ingswood High School has had a win after a relentless campaign for a new school hall. The State Opposition says it’ll spend $4 million to build the hall if elected on March 28. It’s Labor’s second big education announcement in the local area in a week, after confirming air conditioning for Bennett Road Public School. “If elected in a few weeks Labor will set aside $4 million to upgrade your hall to give you a state of the art facility, a facility that this school deserves and a school that this community so desperately needs,” said Shadow Minister for Education and Training, Ryan Park. Mr Park commended the advocacy surrounding the hall, after the school’s P&C and students produced a strong campaign to secure the funding, including a video on social media. “Thank you very much to each of the parents, staff members, students and broader community along with our three great candidates who have been tireless advocates,” he said. “You’ve made this a community issue, and regardless of any size of politics, that’s what you should be doing.” But the Opposition’s commitment to the school has been questioned by Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres. “Labor has ignored Kingswood High for 20 years,” Mr Ayres said. “Since being elected I have delivered increased needs based funding and also funded the Cafe Training facility at Kingswood High. I’ll continue to work with the school principal, P&C and wider

Prue Car, Ryan Park, Emma Husar and Todd Carney with members of the Kingswood High community community to ensure Kingswood High gets the facilities it deserves.” Kingswood P&C President, Joe Terry said after campaigning for a number of years, it’s great to see the school may be brought up to speed. “Our school has lagged behind a lot of schools in the area in terms of infrastructure available to its students,” he said. “This is a great call by the Labor candidates,

albeit it’s election time, but it’s all part of the process to get people on side.” Kingswood High School Captain, Curtis Robin said even though it’s his last year, it’s very exciting to see what the future brings for students at the school in the coming years. “Whether they’re in Year Seven now, or Years Five and Six in primary school, it’s going to be very exciting for them to get new facilities,” he said.

Construction begins on road upgrade set to relieve congestion and create new jobs DALE DRINKWATER

assers by were pleased to see the first mound of soil turned at the site of the $70 million Werrington Arterial Road upgrade that marked the beginning of construction. State Minister for Roads and Freight, Duncan Gay met with Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott and Liberal Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies at the Gipps St site on Monday. During Mr Gay’s announcement, a black four-wheel-drive drove past and honked, and its passenger yelled, “it’s about time!”. Mr Gay was not surprised and said it’s not the first time he has heard “about time” as this project is very important to the community. “About time. You hear that? I hear that all the time. Get on with it, it’s about time and that epitomises what we are doing,” he said. “This one is about congestion, it’s about people getting home sooner, and it’s about safety and about relieving pressure on other roads east of here and west of here.” With a benefit to cost ratio (BCR) of almost 4:1, the project is expected to generate economic benefits almost four

times the initial investment. “If we get a one or a one plus, that’s pretty good and a project will go ahead. 4:1 is an exceptional BCR and just indicates how important it is to the community,” Mr Gay said. Ms Scott is pleased to see works were beginning only weeks after the announcement of Burton Contractors Pty Ltd as the preferred tenderer, so western Sydney can get closer to securing 12,000 new smart jobs. “The Australian Government is getting on with delivering key infrastructure projects in Lindsay and I am pleased to see major investment in road projects creating thousands of jobs in the western Sydney region,” she said. Ms Scott said the Penrith Business Alliance estimated projects such as the Werrington Park Corporate Centre and the Dunheved Business Park will deliver 6,000 smart jobs each to the region. “That’s 12,000 smart jobs the Werrington Arterial will provide, this is why Tanya [Davies] and I have fought so hard for this,” she said. Ms Davies pushed for the project since her days in Council, and said the project will also relieve congestion at Mamre Road and The Northern Road.

There’s no plan to move Panthers home games away from Penrith I attended the press conference back in 2007 when Jackie Kelly announced that she wouldn’t be contesting the election later that year. After a successful run as a high profile Howard Government Minister, Mrs Kelly presumably saw the writing on the wall – the Kevin ‘07 juggernaut was going to be impossible to stop. People often forget how 2007 played out when it comes to Jackie Kelly. While the ‘pamphlet scandal’ dominated the final days of the campaign, Mrs Kelly was never contesting the seat anyway – although she maintained a presence through the election campaign. She was the Federal Lindsay MP for some 11 years. Her rise through the Parliament is well documented and something for Penrith to be proud of. Mrs Kelly is of course now back on the political scene as an Independent fighting for the State seat of Penrith, and I really hope that for her sake, she doesn’t undo the positive work she did as part of the Howard Government. On Sunday, her campaign went from impossible to achieve commitments like free parking at Nepean Hospital and widening the M4, to the totally bizarre with a flyer handed out by supporters and trailer advertising claiming that the Liberal Party wants to move Penrith Panthers home games to Homebush. “Keep Panthers local”, the flyer screams. “Jackie Kelly got $10 million to upgrade Penrith Stadium. Jackie Kelly wants to keep Panthers home games in Penrith,” it read. That’s an old fashion scare tactic. More than that, it’s not true. In fact, if anything, the Panthers face a very bright future in Penrith with the very real possibility that a new sporting complex will be built here, which would of course become the home of the NRL in greater western Sydney. I can tell you that Penrith MP and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres was seething on Sunday when he

saw the Jackie Kelly advertising. So was Panthers CEO Warren Wilson, who stressed to me on Tuesday that there is simply no plan to move games to Homebush. Let’s make one thing clear: No government can force the Panthers to move from Penrith. Nor do the Panthers want to move from Penrith or have a plan to do so. The Panthers, under the very strong leadership of Warren Wilson, Phil Gould and Don Feltis, will drive the decision-making about the club’s future and if what we’ve seen so far is any indication, the future is in very, very safe hands with this leadership trio. There is clearly no love lost between Mr Ayres and Mrs Kelly, which has been an interesting side-point to this election campaign. In many ways, the traditional Labor v Liberal battle has been sidetracked, in Penrith anyway. Mrs Kelly’s claims that the Liberal Party wants to move Penrith home games to Homebush is simply wrong. In my opinion it stinks of desperation. It’ll definitely be interesting to see what impact Mrs Kelly does have on March 28. She has the very real potential to split the Liberal vote. But with Independents unlikely to have any real influence in the new Parliament after March 28, there’s a real fear that going away from either of the major parties could be detrimental to Penrith’s future. It looks like it’s going to be a rocky old road to polling day. And another thing... Penrith lost a true icon this week with the passing of 82-year-old Arthur Spowart. You may not know his name, but if you’ve lived here for any decent amount of time, you would know his face. He was for many years known as the ‘Penrith Running Man’. Rest in peace, Arthur.

Labor promises to fund air conditioning at Bennett Road Public School

Ryan Park, Prue Car and local parents attend the school have fallen victim to heat stroke, others have experienced migraines and parents have been known to pull their children out of school during hot summer days. “The teachers actually took some of their own temperatures within the classrooms and that’s where we have got to 46 degrees; it was in November last year,” Ms Crow said.

tudents at Bennett Road Public School, Colyton, have suffered in the heat for far too long, according to Labor Candidate for Londonderry, Prue Car. Ms Car and Shadow Minister for Education, Ryan Park, visited the local school last week, promising to air condition Bennett Road Public, as well as Willmot Public School, if Labor is voted into power following the election this month. Bennett Road Public School is without air conditioning in almost every building and teachers have reported that classrooms have reached temperatures of over 40 degrees indoors, which has parents furious. “Being in the heat every day they just lose concentration, they get in trouble, they don’t want to do their work. It was only at the end of last year that I had to pick my child up from heat stroke,” said parent and P&C Treasurer, Ursula Crow. “He had already been out in the heat for sport and then he came straight back to school and into a hot room and had no way to cool his body temperature back down.” A number of the 500 students who

“That was when we decided that enough is enough. It is not just about what is on the outside, those kids are sitting in a hot box.” The announcement has come as a result of consultations between the Labor Candidate and parents, like Ms Crow. “We know that the western suburbs of Sydney are without doubt some of the hottest places and it is just unacceptable that there are schools in 2015 with no air conditioning. This is not an acceptable way for students to be learning,” Ms Car said. “We shouldn’t have to ask parents to fundraise through the P&C for basic school infrastructure; they should be focused on other things, not forced to raise for air conditioning.” Ms Car went one step further, saying that even if she was elected into the seat of Londonderry but Labor is not voted into power, she will still fight relentlessly for the children. “I will be calling on whoever is in Government to air condition Willmot Public School and Bennett Road Public School. It is not acceptable that we have both of these schools that don’t have air conditioning. If I am elected as the local member I will be fighting to ensure that this happens,” she said.

State Election 2015

Foley’s commitment “a good start” Katrina’s brave fight for victims becomes a State Election issue just weeks out from the March 28 poll KATHERINE TWEED

@ktweed_

ocal resident Katrina Keshishian is one step closer to making a positive change for the victims of crime, after NSW Labor announced it would increase the amount of compensation for victims if elected into Government. Ms Keshishian was gang-raped in 2008 after a night out at a licensed venue in St Marys and knowing that as a victim of violent crime she was eligible for government compensation, years later she made a claim. But during the process legislation was passed, making cuts to the scheme that meant that the maximum amount of compensation was reduced from $50,000 to $15,000. She began a petition and has approached both Liberal and Labor leaders to campaign for a change. Mike Baird and the Liberal Government is yet to make any commitment but this week Luke Foley announced that Labor would reverse the changes if it is elected into Government, come March 28. “Over 20,000 victims of violent crime have had their compensation retrospectively cut – often after waiting years to

L

have their claim assessed in the first place,” Mr Foley said. “The Liberals’ reform of victims compensation reflects a Government with no compassion or sympathy towards victims of crime. A Labor Government will reverse the Liberals’ cruel retrospective cuts to compensation for victims of violent crime.” Ms Keshishian said that the announcement represents an important step in her campaign “It is great that the leaders are finally starting to listen and take in the terrible things that happen to us as victims. Labor is looking at reversing the cuts and I think it is a really compassionate thing that they are doing. I don’t see it as a win, I see it as a good start,” she said. “I’m giving Mike Baird the chance to do the right thing – he has the opportunity now. Obviously Luke Foley sees it as an issue that needs to be resolved, now Mike Baird needs to listen and do the right thing by the 24,000 victims he is letting down.” She said that if the Liberal Party does not reverse the changes, she will see it as victimising women, and the most vulnerable women at that. “The majority of people who applied for victims of crime compensation were

Katrina Keshishian is fighting for better compensation for victims of crime women. Not only did Mike Baird retrospectively cut compensation for victims of violent crimes such as rape and domestic violence, he also cut funding to women’s homeless refuges and domestic violence centres,” she said. “How can women not feel targeted when so much funding has been taken away

from us but Mr Baird is happy to give away over $600 million to sporting centres?” 132,000 people have signed Ms Keshishian’s petition in favour of victims of crime; it can be found at www.change.org/ helpvictims. Your thoughts: Email us at news@westernweekender.com.au.

The Traffic Jam in My Brain

A learner driver has been arrested by local police after a breath test proved he was allegedly driving with a mid range PCA. At about 10.20pm on Friday, March 6, police were called to Lakeview Drive, Cranebrook with reports of a car driving erratically in the area. With the assistance of PolAir police located the vehicle, which had allegedly collided with a street sign. Police spoke to the driver, who was allegedly an unaccompanied learner, and breath tested him. The breath test returned a positive reading and the man, a 19-year-old, was taken back to Penrith Police Station for breath analysis. Police allege that it returned a reading in the mid range. He was consequently charged and will appear in court on March 25.

A motorcycle rider is due to appear in court for a string of driving related offences after he was spoken to by police in Oxley Park last week. At about 9pm on Thursday, March 5, police were patrolling Brisbane Street when they allegedly saw a man riding a motorcycle without a helmet. The rider was stopped in a nearby street, where it was discovered that the 39-year-old Blacktown man was the holder of a disqualified license. Police allege that in addition, the man was riding a stolen vehicle. He was arrested and taken to St Marys Police Station where a subsequent breath analysis returned a positive reading of 0.202. The rider was issued Court Attendance Notices for a range of offences. He was refused bail twice in court and will next appear on Thursday, March 19.

Jamisontown: Man charged after throwing rock at car

Police are appealing for information from the public about a jet ski accident that occurred on the Nepean River last week. The accident occurred at about 8pm on Wednesday, March 4, about 100 metres south of the M4 bridge. Police say that a blue, white and black jet ski and a red jet ski collided. Police are appealing for information from the public so that they can further piece together exactly what happened in the incident. If you know anything, contact Penrith police station.

A man has been charged for damaging another person’s property after he allegedly threw a rock at a parked car in Jamisontown. Police say that on Monday, March 9, a 32-year-old man was walking along Station Street with his partner when the pair allegedly got into an argument. The man then allegedly picked up a rock and threw it at a parked car, causing some damage. A passer by witnessed the incident and contacted police, who arrived at the scene not long afterwards and charged the man with ‘damage property’. He will appear before Penrith Local Court on March 30.

Local family win $15 million A local family were shocked to discover they’d been multi-millionaires for one week and didn’t even know it after winning a staggering $15 million in a recent Powerball draw. The flabbergasted husband, who wishes to remain anonymous, only checked the winning entry a week after the prize draw and contacted NSW Lotteries immediately for confirmation that he’d scooped the entire division one prize pool of $15,260,074.71. “That’s a lot of money!” the stunned winner managed to utter after a long silence. “All I can say is it feels very strange. It definitely hasn’t sunk in yet. I can’t wait to tell my wife. I don’t think she’ll believe me!” The lucky family will pay off their mortgage and then plan for a future where money will never really be an issue again. “We’ll have to sit down and have a good hard think about what we’ll do with the prize money, but we’ll definitely start by paying off our mortgage, the car and the credit cards.” The unregistered winning 50-game QuickPick was purchased from Lennox Newsagency on the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains. The winning numbers in Powerball draw 980 on February 26 were 19, 22, 36, 5, 18 and 8. The Powerball number was 9.

Assault on bus Police have charged a man in relation to an assault that occurred on a public bus in Kingswood last weekend. Not long after, the male passenger allegedly indecently assaulted the female before grabbing her neck. At this point, the driver has intervened and police were contacted. Police attended shortly after and arrested the man. He was issued Court Attendance Notices for the offences of ‘Commit act of indecency’, ‘Common assault’, ‘Stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm’ and ‘Use offensive language in public place’. Local students hold vigil for Bali duo Capital punishment is the “fast food” of law and order, says student and Greens candidate DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

he University of Western Sydney (UWS) Kingswood Campus has shown its support for ‘Bali nine’ duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran through an on-campus vigil on Tuesday. The event was addressed by university representatives, including 23-year-old student and Greens candidate for Londonderry, Shane Gorman, who is of similar age to the pair when they made the biggest mistake of their lives. Chan and Sukumaran were sentenced to death by firing squad by the Indonesian government for planning to smuggle over 8kg of heroin from Indonesia to Australia in 2005. Lecturer and human rights activist, James Arvanitakis expressed it’s not uncommon for people in their twenties to make mistakes and that it’s unfair to continue to judge them so harshly. “Capital punishment doesn’t do anything for anyone, it doesn’t make society a better place. There’s no way if these guys die tomorrow, that we are going to be any better off,” he said. “It’s important that we continue to show our support in any way possible.”

T

Greens candidate for Londonderry, Shane Gorman addressing the crowd at the UWS Kingswood campus on Tuesday

Mr Gorman referred to capital punishment as the mere “fast food” of law and order, and said it’s no good for an international society. “It’s cheap, easy, it’s not very good for us, we don’t really feel very good about it and it’s really just a cop out,” he said. “I understand countries should be able to determine their culture, their future and the way they conduct themselves, but I think the international community is moving away from that.” Mr Gorman believes the newly appointed Indonesian president has a big precedent to set to show he is a serious leader in the country and will not back down to international pressures. “There’s a strong nationalistic backing in Indonesia to have these people executed and that’s what we are up against,” he said. “It’s just a shame that we’ve got two men over there that are being used as pawns in a game.” UWS’s chaplain Christine Gapes said she hopes the Indonesian government can find honour in giving mercy and forgiveness to changed men. “They are not killing bad men, they are killing an artist and a pastor,” Ms Gapes said.

GO CRAZY ON OUR CARNIVAL WITH OUR UNLIMITED RIDES PASS FOR JUST $10* (includes the giant slide, jumping castle, cup & saucer, pirate ship, rock climbing wall, video game truck, hampster balls, laser tag, & ‘Tumbletown’ playground)

This past week has seen a delegation of 29 students plus teachers and interpreters from Kinjo College in Hakusan, Japan visit four local childcare centres to learn about the latest in childcare studies. Penrith Council’s Children’s Services plays a vital role in our community and is respected by the many parents and carers whose children attend one of our 25 childcare centres. Our centres provide a safe, secure and inclusive environment for all children, including children with additional needs. The past Japanese delegations have been highly impressed with our programs that is now into its sixth visit as a biennial program between Penrith City Council and Kinjo College. This year’s larger delegation broke into smaller groups to visit the four

childcare centres. The smaller groups allow the Kinjo students to have greater interaction with local teachers and children. The visits benefit the college students as well as our local children who get to learn about another culture. Some of the activities include traditional Japanese games, making origami and singing Japanese children’s songs. The longer they stay, the more we can show them of our first rate quality children’s services while also allowing our local economy to reap financial benefits from their stay with many enjoying the local attractions in Penrith. Council is pleased to be able to play its part as a good corporate citizen in this worthwhile program that has great benefits to children both in Australia and Japan.

State Election 2015

Prue steps up for next challenge After seven years as a local Councillor, Labor’s candidate for Londonderry is ready for the next step DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

n addition to being a Councillor on Penrith City Council and a mother of a two-year-old, Prue Car has signed up for a new challenge – to win the seat of Londonderry for Labor at the March 28 State Election. Ms Car is bringing her experience in local politics to the table for her State campaign, and says she wants to give back to the community in which she was raised. Ms Car has door knocked tens of thousands of residents in her electorate since being pre-selected in November 2013, and found residents feel “they have been taken for granted”. With a two-year-old son, Ms Car plans to raise her own family in the area, while continuing to fight for a range of local issues that she believes can be committed to without selling off public assets.

» Being a Councillor “What really drove me to run for Penrith Council is giving back to the community in which I grew up,” she said. “I’m really passionate that government of all levels can make a positive difference in people’s lives and local government

» Electricity and the cost of living “People are really struggling with the cost of living,” she said. “You look at the current government’s plan to sell off our publicly owned electricity assets and people are really concerned that will drive up their cost of living when they just can’t afford it. “Everyone from pensioners to people like myself who are raising young families, we can’t withstand that increase in cost of living and we know from history power prices will go up if the electricity assets are sold.” » Congestion versus jobs “We absolutely acknowledge there needs to be plans to address the infrastructure backlogs in terms of roads, but in the long term strategic sense, what we really need is jobs in places like Penrith,” she said. “Luke Foley has implemented a Greater Sydney Commission, which will report directly to parliament and part of its remit is to look at jobs creation in the suburbs, and that is crucial for Penrith. “We can address the congestion, we can build new roads, but we need to give people local employment opportunities. “ » Radioactive waste “The current government was elected on

can obviously make a huge difference in providing quality and fair and equitable services. “I want to do that in the area that I love and the area where I’m choosing to stay and raise my family.”

a promise they wouldn’t transfer radioactive waste to Kemps Creek and I’m really proud to have stood with the community every day on that issue, fighting against treating us like we are the dumping ground of Sydney. We shouldn’t be taking radioactive waste they deem to be unsafe in Hunters Hill,” she said. “Every time we expose the government’s plan on sending the waste to Kemps Creek they come out and say they’re not doing it, but the truth is they haven’t provided a determination on the planning application. They are not providing an alternative for the dangerous waste.” » Gipps Street Park “Every person raised the need for the Gipps St Recreational Precinct,” she said. “There are families who have moved in there two decades ago on the promise they would have one of western Sydney’s best recreational precincts across the road from them, which never eventuated because no-one ever funded it. “Labor has committed to providing the $9 million of funding that Council needs to construct it.” » Cumberland Plain Woodland “We need road and rail links for employment opportunities, but we have to make sure we plan around people’s homes and where we have the critically endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland,” she said. “That’s why I led Council’s reversal on its position [and said] that we wouldn’t support any corridors through Orchard Hills or Claremont Meadows or Cumberland Plain Woodland, now Labor has made

Prue Car is hoping to win the seat of Londonderry on March 28 a commitment that we would actually undertake an independent environment assessment.” » Badgery’s Creek airport “I think we need to ensure infrastructure

is delivered anyway, not because of the airport,” she said. “I want to make sure we have a curfew, because the concept of a 24-hour freight airport in western Sydney is just not good enough.”

n alleged drink driver was involved in a crash last weekend, which left a man trapped in a car and saw three others transported to hospital. Emergency services were called to the scene at Hobart Street, St Marys, at about 6.35pm on Sunday, March 8, to find that a two vehicle crash had taken place. “Initial investigations suggest a silver Mazda 6 travelling west and a Holden Astra travelling east crashed, before the Mazda left the roadway and crashed into

a tree,” a police spokesperson said. The motion of crashing into the tree trapped the passenger of the Mazda, a 40-year-old man, in the vehicle for a short time before he was released and taken to Westmead Hospital. He had injuries that were not life threatening. The three people in the other car, the 25-year-old male driver, a 55-year-old woman and a 59-year-old woman were treated at the scene before they were taken to Nepean Hospital. They had minor injuries. A 35-year-old woman from St Marys was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Greyhounds in crisis

Greens want greyhound racing to be suspended DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

reens Candidate for Londonderry Shane Gorman says greyhound racing should be suspended and has called for the support of the major parties. Mr Gorman met with Greens MP John Kaye and animal rights activists at Richmond Race Club last week following revelations of live-baiting in the industry. Among the initial revelations was a Londonderry training facility that allegedly used live possums and rabbits to ‘blood’ greyhounds. “It is hard to comprehend that such gross animal abuse has been allowed to occur in our backyard,” Mr Gorman said. “A suspension of all races at the Richmond Race Club is the only way to stop participants potentially profiting from abhorrent live-baiting practices. “The greyhound racing industry is now devoid of integrity. Any money now won on a greyhound race has almost certainly been corrupted by live baiting.” Mr Gorman said both major parties have failed to confront the live baiting crisis that the Greens believe is still growing. “Despite labelling the live baiting revela-

G

tions as abhorrent, the Liberal-National government have allowed racing to continue,” he said. “By failing to allocate the funds needed to rehabilitate and rehome greyhounds that are facing disqualification from racing, Liberal Candidate Bernard Bratusa and his party are ensuring a second wave animal welfare crises.” Mr Bratusa defended his party’s position, and referred to the establishment of a Special Commission of Inquiry into the state’s greyhound racing industry. “[The] announcement underlines the NSW Liberals and Nationals commitment to rid the industry of ‘live baiting’ and ensure animal welfare and integrity are at the heart of the greyhound racing industry,” he said. “There are a lot of good people involved in greyhound racing and it is very important their interests, and the future of the industry as a whole benefit from the Special Commission of Inquiry.” Greens NSW MP John Kaye said by refusing to suspend all greyhound races, the current government is failing to stop the flow of money. “All races must be suspended to stop these participants profiting from their unconscionable behaviour,” he said.

he dilapidated Thornton Hall is set to be returned to its former glory, with the announcement that UrbanGrowth NSW has lodged a Development Application to Penrith Council for its rehabilitation. While the hall has had a long history in Penrith, built in the 1870’s by Thomas Smith, there has been concerns over the past year and a half about its future, as the new Thornton housing development grew closer to its doorsteps. But UrbanGrowth NSW has taken the matter into its own hands and with the help of heritage specialists and TKD Architects, has developed plans to restore the hall as well as build a new childcare centre for up to 188 children. “I am extremely happy to be advised that the Development Application for Thornton Hall’s restoration and future has finally been lodged with Penrith City Council, said local resident Laura Player, a descendent of the Smith family who has long campaigned for the hall’s restoration. “My extended families and I are looking forward to seeing this unique Penrith landmark restored back to its former glory and live on to the next century and beyond. family with two young children have been forced out of their St Marys home after a ruthless fire ripped through the property last week. At about 1.30pm on Friday, March 6, emergency services were called to the scene by distressed neighbours, who noticed large amounts of black smoke issuing from the roof of the home. Upon arrival, NSW Fire and Rescue officers found the house was well alight, with the fire having spread through the roof. The fire was extinguished and police established a crime scene.

A

While no one was injured during the incident, residents were initially concerned that there were family members home at the time. “My neighbour saw the smoke and she called ‘000’. She shouted out to us that it looked like somebody was home so we rushed to the house to have a look, said neighbour, Rita Hoskins. Another neighbour, who first called ‘000’ said that it was lucky that she had been home at the time. “I was just going outside to do the washing and I could see some smoke coming from the back of their roof. Something was exploding, I don’t know what it was but I heard some explosions and then I called the fire brigade, she said.

Radioactive waste “This is not industrial waste, this is radioactive waste and should not be dumped in western Sydney’’ – words spoken by an outraged Stuart Ayres when in opposition, and supported by Tanya Davies who holds the state seat where this waste is to be dumped, namely Kemps Creek. Now that the Baird Government is pushing ahead to get rid of this toxic waste in western Sydney, Stuart Ayres and Tanya Davies are suddenly silent. Just like Tony Abbott they said one thing in opposition, and now the opposite in government. BRIAN O’NEILL, CRANEBROOK

Rally should be covered I cannot understand why the Western Weekender has not reported on a ‘No Mosques in Penrith Rally’ held in St Marys on February 22 where more than 300 people attended. I would have thought that such an important issue that created a big fuss in Penrith Council would have been something that the residents of Penrith would like to know about. GRAHAME GOOD, GLENMORE PARK

Please listen to us If an application for a synagogue or a new church for the Penrith area had stirred up as much resistance as the mosque applications have, they’d probably have just backed down. The

continued push for these two mosques shows a complete disregard for our community’s wants and needs. Migrants who have come from Muslim countries are particularly alarmed at the spread of Islam in Australia, as they have experienced the treatment of non Muslims as second class citizens in accordance with Islamic Sharia law. Many of them are descended from the Armenian and Assyrian populations which were largely exterminated by the predominantly Muslim Ottoman empire. To disregard their concerns now, when the Christian presence in the Middle East is yet again under threat, is not only heartless but foolhardy. Why should there be any more mosques built in Australia until Christian churches are allowed to be built in the Islamic heartland of Saudi Arabia? If Muslims want more influence and concessions in our society, let them win us over and not run us over. KIM FURST, PENRITH

Short memories Never mind a coin collection in Bandah Aceh to repay the generosity of the Australian people – after the events of the last few weeks, we should receive a cheque from Jakarta as a total payback for the assistance given to them in the wake of the tsunami. NEIL WILLIAMSON, VIA EMAIL

On Saturday, March 7, a group of staff, students, representatives from the UWS Ally Network and Queer Collective, joined thousands in Sydney marching in the 2015 Mardi Gras to demonstrate the University’s commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion in education. “As a vibrant and diverse intellectual

community, UWS promotes a culture that is inclusive of sexual and gender diversity,” said Vice-Chancellor, Professor Barney Glover. The university places a huge importance on creating an environment where everyone is equal and respected, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender or backgrounds, according to Director of Equity and Diversity at UWS, Dr Sev Ozdowski. “Many people in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer community find themselves coming to terms with their sexual identity while studying at university,” he said.

Consumer Affairs

Fair Trading warns consumers to be wary when it comes to sales people and “extended warranties” TROY DODDS

@troydodds

t’s the line you often hear when making a big purchase – do you want to extend the warranty? But NSW Fair Trading Minister, Matthew Mason-Cox, says retailers need to stop “overselling the virtues of extended warranties”, as they offer little value to consumers. “The facts are that consumers have rights under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), with or without an extended warranty,” Mr Mason-Cox said. “Whether it’s a fridge, washing machine or TV, if a manufacturer’s warranty on the products expires after 12 months, it doesn’t mean a consumer needs to buy an extended warranty. “The law is clear. With items like these, it is reasonable for a consumer to expect that their purchase should last beyond 12 months and as such, would be entitled to a repair, refund or replacement even if an extended warranty has lapsed.’’ Last year, NSW Fair Trading received 340 complaints about extended warranties. Defective goods, repairs and requests for refunds were the focus of grievances recorded. One case that came to NSW Fair Trading involved a consumer who purchased a

I

Extended warranty? Think about it seriously, warns Fair Trading NSW washing machine that started rusting after two years and was refused a refund under the extended warranty, as rust was not covered.

The consumer received a replacement machine after NSW Fair Trading intervened. Another consumer contacted NSW Fair

Trading after she was asked to pay for someone to uninstall her dryer so that the manufacturer could inspect and repair it. “Always read the terms and conditions of any extended warranty carefully and make your own assessment as to whether it is worth it,’’ Mr Mason-Cox said. “The details in the written material are legally binding so you should rely on what it says, not on what the salesperson says. “Some extended warranties may only replace the product or refund customers based on annual depreciation. “This means the product you get as a replacement may be inferior to the one you originally bought or you may be refunded less money than you originally paid.’’ Suppliers may also be breaching the law if they put undue pressure or use unfair tactics to get consumers to buy an extended warranty or mislead consumers into paying for the rights they already have under the ACL. Consumers should contact the retailer in the first instance to resolve disputes. “But if consumers can’t resolve the matter, they should contact NSW Fair Trading on 13 32 20, which have a strong record with solving disputes,” Mr MasonCox said. Do you have a warranty horror story? We want to know about it. Email us at news@ westernweekender.com.au.

New face to guide local Chamber of Commerce TROY DODDS

@troydodds

ew General Manager Kerrie Reeder says she wants to take the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce “into the 21st century” by revitalising the 88-year-old local institution. The Chamber is an important part of Penrith’s business community but is undergoing an overhaul to ensure the best possible future for current and potential members. “The implementation of our new membership packages is the first item on the agenda and is underway,” Ms Reeder said. “We will offer members, over the next few months, business opportunity activities that are new and exciting to businesses in the Penrith Valley. These new benefits will roll out monthly at our Complete Recruitment Solutions Chamber Connect nights held the first Tuesday of each month. “The Chamber is part of the fabric of Penrith being established in 1927 by local business members including Lamrocks Solicitors and Attorneys and Freeburn Surveyors. That kind of foundation is fundamental to the credibility of such an

N

organisation. My hopes are to take the Chamber into the 21st century, working with the Board, to implement innovative and forward thinking opportunities for our members.” Ms Reeder said that like all membership driven organisations, the Chamber has to understand the needs of its members. “We have initiated research which we have taken on board, we are listening to our members and within the next few months we will be launching initiatives that will address these issues,” she said. “We also understand that membership growth is a vital part of the Chamber’s ongoing success and several projects are in place to address this as well. As in all business, growth and sustainability are a challenge but I feel very excited and optimistic that the Chamber will grow over the next few years along with Penrith itself.” Ms Reeder said the Chamber was not only about networking opportunities. “If physical networking is not what they are looking for then advice on advocacy, business regulations, what’s going on around town and member benefit programs are available from the Chamber,” she said. Charter signing puts Nepean High students on the right track to enter the workforce KATHERINE TWEED

@ktweed_

n a move that has them facing a future full of positive work choices, 185 Year 10 students at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School signed a special charter last week. The charter signing represented the students’ commitment to the Wider Choices Real Futures Program, which is a joint program between the school, local businesses and the Beacon Foundation. The program has been designed to encourage students to “learn until they earn”. “Beacon is a not for profit organisation that has been operating for 27 years and they have a very clear vision. A vision and a purpose to support young people to transition successfully into the workforce,” said Nepean High Principal, Max Foord. “It is about students agreeing to continue to engage in the learning process and develop the necessary skills until they are employed – learn until you earn.” The school has been part of the program for a number of years and with 100 per cent of their students studying until Year 12, attending TAFE, starting an apprenticeship or entering full time employment,

I

it has been deemed a success. For the students, the charter signing is a positive experience. “When I did sign the charter it made me feel like I have committed to getting somewhere in the workforce that I would be happy to do for the rest of my life. Also it makes me want to strive a little further and work a little harder to get where I want to be,” said Year 10 student Shania Kumarasamy, Beacon Student Leader. Fellow student and Beacon Student Leader, Natasha Brooks, said signing the charter has made her more committed to pursuing a career as a naval officer. “Making this promise has given me the motivation to make sure that I do commit to the career that I want to do and I will strive to work hard towards that,” she said. Ethan White, who is tossing up between a number of different career options, said that signing the charter gave him one of the best feelings. “You are making a commitment that you are going to strive for a better future. It gives you a good feeling of satisfaction,” he said. In addition to the students signing the charter, local businesses were also invited to sign it as a show of support to the students.

anthers on the Prowl have used funds raised by the Great Walk Foundation to purchase 15 new Microsoft Surface tablets for their students. The annual fundraising walk sees members of the community trek from Bathurst in western NSW to Blaxland in the Blue Mountains, to raise money for local charities. For the first time Panthers on the Prowl were one of the funding beneficiaries of the Great Walk Foundation’s hard earned feat. “We rely on any form of donations and to not have to pay for this technology out of our own funds is a great help,” said Prowl General Manager, Brad Waugh. The new tablets are utilised by the Prowl’s many primary school programs as well as by senior students in their adult computer literacy classes. The 15 Microsoft Surface tablets replace an aging fleet of laptops which were always breaking down. “Everyone that’s used them, in comparison, are very happy with the difference,” Mr Waugh said. The next Great Walk Foundation trek will be held in May.

Giant Easter egg hunt to take place in Queen Street this month

Lana’s work with the homeless results in Community Hero gong KATHERINE TWEED

@ktweed_

hough she may see her community work as a natural response to the homelessness issue in Penrith, reality is that Lana Borg is changing lives and her effort has not gone unnoticed. The local resident founded Mama Lana’s Community Foundation in 2013 and since then has been serving hot meals to the homeless community four nights a week. Her commitment to the community has earned her public recognition, when she was voted as the 2015 A.H. Beard Community Hero in the NSW Woman of the Year Awards. “Everyone there knew that I would take out the prize but I had no idea. I just look at it as feeding people who are hungry,” she said. Ms Borg started the foundation after learning about the sheer number of homeless people living in Penrith. “I didn’t even know that there were homeless people here in Penrith. When I saw that they were going down there and couldn’t even get a hot meal, I couldn’t believe it. I wanted to provide them with that,” she said. “Originally we had a group of about 15 or 20 people, mostly older men, who would come down but now we feed between 60 and 100 people every night.”

ree family events is what community is about, and in true community fashion, St Marys Town Centre is holding its free annual Easter Egg Hunt this month. On Saturday, March 28, families can come along to Coachman’s Park St Marys and register from 9am at the Town Centre Information Tent, with the hunt kicking off from 10am until 2pm. St Marys Town Centre Manager, Paulette Adams, said she hopes to see many more children joining in on the fun this year to

F

go in the draw to win an iPad Mini. “Last year saw approximately 600 kids registered for this event and we are hoping to increase that number this year,” she said. “Kids register, receive their passports, wristbands and Easter bags and off they roam to our participating retailers throughout Queen Street with a little help from our traffic controllers.” Children need to find the letters ‘E-AS-T-E-R E-G-G H-U-N-T’ in the windows of retailers throughout the street, write the business names on the passport and then drop their stamped passport into an Easter raffle entry box.

Local resident Lana Borg won the A.H Beard Community Hero Award last week Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres congratulated Ms Borg on being presented the award, which she was handed at a special presentation at NSW Parliament House last week. “Lana has been voted the winner in a pool of tough competition, having impressed both the judges and public. It’s fantastic to see Lana being publicly recognised,” Mr Ayres said following the presentation.

elebrating their strength and independence, while empowering each other, were the women of Jordan Springs this week, who came together on Monday for International Women’s Day. Women from all walks of life and all ages were in the spotlight as they met together for the morning community event at Jordan Springs Town Centre. They were treated to a free fitness session as well as a brunch and had the opportunity to hear from other local women who are passionate about empowering others. One such woman was Jordan Springs resident, Chloe Jones, who spoke to the women about health and wellbeing. Having struggled with her own health and fitness in the past, the issue is

C

important to the local yoga instructor and her past was part of the reason why she wanted to be involved in the event. “I had quite a lot of weight to lose after my first pregnancy, in fact it was about 50 kilograms. At the time I went to one of these events and I really liked the community nature of it and the way that it made women feel; it was really empowering,” she said. “The great thing about the Jordan Springs event is that it is all about local women. I think that it is a huge advantage that the women get to hear from someone who isn’t famous or well known. Local women need to be empowered by other local, regular women and I am really proud to be a part of that.” Ms Jones ran a yoga workshop on the day and is planning on running further classes on a weekly basis so that she can continue to motivate women in the local community.

The first notable Smith family member was Thomas Smith, who was born in 1819 in England, and after coming to Australia, married Jane Laimbeer with whom he raised nine children – a normal amount for that century. Thomas Smith was on the very first Council and was one of the first publicans in Penrith for 30 years, which explains the political presence of two of his children, eldest Thomas Richard (T.R) Smith, former Penrith Mayor, and second youngest the Hon. Sydney Smith. Thomas Smith had acquired land in the now CBD of Penrith, in which he built the Red Cow Inn on Belmore St in 1862, and after several years of building wealth on the success of the inn, built the iconic Victorian styled Thornton Hall in the 1870s. Across from the Thornton Hall was a

great big space of land that was locally referred to as Smith’s Paddock. Smith’s Paddock went on to be the site of Belmore Park, and the home of key historic sporting events. Even though Thomas Smith built Thornton Hall, he let several of his children live there over the next 20 years, and after living at his Red Cow Inn, moved into the homestead later in 1891. Thomas Smith’s son, T.R Smith, was Mayor of Penrith from 1889 until 1890, a member of the Legislative Assembly for Nepean for 16 non-consecutive years and a catalyst in the supply of Penrith’s first electricity and water stations. In 1890, T.R Smith’s father donated a section of his land on Belmore St, opposite the Red Cow Inn, for the use of Penrith’s very first lighting and electricity station. That year, Mayor Smith, along with his wife, the ‘Mayoress’, laid the foundation stone for the building for Penrith’s first electricity station on Belmore Street. Afterwards, they walked with a large group of townspeople down to the riverbank where they turned the sod for the first water pumping station from the

The silver trowel used to lay the foundation stone for Penrith’s first electricity station Nepean River that was to provide the town with a constant water supply. During T.R Smith’s role as mayor, and with the access to Belmore Park as a part of his father’s 312 acre Thornton Hall property, he wrote to Lord Sheffield in England inviting them to play cricket against the Nepean District side during their Australian Tour. Lord Sheffield accepted and they charged T.R Smith £100 to come and play against the team, which in that day was a small

fortune. In February 1892, Lord Sheffield’s English team was met by almost the whole town at the railway station and taken to Thornton Hall where they made a cricket pitch. Over two days, the teams battled it out and ended up remarkably drawing with each other. T.R Smith is thought to have suffered heavy financial losses after the match from his investment in advertising and promotion prior to the game. By the next year in 1893, T.R Smith declared bankruptcy and was sued by several people after being unable to pay debts. It is believed by his living relatives that the bankruptcy would have been a catalyst for his political decline in the years following. His father, Thomas Smith passed away in 1896, and T.R Smith took over the Red Cow Inn, with his brother, Sydney Smith, inheriting the Thornton Hall property. Today, Thornton Hall remains empty and bordered up with its doors presumed stolen. Recently, a DA has been submitted to Council to restore and transform the building into a childcare centre.

BUSINESS TIPS What International Women’s Day means

Why your website needs to be mobile-friendly

Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design

Michael Todd // Small Biz Connect Advisor Penrith Valley BEC

very year, it seems that International Women’s Day isn’t just about celebrating women, it also generally creates many discussions and debates about equality. Some of these discussions are not helpful and only result in widening the gap in understanding between genders (and often amongst women themselves). It should be a great opportunity to challenge stereotypes for women in business, not only to champion the cause of women, but to also shift the consequences for men. Although stereotypes have some measure of reality, this doesn’t mean that everyone fits the stereotype. For example, there is often an assumption that men are more rational than women, or that men are the ‘strong’ ones. Being more realistic about the variations amongst men and women, which are probably due more to personality than gender, takes the pressure off both sexes. A big part of showing what women in business are capable of (and a way

of smashing stereotypes) is to tell their stories. Via this column I have showcased some inspiring women (and I plan to do it a lot more!), because role models are a powerful way of showing women what they can achieve (despite stereotypes and attitudes of others perhaps indicating otherwise). Malala Yousafzai, despite her young age, is one such role model, whose bold actions, and subsequent speeches, have provided us with many inspiring quotes. This one perfectly summaries this topic: “We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back”. What a profound yet simple statement! Of course she is right: equality for women in business is not solely for the benefit of women. When women are given opportunities, and a culture in which to succeed, it benefits all of society. “Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them” (Unknown). t seems Google keep coming up with changes that will protect the searchers using their search engine. Google recently announced two important changes which will help users discover more mobile-friendly content. Internet users often forget that Google is competing for user trust and industry proficiency when it comes to online search. Google is beating their competition by staying focused on their customers, identifying what a searcher is most likely looking for when they search and rewarding companies who are trying to supply the best information, rather than play the game. As more people use mobile devices to access the Internet, Google’s algorithms have to adapt to usage patterns. From April 21 this year, Google is making another algorithm change in favour of the consumer, rewarding companies who are mobile-friendly first. Unfortunately, while previous algorithm updates have most heavily affected large companies, this new change is going to affect the smaller businesses who have yet to make mobile a priority.

Interestingly, a page qualifies as mobilefriendly if and when the following criteria are met, as determined by Google’s web crawler: • Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash. • Uses text that is readable without zooming. • Sizes content to the screen so consumers do not have to scroll horizontally or zoom. • Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped. Usage statistics say that whilst consumers may not yet be buying in large numbers from a mobile device, they are using them to research products before they make a purchase. Now you know Google will punish those who have yet to make the switch to a mobile friendly platform. So firstly, make sure every page of your site is mobile friendly through either responsive design or a separate mobile version. Google determines mobile friendliness on a page-by-page basis, so it’s very important that the entire site passes, not just a few main pages.

Panthers play for each other TROY DODDS @troydodds

I

n the moments before their match against the Bulldogs last Sunday, the Penrith squad gathered in a huddle on the Pepper Stadium turf. It’s a common sight in world sport and who knows what was said, but it provided a glimpse into what this squad is all about – playing for each other. Over the next 80 minutes, Penrith proved why they are one of the competition heavyweights this year – building their way to a 24-0 lead before showing the strength to deny a miracle Bulldogs comeback. Truth be told, the Panthers of a few years ago would probably have let the Bulldogs cross the line one more time in those final few minutes. Sure, there were standout performances last Sunday. George Jennings ran over 200 metres and scored on debut – the dream of any player coming into first grade. James

Segeyaro showed why he was the Hooker of the Year in 2014 by scoring a sensational try, making 31 tackles and running the ball himself nine times. And Elijah Taylor defended his heart out, making 45 tackles in the stifling heat (more than anyone else in the match). Individual brilliance aside, it’s what this bunch of guys do as a team that matters most. This is a team that clicks, where everybody knows their job, where nobody lets their teammate down. After kicking off the season with a win against Canterbury, Penrith now hit the road for a ‘home’ game against the Gold Coast Titans in Bathurst on Saturday afternoon. Last year’s trip to Bathurst, the first of a long-term deal with the regional town, was one to forget – the Panthers lost to the Sharks and saw Peter Wallace go down injured, never to be seen again in 2014. This time around they face a side that is going through significant turmoil in the shape of the Titans, who showed great grit and determination against the Tigers

PANTHERS V TITANS SATURDAY, MARCH 14 CARRINGTON PARK, 4.30PM REFEREES: GAVIN MORRIS AND ALAN SHORTALL TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 4.30PM RADIO: 2GB LIVE 4.30PM last weekend but ultimately went down thanks to a Pat Richards field goal in the dying moments. Confusion still surrounds the short term futures of star players Dave Taylor and Greg Bird. Given both plead not guilty to drugs charges on Monday, you really do have to wonder if the NRL has a leg to stand on in terms of keeping them out of the game. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary’s focus this week would have been on his own team

rather than the opposition. Focusing too much on the opposition, particularly when there’s a great deal of uncertainty surrounding them, is only going to cause you a migraine. Cleary probably earned himself a few grey hairs in those final 15 minutes against the Bulldogs on Sunday, but in retrospect, he’ll be glad it happened. It would have brought the squad down to Earth and certainly given Cleary something to work on with his troops during the week. Both Sika Manu and Brent Kite struggled when they came back on for their final stints and while the weather was probably partly to blame for the mini collapse, Cleary will need to ensure his middle is stronger for those final minutes, particularly if the game against the Titans is in the balance. The only thing Penrith didn’t do right on Sunday was go in for the kill when their prey was on the ground, struggling for life. I doubt they’ll make the same mistake if put in the same position again.

BLOOD CLOT ALMOST FLOORED BIG MCKENDRY

Sam McKendry overcame an injury-riddled pre-season to play for the Panthers last Sunday

» One of the untold injury stories over

the off-season was that of Sam McKendry. The big forward only had 20 minutes of contact work prior to last weekends’s game against Canterbury after developing a blood clot following ankle surgery. It put him in severe doubt for the season opener, but he held his own against the Bulldogs.

» Panthers boss Phil Gould has revealed

the club asked the NRL not to schedule home games in daytime hours during March and April because of the intense heat – but the pleas went unanswered. The game on Sunday was played in extremely hot conditions, which certainly affected the Bulldogs during the game and Penrith in the last 15 to 20 minutes. “We’ve pleaded with the league for the last three years not to play games out here in western Sydney in daytime conditions in March and April because it’s very hot,” Gould told Triple M.

Panthers Leagues Club last Sunday afternoon, several fans spotted a silver haired gentleman waiting for a lift on the side of Mulgoa Road. A second look, and it was obvious that the man was none other than Ray ‘Rabbits’ Warren.

Matthew Elliott made a return to Pepper Stadium last weekend – this time as part of the ABC Radio commentary team. Elliott certainly must have mixed feelings watching his former side emerge as such a huge success, but now appears to have found his home in the media.

» The TV ratings were great for last week-

end’s game between Penrith and Canterbury. The Channel Nine broadcast, into just two states, attracted 347,000 people. 259,000 watched the live broadcast in Sydney. The figures will boost significantly when daylight savings ends.

have been appointed as NRL Community Ambassadors, making them the first females to hold such roles. Tears as dream comes true After making his first grade debut last week, Reagan CampbellGillard is determined to play with the Panthers for many years to come

and soccer until U17’s, and then I started playing league again with Windsor,” he revealed. “It was definitely a dream to make first grade. I have three other cousins that play (Tariq, Ashton and Korbin Sims). I wanted to try and make it and be like them, make a name for myself.” The Fijian international made his longawaited first grade debut during the first half of Penrith’s 24-18 win over the Canterbury Bulldogs. “Watching the clock wind down, I could sense my time would come,” the prop forward recalled. “As soon as my name was called my hands were sweating so much that I had to spray my hands with a lot of grip spray. “My first tackle was on James Graham and my first hit up was against Aidan Tolman, although it was a real ‘girly’ hit just to get it out of the way.” Campbell-Gillard is contracted to the Panthers until the end of the 2016 season and hopes to remain at the club for life. “I definitely want to continue my career here, it’s probably the only club I want to be at,” he said. “The whole staff and playing group are great and the crowd is the best. It’s the club I want to be at.”

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

T

he first person Reagan CampbellGillard told that he was debuting in the opening round of the 2015 NRL season was his mum. They both cried. After years of battling away in the lower grades, picking up a few titles along the way (2013 Holden Cup and 2014 NSW Cup), a lifelong dream was finally realised for the 21-year-old. “I was nervous, overwhelmed… getting the call up was amazing. I’m still nervous thinking about it, I’m getting sweaty palms,” Campbell-Gillard told Extra Time. “When I got the opportunity to play I was overwhelmed. I even shed a little tear with mum when I told her. It was just very exciting because I wanted to make her proud, make myself proud and my family.” Campbell-Gillard heard of his selection in the first grade side a week before Penrith’s Round 1 side was officially released last Tuesday. He said he was hesitant to tell too many people. “I didn’t want to tell anyone in case something happened and I wasn’t picked, I’d look like an idiot,” he laughed.

Reagan Campbell-Gillard “But when everyone found out it was very exciting. I was getting messages and phone calls left, right and centre – that was making me even more nervous.” Like most rugby league players, making the NRL is a lifelong dream. It was that for Campbell-Gillard too. However, his path took a slightly different course during his teenage years. “I played juniors for five years until U10’s, stopped and started playing hockey

KEV’S KORNER

WITH KEVIN KINGSTON

O OUR JUNIOR SYSTEM IS TO BE ADMIRED

ver the last couple of years, there’s been a spotlight cast on the number of local juniors coming up through the ranks at the Panthers. Last year we saw Dallin WateneZelezniak make his NRL debut, and last weekend it was George Jennings and Reagan Campbell-Gillard who stepped out in the first grade jersey for the first time. The production line of talent in Sydney’s west is impressive and a lot of hard work goes into developing the next generation of superstars. From our junior league clubs and school rep teams, through to the Under 20’s, there is a huge team of people working behind the scenes in various roles, making sure these players develop the skills on and off the field, to be the best rugby league player they can be. On more than one occasion I’ve heard Gus Gould say that it’s our responsibility to develop our juniors, rather than recruit out of the area. We have a huge pool of talented kids in our junior rugby league competitions. Why look elsewhere, when the next Matt Moylan or Peter Wallace could be right in front of you? For a long time the Panthers have been strong in the Harold Mathews and SG Ball competitions, and our current NRL, NSW Cup and Holden Cup teams are playing well too. Kids everywhere are dying for their chance to pull on that black jersey. Players from other clubs want to play for the Panthers.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is a local junior who made his debut last year Parents want to send their kids to our development programs and managers want to send their top prospects to the club. Why? Because they have seen our development system in action, and they know it works.

If a young player from Sydney’s west has the drive, the ambition, the skills and the right attitude, the Panthers can take him all the way. Do you have a topic you’d like Kevin Kingston to tackle? Email news@westernweekender.com.au.

Something special is coming He left the high flying Manly Sea Eagles for a new chapter at Penrith, and Dean Whare has no regrets at all

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

D

ean Whare remembers signing with the Panthers right at the beginning of Phil Gould’s famous five-year plan. He would never admit publicly that he regretted leaving Manly during the height of their dominance but, looking back, he’s certainly glad he took the gamble. “It was definitely hard to leave a great club like Manly but as soon as I signed I knew I made the right decision,” the 25-year-old told Extra Time. “Even during that first year when we didn’t make the top eight, I knew we were going places and it’s paid off pretty well.” Since Whare arrived at the club in 2013, the Panthers have improved out of sight and are now one of the powerhouse clubs of the NRL. Whare’s game, too, has also improved exponentially over the years. After initially starting his first few games with the Panthers at fullback, Whare has grown to become one of the game’s leading centres both in the NRL and on an international level.

Dean Whare in action

“Since I’ve been here I haven’t missed a test for New Zealand, which I can probably credit to this team and myself preparing well,” Whare said. “My goal this year is the same every year and that’s to play consistent each week; I try not to play a bad game and back it up with another bad game.” One thing that Whare is finding refreshing about the Panthers of 2015 is the fact that there’s no longer negativity surrounding the club in the media. No longer are the Panthers easybeats or wooden spoon favourites – they are finally a team to be reckoned with. “It’s certainly a lot different from when I first came to the club in 2013 when people tipped us to come last,” he said. “There was definitely no expectations that year, we just played footy and we just missed out on the top eight.” Whare certainly doesn’t hold any grudges against those who bagged the Panthers, in fact he thanks them. “I think those people that put us down helped us to get to where we are now,” he said. “Not many people backed Gus’ five-year plan but it’s all worked out pretty well so far and I think we’re on the brink of something pretty amazing.”

BATHURST PAIN LINGERS FOR WALLACE

enrith captain Peter Wallace loves playing footy, he loves captaining the Panthers but no offence to the good people of Bathurst, he is not that keen to visit you this weekend. Wallace will make a reluctant return to Carrington Park to lead the Panthers out against the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday afternoon. Why reluctant? Well all week he’s been having flashbacks to July last year when his season cruelly came to an end after rupturing the ACL joint in his right knee during his team’s loss to the Sharks. It was heartbreaking at the time and made even harder as he was forced to watch his teammates enjoy a great ride for the rest of the season, going deep into the semi final series. If he could he’d rather not be going back to the ground so soon that gives him recurring nightmares. “Yeah I don’t have the fondest memories but it’s a new year and I’ve just got to push that aside,” Wallace said. Naturally the chances of lightning striking twice at the same place are very remote but the Panthers skipper is a little superstitious and even talking about it makes him more than a little uncomfortable. “I don’t want to jinx myself but everyone does injuries and has to go back to the place where they did it, so I’ll just have to deal with it, I should be right,” he said with a nervous half grin. Wallace is a calm leader for the completely rejuvenated Panthers and he

certainly deserves some good luck. Surely he has nothing to worry about and Carrington Park in Bathurst can quickly redeem itself and become a field of dreams instead of nightmares? WHY MEMBERSHIP IS SO IMPORTANT organisation of which the 16 clubs receive a NRL grant of circa $7 million. The balance is generated through Game Day, sponsorship and corporate partnerships as well as merchandise and membership revenues. The simple reality is that as our membership continues to grow, the increased revenue allows the Panthers to close the gap in terms of investments into resources that some other clubs enjoy. As an organisation we will continue to invest in the football department, which entails coaching personnel, strength and conditioning, sports science and medical, stadia and facilities all aimed at ensuring our players have all the support and resources to give them the best opportunity to be competitive year in, year out. With membership options starting at $30, whether you can get to a game or not, ask yourself the question, what value do you as a Panthers fan get out of the Panthers taking the field each week and is $30 within your budget to help make sure they continue to do so? See you all next week and good luck to the entire squad in Bathurst on Saturday.

question I often get asked is, how valuable is a football membership? Most fans would value membership by the position of their seat, the inclusions of the pack or the discounts and benefits that come as entitlements with the membership option they choose. These are all very important and make up a large portion of the decision making process when choosing to become a Panthers football member. Then there is the intrinsic value. That is the game day experience, the players looking into the crowd as they run on to the field, seeing the grandstands full of Panthers fans and colours. What this contributes to regarding the on-field performance cannot be underestimated. The players ride on the atmosphere and as a member sits on the edge of their seat, the players live every cheer as it is delivered. As we always say, every member is the 18th man, they should have a sense of belonging and inclusion in the overall journey that this organisation is on. The other perspective is the value to the club. It costs anywhere from $20 million to $35 million to run a professional NRL

I grew up in the district and idolised MG, Brandy and Freddy. What’s your best Panthers memory? Easily the 1991 premiership, the town was electric and it put us on the map. What’s your prized piece of Panthers memorabilia that you’d never sell? A Mark Geyer signed jersey. If the Panthers won the 2015 Grand Final, how would you react? I would take the week off work and party hard! Maybe even shed a tear. Would you ever get a Panthers tattoo and where would you get it? Yes, I would get the logo on my arm.

PANTHERS HEAD TO BATHURST IN POSITIVE FRAME OF MIND AFTER OPENING ROUND WIN

TITLE DEFENCE OFF TO A GREAT START, BUT BEARS POSE A SURPRISING THREAT THIS SATURDAY

The Penrith Panthers have got their Holden Cup season off to the best start possible with a convincing 30-12 win over the Canterbury Bulldogs last Sunday afternoon at Pepper Stadium. In front of a stunning crowd in soaring temperatures, the Panthers got the ball rolling in the 12th minute after hooker Sione Katoa threw a brilliant cut out pass to halfback Soni Luke, who shifted it to backrower Fairouz Elkander to open the scoring. Moments later, Panthers fullback Tyrone May put on a great individual display to put the home side up 12-0. Not long after, Penrith lock Dylan Fuad burst through the line at close range to extend the lead to 18-0. With five minutes to go before the break, the Panthers were hungry for more and this time it was centre Brent Naden who went over after slipping through a hole 20 metres out and scoring an absolute beauty. With the Panthers up 24-0 at the break, it was the Bulldogs who came out of the sheds firing in the second half. Penrith’s defence could only withstand so much and, in the 50th minute, the visitors finally got their just reward with a nice try to Josh Bergamin.

Penrith kicked off their title defence with a hard earned 26-20 victory over a fastfinishing Canterbury team that refused to give in at Pepper Stadium. The standout performer for the Panthers was without doubt Ben Murdoch-Masila whose late shift to the back row allowed the wrecking ball to terrorise the Bulldogs’ left edge defence in tandem with Waqa Blake, resulting in a try and setting up two others. The first half saw the lead shared between the two sides before a try to Will Smith on the stroke of half time in addition to earlier tries scored by Kieran Moss and former Souths rake Api Koroisau gave Penrith a slender 14-12 lead. Tries to Isaac John and Murdoch-Masila straight after play resumed saw Penrith open up its largest lead of the game at 26-12. To their credit, Canterbury hit back scoring two tries to set up a barnstorming finish which saw the Bulldogs break the line and threaten the Panthers’ tryline on numerous occasions, only to be denied by desperate Penrith defence to earn the two valuable competition points. This weekend sees Penrith travel to Carrington Park in Bathurst to take on Round 1 surprise packets, North Sydney Bears, with kick-off at 2.10pm. The Bears endured a horror 2014 season

Penrith in action last weekend With the Panthers enjoying their usual cat nap, it was time for the Dogs to strike again and they did just that through winger Joseph Burchell, who inched the scores closer 24-12. But the Panthers weren’t done with just yet after interchange player Maliko Filino ran right through the tired Bulldogs defence to score under the posts. Penrith’s emphatic 18-point win leaves them in sixth position after Round 1. They’ll play the Gold Coast Titans, who also won their opening round clash against the Wests Tigers, in Bathurst this Saturday morning.

finishing with the wooden spoon, yet, despite this, caused the upset of the round last week, defeating 2014 heavyweights Wentworthville away from home. Penrith have lost both Kieran Moss and Api Koroisau through injury. Eddie Aiono replaces Moss which sees Robert Jennings move into the centres and shifts Will Smith back to fullback. Liam Ayoub comes in as hooker, while Sam Anderson switches with Andy Saunders to start the game. Adam Docker has again been named to play in the NSW Cup side as he continues recovery from off-season surgery. The team is as follows: W Smith, Crichton, R Jennings, Blake, Aiono, John, Davis, Anderson, Ayoub, Latu, Sopoaga, Murdoch-Masila, Adam Docker. Bench: Saunders, Coates, FisherHarris, Akeripa, C Smith (one to be omitted). The North Sydney Bears will be anything but pushovers this weekend, having also named an exciting side including Stefano Taukafa, Aaron Gray, Scott Sorensen and Nathan Brown. In 2014, the Panthers won both games between the two clubs and the home side will be looking to continue that trend this Saturday and remain undefeated.

uintessentia l Australian song ‘My Island Home’ was never meant to be Christine Anu’s track. The cover song was originally recorded as a demo to showcase her singing skills to record labels in the hopes of earning the singer a place in an artist development program. “I got the cassette together and gave it to Mushroom Records and that became,

by default, my song,” Christine said, reflecting on the track that has become a part of ‘The Great Australian Songbook’. “It was only ever meant to be an example of my voice. It was never about that song. “‘My Island Home’ was what segued me and people just loved it and it really did, it started to roll ahead of me and I was always trying to catch up with this song. “I get it now, I absolutely get it now. I get the power of song. That, especially with a song like ‘My Island Home’, it’s bigger than me. It’s its own entity and it was always going to be this really amazing, powerful song.” 20 years on and the ARIA award winning singer is celebrating the anniversary of the release of her debut album ‘Stylin Up’ which featured hits including ‘Party’ and

“Make your mistakes and own it because it makes you strong... get up, turn the engine back on and just keep going”

‘My Island Home’. Most of the tracks on the album were composed by Christine and Melbourne musician David Bridie. Christine never expected the album to give her the platform on which to build a long term career in the music industry. “I never thought that it would get legs after a year,” she said. “I thought that I was just going to be a one hit [wonder], not even a hit but just a one album pony and now 20 years later the one song has got me into the room to meet people like Nelson Mandela, it’s got me to sing on stage with people that I never, ever thought I would, that I’d only ever seen names of in newspapers or watched on black and white television.” Audiences will get the chance to experience the beauty of Christine’s voice when she performs at The Joan’s 25th Anniversary Community Celebration Day on Saturday, March 28. The celebration is set to be a huge day for Penrith with a range of entertainment including performances by the Penrith Symphony Orchestra, roving circus talent, parkour by Team 9Lives, open drama and music classrooms, interactive displays for the kids and of course it wouldn’t be a true Aussie event without a sausage sizzle. As part of the ticketed events on the day, Christine will be joined on stage by the legendary Indigenous artist Archie Roach. “I think it’s a sign of coming of age to share a stage with somebody as significant as Archie,” Christine said. “I feel like... I can stop and take check, take stock at 20 years and go ‘I’ve actually accomplished enough and I am worthy to stand on stage next to this man that I revere. His talent, his stories, his life, his spirituality and of course his culture’.” Though Christine has performed to thousands of people both locally and internationally she admits she still gets nervous around music industry greats. “Even still now if there’s ever an opportunity that I do have to share the stage with name people I still get really nervous that I’m even going to be in the same building as them or that I’m going to share the stage with them,” she said. Reflecting back on her career over the last 20 years, Christine has clearly learnt many lessons along the way. The wisdom she shares gives an insight into what has kept her in the industry for over two decades. “If you walk in and you’re feeling pretty green and you’re very scared out of your mind because you’ve never done opera before and you don’t want to make a fool of yourself, it’s OK because people will look after you and you go away from your experiences just having learned so much and are better for it,” she said. “Make your mistakes and own it because it makes you strong. That’s my motto about life; you made a mistake, get over it,” she laughed. “Get up, turn the engine back on and then just keep going.” Christine Anu will be performing with Archie Roach at 2pm at The Joan’s Community Celebration Day on Saturday, March 28. Tickets to the concert are $50-$55. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.thejoan.com.au or call 4723 7600.

uring the warmer months there’s not many places in Penrith that are as inviting as the Nepean River, especially when you’re looking for a spot to spend a nice relaxing Sunday with family and friends. So it’s no surprise that it’s also the chosen location for an upcoming free music festival. On Sunday, March 15, Penrith Council will be putting on its annual Music By The River event to give audiences a taste of some of our most talented local singers and performers. This year’s lineup includes performances by ‘The Voice’ 2014 contestant Megan Longhurst, talented young performers from The Performance Academy, solo artist Andy Illinois, Penrith singer/songwriter Kristian Jackson,

musician David Agius, pop/R&B/hip hop group NeWest and singer Brittany Gleeson. The event will also include a range of tempting food stalls with plenty of delicious cuisine on offer. Music, food, friends, family and the beauty of the Nepean River, what more

could you ask for on a lazy autumn Sunday. Music By The River will be on at Tench Reserve on Sunday, March 15 from 11am to 4pm. This is a free event. For more information visit www. penrithcity.nsw.gov.au or contact 4732 7652.

zHarvest Founder and CEO Ronni Kahn will be guest speaker at the City of Plenty Fundraising dinner at Penrith Regional Gallery on Monday, March 23. The aim of the night is to raise $10,000 to provide 20,000 meals to the disadvantaged community. Guests will indulge in a delicious three course meal created by chef Travis Harvey, who worked as a food advisor on Peter Kuruvita’s Mexican Fiesta, and Cafe at Lewers chef Steve Grant. The dinner is part of the City of Plenty exhibit at the Penrith Regional Gallery, an evolving art installation created from donated non-perishable food and household consumables which will be passed on to OzHarvest and Penrith Community Kitchen at the conclusion of the exhibit. Tickets are $125 which includes a three course meal and wine. For bookings, call 4723 7600.

ittle theatre goers will have the chance to see a beautiful and charming children’s theatre production when ‘White’ comes to The Joan this March. This unique mini play comes all the way from Scotland and is the brainchild of the acclaimed Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, which is widely regarded as one of the world’s best children’s theatre companies. The company has earned many awards including Best Production for Children and Young People at the Theatre Awards in the UK. ‘White’ sees the show’s creator Andy Manley join forces with Ian Cameron to take on the parts of Cotton and Wrinkle. These two friends live in a white world in a clearing in the woods where they look after a host of birdhouses and their eggs.

All is not as it seems though and soon this very white world starts to show hints of colour. At just 35 minutes long ‘White’ is the perfect way to introduce your toddler to the magical world of theatre.

‘White’ will be on at The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, March 28 at 9.30am, 11.30am and 1.30pm and Sunday, March 29 at 9.30am and 11.30am. The show is suitable for children

T

he beautiful Blue Mountains town of Springwood is getting ready to celebrate Springwood Foundation Day on Saturday, March 14. This year’s celebrations will be extra special as 2015 marks 200 years since the naming of the town by Governor Macquarie. The day will kick off at 9am and will include the Opening Ceremony and Welcome to Country at 10.30am followed by Volunteer of the Year Awards. There will be plenty of entertainment to check out on stages set up around town, with performances by folk and country music band The Bushwackers, along with a host of local talent.

One of the highlights of Foundation Day is the Grand Parade, which brings the 1800’s to life with horse drawn wagons and participants dressed as historic characters including Governor Macquarie and Mrs Macquarie. The parade will also feature descendants of Blaxland, Lawson, Wentworth and Cox. For those who are up to the challenge there’s the Springwood 400m dash which welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. The young, and young at heart, will be kept amused with rides including dodgems, giant slide, sideshow alley and much more. If you’re a history buff then for a gold coin donation you can explore the town on an historical walking tour run by the Springwood Historical Society. So why not grab the family and head up to the Mountains this Saturday.

CINEMA Focus

Rated MA // STEPHEN BISSET While this romantic caper flick – buoyed by a palpable chemistry between the two leads Will Smith and Australian Margot Robbie (capitalising well on her turn in Scorcese’s ‘Wolf of Wall Street’) – does tend to run out of puff in the third act, there is enough going on in the previous two to make for quite a pleasant distraction. Smith stars as professional conman Nicky Spurgeon who is picked up in a Manhattan bar by the charismatic Jess Barrett (Robbie) before the romantic encounter is revealed to be a scam in which Barrett plans to steal from Spurgeon. Impressed by her moxie, Spurgeon hires her as in intern and gives her the low-down on the art of grifting.

Inevitably, the pair develop a romantic relationship before Spurgeon cuts her off after a mammoth scam involving the Super Bowl. Three years later, Barrett, now an accomplished femme fatale, shows up unexpectedly in Buenos Aires where Spurgeon is working his latest high-stakes scam, but she throws his plans into disarray. ‘Focus’ is not a career-best for Smith by any stretch, but it is a welcome return to form after a run of lacklustre fare (‘After Earth’ et al) while Robbie threatens to steal almost every scene she has with Smith. It’s definitely one to watch, but don’t expect a masterpiece.

Freedom Ride // KATE REID One of Australia’s most loved country stars is back with his ninth studio album ‘Freedom Ride’. The multi award winning artist has become an integral part of the country music scene over the last two decades and by the sounds of it there’s much more to come from this talented musician. ‘Freedom Ride’ covers plenty of terrain from the uplifting feel good track ‘Take A Walk in My Country’, to pure country songs like ‘Something About Trains’ along with ballads like the beautiful ‘Tennessee Rain’. There’s also a good helping of guitar on rock inspired tracks like ‘Drive It’. Country music is well known for being a story teller’s genre and there is no better example of this than the standout track ‘Black Mountain’. The album also features Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes who makes an appearance on ‘Two Weeks On, Two Weeks Off’ and singer-songwriter Paul Kelly on title track ‘Freedom Ride’.

3.5 STARS

Based on a true story, ‘Pride’ follows a group of gay activists from London who lend their support to the National Union of Mineworkers as they go on strike during the summer of 1984. After experiencing resistance from the union, who appear to be embarrassed by the help offered, the group decides to reach out to the miners in a small mining village in Wales. The two groups are an unlikely match,

and initially the reception is rather frosty. But as the group refuses to stop fundraising the miners start to warm to their unexpected allies. This is one of those true story films that leaves you feeling hopeful about the state of the world. What the two unlikely allies achieve together is nothing short of inspiring, a great testament to people power and the many similarities that exist between

people who, on face value, may seem very different. Bill Nighy does a great job playing a very un-Bill Nighy character, the reserved and softly spoken Welshman Cliff and Imelda Staunton is charming as the outspoken Hefina. This is a lovely little feel good film that’s definitely worth checking out.

WINE LIST

Cherry on top

T

he recent opening of yet another cellar door in the NSW Southern Highlands, this one at Cherry Tree Hill Wines at Sutton Forest, is further indication of the growth of this small, impressive and relatively new winemaking region – and further reason to visit its now 18 cellar doors showing-off their exceptional cool-climate wines. Gabi Lorentz and his family established a farm at Sutton Forest after arriving from Hungary in the 1980s, planted grapes in 2000 and have not looked back. And their small but attention-grabbing portfolio of Cherry Tree Hill wines (that are made for them by respected local makers Anton and Mark Balog) have garnered a nice wall-load of awards from outings both to Australian and international wine shows. One that particularly contributed towards these is a 2006 Riesling that’s still available and has aged beautifully with its still-fresh citrus, herbaceous and candied fruit characters, fine acidity and a wonderfully long and crisp finish. Certainly worth the $45 price tag to put on the table with pan-fried trout and oven-baked Kipfler potatoes when family or good friends come around. One to note: Rymill, that recently celebrated 40 years since its first vines were planted at Coonawarra in 1974, have released a 2013 Rymill Yearling Cabernet Sauvignon that’s as frisky as the one-year-old thoroughbred the label takes its name from, with lively, fruity aromas that have hints of cocoa and peppermint as well, and a lovely palate of sweet ripe plums, blackcurrants, subtle spice and balanced acidity.

Penrith Golf Club Friday, March 6

Getting into the swing of things On Friday, March 6 golfers headed out to Penrith Golf Club for the Luke Priddis Foundation 2015 Charity Golf Day. The foundation was set up by Luke and Holly Priddis in 2006 to help raise funds to support kids living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Luke is a former first grade NRL player who won the Clive Churchill Medal while playing for Penrith in 2003. The event was a four ball ambrose competition which allowed players of all abilities to join forces for a fun day on the green. Along with 18 holes of golf there was also a BBQ breakfast, buffet lunch and plenty of competitions, auctions and prizes up for grabs. It was a great day of golf for a very worthy cause. The event will be back next year.

A

ussie recording artist Damien Leith is set to release his new album ‘Songs From Ireland’ later this month. The ‘Australian Idol’ alumni has won over the hearts of people across the country with hits including the #1 ARIA single ‘Night of My Life’. Since appearing on the popular talent show, the Irishborn singer has released seven albums including his most recent release, 2013’s ‘Chapter Seven’. Damien is also a published author with two novels under his belt. The new album, ‘Songs From Ireland’, sees Damien celebrate his Irish heritage through the magic of song. “The main thing for me with this album is that I created something that was authentically Irish,” he said. “It has all the traditional elements: the fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes and bodhran, all of those great sounds that make up traditional Irish music. “I’ve tried to be as real as possible, whilst also being true to my style as well.” Whether you fell in love with Damien Leith on ‘Australian Idol’ or discovered his music later on, there’s no doubt you’ll love this beautiful new release from a singer who has well and truly established himself in the industry. New wave of hearing aids is having a major impact on people’s lives s technology races ahead to enrich every part of our lives, hearing aids have also advanced to almost superhuman proportions. A new hearing aid has been developed that is so powerful that for the first time, wearers can understand speech in demanding environments better than people with normal hearing. Emma Scanlan, Principal Audiologist, Australian Hearing, said the new Binax hearing aids are considered the next wave of all-encompassing technology. “This is an exciting development and another way in which we can support those with hearing loss,” she said.

“The feedback from our clients is unprecedented, and the results have been resounding.” NSW resident Jack Baseley (pictured), has already witnessed the benefits of the new hearing aids. “What I noticed with the new hearing aids is that I’m hearing with greater precision, they are so clear. They are also much more effective in cutting out background noise and I’m finding my hearing aids far less disruptive and not causing me to miss out on things as much,” he said. The new devices are available now at Australian Hearing centres nationwide.

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

This week sees Rams pulled in opposing directions. The Uranus/Pluto square activates your selfish side and accentuates your ‘take-no-prisoners’ approach, and you’ll feel compelled to remove the dead wood from your life (in the form of a person, possession, job or outdated belief).

TAURUS

Moore

HOROSCOPES

Bulls – are you bored to bits? This week’s stars urge you to stretch yourself in dynamic new directions. Keep what’s working in your life but don’t be afraid to discard people, possessions or projects that have passed their used-by date. And don’t underestimate the importance of networking.

GEMINI

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

This week’s Uranus/Pluto square compels you to examine your life in forensic detail; keep what’s working, and change what isn’t. The trick is knowing which is which! It particularly fires up your finance zone so don’t let a child, teenager or friend talk you into buying something that you really don’t need.

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

You’re at your fastidious best (and fussy worst) as the planets push your perfectionist button. By all means do things well, but don’t be too obsessive in the process. This week’s stars are intense and unpredictable so pace yourself, and resist the urge to be too regimented. Things are in a state of flux.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

You long to change something in your life – but it never seems to be the ‘right’ time. Stop being stubborn; digging your hooves in; and making ridiculous excuses. Grab the Goat by the horns and initiate overdue changes (especially on the home front) … before Uranus and Pluto step in and do it for you!

LIBRA

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

With the Solar Eclipse (plus Mercury and Neptune) stirring up your life-direction zone, are you feeling confused about the future? It’s time to apply for a promotion; look for employment; take on a second job; start a course of study; accept a volunteer position or completely change vocation.

CANCER

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Problems you had back in December surface again, courtesy of the Uranus/ Pluto square. You think you’re dealing with them but are you being diplomatic or just plain indecisive? It’s time to be clear and proactive in your dealings with others, and don’t waste time pussyfooting around.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Unpredictable Uranus sends disruptions in your direction – and, at the same time, powerful Pluto demands that you let go of old patterns of behaviour and find a totally new template. So the only certainty at the moment is change. Letting finances take their own course seems tempting but keep an eye on them.

SCORPIO

Avoid the temptation to be a drama queen and fly off the handle this week. If you try to control or manipulate others, then you’re in for an intense and tumultuous time. For some attached Lions, your lacklustre love life gets a welcome boost as the Solar Eclipse stimulates your sensuality zone.

For many exasperated Crabs, a close relationship remains stuck in a time-warp where it’s difficult for both of you to change. Difficult – but not impossible. A complete shift in perspective is required. Are you looking for love, and demoralised by the dating game? Draw on your inner reserves of strength.

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Uranus and Pluto are pushing you to break down old patterns of behaviour and forge a fabulous new course. But it won’t happen without practical problems, uncomfortable disruptions and emotional pain. Transformation is the name of the game as you leave the familiar behind, and venture into uncharted territory.

Despite the Reserve Bank of Australia leaving official interest rates on hold last week, we’re still announcing cuts across a range of fixed rate home loans at BOQ. According to BOQ CEO and Managing Director Jon Sutton, long-term swap rates that drive funding for fixed rate lending have improved, allowing BOQ to cut its fixed rate home loans. “There are some very sharp fixed rate home loans in the market which will be enticing for customers that want the certainty of knowing what their mortgage repay-

ments will be over the next few years,” he said. The following reduced fixed home loan rates are effective from March 5, 2015: • 3 Years Fixed has been reduced by 20 basis points to 4.29 per cent • 5 Years fixed has been reduced by 10 basis points to 4.59 per cent This joins our suite of other fixed rate home loans with rates as follows: • 1 year fixed is at a rate of 4.65 per cent • 2 years fixed is at a rate of 4.59 per cent • 4 years fixed is at a rate of 4.59 per cent You should definitely have a chat to your bank manager when it comes to your home loan. With interest rates at low levels, it’s a great time to chat with your bank manager and try to get the best possible deal.

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Good nutrition 2. Staying active 3. Positive mind A daily ‘must do’? Stay hydrated, drink plenty of filtered water. Biggest health/fitness misconception? The biggest health misconception I believe is that fat is bad. Saturated fats are essential for our bodies although they are painted as the enemy. The real enemy is sugar, sugar leads to obesity and disease, not fat. In fact low fat products are actually worse for our bodies as once the fat is taken out, the sugar is added to replace the taste.

I had someone ask me this week how to stay motivated. It’s a common scenario, they started an all out fitness kick and go flat out twice a day for a week but by the second week are doing less than they ever have. I think it’s important to be realistic about your goals and new commitments. It’s been said for many years ‘the best way to get someone to do something is make them want to do it’. The same is true for your fitness program. I’ve seen people force themselves onto a treadmill at 6am in

How to stay motivated and like exercise

the morning because they feel they have to exercise, then they say I just don’t like exercise. What they don’t like is looking at the treadmill clock ticking down running on the spot for an hour. I agree with them. In over 20 years of training I have probably spent two hours on a treadmill ever! I

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? The biggest benefit to being fit and

don’t like them. Give me an outdoor run any day. Organise a game of tennis, buy a cheap kayak. There are a hundred ways to get active. The other important thing is you have to work up to it, at first your new resolve to get fit is very fragile, even though you’re feeling positive this time you’re going to do it! It has no habit behind it, you might have bad associations to exercise already, you have already failed before and maybe others around you are not very encouraging because it draws attention to their own lack of activity. Then you’re getting sore from doing too much, it’s very easy to lose that initial resolve. You have to be very careful to keep it alive then get it growing. Compare it to making a campfire. You don’t light a small match then put a few huge tree trunks on top of it. You have to feed it appropriately, small easy burning things that get the flame even bigger. Only when it’s ready each time do you put a bit more on. Same for exercise, guide yourself by how you feel, better to do something you like and increase it when you feel ready. Think of ways to make it a long term enjoyable change.

healthy is feeling good and having loads of energy. I also like that my children can see that both my husband and I are fit and healthy and that looking after yourself and staying active is a way of life that they choose to follow. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I like a variety of exercise, it’s easy to get bored if you’re not mixing things up. I attend a boot camp once a week as well as a few HIIT classes in a gym. I also enjoy using free weights and working on strength training at home one to two times a week. How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? Staying motivated is easy for me as my husband competes in triathlons and trains five times a week, seeing him working so hard motivates me. I also train with a friend a few times a week as well as do group classes so I also find that this helps a lot. Freestyle – anything else you want to say? Choosing a healthier lifestyle is exactly that, it’s a lifestyle. There are a lot of fad diets out there that once they are stopped, the benefits are lost if there were any. Eating the right foods for our bodies and living an active life is much more beneficial in the long run because although it may take time to reach your goals, they will be permanent. Best part is you will feel fantastic while you’re doing it.

How does fitness feature in your life? Growing up I never had to worry about my weight as I was always in pretty good shape. Once I had my second son I really struggled to lose the weight afterwards. I started going to the gym and working out outdoors and after a while realised that I was actually enjoying it. I loved how I was feeling and started to notice my weight going down. Further down the track I found myself really focusing on my nutrition and exercise and really enjoying it. My passion grew and grew so much that I decided to start a health and fitness course where I would be able to help other people while doing what I love.

McMillan PET HEALTH

Seizures in pets can be a frightening situation for both you and your pet. A seizure is an uncontrolled electrical discharge from the brain that can cause twitches or shaking that can last from less than a minute to more than several minutes. Some pets may also have other symptoms during a seizure such as drooling or involuntary urinating. Some dogs will also be dazed or confused before or after a seizure. What causes a seizure? There are many different causes of seizures in pets.

Seizures can be a problem for pets

Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital

Problems that cause seizures can originate from the brain (such as epilepsy) or originate from outside the brain; these include problems such as low blood sugar or liver problems. Sometimes, even a toxin such as a toxic plant can cause a seizure. To try and determine the cause of the seizure, a thorough history and blood tests are generally required. Some animals may go on to

have more advanced tests like MRI scans. It is very important to know what to do if your pet has a seizure as this will prevent injury to both yourself and your pet. If your pet is near something that could hurt them, such as a piece of furniture, then move it away. It is also a good idea to place something soft under the dog such as a pillow or blanket. It is essential that you stay away from your pet’s mouth and head as most animals that have seizures are unconscious and can accidentally bite. Always contact your veterinarian immediately and follow their advice. Can seizures be treated? As there are many causes for seizures, treatment depends on the underlying cause. Most young animals that have seizures have ‘epilepsy’. This can be treated successfully with a combination of anti-seizure medications. These medications do not cure the disease, but help your pet have a long and happy life with minimal seizures. Seizures can be a confronting experience for a pet owner, particularly the first time, and obviously you feel somewhat helpless. But the key is to arm yourself with as much information as possible. Talk to your vet.

It is sad how some people think “God stuff” is about rules and regulations. It is sad how some people think that God is about restrictions and limits and boundaries, about being hard and placing heavy burdens on people. It is sad how some people reckon they don’t need God. How they think you can live without him. Nothing could be further from the truth! The Bible declares that Jesus came to bring life and not just life as we think about it, but real life, eternal life, life in all its richness, vitality and fullness.

What a tragedy that people think they can live without knowing this Jesus who came so you could live life to the full! There are many great people in our world, people who are clever and wise, with great abilities, but here’s the thing; who among them can give you eternal life? Who among them can rescue you from death? And who among us doesn’t need this rescue!

Jesus came to rescue people from death: the horrible curse of death which is over all people and which squeezes the life out of us, robbing us of all that is good. So often we treat God with neglect, ignoring him, questioning God’s judgement, but Jesus’ death on the cross offers us forgiveness and a fresh start with God. JEWELLERY

I know we are only mid way through March but I wanted to give you a little heads up on what we have going on in store in the lead up to April. The year already seems to be flying by and it will be here before we know it. April is Diamond month at York Jewellers and over the next week or two I’m happy to say that we will have a great selection of beautiful Passion8 Diamond jewellery back in store. The collection will consist of stunning engagement rings, earrings, pendants and dress rings,

season, so it is worth purchasing something that will last. • Boots. Have you ever heard of blisters, crippling sore feet and cold toes? These are all things that come as a result of cheap boots. Whether you want a knee-high pair, this season’s over the knee trend or a pair of ankle boots, be prepared to fork out the dollars because this is something you don’t want to scrimp on. • Jeans. Another thing that I won’t be spending less than $100 on this season are jeans. I have a slight addiction to denim so I will definitely be buying a new pair this year and in this case, it is well worth spending a little extra for a pair that really fits and doesn’t lose their shape after half an hour of wear. I’ll be steering clear of the ripped, distressed denim this season and opting for something more timeless. SAVE • Tops. I won’t be purchasing a single long sleeved top this season, as I have one or two in every colour that I purchased last year. • Stockings. Don’t bother spending a lot on stockings because if you’re like me, it is likely they’ll tear in no time anyway. • Trackies. These are probably the most important item that you will wear all season but there is no need to over spend on a pair of branded ones when they are similar quality to a $10 pair from a variety store. Men’s trackies are better than women’s so I always shop in their department. See you next week!

so, making for a luxurious, bright sparkle. As we hold the quality of our workmanship to high esteem we see it fit to offer a selection of the world’s most beautifully cut diamonds for our clients to have set into their custom pieces, along with designs that we have available in store. On another note – we will also be offering a great deal for York Jewellers clients using GE Money. More on that next week, but if you can’t wait until then feel free to pop in and we can fill you in on the details.

It’s all about diamonds at York

ave you ever noticed how expensive it is to update your autumn/ winter wardrobe each year? Honestly it is not something that I have ever put too much thought into, as updating my wardrobe is something that I see as a necessity, but this year I have really noticed the dollars. It might be that I have more expensive tastes this year but it sure feels as though my favourite stores are ramping up the prices. I guess it makes sense though, rather than buying bikinis, shorts and singlets we are buying woollen overcoats, jeans and boots – yep, they’re all much more expensive items than we would buy in summer. But the real question is: Is it worth maxing out the credit card on quality winter wear or can we afford to do it on the cheap? For this question, I don’t think there is a real answer, in fact I think it is important to do both – strategically decide what to spend on and what to save on. Take a look back into your collection of last year’s clothing, I am sure there are a few items that you can keep in the round for this year, as winter wear clothing like a tan trench coat or a comfy knit just never go out of fashion. But there will be a few staples that need replacing and here is how I would do it. SPEND • Overcoat. This is one thing that I would never spend less than $100 or $200 on because your comfort in the cold weather is entirely dependant on a decent overcoat. In addition, it is one of the items that you are most likely to wear and re-wear almost every day of the

olden has announced the introduction of a new, ground-breaking Lifetime Capped Price Service (CPS) program – the largest of its kind in Australia. The Lifetime CPS program applies to every Holden ever built since the first Holden 48-215 in 1948, ensuring that all Holden owners clearly understand the maximum price that they can expect to pay at every scheduled service. Holden’s Executive Director of Aftersales, Michael Filazzola, said the unique Lifetime CPS program represents Holden’s commitment to providing customers a positive experience throughout their ownership experience, no matter when they bought their new, or used, Holden. “Our all-encompassing Lifetime Capped Price Servicing program is an incredible program and demonstrates yet again our commitment to our customers. Holden owners from as far back as 1948 can enjoy total peace of mind and service price transparency,” he said. “Our lifetime CPS means that once customers buy a Holden, of any age, new or used, we have them covered.” The easy-to-use Lifetime CPS calculator found on the Holden website, clearly displays the maximum service price of any Holden vehicle, ensuring that customers will not pay more than expected when visiting their Holden Dealer for a service.

@natetaylor87

hat a difference a year makes. For a long time the Penrith Baseball Club were the joke of the NSW State Baseball League. Now, they’re the kings. Last Sunday the Penrith Panthers first grade team did what would’ve been called the unimaginable 12 months ago when they won the 2014/15 NSW State Baseball League premiership. When former Baulkham Hills coach Shane Summersford took over the squad last winter, it was in dire need of help. Not only did the side need some star power added to its roster but it needed direction and a vision, something that

W

Summersford admits wasn’t easy to achieve. “I think the club structure was there, it was the lack of knowledge. Through my experience at other clubs over the years, I could tell Penrith wasn’t quite ready,” he said. “When I joined the club I knew what I needed to do to get it done. I got good players that didn’t cost us anything because of my relationship with them – they wanted to play for me.” Summersford gifted Penrith some of the best baseball talent on offer including former New York Mets pitcher Dae-Sung Koo; Australian catcher Guy Edmonds; American minor league players Rick Schwartz and Jacob Younis; US college pitchers Travis McDonald and Chris Jolly;

and Australian Schoolboy representative Dean Frew. “Once I saw those names on paper, I thought ‘wow, we could give this thing a shake this year’,” Summersford said. “However, we weren’t a shoo-in to make the playoffs, we just scraped in. But once we got there, I was pretty confident we’d take it out.” Up against Summersford’s former club Baulkham Hills in the three-game decider, the Panthers got off to a red hot start winning the first game at Blacktown International Sportspark 6-2. However, Penrith’s good start came undone fast during the side’s second match when their top pitchers went down with injuries. Baulkham Hills took full advantage and won the game 12-3.

With the premiership on the line last Sunday afternoon, Penrith and Baulkham Hills were at their defensive best. However, some incredible pitching by Koo and longtime Panther Aaron Sookee proved too much to handle for Baulkham Hills with Penrith winning by the smallest of margins, 2-0, to seal the title. Looking back on his first season at the club, Summersford said it was certainly a season he’ll never forget. “This was the first time a lot of things happened at the club this year,” Summersford said. “It was the first time the club hit first place on the ladder, the first time they got to the playoffs and first time they won a Grand Final. Plus, it was certainly good beating my old club.”

Transplant Games

West scores another big sporting event Sydney International Regatta Centre to host events as part of Australian Transplant Games next year NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

rgan transplant recipients and living donors from Australia and abroad will gather in western Sydney next year for the 2016 Australian Transplant Games. NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner joined recipients, living donors, donor families and Penrith Panthers players at Pepper Stadium last week to mark the return of the biennial event to Sydney. “For one week in September next year, western Sydney will play host to over 1000 recipients and donors from across Australia as well as 10 other countries,” Ms Skinner said. “The NSW Government has committed $350,000 to next year’s Games, which will vividly demonstrate that organ and tissue donation not only saves lives but allows recipients to live their lives to the full.” The 2016 Australian Transplant Games will be held at western Sydney venues including the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith and Blacktown International Sportspark. Participants will compete in over 20 sports, from high-exertion events such as athletics and swimming to less strenuous

Photo: Richard Bulley Photography competitions including ten pin bowling and petanque, which is a form of boules. Sports Minister and Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres, said western Sydney has outstanding sporting facilities to host the Games.

“This unique sporting event celebrates the talents and accomplishments of organ recipients and acknowledges that they are able to live active, successful lives because of someone else’s generosity,” he said.

One person who can’t wait to take part in next year’s Australian Transplant Games is 11-year-old St Clair resident Tom Wells. At three months of age the sports-mad local was diagnosed with a liver condition known as Biliary Atresia, and by nine-months-old underwent his first liver transplant. At age nine, Tom underwent a second liver transplant due to nearly a decade worth of complications from the first. “Tom’s a very active boy, who plays baseball for Mackillop in Kingswood and also participates in fun runs,” his father Steve said. “Tom will take part in anything but unfortunately he can’t play one of his all-time favourite sports, rugby league, because he has to be careful with any sort of contact.” In 2012, Tom competed in the Australian Transplant Games which was held in Newcastle. There he picked up a gold medal after finishing first in a 5km run. “These Games are great for kids because they’re not the odd kids out, everyone’s in the same boat,” Mr Wells said. For more information on the Australian Transplant Games, visit www.australiantransplantgames.com.

Penrith’s long-term rowing deal Rowing Regatta to be held at Sydney International Regatta Centre until 2017 NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

orld-class rowing will remain in Penrith well into the future after the NSW Government announced it had secured the Sydney International Rowing Regatta for the next three years. Minister for Sport and Recreation and Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said the local area will continue to host the major international event until 2017, thanks to the State Government’s tourism and major events agency Destination NSW. “This is fantastic news for western Sydney, with competitors and spectators travelling from interstate and overseas to take part in the Regatta, staying at local hotels, dining at our restaurants and visiting attractions,” he said. “Last year the event attracted over 8000 visitors, with a total visitor expenditure of over $9.8 million. With similar results expected this year, the Sydney International Rowing Regatta will provide a boost to the western Sydney visitor economy once again.” This year’s Sydney International Rowing Regatta will be held from Monday, March 23 until Sunday, March 29 and will feature

Rowing Australia Chairman, Rob Scott, said he was delighted to be able to utilise the world-class facility of the Sydney International Regatta Centre for the next three years. “This announcement represents the continued support from the NSW Govern-

ment for Rowing Australia, which hosted the inaugural 2013 Sydney International Rowing Regatta and also last year’s event,” he said. “We look forward to welcoming the Australian Rowing community to Penrith from later this month and right through to 2017.” Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase, said the result demonstrates the

commitment to securing a great line-up of sporting events for the state. “The Sydney International Rowing Regatta is an important feature in what is a packed 2015 events calendar for NSW, including the ICC Cricket World Cup, Netball World Cup, Touch Football World Cup, Bledisloe Cup and many more,” she said. The inverted ladder. That’s how it looks, that’s how it feels to a lot of fans in Western Sydney. Struggling at the bottom, the Champions League triumph feels like years not months ago for the Wanderers. Those travel exertions caught up with them? Who knows. It remains a mystery. As does the other end of the ladder. The two teams who know exactly what an airport and a long journey is, lead the way. Perth Glory, Wellington Phoenix. Unfashionable picks at the start of the season, both are riding the success of A grade, A-League recruitment. Start with Perth. Experience rules Kenny Lowe’s way of thinking. Hard heads, know-how in games, and the right type of character have blended into a formidable opponent. The thoughts of leading by fluke went out a long time ago in this 15 week stay at the top. Take last Saturday night in Melbourne as the perfect example of why they are so hard to beat. They crowded Victory’s creative players and worked their collective

backsides off for the collective. Thankless tasks completed, a bit of luck from the linesman for their goal – which was along the lines of Thomas Jefferson’s famous quote about getting luckier when working harder – they got away from there with a point. No longer is the travel factor a soft excuse for Glory. And so it goes for Wellington. At the season launch, coach Ernie Merrick and captain Andrew Durante both made it perfectly clear – going through customs was not going to be the sign to crumble this season for the Nix. So often in the past they’ve been dynamic one week in the Kiwi capital, then anaemic the next in Australia. A different class of player has helped. They arguably have the two buys of the season in Socceroos forward Nathan Burns and Dutch midfielder Roly Bonevacia. Excuses are gone. Excitement is here. They are the best team in the competition to watch, with clear intent on getting the ball as quickly as possible to their best attacking options.

WANT TO KEEP YOUR HOUSE

THIS SUMMER?

It’s been an unhappy run for the Wanderers of late, so we thought we’d get to know you a little better off the field. First off, as an athlete what is your diet like and are you allowed to splurge from time to time? These days football is a lot more scrutinised in every aspect and I suppose it comes down to the individual. I know there are players in the team that have a very strict diet to keep their weight down. I do take care of it to a certain extent but, at the same time, I’m not someone that sticks to it too strictly and watches every calorie that goes in. I do splurge a little bit and enjoy the odd take away here and there but I try and eat as healthy as possible. I suppose I’m blessed with a very good metabolism which makes a lot of my teammates jealous. I know Nikolai Topor-Stanley can just look at unhealthy food and put on weight, but that’s not me (laughs). We can imagine the Red and Black Bloc’s chants are always stuck in your head but what sort of music do you like to listen to? I’m not too fussed with music, I like everything to be honest. I like R&B, rock – I can’t really say there’s one specific style of music I like. I was actually recently at the Foo Fighters concert and they’ve always been one of my favourites. I did grow up with a lot of rock music when I was young and probably do have a soft spot for that still. We know you’re a bit of a rev head, what makes you such a ‘car guy’? I’ve always grown up with cars. My mate and I used to rebuild cars and motorbikes. I enjoy most things mechanical but cars and bikes, for me, were definitely two hobbies of mine when I was young. I just bought a new Jeep Grand Cherokee not long ago, I like having something nice to drive. I’ve

been talking about getting a Jeep for quite a while now and I actually drove Harry Kewell’s one and that thing was an absolute beast, so I decided to go out and get one myself. When you’re sitting at home and turn on the TV do you just watch football or are you into other sports as well? I like sport in general, but I don’t actually come home and crave to watch football. I love the game or when something big and important comes up, but I’m not the sort of person who wakes up at five in the morning to watch an English Premier League game. I watch A-League every chance I get because I’m part of that competition and I like to see who I’m up against. I am keen on what’s happening in other football leagues but I don’t watch game after game. I follow my Dragons in rugby league but I also like cricket and motor sports like Formula 1 and Moto GP. You’ve been playing professionally for near-on two decades, do you remember your first non-football job? My first ‘proper’ job was working for a custom broker who dealt in imports and exports. I had that job for a few years before I had to make the decision of taking my football career seriously or not. I think I definitely made the right decision. Young players, these days, probably don’t get what was involved back in my day when I first started. Back in the old NSL we had training two to three times per week, so I had a 9-5 job every day in the city. I remember doing that sprint from Surry Hills to Central Station to catch the train on time so I could get to the car so I could get to training with about 15 minutes to spare. Eventually that took its toll, going from the city to Fairfield to train with Marconi, and I decided to stop working there to start focusing on football.

The Retired Police were the ones to enjoy the facilities in our Top of The Track Sky Lounge last Thursday night. It was a good night of racing with the punters finishing best on the night. Itz Platinum Plus ($2.60) driven by Bruce Birch, after a few near misses, was able to break the ice and give supporters something to take home in race one. Steve Turnbull produced the first of a winning double in the second when he was able to get the short priced Jedi Mind ($1.30) home for an easy win. Got the Chocies ($3.20) driven by Josh Willick was all the rage in the third and he lived up to his name. Smack Dab Shannon ($3.60) gave an all the way exhibition winning the fourth. Driver Blake Fitzpatrick rated him well with even quarters and was never in danger.

Beejay Emdee ($4.10) driven by Leigh Sutton took out the fifth with maybe a little luck. Rainbow Fighter was first out and led until coming to the bell he drifted wide and this gave Beejay Emdee an inside run to lead with a lap to go. Maintaining that lead he was able to hold off Loves The Show who came from three back on the inside and Itz the Promised One running on from the rear. Got The Scoop ($3.40) scooped the pool in the sixth beating favourite Missed By Red and third placegetter Gallery Girl with a brilliant late finishing run. Other winners on the night were Pixies Parlour ($2.30) driven by Steve Turnbull in the seventh and the lucky last going to Jacknice ($2.00) driven by Nathan Giles. See you at the Paceway on Thursday night for a great night of racing.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side played in two hard fought games during last weekend’s double header round. In their first clash, Penrith were outclassed by the Central Coast Crusaders 103-93. Ben Kearins was best for the Panthers scoring 22 points and three assists. In their second game, Penrith and Manly Warringah played an exciting contest with scores all locked up after four quarters which sent the game into overtime. There, the Panthers just had that little bit extra fight in them to defeat the Eagles 93-92. Louis Brandt was Penrith’s top player with 31 points and six boards. Meanwhile, Penrith’s women’s team also enjoyed a strong win over Manly Warringah 67-55. Tahlia Tupaea showed her class in this one, topscoring with 18 points and nine boards. Both sides will take on the Sutherland Sharks this weekend. BASKETBALL: The National Basketball League announced last week that Penrith basketballer and Sydney Kings star Angus Brandt had won the 2015 Rookie of the Year Award. Brandt received the accolade after a promising start with the Kings, averaging 7.4 points and four rebounds per game while shooting at nearly 50 per cent from the field over 21 games.

Brandt’s first season wasn’t entirely smooth sailing, suffering a knee injury on New Year’s Eve in Round 13 which ruled him out for seven matches, but was fortunately found fit to play before the end of the season. CRICKET: After enjoying a weekend off to rest up, Penrith will take on the seventh-placed Sydney University this Saturday at Howell Oval to cement their place in next week’s finals. Penrith, who currently sit in fifth in the Sydney Grade Competition, will play Sydney Uni in a One Day match beginning at 10am. RUGBY LEAGUE: Round 4 of the junior rugby league representative season kicked off last weekend with some mixed results for both the Penrith Panthers and Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS) sides. In the Harold Matthews competition, Penrith lost to the Canterbury Bulldogs 28-22 while WSAS were also defeated by the Wests Tigers 36-8 In the SG Ball competition, Penrith hammered the Bulldogs 48-12 while WSAS lost to the Tigers 38-18.

Dramatic fall from grace: Western Sydney’s horror A-League campaign @natetaylor87

anderers coach Tony Popovic has finally offered up some valid reasons as to why his side aren’t firing this season whilst, at the same time, conceding their finals chances are all but over. Speaking after Western Sydney’s 1-0 loss to Brisbane last Sunday evening, Popovic said it was “unrealistic” to think that his side would make the final six with eight games remaining but affirmed that he wouldn’t let his players give up on trying. With the Wanderers also in the midst of another AFC Champions League campaign, Popovic said it would be disrespectful to give up on the A-League competition and just focus on the prestigious Asian tournament. “It would be disrespectful to the A-League, the other teams and our fans if we just said ‘let’s do our best to get through a really tough group and neglect the A-League’,” he said. “We’ll take it one game at a time and try and win every game we play.” Making it more difficult for the Wanderers this season is the fact that they have been crippled with injuries, which was further

compounded this week with the news that experienced striker Mark Bridge could miss extended time with a groin injury. “We’ve got a lot of players that are new to the club and a lot of players out with long term injuries,” Popovic said. “Physically we’re struggling. The effort’s
