After having so much success with the musical, which is based on the life of musician Peter Allen, McKenney is returning to the stage with another tribute to the iconic Australian performer.

‘Todd McKenney Sings Peter Allen’ is an energetic stage show that does exactly what its title says, with McKenney performing a string of classic hits from Allen’s repertoire, along with lots of audience interaction.

“It’s me and my band and a couple of backing singers. It’s a very casual sort of night, there’s a lot of laughs so it’s not a very serious night out, and you get to hear the Peter Allen hits and I encourage the audience to talk and ask questions and they often do,” McKenney said.

Although McKenney has sung Allen’s songs many, many times, from his reprises of ‘The Boy From Oz’, he said that the material never bores him and that there is always audience interest in the show.

“I have long breaks from it and just pick it up again… I tour to different places who either didn’t get ‘The Boy From Oz’ or who we haven’t done a Peter Allen-style show [for]. So there’s always a new audience for it and we change the show around a lot, so it’s never the same show twice. I never get sick of it and I love his music,” he said.

Despite Allen sadly passing away more than two decades ago, Australians young and old are still familiar with his songs, and McKenney believes that this longevity can be attributed to the star’s unique personality and music.

“I think they liked him as a character first of all. His lyrics are beautiful, as a performer, his material is so wonderful to sing, the melodies are beautiful, the lyrics are beautiful… songs like ‘Tenterfield Saddler’ and ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ just get the crowd going every time we sing them,” he said.

Like Allen, McKenney is a triple threat performer with a big personality and his interest in showbusiness was formed when he was young.

Introduced to the performing arts by his mother and grandmother, who were both dancing teachers, McKenney gradually worked his way up in the theatre world.

While he began with dancing as his speciality, he branched out into singing and acting later in his career and believes that the key to success for performers is

having more than one marketable skill.

“I suppose that if you want longevity in your career, being famous for being famous isn’t really going to do it unless you’re Kim Kardashian,” he said.

“You’ve got to train and have a lot of different strings to your bow to be as employable as you possibly can. You’ve got to be able to sing, you’ve got to be able to dance, you’ve got to be able to act and if you can play a musical instrument on top of that, that’s a bonus.”

Beyond his stage work, McKenney has also had stints being a radio presenter and of course, working as a judge on the popular television show ‘Dancing with the Stars’.

He moved into television to keep his career interesting, and said that although ‘Dancing with the Stars’ gave him more fans, he still ultimately prefers being in theatre.

“I prefer stage because I prefer the instant kind of knowledge of whether the audience likes you or not. Radio is a little more removed, but television is quite removed, you only find out if you’re doing any good on television days later when the critics write you up,” he said.

“With a live audience, you know instantly whether they’re on the same page as you, so I think I prefer that.”

Among fans of ‘Dancing with the Stars’, McKenney has a reputation for being brutally honest and often hilarious with blunt yet fair remarks, but the judge said that he simply tries to speak for the public.

“I try to be the audience’s voice, the voice of the people at home and so it’s very easy for everyone to sit at home and go ‘they’re terrible, they’re disgusting’ but as soon as you say it on television it takes a whole different kind of weight,” he said.

“No one’s told me to do that but I’ve been putting shows together myself for so long and it didn’t take Einstein to look down the panel and see where I fitted in.

Someone’s got to call it as it is otherwise it’s just boring... you can’t be a judge and be a fence sitter, you’ve got to be a judge and have an opinion.”

This attitude also applies to his own public image, with McKenney claiming that he has come to expect gossip or commentary about his personal life and that it no longer affects him.

“I brush it off…it did [bother me] when I first started, but now it doesn’t, and now we have Facebook where they can give you a spray as well. I think if someone like me is going to pass judgment as part of my living, unfortunately on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ that’s my role, then I’d be an absolute idiot to think that I’m not going to get judged myself,” he said.

fter its first sell out season, the cast of Penrith Musical Comedy Company’s ‘Hairspray’ have put their dancing shoes back on for a second season, bringing a whole new meaning to the term ‘encore’. Like a fine wine, this already amazing show has become even more fantastic in time.

“Most of the original cast is back and ‘Hairspray’ is bigger, blonder and better than ever,” said Penrith Musical Comedy Company President, Grant Jones.

“We had such amazing feedback from audiences last time around and it’s so exciting to bring it back again.”

Mr Jones believes seeing characters triumph under adversity is what makes the production so popular.

So put on your dancing shoes and come on down to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre to see Hairspray version 2.0. The show opens on May 9.

fter 25 years of making music, rock and roll veteran Diesel is returning to the industry with brand new material.

The musician, whose real name is Mark Lizotte, was once best known for performing in the 80’s band Johnny Diesel and the Injectors, and has since gone on to have a successful solo career.

He released his latest album, ‘Let It Fly’, last year and will now be touring, with a show at the Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Friday, April 11.

The album, which is Diesel’s 11th overall and his first original studio release since 2008, features a mix of genres and styles and sees the musician play guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo and drum machines.

“It’s all of my life’s work so far brought to fruition, in many ways. It’s pretty encompassing. There’s a lot of stuff I’ve never tried before either – like, there are folk elements that are quite different for me… I guess when you start using mandolin and fiddle, it’s going to happen,” Diesel said.

He was joined on the album by his daughter Lila Gold, who lends her vocals on the song ‘If You Let Me Give’.

Tale with a twist oung performers from Penrith will breathe new life into Snow White when they dance in an innovative production.

With a cast of dancers aged between seven and 21 years old from Penrith-based PAWS Dance Studios, ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ promises to captivate children of all ages with an exciting twist on a classic tale.

It will be playing at Penrith Panthers on Monday, April 14 at 11am with prizes available for the audience members who are best dressed as Snow White and the Prince.

The show integrates the beloved story of ‘Snow White’ with amazing music and dancing, and features a mix of well-known songs from the Disney version along with contemporary music. It also stars graduates from the Australian Institute of Music with Katrina Vigh and Tom Gustard singing, and Levi Burrows narrating.

hakespeare will get a makeover when Powerhouse Youth Theatre brings an innovative version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to the stage.

With a combination of verbatim theatre and urban Shakespeare tragedy, ‘In This Fairfield: Romeo and Juliet in the West’ will be performed for two exclusive seasons this month in the city and western suburbs.

It will show at Powerhouse Youth Theatre at Fairfield School of Arts on Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12.

In this contemporary performance work, Powerhouse Youth Theatre have explored the timeless tragedy of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ through the perspective of young people living in western Sydney.

It was performed, written and devised by high school students and members of the Powerhouse Youth Theatre Young Actors Ensemble, who collaborated with talented theatre makers David Williams and Kate Worsley.

Curtain falls on Mickey Rooney Late night talk show legend David Letterman shocked the television world last Friday when he announced his impending retirement. Letterman, who is the longest running late night host of all time, told his audience that he’ll finally call it quits at some point in 2015.

Letterman’s announcement comes just two months after Jay Leno wrapped up his long reign on the ‘Tonight Show’.

We unfortunately lost Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney during the week, who died at the age of 93. Rooney had hundreds of film and TV credits to his name and also had a number of upcoming projects he was working on before his death.

Rooney was most famous for his work in MGM musicals and was nominated for four Academy Awards. He will be missed by all.

‘Big Brother’ auditions got underway around the country last week with thousands of hopefuls trying out. Also revealed last week that this year’s Big Brother House will be multi-story.

Construction is yet to begin, but a Channel Nine publicist confirmed the news.

Good news for fans of ‘Beauty and the Geek Australia’ with the show will be back for another series at the end of the year. Now in its sixth season, the show is currently calling for singles between 18-30 who are available for seven weeks between July and August.

After huge ratings over the summer, Channel Ten have moved quickly to re-sign Big Bash commentators and Australian cricket legends Adam Gilchrist, Mark Waugh and Damien Fleming for the 2014/15 tournament.

The trio will join former Aussie captain Ricky Ponting, who had already signed on.

7Mate seems to be the home of unusual sports, and now they are set to broadcast live coverage of all 45 Provincial and All-Ireland championship matches of Gaelic football.

The coverge, which is the first of its kind for free to air TV in Australia, will air from May to September.

Starring: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate and Paul Rudd The first ‘Anchorman’ movie became an instant, highly quotable hit and although its sequel doesn’t quite reach the same level, it’s still a funny movie that fans will enjoy. Television reporter Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) returns, but he’s moved on from his status as San Diego’s number one news anchor. The seventies are over, Ron’s ragtag team of journalists have disbanded and the once-worshipped TV journalist is washed up. His fortunes begin to change when he is approached to join America’s first 24 hour news channel, and although the concept is foreign to Ron and many think the venture will fail, he decides to take a chance. ‘Anchorman 2’ features all of Ron’s hilarious sidekicks, including his ambitious wife Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), ladies man Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), macho sports reporter Champ Kind (David Koechner) and dopey weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell). The sequel wraps up the story of Ron Burgundy well.

The Muppets are back and this time they get caught up in the evil bidding of an international criminal. After the success the Muppets enjoyed in their last movie, they decide to embark on a world tour with Dominic Badguy, who offers to be their tour manager.

Despite his surname being an obvious giveaway to his intentions, the Muppets trust Badguy and let their guard down around him, unaware of the fact that he is the henchman of the world famous criminal Constantine.

Constantine has a close resemblance to Kermit and manages to switch identities with the frog, taking his place in the Muppets tour while Kermit gets arrested and sent back to the Siberian gulag where Constantine had escaped from. All of the Muppets except for Animal are fooled by Constantine’s disguise, giving him and Badguy free rein to commit robbery while the rest of the gang are on stage performing. Meanwhile, Kermit makes numerous attempts to escape from prison as Constantine wreaks further havoc by proposing to Miss Piggy who has long been awaiting Kermit to pop the question.

Harrison Craig burst onto the scene last year as the winner of ‘The Voice’, impressing viewers with his amazing vocals and stage presence despite his young age. Since then, he’s already had three Top 10 ARIA songs, and his debut album ‘More Than a Dream’ reached number 1 on the iTunes chart when it was released in June last year. Little known but one to watch out for DAVID ELLIS

oussanne is not a widely grown variety in Australia, but if other makers take a leaf out of Campbell’s of Rutherglen’s book, we could hopefully see a lot more on bottle-shop shelves in years to come.

An almost exotic wine with a nice depth of flavour that’s not unlike Chardonnay, Roussane’s home is France’s Rhone Valley, but it’s also grown widely in Italy as well, and to a much lesser degree in California.

Campbell’s 2013 Roussanne is an elegant drop with lots of finesse; on the nose it’s got nice lime peel, pear and herbal tea aromas, while on the palate it’s all about characters of pears, dried herbs, white pepper and even a little spice.

Colin Campbell says this wine is the result of an excellent vintage that gave it its intense varietal fruit flavour and firm acid backbone, but notes that Roussanne is one of those wines that requires a sensitive hand in both the vineyard and winery to capture the best of its subtlety and finesse.

And he says that while this is a great one to enjoy now, it will improve in bottle over the coming three to four years. Colin suggested enjoying it with cured kingfish sashimi. Priced at $25 a bottle it’s available only through the cellar door or www.campbellswines.com.au.

One to note: Rymill Coonawarra winemaker, Sandrine Gimon has produced a Shiraz from the outstanding vintage enjoyed in the region in 2012, this one being full of sweet red berry and dark fruit flavours, spicy overtones and beautifully savoury notes.

And while great to enjoy now, at $30 a bottle consider buying a few for enjoyment in a year or five.

Truck Show tows in the crowds SUNDAY, APRIL 6 AT THE PENRITH MUSEUM OF FIRE

he Penrith Working Truck Show returned for its 27th year last weekend. The event, which lasted all day, had hundreds of vehicles on display including beautifully detailed custom trucks of all kinds. There were also more than 20 free rides on offer and a range of specialist trade stalls and displays to browse.

Some of Australia’s rising country stars performed live on the day, including McAlister Kemp, The Wolfe Brothers, Kaylens Rain, Buddy Goode, Kaylee Bell, Dan Murphy and Victoria Avenue.

Families were also entertained by games and competitions throughout the day, along with face painting, balloons and removable tattoos. The Penrith Working Truck Show raises funds to educate people about fire safety.

eatherdale Wildlife Park will get into the Easter spirit with special holiday encounters throughout April.

The stars of Featherdale’s seasonal holiday program are Baggins and George the Easter Bilbies, who will be on display at the park’s Nocturnal House.

Often touted as an Australian alternative to the Easter Bunny, Bilbies once roamed 70 per cent of the continent but sadly their populations have dwindled due to introduced species such as foxes and feral cats.

The Greater Bilby is now presumed extinct in New South Wales, is endangered in Queensland and vulnerable nationally, meaning a trip to Featherdale is a good chance to see this elusive Aussie icon in the flesh.

The park hopes to raise awareness of the endangered status of the Bilby and is also selling Save the Bilby pins for $2 each.

“Featherdale Wildlife Park is getting right behind saving these amazing and lovable creatures. It is extremely important to raise awareness of the plight facing our endangered species and Bilbies need all the support we can give them,” said General Manager Tim Sinclair-Smith.

Visitors to Featherdale will also get front row seats to other amazing wildlife encounters, including feeding time with Ngukurr the giant Saltwater Crocodile who will soon be going into a winter fast.

ach year Penrith and the Blue Mountains entertains thousands upon thousands of tourists. Next week however, the area will be hosting royalty.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and young prince George will be making a special trip out to the Blue Mountains on April 17, as part of their stay in Sydney from April 16 to 20.

The public is enamoured with the young royal family, who have inspired a new generation of monarchists that value Australia’s ties to the United Kingdom.

“It’s a wonderful honour to have Their Royal Highnesses visit NSW so soon after the birth of their first child,” said NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell.

“I know the Royal couple and the young Prince will receive a very warm welcome

from the people of NSW, who will be keen to get their first glimpse of Prince George.

“I’m especially delighted The Duke and Duchess will be visiting the Blue Mountains to view the recovery and offer comfort and support to those affected by the devastating October bushfires.”

But it will not be the first time Penrith and the Blue Mountains have been graced by a royal family.

On March 31, 1927, Penrith was a hive of activity – the Duke and Duchess of York, the unforeseen future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, were to make a stop on their journey to the Blue Mountains.

Penrith historian and librarian Lorraine Stacker has documented the moment the royal train pulled into Penrith Station in her book, Penrith: The makings of a City.

“To greet them were 2,500 local people, including 1,000 children, there to witness the 10 minute ceremony,” she said.

“All aldermen were there, as well as representatives from Nepean Shire and Castlereagh Council. The railway department decorated the station in the Duke’s

colours, red and gold. Shops closed and school children were allowed to leave their classes.”

During their brief stopover in Penrith, the Duke and Duchess were presented with an illuminated address, which was on the first page of a book of photographs of the Penrith district and a basket of fruit locally grown.

One family that had particularly close ties to the royals during the 1920’s was wealthy yachtsman, sportsman and big game fisherman Harry Andreas.

His descendants operate Leuralla Toy and Railway museum.

“During the 1927 Royal Visit of Australia, Andreas hosted a game fishing expedition for the Duke and Duchess of York in the Bay of Isles in New Zealand,” said Museum director and owner, Elizabeth Evatt.

“Almost 25 years later, during the 1954 Royal Visit to Australia, Andreas welcomed Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh’s guests at Leuralla.”

the royals have been documented in a new book that will hopefully be presented to Prince William and Kate next week.

“I don’t think they will have time to visit the museum but it might be of interest, this history involving his grandmother,” she said.

For Penrith, the 1954 visit was again only short, with Queen Elizabeth II’s railway carriages passing quickly by.

The ‘Royal Express to Central’ exhibition at the State Record Archives in O’Connell Street, Kingswood focuses on the journey by the Queen and Duke from Bathurst to Central Station on Friday, February 12, 1954, with official functions and cheering crowds all along the way.

Hundreds of children lined the railway tracks and waved as the train steamed by.

“A feature of the exhibition is the original hand painted Royal coat of arms that appeared on the leading engine of the Royal Train whenever the Queen was on board during her 1954 tour of NSW,” said Susan Charlton of State Records.

However the most recent royal visit to date was in 1982.

Mount Druitt Hospital was officially opened on October 11, 1982 by Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II who was accompanied by His Royal Highness, Prince Phillip, and the Former NSW Premier Neville Wran.

The hospital opening was a very memorable occasion and promoted a tremendous feeling of pride within the community.

Despite early rain in the morning, the function was an exciting experience for the staff, patients and community, many of whom were introduced to the Queen and Prince Phillip during the four hour

Norma Thorburn of the St Marys and District Historical Society, said that local children were given a special treat during the royal visit that she still remembers well to this day.

“I was working at North St Marys Public School at the time and children from

our school and others were taken to the hospital and formed an honour guard for the Queen,” she said.

“It was a very exciting occasion for all.”

and is only used on special ceremonial occasions.

A portrait of Queen Elizabeth opening the hospital is still on display at the hospital, and featured as part of a photographic exhibition to celebrate the facilities 30th Anniversary in 2012.

I might be a little biased but Sydney seems like the obvious choice for a company to introduce its brand in Australia – it’s one of the country’s most iconic cities and has just as much style as Melbourne.

The international company is reportedly considering bringing stores to other Australian cities, with Sydney right up there on the list, but until then I’ll be sticking to their Australian online store and keeping my fingers crossed.

It is times like this that I really wish I didn’t live here because if I didn’t, I would be happily living in another city, where H&M had just opened their flagship Australian store and I could shop all year long.

But unfortunately, I don’t live in Melbourne.

Around this time last year, I went on an overseas trip to Europe for a holiday – some would call it an extended shopping trip – where I spent about a month touring my way around some of the most glamorous cities in the world.

In every one of these cities – I’m talking places like Paris, Barcelona and London – there was one store which I had never come across before and my-oh-my, what a discovery it was.

Each H&M store featured multiple levels of goodness that any shopping enthusiast would love: racks and racks of affordable and absolutely awesome clothing for ANYONE’s personal style.

Each country featured different clothes, different colour schemes and looks specific to the country or city you were in.

Barcelona was full of bright oranges, pinks and florals, with quite flamboyant styles, whereas Paris had simple, classic pieces.

If you are picturing me now, racing through an enormous store in a foreign country with armfuls of clothes and an extremely excited look on my face, you would be having a pretty accurate vision.

My suitcase was much heavier on the way home and I have H&M to thank for that!

Whilst on one of my European shopping sprees, I remember wondering why on earth we didn’t have such a useful store in Australia... little did I know, there was a plan in the works to bring the company down under.

H&M’s first Australian store, and one of the biggest in the world, features not only fashion for the body, but fashion for the home and stocks a 47-piece Australian exclusive line.

The Melbourne based store opened to the public last weekend and was bombarded by hundreds of thrilled shoppers.

What better way to do this than by taking a look at some of the most famous diamonds in the world!

The Hope Diamond: Let’s start with one of the most well known – The Hope Diamond. Picture the blue diamond necklet from Titanic, named ‘Heart Of The Ocean’. This fictional piece was loosely based on the Hope Diamond.

The Hope Diamond is recorded as the largest diamond in the world. It’s polished weight is 45.52-carats (9.104g) and it is a rare, deep-blue ‘antique cushion’ shaped diamond. The blue colour is said to be caused by trace amounts of boron within its crystal structure, and strangely enough this diamond gives off a red glow after exposure to ultraviolet light.

The Cullinan: This is the largest rough diamond ever found!

It was 3,106 carats in weight, spreading approximately 10.5cm long in its largest dimension. The Cullinan was cut into 9 major stones, the largest being 530.4 carats, and 96 smaller stones.

Taylor-Burton: The original rough diamond was found in 1966 in South Africa, weighing 241 carats – that’s over 48grams!

It was cut by ‘Mr Diamond himself’ – Harry Winston – to 69.42 carats (13.884 g) in the shape of a beautiful pear.

This diamond was sold at auction in 1969 with famous jewellery house Cartier of New York successfully bidding and purchasing the stone. The very next day Richard Burton bought the stone for his second wife Elizabeth Taylor for an undisclosed sum, naming it the “Taylor-Burton”. Almost 10 years later Liz Taylor put her beloved gem up for sale and planned to use part of the proceeds to build a hospital in Botswana. It was sold for nearly $3 million dollars!

Pink star: The flawless Pink Star is the largest known stone graded as a ‘Vivid Pink’ (by international laboratory GIA) and weighs in at 59.60 carats. The Pink Star was mined by De Beers in 1999 in South Africa, and weighed 132.5-carats as a rough stone. It fetched a world record price at auction in November 2013 of $76.3 million francs. This stone is one of the most recent large diamonds to be purchased at auction by a private bidder however last reports state that the buyer defaulted and couldn’t pay for the stone. In 17th century Africa originates a tale of extraordinary love between a white German soldier and a black slave-girl that resulted in one of the area’s most esteemed vineyards.

Soldier Laurens Campher was stationed at the Dutch East India Company’s Cape Town fortress known as the Castle, and one day caught sight of an attractive female slave working in the Company vegetable gardens.

She had been born in the Castle to a slave, and like all others who came into the world there, had been given only one name, Ansela, with the automatic “surname” Van de Caab given to all Castleborn slaves and meaning “of the Cape.”

For the soldier and the slave-girl it was instant love, and soon they were meeting secretly at night in the Castle’s squalid slave quarters. But despite his love, Laurens Campher longed to be a farmer not a soldier, and in 1685 convinced authorities to grant him a farming block at the foot of the fertile Simonsberg Mountain 64km away.

Unable to simply forget Ansela, Campher repeatedly sought permission to marry her, but was constantly rebuffed with the withering official excuse that she was “a heathen slave”.

But rather than give up on his love, the extraordinary Laurens regularly trekked the 64km from his farm back to the Castle to spend time with Ansela; an arduous walk he undertook monthly for 14 long years, fathering three children to her in that time.

In 1695 an influential, church-going white woman in Cape Town heard the gossip of the soldier and the slave-girl, bought Ansela from the Castle for her own household… and helped orchestrate her baptism into the Lutheran Church, which meant that as a now-Christian she could be freed as a slave and thus able to marry Laurens.

The Campher family was the first to plant wine grapes in the Stellenbosch area, and after Laurens died in 1729 Ansela and their son Cornelius continued to run the farm for five more years, producing some 600 litres of wine a year and other produce, before finally selling out.

Today, the farm, called Muratie, is owned by the Melck family and produces some of the most exquisite wines in the world that are worth a visit in person.

It’s this shambolic sense of organised chaos that in-part helps make Hanoi one of the world’s greatest cities.

Try crossing the street and you soon realise just how frenetic life here can be, yet at the same time the Vietnamese capital also has a wonderful charm and poise about it – somehow retaining a French ambience from colonial days that melds with the local flavours to create a heady cocktail immersing the visitor.

Not that the French influence was always, or even mostly, a benign thing in Vietnam. Visit Hanoi’s centrally-located one-time Hoa Lo Prison, now a museum complete with original blood-thirsty guillotine, and you realise how fervently the French liked to impose their colonial rule.

One of the main local opponents to that rule was Ho Chi Minh, a man revered to this day in Vietnam, and no visit to Hanoi is complete without a visit to Ba Dinh Square, location of both the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the ultra-modernistic and very arty Ho Chi Minh Museum.

And if you are considering accommodation in the centre of the city, the Hilton Hanoi Opera Hotel (www.hilton.com) is right there in the heart of the city’s chic, elegant French Quarter, where footpaths actually more-often are footpaths, rather than marketplaces.

Here in this Quarter is where to shop for genuine designer labels, stroll the treelined boulevards, and enjoy eating very well for no more than $10-$20 a head.

On “the other side of town” right next to the main railway station is the popular and comfortable Hotel Mercure Hanoi La Gare (www.mercure.com). Whether you stay at the Hilton Hanoi Opera or the Mercure La Gare, both properties are within walking distance of two of Hanoi’s must-see attractions; the Old Quarter, and Hoan Kiem Lake (“Lake of the Returned Sword”) where the Golden Turtle God surfaced to reclaim a magic sword previously given to the emperor.

The 36 streets and laneways of the Old Quarter are the foundation blocks of Hanoi and also the birthplace of the communist/nationalist uprising that emerged in 1907 as the Tonkin Free School Movement.

Hoan Kiem Lake is where the locals like to display their wares, and provides a wonderful location to buy a coffee or a beer or three; and to leisurely take in the passing parade.

And at the lake’s northern end, the Temple of the Jade Mountain on Jade Islet is somewhere you can gain at least some appreciation of the Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist philosophies that are the cornerstones of Vietnamese spiritual life.

Don’t get scammed with these top tips Can you imagine a world without email? Now an integral part of human communication, email allows us to instantly communicate with others in a fast and free manner. It’s become a vital everyday tool for people and businesses alike – and snail mail seems like something from a century ago!

Unfortunately, crooks across the world are also benefiting from the advantages that email brings, using it as a quick and easy medium with which to fleece money from unsuspecting people.

From where can I receive a scam email?

Scammers can disguise phishing emails to appear as if they are coming from all sorts of reputable sources. These include everything from your bank or email provider to online auction and shopping websites. It therefore pays to keep an extra wary eye out nowadays and raise your suspicions.

What are the signs I should look out for?

If you receive an email that looks like it’s from your bank but something seems out of place, check the address it came from. The domain of the address should be from your bank, not a free email provider such as Gmail or Yahoo.

Another tell-tale sign of a phishing attempt is requests for personal or confidential information. Remember that your bank will NEVER ask for your online banking password or credit card PIN, so if you see this request, you should be wary.

Scam emails also use urgent wording to try and intimidate the recipient and get them to hurry headfirst into their trap.

For example, the email might state that the customer’s account will be closed if they don’t click a link ‘immediately’.

Lastly, watch out for emails that begin with a generic greeting, such as ‘Dear Valued Customer’. If you’re a member of a truly loving bank, they’d make sure to personally address each piece of correspondence to you!

What are the next steps to take?

If you receive a scam email related to your bank, you should let them know immediately – tell them when you received the email and the basic gist of its contents. A reliable bank will warn other customers, and they need your help and input to do this. As many scam emails have the potential to carry a harmful virus, it’s a good idea to completely delete it.

How does fitness feature in your life?

Like everyone, I myself have a journey. I have throughout the years tried to stay on a balanced path of a healthy lifestyle; both in mind and body.

I tried many fads and programs that came around promoting good nutrition and physical wellbeing.

I succeeded at times and enjoyed great rewards and then just as easily fell apart as it became too much ‘hard work’.

I have always enjoyed exercise, food and a good lifestyle but being able to find a “healthy” balance and remain focussed can not only play havoc on the body but also do horrible things to your mind.

Thoughts of unworthiness and self-doubt can overcome you and then the dreaded vicious circle begins that you so badly want to escape from but don’t know where to begin.

After seven years of fighting myself and trying so many different things I stopped contemplating and finally took the step I had wanted to and joined this amazing industry on a professional level where I knew the ability to learn would be endless.

And yes, I still am and always will be very much on my journey; one that has made me much more confident and have a more positive approach.

With so much knowledge out there to learn, the hope that I too could actually help assist other people on their journey to a healthier, more balanced lifestyle would be

What you need to know about UTIs

Time to leave the Dark Ages and cooperate!

Pyelonephritis is a type of bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI) that affects one or both kidneys. It can be serious because of the important function of the kidneys.

The urinary tract is the body’s drainage system for removing wastes and excess water. It includes two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder and a urethra.

The kidneys are located near the middle of the back, just below the rib cage, one on each side of the spine. Urine flows from the kidneys to the bladder through tubes called the ureters. The bladder stores urine until releasing it through urination. When the bladder empties, urine flows out of the body through a tube called the urethra at the bottom of the bladder.

Bacteria can move to the kidneys from the bladder or can be carried through the bloodstream. If pyelonephritis isn’t treated straight away it can result in sepsis.

A UTI in the bladder that does not move to the kidneys is called cystitis.

People most at risk for pyelonephritis are those who have a UTI and those with a structural, or anatomic problem in the urinary tract.

Urine normally flows only in one direction, from the kidneys to the bladder. However, the flow of urine may be blocked in people with a structural defect of the urinary tract, a kidney stone, or an enlarged prostate. Urine can also back up, or reflux, into one or both kidneys.

Most people with pyelonephritis do not have complications if appropriately treated with antibiotics. Occasionally, pyelonephritis may cause kidney scarring, which can lead to chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure and kidney failure.

However, these problems usually occur in people with a structural problem in the urinary tract, kidney disease, or repeated episodes of pyelonephritis.

Symptoms range from mild to severe, but include fever, chills or sweats, abdominal or back pain, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, and dysuria (which is pain discomfort when you urinate or having a frequent urge to urinate).

For too many years to count many doctors have refused to acknowledge the value of naturopaths and medical herbalists, often ridiculing their patients for visiting a naturopath to seek treatment.

Yet, where an enlightened physician joins with a naturopath the results for the patient are vastly improved and the reputation of the doctor improves in the community.

Doctors focus on symptoms and specialised areas of the human body or emotions.

Naturopaths treat the whole person – body, mind and spirit.

There are many instances where a doctor has to focus on a particular organ to prevent deterioration or even death.

However, time and time again it has been shown that where a natural therapist, including lifestyle coaches and nutritionists/dieticians are included in the treating team, the recovery is usually faster and the damage due to harsh treatment or surgery is limited.

Often the patient makes a full and often speedy recovery.

This is especially true in cancer treatment.

Natural therapies are more and more becoming seen as complementary to orthodox treatment and can strengthen the person taking the orthodox treatment, often requiring lower doses of chemotherapy agents, and definitely speeding up recovery after treatment.

The oncologist has nothing to lose and everything to gain by allying him or herself with a natural therapist – and treating them as the professionals they are.

I have been invited to an oncology conference in Japan for four days in April.

This conference was by invitation only and includes a number of naturopaths.

Japan, China, and many states in Europe and the US recognise the value of naturopaths and the major benefits to patient outcomes.

It is about time that Australia came out of the Dark Ages and joined with more enlightened parts of the world.

Are dog parks right for your dog?

Organising your medication routine

We all love to see dogs happily roaming around with doggy friends enjoying life. However, not every dog enjoys being in a dog park and not every dog park is appropriate for your dog. Just like humans, dogs have different personalities and experiences, which change how they feel about being at a dog park.

Before you take your dog to a dog park, check out the park at the time you are most likely to be there. What are the dogs and their owners like at that time? Chances are that the same dogs will show up at the same time each week. How many dogs are there at that time? Do the dogs surround any new dog that comes? Do any of the dogs appear to be bullying other dogs? Are the owners monitoring the play or just talking amongst themselves? Are the owners tolerant and friendly to other dogs? Do people bring toys, balls or frisbees and do these cause conflict amongst the dogs?

Are a lot of the dogs not de-sexed males? Is there a separate area for smaller dogs? All these questions are important to know if the dog park is the correct environment for your dog.

Dogs need to exercise and play. However this needs to be a good experience for everyone. Don’t think that playtime at home with you is not also fun. For some dogs the park is an overwhelming experience and playtime at home or with one or two doggy friends in a controlled environment is a much happier time for all.

When dogs feel threatened or uncomfortable they have two main responses; either flight or fight. This is a physiological reaction which is beyond the dog’s control. Some dogs when faced with a dog park full of animals will feel overwhelmed and threatened. Some dogs can learn to be less threatened by a process of desensitisation, or getting used to it, however others will always find this situation overwhelming. One of the main concerns is your inability as a dog owner to control the situation.

Remember that some dogs will love the park and others will love staying home more and playing with you. This has a lot to do with how they are and a bit to do with how they are trained but just like children, all dogs are different and enjoy different things in life. If your dog is frightened or becomes aggressive at the park it may not be for them.

Many people take many types of medication and taking the right doses at the right time can be a challenge. If you need to travel, lead a busy lifestyle or don’t have a great memory it can be even harder.

For older people, many fail to take their medications as prescribed, meaning they don’t get the lifesaving benefits from them or suffer unnecessary side effects. And all this is easily preventable.

One of the safest and simplest ways to ensure you take the right dose of medication is to talk to your pharmacist about a medication pack. These are blister packs, sometimes known as ‘Webster Packs’ that organise the doses for each day in one place according to the time and day they need to be taken.

This makes is very easy to manage medication and know what to take and when.

The pharmacist takes the doctor’s prescriptions and dispenses the medication into a securely sealed blister pack, protecting the medication – leaving no chance of spills or mixups.

The pack lists all contents plus provides vital information for hospital or ambulance staff in the case of emergency.

Many think these packs are just for older people who may have trouble remembering when to take their medication.

However I am seeing a lot of people now using the packs for convenience, especially those who lead busy lives.

For them it’s very simple to have all of their medication in the right doses in one spot to quickly take before they head out the door to work.

Some even leave a strip of the medications, for example their lunchtime dose, in a secure place at work.

Another reason they make life easier is the pharmacist will organise the prescriptions to be filled at one time. This way you cut down the trips to the chemist.

Many people are affected by cancer but only a few find themselves in the same tragic predicament as Cranebrook resident Hannah Hammond is in.

Ms Hammond, who is 21-yearsold, found out earlier this year that her mother Tracie had been re-diagnosed with oesophageal cancer after 10 years in remission.

Along with the help of her elder sister Hollie, she decided to organise a fundraiser but was struck with a second wave of bad news when her father, Patrick, was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

She is now holding a fundraiser for both parents, to be held at CrossFit HF gym in Cranebrook.

The fundraiser is open to the public, and Ms Hammond will be shaving her head and taking donations or pledges. There will also be a sausage sizzle, refreshments and snacks available on the day.

“I’m trying to do something that requires a little bit of bravery from myself I guess, since they’ll need to have their bravery later on,” Ms Hammond said.

The fundraiser will be held on Sunday, April 13 at 2pm at CrossFit HF gym, on Lambridge Street, Cranebrook. To donate contact Hannah on 0433 362 787.

SHE MAY have been raised in the UK but since Sheila Mawson moved to Penrith 33 years ago, she has become a true Aussie. Sheila, who previously lived in Yorkshire in England, moved to Australia in 1981 to help improve her husband’s health.

The couple went on to have 10 happy years together in Australia, and Sheila still enjoys the company of her two children and three grandchildren.

Sheila was once in charge of the training centre for Franklins and got to travel across Australia for her job. She also has a passion for dancing and loves a variety of music.

Sheila now lives at Mountain View Retreat Retirement Village in Penrith, and said that moving there was “the best thing I ever did”. Her son and his family visit every weekend and take her to the club to meet her friends.

ith caravan and camping accounting for 30 per cent of overall tourism growth in NSW, it comes as no surprise that more seniors are hooking up the van for a holiday.

“Caravan and camping is now experiencing significant growth – punching well above its weight and making it a major contributor to the NSW economy,” said Caravan and Camping Industry Association NSW CEO, Lyndel Gray.

“In the year to December 2013, close to 2.4 million people stayed in commercial caravan or camping accommodation in this state, delivering more than 11 million visitor nights. This is an additional 303,000 visitors to commercial caravan parks on the previous year, and an additional 727,000 visitor nights.”

The figures have come from a recent National Visitor Survey of Australia.

“Of the overall number of caravan and camping visitors to NSW, 80 per cent are engaged in holiday and leisure activities that bring significant benefits for the

Although the Child/Youth Opal card has already been launched, Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian recently announced that the Gold Opal Senior/ Pensioner card will not be available until later this year.

The card is available for any customer who is currently eligible for the

Pensioner Excursion Ticket, and the price will be capped at $2.50.

“I am pleased to confirm the Gold Opal Senior/Pensioner card will be available before the end of the year and fares for seniors and pensioners will remain capped at $2.50 for the day,” Ms Berejiklian said.

As new technology is installed on buses to prepare for the roll-out of the Opal Senior/Pensioner card, there will be changes to the way seniors purchase their paper Pensioner Excursion Tickets in the future. Purchasing the Pensioner Excursion Tickets on board the bus will be phased out, with customers required to buy their tickets before they travel.
