Life as an ambassador for the great Kenny Rogers

mitation is the highest form of flattery, as the saying goes. But a cover band is about more than just being able to perform the songs of a well known artist.

“We like to get the audiences involved, engage the audience, so that they have as much fun as we do,” Edwards said.

The show allows music fans the chance to experience a taste of the country music greats, Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers while also giving them the chance to experience a tribute to the legendary Johnny Cash.

“Johnny Cash, of course is no longer with us, so people do not have an opportunity to go and see Johnny Cash. However, coming to our show they’re going to walk away from there and they’re going to say, ‘that’s like seeing Johnny Cash, these guys are top notch’,” Edwards said.

And he loves knowing that thousands of fans have shared in their passion for these iconic performers.

“One of the best compliments I get is, someone will come up after the show and go, ‘you know what, I’m a really big Kenny Rogers fan, I always have been, and he would be proud of you, you nailed it,’ and that just makes me feel so good.”

For a member of a cover band there could be no greater joy than meeting the person whose music has inspired your

own musical career. Edwards has been lucky enough to meet Kenny Rogers on two occasions. Their first meeting was during a series of outdoor shows in Billings, Montana.

Edwards was approached by a promoter and informed that Rogers had seen his performance, liked what he saw and wanted him to come to a show.

“I got to go backstage and meet Kenny, we got a picture together and we chatted a little bit. The last thing he said to me when I was leaving, he said, ‘now don’t go out getting me into any trouble’. I took that to heart, I think of myself as a Kenny Rogers ambassador,” Edwards said.

When all is said and done, the reason why The Kings of Country get on stage each night and perform the songs of their heroes is simple.

“We love the music, we love the songs, never get tired of them, never get tired of delivering them because they come from the heart,” he said.

And clued in on all the tricks of the trade is Marty Edwards, Kenny Rogers impersonator with The Kings of Country.

“Number one, you’ve got to have the look for sure. Number two, you’ve got to have the sound and number three, which I think is just as important as the first two, it’s the mannerisms.”

Edwards has been performing with The Kings of Country for almost nine years now, along with Phillip Bauer (Johnny Cash) and Marion Deaton (Willie Nelson).

After meeting in Las Vegas at a convention, the three talented musicians decided they would combine their acts to bring audiences a broader experience, with music from some of the world’s biggest country artists.

“We’re looking at three absolutely huge legends in country music – Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers. All of us have worked very, very hard honing the character and studying the character. Because it’s more than just singing a Kenny Rogers song, we become the character that we’re portraying,” Edwards said.

“The characters themselves, they’re larger than life. They have such a longevity in the industry over years and years with so many hits.”

The Kings of Country have formed a special bond with Australian audiences since their first time touring down under.

“Our first year in Australia went very, very well so we keep coming back and having fun and it’s been great for us,” Edwards said.

“For us it’s kind of like coming home when we come to Australia. The audiences have been so receptive and treated us so well. People that we’ve met and become friends with go out of their way to help us out with whatever we need.”

This relationship with Australian audiences has inspired The Kings of Country to write a special tribute song, dedicated to some Aussie heroes. “‘God Bless Australia’, it’s a song and we dedicate it to the men and women of the Australian armed forces and I can tell you on more than one occasion singing this song my eyes get a little moist because it’s so well received by the people, it’s just our way of saying, ‘hey Australia we love you’,” Edwards said.

Audiences can expect to hear their favourite tracks from the country stars including Kenny Rogers’s hits ‘Lady’ and ‘The Gambler’. The Kings of Country also like to make sure their fans get an interac-

Circus comes to Tattersalls for Insider tour gig

onto different projects, some of the main players are still bringing heavy rock to the punters, including Dead Letter Circus, who will be appear at the Tattersalls Hotel on Wednesday, May 21.

The tour, named after their latest single ‘Insider’, will see the band play 19 shows across regional Australia following on from their recent January tour where they played the role of co-headliner alongside Karnivool.

Dead Letter Circus’s recent release, their sophomore album ‘The Catalyst Fire’, received much praise from fans and critics. They also made it to the number two spot on the ARIA charts, confirming that they still have a strong and passionate following.

The ensemble of young Yolngu men come from the Galiwin’ku community (Elcho Island) in North East Arnhem Land and have performed throughout Australia along with appearances in China and Taiwan.

Their show involves skill and discipline, incorporating traditional costumes and ochre, along with Galpu (spear throwing).

The new name, Djuki Mala, came about in 2013 as a way of keeping the meaning of the ‘Chooky Dancers’ while still reflecting the cultural background of the group members.

This is a show that will provide audiences with a blend of traditional and popular culture along with a good dose of laughter. The reception from audiences and critics alike has been positive, with Djuki Mala delivering an energetic and heart warming performance. DC’s Gotham has real potential The first trailer for the DC Comics produced show ‘Gotham’ was released last week and I must say I was very impressed. The trailer’s tone was quite dark and it certainly had the same feel as the Christopher Nolan ‘Dark Knight’ franchise. If the trailer is anything to go by it could do a lot better than Marvel’s attempt of ‘Agents of Shield’. ‘Gotham’ will air later this year.

Sad news out of the Channel Ten newsroom last Friday with the death of respected news reporter Harry Potter, aged 72. Potter joined Ten back in 1978 and in 2013 became the first recipient of the John Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award. Sandra Sully said: “Harry set the standard at TEN News for honour, dignity and integrity in journalism”.

Channel Nine’s new dating show ‘When Loves Comes To Town’ will premiere this Tuesday, May 20 at 8.30pm. Hosted by Natalie Gruzlewski, the brand series will visit 10 towns as 12 unlucky-in-love ladies meet the two most eligible single men in each town.

Great news for fans of paranormal show ‘Ghost Adventures’ with new episodes of the hit series returning next month to A&E. A&E have confirmed that from Saturday, June 7, new episodes will return from 11.30pm, much to the delight of eager fans.

Despite a season of record low audience numbers ‘American Idol’ has been renewed for another season. There was plenty of speculation ‘Idol’ would perhaps wrap up at the conclusion of this current season but it’s managed to survive despite poor ratings and less than impressive acts.

I must say this one came as a surprise – Arena reality show ‘The Real Housewives of Melbourne’ will be returning for a second series and will begin filming later this year. No decisions have been made as yet in regards to which cast members will return but expect most of them to.

Starring: Mila Kuis and Seth Green The crude, offend-everyone comedy ‘Family Guy’ has a huge fan base who love the show’s no holds barred style of comedy. Season 13 gives audiences more of what they love as they follow the Griffins through hilarious and bizarre adventures.

This season celebrates the show’s 200th episode titled ‘Yug Ylimaf’ where Brian, the family’s talking dog, and Stewie, the crude and abrasive baby, end up having to work together after Stewie’s time machine causes events to run in reverse, potentially leading to Stewie being ‘unborn’.

Other episodes include ‘Friends Without Benefits’, ‘No Country Club for Old Men’ and ‘The Giggity Wife’. Family Guy Season Thirteen includes interviews, table reads and commentary from the cast and creator Seth MacFarlane.

Godzilla is surely one of the greatest monsters ever to grace our screens. Originating in Japan in the 1950’s, Godzilla has become a global pop culture icon and star of countless films, video games, comic books and television series. Well, the creature is back, with the new release aptly titled film ‘Godzilla’.

From director Gareth Edwards, ‘Godzilla’ is the newest recreation of the story of a radioactive monster who battles evil creatures as they set out to destroy humanity.

There’s plenty of action scenes, great explosions and all things mayhem. It is far from the days where Godzilla was a puppet and strings production.

Starring Aaron Johnson (from ‘Kick Ass’) as Lieutenant Ford Brody, Elizabeth Olsen (from ‘Liberal Arts’) as Elle Brody and Bryan Cranston (of ‘Breaking Bad’ fame) as Joseph Brody, ‘Godzilla’ is an action packed story about courage and the restoration of balance.

It’s a monster movie with a character driven story that will satisfy those who like their action with a strong human element.

Rockers Linkin Park have just released their sixth album ‘The Hunting Party’. Over 10 years after their hit single ‘One Step Closer’, the band have clearly got the longevity thing down pat.

Their aim with the ‘The Hunting Party’ was to make a heavier sounding album to follow up after the 2012 release ‘Living Things’.

And that they have, with the band’s vocalist, Mike Shinoda telling Rolling Stone that he believes this is the heaviest record Linkin Park has created. Doing what originally made them a world wide hit but with a slightly more mature approach, Linkin Parkhave really found themselves with a unique sound in the years since their teenage success.

The first single from the album is ‘Guilty All The Same’. It’s over five minutes of blistering rock, with a killer instrumental intro and continues Linkin Park’s rock-rap hybrid style with guest start rapper Rakim featured on the track.

The album also has appearances by Page Hamilton, vocalistguitarist for metal band Helmet, as well as Daron Malakian, guitarist for System of a Down. ‘The Hunting Party’ will definitely leave Linkin Park fans pleased.

tempting. The progression of the demon’s influence will show up on the hero’s body, signaling just how much of the hero has been taken over by evil. Players have the freedom of choice throughout the game with real time battles that rely on tactical skills. During battle you will have companions who can provide assistance when needed, with each having specialised skills including hand-to-hand combat and magic.

hen the folk at Katnook Estate in the heartland of South Australia’s Coonawarra decided to plant Sauvignon Blanc for winemaker Wayne Stehbens, neither the owners nor Wayne realised quite what an adventure they were embarking upon.

It was 1981, and decades before Sauvignon Blanc was to become the darling it is today. But Wayne surprised everyone with the drop he crafted then, and has continued to do so now for over 30 years. And his latest, from the 2012 vintage, is a cracker drop from what he refers to as “an extraordinary year for the variety,” with slightly warmer conditions than normal and below average rainfall, that together meant for early-ripening fruit that could be harvested in top condition.

Wayne also added a five per cent splash of Semillon to this wine, helping boost its varietal grassy notes to complement its passionfruit, grapefruit and gooseberry flavours. It’s a really top drop he ranks amongst the best he’s ever made, and remarkably for a Sauvignon Blanc shows great potential for 10 plus years in the cellar.

Pay $25, and for an ideal match put it on the table with Spanish seafood paella.

One to note: Durif is still a somewhat rare wine in Australia, with Rutherglen being considered its “home” here after canes brought from its natural homeland in the south of France were planted there in 1908.

he hit musical ‘Hairspray’ delights audiences by sweeping them away to 1960’s Baltimore, where the 50’s are out and change is in the air! And Penrith audiences were swept off their feet at the opening night of ‘Hairspray’, put on by the highly successful and talented Penrith Musical Comedy Company at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre. After a sell out season in 2012, the Musical Comedy Company had no choice but to come back and do another outstanding production of ‘Hairspray’, which looks at themes of racism and acceptance through a light-hearted plot that follows lovable plus size heroine Tracy Turnblad on her mission to perform on ‘The Corny Collins Show’.

Audience members were delighted to meet the cast on the opening night and discuss just what goes into making such a successful stage show.

n the world of music it doesn’t get much bigger than Michael Jackson.

And in true Jackson style, he keeps delivering classic hits, even from the grave.

Though we have lost the beloved singer and entertainer, fans will have the chance to hear new music from the ‘King of Pop’ with the release of the album, ‘XSCAPE’.

Jackson’s second posthumous compilation album includes eight previously unreleased tracks, curated by famed Epic Records Chairman and CEO L.A Reid.

The tracks have been given a contemporary spin, while still staying true to the essence of the Jackson sound.

The new songs, selected by Reid from the artist’s archive, represent over four decades of Jackson’s material and will allow fans to experience more of the genius that is the King of Pop. Reid hand picked several of the world’s top producers to help with this “contemporising”, as Reid refers to it, including the album’s lead producer, the famed Timbaland, along with global hit makers including Stargate, Jerome ‘Jroc’ Harmon and John McClain.

The album title song ‘XSCAPE’ has particular significance to producer Rodney Jerkins, who originally wrote and recorded the track in the studio with Jackson, and is the only original producer to work on the contemporary versions.

The track was actually originally recorded in 2001 for Jackson’s ‘Invincible’.

‘XSCAPE’ continues the tradition of edgy, one word titles for Michael Jackson albums that began with the hit ‘THRILLER’.

Other songs on the album include ‘Love Never Felt So Good’, ‘Chicago’, ‘Loving You’, ‘A Place With No Name’, ‘Slave to the Rhythm’ and ‘Blue Gangsta’.

The album ‘XSCAPE’ will also be released in a Deluxe Edition, with the track list including the original recordings. This is one for the ultimate fan or anyone curious to hear the tracks without the fresh, contemporary spin.

The album is not without controversy though, with some music critics questioning whether the incomplete tracks should have been released and whether it would be an album that Michael Jackson would have approved of.

Nevertheless, Jackson fans across the world are itching to get their copy of ‘XSCAPE’, which may just claim a few new fans too.

It’s a chance to hear new material from a man who has provided the world of pop with some of its biggest hits and greatest performances.

Out front of this exciting new act is a singer with a voice that can move mountains, Virginia Lillye, the lady who gives the band its name.

With a family background of musicians and entertainers, Virginia has performing in her blood. After years in Germany performing in stage productions and singing in rock bands, she returned to Australia in 2008. A stint with a funk band was followed by an appearance on ‘The Voice’, and that’s when Virginia set her sights back on the hard rock scene.

During my research for this column, I discovered there are a thousand different types of surgeries you can get – some, like labiaplasty (use your imagination with that one), are a little more on the bizarre side than others – and the amount of people getting them is increasing.

There are no statistics on cosmetic surgery in Australia however, in 2011, Dr Blackstock completed just 100 breast augmentations, which is nothing compared to the 244 he completed in the year from July 2012 – an indication that the demand for cosmetic surgery is rising and certainly in the local area.

Contrary to my former beliefs, for the majority of women, if not all of them, cosmetic surgery is a completely selfish act of empowerment, one they are well and truly entitled to if they have the cash to make it happen.

And, if these increasing numbers show anything at all, they are proof that more women are coming to realise that going under the knife isn’t failure at all; rather they seem to see it as the ultimate expression of oneself.

Of all the quick beauty fixes and instant body transformations, a cheek lift, a boob job, some lypo and a few botox injections seem to be the go-to these days.

A 10-week workout is ‘too hard’, wrinkle-defying creams are ‘unreliable’ and protecting your face from the sun is just ‘a drag’ – plus it takes a lifetime... there’s no point in starting now unless you’re younger than 25 – so cosmetic surgery has become the ‘easy’ option.

You hear all the horror stories, like the ones where dodgy breast implants explode or an allergic reaction leaves a woman’s lips bruised and puffy, but when you see your best friend with a perfect, new face, it’s hard not to consider going under the knife.

I had never considered getting plastic surgery – in fact, I had always seen it as failure in a woman... I saw it as conforming to men’s standards or a desperate act out of poor self esteem – and I had never bothered to understand why your average person would consider getting it.

I can see why a person would get a nose job after breaking their nose and totally get why women may choose to have a breast reconstruction after a mastectomy – I wouldn’t even blame you for going up a size or two – but a young woman with perfectly good assets already... what’s the go there?

Well, according to cosmetic surgeons, going under the knife is giving women the ability to take control of their own bodies.

They say it’s empowering, giving women the opportunity to change what they themselves want to change about their own body, regardless of what is acceptable by society – it is their choice about their own body.

“I’ve never met a woman who’s come to me because she’s using cosmetic surgery at the request of someone else. It’s always about a woman’s choice about how she wants to present her body,” said Enhance Clinic Penrith cosmetic surgeon, Dr Les Blackstock.

Wow, I had never thought of it this way.

I would argue that no woman should ever have to feel like she isn’t pretty enough, or doesn’t have the right body, but what if she did feel that way and cosmetic surgery could fix her self-

Top three tips for good health?

My three top tips for good health are not rocket science: 1. Sleep. Most people think six hours will do, but that’s just simply not the case.

Each part of our body, including our organs, requires a certain amount of hours to regenerate and rest. Denying this is placing more unnecessary stress onto our bodies.

2. Water. Water is life! Drink it (filtered of course). If you think you’re drinking enough, drink more. Coffee, tea and soft drink all dehydrate you.

3. Exercise. No need for anything over the top, just get moving. Make exercise a daily occurrence in your life. Get involved in a sport, get to the gym, find a boot camp, get together with some friends or even jump on a bike. Exercise should NOT be a complicated, stressful activity in your life.

Set a goal like going for a walk each week A daily ‘must do’: Set a goal to achieve each day. Make it achievable. It could be something as simple as drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning, or finding something positive about your appearance, getting to bed half an hour earlier or even just doing five push ups on your bathroom bench each time you go to the toilet or boil the kettle.

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy?

Being a positive role model for my children. I love that they try and do push ups ‘like mum’. They are modelling my positive behaviour and that can only lead to bigger and better things for them in life, and I’ll be around long enough to watch them grow and have their own families.

WHAT YOU DIGEST! If my gut health is not up to scratch then how can I possibly expect my gut to absorb all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals it needs from my food? I can’t can I, therefore looking after your gut must be a priority in anyone’s life. We can find these good bacteria in good quality yoghurt, like Greek yoghurt, Kombucha, Kefir and Sauerkraut.

And if that’s all too hard, then your health shop can recommend a tablet form for all the family. Keep it part of your regular daily routine. Young kids who can’t swallow tablets can use the powdered form.

How does fitness feature in your life?

After surviving my teenage years I knew my health depended on me making some changes. My self-esteem and motivation was very low. I found a personal trainer who was positive and very encouraging, who helped me find that determination I once had. I feel that the pivotal point in my life was the time I had a positive Personal Trainer. I would like nothing more than to repay the ‘Karma Train’ and help guide people into a healthy new life.

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most?

To be honest I really enjoy all aspects of exercise – I love getting on my bike on the weekend for a ride, sprinting up steep hills, power and Olympic lifting and high intensity workouts. I think it’s important to be adaptable and not get stuck in a rut. Your body needs constant change/adaptation otherwise it’ll settle into the usual routine.

I often receive questions on diet, but I wanted to include the following one from Kylie M this week, as it covered a few of the main areas.

Hi Dave you have the best column in the world and you’re obviously the best trainer ever! Okay, I made that part up, here is the real question.

We are curious as to your definition of a ‘healthy diet’ as ours differ, vegan versus meat eater.

I’m the meat eater and find that I can sustain my ideal weight eating lots of meat, I’m 59kg and 166cm tall but with unwanted stomach fat, and I walk 10,000 steps per day. I have a vegan boyfriend who has the metabolism of a Bengal tiger and has lost 7kg and now weighs 65kg. He runs and does weights at the gym.

Who’s right?

I’m assuming that the weight you’re at is a healthy one for your frame. With any diet it really relates to the individual.

A human body is capable of making do with almost any diet for a length of time, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good diet.

Always take your own results as the main guide.

If someone on a vegan diet lost 7kg and is ravenously hungry all the time, I would wonder if they are getting enough nutrition. For instance, getting complete protein and vitamin B12 are always a challenge to vegans. He’s doing weights at the gym but is he gaining muscle mass? Do his energy levels or say, his run times, improve from workout to workout?

With a high meat diet sometimes carbohydrates are forgotten. Getting enough fibre and micro nutrients from good fruits and vegetables may become an issue.

How is digestion and elimination? I recently attended the ACNEM Conference in Queensland, and even the top professors in medicine all agreed how important a good diet was for reducing or preventing pretty much all forms of sickness.

It all starts with good, unprocessed, real food, lots of water and getting back in tune with how each meal makes you feel!

When it comes to your unique diet, trust yourself to experiment and become the expert.

How to stop your pet dog from chewing

Alternative therapies could be the answer

Have you ever wondered why your dog destructively chews?

This is one of the most common problems in dogs. Dogs will often become destructive when they are bored, don’t have enough toys or have no way to release their energy.

It is important that you select the right toys that are appealing to your dog. Find textures and scents that are appealing to maintain interest. Play toys should be big enough that they cannot be swallowed and are not harmful or toxic if broken apart and swallowed. Choose toys that maintain your dog’s interest for as long as possible; toys that can be coated or stuffed with food are often great as they will keep animals entertained and they self reward when the food is released!

Animals love to explore and you can encourage exploratory play by hiding food throughout the environment.

It is also important that you engage in regular activities with your dog to provide social, physical and mental enrichment.

Dogs also thrive on routine and will generally look forward to their daily walk, run or ball/frisbee game. High energy dogs and working breeds may need more strenuous exercise to keep them interested; this may involve exercise such as flyball, agility training or swimming.

Tug games can also be fun and will allow your dog to burn lots of energy. It is important that toys are durable and designed for tugging games. Train your dog to release the toy by offering more desirable treats or another toy as a reward during play. Be sure that your pet shows no signs of aggression when playing tug games. If your dog becomes possessive or aggressive during tug games, immediately stop tug games and contact your vet.

Even if your dog has sufficient exercise, play and toys, it may still explore and chew household possessions. Make sure that desirable objects such as shoes and socks are kept away from dogs when they are unsupervised. If you catch your dog chewing on something inappropriate, make a gentle sound (like a ‘whistle’ sound) to distract your dog and give it an alternative toy to chew on; this rewards your dog for releasing the inappropriate item and allows it to chew on an appropriate toy.

As it gets colder, people will feel their joints stiffen and arthritis worsen. In an attempt to get relief, alternative products such as glucosamine, fish oil, krill oil, turmeric and many other alternative remedies may be considered.

Such supplements provide relief and often work with the body’s natural regenerative processes.

Traditional medicine is slower to embrace these products than the public. The medical world waits for documented evidence. The average person will try a product to see if it works. If the person experiences the improvement they are looking for, they will continue to repurchase the product. This is evidence to me.

Don’t hold a grudge, offer forgiveness “Father, forgive them,” are among the last words Jesus spoke as he died upon the cross some 2,000 years ago. Jesus’ death is horrible in every way. A friend betrayed Jesus to the authorities of the day. Jesus’ trial was rigged, the evidence fabricated.

The officials responsible for trying Jesus knew he was innocent but because of crowd pressure they gave in, handing Jesus over to be crucified. Crucifixion itself is barbaric, the victim suffering an agonisingly slow death, let alone the pain of the nails.

Yet in the middle of this we hear Jesus cry, “Father, forgive them!” How is this possible?

Jesus’ death is all about forgiveness! When Jesus died on the cross the Bible says Jesus willingly took upon himself the sin, the rebellion, the wrongdoing of all people everywhere.

In his death, Jesus, the only perfect, the only truly good man willingly took the punishment that should be yours and mine, because of our rebellion against God. Sometimes it is hard to forgive, especially when the hurt is great, but in Jesus’ death on the cross we see the best example of forgiveness. Jesus, the innocent party willingly died, willingly laid down his life to make forgiveness a reality for you and I, the guilty who have rebelled against God. Jesus’ death opens the door, making forgiveness possible for anyone who turns to Jesus and accepts his offer of pardon.

‘Holy Grail’ mystery solved?

There are many claims to the Holy Grail but one of the most legitimate is in a church in Valencia, Spain...

izarre is possibly the kindest way of describing many of the claims made about the resting place of the Holy Grail, the cup that Jesus supposedly drank from at the Last Supper.

Europe alone has some two hundred claimed “Holy Grails” in numerous shapes and sizes, and other claimants of its whereabouts will assure you that it’s displayed or hidden in places as far as Canada’s Nova Scotia, parts of England, the little town of Accokeek in Maryland USA, Scotland, and in the Middle East.

But of all of these claims, long has a church in Valencia in Spain been the strongest tip for having the genuine thing.

The Basilica of the Assumption of our Lady of Valencia (also known simply as Valencia Cathedral) draws tens of thousands of the faithful, as well as the simply inquisitive, each year to lay eyes on the sacred chalice in its Holy Grail Chapel.

Valencians say they have proof that their Holy Grail dates from the 1st century, and point out that St Peter had taken the revered cup to Rome after the Last Supper, and that it had been kept there by successive Popes over several hundred years.

And then in 713AD it had been taken to the Pyrenees, and after that been given to the King of Aragon in Spain’s north-east in 1399. Upon the king’s death in 1410, it was then given to the Royal Family in Barcelona, and 14 years later, the Valencians say, to the Valencia Palace, which in turn had donated it to their Cathedral in 1437.

And while many who see Valencia’s claimed Holy Grail for the first time are initially surprised at its bejewelled ornateness, Cathedral staff are quick to point out

that “the relic” as they refer to it, is purely the upper part only of a shining chalice – a simple bowl-shaped cup of finely polished, dark brown agate.

The exquisitely engraved golden handles and stem, and the jewel-encrusted alabaster base were added later, cathedral staff

say, probably in the Medieval period.

But whether you are interested in the Holy Grail or not, or believe it lies elsewhere around the world, a trip to Valencia Cathedral should still be a top priority for any traveller.

The Solent Sky Museum has many plane displays from the Second World War guns in each wing, it was deemed far ahead of its time.

The test pilot Captain Joseph ‘Mutt’ Summers, was absolutely ecstatic after the flight. “Don’t change anything,” he almost yelled in jubilation to the aero-

nautical engineers anxiously awaiting his appraisal. “It’s perfect!”

Today the Solent Sky Museum in Southampton draws thousands of tourists interested in this fascinating aviation history and is well worth the visit.

ighty years ago on an icy February morning in 1934, a small group of British aircraft chiefs and engineers huddled at the then Eastleigh Aerodrome (now Southampton Airport), to watch the first test flight of a new fighter aircraft they hoped would ensure Britain’s military superiority in the air for decades to come.

That aircraft was the Supermarine 224, and those on the ground shook their heads in dismay and disappointment as it failed dismally to meet expectations.

The most heavy in heart was chief designer, RJ ‘Reg’ Mitchell who, while shattered at the results of the test flight, headed back to his drawing board

determined he would not be beaten. And beaten he was not, for within two years he created arguably the most important aircraft for Britain in WWII, and one of the most famous fighter planes the world has ever known.

It was ultimately named the Spitfire, and while Reg Mitchell and his team had turned failure into triumph, Mitchell would sadly not live to see the success of his plane – dying of cancer in June 1937, three years before the 1940 Battle of Britain in which the Spitfire was credited with changing the course of World War II. The first actual Spitfire to take to the air after Reg Mitchell re-worked his Supermarine 224 from the failure of 1934, did so on March 5, 1936.

ithout volunteers, Nepean Food Services would lose 80 pairs of helping hands, leaving them virtually unable to service the community.

The organisation used this week, the 25th anniversary of National Volunteers Week, as an opportunity to thank their volunteers by hosting a special morning tea on Wednesday, May 14.

“Our service would not be able to run without the volunteer support. We really need them,” said Ditte Kozak, Operations

Manager at Nepean Food Services.

“Sometimes they are the only people who visit a client in a day, which is really lovely. They give us their free time and are very dedicated – they are just wonderful people.”

For Jim Collier, who has volunteered for the organisation for two years, the recognition is nice, but not the reason he volunteers.

“Volunteering is something you do because you want to do it. Your heart has to be in what you’re doing – you have to enjoy helping other people,” he said.

“Volunteers Week is a week of recognition but we don’t stand up the front and say ‘hey, I am a volunteer’. We are happy to stand in the background.”

oger Woodward, the Australian classical concert pianist who has been described as an “urban terrorist of the avant-garde”, will be performing at the Joan on Saturday, May 31 as part of the 2014 Richard Bonynge Piano Series.

Woodward will be presenting audiences with Beethoven’s final trilogy Sonatas. The sonatas were written in the 1820’s, prior to Beethoven’s death, and represent his love of form and instrument. They are a departure from the intensity Beethoven was known for, moving more to a place of serenity.

Woodward has gained a strong following, performing both classic and contemporary pieces with appearances at the New York Piano Festival, Venice Biennale, Edinburgh Festival and Wien Modern. He has received many accolades including the Polish Order of Merit, Polish Order of Solidarity and Order of the British Empire. Woodward is also the recipient of the Australia Centenary Medal and Companion of the Order of Australia.

A favourite with critics across the globe, he originally came to be known internationally after collaborations with Jean Barraqué, Olivier Messiaen, John Cage, Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Morton Feldman, Iannis Xenakis and Toru Takemitsu.

Police warn seniors of man claiming to be technician

enrith police are investigating a possible scam targeting the older members of the community after a senior was approached by a man claiming to be a computer technician.

On Friday, May 9, a male described as having dark hair, between 180cm and 185cm tall and of Caucasian appearance attended an address in Jamisontown.

He spoke to the owner of the home claiming to be a computer technician, or computer expert, and that he needed to check household computers in the area.

He was refused entry into the local home, belonging to a senior member of the community, who contacted police about the incident.

It is believed the man is targeting seniors and could be operating a scam.

Telstra plans to upgrade a telecommunications facility at 420 – 448 Sackville Road EBENEZER NSW 2756 Ref No: 2756019

As part of a national infrastructure sharing project Optus and Vodafone plan to upgrade an existing telecommunications facility at Glenmore Parkway GLENMORE PARK NSW 2745

1. The proposed facility consists of the replacement of three existing panel antennas with three new panel antennas and the installation of 6RRU’s. In addition there is to be internal and external ancillary works to connect the new antennas to the existing Telstra equipment shelter.

1. The works will include; the removal of three existing RT dishes and the replacement of three existing panel antennas with two new panel antennas on an existing 47.7m high HV tower. In addition there is to be internal and external ancillary works to connect the new panel antennas to the existing VHA shelter at the base of the existing HV tower.

The proposed facility consists of the replacement of three existing panel antennas with three new panel antennas and the installation of 6RRU’s.
