Bullying and victimisation occurs on a regular basis
SPECIAL REPORT
Schools struggle with daily challenge of bullying Whilst our attitudes toward schoolyard scuffles have come a long way, schools and anti-bullying educators are crying out for more support from all corners of the community

very now and then a particularly bad case of bullying in the schoolyard will make its way into national headlines, but Principal of Penrith Christian School Bruce Nevill says that dealing with bullying is daily challenge. “No school is 100 per cent perfect,” he admits. “10 years ago we had a really hard look at our anti-bullying policy and since then we have reviewed it regularly. We recognised that bullying was under reported but that to increase reporting required a change in culture.” A report by the Australian Institute of Family Studies released last week agreed that there is significant under-reporting of school bullying by both teachers and parents with one in three children aged 10 to 11-years-old reporting that they have

been picked on or bullied by peers. Speaking generally, Mr Nevill said that there is always room for improvement at every school. “Does bullying still happen? Yes. Is it under-reported? Yes. But it certainly isn’t tolerated anymore like in my generation and the community is definitely more aware of it,” he said. In the public school system, the Department of Education requires schools to have an Anti Bullying Plan developed in consultation with the school community. “Anti Bullying Plans outline individual and shared responsibilities of teachers, students and parents, for preventing and responding to bullying behaviour,” a spokesperson for the Department said. Surprisingly, the Department has no centralised database of bullying incidents and so does not have statistics on how prevalent bullying in local public schools is. Mr Nevill says that although bullying is under-reported schools such as
Penrith Christian School have made great advancements in preventing bullying from occurring. “We do a number of courses to give children the vocabulary to explain situations including victimisation and bullying,” he said. Penrith Christian School has also actively changed perceptions about ‘dobbing’ in the student body to promote a safer learning environment. “There’s an understanding that dobbing is when you fabricate a tale in order to get another student in trouble. The students know however that bullying can be ‘reported’, which simply involves relating the facts to a teacher or parent. Importantly, we emphasise that reporting doesn’t have to be done by the victim, it can be done by anyone,” he said. “At the end of the day bullying usually occurs because a student is viewed as different. We teach that God made all of us differently and that those differences must be respected.
Reporting doesn’t have to be done by the victim, it can be done by anyone
others. A picture of a girl sent to a boy in a relationship, may be circulated vindictively if the relationship ends.” The school has a “no mobile phone” policy, where students drop off their mobiles at the beginning of school and only have access to them after class. School staff also monitor online behaviour via their wifi network. “We see it as our responsibility to provide a safe learning environment. When students have issues such as online bullying there is no productive study there so we see it as our responsibility to step in where we can and provide help,” Mr Nevill said. And part of that is trying to educate parents. The Australian Institute of Family Studies found that parents will generally be more aware of bullying, a possible indication that children feel more comfortable confiding in their parents. Enough is Enough is an organisation that delivers training to schools on bullying and anti-violence. Operations Manager Lisa O’Grady said that parents definitely play a role in ending bullying behaviour. “We regularly receive phone calls from parents who are concerned about their children; just recently I had a situation where a child was being bullied because a grandparent had passed away,” she said. “Bullying is such a complex problem, and schools are trying to combat this issue, but they are lacking in resources.” Enough is Enough is also struggling as $250,000 in funding was cut by the State Government. “Our educational programs cost roughly $5 per head but schools are finding they don’t have the budget or that they cannot pass these costs onto parents,” she said.
3
Principal Bruce Nevill has implemented strong anti-bullying policies “Bullying seems to be placed in the too hard basket and that is concerning.” Mr Nevill agrees that financial pressures do not do schools any favours. “It costs money to train teachers in how to deal with bullying, to have them
available to spend that extra time with students who may be involved in an incident of victimisation,” he said. “It’s a financial investment but one that is worth it when you look at youth suicide rates.”
special report
“An important part of the process is not the punishment of the bully, as is commonly called for in the media. We try to restore relationships to stop such incidents from happening again. “Often a bully is only replicating or mirroring behaviour that they have been subjected to. In fact, the most successful way of stopping bullying is by talking with the peer group. Students often bully because, in a way, their behaviour is consented to by students who witness the incident but do not step in or question what is happening.” But schools in the local area are finding it challenging to keep up with the technological changes that enable bullying. “In my school days there might have been fisticuffs on the street and then the following day at school the matter was resolved. Online bullying however seems to have a far more detrimental, long term impact on students,” Mr Nevill said. “There are also social media sites that pose more risk than others. Facebook seems to have gotten the message and has increased personal security controls. Other sites such as Instagram and Snapchat still are very risky. “Students definitely have more to learn about due to social media. We have the local police speak to the children, some 12 and 13-years-old, about cyber bullying but also issues such as sexting. It is a confronting topic to teach children; that if they take a photo of themselves naked and send it to a person that that is an illegal act, dissemination of child pornography. There are some students at that age who wouldn’t know anything about this sort of behaviour, and others who would. “Sexting is certainly used to victimise

FEATURE STORY
Sisters have caught the gig bug after a turbulent year The McClymont sisters are enjoying their time on the road touring and writing, but the trio could have a new member if baby Tiggy gets her way...
alking to Mollie McClymont, you get a sense that things for her – and sisters Sam and Brooke who make up The McClymonts – are more balanced after the girls took a break last year. The country music trio’s touring schedule has slowed down and they have a new member of the family joining them on the road; Brooke’s daughter with husband and musician Adam Eckersley.
T
KATE REID @kate_reid6
“We used to do about five gigs a week but now because of Tiggy we just do weekends, which probably makes it better for us as well because we can have a life during the week and then just on weekends go and work,” Mollie said. And it seems that the talent of her mother, father and aunties may be rubbing off on Tiggy. “It’s crazy she’s so musical and she’s only a year and a half. She just loves music and loves playing harmonica and she just wants to get up on stage every night, we have to say ‘no Tiggy, not yet’,” Mollie said. Though things have slowed down a little in the last year the sisters have well and truly earned the change of pace after eight years of writing and touring, which has seen them awarded two ARIAs for Best Country Album with 2010’s ‘Wrapped Up Good’ and 2012’s ‘Two Worlds Collide’, an APRA Award and eight Golden Guitar Awards. In July of this year the trio released their fourth album ‘Here’s To You and I’. Surprisingly, this is the first album that the girls have recorded in their home country. For the release they teamed up with Aussie producer Lindsay Rimes who has worked with the likes of Lee Kernaghan, Tina Arena and Stan Walker. The album came about after two years of writing and plenty of life experiences to draw upon, including Brooke’s pregnancy and Mollie’s heart-breaking relationship breakdown. This lyrical openness has been a focus for the girls of late. “We did find it hard in previous years, you know we never really wanted to touch on anything [personal], but I think people know what songs are real and what isn’t, it’s just taken us a few years to realise that. I think getting older too you don’t mind, it’s like, ‘oh well this happens in life and let’s write about it because people will be able to relate to it’,” she explained. ‘Here’s To You and I’ also sees the sisters experiment with new sounds and a mix of genres from traditional country to more pop inspired tracks. “Growing up and getting older you mature a bit, okay, a lot maybe,” Mollie
People can’t believe they are listening to country music
laughed, “and that shows in the music”. Having been in the industry for almost a decade, The McClymonts have noticed a change in audiences’ attitudes towards country music. Thought it is a genre that is sometimes tagged with a not so positive label, the popularity of performers such as Taylor Swift, Keith Urban and Kasey Chambers has caused a shift in music listeners’ thoughts on the genre. “People can’t believe that they’re country because they like their music so much and I think it’s just changing people’s view on it, it’s not hick,” Mollie said. “We talk about things that are real, and our lyrics actually have meaning that people can relate to... I think [people] have just got that stigma attached to country music but it’s changing with Keith and Taylor and like I said, Kasey.” Come Saturday, August 23 The McClymonts will be bringing their music to Rooty Hill RSL and there’s no doubt Mollie is itching to get out on the road. “I love touring, I love the road. I think I’ve got the bug for it,” she said.
“It’s really nice to write as well, it gives you a bit of a break from the road but then you just get this feeling like, ‘ah, I need to be out on the road, I need to be doing gigs’.” The MyClymonts will be touring up until Sam McClymont’s much anticipated November wedding and then come January the sisters will be back on the road for a few months, including, of course, a stop off at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Regardless of the numerous accolades, it seems Mollie McClymont will be satisfied just to be able to continue to write and tour, keeping country music fans more than satisfied. “We’re so lucky that our fans have been so supportive and they allow us to tour and keep touring and I just think having a job is just amazing and it’s a goal in itself.” The McClymonts will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, August 23 at 8pm. Tickets are $40. For more information on the show or to make a booking call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

Gold Coast Cops a sure success You’ll find it very hard to find someone that doesn’t enjoy an episode of A&E’s ‘Pawn Stars’. The half-hour show about a Pawn Shop in Las Vegas is one of the most consistently successful programs on Foxtel, and now the network has confirmed that the show’s spin-off game show ‘Pawnography’ will finally premiere on A&E Tuesday, September 2 at 8.30pm.
Channel Ten’s hit drama series ‘Wonderland’ is set to return to our screens this Wednesday, August 13 at 8.30pm. Following on from a successful first season of laughs, romance and drama, the second season of ‘Wonderland’ further explores the tangled lives of four young Australian couples and their families, all set on one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches.
Good news if you’re a fan of Nine’s ‘House Husbands’ with the network confirming the show will return for a fourth season in 2015. Returning are Gary Sweet (Lewis), Firass Dirani (Justin), Gyton Grantley (Kane), Julia Morris (Gemma) and Natalie Saleeba (Abi).
I’m a huge fan of the long-running American TV show ‘Cops’ – some say, the world’s first reality show. A brand new 10-part Channel Ten series, which promises to be like its American counterpart is set to hit our screens in the near future called ‘Gold Coast Cops’. Can’t wait!
Channel Ten have added yet another commentator to their ever growing Big Bash team with English cricket Kevin Pietersen signing on. The former England captain will join Ricky Ponting, Mark Waugh, Adam Gilchrist and Damien Fleming behind the mic for the 2014-15 season.
Finally, it’s not long before Australian fans of ‘The Walking Dead’ are treated to a brand new season. Foxtel channel FX has confirmed the new season will premiere Monday, October 13. The fifth series will air in two parts starting from October 13 and finishing over February 2015.

NEED FOR SPEED RATED M
Starring: Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper If you like your movies with lots of fast cars and plenty of action then ‘Need For Speed’ will be right up your alley. Mechanic Tobey Marshall – played by ‘Breaking Bad’ star Aaron Paul – goes into partnership with the wealthy Dino Brewster, played by Dominic Cooper. Things don’t go as Tobey hoped and he ends up doing a two year prison sentence after being blamed, by Dino, for a crime he didn’t commit. After being released Tobey is hell bent on revenge and enters a cross country race. Dino finds out what his ex-partner is up to and sends his thugs out to ensure he never achieves his goal. ‘Need For Speed’ is full of exotic cars, speed and danger though the plot is a little slim. Along with Paul and Cooper the film also stars Michael Keaton and ‘28 Weeks Later’s Imogen Poots. It was directed by Scott Waugh who worked on the 2012 film ‘Act of Valor’ and is a former stunt performer.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY RATED M Starring: Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana Now screening at Hoyts Penrith
SINEAD O’CONNOR I’M NOT BOSSY, I’M THE BOSS Out Now
The new release ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is the latest addition to a long list of movies based on Marvel Comics characters. The film follows Peter Quill a.k.a Star-Lord, played by ‘Parks and Recreation’ funny man Chris Pratt. Quill is an outlaw who ends up in inter-galactic prison. Before he can be released he is forced into teaming up with a rather random assortment of alien bandits to form the Guardians of the Galaxy. The group includes Gamora, an alien warrior, played by Zoe Saldana; Drax the Destroyer, a powerful creature with a human spirit, played by Dave Bautista; Groot, a towering tree-like creature, played by Vin Diesel; and Rocket, the intelligent raccoon, played by Bradley Cooper. Together they go on an adventure to save the universe from the villain Ronan, who wants to get his hands on a mysterious orb that has the power to destroy everything. Fans of the Marvel Comics series will surely flock to see this film. But even for those who may not be familiar with Guardians of the Galaxy there is plenty to love, with the movie’s quirky characters, action and humour.
Sinead O’Connor’s voice is an amazing instrument; you only need to revisit her most well known track ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ to be reminded of this fact. Yet in the years since that release, we seem to have heard more about O’Connor’s personal life, and more recently her open letter to Miley Cyrus, than anything else. But behind the headlines the Irish singer-songwriter has continued to make music and her new release ‘I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss’ will be her 10th full length album. The title was inspired by Lean In’s ‘Ban Bossy’ campaign that encourages girls to speak up and take the lead, without fear of being called ‘bossy’. It’s not surprising that O’Connor chose such a title; she has never shied away from strongly opinionated lyrical content. What is surprising though is the cover art for the album, which shows an almost unrecognisable O’Connor in a wig and tight black dress. Underneath the surprising exterior listeners will find tracks like ‘How About I Be Me’, which is simple yet lovely while ‘Take Me To Church’ is a little more lyrically aggressive. Unfortunately neither track showcases her vocal skills to their full potential but there is still plenty to love about what has been released so far.

WINE
A perfect match for red meat and game DAVE ELLIS
hief Winemaker, Matt Koch and his team have done a fantastic job with their recently released Rosemount MV Collection of top drops from McLaren Vale. It’s a region that’s been an essential part of the company since the 1980s – and all the moreso since it acquired the 100-year-old Ryecroft winery and vineyards there in 1991. They’ve four wines under the MV label, a Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2012 vintage; and a Chardonnay and GSM from the 2013. But it was the GSM that really grabbed our attention: here is a wine that absolutely bursts in the mouth with raspberry and strawberry flavours foremost, followed by some spice and nice earthiness to round out a lovely soft finish. Matt Koch readily talks up McLaren Vale as one of the company’s most dynamic regions, producing fruit of regular consistency and quality. And that certainly was the case for this 2013 GSM (Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre), which came from a particularly hot vintage, but was shielded to a nice degree by a strong leaf canopy. A wonderful drop for winter-time red meat or game dishes, and with a good jug of gravy on the side. Well recommended at $25. One to note: We’ve found a Rosé that we like to share at the table with warm to hot curries at our favourite Indian eateries. The 2011 Cherry Tree Hill label blended from Cabernet, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect foil when served chilled with our spread of curry choices. It’s priced at $18 plus freight.

A magic serum to cure that dry skin? KATHERINE TWEED

most layers. As a result of all this, they are normally very expensive and come in tiny bottles that don’t look like they’ll last a fortnight. But looks can be deceiving, especially given that you only need a tiny amount of the product every time you use it. For the past week I have been using an antioxidant facial serum with rosehip and camillia seed and my skin has already thanked me for it. I apply it after cleansing and exfoliating (if you use a toner, apply after toner) and follow up with a moisturiser with similar active ingredients. Just like I was promised, my skin appears smoother and is definitely more hydrated but as for the improved elasticity and repaired damage I am expecting to see, I’ll have to keep you posted.

Serum treatments have a reputation for being expensive but only a small amount is required
Though they’ve been around for years, serums are becoming the ultimate addition to any skin care regime, promising miracle treatments for just about any skin issue. Being someone that is constantly on the go, I often find that I am strapped for time and it is my skincare routine that tends to be the item on my to-do list that gets punted when I need a few extra minutes. As a result, my skin regularly gets neglected and you can see the impact of that on my face all the time... but especially in the cooler months. Winter really dries my skin out, which is visible on my hands and lower legs and though you can tell the skin on my face needs some TLC, it is less obviously dry, which means that I also don’t feel the need to tend to it as much as the rest of my skin. Stupid, I know. It has only been in the past year that I have started making it a necessity to remove all makeup before bed and only in the past few months I have been regularly cleansing and exfoliating my skin – so you could say I am still getting into the swing of looking after it – but what it is really missing out on is moisture. So, in a bid to get myself into a routine of ensuring my skin gets the moisturising it needs, I went on the hunt for a product that I would love using – something with cool packaging, great scents and specific uses would do the treat. On my hunt, I found a brand that really caught my eye, The Grown Alchemist, but while trawling through their website, I also found that they have a range of serums for specific treatments, which is a skincare option that I have never considered before. Serums are the most basic part of a skincare regime, and by basic I mean they are packed with only the good stuff and aren’t clouded with other ingredients, like moisturisers. They are the most potent products you can buy and normally have the best results because the active ingredients target specific skin issues – you’ll often see serums specifically for treating dark spots or wrinkles – and penetrate right down into the layers of your skin, whereas moisturisers only protect the outer-

Jewellers has established strong business relationships in the industry
A gem of a gentleman and great tales too! Last week I was privileged to meet with one of the best-kept secrets in the gemstone trade. This supplier had a wealth of knowledge as well as a great amount of unique gemstones with a story behind each one. Being in the jewellery industry can generally mean one of two things; you’re either working in retail and it is your ‘part time’ job, OR you are genuinely in love with the whole idea of creating a piece of jewellery and providing excellent customer service. We are very lucky at York Jewellers that we are surrounded by a team who truly love what they do. Which brings me back to this supplier. His passion for his craft was infectious and gave me a refreshed appreciation for what we do and how gems come to be housed in the incredible jewellery that we see everyday at York. It was a real experience sitting down with him and discussing the ins and outs of his travels, how he sources each gem, the cutting and refining process to bring out the best colour and fire in the stone, and the list goes on. There was history behind each and every stone, how its journey had started and how it came to be in his possession. We spoke about a recent trip that he made overseas to source some specific gems for a retailer. On his trip he took with him some stones that had belonged to his father, as he is a secondgeneration merchant, much like myself. I remember being surrounded by gems and diamonds as a young lad in my dad’s workshop where it all began in the Penrith mall! These gems had been in the back of his dad’s safe for many years. Technology has improved so much over the years that he was able to have these pieces re-cut to improve performance and desirability while retaining the visual size of the gem. The difference blew me away! It just goes to show that quality is just as important when it comes to semi-precious gemstones as it is with diamonds. At York Jewellers we are privileged to be able to offer our clients the highest quality goods as we have formed solid relationships within the industry. To view a selection of gems either loose or set into fine jewellery, just make an appointment with one of our consultants. We are more than happy to help! See www.yorkjewellers.com.au.

Star predictions for the week beginning August 10
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
The week goes slowly but then Mercury moves into your sign on Saturday, when you’ll be at your curious best… and picky worst. Aim to view the glass of life as being half-full rather than half-empty. Be inspired by famous chef Julia Child: “Find something you’re passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it.”
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Children and teenagers will blur the boundaries and test your patience this week. If you are firm and flexible – a tricky balance – then you can guide them through the constantly changing landscape. Don’t dismiss financial matters though. The devil is definitely in the detail as you take the time to research, revise and re-do. Loved ones will appreciate your due diligence Libra.
SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
One half of you wants to be sociable and take on the world, while the other half longs for some peace and quiet. The solution? Be well-balanced and juggle both sides! Focus on things that are working in your life, and solidify them – plus be proactive about partnerships. Under the influence of Venus, a family relationship is set to improve.
Home is where the heart is, as you spend quality time with family members. You’re in the mood to fix something around the house or to patch up a problematic relationship with a relative. Mars/ Pluto aspects boost your ambition and focus on Friday, when you communicate with extra confidence and charisma.
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Joining a social group or sporting club in your local community brings mutual benefits, as you’re keen to connect with a diverse range of people. Don’t expect instant results though. Mercury moves into your domestic zone on Saturday, so it’s time to get talking with family members. You could also play host to friends who come over.
Be careful your spontaneous Sagittarian spirit doesn’t land you in unexpected trouble! You’re keen to communicate but, if you rush in and say the first thing on your mind, you could find yourself regretting your haste. With the Sun, Venus and Jupiter in your travel zone, many adventurous Archers will soon head off on an overseas trip.
CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
It’s all about money honey, as Monday’s Full Moon stirs up trouble in your money zones. Fortunately, Venus and Jupiter come to the rescue and (if you’re a clever Crab) you’ll pal up with a financially astute person who helps you find ways to develop a second stream of income. The more proactive you are, the better off you will be.
17
Are money matters on your mind? With Venus visiting your joint finances zone from August 12 until September 6, find ways to boost your cash flow via financial partnerships, joint ventures or creative collaborations. Avoid taking risks though … a cautious and conservative Capricorn approach is the safest way to go.
Have you checked your insurance policy lately? If you’re like most people, then the answer is probably no. This means that you may not be sure what your home or business is actually covered for, so make sure you check the details. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) estimated that between 27 per cent and 81 per cent of Australian homes are underinsured by 10 per cent or more compared to the current rebuilding costs. According to ASIC the underinsurance problem in Australia can be due to a number of factors, including: • the burden of estimating rebuilding costs rests with the consumer, who generally does not have reliable or comprehensive enough tools to make a correct estimate • the scale of a disaster can contribute to the extent to which a consumer is underinsured; there is a risk there will be a jump in building costs • sums insured may not increase over time, or not increase at a rate that is in line with building costs generally • consumers may make a choice to accept a degree of underinsurance to achieve a certain premium value • for contents cover, sums insured often don’t recognise new purchases made by a household. So what can you do to limit your risk of falling into the ‘underinsured’ category? Review your insurance cover and think about those points above when you do. Ask yourself the tough questions. Are you covered for fire, flood damage or for loss of business income resulting from these events? Is your cover for current market value to rebuild and furnish your home or business? Be aware of the process if you need to make a claim; and use a camera to document the condition of your business stock and your personal belongings (and mark an annual date in your calendar to update these records). This will help you make a claim in the event of a loss. Use a safe-deposit box or a safe to store your insurance policies and photographic documentation and make sure to back up all business computer files. If a storm or natural disaster strikes, thoroughly check your home, business and belongings for any evidence of damage, which often can go unnoticed.

Motivation and confidence levels are high, so make the most of the positive planetary aspects.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION
BROOKE WELLINGTON Just because it’s easy doesn’t make it correct being fit and healthy? The energy you get from your body performing at its optimal. Your energy increases, your mood is better and life just seems easier when you don’t have to worry about constantly being sick. I’ve had a chronic illness and knowing it’s now my choice, the quality of my health makes me appreciate the good all the more.
How does fitness feature in your life? I’ve always been interested in helping people. My job aspirations have always been some form of giving back to people; it happened that the best way I am able to do this is with my hands as a massage therapist. I fell into it when I chose not to go to university at the end of year 12 because my health was bad. I took six months off and in that time I found the massages I gave relatives helped them and I wanted to help others.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
Top three tips for good health? 1. Watch what you eat. Stay out of processed foods and make the effort to eat healthy meals and snack better. Treats aren’t bad but we shouldn’t be having them at every meal. 2. Smart exercise. Just doing weights, or just cardio, or just eating healthy aren’t enough alone. Our bodies need balance and that means working on fitness through cardio, muscle strengthening with weights and eating healthy – all work together to improve our health. 3. Look after yourself. All of this means nothing if people don’t listen to what their bodies are telling them. It’s easy to get over worked, tired and sick and ignore the signs our bodies are giving us. We need to listen and realise we are only capable of so much. If you push yourself to far that’s when your health suffers.
What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Team sports. I’ve always been a part of teams since a child and the social interactions while working together and getting healthy gives me a boost no matter the result.
Stretching. We all carry so much baggage from our daily life. Taking five minutes to stop and breathe and stretch can help stop the world weighing on our shoulders. Biggest health/fitness misconception? Diets are a good thing. Wrong. We need balanced diets not fad crazes or quick fixes. Healthy living and eating is what people should strive for. What do you consider the biggest benefit of
A daily ‘must do’?
How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? I’m not perfect and sometimes I fall into the trap of ‘I’ll do it tomorrow instead’ more often than I would like. I stay motivated by thinking of the feeling of when my body is healthy, when you’re getting results from hard work. When you’ve been healthy and fit it’s easy to miss the feeling. Push through the ‘later’ mentality... once I’m exercising the endorphins always make me enjoy pushing myself. Freestyle - anything else you want to say? It’s easy to listen to what the world is telling us about health and fitness but just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it’s correct.

You wouldn’t keep your pet like this. But hidden away in sheds across Australia, hens who are just as smart and sensitive as the family pet spend every waking moment in a cage — all for the sake of a cheap egg. She cannot sit comfortably or stretch her wings. Without the ability to exercise, her body is weak. Chances are that she, or one of her cage mates, is living
with an untreated broken bone. But trapped in a cage, in a shed with thousands of cages, no-one is ever likely to notice. Here she will spend 30 long hours to produce just one cage egg. The first time she will see the outside world — the world she was meant to live in — will be on the last day of her life, as she is trucked to the slaughterhouse.

liver is one of the most important organs for detoxing your body
It seems like everyone is promoting some sort of detoxification or ‘detox’ product to get you healthy. The human body has managed to detoxify itself for a couple million years, so before you pour some processed rubbish into your system that may do more harm than good, try using ‘real’ food! Good, nutritious, ‘real’ food will let the organs of your body do the job they are designed to do and that’s way better than any product, no matter how appealing the marketing! A healthy liver is the primary organ to neutralise and eliminate toxins as it transforms toxins into a form that allows them to be successfully carried out of the body. But if the body’s toxic burden gets too heavy, from junk ‘nonfood’ or even dodgy detox products, the liver can become overwhelmed and unable to neutralise hazardous debris in the blood stream. A healthy gut will perform regular healthy bowel movements that are absolutely essential for removing toxins from the body. We should be eliminating the waste from the meals that we consume, along with the waste from the microorganisms in our gut, about every 24-hour period. If this does not happen, the waste can become a breeding ground for hazardous micro-organisms and parasites, which leads to a putrefaction process and greatly increases the release of endotoxins throughout the bloodstream. This can then overwhelm the liver and create a vicious cycle of toxicity that affects everything in the body. Also kidneys are an essential detoxification organ that pulls urea out of the body. Poorly functioning kidneys lead to elevated toxicity, particularly with chemicals such as ammonia, which is extremely toxic to the brain. Poor kidney elimination is also related to blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. So a well fed, healthy body is well able to handle all its own maintenance and detoxification if you look after it with some wholesome food. I’ll be picking the organic veg over the detox powder next time I’m at the shop.

Two snakes are common in Penrith... the red belly and the brown snake
VIEW FROM ABOVE
Unusual warm weather sparks snake warning
Following God’s word is worth it
Well it’s coming up to that time of year again. In the warmer summer months, snakes become more active and with this snake bites more frequent. The unseasonable warm weather has meant we have seen several snake bites in July. This is unusual and does not bode well for the upcoming summer months in terms of potential snake bites for our cats and dogs. Dogs are inquisitive creatures that seek out and chase snakes. Unfortunately this results in snake bites, usually around the head and legs. Cats are also susceptible to snake bites, especially those that like to hunt. Snakes are timid creatures and generally wish to stay away from humans and pets. It is often our pets seeking these creatures out that leads to the problems. Trying to minimise areas where snakes are likely to hide will decrease the likelihood of snakes and potential snake bites. Wood piles, clutter and longer grass tends to give snakes areas to hide in our backyards. Our pets tend to snoop around leading to snake bites. If you suspect a snake has bitten your pet, try to keep your pet calm and relaxed and seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. The earlier a pet is seen after a bite, the higher the chances of recovery. If you can identify the snake it is helpful to the veterinarian. However, do not try to catch or kill a snake. If the snake is dead then you can bring it along to the veterinarian for identification. A snake bite detection kit can be performed on your pet’s urine or blood to help determine whether they have been bitten and by what type of snake. In the Penrith area we tend to see two main types of venomous snakes; either red belly black snakes or brown snakes. Both are potentially deadly. The brown snake tends to cause more neurological symptoms such as collapse and difficulty breathing. The red belly black snake is more likely to cause haemolysis and breakdown of blood. However either snake can cause both symptoms with disastrous consequences if left untreated. Treatment involves the administration of an anti venom. Anti venom is very expensive and can mean treatment for snake bite is costly. Most animal health insurance will cover this cost.
Is following God worth it? Sadly, some people, who because of their understanding of who God is and what he is like, think that being a Christian and following Jesus is a crazy idea! It is important that our understanding of God fits with the real picture of what He is actually like. See what one of the Bible’s Old Testament Psalms says of God; “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He does not treat us as our sins deserve... For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear (honour) Him.” Consider too, Jesus’s words in the New Testament book of John; “I have come so that they may have life, and have it to the full. I am the good shepherd... who lays down his life for the sheep.” This experience of God who is full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in love; who in which Jesus lays down His life for us so that we can have new life and a fresh start with Him, and the promise of eternal life, is an experience that Christian people have known, enjoyed and rejoiced in throughout the centuries. Their experience matches that of the Apostle Peter, who when at first, somewhat unsure of his decision to follow Jesus, was asked by Jesus to make a call about what he intended to do; to follow or not to follow. Peter’s reply is sensational; “Lord, to whom else shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that are the Holy One of God.” He is worth it.

In his continuing search for the rather weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel, David Ellis says it’s 154 years this month since Phoebe Ann Moses was born in Darke County, Ohio, who went on to become one of the most popular entertainers of 19th and 20th century America. Who, you are likely asking? Start thinking Annie Oakley, the sharp-shooter extraordinaire who could hit a playing card edge-on from 30 paces, and blast the glowing end off a cigarette held in the lips of husband and fellow American West showman Frank E Butler from the same distance. And who once also shot a cigarette out of the mouth of Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm II when he saw her show while visiting America – to the heart-stopping horror of all in the Kaiser’s entourage. Annie nonchalantly blasted holes through playing cards thrown over the heads of outdoor audiences across America, could shoot moving targets backwards while aiming through a mirror, and once beat marksman Frank in a highly-publicised charity shooting competition. And when the 1.52m (5ft) Annie met famous Chief Sitting Bull in 1884 while performing in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, he was so impressed with her skills that he bestowed upon her the Native-American name “Little Sure Shot”. Botswana celebrated Country Women’s Association partners with local public school to broaden cultural knowledge
KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_
fter 12 months of learning about every aspect of the African country Botswana, the Penrith branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) completed their study with their annual International Day this week. The Penrith CWA building’s interior was decorated with traditional African wares for the event held on Monday, August 4, with many of the group’s members wearing white jackets, a colour traditionally worn by people from Botswana at formal events.
A
Penrith CWA International Officer, Lyn Hirst, has been teaching the local women all about the country from her own experience as a traveller. “This is my first International Day and I have loved every minute of it. It has been an interesting study this year,” she said. Also inside the Penrith CWA building were Botswana-themed projects completed by local Year 6 students from Penrith South Public School, who also studied the country in partnership with the CWA. “We go to the school and we introduce the topic to them. The school then works with the topic and the students create projects, which are on display here today,” Mrs Hirst said.

Lions Club deliver new workshop space for village

This new woodwork space will be buzzing on Tuesday afternoons KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_
esidents at Emu Plains’ Edinglassie Village were able to test out their new on-site woodworking shed this week, which is up and running thanks to the help of the local Lions Club. Members of the Emu Plains Lions Club were approached by two staff members at the village, both recently inducted as ‘Friends of Lions’, who were looking for some assistance in setting up a workshop for residents. The Lions Club reviewed an existing workshop that hadn’t been used in three years, except for storage, and got to work. “The guys living in the village were looking for something to do so we were happy to offer our assistance,” said Alan Cooper of the Emu Plains Lions Club. “We’ve spent the past few months fixing

Most tuition centres are franchises. The Tuition Place is independent and local. This gives you three important advantages: 1. Teaching methods and resources are tailored for the children of the Penrith area, not dictated by a franchisor from far away. 2. If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly. 3. The tuition is more affordable, because a big chunk of what you pay doesn’t go straight to a franchisor.
Specialist Maths or English tuition for all ages.
