COVER STORY

Nostalgic, inspiring and a whole heap of fun here’s certain songs that stick with us. For whatever reason they become bound to us in a way that makes them hard to forget. They might bring up memories of our first heartbreak, our childhood or time spent with friends but whatever the connection these songs become an important part of our lives. Within a few seconds of hearing them we are transported back to a particular time and place. This is the concept behind Katie Noonan’s ‘Songs That Made Me’ project.

T

KATE REID @kate_reid6

I just thought I’d love to perform with women I admire

The album component of ‘Songs That Made Me’ features some amazing women including Renee Geyer, who takes on James Brown’s ‘It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World’; Deborah Conway who does her own rendition of ‘Court and Spark’ by Joni Mitchell; and Angie Hart who covers Cyndi Lauper’s ‘When You Were Mine’. “I kind of made a wish list of some of my favourite Australian singer songwriters and I wanted it to reflect women at various stages of their careers,” Katie said. “So we’ve got legends like Renee Geyer and Deborah Conway who really paved the way for me and my generation of musicians and then Angie (Hart) who was a huge influence on me growing up and then contemporaries of mine like Kylie Auldist from The Bamboos, Sam Buckingham and then the more up and coming singers like Sahara Beck.” Katie makes an appearance as well with the track ‘Last Goodbye’ from Jeff Buckley.

“I was in grade 12 when it came out and that was the era of – we were still kind of in the grunge era – so there was Nirvana and Silverchair and all that kind of fairly angsty angry music and then this beautiful, melodic, gorgeous voice came out of that time,” Katie said. “He was just creating music that’s so interesting and beautiful and unashamedly kind of, what’s the word, earnest, you know, unashamedly earnest and it was a man writing really sensitive, lovely, beautiful lyrics and great melodies. And it was huge of course for me because I went ‘wow pop music can be really beautiful and interesting’ and so it was a massive influence for me.” Katie Noonan’s ‘Songs That Made Me’ will be on at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Thursday, November 13. Tickets are $40-$45. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.jspac.com.au or call 4723 7600.

The aim of the project is to take some of Australia’s most talented women and give them the opportunity to present their interpretation of the songs that influenced their lives. After a successful tour in 2013, ‘Songs That Made Me’ is back for another round and this time the tour will be accompanied by the release of a compilation album. “I was involved with the ‘I Touch Myself’ campaign, which was celebrating the late great Chrissy Amphlett and working with the Cancer Council on that,” Katie said. “After that I thought ‘wouldn’t it be great to turn the ‘Songs That Made’ me project into an album with all the money going to the Pink Ribbon campaign for gynaecological and breast cancer research support’. So that’s kind of how that came into fruition.” The original idea for the project was inspired by Katie’s admiration for her fellow singer/songwriters and her experiences of life on the road. “It just came to me sometime last year I thought I’d love to create an all woman show which celebrates the wonderful diversity of talent we have here with our female singer/songwriters,” she said. “I often find myself – in my band George and in The Captains and also in my band Elixir – I’m the only girl and so I just thought I’d love to perform with women that I admire and respect. It’s just felt so nice on the road; there’s a very special energy about having all women on stage.” As part of this year’s tour Katie – along with Angie Hart, Melody Pool and Sam Buckingham – will be taking to the stage at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Thursday, November 13. When it came to a second round it was a no brainer for Katie after the success of last year’s tour. “Everyone loved it, we just had such a fun time on the road and I think people can tell that and we’re just kind of up there gas bagging and sharing stories and really it’s a very relaxed environment so people really felt like they were just hanging out in their lounge room kind of thing,” she said.

NBC have second go at ‘IT crowd’ A local version of ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’ is set to hit our screens early next year with details starting to emerge as to what we can expect from the new Channel Ten reality program. The show will air five nights a week live from South Africa with celeb casting currently underway. Former ‘Australian Idol’ judges Mark Holden and Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson are being speculated on.

It’s sure been a long time since that classic Channel Ten show ‘Good News Week’ graced our screens with the host of that particular program finally landing a new gig. Comedian Paul McDermott will front a new interview series for SBS called ‘Room 101’ next year. Based on a UK format, the 10-part series sees celebrities discussing what really gets under their skin.

In America, ‘Pawn Stars’ have been airing special throwback episodes complete with commentary from its stars of late. Let’s hope A&E pick up the episodes to air here as I think they could be quite entertaining and interesting for long time fans of the show.

It’s one of the greatest British comedies in recent times but now the Americans, as they always do, want a slice of the pie. ‘The IT Crowd’ is set to be remade by NBC for American audiences. This is the second time NBC has attempted a version of ‘The IT Crowd’.

If you haven’t had enough of sharks getting caught up in storms yet then boy do I have some good news for you! ‘Sharknado 3’, titled ‘Feast Coast’ has been announced by SyFy and will take place from Washington DC to Orlando. It will air sometime mid-next year.

With it being Halloween today, here’s a list of some of the great horror flicks airing on Foxtel tonight: ‘The Conjuring’ (Premiere Movies at 5pm), ‘The Haunted Mansion’ (Disney Movies at 5pm), ‘Halloween’ (Action Movies at 8.30pm), ‘Scary Movie 2’ (Comedy Movies at 8.30pm).

PRIMARY ETHICS TEACHERS NEEDED

To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

“

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

”

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved.

entertainment

While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices.

Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

Music KILL THE MESSENGER RATED TBC Starring: Jeremy Renner, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Michael Sheen Now screening at Hoyts Penrith THE FAULT IN OUR STARS RATED M

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Laura Dern Based on John Green’s best selling novel of the same name, ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ is a moving story that follows Hazel, played by Shailene Woodley and Gus, played by Ansel Elgort. Hazel is currently battling cancer while Gus is in remission. The two meet in a cancer support group and though at first Hazel is unsure about Gus they end up becoming friends. What develops is a love story that sees the pair support each other through some very difficult times. Laura Dern, from ‘Little Fockers’, also stars as Hazel’s mother and ‘True Blood’s Sam Trammell stars as Hazel’s father. The film has gained mostly positive reviews on movie review sites Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, with critics praising the movie for staying true to the source material. ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ is a powerful, emotion filled, and sometimes funny movie about life, love and the battles we face.

‘Kill the Messenger’ is a dramatic thriller that takes a look into the world of news and the consequences that can come from reporting the truth. The story is based on actual events and follows Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Gary Webb, played by Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner, as he discovers the secrets behind the cocaine epidemic in America. Through his investigation Webb ends up alleging that the CIA knew about the dealers who were responsible for bringing drugs into the country, a trade which funded rebels who were fighting in Nicaragua. As he explores the story further Webb is warned to stop by both CIA operatives and drug kingpins who don’t want the investigation to go any further. Webb puts his career and his life on the line to expose the truth behind the conspiracy. The film forces you to question where we should draw the line when it comes to news reporting. The story is based on the novel of the same name by Nick Schou along with Webb’s own account in ‘Dark Alliance’.

TAYLOR SWIFT 1989 Out Now Grammy Award winning artist Taylor Swift is back with her new album ‘1989’, named after the year of the singer/songwriter’s birth. For her fifth release Swift set out to make a record which is pure pop, taking her a little further from the country music that defined her start in the music industry at the age of just 14. The first single from the album is ‘Shake It Off!’ which debuted in the top spot on the U.S Billboard Hot 100. The track opens with a strong beat and very much fits in with Swift’s aim to make catchy pop tunes rather than her previous country-pop blend. It’s a fun, infectious uptempo song that sees Swift addressing her haters, advising them that she doesn’t really care what they have to say, instead she’s just going to ‘shake it off’. While not quite as immediately catchy as ‘Shake It Off!’, second single ‘Out of the Woods’ is a solid electro pop track that addresses the in-between stage of a new relationship. Swift collaborated on the track with Jack Antonoff, lead guitarist for indie rockers Fun. It’s a pretty safe bet that this will be another high selling album for Swift. Her fans are passionate and plentiful and the tracks released so far are very radio friendly.

After 2012’s ‘The Walking Dead: Season One’ won Game of the Year the franchise is back with a follow up that sees players once again take on the role of Clementine, a young orphaned girl who must battle her way through the undead apocalypse. Months after the events of Season One Clementine is looking for safety from the walking dead and is finding it hard to know who to trust from the living. As you make your

way through the game every decision made will change the story and affect the outcome. ‘The Walking Dead: Season One’ is based on the award-winning comic books by Robert Kirkman. Whether you’re a fan of the hit TV show, the original comic series, or zombie stories in general there’s no doubt that ‘The Walking Dead: Season One’ has plenty of action and suspense to keep gamers happy.

St Clair local gets down and dirty in new show ancer James Maxfield has a pretty impressive resume. The talented performer who grew up in St Clair has worked on some of Australia’s biggest and most well loved productions. Think ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, ‘Grease’, ‘The Boy From Oz’ and ‘Wicked’. Come November James will be adding to this long list with a role in the hit musical ‘Dirty Dancing’. Being offered the role of Moe Pressman – husband of Vivian, the randy cougar who sets her sights on Johnny – was a pleasant surprise for James. “When I got the offer that they wanted me for Moe I was ecstatic, I was beside myself, it was great,” he said. “I thought I was only being seen for understudy roles but just to be offered the actual part was pretty cool.” Like many people James is a fan of the movie turned musical which follows the love story of Baby and Johnny while she is holidaying. “I grew up watching movies like ‘Dirty Dancing’ and it’s such a classic and it’s my childhood and because I grew up dancing as a child it’s that one show that I always wanted to do,” he said. ‘Dirty Dancing’ will be on at Sydney Lyric Theatre from November 28. ydney lawyer and weekend winemaker, Paul de Mestre likes to sum up the fruit of his hobby as “the best wine from the smallest vineyard you’ve never heard of”. And while we think he’s pretty much right, don’t go rushing out trying to find a bottle. He makes just 800 a year, and these can be bought only from his little 16ha vineyard on Sofala Road at Ilford in the Mudgee Region of the NSW Central Ranges, or online. And even then that’s if he’s got any… While not officially organic, Paul takes a minimalist approach to his winemaking, trusting nature, as he says, at every turn. The result is delightful cool climate varietals that can vary considerably from vintage to vintage, but which always deliver big on texture and flavour, be they his Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon or Viognier. His currently available 2012 de Mestre Wines Shiraz at $30 is a corker, coming from a perfect vintage – and by adding a touch of Viognier he’s achieved a wine that’s nicely fragrant and has forward flavours of plum and black pepper. Go to www.demestre.com.au to organise a bottle or six, or to arrange a vineyard visit. One to note: New Zealand’s Matua has come up with an interesting concept with the release of three labels that give buyers some extra help in choosing off the shelf their preferred style of Sauvignon Blanc. Their label Matua Smooth is “soft and elegant”; a Matua Crisp is “fresh and tropical”; and a Marlborough Matua Lighter is “cool and fragrant”. Each of these 2014 vintage wines is priced at $22 through BWS.

Last minute ideas for a super scary costume KATHERINE TWEED

life & style

It is as simple as cutting it to size and tying it around your neck but if you don’t have a huge store of fabric at home and you can’t get to Spotlight, grab a black maxi dress and slip your head through an arm hole – easy! To complete the cape outfit, cover your face in talcum powder and say hello to dracula. Tip #3: zombify your normal clothes. If you haven’t seen the TV show ‘The Walking Dead’ do yourself a favour and look up some stills online. Turning yourself into a zombie is so easy that all you have to do is drag some old clothes through some mud and get inventive with your, or your sister’s eyeshadow. Create some dark shadows under your eyes, make your face look extra pale and the most important part, cover your mouth and chest area with fake blood, which you can make easily from food colouring, golden syrup, water and cornflower. Tip #4: mummify yourself. One thing you will always have at home is a roll of toilet paper so this costume is one that everyone can do. Grab some toilet paper (or even some old bandages if you have them) and wrap yourself up – easy!

katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

Use an old dress up costume by making it torn and gory with fake blood

Today is Halloween, the perfect excuse to go all out and dress up in a costume that at any other time of the year would be totally unacceptable. Despite the fact that Halloween is not a holiday celebrated in Australia, there is no doubt that there will be countless scarythemed parties happening tonight and over the weekend. If you are reading this now and have just thought ‘oh no, I haven’t planned my Halloween costume yet’ or ‘I would like to go to a Halloween party but I don’t have anything to wear’, then you are in luck because I have some of the best last-minute Halloween costume ideas up my sleeve. Thankfully there are costumes out there that don’t require weeks of planning in advance or long and tedious waits for internet purchases to arrive – in fact Halloween costumes can be some of the easiest costumes to devise. But before I share my secret costume ideas, I need to lay down the one, most important ground rule. Your Halloween costume needs to be scary. I don’t care how many times someone tells you that you would make the best Mary Poppins or Where’s Wally, unless you are the dead or zombified version of those people, you’re hardly playing the part. Tip #1: Convert an old costume. If you dressed up as Snow White to your last fancy-dress party and don’t need the costume again, consider making it look scary. Grab a pair of scissors and slash at the costume (making sure the cuts aren’t in any awkward places, unless you are planning on wearing something underneath) to create a number of cuts. Pull out some threads to help the fraying along. Then, grab some red food colouring, mixing it with water if you like, and splash it over the costume. Ta-da, you now look like you are a Snow White who has had a fight with a crazy knife-wielding dwarf... I am sure you can come up with your own scenarios. Tip #2: Make a cape. Making a cape is ridiculously easy if you have a length of black fabric laying around the home.

Which diamond shape best suits you? Have you ever wondered what all of the different diamond shapes say about their owners? Or why you are drawn to one shape over another, which often has nothing to do with popularity or fashion? Here’s my take on what your diamond shape says about you. There are lots of shapes available but I have picked my top five. Round is a very classic shape. It’s also considered to be the most brilliant of all diamonds as a round brilliant cut allows for even dispersion of light. It can also hide inclusions very well! If you have always dreamed of a round diamond you are a traditional romantic at heart. The second most popular diamond shape would have to be an even tie between a princess and cushion cut. Princess is a true square shaped diamond with straight sides and precisely pointed corners. It’s considered to be quite a modern looking shape and if this is your choice you are more than likely fashion forward and will be a modern bride. The cushion cut has softer corners and slightly curved sides. It also offers more choice within the shape itself as you can find stunning cushion cuts with a rectangular shape or edging more towards square. Ladies with a slight vintage flair generally wear cushions. Also those of you looking for the sparkle of a round with a square look, but wish to avoid the ‘sharpness’ of a princess cut will tend to like these best. If you are more drawn to the elegant emerald cut (or asscher cut) then I would say you love clean lines and a more subtle kind of sparkle. Emerald and asscher cuts are part of the ‘step cut’ family and exhibit crisp flashes of light rather than lots of small scintillation or sparkle. My favourite diamond shape has to be the pear shape. My wife wears a pear and I love the timeless shape of this stone. The perfect pear shape diamond can be tricky to source though as they are a bit of a mix between the oval and marquise shape and can exhibit a ‘bowtie’ if they are not proportioned well. Pear diamond lovers are generally traditional and romantic but are unique at the same time.

HOROSCOPES

20

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Professional Aries, strive to anticipate [and solve] workplace problems before they actually happen. For non-working Rams think of creative ways you can contribute your numerous talents to the world around you. When it comes to giving financial assistance to family or friends, aim to balance being generous and being realistic.

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

The Full Moon (in tenacious Taurus) encourages permanence in partnerships, but that doesn’t mean you have to get stuck in a boring rut. Single Bulls – look for love with someone who is wise and mature. And be emotionally honest with yourself. Feeling guilty about something you did in the past won’t help the current situation.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Use the power of your imagination plus some strategic research to get to the bottom of a problem that’s had you stumped for a while. Plus listen to your inner voice, it will point you in the right direction. Mercury moves into your wellbeing zone on the weekend (where it stays until November 28) so take the time to educate yourself about healthy eating, exercise and lifestyle choices. Knowledge is power.

How’s your budget and bank balance going? The Full Moon highlights hiccups in your financial management. Aim to be less extravagant, and much more cautious with cash and credit (and more financially literate). Librans love to dress up and are the fabulous fashionistas of the zodiac, but don’t just focus on your outer appearance.

Star predictions for the week beginning Nov 2

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Expect a satisfying week, as the Sun/Pluto sextile provides plenty of opportunities to sharpen your communication skills. Plus, you’re at your charming Scorpio best. So don’t hesitate to call in a few old favours … in the nicest possible way. As Albert Camus wrote “Charm is the way of getting the answer yes, without having asked.”

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

On Wednesday, ricochet out of your comfort zone and tackle an adventurous project. Then the Full Moon lights up your work zone, so you’re keen to be in charge. But are you being the boss or just plain bossy? Utilise your leadership skills in clever and creative ways. If you’re feeling over-stressed and under-appreciated, then organise some time out for yourself. Solitude is soul food for you.

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Crabs are often teary on a Full Moon but this one’s in earthy Taurus, so you’ll feel more emotionally grounded than usual. Work matters and group activities are favoured, as Uranus and the full moon boost your creativity and networking skills. Avoid blowing things out of proportion though and strive to maintain your sense of perspective.

The Full Moon favours socialising, entertaining, networking and communication as you mix and mingle with a wide range of people. Singles; love and the internet are linked, so join a few online dating sites ASAP! But be careful how you communicate with loved ones on the weekend. Confidence could be misinterpreted as cockiness.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

With Jupiter jumping through your sign it’s time to enjoy yourself, and make the most of your extensive talents. Home is where the heart is as you use your Lion’s den as the creative canvas on which you can express yourself via cooking, crafting, painting, gardening, renovating or interior design.

With so many planets visiting your career zone, find ways you can be more creative, cooperative and conscientious on the job. It’s also time to spruce up your work space or home office. The Full Moon could also herald a house move, home renovations, guests arriving or domestic dramas.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

This week you’re more experimental than usual, as the Full Moon activates your adventure zone. But you may encounter problems with a stressed relative or a neurotic neighbour, as they misunderstand where you are coming from. Fortunately, Mercury shifts into your communication zone on the weekend making things easier.

Are your aspirations ambitious enough? There’s no room for false modesty or passive procrastination this week. The Full Moon stimulates your sense of adventure, as you transform an abstract idea into a practical project. It’s also the perfect time to talk and text; plus be proactive in partnerships and gung-ho in group situations.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Have you updated your insurance? If you’re like most people, then the answer is probably no. This means that you may not be sure what your home or business is actually covered for, so make sure you check the details. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has estimated that between 27 and 81 per cent of Australian homes are underinsured by 10 per cent or more compared to the current rebuilding costs. According to ASIC the underinsurance problem in Australia can be due to a number of factors, including: • The burden of estimating rebuilding costs rests with the consumer, who generally does not have reliable or comprehensive enough tools to make a correct estimate • The scale of a disaster can contribute to the extent to which a consumer is underinsured; there is a risk there will be a jump in building costs • Sums insured may not increase over time, or not increase at a rate that is in line with building costs generally • Consumers may make a choice to accept a degree of underinsurance to achieve a certain premium value • For contents cover, sums insured often don’t recognise new purchases made by a household. So what can you do to limit your risk of falling into the ‘underinsured’ category? Review your insurance cover and think about those points above when you do. Ask yourself the tough questions. Are you covered for fire, flood damage or for loss of business income resulting from these events? Is your cover for current market value to rebuild and furnish your home or business? Be aware of the process if you need to make a claim; and use a camera to document the condition of your business stock and your personal belongings. This will help you make a claim in the event of a loss (and mark an annual date in your calendar to update these records). Use a safe-deposit box or a safe to store your insurance policies and photographic documentation and make sure to back up all business computer files. If a storm or natural disaster strikes, thoroughly check your home, business and belongings for any evidence of damage, which often can go unnoticed.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

MATT STRATFORD Do something today that your future self will like

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? The biggest benefit is having the extra energy it provides. It helps with keeping a positive mood and the overall good feeling and confidence it gives you is amazing. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I enjoy running, bushwalking and doing weights at the gym.

Top three tips for good health? 1. Really treat your body like a temple. Good quality exercise and good quality, real food does amazing things for your body and mind. 2. Take time to relax and unwind so that you are not too stressed. 3. Drink water!

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? Everyone loses motivation at some point, the trick is not to just give up altogether. Try to stay focused on your goal. My goal is to keep getting my back to 110 per cent. Everything I do today makes me better for tomorrow and is all experience and knowledge I can use to help other people.

A daily ‘must do’? A daily must do would definitely would be exercise, be it in small bouts of it throughout the day or a big session. It’s surprisingly easy to fit little bits into your day.

issue. A lot of people don’t realise it’s not a matter of just cutting out these things, it is choosing the right types of carbs and fats. Our bodies need them and rely on them and won’t survive without them.

How does fitness feature in your life? I have always had an interest and passion in fitness and after a bad back injury while truck driving/labouring I decided it was time to redirect my career and do something I enjoyed. I am currently half way through completing my certificate four in fitness. Through learning of the importance of core strength (no not your six pack) and with treatment I have recovered from my injury. I wish pass on my skills and knowledge to help other people recover from injuries and also reach their fitness goals whatever they may be.

When it comes to health there really is a lot in the old saying ‘go with your gut’. It’s becoming more and more apparent about how important your gut bacteria is for your overall health and wellbeing. Plus gut microbiota may hold the key to unlocking most so-called Western lifestyle diseases. “When you look at almost any condition that exists now that didn’t exist or was much less common 40 or 50 years ago, there is a good chance that it is relating to the actions of the gut microbiota,” says Professor Charles Mackay from Sydney University, a medical researcher with 35 years’ experience in the field. “I would include in that list food allergies, asthma, type one and type two diabetes, obesity and possibly autism and a few other things.” He said some cancers, including colon cancer, may also be impacted by people’s intestinal flora, and conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. It’s interesting to hear how they influence the whole of our health. “There are trillions of bacteria in our gut; they serve a function in our gut to digest fibre and do a whole lot of other things. They also produce by products and metabolites, and these metabolites can enter the blood and go all over the body,” Professor Mackay said. A bacteria that might infect your gut could be producing some molecule, maybe a common one, or a less common one, that has some fundamental role to any cell of your body. The molecule can travel around the body and attach to a cell, adversely affect its function, and this is how a host of diseases can occur. Do you have trouble losing weight? Some bacteria like sugars and others like fats. And these little guys can influence what you feel like eating. So when you really crave that donut and frappacino, it’s not in your head, it could be in your gut! Professor Mackay said the course of study on microbiota could have a bigger impact on human health than any other medical breakthrough for 30 or 40 years: “This is a revolution in human medicine causing an explosion in interest”.

Christmas scraps belong in the rubbish

Experience nourishment for all eternity

As we come into the holiday season, we all love to have parties filled with yummy food! One of the most common conditions we see in dogs is a disease called pancreatitis. This often occurs in dogs after a high fat meal such as sausages, bacon or ham – all Christmas favourites! What is the pancreas and what’s pancreatitis? The pancreas is a small organ located behind the stomach. It has two main functions – the first is to produce insulin which regulates blood sugar. The other function is the production of digestive enzymes that helps the body break down and utilise food. Pancreatitis occurs when this organ becomes inflamed. There are several causes of pancreatitis such as medications and metabolic problems. However, one of the most common reasons for pancreatitis is due to a high fat meal, even a tiny piece of ham or sausage. What are the signs of pancreatitis and how is it diagnosed? Symptoms vary depending on severity but include a painful abdomen, depression, vomiting, fever and diarrhoea. In very severe cases, dogs may become collapsed and develop life threatening infections. Pancreatitis is usually suspected based on history and presentation. A definitive diagnosis is usually made with a combination of bloodwork and abdominal imaging (x-rays or ultrasound). It is important that other problems such as intestinal obstructions are ruled out as these can cause similar symptoms. How do we treat it? Treatment for pancreatitis is supportive and the aim is to correct dehydration, provide pain relief, control vomiting and prevent infection. Affected animals generally need to be placed on intravenous fluids for several days and given anti-nausea medications, pain relief and antibiotics. Treating pancreatitis can sometimes be expensive as treatment can be prolonged so it is always great to consider pet insurance from a young age. The prognosis for the majority of dogs with pancreatitis is good as long as they stop eating fatty foods! Fortunately, the majority of pancreatitis cases can be avoided if you feed your pet a lean diet and avoid fatty products such as ham, pork and chicken skin!

Whenever you turn on the TV, it seems there are shows about food. We have cooking competitions. We have chefs showing their latest time or money saving recipes. You could easily think food has become an obsession. What irony that there are other shows encouraging people to lose weight! But perhaps nothing has changed. In the Bible’s book of John, we read how Jesus had just performed the extraordinary miracle of feeding 5000 people with only “five small barley loaves and two small fish”. Not surprisingly, the crowd, very impressed, chased after Jesus looking for another free feed. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “[don’t chase after me] for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.” What does he mean? Simply, physical food; bread, fish, that which we love to eat, while it might sustain us for a short time, ultimately will go off. More importantly, Jesus is saying our physical food has no ability to carry us on into eternity. Jesus then stunned the crowd with these amazing words, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and who believes in me will never be thirsty.” Whether starving or well fed, Christian people have known and experienced this great truth for centuries; real, sustaining life is only ever found in Jesus and never in the things of this world. Sustaining, satisfying, eternal life is only ever found in taking to heart and trusting Jesus’ words, allowing Him to transform your whole being. It is great to enjoy good meals or new recipes, but how much better, to know and enjoy Jesus, who will take you into eternity.

Pets are increasingly being treated to pampering in top-flight hotels, including anything from being served caviar for dinner, to physiotherapy, massages, facials, mud baths and nutrition consultations. One European hotel already has part of its five star restaurant set aside for guests to dine there with their pets, while another offers a ‘play meadow’ with an expert dog trainer, canine physiotherapy options, massages, lymphatic drainage, laser treatment, and nutrition and detox programs. In a recent survey of over 8,000 guests world-wide, Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLHW) was surprised to find

hree hearing loss prevention research programs are to benefit from a $3.6 million Federal Government funding boost. The funding boost, part of a $539.8 million investment in health and medical research, was announced last week. “One in six Australians is affected by hearing loss, with that figure estimated to worsen to one in every four Australians by 2050,” said Assistant Minister for Health, Fiona Nash. “Hearing loss has a significant impact on an individual’s capacity to communicate and participate in social situations and can affect a person’s education and

employment opportunities.” “These three research projects are exciting, innovative and hold real potential to improve the lives of thousands of Australians,” she said. While the three research programs selected are directed toward children, they may also lead to further research to help prevent hearing loss from ear infections in seniors, who are more susceptible to ear infections than younger adults. Less than one per cent of people under the age of 15 are affected by hearing loss however three in every four people over the age of 70 are affected by the condition. - Katherine Tweed

some guests in China wanted their dogs to be offered Iberian pata negra ham or caviar for dinner, while in the USA a guest requested daily blueberry facials for their pooch, and another asked if their cat could be taken to the local zoo by a staff member – for a bird-watching session. And in the UK one guest suggested pets be given personal butlers, while in Australia a couple here came up with what we think is the most bizarre of requests: when they had to spend time away from the hotel, they wanted an SLHW staff member “to spend the day with our Burmese cat telling her how beautiful she is.”

fter months of making do, working out of temporary workshops, Penrith Community Mens’ Shed has finally moved into its permanent home. The group made the move on Wednesday, October 22, and members are looking forward to being able to meet weekly on Wednesdays and every first and third Saturday of the month out of their location on the grounds of Penrith Baptist Church in the new Caddens Estate. “It is great that we are able to finally

move in to our new shed. We have been working out of people’s houses since the fourth of June and we have not been able to do as much work as we would like,” said Penrith Community Mens’ Shed chairman, Merv Adlington. “Now we can start doing the stuff that we really want to do and because the blokes are getting along so well, it is great that we are going to be able to meet every week. It is going to be good to be able to get in there and start making some sawdust.” The group will be holding their first Saturday Shed Day from 10am on November 1 and will be holding an open day on Saturday, November 29. Christmas is just around the corner and Rick’s is ready! Traditional decorations are the fashion this year at Rutherford’s Country KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

P

reparations for the Christmas season this year began in January at Rick Rutherford’s Country, as their annual Christmas Collection is so highly anticipated. This Saturday, November 1, is the official launch of the Christmas Collection, where over 250 guests will have the first look at the unique treasures and decorations that fill the business’ Lawson location. From Sunday, November 2, the displays are open to everyone, seven days a week right up until Christmas Eve. “Over the years we have gained a wonderful reputation for offering one of the most unique Christmas ranges anywhere. Each of the 10 rooms of our Lawson heritage gallery is decked to the nines, as the entire building is transformed into a veritable Christmas wonderland,” said owner, Rick Rutherford.

Rick Rutherford’s Country has been preparing all year for Christmas “This year the overriding theme of the 2014 Collections is ‘Merry and Bright’, with a distinct leaning towards the traditional styles of Christmas decorating.” 45 Christmas trees are decorated

throughout the building, each one decorated to suit its own individual theme. Many of the festive goods on display at Rick Rutherford’s Country are unique to the store, having been imported from

across the world and from the far reaches of the country. Rick Rutherford’s Country is located at 3 Badgery Crescent and is open daily from 10am. Call 4759 3434 for more info.
