COVER STORY

The original ‘sexy things’ bring disco back to Oz Hot Chocolate were responsible for some of the biggest hits of the disco era and say that they still have all the time in the world for their dancing, singing, freedom-loving fans...

hen you think of bedroom music there’s a few songs that come to mind – one of those is Hot Chocolate’s 1975 hit ‘You Sexy Thing’. Written in the disco era in the 70’s, the track topped the charts once again in 1997 after it was featured in the film ‘The Full Monty’. Founding member Patrick Olive believes the success of the song is the result of stroking the listener’s ego.

W KATE REID @kate_reid6

“A lot of people could identify with the song. Everyone in his or her mind thinks they’re a sexy thing. They think the song is all about them,” said founding member Patrick Olive. “Nobody wants to be left out, they want to think, ‘yeah, well I’m a sexy thing as well’.” It’s the combination of that make-youwant-to-dance rhythm and slightly raunchy lyrical content that makes the songs of Hot Chocolate so damn sexy. “It’s what you call a poetic licence. And I think most songwriters have poetic licence; they can sing about anything at all and get away with it,” Olive said. “In the song the guy’s saying ‘now you’re lying next to me, giving it to me’, you can sing that and get away with it. If you say that you could get arrested. “But you sing that and people think, ‘hey, that’s a great song’.” Hot Chocolate have been performing for over four decades and along with ‘You Sexy Thing’ the band has released countless singles including ‘Everyone’s a Winner and ‘ Emma’. After a successful tour in 2013 Hot Chocolate will be back on our shores, with a show at Rooty Hill RSL on Thursday, October 9. “We’re going to have them dancing, singing and really having a fantastic Hot Chocolate evening,” Olive said. After forming in London in 1968, Hot Chocolate went on to become the only UK band to have hits every year for 15 consecutive years. The group have toured extensively, both locally and internationally and were asked to play at Buckingham Palace for the prewedding reception of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Olive has particularly fond memories of the band’s early work during the Disco era of the 70’s where the band spent time with musicians such as Leo Sawyer and Suzi Quatro, as well as bands like Kool & the Gang and Geordie, whose lineup included AC/DC’s current frontman, Brian Johnson. “They were happy times,” Olive recalled. “I’d say they’re happy times now but I think they were happier times back in the

If you say that you could get arrested!

day, in the 70’s, because people were like free everything – freedom, free expression. “People weren’t afraid to let themselves go and have a good time but I think [now] everything’s a little bit closed up through political correctness. “But back in the day it was very nice. Really, really happy times.” Looking over the band’s back catalogue – which includes nine studio albums and numerous compilations – Olive has particularly strong feelings towards their first release, 1974’s ‘Cicero Park’. He says that he is most proud of that particular album. “It’s always the very first album because you don’t know what’s going to happen to it and when it does become a hit... you’re very proud of it,” he said. Having been in the music industry for so long Olive has found that the band has

collected fans from a variety of different backgrounds, with the ages of audience members ranging anywhere from eightyears-old to 80. “A lady came with a photograph and she said, ‘I saw you guys 35 years ago,’ and she showed me a photograph of us and we all were so young looking, I couldn’t believe how young we were then,” he said. Hearing from fans who have been coming to see Hot Chocolate since a young age, Olive says he couldn’t be happier. “It’s what we’re in the business for, people to be appreciative of what we have done and what we’re doing, and it’s really, really nice when they do that, and we have all the time in the world for them,” he said. Hot Chocolate will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Thursday, October 9. Tickets are $65. To purchase tickets or for more information visit www.rootyhillrsl. com.au or call 9625 5500.

Big Ted’s big adventure lay School is an Aussie favourite that has been entertaining kids and parents alike since the very first television show aired in 1966. Taking to the road this October, audiences will get a chance to see all their favourite characters come to life on stage with the new show ‘Prince of Bears’. The show follows Big Ted who sets out on an adventure to find his castle. Along the way he will stop off at a farm, a cottage and a forest. He will be joined by his friends Little Ted, Humpty and Jemima, as well as two Play School presenters. ‘Prince of Bears’ is sure to delight the little ones, which is one of the reasons why presenter Abi Tucker loves being involved with the show. “You look out and their little faces are all bobbing around and you see their favourite songs and then when they’re really into the story. It’s an interesting process actually,” Abi said.

P

PLAY SCHOOL LIVE EVAN THEATRE WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1

It’s not all about the kids though, the show offers a memorable experience for parents and carers as well. “As a parent to see your child’s response... I’ve only just become one so I now fully know that feeling of seeing the look of astonishment in your child’s eyes, it’s incredible,” Abi said. The ‘Prince of Bears’ live show will include stories, songs and games to keep kids entertained. There will also be plenty of audience participation and lots to laugh at. “I’ve had a few moments on the live shows that have had a pretty good response in so far as people were laughing at me not with me,” Abi laughed. “But it’s good fun and it’s always good to be on the road.” Filled with nursery rhymes and great songs for the whole family, the Play School show will have you singing all they way home with your kids, “There’s a bear in there, and a chair as well!” Play School Live ‘Prince of Bears’ will be on at Evan Theatre on Wednesday, October 1 with shows at 10am, 12pm and 2pm. Tickets are $19.10 with children under 12 months free. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

PRIMARY ETHICS TEACHERS NEEDED While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices. To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

“

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

”

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

Since 2007, Chivers has been astonishing audiences around the globe with death defying feats of genital gesticulation as part of the acclaimed Puppetry of the Penis show, which will be hitting the Evan Theatre in October. While Chivers said it had been some time since the troupe had been on the road – he couldn’t wait to have ‘em rolling in the aisles again. “Yeah it has been a little while – we’ve been hibernating, you know, trimming the hedges – but now were back with a heap of new tricks and we’re ready to go,” he explained. Established in 1997, this unique comedy show has been bewildering onlookers into paroxysms of mirth for almost two decades. Puppetry of the Penis was born when Simon Morley teamed up with fellow

You could say that the Puppetry crew have ended up with their own collection of hanging art now, after a few too many nights entertaining friends and hen’s nights. Their unique style of appendage origami includes bizzare and near impossible feats such as recreating The Eiffel Tower, The Hamburger and The Wristwatch. However Chivers’ said his favourite trick is one that most guys have already tried at least once. “While it does change from time to time, at the moment, my favourite is definitely the woman – partly because it’s so simple and one that most guys have already done,” he said. “Although, my take on The Woman is totally pimped out and she owns the stage in a really, really trashy way – kind of like a Thai ladyboy.” Puppetry of the Penis will be on at Evan Theatre on Friday, October 17. BB has long way to improve Now, before all you haters turn the page or my editor says “Nathan, no more ‘Big Brother’ stories!” Hear me out, please. I’ve been a fan of the show since the day it premiered on Channel Ten way back in 2001. I’ve sat down and watched every season religiously and even prayed for it to come back when it was axed by Ten in 2008. Fortunately for me my prayers were answered by Channel Nine and in 2012 ‘Big Brother’ returned better than ever I imagined. I honestly believe last year’s series, which saw Tim Dormer run rampant and eventually win, was one of the best seasons yet. However this year (I never thought I would say this) I’m struggling with ‘Big Brother’. Don’t get me wrong I still love the show and there’s no way I’ll miss an episode but I think Channel Nine have made few mistakes with it so far. Firstly, I hate having to wait until 8.40pm every night to watch it. This year the show’s being packaged up with ‘The Block’ and instead of starting at the traditional time of 7pm, viewers have to wait for ‘The Block’ to be over to get their ‘BB’ fix. The new timeslot is also hurting the show’s ratings as people can’t be bothered waiting around to watch it. My next gripe with ‘BB’ this year is the casting; it’s absolutely terrible. Don’t get me wrong there are some good eggs but many just seem too similar to each other. There’s no one that makes me want to tune in every night to follow and have a laugh at like Tim last year. I could continue with a few more issues but before I go I wanted to give a special mention to Penrith housemate Lisa, who is on the show this year. Lisa’s a 29-year-old Executive Assistant who grew up in Penrith her whole life but moved to the eastern suburbs a number of years ago. Now Lisa suggests she’s still a Penrith girl at heart but if you read her bio provided by Channel Nine, it’s actually quite offensive and I for one will not be cheering for her to win. Lisa says she was teased for her ‘Westie’ drawl and “so I began to read magazines and teach myself how to dress and speak properly”. Read the whole offensive bio online!

Music THE MAZE RUNNER RATED M Starring: Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, Dylan O’Brien & Will Poulter Now screening at Hoyts Penrith MR PEABODY & SHERMAN RATED PG

Starring: Alison Janney, Ty Burrell & Stephen Colbert Based on characters from the TV series ‘The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show’, ‘Mr Peabody and Sherman’ follows the human and dog duo on a crazy adventure through time. Mischievous boy Sherman decides to take a time machine called ‘The Wabac’ on a joyride with his friend Penny. Unfortunately things don’t go to plan and Mr. Peabody, a highly intelligent dog, must come to the rescue to save the past, present and future before it’s altered forever. The film is full of big names including ‘Modern Family’ star Ty Burrell who does the voice of Mr. Peabody, Allison Janney who does the voice for social service worker Mrs Grunion and Stanley Tucci as the voice of Leonardo da Vinci. ‘Mr Peabody & Sherman’ was directed by Rob Minkoff who also directed the animated classic ‘The Lion King’ and 1999’s ‘Stuart Little’. This is sure to be an absolute hit with the kids and is perfect for the school holidays.

Next in line in the young adult novel film adaptations is ‘The Maze Runner’, which is based on the science fiction trilogy by author James Dashner. Thomas, played by Dylan O’Brien, finds himself in The Glade, which lies in the middle of a maze. He has no recollection of the past and finds himself in a group of other teenage boys, who are all in the same position. Their plan is to escape but so far everyone who has entered the maze has never been seen again. With the arrival of a girl, Teresa, played by Kaya Scodelario, things start to change. Could this be their chance at freedom? The film showcases a cast of new faces, and with the news that pre-production has begun on the sequel – based on ‘The Scorch Trials’, the second book in the series – it looks like the young stars are on the road to becoming Hollywood royalty if the success of young adult novel adaptations like the ‘Twilight’ and ‘Hunger Games’ franchises are anything to go by. This is a film full of action, adventure and plenty of intrigue.

MISSY HIGGINS OZ Out Now Missy Higgins’ newest album ‘Oz’ is a little different to her previous releases. The album sees Missy re-working some classic Aussie tracks from artists like The Drones, The Angels, Something For Kate, Kylie and Paul Kelly. Accompanying the 15 tracks is a book of essays, each relating to the songs that Missy takes on and recreates as her own. The essay collection explores the singer/songwriter’s thoughts on life and love. Missy has some friends along for the ride on this album, including appearances by Amanda Palmer on the Paul Kelly classic ‘Before Too Long’; Dan Sultan on Slim Dusty’s ‘The Biggest Disappointment’; and Crystal Itjuwalyi Butcher on Warumpi Band’s ‘Blackfella/Whitefella’. ‘Shake Fin Blues’ by the Drones is expertly handled by Missy. The track – which was voted as the greatest Australian song by a Triple J poll of contemporary Australian songwriters – has been re-imagined by the talented singer as an orchestral ballad. The rawness and grit has been removed and what’s left is simple yet beautiful. This album is not just for Missy Higgins fans. It’s a celebration of the talent that the Australian music industry has produced, covering different genres and generations.

FOOD & WINE BY KATHERINE TWEED

New look Osso is divine Osso’s all new menu was launched with a bang last week and will have diners more impressed than ever before enrith’s go-to restaurant for steak and ribs with a fine dining twist, Osso, re-launched its menu with an exclusive dinner and show event last week. Guests were treated to a five course degustation, featuring a selection of dishes straight from the restaurant’s brand new menu – among them some of the most unique and tasty options that Penrith’s dining scene has to offer. While Brittanie Shipway’s cabaret-style performance had diners laughing heartily between courses, the real star of the evening was the food. First course, which appropriately features as an entree in Osso’s new menu, was Beef Carpaccio with Pickled Beetroot, Micro Radish Leaves and Lime Dressing. Presented as a share plate, the dish looked just as it sounds; fancy. Raw beef can be a little intimidating for some diners but whether they liked it or not, those who set their eyes on this dish couldn’t help but have a taste. The beef was expertly prepared, melting in the mouth, and it was complemented perfectly by the creamy dressing. Joining the Beef Carpaccio on the Osso entree menu are dishes including the Braised Spiced Goat, Rock Oysters served in three different ways and a Caprese Salad.

P

Second course revealed the most interesting dish of the night, Strawberry and Pepper Gazpacho Shots with Jambon, which in layman’s terms is a cold soup served with ham. Strawberry is not a flavour often associated with savoury dishes, especially not soups, but the flavour of this dish was so intriguing it was hard not to enjoy. Following the Gazpacho Shots was the Blue Eyed Cod Fillet with Oxtail Roulade, Mushroom, Goats Cheese, Eschallots and Red Wine Sauce, which is featured among Osso’s main dishes. The fish was exactly how you want it; a silky flesh served with a crispy skin, and its partners, especially the Oxtail Roulade, were equally as enjoyable to eat. Also from the restaurant’s main menu was course four; Tenderloin of Beef layered with Chicken Mousse and Mushroom Mousse wrapped in Pastry, served with Cherry Truss Tomatoes and Thyme Jus to finish. This rendition of a Beef Wellington was the hero of the evening for me. It was hearty and filling but still screamed fine dining. Diners can also order mains from the extensive steak menu. The final course for the night, Tar Tartin with Butterscotch and Raisin Sauce and Honeycomb Ice Cream, was the perfect dish to end a night and joins Chocolate Fondant, Crepe Suzette for Two, Tiramisu and a cheese board on Osso’s dessert menu.

udges, reviewers and loyal consumers alike, have long sung the praises of Semillons from Tintilla Estate in the Hunter Valley. Family owned and operated, the company’s 25-acre vineyard was planted with Semillon and Shiraz in the heart of Pokolbin over 20 years ago, and has not looked back since. In fact the Lusby family are proud that they harvest fruit from their low-yielding vines that give rich and concentrated flavours, and make their wines on the one property. And while Semillon and Shiraz remain their mainstays, they now produce quite exceptional Sangiovese as well, and a Pinot Noir and a Chardonnay from fruit off a block a couple of kilometres down the road. But look out for their 2012 Tintilla Angus Hunter Semillon, a lovely un-oaked drop made from handpicked fruit whose lime/lemon flavours blend in well with suggestions of sweeter gooseberry. With its vibrant acidity you can expect this one to do well in the cellar over the coming 10 years. Well recommended to enjoy with all variety of seafoods at $28. One to note: Another Hunter family we’ve long had time and admiration for are the Sloans at Mistletoe Winery also at Pokolbin. They’ve just released an interesting, low-alcohol bubby they call Sparkling Mozcato – the ‘Z’ in deference to the usual ‘Moscato’ spelling. This one’s a clean, fresh and sweetly fruity drop with a slight fizz and just 5.8 per cent alcohol. With an easy-open crown seal, it’s good low-alcohol celebration buying at $22.

Music mayhem marks a milestone TATTERSALLS HOTEL, SATURDAY, SEPT 13

or a year now the Tattersalls Hotel – or the Tatts as it’s affectionately known – has been bringing original live music to the local scene. To celebrate the one year anniversary of that very first gig, the Tatts got together with some of their favourite bands for a night of musical mayhem. Kicking off at 5pm on Saturday night the lineup included The Rumjacks, Front End Loader, The Lazys, Palace of the King, Anxiety Falls, Angel Awake, The Drain Babys, Flying Fists of Fury and Andy Illinois. The bands gave it their all and the punters were clearly happy with another night of awesome, free, live music. Here’s hoping for many more years to come. Photos: Rockfingrz

FLIP OUT TRAMPOLINES

P

Volunteer enrith City Children’s Choir is looking for volunteers for its next project, a mini-opera titled ‘The Snow Wolf’. A steam train travelling through a wintery landscape becomes stuck in huge snow drifts. The passengers alight from the train to try and help the engineers find a way through. But there are wolves howling in the nearby woods. What will happen when the wolves and people meet? The show will give kids the chance to show off their singing and acting skills, with plenty of fun costumes, props and scenery to bring the show to life. There’s no need to audition, with all kids aged seven to 13-years more than welcome to be involved. Applications for the show will close on Wednesday, October 8 and rehearsals for the show will begin on Sunday, October 12. If you’re interested in being part of this miniopera contact administrator Liz Strasser on 0418 202 849 or email pccc@penrithcitychoir.com.au.

Not only is there the massive trampolines but also games and special events for the little ones to join in on. So why not head down to Flip Out these school holidays and get active the fun way. ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Stylish Librans have a passion for fashion. The New Moon’s in your sign, so it’s the perfect week for a hot, new hairstyle, a marvellous makeover or a wardrobe revamp. If you get carried away you’ll encounter cash flow problems, so pace yourself. When it comes to matters of the heart, prepare to be amazed as a relationship takes off.

Nebulous Neptune sucks the wind out of your sails on Monday and you may feel lost, dazed, disappointed or confused. Don’t despair Aries! Instead, get your creative juices flowing in imaginative new directions. The pace picks up on Thursday and Friday, when the Jupiter/Uranus trine reboots your energy.

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Take a break from pursuing ambitious goals early in the week, as you’re liable to feel discouraged and full of self-doubt. The midweek New Moon provides a shot of adrenaline to tired routines, as it reboots your daily schedule and recharges your sense of purpose. Thursday and Friday favour de-cluttering your domestic space.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Twins love to tell an entertaining tale, but resist the urge to be somewhat elastic with the truth early in the week. The New Moon favours friendships, festivities and fun; plus study and social networking are given a boost by the Jupiter/Uranus trine. Mercury shifts into Scorpio on the weekend when you’ll use your clever mind to solve a problem, tackle a puzzle or uncover a complex mystery.

Star predictions for the week beginning Sept 21

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Pluto (your ruling planet) starts moving forwards again, so a personal problem begins to shift and transform. And the power of positive thinking will also help you to resolve it more quickly. Mercury moves into Scorpio on the weekend, which boosts concentration and sharpens your eye for hidden details.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

With restless Jupiter (your ruling planet) jumping through your travel zone – and Uranus giving you a jolt of exciting electrical energy – it’s time to become the adventurous Sagittarian you were born to be. Draw inspiration from birthday great Christopher Reeve (who was a real Superman in many ways), “Either you decide to stay in the shallow end of the pool or you go out in the ocean.”

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

A mountain of ‘what-ifs’ may emerge on Monday, as your Cancerian imagination takes over and you question your actions and doubt your dreams. When it comes to work, business and financial matters, don’t play it too safe. If you hesitate then you’ll miss wonderfully lucky opportunities when they come along.

Capable Capricorns love to be in control but are there too many chiefs and not enough Indians in your world? You prefer to call the shots, but cooperation and compromise are the keys to successful communication this week. And stop stressing about a problem. A family member may be able to help in a way you hadn’t anticipated.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

When it comes to finances, don’t rely on the help or advice of friends. Jupiter and Uranus jolt you into a brave new world later in the week, when you embark on a bold new course. Draw inspiration from Barack Obama, “It’s only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realise your true potential.”

Avoiding complex issues won’t make them magically disappear. Communicate your intentions clearly this week, especially when it comes to friendships and complicated financial matters. Thursday and Friday look fabulous, when the Jupiter/Uranus trine propels you into an exciting new world of possibilities.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

You’re keen to pursue a particular course of action, but is a loved one on the same page? Double-check Virgo, otherwise you’ll find you are veering off in completely different directions. The New Moon motivates you to shake up your attitude to money, as you strive to be more financially savvy.

If you daydream the week away, then you’ll just end up feeling dazed and confused. Instead, try channelling your Piscean energy into creative work projects, spiritual pursuits or helping others. The New Moon lights up your lust and loot zone so some flirtatious Fish can look forward to a hot new romance – or a revitalised old one.

Have your renovation money ready More than half of Australians renovate at some point in their lives and judging by the popularity of the home renovation shows on TV we could just about put home renovations into the category of an Australian national sport! If you’re one of the many home-owners who has been spurred on by a TV renovation program and quietly thinking to yourself that you could do a better job, then there’s a few things to do to make sure that you’re not only renovation ready but that you have your renovation dollars ready. And, it pays to be on the liberal side when doing your renovation budget as it’s not often that you hear of renovation costs coming under or on budget. Renovation rule #1: Charging up the credit card to help pay for a new deck is unfortunately not a great wealth-creation strategy. You don’t want to still be paying off the renovation long after the deck has already undergone a few re-coats of varnish. Renovation rule #2: Using your savings is a much smarter option. I’m not recommending that you blow all your savings on your renovations as it’s definitely a smart thing to have a rainy day fund, but if you’re one of the huge number of Aussies who have been doing the smart thing and taking advantage of the great deposit rates on offer and have built up some savings then do your sums, don’t over extend yourself and dust off your toolbox – congratulations you’re in the renovation ready category! Renovation rule #3: Another alternative is to re-draw on your home loan. The upside here is that there are usually no fees or charges for taking back the money, so all you lose is the gains you would have made in terms of reducing the interest and term of your loan. And if you think about the equity you are building in your home, this may outweigh any extra interest you pay. The solution will be different for everyone and as well as taking into consideration your own financial situation, you also need to calculate whether you can add value without over-capitalising. So, if you are one of the many Aussies spurred on by ‘The Block’, have a chat to your bank or financial advisor about the options available to you.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

JODIE POLUTELE What matters is how you handle a bad day

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

Top three tips for good health? 1. Start today: “I’m too busy at work.” “I’ll start after Easter/Christmas/my birthday.” “I’ve got too much weight to lose, it’s just too hard.” You’ll always be able to find a reason to put off exercising or eating better. Yes, it is going to be hard but time won’t stand still for anyone. No matter how big your goal is, if you start

makes you want to move! When I first started training, I would listen to the same songs every day on my way to the gym: ‘The Fighter’ by Gym Class Heroes; ‘R.I.P.’ by Rita Ora; ‘Shake It Out’ by Florence and the Machine; and ‘Not Giving In’ by Rudimental.

today, in six months you’ll be closer to achieving it. Keep putting it off and in six months you will still be exactly where you are now – or worse. 2. Do what YOU love: My husband enjoys the teamwork and camaraderie of group fitness training, but I love the mental and physical challenge of one-on-one PT sessions where there is nowhere to hide. 3. Be forgiving: Some days you will be tired or stressed or distracted, and your effort might feel pretty average. It happens. What matters is how you handle it. Do you use that bad day as an excuse to give up or do you dig deeper and do better tomorrow? A daily ‘must do’? Listen to music that motivates you or

Biggest health/fitness misconception? “I don’t have time to train!” One good workout is such a small part of the day – you can find the time. I’ve never been a “morning person” but, with family and work commitments, that’s the most convenient time for me to train. I get up at 5.30am, do a PT session as soon as the gym opens and I’m back home by 7am. I start the day with a feeling of achievement, and I don’t feel guilty about going to the gym instead of spending time with my kids, like I would if I went at night. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? The beauty of CrossFit-style training is that it is constantly varied. Every session is different, and I never know what I’ll be doing that day until I get to the gym. But I do love the Olympic lifts.

life & style

How does fitness feature in your life? When I think back just a few years, I don’t even recognise the person I have become. I was overweight, tired all the time and worst of all, I was a hypocrite. I constantly told my two daughters how important it was to live a healthy, active lifestyle but I was not setting a good example for them. I was struggling physically but I didn’t realise how much that struggle had negatively impacted on every single aspect of my life. My husband and I knew we had to make dramatic changes to our lifestyle. Our girls did gymnastics at the YMCA, so we took advantage of the family membership we had never bothered to use and my husband started doing group training sessions (“Sweat”) three times a week. He absolutely loved it but I hadn’t done any kind of exercise for years and didn’t think I could keep up, so I signed up for personal training instead. It was the best decision I have ever made. Two years later, we are both infinitely happier, healthier and in the best shape of our lives!

19

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? I’m surrounded by inspiring people! My trainer is Justine Beath, one of Australia’s top CrossFit athletes. I see how dedicated she is to her own training.

Put away anti-germ wipes and sprays DAVID STEIN Owner & Manager of Fitec david@ fitec.com.au

Small and frequent stimuli can keep the body growing and adapting

WW11781

Friday 19 September 2014 the western weekender • west life

If you ever get to go to a nice, open farm and spend some time breathing in the fresh air you’ll know how it makes your lungs feel like they had a spring clean out. Maybe it isn’t just because of less pollution but also what is in the air itself. I read an interesting study that said sleeping on animal skin may reduce a baby’s risk of developing asthma. Scientists believe germs in the hide and fur prime the immune system not to trigger allergies. The findings come from a study of 2,441 healthy German babies whose progress was monitored until the age of 10. More than half slept on animal skin during their first three months of life. They were 79 per cent less likely to develop asthma by six years of age than children not exposed to animal skin. The results, presented at the European Respiratory Society’s International Congress in Munich, lend support to the ‘hygiene hypothesis’ that suggests too much cleanliness early in life can increase susceptibility to allergies. Lead researcher Dr Christina Tischer, said the results supported earlier research. “Previous studies have suggested that microbes found in rural settings can protect from asthma. An animal skin might also be a reservoir for various kinds of microbes, following similar mechanisms as has been observed in rural environments,” she said. When it seems like every preschool has lists of what can’t be brought into school due to allergies, this research shows that the human body is an incredible machine that has an extraordinary ability to adapt to anything it experiences. Lift heavy weight and it builds stronger muscle; get a cold and you build an increased immune system. Small, frequent stimuli can keep the body growing and adapting. So let the kids play with the dog, even in the mud or the dirt. Put away the anti-bacterial wipes and soaps and sprays that we all seem so obsessed with. Let their immune system learn how to deal with every day germs and the like and they will have a more robust, healthy body for it.

Daily injections can be used to treat diabetes in your family pet

VET

VIEW FROM ABOVE

Managing your pet’s case of diabetes

Jesus was no ordinary human being

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease in dogs and cats. This disease is most common in animals over six years of age but younger animals can also be affected. The pancreas is a small organ near the stomach that has two important roles – to produce enzymes necessary for good nutrition and also produces a hormone called insulin that regulates blood sugar. Diabetes occurs when the cells that produce insulin fail and blood sugar is not adequately regulated in the body. Why is insulin so important? Glucose is the main energy source for the body and insulin is the key that makes glucose available for energy. Initially, dogs who do not metabolise enough sugar will have an increased appetite and increased thirst. In the later stages, the body starts to metabolise its fat stores and this causes weight loss and makes the dog feel sick. The early signs of diabetes are frequent urinating, drinking lots of water, increased appetite and unexplained weight loss. In the more advanced stages of the disease, animals may develop a loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration and weakness. These more worrying signs are a result of fat metabolism in the body that produces a by-product called ketones. These ketones make the blood acidic and make the animal feel very ill. How is diabetes diagnosed? Diagnosis generally involves blood and urine testing. It is important to do this as other diseases can also cause increased appetite and thirst and need to be ruled out. Can diabetes be treated in pets? YES! Just like in humans, dietary control and daily injections of insulin can regulate diabetic dogs and cats. Insulin requirements need to be individually tailored for each animal as each has different needs. Refinements in doses are made after re-checks and most animals go on to live long and happy lives. The initial treatment can be challenging as sometimes there are complicating factors such as infections. However, once these are controlled, most animals are stable and happy. It can be daunting to learn how to inject your pet but it’s easier than you think and most animals barely notice the tiny needles used to administer the insulin.

For 2,000 years men and women all over the world have been convinced that Jesus was more than an ordinary person. Some extraordinary things have been said about Jesus. As we carefully reflect on what has been said, our appreciation of Jesus will grow. We begin to see that not only is Jesus unique, he is someone that we cannot ignore. Consider for example, these significant words from the Apostle Paul in the Bible’s New Testament book of Colossians; “He is the image of the invisible God... For by him all things were created... in him all things hold together... he is... the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” Jesus is more than ordinary! Jesus is God come among us. To know Jesus is to know God. Jesus is the one who created all things. He has authority over all things and he sustains all things. The supremacy and magnificence of Jesus is breathtaking. However, it is even more magnificent, when you consider that this very same Jesus came to earth, lived among us and then through giving his life on the cross and three days later rising from the dead, how he opened the door for all people to have the opportunity to be reconciled with God! What a gift – peace with God! No wonder Christian people throughout the centuries have celebrated and rejoiced in him. Today, may you know this peace and joy for yourself.

Low prices and a variety of styles make H&M so popular

It’s official: global fashion retail giant H&M has announced two Sydney locations that are set to become the company’s second and third Australian stores. The rumour mill has been buzzing in the months since the opening of the first Australian H&M in Melbourne earlier this year but until earlier this month, the Sydney location remained a mystery to shopaholics. It was announced that the Macquarie Centre in North Ryde is to get the first of Sydney’s H&M stores – it’ll be launched on October 16 – and next year, Pitt Street Mall’s ‘The Glasshouse’ will become the second, to open in late 2015. “We are excited to finally be able to announce our expansion in the Australian market with the offer of not only one, but two amazing H&M stores located in Sydney,” said Hans Andersson, Australian Country Manager for H&M. “Both the Sydney City and Macquarie Centre stores will encapsulate the unique retail shopping experience that is H&M and we are looking forward to connecting further with our customers with our wide assortment offering.” You might remember from a previous column how frustrated I was that the first of the company’s Australian stores went to Melbourne. I was so frustrated and so keen to shop H&M fashions that I even considered jumping on a plane to get down there and let my shopping instincts take over. But I didn’t, I stuck it out and now I feel like I am being rewarded with two special stores of my own. The low prices, the variety and the sheer amount of clothes to suit all different styles found at H&M are seconded by none. Opening first is the Macquarie Centre store, which will span over two levels and will showcase apparel, underwear and accessories for men, women and kids. Not that I have actually been there, but the Macquarie Centre seems like an odd choice of location to launch the brand in Sydney, especially given that it is a fair distance from the CBD and in my opinion is a little hard to get to. With the opening, H&M will launch their Australian Summer Collection, which is set to have all the summer holiday essentials down pat. I simply cannot wait!

weird, wacky and wondrous travel stories

This terminal, just one of four at Dubai’s existing airport, will be swamped in size by three at the city’s new airport capable of handling 100 Airbus A380 double-decker aircraft at the one time. Photo: Middle East Aviation News If you have trouble navigating your way around international airports now, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ll maybe need a personal GPS and a cut-lunch to find your way around a new airport being planned for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Because it will be the biggest airport in the world, with no fewer than five parallel runways spaced 800m apart so all can be used at the same time, and with the existing Dubai International Airport next to it, it will mean a total airport complex roughly 25 times the size of Sydney’s Kingsford Smith. With three terminal buildings able to handle 120-million passengers a year by

2020, and 160-million a year by 2030, one terminal of the new Dubai complex will be reserved exclusively for the flights of the UAE’s home-carrier Emirates, another for other major international carriers, and the third for low-cost carriers. And while it will be able to handle passengers coming off or getting onto up to 100 Airbus A380 double-decker aircraft at the one time – that’s over 50,000 travellers – the new airport’s planners and local Immigration and Customs authorities are already working together on how to make arriving and departing the new complex as hasslefree and as speedy as possible.

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

Penrith residents express their gratitude to NSW’s second longest serving Governor ith Her Excellency Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir retiring on Wednesday, October 1, the time to thank her for her service has arrived. She has been awarded the Centenary

W

Medal, and was made this year a Dame of the Order of Australia. Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, is calling on the local community to pay tribute to the retiring Governor in the weeks before she moves on by signing a tribute

Thanking you

book that has been set up at the Penrith Electorate Office (510 – 534 High Street, Penrith), at NSW Parliament House and online at www.nsw.gov.au. “Dame Bashir is the second longest serving Governor of New South Wales in our 226 year history having served since 2001. Dame Bashir is truly the People’s Governor and a remarkable Australian,” Mr Ayres said. “I also pay particular tribute to Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE for all his tireless work alongside Dame Bashir over the years.” Dame Bashir has visited the local area a number of times during her time as Governor and has been present at a number of special events in Penrith. One of her more recent visits was to officially re-dedicate Memory Park in the heart of Penrith to the people of Penrith in memory of their ancestors who fought in various overseas conflicts. This weekend is the last opportunity that local residents will have to access the tribute book, before it is made unavailable after Sunday, September 21. “I encourage everyone in the Penrith community to pay their personal tribute to a remarkable individual who has served this State with distinction, dignity, humility and respect,” Mr Ayres said. Mr Ayres was representing the Penrith community in NSW Parliament last week when the Governor gave her final address.

With high pollen counts expected over the next few days, NSW Ambulance is urging hayfever, allergy and asthma sufferers to take precautions as their conditions may flare up. “In spring we often see an increase in people suffering from asthma and allergic rhinitis, often known as hay fever, as a result of the increase of pollen in the air and changes in humidity,” said NSW Ambulance Inspector Norm Spalding. “We find that people don’t realise they are having a severe attack until their symptoms are quite serious.” Asthma is a dangerous condition which results in a chronic inflammation of the airways. This inflammation causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing, particularly at night or in the early morning. An asthma attack can prove fatal in minutes. “It is always important, regardless of how you are feeling when you first get up in the morning, to carry your medication with you at all times,” he said. If you suffer a severe attack, call Triple Zero (000).

Chocolate wheel, games, face painting and plenty of stalls to shop at!

Some of the activities include music therapy and purchasing Christmas presents for the residents who are unable to be with their families over the Christmas holiday period. The local Lions Club is providing a chocolate wheel with vouchers for local businesses and restaurants, a beauty stall and a local chemist offering ear piercing. There will also be stalls, face painting, games, sausage sizzles and prizes to be won. The fete will be held on the grounds of Edinglassie Village at 1-3 Emerald Street, Emu Plains on Saturday, September 20. Be sure to drop by between 8.30am and 1pm to be involved in this fun day out.

Imagine a world without factory farming... You would never lock your dog inside a tiny cage and deprive her of all the things that bring her joy and quality of life. Pigs are every bit as intelligent and social as our canine friends, yet they and other animals suffer intense confinement, stress, and surgical procedures without pain relief behind the closed doors of factory farms. Our choices can set them free. By refusing factory-farmed, consuming fewer animal products, or going meat-free, you can help create a kinder world for animals.
