For me songwriting is a series of small steps and before I know it I’m running – it’s all about fits and starts for me
Friday 12 December 2014 the western weekender • west life
Speaking to West Life, Gray said he’s got great memories of his last visit to Bluesfest nearly a decade ago. “Yeah, we had an absolutely brilliant time when we were at Bluesfest last – definitely one that will live long in the memory,” Gray said. “It was great – everyone was well up for it and we had the unusual luxury of having an entire day off before the show so we were well chilled out also – so we definitely can’t wait to come back for another crack.” Gray is currently globetrotting on the back of his critically acclaimed tenth record ‘Mutineers’ and we were lucky enough to grab him on a quick inter-tour furlough. “Well ‘Mutineers’ was released back in June and it’s been pretty much non-stop ever since, which is a good problem to have,” he laughed. “So basically, right now I’m home in London for a couple of weeks to kind of get my head together, then I’m heading back to the States for a charity show in Boston, then more US shows, more European shows, some more US shows then down to Australia.” The reason for this flurry of activity is, undoubtedly, Gray’s mesmerising new album ‘Mutineers’ – a set that critics are calling his best since his breakthrough 1998 album ‘White Flag’. While still replete with a similar stark aesthetic (piano ballads, haunting acoustica et al), ‘Muntineers’ is a much more densely layered record than previous releases with his usual themes of loneliness and regret eschewed for a decidedly sunnier outlook. Gray, who said he had been suffering from a kind of creative ennui since ‘White Flag’, added that he was keen to tear down his usual approach to writing in search of something new. To that end, Gray enlisted the services of Andy Barlow – one half of 90s UK down-
beat electronica duo Lamb to oversee production duties. While such a pairing might, at face value seem odd, given Gray’s desire to “step out of the box” coupled with the sounds Barlow had pulled for the likes of Placebo, Damien Rice and Elbow, Barlow was the perfect choice. “Andy really took me out of my comfort zone in that he didn’t let me make tracks in the way I wanted to or was used to,” he said. “We took so many risks on the album and there were periods where I was deeply uncomfortable because I was so far out of that comfort zone, and I was sure that it wasn’t going to work. “But we just kept looking for something different and when it all finally came together, I realised that he was on the right track all along.” Gray said the end result was empowering and something he’s incredibly proud of. “There was a real sense of regeneration with this record and I felt really empowered creatively after tearing away all of those old ways of doing things and reconnecting with the simple joy of discovery,” he said. Gray, who was at the crest of the late 90s singer-songwriter boom with ‘White Flag’ and its singles ‘Babylon’, ‘Please Forgive Me’, ‘This Year’s Love’, ‘Sail Away’ and ‘Say Hello Wave Goodbye’, said that while he never expected his career to take such a radical upward trajectory after ‘White Flag’, the secret to staying at the top of his creative game was discipline. “I knew ‘White Flag’ was a good record but I never expected it to take off like it did – it kind of came out under the radar and a lot of people missed the boat initially, but they caught up,” he laughed. Self control is a key for Gray these days. “I have learned that you do need to be extremely disciplined – especially now that I have a family because family and success can pull you in so many different directions, I mean, barely a day goes by where there’s nothing to do,” he said. “For me, though, songwriting is a series of small steps and before I know it I’m running – it’s all about fits and starts for me.” Catch David Gray at the Byron Bay Bluesfest at Tyagarah Tea Farm, Byron Bay from Thursday, April 2 to Monday April 6. For ticketing and full line-up info, visit bluesfest.com.au. David will also be performing at the State Theatre on Wednesday, April 1. For more information visit www.ticketmaster.com.au.

Amazing look back at modernist design
entertainment
KATE REID @kate_reid6
n celebration of the love that Penrith Regional Gallery owners and artists Gerald and Margo Lewers had for modernist design, the gallery is currently holding an exhibition that showcases modernist seating design. The Take a Seat, Australian Modernist Seating exhibit, explores design between the years of 1940-1975. The modernist era was influenced by the rise of industry and technology along with improvements in education and science. It was a time of progress that had an impact on all areas of life, including the production of furniture which was designed to reflect the principles of modernity. The exhibit features chairs from Grant Featherston, Fred Ward, Gordon Andrews, Clement Meadmore, Douglas Snelling and more. Meredith Hinchliffe curated the exhibit in conjunction with Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest. It fits in perfectly in the gallery which takes much inspiration from the modernist era, not only through the art of Gerald and Margo Lewers, but also in the interior decoration and detailing of the space. Take a Seat, Australian Modernist Seating exhibit, is on until Sunday, February

‘Into the Woods’ takes the Brothers Grimm fairytales and mashes them together, creating a new story which weaves the plot lines and characters of these beloved children’s stories. All your favourites are featured in this reworked classic including ‘Cinderella’, played by Anna Kendrick, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, played by Daniel Huttlestone, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, played by Lilla Crawford and ‘Rapunzel’, played by MacKenzie Mauzy. Add to the mix a baker and his wife, played by Emily Blunt and James Corden and a witch, played by Meryl Streep, and it’s a recipe for some interesting times. The soundtrack itself is unforgettable and features 19 tracks by Stephen Sondheim, the legendary composer who contributed music and lyrics to the project. The soundtrack benefits from the film’s star studded cast with performances by the likes of Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt, who perform several tracks on the album. The big names don’t stop there with James Corden, Chris Pine, Anna Kendrick and Johnny Depp also featuring on the soundtrack. No doubt fans will find much to enjoy about the soundtrack as it brings to life this new Brothers Grimm experience.
Lara Croft is back and this time she’s in the deserts of Egypt. In the follow up to the hugely popular ‘Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light’, Lara is forced to buddy up with Carter Bell, her rival treasure hunter and imprisoned gods Isis and Horus. Their aim is to destroy the evil god, Set, by finding the remains of Osiris. It won’t be easy though, they must battle through ancient tombs while fighting creatures of myth.
‘Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris’ is the first Lara Croft game where players will be able to play in a four-player co-op. Playing as Lara you will explore temples and solve puzzles, all while trying to defeat your enemies. The rewards are plentiful, with powerful artefacts and treasure galore. This is sure to be another hit in the Lara Croft game series, and hopefully will spawn another feature film in years to come.

This Hollywood remake of a cult 90’s classic cartoon is a must-see for anyone desperate to relive golden memories from their childhood. As in its original format, the film sees April O’Neil (Megan Fox), a struggling reporter, chasing down a story involving the infamous Foot Clan. April then becomes entangled with the Foot Clan and a group of four vigilantes, whom we later find out to be our heroes in a half shell, Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo. The four are led by their mutant rat mentor, Master Splinter. The Turtles must work with April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern (Will Arnett) to save the city and unravel the Foot Clan leader Shredder’s diabolical plan. ‘TMNT’ is the first time Fox has worked with producer Michael Bay since being fired from the third film in the ‘Transformers’ franchise, ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’.
In the follow up to 2011’s ‘Horrible Bosses’, Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis reprise their roles as Nick, Dale and Kurt with the trio deciding to start their own business to eliminate any risk of coming up against another terrible boss. Unfortunately things don’t go to plan and they end up losing their business to a very shady investor. The guys aren’t going to play nice though and decide it’s time for a little payback. To show the investor who’s really boss they plan to kidnap his adult son; a less drastic option than the first film where the trio attempt to murder their bosses. Of course, as often happens in comedies, things don’t exactly go to plan. The film features a host of big names including Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, who has earned a reputation for playing the perfect villian. ‘Horrible Bosses 2’ also stars Jennifer Aniston who reprises her role as Dr Julia Harris and Kevin Spacey who returns in the role of Dave Harken. Don’t miss this perfect summer comedy!

f you haven’t heard of Henri Marc it’s about time you familiarise yourself with the name. Penrith’s coolest little cafe has created plenty of word of mouth among diners since opening in 2013. Run by young husband and wife team, Aaron and Sophia, Henri Marc is reminiscent of the cafe scene in inner city suburbs like Surry Hills. The cafe offers diners something a little different with an allday menu that’s full of interesting dishes made with beautiful fresh produce. The decor is industrial chic with plenty of homely touches like native flowers and beautifully quirky mismatched china and cutlery. The menu is always changing but there’s a few signature options that are ‘must trys’ like the delicious chorizo, poached egg, mushroom and parmesan on sourdough or the sugar lover’s caramel on toast. The current menu features a range of mouthwatering options like the pork belly with roast beetroot, pickled cauliflower and cauliflower puree and the salmon taco with avo puree, iceberg lettuce, coriander and tomato salsa. If you’re a coffee lover you won’t be able to go past the delicious Reuben Hills coffee or try one of their refreshing ice teas. Henri Marc is located at Shop 2/438 High Street, Penrith and is open Monday to Sunday from 8am to 3pm. For more information visit www.henrimarc.com.au.

Tassie wine book a great gift idea DAVID ELLIS
ou don’t have to be a Tasmanian to enjoy a fascinating insight into the state’s wine industry in Vintage Tasmania, the Complete Book of Tasmanian Wine – an engrossing 280-page true-to-title work you’ll find hard to put down with its wealth of fascinating facts past, present and future. And if you have a visit to Tassie in mind, it’s a great guide, too, for its wine routes. Written by local wine writer and historian, Tony Walker, this is a book to enjoy yourself or to give at Christmas to family or friends. Beautifully illustrated, it covers everything from the first wine grape plantings in 1823 to the demise of the fledgling industry and its revival. Tony also points out how, historically, Tasmania was unknown territory for viticulture, with all Australian research based on warmer climates and now its future has “virtually unlimited potential.” Paying tribute to those who did the hard yards by often trial and error, it’s also a rewardingly insightful guide to the state’s now more than 50 vineyards. Well worth every cent at $49.95 (freight free) from www.providoretasmania.com.au One to note: A wonderfully crispy dry bubbly for Christmas celebrations is Logan Wines’ Vintage ‘M’ Cuvee made from fruit off the north-facing slopes of Mount Canobolas at Orange in NSW’s Central Ranges. Winemaker Peter Logan has created a drop that’s equally ideal as an aperitif before a meal, or throughout the entire meal itself, no matter what you’ve got on the table. Pay $35 for the just-released 2011 and say ‘Happy Christmas’ with loved ones.

Free show n the days leading up to Christmas it’s nice to head out with family and friends and take in some festive holiday music while reflecting on the true meaning behind the holiday. This is exactly what’s on offer at St Finbar’s in Glenbrook which will be holding their annual Music and Readings for Christmas on Sunday, December 21. This year’s concert will be a little different with a segment that commemorates the centenary of the start of World War I, with a focus on the experience that soldiers would have had during Christmas in that first year. Audiences will be able to join in with the congregational carols and enjoy the sounds of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. St Finbar’s Christmas Concert will be held on Sunday, December 21 at 7.30pm. The concert is free but there is a suggested minimum donation entry of $25 for families and $10 for individuals.

urger lovers rejoice! The hugely popular restaurant group Grill’d has come to Penrith. Grill’d’s delicious burgers are made using fresh ingredients with a focus on providing a healthier, though no less tasty, option for diners. The menu is enough to make your mouth water with a huge range of beef, lamb, chicken and veggie burgers to choose from along with tasty little sliders, steak sandwiches, salads and mini burgers for the kids. Each burger can also be customised with different bun options. Of course, no burger meal would be complete without the burger’s best friend, the hot chip, and Grill’d do chips just as well as they do burgers with their famous thick-cut chips seasoned in Grill’d herb mix. For something a little different there’s also sweet potato chips and zucchini chips. Add to this delicious sauces like the herbed mayo or tomato relish and it’s a recipe for the perfect burger experience. West Life has three $25 Grill’d vouchers to give away. For your chance to win one, email the code word ‘GRILL’D’ to competitions@westernweekender.com.au with your name and contact details. Entries close Wednesday, December 17. Authorised under NSW Permit Number LTPM/14/00047. Terms and conditions at www.westernweekender.com.au or Weekender reception.

It’s time to focus on your eyebrows KATHERINE TWEED
life & style
Traditionally, brow kits contain a powder, brow wax and tool. Every day you should comb your brow with a small brow brush before applying a brow wax using a small angled brow brush to smooth, shape and define your brows. Follow the wax with a powder to fill in any of the patchy parts. Australis’ ‘Oh Hai Brow’ and ‘Browz It’ both come with two different shades of powder, suitable for people with any hair tone, with ‘Oh Hai’ also including a highlighting powder that can be used under your brow arch. Try to avoid going too dark, which can be an issue when using a brow pencil, and make sure they are still looking nice and soft. If you are set on shaping your brows without the help of a professional, take some time to research how it should be done and what shape will suit your face. There is no universal brow shape that suits everyone; the distance between them, the beginning of the arch and the length of the tail will vary from person to person, depending on their other facial features. So start focusing on those brows!
katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_
Your eyebrows are much more important to how you look than you probably think
Eyebrows are the most common part of the face that women neglect. They seem pointless don’t they; just stupid patches of hair above our eyes, but have you ever thought about what you would look like without them? If you are savvy with the photoshop, try erasing your eyebrows from a photo of yourself or just cover them with your hands when you look in the mirror and prepare yourself for a shock. Our faces would look completely different without eyebrows. So, contrary to popular belief, they are a very important feature of the face and because of this, we should be looking after them. Looking after our brows means ensuring that they are appropriately shaped, maintained and filled in, which means that they need our daily attention. I have never been one to enlist the assistance of a professional with my own brows, luckily they have always had a nice natural shape, but I always recommend it. There are people employed in beauty parlours across the local area that spend hours of their day shaping brows, so they can be trusted with your most important feature. After they are shaped, maintaining your brows is something you can do yourself, or with the help of a beautician. Once a week I will remove stray hairs with a pair of tweezers, it only takes a minute at the most, but I am very careful not to get too tweezer-happy and start affecting my brow shape. Your brows should never get too thin, in fact take a look at Cara Delevingne, who is the brow poster girl at the moment. Her thick, luscious brows have started a movement away from the needle-thin look and back to the Brooke Shields or Audrey Hepburn look. Monthly shaping and weekly maintaining is only the beginning of looking after your brows – they need your daily attention. Here, you need to enlist the assistance of products like a brow kit. Australis recently released two excellent brow kits, which won’t require you spending more than $20.

Relax over the holidays but don’t let your guard down when it comes to your jewellery
WW7338
Keeping jewellery safe over Christmas Christmas in Australia means lots of fun at the beach, festivities, holidays and time with family. It can also mean that you may be a little relaxed with your jewellery too, and this can make way for opportunity for it to be lost or stolen. Here are a few handy hints to make sure that you keep your precious pieces safe at this time of year. When heading to the beach a lot of people feel most secure if their jewellery is being worn, so that it’s not left at home or in the car. Remember that when you are in the cool water at the beach there is a possibility that your rings may become loose, and if they are loose in the first place, there’s a good chance they will come off in the water. I have heard stories about newlyweds (grooms especially) losing their wedding rings at the beach on their honeymoon too. If you are heading to the beach, either leave your rings safe at home or be very conscious of the fact that you are wearing them. The salt water and sand won’t hurt them but losing them would be painful. If you are going away on holidays you’ll generally be in unfamiliar surroundings, which can again be an opportunity for your jewels to go missing. Putting them down somewhere in your hotel room or a bathroom and forgetting them is common. I would recommend keeping them on at all times, if possible. If not, ask for a room with a safe for your belongings. If neither of these is an option pick one location to keep them wherever you are staying, this way you will know where they are if they aren’t with you. Leaving them at home is also an option if you have a safe or friend housesitting to ward off a would be burglar. When in doubt insure your pieces. Last but not least, Christmas parties are a prime-time for damages like scratches, dents and chipped stones. On another note, if you have yet to take part in our ‘12 Gifts of Christmas’ promotion be sure to get in store before Christmas Eve. For every $100 spent in store you will go in the draw to win one of 12 hand selected prizes. Good luck!

Plan
What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I love training sessions when we concentrate on ball work and game play, it gives me a great workout and helps me fine tune my game. Being a midfielder I need to have a good engine due to the high work rate expected and this form of training beats the hell out of sprint work. A daily ‘must do’? A daily must do for me is to try and drink plenty of water to keep my body hydrated for the week. I also make sure that I try to do something different every day that doesn’t involve football. My favourite downtime thing at the moment is spending time on Instagram and Kik with my girlfriend. Biggest health/fitness misconception? One of the biggest misconceptions on
Freestyle – anything else you want to say? Don’t lose sight of your goals and ambitions as you will have setbacks, train hard and look after your body.
HEALTH
Your Christmas shopping game plan Christmas shopping ahead of schedule can often seem like an unattainable goal amidst the chaos of the festive season. Rising temperatures, looming work deadlines and shopping malls teeming with frazzled bargain hunters can be enough to turn even the most organised of list makers into a last minute shopper. To avoid doing a present run at your local servo the night before Santa turns up on your doorstep, here are four important tips for your Christmas shopping game plan. Know who you are buying for Your seven-year-old niece is over One Direction and your sister’s husband is no longer a size XL. Get your recipients down as soon as possible. This will ensure you don’t accidentally forget anyone or end up buying gifts for your boss’ wife’s brother. Once you have a thorough list of exactly who needs a present, you can add more detail, noting down ideas for each person. Budget wisely Unless you’ve recently won the lottery or can count yourself among the world’s richest, you will benefit from making a Christmas budget. Think about how much you would be willing to spend on each of your loved ones. It is also important to remember other expenses that you may need to cover in the lead up to Christmas (work parties, decorations for the tree, entertaining) and make sure your Savings account can handle the damage. Know your mall As Christmas creeps closer, the shopping centres are only going to get busier. Having a game plan can help you tackle the stores strategically and avoid any unnecessary stress. For instance, knowing which store you can find each gift and where these shops are located in the local mall will ensure you can minimise the time spent hunting for items. Stick to the plan Retail businesses want you to impulse buy. When you’re Christmas shopping, you may notice that some stores bring in new products, displays and sales over the next month – hoping that you’ll be inspired to spend more. It is important to stick to your guns and follow your plan.
How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? I stay motivated by setting achievable short term goals whether it’s something I want to improve on at training or in competition.
Want to really make a difference? DAVID STEIN Owner & Manager of Fitec david@ fitec.com.au
Tabata workouts are very popular these days but are you really doing them right?
Tabata workouts are popular these days. They’re short 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest, repeated eight times, for a total of four minutes and they work, sort of. Or at least, they worked for the high-level cyclists who did them under the supervision of Dr Izumi Tabata and saw improvements in their V02 max. But those cyclists also worked so hard that they had to, in some cases, be forced to get back on the bikes. So to be fair, doing Tabata-style pressups is not really doing ‘Tabata’. Neither is doing star jumps, burpees or kettlebell swings. In every case, there’s a point where you simply can’t do enough work in the time to really ruin yourself on the level intended by the original experiment. What can you do Tabata-style? Things like cycle sprints, resisted runs or a sled push. Unremitting high intensity. But can you even do them properly? I don’t think I’ve always got it in me to push as hard as I can really push. It’s hard, in a nice comfortable gym, to run as flat out as if I was running away from a maniac with a chainsaw trying to dismember me. Without years of training, you aren’t near enough your genetic limit to really push it and you haven’t developed the mental capacity to get near the redline. You might think you’re going as hard as you can but you aren’t. If you want to burn a few calories, get a tiny bit stronger, work off a third of a caramel latte, that’s fine. But if you want the gains you’ve imagined, you’re going to have to work so hard you never want to do it again. So how hard is hard enough? Try this, go to the gym, track, whatever, get in a good warm up, and then do a 500m row, 400m run or 3km bike as fast as you possibly can. That’s all! Feel ready for more afterwards? You didn’t do it fast enough. Feel like it’s something you’d do again? You didn’t do it fast enough. Feel even vaguely normal in the two hours afterwards? You didn’t do it hard enough!

for your Christmas shopping to help make it an easier experience
What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? Being fit and healthy helps me stay at the top of my game and hopefully have an edge over my opponents. Being fit also keeps me energetic. I don’t find myself wanting to lounge around, I actually find it hard to stay in the same spot for too long and am always keen to do something physical.

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Warm up and warm down exercises: Before training sessions I spend 20 minutes going through different stretches and exercises, so when pushing my body to its limits during training, I’m not going to do any damage to tight and unstretched muscles. It is also just as important at the end of training to warm/cool down those muscles. 2. Sleep: With a heavy training schedule my body needs time to recover, so I try to get eight to 10 hours sleep a night. With being young and still growing, this is the optimum time for my body to do this. 3. Eat: I train four to five sessions a week that usually go for more than 90 minutes plus play a game on the weekend during the season. I tend to burn a lot of fuel, this would have to be my biggest problem as I am a terrible eater and I find it hard to gain weight or muscle. Basically, I need to be eating better foods.
15 health is that fatty foods are bad and people tend to cut all fats from their diet, but not all fats are bad and people like myself need to eat good fats.
How does fitness feature in your life? I am 13-years-old and play football in the NSW Youth Premier League competition. Ever since I was eight-years-old I have competed in elite programs for football, played in tournaments in Spain and France and now play in the top tier league for Blacktown Spartans, where we were minor premiers and championship winners last season.

Firework phobias in our dogs... what to do
The meaning behind those special gifts
As we approach the festive season, we thought it would be appropriate to discuss firework phobias in dogs. A fear of fireworks is a fairly common phobia in dogs. They find the unpredictable noise and display of lights very frightening. Even a dog that is very relaxed and not scared of thunder can become very stressed and scared during fireworks. Fireworks are closer to the ground than thunder and are accompanied by sudden booms, flashes and burning smells. This can trigger all of a dog’s senses and make them anxious and afraid. Luckily there are a few things you can do to help keep your dog calm during this festive time of year. The best way to prepare your dog for fireworks is to try and make them comfortable with the sound in advance. This is referred to as desensitisation and is very effective although it does take some time and commitment from the owners. The desensitisation is best done in an environment where the pet feels safe and relaxed. This area must be a place the pet can access when you are not at home. Exposure to these sounds at such a small volume that does not cause a reaction is the starting point. This involves finding a video or recording of fireworks and playing it at the lowest possible volume. While this is happening, give your dog lots of attention and treats so they learn to associate fireworks with a positive experience. A treat should follow each firework sound on the recording, so the sound is the cue for a reward. Over weeks to months, slowly begin to raise the volume. Repeat this several times a day until your dog can hear the sounds at a high volume without becoming fearful. If your pet has already developed anxiety, then the use of medication to help them cope with their firework phobia is also beneficial. For long term success, medications should be used in conjunction with desensitisation. Medications alone rarely ‘fix’ the fear. Your veterinarian can prescribe anti-anxiety and sedative medication to help keep your pet calm. These medications need to be used at least 1-2 hours before the fireworks are expected. As with many medications, the doses can vary so it is important to have a ‘trial run’ with the medications well before fireworks occur to find a dose that is suitable for your pet.
Shortly after Jesus was born wise men visited him and his family. They came to give Jesus honour. They also brought him gifts. Imagine the scene as the wise men arrived. The Bible’s New Testament book of Matthew tells us how when “they saw the child with his mother Mary, they knelt down and worshipped him. They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Mary, Jesus’ mother, may have been hoping for a new cradle: after all, the one she had to put her son in to start off with wasn’t all that good! And Joseph, Mary’s husband, a carpenter, may have been hoping for a new workbench! Why gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh? In that day gold was a gift given to a king. Frankincense was used in the Old Testament part of the Bible as an offering to God. So far, two interesting gifts from these wise men in recognition of who Jesus is, but what about myrrh? Myrrh was a perfume often used as a sign of respect put on the bodies of those who had died. What could this strange gift possibly mean? Jesus didn’t stay a baby but grew up to become a man who would die on a cross, an event we remember each Easter. The gifts the wise men gave point to who Jesus is: the King, God himself come into our world who would die to give anyone who would take advantage of it, peace and friendship with God: a new start, a fresh start in life. What great news! Christmas is an excellent time to remember how wise men once came to Jesus and that wise people still do!

Barkley is an active puppy who loves to chase his tail and steal the bread crusts left out on the lawn for the birds. He also loves barking at any animal he sees, whether in real life or on the TV screen. Since joining the family, Barkley has developed a habit of destroying iPhone cables, clothes and cardboard. He has
also destroyed countless amounts of toys bought for him. “He leaves a trail of stuffing all over the house when he destroys his toys,” owner, Mr Baler said. The only thing he hasn’t managed to wreck is his Kong, which he loves eating peanut butter out of. Barkley dislikes when people take a sudden deep breath because it scares him. He also hates being left home alone, the vacuum cleaner and the hair dryer. “Barkley is such a happy dog... he loves to lick everyone,” Mr Baler said.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro. tumblr.com www.twitter.com/ JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2014.
There will be some turmoil early in the week Twins, especially involving friends, joint finances or group projects. Avoid spreading unsubstantiated gossip and passing on information that is unverified, take the time to check the facts thoroughly first. As Mercury moves into conscientious Capricorn, you’ll gradually feel less frazzled and more settled. Saturday is super for creative brainstorming.
CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
With Venus and Pluto pairing up in your domestic zone, it’s a wonderful week to clean and de-clutter your living space. Then you can enjoy the simple pleasures of Home Sweet Home. But your family life certainly won’t be simple and uncomplicated, expect a few surprising twists and turns along the way!
Star predictions for the week beginning December 15
SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Uranus sends disruptions in your direction, plus Pluto demands that you shed your old Scorpio skin and start afresh. The only certainty at the moment is change! A close relationship is complicated by possessive behaviour and heavy demands. Trying to control others and manipulate outcomes will get you nowhere fast.
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Expect a week of extremes. You have the ability to turn a difficulty into a lucky opportunity. All you need is the confidence to pull it off! You’re in an impulsive mood but try to modify your reactions – cool cooperation will get you a lot further than fiery confrontation. With Venus and Pluto pairing up in your finance zone, the more you respect and conserve money, the more cash will come your way.
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
You want everything to run smoothly but it’s just not going to happen. Professional relationships will be tricky and loved ones unpredictable, so relax and take things as they come. If you switch into crabby and cantankerous mode, then you’ll just make things worse. Business and financial matters look promising though.
You’re keen to get ahead but, if you are less than 100 per cent honest and ethical, then the Uranus/Pluto square increases your likelihood of getting caught out. Plus avoid using emotional manipulation to force people to do what you think they should be doing. Let others make their own choices. It’s also time to initiate positive changes.
LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
With Venus, Uranus and Pluto all stirring up your wellbeing zone, it’s time for a complete physical and mental detox. Choose a simple, healthy diet that boosts your energy levels plus purge your life of toxic people who are bringing you down. Make major changes that will lead to long-term success and happiness.
Aquarius is a fixed sign and you can be very set in your wild and wacky ways. But with Uranus squaring Pluto, the less adaptable you are, the more difficult this week will be. So it’s time to examine your life in forensic detail and make some radical changes. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater though!
VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Mercury is moving into fellow earth sign Capricorn (until January 3) so you’re keen to tackle practical tasks like cooking, gardening, building and DIY jobs, plus fun creative projects. But the more intently you try to micro-manage close relationships, the more loved ones will distance themselves from you.

life & style
Expect an intense week Bulls, when your capacity to bend, change and adapt will be put to the test, both professionally and in personal relationships. If you are too stubborn and unyielding in your opinions, then others will just stop listening to what you have to say.
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
JOANNE MADELINE MOORE
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Prepare for a challenging week full of dramatic disruptions and gob-smacking surprises. Being a restless, rambunctious (or rude) Ram will just land you in a heap of trouble, especially with authority figures. So simmer down, before you say or do something that you later regret. Extend your peer group to include a creative new crowd.
Enthusiasm is high but don’t jump to hasty conclusions, and then pass on incorrect information. Get your facts straight, otherwise serious stuff-ups are likely, especially involving finances and friends. Saturday looks super as Neptune blesses creative projects, and your intuition helps you find a solution to a long-term problem.

Festive cheer on the buses Local residents delighted as bus drivers get into the Christmas spirit on Penrith’s roads
Asthma warning Many delight in dusting off decorations and filling their home with the sights and smells of Christmas, but for the two million Australians with asthma, the season can trigger more pain than pleasure. The National Asthma Council Australia is urging Australians with asthma to approach the festive season with caution, warning that Christmas trees, scented candles and even the emotion highs and stress of the season can trigger symptoms. “Most people don’t know that Cypress and pine trees produce high amounts of pollen, which can trigger asthma and hay fever symptoms. And, like many indoor plants, real Christmas trees can harbour mould,” National Asthma Council Australia CEO Kristine Whorlow said.
Top credit rating Credit ratings agency Moody’s Investors’ Service (Moody’s) has this week reaffirmed the NSW triple-A credit rating, news welcomed by the Government. Treasurer Andrew Constance welcomed the announcement which means NSW continues to hold the highest possible credit rating from both Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s. “When we were elected in 2011, we faced the real prospect of losing the triple-A had we not cleaned up Labor’s mess,” Mr Constance said. “The NSW Liberals & Nationals have got the Budget under control; we’ve instilled discipline across government while investing in the areas where it’s most needed.”

hen stepping on to a bus in Penrith this festive season, expect to alight with a smile on your face as the company is going all-out to spread some Christmas cheer. Staff at Busways Penrith have decked out six local buses with tinsel, trees and fairy lights, while the rest of the fleet will be playing Christmas tunes. Bus driver Terry Hessian, who has been decorating buses each Christmas since 2003, looks forward to spreading the festive cheer to his passengers every year. “When people first step on the bus they don’t expect it to be decorated, so they are really excited. Kids jump up and down and their faces light up,” Mr Hessian said. “I was playing Frank Sinatra’s ‘White Christmas’ on the bus one day as I was driving along Derby St, when an elderly lady came up and asked me to slow down. When I asked her why, she said that it was because she loved the song so much and didn’t want to get off the bus until it had finished.” Mr Hessian and some of his colleagues decorated the buses together over a weekend, with each bus’ decorations reflecting the culture of the driver. “It brings a little bit of joy to people and brightens up their day, and the day of the drivers as well,” he said. As part of the initiative, a first for Busways this year, staff have chosen a local charity to raise funds for. On each of the six decorated buses there is a collection tin and all the funds collected over the Christmas period will be donated to Nepean Hospital’s children’s ward.
