COVER STORY

Daughter of the King makes a musical mark of her own Lisa Marie Presley opens up about Elvis, Graceland, her family and her own musical journey, which brings her to Australia next month for a live performance at Rooty Hill RSL.

amous from the second she was born, Lisa Marie Presley has lived life in the public eye. But while she may have been tabloid fodder in her early years, it’s her music that’s earning recognition now.

F

SHANNON COCHRANE @shanc_91

As the daughter of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie learned to handle the spotlight when she was young – her family name and a string of high profile marriages has fuelled insatiable public interest in her life. Her childhood home, Graceland, was opened to the public after her father passed away and has become one of America’s most popular tourist attractions. While having personal memorabilia on public display might seem surreal to most people, Presley said she doesn’t mind sharing memories of life with her father with Elvis fans. “It doesn’t bother me at all, I would have only objected to upstairs being opened up, to his bedroom and my bedroom, but I have been used to that, it started early in my life,” she said. “It was a little tough to get used to in the beginning because I was still living there, I used to stay there. They opened the gravesite first then eventually the house. “I’ve been used to it for so long, I don’t mind... I see how much pleasure it brings people, and that’s it, and I’m sure he’d [Elvis] be happy about that.” The 46-year-old singer will be returning to Australia for the first time in eight years, touring across the country with a performance at Rooty Hill RSL on Tuesday, April 1. Her show will mostly focus on songs from her most recent album, ‘Storm and Grace’, although tracks from her first two albums will also be performed during the stripped back, intimate concert. “I won’t be flying around having a trapeze artist or anything behind me or strippers,” Presley joked. “It’s a very intimate record, very organic record and the show is also the same. It’s very raw, organic, very much just me and the band, doing what we do... it’s just straight up, if you like the record, you’ll be hearing the songs live.” While Presley’s early releases were edgy pop rock, ‘Storm and Grace’ has a strong Americana, folk sound with some reviewers suggesting that the Memphis-born singer has embraced the Southern heritage of her father. Presley, who collaborated with 12 time Grammy Award winner T Bone Burnett to make the album, said that her change in style is a result of being free to explore her

own musical tastes and direction, giving her plenty of flexibility. “I had the freedom to do whatever I wanted, I didn’t have a record company breathing down my neck saying ‘write a hit, write a rock song, write a pop song, write a this song or whatever song’,” Presley said. “I just wrote whatever I wanted to write and what came out of my heart and then T Bone, thank God, fell in love with it and really mentored me to do it.” Being the only child of an era-defining musician meant that there was plenty of speculation over whether Presley had her father’s talent running through her veins. Despite the heavy expectation weighing over her, Presley prioritised family over a career and waited until she reached her mid-30’s to debut her music to the public. “I was busy being a mum and having children, I really was happy and satisfied with doing that, being a wife. I really wasn’t in a hurry, I took my time, I did it when I was ready... it wasn’t any mystery, I loved being a mother, I’m a caretaker and I was busy doing that,” she said. She still remains devoted to her children and will be bringing her five-year-old twin girls, Harper and Finley, on tour down under as well as her eldest daughter Riley.

“The cubs are never far from the lioness, they’re always with us,” she said. “My older children as well – I have to tell you, it does not end at 18. The problems just get bigger... they get themselves in situations and I’m still going ‘oh my god’ all the time, and watching them knowing the outcome of what they’re doing, it’s horrifying sometimes,” she said. Although the star sometimes worries about the effects of touring on her young twins, she said that her daughters have become accustomed to traveling the world with her and her husband, Michael Lockwood. “The twins are always with me, it’s a little tough sometimes because they get cooped up in hotels or something while we do the shows but they’re kind of little road dogs now, they toured for three months last year with us and they kind of enjoyed waking up every day and looking out the window and wondering which state or city we’re in,” she said. Lisa Marie Presley will perform at Rooty Hill RSL on Tuesday, April 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $60, or $225 including a meet and greet. For bookings or more information, call 9625 5500 or visit www.rootyhillrsl.com. au online.

Paying tribute to a legendary band

Fleetwood Mac was one of the most iconic and important bands of the 1970’s

After touring across many venues in Sydney over the past five years, the performers in The Fleetwood Mac Show have managed to perfect their take on Fleetwood Mac’s unique music and style. The concept for the major concert production was formed in 1999 by Gary Stewart and Ursula Cain-Stewart, who moved from New Zealand to Sydney and began scouting for musical talent to join their tribute show. They settled on a live seven piece band made up of some of Sydney’s best session musicians, who back up the stunning vocals of lead singer Ursula Cain-Stewart, whose talent is reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac had a string of eradefining hits at the peak of their career, and all of these are covered in ‘Running in the Shadows – The Australian Fleetwood Mac Show’ including ‘Dreams’, ‘Gold Dust Woman’, ‘Go Your Own Way’, ‘Tusk’, ‘The Chain’, ‘Rhiannon’, ‘Gypsy’ and ‘Don’t Stop’. There’s plenty of other hits that get a run, too, so you won’t miss out on your favourite. The show also delves into a brief yet fascinating history of the classic band, exploring important biographical details that are set to a dramatic lighting show. ‘Running in the Shadows – The Australian Fleetwood Mac Show’ will play at the EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Saturday, March 22 at 8pm. Tickets are $10 for members and $20 for visitors, and there is also an option to purchase tickets that include a meal, so you can make it a complete night out. For bookings or more information about this fantastic show, visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au.

If you missed Fleetwood Mac’s tour of Australia last year, the next best thing will be performing at Penrith Panthers later this month

970’s superstars Fleetwood Mac toured Australia last year but any fans who missed their concert still have the chance to see the next best thing. ‘Running in the Shadows – The Australian Fleetwood Mac Show’ gives audiences an entertainment experience that channels the spirit and soul of the popular folk pop band. They will be performing at the EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Saturday, March 22 in a show that will bring back the sound of the 70’s. Formed in the 1960’s, Fleetwood Mac became one of the most popular bands in the world, with their blues-tinged rock songs resonating with audiences and earning them millions of record sales. Their catchy music is paid tribute to in ‘Running in the Shadows’, which provides the sound and atmosphere of an iconic band.

rom starting out as a child star then joining a boy band to becoming a world famous solo artist, Justin Timberlake has come a long way in his career. The American star recently announced that The 20/20 Experience World Tour will be coming to Australia later this year, with a concert at Sydney’s Allphones Arena on Wednesday, October 1. The tour, which is Timberlake’s first headlining tour in six years, has been selling out venues around the globe and will be sure to do the same in Australia, where the singer has a large fan base. This year has already been hugely successful for Timberlake, who recently won three Grammy Awards including Best R&B Song, and three American Music Awards including Favourite Pop/ Rock Male Artist. His album ‘The 20/20 Experience’ has dominated the charts, holding the number one spot in

a child in television shows ‘Star Search’ and ‘The All-New Mickey Mouse Club’, Timberlake transitioned to a music career as a lead singer of the popular 90’s boy band N Sync. He then pursued a solo career, with songs such as ‘Cry Me A River’, ‘Rock Your Body’, ‘Like I Love You’ and ‘Sexy Back’ becoming massive hits. While Timberlake is most famous for his music, he has also taken on acting roles in films including ‘Bad Teacher’, ‘The Social Network’, ‘Friends with Benefits’ and ‘In Time’. His stage presence on ‘The 20/20 Experience World Tour’ has been met with positive concert reviews, with the New York Times writing: “With his hair slicked back, wearing Tom Ford clothes – Mr Timberlake was every bit the 21st century entertainer, a song-and-dance man with subwoofers”. Justin Timberlake will perform at Allphones Arena in Sydney on Wednesday, October 1. For bookings or more information, visit www.livenation.com.au or www. justintimberlake.com.au.

Big Brother back for another year One of my favourite shows over the past few years is Matt LeBlanc’s British comedy ‘Episodes’. Good news for fans of the show is that it’s returning soon, however not on Channel Nine where the previous two seasons aired. Instead Foxtel’s UKTV have picked up season three of the former ‘Friends’ star’s Golden Globe-winning hit, which is soon to premiere.

Everyone’s favourite music quiz show ‘RocKwiz’ is returning to SBS for its 12th season on Monday, March 24 at 9.30pm. The first episode begins with a special episode saluting Australian songwriters Harry Vanda and George Young who were responsible for working with some of Australia’s biggest bands in The Angels, AC/DC and The Easybeats.

Auditions for the 2014 season of ‘Big Brother’ are currently underway. Along with the usual auditioning process, producers have added a cool twist where people can nominate someone else. Auditions are on April 12 and 13. See the website for details.

After struggling on free to air television, ‘Hannibal’ is set to make its debut on FOX8 from March 27. Before ‘Silence of the Lambs’ and before ‘Red Dragon’, Hannibal Lecter was a brilliant psychiatrist employed by the FBI. This is a really chilling show.

A few Fox shows have been given the go-ahead for new seasons. ‘Brooklyn NineNine’ which is yet to air in Australia has been awarded a second season; comedy ‘New Girl’ which airs on ELEVEN wins a fourth season; and ‘The Following’ (Nine) gets a third season.

‘Greys Anatomy’ fans listen up, a familiar face is due to rejoin the cast after seven years away. Isaiah Washington, who played Dr Preston Burke, is being brought back as part of the farewell storyline for Cristina Yang, played by Sandra Oh. Washington was spectacularly fired in 2007.

cehouse’s lengthy catalogue of hits has made them one of the most iconic bands in Australian music history. The group, who are a household name in Australia, will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Thursday, March 20. Lead singer Iva Davies said that Icehouse chose Rooty Hill RSL as a venue as it was one of the first clubs they played at when they began touring after a long hiatus. With eight Top 10 albums to their name and plenty of hits, Icehouse are among Australia’s best known bands with songs such as ‘Great Southern Land’, ‘Electric Blue’, ‘Hey Little Girl’ and ‘We Can Get Together’ becoming national favourites. Davies and Icehouse have won numerous awards including the Countdown Award for Most Popular Male Performer and ARIA Awards for Best Selling Album and Highest Selling Album for ‘Man of Colours’. While fans of Icehouse may be used to their classic rock style, the band has been adding a fun reggae twist to their original songs, which they will perform at the Rooty Hill show. “This one will be a little different because at the end of last year I had a mad idea… we turned our entire set into reggae songs,

THE MONUMENTS MEN RATED M Starring: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett & John Goodman

PHARRELL WILLIAMS GIRL Out Now

George Clooney returns to the role of director for his newest movie, ‘The Monuments Men’. Joining him in the cast are Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman and two time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett. Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, ‘The Monuments Men’ focuses on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements. It’s a film that most will enjoy.

Grammy award winning artist Pharrell has released his second studio album, ‘Girl’. Following his debut album titled ‘In My Mind’ in 2005, Pharrell then became involved in vocal work and collaborations with other artists including Beyonce, Britney Spears and Madonna. He is a creative force to be reckoned with and is always one step ahead in the musical field, achieving success not only as an artist but also a producer. From June through December 2013, the Top Five of the Billboard 200 featured 10 albums that involved him, including the number ones ‘Random Access Memories’, ‘Blurred Lines’, ‘Magna Carta...Holy Grail’, and Beyoncé. Pharrell has a distinctive style that is contributing to the redefinition of music. The first single of ‘Girl’ is Oscar winning song, ‘Happy’, that has seen great success in the charts. Artists such as Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys appear on the hit-filled album. The soulful ‘Happy’ doesn’t sound out of place in a set of upbeat, candy-coated pop-R&B that is relatively modernsounding and sure to please Pharrell’s fans. Simply put the album is fun, frivolous and low on excess.

WINE

A seafood wine out of the hills DAVID ELLIS

he Adelaide Hills region has an enviable reputation for producing many of Australia’s finest Sauvignon Blancs, and local maker Chain of Ponds has released a 2012 under their First Lady label that proved an absolute winner when matched at a mate’s birthday bash with simply-done barbecued Tasmanian salmon. With loads of varietal tropical fruit, citrus zest and green apple flavours, plus savoury French oak from fermentation in new and one-year-old wood, this Sauvignon Blanc also has a nice, lively acidity to enjoy now or after a couple more years in the cellar. The Chain of Ponds name, by the way, has an interesting talking-point history to it: originally named Philptown in 1850 after the founding publican, Oliver Philp of the Morning Star Hotel, it was later changed to Chain of Ponds in 1864 in recognition of a nearby string of ponds that never dried up, even in the driest and hottest of summers. In 1918 the Milbrook Reservoir was built next to the village to supply Adelaide, and people in that city expressed such grave concerns their water supply would be polluted by the village being on the edge of their reservoir, that in 1970 the State Government decided to buy and demolish every building in Chain of Ponds, doing so by 1981. At $35 this Chain of Ponds First Lady is a great Sauvignon Blanc to truly enjoy with the whole spectrum of seafoods, including as we did with that barbecued Tassie salmon.

he talented dancers of The Australian Ballet will be bringing Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece ballet ‘Manon’ back to the Sydney stage in 2014. Opening in Melbourne for 12 performances, ‘Manon’ will then travel to the Sydney Opera House for 20 performances from Thursday, April 3 until Wednesday, April 23. The tragic love story follows the downfall of a young beauty who transforms from being a courtesan in the salons of Paris to a struggling fugitive hiding out in the steamy swamps of Louisiana. Based on Abbé Prévost’s beloved novel and created for The Royal Ballet back in 1974, ‘Manon’ takes audiences back in time to an 18th century world of debauchery and romance, with the heroine forced to choose between love and diamonds. The plotline follows Manon who falls in love with a student, des Grieux, but gets drawn into the enchantment of a life of luxury that he cannot offer. Seduced by the promise of furs and jewels, Manon slips away from her first love and ends up on the road to tragedy as her life unravels. With beautiful sets and costumes designed by Peter Farmer, The Australian Ballet’s epic production of ‘Manon’ brings MacMillan’s vision of Paris to life. From rich brocades and glittering jewels

contrasted with tattered rags, prison cells and ominous swamps, the show’s visuals perfectly complement its riches-to-rags plotline. The Australian Ballet’s Artistic Director David McAllister said that 20 years after its Australian debut, ‘Manon’ is set to captivate audiences all over again with its intriguing plot and stunning dance. “Sir Kenneth MacMillan was a master storyteller, and our dancers relish the opportunity to tackle his challenging choreography and characterisation,” McAllister said. “‘Manon’ is an epic production in every proportion – a big costume ballet with lively scenes that see a full cast on stage together, accompanied by a gritty and in-depth, human story.” This season will be the first time Australian audiences will hear the new orchestration by long-time ‘Manon’ conductor Martin Yates. The Australian Ballet’s production of ‘Manon’ will run at the Sydney Opera House between Thursday, April 3 and Wednesday, April 23. For bookings or more information, call 1300 396 741 or visit www.australianballet.com.au. West Life has two double passes to the opening night performance of ‘Manon’ on Thursday, April 3 at 7.30pm to give away. For your chance to win one, email the code word ‘BALLET’ to competitions@ westernweekender.com.au with your name and contact details. Entries close Wednesday, March 19. Authorised under NSW Permit Number LTPM/14/00047. Terms and conditions at www.westernweekender.com.au or from Weekender reception.

Harvey (not his real name) reflects on his life and its recent developments at the Nepean River in Penrith. Photo: Melinda Jane

SPECIAL REPORT

Meet the man who found his second family after 50 years For the many thousands of people who are adopted, tracking down their biological parents can be both a daunting and rewarding experience, as one Penrith man discovered CASSANDRA O’CONNOR @cassandra_o

Friday 14 March 2014 the western weekender – west life

P

eople sometimes tell Harvey (not his real name) that he is lucky because he was “chosen” by his parents. He agrees, but for different reasons. Harvey was adopted soon after his birth in the 1960’s and never really gave too much thought to his biological family – until two years ago. After recently tracking down his biological family, the Penrith resident considers himself one of the luckiest people alive, because now he holds a special place in not just one family but two. “I have always known I was adopted at the age of three-months-old and I have always appreciated the honesty of my family for telling me,” Harvey said. He grew up in the Nepean region as the eldest child in his family.

“I have very fond memories growing up, I have a great family and great brothers and sisters,” he said. “Even though I was adopted, I never felt like the odd one out, our family is Christian and has strong values.” Despite being aware of his adoption all his life, Harvey said he never really had the urge to find out more about his biological family until he was triggered to reflect on his heritage just two years ago. “It wasn’t until two years ago that I started to think about what my parents might be like,” he said. “I started thinking that if they had given birth to me at a young age they might be in their 70’s and if they were older, maybe in their 80’s. I decided that I didn’t want to die wondering, so contacted the Benevolent Society for help about tracking them down.” As Australia’s oldest charity celebrating 200 years this year, amongst other family and community services, the Benevolent Society runs the Post Adoption Resource Centre, which helps people affected by

adoption find family members, facilitate reunions and provides counselling. Harvey was informed that his first action should be to apply for his original birth certificate. It contained plenty of surprises. “The point of getting my original birth certificate was to find out the names of my parents. There they were: Leslie Edgar Hunt and his wife Joan,” he said. “It also listed the details of my six siblings – three brothers and three sisters. All of a sudden I went from being the eldest to youngest in my family – I had no idea!” But the search did not progress smoothly. Harvey checked the electoral rolls from the 1960s and his parents weren’t listed. “I hit a dead end. I didn’t know what to do,” he said. “Then I got a phone call from the Benevolent Society and they said to me, ‘We think we have found Leslie, he is living in South Australia’. “I hadn’t been that nervous but now I was. I wrote a letter and stated that I was

looking for information about a family member – a boy born in the 1960s in southern NSW and gave my mobile number. “Two days later I received an SMS saying, ‘I might have the information you require’. I thought it was from a young person so I felt really disheartened, but I called and an old man answered. “It was like a massive relief for him, I could tell he was so happy that he could finally get it off his chest.” Harvey spoke to his biological dad for 20 minutes. “It is still strange to call him dad, because I have my dad, but I feel pretty lucky,” he said. The phone call answered a lot of questions for Harvey – he couldn’t track his parents because after his birth the family of eight had moved back to England for four years and then to South Australia. His parents were divorced, but Leslie had a phone number for Joan. The phone call didn’t go well and Harvey does not remain in contact with his biological mother. But he still maintains that tracking down his family has been incredibly positive. “Soon after I received a call from a big sister. She balled her eyes out as girls do,” Harvey said. “She remembered the day her mother went to the hospital to give birth to me. My parents had even painted a cot in readiness, but they had actually already made the decision not to keep me. “Once I was born, she said she could remember dad coming down to the car where the kids were and telling them that I had died during the birth. She told me that as a 10-year-old girl she would wander through the local cemetery sometimes, trying to find a baby that had died.”

The Benevolent Society can help families track down adopted children through their Adoption Resource Centre Harvey did ask his dad why he was put up for adoption and the answer was actually quite simple. “He told me with six kids they just couldn’t afford me, that it wouldn’t have been possible, so they had decided adoption was the answer and had made a vow never to tell anyone else,” Harvey said. “Times were tough and they had the best intentions.”

Harvey has spoken to his new brothers and sisters, and says that it is still surreal to have a second family. “It is strange when we swap family photos, because sometimes I think, ‘there they are in that photo in front of the backyard pool, hey I should be in that photo but I am not’,” he said. One sister is even travelling to Sydney from South Australia this month to go the

Maybe it’s time to stop ‘faking it’ When shapewear first came onto the market in its current form (yes, I’m talking about Spanx) it changed the lives and look of women everywhere. Quit that pilates class, forget the early morning yoga and slip into a tight pencil skirt because your lumps and bumps are virtually a thing of the past. And, without those lumps and bumps, you can also say goodbye to feeling self conscious and embrace a higher self esteem. These miracle products that make your hips, thighs and tummy look perfectly tight improve the way that women see themselves, which is a wonderful thing, but what if I told you that shapewear may actually have adverse affects on the wearer’s health? Chiropractors across Australia are actually saying that by wearing shapewear for long periods of time, or on a daily basis, you may end up with some serious health issues. “Wearing Spanx and other such garments can encourage muscles to stop doing their job. Muscles should be encouraged to work, not remain ‘lazy’,” said Dr Joseph Lerano, who is the president of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia. “Muscle should be built up through good habits of mobility and exercise rather than an external item of clothing.” He went on to explain that shapewear prevents the body from moving normally, creating more problems and masking serious conditions that you may develop. Luckily, you can avoid serious conditions by reserving shapewear for special occasions only... but it’s a scary thought, isn’t it? I personally think that artificially enhancing your look with something non-invasive like shapewear, makeup or even a fake tan is an absolutely brilliant concept that I would be lost without but hearing this really made me think. Are we really looking after ourselves, both mentally and physically, by using all these artificial beautifying products all the time? Physically, if this chiropractor’s warning is right, it appears that we aren’t and it doesn’t stop with shapewear. Take a fake tan for instance, there can be arguments made

KATHERINE TWEED

life & style

for both sides. Yes, by eliminating the desire to get a natural tan we are less likely to have prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful rays but some fake tans contain chemicals that may prove harmful (although there is still much research to be done and for now they are 100 per cent the safer option). Sometimes I feel like makeup is not all that good for me either – I can’t help but think of the pimples that pop up the day after I forget to remove my makeup before bed. Surely skin covered in products full of unnatural chemicals can’t be good. But what about our mental wellbeing? I always feel more confident the day after I get a fake tan and putting my makeup on each morning makes me feel good about myself. If you look at this in the long run though, are we teaching ourselves to only be happy with the enhanced versions of ourselves, rather than the natural? I have absolutely no reason to feel negatively about the way I look without makeup, without a fake tan or without shapewear and the same thing applies to you! This week I am going to take some baby steps to make sure I love myself without the fake – my first mission: spend less time in my makeup! I’d love to hear from you if you’ve decided to stop ‘faking it’ when it comes to the way you look. Send me an email to Katherine.Tweed@westernweekender.com.au or call me on 4722 2998.

Colour can be affected by the cut and clarity of the stone, as well as other elements

Picking the right colour for your diamond Let’s continue with our diamond buying journey and begin discussing ‘The 4 C’s’. This week we will start with colour. The colour grading of a white diamond is a characteristic that will heavily impact the look of your stone. It is often considered to be one of the most important factors. Unlike the internal impurities (inclusions) in a diamond that are only visible under 10x magnification, colour is graded by the naked eye and therefore even the slightest hint of ‘yellow’ can be visible as soon as you look at the stone if the grading is too low. Colour is graded using the alphabet and begins with ‘D’ being the whitest all the way through to ‘Z’ which can start to resemble a fancy yellow diamond. The most popular colours are D, E and F – also referred to as ‘colourless’ – and G to H, which still considered white and ‘near colourless’. Fancy coloured diamonds such as pink, yellow and blue are a different entity all together. Many people choose to go with a diamond as close to colourless as their budget allows and are happy to come to a compromise with the clarity as long as no inclusions are visible, which we will touch on next week. The colour of a white diamond can also be affected by the cut and clarity of the stone. For example, if a diamond is cut poorly even a high colour grade can appear darker, therefore not truly highlighting the beauty of a colourless stone. If a diamond is highly fluorescent and exhibits a ‘milky’ hue this can detract from the colour too. My recommendation is to take the time to view a range of colours, both set in rings and loose, and view the diamonds from all angles to ensure that you are making an educated decision. Next week we discuss clarity. In the meantime, if you have any particular questions you would like me to answer, drop in to see me at York Jewellers in Westfield Penrith or send an email to news@westernweekender.com.au.

Have you been responsible with money? The Full Moon fires up your finance zones, and encourages your tendency to be careless with cash. But impulse buys now will lead to trouble later on. If you want your close relationships to improve, then you’re the one who’ll have to hold out the olive branch of peace.

Star predictions for the week beginning March 16

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Take a chill pill Virgo! The stars encourage you to prioritise tasks, and then power through urgent projects. The more you multitask and pace yourself, the less stressful the week will be. Loved ones are demanding your attention but the Full Moon urges you to take time out for yourself. Indulge your interests and passions.

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Romance is in the air this week. Attached Librans, dazzle your partner with a super special surprise. Singles, look for love with an amorous Aries or an avant-garde Aquarian. On the weekend, it’s time to explore what’s going on within your local community. So, whether it’s a market, art show, music concert or school fete, make the most of your neighbourhood connections.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Venus/Uranus aspects promise a positive week as you connect with family. Self-discipline is at an all-time low and the need to pursue pleasure at an all-time high. Venus is in Aquarius, which encourages you to be more adventurous. Your motto is from Katharine Hepburn: “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.”

All types of social events and group activities are favoured this week as you mix and mingle with an eclectic range of people from outside your usual circle of friends and acquaintances. Discover ways to make your home life happier and more harmonious. This may involve resolving issues with relatives.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

The Full Moon’s in your domestic sector, so get your house in order and tackle Gemini jobs with gusto. But, with Mercury moving into your career zone (where it hooks up with Neptune) work issues look confusing. Creativity and inspiration are high but so is delusion and self-doubt so get a second opinion from someone you trust.

You’re full of ideas and are in the mood for some spontaneous shenanigans but don’t rush in and overlook important details. Domestic circumstances keep changing so avoid burning bridges with loved ones by being too hasty. The more proactive and positive you are (and the more support you give family and friends) the better.

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

You may feel pulled in four different directions as personal, professional, domestic and relationship responsibilities pile up. Pace yourself, and take things one careful step at a time. The more you consult and cooperate with professional colleagues, the more successful you’ll be with your career zone now activated.

Are you feeling restless and ready for adventure? The Full Moon indicates travel or study are coming up over the next nine months. So start planning and researching your options ASAP. When it comes to a work matter, it may seem as if things are going backwards but you just have to be patient.

Rates Friday 14 March 2014 the western weekender – west life

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

will most likely stay on hold for several months, with no increase expected

What interest rate decisions mean to you Australians looking to take out home loans in the near future will likely have awaited last Tuesday’s official cash rate announcement with keen interest. It’s certainly not the most thrilling topic to be following – but with its implications for interest rates and the wider economy, it’s definitely something anyone seeking a mortgage should pay attention to. As most people will be aware, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) decided to leave the rate unchanged at its already historic low of 2.5 per cent – for the seventh month in a row – at its latest board meeting. In a statement released on Tuesday, March 4, RBA Governor Glenn Stevens revealed that “very accommodative” financial conditions and healthy equity and credit markets around the world were some of the factors behind the decision to stick to the current rate. Closer to home, a “solid expansion in housing construction” is expected in Australia alongside improving business conditions and confidence. According to Mr Stevens, an “accommodative” monetary policy is also set to continue benefiting consumers. “Interest rates are very low and savers continue to look for higher returns in response to low rates on safe instruments,” he said. “Credit growth remains low overall but is picking up gradually for households.” This is undoubtedly great news for new home buyers – with the cash rate likely to keep interest rates down, now is as good a time as any to jump into the property market. But what does the future hold? Experts from a range of industries have offered their predictions. “In the absence of any external shocks, it is likely that rates will remain on hold for some months yet,” said Geordan Murray, an economist at the Housing Industry Association. This action was largely down to the prolonged stability of both the cash rate and interest rates, which has helped boost home buyer confidence. As a result, banks and lenders are stepping up competition in a bid to win eager customers. If you already have a mortgage, you’ll want to consider whether it is wise to stick with a fixed or variable rate.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

IVANA BRCIC Where are you at in your life?

21 fruit. They don’t miss what they don’t know! Coconut water is the only ‘juice’ at our place.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

Top three tips for good health Life balance. We all need to stop occasionally and re-think where we are and what we’re doing with our lives. There is always some room for improvement whether that be our sleep, our food, our minds/spirituality or our physical condition. A problem in one area will always roll into the others. Always know where you can source good food. Feeding a family of six I’m always conscious that it’s my responsibility to fuel my family well, therefore my meats are grass fed and fruit and vegies organic. Surround yourself with positive people. Positivity will rub off! A daily must do Stop. Take some time to switch off the mind. Stop worrying about what’s on

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? Many years ago with three small children at home I was not in a good place. I didn’t like where I was in life, how I looked, how I felt, had no desire to socialise and felt alone. Always being an active person I turned to the gym and I used the gym as a form of escape. An escape from everyday mundane kiddie/housewife stuff. Through these daily escapes I learnt so much. I felt better about myself and therefore was a happier person (easier to live with says my husband!). I slept better, I ate better, I loved the world a whole lot more because my state of mind was in a better place. Not only had I found my ‘mojo’ again but the old ‘me’ had returned! The physical conditioning was an added bonus. I loved life again! tomorrow or what happened yesterday and give yourself some recharge time! Biggest health/fitness misconception Food! I fuel my family with lots of fat! Good old saturated fats. All the stuff that I used to tell my parents to stop eating (full cream milk and animal fats) I’m now feeding my family. I’ve learnt that the fats are exactly what they need – not all those sugary cereals, grainy breads and low fat options. If they want sugars they get lots of seasonal

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Currently I train CrossFit. After many years of training in a conventional gym setting I found that I wasn’t able to improve myself any further and needed more. Within three months of starting CrossFit I was seeing gains in my physical capabilities and had managed to move those last stubborn kilos. With CrossFit there is always a challenge, always a goal and I’m surrounded by wonderful positive, supportive people.

life & style

How does fitness feature in your life? I’m a ‘thirty something’-year-old mum of four. I live a crazy life managing my family, running a business, being a diligent student, everybody’s taxi driver, a tennis mum, a soccer mum, a karate mum but most importantly I’m ‘me’. I’m Ivana. I’m extremely passionate about all things ‘health’ and ensure that I always make time to maintain my own. Without putting valuable time into ‘me’ the rest would simply fall apart. All aspects of health are so important to me, not just to set an example to my children but to ensure I’m here to see them pass it on to their own.

All those people telling you to eat low fat may be killing you. Leading US cardiovascular research scientist Dr James DiNicolantonio said a “compelling argument can be made for the general lack of evidence in support of a low-fat diet”. Diets low in saturated fat do not prevent heart disease or improve health and instead public health warnings need to be issued over sugar he believes. “The public fear that saturated fat raises cholesterol is completely unfounded as the low-density lipoprotein particle size distribution is worsened when fat is replaced with carbohydrate,” he said. Dr DiNicolantonio said the idea that fat causes heart disease was based on a flawed 1950’s study which selectively used data from six countries but excluded data from another 16. This study led us down the wrong ‘dietary road’ for decades, by introducing mainstream guidelines increasing carbohydrates and decreasing saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet. Maybe our ancestors who used to eat whatever they caught might have been smarter than us. It’s funny but sometimes the more we know science-wise the further we get from being body-wise. It’s hard to imagine a few cavemen sitting around a recent kill, tearing meat off and gulping it down when a hand slowly raises and a caveman asks in a whiny voice, “have we got anything lower in fat, won’t this raise my cholesterol?” We really need to reconnect to our own instincts on what we should be eating. If you’re not feeling great or energetic after eating certain foods maybe you shouldn’t be eating them despite whatever you have heard about it. One of the problems is that people often don’t feel great at all any more, so it’s hard to isolate any particular meals. Try this for one weekend; do your shopping at the produce store. Go crazy, whatever you think will be nice. Lots of vegies, fruit, any cuts of meat you like – try to have no packets and definitely no processed food. Forget about limiting calories or fat. Eat as much good food as you feel like. I think the instincts that have worked to keep us alive for a couple million years might be able to get you through a weekend without some bogus government guidelines.

NICOLE MCMILLAN Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital

Cats need to be treated as soon as possible if they ingest any type of lily

VET

NATURAL THERAPIES

Curiosity really could kill the cat

Why is sugar so bad for us?

Lilies are commonly used in floral arrangements and cats often have access to them, however, most cat owners and florists are unaware that lilies are toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure. Indoor cats and especially kittens are drawn to flowers as they are a novel feature in a familiar environment. In investigating the flowers, cats will often play with and chew parts of the plant. This often goes unnoticed by owners and can even occur when the cat is home alone. The toxic chemical in lilies that causes injuries to the kidneys is unknown but all components of the plant are toxic – this includes the petals, stamen, leaves and pollen. As little as two leaves or part of a single flower have been reported to cause death. Even a kitten mouthing a plant should be considered a potentially fatal ingestion. There are many plants in the lily family (Liliaceae) including Asian, Day, Easter, Glory, Japanese Show, Peace, Red, Rubrum, Stargaszer, Tiger and Wood lilies and all of these plants are highly toxic. If you have cats you should never have lilies in your house or garden. Signs of lily toxicity usually start within several hours of ingestion and signs may include depression, loss of appetite and vomiting. Within one to three days, the toxin will cause sudden kidney failure and this will cause pain, drooling, vomiting and a marked reduction in the amount of urine produced. At this stage, aggressive treatment is needed and many cats will die despite treatment. If you suspect your cat may have ingested lilies it is vital that you seek immediate veterinary attention as early detection and treatment is vital. The prognosis for a full recovery is excellent if treatment is started before kidney failure develops. I urge all cat owners to take this on board.

As naturopaths we are constantly telling our clients to reduce or eliminate sugar from the diet. I am sure that many feel that we are overstating the problems that sugar causes, after all, ‘sugar is from a plant isn’t it’? Certainly it is but so are heroin and opium and cocaine, so you can’t use that as an argument. Recent research in the US has revealed the definite link between sugar added to processed foods and various illnesses. They found that only one sugar sweetened beverage per day increases the chance of dying from a heart attack and for those who obtained a quarter of their calories from added sugar the risk of heart attack was three times greater than for those who only got 10 per cent of their energy from theses sources. One can of soft drink can contain 35grams or more of sugar, but as Professor Naveed Satta, from the British Heart Foundation Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre (University of Glasgow) said, we believed that saturated fats were the major cause of heart attacks and this led to the food industry swapping these for what was presumed to be healthier sugars. This has now proved to not be a healthy choice. The real answer is to remove processed foods from your diet as much as possible. The problem is that many people want to keep eating the foods that they have come to like and the manufacturers fiddle with them to make it look like they are healthy but in fact they often make it worse. Another issue is the devious wording that is used to make it seem like you are getting something that is good for you. Marketing has now joined with nutrition advice on labels and if you are wise you will not trust what you read. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, “Would Great Grandma recognise this as food?”. If the answer is probably not, then you should not eat it. Our bodies are designed to process foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Eat plants that look like plants. Eat foods that recently came from a plant or animal and not overcooked or processed. Deal with your sweet tooth. If you want to hang around this planet longer eating healthy is becoming more important every day.

Why Jesus was so controversial Back in 1970 a book was written with the title Christ the Controversialist. This might seem an unusual title as you might be thinking, “What was controversial about Jesus?” Most people today think highly of Jesus; what he said; what he did; what he was on about. Yet, you might be surprised to know that many of Jesus’ contemporaries were alarmed by much of what he said. They found his teaching radical and were keen to keep him quiet. One of largest “blocks” of Jesus’ teaching is found in the Bible’s “The Sermon on the Mount”. One thing in particular that people found unsettling about Jesus was that he spoke with all the authority of God himself. This meant you could never easily sweep under the carpet anything Jesus said. Here’s an example; “You have heard it said, ‘Do not murder’... But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.’” Not only did Jesus challenge people about things like anger and hatred, he also spoke on adultery and cheap lust. He challenged the view of some who promoted an easy attitude to divorce, which cheapened the value of marriage. He spoke on the importance of being true to your word and keeping your promises; of not seeking revenge but to love and pray for your enemies. This was and continues to be radical stuff! Jesus raised the bar on relationships. In Jesus’ view, people matter. Relationships matter. Care for people is to be given the highest priority; forgiveness, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, self control; these are the qualities that make life work. If you seek after Jesus you will find these things.

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres has awarded $1,000 of funding each to Penrith Women’s Health Centre for their 50’s Rock and Roll event; Penrith City Council for their Live Life event; and YMCA Penrith. YMCA Penrith will be running over 11 different health, fitness and lifestyle programs that have been designed specifi-

Connect with others by going online Though your neighbour may surf the Internet with ease, you may feel intimidated at the mere prospect of using your local supermarket’s self-serve checkouts. At first glance, new technology does look intimidating. But it is never too late to learn! For young and old alike it is useful to own a mobile phone in case of an emergency. However, owning a mobile is often where older people draw the line on technology. There is a noticeable technological divide between grandparents and their grandchildren, who readily embrace every new gadget that comes along. You may have noticed that as they have gotten older they seem less interested in chatting to you and more interested in gluing themselves to their phone or computer. In order to avoid losing touch with your young ones, consider taking an interest in something that young people use on an everyday basis – the Internet. You never know, spending time with them and embracing their hobbies may benefit you too. Infinite new opportunities await you online. Not to mention, it is a highly useful tool for keeping in contact with family and friends. Email allows people to quickly and easily let someone know that they are thinking of them when they don’t have time to pick up the phone. It is also useful for swapping photos with your loved ones. If you are looking to rekindle some old friendships, sites like Facebook are ideal for connecting with old classmates and friends. Some people may feel as though they are not physically able to use technological devices because of poor eyesight or restricted movement. However, the range of products out there is immense and they are specifically designed to meet the varying needs of users. If you prefer something simple, tablet PCs are a good place to start. Increasing in popularity in recent years, tablets are space savers with simple features, making them the ideal choice for older people. Your grandchildren may be happy to share their expertise with you too, so it can be a great bonding exercise.

Pat Cattermole ALTHOUGH ORIGINALLY from the United Kingdom, Pat Cattermole has called Penrith home since 1967. She has three children who she raised at home before beginning 10 years of work at the confectionery store ‘Lackeys’ that became well known in Penrith with two stores between the Plaza and the arcade. Pat also revealed that she was featured in the Western Weekender many years ago for her work at this chocolate and lolly store. Amongst this she also worked voluntarily for the Police Boys Club, now known as PCYC, where she ran the canteen for 12 years. Having lived in Penrith for almost 50 years, Pat notes that the biggest changes that have affected her would be the size of the shops: “They have gone from being small, individually owned stores in the mall, well before the Plaza existed, to now large, franchised shops”.
