Why disco will never be stopped KATE REID @kate_reid6
A
fter spending time in heavy metal bands in L.A, musician Eric Anzalone was looking for a new band to join when he came across the advertisement that would take him down a very different musical path. “I wanted to get into a rock band, I was looking for bands at the time like Green Day, Blink 182, Red Hot Chilli Peppers,” he said. “So I looked through a newspaper that advertises for bands and I saw an ad that said well known group looking for a singer with a passport. I sent my stuff in and a month later I got a call, it was from the Village People and the rest is history.” While his record collection consisted mostly of big name rock and metal acts, including Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and KISS, disco was always lurking in the background. “Disco was a guilty pleasure. It was one of those things where I might not have been playing my disco music in front of my friends but I had the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ double album and Village People,” he said.
“When I ended up being in the group I’d never pictured myself in a group like Village People but I used to love dancing around to ‘Y.M.C.A’ and ‘Macho Man’. “My first show on stage with the guys back in ‘95 kind of blew me away.” But even in a group that seems very far removed from his favourite genres, Eric still finds little hints of metal, particularly in his favourite Village People track ‘Macho Man’. “The guitars in ‘Macho Man’, there’s something about that song, it’s driving and it’s cool,” he said. “I think it’s the closest to metal that we do in the show.” With his role as The Biker, Eric joined the other well known masculine stereotypes which include The Cowboy aka Jim Newman, The Cop aka Ray Simpson, The Construction Worker aka Bill Whitefield, The Soldier aka Alex Briley and The Native American aka Felipe Rose, to become part of one of the most well known disco groups of all time. With over 100 million album sales worldwide it’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t know the lyrics to the group’s hugely popular hits which include ‘Y.M.C.A’, ‘Macho Man’ and ‘In The Navy’. To add to the impressive album sales, Village People have toured across the globe, including shows in Canada, South Africa, Brazil, Japan and Finland, just to name a few; won a host of awards, including an American Music Award for Favour-

ite Disco Band/Duo/Group; include big names like Madonna and Joan Rivers in their list of opening acts and have starred in their own movie, 1980’s ‘Can’t Stop The Music’, which became a cult classic. While some of the lineup has changed over the years, two of the current members – Felipe Rose and Alex Briley – have been with the group since it originally formed in 1977, bringing their time with Village People to an impressive 38 years. On Saturday, March 14 Village People will take to the Evan Theatre stage at Panthers, giving Penrith a taste of the party vibe that has kept the group entertaining crowds around the globe for over three decades. “We do not stop moving from the moment we get on stage,” Eric said. While disco has never quite been able to regain the popularity that it achieved in the 70’s, it’s the party vibe that Eric believes keeps music lovers coming back to the genre several decades later. “Disco never took itself, and still doesn’t, that seriously,” he said. After all these years entertaining audiences across the world Eric says the group are still very much humbled by the dedication of their fans. Village People will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, March 14. Tickets are $72.10. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

egendary Liverpool group The Searchers will be bringing all their hits to the Rooty Hill RSL stage this February. The Searchers will be performing their greatest hits anniversary tour, giving fans a chance to experience the music of one of Britain’s biggest musical exports. With record sales coming in at over 40 million, The Searchers have amassed a huge following since they first formed in the late 50’s. Their hits include ‘Needles and Pins’, ‘Sweets For My Sweet’, ‘Sugar and Spice’, ‘Love Potion Number 9’, ‘When You Walk In The Room’, ‘Someday We’re Gonna Love Again’ and ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’. The group were part of the pop rock scene in 1960’s England which included
bands like The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers and The Hollies. 50 years in the business has done nothing to dampen The Searchers’ popularity. The band still enjoys playing to sell out crowds around the world. If you have a love for all things British
pop rock then relive the sound of the 60’s with The Searchers this month. The Searchers will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, February 28. Tickets are $20. For more information visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au or call 9625 5500.

More storeys added to Treehouse tale SCHOOL audiences will have a whole heap of fun when ‘The 26-Storey Treehouse’ comes to The Joan this February. This stage performance is an adaptation of Andy Griffiths’ and Terry Denton’s best-selling children’s book which features the beloved characters Terry and Andy who are joined by their friend Jill and the rather intriguing Hector Houtkop. Following on from the hugely successful 2013 stage production of ‘The 13-Storey Treehouse’, this new performance includes another 13 storeys, which means more inventions including the Maze of Doom, self-inflating underpants and the 78 flavour ice-cream dispensing robot. Audiences will learn exactly who the strange Hector Houtkop is, whether Jill will be pushed to the limit and discover the mystery behind all those pirates. ‘The 26-Storey Treehouse’ has been adapted by award-winning author and playwright Richard Tulloch and is directed by Liesel Badorrek. ‘The 26-Storey Treehouse’ will be coming to the Joan on Thursday, February 26 and Friday, February 27. The production is for school audiences and tickets are $18 per student. For more information visit www.thejoan.com.au or call 4723 7600.

Channel Seven’s ‘The X Factor’ could look very different this year if rumours are anything to go by. Word is people involved with the show want host Luke Jacobz out and replaced by someone fresh. There’s also a very good chance a whole new judging panel could be introduced, which I think is way more important than replacing Jacobz who, in my opinion, does an honourable job.

Titled ‘Queen: Mercury Rising’, the documentary goes through the rise of Queen from the very beginning through to the sad demise of Freddie Mercury in 1991. Comedian Magda Szubanski will co-host this year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras for SBS One. Next month’s broadcast will be the first time in 13 years that a primary channel will air the event. The broadcast will also feature Tom Ballard and Patrick Abboud from ‘The Feed’.

Season three of ‘Elementary’ is returning to Channel Ten this Monday, February 16 at 10pm. Season two ended with Sherlock and Joan’s partnership on the rocks. Can it be re-built again? You’ll have to tune in to find out. Meanwhile, popular UK chat show ‘The Graham Norton Show’ is moving from Saturday nights to Friday nights, starting on February 20. It’ll air at 8.30pm.

More of our favourite shows have been renewed in the US over the past week including ‘The Blacklist’, ‘Law and Order: SVU’, ‘Chicago Fire’, ‘Grimm’ and ‘Chicago PD’. Meanwhile, Dick Wolf Productions is also planning another ‘Chicago Fire’ spinoff, ‘Chicago Med’, which will be set in the Chicago Medical Hospital. I like the sound of that one!

REVIEW W EI V E R
Without You, There Is No Us Author: Suki Kim // KATE REID Without You, There Is No Us takes readers on a fascinating journey through life in one of the most mysterious and extraordinary countries on the planet. Journalist and author Suki Kim spent six months in North Korea in 2011 teaching English at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology to the sons of the country’s ruling class. The teachers within the university are made up of a group of evangelical Christian missionaries who are closely monitored; their letters are read, their trips outside the compound are structured and their conversations with students come with strict guidelines of what can and can not be spoken about.
CINEMA
As Suki gets to know her students she starts to learn just how much of an impact the regime has had on their knowledge of the outside world and even starts to hint at the truth of the world outside North Korea. The writing is beautiful and the story has a personal element that makes the details all the more emotionally striking. While North Korea has often been a subject of interest, it’s very rare to get a taste of everyday life from the point of view of someone who has lived within the country itself. This is a captivating read that gives a glimpse into a world that foreigners rarely get the chance to experience.

DuVernay and writer Paul Webb show the seemingly insurmountable obstacles and compromises Dr King had to endure for the eventual greater good while painting a deeply personal portrait of the man himself.

Mirren, is not too happy with her new competition. The Maison Mumbai goes head to head with Le Saule Pleureur in a battle to win over diners but in the process Madame Mallory discovers the talents of head chef Hassan, played by Manish Dayal, who she ends up taking under her wing. With his roots in India and his new found interest in French cooking, Hassan manages to bring together the two cultures and create award-winning fusion cuisine. The film was adapted from the novel of the same name by Richard C Morais and was produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. It was directed by Lasse Hallstrom who also worked on ‘Chocolat’, ‘The Cider House Rules’ and ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’. This is a feel good flick that manages to avoid being too ‘cutesy’ or clichéd. The performances are perfect across the board. Helen Mirren is wonderful as always, though her French accent is a tad off, and Om Puri, who plays the owner of Maison Mumbai and father to Hassan, has a captivating on screen presence. Whether you’re a foodie or not there
is plenty to enjoy about ‘The HundredFoot Journey’.

WINE LIST
Rewarding drop
W
e’ve heard plenty of names and descriptions applied to wines good and bad over the years – some nice and some not so nice (and, yes, some just plain rude) – but never before have we had a winery tell us about a wine they call their “dyslexic”, and what’s more, do so with something of enthusiasm. But that’s the moniker given by Chief Winemaker at Briar Ridge in the Hunter Valley, Gwyn Olsen and her team to a drop officially labelled The Briar 2014 Vineyard Blend… because while made from fruit from one vineyard, rather than being a single variety, that vineyard had somehow been wrongly planted with a collection of “odds and ends” because of what Gwyn calls a “misunderstanding in communications”. And this “dyslexic lot” included Semillon, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc, leaving no choice other than to pick everything at the one time, and to process their fruit together and independently of other blocks. The surprising result is an enjoyably rewarding drop that Gwyn says “is a showpiece for the vineyard and for the Mt View area”. Crisp, citrus-fresh and savoury, relish it at $28 with prawns off the barbie. Watch this one: Long have we held that you don’t need a special occasion to enjoy a good bubbly, and one fizzy red for any-time dining, or simply on its own for that enjoyment, is Chandon’s Pinot Noir Shiraz. If you love a good sparkling red this is a classic with sweet liquorice, cinnamon and clove aromas, and a full, rich and mouth-filling palate. At $32 take it along to that next party, share it at home with a good meal and good friends, or simply enjoy it on its own.

HISTORY
Turning back Time
All that’s left of an historic local inn KATHERINE TWEED looks back on the remarkable history of the Woolpack Inn, which was a bustling local business in the 1800’s...
The remains of the historic Woolpack Inn at St Marys. Photo: Melinda Jane
T
he ghostly white ruins, heavily vandalised from years of disuse, that lie just metres from the westbound lanes of the Great Western Highway at St Marys were once part of a bustling roadside inn that provided comfort to thousands of travellers making their way through the area in its colonial days. The history of the building is rich, essential not only to understanding the lives of people living in colonial Australia but also essential to the growth and development of St Marys as a township, and its existence is intertwined with numerous other historic buildings across Penrith. The building’s history begins in 1826, when Englishman James Hackett was convicted of a crime in his own country and elected to move to Australia as a convict. Hackett arrived in Australia in November that year and took up a position working on the grounds of pioneer John Jamison’s mansion ‘Regentville’. He was a hard worker and so history tells
it, a very talented jockey who caught the eye of Jamison, who was a horse racing enthusiast and commissioned the area’s first picnic races. In 1835, Hackett won his Ticket of Leave and was free to take up work in the growing township of Penrith. Looking back to his roots, he began work as a butcher, which was the family trade back home in England. In the 1840’s he bought a number of land parcels in St Marys and on one of them, right beside South Creek, he built a home. This house was single storey and just six rooms in size, with a sweeping verandah. Though there is only evidence of one building, and a small moat-like structure, it is believed that there would have been a number of other structures near the house and there is still evidence of gardens and groves of trees. The building did not remain as just six rooms for long. Recognising that the location, just metres from the Great Western Highway (formerly Great Western Road), led travellers across the Blue Mountains, Hackett quickly extended the home by three,
to nine rooms in size and christened it Woolpack Inn, although the exact spelling of the name is often disputed. It is reported that the property was used as a roadside inn from about 1852 and Hackett began to call himself an innkeeper, but a number of sources say that at the same time as being used as an inn, the building was used as a butchery. By definition, the location of the building – so close to the road linking the west to the coast – was perfect for a roadside inn and would see many travellers pop in on their way east or west, most commonly by horse and cart. It was one of many along the major route and together they formed an essential part of life. But while the Woolpack Inn’s success came as a result of its location, so did its downfall. In 1860, the building of the railway drove traffic away from that part of the Great Western Highway and as a result, tore away a large portion of the inn’s business. In addition to this, the inn sat close to the banks of South Creek, which was and still is prone to flooding and was adjacent to a
bridge that allowed travellers to cross the creek. In the same year as the railway dragged away potential customers, a severe flood swept away the bridge and stopped foot traffic altogether. In the years to come there was a battle between man and nature as the bridge, stubbornly rebuilt, was torn down by floods again and again. By the late 1860’s, Hackett, who had become quite an entrepreneur, had begun to focus on his other business endeavours and trading ceased at the inn in 1874. Hackett lived at the spot for a number of years. He died in 1897 and the property was passed down the family line until at least the 1920’s, when it was reported that distant relatives were still residing there. The property continued to exchange hands over the years until the 1980’s, when it was passed to the NSW Planning and Environment Commission. Today, the ruins of the walls are still standing and can still be seen from the Great Western Highway, but after years of vandalism, by way of graffiti, the old house has a haunting feel about it.

Tweed FASHION
It’s not just about the clothes!
katherine.tweed@westernweekender.com.au @ktweed_
ith next season’s fashion launches in full swing, we are still seeing runway show after runway show and while everyone’s eyes are on the clothes, there is a lot more to the season’s trends than what we wear. The hair and makeup trends we’ll be following for autumn and winter are also exhibited on the runway and are worth noting down, as behind the scenes the best of makeup designers and hair dressers are hard at work matching the models’ hair and makeup to the clothing trends they’re showing off. Though sometimes the makeup looks can be a bit extreme on the runway, they often show some core trends that will be huge. Take for example Thursday’s Myer Autumn/Winter Fashion Launch, which exhibited not only the retail giant’s collection but makeup looks to go with, thought up by the talented Napoleon Perdis, who returned to the country as the Makeup Director and Cosmetic Partner of the event. “I’m so pleased to be partnering with MYER for a second consecutive year, and to celebrate this, I’ve aimed to create a look that’s perfect for everyday, but easy to up your glam factor for nighttime. It’s essential that every fashion statement is paired with a key makeup look whether it’s for the runway – or everyday!” Perdis explained. He described the launch’s look as something reminiscent of a previous age but irrefutably modern. “The look that I have created for Autumn/Winter 15 focuses on taking what seemed effortless in the 70’s for the likes of Jane Birkin and Cher and making it sharper and more structural, for a mod-
ern makeup statement,” he said. “There’s a sense of innocence about this look; a full brow and dreamy eyes capture that quality just perfectly. Rich, linear definition is anchored by lots of lash to emphasise the femininity of the eyes – big eyes and feathered lashes are absolutely key to this look!” Note to self: invest in some spectacular false lashes this season, or a mascara that really pumps up those lashes. “Achieve natural doll-like eyes by shading through the socket of the eye, extending on the same angle as the liner

for natural contour and definition; for a bolder statement, build a deeper contour on the eye,” Perdis said. “I wanted the skin to look like it does after your morning cleanse – superbly fresh and gently illuminated. I’ve used my new Light Switch Luminizer Palette to work soft highlighting and colour into the complexion, adding life to the cheeks and eyes while smoothing the tone of the lips. Grooming the brows to a thick, natural look and sweeping a bit of colour to the lips completes your look.” See, it’s not all about the clothes!
This title can be taken a couple of different ways – will I be sharing tips on how to get more wear out of your jewellery from a ‘wear and tear’ point of view? Or from more of a ‘design and fashion’ point of view with help on how to combine different pieces you may have? The answer is both! 1. Take your rings off when you are doing demanding manual tasks. This goes for when you are at work, home or at the gym or during exercise. What this will do is help to avoid any mishaps
Getting more out of your jewellery like catching your rings on something, deep scratches, possibly chipping stones and prevent bending and misshaping of the band. It ultimately prolongs the life of your jewellery and keeps it looking great.

York Jewellers Penrith
2. Don’t be afraid to wear different coloured metals at the same time. With rose gold proving to be very popular at the moment and yellow gold making a firm
comeback it would be a shame to not combine your silver or white gold pieces with some fresh jewellery! White gold has been the front-runner in the jewellery world for some time now, mostly due to the fact that it looks beautiful when set with diamonds, however it’s easy to mix and match more colour into your look. Try stacking different coloured rings together, wearing a rose gold coloured watch with your white pieces and pairing different coloured bangles or bracelets together. You’ll be surprised how easy it will all come together. Some of our clients are fans of having one white gold hand and one yellow gold hand, which works too, as does two tone jewellery (when the one piece is made with more than one colour metal). 3. Get your jewellery checked regularly. This is key to picking up any little issues that may arise from wear and tear and to maintaining the beauty of your piece. Aim for every 3-6 months if you wear your piece daily, especially if we are talking about rings. 6-12 months is generally fine for pendants and earrings depending on the piece in question.

This year a range of central banks, including the ECB, Canada, Denmark, Singapore, Thailand and India have all eased monetary policy, with others likely to follow. Many central banks are hoping that this will (eventually) lead to stronger economies, and by extension remove the whiff of deflation that is currently floating around a few regions. Australia does not have the same problems as other regions, most notably Europe and Japan. Couple this with the fact that we do not have a substantial government

debt problem, our banks are in decent shape and our exchange rate can fall to help support the economy. On purely domestic grounds the case for a rate cut was arguable, but not clear. Unemployment is a bit too high, and inflation likely to be a bit too low. Falling commodity prices are reducing the nation’s income growth, leading to lower wages growth and weaker government budget revenue.
The end of major mining projects is leading to an economic growth ‘pothole’, one that has not yet to be adequately filled from elsewhere in the economy. The RBA has noted that domestic demand is quite weak, and that the unemployment rate will be higher than it previously thought. But it is not all bad news. Job ads are on the uptick, and there are signs of some improvement in business sentiment. Rates for most borrowers are at multi-decade lows, and the Australian dollar is falling back towards its long-term average which should help many sectors of the economy that have been struggling with a strong currency. Falling oil prices are putting more cash in consumer wallets. So why has the RBA cut rates? The statement mainly highlighted domestic issues, notably weak domestic demand with moderate inflation. Very little was made of recent global developments, but they have been important. The RBA was clearly concerned if it did nothing then the $A could go higher and domestic asset prices (such as equities) lower. So there are times when the music is on you just have to get up and dance, which is what happened last week.

ust as they’ll tell you in the real estate game that it’s all to do with Position, Position, Position, so too is it when it comes to the hotel business, although those at the latter will tend to use the more evocative Location, Location, Location. A few months back we sought a hotel in London whose Location, Location, Location needed to be near the CBD without being actually in it, reasonably close to a few attractions we wanted to visit, and near to a major rail station. Remarkably we found that what ticked all our boxes was economy-priced (for London), and actually below what we expected to pay. It was the Ibis Euston St Pancras on Cardington Street in Central London, and just 3km to the CBD as well as such things as Covent Garden, Soho’s theatre district and the West End. A mere half-kilometre and one station up the line is the massive Kings Cross/St Pancras complex that has more Underground line-connections than any other London station. And it was from Kings Cross/St Pancras my wife got the train to Inverness in Scotland after our London stay. 80 rooms, while maybe not quite as large as some others’, are very clean, neat, have TV, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities – and free WiFi. Ibis Euston St Pancras room rates start seasonally from about AU$133 a night.
Parents know they have a huge influence on their kids’ health, helping them make wise choices, but how early does the influence on your kids start? The health of a mother before she conceives affects the chances of the child becoming obese later in life. A study by the University of Southampton suggests an unborn baby having a greater number of early life ‘risk factors’ is a strong predictor of being overweight or obese in childhood. Scientists from the university looked at five early life risk factors: a short duration of

breastfeeding (less than one month) and four maternal factors during pregnancy, being obesity, excess pregnancy weight gain, smoking and low vitamin D status. Published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the research shows at age four, children with four or five of the factors were four times more likely to be
overweight or obese than children who had experienced none of the factors. The children’s fat mass was, on average, 19 per cent higher. By age six, the risk increased so that these children were 4.65 times more likely to be overweight or obese and fat mass was 47 per cent higher. Importantly, these differences were not explained by other factors, such as the children’s quality of diet or physical activity levels. This is interesting because you often hear parents say things like ‘he eats what everyone else does’ or similar. The study came from 991 children taking part in the Southampton Women’s Survey, one of the largest studies of mothers recruited before pregnancy. Professor Sian Robinson, who led the study said: “Early life may be a ‘critical period’ when appetite and regulation of energy balance are programmed, which has lifelong consequences for the risk of gaining excess weight.” Although we often talk about helping kids make good choices, much of the focus is on school-aged children. All the dads out there also take note, your health also effects many factors of your future kids’ health!

Is your pet starting to show signs of old age?
Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
DAVID ELLIS
Thanks to better preventative veterinary care, we are now seeing pets living longer and longer. This means that we are being faced with more and more old age related conditions. This week we will discuss how we can all take better care of our ageing pets. When are pets classed as senior? It generally varies according to size, but as a general rule, cats and small dogs are considered senior at about 10 years of age where as large breed dogs such as Great Danes are considered senior at about six years of age. Senior pets can develop
many of the same problems that are seen in older people. These include diseases such as cancer, heart disease, kidney problems, diabetes, arthritis and even dementia. Senior pets require increased attention and more frequent visits to the vet. We recommend a check up every six months in senior pets – this
allows us to detect and treat disease early. One of the most common problems in older dogs and cats is ‘slowing down’. This is most commonly related to arthritis. Arthritis is common in both dogs and cats as they age and can occur in any joint. The most common symptoms include stiffness, hesitation to raise and muscle loss. Arthritis can not be cured, but there are many ways that we can aim to make your dog more comfortable. Older pets also greatly benefit to a change in their accommodation. For instance, pets with arthritis will benefit from soft bedding on which to sleep. Even providing rugs on hard floors will help prevent arthritic animals from slipping and injuring themselves. Pets’ senses such as their hearing and vision often become reduced as they age. Some causes of vision and hearing loss can be treated so it is important to see your veterinarian for a check up. If your pets experience sensory losses, it is important to take care to protect them from hazards such as cars and even children that they may not be able to hear and see. Pie eater: Fastest at the 22nd Annual World Pie Eating Championships, Barry Rigby. The event was declared a non-event as the wrong pies were offered up. Photo: Wigan Today for health-safety reasons, and a former champion Barry Rigby (who remarkably for a pie-eater is a part-time professional fitness instructor) chomped through his half in a fastest time of 42.6 seconds, organisers decided the 22nd Annual Championships were a non-event. The bizarre Championships originally centred on the most pies eaten in three minutes (the record was 7), but Government Healthy Eating regulations introduced in 2006 saw the rules changed to the fastest time to consume a single pie (currently 35.86 seconds.) Past winners have included former Australian Rugby player Matt Dunning back in 2006.

In his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of the traveller, David Ellis says the 22nd Annual World Pie Eating Championships at Harry’s Bar at Wigan in England’s Manchester, have ended in something of Pie Noon. Because the meat and potato pies for the Championships were delivered by mistake to revellers at a Divorce Party down the road, leaving the 24 competition Pie Eaters facing a table-load of pies that had been intended for that divorce celebration, the pies were double the Championships’ regulation 25cm diameter. And although their pies were cut in half

The first miracle Jesus performed was to turn 100 litres of water into top class wine. Jesus was at a wedding and to save the bride and groom some significant embarrassment from poor catering plans, Jesus performed this remarkable but yet fascinating miracle. When there were so many other things that Jesus could have done, this miracle seems insignificant, yet, the Bible tells us that when Jesus’ disciples saw this miracle they “put their faith in him.” Why? Was it because they thought they would

Penrith's #1 guide for older residents
March is National Craft Month KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_
I
n the wake of recent studies suggesting that crafting can reduce stress and build self-esteem, Spotlight is gearing up to launch its second annual National Craft Month. With just a few weeks to go, local crafties are being encouraged to begin planning their movements around five mini festivals taking place throughout February at select Spotlight stores across the country, including Penrith. The month will include a number of activities, mostly taking place on weekends, including in-store craft classes, free projects, international guests and special discounts. The month will touch on all craft types, from art and scrapbooking to sewing and quilting.
“There is nothing more satisfying than creating something on your own,” said Eva Daly, Communications Manager at Spotlight. “The activity is not only engaging, it’s fulfilling on so many different levels. Plus, there are so many ways to approach crafting. There is literally something for everyone.” There will be a number of competitions running throughout March as well, with local residents having the chance to win major prizes including sewing machines, gift cards and cash prizes. Crafting has certainly become more and more popular over recent years, and with social media now being welcomed by seniors, there’s numerous avenues to show off your work. Spotlight is located at the Penrith Homemaker Centre. For more information, visit Spotlight’s Facebook page.

‘Text neck’ worry: Students urged to sit up straight
he era of being told to sit up straight at school is slipping away, as new technologies overtake the tradition with more students slouching and slumping over laptops, iPads and smartphones for hours at a time. With children returning back to school recently after the summer break, chiropractors are calling for an increased focus on posture training at schools in order to combat the epidemic of ‘text neck’ issues facing teenagers. The Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (NSW) surveyed its members, with the results finding their major concerns are technology overuse and sedentary lifestyle amongst youth and over 97 per cent called for posture training techniques to be introduced at school. “Technology is all around us and here to stay. While it brings many positives, it’s also a double edged sword for our youth with more and more developing neck aches, back pain and headaches from overuse and poor posture habits at school and home,” said President of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (NSW), Dr John de Voy. “84 per cent of chiropractors listed teenagers as the most concerning group as they spend hours on their smartphones and iPads while travelling to school, then at school they can sit

slumped and hunched over laptops, which continues into the evening while they do their homework and watch television.” Recent research in the US found ‘text neck’ to be an increasing concern with smartphone users spending an average of two to four hours per day hunched over, reading e-mails, sending texts or checking social media sites. That’s 700 to 1,400 hours per year people are putting stress on their spines, according to the research. And it’s likely to get worse, too. Dr de Voy said it would be beneficial to bring back old techniques at school where teachers taught students to sit up straight in the classroom and practice good posture.

If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly. 3. The tuition is more affordable, because a big chunk of what you pay doesn’t go straight to a franchisor.

ew South Wales parents are being urged to send their kids to school with litter free lunch boxes this year for the sake of their children’s health, the environment and hip pockets. Keep Australia Beautiful CEO Peter McLean said litter free lunch boxes were a perfect way to cut waste, save money and help tackle childhood obesity. “The average brown-bag lunch from home creates up to 30 kilograms of rubbish per child each year – lunch waste is a third plastic, a third paper, and a third food,” Mr McLean said. “On the other hand, litter free lunches

Eco-Schools Australia Education Programs Manager Stacey Passey is calling on teachers and parents to play a more active role in keeping schools and their students healthier.

2014 YEAR 12 achieved stunning results in their HSC and ATARS. This was the result of consistent hard work and application to study, ambition and vision and skilled teaching by McCarthy Catholic College’s experienced and dedicated teachers. Mainstream academic students gained 12 Band 6s and 79 Band 5s and similarly large numbers of E4s and E3s in extension courses. These really are stunning achievements! Patrick Zhou achieved the highest ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) of 98.12 and will be studying for a double degree; Bachelor of Science (AdvMaths) and Bachelor of Science (CompSt) at the University of NSW. Congratulations Patrick! Simon Haddad achieved at ATAR of 96.7 and will be studying for the same degrees with Patrick at UNSW. Matthew Callow’s ATAR was 93.45 and he will study a B.Medical Science at Sydney University. Nicholas Gianatti’s ATAR was 92.35 and he will study a double degree, B.Engineering (H) and B.Commerce at UNSW. Sarah Gorman was the highest achieving female student with an ATAR of 89.9 and she will study a B.Medical Science (Adv) with UWS. Other high ATARS were scored by Dane Ellis 89.7, Luke Tranfa 89.3, Oliver Chau 88.6, Jordan Chambers 86.6 and Alicia Chok 86.15. 21% of Mainstream 2014 Year 12 gained ATARS of over 81. About three quarters of Mainstream students have been offered places by Sydney’s major universities, while others have been offered tertiary study places with other education providers. Congratulations to all McCarthy students for their commitment to study and wonderful academic achievements and such enhanced career and life opportunities.! Last year at HSC a record number of students completed their Higher School Certificate within our Trade Training Centre (TTC). Over 90% of students who commenced a School Based Apprenticeship were successful in transitioning to Stage 2 in 2015 with many more students gaining employment in their area of study. All students enrolled in the Certificate III of Business completed the entire qualification and six students were the first in the diocese to achieve Certificate III in Accounts Administration, a course students completed to support their trade and future goals of running their own businesses. In 2014, the College also saw the first cohort of students complete the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, allowing them to gain full-time employment and further study opportunities within the industry. In addition, 2014 demonstrated a continued improvement in Year 7 and Year 9 NAPLAN (National Assessment Plan – Literacy and Numeracy) scores; the result of the college’s implementation of its strategic plan to develop numeracy and literacy skills and capabilities. McCarthy Catholic College is rightly proud of its students and acknowledges its gifted and dedicated teachers.
