SPECIAL REPORT
The unsung heroes keeping the community alive It takes a special type of person to wake up in the chilly dark of winter and head down to Judges car park before daybreak to provide a hot breakfast to the less fortunate, learns journalist Cassandra O’Connor...
ehind the scenes of any organisation is a backbone. At Christ Mission Possible (CMP), a local charity dedicated to making life easier for those who find themselves homeless, this backbone is made up of 11 staff and over 200 volunteers. Founded in 1999 by local couple Abraham and Allyson Akkary taking equipment into remote areas of Papua New Guinea, CMP began providing a few meals for the poverty-stricken in September 2006. This week however, the charity will have supported 7,000 people with food and provided over 1,500 meals on the streets or through school programs. Albert Tevita is responsible for CMP’s food services. He originally worked in local schools helping disadvantaged kids, and had been volunteering with CMP for two years before he joined as a permanent staff member. After a busy morning handing out fresh fruit and vegetables, he is enjoying a cup of coffee before heading off to collect more food donations. “The rewarding part of working for CMP is changing someone’s life,” he tells me. “A little while ago we had an old man who travelled out here to the Food Shop. He came all the way from Canterbury, but not for himself, his neighbour. “He collapsed outside and we needed to call an ambulance. “That was a really important moment for me, because it was so touching that one man would go to such extraordinary lengths to help his neighbour.” He stares at the front car park where the man collapsed. “Sometimes I’ll be doing my work and another driver will cut me off on the road, and it is easy to get caught up in the little things. Then I come here and realise what real problems people have, that we all focus on things that are so small in comparison to what these people are going through,” he says. “We get some really ‘real people’ here that don’t look like much, but then when you speak to them, you know their story and you know what they have gone through. I like that part of my job.” Speaking with ‘real people’ is also what Sarah Sheperd loves about her time with CMP. You might find her in the CMP office or out on a Thursday evening at Kingswood Station making tea and coffee for the local dinner service. “I prefer to spend my time here, the people are real,” she tells me. “People have given so much to me over the years, this is just may way of giving back.” But Ms Sheperd gives a lot more than she takes. She’s been volunteering in one capacity or another her entire life. Her calling though has been helping
with the Christians Against Poverty (CAP) service that works in conjunction with CMP to provide the only charitable, free financial counselling service in Australia. “When I heard about CAP I knew that was what I wanted to do,” she says. “We go to people’s homes and collect their information about their debt and then that information is sent to our head office where they figure out what the best course of action is. “Some people have no choice but to become insolvent but we help them through the process the entire way. “Even well to do people can fall on hard times through no fault of their own.” That’s what paramedic Dan Sasson and nurse Victoria Perry quickly found out. The pair are part of Community Medic, a volunteer group of trained health profes-

sionals who attend breakfasts like those hosted by CMP. “These people don’t trust institutions, it takes a long time to earn their trust so that they can talk about anything from drug use to mental health issues,” explains Mr Sasson. There are 25 volunteers with Community Medic who visit western Sydney charity dinners and breakfasts almost every night of the week, on top of working shifts as Ambulance paramedics and nurses. Marty Beckett is the CEO of CMP and he says volunteers are the lifeblood of the community. “Our volunteers and staff do so much, it makes me proud of our community,” he says. Dan Sasson, Marty, Victoria Perry and Mike at Judges car park on a chilly Wednesday morning and isn’t afraid to give you a giant bear hug, says that CMP is an extension of his own role as pastor of the Church of the Rock, even though the two are separate. “A couple of years back God was telling me that I cannot just pastor a building, I need to pastor a community. That’s why I enjoy being involved with CMP so much, it’s about the people, our people,” he says. That message really hit home a couple of years ago. “There was woman who would always turn up to the dinners, completely drunk, but always in a friendly mood. I would listen to what some of the people on the street would say about her, about her alcoholism, her relationships,” he said.
“Then one day I got a call from the hospital saying that she had been diagnosed with a tumour in her neck and was asking for her pastor. I didn’t recognise her from church but then it clicked. “I went to the hospital and for the first time in over 20 years she was sober. I asked her to tell me her story and she told me how when she was 11 she was sexually abused by her uncle. She had been an alcoholic ever since.” Marty says there are many other people like that woman that need help and that’s his motivation. “Everyone at CMP is just here to help out and that’s what makes our organisation really beautiful.” To find out more visit www.cmp.org.au.

FEATURE STORY
From the White Album to American punk rock With Grinspoon on hiatus, Phil Jamieson has found a myriad of projects to occupy himself with including acoustic performances and some rather productive collaborations
hen my call gets connected to Phil Jamieson I find him in a Sydney hotel room doing his washing before he heads out for dumplings and a movie. The same time the day before he was on the Concert Hall stage at the Opera House in front of thousands of people, dressed in a baby blue jacket and bow tie singing songs from the Beatles’ ‘White Album’ and getting rather intimate with a select few audience members.
W KATE REID @kate_reid6
Such is the life of the frontman of one of Australia’s most loved rock bands, Grinspoon. Last year the band decided to go on an indefinite hiatus, which has left Jamieson to occupy himself. One of the ways he is filling the time is by doing another round of the hugely successful ‘The Beatles’ White Album Concert Series’ with his equally talented contemporaries Chris Cheney (The Living End), Tim Rogers (You Am I) and singer/ songwriter Josh Pyke. “It’s a very magical experience to do that show. It’s just an honour for me to be involved and I’m having a ball as you can probably tell,” Jamieson explains. The ‘White Album’ – as it is known though it is actually self titled – is hugely diverse with the 30 tracks coming from a range of genres including rock, jazz and avante garde. “It’s not the easiest record, sure there’s some big hits on it like ‘U.S.S.R’ and ‘Blackbird’ but then there’s some really crazy weird songs like ‘Piggies’ and stuff that is just so off its head,” says Jamieson. Along with the White Album tour Jamieson has been heading out on acoustic dates, and audiences will get a chance to see him perform at the Tattersalls Hotel on Friday, August 1. “I will probably look quite sharp, I’ll be dressed well,” he explains of the upcoming gig. “I’m going to bring a drummer and a bass player to fill out some of the songs. I might do a cover of a couple of songs and I might tell some funny jokes.” Jamieson also hints at a smoke machine and a bubble machine joining him on stage as well. “It’s going to be great, I can’t wait. And also the Panthers are having a good year right? So it’s a good time to be out in Penrith,” he said. After Grinspoon decided to have an indefinite period of time apart, Jamieson found that getting a normal job wasn’t really going to be an option. Thank god for that because what audiences clearly want is more of the talented performer. So with his acoustic guitar in tow he
The band went on hiatus and I learnt how to cook
headed out for some slightly quieter gigs than the ones he played with Grinspoon. “It’s very lonely,” he jokes about the solo work. “Basically the band went on hiatus in December and I sat around for ages at home and learnt how to cook. I was doing great stuff like making school lunches and vacuuming and washing, just doing normal domestic stuff and then my wife said ‘Buddy, it’s time you f***ing went and did something’.” Part of the ‘something’ that he did was two acoustic shows in May of this year with good friend Scott Russo, frontman of the American punk rock band Unwritten Law. “I rang him, actually when I was doing my cooking and doing my boring domestic stuff, and I said, ‘look, do you want me to manage your tour when you come out here’ and their management, probably wisely, said ‘I think that’s a really bad idea’.
“I’m like ‘okay, fair enough, why don’t we do a show together’.” The two shows were so successful that the they are joining forces again in December for a run of gigs across Australia, which will no doubt please fans of Grinspoon, Unwritten Law and good music. Though he is clearly enjoying the new acoustic gigs Jamieson doesn’t seem to be too keen on an acoustic album just yet. “Oh god no,” he laughed. “I will release something probably by the end of the year; I’ll put out some sort of recorded music. It won’t necessarily be acoustic I don’t think but it will have me singing on it and it will probably be called Phil Jamieson and it will be some sort of product, for want of a better term.” Phil Jamieson will be performing an acoustic gig at the Tattersalls Hotel on Friday, August 1 at 8.30pm. Entry is free. For more information on the show call 4732 6373 or visit www.tattersallshotelpenrith.com.au.

inmalee’s big-voiced diva Anja Nissen from team will.i.am has been named ‘The Voice of Australia 2014’. On Monday evening the Grand Finale saw Australia vote team Ricky’s Jackson Thomas runner-up to Anja, with Johnny Rollins from team Kylie in third place. Team Joel’s Frank Lakoudis and duo ZK from also from team will.i.am rounded out the top five. As the winner of ‘The Voice Australia’, 18-year-old Nissen receives a recording contract with Universal Music, $100,000 prize money and a Ford EcoSport. Anja’s first single, ‘My Girls’, will be released today (Friday, July 25). And she’s already working on a follow-up single produced by her coach, will.i.am. Anja’s first album will be released on Friday, August 1. “I cannot believe that I am the winner of ‘The Voice 2014’. It feels like I have been preparing for this for a long time. I started singing when I was six and always dreamed about my career kicking off, but I never thought it would happen this early, and ‘The Voice’ has given me an outlet to do that,” Anja said. “It’s been the most amazing experience of my life. And getting to work with will.i.am – he has taught me so much and pushed me beyond my boundaries, which I really needed. “Thank you to Australia for voting for me and believing in me. Thank you to my family for always supporting me even when I thought I couldn’t do it. This is what I was born to do.”

f you’re a fan of ‘The Voice’ then this face will look familiar. Local singer Brittanie Shipway wowed the judges with her amazing vocal skills, turning all four chairs during the blind auditions on the hit TV show. Joining the team of Aussie songstress Kylie Minogue, Britannie made it to the battle rounds before being knocked out, but for this talented performer things are just getting started. Brittanie recently supported Damien Leith at a charity event at the Outback Steakhouse in Penrith to raise funds for NordoffRobbins Music Therapy. Audiences will also get a chance to see Brittanie in her new cabaret show in August. “The long term goal is to take the cabaret into Sydney, but for now, I want to share the show with the locals who have supported me since day one, which is why I chose Wallacia Bowling Club as my first venue,” Shipway said. has been asked to perform the show at several other venues around Penrith with details to come. She will also be performing at the Osso Steak and Ribs relaunch. “It’s going to be a spectacular evening, with a brand new featured menu, and of course, great entertainment,” she said. Brittanie Shipway presents Cabaret at the Wallacia Bowling Club on Saturday, August 9 at 6.30pm. Tickets are $15-$20.
Block is back for second time Get ready Blockheads because Channel Nine is bringing back the next series of ‘The Block’ this Sunday, July 27. ‘The Block: Glasshouse’ will premiere at 6.30pm and continue Monday through to Thursday at 7.30pm. Five couples including two from NSW will makeover an abandoned 1980’s office building in Melbourne. This is the second series this year!
We still have to wait a little while but season three of Matt Le Blanc’s comedy ‘Episodes’ will air on Foxtel’s new BBC First channel on Friday, September 12 at 8.30pm. Season one and two, which were absolutely hilarious, previously aired on Channel Nine. ‘Episodes’ sees Le Blanc play himself in a role that won him a Golden Globe a few years ago. The count down is on!
If you love your musical theatre, comedy, opera, theatre and dance, then you’ll love this year’s ‘Helpmann Awards’, which is set to air on Arena on Monday, August 18 at 9.30pm. The awards will feature spectacular live performances.
One for all you [British] food lovers out there… SBS will air Heston’s new seven-part series called ‘Heston’s Great British Food’ this Thursday, July 31 at 8.30pm. In this new series, Heston explores the stories and history behind some of Britain’s favourite foods.
Still on yummy food, and with ‘MasterChef Australia’ wrapping up this Monday, Channel Ten has announced Jamie Oliver’s new series ‘Save with Jamie’ will fill the cooking void from Tuesday, July 29. ‘The Bachelor’ will premiere the following night on Wednesday.
Lastly, ‘Family Feud’ is still continuing to do well for Channel Ten, now that we are two weeks in. Ratings have been solid and the public is enjoying the News alternative. For me, who was a big fan of the franchise before it began, I think it’s very fun and enjoyable.

The Little Wings Flight Program provides free air transport to seriously ill children and their carers who, for geographical or medical reasons are not suited to commercial air, road or rail transport. For example a child may live a long distance from an airport with a commercial air service, or a child’s medical condition or depleted immune system may make it dangerous to travel on public transport, or undertake long distance car travel. Starring: Kit Harrington and Emily Browning Fans of ‘Game of Thrones’ will recognise actor Kit Harrington (aka Jon Snow) in this new DVD release. The story is set in 79A.D and follows Milo (Kit), a gladiator who came from a lowly life as a slave. His love, Cassia, played by Emily Browning, comes from a wealthy background and hence has been betrothed to another, a Roman Senator. When Mount Vesuvius erupts and starts to destroy Pompeii with its fireballs and lava flows, it is up to the brave Milo to fight his way out of the gladiator’s arena and save his lady love. The film also features the star of ‘The Matrix’ trilogy, Carrie-Anne Moss, as Aurelia, the mother of Cassia, along with the star of the hit TV series ‘24’, Kiefer Sutherland, as Milo’s nemesis Senator Corvus. ‘Pompeii’ was directed by Paul W.S Anderson, whose resume includes plenty of action packed films including 2008’s ‘Death Race’ along with 2002’s ‘Resident Evil’ and 2004’s ‘Alien vs Predator’.
Hercules is no stranger to the big and small screens. The role of the son of Zeus has been taken on by many actors and now it’s Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock’s turn in the new release ‘Hercules’. The film is based on ‘Hercules: The Thracian Wars’ a graphic novel by Radical comics. The story follows the powerful Hercules, son of Zeus, who is not a man or a god. He is a tormented soul who has known much suffering including the death of his family. After his loss and 12 arduous labours, Hercules turned his back on the gods, deciding instead to live a life dedicated to battle. Along the way he collected a group of six other tormented souls and together they made money from fighting, living a life of violence. The bloodthirsty group are hired by the King of Thrace to train his army, which gives the group a clear look at just how ruthless they have become. In order to restore justice Hercules must once again fight for the triumph of good over evil, becoming the hero he once was. Starring alongside Dwayne Johnson is John Hurt as Lord Cotys and Ian McShane as Amphiaraus.

It’s been five years since synthpop duo La Roux’s highly successful self titled debut album. It won the pair a Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance album, sold over two million copies and spawned the hit singles ‘Bulletproof’ and ‘In for the Kill’. The years since that release have been a little difficult for La Roux with singer Elly Jackson having anxiety related issues with her voice as well as artistic differences with the other half of the duo, producer Ben Langmaid, which culminated in the pair splitting. Though Langmaid was involved in the early stages of production for ‘Trouble in Paradise’, the album was finished off by Jackson and producer Ian Sherwin. ‘Let Me Down Gently’ was the first taste of the album and is smooth and sexy, while the official first single ‘Uptight Downtown’ is more upbeat and fun. ‘Trouble in Paradise’ is closer to pop than the previous album was and has so far received plenty of critical praise. Looking at the tracklistings – with songs like ‘Kiss and Not Tell’, ‘Sexotheque’ and ‘Cruel Sexuality’ – there is a noticeable theme going on for La Roux. Upon listening to the album you start to realise that the music definitely matches the song titles; this is a sexy pop album.

hearty celebration of food and wine best describes the atmosphere at one of Lakeside Restaurant’s degustation evenings. Already known as one of western Sydney’s finest dining destinations, Lakeside every few months hosts a degustation evening in collaboration with various Australian wineries. Last Friday, diners were delighted with an eight course meal, matched with the quality wines from Petersons in the Hunter Valley. Importantly, you don’t need any prior knowledge of wines – it’s a fantastic learning experience for amateurs and connoisseurs alike. To start with, diners were served heirloom tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, torn basil, Spanish onion, prosciutto crisps and salsa verde, matched with what fast became one of my favourite wines of the evening, the verdelho. A lighter dish, we then tasted herb rolled sashimi of yellow fin tuna, baby radish, wasabi roe, lime segments and coriander. Meanwhile, Lakeside chefs were busy in the kitchen preparing four main meals including a delicious confit duck maryland and pan-fried duck breast, with a side of cauliflower puree, baby spinach and orange infused jus. My personal favourite for the evening was the grilled barramundi, served with kipfler potatoes, trunky creek chorizo,

Lakeside degustation A remarkable dining experience you won’t ever forget! julienne snow peas and burnt butter sauce. The chorizo gave a delightful spice to the dish, which was complemented by the tender barramundi – this dish alone will have me back at Lakeside as a regular diner. There was also chicken thigh filled with

garlic chives, topped with shitake and enoki mushrooms, complemented by a glass of cabernet sauvignon; as well as wagyu beef with beetroot and baby spinach puree, potato rosti and rich pepper berry jus. It was paired with Petersons’ flagship wine, back block shiraz.
Then flowed the dessert wines, with diners treated to a sweet yet nicely balanced botrytis semillon, another personal favourite. It was all to easy to finish the glass, along with its matching dessert; Belgium dark chocolate mousse, mascarpone and almond praline.

hen Spanish winemaker Freixenet decided to look seriously at the Australian market the business quickly invested in the purchase of a mixed fruit farm on Victoria’s Murray River. It wasted no time in using the vineyards there to put out a couple of 2012 sparkling wines under its already internationally-recognised Azahara label. Both were an instant success, and Freixenet has now followed up with a non-fizz Azahara Pinot Grigio and also a Shiraz. Winemaker Dr Phil Spillman is delighted at their reflection of the character of the Victorian property’s orange groves (Azahara in fact is Spanish for orange blossom), together with the avocado and mango plantations that are criss-crossed by the vineyard blocks. “We’re serious about having a good go at making something really special here,” Dr Spillman says. “Wines in a style befitting the Spanish dining and entertaining experience, whilst still staying true to the qualities naturally expressed by the Australian farm.” The 2013 Azahara Pinot Grigio has certainly reflected that aim, with a wonderful palate of crunchy apples, fresh lemon and spiced pears, and a creamy mouth feel. Add some nice acidity and at $15 this makes a marvellous drop with Mediterranean-style salads, and seafoods like salt and pepper squid or barbecued white fish fillets.

ver 4,000 visitors came to celebrate William Cox starting the building of the road across the Blue Mountains 200 years ago, which was one of the most important achievements in our early colonial history. The day started with a function at Regatta Park arranged by Penrith City Council, where Cox’s descendants gathered for the re-enactment parade from the park to the Arms of Australia Inn Museum for the William Cox Historical Festival. At the festival there were speeches from Uncle Graeme Cooper, Mayor Ross Fowler, patron of the Nepean District Historical Society and Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, as well as Robert Bettington on behalf of the Cox descendants. Local historian and songwriter, Jim Low sang a song about the building of the road.

The album features collaborations with fellow Aussie country music star Jasmine Rae on the track ‘Quit This Time’ and ends with a cover of the well known Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs track ‘Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy’. ‘My Side of the Street’ was produced by Craig Porteils who has worked with some big name stars including Billy Idol, Fleetwood Mac, Guns n Roses and Ozzy Osbourne, just to name a few. PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Pliable Pisceans are perplexing at the best of times! Try to communicate clearly mid-week, otherwise confusion and monumental mix-ups are likely. The weekend is wonderful for romantic reveries and declarations of undying love – but don’t get too carried away with extravagant promises, vague dreams and pie-in-the-sky schemes.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Rebellious behaviour will get you into trouble. You’re ambitious for success but think twice before you challenge authority figures, arouse the opposition of colleagues or upset loved ones. Diplomacy is not your natural forte, but it’s exactly what’s needed. Contributing to your local community turns into a win for everyone.
If someone else is managing your money, then make sure you have your finger on the pulse and know exactly what’s going on. Your self-confidence takes a temporary tumble on the weekend, when someone jumps to conclusions and criticises you unfairly. Avoid responding with sharp words or sarcastic comments. Strive to shrug things off with an abundance of Aries aplomb.
Leos are proud people who love to pontificate but, this week, heaps of hubris will land you in hot water. If you are too full of yourself, others will cut you down to size. Try a little humble humility instead! Mercury moves into your sign on Friday, which favours lively conversation but avoid the temptation to monopolise social situations.
Star predictions for the week beginning July 27
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Mercury shifts into your solitude zone from August 1-16 so it’s time to recharge your run-down batteries and reflect on the future. Words of wisdom for the week come from singer/songwriter Kate Bush: “There’s an awful lot you can learn about yourself when you’re alone.” On Sunday, avoid using words as weapons.
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Your delicate diplomatic skills are needed early in the week when you step in and play the peace-maker – but don’t get caught in the cross-fire! The Moon moves through your sign from Friday through to Sunday, which highlights your Libran elegance and timeless style. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great Yves St Laurent: “Fashions fade, style is eternal.”
SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Communicating with others is complicated, as you dig beneath the surface and get to the bottom of old emotional issues. But, if you are jealous or possessive, then you’ll find yourself deep in disagreement with a loved one. Friday is a fabulous day to cement a relationship with a proposal or gesture of commitment.
Early in the week, avoid using power games and emotional manipulation to get what you want. Cool compromise is the smart way to go. With the Sun, Jupiter and Mercury all charging through your career zone, all eyes are on you at work. So make sure you are putting on a good show Scorpio!
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Twins are curious, quicksilver creatures. If you want to achieve your goals this week and impress others then flash-in-the-pan plans are out and patient progress is in. You’re especially nosey on the weekend as you uncover a secret, pass on gossip or study up a storm. But be careful that your motor mouth doesn’t get you into trouble!
Curiosity and optimism are high but don’t skim the surface Sagittarius. There’s more going on than you realise so take the time to investigate properly. Keep your ego in check on the weekend. If you impulsively jump on your high horse, you’ll arouse the opposition of others. Impetuous ideas and spontaneous shenanigans could backfire.
CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Are you trying to get closer to a child or teenager but they keep pushing you away? Patience and persistence are the keys to improving the relationship. Avoid the tantalising temptation to gossip on the weekend. If you pass on information that was given to you in confidence, you’ll end up feeling foolish and friendless.
Venus and Saturn rev up your relationship zone, which usually signals a settled time of heightened romance. But Uranus throws a curved ball into the mix, and a union heads off in an unexpected direction. And it will be hard to balance your desire for commitment with the other person’s need for independence.

Finding inspiration in unexpected places Do all your best ideas come to you in the shower? Inspiration can strike at the most unexpected times. Spending all day in the bath may not be the most effective method for you, but if you’re trying to boost your business finances with some inspired innovation or simply looking for something to get your creative juices flowing, there are a few other ideas you could try. Here are a few unexpected places you could find inspiration: In bed The time that you spend sleeping need not be a waste. Even those of us with limited creativity experience unusual or inventive dreams when our heads hit the pillow. Consider writing your dreams down each morning and considering what your subconscious is trying to tell you. For an added inspirational boost, think about your problems as you fall asleep. You could soon find your dreams contain elements of these issues and provide interesting resolutions. From strangers’ conversations Dealing with the hustle and bustle of life can be a real chore, particularly for the introverts among us. However, rather than plugging in your headphones and blocking out the world, take some time to listen to what the world is saying. Snippets of conversations out of context can offer a huge amount of creative possibilities. Try guessing what the speakers will say next or applying their opinions to your own life. Even as an unsuspecting participant in your problems, strangers can provide a unique outlook on life. We understand how vital creative stimulus can be for individuals and businesses and take pride in offering our readers revelations and incentives.
FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION
PHIL ROBERTS In any industry, you must never stop learning part of everyone’s weekly exercise.
Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
Top three tips for good health? 1. Eat a wide variety of nutritious foods. Dietitians may differ on other topics, but all agree on the need for variety. Enjoyment of food is also very important. I’m not a fan of restrictive diets like intermittent fasting and the Paleo/caveman diet. I just don’t think they are realistic for most people. The evidence supporting them is certainly not rock solid either. 2. Plan some activity every day. If the Prime Minister and Richard Branson can fit it in, so can we. Spend five minutes each night planning the next day. 3. Quality sleep, time with family and friends and keeping the mind active are all incredibly important. Common sense tells us this and the scientists agree.
What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Olympic Weightlifting. It’s quite technical, a great challenge and builds strength, power and flexibility. I also enjoy going for a run to clear the mind and stay fit. How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? Exercise lifts my mood and self-confidence so I miss it if I go without. I had a great role model in my Dad, who was a handy cross country runner and golfer. Training with him, I realised from a young age how great exercise made me feel. These days I look at my wife and two little boys. Staying healthy for them and being a role model is ample motivation.
Biggest health/fitness misconception? In an obese society all forms of exercise are to be encouraged, but strength training is sometimes undervalued. There’s a misconception that it’s about getting muscular, but there are so many other benefits such as maintaining muscle and bone lost with age, strength, power, falls prevention, mood and reduced risk of chronic disease. The most respected fitness organisations worldwide recommend strength training be
Freestyle - anything else you want to say? In any industry, you must never stop learning. I read constantly, study at university, subscribe to scientific journals and am a member of six professional associations. This provides a buffer against being sucked in by the latest diet or exercise fad. To my mind, the other key ingredients for success are interpersonal skills, integrity and hard work. It’s funny how little some care about what they eat. I guess ignorance can be bliss... for a little while. But it’s not that hard to research food these days. I found some interesting research on artificial sweeteners on a site called greenmedinfo.com. If you were told to eat a synthetic chemical whose structure is only a few atoms away from the deadly pesticide DDT, and you knew that not only were there no long term human safety studies performed on it, but that it had been already proven in short term tests to have a lot of adverse health effects, would you still eat it? Millions of people including our children are! Why? To save a few calories! Some people actually believe it’s a healthy choice. Sucralose has nice brand names like Splenda but despite the intended insinuation, sucralose is not a form of sucrose or cane sugar. It’s real name is 1,6-dichloro-1,6-dideoxy-BETA-D-fructofuranosyl-4-chloro-4-deoxy-alpha-D-galactopyranoside. I guess that wouldn’t sell too well though. They make sucralose in a lab, using a complex process involving dozens of chemicals you wouldn’t want to pronounce let alone consume. Basically, the chemists force chlorine into an unnatural chemical bond with a sugar molecule, resulting in a sweeter product, but at a price: a huge amount of artificial chemicals must be added to keep sucralose from hopefully digesting in our bodies. The makers of sucralose say this chemical passes unchanged into the urine and faeces, when in fact, up to 11 per cent to 27 per cent is absorbed into the body (FDA, 1999). In fact, the varying degrees to which sucralose is absorbed is used as a marker for gut and intestinal permeability to determine certain disease states. Once absorbed, between 1.6 per cent to 12.2 per cent of this chlorocarbon accumulates in the body. Sounds to me like it’s not really so sweet after all. I don’t think my family should be eating it, but, as with everything, you choose what to put in your mouth, you make your own mind up.

Worm infestations in dogs and cats
The awesome power of forgiveness
Intestinal worms commonly cause disease in dogs and cats and are often forgotten. These types of worms include roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. Intestinal worms (or parasites) are often ‘silent’ and generally won’t cause disease until there are worms in large numbers. Because of their silent nature, the best approach is to try and prevent large worm burdens before animals become unwell. Puppies are often severely affected by intestinal worms. The most common signs include poor growth, dull hair coat, lack of energy, big tummies and sometimes diarrhoea. In older animals we generally see weight loss, diarrhoea and very vague signs of the animal being unwell. How can we diagnose worms in dogs and cats? Some parasites such as roundworm and tapeworm are large enough to be seen in the animal’s stool, but the majority of parasites are very small and can need a veterinarian to do a test called a ‘faecal float’ to diagnose the worms under a microscope. Can parasites be life threatening? Yes! Hookworms can be very nasty and burrow into the lining of the bowel. This can cause permanent damage to the bowel and in some instances can cause severe blood loss leading to anaemia. It is not uncommon for us to have to give a dog with a severe hookworm infection a blood transfusion. Whipworm infestation can also be life threatening; the exact mechanism is not understood but this parasite can cause alterations in the body’s ability to conserve salt, leading to severe dehydration. It is also important to note that intestinal parasites in dogs and cats can be transmitted to adults and children and these can make people very sick. Fortunately, by using worming medication for your pets frequently and practicing good hygiene by washing hands after playing with your pets, infection with intestinal parasites can generally be avoided. If you are worried that your pet may have worms or just want some general advice about parasite prevention, please contact us on 4731 3055. Next week we will be discussing heartworm.
It was once said, “Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely idea, lovely until they have something to forgive!” Very few of us are born with a natural talent for forgiving. Because people can find it tough to forgive, too often we experience the hurt and pain of broken friendships. Many of us know firsthand how the tensions, even warring feuds, caused by these breakdowns can last a lifetime. Grudges can destroy relationships and tear apart whole families as hatred and anger become entrenched. And when an inability to forgive is combined with a desire to seek revenge or “pay back” life can get out of hand. From the “get square” to the “I’ll get you”, this “payback” mentality can make life very messy. All up it just shows how although forgiveness is important, it is also very hard work! The Bible has a great model of forgiveness for to us follow. It encourages us to forgive with these words, “Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Even though we have not treated God as God, loved Him as we should, thought of Him as we should or followed Him as we should, we are reminded in Jesus’ death on the cross that the Lord’s forgiveness to us has been awesome! It is a powerful, transforming truth that when we turn to God and put our trust in Him he totally forgives us, wiping the slate clean and giving us a start and new life with Him. Yes, forgiveness is hard work but as we remember how much the Lord has forgiven us, God’s amazing kindness towards us encourages us to forgive others, just as the Lord has forgiven us.

Ice cream’s wonderful world of flavours. Photo: Wikimedia In America locals and visitors alike have just licked their way through more ice cream in 24 hours than any other day of the year. But it had nothing to do with the heat and possible mid-summer madness, rather to something a lot higher than that. There was an Official Proclamation in 1984 by the President himself (Ronald Reagan) that the third Sunday of July of every year was to be recognised forever thereafter as American National Ice Cream Day. And loyal subjects have been obeying that command ever since, contributing to the $11billion a year they spend on ice cream, and eating their way through 26
litres per head of the stuff annually. This makes them the world’s biggest consumers of ice cream, with New Zealanders, interestingly, in second place at 23 litres per head per year, and Aussies third with 18 lip-licking litres. And for a bit of trivia, in the late 1800’s after the introduction of the first newfangled “soda fountains”, churches criticised the eating of “sinfully rich sodas” in these places on Sundays. In response, soda fountains stopped serving ice cream with soda and flavouring in voluminous tall glasses, and instead offered just ice cream and flavouring in small bowls on the Sabbath – selling their creations as Ice Cream Sundaes.

Unique gemstones of the world Inspired by last week’s article about high priced luxury gems I thought we’d take a look at some of the most unique gemstones in the world. There’s always talk about diamonds of a royal calibre, but what about the unique gems? Personally I was obsessed with the Beryl family for a while, followed by Tourmalines and the runner up would have to be the Garnet family. One of the largest Tourmalines in the world is the ‘Ethereal Carolina Divine Paraiba’ Tourmaline, which is a huge 191.87cts. The Paraiba Tourmaline typically comes from Brazil and is unique due to its rarity. It exhibits a bright blue, green colour, unlike any other gemstone in the world. Another noteworthy Tourmaline is ‘The Crimson Star’ Rubellite. This deep red beauty is a 121carat rounded cushion cut and is the largest gem quality stone of this nature known to be in existence. The name ‘Rubellite’ is given due to the colour. A winning competition piece that I hand crafted a little while back housed a stunning marquise shaped rubellite. It really made the piece come alive! Something really different is the ‘Star of Asia’. This is a Burmese 330ct cabochon cut star sapphire, famous for it’s rich colour and picture perfect six-pronged star-like phenomenon shown on the rounded top face of the gem. This unique detail comes from the structure of the gem under the surface and it tends to follow the eye when you move the stone around in view. The ‘American Golden Topaz’ is a 172-faceted topaz weighing in at 22,892.5 carats (over 4.5kgs!). This is said to be the largest cut and polished yellow topaz in the world, along with being one of the largest cut gemstones in the world. Wouldn’t you like to find that one whilst out fossicking! On another note, we are offering fantastic interest free terms at York Jewellers for the next month! We have partnered with GE Money to offer you 500 days interest free on any purchase over the value of $500. Some conditions do apply, check our website for more details: www.yorkjewellers.com.au.
– but in saying that, if I were to stumble across a really good deal, I probably wouldn’t walk away just because of the type of store. And while I say I am less trusting of some retailers now, part of me feels for those market stall owners who do sell legitimate products at good prices – it is such a shame that a few have to ruin it for the rest of them.

proven to be counterfeit. These products are of poor quality and their ingredients of dubious origin,” Mr Mason-Cox said. “The cosmetic industry is a billion dollar market and our concern is that consumers can be misled into paying top dollar for fake and inferior products.” Well sir, it is my – and the rest of the cosmeticbuying world’s – concern as well, especially if my health and my skin is on the line. Investigations into counterfeit cosmetic goods are continuing and have never been a non-issue for Fair Trading, which as an organisation has been battling counterfeit cosmetics and clothing for... well, forever! But not without results. “In May this year, Fair Trading successfully prosecuted Michael Lam, a Paddy’s Markets trader, for selling counterfeit football clothing. He was ordered to pay fines and costs of $17,180 by Parramatta Local Court,” Mr Mason-Cox said. “While consumers are urged to scrutinise the labelling on a product, it is not always easy to spot a fake.” If it isn’t easy, then how can we be expected to know the difference when we are out shopping? Surely not all cosmetics on sale are fakes? Though you can never be sure, the best way to avoid a fake is by shopping at a “well-recognised and established trader”, according to Fair Trading. Even though I haven’t had a run-in with fake cosmetics like these poor people, I feel less inclined to trust retailers after hearing this. I always shop for my cosmetics at what I am positive are legitimate businesses – I am not one to go looking for my foundation at a market stall

If purchasing makeup isn’t stressful enough, with all the different brands, colours and variations in products, why not throw in the consideration that what you’re buying may not be what you think it is and could putting you and your skin in danger. This was realised by a number of people who recently bought cosmetics from retailers in Sydney and western Sydney that were in fact counterfeit products of real brands, including counterfeit MAC cosmetics. NSW Fair Trading has since seized over 8,000 counterfeit products during raids, but even they are sure to admit that there is probably more out there. “The raids followed a Fair Trading investigation into consumer complaints about products they had purchased from a Sydney retailer,” said NSW Fair Trading Minister Matthew Mason-Cox. “Alarmingly, one complainant reported experiencing burns to her face after using the counterfeit products. Others reported that it was not until the product packaging had been opened that it became obvious they had purchased a fake due to a different colour and consistency to the genuine article.” Burns? Yep, you read that right, burns. Can you imagine coming home from a store, so thrilled to have picked up some MAC for a bargain, only to discover that when you actually use it, it causes painful burn-like blisters? I actually can’t think of anything worse. MAC and its trademark investigators assisted Fair Trading in taking down the stores selling counterfeit goods. “The goods have been tested and they are

National strategy required to tackle stroke incidence

Report shows over 2,000 locals are living with the consequences of stroke KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_
ith 161 people having already suffered a stroke in the local area this year and tens of thousands at high risk, now is the time to take preventative measures, according to the Stroke Foundation of Australia. 2,422 people living in the federal electorate of Lindsay have had and are living with the consequences of stroke, according to a Stroke Foundation study, which found that there is no postcode unaffected by the condition. “Stroke kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer. This devastating disease also places significant demands on health services, families and the community across the country,” said NSW National
W
There are over 25,000 people in Lindsay with high blood pressure Stroke Foundation Executive Officer Greg Cantwell. “The Stroke Foundation is urging national action to tackle stroke because all Australians need and deserve access to quality stroke care.” Conditions like high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, high cholesterol
and physical inactivity are all stroke risk factors and with large amounts of people in Penrith suffering from these conditions, the Stroke Foundation is concerned. 25,662 people in Lindsay have high blood pressure, 70,432 are inactive and over 40,000 have high cholesterol. The Stroke Foundation is not only call-
ing on local people to protect themselves from stroke by lowering their risk, it is also calling on the governments to support them. “Australia does not have a nationally funded strategy or the care services to address widespread need,” Mr Cantwell said.
