A dream that could become reality for the Penrith CBD From pop-up parks to a renewed energy and focus, there’s a strong level of enthusiasm surrounding the Penrith CBD at the moment. Penrith CBD Corporation CEO Gai Hawthorn outlines her hopes and dreams for the hub of Penrith over the next few years... ai Hawthorn has a vision.

We do want to spend time with everyone and this is why we are creating a ‘data membership’ starting in July to ensure we do get to meet and work with as many businesses that are keen to also know

Ms Hawthorn, the CEO of the Penrith CBD Corporation, hopes that one day this vision moves from dream to reality – and she may just get her wish, with the CBD entering a new phase of life with intense focus placed on it from multiple corners including the Penrith Business Alliance and various levels of government.

“We have worked on bringing back the pride to be part of the CBD,” Ms Hawthorn said.

“We have many successful businesses throughout the CBD. We have worked with the smaller businesses that needed a hand.

“Some have had great success increasing their trade by 30 per cent and more. This has been achieved through our continued planning and education programs.”

Working under the mantra of “Activate, Rejuvenate, Populate”, the CBD Corporation has worked closely with key stakeholders to get the area moving again.

“The CBD businesses don’t have the staff or time to work on individual events to bring commercial awareness, so through our regular events, we work with our businesses to achieve levels of awareness, foot traffic and sales into the CBD,” Ms Hawthorn said.

“It’s important to bring that vibe and energy into the CBD regularly to remind our community we do have a great CBD to visit.

“We all know the CBD needs a facelift.

To start the ball rolling towards Penrith City Council’s action plans to revitalise the CBD, we are working with property owners and local businesses to assist with facelifts, be it façade fronts, painting or signage.

“We have also been working with the Penrith Business Enterprise Centre on training and customer service programs, to ensure the businesses’ growth for the future.”

One of Ms Hawthorn’s biggest challenges is reminding local residents who have abandoned the CBD in recent years that things have changed, and will continue to evolve.

“The CBD was the $2 shop strip,” she said.

“Working with the commercial real estates and property owners we are 100 per cent on track to seeing a new era of diverse businesses pop up in the CBD. I

more about the CBD Corporation and what we offer and also open the opportunity for other smaller businesses to connect.”

One of the big changes to the CBD in recent months has been the launch of the pop-up park at the bottom end of High Street. Its implementation has been controversial to say the least but it enjoys the ongoing support of Penrith Council and Ms Hawthorn.

“The pop-up park has had mixed reviews, but the CBD Corporation is keen to give the trial just that, a trial to see if the Penrith community wants the open space to enjoy, have a space to relax in the fresh air for lunch, dinner or perhaps a community event,” she said.

“We have funding and have been working on smaller events for the area includ-

But topping the pop-up park for controversy and complaints is the lack of parking in the Penrith CBD, which is an ongoing concern for locals and obviously drives people to Westfield Penrith instead. “If you look around at the trend of CBDs most don’t have the parking anymore, laneways leading from large multi-deck car parks seem to be popping up everywhere,� Ms Hawthorn said. “I agree that we need more parking, talk to anyone and it’s the same talk, but I would like to see a trend for long-term ‘full time workers’ parking actioned so we have the available parking for our important short term customers during the busy workday. “The answers are not that simple, because investment is needed and it’s millions of dollars.�

The long hours and tireless efforts are worth it for Ms Hawthorn, who believes she’s making headway. “I do believe in Penrith and the people and know that we have already turned the corner and the future is looking positive, we just need to keep that pride going and show investors we are the city to invest in,� she said.

One phone call was all it took to change this fan’s life As the newest member of cover band, the Bootleg Beatles, Steve White had big shoes to fill. But no challenge has been too great, with the McCartney impersonator even learning to play guitar left handed.

here is much to consider when you’re a member of a cover band. Not only do you have to be able to play the band’s music, you also need to get the look and mannerisms of the band down pat.

It’s definitely not an easy gig.

But Steve White, who plays the role of Paul McCartney and is the newest member of the Bootleg Beatles, decided

he would make it even harder for himself.

“I’m a natural right handed guitar player, and we’d do a show and people would come up at the end of the show and say ‘oh we really enjoyed that but it’s such a shame you’re not left handed’,” White said.

“I just thought to myself well it’s really true because we spend all this effort on getting the suits and the boots and the guitars and all the little bits and pieces and the obvious thing being overlooked is the left hand so I thought, ‘I’m just going to have to give it a go and see what happens’.”

And give it a go he did, spending three months and between eight and 10 hours a day practicing the guitar left handed and developing some mean blisters in the process.

“It was quite quick, but it was intense,” White said.

The Bootleg Beatles are arguably the biggest and longest-running Beatles cover band in the world, having played at Glastonbury Festival, Royal Albert Hall and at Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee celebration at Buckingham Palace, as well as appearing on ‘The Graham Norton Show’ in the UK. Though the Bootleg Beatles originated in 1980, White is the newest member, having joined the group at the end of 2011.

He was originally playing in another Beatles cover band before they disbanded and White became a self confessed ‘freelance Paul McCartney’. It was then that he received a phone call that any freelance Beatle would die for.

“I just got a call one day from the Bootleg Beatles saying could you stand in for our guy, which I was absolutely over the moon about, never expected that in a million years,” White said.

“I ended up filling in for him for quite a number of shows and then again after a short period I got another phone call saying it looks like our guy is going to be calling it a day, how do you feel about having the job full time, and well it was like all my Christmases had come at once.

I was absolutely ecstatic.”

It was a dream come true for a fan of the biggest Beatles cover act in the world.

“I’d actually been one of the paying

public, I’d been and paid to see the show a number of times so I knew exactly what they were all about so for me to get that offer, that blew me away really,” White said.

White does admit, however, that his start in music was not quite as successful as his time playing the role of Paul McCartney.

As many musicians can attest to, it’s not easy making a living off original music.

“You’ve got these big ideas but they never really materialise and then after a period of time you lose faith and you know that it’s not really going to happen,” he said.

“And then you want to be in a band that’s just making music and enjoying themselves. So you end up just doing covers because the public can relate to cover songs rather than your own material and it just turns into a really enjoyable experience.”

Penrith audiences can expect to experience a wide variety of work from the Beatles’ back catalogue when the band head to the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers on Friday, May 30 – starting with the lovable suited mop tops all the way through to their later work on Abbey Road.

“We try and cover as much of it as we possibly can and hopefully try and do as many favourite songs,” White said.

The Bootleg Beatles also pride themselves on having extra musicians playing brass and strings, to give audiences the chance to experience the songs that the Beatles never performed on stage.

With a little help, they bring to life songs

such as ‘Penny Lane’, ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and ‘All You Need Is Love’.

“There’s no actual live footage in any way of the Beatles actually performing these songs, so I think the fact we can perform these on stage with the addition of brass and strings is great because it gives the audience the opportunity to see what those songs would have been like had the Beatles performed them live. I think it opens that little void for the public to be able to visualise that and I think that’s nice,” White said.

With a strong following, the Bootleg Beatles draw quite a varied crowd to their shows, reaching a wider audience than what you might expect for a Beatles cover band.

“You would expect them all to be rather silver haired senior citizens being the Beatles, but the incredible thing is we get loads and loads and loads of younger people coming all the time. Back in the UK we just recently finished a March tour and there was one audience member that was four years of age, this little girl and she was actually singing the words to the songs, incredible,” White said.

White clearly loves what he does and is excited to get back to Australia, with this tour being his third trip to our shores.

“I love Australia and I love the Australian people,” White said.

The Bootleg Beatles will be performing at Evan Theatre on Friday, May 30.

Fitting tribute to Australia’s first international star

The show will bring audiences a taste of the story behind one of Australia’s great front men, Stevie Wright, and his band The Easybeats.

As the first Australian band to gain international success, The Easybeats paved the way for Australian rock n’ roll on the world stage, scoring an international hit with ‘Friday On My Mind’ in 1966.

Over two hours long, this stage musical – starring Scot McRae (who is also the Panthers ground announcer) backed by a five piece band – will include hit after hit of iconic Aussie rock n’ roll.

It will also feature real life footage and interviews with those who knew the man best, including a handful of Australia’s most popular identities such as Kevin

Borich, Angry Anderson and Jon English, as well as some of Stevie’s former girlfriends.

Easybeast band mates Harry Vanda and George Young went on to form songwriting duo, Vanda and Young, becoming one of Australia’s most prolific hit making teams.

The rock musical will include hits such as ‘Friday on My Mind’, ‘Evie’ and ‘Good Times’, along with many others. It’s a story of the highs and lows of a life of fame, of the international music industry, love, drugs and most of all rock n’ roll.

The reception for ‘STEVIE’ has been positive with critics praising it as rewarding and a must see experience.

Want a laugh? f you’re in the mood for some laughs head to the Joan on Wednesday, June 4 for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow. There will only be one Sydney stop on this comedy roadtrip and Penrith’s it!

The successful comedy tour has been travelling the country for 15 years, bringing laughter to people everywhere.

The 2013 season saw the roadshow take on 109 shows in over 60 regional cities and towns across the country before performing sell-out shows overseas.

That’s some big shoes to fill, but the 2014 tour appears to be up to the challenge with comedy great, Cal Wilson as MC, along with appearances from Greg Behrendt and Beau Heartbreaker (played by Selina Jenkins).

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow will be on at the Q Theatre, in the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, June 4 at 8pm.

Do you ‘wanna marry Harry’?

So it’s finally a wrap for US sitcom ‘Two and a Half Men’ with CBS confirming the show will end with its 12th season, and it’s about time too. They’ve been flogging this show like a dead horse for years ever since Charlie Sheen was fired. Also leaving the show recently was Angus T. Jones and not to mention Ashton Kutcher has been woeful a woeful replacement. Good riddance.

Also in the US and a fair number of shows have been axed recently ahead of the America’s Fall line-up. Some of these shows include: ‘The Carrie Diaries’, ‘The Tomorrow People’, ‘Community’, ‘The Michael J Fox Show’, ‘The X Factor’, ‘Rake’, ‘Raising Hope’, ‘Hostages’, ‘Intelligence’, ‘Super Fun Night’, ‘Revolution’, ‘Suburbagatory’ as well as many others.

Another show not going ahead after all is ‘How I Met Your Dad’, the spin-off to ‘How I Met Your Mother’. Apparently things on the pilot episode didn’t work out as planned and CBS has dumped the idea.

Probably for the best as these spin-off shows never work.

Channel Ten is airing an ‘interesting’ new dating show soon titled ‘I Wanna Marry Harry’. The cheeky reality show enlists Englishman Matthew Hicks to convince 12 blissfully ignorant women that he is Prince Harry. This could be so dumb it could work.

GO! will be airing a new local series titled ‘ManSpace’ soon that will sure excite local men. The team headed by actor Shane Jacobson will travel the country to find Australia’s most impressive man caves and collectors. The show also addresses men’s issues and special interests.

Crazy rumours were circling last week that Channel Ten could be ending its ‘Wake Up’ breakfast program and replacing it with a ‘Good Morning Australia’ reboot with Kerrie-Anne Kennerley and Matt White.

Channel Ten have denied all reports but I say, where there’s smoke there’s fire.

Theodore’s life changes when he meets Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an advanced operating system that is designed to be highly advanced and individualised to each users. As Samantha’s emotional response develops, so does their relationship.

While it sounds like a far-fetched premise, Oscar-winning filmmaker Spike Jones does a beautiful job of exploring the extremes of love in the modern, technologically advanced world. After all we are already living in a digital age where much of our socialising happens online.

‘Her’ has received much praise from audiences and critics with a current rating of 94 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for Picture of the Year.

The newest release in the ‘X-Men’ series sees characters from the original trilogy teaming up with their younger selves from ‘X-Men: First Class’, over two time periods, to fight to change the past, ensuring they save the future.

X-Men fans will be in heaven when characters such as Magneto, Mystique and Charles Xavier from the past meet X-Men from the future including Wolverine, Storm and Professor X. ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is absolutely jam packed with stars including Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.

Founding director Brian Singer is back in the driver’s seat and so far the reception for the action blockbuster has been positive.

Even for those who haven’t followed the movie franchise there is still much to enjoy, but it is recommended that you catch up on the previous films!

There is no doubt fans will be lining up to see ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. When all is said and done there is only one word to describe this film: epic!

The symphonic metal band Epica is back with their latest offering, ‘The Quantum Enigma’. Gaining a loyal following since forming in 2002, this is the band’s sixth full length studio album.

For this release they decided to break with tradition and work with a new producer, Joost van den Broek, at Sandlane Recording Facilities in the Netherlands. What they created is one of their strongest albums to date.

Frontwoman Simone Simmons has one of those impossibly perfect voices and is at her best when she brings her operatic vocals into play, providing a stunning contrast to the instrumental force that backs her.

Their music is heavy in the best sense of the word; it’s brutal and intense, while also being intricate and beautiful. Epica clearly have the formula down pat. The symphonic elements bring an otherworldly feel, which gives the genre its distinct sound within the world of metal.

Their previous album, ‘Requiem for the Indifferent’ did well internationally and debuted at 104 on the US Billboards.

This is a solid album for Epica, offering fans everything they love about the band and symphonic metal in general.

im Adams has been producing an absolutely marvellous Clare Valley Shiraz under his Aberfeldy label since 1989. And it seems fitting that his latest release – the 2010 – is both what he considers “his best Aberfeldy to date” and also his 21st vintage of the wine.

2010 was a spectacular vintage throughout the Clare Valley, and while a stand-out for red wines generally across south-eastern Australia, it was Shiraz in the Valley that had everyone talking.

Tim took advantage of this great vintage to use the most outstanding parcels of fruit from old, premium dry grown vines for his Aberfeldy Shiraz, and threw his all into crafting a wine that many experts and buffs are already saying has potential for anything up to 20 years in bottle.

70’s theme had Penrith partying OZWAC CHARITY BALL

he annual OZWAC Charity Ball was held in Penrith last weekend and was a huge success, with tens of thousands of dollars raised for this important local organisation, which funds research into medical conditions that affect women and children.

Channel Seven news presenter Mark Ferguson and television star Tara Dennis hosted the event, which had a 70’s theme. Most of the 200-strong crowd got into the party spirit by dressing up in a 70’s costume – including OZWAC Chairman Simon Gould who made an appearance as Austin Powers.

A live auction, performances by local dancers and a DJ helped ensure the night was a major success. Now the count down beings for next year’s Ball!

amily Guy has never been one to shy away from crude, no holds barred humour.

It’s controversial and bizarre but fans wouldn’t have it any other way, tuning in each week to find out what weird adventures are in store for the hilariously odd family, the Griffins. Now fans of the series can own Season 13 on DVD. The show follows the Griffins, who live in the fictional town of Quahog, Rhode Island.

The family is headed by the endearingly ignorant father, Peter Griffin, along with his wife Lois, and their kids, Chris (Seth Green) and Meg (Mila Kunis), baby Stewie and the talking dog, Brian.

Creator Seth MacFarlane, who voices many of the characters including Peter, Brian and Stewie, is the co-creator of the hit shows ‘American Dad’ and ‘The Cleveland Show’.

MacFarlane also wrote, directed, produced and voiced the main character in the recent comedy flick ‘Ted’, starring Mark Wahlberg.

‘Family Guy’ started off as two shorts entitled ‘The Life of Larry’ and ‘Larry and Steve’ whilst MacFarlane was studying animation at the Rhode Island School of Design They were picked up by Fox and three series were made before the show was axed.

From snail mail to mail rail From 1927 until 2003 London’s “secret tube” delivered millions of letters and parcels. Now it will deliver tourists.

t may be six years away, but train buffs are already beside themselves as they await the just-announced opportunity to ride part of a “secret section” of London’s vast subterranean rail system – one that operated for 22 hours a day, seven days a week, yet in its 76-year lifetime never carried a single passenger.

And while originally comprising some 10.5km of tracks in tunnels that in places ran almost parallel with those of London’s famed Tube, it’s going to take all those six years to re-open just 1km of track and to totally refurbish an original station and control room.

Literally a ghost-train, this line employed hundreds of people between 1927 and 2003. It was built by the British Post Office to carry mail under London’s CBD on driver-less trains that ran on narrow tracks just 610mm wide, and inside tunnels a mere 2.7m in diameter.

Dubbed the “Secret Tube” and “Mail Rail,” at its peak it had eight subterranean stations that included two huge mail sorting centres, and a fleet of remotecontrolled mini electric locomotives that

could reach an amazing speed of 64km/h as they hauled 4 billion letters, packages and parcels a year.

Work on the mail rail started in 1915 with the line being laid in pre-formed iron “rings” that were lowered down vast vertical shafts and riveted together in tunnels dug through the clay soil.

But with WWI, labour and materials shortages, work was soon suspended – and with the fear of German Zeppelin air-raids, the already-built tunnels were used as safe-keeping for the treasures of the British Museum.

Construction resumed on the line in 1924 and the London Post Office Railway finally opened in time for the delivery of Christmas parcels in December 1927.

But in 2003 the Post Office deemed Mail Rail to be uneconomic, closing and mothballing it on May 31 of that year.

Now London’s Islington Council has approved the restoration of a short section of the Mail Rail known as Mount Pleasant Station. The British Postal Museum and Archive that’s behind the tourist train venture, is having original mail wagons refurbished and fitted with seats and will record a short history of the rail line.

The Mail Rail tourist attraction is set to open in 2020.

I began asking every person that I met with during that week the same question: What do you think of my nails? And the majority response was heart breaking.

Of all the people I asked, I had two tell me they looked cool and I even had one friend compliment my nails before I had asked her opinion, but the positive feedback stopped there.

I was then faced with the terrifying decision: do I continue with my white nails because I like them personally or do I lose the look forever because of what the majority of people see?

I came to the conclusion that if I rock my white polished nails like it’s normal, there is a good chance people will just accept them as that, normal.

There is no point changing something I love because of what others think.

On that note: I have had many painful experiences with nail polish removers.

But I recently discovered a product that all nail polish wearers should try: Maybelline Express Remover. The title is pretty self explanatory... give it a go and thank me later.

White nail polish can look like liquid paper if you don’t apply it properly

Fashion and beauty trends change and evolve all the time – it’s just a fact of life I have come to accept. And given that all people are different, every person won’t love every trend.

Sure, there can be trends that the majority love and try but there will always be a portion of people who aren’t so keen.

As someone who is wary of trying new trends, although still keen to give it a go, trying something new can be a point of stress.

I have had plenty of experience with testing new trends only to discover they don’t quite work for me, which is fine because when I am not keen myself, it is easy to let go.

But what I absolutely hate is when I try a new trend and love it, but not everyone else does.

I rarely have naked finger nails, in fact I don’t actually remember the last time I went out without ensuring my nails were polished – even if they were sporting some chips. Painting my nails is a way for me to change-up my seemingly boring wardrobe of black, white and greys.

I recently got my hands on a bottle of white nail polish from Australis and for the past month or so I have been wearing it so often that it has become one of the few colours to make it to my high-rotation nail polish list. I can (and do) wear it with anything and it has a great, crisp look that I love.

White is the nail colour of the season but apparently it isn’t loved by everyone, so one of my family members pointed out when they said it, “looks like you are wearing Liquid Paper on your nails”.

Why didn’t I notice this before?

Through high school there were many a day where I would busy myself (mostly when I was supposed to be getting work done) with colouring my nails in with Liquid Paper – who didn’t?

It was probably really bad for my nails. I can even smell the chemicals as I think about it, but I didn’t care at the time as I was enjoying wearing coloured nails in a polish-free school – my one act of rebellion.

After I was told my perfectly polished nails looked like a dodgy liquid paper job, I had to find out if it was just that one person or

Today’s South Sea Pearls are as close to natural as can be.

Long ago they were considered to be a miracle of nature, found sporadically. Now due to popular demand a culturing process has been developed to ensure that this beautiful, organic gem continues to thrive.

White South Sea Pearls are mainly farmed along the north west coast of Western Australia while Tahitian waters produce black pearls. The culturing process still involves live oysters on the ocean floor, very similar to the way nature intended.

A South Sea Pearl is formed when a small nucleus – generally made from mother of pearl – is inserted into the animal and a natural reaction takes place. The oyster recognises the nucleus as a foreign body and begins to coat it in nacre as a form of defence. This nacre builds up layer by layer and begins to form the pearl itself. Most pearls can spend approximately two years being created deep down in the ocean. They are then harvested by divers, cleaned, sorted and made into stunning pieces of jewellery.

South Sea Pearls are graded based on their shine, surface, shade, shape and size. Shine is often called lustre and put simply means the amount of light reflected off the surface of the pearl. Another way to think of it is alike a mirror finish – the higher the shine the more you will be able to see your face in the pearl!

The surface of a pearl can be subject to blemishes, nature’s fingerprints. Shade is another term for colour – ranging from white, to gold to black. Each shape can then have additional hues, meaning that the variety of colour is endless. Shape can vary greatly from pearl to pearl which is why a perfectly round strand of pearls has such a high value.

Popular shapes for strands also include baroque (irregular and free form) and for earrings drop (tear drop) and button (slightly flat round) shapes always work well. Be sure to care correctly for your pearls. They are a natural gem and require a little more attention than other gems.

1. This is going to seem pretty obvious, but it’s as simple as “get moving”, you don’t need to flog yourself to start seeing the benefits of becoming more active.

2. Sleep. It’s oh so very underrated, but vital in allowing the body to recover and regenerate, it also allows our minds to rest and hopefully de-stress us a little.

3. Eat. Make sure your diet is varied and full of fresh produce. Food is fuel and allows our bodies to function. Also make sure you drink plenty of water.

A daily ‘must do’?

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy?

Increased energy levels and general wellbeing, it’s amazing what “feeling” fit and healthy can do for your head space.

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most?

Currently I’m loving weight training, with my focus on compound lifts for maximum benefits and results.

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’?

I think about how far I’ve come, all the hard work that’s been put in, the goals that have been reached and the goals that are still to be reached – no one can do it for you!

Stretch! Your joints and muscles will thank you for it and you’ll find you have better mobility throughout the body, just five minutes a day will be enough to loosen you up.

I offer one-on-one, pair and group training.

How does fitness feature in your life?

I have my wife to thank for where I am today! She started doing some outdoor bootcamps about five years ago and eventually convinced me to have a go. I was active in my job as a painter and decorator and didn’t think I was too unfit! Wrong!

So I started bootcamp and my competitive side took over, soon I had entered my first marathon, half marathon and City to Surf.

From there we decided the fitness industry was something that could really work for us.

I get great satisfaction from seeing people reaching their goals and love to motivate and provide the tools to enable people to get to where they want to be. I’m currently in training for my first Power Lifting competition in September, it’s great motivation to have something to work towards.

‘Good food’, ‘healthy diet’, ‘clean eating’. What do they all mean? As a personal trainer this is the most asked question I’ve come across.

It’s not too difficult to teach a client a new movement or a new skill, but to re-educate nutrition is incredibly challenging. There is so much confusion about various diets. Which one is the right one?

There are professionals who will tell you each is correct.

Doctors for the last 40 years have been preaching ‘low fat, high grain’ and then the new age professionals are advocating the opposite. “You must convert to a diet rich in good fats and low in sugary carbs,” write bloggers, nutritionists and fitness experts all on the bandwagon. The problem is who to trust.

Where is the information coming from and why are they pushing their opinions? Only one answer makes sense to me.

What were our ancestors eating back in the day when heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes and high blood pressure were not a part of our everyday vocabulary? Back before the time of such things as the Agricultural Revolution (1700s), before the use of pasteurisation (1871), refrigeration (1895), or genetically modified crops (2000). And well before current mass commercialised farming practices.

Our ancestors were eating whatever was available to them.

What they caught when they went hunting, what grew in well-nourished soil and what was in season. They drank from clean waters, any meat, milk or eggs were from healthy, wild animals. This was their perfect diet.

There are many people that will argue that we live a longer life now then our ancestors ever did and this may be true due to the advances of modern medicine; but are we living a longer, ‘healthier’ life? Is our quality of life better? Or are we just kept alive but unwell for a longer time? Are they treating the cause of our diseases or just the symptoms?

Children and dogs can live in harmony

Do you have irritable bowel syndrome?

Having children and dogs together can be a great experience.

Most dogs end up bonding strongly with children in the family and the love between a child and a dog can be a wonderful thing.

However, many people assume that dogs should be willing to tolerate absolutely anything a child does. Some parents will allow their children to chase, poke, pull tails and annoy the family pet!

While some dogs can tolerate this, this puts the child in immense risk if the dog decides it has finally had enough.

Over the next few weeks we will discuss how to aim for a household where pets and children live in harmony. We will discuss preparing puppies for children, preparing your adult dog for children and the changes the dog may face as children grow up!

The best way to avoid a potentially dangerous situation is to supervise all interactions between your dog and your kids. Even if your dog is friendly and gentle, remember that it only takes a few seconds for a child to accidently hurt a dog and for the dog to react. If you supervise diligently, you can step in when necessary to avoid bad experiences for both your dog and your children.

What signs are you looking for as a parent? If a dog shows their teeth or growls at a child, obviously they are feeling overwhelmed and reacting. But, there are subtle signs that you can pick up before such dramatic behaviours occur. It is much safer to learn and recognise early warning signs that a dog is feeling uncomfortable, overwhelmed or uncomfortable.

The first signs that a dog is getting uncomfortable is often a ‘freeze’ or a hard stare. Some dogs will simply run away and some dogs will also prick their ears back when they are feeling anxious. If these signs fail to deter the action that is making the dog uncomfortable, the signs may escalate to snarling, growling and biting.

If you aren’t able to supervise the interaction between your dog and children, it is best to confine the dog in a safe area away from the kids. If you teach your dog to be comfortable in a crate, you can easily put them away when necessary. A crate also provides a safe place for your dog to sleep and eat without worrying about children bothering them – it needs to be a ‘safe place’.

If you are constantly suffering from abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhoea and constipation or feeling full and bloated, you may have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

IBS is a very common gastrointestinal disorder that seems to be related to an overly sensitive digestive tract.

The disorder can be very frustrating for sufferers as it is often difficult to treat and control. However, changes to diet and lifestyle, along with some supplements can help IBS symptoms.

There are many things that can trigger IBS symptoms including things like stress, certain foods and drinks and also medications.

If you are a sufferer of IBS you probably already know some of your triggers and do your utmost to avoid them. It is worth getting a diary for a week and keeping track of your food and drink choices, your emotions and how these affect your symptoms. Often having a record on paper makes it easier to clearly see any patterns that are triggering your IBS. A great breakthrough for IBS is the awareness of foods that irritate the bowel. They have been categorised as FODMAPs. This stands for Fermentable, Oligo-saccharides, Di-saccharides, Mono-saccharides and Polyols.

For the practical application of this term, visit the website www.ibsdiet.org and look at the ‘FODMAP Food List’ under the ‘FODMAP Diet’ tab.

This not only lists foods that may contribute to IBS but also foods that are a low risk of causing irritation.

The makers of Inner Health Plus have produced a little brochure called the “The IBS Diet”. This is a wonderful walletsized summary of the foods to limit in your diet and what you can eat. Come into Martin’s chemist, St Marys to get a copy.

Some quick tips to manage IBS are to reduce your caffeine intake, reduce alcohol and drink more water and do moderate exercise.

Are you on a collision course in life?

There is a story about a captain of a large naval ship who, when standing on the bridge of his ship, saw a light ahead on a collision course. The captain signalled, “Alter your course 10 degrees south.” The reply came back, “Alter YOUR course 10 degrees north.” The captain then signalled, “Alter your course 10 degrees south. I am a captain!” The reply: “Alter YOUR course 10 degrees north. I am a seaman third class.”

The captain was furious! He signalled, “Alter your course 10 degrees south. I am a battleship!” The reply? “Alter YOUR course 10 degrees north. I am a LIGHTHOUSE!” Sometimes people, like the ship’s captain, think they know best; thinking they are the authority in life, they sometimes reject the real, true authority.

The Bible tells us that Jesus is the real, true authority. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. In the book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul tells us how, “God exalted him (Jesus) to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.”

Will you accept this authority or will you reject it? Like the ship’s captain, it is good to submit to the person who knows you best – the real, true authority. What a great thing to willingly submit your life to Jesus, the Lord – the one who’s showed compassion, who offers forgiveness, direction and meaning in life and who is the real, true authority of this world.

The band is fronted by Gillian Reynolds, aka Annie, who plays a mean harmonica and has a gutsy voice that works perfectly with the band’s blues, rock and country sensibilities. She also provides a theatrical element to the performance that keeps audiences engaged from the get go.

GENERAL HAND MMT 2 POSITIONS Grade 2 An opportunity for career change now exists to work within our three main parks Castlebrook Memorial Park, Pinegrove Memorial Park and Forest Lawn Memorial Park. You will be based at Pinegrove, but the position requires for you to travel to and from all three location on a monthly basis. You will work in a group of four with all equipment provided.

The successful candidates will have the following skills and experience: • The ability to perform a wide variety of manual labour tasks, indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.

• The physical strength to perform heavy lifting, landscaping and general maintenance duties for extended periods of time.

• An ability to take instructions from supervisors and perform duties to set standards and procedures.

Desirable: • Experience working with volunteers and community groups.

• Understanding of the Community Care Standards

• An ability to use tools, machinery and equipment and where appropriate be licensed to do so (or be capable to become licensed).

Wages: • SCHADS Level 4 – 1 to 4 Point (Salary Sacrifice may be available)

• An ability to be customer-focused, have sensitivity to grieving people and to communicate effectively with the public.

Hours: • P/Part-time – 18 hrs/p/wk Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays.

• A capacity to be at ease working in a cemetery and crematorium environment.

• A willingness to work co-operatively as part of a team which takes pride in its workmanship and contribution to customer service.
