ith such acclaimed songs as ‘Scar’, ‘Steer’ and ‘The Special Two’, there’s no doubt that the ARIA awardwinning Missy Higgins knows how to write a song that strikes an emotional chord with her audience.

However, for her latest release ‘OZ’, Higgins has turned her attention to a disparate collection of Australian songwriters – from the iconic (Paul Kelly, Slim Dusty, The Angels, Divynils and Icehouse) to the eclectic (The Drones, Something For Kate, Blackeyed Susans and Perry Keys). The results are astounding. Her version of the mesmeric Drones track ‘Shark Fin Blues’ alone will leave you gobsmacked. If the new album wasn’t enough, Higgins has also coupled it with a book of sprawling and engaging essays that reflect on her associations with each song on the album – creating a much more personal experience akin to pouring over lyrics and liner notes for a deeper understanding in the vinyl heyday – something that is increasingly rare in the age of digitised music. Higgins admitted that the idea for the album and book had been germinating for quite some time. “It is quite a relief to have it all finished because it has been quite a long time coming,” she said. “The idea started in between my second and third album (2007’s ‘On A Clear Night’ and 2012’s ‘The Ol’ Razzale Dazzle’) and then when it finally popped up again it really felt like it was the right time to tackle it. “The idea for the book kind of evolved naturally with the album. I had an idea to write a book – a memoir – but then I came to the conclusion that I’m not really old enough for that stuff yet. But I really wanted to dabble in writing some more and so it seemed like a perfect fit. The book hopefully gives people a deeper experience and delves a little bit more into my upbringing and how I came to choose the songs that ended up on the record.” The brilliance of the album is that while Higgins has turned her talents to some
of Australia’s best-loved songwriters, the album never comes off as sounding overly sentimental, as she didn’t necessarily want to pick the most obvious choices. “While there are some icons, like Slim Dusty and The Angels on there, I didn’t necessarily want to go for the obvious choice,” she said. “It was more about finding great Australian songs that really spoke to me in a way that I felt I could re-interpret them because I’m always really inspired by cover versions of songs that have that effect on me and make me see the song in a different light.” While Higgins said the project’s title was an obvious nod to the location of the writers interpreted, it also had a second meaning. “I like the idea of songwriters being like the Wizard in ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Some people think we’re special people who have special powers but we’re really just scared little people hiding in a backroom somewhere, working like crazy to make sure we don’t get found out,” she said. Aside from the eclectic cast of characters that form the inspiration for OZ, Higgins also enlisted the formidable talents of the likes of Kate Miller-Heidke, Amanda Palmer and Dan Sultan (whose track ‘Old Fitzroy’ also gets the ‘OZ’ treatment). Acclaimed US songwriter/producer Jherek Bischoff (Amanda Palmer, David Byrne, The Kronos Quartet) oversaw the production duties. “Working with Jherek was just incredible,” Higgins enthused. “He’s come up with these incredibly beautiful string arrangements for the album and just watching him work was really quite inspiring.” All of this creative output doesn’t end with the album and book either, as Higgins is expecting her first child in January next year. “Yeah I’m quite pregnant now, but by the time the tour wraps up I’ll be extremely pregnant so, hopefully I’ll get the chance to sit back and reflect on everything for a while before a whole new adventure begins in January – it’s very exciting.” Missy Higgins will be performing at The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Tuesday, October 7. Tickets are $59.90. To book or for more information visit www.jspac.com.au or call 4723 7600.

Wickedly great fun as best Broadway show hits Oz
A
ward-winning musical ‘Wicked’ blew audiences away in its last Sydney season and now it’s back to once again delight and
entertain. The new season has just kicked off and will no doubt be another successful round for the worldwide phenomenon. KATE REID @kate_reid6
The show takes a look at life before Dorothy arrived in Oz in everyone’s childhood classic ‘The Wizard of Oz’. ‘Wicked’ follows the lives of two very different girls, one beautiful and popular, the other smart yet misunderstood, which is surely not helped by the fact she has emerald green skin. Audiences learn exactly how these friends became two of the most well known characters in Oz, Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West. The best part is that if you are one of the (very) few who haven’t seen the ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Wicked’ holds its own as an independent story.

The 2014 season of ‘Wicked’ will see both new and old faces take to the stage for the show’s 10th Anniversary tour. Lucy Durack will reprise her role as Glinda and Jemma Rix will once again take on the role of Elphaba aka the Wicked Witch of the West. Newcomer Steve Danielsen will star in his first musical theatre leading role as Fiyero and Reg Livermore will delight audiences as the Wizard. ‘Wicked’ has been extraordinarily successful, taking its place as Broadway’s number one show for a staggering 10 consecutive years. Each week the Broadway version of the production rakes in over US$1.8 million and the show has attracted more than 40 million audience members worldwide. Tickets are on sale now so if you missed ‘Wicked’ the last time be sure not to make the same mistake again. ‘Wicked the Musical’ is now on at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre. Channel Ten field new sports show An old favourite, ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is back this Tuesday from 7.30pm on Seven, and I must say I might give this series a go this year. Producers have managed to put a pretty good cast together this time around and I’m really looking forward to seeing some of the oldies dance like former ‘Idol’ judge Mark Holden and ‘Home and Away’ star Lynne McGranger.
Channel Ten will premiere a new sports panel show called ‘The Thursday Night Sport Show’ this Thursday, October 2 at 9.30pm. The new series will air on ONE HD and will be hosted by spunk Mel McLaughlin and include regular panellists Mark Howard and Sam Mac. The show will discuss all sports including NRL, AFL, A-League, NFL and Cricket.
A few years after the Comedy Channel dumped Jay Leno and his ‘Tonight Show’, the buggers have done it again axing the hugely popular ‘Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’. Fortunately, the show can still be seen on ABC2 7.40pm weeknights.
Next Monday, October 6, Channel Ten will launch a new political drama starring Asher Keddie called ‘Party Tricks’. Keddie plays Victorian State Premier Kate Ballard, pitted against shock new opponent and media personality David McLeod in an election campaign.
How time has flown! This week two iconic shows celebrated 50 years since they premiered on US television: ‘Bewitched’ and ‘The Addams Family’. Interestingly, despite its popularity, ‘The Addams Family’ only lasted two seasons on air while ‘Bewitched’ ran for eight years.
One for comic book lovers, ‘Supergirl’ is about to get her own TV series produced by Warner Bros. The series is based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, who shares the super powers of her cousin Superman along with his vulnerability to Kryptonite. Sounds good to me!

VOLUNTEER TODAY PRIMARY ETHICS TEACHERS NEEDED
To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered
to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.
“
This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.
”
Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and
trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved.
entertainment
While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices.
Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

It’s been a few years between albums for Prince. His last release was 2010’s aptly titled ‘20Ten’ that had a limited release, being given away for free in print publications like the UK’s Daily Mirror and Germany’s Rolling Stone magazine. After a long wait for fans, the music icon has returned this month with a new solo record ‘Art Official Age’. From the sound of the tracks released so far Prince hasn’t lost his touch. There’s surely not many artists that can do funk as well as Prince can. Or maintain the same longevity he has; it’s been almost 40 years since Prince’s first studio album ‘For You’. Several tracks have been released from the album including ‘Breakfast Can Wait’, which provides a smooth, catchy foundation for Prince’s signature suggestive lyrics; while ‘Clouds’ is a sexy funk tune that features folk and soul songstress Lianne La Havas. Fans will be in Prince heaven this month, with the artist also releasing the album ‘Plectrumelectrum’, which is a collaboration with his band 3rdEyeGirl. The records will be Prince’s first releases since his return to Warner Bros. who he originally split with in the 90s.
Football fans will be in their element with the release of ‘FIFA 15 Ultimate Team Edition’. This new release is designed to put gamers in amongst the action, with features that give more of a life like experience than ever before. Players will show emotion based on what happens on the field with over 600 new emotional reactions at their disposal. The game also features team tactics that are adjusted just like those of players in a real

match. On screen players come to life with incredible facial detail and gear gets dirtier and more worn as the game progresses, while the pitch develops boot marks and visible debris as it would in a real match. FIFA has gone to great lengths to make the experience as real as possible, and there’s no doubt gamers will be happy with their efforts. It’s been labelled the best of the FIFA series so far by numerous critics.

This old ship has found a second life as a holiday retreat on lake Erie DAVE ELLIS
e’ve written over the years about some pretty strange things that have become homes, retreats and even offices. But one that got our attention in North America recently was probably the best yet in the one-offs: the complete bridge, captain’s quarters, deck and bow from a-once Ford Motor Company cargo ship now sits atop a little promontory on Lake Erie as the ultimate in holiday homes. The ship from which it came was the coal and iron-ore carrier Benson Ford, named after a grandson of the company’s founder, Henry. It did sterling service across North America’s Great Lakes for some 57 years – and although running aground on a couple of occasions, never suffered any major harm. Henry Ford loved the ship as a relaxing way of visiting his factories around the Great Lakes, and to ensure his absolute in creature comforts, designed much of the vessel’s walnut-lined owner’s quarters himself. But by 1981 her days were up, and the

Benson Ford was decommissioned so her name could be given to a newer ship of the Ford fleet. The hull was then re-named John Dykstra II, after the Hollywood special effects and computer genius whom George Lucas recruited to make such blockbusters as ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Spider-Man 2’. But she never sailed a single nautical mile under her new name, instead languishing dockside for four years until being unexpectedly rescued by an Ohio couple – who to the surprise and bemusement of many, oxy’d-off the entire forecastle, deck and bow, and floated this strange sight 100km by barge to Put-in-Bay on Lake Erie’s South Bass Island. There the four-storey structure was lifted by cranes to the top of a low promontory protruding into the lake, allowing its new owners to take in the most wondrous views from their bizarre-looking new home. Ohio father and son, Jerry and Bryan Kasper bought the home off the couple some years later and have turned it into a holiday retreat most of us could only fantasise about. And they’ve returned the name Benson Ford to the bow. Were he around today, it would doubtless suit old Henry to a T.

egular readers will know of our penchant for the more unusual names bestowed on the labels of wines of many Aussie makers. And while one we came across recently may not rate with the actually unusual, it is how it came about that intrigued us. It’s Shottesbrooke Vineyards in South Australia’s McLaren Flat and it was so-named by company founder Nick Holmes in 1984 after an estate in Berkshire, England where Nick’s grandfather, Richard Holmes was parish priest from 1905 to 1926. And the label has certainly succeeded in spreading the Shottesbrooke name in this country, with Nick’s Shiraz something plenty of buffs have for years enjoyed pouring and sharing with friends. The latest release from a classic 2012 vintage is a real ripper reflecting winemaker Hamish Maguire’s skill with this variety. This is a wine with a lovely crimson-purple colour, and which is elegant and supple with black fruits foremost on the palate. Pay $20 and match it perfectly with pepper-crusted venison. One to note: Chardonnay buffs should be overjoyed with a rewarding 2011 under the Estate label of Victoria’s Toolangi Vineyards. Made from low-cropped, hand-harvested fruit, this one has beautiful white peach and melon flavours to the fore, suggestions of apple and lemon, and gentle acid to round it all out. Pay $35 and enjoy with a range of dishes from herb-sprinkled roast chicken, to creamy prawns.

Here’s an idea worth smiling about KATHERINE TWEED
life & style
of the same woman with her wrinkles photoshopped out, her hair thickened and her skin brightened but regardless, the stats provide food for thought. Particularly given that the study also revealed that 52 per cent of women are not satisfied with their antiaging products. With half of us forking out hundreds of dollars a year on anti-aging skincare products that don’t feel or look like they are working, I have to ask, what’s the point? Should women be turning their backs on attempting to revive the skin they had in their twenties or should they be looking for more permanent ways to bring back their youthfulness? This study certainly seems to suggest that taking care of your teeth, getting them whitened or investing in some form of teeth straightening has a massive impact on people’s perception of age. And in saying that, I think it also offers a message and a reminder to the younger of us; we know that keeping out of the sun and protecting our skin will help to keep our skin looking youthful, but we mustn’t forget to take care of our teeth and hair as well.
katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_
Teeth straightening can have a dramatic impact on your look and perceived age
Do you think it’s your wrinkles making you look older? How about your thinning hair? Well, it turns out that while these things are on the top of many people’s lists of the signs of ageing, there are other facial characteristics that are making us look older. You may not have considered it, but our teeth actually have the potential to age us considerably, well according to a recent study that is. The study, commissioned by Invisalign, found that four in five women agree that straight, healthy looking teeth make people look younger; and how much younger you might ask – 95 per cent of women said an average of seven years. I have to admit that I was a little sceptical about this study, given that it has been funded and run by a company that straightens people’s teeth, but their research speaks for itself. The company showed over 1,000 participants images of the same women back-to-back, with only one minor change made in the second image. The first image in the set depicted a woman with uneven teeth. The participants were asked, based on that image, to rank the five common signs of aging in order of impact – they were lines and wrinkles, peeling/sagging skin, thinning hair, dull skin and uneven teeth. As you would expect, lines and wrinkles were chosen as having the highest impact on age perception, with an uneven smile coming in as having the least impact. The participants were then shown images of the same woman however in the second image, the woman’s teeth had been altered and she now was sporting a straight smile. The participants were again asked to rank the same signs of aging in order of their influence on the perception of age but this time based on the changes they had seen in both images. 94 per cent changed their answer, with the majority saying that the state of a person’s teeth had the biggest impact on ageing and coming in at a close second was lines and wrinkles. Admittedly, in order to be a truly well rounded study, the participants should have been also been shown separate images

Metal can make a small difference to the price of an engagement ring
WW6547
How much should you spend on a ring? While I don’t like to discuss dollars and prices in my column I also feel the need to touch on this a little as it’s a question that we are often asked at York Jewellers. Men who come shopping for engagement rings by themselves often have an idea in mind of what design they would like but when it comes to price they don’t really know what they ‘should’ spend. The main questions regarding price are, “How much does an engagement ring cost?” and “How much should I be spending?”. Many years ago this magical figure was determined by multiplying the gent’s monthly salary by three. I’m not sure if anyone uses that method anymore! What you spend on your engagement ring is entirely up to you. It should be whatever you feel comfortable with and at York Jewellers we will offer you the best quality and value for your money. Another query that we are often faced with is, “Will it cost more to have my engagement ring specially designed?”. The simple answer to this is no. Part of the service that we offer is to sit down with you and design the ring of your dreams. We want you to truly love what you are wearing and we feel that you shouldn’t have to pay more just because what you want isn’t necessarily readily made up. The beauty of jewellery design (and this is one of the things that I love about what we do) is that almost anything that you can think of is possible! There are a couple of things that can change the price of a ring from something that you have seen in the cabinet. One is the detail in the ring and the other will be the diamond itself. If you are designing a ring with a lot of detail that will take many hours to craft, it can add a little to the price, which is only natural given the hours needed to complete it. Metal can make a small difference in the price, for example going from gold to platinum. And of course diamond size and quality can too. As you go through the diamond specifications with our consultants you’ll be able to make a decision based on what you feel comfortable with. You can book a consultation with one of our designers through our website at www.yorkjewellers.com.au/appointments.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Avoid being argumentative Aries. If you practice the gentle art of persuasion, you’ll be surprised how much easier life can be. Draw inspiration from birthday great Mohandas Gandhi: “Leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.” It’s a wonderful weekend to escape, explore and experiment.
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Bulls are often stubborn souls, which can put others offside. This week Venus (your ruling planet) shifts into Libra, which highlights your innate desire for harmony and balance in your daily life. So strive to be more adaptable, as others won’t behave in rational or predictable ways.

This week Venus encourages love, romance, convivial conversation and calm cooperation. Plus socialising with friendly folk who are fun and fashionable. But the weekend develops in a rather shambolic fashion, as Mercury shifts into retrograde mode. If you are flexible and adapt to changing circumstances, then you’ll have a lot of fun, games, hassles and hijinks along the way!
Librans are famous for being fashionistas and the classiest sign in the zodiac. This week, with Venus transiting into your sign, your natural elegance and sense of style shines for all the world to see. Don’t be too preoccupied with outer appearances though! The only real elegance is in the mind; if you’ve got that, the rest really comes from it.
Star predictions for the week beginning Sept 28
CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
With mighty Mars charging through your sign until October 26 there’s a fine line between being proactive and just plain pushy. So strive to be more kind, considerate and cooperative. Sagittarians love to talk up a storm, but make a concentrated effort to listen closely to what others have to say. As birthday great Truman Capote observed, “A conversation is a dialogue, not a monologue.”
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Venus shifts into your career zone until October 24 so it’s a terrific time to improve the function and look of your work space; apply for a promotion or new job; or take on some volunteer work. Dress to impress! A combination of creativity and collaboration helps you move up to the next level professionally.
LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Proud Lions love to pounce. But this week’s stars encourage you to get the balance right between being a cautious Cat, and grabbing lucky opportunities when they come along. Compulsive thinking and bossy behaviour are a danger on the weekend, but stressing about things won’t help matters.
Be proactive about creating your preferred future, as you focus your energy on potential projects that make your heart sing. Mars and Uranus boost your devil-may-care attitude on the weekend as you go hiking, biking or camping in the great outdoors; or embark on a grand Aquarian adventure.
VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Venus moves into your money zone until October 24, which is good news for cash-strapped Virgos. Be very careful how you pass on information this weekend though, as Mercury goes retrograde. If you criticise others, then you’ll be misunderstood. A cautious and diplomatic approach is the clever way to go.

from student loans can stop your teen from investments like a house
All you need to know about banking for teens Educating teenagers about financial choices, saving and budgeting is vital for ensuring the next generation of Australian adults are savvy and in the best possible situation to support themselves and their families. • Learning by osmosis Without even realising they are doing it, teenagers absorb information from the world around them and learn from observation. Watching their parents deal with money can influence their own financial abilities, so it’s important that parents ensure they are making the right choices. • First jobs and first pay Young teens typically land their first job while still in high school. This move can start them on a path towards 9-5 work and earning potential. How a teen deals with their first paycheck can tell you a lot about their future finances. Some young people will head straight out on a spending spree, some may put it aside in order to save up for a bigger purchase and others choose to invest. • Online trumps the branch In the past the only way you could transfer funds, pay bills and open new accounts was by heading into your local branch and speaking to a bank employee. These days, close to everything can be done online. With banking apps available on their mobile phones, teenagers may never step foot into their bank’s branches. Convenient and accessible, online banking is a trend that is changing the face of finances for every generation. • Getting into debt early Many teens are considering university or some other form of higher education. Unfortunately, these qualifications do not come cheap. Student debt is a relatively new phenomenon in Australia, with past generations generally not having to spend up large in order to graduate. This means the younger population is stepping into the adult world with a significant debt already on their shoulders. A study from Melbourne University has forecast it will take men 15 years and women a massive 26 years to pay off the typical student debt. This will likely make it more difficult for teens to make important investments.
FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION
MARY ELASI All you can do is give your best Mentally and physically it has put me in a really good place. I honestly know that the time and effort I put in now are a huge investment into my future health.
Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
Top three tips for good health? 1. Real food is a must. Steer clear of processed, packaged or fast foods. They often contain added preservatives, refined sugars or flavour enhancers, all of which our bodies are better off without. Learn to read labels. 2. Don’t EVER look to a glossy mag, mainstream TV, or tabloids for health or dietary advice. They are in the business of selling their product not caring for your health. The fad diets, slimming products, pills and potions are for the most part a marketed product selling a promise. 3. Make time for you! Stop putting yourself last, it’s not selfish to exercise. Set aside this time, enjoy it and reap the benefits. A daily ‘must do’? You absolutely must start the day with a good breakfast, it’s essential for your energy levels!
What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I really love resistance training, even more so in the past few years since I have focused my training to be much more goal specific. How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? There are times I feel a little flat. At those times I just tell myself: “You didn’t come this far by missing, cutting or bludging on a session”. Immediately I’m back in the zone and ready to train. I’ve accepted that I can’t be at 100 per cent every session, but as long as I always give my best on the day I’m happy.
Biggest health/fitness misconception? The fear that many women have to lift weights because they will get “big”! If it were that easy every guy would be Arnie in his hey day. ALL women should lift weights to build stronger bones, improve their metabolism, strengthen and tone muscle, burn fat (yes, that’s right) and improve their overall body composition. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy?
Freestyle - anything else you want to say? I always look at people training and think “have they made their time count?” While any activity is better than none, I am a firm believer that if you put the time in, you might as well be getting the most out of it. If you keep challenging, you keep changing. Another thing that troubles me is when people constantly give the excuse that they don’t have the time to exercise. We are all time poor, everyone is.
life & style
How does fitness feature in your life? I had a light bulb moment. I realised that my children (they were four, three and one at the time) were a reason to get healthy; not my excuse to remain overweight. I decided to stop making excuses and start making time to take responsibility for what I had done to myself. I started the process with a goal to lose 10kg, but instead I’ve lost over 20, gained good strength and now I’m a PT helping others reach their fitness potential.

Sugar should be seen as explicitly unhelpful to the health of your teeth
WW12530
Friday 26 September 2014 the western weekender • west life
When does sweet become too bitter to swallow? It’s hard to control how much sugar you eat every day and companies know it’s hard to tell what is added sugar. Names such as sucrose, dextrose, hydrolysed starch, honey, evaporated cane juice, agave nectar and many others can be used to add to the confusion. But many experts say people should get no more than three per cent of their daily calories from sugars. Even the very reserved World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations state that adults should get no more than 10 per cent of their daily calories from ‘free’ sugars. A study has examined public health records from countries across the world. It found that sugar intake that accounted for 10 per cent of energy intake, “induces a costly burden of tooth decay. Sugar is also raising levels of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and many other largely preventable diseases”. Study author Aubrey Sheiham, emeritus professor of dental public health at UCL, said, “Data from Japan was particularly revealing, as the population had no access to sugar during or shortly after the Second World War. We found that decay was hugely reduced during this time, but then increased as they began to import sugar again”. “Similarly, only two per cent of people at all ages living in Nigeria had tooth decay, when their diet contained almost no sugar, about 2g a day. “This is in stark contrast to the USA, where 92 per cent of adults have experienced tooth decay. “We need to make sure that use of fruit juices and the concept of sugar-containing treats for children are not only no longer promoted, but explicitly seen as unhelpful.” Food provided at daycare and schools should not have added sugar. Things like vending machines offering processed junk and sugary drinks should be removed. They are there for one reason; to make someone money. Bad luck it’s at the expense of your child’s health! We should all be aware of just how much sugar we are putting in our body because it’s doing us no favours and in the long term can have serious detrimental effects.

Acute kidney disease can be caused if a pet swallows a toxin
VET
VIEW FROM ABOVE
When your natural filter stops working
What are you really waiting for?
As our animals get older, we start to see several diseases that occur due to old age. We have previously discussed both diabetes and overactive thyroid disorders and today we will discuss kidney problems in pets. What do the kidneys do? Just like in humans, kidneys act as the body’s filter. They filter through the blood and remove waste products that are excreted in the urine. They are also responsible for maintaining normal concentrations of salts and water in the body. They also have secondary roles of controlling blood pressure, helping in regulating blood calcium levels and encouraging red blood cell production. When the kidneys don’t function properly, toxins build up and will make an animal feel very ill. What causes kidney problems in animals? There are two classes of kidney problems in pets – acute and chronic. Acute kidney disease is a sudden decline in function and this is generally related to the ingestion of a toxin such as lillies in cats, certain medications, antifreeze or toxic foods. Acute kidney failure can often be reversed if it is treated quickly. On the other hand, chronic kidney disease develops slowly over a matter of months to years and mostly affects older animals. In some cases, chronic kidney disease has an underlying cause such as high blood pressure, hereditary problems or ongoing bacterial infection. What are the signs of kidney disease? Because the kidneys perform so many functions, the signs of kidney disease can vary quite a bit. The most common signs include increased thirst and urination, vomiting, lack of appetite, weight loss and generalised depression or weakness. How is it diagnosed? Diagnosis is made through blood and urine testing. Some animals need more advanced tests like an ultrasound to see if there is an underlying problem. Can kidney disease be treated? Treatment depends on the severity of the disease and whether it is acute or chronic. Animals with sudden onset kidney disease due to a toxin can sometimes be cured. However, there is no ‘cure’ for chronic kidney disease and treatment aims to minimise symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.
Most of us have been there. Sitting, waiting in the doctor’s surgery. Waiting to see doctors. Waiting for treatment. Waiting for x-rays and scans and blood tests. Waiting for results. Waiting in outer waiting rooms to be then moved into the inner waiting room where you wait some more! So much waiting! What do you do while you wait? It’s an interesting experience. The people you meet. The things you see and hear. Cups of tea and coffee. Arnott’s arrowroot biscuits. Watching uninspiring TV shows and senseless commercials about vacuum cleaners or knife sets or the latest miracle beauty product. Sharing people’s joy at good news and their devastation when results don’t go the way they’re hoping for. And that is a big question; what happens when hope is gone? The Bible describes Christian hope as an “anchor for the soul, firm and secure”. This means that even in the face of the worst news, Christian people are able to rest firm on the real, certain hope found in Jesus. One of the great joys of being united to Jesus, of being able to trust in the God who keeps His promises is not that we escape hardship, but that our hope in Jesus gives us a firm anchor for our soul! It is an anchor that holds us fast even in the most troubling of times. The Bible’s words are not just words on a page. They are real words of comfort that can sustain your life. In fact, the confident hope that Jesus gives is a hope which has sustained the lives of millions of people throughout history. Do not be afraid; put your hope in Jesus.

In June of 2000 the Queen officially opened the first bridge across London’s River Thames since the Tower Bridge in 1894. And naming it the London Millennium Bridge, locals almost instantly re-dubbed it the Wibbly Wobbly Bridge – that’s stuck to this day. Because so ‘wibbly wobbly’ was it back in 2000, that just two days after opening, the 325m long and GBP18.2m (AU$32m) structure was closed for two years for “sway dampeners” to be fitted to the structure to stop an unexpected and disconcerting lateral sway. Linking the Globe Theatre and Tate Modern Museum on one side of the
Thames and St Paul’s Cathedral on the other, the bridge alignment is such that a clear view of St Paul’s south façade is presented from across the river, framed by the bridge supports. But the pedestrian-only bridge quickly showed it could get up a sway whenever big numbers were crossing on it. And as these crowds would step from side to side in unison to adjust to the sway, that sway simply got bigger, and bigger and bigger… After being closed for two years the Millennium Bridge is used safely and sway-free today by as many as 2,000 people at any one time. It’s now a tourist attraction in its own right.

next week. The Sydney riders, who are just a fraction of the 300 motorbike riders taking part, will begin their week-long journey to Uluru from 8am at Glenbrook on Monday, September 29. The one-of-a-kind initiative is aimed at raising awareness about prostate cancer and much needed funds to support families affected by the disease. Joining the riders at Glenbrook on Monday is event ambassador, ‘Weekend Sunrise’ TV weatherman, James Tobin. “Signing up to the ride was a no-brainer. I love to get on my bike and if I can do it to support a great cause then it’s even better. It shocked me to learn that more men die of prostate cancer each year than women die of breast cancer. help change that statistic is worthwhile for me,” said Mr Tobin. Supporters from Penrith are welcome to see the team off from 7am on Monday. “It’s been an incredible eight years for The Long Ride, and we are continuing to strive to speak to more men each year about the risks of prostate cancer,” said event organiser Chris Dunne. “Many of the men and women involved are prostate cancer survivors or people who have had loved ones touched by the disease. The riders come from all walks of life for this unique event and it’s wonderful to see them all come together to support the great work being done by PCFA.” With riding groups leaving from many of the country’s major cities and making their way simultaneously to Australia’s centre, the event will also spread awareness in rural and regional areas. “We are blown away by the support The Long Ride initiative receives from the community each year,” said Associate Professor Anthony Lowe, CEO of PCFA. new book has been released that will provide much appreciated insider advice to all those seniors looking to get the best bargains while booking their retirement holidays. Travel deals publisher, Travelzoo is offering seniors the opportunity to download a free e-book, which reveals all the tips and tricks of its 250 qualified ‘deal experts’ who have spent years seeking out the best value deals for subscribers. The first chapter, ‘How to save a fortune on flights’ was released this week to the company’s subscribers, featuring tips on when to buy flights, how to score an upgrade and how to use comparison sites smartly. “The travel industry is unregulated and highly fragmented, which means it’s hard to know which deals offer true value. However on the plus side, if you have the time and, more importantly, the knowledge you can save a fortune,” said Brad Gurrie, CEO of Travelzoo Australia. “This is why our deal experts decided to publish an e-book, because we wanted to share our knowledge on how to get a genuine deal and avoid disappointment.” Travelzoo’s team research meticulously each week to come up with

A new travel book has been released the best deals to print in their Top 20 e-newsletter. “Our evaluation process is quite exhaustive - we look at all the other deal websites and research airlines, hotels and entertainment providers to make sure we have the most competitive price,” Mr Gurrie said. “The insights we have gained from this process will be used in our new e-book How to save a fortune on travel. We will be releasing a new chapter every month until we have shared all our knowledge.” To find out more about Travelzoo or to download the first chapter of the book, visit their website www.travelzoo.com/ au/.

our heart and hearing may have more in common than you realise according to expert audiologists from Attune Hearing. Attune Hearing is raising awareness of the link between hearing loss and cardiovascular disease for World Heart Day this Monday, September 29. A growing body of research shows that a person’s hearing health and cardiovascular health frequently correspond. Studies show that a healthy cardiovascular system – a person’s heart, arteries and veins – has a positive effect on hearing. Conversely, inadequate blood flow and trauma to the blood vessels of the inner ear can contribute to hearing loss. David R. Friedland, Professor and ViceChair of Otolaryngology and Communications Sciences at the Medical College
Y
of Wisconsin, has been studying the relationship between cardiovascular and hearing health for years. “The inner ear is so sensitive to blood flow that it is possible that abnormalities in the cardiovascular system could be noted here earlier than in other less sensitive parts of the body,” he said. Below are five heart-healthy reasons to get a hearing test: 1. Six decades of research points to heart-hearing health link. 2. The ear may be a window to the heart. 3. The same lifestyle behaviours that effect the heart impact hearing. 4. Addressing hearing loss improves quality of life and helps reduce stress. 5. Today’s hearing aids are better than ever and are virtually invisible. Attune Hearing is challenging people to take a free, confidential, 15 minute hearing check at any of their national clinics. For more information on hearing loss or to book an appointment at Attune Hearing call 1800 195 155.

Holiday fun ith one week of school holidays down, there is no doubt that local kids have already been and done all their pre-planned school holiday activities. Parents would have already watched a dozen movies, worn used shoes at the bowling alley, squeezed the budget on popcorn, ice cream and lollies and now are beginning to hear those dreaded words, “I’M BORED”. But for local parents, there is no need to worry about planning or organising activities for the kids because St Marys Town Centre Ltd has done it all for them. “All of this planning and budgeting for school holidays can drive any parent crazy (and broke), and that’s why we’ve done the hard work for you,” said St Marys Town Centre Manager, Paulette Adams. “These school holidays in Coachmans Park we have some awesome and fun ideas for the kids that won’t break the bank. “St Marys Town Centre Ltd have called in the big guns these holidays and we are offering free, yes free, activities to keep the kids entertained for hours.” The fabulous team from Kozi and Pinky will be down at the iconic Coachmans
