SPECIAL REPORT

Reverting back to the ways of the cavemen There’s been plenty of speculation about the newest diet on the block, the Paleo diet, but is it really a healthier approach to eating?

without consulting a registered dietitian before doing so, especially people with conditions like diabetes. She does however acknowledge that the Paleo diet endorses a number of positive, healthy lifestyle options. “It encourages you to eat vegies – you can never eat too many vegies – and the other thing is that it promotes fresh eating. What I also find encouraging about diets like this one, which are frequently in the media, is that it gets people talking about food and what they should or should not be eating,” she said. For many local people, beginning to eat Paleo stemmed from their involvement in Crossfit, an exercise mantra that has seen

ay goodbye to that bread roll, throw out your Weet-bix and empty that carton of milk down the sink because the Paleo diet is in and it’s here to

stay. Otherwise known as the ‘caveman diet’, turning Paleo is all about getting back to basics and eating like the hunter-gatherers of our past by losing processed food as well as completely cutting sugar, grains and dairy from your diet. Paleo followers believe wholeheartedly that it is their way or the highway, but the diet has experienced some backlash for its strict ways, especially as it endorses giving up whole food groups for good. Nutritionists and dietitians are endlessly butting heads over the issue, with many claiming that it is not an option that should be taken lightly and should only be considered after consulting with a registered professional. Robyn Sparkes is a registered dietitian working for Nepean Blue Mountains Medicare Local who told the Weekender that she can’t stress enough how important a balanced diet is. “As a nutritional break down the Paleo diet is a high protein, low carb diet, which is a common type of diet you will see – the Atkins diet for example, followed a similar principle,” she said. “This differs quite greatly from my philosophy on diet. The difference is that the Paleo diet eliminates two major food groups, being breads and grains as well as dairy. By taking these foods away, you are losing a lot of dietary fibre, which is essential for balanced health, and it is quite low in calcium.” The elimination of entire food groups like these, which encompass foods like muesli, cereal, bread, cheese, milk and yogurt can be seriously detrimental to a person’s health, according to Ms Sparkes, who said that although substitute foods may contain the essential nutrients and vitamins found in grains and dairy, they don’t contain enough and in some cases there is no substitute at all. “The only carbohydrates that you get in the Paleo diet are from fruit and if you cut that out additionally [which many Paleo followers are known to do] you are not getting any at all. Your brain can use only carbohydrates as a energy source,” she said. “A healthy diet is all about portions. We probably eat too much of these food groups [dairy and grains] – our portion sizes are huge – but it is not the foods themselves that is a problem, it is how much we eat,” she said. She voiced concern over the amount of people who are turning to the Paleo diet

specialised gyms pop up across the local area, and has successfully seen them lose weight and feel healthier. A Crossfit coach recommended the diet to local resident Tanya Hart, who has always found it difficult to keep off weight and suspected that the reason for this might be diet-related. In mid 2012 she began the diet and hasn’t looked back. “The more I found out about it and could see the changes in my health by following it, the more I wanted to change for the long term,” she said. “There was a point when I first got into it that I was really strict, everything by the book, but maybe over the last 12 months or so I have eased off a bit. Susan Blenman found the Paleo diet cured her migraines

While for Ms Hart, changing her lifestyle to follow the Paleo diet was a matter of personal choice, for some people it has been the solution to long-term medical problems. For Glenmore Park resident Susan Blenman, the Paleo diet has been life changing. She suffered from chronic migraines that could not be diagnosed, low energy levels and arthritis that caused her tremendous pain. Ms Blenman saw nutritionist Fiona Kane from Informed Health who after taking blood tests, diagnosed her with intolerances to both fructose and olive oil and recommended the Paleo diet. “I was hooked, my migraines went overnight – I kid you not – and my last blood test at my rheumatologist showed zero inflammation. Living lean means feeling awesome every day. I get a tonne of vitamins including calcium from my spinach and broccoli and almonds,” Ms Blenman said. But the Dietitians Association of Australia is opposed to the Paleo diet, saying that a lack of scientific evidence to support it means the new craze “just doesn’t stack up”. “A recent search of the published studies looking at Palaeolithic diets revealed no more than 10 studies, all with very few participants over very short timeframes – most less than three months. And many people dropped out of the studies, claiming the diet was difficult to follow,” said Association CEO Claire Hewat. “We all eat, and so to a certain extent, we know what food makes us feel good. But rather than getting on the latest fad diet bandwagon, I urge Australians to become familiar with the Dietary Guidelines and

“But the difference easing off has made is noticeable. When I first started training and following the diet, my body changed a lot. I was leaner and had lots of energy and felt really great. You couldn’t argue with what you could see. “Since I’m not so strict, I’m certainly not as lean, but I know what it would take to get back into shape. The difference small changes to my diet made really speaks truths about the benefits of following Paleo.” She still follows the lifestyle 80 per cent of the time but is less strict on the weekends and on the occasion when she craves some pizza and ice cream. Though she loves the results she has received with the Paleo diet and the recipes she has picked up, being Paleo has tested her social life at times. “You don’t want a piece of cake at a birthday, or alcohol at a party, or the bread roll that comes with dinner and people sometimes think you are being difficult,” she said. “Particularly if you aren’t actually gluten intolerant or celiac, which everyone seems to think are the only reasons to cut out gluten and grains from your diet,” Ms Hart added. “Paleo ruined a lot of food for me. Something I once thought was healthy might not be, or something I loved is not allowed. “For example I used to love frozen yogurt, which seemed like a healthy alternative to ice cream – then I asked them for an ingredients list and was mortified by what was actually in it. As much as I appreciate being healthier and more aware of what I put in my body, sometimes you do think that ignorance is bliss.”

COVER STORY

Lead singer visits the back catalogue of Aussie Crawl Although there’s no chance of a band reunion, James Reyne is reunited with the hit that had so many Australian Crawl fans flocking to their local pubs

ames Reyne has been asked many times whether Australian Crawl will ever get back together. Which isn’t surprising when you see so many bands reforming. But while the answer to the reunion question is a definitive no, Reyne’s next tour will be a reunion of sorts between the singer and the songs of the much loved Aussie band.

J

KATE REID @kate_reid6

Come August the ‘James Reyne plays Australian Crawl: The Crawl Files Live’ tour will be working its way across Australia with Penrith audiences getting the chance to see the show at the Evan Theatre on Thursday, August 14. “We’ll do all the stuff they know and love from all those years ago,” Reyne said. Looking back on such a well known and extensive back catalogue the former Australian Crawl lead singer seems to have a mix of reactions. “Some of them are really terrible so we’re not doing them,” he said. “A couple of them I was vaguely surprised, I said ‘ohhh I forgot about that, oh that’s not too bad actually’ and I’d completely forgotten about them.” While Reyne plays some of the band’s tracks on his solo tours – “because you kind of get lynched if you don’t” he admits – there are many that haven’t been played for almost 30 years. “A lot of them I haven’t played for such a long time it’s almost like playing new songs,” he said. Earlier this year the band’s back catalogue was released digitally. In a testament to the popularity of The Crawl, their ‘Greatest Hits’ album made it to the top spot on the iTunes chart and five of the band’s albums featured in the iTunes top 100 at the same time. Quite impressive considering the band parted ways almost three decades ago. Reyne attributes the band’s success, and the success of many of his contemporaries, to being around during a healthy time for Aussie music, before people had access to the online world to keep them entertained. “People’s general source of entertainment was going to see bands down at wherever your local place was where bands played – so there was a really healthy live circuit. There was a really healthy radio support mechanism too – radio was very supportive of Australian bands and Australian music so it got played a lot and you toured and played 11 months of the year,” he said. And though he does feel that the live scene is still going strong, there are some changes that Reyne has noticed since his days with Australian Crawl.

“There wasn’t the acoustic scene that there is now,” he said. The Australian Crawl back catalogue includes the albums ‘Crawl File’, ‘Sons of Beaches’ and ‘Sirocco’ and featured hits like ‘The Boys Light Up’, ‘Errol’ and of course the Australian treasure that is ‘Reckless’. “People seem to like [Reckless] and when I wrote it, it came really fast, it wrote itself almost. And to the point where it came so fast I didn’t think it was any good and I didn’t really play it to anybody for ages,” Reyne said about the track. “It was one of those songs I thought

A lot of them I haven’t played in such a long time it’s like playing new songs

‘I’ll fix that up one day, I’ll fix it all up, I’ll change it and make sure it makes sense’. Because to me it doesn’t make any sense, except for the fact that it’s a bunch of desperate images about loneliness or being alone.” In recognition of Reyne’s services to the arts and his charity work he was recently awarded an Order of Australia Medal. “I was chuffed, I was very surprised, I was extremely surprised,” he said. With such a wealth of knowledge to draw on, Reyne has some advice for those who are at the start of the journey through the often challenging music industry landscape. “If you believe in yourself and you persevere something will happen, at some level, sometime. It’s got to,” he says. ‘James Reyne plays Australian Crawl: The Crawl Files Live’ will be on at the Evan Theatre on Thursday, August 14 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $58.50. FIONA O’LOUGHLIN PIONEER TAVERN SATURDAY, AUGUST 30

This comedy great and mother of five has been cracking up audiences for years with her frank and brutally honest humour that centres around her experiences as a mother, recounting family life with her trademark blunt wit. Fiona started a little later in life than many comedians but that hasn’t stopped her from rising to the top. In 2001 she won the Best Newcomer Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and since then she has enjoyed sell out shows and become a regular on the festival circuit. It’s not just Australia that loves Fiona, international audiences appear to have warmed to her brand of humour as well.

She has enjoyed repeat seasons in Hong Kong, headlined at LA’s ‘Improv Comedy Club’ and was asked to perform at Montreal’s ‘Just For Laughs’, which is an invitation only comedy event. Joining Fiona is Chris Radburn who like Fiona is honest, relatable and of course, seriously funny. The former lawyer was an international finalist on NBC’s ‘Last Comic Standing’ and has appeared on numerous shows including ‘The NRL Footy Show’ and the ‘Sydney Comedy Festival Gala’. Rounding out the lineup as MC is Steve Philp, comedian and MC of Tropfest for the last eight years. In 2011 he became a finalist for Time Out Comedian of the Year. This man is in high demand and has featured on ‘The NRL Footy Show’ and ‘Top Gear Australia’. Philp has toured with the likes of Carl Barron, Tom Green and Arj Barker. If you like the idea of a night of free laughs – and really who doesn’t – then grab some friends and head along to this hilarious comedy event. Fiona O’Loughlin will be performing at the Pioneer Tavern on Saturday, August 30 at 9pm. This is an 18+ event. Entry is free but bookings are essential through Pioneer Tavern on 4736 4466.

Bruce Garrett, played by Frost, was a childhood dance champion before he experienced a bullying incident that ended his dance career. 22 years later he is unfit and wallowing in self pity, that is until he meets his new boss Julia, played by Rashida Jones. Unfortunately his alpha male work mate, Drew, played by Chris O’Dowd, has formed an attraction to Julia as well. This leaves Bruce with only one option, reignite his passion for salsa in an attempt to win over his beautiful boss and impress her. Joining Frost is his ‘Hot Fuzz’ co-star Olivia Colman and star of the hit comedy ‘Bridesmaids’, Wendi McLendon-Covey. ‘Cuban Fury’ is a fun movie that will have you laughing and dancing along as Bruce goes from zero to dance hero. A great one for the family.

THESE FINAL HOURS RATED MA Starring: Nathan Phillips, Jessica DeGouw and Sarah Snook

ANGUS AND JULIA STONE (SELF TITLED ALBUM) Out Now

The news has just come through; the world is about to end. You have 12 hours to live. What would you do? This is the basic premise of ‘These Final Hours’, a new Australian post-apocalyptic drama movie, directed by Zak Hilditch and produced by Liz Kearney. Australia has become a lawless and chaotic place and James, played by Nathan Phillips, has decided how he wants to spend his final hours; at the last party he will ever get a chance to attend. On his way to the end of the world party he comes across a scared little girl, Rose, played by Angourie Rice, who is looking for her father. This discovery changes everything. Once the self absorbed Nathan arrives at the party he realises that responsibility is calling him and so he takes on the job of helping the lost girl find her father before the world ends. Starring alongside Phillips is Jessica de Gouw as Nathan’s mistress Zoe. The film also stars Sarah Snook and David Field. ‘These Final Hours’ was screened at the 67th annual Cannes Film Festival in May of this year in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the festival.

This is the album that fans weren’t sure would ever happen. It was four years ago that Angus and Julia Stone released their last album, ‘Down the Way’. The Aussie brother-sister duo absolutely cleaned up at the ARIAs (they won five of the nine ARIAs they were nominated for) and despite their success, what followed was solo projects and a musical split for the siblings. Fast forward to 2014 and fans have got their wish. The Stones are back together and making more of their signature folksy music. When it comes to Angus and Julia Stone you will either love them or hate them. Julia’s vocals are childlike and beautiful and Angus’ has a distinct drawl and a I’m-living-in-my-own-littleworld attitude. Together the duo make raw and emotionally powerful music. The track ‘A Heartbreaker’ is a rich and full song that perfectly embodies the growth of the duo. This is Angus and Julia Stone amped up that little bit further, taking their music to a new level that will no doubt win them new fans while still satisfying existing fans. ‘Death Defying Acts’ starts off a bit more stripped back, opening with Julia’s vocals and an acoustic guitar, before building to a powerful hypnotic track.

WINE

I’ve no beef about this great drop DAVID ELLIS

LOCAL RADIO

amish MacGowan has done a couple of interesting things with his 2012 Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon: he’s made this one from fruit sourced purely from Central Victoria for the first time in the wine’s history, and he’s lowered the alcohol content by almost 1.5 per cent. Yet while tweaking this vintage to obvious advantage, he’s not taken away from the wine’s primary mission of the past 10 years or so, which has been to provide an absolutely ideal accompaniment to prime beef. He’s given it more poise, vibrancy and freshness – as he says, “a little more sophistication.” And he stresses that it’s not a huge and sudden leap in style, but something he and his team have been working towards over the past few years. “Lowering the alcohol (to 14 per cent) is both a considered change in my winemaking philosophy, and an anticipation of where I believe the consumer’s preference is trending,” he says. “Blending 58 per cent Central Victoria fruit, 28 per cent Goulburn Valley and 14 per cent from the Strathbogie Ranges has given a wine with lovely varietal ripe black fruits, rich dark chocolate and vanillin smoky aromas,” Hamish adds. “And a full-bodied palate characterised by firm tannins and a savoury, masculine finish. I’d say it’s the most food-friendly example Angus we’ve made to date.” And most importantly, it’s still that perfect match with prime beef dishes that are cooked to perfection – particularly at $19.95.

GET INVOLVED TODAY

VOLUNTEERS To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

“

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

”

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved.

While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices.

Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

Don’t be a fancy dress party pooper KATHERINE TWEED

life & style

why you choose not to go all out with a costume, see below my fancy dress party do’s and don’ts. DO • make an effort, even if it is just throwing a basketball jersey over your clothes and calling yourself a ‘basketballer’. • take a prop. Props can be the difference between an OK costume and a brilliant one – to me they say ‘I really gave this some thought’ and that’s what a host wants to see. • think outside the box. It is fun to keep everyone guessing by coming up with a clever dress-up idea.

katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

There are lots of cheap and easy costumes to make or source if you put some effort in

There is nothing quite like turning up to a party to be greeted at the door by a bear, passed in the hallway by a butterfly and accompanied to the bar by a basketballer, especially when the hostess is a Barbie. I recently attended a friend’s 21st birthday party and if you haven’t guessed already, everyone who attended had to dress up in something starting with the letter ‘B’. Our birthday girl Brittany – note the ‘B’ for Brittany – made the perfect Barbie and her friends and family were all dressed according to the theme, for the most part. The thing I love about themed fancy dress parties is that anything goes. You can get as dressed up or as dressed down as you like and you have an excuse to do so – there were people at this particular party wearing trackies and flannelette shirts... ‘bogans’ of course. But what I don’t like about them is that you always get the select few people who think that they can bend the rules and wear your standard ‘party-wear’ as if there wasn’t a theme at all. I have good friends who are regular fancy dress offenders: one, for example turned up to our ‘B’-themed party in his normal clothes and called himself ‘Bieber’... really? Although he almost had the hair thing going on, who did he think he was fooling? We all know you either forgot, were too lazy or too cool to dress up like the rest of us. Maybe you could call his ‘costume’ clever, like one of my girlfriends who wore a black fur wrap and called herself a bear, but to me these are both examples of people not trying hard enough. For a dress-up party, at least some effort is required. While in the scheme of things it doesn’t really matter – these particular people had just as much fun guessing what everyone else was dressed up as, as the rest of us and enjoyed the party all the same – those of you who are not prepared to throw on a silly costume for a night really need to re-think your strategies. Dressing up is so much fun and in most cases, when you arrive at the party out of costume, you’ll be the minority. If dressing up in costume is a point of stress for you and that’s

e M r e g r Oh Bu

DON’T • come in your normal clothes. The excuses get tiring for everyone involved and it is just boring. • go over-the-top. It’s a similar situation to a wedding: in the same way as you shouldn’t try to look better than the bride, the most over-the-top costume award should go to the host or hostess. • wear something promiscuous. Sure, wear a snow white outfit that looks like lingerie if you really want to but you won’t win the best-dressed award... unless the theme is ‘pimps and hoes’.

are many different ways you can gift jewellery for an anniversary

Traditional or modern anniversary gifts? We often have clients in store looking for anniversary gifts for their husband or wife. There is a well known ‘Traditional Anniversary Gift List’ and now a revised version known as the ‘Modern Anniversary Gift List’. This whole issue of anniversary lists came about in the early 1920’s when the first known list of traditional anniversary gifts was published. It’s thought that this list began with basic, inexpensive items for younger couples getting married, just starting a life together. For example traditionally to commemorate your first anniversary the gift that was purchased for your partner was paper. Followed by cotton, leather, flowers and wood, which rounded off the first five years of marriage. Over time the gift ideas became more practical and/or higher in price. Nowadays most couples we see tend to favour the modern list of anniversary gifts. I’d like to take a look at the modern list with you and make some suggestions as to what you could keep in mind as far as jewellery goes. Please let me know if this helps! The modern gift list suggests a clock for your first anniversary, followed by china, crystal and glass, appliances and silverware for years two through to five. You could easily choose a watch for your first anniversary followed by freshwater pearls as the majority of these are created in and sourced from China. Year three could be a semi precious quartz crystal piece like a lemon quartz pendant or earrings. This type of stone is generally quite reasonable in price and looks fantastic on most skin tones. A great idea for year four if your wife is a real jewellery fan is a personal ultrasonic to keep her items bright and sparkly! Year five is an easy one – a nice silver jewellery piece. Or even a jewellery box, possibly with some engraving to make it that little bit more personal and unique. Tenth anniversaries are of course marked by diamonds. And why not? It’s a milestone that’s to be celebrated. I hope that this has given you some ideas for future anniversary gifts to mark such special occasions. The team at York Jewellers have these lists on hand and will be able to assist you with selecting the right piece for you.

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Your bohemian side shines brightly this week, as you inspire others with your quicksilver mind and avant-garde spirit. Attached Aquarians, the relationship heads into exciting territory. You enjoy sharing common interests but you’re also keen to pursue personal projects, plus explore new hobbies and adventures.

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Are you feeling bored to bits with the daily grind? Seek out stimulating people this week as you celebrate your versatility; shake up your usual routine; and do something wildly different. It’s also a terrific time to express your Good Samaritan side as you nurse a family member, support a friend in need, or do some volunteer work.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Are you sitting around berating the world for not being the way you want it to be? It’s time for Rams to ricochet into brand new territory, as you initiate changes in increasingly creative ways. As birthday great Andy Warhol declared: “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change things yourself.” Thursday is a super day to help someone in need.

Mercury and Uranus stimulate your Cat curiosity and propel you into a brand new adventure … but you may also encounter some road blocks, as Saturn stymies your progress. Hasty actions and halfbaked plans will only lead to long-term frustrations. If you can balance dynamic action with a dose of discipline, then you’ll have a good week.

Impulse buys now could lead to cash flow problems later on. So avoid making expensive purchases or major money moves, as you’re inclined to view your current financial situation through ridiculously rose-coloured glasses. In the present economic climate, slow and steady wins the money race. The weekend stars encourage you to extend your friendship net far and wide.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

You’re thrust into the spotlight this week. The Sun, Mercury and Jupiter give you a confidence boost, so polish up your public persona and make sure you’re putting on a good show. Things get serious on Sunday when a family member frustrates you or an authority figure antagonises you. Some deft diplomacy will get you through.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Many gregarious Geminis are keen to share information and exchange ideas with family, friends and colleagues. Just make sure your amusing chatter doesn’t denigrate into gratuitous gossip. Saturn steadies your mercurial mind on the weekend, plus Uranus helps you approach a dilemma in a daring new way.

With the Sun, Mercury and Jupiter all activating your aspirations zone, it’s time to dream big dreams for the future. They won’t materialise overnight though, you need to be patient and persistent. Be inspired by Barack Obama: “It’s only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realise your true potential.”

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Don’t assume you have all the answers Crabs. You have much to learn from others, especially the children and teenagers in your life. Listen to the wise words that come out of the mouths of babes! Money matters are on your mind on Sunday so make sure all bills are paid and resist the urge to spend extra cash.

Avoid being a lone wolf. If you nurture close relationships and network with colleagues, then you can combine your talents on a creative joint project. You’ll have to be patient though. A relationship with a friend or acquaintance could cool, as responsibilities overtake having fun.

Do you understand your home loan needs? Buying your own home is one of the great Australian dreams – all that serenity! Researching the right home loan, however, is not. In fact, pouring through financial documents and squinting to read the fine print on your new bank agreement can sometimes be the stuff of nightmares! It’s no surprise then that you may be tempted to simply look for the loan with the best rate and sign on the dotted line when making the exciting leap into the property market. However, deciding on the most suitable home loan is just as important as choosing the right house. The home you purchase needs to tick all the boxes such as having enough bedrooms and being in a good location. Likewise, the mortgage you take out should be similarly tailored to your situation. Below are a few questions to consider before choosing your new home loan. What type of buyer are you? Whether you’re a property market first-timer or a seasoned house-hunting veteran, understanding your position as a buyer is key to choosing the best home loan for you. Is the loan fixed or variable? Home loan lenders generally offer several different options in regards to your interest – fixed, variable or split. A variable rate will fluctuate – usually in conjunction with the official cash rate – while a fixed loan ensures your interest remains unchanged for some time. If you’re still sitting on a white-picket fence, a split rate home loan gives you the best of both worlds, with part of your loan fixed, and part variable. What are your repayment options? If you prefer to budget in accordance to your fortnightly pay cheque, yet your bank insists you make monthly home loan repayments, you could find yourself faced with a headacheinducing financial mess. When choosing the right home loan, check your lender’s repayment options. Does the loan offer flexibility? It can be difficult to predict how your personal finances will stand in the next few months, let alone years. It is therefore important to make sure your bank offers flexibility on your home loan arrangement.

This week I received a question off Shane Biggs asking if his 14-year-old son would get any benefit from weight training. Done properly, strength training offers many bonuses to younger people. And a positive early start can put your child on a lifetime path to better health and fitness. Just don’t confuse strength training with bodybuilding or powerlifting. These activities are largely driven by competition, with participants trying to lift heavier weights or build bigger muscles than those of other athletes. This can put too much strain on young muscles, tendons and areas of cartilage that haven’t yet turned to bone (growth plates) especially when proper technique is sacrificed in favour of lifting larger amounts of weight. During childhood, kids improve their body awareness, control and balance through active play. As early as age seven or eight, however, strength training can become a valuable part of an overall fitness plan – as long as the child is mature enough to follow directions and practice safe technique and form. As children play or exercise they are forming muscle and new neural circuits that will enable them to become not only stronger but better able to control their movements. It’s not the time to introduce a lot of ‘partial’ movements you might see a bodybuilder doing. I tell everybody, especially kids, train movements not muscles. Swinging on some monkey bars will build functional upper body strength way more than sitting on a bench doing strict bicep curls. Keep any training very positive with your kids, you are setting up habits they will keep the rest of their lives. If you’re not sure what is a safe level for kids, start with a coach or personal trainer who has experience with youth strength training. They can create a safe, effective strength training program based on your child’s age, size, skills and sports interests. Or enrol your child in a strength training class designed for kids. Remember, keep it fun and don’t be afraid to join in and show them how fun it can be!

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? Many years ago with three small children at home I was not in a good place. I didn’t like where I was in life, how I looked, how I felt, had no desire to socialise and felt alone. Always being an active person I turned to the gym and I used the gym as a form of escape. An escape from everyday mundane kiddie/housewife stuff. Through these daily escapes I learnt so much. I felt better about myself and therefore was a happier person (easier to live with says my husband!). I slept better, I ate better, I loved the world a whole lot more because my state of mind was in a better place. Not only had I found my ‘mojo’ again but the old ‘me’ had returned! The physical conditioning was an added bonus. I loved life again!

fruit. They don’t miss what they don’t know! Coconut water is the only ‘juice’ at our place.

How does fitness feature in your life? I’m a ‘thirty something’-year-old mum of four. I live a crazy life managing my family, running a business, being a diligent student, everybody’s taxi driver, a tennis mum, a soccer mum, a karate mum but most importantly I’m ‘me’. I’m Ivana. I’m extremely passionate about all things ‘health’ and ensure that I always make time to maintain my own. Without putting valuable time into ‘me’ the rest would simply fall apart. All aspects of health are so important to me, not just to set an example to my children but to ensure I’m here to see them pass it on to their own.

Early diagnosis of heartworm is key to your pet’s survival

Treating your pet for heartworm

Life insurance of a different sort

Last week we discussed intestinal worms in dogs and cats. This week we will be talking about disease caused by heartworm and how can be prevented. Heartworm, as the name suggests, is a parasite that is able to live inside the chambers of an animal’s heart as well as inside the arteries of the lungs. These worms will feed on blood and in severe cases they can grow up to 30cm long and be in populations of over 200! Heartworm most commonly affects dogs, but cats and ferrets can also be infected. How is heartworm spread? This disease can only be transmitted by mosquito bites. If an animal has heartworm, the offspring of the heartworm is microscopic little worms called microfilaria. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it ingests microfilaria. This microfilaria matures inside the mosquito until it reaches the larval stage. When the same mosquito bites another pet, it infects them with the larval stage which then migrates to the blood vessels and grows to adult heartworm. What are the signs of heartworm disease? Heartworm is usually a slow disease and often signs are not noticed until disease is severe. The heartworm interferes with the functioning of the heart and the most common signs are a dry and persistent cough, exercise intolerance, weight loss and weakness. In more advanced cases you may see distressed breathing, distended abdomen and collapse. Treatment of advanced heartworm disease is complex and difficult and EARLY diagnosis and prevention is important. How can I prevent heartworm in my pet? There are many products available that aim to prevent heartworm. Some of these products are given monthly and there is even a product that can be given as a yearly injection. It is best to speak to your veterinarian to determine a regime that suits you and your lifestyle. Puppies should be started on heartworm prevention by the age of three months. If your pet has not been on heartworm prevention for a while, the best thing to do is start prevention. However, we can do a simple blood test to make sure that your pet is heartworm free so be sure to see your veterinarian first.

We treasure our security. We keep our homes well protected, often with extensive alarms and locks to provide security against burglary or theft. We value personal security, having various PIN numbers and passwords for our credit cards, savings accounts and computer and mobile phone access. We make sure that we have quality superannuation schemes or well thought through savings and investment plans to protect us and provide security in our older age or if we lose our income. Increasingly, as health and medical costs grow, we are aware of the security provided by health insurance in case of serious illness or accident. And sadly, with the reality of our death, people are increasingly aware of the need for the security of life insurance. At the same time, TV advertisements remind us of the need for funeral plans so we can provide security for our families and those we love. But what about when life seems hopeless and security is gone? And what about after our death? So many of us make our lives as secure as we can up until that point, but what about beyond the grave? Hear the words of Jesus from the Bible’s book of John; “This is the will of Him (God) who sent me: that I should lose none of those He has given me but should raise them up on the last day.” What an extraordinary promise! For those who belong to Jesus, nothing whatsoever will separate them from Jesus, even death itself, because on that last day when everything comes to an end, Jesus will raise us up to be with him for all eternity. Now that is real security!

REV JOHN LAVENDER

While most of us see getting out the lawnmower as a chore, there are growing numbers in this country who salivate over their mowers for another reason – they modify and race aboard them at speeds of up to a bizarre 140km/h. The idea of racing around on ride-on lawnmowers goes back to 1963 in America and 1973 in the UK, while in Australia five blokes are said to have decided to race each other on their mowers to the top of a local hill in 1978 – after taking a glass or three at the Harrietville pub in Victoria. And as a result of that, says Brian Guzzardi, Public Relations Officer for the Australian Ride-On Lawn Mower Racing

Association (AROLMRA), “lawn-mower racing was born in this country”. Today half a dozen clubs in Victoria, NSW and Queensland boast a-near 200 members who are required by club rules to keep the original bodies of their ride-on’s, but can re-work everything underneath from engines to chassis and wheels to enable mowers to reach those amazing speeds. Regular meets are held with distance races, sprints and endurance events, while many members also show-off their machines at country carnivals and shows, with funds raised from many of these events going to charities. And yes, they do remove the blades!

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

The Evergreens are keen to have new members join their social group utting a stop to social isolation can be as simple as joining a social group like the Evergreens in Erskine Park. The 10 members of the Evergreens get picked up from their homes in a bus, except for the few who can drive, and are taken to Erskine Park Community Centre, where they meet for a chat and tea once a week. On alternate Wednesdays, the group goes on outings.

P

“I don’t go anywhere except with the Evergreens, and that is the case for some of the others. The benefits of this is the companionship and caring for one another,” said long time member Jeanette McLean, 77. “We don’t ‘do’ anything – we aren’t a craft group, we don’t play cards or anything like that. We just go to the centre to have a cup of coffee and talk. “When we go on group outings, because

we aren’t as mobile as most, we normally just go to local clubs.” The group has been running for over 20 years and is now running with the assistance of St Clair Youth and Neighbourhood Team (SCYNT). “Meeting together in a group breaks up the social isolation that some seniors may be faced with,” said Naomi Tarr, SCYNT Community Worker. Australia Post is marking two significant Australian military centenaries with a new stamp issue commemorating the first flight by an Australian military aircraft and the commissioning of Australia’s first submarines. Australia Post Philatelic Manager, Mr Michael Zsolt said Australia Post is proud to commemorate two significant military centenaries. “This Australian military inspired stamp release featuring aircraft and submarine vessels is a unique collectable range,” Mr Zsolt said. On 1 March 1914 the first flight of a military airplane took place when Lieutenant Eric Harrison flew Bristol Military Biplane CFS-3 at the Army flying field, Point Cook, Victoria. Australia’s first submarines, British-built E-class vessels known as HMAS AE1 and HMAS AE2, were commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in February 1914 and arrived in Sydney on 24 May. During World War I both submarines took part in the occupation of Rabaul in German New Guinea. The stamp issue is available from August 5, 2014.

Sneak peak at national exhibition, just for Penrith! Top photographers’ works are now on display at Penrith Library KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

ocal residents have the rare opportunity to peruse the works of some of the country’s best photographers, which will be on display at Penrith Library for the month. The works are being displayed in the lead up to the Australian Photographic Society’s (APS) annual exhibition, the national body representing Australian photographers, which will commence in September at the University of Ballarat, Victoria. With the photographs already prepared for exhibition and being stored at the home of local resident and Chairman of the Print Division of the APS, Brian Corlis, it made sense for them to go on display early in the Library for local residents to appreciate and admire. “It would be a shame for them to sit in

my garage all the way up until September, so as I live in the area myself, I thought I would put them on display a little early to give Penrith residents the chance to have a look,” Mr Corlis said. The September exhibition features 50 large photographic works, including two by local photographers, printed on canvas. For the Penrith exhibition, the 50 works have been split into three groups, which will be on display for two weeks at a time. “They are a collection of some of the best works of some of Australia’s best photographers, presented on canvas as almost photographic art. Each photographer has their own style so each work is varied – it really is a mixed bag,” Mr Corlis said. “Most of the works submitted are by international award winning photographers.” An open invitation to enter their work was made to members of the APS and only the best of those entered were chosen to be transferred to canvas and featured in the exhibition. 16 photographs are currently on display at Penrith Library and will be swapped for the second group after this weekend. The Penrith exhibition will close on Saturday, August 30 so head down soon to see these amazing images.
