FUNDING CUTS The future of the Environmental Defenders Office of NSW is in doubt after the State Government slashed funds for the legal centre, which provides advice to communities across the state on environmental law issues. With no gurantee that funding will continue beyond March 2013, Executive Director, Jeff Smith, is concerned the centre will be forced to close.

arrickville is renowned for its artisitc community, but arts students are concerned that without State Government funding for Fine Arts courses at TAFE, fewer budding artists will be given the opportunity to develop their talents. Earlier this year the State Government announced that the courses would no longer be subsidised, which is expected to increase the cost for students and potentially make the courses unviable.

Dulwich Hill’s Penny Ryan, who is three years into a four-year advanced fi ne arts diploma specialising in print making at Meadowbank TAFE, said that students want clarity as to what the courses will cost next year. “The government believes TAFE should be ‘user pays’, yet TAFE has always been about access,” Ms Ryan said. “It’s November and they still haven’t announced the actual prices for January. We think that the prices are going to be completely prohibitive, we think it’s going to be $8,000 to $10,000 to do a diploma.” Education Minister Andrew Piccoli said that

while “we know that any increases in fees are hard on households”, from 2013, TAFE NSW will be applying a commercial fee to students who enrol in a fi ne arts course. “Th is will apply to courses such as visual arts, ceramics and sculpture as they are low jobs growth areas,” Mr Piccoli said. Marrickville MP, Carmel Tebutt, said charging commercial rates for fi ne arts students would price those courses beyond the reach of ordinary people. “These cuts will decimate our vocational education system and make no sense,”Ms Tebbutt said.

Why can’t they knock on the neighbour’s door and get a lolly? Of course you can’t let them roam the streets in the middle of the night or do nasty tricks. I’m talking about young kids making costumes and pumpkin-shaped lolly baskets and going next door with mum or dad in tow. I remember as a kid my two sisters, brothers and I would go down the street collecting what we thought was a massive haul of lollies and thinking it was absolutely fabulous. Mum also enjoyed it – chatting to the neighbours and other parents we

Th rowing eggs at people and houses – not necessarily because they didn’t get a treat – but I guess because they thought they were funny. Which they weren’t. One year a young girl did get an egg thrown at her and part of the shell got stuck in her eye. Not only stupid but dangerous. But I will also point out it was around midnight and there wasn’t a parent in sight. Obviously I don’t condone the “trick” side of Halloween but if it’s done safely and respectively I don’t see the problem with it. Over the years it’s become even simpler to indicate if you want to

t’s quite ironic that last week Kyle Sandilands had the number one E-book in the country on iTunes, yet he’s constantly nominated as the mosthated man in Australia in various polls. It’s no secret that one half of the country loves Kyle and the other, well, doesn’t. The only Kyle they know is the one portrayed in the media, as some outlets put it – “a fat slob”. Kyle is one of Australia’s most successful and highest rating on-air personalities. His career has been riddled with scandal and controversy, yet his breakfast radio show on 2Day FM consistently sits at number one. Now, in Scandalands, readers have a chance to get to know the real Kyle, from his difficult childhood in Brisbane, his strange adolescence impersonating police officers, through to his steely determination to make it in radio. Funny, frank and very revealing, Kyle’s memoirs are a page-turning insight into one of Australia’s infamous media figures. The Weekender has five copies of Scandalands to give away. For your chance to win one, send an envelope with your name, phone number and suburb on the back to Weekender Scandalands Competition, Suite 2, 4244 Abel St, Jamisontown 2750. ewtown opera singer Keara Donohoe, a rising star of Australian opera, will perform in the Seven Sopranos’ Joyeaux Noel Christmas concert at the Art Gallery of NSW on November 30 and December 2. Ms Donohoe, a former music and drama student of Newtown High School for the Performing Arts, will join Tarita Botsman-Carbo, Deborah Rogers, Stephanie Acraman, Katie Stenzel, Michaela Leisk, Naomi Johns and conductor Simon Kenway to deliver festive duets and ensemble pieces. “Opera’s defi nitely one of the fun ones,” said Ms Donohoe, who has been singing since the age of seven and studied at Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music. “There’s a lot of drama you can use, not only with your voice, but with the characters you’re playing. It’s like license to go glam and make it big, which is fun to do.” Relatively young within the opera scene, Ms Donohoe, now 30, gained her fi rst gig with Opera Australia at 27 and hasn’t looked back. If YES, then we would love to hear from you! Inner west schools’ cleaning hours are set to be reduced.

A real mess: Budget cuts to affect cleaning at schools arrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt believes local schools will be dirtier due to the education budget cuts made by the State Government. She said according to internal Department of Education documents, cuts to cleaning hours will affect Marrickville West Public School, with seven hours cut per week; Fort Street High School, with over 12 hours cut per week; Dulwich High School, with five hours cut per week and Bridge Road School, with over two hours cut per week.

“Inner West school students are going to be forced to learn in dirty classrooms because of the O’Farrell Government’s disgraceful $1.7 billion cut to education funding in NSW,” she said. But NSW Education Minister Andrew Piccoli said the new arrangement for school cleaning staff was signed by Verity Firth when she was Education Minister in early 2011 and that efficiency improvements are being introduced. “The government is committed to ensuring that our students and teachers are provided with facilities that are clean and well kept,” Mr Piccoli said.

First stage of train station renovations complete VANESSA WATSON

rejuvenated Newtown train station was opened for business on Monday, with the new lift, covered walkway, upgraded toilet facilities and concourse area attracting praise from commuters. The upgrades form the fi rst stage of a two-part overhaul, which will be completed under the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program. Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian, said the Government is committed to improving accessibility to meet the needs of people with a disability and that the changes at Newtown, as well as the ongoing Sydenham upgrades, would make train travel more safe and convenient for customers. “The upgrade is part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program. The program commits more than $770 million over four years to deliver accessible, modern, secure and integrated transport infrastructure where it is needed most,” Ms Berejiklian said. “We are delivering transport infrastructure upgrades where it is needed most and Sydenham and Newtown are both key stations on the network with high patronage.” Erskineville resident, Steve Doherty, who uses a wheelchair, described the Newtown upgrades as “fantastic”. Mr Doherty, 44, who travels to Parramatta for work, said he will occasionally use the new station now that he is able to, but that he bought a car several years ago to avoid the “battle” of changing train lines in a wheelchair. “It was easier to drive a modified car than to battle a train. Now the new station’s here, I’ve got the option. I haven’t used it yet, but I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Forced entry: Duo stole wallet before fleeing Police are investigating a home invasion and robbery in Lewisham about 10pm on October 25. When a 46-year-old man answered a knock at the door of his Victoria Street unit, a man and woman forced their way into the unit before threatening the man and demanding he hand over cash. When he refused, the pair searched the unit for money and property before fleeing with the man’s wallet.

Steve Doherty will make use of the new Newtown station.

A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said stage two of the Newtown upgrade will be completed in early 2013 and will include refurbishment of the existing booking office and the reconfiguration of the old station’s steps as emergency stairs. The approximate cost of the Newtown Station upgrade is $35 million.

A husband and wife will face court after being charged with heroin supply by detectives from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad (MEOCS). Officers attended a unit block in Marrickville Road, Marrickville, about 6.45pm on Monday and in the basement car park, arrested a 44-year-old man and his 40-year-old wife and seized 42 heroin deals. Police confi scated two vehicles – a Porsche and a Mercedes – believed to be proceeds of crime. Police will allege the couple has been supplying streetlevel heroin throughout Sydney, including 129 separate deals during a nine-day period. It will be further alleged the couple’s disabled teenage son was present at most of these transactions. They have been charged with a number of drug supply related offences.

Legal centre at risk: Funding cuts could force closure MARRICKVILLE LIBRARY BOOK SALE

VANESSA WATSON

he future of the Environmental Defenders Office of NSW is in doubt after State Government funds for the community legal centre were slashed. Marrickville resident and EDO Executive Director, Jeff Smith, is predicting mass redundancies or total closure if funds are not restored. Mr Smith said the EDO, which has been operating for more than 25 years assists the NSW community with matters in environmental law such as providing an environmental law hotline and community workshops across NSW. They was notified of the cuts on October 19 with a letter stating government funding administered by the Law Society through the Public Purpose Fund (PPF) would be significantly reduced from January 1. Mr Smith said the letter offered no guarantee of PPF funds continuing due to the state’s ‘economic climate’ and competition for state funds. “It’s an incredibly stressful time for us due to the enormous uncertainty,” Mr Smith said. The centre receives about $1.7 million through the PPF as well as $200,000 directly from the State Government, with PPF funding only guaranteed until March. “If the situation remains unchanged, the services we provide to the community will be lost, we will have to lay off most of our staff – including myself – early next year, and dramatically scale back or shut down our community

services.” Of the centre’s 25 employees, about 8 live in the inner west or central Sydney. Mr Smith said EDO community workshops cover a range of topics, for example educating farmers on their land rights and responsibilities in regards to coal-seam gas exploration on their properties. “Those kind of things would be lost, but also the important role that we play as lawyers, in getting rid of cases that don’t have any merit – it spares the courts time... We play an important fi ltering role in the administration of justice,” Mr Smith said. To save the centre, the EDO has written to every government minister asking for support and also to its supporters asking them to ask their MPs to support the legal centre. “Th is is not something we would normally do and it’s not something we would do lightly, but we can’t sit quietly any longer.” A spokeswoman for the Attorney General Greg Smith SC, said the Department of Attorney General and Justice is reviewing the current funding principles used to grant funding for legal assistance services, including community legal services. “No decision has been made. Th is review will look at the best way of delivering legal services, so that organisations which act for the disadvantaged do not miss out on funding.” She said community legal centres receive most of their funding from the Public Purpose Fund administered by the Law Society of NSW.

Enviro-friendly focus of Festival garners support VANESSA WATSON

ewtown Festival stalls will be plastic water bottle-free for the fi rst time this year. Instead, organisers are urging punters to bring their own bottles for free water refi lls on the day. Festival co-directors Sue Anderson and Cathy Wills described the shift as not only an environmental initiative to reduce plastic waste but a celebration of the access enjoyed by Australians to clean water supplies. “We feel very passionately about the fact that so many people in our world don’t have access to water. We can drink our tap water, that’s an absolute gift,” Ms Wills said. “Water coming out of your tap in Sydney costs something like $1.30 to $2.80 for 1,000 litres.” Ms Wills said the decision not to sell diposable plastic water bottles has been in discussion at the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre for years but that 2012 felt like the right time to initiate the change. “It’s a fairly logisitical shift and we felt this year was the right year to do it... We’ve got support – we’ve got Sydney Water on site, they’re going to be able to dispense sufficient water for the festival.” Ms Wills, of Erskineville, said she remembers when bottled water became a bit of a trend and she’d spot people walking down King Street with branded water and wonder why. “I think we’ve been subjected to some really clever marketing.” Asked what fi rst prompted the plastic free idea, Ms Wills said Lisa Burns of the NNC had wanted to bring the idea online for several years to limit the plastic waste going into our environment. “So much oil is needed to produce plastic bottles, then the fuel for transport,” she said.

N

Sue Anderson and Cathy Wills.

“We’re constantly reviewing our sustainability footprint of the festival – the festival has a long history of making good, sustainable decisions. Our traders use biodegradable, compostible food packaging.” A spokeswoman said Sydney Water is proud to support the 2012 Newtown Festival. “With no packaging, tap reduces the burden on the environment and, at less than a quarter of a cent per litre, it’s great for the wallet. We have been spreading this message for a while now and are proud to be involved with a festival that encourages drinking tap water,” the spokeswoman said.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT National Recycling Week Before you put your TV on the side of the road, take note: Marrickville Council’s Household Chemical Cleanout and e-Waste disposal day is on Saturday, November 10 at Marrickville Council Works Depot from 9am to 3.30pm. The free event, to be held just before the start of National Recycling Week, is an opportunity for Marrickville households to recycle old analogue televisions and other ageing electronic products. Household chemicals and electronic waste will be accepted. Old paints, gas bottles, fluorescent tubes, batteries, motor oils, household cleaners, computers, TVs, cameras, and printers can also be dropped off at the Chemical and e-Waste Cleanout. Th is year alone, residents have dropped off 95 tonnes of eWaste and almost 63 tonnes of chemicals, which would otherwise go to landfi ll. Marrickville Mayor Victor Macri said he was proud that Marrickville is a community moving towards zero waste. Residents are reminded to pack unwanted chemicals in secure containers and transport them carefully to prevent spillage. Entry to the depot is via Bolton St.

From November 23 to 24 at the Entertainment Centre, the Year 10 student of Newtown High School of the Performing Arts will sing, dance and act as a featured artist for her fourth consecutive year at the Schools Spectacular. “I can’t wait,” Kelsi said of the upcoming creative showcase, which will involve about 3,600 students from 400 schools across the state. “Th is year, the theme is ‘Our Time’, and it’s very exciting. We’ve got acrobatics, fi res and explosions, it’s a great experience.” She said the annual initiative is a great way for young performers to gain confidence on the stage and with technical aspects of performance like working with microphones and sound systems. For Miss Boyden, the stage has become a bit of a mainstay. At six, she performed in her fi rst musical as Gretel in a production of ‘The Sound of Music’ in her Newcastle hometown. At 12, she scored the role of Debbie Wilkinson in the musical ‘Billy Elliot’, for which she moved to Sydney. When asked where she sees herself in five or 10 years, Kelsi said she’d like to work on a musical overseas, either in New York or London’s West End. “That’s the ultimate goal.” Kelsi Boyden is a triple threat.

We have got rose petal jams, earl grey jams, a beautiful caramel spread and hand-made mueslis by Whisk and Pin. “We have a really large range of French and Australian cheeses. That’s the focus of the shop.” From further afield, they stock an array of tempting teas from Marriage Freres, one of Europe’s fi nest tea houses. And as a step towards sustainability, the Durands are also selling olive oil and vinegar to customers – bottle free. Customers can bring their own bottles, fi ll up on olive oil and vinegar and help reduce waste going to landfi ll while still attaining the highest culinary quality. Born in Burgundy, Mr Durand said his love of food began in the French kitchen of his mother, who cooked traditional dishes like coq au vin. Janette, who has a background in hospitality and teaching, has picked up the culinary cudgel and regularly creates French-style pâtés and terrines using free range and organic products. For Christmas, The Larder will stock beautiful and edible gifts, like made-toorder Christmas puddings from Puddling Lane, Newcastle, that arrive wrapped in silk cloth. But get in quick becuase last year Marrickville locals couldn’t get enough!

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

When Mercury goes retrograde the outlook is generally disrupted. Th is time, the areas of concern are romance, children and creativity. Love and romance are all very well but the practicalities of your relationship needs to be looked at too. You may decide that you need to save up a bit more money before you can splurge on the kind of things you want. If you’re a parent then prepare for some annoying issues with your children.

GEMINI

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Your ruling planet Mercury is on a retrograde course until November 27 and the circumstances that are occurring in your home and love life are so muddled at the moment that you may feel temporarily overwhelmed. Though your mood is rather carefree, the same can’t be said for either your partner or your family. You will feel totally out of place as though you don’t connect with anyone in your circle and will need to make a real effort to remain positive.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Work of all kinds could prove frustrating during the next three weeks, especially if you are engaged in a long and detailed task. There will also be problematic issues to do with cars and public transport, therefore before you set out on your journey check that your petrol tank is full and be certain to allow extra time for hold-ups. Electrical equipment will be acting strangely, it may be necessary to call in professional tradespeople.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

You need to prepare for some unexpected expenses during the next few weeks and it is going to be imperative that you get a grip on your money situation. You may have been spending too much on those plastic cards and now is the time to put the brakes on any overspending and get your fi nances into order. Communications with your lover are going to be difficult as you may try to sort out a number of practical or fi nancial problems.

by Francis A Bevan

www.francisbevan.com

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

There will be a number of issues that you will need to sort out in regards to certain friendships in your life. Be very careful of allowing misunderstandings to mar a perfectly good association. If somebody does something or says something you don’t understand ask them to explain themselves rather than just reacting to their behaviour. You’re going to be terribly restless and will need to get away from the daily routine and grind of life.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

You will have the strongest desire to achieve a long held ambition, but if you are truly realistic in your assessment, you’d know that this is not the right time to attempt it. When it comes to dealing with difficult issues in your career you must use a measure of tact and diplomacy in order to get what you want out of others. Th is is the ideal time to go back over your old skills and to fi nd a new outlet for them or to train up in something new.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Mercury is retrograde in your sign making you feel confused and unable to concentrate properly. You are likely to make errors of all kinds so it is important that you to double check all paperwork, or important tasks at work before submitting them. Be certain to read the small print of all legal documents before signing them. Complications, delays and hold ups are most likely so be patient especially when dealing with computers or travelling.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Your fi nancial affairs have reached a point where you have to make a decision. Do you carry on in the old, rather dreary, ways of making and spending your cash or will you look at the realities and make sensible decisions. Take a great deal of care when dealing with important or official paperwork issues, as your concentration may lapse, be certain to read everything twice before signing. You are also likely to be feeling tired and in need of extra rest.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

A lot of old issues are going to be raising their heads in your personal relationships. However, you must be careful not to over react to what other people say or do, without fi rst thinking about the long term outcome of your actions. People you haven’t seen for ages will suddenly reappear in your life and you will enjoy their tales and company. You will also fi nd yourself watching old romantic movies that you haven’t indulged in for some time.

ALL GLAZED POTS

Mercury retrograde is likely to cause everything at work to come to a dead stop, opportunities for advancement will now be delayed. Letters, emails, phone calls and professional contacts are either mistimed or full of evasion. Old, irritating health concerns may return and problems with day to day household duties will arise. Therefore you must take steps to look after your energy, catch up on lost sleep and be careful of stupid mistakes.

Mercury retrograde is in a negative position with Jupiter creating a very tense outlook and putting your nerves on edge. Alot of intense feelings that have been buried away in some memory vault will come bubbling to the surface. If you’re wise, you’ll avoid challenges and indulge in some relaxation. Remember to use patience when dealing with others as relationship difficulties will erupt into a furious quarrel if you don’t exercise self-control!

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

The planets are encouraging you to focus on your work, health and duties. You must take steps to look after your energy, so go on a diet, catch up on lost sleep and put a stop to all those bad habits. Jobs that you’ve been meaning to do for ages can now be dealt with and put behind you. Be careful at work, as stupid mistakes are likely through carelessness. Also household items may need to be repaired so watch out for those unexpected costs.

KEEPING FIT

by Susan Garrad

by David Stein

Lose weight before Christmas Q. I want to lose five kilograms before Christmas without going on a diet. Is this achievable? A. Yes, it certainly is. Start by correcting some of those ‘bad’ eating habits: • Don’t eat while you are doing other activities for example watching TV. Eat only at the table, not at the fridge or while standing. • Don’t eat quickly. If you eat slowly it gives your mind enough time to register that you are full. Make sure you cut your food into smaller pieces and try to stop loading your fork until the previous mouthful is fi nished. • Don’t buy ‘junk’, high calorie foods. Always take a list when you go shopping to prevent impulse buying. • Buy snack foods in the smallest package. The larger the size, the more you are likely to eat and drink. For example if you like to treat yourself to potato chips, buy small packs not the ‘jumbo’ size. • Plan meals in advance. Th is will defi nitely help to prevent consumption of high calorie junk food. • Plan a strategy to avoid overeating at social events. Have a large nutritious snack before going out, so you are not as hungry and tempted to overeat. • Do not use smoking as a method of reducing appetite. By following these guidelines, you will

xercise isn’t just for the young, its ideal for keeping anyone young at heart. You can do more than just hope for a strong, mobile body as you age. It is possible to turn back the aging clock. The myth is that as we grow older we get much weaker and suffer more aches and pains. We’ve been told that losing muscle and gaining fat are just part of the natural aging process. The fact is that many of the symptoms of old age are really the symptoms of inactivity, of using our muscles less. Muscle weakness, bone loss and sluggish metabolism are changes that accompany aging but are not solely caused by it. Use it or lose it. No doubt you have heard this phrase before. I can’t think of a better one to describe what happens to our bodies as we age. By increasing your strength and flexibility, you can slow and possibly reverse many of the symptoms associated with aging. Strength training is the primary weapon against aging. They still haven’t found the fountain of youth, but this is close. There’s a lot of research saying that strength training is a potent age eraser. More and more fitness experts are recommending strength training for health reasons, for women as well as men, older adults as well as younger adults. Strength training is extremely

important in combating the age-related declines in muscle mass, bone density and metabolism. It is an effective way to increase muscle strength and to shed unwanted inches. Strength training also helps to decrease back pain, reduce arthritic discomfort, and help prevent or manage some diabetic symptoms. At Tufts University, researchers found that strength training can add bone density. Prior to this research, it was thought that women might be able to slow their bone loss, but not increase their bone density. Th is new study shows that strength training at any age can actually add bone, not just slow its loss. It can decrease arthritic pain or improve diabetes symptoms and lots of other benefits like mobility and being able to do tasks that require a bit of muscle or coordination. So whatever your age get a bit of resistance training in and watch your new body transform!

last few years. Expect the latest season of ‘Idol’ featuring new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban to do great things for Ten.

Channel Ten has announced it will launch five new Aussie dramas in 2013 including the comedic drama ‘Wonderland’ and the epic Australian story ‘Batavia’. Also new are ‘Mr and Mrs Murder’ with Shaun Micallef and Kat Stewart, ‘Reef Doctors’ with Lisa McCune, and ‘Secret & Lies: The Track’. Other engaging new local shows on Ten next year include the live, interactive series ‘Shock of the Now’ and Hamish Macdonald’s ‘The Truth Is’. Ten also has its hands on tennis’ Hopman Cup and the rugby union featuring the Wallabies. One of their biggest coups is regaining the rights to ‘American Idol’ which FOX8 has had the

SBS has also released their plans for 2013 and it’s set to be a great year for the multi-cultural broadcaster. Amongst the highlights include a new drama called ‘Better Man’ starring Bryan Brown, David Wenham and Claudia Karvan. Hilarious comedy ‘Housos’ is back for another season. There will be a new season of ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ which will feature some well-known Aussies including Rove McManus, Michael Caton and Adam Hills. Some interesting docos are on the cards such as ‘Once Upon A Time In Punchbowl’ and ‘Cronulla Riots: The Day That Shocked A Nation’. Old favourites such as ‘Dateline’, ‘Insight’, ‘RockWiz’,

ovember is the final month of the official ratings season, meaning there’s now only four more weeks before our favourite shows say “bye byes”…

‘Eurovision’, ‘Living Black’ and ‘Mad Men’ will all return. Channel Seven are now on the hunt for contestants for ‘The Mole: Culture Clash’. If your gut feeling is always right, if you think you can spot a “Mole” at one hundred paces, if you think you are a great judge of character, you could be the one who outsmarts The Mole. Perhaps you can sabotage without suspicion and fly under the radar – maybe you’d make the perfect Mole. Either way you need to apply to have a shot at winning a huge pot of cash. Applications close November 11. To apply visit www.go.mycastingnet.com/Apply/ Show/TheMole. Season two of the Tim Allen comedy ‘Last Man Standing’ will be fast-tracked to FOX8 this Sunday, November 4 at 7pm.

Another show returning to Arena is ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’. The third season will begin on Tuesday, November 6 at 8.30pm. Lastly the ‘Big Bang Theory’ will return to its 7pm timeslot on Nine when ‘Big Brother’ wraps up this Wednesday. One show I’m loving at the moment is Sci-Fi factual series ‘Hollywood Treasure’ (pictured). The show is a mix between ‘Pawn Stars’ and ‘American Pickers’ and follows Joe Maddalena and his team as they navigate their way through the intricate world of collecting showbiz and pop culture memorabilia. Episodes have featured items such the vintage ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ car, a Wonka bar from ‘Willy Wonka’ and other unforgettable props and costumes from some of the world’s most famous movies. The show is on every Sunday on the Sci-Fi channel at 8pm.

Cherry Poppin’ Daddies Calling all the hip cats and cool kittens, it’s time to get your dancing shoes on and your hips shaking as the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies return this Saturday, November 3 at The Vanguard. After gracing our shores back in 2011 with sold out shows across the country, the Daddies promised to bring their dancing frenzy moves back to Australia once again – and they’ve held good on that promise. There’ll be spinning, skanking and maybe even a little striptease – after all, this is a band out to entertain. For bookings call 9557 9409.

Monsieur Camembert Triple ARIA Award-winning Monsieur Camember will perform as a 10-piece Gypsy supergroup to celebrate the music of Harry Nilsson – not only presenting selections from their forthcoming Nilsson show and album, but also selections from Monsieur Camembert’s Leonard Cohen show, and other Camembert classics. Don’t miss them this Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4 at the Camelot Lounge. For bookings visit www.camelotlounge.wordpress.com.

Pixar in Concert From the ‘Toy Story’ trilogy to ‘The Incredibles’ and ‘Up’, Pixar has forever impacted filmmaking and given audiences of all ages some of the most beloved characters in cinematic history. Now, for the first time in Australia, the Sydney Symphony presents Pixar in Concert, with visually stunning clips and memorable scores from each of Pixar’s movies, including their latest release, ‘Brave’, performed live by the Sydney Symphony. Pixar in Concert plays at the Sydney Opera House this Saturday, November 3 at 2pm and 8pm. For bookings visit www.sydneyoperahouse. com.

ild women of the inner west of all shapes and sizes are invited to join the roller derby resurgence led by the creation of the Inner West Roller Derby League, and to attend it’s 2013 season fundraiser this month. Founded in February 2012, the league stands at 42 members after two intake sessions, with the next intake scheduled for early 2013. On November 8, the IWRDL will host a fundraising party at Broadway’s Australian Youth Hotel from 7pm, with a gold coin entry fee. Derby coach and one of the league’s three founding members, vice president Stacey Short, 26, of Newtown, is encouraging women interested in the popular, fastgrowing, and high impact contact sport to get in touch and get involved. “We’ve grown so fast,” Ms Short said. “We are a brand new league, so we are still working on the general training of roller derby. They’ve got to learn the rules and strategies.” In late September, the league took part in its fi rst bouts against the Hawkesbury league, HARD, and later the Canberra Roller

“Our aims into next year are to train as much and to play as much as possible.” In December, the league will stage an invite-only bout for friends and family, with girls split into two teams on the day. Ms Short, an artistic skater who competes at the state and national levels, said the rise of roller derby was also encouraging because it has boosted interest in roller skating generally.
