COVER STORY

Fall out from epic new single sees band head downunder ith their first album back from their three year hiatus, ‘Save Rock And Roll’, putting Fall Out Boy well and truly back on the musical map, they are certainly striking while the iron is hot with their huge new single ‘Centuries’ and an equally epic ‘Gladiator’-style video to accompany it.

W STEPHEN BISSET

We are also a band who aren’t going to write the same album twice

a truly “kick arse” record, the external pressure that existed in the ‘Follie a Deux’ sessions was virtually non existent. “There was so much more outside scrutiny on ‘Follie’ because of the success of ‘Infinity on High’, but with ‘Save Rock and Roll’ there was probably less pressure because we were totally flying under radar – nobody expected anything from us,” he said. While ‘Save Rock and Roll’ still has echoes of the band’s early punk roots (with nods to bands like the Get Up Kids still evident in their beguiling mish mash of styles), there is a decidedly more pop flavour to proceedings. “When we go into the studio, we always want to be the biggest f***ing band on the planet but we’re also a band who aren’t going to write the same album twice – it’s really important, I think, not to set any limitations on yourself when you’re creating because you’re only going to limit the final product,” Wentz said. Speaking of creativity, there’s also been a fair amount of non-album creativity within the Fall Out Boy camp of late

with Wentz welcoming his second child into the world in August while frontman Patrick Stump became a father in October. “It certainly has been interesting,” Wentz laughed. “Although I have a six-year-old already so, in some ways I was prepared, but it’s always an adventure. But Patrick is a father for the first time and it’s all still very new for him – I haven’t really had a chance to talk to him about it yet because he’s still so in it, but I’m sure he’ll be fine.” For a band that has never been known to paint themselves into any form of genre box, it seems fitting then that when talking legacy, Wentz said he wants Fall Out Boy to be the band that transcends genre. “I would say that I hope at some point Fall Out Boy becomes the descriptor of a style,” he said. “You know how people will say a name like Linkin Park and you immediately think of a certain sound. We want to be that band.” Fall Out Boy play the Soundwave Festival at Olympic Park on Saturday, February 28. See www.soundwavefestival.com.

Friday 7 November 2014 the western weekender • west life

Bass player Pete Wentz told West Life that while the band weren’t planning on writing any new material, the song came about at just the right time. “Patrick [Stump, vocalist] and I weren’t really planning on working on much and we were on tour in the States with Paramore and Patrick came forward with the song and it just seemed like the time was right,” he said. “The whole song, and also the video, is basically saying that anybody can become a legend – you’ve got one shot so you’d better make it count and that’s how we all feel about the band. So that song came along and basically the plan for the album was built around that.” Before the album drops in early 2015, Fall Out Boy will be heading down our way for their first ever festival stint at Soundwave. While a Fall Out Boy show is a spectacle in and of itself, Wentz said the prospect of a festival bill was always enticing for the band as it was a great breeding ground for new fans. “Yeah, man we’ve never played Soundwave before, but it sure looks like a cool festival – what a great lineup,” he said. “I think we play better to festival crowds because at your own shows everyone is there just to see you, but at festivals there are plenty who aren’t there to see Fall Out Boy so we tend to be much more on our game.” After cutting their teeth in the late 90s Chicago hardcore punk scene (Wentz played in such bands as Racetraitor, Birthright and Extinction) Fall Out Boy quickly found themselves the darlings of the alternative music press thanks largely to their first two genre-bending records ‘Take This to Your Grave’ and ‘Under the Cork Tree’. While the second record saw the band crack the Billboard 100, it was their third album ‘Infinity on High’ featuring the runaway hits ‘Thanks fr th Mmrs’ and ‘This Ain’t a Scene It’s an Arms Race’, that really shot the band into the cultural zeitgeist. Following the release of the follow-up, ‘Follie a Deux’, the band went on a three year hiatus before coming back with ‘Save Rock and Roll’ in 2013. Wentz said that while there was definitely pressure placed on the band internally to come back with

entertainment

No-one was expecting alternative music darlings Fall Out Boy to release huge new single ‘Centuries’. But the song has fans wanting more and so the band couldn’t resist a gig at Soundwave next year...

inger/songwriter Josh Pyke has had a pretty big year when it comes to touring. ‘The Lone Wolf’ tour kicked off in February and after selling out theatres in capital cities across the country he extended the tour to an extra 12 dates, ensuring regional fans didn’t miss out. Now Josh is onto the third leg of the tour, which will see him heading to the Blue Mountains for a gig at Baroque in Katoomba on Friday, December 12. His most recent album – ‘The Beginning and the End of Everything’ – was released last year and has spawned several singles including the title track and ‘Leeward Side’. It debuted at number seven on the ARIA charts and received regular airplay. Along with his solo tour Josh also hit the road this year with fellow Aussie music icons – including You Am I ‘s Tim Rogers, Chris Cheney from The Living End and former Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson – to revive their The Beatles White Album Concert tour. By all accounts the Beatles tour was a massive success. This will be the final leg of ‘The Lone Wolf’ tour so if you’re keen to hear Josh weave his beautiful folk music magic then head up the mountains this December. Josh Pyke will be performing at Baroque in Katoomba on Friday, December 12. Tickets are $35.20. To purchase tickets visit www.oztix.com. au.

ussie comedian Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes has become a regular on TV, radio and stages across the country. Come November he will be heading to Rooty Hill RSL to bring audiences a taste of his quick wit and ‘typical Aussie bloke’ style of comedy. Since leaving the desk of Network Ten’s ‘The Project’ after a five year stint, Hughesy has been back on the road, once again embracing his stand up comedy roots. Not only is he one of our most well known comedians, but also a star on the international comedy circuit, having performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival. The successful comedian has also appeared on several TV shows including ‘Rove’, ABC’s ‘The Glasshouse’ and AFL football show ‘Before the Game’, as well as spending over a decade doing breakfast radio on Melbourne’s Nova 100. With a very full touring schedule Hughesy will have performed for around 60,000 people by December. If you want to be counted in that number then head along when western Sydney gets a taste of this lovable larrikin. Dave Hughes will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, November 29. House Rules Channel 7 2015

DAVE HUGHES ROOTY HILL RSL SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29

Double whammy for House Rules Readers of this column know how much I love the Channel Seven home renovation show ‘House Rules’, so you can almost imagine my excitement when I found out it was coming back next year with two seasons. Just like ‘The Block’ on Nine, ‘House Rules’ will air during the first and second half of 2015. The show really took off this year but the move is a surprise.

Other local productions Seven will definitely be bringing back next are ‘My Kitchen Rules’, ‘The X Factor’, ‘Dancing with the Stars’, ‘Winners and Losers’ and ‘Home and Away’. However, there’s no news yet on ‘The Amazing Race Australia’, ‘Beauty and the Geek’ and ‘The Big Adventure’, which is on our screens now and is a new ‘Survivor’ style show.

Foxtel has announced an interesting new show in conjunction with Channel Ten to air next year. Titled ‘Gogglebox’, the weekly observational series will capture the reactions of ordinary Australians as they watch the nightly news, and cheer their sporting teams.

While Channel Nine are still to make a decision on whether ‘Big Brother’ will return next year, it hasn’t stopped China from announcing their first ever series of the hit reality show. Despite poor ratings here, ‘Big Brother’ is still huge around the world.

Channel Ten will be pleased to hear that many of their new US shows have been given the green light for full season orders. Shows include ‘Madam Secretary’, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ and ‘Scorpion’. Meanwhile, ‘Stalker’ is set to air on Channel Nine sometime soon.

Lastly, Foxtel also announced a number of new and returning productions for 2015 last week. They include: ‘Wentworth’, ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’, ‘Real Housewives’, ‘Selling Houses Australia’, ‘Deadline Gallipoli’, ‘A Place To Call Home’, ‘Grand Designs Australia’ and ‘The Flash’.

DAN DULTAN DIRTY GROUND EP Out Now

‘Love, Rosie’ is an Irish romantic comedy based on Where Rainbows End, the 2004 novel by Cecelia Ahern. The story follows Rose Dunne, played by Lily Collins, and Alex Stewart, played by Sam Claflin who have been best friends since they were just five-years-old. After years of being joined at the hip the friends are separated when Alex moves to Boston to go to college. Though the plan is to have Rosie join him things change when she finds out she’s pregnant to her ex-boyfriend. While Alex is enjoying college life in Boston Rosie is in Ireland raising her child. But that’s not the end of the story. ‘Love, Rosie’ asks the question: do we only get one shot at true love. Lily Collins also starred in the 2009 film ‘The Blind Side’ and 2012’s ‘Mirror Mirror’ while Sam Claflin will no doubt be familiar to audiences as Finnick Odair from ‘The Hunger Games’ series. His other roles include William in 2012’s ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ and Philip in 2011’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’. Author Cecelia Ahern also wrote PS, I Love You which was adapted into the 2007 film of the same name.

Dan Sultan certainly hasn’t wasted much time. In April this year he released a new album, ‘Blackbird’, followed it up with a national tour from June through to August, and now the talented musician is releasing a new solo EP titled ‘Dirty Ground’, which is full of stripped back tracks. Recorded in one day – yes, you read right, just one day – with Jan Skubizewski, the EP features songwriting from some very well-known Aussie musicians including Something for Kate’s Paul Dempsey on the track ‘Mountaintop’ and Paul Kelly on the title track. Accompanied by an acoustic guitar ‘Mountaintop’ perfectly showcases Dan’s rich soulful voice. A good test of a song’s quality is how it sounds without all the bells and whistles and this one well and truly passes with flying colours. There’s something so beautifully timeless about Dan’s music. The ‘Dirty Ground’ EP features B-sides from the ‘Blackbird’ LP. The rest of the songs on the EP have been part of Dan’s collection for a while, though the singer/songwriter felt they would work better as part of a solo release due to the emotion and rawness that define these tracks.

SPECIALISING IN

The Jump Street boys are back. And this time they’re poking fun at the idea of the ‘sequel’ in their follow up to 2012’s ‘21 Jump Street’, which was – very loosely – based on the TV series of the same name, which gave Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) his big break. After their hilarious adventures as undercover cops posing as high school students in the first film it’s no surprise that the sequel follows much the same plot. Except this time Schmidt, played by Jonah Hill, and Jenko, played by Channing Tatum are college students. Once again they get themselves in some very bizarre situations as they attempt to crack the case and prove themselves as genuine cops. The beauty of this sequel is that it doesn’t take itself seriously. The writers are well aware of the cliches and pitfalls of the follow up movie and use that as subject matter for many of the laughs throughout the movie. It’s a really great film for a lazy night in.

WINE

It’s all about that flavour in the Yarra DAVID ELLIS

LOCAL RADIO

he Yarra Valley has garnered an enviable reputation over the past couple of decades for Chardonnays out of makers like Toolangi who planted their first vines there back in December 1995. And the latest release from this small family-owned operation, their 2012, is a veritable explosion in the glass of what Chardonnay is all about, with predominantly citrus grapefruit flavours to the fore and quite extraordinary length (how long the flavour lasts in the back of the throat after swallowing). Owners Garry and Julie Hounsell went in hard with the secateurs for this wine, pruning back heavily to maximise fruit flavour and quality as Yarra Valley vines, with the climate they enjoy, can be quite prolific producers. And interestingly, after being harvested, the fruit was processed at two separate wineries, Yering Station and Oakridge, and the resultant blend put together at Yering Station. This 2012 Toolangi Chardonnay is nicely priced for a premium drop at $25, and with its full-on varietal flavours makes for an ideal partner with everything on the table from simple roast chicken, to grilled lobster if you’re maybe celebrating, or for a more casual outdoor barbecue of veal chops. One to note: If that Toolangi Chardonnay was all about flavour in a white wine, Rosemount Estate’s MV Collection 2012 Shiraz is all about flavour in a red wine. This drop is all flavour, flavour and more flavour – with savoury blackberry to the fore and nice back-up cherry fruit tastes. Pay $25.

PRIMARY ETHICS TEACHERS NEEDED

To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved.

While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices.

Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

ans of ‘Vikings’ will be happy to hear the news that Season Two of the hit TV series is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. ‘Vikings’ comes from the creative mind of Michael Hirst who worked on the series ‘The Tudors’ and the Academy Award winning film ‘Elizabeth’. The story follows Ragnar, played by Travis Fimmel, a young warrior who has dreams of setting sail to conquer new lands and now – after becoming an Earl – his desire to explore the world has become even stronger. Of course the road to victory is never smooth and Ragnar faces many challenges from shifting loyalties to scandalous indiscretions. The Blu-ray pack is packed full of special features including ‘A Warrior Society: Rites of Passage’ film which takes a look at the history behind Viking culture. There’s also ‘My Family, My Enemy’ which looks at the Season 2 story arcs and how the script is influenced by historical events, plus there’s also a behind the scenes look at key battle sequences, as well as commentary from creator Michael Hirst and actor Gustaf Skarsgard, who plays the role of Floki. Vikings Season Two returns on Blu-ray and DVD on November 5 with interactive features available only on blu-ray. Pick up your copy today! West Life has three ‘Vikings’ Season 2 Blu-rays to give away. Just what is your tee saying about you KATHERINE TWEED

life & style

I doubt she’ll believe his explanation. The third most common slogan tee is the one that features some sort of inspirational quote or sentence – one that jumps to mind is ‘believe you can fly’. Sure, it is a nice sentiment but do you really think that I am going to take advice from a t-shirt? Some other types of slogan shirts out there include the ‘keep calm’ shirts, the ‘captain obvious’ type (like a little black dress with ‘little black dress’ written on it), and the descriptive type – seriously, who would wear a shirt that says ‘biatch’? The only one I have ever seen that kind of made me smile was one that said ‘artsy design slogan in tightly kerned Helvetica’ – if you don’t get it, you must like slogan tees. I think that what frustrates me about these shirts is that the majority of those who wear them are only doing so to look cool, which is probably why we wear most trends but slogan tees are actually saying something. Before you walk out wearing your ‘love, money, pizza’ shirt, think about what that is actually saying to the people who have a read. Let me know your thoughts!

katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

Joke shirts take too long to read and can lead to awkward situations

“Hey, I like your t-shirt but what exactly does it say there?â€? is probably a common conversation starter that wearers of slogan tees hear daily. But unfortunately for me they have somehow made it into fashion this season and shoppers can’t seem to get enough of them. I don’t always understand fashion trends and I am sure that most of us just go along with it anyway but this one just seems completely ridiculous. Why on earth would someone want to wear a shirt with a joke on it or a witty line, when most of the time people won’t be able to read it due to a crinkle in the fabric or the way you are sitting? It just doesn’t make sense. There are three particular types of slogan tees that are popular at the moment and seriously, if you walk through a shopping centre without seeing at least one person wearing each, you’re having a lucky day. The first, and my most hated, is the play-on-a-brand-name style. Have you ever seen a person walking around wearing a shirt that says FĂŠline and wonder why they are one; calling themselves a cat and two; spelling feline with an accented ‘e’? That shirt is supposed to be a ‘witty’ play on the French luxury brand CĂŠline. The same goes for ‘homies’ (Hermès) and ‘Ballin’ (Balmain) tops. This is far from classy and upon my first sighting of one, I was not even able to draw out a tiny snigger – what is funny about not being able to afford luxury clothing? The second type of slogan tee that everyone seems to be wearing at the moment is the funny sentence shirts; you know, the ones that take people a whole minute to read and then another minute to get the joke... They can be funny and definitely offer a conversation starter but I think they are just a nuisance and can lead to awkward situations. For example, let’s think about a party situation; a girl walks in wearing a top with a joke on it. A guy begins reading the top from a distance, but starts squinting so that he can read it as the girl keeps moving. The guy’s girlfriend slaps said guy in the face for staring at the chest of another female.

You, your partner and guests are invited to learn about the treatment options for Male Urinary Incontinence and Erectile Dysfunction

Custom made with the customer in mind! One of the many things that we love to do for our clients at York Jewellers is help them with the design and manufacturing process. I myself have probably designed hundreds of custom made pieces for our clients and can truly say that no two pieces are the same. That’s the beauty of it! Whether it be the special task of transforming well loved pieces of jewellery into future family heirlooms, using gems with meaningful memories from many years ago, or designing a customised wedding band to sit along side one of our stunning engagement rings, each and every concept is important. The process to have something designed and hand crafted can take time compared to choosing something ready made but the end result is well worth the wait! We make the process very enjoyable, easy and pressure free for you. You will be invited to come into the store and consult with a designer about what you would like to do. Common requests often include engagement rings, wedding bands, combining diamonds or gemstones from family heirlooms to create a new piece, gifts for loved ones and refreshing older designs as the taste of the wearer evolves. Sometimes our clients bring in images of things that they like, or point out something in the cabinet that catches their eye and we can work from that. We will discuss your wants and needs, your profession, preferences and make suggestions based on what’s important to you. Because our designers work so closely with the workshop (myself, my brother Douglas and our team member Sue are all designers/jewellers) we will be able to give you a great understanding of what can and can’t be done, and how to create the look and feel that you want to get the best end result. We then begin sketching by hand right in front of you to bring your concept to life! What looks to be a simple design can sometimes be quite complex when it comes to the manufacturing process, depending on what needs to be done. Seeing the smile on a client’s face when they try on their unique, one of a kind piece of jewellery for the first time is a great feeling. At York Jewellers our designers are available by appointment and bookings can be made by simply calling the store or emailing through our website. Please visit www. yorkjewellers.com.au to make your appointment.

HOROSCOPES

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Buying something extravagant appeals as long as you can afford it. Avoid being too black and white about relationship issues. There are many shades of grey, as you negotiate and navigate your way through a changing romantic landscape. With Venus visiting your partnership zone, your motto is to compromise.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

JOANNE MADELINE MOORE

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

The week starts with a powerful punch as Mars links up with Pluto and there’s the potential for power struggles, especially with authority figures or work colleagues. Then Mars squares Uranus midweek, resulting in restless, rebellious and even reckless behaviour. It also shortens your limited patience and increases your need for speed.

Creative brainstorming – followed by carefully targeted action – leads to professional progress. For non-working Twins, find ways you can contribute your versatile talents to your local community in a voluntary capacity. It’s a good week to take a long hard look at your daily diet and exercise routine. Healthy habits established now will lead to less problems in the future.

The Venus/Jupiter square stimulates your Libran spending gene early in the week. Then Saturn sends a reality check your way, when you are hit with unexpected expenses. When it comes to a work issue or family matter, you’ll have to ask some hard questions to discover what’s really going on.

Star predictions for the week beginning Nov 9

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Stop sulking and complaining about the tough time you’re going through! This week Mars and Pluto help provide the courage and persistence you need to conquer challenges. Be inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson: “Life’s not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well.”

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Avoid the temptation to be lazy and self-indulgent, no one wants to be around a selfish Sagittarian! Don’t underestimate the positive effect you can have on those around you. Personal projects need to be put on the backburner temporarily as you roll up your sleeves and serve others. So take a look around and see if there is someone you can help; a cause you can champion; or a right you can wrong.

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

When it comes to a romantic relationship, work issue or money matter, avoid being hasty. If you are too slap-dash you’ll just make mistakes along the way. Smart Crabs will come up with a carefully formulated strategy and stick to it. Stern Saturn pours cold water on displays of affection mid-week, so don’t expect positive feedback.

If you try to control loved ones they will resist. Strive to give others plenty of options, personal space and room to shine. Criticising less and praising more is also a good place to start. You may feel discouraged on the weekend, as long-term goals suddenly seem way out of reach. The gap between dreams and reality is wide but achievable.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Lions can too easily get stuck in a self-satisfied rut, doing things you are very good at. But are you challenging yourself? Jupiter is visiting your sign until next August, which encourages you to be much more adventurous. Listen to Georgia O’Keefe: “I’ve been terrified my whole life and it’s never stopped me from doing anything.”

Travel, adventure, rural destinations and foreign countries are highlighted this week, as you explore the big wide world outside your door. But impulsive actions could lead to an argument or accident so pace yourself Aquarius and be extra cautious when travelling, driving, cycling, jogging and walking.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Your creativity and compassion are sparked, as you connect with your inner muse or help a friend in need. Some Virgos will experience deja-vu, as you meet someone special or go somewhere ‘new’ that feels very familiar. Singles – love lies waiting in your local neighbourhood, or via an introduction from a relative.

Group activities look problematic, as someone tries to take over. Your natural inclination is to go into hibernation mode but the more passive you are Pisces, the more stressful the situation will be. Creativity is highlighted mid-week, as a delicious daydream whisks you away into fantasy land.

Bring Christmas cheer to disadvantaged kids In support of The Smith Family’s Toy and Book Appeal, BOQ Branches will be collecting presents throughout November, to help bring Christmas to disadvantaged Australian kids. There are many families across Australia living in financial strain and the reality is thousands of children will wake up on Christmas day without a present to unwrap. This year, The Smith Family aims to deliver over 43,500 new toys and 29,000 new books to disadvantaged children Australia wide. To help make this vision a reality, the BOQ team have our sights set on a national target of 5,000 toys and 2,500 books – or a total value of $100,000 worth of gifts, to support The Smith Family’s appeal. The Smith Family has indicated there is a particular need for gifts that target the nine to 12-year-old age group. Some gift ideas from The Smith Family’s Christmas wish list are: educational games, children’s novels, sporting goods, puzzles and board games, and arts and craft sets. Donated gifts need to be smaller than a school backpack and include batteries if needed. All gifts donated to BOQ will be collected from our branches, stored by Decipha and then delivered to the Smith Family distribution centres by Toll Priority, part of the Toll Group. Acting BOQ CEO, Jon Sutton, said: “It’s a sad reality that there are many kids across Australia who won’t have a single present to unwrap on Christmas day. We have a great opportunity to lend a hand this Christmas through BOQ’s long-running involvement in The Smith Family’s Toy and Book Appeal.” The Smith Family’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Lisa O’Brien says that the ongoing Appeal partnership with BOQ had been invaluable. “Thanks to the support of BOQ and generous Australians, we will be able to deliver toy and book packs to thousands of disadvantaged children who currently receive our education and learning support throughout the year.” Another exciting part to this year’s appeal is that we are transforming our branches into Santa’s workshops! On November 7, BOQ staff will be getting their ‘elf’ on to support the appeal. So pop in and say hello, and help bring Christmas to a disadvantaged child.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

KAHLIA SHIPWAY Having supportive friends is really important

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? There are so many benefits to being fit and healthy so to pick one that stands out is quite hard. I guess energy is a stand out benefit for me, I love waking up each day and feeling so energised, like I can take on any challenge. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Pole dancing; I am completely addicted. Holding your body weight on and off the pole in ways you never thought possible, this sport makes you realise how strong you really are.

Top three tips for good health? 1. Drink a big glass of water on an empty stomach as soon as you wake up. 2. Try to avoid processed foods and supply your body with essential nutrients. 3. Take time out for yourself and relax.

life & style

Biggest health/fitness misconception? That saturated fat is bad for you. Our bodies need good sources of saturated fat to help with healing, energy, hormones and fat burning just to name a few. Good, natural sources of fat include avocado, almonds and coconut oil, butter and fats that come from animals.

How does fitness feature in your life? I started dancing when I was nine-yearsold training in jazz, tap, ballet and Irish dancing. I was training on most week nights and competing in some competitions and performances on the weekends, it was my absolute passion. I began my chef’s apprenticeship when I was 16 and started working all crazy days and hours, so I had to give away dancing to focus on my career. After not doing any form of exercise for eight years and landing a job that gave me a bit of my life back I decided to enrol in pole dancing 18 months ago and since that day I have not looked back. It has changed my life in so many ways and transformed my body. I am stronger, fitter, healthier and happier than I have ever been. Studying fitness has helped me in so many ways and given me a better perspective of where I want to go and what I want to achieve in the future.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy.’ My teachers, friends and idols are amazing; having such supportive people in my life makes it easier to stay motivated. I find that setting goals and working on them each day gives me a lot of motivation to keep going and achieving things that I never thought possible.

A daily ‘must do’? Stretch. Flexibility plays a really important part in pole dancing. The more flexible you become the easier it is to get into more advanced tricks.

Apart from a 17-year-old trying to buy a case of beer there is nobody that wants to age faster than they have to. In fact antiaging is a huge multi-billion dollar industry. There are some very expensive but questionable methods out there. I have a tip that won’t cost you anything and give you a better result than any treatment you could find anywhere. Next time someone asks if you want a soft drink, you should hear the words, ‘want me to speed up your whole aging process’. Drinking sugary soft drinks may accelerate biological ageing as much as smoking, a study has found. The findings, from an analysis of thousands of DNA samples, suggested that sweet fizzy drinks had worse effects on health than just the obesity, heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses they already cause. They actually speed up the rate at which cells age. The study focused on telomeres, which provide a measure of biological ageing. Telomeres’ protective caps on the ends of the chromosomes shorten with age, and short telomeres are associated with chronic problems of aging such as heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer. The researchers found that people who regularly drank sugar-sweetened fizzy drinks had significantly shorter telomeres than those who did not. Professor Elissa Epel, a member of the US research team from the University of California said: “Regular consumption of sugar-sweetened sodas may influence disease development, not only by straining the body’s metabolic control of sugars, but also through accelerated cellular ageing of tissues. “Further, it is possible that soda consumption is associated with telomere shortening in children, as well.” People consuming about two cans of cola were already associated with about five years of additional biological aging, based on telomere shortening. I’m guessing this won’t be mentioned in the next coke ad. In fact next time you’re wasting some time on Facebook why not google up a few health articles? Have a look at undergroundwellness.com for instance, it just might change your life!

Positive reinforcement is all your puppy needs

Being neighbourly has twofold benefits

Bringing a new puppy into your family is a very exciting time! Puppies can be hard work and it can be frustrating when they start to display naughty and unwanted behaviours. Puppy preschool is a great opportunity to start good training techniques early in life. This is also a prime time to socialise your puppy with other people and other dogs. Early socialisation in a positive environment helps them to live a happy life in our community. The goal of our puppy preschool classes is to encourage puppies to learn calm behaviour and good manners. The puppies also have the opportunity to socialise at a young age in a safe environment. Why is training important? An adults dog’s character is dependant on their inherited characteristics plus its social experiences since birth. You, as an owner, have an enormous influence on the development of your puppy. It takes a considerable amount of time to train a puppy correctly, but it is a very worthwhile exercise as it will help prevent bad habits such as a dog that constantly jumps on people. What is our philosophy on training? It is very important to use positive reinforcement when training; this means praising the puppy with food and attention when it displays good behaviour. Puppies respond much better to this manner of training compared with negative reinforcement such as smacking or yelling. Negative reinforcement can result in the development of phobias and fears which can manifest as anxiety and aggression later in life. Puppies have very short attention spans, so short, fun and frequent training sessions work best. It is very important to ignore the unwanted behaviours of your puppy and praise/reward your puppy when it does the correct thing the following time. For example, toilet training is an area that is initially frustrating for all of us! If your puppy urinates inside the house, try to ignore this. When the puppy urinates outside, it is essential that you immediately reward the puppy with lots of attention and food rewards. We run puppy preschool classes on several evenings during the week. It is a great chance to get your puppy on the right track!

Who is my neighbour was a question put to Jesus by a man wanting to justify his lack of care for people in need. Jesus’ response was to tell the story we have come to know as “The Parable of the Good Samaritan.” You can find it in the Bible’s Gospel of Luke. Jesus tells of a man who is attacked and beaten by thieves and left for dead by the roadside. Several people walk around the injured man until finally an outcast of that society, a Samaritan, stopped to help the man, binding his wounds, taking him to an inn and leaving a significant sum of money for his ongoing care. Jesus made two points in this story. Firstly, there is our universal obligation to be a “Good Samaritan,” a neighbour, to anyone in need. Secondly, Jesus was pointing to his own great act of compassion where he would give selflessly of himself, giving his life to pay for the consequences of the fact that none of us treat God as we should or give Him the honour He deserves. The fact that we leave God on the sideline, means we so often experience uncertainty and confusion in life, even feeling overwhelmed by life’s pressures and difficulties. Jesus in his dying on the cross and rising again, has in a sense, healed and bandaged our wounds, promising ongoing care and protection for any person who would commit their life to him. You can be thankful that Jesus was a good neighbour to us, not leaving us on the side of the road, but picking you up and giving you the opportunity for a fresh start in life.

Batman and Robin didn’t really scale tall buildings In his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel, David Ellis says an old mate who has been a near life-long devotee of Batman and Robin comics and movies, has not been the same since doing a tour earlier this year of the Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, California. Because he’d always thought that those who played The Caped Crusader and his juvenile side-kick in the first Batman movies in the 1960s really did scale the outsides of tall buildings for the sake of Saturday afternoon movie-going kids like himself. Thus he was horrified to see on his movie-lot tour how it was really done

– and that was by having the crime-fighting duo supposedly scaling tall buildings by merely having them crawling along a wall-like structure laid flat, safely on the studio floor. Furthermore a picture of the supposed skyscrapers of Gotham City around them was actually projected horizontally on a screen behind them, and while Batman’s cape looked like it was hanging streetwards from his shoulders as he appeared to be climbing vertically, it was simply pulled horizontally from off-screen. Finally to complete the trick, the movie camera was mounted at 90-degrees to the norm. Don’t go looking for answers if you aren’t prepared for them!

nimal Welfare League (AWL) shelters, including one in Kemps Creek, will benefit from a new partnership with Pet Check-in, a pet boarding facilities booking website. In a recent survey conducted by Hanrob Pet Hotels, up to 80 per cent of Australian pet owners would rather cancel or alter their travel plans if they couldn’t make suitable arrangements for their pet. In the lead up to the summer holidays, pet boarding becomes a chief concern for many ‘pet parents’, Pet Check-in founder Gareth Brock said. “As a passionate pet owner and someone who travels quite a lot, I just couldn’t find any information online about reputable boarding facilities,” he said. Pet Check-in audits pet boarding facilities in conjunction with AWL Australia, allowing ‘pet parents’ to travel with peace of mind. “We aim to not just be a website, but to offer trust and reassurance. In consultation with the AWL we developed a 10-point audit check where we visit boarding facilities and assess them based

NSW Government had worked tirelessly with the community to ensure all eligible customers would be well informed about the Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card and its many advantages. “We have been working with the community to ensure the rollout of electronic ticketing is easy to understand and simple to use for customers,” Mr Ajaka said. “It is important that anyone who wants to know more about the Gold Senior/ Pensioner Opal card, should call the Opal Customer Care line, or visit the helpful Opal website.” On Monday, the first day of ticket sales, some 7,000 Gold Opal cards were issued. “We have had an absolutely fantastic response on the first day of the Gold Senior/Pensioner Card, and I’m very pleased so many people have been keen to either call in to the Opal Customer Care Line or go online and apply for the card,” Ms Berejiklian said on Tuesday. “It will make a huge difference for seniors and pensioners when it comes to paying for and using public transport.” To order a Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card customers can call 13 67 25 (13 OPAL) or visit the Opal website at www.opal. com.au. Ordering a card online only takes minutes to apply, and then it takes about one week for the card to be mailed out to the customer’s home.

inister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian has announced that seniors and pensioners can now order their own Gold Opal card if they choose to and pay no more than $2.50 a day to use public transport. Seniors and pensioners can still buy and use their paper Pensioner Excursion Tickets (PET) if they don’t want to use the Gold Opal card. “The new Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card means eligible customers won’t pay more than $2.50 a day for travel on trains, buses, Sydney Ferries and light rail when it is rolled out,” Ms Berejiklian said. “Let me assure everyone that the Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card is not compulsory, and rest assured that the paper Pensioner Excursion Ticket will continue to be available... well into the future. “We know there are some customers who will want to take their time to learn about Opal before they choose to use it. That is completely understandable and we want people to have that choice.” The Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card is available for NSW Seniors, Pensioner Concession card holders and NSW War Widows. Customers only need to get the Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card once, and the card itself will not cost anything. Minister for Ageing John Ajaka said the

Boarding bookings can be made online on criteria like cleanliness, security and staff training,” Mr Brock said. The partnership will see an estimated $150,000 donated to the National AWL annually. “We really wanted to set the business up to make a difference and help reduce the euthanasia rate in Australia, a rate which seems to spike around peak holiday seasons, “ Mr Brock said. A cornerstone of the program is that by booking your pets’ boarding accommodation through Pet Check-in, you get peace of mind and you are also making a contribution to pets less fortunate than your own. “By booking through our site, pet owners will not only know they are placing their pets in the right boarding care facility, but they are also contributing to the AWL and the animals it supports,” Mr Brock added.

WARNING

Make sure you are prepared for this storm season Assist the SES by having a plan in place this storm season NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

ver the past week the Penrith area has been battered by damaging storms and, with summer fast approaching, locals can certainly expect plenty more to come in the ensuing months. Storms can happen anywhere and at any time of day, so it’s important seniors are prepared for what can happen before, during and after a severe storm. Below lists some important storm advice for local seniors from the NSW State Emergency Service: • Identify your own capabilities and any support or assistance you made need. • Identify and speak with relatives, neighbours or friends that can help provide support during a storm. • Identify a support person. • Prepare a Home Emergency Plan with

O

your support person. A Home Emergency Plan should include contact numbers for your doctor, care provider and support person; evacuation plan; a description of any medical issues or disability; a list of locations for friends, relatives and neighbours that you can go to; and instructions on how to turn off your electricity and gas. • Give your support person a copy of your Home Emergency Plan. • Speak with your care or service provider. • Prepare an emergency kit. The SES also advises you make sure front and backyards are well maintained by securing or putting away any items that could blow around in strong winds. Also, ask a neighbour or family member to help clear gutters, downpipes and drains to prevent blockages as well as trim any trees or branches which could potentially fall on your home or property. If dark clouds are rolling in and you suspect a storm is on its way, switch on the radio or another form of media to listen out for weather warnings and important updates. If for the unfortunate reason you are driving when a severe storm occurs, the SES advises you put your hazard lights on

Severe storms lashed Penrith this week and pull over to the side of the road keeping clear of drains, causeways, streams, creeks, trees and power lines. If you are outdoors, find secure shelter. Following a storm, check your house or

property for damage but do not go sightseeing as this may hinder recovery efforts or put yourself and others at risk. For emergency assistance in storms, call the NSW SES on 132 500.
