om Burlinson is clearly no stranger to performing the music of Frank Sinatra. Having created the show ‘Frank – A Life in Song’ in 1998 the talented entertainer is back with a new performance based on the classic 1966 Sinatra live album ‘Sinatra at the Sands’.

Premiering at Evan Theatre on Saturday, October 18, the show will bring some of Ol’ Blue Eyes most loved songs to life. Choosing the album – which includes ‘Come Fly With Me’, ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’, ‘It Was a Very Good Year’ and ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ – was a no brainer for Burlinson. “There’s a beautiful mixture between the swing stuff and the more ballad type things,” he said. “It just completely works, it just works and that’s why we decided to have a go at trying to touch the magic that was created that night.” The album was recorded at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas with the Count Basie Orchestra and was conducted by music icon Quincy Jones. After having to scale back his band during regional tours, Burlinson is looking forward to recreating the big band sound on stage with his talented collection of musicians, which make up his All Star Big Band, and says he aims to give audiences an authentic experience. “I’ll be trying to give a very clear impression of Sinatra’s vocal style and – to a certain extent – of his performance style without pretending to be him,” he said. It’s clear from just witnessing the time Burlinson has dedicated to these shows that there is something about the much loved Sinatra that he really connects with. Asked about where this love came from, Burlinson recalls this passion for Sinatra’s music starting at a very young age. “My mother tells me that when I was a toddler I would point at this album that she had called ‘The Swingin’ Affair!’ and it was one of Sinatra’s albums from the late 1950s and I would point to the photo on the album cover and say ‘play the man in the hat, let’s play the man in the hat’,” he said. “There was something about the music, something about the man’s voice that grabbed me when I was very young. “When I was older I rediscovered that
album and then became an avid Sinatra fan.” While Burlinson admits he has explored other music in the style he calls ‘vocal swing’, Sinatra’s interpretation of songs, his musicality, personality and emotional connection with the material was what kept Burlinson going back to the musical great. “You often got an impression that Sinatra had experienced, or sometimes even was experiencing, what he was singing about so for me it really gets me involved as it has with millions of other people over the years,” he said. Though his current focus is on the music side of things Burlinson is a NIDA graduate who first got his start in the industry as an actor; working across TV, film and theatre. He has starred in films such as 1983’s ‘Phar Lap: Heart of a Nation’ and 2011’s ‘The Cup’. More recently Burlinson appeared as a judge on the hit TV show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ from 2007 to 2009. But his most recognisable role was also one of his first, as the lead in the 1982 film ‘The Man from Snowy River’. “Snowy will always be very close to my heart because it was a tremendous career break for me as a young actor,” he said. “I wanted to get into an Australian film and boy I got into one that, although we didn’t know it at the time, became hugely successful and very much loved to this day by people not only in Australia but in different countries around the world.” “That has to be at the top of my list for memorable pieces of work.” Looking towards the future Burlinson says he would love to get back to where his career started. “I’d love to do some more acting work of course, that was my first love I guess and that’s the good thing about being an actor; you can continue to do it until you’re old if you get the parts,” he laughed. But at the end of the day what Burlinson is most thankful for is the opportunity to have a long term career in an industry he is clearly passionate about, something that isn’t easy in an industry where the work can be few and far between. “I think myself very fortunate to have been able to continue to work in show business for such a long time because it’s kind of rare in this country.” ‘Tom Burlinson performs Sinatra at the Sands’ will be on at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, October 18. Tickets are $42.82. To purchase tickets visit www.premier. ticketek.com.au or for more information call 4720 5555.

ooking at his list of achievements it’s clear that Irish performer Bobby Fox can do it all. His skills in singing, dancing and acting place him firmly in the triple threat category, which has no doubt been the reason why Bobby has earned roles across a range of highly acclaimed musical theatre and dance productions, along with TV and movie roles. KATE REID @kate_reid6
Heading out on tour this October, Bobby will be bringing his singing talents to Rooty Hill RSL, performing songs from his album ‘The Fantastic Mr Fox’, which features tracks from some of the greats including Nat King Cole, Elvis, Dean Martin and The Coasters. Audiences will get the chance to see two concerts in one with Bobby also performing hits from the musical ‘Jersey Boys’, in which he took on the role of Frankie Valli after having the honour of being hand picked by the man himself to play the leading part. Along with ‘Jersey Boys’ Bobby’s musical theatre resume includes roles in ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘Dusty – The Original Pop Diva’. With a list like that it’s pretty clear that Bobby Fox has some serious theatre skills. But it’s not just about musical theatre, Bobby has had the chance to show off his dancing skills touring with Irish productions including the hugely successful ‘Riverdance’, along with ‘To Dance on the Moon’ and ‘Dangerous Ground’. The talented entertainer was also given an opportunity that many men, and women, could only dream of; the chance to work with gorgeous Aussie model Miranda Kerr. 25th anniversary of Amazing Race Good news for fans of E! show ‘Fashion Police’ with the show to return to screens despite the death of host Joan Rivers. The comedy legend tragically died last month after surgery gone wrong with many predicting the hit show would end with Rivers no longer there. However, Melissa Rivers, the show’s producer and Rivers’ daughter confirmed ‘Fashion Police’ would return. a
Still on ‘Fashion Police’ and there were rumours circulating last week that a good friend of Joan Rivers and a super popular comedian in her own right, Kathy Griffin, may be the woman to replace her. I personally think this would be a fantastic choice! She’s edgy, funny and Rivers would certainly approve of her continuing her hilarious legacy.
A new primetime variety show will launch next year with producers searching for “Australia’s most entertaining act”. Sounds a bit like ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ in disguise but I’m told its brand new concept. For info visit fmashows.com.
SBS is famous for its late night movies featuring sex, horror and everything in between. Now the network has announced its SBS On Demand service will expand to offer over 400 movies free to viewers. Films will be available for a year with titles added monthly.
Louis Theroux, my favourite journalist/ documentary maker, is back on Foxtel next week with an all new series titled ‘LA Stories’. The three-part special will begin on Monday, October 13 at 9.30pm on BBC Knowledge and continue on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Lastly, a brand new season of the American version of ‘The Amazing Race’ begins on Channel Seven tonight at 11pm. The new series comes off the back of a great end to the Australian version which wrapped up last week. The US version of ‘The Amazing Race’ is now in its 25th season.

Scottish rock band Deacon Blue have just released their seventh album ‘A New House’. The band formed in Glasgow in 1985 and have gained both fan and critical admiration through their almost three decade career. Things haven’t always run smoothly for Deacon Blue. After splitting in 1994, the band had a five year break before reuniting in 1999 with the album ‘Walking Back Home’. Since then they have had several releases including the predecessor to ‘A New House’, 2012’s ‘The Hipsters’. ‘A New House’ is a 10 track album that includes a title track worthy of a summer roadtrip. Listening to the track you can almost feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your skin. ‘An Ocean’ is just as cheery; in fact on listening to tracks from the entire album you get an overwhelmingly optimistic feeling. This playful, happy sound is perfectly summed up by the album’s cover art, a fitting introduction to what listeners can expect from ‘A New House’. The album revolves around the theme of nature, which is evident through the lyrical content that speaks of fields, meadows and sunlight.

Raise a pint to patriot New road to cemetery sees Irish pub resurrected and last another 180 years DAVID ELLIS
hile Irish patriot Daniel O’Connell is most remembered for his fight for Catholic emancipation, Catholics’ rights to sit in the Westminster Parliament, and repeal of the Parliamentary Act that combined Great Britain with Ireland, drinkers at a pub in Dublin raise their pints to him today for a far more bizarre reason. Three times an MP, and for two years Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1841-42, the philosophies of Daniel O’Connell have also been quoted as inspiring Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and even English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. But it is drinkers at Kavanagh’s Pub on Prospect Square in Dublin who today salute O’Connell for more down-to-earth reasons: ensuring that their watering-hole stands 180 years after it’s almost certain
W

demise. Kavanagh’s is certainly worthy of a visit if ever you are heading to the Irish capital, both for that history and the fact it’s been run by six generations of the one family since 1835. A John O’Neill opened the pub on the then outskirts of Dublin in 1833, hopeful that he could cash-in on the year old Glasnevin Cemetery next door by hosting wakes for the bereaved, and even stepping in as an impromptu undertaker. But although the gates to the cemetery were so close to his pub, the people never came. Enter O’Neill’s friend O’Connell, who offered to help the publican attract customers from the thousands of Dubliners who would ultimately have loved-ones buried in the Glasnevin Cemetery. And O’Connell did so in a most bizarre way: he lobbied the government to have a new road built from Dublin to the cemetery, passing right by the pub. So appreciative was the grateful publican that when that road was finally opened, he declared that the only beer served would be O’Connell’s Ale… which just happened to be brewed by the son of Daniel O’Connell. O’Neill prospered, but after just two years handed over the business to his son-in-law John Kavanagh when the latter married O’Neill’s daughter Suzanne. The pub then took the younger man’s name and has been John Kavanagh’s ever since. Current publican, Eugene Kavanagh is the sixth generation of the lineage. If you’re visiting Dublin and taking a few at Kavanagh’s, drop into the cemetery as well to see the graves of the likes of onetime Ireland President Eamon de Valera, poet Brendan Behan, Home Rule advocate Charles Stewart Parnell and Luke Kelly of the iconic folk group, The Dubliners.

hen winemaker Peter Logan married Hannah Murphie back in October 2003 he had a special surprise for her: he’d created a Rosé for the day he labelled Hannah, and not only had it served at their wedding reception, but gave a bottle to every guest... Today it rates as one of the most popular labels from Peter and Hannah’s Logan Winery at Orange (and where Hannah, incidentally, is now General Manager). A blend of 52 per cent Pinot Meunier, 21 per cent Shiraz, 15 per cent Cabernet France and 12 per cent Pinot Gris, the latest release 2014 Hannah is a lovely, easy-drinking drop; one its namesake says she loves for its, “freshness, red fruit and spice flavours, appetite-whetting brininess, and a crunchy finish that makes you want just a little more.” It also has a nice touch of refreshing tannin. At $23 you’ll find it delightful with pastas and accompanying tomato-based sauces, a range of pizzas with tomato and mushroom influences – and with our favourite Rosé match, Indian curries. One to note: Tim Adams has released a 2014 Tim Adams Pinot Gris that’s his tenth as he continues his vision of creating a benchmark Pinot Gris from the Clare Valley. Pinot Gris was virtually unknown in the Clare when Tim planted his first vines, and today he can be proud of what he’s achieved in the development of this wonderfully food-friendly drop. His just-released 2014 has dominant pear, lychee and peach flavours, and sells at $20 a bottle.

Fillies get their frocks on for Fernhill Races KATHERINE TWEED
life & style
Performer and Picnics ambassador, Brittanie Shipway will be sitting on the Fashions on the Field judging panel and she’s shared a couple of insider tips. “This spring, pastels are in and the dreadful flouro is banished back to the eighties,” she said. “I will be looking for textured gowns and creative designs. I’ll be wearing a gorgeous gown from Smik at Rouse Hill and will team it with a pair of cowboy boots for a bit of country flair.” Registration for the competition will be from 10am to midday at the Picnics Main Stage and every contestant will receive a free gift. Fashion partner, Luv My Bag, which is a new Penrithbased online company, is powering the competition and event supporter, local Mulgoa boutique, La Petite Maison, is offering a $500 gift voucher for the most outstanding headpiece, to be chosen by boutique owner, Fiona Wentworth. The best dressed will of course be showered with wonderful prizes. Tickets are now on sale with prices starting from $30, or $40 on the day. You can book at www.fernhillpicnics.com.au. Gates open from 10am.

Style eloquence and country finesse combine at the picnic races at Fernhill Estate
I couldn’t care less about horse racing; the races themselves are repetitive, I’m not a gambler and the crowds really frustrate me but there is something about being in a place where everyone is dressed in their very best. The races give us the rare opportunity to dress with class, dress with style and dress to impress – three things that when put together are only acceptable for wear on two types of occasions; at weddings and the races. Men can throw on their suits and ties, slip into their expensive leather dress shoes and choose a shirt that will have the ladies nodding in approval, but the real excitement is for the women. We have a bounty of dresses to choose from, or skirt and shirt ensembles, and then come the fascinators, hats and other headwear items, the beautiful shoes, the stand out clutches and of course, the accessories. While it is fun to get dressed up, what makes races fashion so much more exciting is the competitions, which is why I was thrilled to learn that at the Fernhill Picnic Races this month there will be the Luv My Bag Fashions on the Field competition. With a couple of weeks to go before the event (coming up on Saturday, October 18) there is still some time for local ladies to come up with a winning ensemble. But to stand out from the crowd, you will need to do some clever planning. Picnic races are not your standard stilletto-and-designer event, which is why choosing an outfit will take not just time but some brains! Of course, the winning outfit will be well designed and will feature a magnificent head piece, but the judges will be keeping a keen eye out for the woman who dresses best for the occasion. The Picnics offer the perfect opportunity to blend some country style into classic race-day fashion but it has to be the right elements of both that are brought before the judges – leave those stilettos at home honey, have you ever tried to walk through a field in them? It doesn’t work. Play around with different looks to try and channel your inner country – I assure you, the judges will be watching.

Win a pink and white diamond pendant and support breast cancer nurses
WW11781
York Jewellers goes pink for a good cause For the month of October at York Jewellers we are going pink. We have teamed up with our good friends at Pink Kimberley and also our new friends at the McGrath Foundation to offer some support, raise awareness and donations for a very worthy cause. First, a couple of facts that I wasn’t aware of: breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst women in Australia and one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. We all have mothers, sisters, partners, friends and family who have been affected by this disease in one way or another, directly or indirectly. What do we have happening and how can you get involved? For the whole month of October we will have raffle tickets available for purchase in-store for you to go in the draw to win a Pink Kimberley Argyle pink and white diamond pendant with a chain valued at a huge $13,500. This pendant is simply stunning and we are looking forward to seeing it go to a good home for a great cause! The raffle will be drawn on the 31st of October at close of business and all proceeds from ticket sales go to the McGrath Foundation. In addition to this, every piece of Pink Kimberley fine jewellery that is purchased at York Jewellers in October will see 10 per cent of the retail price donated to the McGrath Foundation. You’ll also receive five complimentary raffle tickets and go in the draw to win the pendant. We will be holding a special event in store on the evening of October 8th where we will be offering exclusive discounts to our exclusive guests along with 10 per cent of all sales on the night being donated to the McGrath Foundation. Our VIP guests will include McGrath Foundation ambassador and Director Tracey Bevan, along with our very own local hero and world champion athlete Jessica Fox. We will be serving pink champagne and canapés for our guests to enjoy and will have live music by Jaz Houlligan. If you would like to attend the evening please contact me at matthew@yorkjewellers.com.au and I would be more than happy to extend an invitation to you.
15 Elevate your success by entering the 2014 Women With Altitude Awards
The Emerging Talent Award: Sponsored by The Western Weekender New talent doesn’t just happen, it needs to be nurtured, encouraged and cultivated. To ensure the best new talent in Western Sydney stays in Western Sydney, The Western Weekender is sponsoring our Emerging Talent Award. Troy Dodds of the Western Weekender says: The Western Weekender has for more than two decades profiled the success stories of our region – and it’s an honour to sponsor an award that looks at some of the most outstanding new talent we have. Experience is one thing, but raw passion and enthusiasm is another – and new, fresh talent always offers this. During the formative years of our newspaper encouragement and support from local businesses was crucial to our growth and success which is why The Western Weekender is proud to be involved with this award and concept.
Retail Therapy/Business Retailer of the Year: Sponsored by CBD Corporation WOW what women doesn’t love shopping and retail Therapy…. Penrith CBD Corporation has an
office of 3 women working with a strong board to activate, rejuvenate and help small business grown in the Penrith CBD. We are proud to sponsor for the 2nd year The 2014 Altitude Awards especially our category of Retailer of the year. We believe in our retailers & all the women in altitude members and want them to shine in the limelight of this year’s awards. We appreciate the effort & work that many of our retailers who wear the “Super cape” do every day running their on-line or retail business. Retail isn’t the easiest business to manage, especially in the economic ups and downs not only from consumers wants and needs but also the government changes or should I say challenges. Awards remind our retailers to ensure their competitive edge for their business is important. Customer service, business planning, an eye for detail and that little extra over their competitors will win then not only awards but more importantly the customers loyal business for many years to come. As a finalist in the 2013 WWA Complete Recruitment Solutions Visionary Leader Award I truly recommend the experience and opportunities for your business. We wish all the finalist for 2014 good luck and can’t wait to meet you at the luncheon in December.

HOROSCOPES

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Peace and harmony are a far away dream this week Libra, as the Lunar Eclipse, Pluto and Uranus stir up problems with partnerships – of the romantic and platonic variety. Expect the unexpected, and try to stay calm. With the Sun, Venus and retrograde Mercury all visiting your sign, comfort eating is a danger.
The Lunar Eclipse is in your sign, so aim to be a pioneer. Perhaps an eco-warrior or peace activist? Be inspired by fellow Aries, Fred Hollows, who restored eyesight to people in third world countries. He encouraged others ,“To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition.”
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Being super possessive about a person or material possession will only lead to a whole lot of trouble this week. So strive to be less precious about what you own and who you love. Attached Bulls, your partner is looking to you for some sensible advice. Singles, you’re attracting a few flirtatious admirers, but make them prove themselves.
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

A situation with a child, teenager, lover or friend looks chaotic, as you misinterpret their actions. Ask for some clarification before you jump to hasty and half-baked conclusions! Keep in mind that Mercury is retrograde until October 26. Cooperation and clear communication will get you a lot further than confusion and confrontation, so aim to be a gracious and genial Gemini.
Star predictions for the week beginning October 5
CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
Mid-week looks intense as the Lunar Eclipse and Venus/Pluto square stir up inner compulsions, submerged secrets and hidden resentments. Plus you could become possessive about a person, possession or place. Strive to keep things in perspective. By the time the weekend comes around, you’ll be in high spirits.
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Prepare to inspire others with your high spirits and contagious enthusiasm! You’re at your bouncy and buoyant best, as Jupiter boosts confidence levels and puts extra wind in your Sagittarian sails. But your affections are changeable and erratic, as you do too many things and catch up with too many people. By all means have fun but you’ll have a more pleasurable week if you pace yourself.
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Crabs will be anything but congenial this week as the Lunar Eclipse cranks up your cantankerous, crabby side – and volatile Sun/Venus/Uranus/Mercury aspects highlight worries at work or havoc at home. So you’ll need to be on your toes! Plus do your best to avoid stressful situations and people who push your emotional buttons.
Family fiascos have got your head in a perpetual spin but do your best to sort out simmering domestic dramas. A relative will be anything but reasonable so strive to be cool, calm and collected. Your motto for the moment is from, Desmond Tutu, “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”
LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
The Lunar Eclipse causes chaos mid-week, as Lions lurch from one drama to another. If you are too hasty you could find yourself headed for an argument or accident so pace yourself, and take particular care when walking and driving – no distractions! Fabulous aspects on Friday/Saturday put an extra spring in your step.
Expect the sparks to fly this week, as the Lunar Eclipse fires up emotions and Uranus heats up your hasty, rebellious side. If you must be a rebel, try to be one with a worthy cause. Plus slow down… otherwise you’re likely to over-react and do something that you later regret. When it comes to aspirations, you’re feeling restless.
VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Retrograde Mercury continues to confuse communication until October 26 so be extra careful when talking, texting and sending messages. But, if you obsess over minor matters too much, then you’ll overlook the bigger picture. As birthday great John Lennon sang, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”

Boost staff morale and engagement at work Employee engagement is one of the most influential factors for business productivity. If your employees aren’t focused on their work, then your enterprise can struggle to maintain profitability and you may soon see your business finances falling. As the sun comes out and the temperature rises, keeping your workers on task can become increasingly difficult. In fact, a recent infographic by startup advisory firm Grasshopper revealed that one in four office workers (25 per cent) admit that their productivity drops in the summer months. More than two-thirds of these workers (68 per cent) agree that their work suffers due to a desire to daydream. So, how can you reverse the drop in productivity as temperatures rise? Here are some key tips to get you started: Cut Friday short The extreme drop in productivity has been recorded in a number of studies, including a recent report from our Kiwi neighbours. Commissioned by Mitre 10 and conducted by Colmar Brunton, the research found the average New Zealand worker shifts into a lower gear by 3.30pm, finishes their work by 4.04pm and completely switches off by 5pm. By adding flexibility to your Friday hours, you can not only improve morale but may even get to extend your own weekend as well! Encourage vacations While letting employees leave may not sound like the best idea for increasing the amount of work done, encouraging workers to take vacations is key to ensuring your business keeps running at full steam. Holidays will leave your staff feeling recharged and motivated. Boost the working environment For some businesses, it is impossible to embrace working outside. If you need your employees to remain indoors during their shifts, the best way to protect engagement and productivity levels is to ensure the interior is a comfortable environment. Consider introducing plants, natural light and air conditioning into the office or store. This will help workers concentrate due to the increased airflow and natural additions.

I see people get so caught up in what is the best exercise or routine to do. Magazines are full of articles saying which fancy exercises to do in what order, and to do four sets or exactly 15 reps. No wonder people get confused... it’s easy to think, ‘what happens if I do 16 reps, do my arms fall off?’ The magazines show some barbie-doll or he-man doing complicated exercises like sitting balanced with your legs in the air, swinging a medicine ball from side to side. Then they throw in words like core or functional. Maybe I don’t get out enough, but I can’t remember the last time I was sitting on the ground then needed to lift my legs up and swing a weight side to side, so that’s not really a functional movement. I’ll let you in on a secret... if you want to get a bit fitter, just walk around every day; go out and pick a specific route e.g. the bridge to bridge down at the Nepean River. Time how long it takes you to walk it the first time. Rest a day or two, now on the second time try to get a bit quicker; the third time a bit quicker again. Likewise for strength, if you want to get stronger, get a heavy weight and lift it as many times as you can until you can’t lift another one safely. It’s not rocket science but it is science. As your walking or running times get quicker you will get fitter. After you rest and you can lift a bit more weight you are getting stronger. It’s called progressive overload. Each time you finish feeling a little bit tired your body recovers to where you started but then, very importantly, a little bit more! For example, have you ever worked with a shovel and rubbed the skin away on your hands? After you rest it the skin repairs thicker than it was, forming a callous, so next time it can handle even more work. Your body is made to move and improve, so go do something you like, make it fun and watch your body adapt and improve. Don’t sit there reading those magazines, spending more time trying to figure out what they mean, compared to how long you actually plan to exercise for!
How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy.’ Remembering my young children look up to me and that laying a healthy foundation for them is something I choose to make count as they grow are important motivational thoughts for me.

Be patient when implementing healthier lifestyle habits and surround yourself with positive people who are active in supporting you.

Nasty disease for dogs is common in summer
Dealing with disappointment
Now that we are coming into the warmer months, the incidence of parvovirus in dogs increases. This deadly disease is common in the Penrith area but is easily preventable! Has your dog been vaccinated over the last 12 months? If not your dog could be at risk of contracting Canine Parvovirus. Parvovirus is shed from the faeces of an infected dog, into the soil. We can walk this virus into the backyard on our shoes. It has been recently discovered that other species can contract the virus and not be affected, but shed it in their stools. Flies are also possible carriers of this infection. Even dogs living in their own backyards are not isolated from this infection. Dogs that become infected with the virus will usually start to shed the virus within three or four days of contracting it, but will not be showing any symptoms. They become ill within seven to 14 days after exposure. Unlike most other viruses, parvovirus is stable in the environment and is resistant to the effects of heat, detergents and alcohol. Symptoms of parvovirus can vary in each individual dog, but generally we see severe vomiting, diarrhoea (often full of blood), lethargy and inappetence. This can lead to severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and infection in the bloodstream. An often aggressive and expensive treatment regime of intravenous fluids containing electrolytes, antibiotics, pain relief and anti-nausea medications are given to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalances and to make the dog more comfortable. Young, severely dehydrated puppies are at the highest risk of not responding favourably to treatment, and may die despite treatment efforts. The best method of protecting your dog against parvovirus is a full Vaccination Program. At Coreen Ave Vet Clinic we will tailor an individual vaccination program depending on your dog’s individual circumstances and breed. Call us today if you want to find out more about parvovirus or book in for a vaccination program.
Despite a great season and despite performing well above the expectations of many of the critics – and despite fielding a team that for much of the season had many regulars out injured – the mighty Panthers season came to an end on Saturday night. They never gave up, yet, unfortunately, they could not take advantage of their chances and some crucial errors meant they were behind on the scoreboard. The disappointment in the face of the players at missing the Grand Final was there to see. The players have already spoken of using this disappointment as motivation for season 2015! Footy may only be a game, yet it does raise the question, “How do we handle disappointment?” Many people dream of being able to achieve something; hoping life will work out a certain way, only to have their dreams crushed. They are then full of disappointment. How do we handle that disappointment? In the Bible, in the Apostle Paul’s second letter to the people living in Greek city of Corinth, Paul wrote about some of the hardships he had experienced. He said, “We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death.” That sounds pretty tough! How did Paul deal with it? He continues, “But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. On him we have set our hope.” Life can throw huge disappointments at us, but the Bible’s message is don’t give up, rely, trust in God, who can even raise the dead! Set your hope on him and you will not be disappointed!

Although it’s got a population of a little over 3,000, the NSW Southern Highlands village of Bundanoon holds an annual event that’s the champion of many local charities. Because it’s annual ‘Bundanoon is Brigadoon’ in the past 33 years has raised a mind-boggling $1million-plus for such groups. The biggest highland gathering in Australia, Brigadoon attracts on average 12,000 visitors for everything Scottish; from massed pipe marching bands to caber tossing, “knights in armour” engaging in mock fighting, Scottish Country and Highland dancing, strongmen lifting competitions, water-filled
balloon hurling and fresh-egg tossing and catching. Plus there’s arts and crafts stalls, a Scottish ancestry help centre and others offering more-ish Scots mutton pies, drop scones, fresh-baked Highland shortbreads, Abernethy biscuits, gingerbreads, butterscotches, and blood pudding and haggis. Proceeds from the day go back to those charity, volunteer and community groups who help put it all together and run it, including the local Rural Fire Brigade, SES, schools, sporting groups, Scouts and Guides. PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS
Paper ID still a target KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_
n the lead-up to National Identity Fraud Awareness Week (NIFAW) local people are being warned to keep their paper-based personal documentation as safe as possible, or put it through the shredder. With personal fraud affecting more than five per cent of the population annually, the campaign, supported by security company Fellowes, comes as a timely reminder. This year’s NIFAW aims to remind residents that their personal documentation needs to be safeguarded, which as spokesperson Zach Pote highlights, is easily forgotten with the growing emphasis on protecting online identity. “Paper-based identity theft is almost the forgotten element when it comes to identity fraud,’’ Mr Pote said.

“But your personal identity is as valuable as money and can be easily left exposed. All it takes is for somebody to go through your rubbish or steal personal documents from your unsecured letterbox or desk to obtain details such as your full name and address, which can then be used for criminal purposes.” The campaign is not only aimed at residents but businesses as well. “Whether you manage a florist shop or work in the health industry, your business holds confidential personal or financial information,” Mr Pote said. “If you fail to store or dispose of this information safely and it falls into the wrong hands, you risk prosecution under the Privacy Act for breaching client confidentiality and you could lose your business.” For more information and tips on how to protect you hard copy personal identification documents visit www.stopidfraud. com.au.

he Special Olympics Nepean Blue Mountains organisation has extended a friendly invitation to the entire community to get involved in their first ever trivia night. The charity’s secretary, Arthur Pooley, said that the organisation wants to see as many people as possible attend and enjoy the trivia night that will raise money to support athletes with an intellectual disability. “The Special Olympics runs at a national, state and regional level, giving people with an intellectual disability the chance to participate and become competitive in sport,” Mr Pooley said. “For those who reach the national and international levels though, competing

can be quite expensive. We help out with flights, uniforms or special equipment they might need.” The charity relies completely on donations, and so for the first time are holding a trivia night at St Marys Rugby League Club on Saturday, November 8. Tickets are just $15 per head and there’s enough room for 400 people to test their skills. Mr Pooley said that the Special Olympics will be buying some prizes but is hopeful local businesses might donate. “We need some prizes for the evening and we would be incredible grateful to receive any donations,” he said. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. For more information visit specialolympics.com.au/bluemountains.

‘Just living’ with arthritis n a bid to assist local residents living with, or at risk of developing, arthritis, Arthritis and Osteoporosis NSW is running a ‘How healthy are your joints?’ seminar next month. To be held at Penrith RSL on Wednesday, November 12, the seminar with focus on educating local people about arthritis and how to manage it. Arthritis is often referred to as a single disease. In fact, it is an umbrella term for more than 100 medical conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, specifically joints where two or more bones meet. Arthritis-related problems include pain, stiffness, inflammation and damage to joint cartilage (the tissue that covers the ends of bones, enabling them to move against each another) and surrounding structures. There will be a number of presenters at the seminar, including a rheumatologist, a physiotherapist and a dietitian. They will speak about the common

forms of arthritis and the importance of keeping active, as well as share joint protection strategies, suitable forms of exercise, tips for a healthy diet and ideas to help local seniors become more actively involved in their own health care. Head of Community Health Services for Arthritis and Osteoporosis NSW, Eloise Milthorpe, said that the seminar is a great opportunity to learn more about the condition that affects so many people. “Arthritis can affect anybody. 62 per cent of Australians who have arthritis are in the working age population and it can have a number of different impacts on people’s lives,” she said. “One of the key messages that we hope people will get out of this seminar is that arthritis doesn’t have to be something that you ‘just live with’. “There are things that can be done to help and supports are available within the Penrith community.” The seminar will be held at the Macquarie Room at Penrith RSL from 10am to 12.30pm, with registrations open from 9.30am. It will cost $15 for Arthritis and Osteoporosis NSW general members and $20 for non-members. Bookings are essential. See www.arthritisnsw.org.au.
