HOW DID THE RBA GET ITS MESSAGE SO WRONG?

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and its Governor Dr Philip Lowe have borne much of the blame for the woes of mortgage holders who have weathered a 3.5 per cent rise in official interest rates over the past 12 months.

And the RBA kicked an own goal when one of its board members, Ian Harper, admitted they “did a terrible job” in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, balancing its dual mandate of being responsible for the stability of the Australian financial system and keeping inflation within its target of two to three per cent.

“Both of those things led us to be extremely cautious,” he said.

“With hindsight, excessively cautious in how we set interest rates during that time.”

Meanwhile, deputy governor Michele Bullock conceded the RBA’s crucial interest rate messaging as it lowered the cash rate to 0.1 per cent during the pandemic was “garbled”.

For most of 2021, the RBA repeatedly stated: “The Board will not increase the cash

rate until actual inflation is sustainably within the two to three per cent target range. For this to occur, wages growth will have to be materially higher than it is currently. This will require significant gains in employment and a return to a tight labour market. The Board does not expect these conditions to be met until 2024 at the earliest.”

Then, in May 2022, with inflation surging, mainly due to the global economic impact of Russia invading Ukraine, the RBA announced the first official interest rate hike since 2010, lifting the cash rate by 25 basis points to 0.35 per cent. It is now 3.6 per cent.

Ms Bullock also admitted the RBA had got it wrong: “I will accept … that the message got garbled. People latch on to a date … and even now that we are raising interest rates, they still want us to put a date on when we are going to stop doing it.”

Whether the RBA lifts rates again next month will depend on the March quarterly inflation figures released on Tuesday.

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH ON PRESTON STREET WAS BUILT IN 1908 AND OPENED ON DECEMBER 13, 1908 AND SERVED A GROWING NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON THE FARMS OF SOUTH PENRITH. THE CHURCH WAS SOLD IN 1947 AND BECAME A PRIVATE RESIDENCE.

THE WORKINGMENS’ COTTAGES ON MULGOA ROAD INCLUDED A PAIR OF SEMI-DETACHED COTTAGES AND AN ADJACENT DETACHED COTTAGE, BUILT OF BRICK.
