COVER STORY

If you thought Hairspray couldn’t get any bigger...

G

et ready to step back in time to 1960’s Baltimore when the hit Broadway musical ‘Hairspray’ comes to Penrith again.

SHANNON COCHRANE @shanc_91

It’s quite nice to work with somebody new, it gives a new dynamic to the little group

atmosphere of the United States after she befriends African-American dancers and sees the discrimination and segregation they face. According to Jones, the enduring popularity of ‘Hairspray’ can be attributed to the uplifting plot and anti-discrimination themes, which are still relevant regardless of context. “It’s such a fun show and I guess the storyline is a fun storyline where good triumphs,” he said. “Everyone likes the underdog to win... Tracy is the underdog, the larger girl who gets on TV and wins the boy. “There are some big issues in there to do with racism and segregation that are told in a musical way.” Jones, who dons a woman’s bodysuit to play Tracy’s overweight, homebody mother Edna, said that the show is inspirational because each of the characters go on an emotional journey to reach a new level of enlightenment. “Everyone in the production overcomes obstacles and goes on a journey,” he said. “My character, Edna, hasn’t left her house since she became quite large and during the show she gets inspiration and becomes happy with who she is. “The lead character, Tracy, is trying to reshape the world and tries to bring about integration. There are some quite strong themes in the production, which are still around to this day.” Revisiting a musical that they had already performed before gave the company an opportunity to tweak the show and improve any problems they had

encountered during the first run. In the lead-up to the play, the cast workshopped the show extensively with almost all of the performers contributing feedback and suggestions on what they felt would make ‘Hairspray’ even better for their Penrith audience. “It’s a more dynamic show and things that didn’t really work last time, we were able to change and fix and revise,” Jones said. The addition of some new blood into the cast, including a fresh actor to play the character of Wilbur, also gave Penrith Musical Comedy Company’s production a different, exciting atmosphere. “It’s quite nice to work with somebody new, it gives a new dynamic to the little group,” Jones said. With a majority of actors in ‘Hairspray’ coming from the local area, the production is an excellent opportunity for people to support arts and culture in the community. “The thing is, theatre in Sydney is quite expensive to go to in the city... our tickets are $35 for adults and it’s supporting the local community,” Jones said. “It’s a vibrant show and just a feel-good show where you can just come and forget about your worries for two and a half hours.” Penrith Musical Comedy Company will be performing ‘Hairspray’ at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from Friday, May 9 until Saturday, May 17. Tickets range from $20-$35. For bookings or more information, call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

Penrith Musical Comedy Company will be returning ‘Hairspray’ to the stage after its first season of the production in 2012 included sell-out shows and rave reactions from audiences. The musical, which is adapted from the popular Broadway hit, will be showing at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from Friday, May 9 through until Sunday, May 17 and is sure to impress local audiences even more the second time around. Grant Jones, President of the Penrith Musical Comedy Company, said that the theatre group had decided to rehash ‘Hairspray’ due to the success of the show and added that many of the original performers were back. “We did the show two years ago, in 2012, to sell out crowds so we thought, let’s bring it back. Most of the original cast are back, but we’ve got some new people as well,” he said. The 2014 cast features a mix of original and fresh performers, with Rachael Thompson returning to the lead role of Tracy Turnblad, accompanied by Jones as her mother Edna, Jeff Cefai as Wilbur, Joel Kellett as Link and Rachel Crane as Penny Pingleton. Other main cast roles are filled by Zoe Carroll, who plays the beautiful but snobby Amber, Mel Roberts as Motormouth Maybelle, Laura Hodge as Prudy Pingleton, Nathan Hodge as Corny Collins and Anne Cefai as Velma. Beyond a touching storyline, the amazing retro costumes designed by Bek Want and created with the help of Kathy Briggs and Leonie Jeffery will make audience members believe they’ve travelled to 1960’s mainland America. With glamorous retro costumes, insanely catchy songs and a heart-warming yet funny plotline, ‘Hairspray’ has been reincarnated many times for audiences. It first began as a comedy film in 1988, was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2002 and again hit screens in a 2007 film remake. Set in the early 1960’s, ‘Hairspray’ tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a ‘pleasantly plump’ but kind-hearted teenager who feels self-conscious about her weight but longs to appear on her favourite local TV show ‘The Corny Collins Show’ and dance with dreamy celebrity Link Larkin. Despite her size and the bullying she faces, Tracy pursues her dream and in the process gets caught up in the changing

Collaboration set to be very popular Exploring both classical and contemporary music, the Penrith Symphony Orchestra returns to the Joan for its second concert of the season

The concert continues the tradition of showcasing Australia’s fine emerging talents

BEE GEE SHOW MOTHERS DAY May 11th, 3.30pm

“Choral collaborations such as this are an important element in our season. Judging by last year’s sell-out performance of ‘Carmina Burana’, they’re extremely popular with our audiences,” he said. “The concert also continues the orchestra’s tradition of showcasing some of Australia’s finest emerging artists. “Soprano Zoe Drummond, mezzosoprano Charlotte Merz, tenor Damian Arnold and bass Daniel Nicholson are all from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and leading lights in the up-and-coming generation of opera and concert soloists.” The program also features another Mozart work, the beautiful ‘Clarinet Concert’, which will feature soloist Frank Celata, who is the associate principal clarinet with the Sydney Symphony. It opens with Haydn’s ‘Symphony No. 94’, which is also known as the ‘Surprise Symphony’, and will be conducted by the orchestra’s artistic director Paul Terracini. These classical sounds will be contrasted with the premiere of a brand new Australian work that was commissioned by Penrith Symphony Orchestra. 25-year-old Daniel Clive McCallum, who currently lives in Los Angeles and works as a film composer and orchestrator, has created a beautiful Symphony that combines a classic feel with a modern sound palette. There will also be a free talk prior to the concert, held at 7.20pm in the Allan Mullins Hall, for those who want to learn more about the night’s music. Penrith Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Joan Sutherland Centre on Saturday, May 17 at 8pm. Tickets range from $22-$47. For bookings call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

lassical music will get a modern twist when Penrith Symphony Orchestra joins with local vocalists in the second concert of its season. Penrith Symphony Orchestra will take to the stage, joined by local choirs and a group of five talented soloists at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, May 17. The concert will feature a mix of old and new, with music from two beloved masters of classical music and one of Australia’s most appraised young composers. One of Mozart’s most beloved choral works, ‘The Coronation Mass’, will be performed on stage by Penrith Symphony Orchestra, with vocals from Penrith City Choir, Academy Singers, Warrimoo Chorale and Penrith City Youth Choir. Orchestra president David Cervi said that collaborations with choirs and solo vocalists are very popular with audiences.

Ruby Productions has adapted Wuthering Heights into a play and will be performing it at the John Lees Centre on Saturday, May 10, Saturday, May 17 and Saturday, May 24. Bronte’s highly acclaimed book was published in 1847 and has since inspired numerous other works of fiction, drama and even music, with its twisted and gripping tale of love finding relevance in many different contexts. Ruby Productions’ play, which was adapted from the novel by John Davison, and directed by Anthony Brown, will stay faithful to the original mystical, mysterious and passionate tone of the novel. Late night stars continue to quit I must say I’ve enjoyed the first week of Channel Seven’s show ‘House Rules’, which returned last weekend. The show is actually really good, and that’s coming from someone who is not a fan of renovation shows. It seems audiences agree with me with ‘House Rules’ averaging a million viewers each night. Let’s hope locals Ryan and Candy continue to do well.

Just a few weeks after David Letterman called it quits on his ‘Late Show’ gig (that ultimately went to Stephen Colbert), Craig Ferguson, who airs after Letterman both here and in the US, has also decided to call it quits. Ferguson will step down from ‘The Late Late Show’ in December. Ferguson has hosted the show since 2005 but his contract expires at year’s end.

Channel Ten will screen the new series of ‘24: Live Another Day’ this Monday, May 12 at 8.45pm. The 12 episode reboot will begin with a two-hour premiere and will be screened six days after the US air it. Kiefer Sutherland will once again front the series.

Now here’s a game show that I’m definitely going to enjoy. The hit A&E series ‘Pawn Stars’ is getting its own spin-off half-hour game show known as ‘Pawnography’. The show will see contestants answer trivia questions that increase in difficulty to win money.

The next series of ‘The Block’, due to air later this year, will be very different from previous seasons. Filming is currently underway in Melbourne, and it’s expected to include a mix of retail fronts and townhouses. Will it be known as ‘The Office Block’, we’ll just have to wait and see!

Lastly, a huge shout out to Penrith with many of us in reality shows this past year. I wrote 12 months ago that I was sick of seeing people from Bondi chosen for these shows. Congrats to Simon Meli (‘The Voice’), Tim Dormer (‘Big Brother’), Jay Johns and Renelle Jones (‘So You Think You Can Dance’).

THE SCRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY RATED PG

Starring: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig and Sean Penn ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ is an amazing story of an ordinary man who daydreams of extraordinary things. Working for Life magazine, alongside his crush Cheryl (Kristen Wiig), Walter (Ben Stiller) is forced to live out his adventurous daydreams when he is landed with the task of finding a missing cover photo taken by photojournalist Sean O’Connell (Sean Penn) for the last ever edition of the magazine. This event sees Walter travelling across the world in search of the reclusive photographer, taking him to places he only ever dreamed of and through situations even he has never imagined. This is a feel good movie with spectacular locations – much of the movie was filmed in Iceland – charming characters and a beautiful soundtrack. It has something for everyone including action, romance and extreme acts of bravery. The performances by Stiller, Wiig and Penn are spot on, with Stiller also taking on the role of director.

BAD NEIGHBOURS RATED MA15+ Starring: Rose Byrne, Seth Rogen and Zac Efron

THE BEARDS THE BEARD ALBUM Out Now

‘Bad Neighbours’ follows the story of a couple with a newborn baby who find their suburban bliss interrupted when a college fraternity moves in next door. After trying to make the best of a bad situation, parents Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) end up in an all out war with the frat boys next door, headed by president Teddy (Zac Efron) and his right hand man Pete (Dave Franco). As the neighbourhood battle progresses so do the pranks, including one incident that sees Mac being launched into the ceiling of his workplace after sitting on an airbag planted there by the unruly neighbours. An air bag, mind you, that was stolen from his car. ‘Bad Neighbours’ is directed by Nicholas Stoller, who was also behind comedy gems ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ and ‘Get Him to the Greek’. So far this rowdy comedy has gained much praise, with ‘Bad Neighbours’ receiving mostly positive reviews on popular review websites Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. This is a crude, dirty comedy that takes revenge antics to a whole new level and is absolutely sure to have you in constant stitches.

Lovers of facial hair related music will be happy to hear quirky outfit, The Beards, have released their fourth album, ‘The Beard Album’. Their new release covers all things beard related with tracks such as ‘There’s A Bearded Man Inside of Me’, the commanding ‘Hey You, Grow A Beard’, the sexy ‘Touch Me In The Beard’ and even includes a shout out to the opposite sex, with the feelgood pop anthem ‘All The Bearded Ladies’. The folk-rockers who have a clear passion for hairy faces took on the role of co-producer for the album, working alongside Paul Pilsneniks and recording the album at The Grove Studios on the central coast. Having toured extensively since forming in 2005 – with sold out shows across Australia, Canada and Europe – The Beards have gained a loyal fan base through their humorous music, passion filled live shows and facial hair obsession. Though it would be easy to get caught up in the novelty of an act like The Beards, there is more to these guys than just their glorious hair – even if it is quite impressive. ‘The Beard Album’ lives up to the standard of the folk rock four piece’s previous releases, giving fans just a little more of what they love – hair glorious hair!

Games THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 RATED M

PS3, PS4, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, XBOX 360

enrith Panthers may be most commonly thought of as a destination for entertainment or gaming, but it also offers delicious and convenient dining options at Kelly’s Brasserie and Cafe. Located in the Panthers complex, Kelly’s Brasserie is open for lunch from 11.30am to 3pm daily, and serves dinner from 5pm until 9.30pm. If you’re after a quick snack, or want to kick-start your meal with an appetiser, Kelly’s menu has entrees including salt and pepper squid, bruschetta, garlic bread and a soup of the day served with sour dough bread. For a more filling option, consider the antipasto plate, which includes marinated mushrooms, roast peppers, olives, sun blushed tomatoes, goats cheese and sour dough. The main menu covers a broad range of tastes and cuisines, with everything from the classic Aussie burger and chips available to pan fried garlic prawns, with spring onions and cream served with rice pilaf. Other options include the wild mushroom and pea risotto, the spaghetti puttanesca or the beef lasagne served with garlic bread. The herb and parmesan crumb chicken schnitzel is another choice bound to be popular with diners, while the grill menu features dishes such as grilled Atlantic

ay back in the 1860’s Dr Henry Lindeman realised the advantages of blending same-variety wines from different regions with differing growing conditions, and thus creating that “something special” in varietal taste and enjoyment. And while the company has regularly blended single varieties from different regions since, it’s just released a new label it calls its Regional Series and which showcases classic single varieties from complementary regions. These blends, it says, capture the best characters from each region to deliver wines that are beautifully balanced and expressive of variety. With vineyards dating back to 1843 in the Hunter Valley and later in Watervale and the Clare Valley, the Adelaide Hills and Yarra Valley, Lindeman’s has excellent assets to draw on for unique, outstanding characteristics in these blends. Using fruit from two vineyards for each of its three Regional Series blends – a 2011 Pinot Noir Chardonnay Vintage Cuvee, 2013 Chardonnay and 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon – they’ve crafted wines of great value at just $23 each. The Regional Series Chardonnay is particularly rewarding, being made from fruit from the Hunter Valley and Adelaide Hills. It has rather creamy stone-fruit, refined citrus and green apple flavours to the fore, and I would suggest that it is and ideal drop to partner with winter warming pork or veal dishes.

salmon, lemon myrtle marinated chicken breast, and roast pork belly with caramelised apple. More exotic flavours can be found in the Malaysian vegetable laksa, which has bean sprout, chilli, coriander, cucumber and crispy shallots and can be ordered plain for vegetarians or with chicken and prawns. The North Indian butter chicken is another great dish, served with steamed rice and naan bread for an authentic Indian food experience. Seafood lovers will enjoy the battered barramundi fillet or panko crumbed calamari, both served with a generous side of beer battered chips, salad and lemon. The seafood plate is a more extravagant dish, including salad of smoked salmon, prawns and lemon with prawn twisters, crumbed scallops, crab claws, calamari and chips. Side dishes include chips, potato wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli, garden salad, seasonal vegetables and mashed potato while there are also ‘light bites’ available such as Caesar salad and char grilled vegetable salad. The ‘Juniors and Seniors’ menu offers great meals for just $9, with choices like a cheeseburger with chips, spaghetti bolognaise and 150 gram rump steak with mash and peas. Kelly’s Cafe is located right next to the brasserie, making it easy for diners to get a sweet dessert, cake or hot coffee after their meal with a wide range available. Kelly’s Brasserie and Cafe are located in Penrith Panthers on Mulgoa Road. For more information, call 4720 5529 or visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au.

Bob Ausburn has made it his mission to document the history of the Nepean Rowing Club through its Visitor’s Book. Photo: Melinda Jane

SPECIAL REPORT

One man’s journey to collect the tales of our beloved river Bob Ausburn joined the Nepean Rowing Club in 1939 and has since worked tirelessly to fill the invaluable Visitor’s Book with signatures of rowing greats from yesteryear and now CASSANDRA O’CONNOR @cassandra_o

owing has played a large role in Penrith’s history, with the Nepean River considered by many to be the best natural rowing stretch in the world. Over the years there have been many races along the Nepean River, its banks lined with cheering supporters and rowing competitors. And documenting it all through the Nepean Rowing Club’s treasured Visitor’s Book has been life member Bob Ausburn. Keen to share the myriad of stories contained with, he carefully turns the yellowing pages of the Visitor’s Book, reminiscing about famous races, controversial comments and the emotional outpouring from international competitors who fell in love with the scenic Nepean during their time training and competing.

“The club was founded in 1928, the year the King’s Cup was first held on the Nepean River,” Mr Ausburn said. “I joined the Rowing Club in 1939 just after I left school – I had just turned 15 – and I am a life member. “Don Cameron – he was a forward thinking man who did great things for the sport of rowing – had started the guest book and after the Second World War (which Mr Ausburn fought in as a signalman in Papua New Guinea) I came back and looked after the book.” The life long Penrith resident took it upon himself to ‘stand by’ at every regatta and obtain the signatures and comments of all V.I.Ps attending. But Mr Ausburn was not just on the sidelines. In the 1939-40 season he was a member of the crew that won the State lightweight fours championship, the first ever rowing title won by Nepean Rowing Club. He was also one of the youngest competitors to ever win a title. However, with his competition days behind him, Mr Ausburn has focused

intently on recording and documenting the Club’s history. “We have signatures from the international competitors, from the King’s Cup, the Olympians of 1952... and we started a second book for the Sydney 2000 Olympics,” Mr Ausburn said. One of the most prized signatures in Visitor’s Book is that of world champion sculler, Henry Robert ‘Bobby’ Pearce, who hailed from Sydney. “Bobby Pearce had won the President’s Cup and the King’s Cup. In 1928 he won the gold medal in the single sculls at the Olympics and then defended his Olympic title successfully at the 1932 Olympics. He was also an Empire Games champion, now the Commonwealth Games,” Mr Ausburn says with complete respect and awe. “He was the World Champion and everyone recognised him as unbeatable. “He ended up joining the Canadian Navy and was a leftenant commander when he came back to Australia in 1954 to watch a very particular race.” That race was the NSW Rowing Australia

The Nepean River is a course that presents a mental test to the oarsmen

15

The first Visitor’s Book that contains the signature of Sculling legend, Bobby Pearce Club Secretary Morris Reddan and is read by those who pen their signatures. “It is very nice to look back and read all the lovely comments left by our visitors,” a proud Mr Ausburn says. Some have left lovely messages commenting on the beauty of the Nepean Gorge, others have been written in Korean and Chinese and Mr Ausburn can only guess what they say. He smiles as he sees a picture drawn

by one international rower of a beautiful sunny day and a rower enjoying the Nepean River. Mr Ausburn says it is a special experience to be able to connect with people of all cultures and backgrounds through the sport. With the Rowing World Cup held earlier this year, the collection of signatures has grown even larger and it will not be long before a third Visitor’s Book will be required.

But Mr Ausburn won’t be in charge of that book, he has decided to pass on his tradition to the Rowing Club’s next generation of athletes and supporters. “I have finished all the calligraphy on the pages and it is time for me to retire,” he says with the books fondly clasped in his arms. He will be entrusting Jacob Munday with the Visitor’s Books. “I leave them for posterity.”

Championships on February 27, 1954 between Peter Evatt (son of H.V. Evatt who was a Leader of the Australian Labor Party), Mervyn Wood ( who would go on to be a four time Olympian with three medals to his name, and who later became Police Commissioner of NSW) and J.G Lawson of Singleton. “It was a three mile race and at the twoand-a-quarter-mark there is a kink in the river,” Mr Ausburn recalls. “Wood was in front in the race but just before the end stopped rowing because he thought the race was over, but Evatt kept going and so won. “I asked Wood after the race about what happened and he wasn’t happy about the kink in the river that’s for sure,” Mr Ausburn chuckles. But watching in the audience was a very impressed Bobby Pearce, who wrote in the Visitor’s Book, “This is no doubt still the best course in the world and I have seen a few. Woods is good, Evatt won, one must give him credit”. Mr Wood has written in the book that the Nepean River, “provides a magnificent test of a rower’s skill... it is a course that presents a mental test to the oarsmen”. It seems that decades later, international athletes still agree. In the second Visitor’s Book, started in 2000 for the Sydney Olympics, numerous teams have signed and left messages thanking Nepean Rowing Club for their time. Though the 2000 Olympics were held at the purpose built International Regatta Centre, many athletes trained on the Nepean River in preparation. On the inside cover of the book is the poem, ‘A Racing Eight’, which was frequently performed by long serving

The smallest decisions can be the biggest too KATHERINE TWEED

minutes of my day because I was being indecisive about the colour of an outfit that no-one would ever see, I was pretty annoyed with my indecisive self. But despite my frustration, when I put them on that night I couldn’t help but crack a smile – I really love my new pyjamas. And that’s when it hit me, these pyjamas are the only clothes I own that I bought for myself and myself only. They may have cost a tiny $6 but they were the most selfish purchase I have made yet and this is why: I always take a second to consider how others will see me in outfits I am considering buying. For example, I have talked myself out of dresses that are too short or too tight because of the way I want to portray myself to others (even if I think I look totally hot) and I buy clothes that are flattering to my body shape because I want to look good, which is selfish in a way – but isn’t what we see as ‘good-looking’ all because of others’ opinions? Pyjamas are among the only things that no-one else sees so, even though I wasted 20 minutes on a small decision, it’s actually a big one because it’s a purchase all for me.

katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

There are few purchases we make with just ourselves in mind

As a general rule, I take forever to make decisions. I am not just talking about the hard decisions, like where to go on holidays or when to move house, I am talking about every single decision I make on a day to day basis. What to have for lunch, what to wear during the day, which pair of socks would be a more useful purchase and when to get up in the morning all seem to be some of the most difficult – yes, I am always on the hunt for a good pair of socks – but this week I became really frustrated with myself over one particular decision I was avoiding. One thing that I really love about the cooler weather is coming home and immediately throwing on a snugly pair of pyjamas for the evening. So naturally, I need couple of good pairs of winter pyjamas to get me through the season. I was in a local department store this week on my seasonal pyjama shop when I found myself staring at a wall of pyjamas. They were all the exact same style but different colour and pattern combinations. I had a pink pair in one hand, a blue pair with a really cool pattern under my arm and an awesome mint pair with spotty mint and white pants. I spent 10 or so minutes putting one pair down, picking another set up and putting that down before I finally settled on two different pairs – they were very cheap so two pairs weren’t going to break the bank. But I got to the counter checkout and decided that I didn’t need two pairs, so the decision making began again and I had to step aside to let the poor assistant serve some other customers while my brain debated with itself over and over again. I finally settled on the blue pair, made my purchase and I haven’t thought about the other colours since. Now I don’t know about you but my pyjamas are rarely seen by anyone who matters, in fact I don’t think I have ever worn them outside – not even to dash to the clothesline or to collect the morning paper. So, after I took my pyjamas home and realised that I had lost 20

Cleaning your gold, silver and platinum Our jewellery can be made from lots of different metals so it is important to know just how to care for them properly and ensure they last. Silver: It’s common for silver to tarnish and oxidise, especially when left unworn for a period of time. This is a natural reaction to chemicals in the atmosphere, heat and the body oils of the wearer. To remove discolouration I’d recommend investing in a good quality jewellery cleaning cloth or silver cleaning solution. Gold: I like to refer to yellow gold as a ‘self polishing metal’. It still requires regular maintenance however it very rarely tarnishes and doesn’t change colour. Avoiding chemicals like chlorine is a good place to start as this will dull the shine of your yellow gold jewellery and over time can weaken the structure of the metal. White Gold will require a little more maintenance than its yellow counterpart. All white gold has a plating called ‘rhodium’ and this will need to be re-done approximately every 12 months to maintain the high lustre of your piece. General wear and tear can be polished out by your jeweller and in between professional cleans you can maintain the look of the metal with a jewellery cleaning solution. Keep an eye on claws holding your diamonds or gemstones in place as gold is still ‘bendable’ with the right amount of force. Platinum: Although platinum is perceived to be the strongest metal it still scratches and dents – sometimes more easily than gold! It has a slightly different characteristic to gold. The metal itself doesn’t wear away when scratched; it displaces or separates and gives way for the scratch. This can sometimes result in deeper grooves and dents than expected from a bump or scratch. Over time it also develops a rich lustre called a ‘patina’. I personally prefer this worn look and my wedding band is starting to exhibit it now after almost two years of wear. Platinum is a pure white metal, meaning that it doesn’t require plating like white gold however it is slightly more grey in colour in comparison to rhodium plated white gold. It can be cared for and cleaned using the same method as gold.

HOROSCOPES

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Your unpredictable ways will be very predictable this week. Rebellious? Eccentric? Impulsive in love? Pushing everyone’s buttons for your own personal amusement? A big yes to all the above, as you channel your unique talents! For inspiration, look to avant-garde Aquarians role-models like Mozart, James Dean and Bob Marley.

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

With Thursday’s Full Moon activating your adventure and travel zone, it’s time to channel the intrepid explorer within as you plan a weekend escape, a heavenly holiday or an overseas getaway – somewhere you’ve never been before. Your imagination is firing on all cylinders on Friday but don’t get carried away with ridiculous ideas.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

You’ll feel pulled in many opposing directions, as multiple responsibilities and people compete for your attention. Thursday’s Full Moon spells the end of spontaneous spending sprees, as you realise you have to make a little money go a very long way. Venus and Uranus hook up in your sign on Friday, which increases your spontaneous side and independent streak.

JOANNE MADELINE MOORE

It’s not the ideal week to host a jolly family reunion or bring up sensitive old issues. The Full Moon falls in your home zone, so be on domestic drama alert and choose your words carefully, as loved ones will make mountains out of molehills. But it is a terrific time to broaden your mental horizons through nifty networking.

Star predictions for the week beginning May 11

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro. tumblr.com www.twitter.com/ JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2014.

Villa Virgo is usually a place where efficiency reigns, routine is revered and surprises are unwelcome. This week (courtesy of the Full Moon and Mercury) you’ll find that life’s complicated, relationships are unpredictable, and the rules are constantly changing. So it’s the perfect time to move out of your comfort zone.

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Have you been shopping up a storm when you should be saving or paying off debt? If the answer is ‘yes’, then there could be some dramas this week involving money and marriage or family finances. With Venus and Uranus linking up in your romance zone on Friday, some lucky Librans will throw caution and common sense to the wind and fall in love at first sight.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Taureans are fabulous flirters and this week, with the Full Moon stimulating your relationship zone (and Venus hooking up with Uranus). It’s time to give those charisma muscles a workout as you radiate your sensual charms far and wide. Want more love and success in your life? Jump right in Bulls and you shall receive.

Thursday’s Full Moon and Venus/Pluto square magnify your possessive steak and stubborn side, but try not to get into super intense mode. Turn off your motor and cool your heels, otherwise you risk Scorpio burn-out (not a pretty sight!). It’s time to lay down arms and build bridges with loved ones.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

You’re never short of lightning flashes of inspiration but you can fall short in the execution department. This week, as action planet Mars trines Mercury (your ruler) it’s time to finish long-standing projects and tie up loose ends. Friday’s fabulous aspects also help you replace outdated aspirations with dazzling up-dated dreams.

This week’s complicated stars stir up your Sagittarian sense of humour. Just make sure your gags and one-liners don’t offend others, and that your jokes are ones that everyone can enjoy. Attached Archers – it’s time to patch up partnership problems. Singles – look for love with someone who is smart, sexy and spontaneous.

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

With Jupiter journeying through your sign until July 16 and Venus/Uranus shaking up your life direction, don’t play it too safe Crabs. It’s time to experiment, explore, enthuse and engage. Be inspired by birthday great Katharine Hepburn, “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.” But there’ll be tension between work and home.

DECORATE IN SECONDS

You function best when others behave in predictable, sensible ways. Which is hardly ever and certainly not on a Full Moon! But the more you slip into control-freak mode, the more problems you’ll have. When it comes to a rickety relationship with a family member, don’t keep interacting in the same old way.

Time to start looking for a new home? Have you been daydreaming about moving house? Are you eager to try out a new space, neighbourhood or state? If so, it may be time to start scanning the real estate pages. One thing you need to do before you start looking into home loans and calling up housing agents is make sure you have a few strong, concrete reasons to move. Here are some signs that it may be the right time: You’re feeling cramped Is your family increasing in numbers? Are your kids going through a major growth spurt? Often, the youngest members of the family can be the biggest reason for changing homes. While a small apartment may be suitable for families that have one toddler at home, those that have several kids or even one child approaching their teenage years will likely need to expand to something larger. Are you losing value? Overall, the Australian housing market is improving, meaning most home owners will see gains when they sell their homes. However, it’s not unheard of for certain neighbourhoods or pieces of property to lose values, even in a seller’s market. Recent RP Data reports are showing price movements varying substantially across the country, so it’s more important than ever for property owners to be equipped with the most up-to-date research available. You may want to look into housing reports (try the new BOQ Autumn Buyer’s Guide) or consult an appraiser to see if your home is decreasing in value. Your community isn’t satisfying You may love everything about the actual home you live in, but your property is inherently tied to your community, and if that aspect of your living situation isn’t up to snuff, it may be time to move on. Perhaps the schools in your neighbourhood leave a lot to be desired, or maybe you are finding that the supposed “economic boom” that was promised by your real estate agent is never going to happen in your area. Whatever the issue, if you’re not happy in the community, you might want to consider changing things up.

This is the key to a healthy gym. Health is a big issue these days and I’m only setting myself up for when I’m older by being fit and healthy.

Top three tips for good health? 1. Make small goals and then a large one for the end 2. Eat clean 3. Exercise every day (no excuses)

Biggest health/fitness misconception? Diets. I believe in lifestyle change for the rest of your life, not just as a temporary measure. Change in the food you eat with an eating plan.

Freestyle – anything else you want to say? When people notice a change in your body and how healthy you actually look, this is self gratitude to the hard work you put into being healthy and fit. One the biggest obstacles in life is time. When you have set goals it is easier to always find the time, even if it means waking up in the morning 45 minutes earlier. Come visit me at Mauler Muay Thai and learn the art of Muay Thai, self defence and just being healthy.

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy?

This is probably the most common reason people give for not exercising: they say they just don’t have the time. Well let me put it to you this way – exercise is every bit as important as eating, sleeping and breathing! It should not be viewed as an ancillary part of your day, but rather a necessity. You probably don’t go a week without eating, and you should not go a week without exercise either. In fact, you typically shouldn’t go more than a couple of days at most without it. The trick to making time for exercise is to view it as a nonnegotiable part of your day. Ideally, schedule it into your appointment book the way you would an important meeting or social event. Set the time for it and then make no excuses about keeping your exercise “appointment. What you’ll find is that the more you exercise, the better you’ll feel and the more addictive it will become. Soon you won’t want to miss your exercise sessions because you’ll notice how much your energy and stamina drop if you don’t keep to your plan. Your ‘get up and go’ starts falling away and you will know why. You need to place a HIGH PRIORITY on getting some movement in and schedule your day around the exercise, not the other way around like most people do. This way it will get done and you will serve as a powerful example to those who you love to also do the same and commit to exercising regularly. When it comes to exercise, there’s no time like the present. Don’t wait another day to get your program started. And please don’t use your age as an excuse either, because no matter what your age, exercise can provide enormous benefits for your health. If you happen to be over 40, though, it’s especially important to either start or step up your exercise program. This is the time of life when your physical strength, stamina, balance and flexibility start to decline, and exercise can help to counteract that dramatically. It really is that powerful.

life & style

How does fitness feature in your life? I started learning Kickboxing/Muay Thai at a young age and fell in love with the sport straight away. It is a sport that has very high standards and respect for the nature of where it was formed. I have had 52 fights, 36 wins, 16 losses to date and in amongst that I won a WKBF World Title last year. I teach Muay Thai now because I want people to learn what I have learnt and hold self confidence in their day to day life. I teach children from the age of three to adults, and people of every fitness level. Mauler Muay Thai is located in Jamisontown on Regentville Road.

Pain relief is one of the biggest reasons pet owners consider acupuncture

VET

PHARMACIST

A prickly treatment that provides relief

Sun exposure during winter is vital

Last week we discussed arthritis treatment in pets and touched on acupuncture in animals. For many years acupuncture has suffered scepticism, despite being a well respected form of therapy for thousands of years. The goal of acupuncture is to establish healthy body functions by restoring the natural circulation of energy. Acupuncture bridges the gap between Western and Eastern medicine and is great in combination with Western medicine or in medical conditions that have responded poorly to conventional treatment. In pets, acupuncture is most commonly used for musculoskeletal problems (arthritis and pain), nervous disorders, reproductive problems, poor immunity or internal problems. Acupuncture is best known for use in pain relief. It can be used as a primary treatment or in conjunction with conventional treatment. It may also be used when conventional treatment is not effective or when side effects are too great. Acupuncture helps to relieve pain, reduce muscular spasms, improve circulation, reduce swelling and improve healing. One of the most common concerns that people have with acupuncture is whether it will be painful for their pets. Acupuncture does involve placing many needles into the skin which sounds painful. However, the needles used for acupuncture are very different to needles that we have all experienced. Firstly, the needles are incredibly fine and they have a round tip. These needles aim to separate the skin rather than cutting through it. Most people that have acupuncture seem to describe it as a simple pricking sensation. Dogs and cats seem to be a little apprehensive at first but very quickly relax. Some dogs are so calm that they have even fallen asleep during treatments! Acupuncture is one of the safest therapies available if practiced by a qualified animal acupuncturist and side effects are rarely seen. It is very important that your pet is thoroughly examined before acupuncture to make sure a diagnosis is made. Since acupuncture relieves pain and can alter symptoms, it can mask a more serious illness if a diagnosis is not made by your vet.

The cooler weather has the effect making us want to stay indoors more. However, less exposure to the sun reduces how much Vitamin D our bodies produce. Low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to Parkinson’s disease, obesity in children, asthma and heart disease. This deficiency may also be putting us at risk of diabetes, brittle bone disease and possibly some cancers. In the elderly, Vitamin D deficiency is often a factor in weak bones and muscle aches and pains. For pregnant women, lack of Vitamin D has been shown to cause problems with bone growth in the unborn child. The best way to get Vitamin D is from direct sunlight as it is very hard to get enough through your diet alone. A good rule of thumb is to get out into the sunshine for at least 20 minutes a day and don’t wear sunscreen during this time. With shorter daylight hours and weaker sunshine in winter some people may need to look at alternatives to get the Vitamin D they need. Vitamin D3 supplements are widely available and quite inexpensive. A dosage of 1000IU of Vitamin D3 every day can help improve Vitamin D levels in the body. A busy lifestyle can also put you at risk of low Vitamin D – leaving for work early and arriving home after dark, especially during winter can mean the average person may not be getting adequate levels of Vitamin D from natural sunlight and supplementation may be needed. Finally taking Vitamin D with bone supplements helps the absorption of Calcium into the body, so this is something to keep in mind when choosing a bone supplement. Your doctor can organise a test for Vitamin D levels and recommend the best treatment if you are found to have a deficiency. If you have any questions about supplements or Vitamin D deficiency, ask us at Martin’s Chemist, St Marys and we can provide you with additional information.

Make time for your mum and Jesus Mother’s Day is a great day to make our mums feel special, yet this Mother’s Day, some mums might be hoping to feel special more than just one day in the year. Mothers are under so much pressure and many are hanging out for a break; “mum’s taxi” ferrying kids to sport, school, dancing, work, shops and friends. Then she tries to balance responsibilities at home with work and shopping, while catching up with friends, spending time with her husband, then trying for some quiet time to herself. There just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day. In the Bible’s book of Luke, we read where Jesus came into the home of two women, Martha and Mary. Luke tells us that when Jesus arrived, “Mary sat... listening to what Jesus said,” while, “Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made”. Martha, ticked off by this came to Jesus saying, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” Jesus’ reply is important and insightful. “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her.” Jesus recognises that although life is busy, and there is much to be done, choices about priorities need to be made and Mary has made the right choice – spending time listening to Jesus. Mums, as you hopefully relax and enjoy Mother’s Day, don’t forget the importance of spending time getting to know Jesus and listening to what he has to say to us in the Bible.

After being built during the Spanish property bubble, owners of Ciudad Central are desperate to sell the ghost town airport

DAVE ELLIS

A forlorn sight from outside, but inside the airport terminal remains in pristine condition. Photo: FlickR

Only two things were missing... passengers and freight aircraft

The first passengers had flown into Ciudad in December 2008 on low-cost and charter flights, but major airlines showed no interest. Eventually 18 months after opening, Ireland’s budget airline Ryanair ventured in as the first international airline to use Ciudad, with three services a week from

of private aircraft movements, Ciudad officially closed in April 2012. Since closing, the airport’s been used for the filming of a number of motor company advertisements, and it was used for some scenes in a movie called ‘I’m So Excited!’. It is a comedy that coincidentally is about a flight from Madrid to Mexico that

London’s Stansted Airport. But these lasted only six months until November 2010, carrying some 22,000 passengers in that time. Air Berlin also flew in for several months, and on October 29, 2011 Spanish low-cost service Vueling spelled the final death of Ciudad Real Central when it flew its – and thus the airport’s – last service there. After staying open to handle a scattering

develops mechanical problems. Hilarity abounds in the reactions of its bisexual pilots, three gay stewards, and those in First Class whom it eventuates include a hit man, a fraudster, a female blackmailer and a film star with girlfriend problems. And while you’re figuring all that out, the receivers of Ciudad Real are still trying to find a buyer for the world’s emptiest airport. At this rate, you or I could buy it!

Friday 9 May 2014 the western weekender • west life

f you think QANTAS has problems, consider a whopping international airport in Spain that cost almost the equivalent of AU$1.7 billion to build in 2008, and although able to handle a mindboggling 10 million passengers a year, hasn’t seen a single plane or passenger for over two years. And when it recently went up for auction with a starting price of just $170 million – a mere 10 per cent of its original cost – the modern, pristine but idle airport did not attract a single bid. Now the receivers are thinking of lowering the reserve to just AU$136 million… and if they don’t get that, they’ve indicated they’ll maybe even think about no reserve at all – proving, that indeed, desperate men do desperate things. The bizarre case of the Ciudad Central Airport in the city of Ciudad Real, about 200km south of Madrid, began during Spain’s property bubble whose origins were in the late 1990s, a time when developers were throwing money at anything they thought people would have a use for, and which imploded dramatically in 2008 – just as the airport opened. Ciudad Central had been seen as a hub for millions of holidaymakers who would fly in from around Europe and Britain, taking the high-speed AVE train from a station right at the airport to Spain’s capital Madrid and archaeologically fascinating Cordoba (each about 50 minutes away) and to Seville and Malaga a further hour or so by the AVE. But the proposed AVE station – that would have been the first ever high-speed rail station at a Spanish airport – never eventuated. The bottom fell out of both the property market and the Spanish economy, and rather than flying in by their millions, tourists and other travellers stayed away. Built as Spain’s first privately-owned international airport, Ciudad Central appeared almost jinxed from the start, when the developers named their massive $1.7 billion venture Don Quixote International – a name considered by many as a poor choice, with the 17th century Spanish literary figure, whilst chivalrous, also quite delusional. The name did not last long, and Don Quixote International was soon changed to Ciudad Real Central. And it had everything, from a runway that at 4.2km was one of the longest in Europe and able to take the world’s largest aircraft the A380 Airbus; a terminal that could handle those 10 million passengers a year; over a thousand undercover carparking places; facilities to shift 47,000 tonnes of air-freight annually; maintenance hangars; a heliport; and a covered 300m long walkway to where the AVE station was to be built. And around all this, an industrial zone for industries wanting direct access to freighter aircraft. Only two things were missing: passengers and those freighter aircraft.

Nurses at the unit assist new parents who might be struggling to get used to parenthood with anything from feeding and sleeping problems to looking after twins or triplets. “We’ve been around in Penrith for 22 years and see about 100 to 110 families a month in the residential unit,” said Centre Manager, Leanne Daggar. “We are very much a nursing based service – we work together with parents to figure out what works for them individually.” The lounges in the residential unit desperately needed updating because, as Ms Daggar says, it is a service that sees thousands of people a year but also one that relies the comfort of its clients.

new Australian Government website is tipped to make it easier for the one-in-six Australians experiencing hearing loss to access support services. The hearing services website eases the process of finding information and applying for services available through the Australian Government Hearing Services Program. Assistant Minister for Health, Fiona Nash said that a person’s information is now managed electronically, replacing the need for many of the paper forms. “With just a few clicks, people can check their eligibility and apply for services online. It gives Australians better access to up-to-date information about hearing, what services are available,” she said. “This means eligible Australians with
