He’s Bloody fantastic KATE REID @kate_reid6

A

ussie funnyman Kevin ‘Bloody’ Wilson didn’t realise he was a comedian until he read it in the paper. “When I moved down from Kalgoorlie to Perth I used to host a lot of what they’d called ‘lingerie shows’ in the pubs, they were really popular lunch time lingerie shows, so blokes would take their lunch off to the pub, have a few beers and perve on some sheilas, that was basically what it was about,” he said. “I was including straight songs and funny songs as well and then I saw it

in the paper advertised, ‘compered by comedian Kevin Bloody Wilson’, I thought hello, it’s official,” he laughed. Kevin Bloody Wilson is much loved the world over for his very Aussie sense of humour. Though he’s never really received mainstream media support, Kevin has managed to sell almost four million albums globally with all of his CDs and DVDs achieving gold status along the way. His music has also had the honour of being included in the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra. With a back catalogue that includes songs like ‘Rootin’ In The Back Of The Ute’ and ‘I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Be A Mole)’ it’s clear that Kevin’s cult following has come from the fact that he isn’t afraid to delve into the crude and sexually explicit side of things.

“Everybody seems to be doing farewell tours, so I thought why not!”

“When you consider what you hear on the radio, probably about 98 per cent of those songs would be about love of some description, unrequited love or wanting to find love or wanting somebody to fall in love with you or whatever,” he said. “Well I write stuff about the other two per cent that they don’t mention. “Songs like ‘Do You F**k on First Dates’, stuff that really matters.” Much of Kevin’s material comes from observing the absurdity of everyday life, which includes taking the mickey out of people he’s met along the way. “‘Mick Me Mate The Master Farter’, I went to school with him,” he said. “It was just a funny scenario about a kid that I grew up with, one of my mates, and he could fart ‘God Save The Queen’ for christ sakes. It’s a pretty unique talent and so he needed to be remembered at least in song, so that’s what I did.” Audiences will have the chance to experience all their favourite bawdy ballads, including tracks from Kevin’s most recent album, 2013’s ‘Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!’, when the larrikin comedian heads to the Evan Theatre on Thursday, March 12 for his show, ‘The First Of The Final Farewell Tours – Perhaps’. Fans who might be a little concerned about the farewell part of the title needn’t worry, as always it’s just Kev being Kev. “Well everybody seems to be doing farewell tours so I thought why not,” he said. “This is the first of the final farewell tours perhaps and maybe there’ll be a second and a third. So if I can ring this out for about five years I’m going to start doing the comeback tours then. “I’m going to outdo Farnham, John Farnham!” With hundreds of songs under his belt and a back catalogue that crosses over many decades it’s hard to fit everyone’s favourite into each show but there are a few songs that always make the cut. “I know that there’s a core of about six songs that are the backbone of the show, songs that are most requested like ‘D.I.L.L.G.A.F’, ‘Living Next Door To Alan’ and songs like that,” Kevin said. “So I’ll always include those as part of the show but the rest of it I have no idea, no idea. “It’s sort of, dare I say, organic, without sounding like a dickhead. “The biggest problem I have is what to leave out of the show as opposed to what to leave in the show.” When asked about the process of writing his songs and whether there’s anything you can’t joke about, Kevin gets slightly serious, though it doesn’t last long. “It’s basically like painting a picture, you have to fill it full of colour, vivid colour, and that’s what I do. I just use word colours if you like,” he said. “That’s pretty heavy isn’t it, f**k, I’m a comedian for christ sake, that’s some real heavy s**t, Kev, back off.” If you don’t mind being just that little bit offended, then Kevin Bloody Wilson’s show at Penrith next month is for you. In today’s politically correct world, Kevin Bloody Wilson may just be what we all need. We’d suggest you find your kids a babysitter, though. Kevin Bloody Wilson will be performing at Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers on Thursday, March 12 and will be supported by his daughter Jenny Talia. Tickets are $58.60. Kingsman: The Secret Service Rated MA // TROY DODDS

Film promoters and publicists often use the term “it’s got something for everyone”, but the over-used PR line might just be correct when it comes to ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’. The James Bond-style spy flick is funny, has plenty of action and lots of thrills and spills – though it does lack a love story. The movie starts in explosive fashion, with secret agent Harry Hart unable to prevent the death of one of his fellow agents. Feeling guilty, he delivers a bravery medal to the man’s widow and young son, Eggsy. 17 years later, Eggsy is living with his mother and violent stepfather and is very much lost in the world. You guessed it – it’s time for Eggsy to follow in his father’s footsteps.

CINEMA

What follows is Eggsy (played by Taron Egerton) being put through his paces at ‘spy school’, experiencing an array of life-threatening challenges that test his wit, will to live and ability to think on the spot. With Harry Hart (Colin Firth) watching over him, what could go wrong? Plenty, it seems, with the top secret spy organisation forced to try to stop a plot by billionaire Richmond Valentine (Samuel L Jackson) to all but take over the world. ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ is a brilliant movie – funny in the right places, believable when it needs to be and full of twists and turns.

50 Shades of Grey

Rated MA // AMELIA PARROTT In case you’ve been living under a rock and somehow missed the cultural phenomenon that is ‘50 Shades of Grey’, here’s what’s what. Virginal English literature student Anastasia Steele meets hot billionaire businessman Christian Grey when she’s roped into interviewing him for her college newspaper. Grey takes an interest in Steele and essentially begins stalking her before introducing her to his world of whips, chains and handcuffs. The film dances around the pair’s burgeoning romantic relationship and sexual escapades while Anastasia decides whether she’s going to sign up to be Grey’s subservient. There’s plenty of boobs, bums and BDSM but a lot of the fat has been toned down or cut out entirely for the screen. ‘50 Shades ’ is ‘Twilight’ for adults. It’s terribly trashy and awful to the point of being enjoyable and occasionally unintentionally hilarious.

While Nando’s has been a staple on the Penrith dining scene for many years, the restaurant has just undergone a refurbishment, leaving the store with a whole new look. The recent face lift has created a brighter, lighter and more open space, with the updated interior providing the perfect spot for a casual dining experience with family and friends. While the decor may have changed the food hasn’t, it’s just as delicious and flavoursome as ever. There’s the succulent Portugese flame-

grilled chicken which works perfectly with Nando’s famous PERi-PERi sauce. Meals can be customised with sauces in a range of different heat levels, whether you like things mild or mouthwateringly hot. Another standout on the menu is the Espetada, an impressive hanging skewer of chicken, capsicum and onion. Not only is it delicious but it also creates a fun table centrepiece. Other menu choices include the tasty paella, salads and a range of options for those who love a good chicken burger. Nando’s has long been a favourite amongst Penrith diners but now with its updated look there’s even more reason to head out for dinner at this Afro-Portuguese restaurant. The great thing about Nando’s has always been its flexibility in being a takeaway restaurant, but also providing quality dine-in options. Nando’s doesn’t feel overly fancy, but doesn’t feel like a tacky cheap takeaway joint either. The new store builds on traditions and exceeds expectations.

B

outique Pierrepoint Wines in Victoria’s cool-climate Henty Region has released a seafood-matching 2013 Pinot Gris at a nicely-priced $20 a bottle at cellar door, even more nicely so at $15 by the dozen – and better still with free delivery anywhere in Australia if you order two dozen online. Established in 1998 by Andrew and Jennifer Lacey in an area where late-ripening grapes develop wonderfully intense varietal flavours, this Nick’s Pick label is typically Henty-fresh with up-front and concentrated Pinot Gris pear and apple overtones. Fruit from carefully managed low-yielding vines was picked over three separate harvests – the first during the last week of February and the two later, and thus riper, in the second week of March, with the wine made by contract maker Scott Ireland. This is one that will reward beautifully with shellfish and salads, baked salmon, or if you are not much into seafoods, with pan-fried pork chops or creamy pasta dishes. Watch this one: Spain’s Freixenet is easily the world’s biggest producer of Methode Champenoise sparkling wines – Cavas as they are known in their home country. Dubbed by aficionados “Black Bottle Bubbly” because of its distinctive black bottle, it’s crisp, clean and dry and with a lower acidity than most sparkling wines for a softer, smoother finish.

Penrith Panthers Saturday, February 14

Love was in the air! On Saturday, February 14 local couples celebrated Valentine’s Day by heading to Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers for the beautiful and glamorous La Romantique show. The dazzling performance kept audiences entertained with cabaret and circus talent. It was a colourful and spectacular show that included comedy, dance and song. For couples it was the perfect opportunity to get dressed up and celebrate love, through the romance and beauty of the world of burlesque. Valentine’s Day is embraced by some, and criticised by others, but there’s no doubt that love was in the air last weekend at venues right across Penrith. We certainly hope all the lovers out there had a very special Valentine’s Day this year.

Win tickets to The McClymonts

T

he McClymonts will be back in Penrith to perform at the Evan Theatre on Friday, March 6 in support of their current single ‘Forever Begins Tonight’. The country music trio, which consists of sisters Brooke, Sam and Mollie, wrote the beautiful ballad as a wedding song for Sam, who wed last November. The song seems to have become a hit with Aussie brides of late as well. “We’ve been contacted by a few fans recently telling us that they are using it for their first wedding dance,” said Mollie of the track. “It feels great to have a song that is so personal to us be connecting with other people.” Along with the single, audiences will get a chance to hear tracks from The McClymonts’ fourth album, ‘Here’s To You & I’ which made it into the Top 10 on the ARIA Album charts and reached top spot on the ARIA Country Album chart. Along with ‘Forever Begins Tonight’ the album has spawned the singles ‘Going Under (Didn’t Have To)’ along with title track ‘Here’s To You & I’. Don’t miss seeing The McClymonts live in Penrith. We have two double passes to The McClymonts at the Evan Theatre to give away. For your chance to win one, email the code word ‘McClymonts’ to competitions@ westernweekender.com.au with your name and contact details. Entries close Wednesday, February 25. Authorised under NSW Permit Number LTPM/15/00066. Terms and conditions at www.westernweekender.com.au or Weekender reception.

Play to make its Australian debut This month The Acting Factory will be performing ‘Mucedorus’, a play which has never been performed in Australia. The play, which is often cited as the work of Shakespeare though there is some controversy over the actual author, takes a look at comedy and tragedy, suggesting that the two may be more alike than they first appear. It features a mix of comedy, slapstick, violence and death. Mucedorus will be on at Mamre House until Sunday, February 22 and Regatta Park from Saturday, March 7 to Sunday, March 22. Tickets are $20. How much does one

cage egg really cost?

You wouldn’t keep your pet like this. But hidden away in sheds across Australia, hens who are just as smart and sensitive as the family pet spend every waking moment in a cage — all for the sake of a cheap egg. She cannot sit comfortably or stretch her wings. Without the ability to exercise, her body is weak. Chances are that she, or one of her cage mates, is living

with an untreated broken bone. But trapped in a cage, in a shed with thousands of cages, no-one is ever likely to notice. Here she will spend 30 long hours to produce just one cage egg. The first time she will see the outside world — the world she was meant to live in — will be on the last day of her life, as she is trucked to the slaughterhouse.

he annual 111th Luddenham Show, to be held on February 21 and 22, is set to be one of the biggest yet in its proud history. Known as “the country show, Luddenham is a unique show being so close to Sydney, however, still retaining a true sense of yesteryear. Set in picturesque surrounds overlooking paddocks toward the Blue Mountains, you would not realise that you were only 10 minutes from the centre of Penrith. Historic pavilions, bar and kitchens add to the old world atmosphere. As a further point of interest Luddenham is one of three showgrounds in the state still owned by the community and not by a government body. As a result the annual show is the hard working volunteer committee’s main fundraiser for the upkeep of the grounds and running of future shows. After three wet years all signs point towards an outstanding event with all the show favourites back once again along with some exciting new additions headlined by a Daihatsu car. Now a little old hatchback may not seem all that exciting, but this is no ordinary car. It is actually powered by a jet engine. It has featured on ‘Top Gear Australia’ and toured such places as the Bundaberg Air Show, Summernats and Brisbane. This, however, will be the first time that it has been seen at a local show and will light up the main

favourites are there with two full days of horse classes, along with cattle and poultry judging, as well as the ever popular sheepdog trials and all the fun of sideshow alley. For those after a little more bang and excitement in the judging ring there will be a bull ride, steer and poddy ride as well as wild cow tagging. Not to be outdone are the antique sulky race and horse sporting events. Everyone’s favourite at many shows is the wood chopping and Luddenham will host many of the sport’s biggest names as they work their way to glory at the Royal Easter Show. One of the always popular events is the dog high jump and calcutta. If you think your pooch at home can leap you are invited to bring it along and pit its skills against the other local dogs. An event that will prick the interest of the strong men and women is the yank-a-ute challenge which sees groups of five people haul a ute in the fastest time to take home the huge prize purse. Maybe you are more of an arty person? Well this is your opportunity to actually compare yourself with a variety of classes taking place from photography, cooking, flowers and leather work to painting, preserves and even a home brewing section. For all pavilion classes entry is free and can you imagine your bragging rights with a blue ribbon for champion home brew or best plate of scones? Over many years Luddenham has

Returning this year we have the Showmow team, who will be racing in their hotted up sit on lawn mowers, making its debut this year they even have a drag racing mower. For all those wives out there, hubby may even be pleased to mow the lawn with one of these little beauties. If the smell of burning rubber and the roar of a big donk ain’t your scene, don’t worry there is plenty for you to see and do also. As everyone is aware, 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, and a tribute to the 18th Battalion and Light Horse Regiments will take pride of place to pay tribute to both those brave men and their mounts. The 18th was raised locally for service in the Great War and the bloody battles of France. Names that still stir Australian hearts, such as Pozières, Mont St. Quentin and Hill 60, are where the 18th wrote their name bold in Aussie minds. Along with the Light Horse Regiment the 18th Btn A.I.F. Living History Group Australia will be there in period costume to mount displays and interact with crowds. As a further remembrance the Luddenham A.H & I society will be unveiling a plaque to honour the local men who fought and died for Australia. Of course, all the normal show

The regiment’s links to the showground are further strengthened by the fact the grounds served as a camp and base for the men and their horses. A huge privilege was bestowed upon these men when they led the parade along the Great Western Highway to celebrate its centenary in 1914. To further add to the ceremonial occasion, an actual Light Horse Regiment will form a mounted guard of honour along with members of the 18th battalion WWI group. The 18th Battalion was a regiment raised from the Liverpool area and saw service at Gallipoli. During the famous August offensive, after fighting at Damakjelik Bair, only 386 men could answer their names after starting with 1000 soldiers. After being transferred to the western front in France and Belgium they saw action at Pozieres and Villers-Bretonneux. Whilst attacking the Germans at the Hindenburg line on October 3, 1918, Lieutenant Joseph Maxwell was awarded the battalion’s only Victoria Cross. During the Great War the 18th counted 3513 casualties and 1060 deaths. Current members of the history group recreate the contingent as it would have been between the years of 1916-18. Both the Light Horse and 18th Battalion will have sites on Saturday, February 21 that include historically accurate recreations including horse drawn vehicles and motor vehicles.

Luddenham Show to pay tribute to the ANZACs and area’s own special role t dawn on April 25, 1915, Australian troops stormed ashore at a place called Gallipoli and into the collective minds of every generation of Australians to come. That was the event that many now see as the birth of our nation and now, 100 years later in 2015, the Luddenham Show Society will pause to remember these brave men and salute the role that the very grounds where the show is still held played in Luddenham’s own contribution to World War I.

At the official opening of the show a monument will be unveiled depicting an image of the Luddenham Light Horse Squadron. The moving photograph, taken in 1915 on the showground, shows 25 men in uniform before some of them left to fight for the empire, some paying the ultimate price. Federal MP Fiona Scott and Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler will be on hand to unveil the tribute. It will be especially moving for these two locals as Mr Fowler’s uncle

who died in Egypt and Ms Scott’s great grandfather are amongst the men depicted. In a further example of the past’s connection with the present day, many of the current show committee’s ancestors are also represented. These include life member and president Wayne Wilmington’s grandfather and vice president and announcer Darren Adams’ great-great uncle. Other names include Jim Roots, father of life member and vice president Rocky.

Does the cut of a diamond matter? The short answer to this is ‘yes’. The cut of a diamond can make or break it when it comes to sparkle, scintillation and performance. Cut doesn’t refer to the shape of a diamond (round, oval, pear shape) it refers to the proportions, polish and symmetry of the stone. A well-cut diamond will always out perform a poorly cut stone, regardless of the colour, clarity and size. Think of the cut of your diamond as the key to its sparkle. The cut is so influ-

ential in the look of the stone that even a diamond of the highest colour and clarity can look flat and lifeless if it isn’t cut properly. On another note, correct faceting on a well-cut stone can often enhance the look of a lower grade diamond. Diamond cutters certainly have their work cut out for them. Each facet on a diamond must be cut at the correct angle, polished perfectly and

the diamond must be in proportion in regards to depth to prevent the loss of sparkle and light through the stone. A round brilliant cut diamond is renowned for being the most precisely cut of all the different diamond shapes. The faceting and proportions of a round diamond have been perfected mathematically and most of the shapes currently available are an adaptation of this faceting to some degree. You have probably heard the term ‘excellent cut’ or ‘triple excellent’ before? These are terms made familiar by diamond grading laboratories such as GIA and refer to the cut, polish and symmetry grading of a diamond. Keep in mind that although a diamond is graded as an excellent cut, sometimes they may be passed through after only meeting minimum. At York Jewellers we are a proud stockist of Passion 8. These diamonds are cut by experts using selected rough and are known as ‘the most perfectly cut diamond in the world’. Tell tale sign of a well cut stone is if it exhibits ‘hearts and arrows’ through a viewing scope – a characteristic that all Passion8 diamonds have. See you next week!

Wearing a jacket with a hood is a great safety-blanket when the sky is threatening rain because when those first drops fall, the hood can go up and your head is kept dry. Hooded jackets are not the most fashionable things, though you can snag some pretty cool ones, but they sure do the job. I am a big fan of a detachable hood, which can be taken on and off as you please. If you are not keen on hoods, try to find a coat with a wide collar because these come in handy when a downpour surprises you. Women with long hair can tuck their

hair down the back of the coat before ‘popping’ the collar to keep the back of the neck dry. Leather jackets are a sure-fire way to keep your body dry underneath and there are a range of jackets made from waterproof fabrics that are still fashionable. My biggest concern on rainy days are my shoes, because I know from experience how easy it is for them to get ruined as a result of water damage. If rain is expected, throw on a pair of boots or leather shoes that have been treated with a water-resistant product. I also always keep a pair of gumboots in my car as well, just in case I have to wade through puddles.

am sick to death of this unpredictable weather; we’ve got scorching hot days, followed by cool rainy ones and my fashion sense is suffering because of it! I really hate it when, after a wonderful warm weekend, I head out of the house without my umbrella, to find that that decision was a massive mistake. On one recent occasion, in the space of time between getting out of my car and walking through the office door, my hair was drenched, my white and blue striped top had very obvious rain spots on it and my suede shoes were ruined. I had to step out of the office on two other occasions that day to head out to meetings and by then, the rain was even heavier. All day long I was continually getting comments about how I looked like I had been swimming and I even had someone offer to let me have their umbrella. With autumn quickly approaching, the weather is expected to continue being unpredictable so I think it is timely for us to discuss how we can gracefully deal with a sudden downpour. First things first, getting your hands on a trusty umbrella is a must. There is a lot to be said for the smaller kind that can slip into your handbag or briefcase but they are only really effective at keeping your head dry, so I like the idea of a big umbrella that you can carry around with you. When you wake up in the morning and the sky is looking ominous, it is a really good idea to head to work or out for the day well prepared. When choosing an outfit, opt for darker colours like black or navy blue, which are less likely to show raindrops.

24 to support my health. Then slowly I started implementing changes – diet and exercise, and everything in between. For me this is a way of life that is pretty much non-negotiable, especially with a young family to look after. I also see fitness not just as a physical thing, but also embracing mental and spiritual health as well. My routine is always changing, and there are always new goals to work towards.

FITEC fitness champion

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Diet – I believe that you need to supply your body with high quality fuel for it to function at its best. 2. Just do it – stop making excuses. The hardest thing to do is take the first step. So get on your gear and walk out the door, you’re half way there. 3. Find something you enjoy doing, with people you enjoy doing it with, in a place you like to go. For me this is most definitely dragon boating with the Pendragons at the fabulous Regatta Centre.

Sharon Cooper

Nobody is ‘better’ than you

How does fitness feature in your life? I was never what you would call super active. I did yoga once a week, and maybe managed a walk or a swim as well. Then five years ago my life was turned upside down when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39. After completing my treatment, I really searched to see what lifestyle choices I could make

I used to struggle ... but now school work’s FUN!

A daily ‘must do’? I find there are a few things that I do to support me on a daily basis – meditation and juicing. Meditation really helps to centre you and helps get your mind in the right space, and juicing because it tastes great, and gives you a shot of pure vitality. Biggest health/fitness misconception? That other people are better than you. Don’t fall into the trap of comparing yourself with anyone else. Just focus on what you want to achieve for you.

Most tuition centres are franchises. The Tuition Place is independent and local. This gives you three important advantages: 1. Teaching methods and resources are tailored for the children of the Penrith area, not dictated by a franchisor from far away. 2. If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly.

Everyone is just doing the best they can, and mostly are delighted that you are too. And remember everyone started somewhere. No one can do it for you. It does take a certain amount of discipline, but the results are so worth it. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? Taking a holistic approach to my health I see benefits in all areas of my life. Mentally it helps to keep things in perspective. I find it is not possible to hold onto the stress of a bad day at work after you have been out paddling in a boat for an hour on a beautiful afternoon. Physically it is such a great feeling to feel strong and capable. It is taking control back of your life, especially after experiencing something like cancer, and the resulting challenges that brings, both physically and emotionally. From a purely practical perspective, you need to exercise after surgery to gain back your range of movement and build up your muscles again. Everything else is a bonus! What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? That’s an easy one. I joined the Pendragons Dragon Boat Club three years ago. I initially only paddled with Dragons Abreast Penrith – the breast cancer support crew. However, as my fitness increased, I started to paddle with the sports crew and race in regattas. The fact that it is a team sport is enormously satisfying, and it is great fun. I have also just started pole dancing. It’s such a fun ‘girly’ thing to do and works your muscles.

If you can’t remember why you should be lifting your weights, then you should definitely be lifting weights! It’s better than brain training exercises for keeping dementia at bay, a study suggests. University of Sydney researchers have found high intensity weight training improves the mental abilities of older people with mild cognitive impairment, a common precursor to dementia. Professor Maria Fiatarone Singh, a geriatrician, said resistance training may

significantly reduce the risk of dementia. “We know weight training stimulates hormones that make muscles grow and it’s possible these hormones are also having similar benefits for brain function,” she said. Researchers divided 100 adults aged over 60 years with mild cognitive impairment into three groups. For

six months, the first group did weight training, while another did computer-based brain training, and a third undertook a combination of both. The weight training group showed significant improvements on the Alzheimer’s disease assessment scale, Prof Fiatarone Singh said. “They improved their overall cognitive function, in particular their abilities related to planning, organising and devising strategies and visual memory,” she said. These improvements were still present 12 months after the supervised training stopped. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a disease that is projected to affect 135 million people globally by 2050. So whatever your age there are many benefits to weight training and exercise. Get a friend or group together and get some exercise in. While you workout chatting with friends is also a big ‘pick up’ to the brain, having a face-to-face talk with someone puts demands on the brain that a text or Facebook conversation doesn’t. And remember to keep it enjoyable, laughter really is the best medicine. A bit of humour puts all sorts of good chemicals out and into the body.

When it comes to your daily routine, avoid making hasty moves. You know which tasks need to be done, and Saturn will help you knuckle down and complete them with gusto and grace. So bite the bullet and get on with things. If you are facing obstacles at work, then throw out your old ideas and try a different strategy.

As we rapidly approach the end of February I’ve had quite a few conversations with people about how quickly this year is flying by and how New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside as life gets busy. Before much more of the year zips by, now is a better time than ever to reflect on your goals, financial or otherwise, and check how you’re tracking against them. Even better is to make tracking your goals a monthly activity to ensure you’re staying on course to make 2015 a great year.

It’s not too late to set your 2015 goals

owner and manager Bank of Queensland anthony.walker@ boq.com.au

As we all know with our finances, it’s not what you do once in a while but consistency that plays a part in achieving your financial goals. People don’t generally wake up one day and find themselves in a good financial position, unless of course there’s a big Lotto win involved! It’s more likely to be the

dedication and the everyday actions towards the end result that moves people from where they are now to where they want to be. And, just in case you didn’t make any financial resolutions this year, I’ve made some for you; it’s never too late to make a change for the better! Resolution 1: I will make a budget, and I will stick to it Resolution 2: I will manage my credit card; it will not manage me Resolution 3: I will reduce the fees I incur Resolution 4: I will set up a savings account And, if you need help from your Bank Manager to set your financial goals for the year, make a time to visit them to discuss your needs.

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Jupiter is revving your fiery engine but taking short cuts will get you nowhere fast. The Sun/Saturn square really cramps your style and lowers your energy levels, as you encounter obstructions and delays. Whatever happens, you’ll need plenty of patience. Much of your time will be consumed by a difficult situation.

SAGITTARIUS

You tend to go to extremes, so there’s nothing more depressing than a downin-the-dumps Sagittarian! We all know Saturn’s moving slowly through your sign and you’ve got a plethora of problems, but don’t waste your time (and everyone else’s) with endless complaining and ‘woe-is-me’ behaviour.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

The Sun/Saturn square could send you into a controlled frenzy of micromanaging this week, as you strive to do everything perfectly, on budget and on time. Virgo, why do you put yourself under such pressure? The one area of your life that’s begging for some serious re-building is your home and family.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Attached Librans, are you ready to really commit? This week’s Venus/Saturn trine is super for cementing a long-term union, and making it more secure. Singles, romance is in the air but don’t be dazzled by appearances! Have the wisdom to pick a partner who has less surface gloss and more inner substance.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Don’t let other people undermine your self-confidence … and don’t indulge in some Scorpio self-sabotage! Remember, with strong self-esteem you can climb any mountain, weather any storm and sail any stormy sea. Saturn’s in your money zone, so look for ways to consolidate your finances.

25

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

The stars favour beautifying or renovating your home environment, and some Capricorns will move house. But are you brooding on the past … and kicking yourself for romantic or career opportunities you’ve missed along the way? It’s time to learn from your mistakes, and move on.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

The buzz word is communication. Your curiosity is piqued, and you’re keen to converse with a wide range of people. The more time and effort you put into building your social media profile, the more it will benefit you further down the track. Think long-term strategies, rather than short-term fixes.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

This is definitely not the week to waft around in a perpetual Piscean daze! It’s time for a reality check. Saturn squares the Sun, so strive to get your act together in an uncharacteristically organised and focused way. If you don’t, then expect others to voice their disappointment and disapproval.

McMillan PET HEALTH

Myxomatosis is a fatal poxvirus that is spread between rabbits by close contact and by biting insects such as fleas and mosquitoes. This virus was introduced into Australia in 1950 to control Australia’s problem with an overpopulation of wild rabbits. Unfortunately, pet bunnies are also susceptible to this fatal virus. What are the symptoms? The initial signs are similar to that of conjunctivitis. The eyes, mouth and nose become red and swollen. This swelling then progresses to the genitalia. Affected bunnies also develop extreme lethargy, fever

you can help to prevent myxomatosis in your pet. The ultimate aim is to control external parasites such as mosquitoes, fleas and mites and also minimise contact with wild rabbits. Having rabbit hutches indoors is the safest thing that you can do. Outdoor hutches should be covered in insect proof netting, especially during dusk and dawn when insects are most active. If a rabbit is suspected of having this virus, it must be isolated from other rabbits immediately to prevent direct transmission of the virus. We also recommend the use of topical flea products in rabbits such as Revolution. These products can help protect against fleas and mites which are some of the vectors that can transmit myxomatosis. and lose their appetite. Can it be treated? Unfortunately, it is reported that this virus is fatal in approximately 99.8 per cent of infected rabbits. Currently, there are no vaccinations available in Australia against myxomatosis and you need to actively prevent against infection. There are several ways that

Valentine’s Day has come and gone and while some people might write off the day as commercial overkill, an opportunity to squeeze more money out of people, it is great to know that we are deeply loved. It is great to know and understand that someone appreciates us and thinks us special. To be loved makes us feel valued and significant. To be loved gives us hope, even when life itself might seem to be at its darkest moment. To be loved even helps us overcome our disappointments, our fail-

ures – those times when we know that we have not lived the way we should. If the love of another person can do those things, how much more the love of God who made us! The Bible’s book of John contains perhaps one of the most important verses in the whole Bible and this one verse tells us much about the love of God. “For God so loved the world that he gave

his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Here in these few words is an awesome life changing truth. God, the creator of all things, loved people so much that he sent his unique, precious, one and only Son, to come into our world and die for us, so that if we turn to him in trust and faith, we will not perish but we will have life that goes on for all eternity! Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but it is never too late time to consider and respond to the awesome love God has shown us in Jesus – this true love that changes everything! Have a fantastic weekend. See you next week!

In his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of the traveller, David Ellis says that while many a conversation may turn to our wondrously time-saving – and coincidentally revenue raising – toll roads, there’s nothing quite new about them in Australia. For soon after arriving in Sydney Town back in 1810, Governor Lachlan Macquarie was charging folk to use major roads, bridges and ferries, and within 50 years some 34 toll gates were in operation across the colony. Around a third were on the Great Southern Road from Sydney to the village of Bowral in the NSW Southern

Highlands, and from there onwards to Goulburn and ultimately Albury on the Murray River. Charges were based on the type of animals being herded on roads, bridges or ferries, starting from a penny per head per toll sector for sheep and pigs, to two pence per horse or mule. Farm vehicles were charged by their number of wheels and horses pulling them, and stage-coaches up to one shilling and sixpence per sector – a pricey way to get to Goulburn which could take up to 30 hours and a near-dozen toll gates. After years of public protests, Macquarie’s toll roads were eventually abandoned in 1877.
