Screaming success sees Jets rocket into new tour, album here’s a handful of Aussie bands that have managed to turn their success into long term careers in the music industry. The Screaming Jets is one of those bands. This is no mean feat when you consider that many bands struggle to make a name for themselves let alone sustain it for several decades like the Jets have. This year the Aussie rockers will be celebrating their 25th anniversary with a heap of live shows and a new album full of rock tracks.

I’ve never really sat down with the intent to write a song, it just happens

Talking about recording the solo album after spending years playing with the band, Paul jokes that the main difference was that it was “quieter” – though the other members weren’t totally absent from the recording process.

“A lot of the songs are Jets songs that I wrote. I still hear everybody else in my head anyway, even though they’re not there. I don’t know if that’s some sort of mental condition,” he laughed.

As songwriter for The Screaming Jets, Paul has been responsible for some of this country’s best rock tracks. These songs have become an integral part of the Australian soundtrack and Paul admits that writing the next track is never far from his mind.

“I write constantly,” he said.

“I’ve always got a little pad and pen in my little fishing bag that goes everywhere with me, my handbag. So I’ve got my smokes, my phone, pad and pen.”

Most of the inspiration for the songs comes from everyday life.

“I’ll see something written or I hear

somebody say something at the pub or a mate say something and I’ll write it down,” Paul said.

“I’ve never really just sat down with the intent to write a song, it just sort of happens.”

In regards to his music idols, Paul says it’s hard to narrow it down from the hundreds who have inspired him over the years.

“There’s just so many artists that are great but I think, I guess for me, I’m a fan of The Who and I’m a fan of Tom Petty.”

Though he has a range of bands that he loves – including the Foo Fighters and Stone Sour who are his current favourite – and spends a lot of time rocking out on stage, he doesn’t get many opportunities to see live music himself.

“I haven’t seen a band for ages, which sucks,” he said.

The Screaming Jets will be touring the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers on Friday, November 21. Tickets are $47.41.

“You don’t think you’re going to last that long but part of you was always hoping that you would,” said bassist, songwriter and original member Paul Woseen about making it to 25 years.

As part of the anniversary celebrations the band are currently in the middle of a national tour which will see them heading to Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth. Along with capital cities the band will also be heading to regional venues including a stop off at the Evan Theatre on Friday, November 21. Talking to Paul it sounds like the shows are attracting a range of fans, from familiar faces to the next generation of rock enthusiasts.

“I’m 47 and there’s people out there having fun watching the band and they’re 18 or 19 – I could be their dad,” he laughed.

“I guess it’s the same sort of thing that happened to me and heaps of other people who’re playing.

“I got into certain bands from listening to mate’s brother’s records or my parents’ records.”

After forming in Newcastle in 1989 The Screaming Jets have gone on to earn themselves a place in Australian rock royalty. Together they’ve released six studio albums – three of which made it into the top five on the ARIA albums charts – played thousands of gigs and given music fans hit songs like ‘Helping Hand’, ‘Better’, ‘Sad Song’ and ‘October Grey’.

Though Paul and frontman Dave Gleeson are the only original members left it’s still quite an achievement for the Jets to have made it to 25 years. For Paul the reason why he’s still playing with Dave and the guys is simple.

“Love of the music, love of playing together,” he said.

“We’re mates, so we’re friends and we just dig playing what we do.”

Along with the tour the band will be releasing a new album, which is full of tracks that Paul describes as “good, hard, rocking songs”.

Last year Paul released his first acoustic solo album ‘Bombido’, which includes Jets tracks along with new material.

his year’s Sydney Writer’s Festival will feature the very first dedicated Children’s Festival and western Sydney has been chosen as the location for the event. The Children’s Festival of Moving Stories will run from Friday, November 14 till Thursday, December 4 and offers young readers and writers plenty of fun events right here in Penrith.

On Saturday, November 22, Russ the Travelling Story Bus will be stopping off at Penrith Panthers.

This colourful bus has been decorated with illustrations by Tony Flowers, children’s book illustrator and art and design teacher at Kingswood TAFE. Russ the bus will be offering children the chance to participate in a free book swap and Panthers players will be on hand to read to the kids.

Local primary and secondary students will also be attending the Children’s Author Roadshow at Penrith City Library on Tuesday, December 2. The event is for schools only and will feature authors including Belinda Murrell, Frances Watts, Rachel Spratt and Children’s Laureate Jackie French.

As part of the festival Jackie will also be launching the My Story Project, which is designed to encourage children to write and publish their own stories about growing up in Western Sydney.

Other events will be held across western Sydney including an author talk by Mem Fox at Parramatta

‘Better call Saul’ to air on Nine After making a name for himself as a one hit wonder rapper in the 90’s, Vanilla Ice is doing away with technology for the more simple things in life in his brand new TV series titled ‘Vanilla Ice Goes Amish’. The ‘Ice Ice Baby’ singer is set to explore the simple culture of hand craftsmanship when the show premieres on LifeStyle Home next Saturday at 7.30pm.

If you’re into police dramas a new one is about to begin next week on Universal Channel. Made by ‘Law and Order’ creator, Dick Wolf, ‘Chicago P.D.’ dramatises police who patrol the beat and those who tackle major crimes in Chicago.

It stars Sophia Bush and premiered in January in the States. It airs with a double episode here on Thursday, November 20 at 8.30pm.

Two big time shows have just been axed in the US with ELEVEN supernatural drama ‘Witches of East End’ dumped along with long-running Simon Baker series ‘The Mentalist’.

The latter, however, will see out its current 13 episode season.

If you’re a fan of ‘Breaking Bad’, you’ll love that upcoming prequel ‘Better Call Saul’ will air on Channel Nine just hours after its US screening. The series follows the trials and tribulations of criminal lawyer Saul Goodman and is set six years before ‘Breaking Bad’.

A launch date for Fairfax’s new service hasn’t been announced but, for a monthly subscription, Stan will offer thousands of hours of entertainment with first-run exclusives, award-winning TV shows, classic catalogue, blockbuster movies and exciting kids content.

Lastly, I’m always highly critical of Foxtel but I want to congratulate them on this occasion for their new affordable packages, which were launched last week. Even though I had to wait on the phone for an hour to get my package changed, I now pay $10 less per month. Very happy!

PRIMARY ETHICS TEACHERS NEEDED

To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught?

While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there.

Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

”

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations.

Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons.

Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help.

Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved.

Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.”

Jake Johnson (‘New Girl’, ‘21 Jump Street’, ‘Get Him to the Greek’) and Damon Wayans Jr (‘New Girl’, ‘Happy Endings’) respectively star in the hilarious new comedy of mistaken identity.

The fun kicks off when two self-described 30-year-old losers, Ryan (Johnson) and Justin (Wayans Jr) attend a costume party dressed as cops. They almost instantly become neighbourhood sensations, however also become entangled in a real-life web of crime amongst mobsters and corrupt detectives. Naturally, a variety of hilarious situations ensue.

The film blends comedy elements with romance and action, making it entertaining to a wide audience.

Johnson and Wayans Jr work well together on ‘New Girl’ and have an obvious comedic chemistry, so it’s great to see them pair up for this film.

The film, however, has been met with largely negative reviews. This may be due to its overtly graphic nature, with extreme coarse language, a lot of sexual references and strong violence.

In what is their eighth studio album, Foo Fighters have produced ‘Sonic Highway’ as an eight-track ode to American music.

The album shares its title with the Dave Grohl-directed eightepisode HBO series. While the album is a short one, recorded at just over 44 minutes, each track represents a different American city. Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear wrote and recorded a song in each city, exploring the music scene in each: how each area shaped these musicians in their early years, and conversely, how each musician has since impacted the musical culture of their respective hometowns.

Each song features local legends, with every lyric written in an entirely new experimental style: Grohl held off on putting down words until the last day of each session, so as to be inspired by the experiences, interviews for the HBO series, and other local personalities who became part of the process.

The first song released from the album, ‘Something from Nothing’ is a classic rock track with a groovy sort of feel to it, influenced heavily by the Chciago music scene. The second track, ‘The Feast and the Famine’ has influences of the Washington D.C. hardcore punk scene.

Penrith shines with Christmas spirit CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING, NOVEMBER 7

enrith was out in full force and bringing the Christmas cheer on Friday, November 7 for the Community Christmas Tree Lighting. The beautiful 26 foot Christmas Tree located in the pop up park was lit up by in front of a cheering crowd.

It wasn’t just about the tree though. The event also offered attendees free entertainment including the ‘A Very Frozen Christmas’ show, a performance by Nicki Gillis and carols from The Penrith City Choir.

There was Christmas themed market stalls, free face painting and of course a visit from Santa himself. Local performers looked spectacular in their Christmas themed costumes and outfits. It was the perfect way to prepare for the Christmas season.

Derby Day definitely was the highlight when it came to classy fashion

On Melbourne Cup Day I waltzed into Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse on a high horse, knowing that I had absolutely nailed my Cup Day outfit; I could not have been happier.

But putting together an outfit that I was 100 per cent happy with took weeks, if not months, of stress, discontent and frustration that was only alleviated the day before the actual event.

When a friend first approached me about heading down to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup Carnival, one of the most fashionable weeks in the year, I did not have to think twice before answering with a yes.

Within days we had our flights and accommodation booked and had bought tickets to both Derby Day on Saturday, November 9 and the Melbourne Cup, on Tuesday, November 4.

I wasn’t in it for the gambling or the drinking, for me the trip was all about fashion and as soon as I had those tickets, I got straight to work on my outfits. But while my best friend was lay-buying designer dresses left, right and centre, I was having miss after miss.

Scrolling through my Instagram feed one afternoon I came across a dress that I knew would be perfect for the Melbourne Cup. It was very expensive and I had to travel for over an hour to try it on but I knew that it was the dress for me.

For weeks, with the trip looming closer and closer, I had to postpone my visit to the store for one reason or another until I had left it so late that I needed to purchase a backup outfit.

In under an hour at a local store I had picked out two whole outfits, fascinators and shoes included, for less than my dream dress would have cost me but alas, I still wasn’t happy.

My derby day outfit – a white skirt and shirt, worn with a black hat and shoes – I could live with

but I was dreading Melbourne Cup Day itself.

I loathed the backup that I had bought and loathed it even more when I thought of or accidentally (read: purposefully) looked at photos of my dream dress.

With less than a week to go before I would be hopping on a plane to Melbourne, I finally had the opportunity to make the drive to try on the dress.

I got there, made a beeline for it and... hated it.

It just didn’t suit me. So I was left with nothing but a back-up outfit that I hated and space in my suitcase.

It was a big decision but I ended up getting on a plane to Melbourne without an outfit for the Cup – I left behind the backup dress, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to face wearing it on the day.

We touched down and the following morning we were all dolled up in our black-and-whites and on our way to Derby Day. The fashions here were fantastic and in general, I preferred the Derby Day fashion to the Melbourne Cup itself – the black-and-white theme made the day seem much more classy.

The following day was a designated sight-seeing day and it wasn’t until Monday, the day before the Cup that I was finally able to hit the shops.

I had met up with a friend who lives in Melbourne and was able to show me around, and we were walking through our fourth department store for the day – the shopping in Melbourne is second to none – when we saw it; the perfect dress.

It was dark blue, which as someone who doesn’t wear bright colours suited me perfectly, and as classy as they come.

Choosing a fascinator to match was simple – I opted for something black – and the black, pointed toe heels that I had brought with me were the obvious choice.

Maybe it was the fact that it took months of stress to find it or maybe it just was the most well put together outfit I have ever worn, but I have never felt so content in an outfit before and as a result, I had an absolutely fantastic day.

It is worth heading down to Melbourne for the Cup, if not for the fashion, for the atmosphere – but hold out for the perfect dress!

Mythbusting your jewellery queries I get asked a lot of questions while working with my clients on their customised pieces of jewellery and I thought I’d share some answers to the queries that are somewhat misunderstood. 1. 9ct gold is harder than 18ct gold This is always a common query. Often people think that this is the case because there is a higher alloy content in 9ct gold and therefore it ‘should’ be harder. Think of it this way, if the total of all the metal used to make a ring equals 1000, a 9ct ring would have 375 parts gold and 625 parts alloy. 18ct would have 750 parts gold and 250 parts alloy.

Even though you would think 9ct gold would be harder, 18ct gold usually wears better. The higher gold content generally means it takes a few more knocks and bumps and can move with you rather than being more brittle and possibly being prone to cracks if damaged.

2. Diamonds are invincible Yes, diamonds are one of the hardest substances in the world, however they can still be chipped, cracked and abraded if they are hit on the right angle with enough force. This is how they were actually cut back in the day!

3. White gold is ‘yellow gold underneath’ White gold is actually a mixture of gold in its pure form, which is yellow, along with alloys to change the colour of the metal from yellow to white, generally silver and palladium – a derivative of platinum. All white gold, regardless of whether it’s 9ct or 18ct, has a plating applied when the piece is finished called rhodium and this is what gives white gold it’s beautiful, bright lustre. Depending on what alloys are used to make white gold the metal may retain a slightly more yellow colour, however if the mix is correct it should remain white in colour underneath as the rhodium plating wears off over time. It will just dull a little so you will need to have your white gold jewellery re-plated every six to 12 months.

What’s your money personality?

Our personalities can influence some of the most important decisions in our lives. Who we marry, where we work and the friends we keep can vary widely depending on whether we are introverted, outgoing, creative or optimistic.

The same can also be said for our finances.

The big spender Can’t avoid a sale? Do you enjoy flashing your money around, shouting your friends to lunch and buying a round of drinks for strangers at the bar? This behaviour could mean you are a big spender. While it is okay to enjoy your hard-earned cash, you need to be careful. Remember to create a budget and try not to dip into your rent money every time a shiny new electronic device is released.

The hoarder While the people featured on ‘Hoarders’ can’t let go of material possessions, a money hoarder is more likely to rule over their finances with an iron fist. When your wages are deposited in your bank account, do you count every cent and carefully allocate the funds to each bill and spend not a dollar more than you have to? Of course, you’re unlikely to appear on an episode of ‘Hoarders’ for squirrelling money away in your bank account, but remember to lighten up a little sometimes.

The denier No matter how bad things get, the denier doesn’t want to know. Firmly convinced that the “she’ll be right” attitude is the right way to go, this personality type generally doesn’t want to admit or acknowledge when mistakes are being made.

How do you decide if you’re a denier? Be wary if you are the type of person who avoids looking at your bills, feels uncomfortable checking your online banking balance or changes the subject when people talk about money.

The gambler Are you a risk taker or a thrill seeker? Even if it means losing everything, the gambler is willing to put their last dollar on an unstable investment or chance bet. If the gamble pays off, then great! But this is unfortunately unlikely. Remember to keep some of your finances under lock and key – not to be touched unless on official business. You can allocate a certain amount to trying new investments, but stick to your budget.

Just think for a minute your business is trying to sell a new food in a supermarket. The shelves are bulging with products already so how do you get anybody to look at your product?

One angle is make it sound healthier than the competition.

It’s almost funny to see the advertisements for one processed, sugar filled, nutrient devoid bar saying they’re so much healthier than that other processed, sugar filled bar because it has ‘real strawberry’ powdered concentrate.

You’re much better off consuming healthy, proper, unprocessed food. This will get you the macro nutrients and just as importantly, the micro nutrients. These are all the vitamins and minerals that actually provide nutrition to your body.

Without them the millions of processes your body constantly needs to perform can’t happen.

Imagine planting two similar trees. One is planted in a pot full of sand that gets a drip of water now and then. It’s alive but only just. The other is planted in dark, composted nutrient rich, well drained soil and given fresh water every day.

How do you think they would compare in a year’s time? Now think, which tree do you feel more like most often?

And just taking a vitamin tablet isn’t enough.

It doesn’t compare to real food. Take for example an apple; it has thousands of compounds, from quercetin – a powerful antioxidant that reduces cardiovascular risk – to flavonoids and phytochemicals that seem to fight cancer. Science is not even sure what half these things do yet. But our body has evolved from eating them for thousands of years and it knows what to do with each.

So next time you eat, think of those trees in the example above. Wouldn’t you rather thrive than just survive?

Being healthy means you can enjoy life more – be more active, involved in more of life.

After enduring breast cancer a few years back, I decided to get fit, healthy and live life to the best I could. I found the best way of getting healthy was regular exercise and eating healthy.

I now exercise six days each week, participating in weight training, cardio exercise and dragon boat paddling. I am never bored with exercise and know I have greatly improved my fitness and health.

Disappointment does not last if you know God

Cats love to roam and explore their environment, however, cats that have access to outdoors will occasionally get into a fight with another cat. Cats are territorial animals and will fight with each other to defend their territory. If your cat gets bitten during a fight, bacteria from the other cat’s teeth will enter the wound and this may result in the formation of an abscess.

An abscess is an accumulation of pus that usually forms as a result of a puncture wound. Cat fight abscesses are most common around the face, shoulders or around the rump/tail. If you know that your cat has been in a fight, it is always a good idea to see a veterinarian immediately – early use of antibiotics can prevent abscess formation and also avoid surgery.

What are the signs that your cat has an abscess? Abscesses usually appear two to seven days after your cat gets bitten.

Affected cats will often be lethargic, have a poor appetite, have a fever and sometimes have painful areas on their body – this is usually where the bite wound is. Often you will also find a soft, warm lump and sometimes, if the abscess bursts, you will find a small weeping wound.

How are abscesses treated? Treatment generally involves surgery to flush out the pus and remove any dead/traumatised tissue. Sometimes drains are placed when there are large pockets and this allows the skin to heal. Antibiotics and of course pain relief are also used to keep your cat nice and comfortable.

Surgery can often be avoided if your cat is brought in as soon as a bite happens.

How can I prevent this in my cat? Most abscesses are caused by cat fights, so the best way to prevent them is by keeping your cat indoors as much as possible. It is also essential to get your cats desexed; entire male cats are very territorial and are much more likely to fight than desexed cats! It is also important to see your vet as soon as you think your cat has been in a fight. You can usually prevent an abscess from forming with early treatment.

It is also important to remember that the FIV virus (feline AIDS) is transmitted through deep scratches and bite wounds. Cats that have access to outdoors are at risk of contracting feline AIDS.

It is natural to be saddened by bad news. Perhaps it could be about serious illness or the loss of your job, a relationship breakdown, or even death. Yet, is it possible to stand firm in the face of this news?

Look at these strengthening, encouraging words from the Bible’s book of Psalms. In Psalm 16, the writer, David, facing great uncertainty is able to say; “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing... I shall not be shaken... my heart is glad; my body... will rest secure because you will not abandon me to the grave... you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.’”

Despite the uncertain circumstances in his life, David, because he knows that apart from God, he has nothing of eternal value, he will not be shaken. In fact, David is able to experience peace and calm. He has a quiet inner joy, the confident joy of knowing that no matter what happens, God will never abandon him. Even in death, God will be with David because God will take him to be at home with him where David will experience eternal joy in God’s presence.

Sometimes we can be so weighed down by disappointment that we might feel as if all hope is gone. Look again at these important Biblical truths.

They are not just words on a page, but truths which you can live by, truths so that as tough times come, you can stand firm.

God’s promise is that you can experience this quite inner joy when you set God and his Son Jesus as the Lord of your life.

With seating for a mere six, the St Nicholas chapel on a rocky islet off Hydra Island in Greece has to be amongst the tiniest and most picturesque in the world.

Snapped from mega motor-cruiser SeaDream I as it sailed last month from Athens to Rome, the chapel was built in the early 19th century by a prominent Hydra-based family involved with the sea, and named St Nicholas Chapel after the Patron Saint of Greece and protector of sailors and seamen.

The unique St Nicholas Organisation that promotes everything to do with the Saint, from saving lives to Santa Claus, says that with almost every family in the Aegean Islands having a connection

in some way with the sea, many of the wealthier in the past built chapels like this one throughout the islands.

They were built so that in the event of family members being endangered at sea, prayers could be offered with the promise of placing a tiny model or plaque of their ship made out of wood, silver or even gold in these chapels in thanks to St Nicholas for the family member’s survival and safe return home.

Called tamata, these promised offerings were then laid before an icon of St Nicholas in the chapels by the saved seamen, and locals on Hydra say they’ve seen a number of these in the remote and picturesque St Nicholas chapel.

“Volunteer Rotarians from our club will assist those who do not have carers and accompany the elderly and infirm shoppers as they move around Big W.” Whether they live in a village or their own private residence, all of the elderly and infirm in the local area are invited to attend and complete their Christmas shopping in peace and quiet.

“Come and participate in this unique opportunity made available through the generosity and community spirit of Big W,” the representative said.

The exclusive shopping event will take place on the evening of Wednesday, December 3, from 6pm to 8pm at Big W, Westfield Penrith, which can be found at the western end of the shopping complex on High Street, Penrith.

Smoke alarms are mandatory in NSW residential properties but new data has revealed that NSW is the worst state for smoke alarm compliance, after Victoria.

According to the NSW Government, 92.8 per cent of homes have a smoke alarm installed.

Yet research on the ground by Smoke Alarms Australia has suggested that nearly half of all NSW households have a non-working smoke alarm, and nearly one in three households have no working smoke alarm at all.

Since 2010, Smoke Alarms Australia has carried out a first inspection of more than 140,000 residential properties and found that 39.2 per cent of inspected NSW properties had at least one non-working smoke alarm up.

This increased to 63.7 per cent in 2014.

Troy Thompson, General Manager at Smoke Alarms Australia, says: “These statistics are worrying, and suggest that state government messages such as ‘Only working smoke alarms save lives’ still have a long way to go.

Home owners are likely unaware of the smoke alarm legislation in their state, or that alarms expire after 10 years.”

Ms French was presented with the award at the NSW Australian of the Year awards, held at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art on Monday night.

The award recognises the hard work and dedication Ms French has invested in a number of areas, from her writing career to her advocacy for children with learning difficulties.

Well-known as the ‘wombat negotiator’, the 60-year-old is also passionate about the conservation of wildlife and the planet, and is a director of the Wombat Foundation that raises funds for wombat research.

Ms French has published 140 books in 32 languages and received more than 60 literary prizes for beloved children’s classics such as Diary of a Wombat. She is also one of the few writers to win both literary and children’s choice awards.

In fact, the clinic is the only one of its kind in Australia and is one of just a few in the world that offers a special balance re-training technique used in fall prevention and is renown for vastly improving the livelihood of local seniors.

The clinic celebrated its sixth anniversary on Thursday, November 13.

he kids have moved out and you are looking to downsize. The obvious choice is for a home that has fewer rooms so there’s not as much cleaning. But if you think about it, this new house could last you another 20 years, so will it be still be suitable?

Finding a house now that has a few simple features, or adding them to your existing home, will make sure you can enjoy your home well into your senior years.

Starting in the kitchen, if you have a gas range, make sure it is equipped with pilot lights and an automatic cut-off in the event of flame failure. Make sure your kitchen counter is at a comfortable height and that there is plenty of room on it so that you can avoid lifting.

Check that the tiles are non-slip and that the light switch is right next to the entrance way so that it is easy to access.

Use a sturdy, stable stepladder or stepstool rather than a chair to reach objects in overhead cabinets or better yet, make sure the cabinets are at an accessible height so you are not over-reaching.

Home accidents commonly happen in the stairwells, and that’s for people of any age.

Consider putting in a sensor light in the stairwell so that it is immediately lit up as you approach. Make sure the flooring is not slippery – just remember that even worn carpet can be slippery at times so consider installing grip strips if you are
