SPECIAL REPORT
Medical marijuana only a piece of legislation away The legalisation of cannabis for medicinal use has been bandied around for decades. Now it seems that NSW may be ready to take action on the traditionally controversial recreational drug and allow its supply to terminally ill patients.

feeding the recreational market or creating new supplies of the drug. Instead it focuses on ensuring that those cancer patients and others who are facing a terminal illness can find relief for their symptoms without fear of a court appearance or time in jail.” Under his own proposal, the NSW Government would allow people with a terminal illness to apply, on the recommendation of their treating doctor to the NSW Department of Health, for a card that would exempt them and their carers from prosecution for possession of 15 grams or less of crude cannabis. “People who are dying should not have to also face the fear of prosecution for

The marijuana leaf became a symbol of popular culture and by the 1990’s its recreational use was largely associated with youth culture also. According to the Australia Department of Health one third of Australians (6.5 million) have tried the drug at least once in their lifetime. About one in 10 have used it in the past year and of those, 16 per cent of people said they used it every day. But over the decades, most medical research has found that cannabis use can lead to schizophrenia, respiratory problems and cognitive impairment. Its therapeutic affects are also well documented and in the shadows of its unsavoury reputation, the debate for legalising medicinal cannabis has been bubbling along. But it seems that NSW is ready to have an educated debate about the merits of medicinal cannabis. Last year a NSW parliamentary inquiry found that medicinal cannabis does have a place in society and last week, NSW Premier Mike Baird gave Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson the green light to prepare a bill legalising medicinal cannabis. “The Premier was sympathetic and listened intently while I explained the issue to him and the circumstances surrounding my decision to try and change the laws,” Mr Anderson said. “However the Premier joined with me in expressing grave concerns about the supply and the prescription of cannabis and the challenge in addressing those issues. It would need to be through a tightly controlled and regulated process.” Mr Baird said he would consider the bill carefully. “I support the efforts of any Liberals and Nationals member who wishes to prepare a bill for consideration by the Government. We will give careful consideration to Mr Anderson’s bill,” Mr Baird said. The announcement has been warmly received by Greens MP John Kaye, who has also been drafting a bill to legalise medicinal cannabis. “It is time for policy driven by compassion and science, not hysteria and prejudice,” he said. “Last year’s cross-party Upper House inquiry responded to the evidence with a proposal that was cautious and limited. “It carefully avoids any possibility of

using a drug that relieves some of their pain and suffering,” Mr Kaye said. “The tide is turning on medicinal cannabis.” Nepean Greens member, Shane Gorman, is in full support of the drug’s medicinal use and recently spoke at parliament house on the issue. “The Greens are not pushing for the drug to be legalised for recreational use, there are no proposed changes to NSW drug laws,” he said. “However, what a new bill on medicinal cannabis would do is allow patients with terminal cancer and AIDs, among other diseases, to have the opportunity to access a powerful pain killer that would allow them to spend their final weeks at home and not in a hospital ward away

Penrith Naturopath John Miller-Crispe “It’s much harder to smoke a liquid,” he said. He said that the supply of hemp seeds, which is currently illegal in Australia, should also be revised.
Nepean Greens member Shane Gorman “Hemp seeds are a great source of protein yet they are banned in Australia. You cannot grow cannabis from these seeds that has hallucinogens.” Mr Anderson said he is determined to
work with his parliamentary colleagues to find a suitable system to balance these concerns of the community. “It will be critical to get this bill right, “ he said.

from friends and family.” Mr Gorman said that there are groups in the community who want to see cannabis legalised for personal recreational use, but that the Greens had a more conservative stance. “This is about compassion. Currently, if you are caught in public with roughly less than 10 grams of cannabis you will likely receive a cannabis caution from police. Any more than that and you are looking at a fine and criminal record, or worse, possible drug supply charges,” Mr Gorman said. “Under our proposed system those with medical approval and supervision would be exempt from being prosecuted.” In Penrith for the year to December 2013, some 453 people were prosecuted for the use or possession of cannabis, up from 386 the year prior. Local Naturopath John Miller-Crispe is in favour of medicinal cannabis if a good system to control its supply can be devised. “If they are going to legalise medicinal cannabis as a pain killer, its availability should not be limited to terminally ill patients but those who have genuine pain,” he said. “It does not seem fair to rule out people based on the cause of their pain if we are going to introduce it as a pain killer. “At the same time, cannabis when smoked has detrimental affects and its supply would need to be very carefully monitored. “Many prescription drugs are easy to obtain legally but then sold on illegally.” Mr Miller-Crispe said research into administration methods such as a liquid extraction of the cannabis plant might hold the key to curbing illegal supply.

COVER STORY
British India shed the shackles of their punk past Not afraid to experiment, Aussie band British India are looking forward to recording their latest album, but not before playing to fans at Penrith’s Tattersalls Hotel
T
hough the thought of a life without British India scares guitarist Nic Wilson he does have one idea for what he might do if the band ever fell
apart. “I’m sort of interested in films and film making. I’m not sure exactly what I’d do, maybe wedding videos,” he joked. KATE REID @kate_reid6
“I’ve got to get a card, that’s what I’ve got to do. ‘Nic Wilson, Wedding Videographer’.” There’s not much chance he will be moving into the wedding industry anytime soon though. It’s been eight years since the indie rock band released their first music video for ‘Black and White Radio’ and since then there’s been four albums, countless singles and plenty of radio play. British India have also gained a reputation for their intense touring schedules. You won’t find many articles on these guys that don’t mention the phrase ‘hardest working band in Australia’. “I don’t know how much truth there is to that, because it doesn’t feel like work to us,” Wilson said. “I think we all go a little bit mad if we’re left at home for too long. We love playing live and also, I mean there’s an obvious sort of state of affairs with music sales these days that a lot of our income comes from playing live not from records anymore. But that’s not the main motivation, it’s just a good one.” Wilson also attributes this love for life on the road as one of the reasons the band has remained successful for all these years – which anyone trying to make a life in the arts will tell you is no mean feat. “I think a lot of it has to do with how much we tour. Like going to places where people generally don’t, or don’t think to. There’s nowhere too far away or too small for us to go to,” he said. “By going to those places you find people who genuinely have never heard of the band but will just go for the sake of going out and you go and play those shows and you give it your best and that’s how you make new fans. “I think that’s the way we’ve been able to do it for eight years, just going out and finding new fans, and new generations of fans is the other thing. There’s always someone turning 18 every year.” British India’s back catalogue includes their debut album ‘Guillotine’ which was released in 2007 and won them the AIR Award for ‘Best New Independent Artist’ followed by ‘Thieves’ in 2008, which spawned the singles ‘I Said I’m Sorry’ and ‘God is Dead, Meet The Kids’. The band’s third album ‘Avalanche’ debuted in the

Top 10 on the Aria charts. Three years after the release of ‘Avalanche’ came British India’s most recent release, ‘Controller’. That time between albums wasn’t easy for the band, Wilson admits. “British India was sort of starting to lose its way a little bit and when it came down to it, it was like ‘are we going to do this or not?’ When it finally came time to put the album together it came together really well and it had our biggest song to date. We were against the ropes and we sort of came out of it smiling so we’re all quite proud of the success of ‘Controller’,” he said. Since their first album, the band’s sound has inevitably evolved, broadening their punk roots in the process. “I think the biggest change is that we’re not as embarrassed to try stuff now, like I don’t think the onus is to always just be a punk band with a punk mentality. We’re a bit older and wiser and feeling a bit deeper about things and less ashamed to try a keyboard line or even a song about more weighty emotional things. (We’re) not as callous as we once were,” Wilson said. After their current tour, which has seen them playing gigs consistently since the start of the year, the band will be heading to Germany to record their new album, which they are hoping to have released by the end of the year. Followed, of course, by a tour in 2015, with the band planning to get some international dates in as well.
“So, that’s sort of the long-term goal at the moment, just an album, tour and have a look overseas,” Wilson said. So after eight years and much success what is Wilson’s advice to those trying to follow in British India’s footsteps? “Our advice is always write – just write, write, write, write. You can never write enough. The key to all this stuff at the end of the day is good songs and getting those songs on the radio, because without things like Triple J the music scene in this country would be a disaster because that’s the only way you can really get songs out to the masses,” he said. “I mean one of the reasons that we can go out and play these little places is because of Triple J going out to every pocket of Australia and being able to get two or three songs on the radio every year. You know that’s the key to it, you have just got to keep writing and putting your best foot forward with songs.” With the new album and touring plans there is no sign of British India slowing down but Wilson hopes when it does all come to an end their legacy is simple. “Just being remembered as a tough working, touring band would be nice, but as I said just to be remembered at all would be sweet.” British India will be playing at Penrith’s Tattersalls Hotel on June 13, 2014 at 8pm. Tickets are $25. For more information visit www.britishindia.com.au.

Technology shown in a new wintery light The latest offering from Penrith Regional Gallery will get you thinking...
ewest exhibition ‘Winter Light’ will bring together an eclectic mix of local, Australian and international artists at Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest. The contemporary art exhibit will run until Sunday, August 24 and includes work from American artist Bill Viola. This pioneer in the world of video art has consistently explored themes around technology, sensory perception and the human experience. With a career spanning five decades, Viola is known for his experimentation with new technologies, being one of the first artists to use computer editing in his art. His later work has explored themes such as time, human emotion, consciousness, birth and death. Art group Island6 will also be part of the Winter Light exhibit. Established in Shanghai in 2006 this group of artists,

curators, art directors, tech-geeks and writers use the skills of the individual members to create electronic art that explores city life in Shanghai, including a focus on its characters, myths and sights. They bring together the old and new using traditional media such as collage and painting along with more recent technology. Collectively their work has been exhibited across the globe, including Louis Vuitton Cultural Space, Taipei and Macao; Red Gate Gallery, Beijing and Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, Washington. Representing the Australian contingent of the exhibit is abstract artist Sydney Ball who explores the world of colour. And there’s artist James Cant’s work from the 1940’s to the 1970’s where he explored surrealism, realism and cubism. There will also be ‘Colour and Light’ in the Lewers Learning Centre, which allows visitors an interactive experience with the chance to explore the dynamic elements of colour and light. This exhibition will include works by Margo Lewers, Ivy Jean, Paula Garrard, Al Munro, Adam Jones and Jo Newton. With the ‘Winter Light’ exhibit running for the next few months there’s plenty of time to head along to Lewers for some amazing contemporary art in the beautiful gallery grounds enjoyed with a stop at their delightful cafe. ‘Winter Light’ will be on at Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest until Sunday, August 24. The gallery is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Entry is free. For more information call 4735 1100 or visit www.penrithregionalgallery.org.
Chelsea Handler calls it a day The ABC’s revived show ‘Spicks and Specks’ is in crisis with the public broadcaster planning to pull it from Wednesday nights due to poor ratings. It’s understood two more episodes will air before it’s a goner. It was always going to be a tough sell to match the great job Adam Hills did all those years ago. The ABC plan to air the remaining episodes later in the year.
A new Foxtel channel will launch on August 3 called BBC First. The new channel will launch with all 10 episodes of ‘The Musketeers’ from 9.30am. BBC First will air a lot of ‘binge’ television, which is air entire seasons in one hit across the day. Other shows to air on BBC First include: ‘Peaky Blinders’, ‘The Politician’s Husband’, ‘Burton and Taylor’ and ‘Alan Partridge’.
Fans of axed US comedy ‘Community’ will be delighted to hear the show may come back to our screens after all. Digital platform, Hulu, is in talks with Sony Pictures TV to produce more episodes. But discussions are in the very early stages.
Edgy talk show queen, Chelsea Handler, will end her long running E! show ‘Chelsea, Lately’ on August 26. Her seven-year run will finish with a one hour episode following a month of celebration episodes. Chelsea is in talks to do other things away from late night TV.
Prepare to stay indoors because ‘Sharknado 2’ is just around the corner. The new movie will have its global premiere on July 31. ‘Sharknado 2’ will this time be based in New York and include most of the original cast (that didn’t get eaten by sharks!). I don’t even know what to say about this one!
Basketball fans rejoice because the ABC has signed a huge deal to air the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup and FIBA World Championship for Women for the first time. All Boomers and Opals games will screen live and in full on ABC2 from Sunday, August 31. ABC will also air men’s USA games.

12 YEARS A SLAVE RATED M
Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Brad Pitt and Lupita Nyong’o ‘12 Years a Slave’ is based on the memoir of Solomon Northup. Northup was a free man who was born in New York state but was kidnapped in 1841 in Washington D.C. and sold as a slave. The film tells the story of his life working on plantations in Louisiana. Throughout the years Northup comes into contact with people who showed him the best and the worst of the human condition – from his cruel owner played by Michael Fassbender to the kindness he finds in a Canadian abolitionist played by Brad Pitt. Northup’s fight for freedom lasts 12 long years as he is sold from slave master to slave master. This is a powerful film and while dealing with issues like slavery is never easy, ‘12 Years a Slave’ doesn’t shy away from showing audiences the harsh reality of what life is like without freedom. The film has received much critical acclaim, earning Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
EDGE OF TOMORROW RATED M Starring: Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt
JACK WHITE LAZARETTO Out Now
In this sci-fi thriller the world is yet again under attack from an alien race and it’s up to Tom Cruise to save the day. This time the invaders are known as ‘Mimics’ for their ability to mimic human combat abilities, making defeating the visiting creatures an almost impossible task. Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, an officer who lacks combat training but is forced into battle to defend the earth. Things don’t go so well and Cage’s lack of battle experience results in his almost immediate death. But that’s not the end of the story. Cage is thrown into a time-loop, giving him the chance to battle and be defeated by the Mimics over and over again, learning more and more about them and developing his combat skills in the process. He is helped by Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) who has managed to kill more Mimics than any other fighter. Together Cage and Vrataski are the key to understanding the Mimics and saving planet Earth. ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ is directed by Doug Liman, who is best known for the films ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’.
Jack White is regarded by many people as a musical genius. It’s no surprise really when you look at his back catalogue. While White is probably best known for his role in the duo ‘The White Stripes’ along with now former wife Meg White, this doesn’t even scratch the surface of his career in the music industry. His newest release, ‘Lazaretto’ is the second solo project for White following on from the critically acclaimed 2012 release ‘Blunderbuss’. And ‘Lazaretto’ is another amazing album from the king of left of centre. Title track ‘Lazaretto’ is more of what White did so well on ‘Blunderbuss’, with his signature vocals and guitar work; it’s rock’n’roll with a slight groove. ‘High Ball Stepper’ is a gritty instrumental song; guitar heavy and laced with piano flourishes. There’s so much to love about this track; even the most die hard lyric fans won’t pay much attention to the lack of words. The instruments say everything that needs to be said. White loves to explore different sounds through his music so while there might not be a set style you can rest assured that the album will be sexy, raw and slightly dark.

ide by side is an interesting new label from Brothers in Arms at Langhorne Creek in South Australia, and whose Metala Vineyard is one of the oldest in Australia – William Formby buying the property 130-odd years ago, and first planting grapes there in 1891. Today his great, great grandson, Guy Adams, is the fifth generation to live on and work Metala – side by side with his wife Liz, with the farm still side by side with the vineyard, and the vineyard in turn side by side with the winery. Little wonder they chose the name for their new label, recently releasing under it a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Shiraz and a Malbec, all nicely priced at $27 a bottle each. Their 2012 Malbec is a beauty, reflecting why Malbec is grown more in Langhorne Creek than any other Australian wine region. Fruit for this one came off vines planted 12 years ago, the resultant wine a lovely floral and fragrant style, and which, as Liz says, is simply made for foods, chargrilled meats being particularly suited to it. One to note: Lerida Estate in the Canberra District’s Lake George has released a ripper 2012 Chardonnay from a vintage that owner Jim Lumbers sums up as “simply magnificent”. This 2012 Lerida Chardonnay is a wonderfully fruitfilled, crisp and mouth-filling wine that epitomises just why Chardonnay is the world’s most-appreciated white wine. Pay $24.50 and match it with roast chicken with a rosemary stuffing or white fish.

s road users are well aware, there are numerous safety issues involved with using your mobile phone while driving, along with major penalties including loss of demerit points and fines. In fact, in NSW you are only legally allowed to make a call or receive a call on your mobile phone if the phone is fixed in a secure mounting or the car has a handsfree device. If the police do catch you driving whilst on the phone, you face a fine of $304 and three demerit points and if it’s in a school zone the fine is increased to $405 and four demerit points. To keep drivers safe and legal, Strike, one of the leading providers of Bluetooth car technology, has produced an advanced mobile phone cradle, the Alpha Cradle. The Strike Alpha Cradle is compliant with road laws; engineered, designed and manufactured in Australia and is compatible with virtually any Bluetooth car kits. The cradle will allow you to keep your phone battery going strong all day with a 2 Amp output, making it a superior cradle phone charger. It also comes with voltage spike protection to keep you safe while charging. Users will be able to stay in touch, even in rural areas, as the Alpha cradle can be linked to an external antenna through its unique FME male connector.

A fashion statement or objectification? KATHERINE TWEED
life & style
checking him out when he’s wearing a top like that... I wonder if he’d feel awkward when other men gawk at him? In addition to it being a pretty stupid concept, I also thought it was strange that this trend in men’s clothing isn’t translated to women’s clothing – why aren’t women walking around with naked men on their shirts? In the same way that I searched for naked woman t-shirts, I looked up “naked man on t-shirt”, and it took some serious snooping around to find anything of the sort, with most of them the kind of thing you find at a hen’s party. I asked a couple of the men I know why they would consider buying a shirt with a naked woman on it and their answers were pretty standard; ‘it looked cool’ or ‘I didn’t think about it’ – typical man answers if you ask me. I have heard some of these particular designs described as both ‘art’ and ‘objectification’. The idea of banning them has been thrown around but unsurprisingly has never been talked of seriously. But should we accept this as fashion? Is it fashion or the objectification of women?
katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_
Why is it that we don’t see women’s shirts with naked man prints?
This week whilst innocently browsing around the local shopping centre, I was confronted by a naked woman. Now, when I say confronted I don’t mean that a physical naked woman came up to me in a hostile manner, in fact, she wasn’t even there in the flesh, but that didn’t make the experience less confronting. Being female, I have never really paid much attention to the menswear section of my favourite shops. Sure, I glance through the images of designers’ new menswear collections and note new trends each season but I have never let menswear trends affect me to a large extent. My relationship with women’s fashion is hands-on and very different to my relationship with men’s fashion, which is purely about appreciating it from a distance – admiring a well dressed man or an expertly designed suit. But what I don’t love – and certainly don’t admire – is seeing men walk around in t-shirts depicting images that wouldn’t be shown on television before 10pm, if at all, and are only found deep in the folds of those magazines that are censored at the petrol station. If I wanted to see nude women, I would find myself the means to do so. Until this week, I had no idea that naked pictures on t-shirts was seen as normal and since I first came face to face with it, I have not stopped noticing it. A quick Google search for “naked girl on t-shirt” came up with thousands of results, many that were censored from the online shopping websites – all the proof I needed to confirm that men wearing X-rated t-shirts is in fact a ‘thing’. Not only do I find the idea inappropriate and tacky, although I can understand if it is a famous female, I find it just plain stupid. Obviously a man is going to purchase a shirt because he likes the image for himself but unless he hangs it on his bedroom walls, he isn’t likely to have time to bask in the beauty of the naked woman on his shirt, especially when he is wearing it. Now, if he bought it so that other people would look at it, fair enough, but I hate to say it, I can’t imagine many girls would be

Should you buy diamonds online? Over the last year or two I have noticed changes within the jewellery industry. I hear it often via friends in the trade that they are competing with online ‘wholesale’ companies in regards to clients looking to purchase a diamond, in most cases for an engagement ring. This seems to be quite common when it comes down to price as the determining factor. Online companies obviously have much lower overheads than a business owner with a shop front, workshop, jewellers and retail staff. But is that the only reason these diamonds appear to be cheaper? You may have friends who know someone who has purchased their diamond online. How was their experience? Was there an experience? Were they truly 110 per cent happy with the finished product once it arrived? And was there any ongoing relationship or service once they received their ring? At the end of the day yes, a diamond is a diamond. However, no two diamonds are the same and purchasing something that you will be wearing for the rest of your life mustn’t be taken lightly. Buyers often think that they are comparing apples to apples, the same diamond to another seemly identical diamond and can’t see why the price may differ. The truth is that there are many factors involved when comparing stones, some that only a true diamond professional would know, which is why I feel that it’s very important to trust who you are buying from and be able to look at and touch the stone in question. You’re not wearing a certificate; you’re wearing a piece of symbolic jewellery. A good way to look at this is like buying a car, or a house. You may be looking at two cars, one is slightly higher in price than the other, though they both look great on paper. What happens when you open the door or pop the hood? It can be a very different story and the difference in price is often very warranted. My top tip: Take the time to educate yourself and buy from a trusted jeweller – one that you can actually visit and handle the goods. One that will be there when you need to go back and visit for repairs, maintenance and future purchases. At York Jewellers we are proudly celebration our 40th year as a trusted jeweller and love seeing our clients come back!

HOROSCOPES

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Ambitious Aquarius – do you fantasise about upsizing your lifestyle? Friday’s Full Moon stimulates your hopes and wishes zone but make sure you have the cold, hard cash to finance your super-sized dreams. In the current economic climate, small and sustainable is the sensible way to live. Expect family problems or workplace friction.
PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Have you been procrastinating Pisces? With this week’s Full Moon lighting up your work zone, you need to shake up your daily routine and be bold and brave as you plan your future career path. If you have the confidence to listen to your intuition, you’ll be one step ahead of the professional pack!
ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
JOANNE MADELINE MOORE
Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro. tumblr.com www.twitter.com/ JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2014.
Express your individuality! Friday’s Full Moon aspects put an extra bounce in your step and a glint in your eye, as you initiate projects with passion and enthusiasm. Be inspired by birthday great Judy Garland: “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” But Saturday’s Mars/Pluto square amps up your bossy, assertive side.
Lions can be very vain creatures. There’s nothing wrong with looking good, but don’t make it your main focus. Look deeper to find the real beauty within. Reflect on the wise words of Michael J. Fox: “One of the things I’ve learned is that vanity is worthless. Whatever you look like is such a complete and utter waste of time.”
Star predictions for the week beginning June 8
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Retrograde Mercury continues to regurgitate unresolved issues, and it will take patience and persistence to work your way through the long list. Friday’s Full Moon fires up your home zone, so it’s not the ideal time to get the long lost relatives together for a reunion, or to bring up sensitive issues with fractious family members.
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
You have a strong desire to communicate via activities like teaching, public speaking, serious study, intense discussions or neighbourhood negotiations. But (with Mercury retrograde, and Venus opposing Saturn) don’t be dismayed if people misinterpret the message you are trying to convey. Be patient Libra! Others will eventually come to appreciate your point of view.
SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Issues involving your finances could come to a head over the coming week. If your money is tied up with someone else (either personally or professionally) then make sure you adopt a conservative approach and keep the lines of communication open. Friday’s Venus/ Saturn opposition pours cold water on a close relationship.
You’re set for a tricky week, as Venus opposes Saturn in your sign and Mars squares Pluto (your ruling planet). When it comes to close relationships, expect anything from fiery confrontations to stony silences. Friday’s Full Moon magnifies money matters and selfesteem issues. Have confidence in your inner worth.
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Geminis are the grandmasters of distraction, but avoiding responsibilities won’t work this week. And with your ruling planet Mercury in retrograde mode until July 1, you need to apply the brain brakes and think carefully before you speak. Otherwise you’ll say the wrong thing at the wrong time, and unintentionally upset others.
With Friday’s Full Moon falling in your sign, your positive Sagittarian traits are amplified and so are your negative ones. Aim to be generous, gregarious and optimistic (rather than bossy, belligerent and impatient). Attached Archers – Saturn favours stability in relationships, as you focus on solving problems rather than running away!
CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
This week’s stars shine a bright spotlight on power issues within a major relationship. You both need to cool down and compromise, otherwise the emotional tug-of-war will just continue. Single Crabs – have you been looking for love in all the obvious places? Pluto encourages you to be more subtle and strategic.
In your desire to get ahead this week, you’re likely to arouse intense opposition. Avoid the temptation to boss others around, as it will only make matters worse. Take a chill pill Capricorn! Instead, try channelling your excess energy into regular physical exercise. Activities like golf, jogging, biking, hiking and rock climbing suit you.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION
JEFF PHILLIPS Not all martial arts are for self defence
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
Top three tips for good health? Aside from the obvious: 1. Get educated! Make sure the information you are following is from a reliable source. 2. Listen to your body, you know it better than your trainer. 3. Don’t neglect your mental health! Do things that you enjoy and surround yourself with positive people!
are designed to deal with the violence you see on the news daily. For a system to be effective for self defence it needs to address everything from knife and pistol threats, psychology of violence, legalities of self defence, multiple attackers and more. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Krav Maga works your entire body yet has the purpose of enhancing your self defence skills, security and self confidence. You’re getting fit and learning invaluable skills at the same time. I play basketball as I can chase a ball all day but put me on a treadmill and you lose me in seconds! Everyone needs to do some form of resistance training. A daily ‘must do’? Go to sleep each night knowing that you bettered yourself in some way. Biggest health/fitness misconception? That all forms of martial arts or combat sports are good for self defence. Martial arts teach you an ancient art form and culture that is great exercise and discipline but is irrelevant for counter violence in today’s world. Same with sports fighting, even though they may have skills that may be useful, they only address a fraction of what’s needed. There are however some exceptions to the rule. Krav Maga and Combatives
How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? I don’t like to lose! Some say I’m too competitive! I am my biggest critic. If I get lazy I imagine my competition working harder than me so that spurs me on in whatever I do. I never go into a competition unprepared and leave no stone unturned!
life & style
How does fitness feature in your life? I am the head instructor at Western Sydney Krav Maga and Combatives as well as the owner of P5 Sports Performance gym at Penrith Sports Stadium. I have always played sports at a reasonably high level and wanted to become the best possible athlete I could be. So in 1996 I completed my fitness instructor certification and later that year commenced a sports science degree. I also completed an education degree and have worked as a Physical Education teacher for adult education, secondary and primary schools for the past 15 years. I have managed fitness centres, coached countless sporting teams and individuals and have been employed as a self defence instructor since 2000 designing programs for corporations and schools. I have completed close to 100 courses relating to coaching/training/fitness/health over the years and continue to study and seek best practice.

People cannot be forced to eat well and live well, they must choose to
Friday 6 June 2014 the western weekender • west life
This week’s column is a letter a Doctor wrote in... What makes us healthy? Accepting responsibility for our exclusive control over our own body, also the flow on effect of our choices to others. I have sat down with patients and their family to talk about these things that make them healthy. I have explained the repercussions of poor lifestyle choices, such as having to be in my office talking about their health, or lack of. I have seen them walk out with nodding smiles and their assurances changes for the better will take place. Far too often though, sometime later I have seen the same family waiting outside a room that now contains the lifeless body of their father or brother or daughter. There are no more smiles. No more “I’ll be alrights”. Only now do they realise the amount of control they had over their state of health. At least those still alive that is. The medical profession loves giving everything a name and it seems we have a name for this one. Sedentary Death Syndrome. It is responsible for millions of deaths a year. So how does one catch this insidious disease? Choose to have it! It is entirely preventable. Yet people choose to succumb to it and let others around them witness their slow demise. People cannot be forced to exercise or eat well, certainly not long term. What can make us healthy may be as simple as looking around and seeing our family or friends or 100 other good things we have and deciding to want these things so much, that anything which helps us experience them for a few years longer, is not a chore but a gift. Your column last week mentioned ‘I don’t make time’ would be more accurate for the people claiming they don’t ‘have’ time. It is definitely the conscious choice and state of mind that is failing, well before the body fails. But at any moment we all have the potential to decide; I want to live well, vibrant and active, radiating energy that influences others. We all have this power of choice between two completely different paths. What makes us healthy? Choosing wisely.

Part 3: Prepare your dog for a newborn
Spending too long in the toilet cubicle?
For the last few weeks we have been discussing children and dogs. Last week’s article was about preparing puppies for a happy long term relationship with children. It’s great when puppies and kids grow together but sometimes we are faced with the situation of introducing babies around adult dogs. This week we will discuss preparing the adult dog for a new baby. The first thing to consider is the dog’s temperament; any type of aggressive or fearful behaviour – even if mild or subtle (such as growling or pricking ears back) should be addressed by a professional (such as a veterinary behaviourist) well before the baby arrives. Some thought should be given to preparing the family dog before the arrival of the new baby. Dogs are likely to become anxious if the routine, environment or the way the family interacts with the dog changes. Therefore, gradual adjustments should be made before the baby arrives. Feeding, exercise, play schedules as well as sleeping/resting areas and any new routines/ rules will need to be slowly introduced well ahead of the baby’s arrival. This gives time for the dog to adjust to the changes and also time for you to train your dog. It is important that your training focuses on positive reinforcement – this means rewarding good behaviour and ignoring bad behaviour. So if you are trying to train your dog that the baby room is off limits, it is important to ignore the dog when it decides to go into the baby room and reward the dog with treats and attention when it decides to explore other rooms of the house. If the family is consistent with their responses, the dog should quickly learn those behaviours that are rewarded and those that are not. The dog should also be prepared for the homecoming by exposing him/her to the noises and smells of the new baby. If the dog becomes frightened or anxious when it hears strange sounds, a recording of baby noises can be used as a part of a desensitisation and counterconditioning program. This may involve playing the noises at very low volume and giving the dog treats and slowly increasing the volume over a matter of weeks. A towel or blanket with the babies scent can also be taken home to prepare the pet.
We are currently seeing a lot of people suffering from constipation. A majority of this is simple lifestyle factors, which relates to the cooler weather and shorter days. With this in mind, you can manage these changes just by being aware. Constipation is the passing of hard, dry bowel motions (stools) that may be infrequent or difficult to pass. It’s a very uncomfortable condition that you don’t want to experience! The most common cause of constipation we see is due to slight dehydration. In the warmer months, we dehydrate faster and therefore experience or anticipate thirst more often. As a result, we are in the habit of drinking more. Also, in the cooler months, we enjoy warm drinks, which require more preparation than a cold drink. The result is our bodies draw fluids from the bowel, which can lead to constipation. Our environment is also drier, heating and warm air conditioning is drying, therefore exacerbating the problem. Outside, the cold nights result in a heavy dew and also drier air. If you enjoy a walk in the morning or evening, make sure you drink when you finish. Generally speaking, you should monitor how much you drink and look to maintain close to the 2 litres a day mark. The cooler and shorter days result in less activity and changes in our routine. Our bodies love to move and our digestive system works best when we are upright and moving. Simply walking at lunchtime will help and it is great way to top up your Vitamin D levels. The increased incidence of colds and flu also is a factor influencing possible constipation. As well as decreased fluid intake and activity, medication can cause constipation. Decreased food intake results in less bulk in the digestive tract and a slowing of the passage of food. Maintaining your fluid intake will also help your recovery from the illness. If the problem persists, seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

don’t like to be told how to live our lives but God does so to help us
Do you find yourself running into pigs? A bloke called Frank Muir tells this story. You may’ve heard it. “I was driving down the street, enjoying the drive, when suddenly around the corner, came an old Leyland 1100. It was on the wrong side of the road, weaving everywhere. It missed my car by the smallest margin. It was being driven by a woman. As it lurched past, the woman poked her head out the window, screaming at me, “PIG!” I drove on thinking to myself, “Typical!” and as I turned the corner I ran smack, bang, into the pig!” It’s easy to think the worst of people, making wrong conclusions, especially when people are trying to warn us. It’s also easy to do that with God. Some people don’t like God telling us how to live and what to do. We can be like the child, who stamps their foot and shouts, “You can’t tell me what to do!” We want to live our life our way. Yet God is just trying to stop us running into pigs. His guidelines for living are designed so we can live life to the full and not mess it up. In the New Testament book of John, Jesus says, “I have come so that they may live, and have to the full.” He continues, “I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me… I lay down my life for the sheep… they will listen to my voice.” Have you been running into pigs lately? Why not follow the guidelines of the one who created life. Listen to his voice as he speaks to us from the Bible. You will find your life changed!

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS
Lions congregate
I
n the lead up to the annual Lions Club management change-over, local Lions Club members joined around 50 others from the Sydney region for a special training
forum. The two-day training forum, recently held in Newcastle, is an annual meeting inviting representatives from nearly 80 Lions Clubs to discuss the future of the clubs.
“The forum is held annually prior to the change-over of District Governors in July. It provides an opportunity for new and current representatives to meet and discuss projects and aims for the coming year,” said a Lions representative. Come change-over, Penrith’s Barry Leavett-Brown will be named Chairperson for Zone 19, which encompasses the Penrith, Emu Plains, Cambridge Park and Mt Druitt Clubs. Barry is always in
the community helping out with the latest fundraising initiative. And the past year has been a busy one for local clubs, which have raised thousands of dollars collectively for local organisations and initiatives, as well as global causes. It is expected that the year following the change-over will be just as prosperous for the local area as the Lions Club continues to be one of the largest community service movements in the world.
A survey of more than a thousand Australians has shown that baby boomers are our first generation to rate companionship higher than government assistance. Red Cross conducted the survey and found that baby boomers not only expect to live longer, but they plan to live in their own homes with a partner well into their eighties, and want regular visits and phone calls. A third of all people over 55 (31 per cent), would prefer a regular visitor over extra assistance from government, or access to a retirement community. The survey also shows friends and family can’t always be relied on to stay in touch. Nearly half of the survey respondents (44 per cent) admit they do not ring an elderly friend or relative more than once a month; and 22 per cent said they never ring an older friend or relative at all. Red Cross Chief Executive, Robert Tickner said there’s a growing desire for older people to stay at home. The Red Cross runs a number of programs such as a phone service to make sure that seniors keep in touch.

Bryan Blake ONE OF the most patient seniors of Penrith would have to be Vice President of the Penrith Valley Seniors Computing Club, Bryan Blake. Mr Blake has been running the Computing Club at the Penrith Valley Seniors Citizens Centre for five years and says while the job certainly has its moments, he still loves every bit of it. “I enjoy helping the locals, it can get slightly frustrating at times, but it’s all part of it. I’m glad I can pass the knowledge I have onto them,” he said. The 66-year-old began life as a cartographer or mapmaker where he’d create a variety of maps by hand until the day computers started taking over the world. “I used to hand draw everything but when computers started becoming more popular I was forced from pen and ink to keyboards,” Mr Blake said. These days Mr Blake looks after 70 members of the local Computing Club. WW9913

Savvy seniors are flocking to social media in droves KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_
eniors previously thought to be computer illiterate are now proving they have what it takes to keep up with the social-media world. The fourth annual ‘Yellow Social Media Report’, conducted by Sensis, suggests that millions of Australian seniors are joining social media networks for the first time. Almost 60 per cent of internet users aged 50 to 64 are now using social media, a six per cent increase from last year, while almost one third of those online over 65-years-old use social media, compared to 24 per cent last year. “We are seeing not only the evolution of communication, but also of relationships. The demographics of social media are shifting. Younger people are fast adopting new platforms while older people are now

rapidly getting in on the act. It’s a major shift,” said Kelly Brough, Chief Digital Officer at Sensis. Of the 69 per cent of people using social media, 46 per cent use a networking site at least once a day. “Social media has really infiltrated every aspect of our day-to-day lives. We’re using it to keep in touch with friends and family particularly while we travel, to share photos and videos, to organise social activities, and to access the latest news as it happens. There’s also a big trend for parents moving online to keep an eye on what their kids are up to,” she said. According to the report, it is the wide variety of services social media give the public access to that draws people online. “A growing number of users look for reviews, discounts and offers online before they make purchases from businesses, particularly from small and medium sized firms. This is why we see a growing number of firms using social media to reach customers,” she said. “Those that do not use it are missing out on an opportunity to grow their businesses. Businesses that do are a step ahead. The research shows they experience higher sales, better performance and profitability.”

either extraordinary – or wonderfully ordinary – stories that will touch the hearts of Australians everywhere,” a spokesperson said. The competition costs just $50 to enter, with all funds going straight to Barnardos, and the winner will receive agency representation from renowned literary agent Selwa Anthony as well as a print, eBook and audio book publishing contract. “By launching this initiative we hope to encourage reading, recognise great Australian stories and at the same time serve to support our most vulnerable children,” the representative said.
