COVER STORY

Nollsie keeps it fresh with Evermore collaboration and has Sia in his sights KATE REID @kate_reid6

hen you turn on the TV these days it’s hard to flick through the stations without coming across some kind of talent reality show. From ‘The X Factor’ to ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ to ‘The Voice’, it’s clear that us Aussies love a good competition. But it was ‘Australian Idol’, which premiered in 2003 that rebooted the talent show genre. Coming in as runner up on that very first season was Shannon Noll – aka ‘Nollsie’– who has managed to sustain a successful career in the music business for over a decade now. It’s pretty impressive considering the numerous contestants who have come and gone during that time. Talking to Shannon about his success he believes the secret is to hit the road as quickly as possible. “I think it’s really important to get out and tour for the people who obviously put you in, that gave you the opportunity that you’ve got by voting for you and supporting you,” he said. “So I think it’s very important to get out and perform for those people and give something back to them otherwise 12 months down the track there’s another show on and there’s another crop coming through and it’s easy to get forgotten.” Taking his own advice on board Shannon will be heading out on the ‘We Only Live Once’ tour, which will see the boy from Condobolin stopping off at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, November 21. Audiences will get a chance to hear his most recent single, the uplifting anthem ‘We Only Live Once’. A play on the term YOLO (You Only Live Once), the motto is something that Shannon lives and breathes. “I sort of don’t do things in halves, ever,” he said. “With what I do as a career you come across people who are in dire situations nearly every gig... so it sort of reinforces that mentality that you don’t second guess things and just go for it – I suppose in moderation of course. You don’t want to be risking your life or anything like that,” he laughed.

W

“But I think if you want to go and do something just go and do it because 10 years down the track you’ll be kicking yourself if you don’t do it and you always wished you could. It’s better to have a go at something and find out either way.” Along with the new tracks, audiences will get the chance to re-live some of Shannon’s biggest singles from the last decade. “People mightn’t have heard them for a while but once they hear these ones they sort of take them back to wherever they heard them the first time,” he said. Shannon is currently working on his next album, which should be out either this year or early next year. He wrote most of the songs while living in Melbourne where he worked with Jon Hume from Evermore, who took on co-writer duties on many of the tracks. “He’s an amazing talent so it was terrific to be able to spend some time with him in the studio,” Shannon said. After six albums and 10 ARIA Top 10 hits Shannon’s aim on this new release is to try something a little different and create a very diverse album. Along with his work with Hume, there’s also collaborations with Ilan Kidron from electro-house and dance group The Potbelleez, and a rap inspired track that Shannon describes as “an ‘Eye of the Tiger’ type song”. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the feedback from some of these different songs. We wanted to just experiment a bit and try some new things and just see how they come up,” he said. Looking to the future Shannon would love to collaborate with Aussie singersongwriter Sia, who has not only become a hit worldwide through her solo work, but has written tracks with some of the music industry’s biggest names including Eminem, Rihanna, Beyonce and Katy Perry. His admiration for the talented artist has led to the inclusion of her recent hit song ‘Chandelier’ in the ‘We Only Live Once’ tour set list. “I really like her voice,” he said. “I think she’s a genuine ‘singer’ singer. She sings her heart out and I think that’s great and I really admire that in her and she’s a great songwriter as well so I’d love to get the opportunity to work with her.” Shannon Noll will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, November 21. Tickets are $40. Call 9625 5500.

enrith born Jason Dundas has become a familiar face on Australian TV screens. Between his hosting duties on travel show ‘Getaway’ to MTV’s ‘Total Request Live’ the 32-year-old has had the chance to travel the world and meet some amazing people. And now he’s taking on an exciting new challenge as the host of Channel 7’s reality show ‘The Big Adventure’. The show takes 12 contestants and puts them on a secret island in the South Pacific to battle it out for the chance to win a million dollars. “We combine all the elements of what people love,” Dundas said. “We have the good docu-drama stuff, we have huge, big games and high action, we have stuff for the whole

family, we have big, beautiful pictures. It’s kind of a combination of everything. It’s almost reality TV 2.0.” Each week the contestants take on challenges on the Sky Rig, a stadium suspended over the beautiful waters that surround the island. The winner then gets a chance to dig in the Treasure Grid in the hope of finding a golden key, which may or may not unlock the ultimate million dollar prize. “There’s a sense of ‘The Hunger Games’ psychology to the show,” Dundas said. “They have to work as teams together to achieve a certain victory and then the team has to go against themselves.” And it’s no wonder Dundas was offered hosting duties on ‘The Big Adventure’. He has a palpable energy for life and a willingness to grab every opportunity that comes to him with both hands. ‘The Big Adventure’ airs Sundays at 6:30pm on Channel 7.

CHATTER ON THE BOX

NATHAN TAYLOR TV News

The Flash December 3 FOX8

Former ‘How I Met Your Mother’ star Neil Patrick Harris has been announced as the host of the hardest TV gig in the world… The Academy Awards. After hosting the Tony Awards successfully for many years as well as the Emmys, this will be Harris’s first attempt at the Academy Awards. The Oscars will air live Monday, February 24 on Channel 9.

Could a remake of ‘Bewitched’ be coming to our screens in the not to distant future? Well, I certainly hope not but, if you believe reports, Sony Pictures TV is shopping a new version of the hit 60’s show to networks in the US. I’ve never been a big fan of remaking TV shows especially if the original is still popular some 50 years later.

Fans of new Channel Nine show ‘Gotham’ will be pleased to hear the show has been awarded a full season by FOX in America. This means 22 episodes of the Batman-inspired drama are on their way. The show is doing well for 9 with over a million viewers each Sunday.

Have you ever wanted to be hypnotised? Well, famous hypnotist Peter Powers is looking for people to be part of his upcoming Channel Seven show ‘Mesmerised’. Powers is looking for people over 18 to audition. Visit mesmerised. castasugar.com to apply.

I’m extremely annoyed at the way Channel Nine has treated ‘Big Brother’ this year – they really should be ashamed! Not only are we forced to watch it at different timeslots every night but they have now cut the show from six episodes per week to just four.

Lastly, Foxtel has confirmed an airdate for new US superhero series ‘The Flash’. The highly anticipated show will premiere on FOX8 on Wednesday, December 3. The series stars Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, a scientist who is exposed to radiation from a particle accelerator.

Minchin’s music takes Dahl classic to a whole new level t’s hard to think of a more perfect collaboration than acclaimed children’s author Roald Dahl – who has created some of the most loved yet twisted childhood tales ever written – and the quirky comedian musician Tim Minchin. It’s therefore no wonder that fans are rejoicing in the news that the critically acclaimed ‘Matilda the Musical’ – based on the children’s book by Dahl and with music from Minchin – will be heading to Sydney next August. The Royal Shakespeare Company’s ‘Matilda the Musical’ is currently appearing on Broadway and London’s West End and has received numerous accolades. The story follows five-year-old Matilda who with the support of her teacher Miss Honey uses her incredible intelligence and a little bit of magic to take on her horrible parents and the evil school headmistress Miss Trunchbull. The script for the musical was written by British playwright Dennis Kelly,

PENTATONIX THAT’S CHRISTMAS TO ME Out Now

When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week – along with their oversharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humour, heartache and redemption that only families can provide. The family drama makes this a story that many people will be able to relate to. ‘This is Where I Leave You’ is based on a novel of the same name by author Jonathon Tropper ,which has received critical acclaim as an emotionally raw novel about love, marriage, divorce, family, and the ties that bind – whether we like it or not. Tropper is also credited as screenwriter for the film. The film was directed by Shawn Levy who also worked on 2011’s ‘Real Steel’ and the 2013 comedy ‘The Internship’.

And so begins the onslaught of Christmas songs in department stores, on the radio and available for purchase in stores. It may seem that Christmas is months away, but the reality is, there’s only about eight weeks, so what better time to let everyone know about one of the first Christmas album releases of the season than right now! Following on from their recent EP, ‘PTX Vol. 3,’ vocal sensations and a cappella group Pentatonix return with a festive new release, ‘That’s Christmas To Me!’ Pentatonix shot to stardom when their covers of songs ‘Gangnam Style’ by PSY, ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ by Gotye featuring Kimbra and their ‘Evolution of Beyoncé’ mash-up went viral on YouTube. Covers of classic Christmas songs such as ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’, ‘It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year’, ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ and the viral hit from the ‘Frozen’ Soundtrack, ‘Let It Go’ feature on the album as well as a Pentatonix original track, ‘That’s Christmas To Me’. This talented group of singers arrange covers of songs in creative and unique ways and if past experiences are anything to go by, their upcoming Christmas album is not to be missed!

Bin 65 never fails to satisfy DAVID ELLIS

WW10576

Lindeman’s Bin 65 Chardonnay has long been one of the best value for money Chardonnays in this country (and in international markets too). It’s a drop that at a current $10 never fails to satisfy for flavour, toss-it-down enjoyment and price. And interestingly while launched onto the market here 23 years ago, it had in fact been in production for six years before that – to supply the Northern Hemisphere that had taken with gusto to the drink’s fruit-driven and easy-drinking style – and when it was eventually released in Australia in 1991 the Bin 65 was an overnight success here as well. The current release 2014 made from fruit sourced across a wide area of South Eastern Australia maintains the tradition; with lovely fruit salad, fig, peach and toasty oak aromas that follow through delightfully on the palate. Enjoy it on its own pre-dining as the conversation gets going, in the party room, as well as indoors or out where it makes for a terrific match at the table with all manner of seafoods. And you’ll notice that its new label has had some changes made to it. A sketch of Dr Henry John Lindeman’s 1885 Cawarra homestead is now set within a triumphal wreath featuring Australian native eucalyptus and gum nuts; and under these the Latin phrase ‘Felicitas in Vitae,’ meaning ‘In Life Happiness’ – from Dr Lindeman’s own favourite quote “the one purpose of wine is to bring happiness.” And doesn’t this just live up to its reputation!

VOLUNTEER TODAY PRIMARY ETHICS TEACHERS NEEDED

To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

“

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

”

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved.

entertainment

While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices.

Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

Change of season calls for new make-up KATHERINE TWEED

life & style

a little bit of concealer on any blemishes or dark areas. I’ve adopted Clinique’s CC cream as my go-to for coverage this season and for the evenings I’ll be making sure it stays in place with a dusting of powder. Now we can’t go through the season without adding some colour to our cheeks and although reaching for that shimmery bronzer is so easy, this season is about the matte look so put away those shimmers. Napoleon Perdis Matte Bronze is the perfect product for this and I will be dusting it over my cheeks, neck and décolletage but not before I contour my cheeks with a dark pink or peach matte blush. Your brows should of course be filled in with a pencil or powder but keep them looking soft. Eye makeup this season is to be kept to a minimum – just a lick of mascara on your lashes (I love Benefit Cosmetic’s They’re Real) will do or invest in a lash tint. For the evening, a liquid eyeliner is all that you’ll need to take your look from office to cocktail bar. With such a basic, clean look for the summer it is so important to give your look a little oomph with some lip colour. Tints are very popular this season but, keeping with the matte theme, I will be wearing Napoleon Perdis Mattetastic in ‘Audrey’ – the colour is absolutely amazing! With your face complete, there is just one finishing touch that you need and that’s nails. I’ll be keeping a nude pink colour as my every-day nail colour and when I need a bit of colour I’ll reach for my Essie nail colour in ‘Tart Deco’ or ‘Sittin’ Pretty’.

katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

This spring it’s all about matte colours so forget that bronzer from last year!

It is so easy to get into a makeup routine that, out of convenience, you keep up through all four seasons of the year, forgetting that like fashion, makeup trends change from season to season too. When you get into a routine and when you find products that work perfectly for you, it can be difficult to break away and try something new, but a new season calls for change and if there is any season that is worth making a change for, it is this one. As the weather heats up and we go from the goose-bump generating, freezing cold, breezy weather to the hot, dry and sweaty conditions that come with spring and the approach of summer, a change in makeup routine is not only essential to keep up with the season’s trends but it can make you feel a whole lot more comfortable. Throughout autumn and winter this year, full-bodied foundations in pale colours, dark lipsticks, smokey eyes and contoured cheekbones were favoured in the evenings. Daytime makeup was all about creating a dewy look – remember the influx of highlighters and illuminators we saw hitting the shelves in the makeup aisle? While it would be easy to carry these looks over to the hotter months, the spring/summer makeup trends are very different and honestly, they are worth breaking the routine for. Full-bodied foundations look great and give the impression of the smoothest of smoothest complexions but they are so impractical for summer. Have you ever heard someone say, “her face looks like it is melting”? This is the comment people will be making about you if you pack on the foundation in the hotter months. Your makeup will be ruined within 20 minutes of standing in the heat – if not as a direct result from you sweating, but also from the amount of times you will touch your face to check whether you’ve got beads forming on your brow. Swap the foundation for something with a light coverage – this can be a tinted moisturiser, alphabet cream (think cc or bb) or even a liquid foundation with light coverage – and use

Most losses happen in the first few months when you are getting used to the new piece

WW13369

Why is jewellery insurance so important? Many couples that visit us at York Jewellers ask about jewellery insurance and if it’s worth having. In my opinion yes, it is. Especially for something as valuable and precious as your engagement ring. If you are going to damage or lose your engagement ring it generally happens in the first few months while you’re still getting used to having it on your finger – and in between trying to remember not to leave it somewhere whilst washing your hands or knocking it on something when you walk past! If you think of it in comparison to a new car or phone, it takes a little while for you to become used to driving it and using it – only in this case wearing it. No matter how low the setting is or how well the ring fits there is always a risk. We recommend that our clients look into taking out insurance on their treasured pieces to avoid being left unable to replace it like for like should the unthinkable happen and it is lost or damaged. In my opinion Q Report is the best jewellery insurance available and we are proud to offer this service to our York Jewellers clients. How do you go about insuring your jewellery? We can take care of that for you before you even walk out of the store with your ring. How’s that for piece of mind! We will give you a quote to insure it for 12 months and arrange a cover note within a few minutes, followed shortly by a beautifully presented booklet with photos and details of your ring to ensure that all information is at hand if you need it. Why Q Report? Q Report offer very comprehensive cover and allow you to wear your loved pieces with confidence. They protect against loss, theft and damage worldwide so there’s no need to upgrade your policy when you travel. You will also be guaranteed to be able to return to us at York Jewellers to assist you in replacing the ring if the time should ever come. This is very important to us as we want our clients to be able to replace their beautiful piece with the same quality workmanship and diamonds or gemstones as the original.

HOROSCOPES

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Have you been feeling stuck in a bit of a rut? Mighty Mars (moving through your public spotlight zone) encourages you to shake up your reputation, take some calculated risks and reach for the stars. Being creative and proactive is a powerful combination on the weekend. If you are involved with a club be inclusive.

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Venus (your ruling planet) boosts romantic prospects and workplace relations. And you’ll find the more creatively you communicate with family, friends and colleagues, the more satisfying the week will be. Single Bulls – don’t accept second or third best. Attached Taureans, it’s time to be much more patient and understanding.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

JOANNE MADELINE MOORE

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro. tumblr.com www.twitter.com/ JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2014.

Geminis are the eternal students of the zodiac – your active mind longs for constant stimulation and regular information updates. And your restless nature is drawn to travel, where you can soak up new experiences, languages, lifestyles and cultures. This week is a terrific time to network like a pro and make the most of your international contacts, as Mercury (your ruling planet) links up with Jupiter.

Love is in the air as Venus and Neptune increase romantic vibes. If you are attached, then plan something special with your partner. Singles, you could fall for someone who is a family friend. Librans adore living in the lap of luxury but don’t overdo it or you’ll end up being the most beautiful but bankrupt on the block.

Star predictions for the week beginning October 26

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

With Venus visiting your sign until November 17 you have the power to persuade others over to your point-of-view with your Scorpio charm and sex appeal. Don’t overdo it though – strive to be powerfully persuasive, rather than compulsively controlling. Plus, when it comes to relationships, aim to be generous rather than jealous.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Unresolved problems from the past could come back to test you. Don’t dither! Make a commitment to resolve these issues once and for all; then you can wipe the slate clean and move on. Mercury and Jupiter activate your adventurous, curious, restless, freedom-loving side this weekend and many Sagittarians will be fired-up to tackle an ambitious individual project with a long timeline.

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

You can expect a positive week – as long as you don’t let minor matters get to you. No one wants to be around a cranky Crab! Plus aim to be more proactive, especially when it comes to close relationships. Instead of stewing when other people don’t automatically understand what you want, tell them exactly what you need.

With dynamic Mars charging through your sign until December 5 you’re amped up to the max, and are determined to power through projects and get things done ASAP. But Venus, Neptune and Pluto encourage you to adopt a more subtle style on the weekend. A softly-softly approach will help you sail through any problems.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Cat creativity is high this week, as Neptune stimulates your colorful imagination. Leos love putting on a spectacular show and, with Venus visiting your domestic zone, it’s also a wonderful week to play Domestic Goddess (or Master Chef) and entertain family and friends at home. You’re feeling positive and are keen to impress others.

Your boredom threshold is set on low and you don’t have the patience to put up with boring people or long explanations. So strive to extricate yourself from such situations in a tactful way. Communication and conversation are the buzz words on the weekend as the pace picks up and you share opinions.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Be extra diligent when dealing with finances – there may be less cash in the kitty than you think. Mercury encourages you to read, study and learn from financially literate people who can teach you about smart money management. There’s also much satisfaction to be gained from contributing your talents to your local community.

Intellectual prowess will only get you so far in this world. Making smart decisions and wise choices often depends on following your gut instincts… and that’s where Pisceans excel. And this week your intuition is firing. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great Bill Gates: “Often you have to rely on your intuition.”

memories tends to have a more lasting impact on happiness than buying objects

Can money buy you happiness? An uncountable number of hours have been dedicated to studying the relationship between money and happiness. Researchers from across the world have published report after report on the matter – and some of the results may surprise you. It’s time to answer the age old question – can the contents of your personal bank account have any effect on your happiness and wellbeing? Spend more to enjoy more While most of us are keen bargain hunters, those willing to spend more on their purchases could actually get more enjoyment out of them. This is according to a Cornell Food and Brand Lab study, published in September. The research focused on how diners rated their food experiences when eating a buffet. Surprisingly, the participants who dined at the higher priced buffet reported the food was tastier than those paying half as much – even though the food was exactly the same. The researchers believed that people were setting their expectations for the meal based on the price, and failing to readjust once they actually consumed the food. Spend on others to improve your own life How you spend your money is more important than how much money you make, according to researchers from the University of British Columbia and Harvard Business School. A recent study found that employees who spent a larger portion of their income and bonus on others or charity reported greater general happiness than those who spent only on themselves. The researchers also discovered participants who were asked to spend small amounts of money on others reported more optimism and positivity than those who had to treat themselves. Buy memories, not things While experiences can be fleeting, buying things is unlikely to result in sustainable happiness. It is better to spend your money on memories rather than objects, according to a study from San Francisco State University. This research found that not only are experiences better at increasing our immediate happiness, but they can also prove to be better value for money in the long term as well.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

I am a single mother of two young very active boys. Exercise has always been a passion of mine – from soccer, to touch football, cycling to high level age group Ironman Triathlete. I competed at the Hawaiian World Ironman Championships in 2013 in a time of 10 hours and 13mins (3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42km marathon). Despite achieving this ultimate goal it came at a huge personal cost; training consisted of 24+ hours a week and living off 2 litres of Pepsi max a day combined with a very low fat high carb diet. I became mentally and physically exhausted and fell into a deep depression. Through learning how to create a balanced lifestyle between nutrition (eating good fats and unprocessed food), fitness and life I have now been able to help others through similar situations! Top three tips for good health? - Drink water first thing in the morning and then constantly throughout the day. - Consume foods that are as close to what Mother Nature intended. (If it has an ingredient list and you can’t pronounce it, you shouldn’t be eating it.) - Move everyday; not just training but getting up and going for a walk. A daily ‘must do’? Get out there and play with your kids. Wether you’re double bouncing each other on a trampoline, riding your bikes or kicking a ball, our kids learn from what we do and not what we say.

Listen to your body as it will tell you if you are doing something right or wrong

This week Jessica Galea, owner of NewStart Personal Training, has written in to us:

until you can’t go further and then resting until you can! I get a big dose of endorphins during those sessions and a bigger boost to my metabolism in the 4-6 hours afterwards. It’s a win/win really! How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? Setting goals both short and long term helps me to remember why I want to do exercise and stay healthy. Remembering how I felt after the last session both physically and mentally helps too. Setting up my environment including training with a friend and also putting out exercise clothes for the morning ( I have been known to sleep with my swimmers under the pillow so they are warm on a cold winter day!) is a tip too.

Pregnancy is an absolutely beautiful time in your life. You have nine glorious months of feeling and watching your baby grow inside you, preparing rooms and shopping for essentials for when your bundle arrives. While it’s all sunshine that you are expecting a gorgeous baby, sometimes it’s hard to see the special side of things when you are constantly peeing, you have permanent reflux and you are starving. The reality is growing a child is hard work. It’s hard to maintain your intentions to be healthy and active when you are pregnant, when you feel sick, tired and craving all sorts of foods! I know this because I’m 26 weeks pregnant with my third child. It has taken me two pregnancies to realise the most important thing is to listen to your body. I don’t mean that little voice that says “EAT McDONALDS”! I mean listen to your body’s energy. When you feel good, then eat right and be active. But on those days when you feel sick and really lethargic, rest and eat those foods you are craving, but in moderation. My first two pregnancies were learning curves for me. I wasn’t active at all with my first and I ate for four... every meal! With my second I ate a bit better and tried to walk often. It’s been 4.5 years since my last pregnancy so I have had a bit of time to make some major diet and lifestyle changes. I have been CrossFitting for about 2.5 years and I now try to maintain a natural diet of pasture fed meats, fruit and veg, nuts and seeds, a little full fat dairy and I have removed wheat and processed foods. I am still CrossFitting but I am definitely not training to the same intensity as 6 months ago. I am trying to maintain some fitness and to eat foods that will benefit me and my growing baby. At the end of the day, every woman and every pregnancy is totally different. My point is, don’t be too hard on yourself during pregnancy and do what feels right.

Biggest health/fitness misconception? Being slim/skinny doesn’t necessarily mean you are fit, healthy and happy. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? For me it’s about being confident in who I am. Exercise and a healthy lifestyle helps with my mood and overall mental health. “A happy mum makes happy kids.” What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Running has always been my go to exercise, but I have had a toe injury for 10 months which meant having to change my style of training from running to a High Intensity Interval Training to maintain my fitness. HIIT training involves pushing yourself

Blood transfusions can be performed for pets

When life is hard, there is help nearby

As pet care becomes more advanced, it is becoming increasingly common to give unwell pets blood transfusions. Blood transfusions may be needed for many reasons and often animals that receive blood transfusions are saved. Why is blood given? There are many reasons why ill animals need blood transfusions – the most common being trauma, autoimmune disease, snake bites or blood loss. Blood contains many different components and can be life saving. Blood not only contains red blood cells that carry oxygen, but also carries platelets which are vital for clotting. Blood also contains clotting factors and protein and can be beneficial in animals with severe infections and clotting problems. Are there blood types in animals? Yes! Some animals are easier to give blood transfusions to than others. Both dogs and cats have different blood types but interestingly, dogs can receive blood from any other dog as long as it is their first transfusion. After the first transfusion, dogs need to be blood typed to avoid reactions. Just like humans, some dogs are universal donors whose blood can be given to any other dog. Cats are a bit more complex and always need to be blood typed to avoid reactions. We have even previously performed blood transfusions on very sick ferrets! Where do we get the blood from? Obtaining blood can be difficult as we need donor animals. We will often use large breed, young and healthy animals as donors. The procedure is very simple and only takes 5-10 minutes. The donor animal is then placed on a drip and given a large meal to restore their energy levels. There is even a blood bank based in Melbourne where we can purchase blood products for animals. Blood transfusions are a gift for animals as they are usually life saving and immediately make a very sick animal feel better. They are not possible without donor animals and we are very grateful for our donors!

No one likes it when life gets hard. Whether it’s being confronted by sickness or death, unemployment or injury, relationship breakdown or financial uncertainty, none of us are actually out there looking for those things! Trials are hard! They bring distress. They can cause confusion. They bring uncertainty. The typical Australian response is often to say, “She’ll be right mate!” and press on, trying to draw comfort from the knowledge that there are probably others out there who are worse off. Others just try to grin and bear it, with a blind hope that things might get better. But surely there’s got to be a better way! The Apostle James, in his New Testament letter, urges that when we face trials to ask God. He says, “When you meet trials of various kinds... if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God who gives generously to all.” Here is a stunning promise! God promises that as you come to him, in trusting prayer, he will generously give you the wisdom and understanding you need to stand firm in these tough times. So often in tough times people cave in. They give up in despair and lose hope. James says that prayer and trust in God is the answer. Pray to God who will give you the strength and courage you need to press on. Trust in God who will give you his peace and a confidence to know that he is always working for your good and never for your harm. Confidence. Real hope. Peace. Patience. Understanding. Security. These are real differences that prayer to God can make to you when trials come knocking on your door. God is the one who will know how to answer.

Tom Mix was a silent movie star who died a very unusual death IN October 1940 the world mourned the loss of silent movie star Tom Mix who died in bizarre circumstances in a car crash in Arizona. At one stage earning up to US$17,500 a week (about $240,000 today), Mix made 291 full-length movies, with his press agent promoting him as a genuine cowboy, and a Wild West hero who’d fought in the Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion and the Boer War, as well as a Sheriff, a U.S. Marshal and a Texas Ranger. While he’d once been a ranch cowboy that was about it: in truth Tom Mix was an Army deserter who simply walked offcamp one day and never returned, and

was a drum major in a Cavalry Band in Oklahoma before heading to Hollywood to try his luck there in 1909. When sound movies arrived, he had difficulty making the transition and appeared in only nine before exiting stage left. Visitors to Florence in Arizona today can see a 60cm high iron statue of a riderless horse next to a dry creek bed in which Mix crashed his V8 Cord Phaeton sports car on October 12, 1940 – after he’d swung off the road at speed to avoid a wash-away, an aluminium suitcase on the back seat had speared forward, breaking his neck and crushing his skull. That “Suitcase of Death” is on display at the Tom Mix Museum in Oklahoma.

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

Odds against men over 50 Campaign raises awareness of osteoporosis risk in older men, pushes for more government funding CASSANDRA O’CONNOR @cassandra_o

orld Osteoporosis Day was held on Monday to raise awareness of the joint condition and the many lives it impacts. A global campaign carried out by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, this year’s World Osteoporosis Day encouraged men to visit the doctor and have their osteoporosis symptoms diagnosed and treated before they cause long term damage or result in injury. President of the International Osteoporosis Foundation John Kanis said that the lifetime risk of experiencing an osteo-

porotic fracture in men over the age of 50 years is up to 27 per cent higher than that of developing prostate cancer. He said men with a fracture are also more likely to put off getting help from the doctor than women. “Yet, an inadequate amount of health care resources are being invested in bone, muscle and joint diseases,” he said. “People should not have to live with the pain and suffering caused by osteoporosis as we can help prevent and control the disease.” Australian Professor Peter Ebeling said: “We must act now to ensure men not only live longer but also have a future free of pain and suffering caused by osteoporotic fractures.”

World Osteoporosis Day urged men to get checked by their doctors for fractures

Healthy recipes for normally sweet treats KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

onditions that sometimes come with age can often see local seniors give up on eating some of the sweet treats that they have always taken a special delight in enjoying. Giving up eating things like tea cake and scones with jam and cream is often recommended for seniors with conditions like diabetes, but Nepean Blue Mountains Medicare Local (NBMML) says that it doesn’t have to be this way. Dietitians held a special High Tea on Wednesday, October 15, to commemorate Veterans Health Week, inviting local veterans to enjoy some guilt-free sweets and learn about eating appropriately for their conditions. “The concept is based on the high tea layout but the difference is that it is a healthy high tea. We took common recipes and modified them suit the healthy guidelines,” said NBMML dietitian, Deepali Vasani. “Many people of this generation have conditions, like diabetes, and they need to watch their diets. We are trying to

C

The Medicare Local high tea last week was a big success show them that they can still enjoy some sweet treats if they learn how to modify their recipes.” The team at NBMML modified the recipes for short breads, pannecotta, tea cakes and other sweet treats by replacing ingredients like sugar with artificial sweeteners or fruit puree. Those who attended were also given the opportunity to learn from dietitians who not only spoke about recipe modifications, but also gave advice on ‘cooking for one’ and healthy snack ideas.

Watch could be a life saver

seniors

A new watch can help track the movements of vulnerable people NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

hristmas is just around the corner and it can be difficult finding the perfect gift for parents that have everything. If mum and dad are getting older and concerns are growing about their health and safety, the SOS Mobile Watch may be the answer for the Christmas stocking this year. Developed and released by Australian company mCareWatch earlier this year, the SOS Mobile Watch is an all-in-one standalone smartwatch, mobile phone, location finder and personal emergency alarm. It’s also the only waterproof device of its kind in the world, meaning it can be worn in the shower. Designed to assist the elderly, disabled or people with special needs, the SOS Mobile Watch helps families and carers stay connected and close to help if needed. There’s a SOS button that dials three preset emergency numbers when pressed and a built in microphone and speaker allowing

23

C

Available in a range of colours, the SOS Mobile Watch is a great Christmas gift idea hands free calls. The wearer doesn’t need to press anything when a call comes in as the watch can automatically answer from up to 20 family and friends’ pre-set numbers. Alarm reminders for medicine and appointments can also be set and a long battery life means it only needs to be charged once every few days. One of the useful and innovative features of the watch is its location finder. If someone has a condition, such as dementia, and they become lost and disoriented, a family

member or carer can track where they are by monitoring the mCareWatch dashboard on a computer, iPad or smartphone. It takes away the stress and worry a family member experiences if their loved one goes missing. Unlike the traditional ‘pendant’ style personal alarms which confine usage to limited areas such as the home, the SOS Mobile Watch can be worn out socialising or shopping, giving freedom and independence to the wearer. Carers also have the ability to establish

a safe area or perimeter, known as a ‘geofence’, for their loved one if needed. An SMS emergency alert is sent to the carer if their loved one exits the area or perimeter. The movements of the wearer can also be checked through the pedometer feature and if there’s little or no activity it may indicate something is wrong. The SOS Mobile Watch SMW-14 is available in white, black and burgundy and can be purchased online at www.mcarewatch. com.au.

he annual Doll, Bear and Craft Fair is expected to have local enthusiasts jumping for joy when it returns to Penrith for another year this weekend. The anticipated event, taking place on Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26, will see hundreds of toys, dolls, teddy bears and collectors items brought to the Museum of Fire. “The Museum of Fire is again excited to host the 26th annual Doll, Bear & Craft Fair. Each year the Museum works with bespoke craft producers to bring the local community and wider Sydney an opportunity to experience high quality, handmade and unique products,” said

Mark White, Executive Chairman of the Museum of Fire. The show gives local residents an opportunity to browse unique handmade products, dolls and accessories, wooden toys and furniture, dolls houses and supplies, teddy bear and teddy bear making supplies, aromatherapy products, craft bits and jewellery. There will be over 100 stalls to peruse and once local residents have seen all there is to see, they are welcome to stay and learn more about the Museum of Fire, which is a registered charity dedicated to telling the story of Fire and Rescue through objects, historic vehicles and interactive displays. The show will be taking place between 9.30am and 4pm on both days and costs just $5 for adults, $4 for concession holders and $2 for children.
