COVER STORY
Tim throws the script away for his turn on the mic Tim Campbell’s shock exit from the hit show ‘House Husbands’ has opened up new possibilities, including a tour to accompany his brand new album ‘High School Disco’. And he’s enlisted the help of partner, Anthony Callea, to ensure his voice is at its best. fter roles in hit TV dramas ‘Home and Away’ and ‘House Husbands’, Tim Campbell has set his sights on the recording industry. But fans may be surprised to know that before he was a star, the multi-talented entertainer honed his singing skills at Wonderland.
A
SHANNON COCHRANE @shanc_91
With an impressive voice that has landed him roles in musicals such as ‘Wicked’, ‘Rent’ and ‘Shout!’, Campbell seems to be a natural performer but only discovered his aptitude for the stage during his senior years at Campbelltown High School. “It’s funny, growing up we don’t really have performers in our family… at school I was a bit academic and I was really into sport more than I was performing,” he said. “I didn’t discover performing until later in high school and then I always thought it would be a thing you do on the side, it’s never a real job.” Despite his doubts, Campbell quickly began acting and first debuted his singing talents at the Wonderland Sydney theme park, where he was employed to sing in stage shows in the 1990’s. His upbringing in Sydney’s west has given Campbell an affinity with the area, and despite moving to Melbourne and achieving success in the entertainment industry, the singer said he is thankful for his background. “It’s such a really honest place to grow up, it does ground you but I wouldn’t want it any other way to be honest,” he said. “Even when I find people in the industry who are from the west, and I guess Campbelltown is south-west, they actually have a really great work ethic as well. You can always tell when someone’s from western Sydney because they just get in and do the job and do their best.” Campbell also reflects back on his earlier years in his recently released debut album ‘High School Disco’, which is inspired by the music he grew up with and features 14 covers of classic 70’s and 80’s hits. He will also be embarking on the ‘High School Disco’ national tour, with a concert at Bankstown Sports Club on Friday, June 20. Tracks include ‘Play That Funky Music’, ‘Holiday’, ‘My Sharona’ and ‘Footloose’, and Campbell has already road tested the material with audiences at various corporate events. “To be honest, no matter what age the audience is, it always works on the dancefloor and gets people up and happy so yeah, we’ve been working with this music for a while and just put our spin on it,” he said.
I just love the experience of not being stuck with a script, you can do whatever you want
While Campbell may have been confident about the popularity of the songs he covered, he definitely didn’t expect the album to do so well in the charts, debuting at No 25 in the ARIA Album Chart. “I was thinking, the charts are for the cool people who are on radio and they’re young and all that kind of thing. I did think to myself once, ‘imagine if it got in the Top 50, that’d be pretty cool’,” he said. “The first day, it was like number seven on iTunes, I woke up on the Friday of the release and went ‘okay, I’m embarrassed, what am I doing next to Katy Perry for god’s sake in the charts’.” But even though it was Campbell’s first time in the recording studio, he did have some expertise in the form of his partner Anthony Callea, a platinum selling musician with a decade of experience. “He’s an incredible singer as we know, and has had a lot of recording history and recording success. He’s someone who obviously is great live as well, but he really knows how to use the mic in the studio,” Campbell said of Callea. “I had him come in on all my recording sessions because, why not? There was one of the greatest singing tutors right there and to be honest, one of the cheapest!” Callea helped throughout the album making process and even contributed backing vocals, with the couple very supportive of each other despite working in the same competitive industry. “The good thing is, when Anthony’s done musicals I’ve helped him out with the acting side of it because that’s my background so we are lucky that we
come from different areas of performing,” Campbell said. “There is no competition, to be honest we kind of go, ‘you record a massive album and I can retire’ and vice versa, he tells me ‘go overseas and get a drama series in America and I can retire’.” In recent years, Campbell has probably been most famous for his role in the show ‘House Husbands’, where he played the popular role of Tom, who was raising a child with his partner Kane. Although Campbell’s character will not return for the third season, his acting has undoubtedly been positive in showing prime time audiences an example of a caring gay couple with a family. “There have been gay couples written in the past, but what I really liked about that couple is that they were quite – it’s funny to use the word – but quite ‘normal’ and by that I say you could substitute a heterosexual couple into those characters and it would work exactly the same,” he said. Though it shocked fans, Campbell’s surprise exit from ‘House Husbands’ has given him more time to develop his album, and although he said he still has a passion for acting, his focus will be on music for the near future. “If I had to choose, I definitely would choose the band, I just love the experience of not being stuck with a script, you can do whatever you want,” he said. Tim Campbell’s album ‘High School Disco’ is out now. He will be performing on tour at Bankstown Sports Club on Friday, June 20. Call 9722 9888 or visit www.bankstownsports.com.

heir impressive facial hair may be the most prominent feature of Australian band The Beards, but it’s their witty folk rock music that has allowed them to last almost a decade. The comedy rock band are set to release their fourth album, ‘The Beard Album’, and are heading out on a national tour. Vocalist Johann Beardraven said he and his fellow band mates were excited for the tour. “We’ve convinced a lot of people to grow beards over the years,” he said. “Now not only do we get to check how their beards are going, but with our new ultra-catchy beard-related tunes, we’re

And the gold Logie goes to... Chris Lilley’s new show which I’m dying to see, ‘Jonah From Tonga’, will begin on Wednesday, May 7 at 9pm on ABC1. ‘Jonah From Tonga’ takes us into the life of teenager, Jonah Takalua, now in a new school but still up to his old tricks. The Tongan rebel finds himself in hot water with plenty of fights, frenemies, break-dancing and law-breaking. This is bound to be a hit!
Still on ‘Jonah From Tonga’ and if you’re like me and don’t want to have to wait week after week to watch each episode, the ABC is giving you a rare chance to watch all six episodes at once. The bold move will see all episodes available on ABC’s iView service for free.
After nearly 10 years at Channel Seven, sports presenter and all-round good guy Matt White is returning home to Channel Ten. White spent 11 years at Ten before joining the Seven Network where he’s hosted everything from the 6pm sports bulletin to ‘Today Tonight’.
It’s been revealed that Channel Ten may not go after the 2016 Rio Olympics despite doing a marvelous job on the recent Sochi Winter Olympics coverage. Seven are in prime position to snatch back the next three Olympic Games in Rio (2016), South Korea (2018 Winter) and Tokyo (2020).
Channel Ten will air new comedy ‘The Millers’ this Sunday night following the Australian episode of ‘Modern Family’ at 6.30pm. The double episode of the new US comedy will premiere at 7pm and will unusually be followed by another new episode of ‘Modern Family’ at 8pm.

Transforming from a small fishing village pre-1840’s to an international centre, Shanghai was the biggest city in the world at the time and had a multicultural feel with a blend of migrants making up the population. Becoming a symbol of the New China, Shanghai was brimming with stunning fashion and its own unique style that was exotic, avant garde and cosmopolitan. A mixture of culture and couture made Shanghai a fixture in the 1930’s fashion world and meant that all the newest designs, from swimwear to silk stockings, came first to the city before sweeping through China. THE RAILWAY MAN RATED M
Starring: Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Stellan Skarsgard This Australian-made movie is a harrowing yet poignant film based on the autobiography of Eric Lomax, a British officer who is put in a prisoner of war camp during World War II. ‘The Railway Man’ follows Eric’s life from when he was captured in Singapore and shipped away to the Thai-Burma Railway, where he is forced to work on the railway’s construction and suffers from torture and indignities during his terrifying stay at the camp. While Eric manages to escape from the hellish prisoner of war camp alive, he is left psychologically scarred by his experiences and finds it difficult to put his trust in others. Trying to return to leading a normal life, Eric meets and marries Patti, and they have a happy life together despite the tragedies in the past. When Patti discovers, years after Eric’s imprisonment, that the Japanese officer who tortured her husband is still alive, she struggles with what to do. Desperate to overcome fears from the past, the couple return to the location of the camp.

THE VAMPS MEET THE VAMPS Out Now
Johnny Depp returns to the screen to star in ‘Transcendence’, a sci-fi thriller that questions the positive value of rapidly advancing technology. Depp plays Dr Will Caster, a scientist who has spent the best part of his career researching artificial intelligence and strives to build a machine that is self-aware and super-intelligent. While Will sees himself as doing a noble job, the technological developments that scientists have made aren’t appreciated by everyone in society and a group of anti-tech extremists who oppose his goals carry out a fatal attack on him. Shot with radioactive bullets, Will is on the brink of death but even that won’t stop him. He finds a way to become part of a new technology, placing his mind into a computer drive so his essence lives on, but his wife Evelyn and best friend Max quickly become concerned about how much the new machine is really Will. They are torn between wanting to honour Will’s wishes, and battling against the computer’s insatiable thirst for knowledge and power. ‘Transcendence’ has been met with mostly negative reviews from critics, but its plot is thought-provoking and engaging.
British band The Vamps only really started getting traction with music listeners in the middle of last year, when they uploaded their song ‘Wild Heart’ to YouTube. Now, less than a year later, they have released their debut album, fittingly titled ‘Meet the Vamps’. Bolstered by the power of social media, the band has had more than fifteen million online hits and are sure to become the next big teenage stars. Their catchy single ‘Can We Dance’ was released late last year, with Bruno Mars credited as one of the songwriters. The song’s pop rock sound was received exceptionally well by young people, debuting at number two on the UK Singles Chart. It was followed up by ‘Wild Heart’, which had the same general pop sound with a slight folk feeling and positive lyrics, and charted at number three in the UK. Third single ‘Last Night’ has more of a party theme, while other songs on the album include ‘Shout About It’, ‘Lovestruck’, ‘Dangerous’, ‘She Was The One’ and ‘Risk It All’. With four teens at the helm of The Vamps, the band follows the well-known boy band model and have a fun pop rock sound to match. Their new album comes in a deluxe edition and is now being sold at music retailers. Pick up your copy today.

mall though it is as a winemaking region, the cool-climate NSW Southern Highlands is grabbing increasingly serious attention with wines from fruits that thrive in a clean, cool and elevated environment. Sauvignon Blanc is one of these varieties, with Bill Hall at Banjo’s Run at Exeter recently releasing a 2011 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc that can probably be most-easily summed up in just one word: stunning. For here is a drop that’s got a wonderful generosity of flavour about it, and whose so-forward fresh stone fruit and herb characters, and lively acid finish, make it an ideal partner year-round with seafoods. Bill has done absolute wonders with the rundown vineyard he bought some five years ago at Exeter, which is at the very southern end of the Southern Highlands region and some 700 metres above sea level. If you’re visiting the Highlands, (Exeter is around 1.5hrs south of Sydney) make a point to drop into his Banjo’s Run Cellar Door that’s open every weekend. The 2011 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is $22 a bottle and $240 a dozen; give Bill a call on 0408 228 724 to order, or simply go onto www.banjosrun.com.au. One to note: If you’re thinking something Italian for the table like a tomato-based pasta or a wood-fired pizza with a hint of basil, think too about a further touch of Italy from the bottle to go with it such as a Barbera. The Adelaide Hills’ Chain of Ponds has an excellent example under its 2010 Stopover label, with full-on juicy red fruits from cherries to plums on the palate. At $22 it’s excellent value for entertaining.

Coconut oil not all it’s made out to be KATHERINE TWEED

around my nose, which is uncharacteristic for me. Feeling a little concerned, I again turned to blogs and reviews to see what was going on and I was shocked. There were so many people experiencing the same problems as I was – in my excitement before trying coconut oil I had obviously skimmed over the bad reviews. Despite wanting to admit defeat and give up right there and then, I kept the routine up for another fortnight and watched as my skin got progressively worse. I have since switched back to my old routine and the pimples, which have been very, very stubborn and have remained in the same spots since I first tried coconut oil, are now starting to fade and my skin is gradually getting back to normal. As far as I can remember, the only thing that I changed about my day-to-day routine was using the coconut oil – my diet, makeup and other routines remained the same. I’m not here to tell you that the product won’t work for you, my readers, but be warned: if you have a routine that already works for you, think really hard before you change it up because you might be making a big mistake.
katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_
Virgin coconut oil is the latest fad but I hold my doubts about it
It is tipped as one of the best products in natural skincare; a ‘miracle’ treatment for problem skin; a quick, natural way to remove makeup and as if it isn’t already amazing enough, it boasts a long list of health benefits too. Coconut oil has been a craze circulating health, fitness and organic groups for a couple of years now and is used in the daily routine of many. A quick Google search will find reviews from men and women who are “never turning back”, describing the oil as “life changing” and “perfect” but I am calling it; coconut oil just isn’t that good – at least, not for me. I started using coconut oil a few weeks ago – yes, I was a little late in jumping on that band wagon – because I had read the positive reviews and had seen all the amazing results. I already had a skincare routine, albeit a simple one, that I loved and that worked perfectly for my skin but in a sudden urge to buy healthy and organic products – a phase that didn’t last long – I turned to coconut oil. Heeding warnings of bloggers and self-proclaimed ‘experts’, I made sure I purchased ‘virgin’ coconut oil (those who purchase refined coconut oil are shunned on blogs these days) and a product that had been set in a glass jar. I began using it first as a makeup remover, applying it to my face and then wiping off with cotton wool to remove the oil and makeup. It worked amazingly well! As someone who is often sceptical of theses fads and phases, especially ones that are organic or natural, I was pleasantly surprised. Every scrap of makeup, even my waterproof makeup, came off my face with ease and although my skin felt a little oily afterward it was incredibly soft. Rather than take off all the oil, I splashed my face with water and left it on overnight as a moisturiser. In the morning, my face wasn’t oily at all – I was very impressed. Because I was so impressed with coconut oil, I kept up the same routine for the rest of the week. By the time Friday rolled around, I was sporting a handful of pesky spots and I had very dry skin

Wipe pearls softly with a damp cloth instead of submerging them in water Since 1880 we’ve been here to help Australians who are doing it tough. With your help we always will be.

Keep your pearls looking their best Pearls are sometimes called ‘organic gems’ and as they are softer than other gems they require extra care and attention in comparison. Originally pearls were considered to be extremely rare. Nowadays to keep up with demand pearl farms aid the process by introducing a bead or ‘nucleus’ (normally a small piece of shell) into the clam, muscle or oyster which induces the animal to begin coating the bead in nacre – creating the layers that make up the pearl itself. Funnily enough this process is actually a kind of defence mechanism, which results in the beautiful pearls that we wear today! A good rule of thumb when it comes to caring for your pearls is to remember a rather useful saying: “Pearls should be the last thing you put on before you leave the house, and the first thing that you take off when you arrive home”. This means that you should avoid applying perfume or makeup while wearing your pearl strand or earrings and the same goes when using moisturiser while wearing pearl rings or bracelets. Although pearls come from water (whether it be salt or freshwater) I don’t recommend submerging them to clean them. Doing this can affect the silk or nylon used for stringing strands and also the glue used to help adhere pearls to rings and earrings. Instead, gently wiping them with a soft, damp, cloth after each wear is a much better idea! Make sure that you allow time to dry after cleaning before putting them away. Be gentle! Rigorous cleaning may damage the outer layers and change the beautiful lustre and shine of your pearls. When storing your pearls keep them away from other jewellery to avoid damage and depending on how often you wear them out and about you may need to have them re-strung every year or two. A great idea is to have them ‘knotted’ which means a small knot is made between each pearl, avoiding a disaster should your strand break. Knotting also prevents wear and tear from one pearl to another so keeps them looking beautiful!

Bad diets and lifestyles are to blame for the increase in ‘diseases’

We look for a new drug or treatment for many of the ailments that are dramatically increasing, yet reject or ignore the plain and simple and obvious solutions. Autism has increased by 40 per cent over the last two years and is expected to increase. Cardiovascular disease is on the rise. Diabetes is going off the scale and auto-immune diseases are skyrocketing. The “experts” are pontificating about causes and claiming better diagnosis. However, all major modern diseases are on the rise and as they are not things you can actually catch – that is they are not really diseases – the obvious thing is to admit that what we put in our mouths and stomachs as well as our unhealthy lifestyles, are what are causing these increases, not better diagnosis. Lousy diet is the main cause of most of today’s poor health. This coupled with a lack of exercise, high stress, smoking, excessive alcohol and fast food consumption is the reason why disease is on the rise. The answer is not another expensive and damaging drug. It is not the need for a new and expensive medical or surgical procedure. No, the answer is a total re-evaluation of our lifestyles. Don’t believe marketing hype, advertisements, food packaging claims and the like. Visit someone who can help you reprogram your life and move over to lifestyles and diets that will make you healthy, lead to a long and productive life and guarantee that you will be around to see your great grandchildren graduate. This is the easy answer, and it will take a little effort on your part, but I guarantee it will be worth it.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Home is where the heart is this week as you solve a domestic problem, patch up a disagreement with a relative or start to see a family member in a fascinating new light. Perhaps it’s time to let go of old grudges Aquarius, as you build bridges with loved ones and let bygones be bygones? May is a great time to buy a new car or computer.
It’s time for your yearly stocktake on where you are going financially. Are you a spendthrift? With the New Moon in your cash zone, you’re in the mood for a spontaneous spending spree. But remember, slow and steady wins the money race. You’re feeling fabulously flirtatious on Saturday as Venus vamps into your sign. Single Rams – an old romance could be rekindled.
The air is electric with career opportunities for hungry Lions. The question is – are you hungry enough? With the New Moon lighting up your professional zone, now is the time to work out a strategy and then pounce! Sunday is your pick of the week as Pluto boosts your Cat charisma and powerful personality.
Star predictions for the week beginning April 27
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Long-distance travel is likely over the next 12 months, as the New Moon activates your adventure zone, so start planning your itinerary now! On Wednesday education, research, gardening and DIY projects are favoured. Explain yourself carefully on Saturday, otherwise others will take your comments as unfair criticism.
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Librans are incredibly creative creatures, but sometimes you are too easily side-tracked on the road to success. The New Moon in Taurus encourages you to be more practical, as you turn your abstract dreams into concrete reality. With your ruler Venus shifting into your relationship zone on Saturday, the more positive energy you put into partnerships, the happier you’ll be.
SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
It’s the best week of the year to update your appearance, plus revise your plans for the future. With the New Moon giving you a confidence boost, Bulls are ready for anything! Don’t let others hurry you. As Glenn Ford said “If they try to rush me I tell them I’ve only got one other speed, and that’s slower.”
The New Moon helps you view relationships from a fresh perspective. Are there bad habits you can banish, old grudges you can release, or outdated beliefs you can surrender? Sunday’s super Sun/Pluto trine boosts your spirits. As Audrey Hepburn said: “I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.”
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Tuesday’s New Moon encourages you to indulge in some daydreaming, as you conjure up novel ways to be creative at home and work. Your intuition is firing so make sure you use it. Saturn pushes you to work hard on the weekend, as you complete unfinished jobs. Keep your eyes and ears open, you’ll pick up plenty of information.
Speedy Sagittarius, don’t promise more than you can deliver, especially when it comes to work projects. Try to get the ratio right between being enthusiastic and being realistic. Tuesday’s New Moon revs up your enthusiasm for a new sport or exercise routine that you can share with your friends.
CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
An old friendship is being tested so think twice before you say something that’s controversial. A new friend inspires you to take a confident step forward. No side-stepping Crabs! Venus shifts into your career zone from May 3-29 so it’s a terrific time to apply for a job; spruce up your work space; or improve communication.
Aim to get the balance right between work and leisure, as Tuesday’s New Moon freshens up your fun zone. You could also initiate a relationship renaissance with a child, teenager or lover. Saturday’s Mercury/Saturn opposition increases your serious side, and your tendency to worry. Calm down Capricorn!

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION
MAYA WILKINSON Forget calorie counting and diet foods
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Top three tips for good health Move, hydrate and eat well. Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
A daily must do Always take time out to just sit and clear your mind. A lot of our problems with health and nutrition come from stress and anxiety. If we just take at least 15min to be silent then that is the best foundation to overall health and fitness.
What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy The biggest benefit definitely has to be knowing that my body inside is the healthiest it will ever be and this is the foundation to a healthy, disease free future. Food is fuel so whatever you put in your body will either make your body the healthiest it can be or it can be the path to disease and a short future. What style of exercise do you do I love my training in general, from CrossFit to Olympic lifting to just going for a run – I am always active. How do you stay motivated when it is just so easy to give up I wasn’t always this way. I was overweight and didn’t exercise and then I started changing everything: nutrition, exercise and overall a healthy lifestyle. I know the feeling I got being overweight and I would never want to go back to that way again. Biggest Heath/fitness misconception That eating fat makes you fat! I personally actually lived this way for most of my life living on calorie counting and diet foods, even sometimes cooking my meat in water so there would be no trace of fat. Ironically this was when I was my fattest. My diet consists of a lot of GOOD fats like coconut oil, avocado, eggs and full fat dairy and I am the lightest I have ever been.
life & style
How does fitness feature in your life? I started my journey at 18 being quite overweight and weighing about 100kg. I tried every diet under the sun from the soup diet to calorie counting and even starving myself. I fluctuated weight, going up and down, before finally hitting 95kg again before trying to have a baby. I struggled to fall pregnant and had to lose weight and was expecting our first child two-and-a-half years later. Gaining all the weight back again and hitting 100kg, I almost gave up hope. Then I found CrossFit and learnt a whole new way of nutrition; cutting grains and gluten and sugar and eating good fats, protein and just amazing fuel for my body. I found that I needed to help others so I studied to become a personal trainer. Through many experiences, negative and positive, I am grateful to have the opportunity to help others to become the best versions of themselves they can become. I work alongside Crossfit HF and also train group and one-on-one sessions.
15
Freestyle anything else you want to say I am 110 per cent dedicated to health and fitness. I try and teach this to everyone who is willing to listen. Being a personal trainer, I am so lucky to share all my experience and knowledge with all my clients and I always get such satisfaction out of every training session. If I could do anything in life, it would be to change people’s lives for the better and that’s what I am doing.

Everybody wants the latest secret to good health, and there are plenty of people saying they have it to sell you some gimmick equipment, book or online plan. Save your time and money, there is no secret! Exercise regularly, eat well and rest. Following such basic rules can cut heart disease risk by 80 per cent, diabetes risk by 90 per cent and cancer risk by at least 50 per cent. Wear a pedometer, aim for at least 30 minutes of brisk walking and a total of 10,000 steps per day. Don’t forget strength training for your upper and lower body. Too many people neglect resistance exercise, particularly women for whom it’s crucial for preventing muscle and bone loss with age. Lift weights for at least 20 minutes, two to three times per week. Eat at least two fish meals per week. The evidence is strong that the oils in darker types of fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring, are beneficial for the heart and brain. Drink plenty of good water. No matter where you are, water should always be the first thing you reach for when you’re thirsty. Water truly is essential. It’s easy to drink calories without noticing: that big latte might have nearly as many calories as a burger. And a bottle of soft drink can have more sugar than you need in week. You may feel full but neither have given your body much useful nutrition. Sleep eight hours a night. Among the many benefits, adequate sleep makes you feel better, decreases risk for cardiovascular disease and boosts memory. Keep sugar to a minimum. Decreasing sugar actually increases people’s energy by minimising the highs and lows that sweet foods trigger. You will also lose weight! Consider therapies for chronic problems, such as back pain or a headache. Seeing a good massage therapist for neck strain may work better than taking extra strength pain killers, and it’s a whole lot better for your body. Don’t focus on dieting. Focus on eating. If you’re hungry, you’re more likely to overeat, especially in the evening. It’s better to eat enough during the day to avoid hunger pangs and uncontrolled eating at night.

Socialisation and your new puppy
Do you have your plan for winter ready?
Dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years. Socialisation is the process where puppies develop positive relationships with other living things. The most important time for socialisation is during the first three or four months of life. The experiences your puppy has during this time have a major effect on developing personality and how well they get along with people and other animals. It is important that we provide frequent, positive social experiences during these months to prevent antisocial behaviour, fear and aggression. Even after four months of age, continued exposure to a variety of people and other animals is important in maintaining good social skills. Puppies need to meet as many new people as possible in a wide variety of situations. This being said, it is important not to overwhelm them or have a negative experience. Start with calm introductions to one or two people at a time. If your puppy handles this well then increase the number of people, noise level and activity level. It is a good idea to have new people give your puppy a small treat as this will teach the puppy that new and strange people, with an outstretched hand are a positive thing. Once a puppy has learnt the sit command, have each new friend ask your puppy to sit before giving a treat. This also teaches a proper greeting and makes the puppy less likely to jump on people. It is important that a young pup has opportunities to learn about children; they often act and behave differently to adults and dogs often see them as a different species. People running, riding bikes, roller skating and riding scooters seem very different to young puppies too so learning that these things are not scary is important. Take your puppy to visit friends’ homes to interact with their pets and family. Sometimes people are told to keep their puppy home until all of the immunisations are complete. This is important to discuss with your veterinarian as risks do exist. However there are some less risky places to socialise your pet such as friends’ houses with vaccinated pets.
For people who suffer from asthma, the cooler conditions and the increased risk of colds and flu may result in a worsening of their asthma. Asthma is a serious condition, and with this mind, the 2 million Australians with asthma need to be extra mindful of managing their asthma during the coming months. You should have an action plan that your doctor has designed. It basically involves suggested higher doses for you to have when your asthma may or does worsen. One important part of controlling your asthma is using your inhaler devices, such as Ventolin and Asmol, correctly. Unfortunately, around nine out of 10 people do not use them correctly and this means they are not getting the full benefits from their inhaler. This can lead to asthma triggers having a bigger effect and the condition not being as well controlled. This means more time missed from work or school and unnecessary increases in medication. There are a few basic tips to using your inhaler correctly. The main thing to remember is to breathe in as you squeeze the inhaler. When you breathe in, think about drawing the puff deep into the lungs. I often see people take a quick, sharp incoming breath, but this leads to the medication going to the back of the throat, instead of the lungs. Also, if you end up tasting the medication, then you know the medication has only gone into your mouth, not your lungs where it is needed. A good habit to maintain is to hold your head up, this opens your throat up to allow the medication to get to your lungs easier. To achieve higher levels of medication into the lungs, it is recommended to use a “spacer”. The spacer allows the medication to be “captured” inside the spacer and you can just breathe in the medication in a relaxed manner. It saves you coordinating your breathe with squeezing the inhaler. Next time you go to your pharmacy, ask them to show you how to correctly use your inhaler.

What happened after Jesus rose? Easter has come and gone. Christian people all over the world have both remembered the death and then celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But what happened next? In particular, what happened to Jesus? Did he, after his resurrection from the dead, as some think, go on living in Jerusalem, teaching his disciples, grow old and finally die a peaceful death? In the opening chapter of the Bible’s book of Acts, we read how after Jesus’ resurrection, he appeared to his disciples for a period of 40 days. In this time Jesus called them to be his witnesses, spreading his transforming message throughout the world. We then read how Jesus was taken up into heaven right before the eyes of his disciples. As his disciples looked into the sky, watching this extraordinary event, two angels spoke to them, “Why do you stand looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” The rest of the Bible tells us that right now, Jesus is ruling all things in heaven, and as the words of Acts tell us, one day, he will return to take those who have been waiting for him, to be with him in heaven. This might be a staggering thought for you, not only that Jesus is alive now, but that one day Jesus will return. Yet, it is a key promise in the Bible, one that cannot be overlooked. Right now, Jesus is ruling in heaven, calling all people to trust and follow him, and then, to be ready for his return. Are you ready?

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS
seniors
Preventing a serious fall Free program aims to give seniors the best exercise and information when it comes to avoiding a fall
KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_
friendly and free program for seniors who have had a fall, or are worried they might have one, is gearing up to begin in Penrith next month. The Stepping On Program is funded by the NSW Government and offered exclusively to over 65’s in the area, and with a proven 35 per cent reduction in falls after the program, it is expected to be a huge hit. “We talk about where seniors need to strengthen muscles, and how to strengthen them, to make actions like
A
getting in and out of chairs easier,” said Stepping On Facilitator, Julie Kelly. “We also focus on balance. Most of the exercises we do at each meeting and give seniors to try at home are aimed at improving strength and balance to avoid falls and allow them to live independently at home for longer.” Those who take part will meet together once a week, for seven weeks, from Tuesday, May 13 in High Street. There will be guest speakers, from pharmacists and physiotherapists to footwear specialists, and each week group members will come away with new exercises to build their strength and in turn, their confidence. Contact Julie Kelly on 0408 435 336.

AFTER TRAVELLING over from Scotland when she was younger, Isabella La Valette raised her family in Australia and now has a devoted group of kids, grandkids and great-grandkids to keep her company. Isabella came to Australia with her husband and four daughters in 1944, and lived in western Sydney for around five years before relocating to Queensland for a decade then coming back to this area. She used to work on the telephones for the company that would later become Telstra, and now lives at the Mountain View Retreat Retirement Village, where she has spent almost eight years. She enjoys knitting squares for ‘love wraps’, which get sent to people around the world, and attends church. Isabella is also kept busy by visits from her family, with 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Seniors targeted in new archery program With a new field course and facilities, Penrith City Archers is the place to be CASSANDRA O’CONNOR @cassandra_o
enrith City Archers are set to receive massive upgrades to their facilities thanks to local business and State Government support. 24 permanent targets will be installed as part of a new field course funded through the State Government’s Community Building Partnerships program. Similar to golf, field archery participants walk from target to target around a set course, usually in groups of four. A field course is challenging because the archer shoots a target between trees, across a body of water or under the heavy shade of branches. “I am delighted to have assisted Penrith City Archers in accessing $20,975 from the Building Better Communities program for the new permanent

“I took up metal detecting a few months ago after purchasing a basic one from Aldi,” Mr Lacaze said. “While my mate and I are yet to find anything of real value, we just enjoy the experience of it all and it’s a great way to pass the time. Who knows, our treasure trove could be right around the corner.” There are a number of metal detectors on the market from the basic like Mr Lacaze’s to the high tech. No matter how much you decide to spend they basically all do the same thing with the more expensive ones more sensitive than others. A good metal detector for seniors will be lightweight with enough features to make your treasure hunts successful.

ou may think it’s a dying hobby but metal detecting is making a comeback and is fast becoming the latest craze for local seniors. Not only does metal detecting have its benefits in terms of finding something really cool or better yet valuable, but it also keeps your body and mind active by getting you out and about. Local resident Adrian Lacaze recently took up metal detecting with his close friend. They often head out to the open surrounds of the Blue Mountains in search of rusty gold.
