Despite Australia recovering from its biggest economic downturn in decades thanks to COVID19, there are expectations of a spending spree in the lead up to Christmas 2020.

Statistics collated by consumer research company Roy Morgan with the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) show Australians intend to spend 2.8 per cent more than the $52.9 billion in retail expenditure they shelled out during the pre- COVID 2019 festive season.

declines in the two states most impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, Victoria and NSW. Coles has also reported it is gearing up for record Christmas sales as international travel bans force one million more Australians to holiday at home this year.

The Morgan research found the largest percentage increase is predicted for the food sector, with pre- Christmas spending forecast to grow by 10 per cent from a year ago to over $23.8 billion.
