SPECIAL REPORT

Lions Clubs looking for young cubs to join the ranks Penrith has a strong tradition of service clubs, but new members are desperately needed if the spirit of community service is to be kept alive in the next generation

KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

hough Charlie Kennaway and Barry Leavett-Brown are members of different service clubs, they both share a common woe. They sit before me, struggling to come up with a word to describe just how desperately their clubs need members, just how much the community will suffer if clubs like theirs are forced to close. But no word is strong enough. “We are stretching ourselves too bloody thin. We are desperate, desperate for people to help out,” Mr Kennaway said. For many years membership in local service clubs like Rotary and the Lions Club has been dwindling, as members who once joined in their twenties have passed away or are forced to leave because age has left them unable to assist their fellow members.

The legacy of these clubs however is not passed on, as the younger generations in today’s society choose themselves over helping out others. It is the community that bears the brunt, that feels the hurt when clubs like Cambridge Park Lions Club, of which Mr Kennaway is a member, are forced to reduce their assistance, whether it be monetary or by physically running a barbecue or mowing a lawn, because they just don’t have the manpower. “Locally, if we don’t get some more young, active members... we can’t.... I’ve already had to knock back barbecues at Bunnings because I can’t get members to help at it. We used to do two barbecues at Bunnings, they were worth about $900 each in donations that we would give back to the community,” Mr Kennaway said. “We can’t do it because we just don’t have the staff. I have to beg, borrow and steal people to come and help me. By missing out on that, the needy in this area are now missing out.”

With just 14 members, Mr Kennaway makes up around seven per cent of the Cambridge Park Lions Club and in today’s society, finding a service club with just a handful of members is the norm. Penrith Lions Club, for example, has 20 members on the books but according to Mr Leavett-Brown, 14 or less regularly attend meetings and not even all of those are able to help out. “The youngest one is 23, that’s one and one only and it is an exceptional case. He wanted to join Penrith because his grandfather was a charter member. At that stage he was only about 15 or 16 and wanted to join the club that his grandfather founded – it was unusual; you don’t normally get people down that age,” he said. Encouraging younger people to get involved in their clubs has been right at the top of the to-do list – behind supporting the needy in the community – of most service clubs in the area, with Penrith Rotary only recently inducting a local engineer as their youngest member.

Emu Plains Lions Club selling Christmas Trees to raise money for local charities Though a Leo Club would help the local Lions Clubs continue supporting the community, the adolescents and young adults who join are set to benefit too. “You would be surprised by how it sorts kids out, helps them to find their way. Just by watching or helping, they would learn things, which might give them a bit of a hand in sorting out their future,” Mr Leavett-Brown said.

“They will meet people, they will exchange, they will be able to talk to people. Quite a lot of students and young people are faced by an adult and will probably say hello, but that’s it.” And the experience the students get through supporting the community, according to the Clubs, will instil values in the children that they may not get elsewhere.

On Saturday, August 30, the Cambridge Park Lions Club are holding a membership drive at St Marys Village Centre to attract new residents, and hope to be handing out information about the Leo Club to young families too. The following month, they are planning to introduce the idea to local schools, teachers and P&C members at a special dinner meeting.

special report

Emu Plains Lions Club, Penrith Lions Club, Cambridge Park Lions Club and Mt Druitt Lions Club regularly hold membership drives, but have recently come up with an idea that could change the way their clubs work forever. Leo Clubs are sponsored affiliations of Lions Clubs that take people from 12-years-old to 23-years-old and introduce them to volunteering and supporting the community. Until recently, there had never even been talk of starting one up in Penrith but desperate times call for desperate measures and the local Lions Clubs think this may be their only way of keeping their clubs alive. “Leos is one of the things we are clutching at. We don’t know if we can afford it, and maybe we can’t but we have to see what the interest is first. If the interest is there, then I have every intention of finding people to see if they will sponsor a Leos Club locally,” Mr Kennaway said. “It could also help us expand into some other projects. We will be able to help someone that needs their lawns cut or garden worked on, where now, we are not fit to do it.” “The other week there was a family that lost their mother, father and other family members. We could have done something to help them around the house, if we had the man power. We don’t have the man power though. If we had more of the younger manpower, we could do all these sorts of things,” he said. Mr Leavett-Brown agreed. “They will give us that leeway to do extra jobs. Someone comes along and asks us to do things, and it takes man power, sometimes we have to say sorry,” he said.

FEATURE STORY

Brand’s proud of collection of “little bits and pieces” It can be hard to find inspiration for new songs, but Adam Brand has been keeping a few in his back pocket for a rainy day. Now, they are on his new album and Rooty Hill audiences will get to hear them live!

T

alking to Adam Brand about his new album ‘My Side of the Street’ you can tell that the process of writing and recording was a particularly enjoyable one for the successful country singer. KATE REID @kate_reid6

“I went to the studio and I didn’t play by any rules I just played and recorded the stuff how I wanted to and without any thoughts of record companies or commercial reasons and things like that,” Brand said. “There was no one I had to please apart from myself in the studio. So at the end of the day if you feel really happy and comfortable with what you’ve got then it’s so much easier to go out and sing the songs . “And I think people can see that they’re getting something that’s true to yourself and not just recorded for ‘oh we need this type of song’ or ‘ we have to have this’.” ‘My Side of the Street’ – Brand’s 10th studio album – showcases his new found musical freedom and sees the singer once again collaborating with producer Craig Porteils. The 13 track album features a guest appearance by Aussie country songstress Jasmine Rae and a cover of Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs’ hit song ‘Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy’. It’s an album that Brand admits has come about after years of gathering inspiration. “When you release your first album it’s your very first so you’ve got all your life you’ve lived right up until that point and everything goes into that album,” he explained. “The next album you release you’ve got 18 months from the last one so you’ve kind of got to cram it almost. “So I guess with this album it feels like there’s a lot of songs on here that I really believe in strongly and I feel like I’ve sort of been picking up little pieces my whole life that have all sort of ended up at the end of this path and that have got into this album. “Now I’m not saying this is the end of my journey – I hope not anyway – but you know it kind of feels like it’s been a long time coming, a lot of bits and pieces have gone into this album. “For about three years there were songs that I sort of thought, I thought to myself, ‘one day I’m going to record these when the right time comes,’ so I had a bunch of those sort of songs sitting in the back pocket... and then [fast forward] to this album and it just seemed the right time for a lot of them.” The lead single from the album ‘What Your Love Looks Like’ is a country/rock ballad full of romantic imagery.

The next album you release you’ve got 18 months so you have to cram it

The video for the track was filmed at some well known Sydney locations including the beautiful Curzon Hall in Marsfield. “It certainly was one of the most involved videos I’ve done,” said Brand. Though the country star admits he enjoys all aspect of being a musician, at the end of the day when it comes to a choice between writing/recording and heading out on the road – it’s the latter that wins out every time. “For a performer, being on stage singing your songs is the ultimate,” he said. “I’ve been off the road for the last seven months I guess you could say, so you kind of get itchy feet, you’re ready to get back out there and play again.” Local audiences will have the chance to experience Brand’s love of the stage – along with tracks from the new album – when the ‘My Side of The Street’ tour comes to Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, September 20. It’s a place that Brand is very familiar with. The country music star even recorded his live DVD ‘Built For Speed’ at the venue in 2003.

“Well Rooty Hill’s just an awesome venue and I’ve been playing there for years so it’s kind of like my home, my home gig in Sydney, and it’s always a fun night,” he said. Looking back over a career that has spawned five gold, and three platinum albums, an ARIA Top 5 album, several ARIA nominations for Best Country Album, as well as 12 Golden Guitars, Brand still has a few projects that stand out in such a successful and long lived career. “I suppose one in particular would be ‘The ANZAC’, then there’s songs like ‘Hell of a Ride’, ‘It’s Gonna Be Ok’ and ‘Good Things in Life’ so there’s a few songs in there obviously that mark milestones, not only in my career but also in my life,” he said. “So those songs – I’m not sure if being proud of them is the right word – but just being pivotal points in my life.” Adam Brand will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, September 20 at 8pm. Tickets are $30-$35. To book online visit www.totalcountry.com.au or for more information call 9625 5500.

He is well known for his extraordinary cello performances once conducted in Jenolan Caves. “The extraordinary acoustics of the Gingerbread House building, which was previously a church, projects the music incredibly throughout,’’ said Gingerbread House owner Jodie Van Der Velden. “With a chocolate gift to take home, the night ends sweet.’’ This will be the first concert in the series with concerts to come on Friday, September 26, Wednesday, October 29 and Saturday, November 22. Blue Mountains Lithgow and Oberon Tourism chairman Daniel Myles said: “You really shouldn’t need an excuse to visit the Gingerbread House or Josophan’s in Leura Mall – or the Blue Mountains region for that matter, but if you do this is a pretty sweet lure”. Slow burning album heats up with duo’s tour

STEPHEN BISSET

With their brilliant 2013 album ‘Farewell Fitzroy’ still kicking some pretty serious goals around the traps, Busby Marou are hitting the road on the back of their latest single ‘My Second Mistake’. “It has been a pretty full-on year so far,” Jeremy Marou said. “The James Blunt tour was amazing, getting to play to such big crowds and we also managed to get a gold record for our first album [self-titled]. It’s been a bit of a slow burn given that it’s been out for a couple of years, but it’s really not that easy to get a gold record, especially with all of the piracy going on – so we’re so chuffed with that one. It’s definitely something to show the grandkids.” Marou said the latest single ‘My Second

Mistake’ – an irresistibly playful tune about fidelity, growing up, and a healthy dose of Catholic guilt – was one of his favourite tracks on ‘Farewell Fitzroy’. “It was just one of those songs that, when we demo-ed it, we knew that it definitely had legs. When we recorded the album over in Nashville we were lucky enough to have some amazing session players including Al Perkins who played some pedal steel on ‘My Second Mistake’. Al has worked with people like The Rolling Stones and Emmylou Harris so just being able to watch him do his thing in the studio was amazing enough.” While there is obviously still plenty of life left in ‘Farewell Fitzroy’ yet, Marou said that he and Tom were keen to start working on album number three. “Time really has gone so quickly for us lately – it doesn’t really feel like two years since the first album,” he said. “The plan is to release another single and then head out on the road again for a bit of a duo tour and then we’ll look at recording again.” Busby Marou will be performing at the Collector Hotel in Parramatta on Thursday, August 21 at 7pm. Tickets are $25 at the door. See www.collectorhotel.com.au.

The exhibit will showcase contemporary weaving and sculpture that celebrates the Nepean and Lachlan Rivers. The works have been created by Penrith-based artist Bronwyn Berman and Condobolin based Wiradjuri weaver, Bev Coe, who bring together an Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal perspective on the ideas of identity, place and cultured memory. The exhibition is one aspect of the larger ‘River to River’ project that started in 2012, which brings together Penrith and Lachlan Shire artists and communities. ‘River to River’ will run from Saturday, August 30 until Sunday, November 16 at the Penrith Regional Gallery. What next for duo Hamish and Andy So I got the shock of my life last week when I learnt A&E was producing a local version of one of my favourite ever shows ‘Pawn Stars’. Yes, from 2015 there will be a ‘Pawn Stars Australia’ to watch, which will involve Sydney pawn shop franchise Happy Hockers. I guess we’ll see how it goes but if it’s anything like ‘Pawn Stars UK’, we could be in trouble.

Still on ‘Pawn Stars Australia’ and the reason while I’m so unsure about it is that the US version is all about the history of the item. Let’s be honest, America has a much richer history than Australia. We only became a Federation in 1901! I mean how much is a signed Michael Clarke cricket bat worth? I don’t know if there will be the level of content to match the show.

Last week’s finale of ‘Gap Year’ means Hamish and Andy are free from Nine and are virtually free to do whatever they like. Last Tuesday’s final episode saw more than a million viewers tune in with the funny duo now thinking long and hard what to do next.

There’s no doubt Nine would still want to re-sign Hamish and Andy for more television duties considering how incredibly popular ‘Gap Year’ has been over the years. For me, I’d love to see them come back for more but there is talk live TV could be on the cards.

There’s rumours swirling that Mike Munroe and his big red ‘This Is Your Life’ book could be returning to our screens in the near future. Munroe previously hosted the hit show for many years whilst at Nine. These days he works at Channel Ten and is understood to be mulling the idea.

Finally, after initially hating it I ended up loving ‘The Voice Kids’, which sadly wrapped up last Sunday on Nine. I wasn’t quite sure about it at first but after the first few episodes I was hooked. Despite the constant backlash, I honestly thought the kids were incredibly talented.

While everyone’s favourite green frog is locked away Constantine, the world’s best criminal, impersonates him with the help of his evil sidekick Dominic, played by Ricky Gervais. But never fear, Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon, played by Ty Burrell (star of ‘Modern Family’), is on the case to stop Constantine from wrecking havoc. This is a hilarious and fun family movie packed with new songs and cameos from dozens of stars.

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY RATED PG Starring: Helen Mirren and Manish Dayal Now screening at Hoyts Penrith

SHIHAD FVEY Out Now

‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’ will have food fanatics salivating. The story is set in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, a village located in the south of France. Here we find Madame Mallory, played by Helen Mirren, who runs the Michelin starred restaurant Le Saule Pleureur. Things are sent into a spin when the Kadam family move from India to the small village and open an Indian restaurant called Maison Mumbai just across the road. Madame Mallory is not the warmest of characters and hence is not happy with her new neighbours. What results is a battle between the competing businesses. In the process Madame Mallory discovers that Chef Hassan Kadam, played by Manish Dayal has a flare for combining the traditional French flavours found at Le Saule Pleureur with the cuisine of his home country. This discovery sees Hassan go from rival to student. ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’ shows the power of food in helping to bring together people from different backgrounds, breaking down barriers and emphasising the common ground we share with those around us.

Kiwi alt-rockers Shihad are back with their 10th album ‘FVEY’. It’s been four years since the band’s last album, 2010’s ‘Ignite’ and this new release – referred to as ‘five eyes’ – sees the band in particularly fine form. Shihad have been together since 1988 but time has clearly not dampened their talent. The first single ‘Think You’re So Free’ is ballsy and commanding. There’s an obvious aggression in the lyrics as lead singer Jon Toogood asks the question, ‘when do you think we’ll wake up’. It’s clear that even after more than two decades the band still has plenty to say, and they’re going to make sure people listen up. The album was produced by Jaz Coleman, frontman for the English post-punk band The Killing Joke. Coleman was also responsible for producing the band’s debut album, 1993’s ‘Churn’. His control and energy has certainly been a positive influence on Shihad, helping them to create a killer rock album. With tracks including ‘The Big Lie’, ‘Model Citizen’ and ‘Wasted in the West’ there is a clear political tone to the album. It’s loud, it’s in your face and it doesn’t shy away from getting the band’s message across.

The next instalment of the Risen series is here and it’s gone back to the franchise’s roots. While ‘Risen 2: Dark Waters’ took on a pirate theme RISEN 3: TITAN ‘Risen 3: Titan Lords’ will revive the medieval LORDS RATED MA setting of the first game in the series. The action role-playing game sees the soul of a young XBOX 360, PS3, warrior stolen by the Titan Lords, sending him PC on a quest to take back what is his and possibly save the world. The game gives players the chance to take the character’s destiny into

their own hands, with the freedom to choose your quest or explore your surroundings. How you tackle the quests will determine the final outcome. You’ll also have the benefit of crystal magic, which gives you access to lightning, ice and fire when engaged in combat. As you make your way through the game there’s the option of aligning yourself with one of three guilds. Ultimately this medieval adventure puts control in the player’s hands.

e were reminded the other day of how the Hunter Valley’s Mistletoe Wines was somewhat scorned by some fellow Hunter makers and not the odd cellar door visitor too, when back in the late 1990’s the company launched a series of Semillons that had varying degrees of sweetness – much like Germany does its Rieslings. These ranged from a quite dry The Reserve Semillon to an off-dry Home Vineyard and a Silvereye Semillon that was close to Mosel-like sweet. And while critics had a field day then, it’s a different matter today: many other Hunter makers now also make sweeter-style Semillons, including some of those original critics. Owners, Ken and Gwen Sloan and their Winemaker, Nick Paterson say this has achieved one of their original goals: to have those who initially lean towards sweeter wines try these sweeter Hunter Semillons, and as their palates mature, progress to Mistletoe’s (and the Hunter’s generally) drier-style Semillons. We recently tried all three Mistletoes and loved the off-dry 2013 Home Vineyard Semillon. It’s a wine with wonderful lemon and grapefruit flavours and a perfect harmony between sweetness and crisp acidity, to us a perfect drop at $22 with all manner of seafoods. One to note: The other day we mentioned enjoying the occasional “cleansing ale” to a beer-loving mate who also happens to be a long-time fan of TV show, ‘The Simpsons’ – and to our surprise he offered us Homer’s favourite drop, a Duff Beer, which we didn’t even know existed. USA-made, it now sells here through BWS and Dan Murphy’s at $17 for a six pack of 355ml cans.

Why do we splash out on brand names? KATHERINE TWEED

life & style

Carrying a designer bag on your arm, wearing those red-soled Louboutins or a pair of Chanel earrings gives a person the automatic appearance of wealth and success. Though we might deny it, wealth and success are two things desired by most people so to own something that makes you feel or look like you’ve made it is something to be worked towards. In saying that, part of me disagrees. I am fascinated with all things designer because I find them beautiful. Yes, they are ridiculously expensive and part of that cost can be attributed to the label but there is quality there as well; in fact many designer products are hand made. Plus, if you are buying something that has been designed by some of the most experienced, influential people in the industry, that is something to be proud of. These people and those who take up their work after them, keeping the label in tact, have worked harder than we could ever imagine to create and keep what they have built. To have the opportunity to wear their work is an honour.

katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

Hand made items are as much an artwork as they are a piece of fashion

These days, you can pick up a decent looking faux-leather handbag for under $20 or even under $10. So with prices so cheap, why are we still tempted to spend hundreds on a designer label? The lure of designer handbags is second to none and I have certainly felt the pressure myself but I have been able to hold myself back, and my wallet has thanked me for it. But I have a couple of girlfriends who aren’t so restrained. Both just returned from separate European holidays; one spent a few weeks in Italy followed by a stint in Croatia, while the other toured through more than five European countries. Before leaving, I asked both girls if they were going to buy anything designer – after all, if you are going to buy designer, Europe is the place to do it. My first friend mentioned that she might but she wasn’t going to go out looking for anything in particular and the other had already decided on a specific brand and style . Both returned home with the same Louis Vuitton handbag on their arms – the first friend having bought it on her second day and the other toward the end of her trip. Naturally, I had to inspect their new investments and was in awe. I am not joking when I say that I may have fallen in love and even found myself stroking the soft leather without even realising it. But why? If they had come home with handbags that looked similar but didn’t carry that designer name, would I have been impressed? Would I have cradled them in my arms like a child? Would I have felt as immensely jealous as I do now? Would I have gone home and opened a savings account in order for me to purchase that Hermes Birkin bag that I’ve been admiring for years? I doubt it. This same lure applies to designer clothing, shoes and other accessories – seriously people, we can buy similar looking items at K-mart and though I can’t vouch for the quality, it is the look we are after, isn’t it? Or is it the name? My vote is that it is all in the name.

Size colour and clarity are just some of the factors that determine a diamond’s price

WW10576

My five top tips when buying diamonds So you’ve decided to start shopping for diamonds, congratulations! You begin by researching diamond grades online, and then venture into a few stores. If you haven’t done this before then it can seem overwhelming and somewhat scary! Apart from the design itself the task of selecting a diamond can be a daunting one. Never fear, I’m here to help you through it guys! Tip 1. Buy from someone that you feel comfortable with. This is often a large purchase and you need to have confidence in the person and company that you are buying from. We have touched on this before in regards to buying online versus in store, and face to face always wins hands down. Tip 2. Heavier Carat weight doesn’t necessarily mean bigger in size. You many be offered a 1.00ct diamond for an amazing price but does it spread like a 1.00ct diamond should for optimal sparkle? Compare a few stones to get a real feel for size. Tip 3. Go for a laboratory certified stone. But not just any certificate! The most highly regarded certificates in the industry are considered to be from GIA. There are many inferior grading laboratories in operation and the comparison in diamond grades from one to another can vary as much as two or three grades, depending on what lab has graded the stone. This means that an inferior or ‘okay’ stone can be documented as something much better than it actually is. No wonder consumers are confused. Tip 4. As a general rule opt for colour over clarity. In general the human eye can detect colour in a diamond before we see the impurities, which is why when I’m asked about colour versus clarity I generally advise to aim higher in colour and go for a moderate clarity with inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye or affect the brilliance of the stone. Again, compare a few diamonds next to each other to get a good feel for what you can see and what you can’t. Tip 5. If it sounds too good to be true it normally is, and this is why it’s so important to buy from someone that you trust. There are many factors at play that comprise the beauty and price of a diamond. Not only the size, colour, and clarity. How about the measurements, cut, shape, location of inclusions and florescence? Please be sure to do your homework! You can email me at matthew@yorkjewellers.com.au.

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Are you a Piscean procrastinator? Or are you living in a fantasy world? This week’s Mercury/Neptune opposition heightens creativity and spirituality, but it also blunts your reality radar and makes you more susceptible to self-delusion. On Thursday and Friday, Mercury encourages you to tackle personal problems pronto.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Attached Aquarians, the stars encourage you to make a bold romantic gesture that knocks your partner off their feet. Are you unhappily single? Love is in the air this week, as Venus and Jupiter join forces in your relationship zone. So prepare to capitalize on a big romantic opportunity with a lusty Libran or sexy Sagittarian.

This week impulsive Mars and Uranus boost your ‘devil-maycare’ attitude, but too much hot-headed hastiness could lead to an argument or accident. Rams are always butting in with advice but don’t offer help unless you are asked. If you try to convert others to your point of view, you’ll meet with resistance from all directions. Try fixing problems, rather than creating them.

Venus and Jupiter boost your Cat charisma, so stop trying to impress everyone and just have the confidence to be yourself… warts and all. Be inspired by birthday great Coco Chanel: “How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone.” When it comes to contracts and financial deals, do your research.

Star predictions for the week beginning August 17

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Don’t make major mountains out of minor molehills, and waste precious time worrying about inconsequential problems this week. Things should run reasonably smoothly and, if there are complications, then clear communication will help you sail through any temporary turbulence.

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Group activities are favoured early in the week, and you can expect an easy flow of feelings between you and loved ones. Single Librans, crank up your computer because love is waiting online. Have you been pulling your weight around the house? With Pluto in your home zone, the more you resist domestic responsibilities, the more problems you’ll have with housemates.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Are you having money hassles? Some lucky Bulls will be thrown a financial life-line by a generous family member. Others will have to think of creative ways to increase cash flow and boost dwindling funds. And are you being stubborn about an ongoing domestic matter? This week’s stars encourage you to solve the problem.

The more proactive you are professionally, the more successful you’ll be. Looking for work? Think outside the square and find creative ways to present yourself. Thursday’s stars increase your frustration levels and your control-freak tendencies. Friday is the best day to have a deep and meaningful conversation with someone special.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

If you spread misleading information on Tuesday, you could find yourself in trouble with a worried work colleague or a furious family member. Friday should be fabulous when the Mercury/Pluto trine focuses your quicksilver mind and deepens your concentration. Your powers of persuasion are also high.

Hold onto your seat Sagittarius! The week begins well, as the Venus/Jupiter hook-up highlights social shenanigans and romantic hijinks. Travel and education are also favoured as you start a study course; extend your international connections; or plan a heavenly holiday. Don’t rush business and financial matters on Friday.

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

This week is complicated Crabs! Friendships and finances are highlighted but steer clear of power plays and mind games. Are you in a career rut? Is a change of approach needed at work? If you shift the stale old energy and get fresh ideas moving, it will lead to an exciting new professional chapter.

The big lesson to learn this week is how to delegate. No one (not even a capable, conscientious Capricorn) is indispensable! And others are happy to step in and help if you give them the chance. Friday’s marvellous Mercury/Pluto trine sees you focus on the big picture, without obsessing too much.

let your money go to waste on things that you don’t actually use

Are you throwing away your money? Do you toil away at work all day only to throw your hardearned pay check in the rubbish bin each month? Of course not, we hear you exclaim – that’s ridiculous! Well, it may sound absurd to you now, but recent research from multinational price comparison website Moneysupermarket has shown a surprising number of people are doing just that. Whether it’s a contract for a broken or lost phone, a magazine subscription delivered to an old address or a gym membership ticking over unused, apathy towards direct debits is allowing more than AUS$23 billion to be wasted each year. Rather than letting your money disappear down the drain, it is important to understand how to avoid this wasteful behaviour. To help, here are three ways you could be throwing away your hard-earned cash and not even realising it: Forgetting to cancel direct debits When you sign up for a wine-of-the-month delivery, or decide to get fit and purchase an ongoing gym membership, it’s important to keep track of these payments to ensure nothing slips under the radar. Review your online banking account regularly and check up on what money is leaving your account each month. If you find you’re no longer interested in lifting weights at your local gym, cancel your membership! Failing to take out insurance Sometimes you have to spend money to save money. A recent report conducted by Galaxy Research found that Australians who fail to take out travel insurance before jetting off on holiday find themselves an average of $850 out of pocket when misfortune occurs. This entirely preventable expense is usually caused by unexpected medical costs, lost luggage and theft. Take out cover to protect your hard-earned cash so you can spend it on more important things! Unused gift cards Have you ever received a gift card then left it forgotten in your wallet, until one day you pull it out only to discover it has expired? It’s a common occurrence in Australia, resulting in approximately $360 million in money waste, according to financial advice firm Mozo. Instead of burying unwanted gift cards, you could consider exchanging the voucher for cash from a family member or friend.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

DANIEL RIVET Dream big and keep your goal in mind

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Forget miracle diets and quick fixes, they don’t work in the long run. Focus on a healthy plan that you can stick to and be consistent. Don’t beat yourself up if you have a bad day or don’t see results straight away. 2. When you start an exercise program pick an activity you enjoy doing so you are more likely to stick with it. Record your progress as seeing results motivates you to keep going and improve. 3. Exercise and healthy eating go together, you will not get great results by only focusing on one aspect of a healthy lifestyle.

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I enjoy doing martial arts, as it gives you great confidence, self control and self awareness. It is excellent for strength, flexibility and endurance. It is very motivating as you are always progressing and learning new skills every day.

A daily ‘must do’? Put your mobile phone away for an hour and go for a nice walk outside and relax. Biggest health/fitness misconception? If you’re physically fit, it doesn’t matter what you eat. Wrong. If you develop bad eating habits it will stay with you for life; prevention is the best cure. What do you consider the biggest benefit of

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? I stay motivated because I am willing to do and give my absolute all in my sport. I strive for results and know if I want to follow my dream it’s not going to come easy, it’s going to be full of heartache as nothing comes easy in life. To be at the top, no matter what it is, you have to work hard every single day, as I believe if you do you become one per cent better every day. being fit and healthy? The biggest benefit of being fit and healthy is that it gives you good self esteem and confidence, you have lots of energy to try and experience new things and you can do and feel things that most people can’t.

How does fitness feature in your life? I started training in martial arts when I was just 10-years-old and from there I found a great love for the sport and knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I’ve been striving towards my dreams and goals ever since. I have competed in Judo, Brazilian Jujitsu, karate, boxing, kickboxing and in Muay Thai, but my real passion is MMA, which I can start competing in next year. Some of my achievements in Judo have been becoming national champion and representing Australia in the Australian Youth Olympics where I placed third. I currently have a 4-0 amateur boxing record and have won the WKBF amateur state title in both kickboxing and Mod Thai in the past year.

Both asbestos and smoking were considered safe until the truth was revealed

I was talking to a school parent about how great he thought wireless technology is, how the whole school is wireless now and how he has wireless throughout the house and can watch movies anywhere while he’s on the cordless phone. Even the newborn’s cot has a wireless sender unit next to the baby’s head. He knew all about the technology but seemed shocked when I asked if that was ideal for his kid’s health. I guess he thought you must just be a tree hugging hippie to believe all the rubbish that wireless might be dangerous. I wonder if he knew the world health organisation IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) classifies radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) as possibly carcinogenic to humans, which is called category 2B. Both tobacco and asbestos were category 2B for years. Schools used to have asbestos in them too. Both industries heavily funded ‘research’ and ‘experts’ to defend their products. The first peer reviewed study linking tobacco to cancer was published in 1939, but with the assistance of inept/corrupt politicians, unscrupulous medical people and a complicit media, the industry managed to obscure the evidence until the 1970s. The Interphone Study is often quoted to say phones are safe. This study was industry funded, excluded cellphone users under 30 years, classified “regular” use as one call a week and “heavy” use as a ridiculously low, 2.5 hours per week. Interestingly there are other independently-funded studies that show harm from EMF exposure. When did it become fine to saturate kids in a possibly carcinogenic substance, especially when there is a safer alternative like being hardwired, which provides faster and more reliable service anyway? I’m not an expert on EMF. I guess my choice is just made as a father, but my house has an old wired phone. If you want the internet you go into the study where the computer is plugged into the wall. I still have a mobile phone, which I generally keep up on a shelf away from where we tend to sit. It’s not that hard because I’m not willing to make a bet where my kids’ getting a brain tumour is a possible outcome... no matter how long the odds are.

Want an easy pet? Why not try hermit crabs!

Do you know why Jesus came to us?

Hermie and Harriott the hermit crabs are part of our menagerie at home. I must say out of the dogs, cats, ferrets, guinea pigs and pony they are the very easiest to care for. Hermit crabs have evolved to live on land and use an empty shell as a portable home as well as protection. Hermit crabs are great pets. They may not be cute and cuddly but are fun to play with. They are friendly, intelligent, odour free and very clean. Hermit crabs need an aquarium with a glass top. They need a humid environment to survive. The ground can be covered with pet litter, wood shavings or clean dry gravel. They are very social critters and it’s best to keep two or more. Hermit crabs also like to climb and exercise, so some driftwood is great or you are able to purchase different climbing equipment for them. The hermit crab comes from a tropical environment. They love to be kept between 25 and 30 degrees. The easiest way to heat them is through a heat mat that you place under the aquarium. Try not to let the temperature fall below 20 degrees. They are more active when warm. To keep the air humid make sure they have plenty of water. Hermit crabs are really easy to feed. You can purchase a specially formulated hermit crab food that has all their nutritional requirements. This can then be supplemented with treats such as corn flakes, shredded coconut, apple and other fruits. The other fun thing about hermit crabs is their shells. As they grow they will leave their old shell and find another larger one. You will need to leave a few spare shells lying around. It is always exciting when they find a new home.

Most of us have heard of the name of Jesus. But what is our understanding of who Jesus is and what he came to do? The Apostle Paul in the Bible says this; “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” In this powerful statement, we see that even though Jesus was God himself, he came to earth and humbled himself, serving all people and ultimately dying on a cross so that any person could have friendship with God. Because of Jesus’ faithful obedience, he was exalted to the highest place and given the name above every name. Significantly, at the end of all things, all people will bow before Jesus because he is Christ the Lord! What an extraordinary picture! And yet, it is true that any person can have friendship with this same Jesus as they humbly submit to him as the Lord of their life. But also imagine the difference in our world if every person did have same attitude as that of Jesus our Lord?

Young actors who’ve played the part of feisty langur monkeys in village stage shows in India are being employed by the government to act as langurs in capital New Delhi to scare-off red-faced macaque monkeys that have become a major violence and health problem in the city. Tens of thousands of macaques roam freely in New Delhi, brazenly stealing food from tables, shelves and even refrigerators in homes, shops and restaurants; and in one school yard recently slapped youngsters about their faces and bodies to make off with lunchtime food and drink. And so aggressive were five macaques

that attacked a terrified woman preparing dinner in her home last month, that police called to rescue her had to beat the animals off with bamboo poles. Even the capital’s Parliament House is not immune from attack, with the macaques snatching files from the hands of politicians and bureaucrats in offices and corridors in the belief they are food. Now with treatment for monkey bites second only to dog bites at New Delhi’s hospitals, the government has retained 40 young people to lope langur-like amongst the macaques, thrashing their arms and making the shrill sounds of angry langurs in the hope of scaring the little red-faced critters away.

Free program expanded Older women urged to have breast cancer screening conducted every two years omen over 70 are being encouraged to get screened for breast cancer after the age bracket for free screenings was recently expanded to include women aged over 70. As part of the 2013-14 Federal Budget, the Australian Government committed $55.7 million over four years to expand BreastScreen Australia’s target age range by five years, from women 50-69 years of age to women 50-74 years of age. This initiative will mean more than 220,000 additional screening services will be delivered throughout BreastScreen Australia over the next four years, detecting an estimated additional 600 breast

cancers each year. Women 70-74 years of age will be actively invited to attend free two-yearly screening mammograms through BreastScreen Australia. Women 40-49 years of age and 75 years of age and over are still eligible for free screening mammograms, however they will not receive an invitation to attend. Having regular mammograms through BreastScreen Australia is one of the best things you can do to detect breast cancer early, and improve your chance of survival. Breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related death in Australian women. The lifetime risk of women developing breast cancer before the age of 75 years is one in 11.

Memories of hit music show brought back to life Musical trio give the Joan a taste of 1960s Bandstand glory NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

hree of Australia’s wellloved, iconic recording and TV stars from the 1960s explode onto the stage at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre later this month for the fabulous Morning Melodies show – Memories of Bandstand. ‘Bandstand’ is without doubt one of the most popular shows ever to grace our television screens and is also responsible for introducing us to some of our favourite television stars of the 50s and 60s including the legendary Frankie Davidson, Lucky Starr and Warren Williams. ‘Bandstand’ was a hit Channel Nine music variety show, which launched in Australia in 1958 before sadly departing in 1972. It was hosted by beloved Nine newsreader Brian Henderson and featured

T

Lucky Starr loves performing for his fans many of Australia’s best-known artists at the time including Col Joye, Little Pattie, The Allen Brothers, Olivia Newton-John, The Bee Gees and of course the popular trio set to perform at the Joan.

Headlining the trio is Lucky Starr, who hit the Australian pop scene in a big way with his huge 1962 tongue-twisting mega hit ‘I’ve Been Everywhere’, where he name drops numerous Australian towns,

with many considering it an honour to have been included. Joining Starr on the Joan stage is Frankie Davidson who’s pretty much done it all in Australian showbiz. Not only has Davidson won a number of prestigious awards throughout his long and distinguished career but has even dabbled in a bit of acting from time to time. Completing the musical trio is none other than Warren Williams, who was a true pioneer of the Australia rock music landscape. Williams was a member of the popular group Warren Williams and the Squares who enjoyed huge success in the late 50s. The band broke up in 1960 with Williams forging a successful solo career. Here they are in all their glory ready to take audiences on the nostalgia trip of a lifetime with the music and songs of your favourite era. Get ready to ‘stomp’, ‘shout’ and have a memorable time when Memories of Bandstand hits the Joan on Wednesday, August 27. Tickets are $20 and include a delicious Devonshire morning tea at 10am with the show commencing at 11am. To book or for more information call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

“[Lower impact forms of exercise] can be easier on the body while still providing all the benefits of more vigorous physical activity. “For example, people who love to run or play tennis should try mixing up their exercise routine with different types of activities such as walking, cycling or swimming, to take the stress off their hip bones and joints.” “Mindfulness exercises such as yoga, tai chi or qigong are undeniably important as well.”

hysical activity is declining in seniors, according to Apia data, which suggests that almost half of over 50s are less active than they were five years ago. Though 77 per cent of seniors say they are committed to living a healthy lifestyle, around half have decreased their physical activity and 22 per cent admit they are very inactive. “Growing older shouldn’t mean growing inactive. People tend to think that as they age they no longer need to exercise as often as they did in their younger years; they may injure themselves while exercising if they are frail or weak; and only vigorous activities have any real health benefit. However this is simply not the case,” said Apia spokesperson David Skapinker. Australian health expert, Dr Ross Walker, said that physical activity can be modified to accommodate injuries or weakness. “To maintain a healthy and active lifestyle in your 50s and beyond, the key is to focus on changing the nature of what you do as you get older, instead of just reducing the amount of what you currently do,” he said.

ave you ever been to dinner with someone and then ‘boom’ out of nowhere they pull out their smartphone to see what’s happening on Facebook? It’s pretty annoying. Now imagine the same thing happening at a wedding. It’s the height of rudeness, for sure! These days more and more couples are taking a strong stance in the war against smartphones in wrong places by introducing ‘Unplugged Weddings’. If you don’t like the idea of guests attached to their phones throughout the ceremony or reception, consider making your big day an ‘Unplugged Wedding’. Provide a phone check at the door, similar to a coat check, or add a note to your invitation or ceremony program asking guests to refrain from taking photos, video or updating their status. After all, you’re paying a professional photographer to take your photos, you hardly need all your friends snapping quick low quality photos! If you think your guests may take your request the wrong way, like you’re a celebrity or something, you can word it nicely by saying: “We want you to truly enjoy the ceremony and reception, so we ask that you please refrain from taking photos or videos today and just have fun”.
