FEATURE STORY

Eskimo Joe frontman Kav goes solo on acoustic tour The members of the popular Aussie band currently have a lot of individual projects to focus on, so lead singer Kav Temperley is taking the opportunity to revive the hits of their second album ‘A Song is a City’.

hen you hear an Eskimo Joe track come on the radio it’s most likely going to be from the band’s 2006 album ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine’. But while that seems to be the release that gets the most airplay for the Fremantle based trio it’s their second studio album ‘A Song is a City’ – which celebrates it’s 10th anniversary this year – that lead singer Kav Temperley believes holds the most sentimentality for the band’s fans.

W KATE REID @kate_reid6

“People have lots of very personal experiences with that record. When I’m talking to people everyone’s always like ‘aww A Song is a City was my album’,” Temperley said. With this in mind the singer/songwriter is heading out on a three month solo acoustic tour across Australia to play tracks from the band’s 2004 album including ‘From The Sea’, ‘Older Than You’ and ‘Smoke’. But audiences will get more than just your usual gig experience. “When I worked out it was 10 freaking years since the album came out I just thought it was a good opportunity to go out and just play the songs and tell a lot of the stories as well,” Temperley said. “Some of those stories were really hard to tell back in the day, because it involved people and people we’d done business with and so on, so it was kind of inappropriate but now it’s like, it’s been a few years and no one really cares any more.” While Temperley embarks on his solo tour, band mates Stu MacLeod and Joel Quartermain are having a few months off and are taking on their own projects. For MacLeod that means building recording studios while Quartermain’s current focus is recording young musicians in the band’s studio in Fremantle. “Everyone’s kind of got their fingers in a few different pies. I’m still doing exactly the same thing as I was doing before,” Temperley said laughing. Not that he’s complaining. The self confessed ‘tragic’ when it comes to live music sees this tour as the perfect project to take on solo. “As far as telling stories and doing that kind of thing, if it’s just one person with an acoustic guitar just singing it lends itself to that a lot more,” he said. “You know you can sit down, and part of the performance can be the stories as much as they can be about the songs,” Temperley said. As well as offering a night of music and storytelling, audiences will also receive an acoustic EP recorded by Temperley, covering all the songs that inspired him during the making of ‘A Song is a City’, including

It was a classic moment in time of innocence and skill

Bill Withers’ ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ which Temperley saw on ‘Rage’ late one night. “Just hearing him play and sing it, I was like ‘sh**, that’s freaking amazing!’ And so I woke up the next day and I was walking into Fremantle to do my lyric writing and stuff and I just started to think about my own story and came back and just did my kind of version of ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ which ended up becoming the title track to the album ‘A Song Is A City’.’’ Looking back on that experience over a decade ago, Temperley has fond memories of the Perth music scene before the talent hidden on the west coast made its mark across the country. “What I remember is just a lot of joy because we had this fantastic jam room just out of Fremantle and it was a real open door policy for any of our friends bands or even people we didn’t know to come in and demo and jam on songs together,” he explained. “And so you had bands like Little Birdy, End of Fashion, Sleepy Jackson doing their first demos and everyone was in

their working on them together. “We’d go down to this place called the Newport Hotel in Freemantle and we’d have $2 beers and then come back and drunkenly jam on people’s ideas for songs and these are songs that end up becoming really kind of classic standards in their bands,” Temperley said. “It was a classic moment in time of innocence and skill coming together in a bit of a perfect storm. “You look at bands like Karnivool and the John Butler Trio who were all kind of around at that time as well and they’re just really hard working bands. “They don’t stop, they are just amazing live and I think that’s a really kind of special thing to Perth because it is so isolated.” Kav Temperley will be performing at the Collector Hotel in Parramatta on Saturday, July 26 at 7pm and the Clarendon Hotel in Katoomba on Sunday, July 27 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $25-$29. For more information visit www.kavtemperley. com.au/tour.

Shakespearean comedy, just as you like it!

For those who aren’t familiar with the tale it follows romantically linked Rosalind (played by Belinda Robertson) and Orlando (played by Luke Beattie). Of course things for the lovers don’t run smoothly as they are forced to flee into the Forest of Arden. The play is a fun comedy, full of all the elements that audiences have come to love about Shakespeare, like love at first sight, mistaken identities and cross dressing. ‘As You Like It’ also spawned one of the best known lines of all time: “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players.” The play will feature plenty of talented

Blacktown Theatre Company has been entertaining Western Sydney for over a decade under the name of Blacktown City Community Theatre. After almost 12 years they decided that Blacktown City Community Theatre no longer reflected the high standard of their productions and rebranded with a new name, new logo and a fresh approach. Now, next year the Blacktown Theatre Company will be celebrating their 15th birthday. Their aim is to provide quality theatre for not only the Blacktown community but also for those that are further afield. The passionate people involved with BTC would also love to have the opportunity to present more HSC texts in the future for local students. ‘As You Like It’ presented by the Blacktown Theatre Company will be on at the Richmond Road Theatre (Christ Church Anglican Church Blacktown) from Friday, July 4 to Saturday, July 12. Bert Newton too expensive? One of my favourite shows of all time is back on our screens from next week – ‘Full House’. Yep, that awesome family comedy featuring John Stamos, Bob Saget and of course, the Olsen twins begins on Foxtel’s 111 Greats this Monday at 3.30pm. To prove how obsessed with this show I am: I own the entire series on DVD and have met the twins and John Stamos!

Channel Ten has picked up three new FOX shows they are hoping will bring back viewers. ‘Backstrom’ centres on a detective who is brought back from exile to run the Portland Police Bureau SCU; ‘Empire’ centres on the head of a music empire whose three sons and ex-wife battle for his throne; and ‘Complications’ is a medical drama from the creator of ‘Burn Notice’.

Still on Ten, and their new game show ‘Family Feud’ will premiere at 6pm on Monday, July 14. Hosted by Grant Denyer, ‘Family Feud’ will give people an alternative to the ‘news overload’ on the other networks. Ten will also offer a play-along game on Beamly.

Australian TV legend Bert Newton’s contract with Channel Nine has expired. Nine are saying it was Newton’s choice not to renew but others are saying it was his six figure salary that scared Nine bosses away. Old Bert hasn’t been seen on our screens in years.

A huge happy birthday to ‘Home and Away’ star Ray Meagher who turns 70 today. Meagher, who plays the lovable Alf Stewart, has been on the show ever since it began in 1988 and has revealed he has no plans to retire anytime soon. That’s flamin’ awesome news for long time fans!

Olympic champion Ian Thorpe is back on our screens soon to head Ten’s Commonwealth Games coverage when it begins later this month. Thorpe will co-commentate swimming and co-anchor coverage with Mel McLaughlin. Thorpe has been out of the spotlight with health issues.

THE LEGO MOVIE RATED PG

Starring: Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman The movie follows Emmet, voiced by Chris Pratt, an ordinary LEGO minifigure who gets mistaken for being much more than ordinary. Emmet is believed to be the one LEGO minifigure who can save the world. This confusion sends him on a quest to help prevent an evil tyrant from wreaking havoc. He is joined on the quest by the old mystic Vitruvius, voiced by Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, along with the tough Lucy, voiced by Elizabeth Banks, who is the one that mistakes Emmet for someone capable of saving the world. The movie is jammed full of famous voices including Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman and Alison Brie. This is the first full-length theatrical LEGO adventure and has clearly been a success, gaining mostly positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. Along with the movie the DVD also contains some extra special features, so that viewers will have the chance to check out how they brought lego to life.

JERSEY BOYS RATED M Starring: John Lloyd Young and Christopher Walken

SIA 1000 FORMS OF FEAR Out July 4

Jersey Boys has been a Tony Award winning musical and now it’s coming to the big screen. The story is based around the lives of the members of musical group The Four Seasons. The movie adaptation was directed by the multi-talented movie icon, Clint Eastwood and the bands lead singer, Frankie Valli is brought to life by John Lloyd Young who took on the role of the band’s famed frontman in the Broadway version of the musical, a role which won him the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. The Four Seasons were the classic underdogs from the wrong side of the tracks and this movie follows the trials and tribulations they faced as they made their way to the top. The band brought listeners some of the most well loved songs of all time and the movie is packed with the band’s hits that included ‘Walk Like a Man’, ‘Bye Bye Baby’, ‘Sherry’, ‘Who Loves You’ and ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’, just to name a few. Rounding out the cast is Erich Bergen who plays Bob Gaudio and Michael Lomenda who plays Nick Massi. The band member is Vincent Piazza as Tommy Devito, who was lead guitarist for the band.

There is so much to love about Sia. The talented and eclectic Aussie singer/songwriter does pop music the way it should be; engaging, fun and emotionally raw. And by all indications that’s exactly what listeners will get with her newest release ‘1000 Forms of Fear’. The first single from the album ‘Chandelier’ has delighted fans with its soaring vocals and captivating video, featuring the very talented young dancer, Maddy Ziegler. Sia bares all to her listeners, never afraid of delving into authentic emotional depths, something that is all too rare in the world of pop. The album also includes the hit single ‘Elastic Heart’ featuring The Weeknd and Diplo. The track was included in the movie soundtrack for ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire.’ Beyond her talent as a singer Sia has also worked as a songwriter, collaborating with the likes of Eminem, Katy Perry, Beyonce and David Guetta. Though it’s an impressive list that’s only the tip of the iceberg for the musical dynamo. Sia’s 2010 release ‘We are Born’ spawned the hits ‘You’ve Changed’ and ‘Clap Your Hands’. ‘1000 Forms of Fear’ is Sia’s sixth studio album and was recorded at Echo Studio in Los Angeles and produced by Greg Kurstin.

WINE

Just the drop for ringing in the New Year... in 2020 DAVE ELLIS

ndrew Margan has been making wonderful Semillons in what he likes to call “pure Hunter style” for some 10 years now, wines that he puts particular effort into for his increasingly-lauded Aged Release range. The latest is a 2013 Limited Release White Label Semillon, that while you can uncap and enjoy in the glass now, is also one to give serious consideration to for celebrating something special down the

A

line, like maybe ringing in the year 2020. 2013 was outstanding for Semillon in the Hunter, and Andrew drew fruit for this one from a single block of old vines that gave huge, fully-ripe flavours with high natural acidity – that acidity being the key to this wine’s ageing potential. With lifted citrus on the nose and lovely grassy, lemon flavours now, it’s a drop to really enjoy with seafoods while young, but put a few bottles away and watch it develop over the years into a more toasty,

honeyed wine with a lemony butteriness. Pay just $30. One to note: One who continues to impress with quality wines at affordable prices is Apple Tree Flat’s Peter Logan, and his latest Shiraz, the 2012 is just the drop at this time of year to enjoy around the fire. Think about matching it with roast lamb. This drop has dark berry fruit flavours, a touch of earthiness, good acidity and some woody spiciness. It’s just $13.

Dogs still need their daily exercise so don’t use the cold as an excuse not to go for a walk

FEATURE STORY

Winter chills are felt by our furry friends too Reporter Katherine Tweed speaks to pet expert, veterinarian Liisa Ahlstrom, about some of the myths surrounding pet care in the colder months KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

Friday 4 July 2014 the western weekender • west life

W

hile we sit inside our homes of a winter evening, snuggling under a blanket, basking under the warmth of a heater and taking a little extra care of ourselves, our pets are outside shivering the night away. It is a common misconception that because pets have a layer of warm fur, they don’t feel the cold, but although their natural blanket does help, pets feel the chill of winter just as much as their human owners do and need extra care during the cooler months. The evenings in Penrith have just begun to have a real bite to them, with many parts of the local area covered by a blanket of frost come morning, which means that for outdoor pets the going has just begun to get tough.

“While we’re complaining about how cold we feel, we often forget that winter affects our pets too. We can add layers for warmth in response to the cold, but our pets aren’t able to do so. It is up to us as pet owners to understand our responsibility to make sure they are well looked after in the winter,” said Dr Liisa Ahlstrom, Bayer Technical Services Veterinarian. Although some pets are rarely allowed inside, the cold is a good excuse to let them join the family indoors. For pet owners who can’t face the thought of their dog running around inside, the laundry, which normally has access to outside, is the perfect place for a pet to escape the cold – even if it is just for the evening – as it is tiled and easy to clean. “While they would never purposely do so, our furry friends can pass on nasties such as worms and fleas to the rest of the family. Warm homes provide the perfect environment for fleas to breed. In order to keep the entire family safe, Advocate products provide the best all-in-one para-

site protection for your pet,” Dr Ahlstrom said. “If your pet is used to being outside, it is important they have enough stimulation inside. Make sure they have toys and activities to keep them busy for both mental stimulation and exercise.” Although the indoors is a great place for pets to keep warm, the option can be unrealistic for some families and pets may need to spend the night outside. “If your dog does need to stay outside it’s important to note that kennels, without added insulation and heat, are not always adequate shelter. Outdoor beds should be raised off the floor and be protected from the wind and rain. Create a cosy place for your pet to sleep and fill their kennel with clean, warm, dry blankets,” Dr Ahlstrom said. A hot water bottle filled with warm water can be a good addition to a pet’s kennel however experts warn that dogs who like to chew might find it to be a good play thing. “As rainfall increases during winter,

protection doses before socialising with other animals will be at a lesser risk of fleas and other parasites. “If your dog becomes wet from walking in the rain, dry them thoroughly and check between their paws to make sure they haven’t collected balls of mud,” Dr Ahlstrom said. Checking for mud and collections of dirt should be a normal part of a pet owner’s grooming routine, which often gets overlooked in the cooler months as well. “A common misconception is that because it is cold outside, a longer coat will keep your pet warm and, as such, grooming is not required in the winter months,” Dr Ahlstrom said. “In reality, longer coats are more prone to matting, which is detrimental to keeping your pet warm as the cover of fur is not evenly dispersed. A pet’s coat is imperative to their keeping warm and regular grooming will ensure their coat is in the best state.” Dr Ahlstrom also recommended that owners purchase coats or jackets to assist in keeping pets with coarse hair warm. “While every dog wants to look their best, make sure the jacket is functional, not just fashionable,” she said. A coat or a jumper is also a good way to assist older pets that struggle with arthritis, a condition that is known to flare up in older cats and dogs during the cooler months. “Signs of arthritis often develop slowly over time and can be misinterpreted by owners as their pets simply getting older, especially in cats. Arthritis often goes undetected in cats as they are naturally less active than dogs and hide their symptoms well,” Dr Ahlstrom said.

waterproof parasite protection, such as The Advantage Family products, is essential to make sure your pet stays protected,” Dr Ahlstrom said. Like people, dogs, cats and other creatures, just want to curl up and sleep the cold away and while it is easier to just let them do so, experts say pet owners must be aware of their animal’s health and fitness. According to experts, it is normal for pets to have an increased appetite during the winter months, especially for outdoor pets, as they use more energy to keep warm and this energy comes from what they eat. Any pet owner will admit that their furry friend is a little on the persuasive side, always happy to accept a few extra treats, but this can quickly lead to overfeeding, which is something to be avoided at all costs. In addition to overfeeding, pet owners can often get into a habit of using the cold as an excuse to not take their pet for a walk. Both overfeeding and a decrease in exercise can lead to weight gain in pets. “It’s important, where possible, to continue your pet’s regular exercise routine. Ensuring your dog gets out for at least 20 minutes each day will not only maintain their health and wellbeing but prevent boredom-related behaviour taking place inside later on,” Dr Ahlstrom said. It is recommended that pet owners take their animals for walks during the warmest parts of the day when the sun is out and the wind is low, which is the time of day people prefer to be out as well. many of the photoshopped images and in most of them, the photoshopper had added makeup, whether it be in the form of eye shadow, lipstick, mascara or blush. The photo sent back to Esther from Australia is not quite what I would have said is a typical Australian perception of beauty but it was along those lines. I don’t know what I was expecting to see when I came across the images but I really was amazed that different countries have such different perceptions. “They are intriguing and insightful in their own right; each one is a reflection of both the personal and cultural concepts of beauty that pertain to their creator,” Esther said on her blog. “Photoshop allows us to achieve our unobtainable standards of beauty, but when we compare those standards on a global scale, achieving the ideal remains all the more elusive.” I’d like to see the same image photoshopped by multiple people in the one country, to see if there really are trends from country to country, but for now, I am happy to be amazed. Check out the images at www.estherhonig.com.

Skin colour, eye lashes and even eye colour can vary in our perceptions of beauty

The question, ‘what makes a person beautiful?’ is often discussed, maybe not on a casual or every day basis but it is certainly one that has been pondered by the philosophical, intellectual, curious and average person throughout the ages. An answer is yet to be found and though many have claimed their definition of beauty is best, ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ seems as correct an answer as we’ll ever get – broad as it is, I think we need to cover all bases. I have occasionally pondered the question myself, thinking things like ‘what makes her attractive to him’ and wondering what makes individual people find different types of people beautiful. One thing that I have never really thought about is the different perceptions of beauty across the globe – does where we live have anything to do with what we consider to be beautiful. An American Journalist, Esther Honig, did consider this question and set out on a mission to discover if beauty is a global perception or one that differs from country to country. Esther sent a raw image of herself to people all around the world – after reading this I was already impressed... I’d never have the guts to send a makeup-less photo to someone I didn’t know – asking them to photo-shop the image... the only request she gave was “make me beautiful”. Gradually the photoshoppers, both professional and amateur, began to send back photos of her that they had ‘beautified’ according to their own perceptions. The results from country to country can only be described as very different, which was not what I was expecting at all. In the photo sent back to Esther from Argentina, her skin had been paled, her lips pinked, she was sporting thick eyelashes and well manicured eyebrows. She was sporting a colourful Hijab in the photo sent from Morocco and in the one from America, her hair had been removed from a bun, and replaced with long, flowing brown hair, her eyes were changed in shape and her face had been slimmed down. Her eye colour, which was normally brown, had been changed in

Tanzanite, the colour of the month The popularity of Tanzanite is fast overtaking most gemstones of a similar colour. At York Jewellers we have a wide range of this coveted stone; different intensities, shapes and sizes making for a great selection. For those of you born in December, you are lucky enough to have this rare gem as your birthstone. In 1967 Tanzanite was discovered in Tanzania, Africa and named by ‘Mr. Tiffany & Co’ himself’s great grandson Henry B Platt in 1968. It took the world by storm and continues to be a sought after gem! It must have something to do with the rich purple/violet blue colour. Not to be confused with sapphire or amethyst and not quite a mixture of both. It’s truly unique. To give you an idea of the rarity of this stone, imagine an area of four square kilometres. This is the size of the area where the world’s entire supply of Tanzanite is mined. A recent piece that we made using a stunning, pear shaped Tanzanite was custom designed as a birthday gift for the couple’s granddaughter. It was offset with a white diamond passed down through the family via generations and will no doubt become a family heirloom. When selecting your Tanzanite focus on intensity of colour, minimal inclusions within the stone and look for overall brilliance. If the stone has been cut well, even a very deep colour will show fire and sparkle. We have touched on it briefly in a previous article to keep in mind that Tanzanite is a little more susceptible to damage as it isn’t as hard as sapphire for example. Be sure to be careful when wearing your stone out and about and have it cleaned and checked regularly by a professional at York Jewellers to maintain its beauty and the strength of the setting.

BRETT WILLIAMS I can be a role model for my children

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

Top three tips for good health? 1. Make sure exercise is part of my regular routine, besides the physical benefits exercise for me helps with managing my stress. 2. Try to eat healthy where I can. My day has to start with breakfast and lunch is often on the run, so I try not to eat too

Why would an eightyear-old feel fat? DAVID STEIN Owner & Manager of Fitec david@ fitec.com.au

Kids that can more readily identify fast food brands generally have higher BMIs

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? I have young children and being fit means I have more fun with them and I can be a good role model for them as they grow up. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I play soccer in the local district competition and enjoy most sports, in the summer I try and keep fit by running and mountain bike riding.

much take away for lunch. 3. Find a General Practitioner you have confidence in, stick with them and see them early if something isn’t quite right. A daily ‘must do’? A “to do list” prioritising work tasks against the many other demands on life to ensure I get the work/life balance right. Biggest health/fitness misconception?

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy.’ I have slumps just like everyone, days where it’s too cold, too hot, or I’m too tired. That’s the beauty of team sports for me, as a member of a team there is a commitment to fellow team mates, so that always helps. Anything else? This month I’m doing Dry July to raise funds for Nepean Cancer Care. I’m not a big drinker but it’s going to be a bit challenging as we’re taking a family holiday for 10 days to Queensland. Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The number of overweight children in Australia has doubled in recent years, with a quarter of children considered overweight or obese; and alarmingly it seems like some children are stressing themselves out about it and taking matters into their own hands. A study shows kids as young as eight are dissatisfied with their bodies. And the majority of 10- and 11-year-olds are trying to control their weight. The report by the Australian Institute of Family Studies examined more than 4,000 children around the country. It found more than half of all the children they spoke to wanted a body size a bit thinner than the average. A large number of eight to nine-year-old boys and girls were dissatisfied with their body size with many children wanting to be thinner than the average body size. Why would an eight-year-old feel fat? It makes me wonder about the external influences our kids are subjected to from things like media ads, movies, tiny waisted barbie dolls or the hugely muscled action figures. Kids are sadly being guided on what is a ‘normal’ body type. Interestingly another study from the University of Oregon showed the more your kids know about fast food brands the more likely they are to be overweight. The relationship between brand knowledge and body mass index (BMI) is “quite robust” says the report. Researchers tested children aged three to five on their knowledge of various brands, including their ability to identify fast food logos and found that those who could identify them the most tended to have higher BMIs. Remember your kids take in information constantly and can have difficulty separating fact from fiction. If you’re not influencing the decisions and information your child learns and acts upon, there are plenty of companies that are too happy to help them make their mind up, and profit beats health on their priority list.

That diets work. I work with some pretty smart people but am constantly surprised at what they will or won’t eat in an attempt to lose weight. Too often the physical activity component of the equation seems to be overlooked.

life & style

How does fitness feature in your life? I am employed by Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District as part of the Executive Team in the role of Director of Allied Health and also the General Manager Primary Care and Community Health. My professional background is as a Physiotherapist with post graduate qualifications in management. Sport and physical activity has always been an important part of life for me with my career starting as a PE teacher. I still play soccer and have done so from a young age and played a variety of other competitive sports including squash and basketball. I am also the father of three young daughters aged 3, 4 and 9 and my wife is a health professional also. A large amount of our weekends are taken up doing family things, taking the girls to sport, learn to swim and an endless number of birthday parties. As the girls have got older the busyness of life generally has increased exponentially and down time has become increasingly rare. Having said that life for me right now is pretty good, being both challenging and immensely rewarding.

You’re very good at avoiding things you don’t want to do. But the nutty professor or blonde bimbo routine usually fools no-one, as your innate intelligence is hard to hide. Shirking responsibilities won’t work this week. If you want to stay out of trouble, then roll up your sleeves and do what you’re supposed to do.

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Don’t let shyness or lack of confidence stand in the way of forming lasting connections with others. It’s a fabulous week to nurture friendships and tell loved ones how you feel. Recognising the difference between fact and fantasy will help you keep it real. With Venus visiting your domestic zone do your best to foster happy vibes at home.

Many Aries are famous for being pioneers in their chosen fields (like Leonardo da Vinci, Bette Davis, Marlon Brando and Diana Ross). This week, under the influence of unpredictable Uranus, strive to be intelligent and inventive, rather than disruptive and domineering. The weekend is wonderful for love, romance, friendship, family fun and socialising with colleagues.

Don’t rush in with guns blazing this week Lions. The Full Moon and Saturn urge you to focus on practical matters and finish details properly before you embark on new projects. So it’s a terrific time to tackle domestic chores. Listen to Henry David Thoreau: “Haste makes waste, no less in life than in housekeeping.”

Star predictions for the week beginning July 6

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Uranus unsettles your usual routine early in the week. Then tempers fray and patience wears thin on Saturday, when the Full Moon falls in your home zone. So it’s not a good time to get the long lost relatives together or bring up sensitive issues with fractious family members. Sunday’s Venus/Mars trine is super for love, romance and socialising with your favourite friends.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Communication of all kinds is highlighted this week, from reading and writing to social networking, studying, discussing and debating. Travel is also likely (especially short trips) but try to slip out of Scorpio control-freak mode and into flexible mode, as plans are likely to be altered at the last minute.

Professional projects and close friends are also a messy mix. Follow John Rockefeller: “A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship.”

Your people-pleasing powers are stuck on high this week, as vivacious Venus boosts your charisma. You’ll be at your persuasive best as you charm the birds out of the trees and inspire others with your passion and enthusiasm. Use it to your advantage – but don’t abuse it. Sunday is super for group activities and social get-togethers.

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Are you experiencing problems with a partner (of the romantic, business or platonic variety)? Drop the “I’m right” attitude and strive to communicate in more consultative ways as you inspire others with your ambitious ideas, networking skills and community spirit. It’s also time to review your goals and re-jig your dreams.

What did you want to be when you grew up? This week I wanted to dedicate this column to a topic that is very close to my heart. Most of us are able to choose what we want to be when we grow up. But due to illness, many kids aren’t so lucky. BOQ is holding its annual Banking on our Kids appeal and funds raised will go directly to research, better treatment and ultimately cures through Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia, who support five kids hospitals nationwide including Sydney Children’s Hospital. Money raised previously from this campaign helped buy Sydney Children’s Hospital a much needed PET scanner, which provides faster and more accurate diagnoses for children with cancer and brain disorders such as epilepsy. We believe every child should be able to look forward to a happy and healthy future which is why every July we call on the Penrith community to help support our Banking on our Kids appeal. Since it began in 2004, Banking on our Kids has raised more than $1,000,000 and this year we aim to raise another $300,000. Make a difference to our kids by donating to the Banking on Our Kids appeal. Visit the BOQ website www.boq.com.au/kids or drop into any BOQ branch.

Penrith RSL is supporting Little Wings, who are a not-for-profit organisation that provides a free flight and transportation service for children with serious, life-threatening medical conditions from rural and regional NSW to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

The Little Wings Flight Program provides free air transport to seriously ill children and their carers who, for geographical or medical reasons are not suited to commercial air, road or rail transport. For example a child may live a long distance from an airport with a commercial air service, or a child’s medical condition or depleted immune system may make it dangerous to travel on public transport, or undertake long distance car travel. Children are accepted into the Little Wings Flight Program after recommendation from their medical specialist.

Some pet medications can cause worsening signs of dementia

VET

VIEW FROM ABOVE

Doggy dementia is a common illness

Dealing with anxiety by trusting in God

Dementia in dogs, or Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD), is sadly a fact of life for many ageing dogs. After bringing us many years of love and joy, our dogs inevitably start to slow down and show their age. CCD is a degenerative neurological condition in dogs which is similar to dementia in humans. It results in a gradual and progressive loss of brain function. Unfortunately this disease is very common and at least 25 per cent of dogs older than 10 years of age show one of the signs associated with brain ageing. By 15 years of age, more than 60 per cent of dogs are affected by CCD. However, there are treatment options that can help your ageing dog. The first indication that there is something wrong with your dog is generally a change in its behaviour. These behavioural changes can be due to behavioural problems or medical problems such as heart disease, pain and arthritis, incontinence, sensory problems (blindness or deafness), endocrine disease (diabetes), brain disease (cancer) or metabolic disease (renal failure). There are also some medications such as steroids and medicine for incontinence than can cause worsening of signs associated with CCD. It is essential that animals are examined by a veterinarian to rule out medical problems before a diagnosis of doggy dementia is made. So what are the signs of CCD? Most of the signs of a decline in brain function relate to your pet’s behaviour. You may find that your animal becomes disorientated or confused, and house training and other learned behaviours may be lost – for example, you may find your dog forgets where the food/water bowls are or starts to soil in the house. Interactions with family members and sleep patterns may change so you may find that your dog wakes up and paces through the night. Some animals may become anxious, agitated or irritable and some dogs will even develop aggression. What can we do about CCD? Adjusting the environment is important in making older animals comfortable; you may need to leave a dim light on for toilet trips, section of unsafe areas of the house or leave soft music on when you are out.

There is much that can make people anxious; concern about robbery, being alone, our children’s safety, starting something new, failure, being found out, the future, lack of money, sickness, and ultimately the fear of death. People’s anxieties can simply pile up, one on top of another. If you weren’t anxious before you read all these things, then you probably are now! Anxiety can badly affect people. It can cause depression, restlessness, worry, irritability, tension, headaches, sleepless nights, even nightmares. It can make people feel uncertain, ashamed, guilty or angry. It can even lead to anorexia and stress related sicknesses such as increased blood pressure and heart disease. No wonder people crack up, or simply want to escape as anxiety becomes too much! How can we deal with anxiety? The Bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything but pray about everything, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus.” What a wonderful encouragement! As we learn to trust that God cares for us, we can pray to Him about everything, even the smallest details! This is the first step to deal with anxiety. Even though there is much to be anxious about there is a solution! As we grow in our understanding that God is totally trustworthy we can give Him all our worries and He can handle them. As we develop our trust in God through knowing Jesus he gives us the peace beyond human understanding.

Warsaw in Poland is claiming title to having the world’s narrowest house – it’s just 72cm at its narrowest point and 122cm at its widest, and is jammed into an alleyway between two huge commercial buildings in Warsaw’s once Jewish Ghetto district. Architect Jakub Szczesny designed the home as part of a cultural event supported by the City Council, propping it on legs as an “elevated insert” between its imposing neighbours. Access is by way of a stairway that leads direct into a diminutive kitchen with adjoining bathroom and ensuite, and from the kitchen a ladder goes up to a bedroom just big enough for a wall-

to-wall single bed and a desk, while a 45-degree sloping glass roof allows light into the place (that otherwise has only one tiny window). And after trying to envisage just who could live in such seemingly impossible confinement, and deciding that it would be someone who liked to spend time alone, the house is being provided free to visiting writers doing research work in Warsaw. Originally intending to keep the house for just two years as somewhat of a curiosity and publicity-generator, the Council says that if sufficient writers want to visit Warsaw, they may keep “the world’s narrowest house” permanently.

as cabinet heaters are an extremely dangerous, banned appliance however many homes still contain these items. “These non-compliant heaters are extremely dangerous,” Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said. “If you see one of these products in the market place, do not purchase it. back to the place of purchase for a refund. “Cabinet gas heaters that do not meet Australian Standards are flawed in their design and prone to malfunction, causing them to burst into flames.” Mr Stowe said Fair Trading requested eBay to remove the dangerous heaters from its site last June. The heaters have also been found in local markets and offered for sale on other online sites. Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said the heaters were extremely dangerous because they use LPG cylinders. “LPG cylinders are not designed to be used indoors and you are putting yourself and your family at serious risk if you choose to bring them inside,” he said.

A tasty treat for theatre lovers veryone loves food. And so far audiences have also loved ‘Food’, a delicious theatre production from Steve Rodgers that’s set to win some new fans during its run at the Joan this July. The play brings together multiple elements, including drama, dance, comedy and cookery, all the ingredients needed for an enjoyable night at the theatre. ‘Food’ is not only based on the culinary but also revolves around themes of sensuality, love and sex. It follows the lives of two sisters, Elma, played by Mel King and Nancy, played by Emma Jackson. Their home is a remote truck stop where Elma has lived her whole life, cooking up the typical fried takeaway food that travellers love to devour on road trips across the country. Younger sister Nancy left years ago to see the world, seeking out freedom and sex rather than sticking with the familiarity of her childhood home. When she finally returns the sisters lives are changed as they meet a charming young Turkish traveller, Hakan, played by Fayssal Bazzi. The piece combines words and movement, drawing audiences into the lives of the sisters as they transform their little tuckshop into a restaurant to showcase Elma’s culinary gifts. This is a production that delves into the world of food but it’s much more than
