COVER STORY

Music royalty on show at industry’s night of nights Our reporters and photographers were there to catch up with the music industry’s biggest stars at the ARIA Awards, which were held in Sydney last week. And as we discovered, after a number of years in decline, it appears the ARIA Awards are back in a big way, celebrating the best of Australian music... he cream of the music crop were out in force for the 2014 ARIA Awards at The Star Event Centre last week. Australian musicians rubbed shoulders with international pop acts including Katy Perry and One Direction, as well as Australia’s own 5 Seconds of Summer who’ve gained a huge following worldwide and were one of the most popular acts on the red carpet.

T

KATE REID @kate_reid6

The big winners on the night were Sia – who took out the award for Telstra Album of the Year, Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release and Best Video – and Chet Faker who went home with Best Male Artist and Best Independent Release. West Life was there on the red carpet and backstage to chat to the stars including ARIA winners Dan Sultan, Sheppard, and The Wiggles along with local stars including ‘The X Factor’ winner Marlisa, ‘The Voice’ winner Anja Nissen, and a host of others. Anja Nissen On the response from western Sydney fans: “It’s been a really, really great response, I’ve had a lot of support which has been awesome and yeah I just can’t wait to come out with my new stuff. I’ve just been writing a lot at the moment”. Dan Sultan On the process of creating his new EP ‘Dirty Ground’: “I sat in a room with some microphones and I had an acoustic guitar and that was it. You know ‘Blackbird’ [which won Dan the Best Rock Album award] took months and months and a lot of production, a lot of overdubs and this took a few hours, ‘Dirty Ground’ took a few hours so it was the complete opposite. I’ve had some reviews where it says it doesn’t go far enough into production. Everyone’s allowed to have their own opinion but to me that’s a bit of a compliment because that’s what I was trying to do, I was trying to have it really stripped back but it is the opposite to ‘Blackbird’”. Amy and Emma from Sheppard On the other nominees in their category: “We’d really love to see Sia take it out. She is incredible and she’s a great songwriter so we’d love to see her win something”. The Wiggles On their nomination for Best Children’s Release, a category The Wiggles in their original format took out 11 times: Simon: “Yeah, I think it’s great. What Anthony and the other guys started almost 25 years ago, and to be here today and be able to continue that on is pretty special”. On who they are looking forward to seeing: Anthony: “Everyone, really. Katy Perry,

I know it’s hard to get on this red carpet so I’m just grateful to be here

Justice Crew and Chet Faker. Chet Faker has a great voice. One Direction as well. Basically everyone”. Paulini On being back at the ARIAs: “Yeah, its my first time in five years actually! And I know it’s hard to get on this red carpet so I’m just grateful to be here”. On her new single: “My single is out right now, ‘Air It All Out’ and the album comes out in February which I’m really looking forward to”. On the new crop of talent show stars: “I think it’s great, I’m a huge believer in, if the opportunity is there, take it, which is exactly what I did. I took the opportunity and its gotten me this far which I’ll always be grateful for”. Marlisa On her recent show at Rooty Hill RSL: “I played a 30 minute set, six songs and it was incredible to see my support base in western Sydney. I have another show at the Rooty Hill RSL coming up next week which I’m really excited about”. On support from her fans: “I’ve found it really great to see people from my home town supporting me, and I think from western Sydney and the Philippines are two of my biggest fan bases, so its defi-

nitely been great to come back out here”. Triple J Presenters Matt and Alex (who were dressed as Sia and Chet Faker respectively) On Sia’s decision to not show her face during performances, interviews and award shows: Matt: “I felt like it was about time people saw Sia’s face. Because not many people know that she looks like a half Ghanaian Australian man, but it’s time. I’m sick of hiding”. Chris Lilley On his competition for Best Comedy Release: “I just met a guy called Buddy Good, and he seems pretty funny so he can have it. I don’t mind, he seemed cool”. On where he gets inspiration for his characters: “I will be looking out tonight. I’ll be looking for some inspiration. There’s some pretty interesting characters around tonight”. ARIA host Osher Gunsberg On whether he is nervous to take on the hosting duties: “Not at all, rehearsals have all gone really well so I’m looking forward to it”. On the performances he is most looking forward to: “I’m definitely looking forward to Chet Faker’s performance, and

It’s been confirmed that the ARIA Awards will continue to be staged in Sydney for the foreseeable future.

Neil Finn and Paul Kelly in rehearsal were really great, I think people will really be singing at the top of their lungs for those guys. It’ll be great”. On who he hopes will take out an award: “I’ve got a soft spot for Sheppard, I think they’re pretty great, and also Chet Faker”. Tim and Jon Farriss from INXS On the Australian music industry and who has the potential for longevity in the business: Jon: “Look it’s always hard to say, I certainly wouldn’t want to name names and jinx the poor people. There’s a lot of hoops to jump through, there’s a lot of experience in life and just let it happen at the pace it’s supposed to happen. “I mean the nominees for the Album of the Year that we’re presenting are all amazing and so diverse and each album has to be taken on its merit and for that I think Australia’s amazing because it’s got such diverse taste.” On whether they ever get sick of award shows: Jon: “No I don’t get sick of them. I mean this is an important one. It’s Australia and it’s celebrating Australian music and all the effort and all the love and all the passion and all those things that grew us into wanting to be a band in the first place”. Tim: “I mean many many years ago you’d get sick after them (laughs)”. Jon: “And over the years Tim and I worked out a really good method of coping with all that”. Jon: “It’s just sneaking out early”.

13 years on, jazz is still loved at Penrith RSL

KATE REID @kate_reid6

n December 2001 Saturday afternoon jazz kicked off at the Penrith RSL Club and 13 years later it’s still going strong. To celebrate the anniversary the Penrith RSL Jazz/Swing family will be putting on another great afternoon of jazz on Saturday, December 6 featuring Geoff Bull and the Finer Cuts. Over the years the free weekly jazz afternoons have attracted a range of swing and jazz bands and musicians, along with young graduates from the Conservatorium of Music. There have been a host of band leaders who have been involved with the event including Bob Gillespie, Bob Barnard, Mike Hallam, Errol Buddle, Greg Poppleton, Laurie Bennett, Alan Solomon, Yuki Kumagai and John Mackie. Penrith RSL Jazz/Swing Family member Anne Wilkinson said that the jazz afternoons have been a hit with audiences, attracting a range of people from locals to those further afield. “We have audience members from the Penrith district and the Blue Mountains area and a variety of Sydney suburbs,” she said. After Penrith RSL moved to larger premises on Tindale Street the Saturday afternoon jazz sessions were introduced. Clearly the decision paid off, with the event now lasting for more than a decade. “It just showed that there was a calling for it, for jazz,” Anne said. In an age where entertainment changes frequently

JAZZ AND SWING PENRITH RSL EVERY SATURDAY @ 2PM it’s encouraging to see the success and longevity of weekly live music events such as the Saturday jazz sessions. “We’re very grateful to the Penrith RSL for keeping it on,” Anne said. With audiences that range from the young, to the young at heart there is always room for new family members. To those who have yet to experience a laidback afternoon of jazz and dancing Anne has some simple advice. “Just come once and see if you like it,” she said. Delta’s back where it began Singer Delta Goodrem will be returning to her roots next March when she visits Ramsay Street again for the 30th Anniversary of ‘Neighbours’. Goodrem will reprise her role of Nina Tucker for a limited run of three episodes plus appear in a documentary retrospective. The 30-year-old was last seen on the iconic soap in 2005, so it will be welcome homecoming for fans of the show.

SBS2 have started airing a popular American late night show called ‘@midnight’. A rotating line-up of top comedians battle nightly to determine who has the funniest take on current social media and pop culture happenings. The show already airs at midnight on the Comedy Channel but SBS2 have started their series right from the very beginning.

Nine are still yet to confirm whether they’ll give ‘Big Brother’ a shot next year despite them opening up a housemate registration of interest for the next series, if they have one, on their website. The recent finale, which saw Ryan win, pulled in around 700,000 viewers.

Fans of the popular A&E show ‘Ghost Adventures’ will be shocked to hear that co-founder and investigator Nick Groff has surprisingly quit the show. Rumours suggest a rift between fellow co-founder and lead investigator Zak Bagans was to blame.

Foxtel channel STUDIO will be no more come March next year, instead it will be replaced by a similar channel called Foxtel Arts HD. The new channel will feature opera, ballet productions, theatre, dance, cabaret, music, literature and visual arts. STUDIO is owned by SBS.

Channel Seven has announced this year’s ‘Carols in the Domain’ will be hosted by the ‘Sunrise’ team which includes David Koch, Sam Armytage, Natalie Barr and Mark Beretta. The much-loved family tradition, now in its 32nd year, will be broadcast live on Saturday, December 20 at 8.30pm.

Music EXODUS: GOD AND KINGS RATED M Starring: Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver and Aaron Paul Now screening at Hoyts Penrith LUCY RATED MA15+

Starring: Scarlett Johannson and Morgan Freeman The premise of this film is basically, what could humans accomplish if they could unlock and have access to 100 per cent of their brain’s capacity instead of the average 10 per cent that most have. Lucy (Scarlett Johannson) is caught up in a ‘nightmarish’ deal where she is captured overseas and turned into a drug mule for a new and powerful synthetic drug. When the bag she is carrying inside her stomach leaks, Lucy’s body undergoes unimaginable changes that unlock her mind’s full potential. With her new-found powers, Lucy turns into a merciless warrior intent on getting back at her captors. She receives invaluable help from Professor Norman (Morgan Freeman), the leading authority on the human mind. This sci-fi-action thriller explores a unique idea, something which is seen less and less in Hollywood cinema these days. If you enjoyed ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ or ‘Transcendence’, chances are, you will love this film!

‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’, a film from acclaimed director Ridley Scott (‘Gladiator’) retells the biblical story of Moses, who, according to the book of Exodus, suffered near death during infancy, was adopted into the Egyptian royal family, defied the Pharoah, freed the Hebrews and parted the Red Sea. With Christian Bale (‘The Dark Knight’) as Moses, Ben Kingsley (‘Ghandi’) as Nun, Joel Edgerton (‘The Great Gatsby’) as Ramses and Sigourney Weaver (‘Alien’) as Tuya, this all-star cast is set to make this film a blockbuster of epic proportions. At almost two hours and 30 minutes long, the film is said to retell the famous biblical story of Moses with stunning visual effects and 3D immersion. The plagues and epic parting of the Red Sea scenes are said to be rendered perfectly. While the film carries an air of Hollywood with it, it finds redemption in that it actually isn’t overtly offensive to its original religious text.

SHE & HIM CLASSICS Out Now Some may recognise She & Him frontwoman Zooey Deschanel from her starring roles in films like ‘500 Days of Summer’ or the hugely successful television series ‘New Girl’, but many of you may not know that Deschanel is an accomplished musician. Deschanel, along with band partner M.Ward, form the gifted American indie duo. Deschanel performs lead vocals, tambourine, piano, ukulele and writes lyrics, while Ward performs guitar, backing vocals, piano and is also involved with production. She & Him are now back with their fifth studio release, ‘Classics,’ a new cover album that features timeless standards carefully selected by the duo. She & Him recorded the album live, allowing a spontaneity that captured the spirit of the songs in their truest form. Ward exercises his acute ear for string arrangements, co-arranging a full 20-piece orchestra. The result unfurls as 13 classic cuts as heartbreaking as they are uplifting. The album features covers of classic songs by artists including Billie Holiday, Ella FitzGerald, Louis Armstrong, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.

‘The Crew’ is a revolutionary action-driving game developed exclusively for next-gen consoles. The game takes players on a reckless drive inside a massive, open-world recreation of the United States, and has been labelled the most varied driving game experience ever. Take part in a relentless ride to move up the ranks of the 510s, a gang grown around Detroit’s illegal street racing scene. You will have to make a rep for yourself on the underground-

racing scene and eventually take down their activities all over the country. Manoeuvre through the bustling streets of New York to lose the cops, cruise down sunny Miami Beach or trek through the breathtaking plateaus of Monument Valley. Each locale comes with its own set of surprises and challenges to master. On your journey you will encounter other players, all potentially worthy companions to crew up with or future rivals to compete against.

hen the Clare Valley’s Tim Adams decided to plant somewhat new and unproven at the time Pinot Gris 10 years ago, he reckons he did so for the challenge of seeing just how well this variety would go. His wife Pam, their company’s general manager, had a different view. She suggested that Tim was going through a mid-life crisis. But she supported his venture and persistence, and today Tim Adams Pinot Gris is one of Australia’s top-selling premium Pinot Gris. Tim says those first plantings a decade ago were the result of drinking a great Alsace Pinot Gris with an old mate, and thinking how well the variety may go on some specific Clare Valley sites. He’s not looked back, and today uses fruit in his Tim Adams Pinot Gris from his own vineyards and those of contract local growers. Now one of the district’s more renowned producers of quality wines, Shaw has just released a 2012 Winemakers Selection Cabernet Merlot that’s a real mouth-filler of fresh berry flavours and delightful aromas from the glass of cassis and dark plums.

$10 solution to tanning problems

life & style

KATHERINE TWEED katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

Fake tans are a much safer option when it comes to getting a browner look this season

For all the self-tanners out there who are opting for a faux tan over a natural one this summer, I have found the product that will change your life and it has been right under our noses this whole time. While I always hope to get a little bronzed from the sun once summer comes around, I know that fake tanning is the safer and better option, which is why I love to get out my St Tropez or Bondi Sands. You don’t get tan lines, you can control how dark or light you want to go and you are safe from the nasties that come with sun exposure, but self-tanning can be pretty cumbersome, gets very messy and is so easy to get wrong. I know from years of experience with fake tan that it doesn’t always go your way and I have endured hours of teasing from family members and colleagues about the orange palms that I always sport after a tanning session. And in addition to that, if I had orange palms and streaky legs, the teasing would continue for days. I don’t know why, but every time I would head to the shops to pick up a new tan, I would ignore the mitts that were sitting beside them on the shelves. Whenever I would read the instructions on the self tanning products, I would ignore the sentence that plainly said “using a tan applicator mitt...” I would be left scrubbing my palms for hours after tanning, trying to get rid of the dirty orange stains that were bound to stay there for days – a dead giveaway that my bronzed look was not even close to natural. Every time I would ignore the suggestion to use a mitt, I would pay for it dearly, but I would make

the mistake over and over again, for absolutely no reason. That time is now over, as I have converted and am now a happy tan applicator mitt-user and I am kicking myself that I didn’t begin using a mitt sooner. All my concerns about using one – that I would have more streaks, miss spots and that it would be hard to use – were thwarted within 10 seconds of using it and I mean it when I say that I will never go back, never. I have been using St Tropez’s tan applicator mitt, which has a water resistant barrier between

the foamy, almost velvet-like application side and your hand on the inside. This of course means that I no longer have to deal with horrible stains on my palms. It is washable, allows you to better control where you are applying the tan and gives a smooth result with not a streak in sight – how can you complain with that? Anyone who is like the old me and is continually putting up with stained palms and streaky legs, fork out the $10 and get yourself a mitt because they’re lifesavers. Go on, try it!

Tips for remodelling your jewellery I’ve re-designed and made a number of remodelling pieces lately. This is when you use diamonds or gemstones that you already have, either passed down from a loved one or possibly set into something that’s not quite your taste anymore, and create a new piece of jewellery that suits your taste but still honours the memories of your loved ones. I thought I’d share my top four tips to keep in mind when you’re having something remade. 1. Do what you really want If you are going to go to the effort and expense of having something re-designed and remade you need to truly love it. If an extra row of diamonds is going to really set it off, or having the stones set a little further around the band will make a big difference to the look, I would recommend going for it. 2. Go in to the exercise with an open mind Sometimes the ideas that you may have for the design of your piece may not actually work well with what you have to work with. That’s why we’re here! As designers and jewellers we can guide you and help you design your piece and will often ask you to try things on that you may have never thought of, and often end up loving and incorporating elements of into your new creation. 3. The sentiment comes from the stones Sometimes when re-designing a very sentimental piece, clients will be inclined to try and keep the design as close to the original one as possible. There is nothing wrong with this, sometimes a simple change of colour of the metal or a tweak here or there can make the world of difference. However, sometimes the motivation behind this can be to try and ‘honour’ the memories of the original piece. My advice is to remember that using the stones from a loved piece of jewellery is honouring it. Make sure that you love the new design and you will feel like you are paying homage to the memories. 4. Have your stones assessed before you have them set This is a perfect time to have your diamonds or gems weighed and assessed by a gemmologist and/or jeweller. Quite often well loved jewellery that has been handed down through the family has minimal paperwork or certificates. Now is a great time to request for this to be done.

It will be hard for others to keep up with you this week. You’re in Gemini gadfly mode, as the Sun stimulates your gregarious side and Jupiter revs up your mercurial mind. You’ve got work to tackle; appointments to keep; parties to attend; plans to initiate; books and blogs to read; plus much talking, texting and tweeting to do. Just make sure that, amidst the whirlpool of activity, you actually achieve something.

Venus decamps into your domestic zone so your relationship with a family member starts to improve, as you see things from their point-of-view. When it comes to your glorious goals for the future, don’t just talk about them Libra. Long-term plans require action to turn them into robust reality. It’s also a week to clean and de-clutter.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Sagittarians are in super chatty mode! The Sun and Mercury hook up in your sign, which increases your curiosity and tendency to talk a lot. Jovial Jupiter then links up with Mercury and the Moon, which boosts your outer confidence, emotional wellbeing and sense of humour. You’re also keen to soak up overseas influences via travel, learning another language or connecting with friends.

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Goats can work too hard and be grumpy. But, with vivacious Venus vamping into your sign, you’re feeling unusually flirtatious and fabulous, as you charm the cynics and dazzle the doubters. It will be easy to get what you want – and who you want – over the festive season if you stop being a control-freak and try a ‘softly-softly’ approach.

Whatever comes your way, you’ll handle it with plenty of aplomb and loquaciousness. Be inspired by Emily Dickinson “Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is joy enough.”

Are you stuck in cruise control? Mighty Mars encourages you to be proactive about personal projects, as you work on being more motivated and assertive. Strive to be brazenly bold and beautiful. If you’re not confident about your talents, why should anyone else sing your praises? On Friday, aim to be generous and supportive.

Storm season is here, are you prepared? From now until March, Australians need to be wary of the extreme conditions that could damage their home or put their lives at risk. The government is urging residents to create plans and kits and ensure their families and properties are prepared for the upcoming wild weather. Here are five tips for preparing your home and family for the impending storm season: Have a stranded kit and an “I’m getting out of here” kit: When a storm hits, you often have two options – should I stay or should I go? Because of this, it is absolutely vital that you have preparations in place to support you, no matter your choice. If you leave, you will need an emergency kit stored somewhere convenient, like your car, that contains all the necessities for a quick getaway. Similarly, your ‘stay kit’ needs to act as a support if you find yourself cut off from the rest of the world due to flooding or landslides. Have a plan: Storms are largely unpredictable and can strike without warning. It is important that you and your family know what to do and where to meet if the weather gets extreme. In some cases, you will be unable to return to your home. This is why you should have emergency plans that include alternative meeting points for your family. Prepare your home: There are a number of ways you can ensure your home is ready to take the brunt of the storm, such as securing loose items and disconnecting the power if leaving the property. Another important consideration is taking out home and contents insurance. This will help you repair and recover from any storm damage, so you can get back into your property sooner rather than later. Keep watch: Through the coming months, it is essential that you stay vigilant. Have a radio on hand at all times and keep a close eye on weather reports. If a storm is heading your way, it will be easier to respond if you are aware. Be ready for anything: While most Australians understand the common risks of a tropical storm, the extreme summer weather conditions mean that anything could happen. It is important to be prepared not just for rain and wind, but also storms, bushfires and other damaging weather events.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

EMILY CAHILL Love your body, love yourself

Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Don’t work out because you feel as though you have too, it shouldn’t be a chore. Work out because you love yourself and your body. 2. One bad meal won’t hurt you or your progress, simply pick yourself back up and use it as motivation to work even harder the next day 3. And don’t forget to take a break! You don’t need to work out seven days a week, give yourself and your body some time to rest and recover.

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? I find that making sure I’m in a positive mindset at the start of every day pushes me to want to not only work out but better myself.

on themselves and their bodies. The weight on the scales isn’t an indication of who you are as a person, and it doesn’t measure your fitness journey. Girls should be striving to achieve a healthy lifestyle, rather than the photo shopped, ‘perfect’ body from the cover of a magazine.

A daily ‘must do’? Remind yourself to be the best you can be. A little motivation and positive words can go a long way. Life’s far too short to be negative towards yourself and your body.

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? The biggest benefit of being fit and healthy is being able to love yourself and your body. You know that you’re working hard to earn it and pushing past huge mental boundaries to get there.

Biggest health/fitness misconception? Teenage girls, these days, are far too harsh

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most?

Freestyle – anything else you want to say? Working out for me is 100 per cent mental. Too often I tell myself that I can’t rather than I can. Through this journey I have learnt that I’m so much stronger than what I think, and I’m learning to believe in myself more and more each day. “We are not perfect human beings, nor should we pretend to be. But it is necessary for us to be the best versions of ourselves that we can be”.

life & style

Weight training is definitely what I enjoy the most in the gym, deadlifts would have to be my favourite exercise. I’ve also recently started participating in SWEAT classes at the YMCA. I absolutely love the positive energy and everyone motivating each other to push through the workouts.

How does fitness feature in your life? As an ex-gymnast and now a gymnastics coach at the YMCA, living a healthy lifestyle has always been second nature to me. Working with the YMCA family has driven me to want to pursue a career in fitness. I absolutely love the positive energy that comes out of all of our fitness trainers and members, and I can’t wait to be able to help others reach their own fitness goals, both mentally and physically.

HEALTH

Should kids be lifting weights? DAVID STEIN Owner & Manager of Fitec david@ fitec.com.au

Kids love having fun so why not hit the monkey bars instead of the gym to build strength?

WW14637

Friday 5 December 2014 the western weekender • west life

I’m often asked if kids doing weights is good or bad. People hear in many places that if you’re “too young” don’t lift “too much”. Some interesting research from breakingmuscle.com has shown us something very important to consider is the athlete’s age of peak height velocity (PHV). The PHV occurs when a person is growing the quickest. The average age for reaching PHV is 12 for girls and 14 for boys. Peak weight velocity normally follows shortly after PHV. Seems like you have to grow up before you grow out. The growth spurt can last anywhere from 1.5 years for fast developers to five years for slow developers. The PHV is the starting point for determining physical maturity and gives us a big clue of the best age to train the various athletic qualities. Strength, speed, flexibility, technique and endurance are all vital to athletes and peak at different ages. It is best for the athlete to develop each at the appropriate age. The window of opportunity for this is only so wide, though. If you train these aspects too late, the athlete will not reach full potential. Everyone grows at different rates, so it’s impossible to impose a single training program for an age range due to differences in the rate and timing of their growth. An important consideration is to decrease loading of the limbs and reduce high-intensity work to avoid overtraining and inflammation of the bone-tendon connections. During this ‘growing taller’ period the limb levers, especially, experience an increase in length. This is often the cause of the teenager’s awkward motor skills during this phase. But the muscles themselves do not respond well until later when peak weight velocity occurs, which allows the muscles to achieve greater size. Until then, these young people experience unfavourable leverage, this will also have an effect not only on less strength but also on technique. In addition, there is also increased risk of musculoskeletal and epiphyseal cartilage injury, so it is important to monitor and control training load during these phases of your kids’ growth stages. Remember kids love making it fun, playing on a set of monkey bars can build just as much strength as any fancy gym equipment can.

Storms can be a major problem for dogs, who often develop anxiety when one is approaching

VET

VIEW FROM ABOVE

Wallace’s woeful worries

The King is born, and we should celebrate

With all the recent wild weather, we thought it would be appropriate to discuss thunderstorm phobias in dogs. Thunderstorm phobias are one of the most common behavioural problems in dogs. It can be heartbreaking to watch a dog that is scared and their escalating levels of panic and agitation over something that they don’t understand. Thunderstorm phobias are real and should not be ignored. Dogs that are scared will often display behaviours such as pacing, panting, pawing, drooling, hiding or vocalising. In extreme situations, they can also be destructive. Helping dogs with storm phobias can be challenging, but patience and commitment will allow your dog to feel at ease when thunderstorms occur. Nurse Louisa, at our practice, has a 12-year-old Beagle named Wallace. Wallace has always been scared of storms and would run around the backyard and bark when a storm approached. The owners were not initially concerned about this as they thought his behaviour was normal. As Wallace got older, his anxiety associated with storms worsened. Wallace would sense an approaching storm and start panting, pacing around the house, pawing at the owners and would continuously bark. This became very distressing for the owners and their young child and it started to impact on the quality of life of both Wallace and his owners. Louisa then decided to take a proactive approach to help Wallace with his storm phobias. Louisa found the best thing that helped Wallace was the use of anti-anxiety medication. However, just like humans, Wallace needed to trial a few different medications before he found one that made him feel better. Louisa also had to slowly change the dose with every storm until she found a dose that made Wallace feel at ease. This process took the owner three to four months. Some dogs also find comfort by wearing snug fitting shirts. An example of this is a commercially available garment called the Thundershirt. Wallace wears his Thundershirt when he first starts to become anxious in the presence of a storm. The Thundershirt applies gentle but constant pressure on the dogs torso and this pressure has an amazing calming effect for many dogs. Any questions about your dogs behaviour? Call us on 4731 3055.

Not everyone was happy when Jesus was born. The Bible’s gospel of Matthew tells us when the wisemen came to Jerusalem looking for “the one who has been born king”, that King Herod, the ruler of the region, found the news so threatening, that he was determined to do all he could to remove what he saw as a challenge to his rule. Matthew tells us that the danger to baby Jesus and his family became so real, they were forced to flee to the nearby country of Egypt as refugees. Yet, Herod’s attitude is not unlike many today, who find Jesus’ claim to be King and Lord as a threat to their independence. We can see this, for example, in the Year 6 school boy who confidently asserts, “No one will be the boss of my life!” Or the adult who continually rejects Jesus’ legitimate claim on their life. What makes this sad and tragic, is that so many people dismiss Jesus without ever understanding the character of Jesus’ kingship. The Bible reveals that Jesus is a King who came into our world to serve and to lay down his life for us. Jesus did this to make forgiveness available for the fact we do not treat God as we should. But not only this, Jesus is the King of an eternal kingdom, which those who belong to it, experience and know eternal peace and joy; a freedom from all that is wrong in our world. The birth of Jesus the King, which we remember at Christmas, is in fact great news, not to be rejected or ignored, but news to be accepted with joy and thanksgiving.

Charly waking up from a snooze

Charly eats almost anything, including lettuce. As an older dog she loves sleeping, cuddles and going for walks, even though she is tired after a short distance. She loves rides in the car too. Charly is an inside dog and hates being put outside. She hates getting wet, baths, being interrupted in the middle of a good sleep and the wind. She dislikes the wind

so much that she will bark at it. Ms Roberts said Charly has an interesting technique when hunting cockroaches. “It’s gross, but she somehow learned to squash cockroaches with her head,” she said. “Having Charly around has made me realise how much our pets need our love and care, and shown me how they become part of the family.” Ms Roberts added that Charly had a few health issues including arthritis in her back legs and some liver problems.

A new discussion paper released by Alzheimer’s Australia suggests that people with dementia should remain physically active, as it has a number of benefits. The paper, supported by Anglican Retirement Villages, has led Alzheimer’s Australia to urge health and aged care providers and governments to ensure that physical activity is encouraged in seniors, despite the barriers that may be presented. The report not only found that physical activity has benefits, as reported by people with dementia and their carers, but that physical activity is often difficult to do, with barriers such as inappropriately designed residential aged care facilities or risk averse cultures getting in the way. “We know that physical activity has many benefits for people of all ages, including better physical and mental health,” said CEO of Alzheimer’s Australia NSW The Hon. John Watkins. “This is also the case for people living with a diagnosis of dementia. Regular exercise and physical activity can help improve things like coordination and balance and create a better sense of wellbeing.” He added that it can also help in creating stronger social connections.

home or similar facility where their freedom would be restricted. “We have three functions through the year where we recognise our volunteers. It is important because they are our lifeblood – we wouldn’t be able to have this service for the people of the Penrith LGA if we didn’t have volunteers,” said Nepean Food Services Operations Manager Ditte Kozak. For many of the volunteers, like Jo Stephenson who has been volunteering for Nepean Food Services for six years, carrying out the work of the organisation brings them great joy. “We all love coming and doing this. I like meeting old people, it is a good thing to do for the community and one day when I get old, hopefully someone will bring me food,” Ms Stevenson, who volunteers seven days a fortnight, said. “It feels really good to be formally recognised. It is nice to know that we are appreciated, though we do get told quite regularly by staff here how much we are appreciated.” She said that over her years of volunteering with the organisation, she has come to see how essential and important their work really is. “Without this service, a lot of them would be starving, a lot of them wouldn’t have food and a lot of them would have to go in to care because they can’t do things for themselves,” she said.

Friday 5 December 2014 the western weekender • west life

Monday December 8th at 6:30pm at Penrith Senior Citizens Centre, 86 Station Street, Penrith For most people Christmas is a joyous time with family and friends and to reflect on the year that is ending and the one that is about to begin. However for someone whose loved one has passed away, the Christmas season can be a distressing time. Whether the loss is a recent one, or even when several years have passed, the traditions of Christmas often exacerbate feelings of loneliness and the sense that something is missing.

We invite you to join us and to bring a memento along with you such as a photograph or any other object of significance. Our service will include candle lighting in remembrance of those lost and will be followed by light refreshments. For more information or to RSVP, please phone 4721 7776

HISTORY

When cost is as important as care

Naval museum to open this weekend Naval past preserved thanks to new museum KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

ustralia’s naval history is about to get much more accessible for the people of Penrith, with the official opening of the Nepean Naval Museum this weekend. Located at 40-42 Bruce Neale Drive, Penrith, the museum is home to a collection of pieces from the country’s past, including model ships, preserved uniforms, flags and even a watertight door from the HMAS Melbourne. Clarrie Shaw, President of the Nepean Blue Mountains Naval Association of Australia branch, spent part of his 20-year career with the Royal Australian Navy on the Melbourne. Mr Shaw said that the public’s fascination with the navy and its history has not changed since his years of service and that is why the museum will be a great addition to the Penrith community. “Back then when we would pull in to port on the HMAS Melbourne, we would allow the public to have a look inside the ship. We would open it up on a Saturday and Sunday and would see thousands of

people come through,” he said. Mr Shaw believed it was important that the public appreciate the history of the Royal Australian Navy by having access to artefacts from its past. “All the items that we have were donated from people’s homes,” he said. “I am very passionate about preserving our history and with this display of interesting artefacts from the past, we can do that.” The Nepean Naval Museum officially opens this Saturday, December 6 from 10.30am.
