COVER STORY

Justice Crew cause plenty of hype with their new tour Fellow talent show graduate, Jai Waetford is in for a really fun, life-changing time, according to Samson Smith from Justice Crew, who are taking the 15-year-old with them on their new tour around Australia

fter winning over the nation on TV show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, dance group Justice Crew is teaming up with fellow reality TV star Jai Waetford for their new tour.

The seven member band will have Waetford as their special guest on their national #HYPETOUR next month, playing at The Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on Tuesday, April 22. With both Justice Crew and Waetford having proven their ability to entertain huge crowds, the tour is set to be a thrilling night that will get fans involved in the fun. “The tour’s going to be crazy, there’s going to be no down moments. There will be some crowd interaction – we’re going to bring some fans up on stage, have a little dance off, it’s going to be huge,” said Justice Crew member Samson Smith. While the two acts might seem an unlikely pairing coming from competing talent shows, they joined forces for the tour after Justice Crew watched 15-yearold Waetford’s amazing journey on the fifth series of ‘The X Factor’ and decided to get in touch. “We wanted to meet him and once we met him we were like ‘who should we bring up to be our support act and we thought Jai would be perfect, he’s got a great following, he’s real interactive with his fans, which is good,” Smith said. Justice Crew, who won the fourth season of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, is made up of seven performers: Samson Smith, Emmanuel ‘E-Man’ Rodriguez, Lukas Bellesini, Solo Tohi, Len Pearce, John Pearce and Paul Merciadez. The band initially had two more members, who left to pursue solo interests in 2011, but despite the split there were no hard feelings. “We supported whatever they’ve done because you can tell when people’s mindset is not there… we don’t want to stop them chasing their dreams so we just gave them the opportunity. It was a good feeling, it wasn’t a bad vibe,” Smith said. Travelling across Australia in such a large group of musicians will naturally result in some disagreements among Justice Crew, but Smith said that the band get along well and would have a positive influence on the young Waetford. “Everyone’s got different opinions but in the end it all works out well. At the end of the tour, Jai’s going to be a different person, in a good way… we’re going to have to be good role models for him,” he said. Since being crowned the winners on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ in 2010, Justice

Crew have gone on to achieve huge success with their fusion of pop and hip hop. Their 2013 pop song ‘Everybody’ achieved double platinum sales and hit the Top 10 on the ARIA Singles Chart, while their song ‘Boom Boom’ was a number one ARIA single. Despite their obvious connection with Australian music lovers, Justice Crew had no idea they would ever become so popular or even get through to the final round on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’. “We were nervous because it was our first TV show, we ended up going on the show just to put us on a platform where people can hire us for gigs, we didn’t even think we would ever make it to the semi finals, we just wanted to audition,” Smith said. “Once we got through that, we were like ‘this is serious, let’s actually think about trying to win it’.” Before reaching stardom on television, Justice Crew had humble beginnings as two separate dance crews who met while competing against each other in hip hop competitions. Impressively, most of the dancers in Justice Crew learned their moves from studying videos online rather than spending hours with professional teachers in expensive studios. “The majority of us were all self-taught… YouTube was a big one, you just get

inspired from a lot of dancers all over the world, that motivates us and gives us ideas,” Smith said. This modest, self-taught background means that Justice Crew are in an ideal position to inspire younger hip hop fans in the community who want to pursue their love of performing, and the group takes that role seriously. “It’s perfect, ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ put us on a platform where people can hear our stories and they can relate to us. Before the show we used to go to communities and put on free classes for kids that couldn’t afford classes so they related to us,” Smith said. With so many teenage fans looking up to them, Smith said that Justice Crew likes to be living proof of the power of chasing dreams. “We always go by the two words, which are ‘dream big’ and I know it’s a bit cliché but if you think about it and put your mind to reach your goals and dreams, you’ll get there,” he said. “And that’s what each seven of us have done – just dream big, don’t let any negatives get in the way… stay around positive people.” Justice Crew will bring their #HYPETOUR to the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on Tuesday, April 22 at 7.30pm. Tickets start at $59. For bookings or more information, visit www.ticketek.com.au.

ew Zealand born singer Lorde may only be 17-years-old but she’s already an international superstar. She will be visiting Australia for a string of tour dates over the next two months, with a performance at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on Friday, May 2. Chambers will be joined on stage for the concert by fellow country stars Busby Marou and exciting newcomers to the Australian music scene Harry Hookey and Ashleigh Dallas. The Foggy Mountain Jam originally started out as a small, boutique concert where artists and performers ‘jammed’ together in front of an intimate crowd of lucky fans on a private property in the Hunter Valley. From these humble beginnings, the concert series has now blossomed into a full scale extravaganza. The Foggy Mountain Jam will be held at Rooty Hill RSL on Sunday, March 30 at 4.30pm. It’s time to play ball at the SCG Could Channel Ten’s ‘The Project’ finally be on its way out? Who knows? But two pioneer hosts exiting over the past few months doesn’t seem right. After Dave Hughes bowed out recently, it was Charlie Pickering’s turn last week who announced he was quitting the ‘news’ show after five years to have a family. Pickering’s final show will be on April 7.

A comedy that everyone seems to be loving at the moment is ‘The Big Bang Theory’, and fans will be happy with the news that the show has been renewed by CBS in America for a further three seasons. This means we’re all going to see ‘Big Bang’ at least until 2016/17 where it will hit 10 seasons. Only a handful of sitcoms have made it to 10 seasons including ‘Frasier’.

With the recent changes by Channel Ten to ‘So You Think You Can Dance’, Sherlock Holmes show ‘Elementary’ will finally return to our screens from this Sunday at 8.30pm. Season two begins with Holmes risking his future with the NYPD.

Fans of the hit A&E show ‘Pawn Stars’ were left in tears last week after Twitter went into meltdown with the news one of the show biggest personalities, Chum Lee, had died of a heart attack. Thankfully, it was just one of those crazy celebrity death hoaxes.

It’s currently a closely guarded secret but it’s understood Channel Nine are poised to announce a Ned Kelly mini-series about the infamous Australian bushranger based on a book written by Peter FitzSimons. The eight-part series will be produced by the makers of ‘Love Child’.

GEM will screen the historic Major League Baseball clashes between the LA Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks from the SCG. The telecast will begin at 7pm this Saturday and at 1pm on Sunday. Cricketer Ian Chappell joins the American commentary team to call both games.

POMPEII RATED M Starring: Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Carrie-Anne Moss & Kiefer Sutherland

KYLIE MINOGUE KISS ME ONCE Out Now

This historical adventure film takes viewers back to Ancient Rome in the lead up to the disastrous volcanic eruption at Pompeii. The movie focuses on the young and talented gladiator Milo, who is shown in a flashback being captured as a slave in Britannia almost two decades earlier. All grown up, Milo captures the attention of Roman society when he becomes a talented gladiator, and is transferred to the district of Pompeii. There, he gets involved in the upper echelons of Pompeian society, falling in love with Cassia, the daughter of the town’s leader, who has other wealthy suitors. Against this backdrop, Mount Vesuvius is about to erupt and obliterate the citizens of Pompeii, with the clock ticking for the people to escape. While the script was based on historical records such as the writings of Pliny the Younger, ‘Pompeii’ isn’t an entirely accurate depiction of the events it portrays, so history buffs might be disappointed. The critical reaction so far has been mixed, with some reviewers slamming ‘Pompeii’ for its lack of pace early on although the action picks up towards the end of the film.

Kylie Minogue has been a dominant icon in music all over the world for almost 30 years now and continues to surprise everyone with her ability to churn out hits time after time. She returns to the charts this week with her first album since signing to Roc Nation Management. Kylie wrote the album throughout 2013 and spent most of that time producing with artists in the United States and United Kingdom. The sensational Pharrell worked with Kylie on the album, writing and producing, ‘I Was Gonna Cancel’. Other producers that contributed to the album have worked with artists such as P!NK, Katy Perry and Rudimental. ‘Into the Blue’ is the first single of the album and Kylie is excited to share her new music. The album has 11 tracks and a deluxe album containing an extra two songs for fans!

WINE

A trip down south is rather fruitful DAVID ELLIS

he Southern Highlands in NSW is considered one of Australia’s newest wine regions, yet the first wine grapes were in fact grown there by surgeon, explorer and settler Dr Charles Throsby at his property, Throsby Park in Moss Vale way back in the 1820s. His vines were most likely for making small quantities of fortifieds that were popular at the time. But it took another 160 years before the region was recognised for its potential for producing exceptional cool climate wines, with a couple of vineyards planted in the 1980s and more throughout the 1990s. Today there are 60 vineyards across the Southern Highlands and some 15 cellar doors at which to enjoy their product. One really worthy of a visit on a trip down that way – and it’s just over 100km south of Sydney – is Diamond Creek Estate that planted 7ha of vines at Mittagong in 1997. Today the vines are hand-picked and its wines are made under contract by local wineries. Particularly rewarding is their 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon that has wonderfully intense blackcurrant and cassis on the palate, as well as a hint of mint. Surprisingly its just $22 a bottle at the cellar door or $264 a dozen plus freight. See www. diamondcreekestate.com.au. One to note: Western Australia’s Margaret River produces stand-out Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, and Voyager Estate’s 2013 is a sophisticated, yet easy drinking example of this popular blend. Try it!

Tracks such as ‘Walk Right In’, ‘Sexy Eyes’, ‘When You’re In Love With a Beau-

tiful Woman’ and ‘Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk’ became hits for the band, with many Dr Hook songs making it into the Top 10 all over the world. After a long, successful career as a member of the band, Locorriere parted ways with Dr Hook with a farewell tour towards the end of the 1980’s but still continued to pursue music and had a flourishing solo career. He has released three albums that received strong critical reviews, and also performed at prestigious international venues including the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow and the Liverpool Philharmonic. Locorriere has also been an influential figure within the music industry, and big names have recorded and performed his songs, including artists Bob Dylan, Olivia Newton-John and Helen Reddy. His Australian tour ‘Dr Hook and Beyond’ will see Locorriere travel through his own music history from his early band days to his current solo glory. SPECIAL REPORT

Sound of silence is a reality for those with a rare disorder Our first words spoken as children hold such value, yet we quickly forget how important our voices are. Not so for Louise Bale though, who values her voice more than ever before. KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

Friday 21 March 2014 the western weekender • west life

W

hen Louise Bale lost her voice, she lost her old life – the one where she was a self confessed “chatterbox”, where she was able to pick up a telephone and answer it with a ‘hello’, where she could order a cappuccino over the counter without having to write her order on a napkin. In her 40’s – the prime of her life – Ms Bale did not think twice about her voice, how much she was using it and how valuable it was to her. Simple tasks like ordering takeaway and using a car park intercom were just that, simple. At a time in life when it seemed like everything was going right, the unexpected happened – Ms Bale’s voice failed her.

It began to let her down slowly, fading in and out. She describes it as a similar sensation to the one you get when talking to someone on a mobile phone with poor reception – cutting out randomly. Speaking became increasingly tiring as it took more and more effort to get each word out, resulting in her voice becoming incredibly soft. The muscles supporting her larynx, otherwise known as the voice box, had begun to work inefficiently, causing her voice to fail; a neurological condition called Spasmodic Dysphonia. The condition’s symptoms can be improved with certain treatments but never reversed, as there is no current cure. Now 55-years-old, it has been eight years since Ms Bale’s diagnosis and if given the opportunity, she would “absolutely” take her voice and her old life back, but at this stage it will never happen. “Losing my voice meant that life changed dramatically for me. I have always been a chatterbox, with plenty to say – I am a very social being,” she said.

Corresponding with West Life via email, as a phone call would be near impossible with her voice disorder, Ms Bale’s natural social skills were glaringly obvious, and that’s something difficult to translate through writing. “It’s lucky I like to write,” she joked. She relies on text messaging, emails and face to face meetings, providing they take place in a very quiet location, to communicate. But with only a whisper for a voice, social interaction in both her home life and her work life – where she has built a career in health promotion – is difficult and has taken its toll. “I’ve had some funny (and not so funny) experiences where I have been locked in car parks and buildings where there was an intercom and I needed to get out but I couldn’t be heard,” she said. “Over the years I have found myself withdrawing from situations that I would normally love, and have become very selective about how and with whom I spend my time.”

It’s easy to feel invisible in a noisy environment – it gets me down at times but I am resilient

15

The Penrith International School of Music are keen supporters of World Voice Day value of communication through voice and its often overlooked importance in life, is the one lesson that has made the biggest impact on Ms Bale and is the one she wants people to remember. It is because of this that she became involved with World Voice Day, an annual celebration of the human voice. “It brings us a multitude of great things, like entertainment, education, communication and the ability to express our

emotions,” she said. “For me, World Voice Day is really about getting people to stop for a minute and think about it. We all take it for granted that when we have something to say, we just open our mouth and it happens.” The initiative began in Brazil in 1999 and has snowballed to an event that is celebrated internationally on April 16. This year, the annual initiative is being supported by Penrith City Council, with

the help of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre, Penrith International School of Music, Sydney Voice and Swallowing clinic as well as the Australian Voice Association. An inaugural concert called ‘Voices in the Valley’ will be held at the Joan Sutherland Centre on Friday, April 11, from 6.30pm, showcasing the “beauty and uniqueness” of the human voice – a reminder of what can so easily be lost.

“It’s easy to feel invisible in a noisy environment – it gets me down at times, however I am a fairly resilient person and refuse to be beaten, so I can usually bounce back.” Adding to the “invisible” feeling is the judgement she receives from people in the public, the majority of us in fact, that don’t understand voice disorders. “Often if you have an unusual voice people think you are uneducated. I have been thought of as having an intellectual impairment and asked more than once if I am deaf,” she said. “It has shown me a lot about being ‘different’. I have worked in health and welfare for years and I have always been an advocate for people who are on the margins of our society. I think this has given me an even better understanding of how they can be made to feel because they don’t quite ‘fit the mould’.” This is just one of the lessons Ms Bale’s journey with Spasmodic Dysphonia has taught her – her voice may be gone but without it she has developed new understandings and a new view of life. “We are a loud and impatient society where people often don’t take the time to really ‘listen’. If you can’t be loud enough to be heard, and jump in to say your piece then your opinion is often overlooked,” she said. Because of this, she now makes a conscious effort to be the listener in a conversation, to take in what she is being told. To Ms Bale, her situation is a real life case of ‘you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone’, and certainly, we all take our voices for granted. Among the things she has learnt, the

collection of footwear. Now, they didn’t look a lot like slippers from the outside but anyone who had walked through K-Mart’s slipper section would have known I was wearing my at-home shoes out of the home – oh the shame! Here comes the part where I get down on my knees and beg the fashion industry to change the rules; let me wear my slippers outside, and let it be okay! Please, I beg you! Looking at the range of ugg boots on the market, I know that someone has the same idea as me – seriously, they make stiletto “uggies”, so why hasn’t there already been some kind of revolution? I’m going to go ahead and in the name of all those who suffer from cold toes, declare that wearing ugg boots to the shops is okay. If you don’t want to be caught out in ugg boots that look like slippers just like the ones pictured here, you can always go for a pair that have a firm sole or even laces so that they look more like a casual shoe than a slipper. Avoid wearing baggy pants with your boots as that will emphasise the pyjama look; instead, tuck in some trendy boyleg jeans to your ugg boots to make them look a little more dressed up.

katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

Snug ugg boots should be acceptable attire for a casual visit to the shops

One thing that I really, really hate about winter is cold feet. When I have cold feet, I feel like my entire body is immersed in an icy pool and it takes forever to warm me up. I sit at my desk with a heater at my feet, I have extra blankets down the end of my bed, I often wear two pairs of socks at one time and as soon as I step in the door, I am straight in front of the wood heater to thaw out my toes. It is because of my loathing for cold feet that I found my love of ugg boots, slippers and other toe warming footwear – I could wear them 24/7... if it was acceptable. There are many of us out there, myself included, that scowl at people who wear their ugg boots and slippers shopping, to a family lunch or anywhere really, because they are seen in the same category as pyjamas: things you wear at home and only at home. I always have a little giggle when I see someone wearing their ugg boots outdoors but I really shouldn’t because I have been sitting on a dirty little secret all year. This time last year I was wandering through the local K-Mart at the beginning of autumn, when the nights were just beginning to cool down – kind of like now. I was browsing the slipper section when I came across a pair of brown loafer-style slippers, with proper soles and lined with deliciously soft fluff. At less that $20 I had them off the shelf with the blink of an eye and half an hour later was wearing them around the home. One particularly cold winter’s day I was desperately in need of a pair of brown shoes to match the outfit I had picked out for a trip to the shops and I had nothing... except for the pair of brown, loafer-style slippers. Already running late, I slipped them on and headed out the door. My feet had never had such a wonderful, comfortable, snug day and neither had I. That was not the last time that I wore that particular pair of slippers out, in fact, they became a regular addition to my daily

Is the clarity of a diamond important? This week in our series of diamond buying lessons we discuss the second of the ‘ Four C’s’ – clarity. The immense pressure that is needed to create a diamond deep down in the earth can often leave behind small internal and external characteristics known as inclusions. Clarity grading will depend on what type of inclusions the stone may have, where they are placed and how visible they are under 10x magnification. Think of an inclusion as a natural birthmark within your diamond, the same kind of unique identification as fingerprints on a human. No two diamonds are ever the same and most diamonds have inclusions to some degree, unless their clarity grading is F – Flawless or IF – Internally Flawless. Diamonds graded VVS1 and VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included) exhibit very minimal inclusions. Very Slightly Included diamonds (VS1 and VS2) can best be described as having inclusions that are minor and range from difficult to somewhat easy for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification. These along with SI1 (Slightly Included) diamonds are generally the most popular clarity that we are asked for once we have educated our clients at York Jewellers during the buying process. While a diamond’s clarity grading has an impact on the overall value of the stone the chance of actually seeing anything with the naked eye is slim to none. VS and SI diamonds are considered fantastic value because their inclusions are generally not visible to the naked eye. In my opinion you are better off investing in the colour, size and cut of your diamond. These characteristics are more visible at first glance and create the overall impression a diamond gives versus something that you can only see when magnified. When I’m buying a diamond – I buy it based on what you can see moreso than what you cannot. Contrary to what some people believe, clarity will not effect the brilliance of a diamond. It is the cut that has the most impact and we will touch on that in next week’s column.

Ways to encourage your kids to save One of those classic sayings that has stood the test of time is ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’. Our grandparents said it to our parents, our parents said it to us, now it’s time to take a stance and put an end to this saying! Money management is one of the most important life skills and it’s time to get your children trained up. It’s one of those things they seldom teach in schools, although it’s so important for everyone to learn from a young age. So what are some ways you can teach them how to save? 1. Open a savings account for them Head to the bank with your child and open a savings account with them, going through the entire application process together. 2. Set up a money jar at home In addition to the savings account, you should also encourage your kids to accumulate their cash and loose change at home. Why not try using a clear glass jar ? These let your kids see in tangible form how much they’ve saved and how their collection of cash grows over time. 3. Get them to earn their money Encourage your kids to work for their money and get them to do chores and odd jobs around the house for cash. Doing so will allow them to learn to place value on the money they receive as something they have to earn instead of watching it land in their pocket every week. 4. Match their savings with your own contributions Even the most eager of savers needs a bit of a hand to keep them going, so why not help out your child and chip in with some contributions of your own? Top up your child’s savings every time they reach a milestone. For example, you could contribute $2 each time they save $10. Your child with appreciate it and it’s a great way to teach them about interest. 5. Help them make a budget No matter how little they spend every week, budgeting is a skill that can be learned early and will become very useful later on. Sit with your child and work out a plan, outlining the total money they receive every week and how this should be portioned out for various purposes.

Top three tips for good health? 1. Nutrition: If you can hunt it or grow it then eat it! You want to be trying to eat foods that are going to be nutritionally dense and not an industrialised, processed food. Organic, free range animal meats and organic leafy greens need to be the base of that and you can expand from there. 2. Hydration: The human body can’t function without water. Aim for 30mL a day per kilogram of body weight. 3. Sleep: Aim for eight hours a night. The body needs a chance to rest and recover after a stressful day so that your body’s hormone cycles can get everything nice and fresh for the next day. A daily ‘must do’?

Sleep is just one key component to ensuring you are brain fit

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I have recently been doing a fair bit of training with kettlebells. You feel that much stronger and fitter by using them and most importantly, they are functional.

Stretch. Your body cannot work properly if everything is tight and restricting your range of motion. Being tight and stiff isn’t just bad for your training where it could cause injury, it is also bad for your day to day life where people spend most of the day sitting down giving themselves bad posture.

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? I have to be a role model for my clients. If I’m not listening to my body and doing all the little things right, how can I expect them to do it when I’m not? Freestyle – anything else you want to say? The most important thing about going on this health and fitness journey is to enjoy it. If it feels more like a task than something you want to do it will never work. Mix things up, experiment with recipes and keep it fun.

Biggest health/fitness misconception? That counting calories will help you lose weight. Yes it may work in the short term but it is not healthy and cannot be sustained.

Exercise is good for you. Exercise and using your brain is even better, though. Even just a quick search on the internet shows the links between physical and mental health. When we think about exercise we generally think about how we look on the outside, or how healthy we feel on the inside. Brain fitness though is very important. Brain fitness is the capacity of a person to meet the various cognitive demands of life. Having strong brain fitness means you will have the best chance of getting through the various challenges and issues that confront us. This includes the ability to assimilate information, comprehend relationships, and develop reasonable conclusions and plans. Brain fitness can be developed by formal education, being mentally engaged in life, continuing to learn, and exercises designed to challenge cognitive skills. So how do you get brain fit? Well, it’s not all that different to your regular fitness and health regimes. You need to make sure you have healthy lifestyle habits including mental stimulation, physical exercise, good nutrition and good stress management. Sleep can improve brain fitness. You are not a hero if you sleep four hours a night and tell everyone about it. In fact, you are doing damage to yourself! From the moment you’re born, brain fitness is crucial. The first three years of life are a period of incredible growth in all areas of a baby’s development. A newborn’s brain is about 25 per cent of its approximate adult weight. But by age three, it has grown dramatically by producing billions of cells and hundreds of trillions of connections, or synapses, between these cells. Just like we have all heard the old ‘use it or lose it’ principle applied to our muscles, the same applies to our mind. And it keeps going as we mature into adults – in fact it keeps going as long as we do.

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? Feeling strong, positive and happy. It’s amazing how you feel when you start being active and eating well. You feel like you can overcome any hurdles that come your way.

The weight will eventually come back and you will weigh more than before. It’s all about the quality of food!

How does fitness feature in your life? I was always quite an active kid growing up, playing every sport under the sun. Being active and healthy has always been a part of my life. I stuck with cricket and have been playing and coaching for many years. About five years ago I wanted to take my game to the next level so I joined the local gym and started training. I fell in love with the industry, and with my passion for being able to teach and coach people I decided to do my PT course so I could combine the two together and try to make a difference to people’s lives and have been doing that for over two years now.

Burial of your pet can be a difficult decision too but there are lots of options

VET

When is euthanasia the answer?

Now’s the time to get your flu jab

One of the hardest decisions you will have to make for your pet’s life is when to say goodbye. For our pets we are able to say goodbye when life becomes intolerable and there is no quality remaining. But when is the right time? As a veterinarian I also find this decision a difficult one because it is a very emotional time for all. There are several indications that the time has come to say goodbye. If your pet isn’t able to get up and move to go to the toilet, this is one of the indicators that your pet’s life has become difficult. Other indicators include not wanting to eat or drink, showing no interest in life and not interacting with the rest of the family. Pets, just like us, are often unable to sleep peacefully due to pain, which can increase their suffering. All of these factors are taken into consideration when deciding if it is the right time to say goodbye. Older animals or pets with chronic disease can have bad days. When the bad days outweigh the good days then the time has probably come for euthanasia. So what does euthanasia involve? Pets are normally sedated with a combination of pain killers and tranquillisers. This will make your pet very sleepy and a catheter is then placed into the vein and an anaesthetic overdose is given. This is pain free and your pet will drift to sleep. I often talk to my clients about where they would like the euthanasia to occur. Depending on the pet and the owners this can be at the veterinary clinic or at home if the pet and client are more comfortable in this environment. It is important during this emotional time that you are in a supportive environment. The next big question is what to do with your pet’s body. Options include home burial, burial at a pet cemetery, cremation or veterinary clinical burial. Euthanasia is a difficult decision but one that needs to be made. If you need to discuss this difficult decision or have any concerns regarding your animal’s quality of life, feel free to contact Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic on 4731 3055.

As we head into winter, we also begin the influenza season. Influenza, or the flu, is a highly contagious infection of the nose, throat or lungs caused by a virus. It can range from mild symptoms to quite severe. The most effective way to prevent catching the flu is to get immunised with the flu vaccine and now is the perfect time to get it. Around this time of year the inevitable critics and warnings in the media come up about the flu vaccine. So to sort myth from reality, I’ve put together my most frequently asked questions on the flu vaccine. Why is the flu vaccine recommended? The flu vaccine reduces your chances of getting the flu and also reduces the severity of flu symptoms if you catch the flu. It is the most effective way to guard against the flu and evidence shows it gives around 70 – 90 per cent protection. How often should I get the vaccine? You should get vaccinated every year around March and April, which is just before the flu season. The vaccine takes around two weeks to be effective, so the sooner the better. Is the flu vaccine safe? While no vaccine is 100 per cent safe, allergic reactions are very rare. Immunisation providers are trained to ask about potential allergic reactions before giving the vaccine and to treat such reactions if they occur following the vaccination. Can I get sick from the flu shot? No, it is not possible to get the flu from the flu vaccine. If you develop the flu soon after having the vaccine, generally it is because you have been infected before the vaccine has had time to take effect. After the vaccination, you may still get the flu but you will experience a milder case than those who were not vaccinated. You may also experience mild, flu-like symptoms for up to 48 hours after the flu shot as your immune system responds to the vaccine. People over 65 and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are eligible for a free vaccination, along with some other groups.

Jesus and his life has been recorded in sources that are non Christian

Jesus really did exist and here’s the proof It is amazing how some people continue to think that Jesus is a myth, an imaginary person who never existed. Do you think like that? Well, here’s a surprise! Did you know that many things about Jesus’ life can be found in books and sources outside of the Bible? And in most cases these things were written by people who were not supporters or fans of Jesus or Christianity. For example, from non Christian sources outside of the Bible, we know that not only was Jesus a real person, but we know when and where Jesus lived, that he was an influential teacher, that he was engaged in activities thought to be supernatural, that in around 33AD he was put to death on a Roman cross by Pontius Pilate, that he had a brother called James who was also executed, that people claimed to have seen him raised from the dead and finally, that he was widely known by the prestigious title of ‘The Christ’. It just won’t work to think that Jesus didn’t exist! When you look at the evidence for Jesus, you will see that he was a real person who lived, died and rose from the dead. And because Jesus rose from the dead and is alive today, it means everything about him directly impacts your life now! You can check this out by reading something like the Bible’s gospel of Luke. Luke tells how he “carefully investigated everything from the beginning” to write “an orderly account” to his friend, Theophilus, so he would “know the certainty of the things he had been taught”. This is a “certainty” you can know that will transform your life!

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

Big week gets the big tick Local residents have loved attending the myriad of events held during Seniors Week 2014

P

“This is the first time I have been involved with seniors week – it’s a lovely thing because there are lots of us in our area. It is great for people to have the opportunity to try new things and it is a good way to encourage seniors to get out of the home.”

JIM TIBERI, U3A Nepean Luncheon “I think is it a good opportunity to recognise senior citizens who in one way or another have contributed a lot to society. There is a lot of knowledge, experience and life experience there and we should tap into it.”

SUE BENZIE, 67, Storytime with your grandchildren at Penrith Library

NERIDA YULE, 77, U3A Nepean Luncheon “Seniors Week is a great recognition of the older members of the community. It’s about getting out and socialising. There are so many things we can do like music, art, ballroom dancing and meditation.”

JOHN SMITH, 68, PCYC Rockin’ through the 50’s event and lunch “As you get older, you miss a lot of the things you used to do. Seniors Week is good because it is an opportunity to do them again. It’s all about assimilation and opportunity.”

KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

enrith’s over 55’s spent this week celebrating being senior citizens with a wide range of events, activities and luncheons across the local area. Seniors Week is the only week of the year dedicated to the older people in the community, offering them a chance to try a new skill, meet up with their friends or enjoy a special performance. West Life visited a number of these events in the local area to chat to the young at heart about the annual event.

CARMEL OXLEY, 66, U3A Nepean Luncheon “Seniors Week is great. It gives a focus to people who are getting older. Even though we are getting older, we don’t have one foot in the grave anymore, like they used to at this age – we still have lives, we do things, we have friends, we have fun, we take holidays. It’s about celebrating our quality of life! Seniors Week lets us focus on the positive, not the negative.”

Alzheimer’s Australia NSW is reminding the community this Seniors Week that life doesn’t stop once a diagnosis of dementia has been given. Alzheimer’s Australia NSW CEO The Hon. John Watkins said with help and support, people with dementia could continue to live active and fulfilling lives. “Alzheimer’s Australia NSW can provide people with information, support and other services that can assist them to remain independent and socially active once they have received a diagnosis,” Mr Watkins said. “For example, for people living with early stage dementia and their carers, there is the early intervention program Living with Memory Loss, which can really help people understand their diagnosis, connect with others in similar circumstances and provide them with tools to better manage the condition. “While there are three in 10 people over the age of 85 and almost one in 10 people over 65 living with dementia, it is important to remember that dementia is not a normal part of ageing.” Anyone concerned about their own or someone else’s memory should speak to a GP.

Elderly Aussies most at risk of skin cancer The skin is the body’s largest organ, yet people often fail to give it the care and attention it deserves. According to dermatologists, the number of skin cancers being diagnosed in Australia has doubled in recent years. Older Australians are most at risk, with a person’s chances of developing skin cancer increasing over time. Given the severe heatwaves we have been experiencing this summer, you may have been spending more time in the sun than usual. Perhaps you have been silencing your grandchildren’s ‘I’m bored’ moans by taking them to the beach or pool. Or, you may have decided to barricade yourself indoors with the air conditioning on full blast. Though you are clearly very sensible now, the time you spent in the sun when you were younger – and not so sensible – may soon start showing its effects. In the past, the concept of being ‘sunsmart’ was not drilled into young people as much as it is today. Either through neglecting the use of sunscreen while working outdoors, or laying on the beach seeking the perfect golden tan, almost everyone has fallen victim to sunburn at some stage in their life. If you notice a new spot, changes in a spot, mole or freckle, or a sore that won’t heal, you should get it checked as soon as possible. Often people put off going to the doctor, as they are nervous about the outcome of the appointment. Not only is early detection key to avoiding serious illness, a visit to your doctor may help calm your anxieties. As you look at yourself in the mirror on a daily basis, it may be obvious to you when something is out of the ordinary. And even if you haven’t noticed that strange mole on your back until today, it’s never too late to start caring for your skin. According to the Cancer Council the best ways to prevent skin cancer are to: remain indoors or under cover when the sun is at its strongest; cover up with a hat, tops with sleeves and a collar, and pants that fall below the knee; apply a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every two hours; and wear close fitting sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard. It is important to take precautions!
