You’ll be toe-tapping like it’s an Irish pub of old

ver the last few decades there have been several major Irish music and dance productions touring the globe. Shows like ‘Riverdance’ and ‘Lord of The Dance’ have delighted audiences and promoted Irish music to the masses. But for producer Eric Dessauvages there was always something missing from these shows.

“The audience gets in the show much quicker.” The music for the show is played on traditional Irish instruments, like the Bodhran, an Irish drum, the fiddle and the uilleann pipes, a traditional Irish bag pipe. Along with the musicians there are 18 Irish Dancers on stage performing group and solo numbers. The talent here is clearly strong, with many of the dancers having toured with shows like ‘Lord of the Dance’ and ‘Riverdance’, as well as being placed in the top 10 during the 2013 World Championship of Irish Dancing in London. When choosing who can perform in the show, Dessauvages likes to ensure that the dancers have a strong link to the Irish culture. “All the dancers and musicians started to learn music and dance when they were four or five-years-old. So they all have the same kind of backgrounds and come from a very long cultural history. And it means something for them as well,” he said. Though he receives many resumes from people around the world who practice Irish dance, Dessauvages prefers to involve performers who have grown up in Ireland. “For the artist this background corresponds to a very strong cultural aspect of the Irish culture,” he said. “It really means a lot for them. They are pushed by their families to do that. It’s a very old tradition, which is repeated generation after generation. Nobody knew that before ‘Riverdance’ and ‘Lord of the Dance’.” For Dessauvages the aim of the ‘Celtic

Legends’ production is simple. Give audiences an experience they would only find in Ireland. “The idea is to recreate the ambience you would have on a Saturday night in an Irish pub in Ireland with people playing music and a few dancers, but of course we’ve got a much bigger production because we have 24 artists on stage,” he said. The success of Irish productions surely says something about the connection audiences feel to Irish music. Dessauvages believes it’s the energy that sets their music apart from that of other countries. “The music is very, very lively,” he said. Though the ‘Celtic Legends’ have performed for more than a million people around the globe over the last decade, this will be the first time the production has made it to Australia. Talking to Dessauvages you can tell that he is excited to finally be able to bring the show to our shores. “We are very happy with it. It’s going to be a tough tour because it’s two months on the road, 55 performances in 40 different places, but it’s going to be fantastic. We are really all delighted and impatient to be there,” he said. “I’m quite sure the audience will be fantastic because I’ve had the chance to go to Australia a couple of times and the Australian people are lovely, fantastic, very good – so this is another reason why we are excited to get there.” ‘Celtic Legends’ will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Monday, October 20. “When I saw the success of ‘Riverdance’ and ‘Lord of the Dance’, which are really fantastic shows, I thought it was a bit of a shame that those shows were made as Americanised productions,” he said. This prompted Dessauvages to get together with friends, musicians and choreographers to come up with something a little different to the shows that were touring at the time. “We thought about creating a real show, a traditional show like you would see in Ireland with live music,” the producer explained. And so in 2001 ‘Celtic Legends’ was born in Connemara, a beautiful area in the west of Ireland. The show features traditional Irish dance and music, which is presented live, something that gives ‘Celtic Legends’ a more stripped back and authentic feel. “That makes a huge difference during the performance because it’s based on live music and there’s musicians and dancers on stage, there’s a better interaction with the audience,” Dessauvages said.

VOLUNTEERS While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices. To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. ducing Ash Grunwald’ back in 2002 the 37-year-old musician has been delighting listeners with his soulful tunes and infectious energy. After touring the US with good friend and fellow Aussie Xavier Rudd in June

and July, Ash is back home and in the middle of a national tour that will include a stop off at Parramatta’s Collector Hotel. In the 12 years since his first release Ash has produced seven studio albums in total including his most recent release, 2013’s ‘Gargantua’, which saw him collaborate with Scott Owen and Andy Strachan from Aussie rock group The Living End. The album features a mix of original tracks, cover songs and reworkings of some of Ash’s most popular tracks. Ash Grunwald will be performing at Collector Hotel on Friday, September 19. arren Percival has been quite busy since he was crowned runner up on the 2012 season of ‘The Voice’. Since his time on the show the soulsinger and accomplished entertainer has released two albums ‘Happy Home’ and ‘Tribute to Ray Charles’. With the release of his latest album ‘Lovelife’ Darren is back on the road, bringing his music to audiences at Rooty Hill RSL this September. The album surely lives up to its title with tracks like ‘Are You Ready For Love’, ‘To Love Somebody’, ‘Make You Feel My Love’, ‘All You Need Is Love’ and of course the title track ‘Lovelife’. This is definitely one for the romantics out there. The tour will feature original tracks like ‘We Danced All Night’ as well as classics from artists including The Bee Gees, Elton John, The Beatles and Norah Jones. Darren’s musical skills reach far beyond his singing ability. He has also been an adopter of a technique called live looping, where an artist will record vocal sounds live on stage, which are then layered to create the sound of a live band. He performs this unique looping sound under an alter-ego known as ‘Mr Percival’. With a wealth of experience as a

Roll the Dice and stir up some controversy hen it comes to controversial American comedians, aside from the late, great Lenny Bruce, there are few who can hold a candle to Andrew Dice Clay. Since he first stepped on stage at a Brooklyn comedy club in the late 1970s, he has courted controversy pretty much everywhere – most notably being banned for life on MTV after a ribald appearance at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that The Diceman is a heavyweight of comedy – holding the honour of selling out two nights at Madison Square Garden.

Can’t get enough ockers The Love Junkies certainly haven’t wasted any time when it comes to releasing music. Their first EP – ‘Flight Test’ – was released in April this year and on September 5 the Perth trio will release their second EP, ‘Blowing On the Devil’s Strumpet’. To celebrate the guys will be heading off on a tour around the country, including a stop off at Tattersalls Hotel on Friday, September 19. The Perth three piece have had a pretty big year, including four Australian tours along with shows in Vietnam and Singapore. This year has also seen the guys sign with Siiick Records, a German-based label and in 2013 The Love Junkies took out Rock Act of the Year, Drummer / Percussionist of the Year and Breakthrough Act at the West Australian Music Awards. The new EP was recorded and produced in Perth, at the historic Astor Theatre.

ANDREW DICE CLAY ENMORE THEATRE WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8 came in 1988 when he did a seven minute set at Rodney Dangerfield’s comedy club. From there, he snagged his own special on HBO, the starring role in one of the most underrated comedies of all time – ‘The Adventures of Ford Fairlane’ – and such massive gigs as Madison Square Garden and performing in front of the largest audience ever for a comedian, alongside Guns and Roses at the 1992 Rose Bowl. While comedy has always been his main creative outlet, Clay has courted both the silver and small screen since he first stepped on stage.

Full House set for a shock revival? The best news ever broke last week that my favourite show growing up ‘Full House’ is set for a revival. Yes, the show that brought us the Olsen Twins and John Stamos could return to our screens in the not too distant future with most of the original cast back on deck. It’s also understood, Warner Bros, who made the show from 1987-1995 is also keen on the idea.

Castmates looking to return to the new series of ‘Full House’ include John Stamos (Uncle Jesse), Candace Cameron (D.J), Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie) and Andrea Barber (Kimmy) while Bob Saget (Danny) and Dave Coulier (Joey) are involved in some way also. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely the Olsen Twins will return though. They seem to have very much moved on.

Dancing with the Stars announced their latest celebrity dancers last week with Lynne McGranger (Irene on ‘Home and Away’), Mark Holden (‘Australian Idol’ judge) and Ricki-Lee Coulter headlining the series. Torah Bright, Eamon Sullivan and Matt Cooper are also there.

Tragic news last week after an audio technician working on the long running TV series ‘Cops’ was accidently shot and killed by police when the show was filming a robbery in Nebraska. The man, Bryce Dion, had been working on the hit show for seven years.

Long-running show ‘Boardwalk Empire’ returns to Showcase this Monday, September 8 express from US. The hit HBO series, which will embark on its fifth and final season, will air at 5.30pm with a primetime replay later that night. It will jump forward seven years for its final episodes.

Huge news for fans of the mega hit ‘Friends’ with plans underway to bring Central Perk, the famous coffee shop in the series, to life. In honour of the show’s 20th anniversary, a real exact replica of Central Perk will pop up in New York City for one month serving free coffee.

enrith Musical Comedy Company is putting the final touches on its production of ‘Legally Blonde’, which opens next Friday at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre. The musical is based on the novel Legally Blonde by Amanda Brown and the hit 2001 film of the same name. It tells the story of Elle Woods, the ditzy party-hard blonde who enrols at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. Penrith Musical Comedy Company’s Grant Jones said the show is expected to be a hit with audiences. “‘Legally Blonde’ is just a really fun musical and audiences will leave the theatre with the biggest smile on their faces,” Jones said. “We have assembled a great cast for the NSW Amateur Premiere of the show and rehearsals have been an absolute blast… we can’t wait!” Legally Blonde plays at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith from September 12.

Directed by Anthony Brown, the show is a gothic mystery set in 1937 and follows the story of Mrs Venable, who is dealing with the death of her son Sebastian. Catherine Holly, the niece of Mrs Venable, is accused of being insane when she recounts the truth behind Sebastian’s death. His mother will do anything to run from the secrets of Sebastian’s life, including threatening to lobotomise Catherine. ‘Suddenly, Last Summer’ has something for everyone, suspense, passion, and lyrical dialogue with both real and fantasy elements. It’s an intense play which will surely have audiences captivated with the mystery and secrets that lie beneath the surface. ‘Suddenly, Last Summer’ is suitable for those over the age of 15.

Starring: George Clooney, Matt Damon and Bill Murray Though we hear many different war stories of courage and bravery, ‘The Monuments Men’ takes a look at the true story of a World War II platoon, who had a rather unique mission. The Monuments Men were a group of seven art historians, curators and museum directors who were given the task of going into Germany to rescue important artworks from the hands of the Nazis, who wished to destroy each and every masterpiece before the Reich fell. In the process the men put their lives at risk to ensure the safe return of these cultural artefacts to their rightful owner. The Monuments Men are played by a star studded line-up including George Clooney, Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville and Jean Dujardin. Joining them is Aussie actress Cate Blanchett as Rose Valland – curator at Paris’ Jeu de Paume Museum – who helped provide information on the whereabouts of the artworks, which had been stored by the Nazis’ at the museum.

If you are a fan of action or disaster movies then ‘Into The Storm’ will be right up your alley. The film sees the town of Silverton dealing with the mother of all storms, a combination of several unpredictable tornadoes that have joined forces to wreck havoc on the town. The residents of Silverton are forced to battle against the elements, trying to survive long enough to make it through the deadly storm. While some are running for cover, a group of stormchasers are risking their lives to get closer to the group of tornadoes. The story is told through footage from townspeople, thrill-seekers and storm chasers, which helps to give film goers a new experience, putting them right in the eye of this mega storm. The cast includes ‘The Hobbit’ star Richard Armitage as Vice Principal, football coach and English teacher at Silverton High School, who must race through the deadly storm in an attempt to find his lost son. ‘Into The Storm’ was directed by Steven Quale.

THE KOOKS LISTEN Out Now Fans of The Kooks rejoice! The Brit rockers are back with a new album, their fourth release titled ‘Listen’. It’s been three years since their previous release, 2011’s ‘Junk of the Heart’ and in that time the guys have acquired a new band mate, drummer Alexis Nunez who took over from Paul Garred in 2012. The band, which formed in 2004 in Sussex has gained success around the globe with stand out tracks like ‘Naive’ and ‘Seaside’ but now it’s time to try something new. ‘Down’ is the first single to be released from the album and it sure is a catchy little ditty. It’s definitely a different direction for The Kooks but boy has the risk paid off. This is a stand out feel good R ‘n’ B influenced track with a grove that makes you want to dance. Second single ‘Around Town’ is a blend of rock and funk influences and is another standout track, while third single ‘Bad Habit’ is smooth upbeat rock at its best, a sound that The Kooks always do so well. After listening to the tracks that have been released so far it’s clear that this is not the same Kooks that fans will recognise from the band’s first album, 2006’s ‘Inside In/Inside Out’. But when the new sound is this good does it really matter.

Fans of ‘Warriors Orochi 3’ will be happy to know that a new game in the series has just been released. ‘Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate’ builds on ‘Warriors Orochi 3’ with new modes, actions and characters. The story sees the heroes back and called to battle again by a mysterious stone. Along with the main story there are plenty of side stories to explore as well. This release has plenty of features including

Tribute to history of Chain of Ponds DAVID ELLIS

he Adelaide Hills’ Chain of Ponds have chosen an unusual name for their Pinot Grigio – Amelia’s Letter – and there’s an equally unusual story behind it. Back in the late 1880s at Chain of Ponds, about 30 kilometres out of Adelaide, blacksmith and wheelwright James Caust decided to visit family in homeland Cornwall after the death of his wife, and on the long sailing trip to Southampton penned a letter to his youngest daughter, Amelia. It was a long, touching and humorous account of his journey and was written in quaint Cornish. That 126-year old Letter survives to this day, and Chain of Ponds have dedicated the name Amelia’s Letter to their annual Pinot Grigio wines since 2010. Their latest, the 2013, is a lovely drop with a pear and ripe peach intensity coupled with a touch of apple, wonderful minerality and a creamy finish. Great buying at $22 to enjoy with oven-baked salmon or a roasted pork tenderloin. One to note: Barbera is the second most widely grown variety in Italy, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that it was established here, with the first vines planted at Mudgee in NSW and from there introduced later into the Hunter Valley by Andrew Margan. Today Andrew’s Margan White Label Barbera is a wine you can happily buy now and drink now as they do in Barbera’s homeland, but will also develop wonderfully well with anything up to 10 years or more in the cellar. Beautifully savoury on the palate with a somewhat red currant tartness, good acid and finegrained tannins, it’s well worth the $40.

ast weekend saw hordes of visitors flock to the 171st Penrith District Show to check out a range of displays, events and fun activities. There was plenty to keep the crowds busy; from ring events including horse events and dog high jump events, to art and craft displays, to the always popular wood-chopping events. There was also a range of entertainment, including music and dance and plenty of rides for the kids. Car fanatics were well looked after with The Precision Driving Team on hand to showcase a range of performance routines, along with the return of the Penrith Show Ute Muster on Sunday. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I really enjoy doing the Olympic lifts – the snatch, and clean and jerk, as well as gymnastic movements. How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? Two things. I am lucky that I have a lot of internal motivation and drive to be the best that I can, so that keeps me going. I know that if I want to get better at something I need to work at it and nobody is going to do it for me. The days where I do feel like “taking it easy” I try to train the things that I am better at or try to stay light and work technique, that way I am still benefitting from that session.

How does fitness feature in your life? I have been a trainer since the end of 2010. I got into it as I had been doing a lot of training myself and had completely changed my own life. I had experienced both ends of the spectrum. I was very obsessive and went to desperate measures about being thin throughout my high school years and then when I left school had put on weight– not a great deal but still wasn’t happy with how I looked. Now I have finally found a balance. I no longer focus on my appearance as a measure of how I am going. Instead I have performance based goals. It helps that I am now competitive in the sport of CrossFit, which requires me to have a high level of strength, as well as fitness. I now focus on being as strong and as fit that I can possibly be. I have qualified for the Australian CrossFit regionals for the last four years, competed with the CrossFit Active team at the CrossFit games in the USA in 2013 and was Shape Magazine’s Fit Chick challenge winner in 2013 and came second this year.

People often ask me ‘should I be Paleo?’ This refers to a way of eating based on what our cavemen ancestors ate during the Paleolithic Era – covering our first attempts at stone tools millions of years ago, until we first started forms of agriculture about 10,000 years ago. Skeletal remains show that humans were stronger, more robust and seemed in better physical shape back then. There is no doubt real food will definitely make us healthy in any age. But like everything some people take their diet to fanatical proportions. Sometimes the stress on your body from a piece of your friend’s birthday cake will actually be less than the stress of bringing your own sanctioned food and trying to convert everyone at the party to be Paleo! My friend sent me a blog recently that had an interesting outlook. It’s called ‘My Take On Nutrition’ and here’s an excerpt: “Paleo brownies are dumb; I’m neither Paleo nor Zone. However, I avoid grains and processed nasty foods and I do pay attention to portions. I’ve read Cordain and Wolf and applied it. But I don’t feel the need to say, “I’m Paleo”. That’s ridiculous. I’m not Paleo because it’s not freaking 10,000 years ago. “A friend of mine calls Paleo “weight-watchers for men”. It’s a beginner’s observation that is pretty funny because let’s be honest: stressing over what you eat is for girls. I don’t stress over what I eat. I just eat clean. “While I’m on the subject, Paleo dessert recipes are just stupid. I don’t care if it’s Sara Lee brownies or Robb Wolf brownies. They’re still brownies. If you want a snacky-cake, eat a real one. “I generally don’t eat that garbage because I don’t want a set of floppy bologna [breasts]. And anyway, does your body need this? Cavemen did NOT swap Paleo brownie recipes because they were too busy, punching giant mastodons and carrying trees around.” You can check out more online for a laugh but be warned there is some swearing in it.

Just like humans, our pets may suffer from skin allergies that often manifest as itchiness, redness and hot skin. Allergies are an extreme reaction by the body’s immune system to certain triggers called allergens. In dogs and cats these allergens are usually dust mites, plant pollens, grasses, moulds and fleas. Spring and summer are particularly bad seasons for skin problems in pets. The warm weather and humidity causes the emergence of a large flea population and blossoming plants release more pollen into the air. When animals suffer from allergies they will chew their feet, rub their faces, gnaw at or obsessively lick their skin. These actions worsen inflammation and cause broken skin which leads to infection. If your pet shows any of these signs, they may be suffering from allergies. There are many different medications available to help control your pet’s symptoms. Fleas will worsen allergies, and are often the primary culprit. People commonly react and treat fleas in summer when they are visible on the pet. As fleas can breed all year round (even in winter), it is especially important to maintain year round flea control to prevent a flea outbreak during the warmer months. A small percentage of dogs and cats also suffer from food allergies. Unlike seasonal allergies, food allergies are generally present all year round and are not affected by season. Even pets that have been fed the same diet throughout their entire life may develop a food allergy. The New Testament book of Mark opens with these words; “The beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” Tim Keller has said that “the gospel is an announcement of something that has happened in history, something that’s been done for you that changes your status forever.” This is why the announcement about Jesus is such good news; it is not something that is here today and gone tomorrow, the gospel of Jesus is an announcement that will impact all of your life, now and for eternity. Jesus coming into our world brings the good news of forgiveness and life forever with God. Jesus brings peace with God. He brings direction for life. Jesus brings confident hope, that even in the face of the most terrible circumstances, sickness, disappointment, or hurt, nothing will separate you from His love.

In his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel, David Ellis says guests no longer seem content just knocking-off their hotel’s toiletries... A Starwood in the UK is still searching for a grand piano that three men dressed in overalls wheeled out of the hotel’s lobby in 2012, a complete marble fireplace disappeared from a room in California’s Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel (maybe because it featured in ‘Pretty Woman’?) and at a US Holiday Inn a couple booked a room next to the car park… and then loaded their room’s queen bed, sofa, desk and TV into a rental truck left in the car park. In Asia a US$300,000 Andy Warhol painting was stolen from Hong Kong’s W Hotel lounge, a crystal chandelier from the Shangri-la in Hong Kong, and a complete mini-bar from a Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur guestroom. As well as sheets, towels, clock radios and even Gideon Bibles, a hotel in London’s Mayfair had two marble busts of famous personages stolen one day and returned by cab the next, a long-time regular acquired an entire dinner service by ordering nightly room service at his London hotel and pinching an item or two each time, and another donned and walked out in a decorative suit of armour from his UK Best Western hotel’s lobby. One couple in America took their room’s curtains, a bloke unscrewed the numbers off his door in a 5-star English
