Nothing can stop Stevens rocking KATE REID @kate_reid6

J

on Stevens has enjoyed plenty of variety throughout his music career. Starting out as a pop star in his native New Zealand in the 70’s, the talented musician has gone on to be the lead singer of one of Australia’s biggest rock acts, ‘Noiseworks’, spend three years fronting ‘INXS’, enjoy a successful solo career and in recent years has been focused on his newest project ‘The Dead Daisies’, working with the likes of Slash and members of Guns N’ Roses, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones and Cold Chisel. “It’s a classic rock band,” Jon says of The Dead Daisies. “It’s been very exciting to work with a lot of international guys. “They’re just great guys, all been around long enough and we’re all old and ornery enough to not want to hang out with dickheads, you know what I mean,” he laughed. Audiences will have the chance to see Jon perform his solo acoustic show when he hits the stage at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, February 13. It’s a part of the country where Jon feels very much at home, with support from audiences allowing him to continue doing what he loves. “It’s the west. They’ve always been very supportive of Australian music,” he said. “I’ve always had great experiences playing out in those places in many different incarnations. “I guess the thing is to still be playing and still doing what you love is, it’s great fun. “Especially in this day and age, where it’s the day and age of push play. I love just getting out there and playing acoustic and keeping it real.” Reflecting on his solo acoustic work, along with his time in some of Australia’s

biggest rock acts, Jon admits that it’s hard to choose which style he prefers. “You know I love doing the acoustic thing because you can’t hide up there,” he said. “You tend to be a lot more relaxed and interact with the audience on a more intimate level. “[But] when you’re at the front of a band and it’s just rocking and lights and everything’s going on and it’s all mad energy, flailing drums and loud guitars, that’s fantastic too. “It’s fantastic if the joint’s packed and everyone’s losing their mind. It’s a real energetic thing.” It was this love for rock music and his skills as a frontman that saw Jon join INXS in 2000, taking on the position made famous by the late, great Michael Hutchence. “I joined at their lowest point,” Jon explains. “They were about to call it a day and they didn’t want to but they didn’t know really what to do. “I’d been friends with those guys for years, I’d known them all from the 80’s. So there’s a lot of history there and we certainly sort of trod the same boards, so when I was called to work with them it was just to do a one off gig but the gig was so awesome [laughs] that everyone just got really excited and we just kept playing and all of a sudden it was three and a half years later and we’d toured all around the world. “It was a great experience. I love that band, I love their music.” Along with his busy music schedule – which includes working on a new Noiseworks album, solo projects and a US tour with The Dead Daisies in the second half of the year – Jon is also a supporter of the Heart Foundation after a health scare in 2009 resulted in open heart surgery. “They said I was the luckiest person around because I wouldn’t have lasted the weekend because my left ventricle was 99.9 per cent blocked and I was about to drop dead but I didn’t know it,” he said.

“I was a ticking time bomb and about to go off and it was just one of those things where I guess it just wasn’t my time. “I remember just lying in the hospital, I was in there for a month and I nearly died twice actually, but somehow made it through and I’m just so grateful because I lost my parents when I was young and

I’m just so grateful that I’m around to be involved in my kids’ lives. Since 2009 every day is a blessing.” Jon Stevens will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, February 13. Tickets are $35. For more information or to make a booking visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au or call 9625 5500.

ome March artist Sarah Goffman will be working on an art installation at the Penrith Regional Gallery that shows the impact of consumption, waste, excess and community generosity. The exhibit, titled ‘City of Plenty’, will see Goffman spend the month constructing a city in the main gallery using household consumables and non-perishable food items. After the exhibit closes on Sunday, March 29 the items will be donated to OzHarvest and Penrith Community Kitchen to be given to those in need. As part of the exhibit Penrith Regional Gallery will be collecting donations of household goods and waste along with non-perishable consumables like canned goods, cardboard boxes and buckets. If you’d like to contribute items to the exhibit, drop off stations will be set up from Tuesday, February 10 at Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith City Library, Penrith Community Kitchen and Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest. City of Plenty will be on at Penrith Regional Gallery from Sunday, March 1 to Sunday, March 29. For more information visit www. penrithregionalgallery.org or call 4735 1100.

LIVE MUSIC

Cohen almost gave it all away STEPHEN BISSET

J

ust three years ago, Adam Cohen – son of iconic Canadian songwriter Leonard Cohen – contemplated bowing out of the music business completely. “I was just disillusioned,” Cohen told West Life during a whistle-stop Australian promo tour. “I had released two albums (1998’s ‘Adam Cohen’ and 2004’s French language record ‘Mélancolista’) and I guess I became disillusioned with the whole process. I took too many punches in the face.” Thankfully, Cohen’s self-imposed retirement turned out to be just a hiatus and he returned, reinvigorated and reinspired to deliver his beautiful ‘Like A Man’ set in 2012 and his fifth album ‘Home’ which is the focus of Cohen’s upcoming Australian tour that will see him take to The Hydro Majestic stage next month. “You know what? I’m here in Melbourne right now and it’s such a beautiful day and I’m more than excited to be coming

back down to make some music. I feel so very privileged to be able to do that,” Cohen said. After the success of ‘Like A Man’ – the album went gold in his native Canada – Cohen started work on the follow-up, only to scrap the entire thing mid-stream. “It was coming across like a guy who was just too eager trying to make an impression, you know? So I had to scrap it all,” he said. “It’s funny because my father has always had a ‘publish or perish’ attitude so he thought I was quite crazy, but even that’s a little ironic because it can take him, like, 10 years to write a song.” Starting again from scratch, with a limited budget and limited resources, Cohen retreated to two of his childhood homes – one in Montreal and one on the Greek Island of Hydra with his threepiece band and three-piece string section to start again with ‘Home’. ‘Home’ expands on the tenderness of ‘Like A Man’, still utilising the delicate tones of the nylon string guitar but tempered with deeper more complex arrangements that make the most of the strings and piano, making for a complex,

diverse and rich album. While lyrically, Cohen said the album centres on the relationship he has with his father and his seven-year-old son. “I just wanted to make the most honest and faithful album I could,’ he said. West Life has a double pass to see Adam Cohen at The Hydro Majestic on Wednesday, March 18 to give away. Tickets

Ê I told you it wouldn’t be long before good old Richard Reid got a new gig again. Since leaving ‘Today’ earlier this year, Reid has signed on with Channel Ten’s morning show ‘Studio 10’. He began his stint last week in a slightly different role that’s more interview focused rather than the usual two-minute entertainment report. Ê Channel Nine will premiere its much hyped series ‘Gallipoli’ this Monday, February 9. The big budget drama will air after ‘The Block’ with the first episode set to be a double. It will then air one episode a week after that. Ê Channel Ten’s new series ‘Shark Tank’ will premiere this Sunday, February 8 at 8pm. As a huge fan of the US version I really can’t wait for this show to start, I just hope us Aussies do it justice. ‘Shark Tank’ sees entrepreneurs and inventors pitching to five self-made multi-millionaires on the hunt for the next big idea.

WW15551

Ê ‘Survivor’ will launch its 30th season on GO! later this month, which will again be filmed in Nicaragua. The series will be titled ‘Survivor: Worlds Apart’ and will be built around the theme Blue Collar v White Collar v No

Collar. The cast features a corporate executive, postal worker, coconut salesman, oil driller and a YouTube star.

Ê Former cricketer Michael Slater has quit ‘The Footy Show’ after three years. I was never sold on a cricketer co-hosting a rugby league show so I’m not too upset he’s gone. It’s also been confirmed that Fatty Vautin will be back as always. Ê Channel Ten’s popular app Tenplay is now available on Apple TV featuring shows from Ten, ELEVEN and ONE. I’ve been an Apple TV viewer for years, so I was pleasantly surprised when the Tenplay app popped on my Apple TV screen last week. The app allows viewers to catch up on shows they may have missed. Now I just need Nine and Seven to also jump on the Apple train and I’m set. Ê The cast of Channel Ten’s ‘I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here’ was revealed on Sunday night, during its premiere. Perhaps the biggest surprise amongst the cast of Aussie TV personalities, sports stars and models was that of Maureen McCormack who played the fabulous Marcia Brady on ‘The Brady Bunch’. The show premiered with more than 1.2 million viewers nationally.

REVIEW W EI V E R

The Theory of Everything Rated: PG // KATE REID

‘The Theory Of Everything’ tells the story of English theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who was diagnosed with ALS, a form of Motor Neurone disease, at the age of 21. The central focus of the film is on Hawking’s physical decline and his personal life, in particular his relationship with first wife Jane, with whom he had three children. English actor Eddie Redmayne plays a seamless Hawking, beautifully portraying the intelligence and humour behind one of the world’s most well known scientific minds. The physicality of his performance is even more impressive, with Redmayne perfectly embodying Hawking’s decline, from the first initial signs of the disease to

CD

his progression to almost total paralysis and the loss of his voice after a bout of pneumonia. The film has been nominated for five Oscars, including Best Actor for Redmayne’s performance and Best Actress for Felicity Jones, who brings emotional depth to the role of the devoted wife Jane. Those hoping to explore Hawking’s work in the field of physics may be a little disappointed, but what the film lacks in science it more than makes up for in heart. Eddie Redmayne steals the show in this story of strength and perseverance.

Two Gallants

We Are Undone // KATE REID San Francisco folk rock duo Two Gallants – aka singer/guitarist Adam Stephens and drummer Tyson Vogel – are back with the new release ‘We Are Undone’, their fifth studio album and the follow up to 2012’s ‘The Bloom and the Blight’. The album is thick with bluesy, distorted guitar, particularly during title track and album opener ‘We Are Undone’. Though this guitar sound clearly drives the album there’s also plenty of variety. This is one of those albums that grows on you with each listen. It moves quickly from playful to folky and sexy, and it’s this variety that keeps things interesting. It’s no surprise that these guys have been together for more than a decade, they clearly have their sound down-pat. A solid release for those who love guitar driven bluesy folk rock. Give them a listen!

‘If I Stay’ is based on the novel of the same name by Gayle Forman but it could easily be confused as another Nicholas Sparks film adaptation, with its focus on love mixed with a healthy dose of tragedy. In this teen romance Mia Hall (Chloe Grace Moretz) is a talented cellist with

a promising music career ahead of her, a loving rocker boyfriend, Adam (Jamie Blackley) and a close-knit family, which includes younger brother Teddy and some very cool ex-punk rocker parents. Things seem to be going to plan until a car crash sends Mia into an out of body experience, forcing her to make the choice between living with the consequences of the accident or avoiding the pain and leaving everything behind. The film is clearly aimed at a young adult audience, though the family themes make it relatable to viewers of all ages. Moretz does a good job with what she’s given but unfortunately even with the addition of a supernatural aspect the film is still slightly clichéd and predictable. ‘If I Stay’ was directed by film maker R.J Cutler. Though Cutler has a well established career in the industry, this is his first foray into feature films. The director has worked primarily on documentaries including ‘A Perfect Candidate’, ‘The September Issue’, ‘Thin’ and ‘The War Room’, a film based on Bill Clinton’s run for office during the 1992 presidential election. The documentary

earned Cutler critical praise and an Academy Award nomination. If you love a romantic tearjerker and are not expecting anything too original then ‘If I Stay’ might just be worth viewing before summer is out.

WINE LIST

Cabernet Merlot

C

abernet merlot is one of the world’s classic red wine blends, the two varieties coming together perfectly as a match for a diversity of meat dishes as well as with many pastas and good cheese platters. Forester Estate in Western Australia’s Margaret River currently has a moreish 2012 blend whose 54 per cent gutsier, tannic Cabernet Sauvignon is nicely softened by a 36 per cent softer and moresupple Merlot, and a six per cent touch of Petit Verdot, two per cent Malbec and two per cent Cabernet Franc. It’s resulted in a wine that gives a rewarding palate of currants, blackberries and red berry fruits, together with notes of chocolate (cocoa,) coffee crème and underlying cedar oak from 18 months in small French oak barriques. And ideal buy-now-drink-now red, this one will develop nicely over the next three to five years; if you can’t wait that long, pay $24 and enjoy with most meat dishes or with well-sauced pastas or a cheese platter. Watch this one: The Clare Valley’s Tim Adams has released a mouth-filling 2014 Riesling that’s got ‘seafood’ written all over it with wonderfully Clare lime and lemon flavours that dominate the palate, and coupled with nicely balanced acidity. Tim included fruit in this one from a couple of vineyards new to the label – one is Skilly Ridge that Tim and wife Pam bought in January 2014 after the death of Clarke Ingham.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

Doughnut craze had Penrith captivated NATHAN TAYLOR looks back at the opening of Australia’s first Krispy Kreme store in Penrith and tracks down the man who was first in line back in 2003 Allan Dickins was first in line at Krispy Kreme’s Penrith store back in 2003

I

t seems like just yesterday when lines were snaking around the Penrith Panthers complex full of hungry locals waiting to sink their teeth into Australia’s newest yummy craze. People waited for hours on end, in the freezing cold on most days, just to be one of the first in the country to taste a delectable Original Glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut. The year was 2003 and the Penrith Panthers were flying high in the NRL, so what better place to launch the first Krispy Kreme store outside of North America than right here in our backyard. The Penrith location was announced by Krispy Kreme operations director Glenn Blewitt back in September 2002, who said the outlet would serve 16 to 21 varieties of doughnut, employ more than 70 people and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Speaking at the time, Mr Blewitt said the Penrith location was “fantastic” but remained coy on its exact coordinates. “We wanted to open in what we felt was a good cross section of the Sydney region, so we selected Penrith as the first store… however, we haven’t quite stitched up the deal yet,” he said.

Months later it would be revealed that the Panthers complex on Mulgoa Road, which was and is still Penrith’s leading entertainment hub, would be home to Australia’s first Krispy Kreme store. On March 6, 2003, then Penrith Mayor Greg Davies, CEO of Krispy Kreme Australia John McGuigan as well as hoards of doughnut lovers and dignitaries attended the official launch of Krispy Kreme in Penrith, some three months before the store was officially due to open to the public. “We are delighted to have the opportunity of bringing Krispy Kreme to the first country outside of North America and I am sure that the people of Penrith will enjoy the Krispy Kreme doughnut experience,” Mr McGuigan told the Weekender at the time. The store’s major features were set to include a purpose built doughnut machine capable of producing 250 dozen doughnuts per hour with customers able to watch doughnuts being made through a glass viewing window plus a 24 hour Drive-Thru service. Councillor Davies, who switched on Krispy Kreme’s famous ‘hot light’ sign that day, said the local community would

benefit from the arrival of the popular American franchise. “Krispy Kreme will bring over 120 new jobs to Penrith. The company has great plans to work with and for the local community, and to have the first store outside of North America is a great credit to the people of Penrith,” he said at the time. Months later on Wednesday, June 18, 2003, Krispy Kreme’s first store outside of North America became a reality when its Penrith store opened its doors to the public for the very first time. It was reported that around 7000 people braved freezing temperatures that night to witness the milestone event and, of course, take a bite out of a famous Krispy Kreme doughnut. One of those brave souls that night was former Leonay resident Allan Dickins, who was the first in line at the grand opening, winning a year’s supply of Original Glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Speaking with the Weekender this week, Mr Dickins revealed he always had a “love affair” with Krispy Kreme after travelling to the United States a lot for work. “I even used to have a business partner over there who would mail me a box of

doughnuts every couple of months,” he said. “When I heard Krispy Kreme was coming to Australia, I had to be the first in line. I actually camped out for a number of days in the freezing cold.” Mr Dickins won a year’s supply of doughnuts for his efforts, which equated to a box of a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts per week. “I was working in St Marys at the time, so I’d often get a box a week and take them into work but probably after four or five months I had enough and gave the free doughnuts card to someone else to use,” he said. Mr Dickins is currently a director of a well known health business and lives in Tasmania where there are no Krispy Kreme stores currently. “I’m still a fan of Krispy Kreme and I always take my kids there whenever I’m passing through Penrith or Melbourne airport,” he said. These days there are more than 20 Krispy Kreme outlets across Australia, and its Penrith store is still very popular. However, the days of hour-long queues as well as doughnuts being produced on-site are a thing of the past.

Vegemite. AC/DC. Kath and Kim. Alf Stewart. Some things are so Aussie you could spot them blindfolded in your thongs and stubbies. This week, we’re asking – what does it mean to be a true blue Aussie bank? Friendly faces Australians don’t like being treated like a number. Visit a BOQ branch, and you’ll find someone ready and willing to ‘have-a-chat’ – just like your next door neighbour. Or your Aunty Flo. BOQ branches are locally owned and run. across the country, there’s a BOQ branch with a unique human face behind it. We can also be found in some of the most quintessentially Aussie places around like branches a stone’s throw from the beach. Looking out for our mates The word ‘mate’ has a long and proud history in Australia. With its roots in our convict history and the First World War, the anti-

egalitarian sentiment behind the concept of ‘mateship’ is one of the most important features of our cultural identity as Australians. Helping out a mate during times of difficulty is characteristic of the Australian way. Our Financial Hardship Assistance program, support of charities such as the Smith Family Toy and Book Appeal and Banking on our Kids are all examples of BOQ sharing the love with those in need. Check out our recent blog post of the amazing charity work of Brisbane’s Stafford branch. Supporting new growth There’s no doubt that technology is currently driving productivity growth in Australia. Support for Australian businesses to increase innovation is tipped to be a key area of future growth in productivity. In other words, it’s important for future generations of Aussies that we continue to be a “first mover” of technology. At BOQ, our commitment to innovation has resulted in the launch of a Sponsored Entrepreneur Program in partnership with coworking community River City Labs. Now in its second year, the program sponsors five entrepreneurs through a customised, three month mentoring program that helps shape ideas into a business!

Try pairing a dark grey dress with a light grey coat or knit and add a scarf as an additional layer. Look 2: the leather biker A leather biker jacket is going to be the must-have item of the season. While a good one will cost you an arm and a leg, it will certainly be worth it as you are sure to wear it again and again, and it will even be one that you will keep for many years to come. A jacket like this should be paired with something softer; try a flowing white shirt. Look 3: the extra-long coat This is a look that is all over Europe and should definitely become part of our autumn winter wardrobes here in Australia. I would reach for a grey coat but any neutral colour will do. Look 4: A pop of earth tones Dark browns, tan and burgundy are the colours you should reach for if you really feel the need to add some colour to your blacks, whites and greys. Add them in the form of accessories, like a scarf or handbag. Look 5: over the knee boots The idea of wearing boots that come right up your legs can be intimidating but if you can pull it off, they look amazing and are sure to keep your legs warm at the same time. Wear a black pair over black jeans or with a dress and stockings and throw a long, dark coat over the top.

hile we are only one week into February, the fashion industry has already decided that autumn is upon us and to be honest, on most days the weather seems to have decided it too. Stores are suddenly full of cardigans, long sleeves and leather and Australian labels are in the swing of launching their autumn/winter 2015 lines, which has really got me in the mood for some snuggly woolens. One such label is Witchery, which launched their AW15 line last week with a runway show at Sydney’s Carriageworks. The show featured little to no colour, except for a few smatterings of burgundy every now and then, but was a sea of black, white and grey. If the show said anything about the trends to come next season, it was that we won’t be wearing the colourful pieces we have been collecting over spring and summer. Standing out to me was the fact that every model strutting down the runway looked toasty warm in classy woollen knits and outfits that were layered to the nines. As someone who thrives in black, white and grey clothing I could not have been happier with what was on show last week. Using the Witchery AW15 show as inspiration, here are a number of new looks to get your hands on and try out next season. Look 1: grey on grey There is no doubt that there will be loads of different shades of grey clothing out next season and with layering a necessity in the cooler months, we have a great opportunity to have a play around with grey on grey.

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Your Valentine’s Day stars encourage impulsiveness in relationships. Some singles will fall in love at first sight – while attached Rams are in the mood for spontaneous displays of affection. The fiery Moon/Uranus/Jupiter aspects are a combustible combination so avoid saying and doing things that you later regret.

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

One of your most admirable qualities is your ability to ride through tough times with a dependable demeanour. Attached Bulls – this Valentine’s Day, find a dream you can share together. Singles – love is waiting online (or a firm friendship could turn into a romantic relationship). Try your luck.

GEMINI

HOROSCOPES

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

With Saturn sauntering through your relationship zone, avoid taking your partner (or potential partner) for granted. If you are attached, you need to work on the relationship and accept responsibility for fixing any problems. Singles – don’t rely on dumb luck! Put more effort into finding a compatible mate.

If you are attached, this Valentine’s Day is the time to transform your relationship so it is deeper and more emotionally satisfying. Singles – nurture your self-esteem and enjoy being on your own, only then will you be ready for a true partnership of equals. “Immature love says: I love you because I need you. Mature love says: I need you because I love you.”

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Lions are born romantics, but love is not always a bed of roses! With Saturn in your romance zone, you need to face the fact that there’s more to love than passionate declarations, candlelit dinners and kisses in the moonlight. Do you have what it takes to run a marathon, rather than a sprint?

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Stop criticising others and complaining about the long list of things that you can’t control – whether it’s politics, world events or the weather. With Venus and Mars both moving through your relationship zone, it’s time to enjoy and appreciate your partner or actively go looking for love.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Are you disappointed that your partner (or potential partner) isn’t perfect in every way? Leap off your pedestal and live in the real world Libra! Your mantra for Valentine’s Day is from Ann Landers “Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving.”

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

How does fitness feature in your life? Growing up and being the youngest of three boys, I have always been involved in sports and always kept very active throughout my teens and adult years. When it came to playing sport I have always been quite competitive, not just against others but wanting to better myself. At 32 I took an interest in triathlons and since completing my first sprint triathlon,

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Sagittarians love to chat but, with Saturn in your sign, strive to be more thoughtful and circumspect, as you stop talking long enough to hear what your partner has to say. So, on Valentine’s Day, heed the wise advice of Paul Tillich “The first duty of love is to listen.” Saturday is a super day to take an impromptu trip.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Ambitious Capricorns often place all their eggs in the career basket, then your personal life suffers from neglect and lack of nurturing. Don’t make the mistake of putting work before relationships! Your job (or public role) is incredibly important, but it must never take the place of close companionship and love.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Aquarians adore freedom and plenty of personal space, as you savour spending time with a very special person – you. But with Jupiter in your relationship zone you’ll find increased enjoyment from being generous and attentive towards your partner. Singles – love, travel and education are linked in wonderful ways.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Scorpios can too easily get caught up in relationship failures rom the past, or dating disasters from the present. Let it all go! You can’t improve your present partnership or find a fabulous new love if you are still brooding over a broken heart; stewing over who said what; or searching for someone to blame. Get on with life and you’ll be much happier for it!

With Mars and Venus both visiting your sign, it’s time to be bold and beautiful. Attached Fish – be authentic and tell your partner how you feel. Single Pisceans – don’t settle for second best. Have the confidence to wait for the right person to come along. “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength; while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”

it has snow balled from there, wanting to better my time, increase training and focus more on the right things to eat. I will admit the early morning training sessions were hard at first, but when you love something so much and continually see yourself improve, that early morning training session becomes something to look forward too. Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Everything in moderation 2. Plan your meals; this will avoid buying or eating on the run, which in the majority of cases will equal fast food 3. Drink plenty of water. I always have a water bottle wherever I go

Since I started competing in triathlons, I really enjoy training in all three disciplines – swim/bike/run.

A daily ‘must do’? MOVE! I always find an excuse to walk around. Walk to the shops don’t drive, take the stairs not the elevator, park in the far corner of the carpark and walk.

Brett Bellingham

Find an excuse to walk!

LEO

Biggest health/fitness misconception? We all know what the right things are to eat! There is no magic pill or shake or short term program that will miraculously transform you into a healthy fit person. Change is slow and being healthy and fit is a LIFESTYLE change. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? Being a role model for my two young boys. Hopefully if they see their parents eating healthy and exercising they will take it on board as a way of life. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most?

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? The old saying, ‘you only get out what you put in’. As my passion is racing triathlons I’m always striving to beat my times and achieve my goals for those races. I feel having something to work for is the best motivator as when it comes to race day your results will speak for themselves. It also helps having a wife who’s studying a Certificate 3/4 in personal training and has such a passion for a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes it’s necessary to have a person there to remind you on the direction you want to be heading. Freestyle – anything else you want to say? Training doesn’t have to be a chore, find a person/s with similar goals to help motivation and achieve your personal goals. I find group fitness to be extremely beneficial, pushing yourself beyond limits you will achieve on your own. Set several small goals rather than one big goal, it can be difficult but once you see and feel the change it can be a massive motivator. Have a training plan with plenty of variety and ensure it’s manageable and flexible around your lifestyle and commitments. Be planned and organised.

experiences during these months to prevent antisocial behaviour, fear and aggression. Even after four months of age, continued exposure to a variety of people and other animals is important in maintaining good social skills. Puppies need to meet as many new people as possible in a wide variety of situations.

This being said, it is important not to overwhelm them or have a negative experience. Start with calm introductions to one or two people at a time. If your puppy handles this well then increase the number of people, noise level and activity level. It is a good idea to have new people to give your puppy a small treat as this will teach the puppy that new and strange people, with an outstretched hand are a positive thing. Once a puppy has learnt the sit command, have each new friend ask your puppy to sit before giving a treat. This also teaches a proper greeting and makes the puppy less likely to jump on people. It is important that a young pup has opportunities to learn about children; they often act and behave differently to adults and dogs often see them as a different species. People running, riding bikes, roller skating and riding scooters seem very different to young puppies. So learning that these things are not scary is important. Take your puppy to visit friends’ homes to interact with their pets and family. Ideal friends to visit are those with calm pets and calm children. Sometimes people are told to keep their puppy home until all of the immunisations are complete.

How often have you heard someone describe Christian faith in the God of the Bible as a “leap of faith” or even “blind faith”? Sometimes those who have Christian faith are thought of as irrational people compared to more the “sensible” people who have done away with such silly superstitions as “faith in God”. Yet, if you think about it, we all have “faith”. We have faith that the sun will rise in the morning. We have faith that our car will start when you turn the key in the ignition and we are disappointed if the car will not start, because based on

he was perfectly trustworthy, always working for our good and never for our harm. Christian faith, rather than something that is a leap of blind faith, is actually faith in the facts and evidence around the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. It has been the experience of Christian people for 2000 years who have found this confident faith, life transforming and life renewing. You too can know and experience the wonderful difference that faith in the living Jesus can make to your life. Real faith is never blind; it is always focused on Jesus. Is yours?

the evidence and facts, this is what we expect. Christian faith is no different. Christian people put their faith and confidence in the God who is. Ultimately, the Bible says, our faith should be centred on Jesus; “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of God.” When you look at Jesus’ life,

He is a little food obsessed and even likes to have a nibble from some nonfood items. Oscar also has some funny habits, even more funny than the fact that he loves water but hates the hose. “He likes to sleep upside-down with all four feet in the air and carries his bowl around for half an hour after every meal,” Becky said. “He is cutest when he is sitting waiting at the window when we get home, waggling his tail so hard his bum wiggles too like only a puppy can!”

We have been seeing lots of new puppies lately and we thought it would be appropriate to discuss socialisation for your new puppy. Socialisation is the process where puppies develop positive relationships with other living things. The most important time for socialisation is during the first three to four months of life. The experiences your puppy has during this time have a major effect on developing personality and how well they get along with people and other animals . It is important that we provide frequent, positive social

or the 28th consecutive year, local senior Peter Genellos completed the Bridge to Bridge swim at the Sydney International Regatta Centre for charity. Despite his age, the 72-year-old completed the 3km swim easily, though he says it is getting tougher every year. “The idea is that I try to do something really, really hard and by doing that, hope to encourage people to donate to the cause I am supporting,” Mr Genellos said. “I have raised a lot of money in my time doing the swim, mostly for children’s organisations like the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and also cancer support organisations. “My wife has had breast cancer twice so for 10 or more years I raised money for Nepean Hospital’s Cancer Care Unit and their oncology ward. I must have raised over $20,000 for them.” Mr Genellos used to be known as ‘the mad swimmer’ because he would make the swim no matter what the conditions. He has raised over $110,000 for various charities in his time. He is hoping to raise over $7,000 for Little Wings this year “I first met Kevin [Robinson, organisation founder] when he spoke to my Rotary club a little while back. I think it is a very worthy charity and would like to support it for the next five years. The work they do for sick children is amaz-

Ballroom dancing is a gentle, lowimpact, social, aerobic exercise, so as well as keeping you physically fit and active, it is good for your brain health, AND you can do it all yearround, rain, hail or shine! It is a feel-good way to improve your fitness. Given the unique combination of physical exercise, social interaction and mental concentration, all set to music, it’s no wonder it has been found to help relieve stress, increase energy and improve strength and muscle tone. As well, there is a large variety of dances and rhythms so it’s anything but boring. Penrith Ballroom Dance offers tuition to all: children - boys and girls, adults and seniors – singles and couples. They offer private lessons and group classes. You can dance socially,

take exams or hit the competition floor. They have a Social Practice night once a month and also offer Gift Certificates for all occasions. Many engaged couples come to Penrith Ballroom Dance to learn an individually tailored bridal dance to their specially chosen music. Your bridal dance can be simple, gentle movements around the floor, it can include as many WOW factors as you can manage or it can also be to more upbeat or faster music. Whichever you choose, it’s always enjoyable! So come and join the fun … beginners and experienced dancers … WALK IN and DANCE OUT at Penrith Ballroom Dance.
