Students build skills and experience Autistic students at a local high school have been taking part in a special building project with the help of Bunnings...

A

utistic children at Cambridge Park High School will now have a comfortable environment to enjoy during recess and lunch after the school, with help from Bunnings Warehouse North Penrith, renovated the Support Office courtyard recently.

Team members from Bunnings Warehouse have been helping the school to install a shade sail, paint the floor, attach bamboo screening to the area, assemble garden beds and affix decking to the walls to help create a suitable environment for the children at the school.

“The aim was to create an outdoor learning environment and provide the students with the opportunity to participate in the activity,” Principal of the school, Kay Rigas said.

The renovation has helped the children build their skills with the garden helping to teach the students how to care for plants For the past few weeks the autistic students have been working with Bunnings Warehouse to ensure the area will be ready for them to use within the next week after the weather delayed the progress.

“There are 24 autistic children at the school and they can all fit comfortably in this space that will hopefully feel like it’s their own,” Ms Rigas said.

NANCY’S BACK Some people retire with plans to go fishing, play golf, enjoy long days of leisure. And then there are people like Nancy Messina, who barely six months into her retirement has launched a new business, opening Richardson & Wrench Jordan Springs/Werrington County.

In fact the only part of her retirement that is running true to tradition is that Nancy will spend more time with family; her daughter Nina will be joining her in the new agency.

For Nancy, the chance to open her own real estate agency and work alongside her daughter is a lifetime ambition and the culmination of two decades in which she has been selling house and land in new developments across Western Sydney.

Over the years she has worked for some of Australia’s biggest development companies such as Clarendon Homes, Mirvac and Lend Lease. Her last assignment was the 3000lot development Jordan Springs which she launched four years ago and left for her shortlived retirement at the end of last year.

Nancy has a clear vision of the real estate agency she intends to build and it’s based on the 20 years she spent helping hundreds of people establish their dream home. She sees herself being equal part buyers agent, sales agent, advocate and adviser putting all her years of experience liaising with builders, developers and trades at the disposal of her clients.

Navigating home designs and finance can be difficult for the young and not so young and Nancy sees herself bridging the gap to ensure a good sale on the one hand and a wise

purchase on the other.

And while Jordan Springs is familiar territory to her, Nancy is equally excited about offering her sales expertise to residents in the more established areas of Werrington County, Werrington Downs, Cranebrook, Llandilo, Cambridge Park and Cambridge Gardens.

She knows Western Sydney like a local, because she is. Migrating to Australia with her parents in 1956 the family settled first in Newtown, where Nancy was dux of her school, before moving to Fairfield where they enjoyed the luxury of a home and backyard with room for chooks and vegetables. Bond Imaging has sold its Cremorne commercial facility for

$9 million in a move that marks the end of a 45-year era for the imaging specialist. Two individual private investors secured the 2-12 Gwynne Street property, which comprises three allotments covering a total area of 2,000sqm. The sale represented a record rate of $4,500 per square metre. CBRE’s Jamus Campbell, Ed Wright and David Minty, in conjunction with co-agents Teska Carson, negotiated the sale on behalf of Bond Imaging, who has occupied the site for more than 45 years.

hen taking on a project like a bathroom renovation you can generally

go two ways.

You can renovate yourself or hire a professional to do all the work.

When doing the renovation yourself some of the things you should take into consideration are: Room design – decide where you want to place your items, remembering that the toilet is the most costly to relocate if needed.

Walls – is there asbestos involved? If so, you will need a professional to remove it.

Bricks may require wall chasing, if you are changing things around.

What’s behind the walls are the pipes, galvanized steel, copper or one of the many plastics available now.

Are the electrical cables to the correct standard?

Has the timber started to rot out?

Have you another toilet or shower you can use, if not you may need to look at hiring a portable shower/toilet.

Then of course you need to pick your tiles, toilets, basins and tap ware.

When ordering your toilet make sure the outlet will line up with your existing drainage.

Otherwise you will have to divert the drainage which can be quite costly especially if the tiling has been completed.

You can do some of the physical work yourself except where it comes to plumbing, electrical or major structural work where you will need to hire the appropriate tradesperson.

In doing so firstly check their licenses on the fair trading website at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au.

Otherwise you can hire a bathroom renovation company that

takes care of the lot. And then you don’t have to lift a finger!

See how long they have been trading for and if they are local, have they done any bathrooms in the area.

A good company will be able to provide all the trades required for your bathroom renovation.

Of course check their license and try to get at least two quotes.

Make sure you explain exactly what you want, even a sketch of what you would like, with some brochures of bathroom fixtures to help to stop any confusion Renovating a bathroom is no easy task but given we spend so much time in there, it’s always a good idea.

Make sure you do your research and answer all the questions you need to before you begin.

hen you’re planning a renovation most people are focused on all the bigger areas like the bathroom, kitchen or living space. These types of projects take time and can require a nice sized budget.

Spaces like the kitchen or bathroom can also take up a lot of time, and aren’t always short term targets. An easy and quick way to add personality and atmosphere to your home is to update the entrance.

The entry to your house is the first thing people see when they arrive, and the last thing they remember when they leave.

It makes your house stand out, and adds that all important “street appeal”.

Sometimes the smallest transformations, make the biggest impact.

Below, we outline the steps

to creating a perfectly painted front door: 1. Remove the front door from the doorframe and place on sawhorses or a stable bench.

(Remember to use a drop sheet underneath!). Then, remove any hardware like handles and hinges from the door.

2. Mask any glass panels (if you have them) and clean the door with sugar soap. Selleys have one of the best ones around.

Allow enough time for the door to dry.

3. If the existing paint on the door is in good condition then you don’t need to worry about using a primer. If not, lightly sand and apply one coat of oilbased primer before painting.

4. Once the primer dries, apply one coat of paint (from top to the bottom) to the door. Leave to dry and then repeat.

5. Once the paint on the door is dry, and you are happy with the coverage, re-attach the hardware and hang the door.

Oh, and remember to choose a paint/finish that is suitable for exterior use. We would recommend high gloss aqua enamel paint for a front door, but talk to a local paint speciality store.
