward to sharing our brand new centre with the families of the local area. There will be a jumping castle, sausage sizzle and face painting for the kids. Parents will have the chance to ask questions of our wonderful staff and learn what we’re all about,” said Director, Brooke Beddall. The privately owned and family operated business is dedicated to providing care of an exceptional quality, employing only the best educators. “We pride ourselves on ensuring quality care – providing children with the tools they need to create the best start in life. This is indicated with the various industry awards and local business awards which have been awarded to us,” Operator, Maged Zaki said. “We only employ the best educators who are dedicated to providing a stimulating and exciting program for our children, supported by their caring and nurturing nature and great team like attitude.”

How do you define success?
How video marketing can help your business
Success is an interesting idea to ponder. Each of us are likely to have different priorities and definitions of what success is. Even though the aim of any business is to generate income (otherwise it is essentially a non-profit organisation), how much profit, and what we do with that profit, is where the definitions start to vary greatly. One dictionary definition I found starts with a general statement: “The accomplishment of an aim or purpose”, and one of the sub-definitions is “The attainment of fame, wealth or social status”. Personally, I think this is a very narrow view of success, because it focuses on the external results– which become quite subjective. I much prefer this definition of success: “the fact of achieving something good that you have been trying to do”. I think this allows for a much broader spectrum of experiences that I know many female business owners would measure themselves against. For example, part of the ‘success’ of my business (in my opinion!) is that I have been able to earn an income while also being involved in the day to
day of my children’s lives. I have created a flexible working environment that helps me to achieve that ‘balance’ between work and family. I am certain, though, as female business owners that many of you will have come across other standards of success by which your business is measured by others. ‘Success’ for you may mean working part time even though working more hours might result in more profit. ‘Success’ might be achieved when you are in a position to donate and give away large amounts of money. Whatever your definition, don’t let other people’s narrow definitions discourage you to continue to strive for your own idea of success.
The environment in which we market our businesses is getting more and more competitive by the day. We are constantly searching for points of difference and new ways to entertain and capture audiences online. People say a picture tells a thousand words. Well how many words does a video tell? A third of all online activity is spent watching videos. You only have to look at usage statistics of YouTube to work out how popular the use of both short clips and long videos are. Just over 13.1 million Australians visited YouTube in October which is around half our population. It is the number two search engine in the world. Videos are becoming a major trend in marketing and a fair few of my clients are using it now. The cost is good value given that videos done right can last for a long time as a promotional method for your business. The key is to give your prospective customers small chunks of your brand in a creative, engaging way, and you will stand a better chance of being remembered. It brings out your imagination.
Employee interviews, quick facts about your company and glimpses at your production process are all examples of how these tools can be used. Here are some advantages of using video marketing for your business: • Video helps convey complex information more clearly • People don’t buy a product, service or idea. They buy the story that is attached to it. • It’s Versatile. A video which has been produced for your website can be used elsewhere. The cost can be leveraged by using the video as a general sales tool. • Helps businesses in communicating their important points to their target audience in very little time. • Videos are given much higher search engine priority than pictures, text and audio files thus giving you a much better chance to pass on your marketing message. • Videos you create will last for years and will get you more exposure with time whereas other forms of marketing have a much shorter shelf life.

Hyundai has launched its most significant, sophisticated and technologically advanced car yet – the acclaimed Genesis sedan. Genesis is Hyundai’s high-tech global flagship and easily the most advanced and luxurious car ever to wear a Hyundai badge. It delivers ground-breaking levels of refinement and astonishing value for money, and embodies Hyundai’s flourishing reputation as a global automotive pacesetter. Importantly, for Australia the handsome and prestigious Genesis has been specified and locally tuned to match the world’s big-name prestige and luxury car brands for a fraction of their prices. In terms of cabin space and luxury, Genesis matches or exceeds the prestige and luxury car establishment against which it was benchmarked. As well as a five star ANCAP rating, Genesis was recently awarded the highest ANCAP score ever achieved in local crash testing. Thanks to the exhaustive attentions of Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s Product Planning and Engineering team, the rear-wheel-drive Genesis was further refined to deliver uniquely Australianfocused driveability. The arrival of the important new Genesis emphatically ushers in a new era in Australia’s prestige and luxury car landscape.

James Magnussen helps launch TRYathlon event at Penrith’s Regatta Centre NATHAN TAYLOR
@natetaylor87
T
he Sydney International Regatta Centre is already the home of triathlons in NSW and now the venue is set to welcome another one with the announcement that the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will take place there early next year. Australian Olympic swimmer James Magnussen and NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres delivered the exciting news last Friday morning to a huge crowd of kids at Samuel Terry Public School in Cranebrook. Next year Sanitarium, with the support of the NSW Government, will expand its Kids TRYathlon Series to four events in NSW and 13 across Australia. This will include the Penrith leg which will take place at the Penrith Lakes venue on Sunday, January 25. “Now in its 17th year, the Kids TRYathlon aligns with Sport and Recreation’s mission to encourage more Aussie kids to get healthy and active while building confidence to ‘give it a try’ in a fun and rewarding environment,” Mr Ayres said.

Weet-Bix Kids TRY gold medal and a certificate. Speaking with the Weekender, current 100m freestyle world champion and WeetBix Kids Try Hero, James Magnussen, said he was proud to be involved with the event and hoped local kids would be excited to take part too. “Kids playing sport is a necessity in this day and age and I’m happy to align myself with this cause,” he said. “The distances aren’t too long, so there doesn’t need to be too much training beforehand. I’d recommend kids go for a swim at a local pool, ride a pushbike around the street and go for a jog – nothing too serious to get ready.” The Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will be split into two age categories. The first triathlon will be open to seven to 10-year-olds and comprise of a 100m swim, 3km cycle and 500m run while the second triathlon will be open to 11 to 15-year-olds and comprise of a 200m swim, 6km cycle and 1km run. Early-bird registrations close on November 23 while official registrations end on January 11, 2015. For more information visit www.try.weetbix.com.au.

t Clair basketballer Kelli Sims has swapped the Blue Mountains for the Rocky Mountains, becoming the latest in a long line of young Aussies searching for their hoop dreams in the United States. The 19-year-old centre, who was a key member for Penrith’s Waratah Championship League team last season, arrived in the Mile-High City of Denver back in August to begin her four-year campaign at Metropolitan State University. Speaking with the Weekender from her home in the States, Sims described her new surrounds as “gorgeous”, relishing being right in the thick of the city’s sporting culture. “I live about five to 10 minutes away from the city, which is pretty convenient,” she said. “The Denver Nuggets’ (NBA team) home court is right next to campus and the Colorado Rockies (MLB team) and Denver Broncos (NFL team) stadiums are only a few minutes away too. It’ll be good to catch a few games.” Sims’ dream to travel to the US and play college basketball had been a number of years in the making with things only starting to get serious during a visit to the school back in June. “I’ve wanted to play college ball for a few years now and I’ve been in the whole process of working towards that for the past two years,” Sims said.
Kelli Sims (centre) with her new teammates in Denver. Photo: Andy Schlichting “My coach at the NSW Institute of Sport, Damian Cotter, introduced me to Metro and got me talking with their coaches. I then sent them some game footage and visited the school in June. I signed my contract two weeks later.” However, after getting settled into her new surrounds over the past two months including adjusting to Denver’s high altitude situation, Sims was informed last week that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) had ‘redshirted’ (suspended) her from playing in the 2014/15 college season sighting issues with her academics. Sims will now be forced to sit out the current season and will instead concentrate on her linguistics studies whilst watching her new teammates from the sidelines.

Jolly Dryden ($5.10) driven by Kevin Pizzuto won the start from gate two and maintained the advantage throughout the first race. Wunder Ranger had the sit behind him to gain the second spot while Simply Gorgeous came from last to run third. Favourite Toptenshootout ($1.60) driven by David Morris won the way short priced favourites should in race two. He also led from the start beating Sunnivue Caesar.

ocal football clubs were rewarded for their success over the past season at the Annual Nepean Football Association (NFA) Awards, held recently at Penrith Paceway. Clubs gathered in the Members Lounge Function Room to receive well-deserved accolades and to celebrate the accomplishments of their teams, clubs and association. One of the big winners on the night included the St Clair United Soccer Club who won the Excellence in Club Administration Award. The club received $1,000 in prize money for their efforts across the 2014 season. “It was wonderful to be able to recognise a club who has made such a concerted effort to strive for excellence on so many levels to ensure they deliver a quality product to their members,” NFA Operations Manager, Linda Cerone said. “Previous winners of this award, Blue Mountains FC and Cranebrook United SC, continue to deliver a quality football environment to members.
St Clair United Soccer Club win NFA’s Excellence in Club Administration Award “The award is now becoming one that clubs are striving to claim.” Also winning big on the night was Graham Chapman who won the Distin-
guished Service Award for his work in assisting the Association with the establishment and successful rollout of the new Nepean Referees Group.
Retiring NFA President John Churchward said Mr Chapman’s leadership of the Nepean Referees Group was integral in its success despite “negative efforts” from areas of the local football community to discredit them. In the end, clubs from the Hawkesbury District scooped the pool in the 2014 club awards with Pitt Town and District Sports Soccer Club winning the Referees Trophy for Best and Fairest Club while the Horley Trophy for Junior Club Championship and the Bill Morris Shield were both won by Richmond Ex-Servicemens Soccer Club. Also acknowledged on the night was this year’s Football NSW State Award winner for his services to football, Gordon Aiken of the Blue Mountains Football Club. Aiken’s distinguished service to football in the Nepean District has spanned more than 25 years and has included service to both club and association. In total 23 of the 32 NFA clubs were awarded plaques to commemorate the success of their teams during the 2014 season. Have you got a sports story to share? CRICKET: Penrith are in a vulnerable position heading into the second day of their match against Northern District at Mark Taylor Oval. Playing without a number of their big stars in Josh Lalor, Pat Jackson and Luke Morrissey, Penrith batted first scoring a somewhat disappointing total of 210. Penrith batsman John DiBartolo was the best of a rather bad bunch with 53 runs. When Northern District hit the crease later in the day they managed a solid 0/48 before stumps. The match will resume this Saturday at 10.30am.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers have enjoyed a win and washout over their past two games in the NSW State Baseball League season. In their mid-week Round 7 clash against the Canterbury Vikings, their game was called off due to severe storms that lashed Sydney. However, the sun was shining last Sunday when the Panthers overcame Manly 9-7 in the opening game of Round 8. Penrith have once again climbed back to the top of the ladder and will play Central Coast in Round 9 this weekend.
GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks are once again back to their losing ways going down to the North Western Predators in a high scoring game 58-34. The Ducks will seek their second win of the season when they take on the Sydney University Lions at 3pm this Saturday. The Nepean Ducks currently remain equal last on the Gridiron NSW ladder.
FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers were crushed 3-0 at the hands of Melbourne Victory last weekend in the W-League. Despite having plenty of chances throughout the match, the Wander Women just couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net no matter how hard they tried. The Wanderers have fallen to last place on the W-League ladder and will play Perth Glory this Saturday. Meanwhile, the Wanderers Y-League side are continuing to improve after they hammered Melbourne Victory 3-0 last weekend. They’ll play Perth Glory this Sunday.
BASKETBALL: Congratulations to the Penrith Basketball Association who last Saturday night picked up the Basketball NSW Award for ‘Greatest Increase in Registration Numbers in 2014’. The local Association had more than a 100 per cent increase on 2013 registration numbers and were presented the award during Basketball NSW’s Annual Awards dinner. “This award comes from hard work, commitment and passion from our fantastic staff and dedicated junior club committees and members who support our Association year in, year out,” Penrith Basketball Association said in a statement.

Ante Covic is the goal keeper for the Western Sydney Wanderers and answers five big questions every Friday in the Western Weekender
Disappointing way to lose last Friday night after being crowned Champions of Asia a few days earlier. Coach Tony Popovic blamed the 1-0 loss on fatigue and some new combinations – would you agree? We knew it would be a tricky game. We’ve had a whirlwind couple of weeks with a lot of travelling behind us and we have to balance these next few weeks as best as we can. Only three of us started from the Al-Hilal game and we had four players who had never played 90 minutes before or started a game for months. We knew it would be hard but I think we took away a lot of positives. We controlled the game in parts and I think everyone could see we fatigued in the end. How did you personally feel out there after so much travel? I think everyone felt fatigued, that even included our staff. For myself, I know during the day I felt flat and weary. There was an eight hour time difference we had to get over in only a few days. I don’t think anyone was 100 per cent fresh under

Another long road trip to Perth this Saturday to take on the first-placed Glory, how have you seen their start to the season? If you’ve won four games and lost one like Perth, you’ve got to be happy with your form. They’ve been scoring goals and they definitely recruited well in the offseason. The Glory are a team who will be very difficult and it’s never easy jumping on a plane and flying all the way to Perth to try and get something out of it. They’re going to be full of confidence and it’ll certainly be a tricky game as we continue to adjust to our schedule. You’ll be up against ex-teammate Youssouf Hersi for the first time, do you think there’ll be some feeling there or he’ll be out to prove something? Youssouf, on his day, is a fantastic player. We saw that for two seasons at the Wanderers where he can create something

out of nothing. I know he has a lot of respect for the players and club but he’s playing for Perth now and he’s going to do everything he can for them. We’re going to have to contain him like we will a lot of their players. I don’t think you can start bringing emotion into these kinds of situations. They’re Perth, we’re the Wanderers and once you go out on that field there’s no love lost between anyone. Lastly, congratulations on making the 2014 AFC Champions League Dream Team along with fellow teammates Shannon Cole, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Tomi Juric – that must feel like the icing on the cake? The whole AFC Champions League has been a dream run. Every player in that squad has played their part in getting us there. Recognition that we have four players in the Dream Team is fantastic and they all deserve it. A couple of other players wouldn’t be out of place in that team either. Credit to the guys who got in but we also know we got there because we have a very strong team unit.

estern Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic has blamed a mix of fatigue and new combinations for his side’s 1-0 loss to Wellington last Friday. Less than a fortnight ago the Wanderers were crowned Champions of Asia in front of a hostile crowd in Saudi Arabia, but now they’re battling to get off the bottom of the A-League ladder, suffering their third straight loss to start the season. Speaking after the game, Popovic admitted his side suffered a case of fatigue during the dying stages of the match, which in turn saw Wellington’s Nathan Burns score the game’s only goal in the 79th minute. “Our performance definitely deserved something out of the game but we were probably fatigued in the end,” he said. “A lot of players were also making their first start, a few players were backing up as well but there were very encouraging signs for us.” Players who made their debut starts for the Wanderers last Friday night included

there are a lot of good signs there,” Popovic said. “We’re encouraged but it was disappointing to lose one at the end there. I think fatigue set in.” Fatigue may well play a part for the Wanderers again this weekend when they make the long trip to Perth to take on the first-placed Glory. The Wanderers’ mileage count has been staggering this year, racking up well over 150,000km in the air since March. Their frequent flyer miles will only continue to increase over the next month with trips to Perth, Adelaide and Morocco for the FIFA Club World Cup. There may be some spice in Saturday night’s clash against Perth however, with the Wanderers coming up against ex-teammate Youssouf Hersi for the first time since his departure from the club. Hersi was a key member of the Wanderers team over the past two seasons and played a major role in the side’s early Asian Champions League campaign. Following their match against Perth, the Wanderers will play their first home game of the season when they meet old foes Central Coast on Wednesday night.

The Western Sydney Wanderers take on the ladder leading Perth Glory this Saturday at 9.30pm ADT. Catch all the action LIVE on FOX SPORTS 505 (FOX SPORTS 4HD & 4)
One look at the ladder triggers the thought of a bit of disbelief. Brisbane and the Wanderers, six months ago engaged in a Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium, stuck down at the bottom of the pile. Brisbane, their issues run deep. All eras come to an end, and while it is too early to suggest they can’t give themselves a chance of defending their Championship by making the finals, many things need to rectify themselves before Brisbane can be a chance. The Wanderers, their issues are totally different. Tony Popovic sounded very positive after the loss in Wellington, the club’s third straight to start the season. Of course, thanks to what happened in Saudi Arabia, it’s the greatest slow start to a season since the Missing Link Rhinos went winless at the start of the first ever Neanderthal Premier league in 500,000 BC. The Wanderers will come good. But when? A trip to Perth is never easy, though with
the added bonus of just football to concentrate on – unlike post Champions League victory – preparations will be better than the Wellington game. True judgement will come after that. Four home games in a row in 14 days. Central Coast, Newcastle, Sydney and Brisbane. They have to get going then, because if not, the distractions start again, albeit a good one first with the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco. Once that is done, it’s back for a few games in the A-League before the Asian Cup brings the competition to a halt for a few weeks in January. Then a few more A-League games before the Asian Champions League resumes at the end of February. So there’s only pockets of time where full focus is on the A-League, though in truth, it just gives the ‘Popovic Planning’ template another chance to shine. Regardless, they have to get moving soon, and the impending home games, the four in 14 days, loom as crucial elements if success is to be attained again.

is season may be coming to an end next week but Nepean Ducks quarterback Travis Tamapua admits he’s thoroughly enjoyed his first year of gridiron in Australia. The 20-year-old moved from his home on the Hawaiian island of Oahu to a house in Mt Druitt earlier this year and quickly became the face of the new local Gridiron NSW franchise. Tamapua began his American football career at age 14 and soon after was a key member of his high school football team. He was even set to play for the University of Hawaii before relocating to Australia for family reasons. Speaking with the Weekender, Tamapua explained how he went from a rising football star in Hawaii to an unknown Duck in Penrith. “We’d been planning to move to Australia for a long time because my mum’s family lives here,” he revealed. “Before I moved here some friends of mine informed me about the gridiron situation here in Penrith so I went to the fields in Cranebrook to check out a training session. That’s where I met coach Lee Hines.
“I added coach on Facebook and he messaged me about training and when the season was due to start. I showed up to every training session to make a good impression.” After watching impressive highlight videos of Tamapua on YouTube, coach Hines instantly gave the young Hawaiian the role of running his team’s new offence. Tamapua said he relished the opportunity to be the Ducks’ starting quarterback in their inaugural season but admitted it was a struggle initially, adapting to his new and inexperienced teammates. “I got over it quickly and ended up getting comfortable with the boys. The environment is definitely different but I still get the same jitters when I’m playing,” he said. The popular American sport is developing a strong following here in Australia, which is only set to increase since the recent news of NRL superstar Jarryd Hayne’s departure to America to pursue his own NFL dreams. “Hayne had a big impact on rugby league and a lot of kids looked up to him, so they’re probably going to want to try American football now as well,” Tamapua said.
