COVER STORY
How the digital age made Icehouse cool again conic rock band Icehouse are responsible for some quintessentially Australian tracks including ‘Great Southern Land’, which just last week – along with Cold Chisel’s ‘Khe Sanh’, The Go-Betweens’ ‘Cattle and Cane’ and The Divinyls’ ‘Boys in Town’ – was added to the National Film and Sound Archive’s (NFSA) Sounds of Australia registry, which recognises sound recordings that have cultural, historical and aesthetic significance.

large proportion of them were probably not even born when I’d written that song,” Iva said. The perfect example of this support from younger generations came during Icehouse’s appearance at Homebake in 2011 when the promoter asked them to feature their first album to the crowd whose average age was 20. “I said to him ‘but this audience won’t have been born when these songs came out, this is going to be a disaster’,” Iva recalled. “And we got about two songs into the set and my bass player came over to me and he said ‘have a look at how many 18-yearolds are singing every lyric’ and it’s true, they sang from beginning to end and it was quite extraordinary.” To celebrate the Platinum sales status, Icehouse will be hitting the road for the Platinum Concert Series, which includes a
stop off at Penrith Panthers’ Evan Theatre on Wednesday, January 21. The aim is to include tracks from their back catalogue with the band getting together in December to workshop ideas for the set list and see what tracks might work among a list of songs that fans may not have experienced live. “[We’re] hoping to reintroduce things which are perhaps not necessarily in the kind of short list of top 30 hits or so because some things work incredibly well live that perhaps didn’t necessarily translate that well as recordings and vice versa, so the only way to really find out is to try them,” Iva explained. Icehouse will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Wednesday, January 21. Tickets are $58.50. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555. “I’m well aware of the list and, of course, I’m absolutely chuffed. That particular song was sort of a mystery from the very beginning and it never ceases to amaze me even to this day... it’s some 33 years or something silly ago that I wrote it,” Icehouse frontman Iva Davies laughed. It’s a track that brilliantly encompasses the sound of Australia without resorting to the usual well-worn clichés. This was something that Iva was aiming for when he sat down to write the track during a time when the country was full of national symbolism. “I think there was a bid going on for the Commonwealth Games or something of national significance that was attracting a lot of clichéd jingoism, and so there were a whole lot of things kind of conspiring to drive me to go no, no, no, no, no, I don’t want to hear about koala bears and vegemite anymore,” Iva laughed. “I want to do something that has the soul of the place woven into it.” With the help of a new synth that he’d brought back from America, Iva sat down and wrote ‘Great Southern Land’ – the first track written for the band’s 1982 album ‘Primitive Man’. “Having been struck by that horizon when I was flying across Australia and also the horizon line of the sea and so on, these seemed to be very straight lines to me,” he said. “That was possibly the one picture that I wanted to convey and the way that I conveyed it was right at the beginning of the song by simply holding one long note.” Along with being recognised on NFSA’s Sounds of Australia registry, Icehouse also received Platinum sales status for their compilation album ‘White Heat: 30 Hits’. It’s not surprising that with a changing digital music landscape – where it’s easy to get your hands on songs from previous generations – the band are continuing to attract new fans. “This has enabled a whole new audience to come to music which has been around for a long time and that’s the only way I can really explain why it is that we look out now when we’re playing to 15,000 people and recognise that an incredibly

Records and CDs may be on the way out, but the digital music age has certainly done one thing – it’s introduced classic Australian bands like Icehouse to an entirely new generation of fans. We caught up with Iva Davies to discuss the band’s resurgence...

n celebration of the Christmas season upon us, the Riverside Theatres in Parramatta will be putting on their Festive Favourites family Christmas concert next Sunday afternoon, December 7. The show will combine traditional carols such as ‘Away In A Manger’ with more contemporary tracks like ‘All I Want For Christmas’. Performing all the Christmas hits will be a 30-piece band made up of members of the City of Holyroyd Brass Band along with a group of talented singers including Blaxland resident, David Tucker. “I love Christmas, so any time I get an opportunity to sing Christmas songs, I’m just in my element,” David said. David recently starred as Lumiere in Packenim Productions’ ‘Beauty and the Beast’. He will be joined on stage by fellow cast members Kelsi Boyden and Danny Folpp along with Stella Barahone, who played the lead role in ‘Annie’ and Jessica Rookeward, who starred as Tracy Turnblad in ‘Hairspray’. “It’s a great bunch of people that I get to share the stage with,” David said. “I’m just thrilled to spend some more time with them as well and be privileged to sing with them.” The talented musicians will also be joined on stage by a special guest star, the jolly man himself, Santa Claus.

SHOWCASE AT PENRITH RSL Standing tall in an elaborately designed exhibition booth, Thomas Smith looks confident as he explains to people the life changing adventure that he has been on for the past 22 weeks. Thomas was at Penrith RSL for the Max Potential Show Case, an initiative that creates a coaching partnership between local community leaders and year 11 students in the Penrith area. Thomas began this journey feeling like a fish out of water. At an introductory group session he struggled to make eye contact with his peers and coaches from the community. After 22 weeks Thomas has not only achieved his personal goal of developing stronger relationships with key people in his life, but has initiated a community service project with the organisation Paying it Forward Incorporated. He has committed to continuing to volunteer in a program that meet the needs of the homeless in our community.
“I’ve learnt what it means to go out and make things happen, to tackle challenges head on,” says Thomas of Jamison High School.
“I’m passionate about leaving a legacy in younger generations,” say Frank, who runs his own Chiropractic Clinic in Penrith. “What I didn’t expect was the benefit I would gain from learning to be a better coach. The skills of listening and reflection help me serve my patients better and I have become a more effective leader in my volunteering roles. The fact I had the privilege of seeing Thomas develop in confidence and personal leadership is the icing on the cake.”
“Rather than letting fear paralyse me, I have learnt to plan out my next steps and reflect on the journey so far. I’ve discovered there is always a way forward.” However, it wasn’t from textbooks and articles that Thomas learnt these lessons and principles, it was through coaching. Coaches take the experiences that life gives and helps a person interpret them and develop through them. They highlight the underlying principles in action.

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION RATED M
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer
It’s the film mash up that fans have been waiting for. Cult classic TV show ‘Fat Pizza’ and the Logie award-winning comedy ‘Housos’ have come together for the aptly titled ‘Fat Pizza vs Housos’. Chef and owner of Fat Pizza, Bobo Gigliotti, played by John Boxer, has been released from prison and is looking for a new spot for his business but unfortunately it’s been 15 years and rents have skyrocketed. The only place he can afford to set up shop is in the notorious Sunnyvale, a housing commission suburb. This sets the scene for plenty of comedy madness between the characters from each show. The cast features a collection of favourites from ‘Fat Pizza’ and ‘Housos’ including Pauly played by Paul Fenech, Shazza played by Elle Dawe and Habib, played by Tahir Bilgic. Fans will get to see the return of ‘Sleek the Elite’ and ‘Fat Pizza vs Housos’ also features cameos by a host of stars including rocker Angry Anderson, Kyle Sandilands and Nick Giannopoulos from ‘The Wog Boy’.

Southern California metal band P.O.D have released a new album which gives fans a slightly different take on some of their biggest hits. The album titled ‘SoCal Sessions’ is an acoustic release that features the band’s most well-known tracks including new hits and older releases like ‘Youth of the Nation’ and ‘Alive’. If you loved ‘Alive’ in its original format – and millions of album sales suggest many people did – then you’ll want to hear the acoustic reworking. It’s just as full and powerful as the original but features the beauty that only a collection of acoustic guitars can bring. The rawness and driving beat mean that fans of a heavier sound will still find much to love; this is definitely not a watered down version by any stretch of the imagination. ‘SoCal Sessions’ also includes reworkings of more recent tracks including ‘Panic and Run’ and ‘Beautiful’ from the band’s most recent album 2012’s ‘Murdered Love’. Acoustic albums can be tricky. There’s always the chance that fans won’t take too well to hearing their favourite tracks in a new light. But from the songs released so far it’s hard to see many faults with the stripped back, yet still heavy vibe that P.O.D have created.
‘Super Smash Bros’ has become a fan favourite, which isn’t surprising when you consider it features all of those very loveable Nintendo characters including Mario, Pikachu and Link. You can play alone or with up to three friends and you don’t have to be in the same room with the option of online gameplay. ‘Super Smash Bros’ features all the classic characters along with some new faces like Little Mac, Mega Man and Palutena. There’s also the
option of playing as your own Mii character. Players can battle it out using a range of different control methods and the game is also amiibo compatible. This is the first game in the series that will be presented in HD, making ‘Super Smash Bros’ even more visually appealing. If you remember the classic from the Nintendo 64 days then you’ll no doubt be blown away by this updated version.

The next instalment in the ‘Transformers’ series sees a new human cast taking over after 2011’s ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’. Mark Wahlberg features in the lead role of Cade Yeager, a mechanic who – along with his daughter Tessa played by Nicola Peltz – teams up with Optimus Prime and the Autobots to wage war against evil. The film is set five years after ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ where an epic battle left the city torn apart. Along with Wahlberg, the cast also includes Stanley Tucci as Joshua Joyce, the head of Kinetic Solutions Incorporated and Kelsey Grammer, who plays Harold Attinger, the head agent of a CIA black ops unit. ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ is directed by Michael Bay, who was also responsible for the previous three films.

WINE Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith
Going back to the future DAVID ELLIS
any years ago before wines were identified on labels by their grape varieties, they were named after their place of origin – quite often down to the actual block within a vineyard. In a somewhat back to the future move, the Hunter Valley’s Andrew Margan has released a white and a red emulating this old practice, labelling them Field Blend White – Block 8 and Field Blend Red – Block 11. The white comprises predominantly Semillon and smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio from a vineyard planted with these mixed varieties 40 years ago, all the fruit from the 2014 vineyard being picked and vinified together in a single batch. The red is predominantly Shiraz with some Mataro and Tempranillo, and underwent the same process. We loved the white that’s wonderfully fruity with forward citrus and tropical characters and crispy dry on the palate. It’s also nicely soft, and a great drop at $15 to enjoy at this time of year with a whole host of summery seafood ideas. One to note: If you’re looking for a stand-out drop as a gift for a wine-loving family member or friend this Christmas, can we suggest Rosemount Estate’s 2012 Balmoral Syrah – then watch their reaction when you tell them not to open it until at least 2020 or if they’re really patient, not for another 15 years beyond this. Made from tiny quantities of exceptional fruit off a range of Rosemount’s best McLaren Vale vineyards, this is a ripper drop already but will only get better and better over those years in the cellar. This beauty will set you back $75 but it’s well worth the investment.

veryone’s favourite rude, crude family is back with the release of ‘Family Guy’ Season 14 on DVD on December 10. This season was packed full of strange and hilarious plotlines including Peter’s discovery of a twin growing from his neck, the rebirth of Stewie into a wealthy British family and the formation of singing/songwriting duo Peter and neighbour Quagmire. Of course fans of the show will already know about the other shocking event that happened in Season 14, the death of a much loved member of the Griffin family. The original voice cast was joined this season by special guests including Adam Levine, Tony Sirico, Bryan Cranston and the late Lauren Bacall. The DVD features all 21 uncensored episodes and plenty of special features including commentary by writers, producers, directors and cast members; deleted scenes plus plenty of fun with a Consuela mash-up. West Life has three ‘Family Guy’ Season 14 DVDs to give away. For your chance to win, email the code word ‘FAMILY’ to competitions@westernweekender.com. au with your name and contact details. Bikini tips for the hot summer ahead KATHERINE TWEED
life & style
that has only just hit our shores. Yes, I am talking about Brazillian coverage swimwear, which is generally pretty skimpy and generally fits somewhere between a g-string and full coverage bottoms. If you want to be right on trend this season, try it. • Non-traditional styles: Stray away from the traditional triangle bikini top and string tie bottoms this season and go for something adventurous. I really love the crop-style top – Cantik’s ‘Nevada’ bikini is the perfect example – because it offers a little more coverage and is different while not being too dramatic. • Tops you can wear more than one way: Turning a traditional halterstyle triangle top into a bra-style top is simple and is an easy way to re-vamp an old bikini. I also like to keep an eye out for tops and bottoms that are reversible. • Backless one-pieces: Cutaway one pieces are not as popular as they have moved over to make way for the reign of the backless. Get yourself one for no other reason than they are simply hot!

Boho prints are the perfect style when it comes to beach-hair this summer season
I am a self-confessed swimwear addict and if there was some kind of anonymous meeting for bikini-obsessed people, I would be obliged to sign myself up. I literally own enough bikini tops and bottoms that I would be able to get myself through every weekend (Saturdays and Sundays) this summer without having to re-wear the same combination again. In fact, I could probably make it through next summer as well. The last bikini that I bought myself was a little red number by Cantik, one of my favourite swimwear brands, and I purchased it just last week – although, after making the purchase I bullied my partner into agreeing to gift it to me for Christmas. The pair I bought before that was actually two different tops that I bought in the first week of November. My favourite Instagram account is ‘A Bikini A Day’ and I can’t scroll past more than two pictures on my feed without seeing a post of someone in a bikini or a post by a swimwear designer. Get the picture? My point is that I know enough about swimwear to know what is hot and what is in this season, so here are my tips on what to look for. • Anything nautical: Blues, reds and whites are the hottest colours in swimwear this season and you only have to look at Cantik’s newest collection (pictured) to figure it out. Something with stripes is a must-have for anyone with a bikini collection and is keen to keep up with the nautical theme. • Boho prints: If there is ever a style that goes perfectly with beach-hair it is boho and this season we are lucky enough to see the trend taking the lead. Tigerlily Swimwear stocks some of the best boho swimwear around and a lot of the mainstream Australian surf brands are taking on the look this season as well. A great way to boho-up your look without trying too hard is to add a coverup. I am especially keen on kimonos this season. • Brazillian cut: This look is not for everyone and is something

HOROSCOPES
16
ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Have you been feeling restricted? This week the winds of change sweep through your horoscope as Uranian energy gets things moving in a positive new direction. Your motto for the moment is from birthday great Bette Midler [born on December 1, 1945]: “Things are constantly changing. Life is nothing but change”.
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Is your financial situation less than fabulous? Money matters get a welcome boost this week as Jupiter sends a lucky opportunity your way, and then the Full Moon consolidates it. There’s one catch though … Bulls can be very self-indulgent so avoid going on a spontaneous spending spree.
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
JOANNE MADELINE MOORE
Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro. tumblr.com www.twitter.com/ JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2014.
Physical and mental energy is high, culminating in Saturday’s full moonbeams firing up your sign. The more you combine your creative talents [via partnerships and joint ventures] the more stimulating the week will be. Attached Twins – reboot a long-term relationship with a romantic rendezvous. Single Geminis – don’t sit around waiting for your soul mate to magically appear. Be proactive.
It’s time to expand your world via travel, study, new friendships and international contacts. You’re keen to link up with like-minded people [especially via social media] and, for some lucky singles, love is waiting online. There’s unpredictable Full Moon energy about on the weekend, so drop the perfectly planned schedule.
Star predictions for the week beginning Nov 30
CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
The Venus/Jupiter trine sends fabulous financial, professional or relationship opportunities your way. It’s time to boost your Scorpio self-esteem so you have the confidence to capitalise on these lucky breaks. The Full Moon focuses on the resources that you share with others.
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
This week’s stars illuminate your inner teacher/mentor/coach. So don’t underestimate [and undervalue] your ability to encourage others to achieve their personal best. Your motto for the moment is from fellow Sagittarian [and birthday great] Walt Disney “I think of myself as a little bee. I go from one area of the Studio to another and gather pollen and sort of stimulate everybody. I guess that’s the job I do”.
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
The Sun/Uranus trine encourages you to venture outside your Crab cave as you explore and experiment [especially at work]. If you connect with like-minded souls, the sky’s the limit. Full Moon energy prompts you to behave in mysterious or secretive ways over the weekend. Issues from the past could also arise.
The week starts well as Mars and Saturn help you power through projects with plenty of enthusiasm and a practical plan. Don’t waste a precious minute! The combination of energy and endurance is a winning double. But – as the week progresses – avoid being uncharacteristically rash with cash and credit.
LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
You long to be Top Cat, and are brimming over with confident plans and schemes. It’s a wonderful week to do something totally unexpected as Uranus unleashes the adventurous Lion within, and the Full Moon energises your eccentricity zone. So take a trip, explore, experiment … and grab life enthusiastically with both paws!
Later in the week manic Mars charges into your sign [where it stays until January 12] so it’s time to be crazy brave, as you take a calculated risk on an ambitious personal project. Don’t try and do it all on your own though. The more you involve others the more your embryonic plans will blossom and grow in exciting and unexpected ways!
VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
The week starts slowly when you find yourself lost in a foggy and confusing landscape, and misunderstandings abound. Don’t worry Virgo! Give yourself permission to indulge in some delicious daydreams. By the time the weekend comes around, your marvellous mind is firing again.
Artistic inspiration is high early in the week but don’t waste time daydreaming – turn creative ideas into a tangible form. Strive to be creative, compassionate [and only slightly chaotic]. But – unless you concentrate closely – you’re likely to misconstrue what someone says. Show work colleagues plenty of kindness, generosity and support.

Scams are a huge worry when it comes to the travel industry and unwary consumers
How to avoid travel scams The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a warning for all Australians regarding scammer holidays. So far this year, more than $100,000 has been reported lost through travel scams. The ACCC had received 1,650 complaints by October 17, with most individuals targeted over the phone. In some cases, the scammers will keep the ruse going for as long as possible – providing you with authentic looking tickets and vouchers. But, when you reach the airport or theme park, your tickets are rejected and the scammer has disappeared. While travel insurance can help protect you against many holiday disasters, falling for a scam is rarely covered under a normal policy. To ensure you get away on holiday without a scam stopping you at the airport gates, here are three quick tips for avoiding the fraudsters. Be wary of cold-calls If you’ve searched for flights or accommodation online, you could soon start receiving phone calls and emails regarding special deals and prizes you may have won. Any time you share your details online, you are at risk of having this information shared with potential scammers, leading to cold-calls and unsolicited emails. The scammers target an area they know you are already interested in, like travel, and offer vouchers or tickets that you have somehow earned. Only book through accredited agents An unaccredited online agency can take many bookings with no guarantee of following through. Once they have scammed enough people, the website then mysteriously disappears, along with your cash. This is why you should only book through an agent that has been accredited through the Australian Federation of Travel Agents’ ATAS scheme. Or, head in store to talk to a real person as it’s much harder for a scammer to fake an entire shop front. Leave a paper trail When purchasing your tickets online or over the phone, be wary of any agency that insists on any kind of payment other than credit and debit cards, such as cheques and bank or wire transfers.
FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION
Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
How does fitness feature in your life? I’m 24-years-old and just completed my Certificate IV in Fitness. Ever since I was a young kid I have always loved watching and playing sport. It all started when I was five and I played soccer at my local club, Colo Cougars. Other sports I played as a kid were cricket, little athletics, rugby league, motorcross and water skiing. I left school at the end of Year 10 and got an apprenticeship. It was a big change going from school where mum always packed me healthy lunches to working with men who generally ate takeaway. So the healthy lunches started getting thrown in the bin and I started eating fast food almost on a daily basis. It wasn’t long before I was overweight and unhappy. So I decided to go back to where it all started and went back to soccer for a bit of fitness. Unfortunately that wasn’t my greatest decision because with three games left in the season I broke my tibia and fibula and shattered my growth plate in my right ankle. Three operations later and after six months off work I went back and continued my apprenticeship and my poor eating habits. My 19th birthday was my big turning point and not long after, I booked in to see a trainer at my local gym. Since then I have been going to the gym on a regular basis as well as going back to play rugby league.
Now I try and go to the gym around five times a week and enjoy water skiing with my mates on the weekend. Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Enjoy what you’re doing. Find what it is what you enjoy and do it, and don’t just follow the crowd and do something because other people are. 2. Try and make eating healthy and enjoyable. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be plain and boring, it’s all about balance. 3. Doing something is better than doing nothing. A daily ‘must do’? Drink plenty of water.

Biggest health/fitness misconception? That low fat products make you lose weight. It’s important to have good fats. These fats are found in fish, nuts and avocados, and they are a great energy source as well as helping control your weight and mood.

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? I would say it’s my self-confidence and just being happy. How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? It helps me personally to set goals. It’s great to know where you want to be heading.

I’m willing to bet a lot of money that my head never gets cut off by a terrorist and same for me catching Ebola. I would even make that bet to cover my friends and family. Yet I have clients and friends that are stressed out by what might happen to them by everything from terrorists to disease outbreaks to getting kidnapped on the train. Unfortunately I’m willing to make another bet, that stress and lifestyle diseases will kill them long before any armed, diseased terrorist kidnaps them and chops them up. Last week I mentioned that over 90 per cent of diseases are caused or complicated by stress. Let’s pick just one, obesity. Stressed people also often use food and eating to feel better. A recent report shows the global cost of obesity has risen to $2.2 trillion annually – nearly as much as smoking or the combined impact of armed violence, war and terrorism. Obesity isn’t just a health issue, it’s a major economic and business challenge. About 2.1 billion people or 30 per cent of the global population are overweight or obese. As countries get richer, the rate of obesity rises to the same level as that found in more developed countries. It also says nearly half of the world’s adult population will be overweight or obese by 2030, should present trends continue. There’s no single or simple solution to the problem, but global disagreement on how to move forward is hurting progress. It’s a pity the news programs spreading the fear of the latest story that affects a few people aren’t spreading the news of how we might work towards a solution on fixing a problem that affects everyone. But I’m guessing the media companies’ advertising contracts might not go so well if they started saying ‘don’t drink Coke’. There are studies that show stress is actually an easy way to get people to buy more. I wish people would switch off the tabloid news and actually open their eyes to what is really going on. Next time I’m on a train I would happily sit next to a Muslim with ‘I’ve been to Africa’ stamped on his luggage way before I’d sit next to the smart suited CEO of some profits over health driven company.
There are so many Aussie families in crisis this Christmas.

Rat bait should not be put anywhere in your home that either children or pets can reach
VET
VIEW FROM ABOVE
Rat bait poisoning in dogs is very common
The Christmas gift that lasts forever
The use of rat bait around the home is very common to aid in controlling rodents. Unfortunately, rat bait toxicities in dogs are one of the most common toxicities that we see as vets. Most rat baits include green or blue dyes, however, dogs have poor colour vision and often think that these are food. If you know your pet has eaten rat poison, you should let your vet know immediately. How does rat bait work? Rat bait kills by interfering with the ability of the body to produce clotting factors. Rat bait does this by abolishing the recycling of vitamin K in the body which is a vital step in the clotting cascade in the body. This means that as soon as vitamin K reserves are depleted, there can be no clotting in the body. After rat bait is ingested, it takes several days to deplete vitamin K. After it is depleted, even the smallest trauma, like a small cut, can lead to life threatening bleeding. What are the symptoms of poisoning? Signs of poisoning usually appear a few days to a week after ingestion. This happens because it takes a few days to deplete vitamin K. Signs include lethargy, pale gums, bleeding gums, coughing blood, blood in urine or stools and small bruises over the body. How is it diagnosed and treated? Diagnosis is made through history and based on a blood test that can check clotting times. If your animal ingests rat bait in the previous few hours, the vet can give your dog a medicine that will make them vomit; this allows most of the toxin to be removed from the body. An antidote for rat bait (vitamin K) is available and is given for four to six weeks post ingestion. Unfortunately, this long course is required as rat bait can last in the system for an extended period of time. Sometimes rat bait is ingested without the owner’s knowledge and an untreated animal can suffer from severe blood loss. These animals generally require aggressive treatment involving blood and plasma transfusions. Luckily, rat bait poisonings can be treated. It is essential that you advise your vet as soon as you suspect that your pet has eaten rat bait. Treatment is much simpler in the early stages of ingestion. If you decide to use rat bait around your home, please make sure that is can not be accessed by pets or children.
Just this week it was revealed what we will spend our money on this Christmas. It has been estimated, that all up, we will spend $30 billion! What do you think came out on top? As everyone hits the shops in the next few weeks looking for that perfect gift, it is anticipated that we will spend up big on electronic goods, especially Apple products and gaming consoles, along with huge increases in spending at department stores, clothing, footwear, and no doubt a whole lot on food and liquor. So while this all points to a very full time of celebration about to get underway, sadly, too often at Christmas, people overlook the great gift God has given us in Jesus. As you race around the shops with Christmas carols playing in the background, pause for a moment to hear again the words of those carols, because they contain a promise of peace, hope and joy. This promise is not just something to be experienced for a day or two, or perhaps maybe, for even a couple of weeks; for the promise the Bible records, on the a n g e l ’ s announcement of Jesus’ birth, “was good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” It is a promise of “a Saviour” come into our world to bring peace with God. It is promise of a gift that will last into eternity. Too often, once Christmas is over, and all the ‘fizz’ and excitement is gone, we get back into life wondering if that is all there is. Christmas is a great reminder of God’s magnificent gift. This year it would be great if you made it yours!

Ms Crimston’s daughter and Pippa share a special bond. “Charlotte (my daughter) will always share her food with Pippa and they always follow each other around,” Ms Crimston said. “Over the years we have gained a wonderful reputation for offering one of the most unique Christmas ranges anywhere,” Mr Rutherford said. “Each of the 10 rooms of our Lawson heritage gallery is decked to the nines, as the entire building is transformed into a veritable Christmas wonderland.” There are beautifully decorated Christmas trees on show and each room is themed with displays showcasing Victorian, English, Retro, Folk, Children’s and Cottage looks. This year’s theme is ‘Merry and Bright’ and the emphasis of the collection is on more traditional Christmas decorations. Rick Rutherford’s Country is located at 3 Badgery Crescent, Lawson.

PLANNING AHEAD
It’s a difficult conversation, but one that needs to be had NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87
ho will take care of your kids if something happens to you? Who would take care of your finances if you weren’t able to? Who would speak for you if you can’t speak for yourself? Everyone wants to ensure their loved ones will be secure and protected when they lose capacity or pass away. However, in NSW only 56 per cent of people aged between 35 and 49 have a Will, only 19 per cent of people over 35 have an Enduring Guardian and only 40 per cent have a Power of Attorney. Journalist and ambassador for the NSW Government’s Get it in Black and White campaign, Tracey Spicer, said that while many people put estate planning off, in fact the process is much simpler than many people think.
W
Having a conversation about your Will is very important
“There are only three steps required to ensure your wishes are respected when you lose capacity or pass away. These are making a Will and Power of Attorney, and appointing an Enduring Guardian,” she said. “It’s important for people to put plans in place while they still have capacity and can make informed decisions. “By planning ahead you gain the peace of mind that you and your family will be looked after legally, medically and financially if you are to pass away or become incapacitated through injury, dementia, stroke or frailty.” Ms Spicer said the Christmas period is the perfect time for Australians to start the conversation about planning ahead for what will happen in the future. “Christmas time brings families together and I urge everyone to take the opportunity to discuss their future wishes with their parents, spouses and extended family. It’s a difficult conversation to have but it’s so important,” she said. “The process is much easier than most people think and NSW Trustee and Guardian or a solicitor can help you every step of the way.” For more information visit www.planningaheadtools.com.au.

For most people Christmas is a joyous time with family and friends and to reflect on the year that is ending and the one that is about to begin. However for someone whose loved one has passed away, the Christmas season can be a distressing time. Whether the loss is a recent one, or even when several years have passed, the traditions of Christmas often exacerbate feelings of loneliness and the sense that something is missing.

In his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel, David Ellis says that while we think we’re rocketing along when our XPT trains crank up to 160km/h on the run from Sydney to Melbourne, Eurostar that links London with a widening area of Europe has just ordered 17 new trains that will have a top speed of 320km/h – exactly double that of our XPTs. And these appropriately-named e320’s will offer more space around each of their 900 seats than current Eurostar high-speed expresses, be brighter and lighter, will have WiFi connectivity and power outlets at each seat, increased luggage storage‌ and Business Class
passengers will get the bonus of USB sockets. The new trains that are costing onebillion British Pounds (around AU$1.8b) will start going into service in late 2015 to cater for continually-growing demand for high-speed rail in Europe – since beginning services 20 years ago, Eurostar has carried over 150 million passengers including 10 million last year alone. And it’s widening its core routes from London to Paris, Brussels, Lille, the French and Swiss Alps and Geneva, by beginning services next May to Provence by way of Lyon, Avignon and Marseille, and in 2016 to Amsterdam via Antwerp, Rotterdam and Schiphol Airport.
