COVER STORY

From evil mastermind to creative mastermind aking on the role of an iconic, evil mastermind like Lex Luthor can be mentally and physically draining, which is something ‘Smallville’ star Michael Rosenbaum knows all too well.

Michael Rosenbaum will be a Supanova this weekend

Friday 13 June 2014 the western weekender • west life

“It’s tough when you’re playing a character like that. It’s not like everyday you’re going in laughing and having a fun scene playing with your friends,” he said. “You’re always intense and you’re screaming, or you’re in a straight-jacket, or you’re manipulative, or you’re emotional, or you’re lonely. You’re all these negative emotions and playing that takes a toll on your body and mind and you start to sometimes you get a little caught up in that.” The popular TV series ‘Smallville’ ran for 10 seasons and followed the lives of Clark Kent, Lex Luthor and Lana Lang, giving viewers a taste of the early relationships between the well known ‘Superman’ characters. Rosenbaum’s seven year role in the hit show was one neither he, or those close to him, ever expected him to get. “I was the smallest kid in my high school and years later, 10 years later, I’m playing the biggest iconic villain in comic book history. It just doesn’t make sense. But again it’s fantasy so anything can happen,” he said. “I think my friends were even more shocked when they found out because they’re like, ‘You? You’re playing an evil mastermind? You couldn’t even get through pre-algebra and you’re playing an evil genius? Are you kidding me?’” Keeping in line with the comic book theme, Rosenbaum also played the role of the Flash in the animated TV series ‘Justice League’. Knowing this you’d assume that he grew up on comics, right? “No I was not a huge comic book fan which is really alarming to people, I don’t know if alarming is the right word, but they’re definitely a bit shocked, they’re like, ‘What?!’ I go, ‘no, I like scary movies’,” he said. “I used to borrow my parents’ VCR downstairs and connect it to mine upstairs and dub or record these movies that I would rent, these horror movies, thinking that I’m going to have the greatest collection. I didn’t know that video would look like crap after 10 years. And all those videos are worth nothing, countless hours of wasted time.” While ‘Smallville’ is easily his most well known role, Rosenbaum has also starred in movies including ‘Sweet November’ and ‘Urban Legends’, along with his voice over work in video games and animated TV shows such as ‘The Wild Thornberrys’ and ‘Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker’.

But speaking to Rosenbaum it’s clear that what excites him most at the moment is getting behind the scenes, taking on the role of writer and director for the 2014 comedy ‘Back in the Day’. In fact his first taste of directing was during an episode of ‘Smallville’ followed by a short horror film, which made it to Screamfest, the largest horror film festival in the US. It was all the motivation he needed to take his career to the next level. “I just was falling in love with this whole creative side. I said, you know what my next step is, I’ve got to direct a movie,” he said. And it seems that after his first full length film, Rosenbaum is pretty hooked on the whole directing gig, already thinking about his next project. “I want it to be even better, I want it to be the next step and I want it to be bigger. A bigger budget, a better movie and so I’m always striving, working hard to get to the next level and make my next movie,” he said. Though he is moving away from the role of villain it seems the Lex Luthor persona does come in handy when directing. “I just try to listen to everybody and I just try to learn from everybody and I also tell everybody to shut up when I know I’m right. Sometimes a good kick in the ass lets everybody know ‘oh, oh wow, he’s not always just Mr Nice Guy, sometimes he probably is that Lex Luthor guy,’ Rosenbaum joked. “Its definitely inadvertent though, I don’t try but every once in a while someone pushes your buttons and you’re like ‘listen this is the way it is, go to your mark, say the line, shut up’. I’m pretty easy going though, I’m not a shouter.” After playing the character of Lex for so many years, Rosenbaum will pass the baton to Jesse Eisenberg who has been announced as the newest actor to play the villain in the much anticipated ‘Batman vs Superman’ movie. While he was surprised by the casting choice, Rosenbaum has no doubt the iconic role is in safe hands. “I never thought he was going to ever play Lex Luthor, it’s so funny how things come around but he’ll be great and I think Zack Snyder’s a tremendous director and I think they’re putting so much money into it that you’re going to get as many takes as you can until you get it right,” he said. “And I think he’s good and I think they know what they’re doing so I’m sure its going to be good, I’m sure he’s going to be great.” Michael Rosenbaum will be appearing at Supanova Pop Culture Expo at Sydney Showground, Olympic Park from June 13 to June 15. Tickets are on sale through Moshtix or at the door. For more information head to www.supanova.com.au.

NOW CALLING FOR LOCAL

VOLUNTEERS While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices. To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

“

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

”

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

POPS FOR TOTS Q THEATRE SUNDAY, JUNE 22

On Sunday, June 22 the Penrith Symphony Orchestra will be bringing their ‘Pops for Tots’ concerts to the Q theatre and this time it’s going to be a bit of a battle when Mozart meets Beethoven, asking the question, are the two musical masterminds friends or rivals? George Ellis plays the role of Mozart and Beethoven will be played by ABC Classic FM radio host Guy Noble. Watching the delight in children’s faces as they soak up the sounds of an engaging, interactive concert presentation is living proof that learning about classical music can be – and should be – fun! The concert will bring the magic of the two composers to life, keeping your kids

mesmerised by the music and on stage theatrics. Apart from the great storyline, this will be a hands on experience where children will have the chance to engage with the instruments while learning about the orchestra. Up close and personal, the children will learn about each instrument, how it is played and the different sounds they make. The ‘Pops for Tots’ concerts will also showcase young musicians from local high schools and the Penrith Conservatorium of Music. These up and comers will be given the chance to experience what it’s like to playing with a symphony orchestra and in front of an audience. The show will be split over two concerts to cater for ages two to 12-years making this the perfect opportunity for children to start their journey through the world of music. ‘Pops for Tots’ will be on at the Q Theatre at the Joan on Sunday, June 22. There will be two performances: 11am (for children ages 2 to 7) and 12.30pm (for children ages 5 to 12). Tickets are $17-$22. Free entry for infants under two. PLAZA SUITE HENRY LAWSON THEATRE JUNE 13 - JULY 4

Who’ll visit next? his June Henry Lawson Theatre presents Neil Simon’s ‘Plaza Suite’. The hilarious theatre production follows the lives of three different groups of people who each visit a suite at the Plaza. It’s a local production that is sure to be a hit! The first of the three stories is ‘Visitor from Mamaroneck’ which revolves around a married couple who stay at the suite to escape their home while it’s being repainted. Next comes ‘Visitor from Hollywood’ involving a Hollywood producer who decides to invite his childhood sweetheart – who is now a housewife – to stay with him in the suite. In the final story, ‘Visitor from Forest Hills’, there is only one guest in the suite. A bride who has locked herself in and refuses to come out and face her wedding day. Neil Simon’s ‘Plaza Suite’ will be playing at the Henry Lawson Theatre in Werrington. Tickets are $15-$21. Visit www.hltheatre.com.au or call 4729 2996.

ou may not recognise the name Olivia Olson, but you would recognise her voice. Olivia came to prominence through her role as Joanna in the hit romantic comedy ‘Love Actually’, playing the young girl who blew audiences away with her rendition of the Mariah Carrey hit ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’. Even the movie’s producers didn’t believe her voice was that good. “We did the run through and my dad was [said to the producers] ‘you need to record the run through, I’m telling you it’s going to be the one you end up using’. So they did that and after they were like ‘ok… one second’ and turned the mute button on so I couldn’t hear what they were talking about in the booth, but my father later told me that they were like ‘no one’s going to believe it, it’s too good’,” Olson said. Along with being a talented singer, Olson also lends her vocal

Weird is definitely a good word to describe her character Marceline, who is half vampire, half demon and has had her fair share of troubles.

Olson also voices the character of Vanessa Doofenshmirtz in the Disney animated series ‘Phineas and Ferb’. So where does her future lie? “I always say ‘I’m not an actor’. I’m a singer who’s acting but I’ve just been lucky enough that every single role, every big role that I’ve been able to land is a singing role.” Olivia Olson will be appearing at Supanova Pop Culture Expo at Sydney Showground, Olympic Park from June 13 to June 15.

Georgie puts family first It seems I spoke too soon a few weeks back when I mentioned something in this column about the whereabouts of my old friend, Grant Denyer. Well, he is back hosting one of my favourite game shows ‘Family Feud’. Denyer has been announced as the new host of the revived show which will air weeknights on Ten at 6pm. To get involved see www.familyfeud.com.au.

Channel Nine’s Georgie Gardner said farewell to viewers in her final appearance on the ‘Today’ show after seven long years last Friday. Gardner announced she was leaving breaky TV late last month due to wanting to spend more time with her family. Gardner has been Sylvia Jeffreys, who began her stint on Monday. Gardner will remain with Nine News and present news bulletins.

My favourite show right now, ‘House Rules’, will be back for a third season. Channel Seven has renewed the renovation series and is looking for contestants now. To apply to possibly have your mortgage paid off visit yahoo7.com.au/ houserules.

Still at Nine, and it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot more of recently retired Sharks player Beau Ryan in the near future. Ryan announced his retirement from rugby league, effective immediately, on ‘The Footy Show’ last Thursday. He’ll become a permanent fixture.

‘Home and Away’ star Lincoln Younes, also known as Casey Braxton, will leave the hit soap in the next few months to join Channel Nine’s top drama, ‘Love Child’. Younes has been on ‘Home and Away’ since 2011 and is one of the show’s most popular characters. It’s quite the controversy!

SBS series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ is returning this July with funnyman Andrew Denton the first guest of the new season. Denton will learn about his Jewish roots and how books form a recurring theme in his life. The show begins on SBS One on Tuesday, July 8 at 7.30pm.

Music BLENDED Starring: Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore

LANA DEL REY ULTRAVIOLENCE Out Now

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore must really enjoy working together. Their new movie ‘Blended’ is the third time the two actors have appeared on screen together, previously starring opposite each other in the hit romantic comedies ‘The Wedding Singer’ and ‘50 First Dates’. This time around Drew Barrymore plays Lauren Reynolds, a single parent who goes on a terrible blind date with Jim Friedman, also a single parent, played by Sandler. As a result of the disastrous experience it’s safe to say that they are not particularly keen for a second date. But of course their paths cross again after a series of events that sees them and their respective children on a holiday in Africa. Not only are they forced to spend time together at the family resort but they also end up having to share a suite. Alongside Barrymore and Sandler is Wendi McLendonCovey, from the hit comedy ‘Bridesmaids’ and Kevin Nealon who is a regular face in Happy Madison films, the production company founded by Sandler. ‘Blended’ is even directed by Frank Coraci who directed ‘The Wedding Singer’.

Lana Del Rey seems to have divided listeners since she first hit the music scene, but regardless of whether you love her or hate her there is no doubt that her sultry sound has caught the attention of music fans. Falling somewhere between sweet and sexy, Lana is a siren in every sense of the word. Her voice lures listeners in with its innocence and melancholy but lurking underneath the surface is something a little darker. On her new album ‘Ultraviolence’ Lana has taken this dark side a little further than she did on her previous release ‘Born To Die’. This is the kind of music that delights in sadness. Listeners will easily get lost in the melancholy of title track ‘Ultraviolence’, while the album’s first single, ‘West Coast’, is sultry and mysterious with hints of sunshine. The track was co-written by Lana and Rick Nowels, who has worked with artists including Madonna, Lykke Li, Sia, Santigold and Stevie Nicks, just to name a few. Joining them is The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach who produced ‘West Coast’. With the track at over 16 million views on YouTube since its release it seems the talented combination of Del Rey, Nowels and Auerbach has paid off. There is much to love here for any fan of Lana Del Rey.

LAST VEGAS RATED M

Starring: Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline It’s not often you get four of the most well known actors in the same movie, even rarer when they are all academy award winners. But that’s exactly what you get with ‘Last Vegas’, a comedy that has been described as ‘The Hangover’ with an older cast. ‘Last Vegas’ sees four childhood friends, Billy (Michael Douglas), Archie (Morgan Freeman), Paddy (Robert De Niro) and Sam (Kevin Kline), get together to celebrate Billy’s impending nuptials to his much younger fiancé. And of course where better to celebrate than the city synonymous with debauchery and bachelor parties, Las Vegas. Though they are looking for fun they find not only have they changed, but so has the city of sin. Ultimately the group’s attempt to relive their youth ends up testing their friendship. Being the city where people go to party it’s no surprise that ‘Last Vegas’ features cameo appearances by rapper 50 Cent and Redfoo, one half of musical duo LMFAO.

CULINARY GUIDE

hai cuisine is clearly a favourite amongst local diners. And no wonder when the meals are packed with flavour, from the spicy to the sweet and everything in between. There’s something to please every taste bud. If just the thought of those delicious Thai delights has your mouth watering then why not head to Five Stars Thaitanic at Jordan Springs. The restaurant is the newest addition to the family, which now includes a total of six branches across the greater Sydney area, with the first branch opening 15 years ago in Ingleburn. The menu at Five Stars Thaitanic is full of all your favourite Thai meals. Appetisers include curry puffs, fish cakes and satay chicken. Or if you can’t choose you can have a bit of each with the always popular mixed entree. After entrees are done you can move on to a selection of delicious thai curries. Depending on how much heat you can handle you can choose a mild red or yellow curry or go for a slightly more spicy option like the green curry. As with most of the menu you get to choose what meat or vegetarian options you’d like. Along with all the usual suspects including chicken, beef, lamb, tofu, prawns, fish, roast duck and mixed seafood there’s also the choice of salmon fillet, barramundi fillet or soft shell crab for something a little different. table. Chandon have recognised this and last year released a new label it called Vintage Collection, which it dedicated to bubblies that it saw would be a distinctive and exceptional expression of each season, the first being a 2008 Chandon Cuvee 500. Now it’s released its second Vintage Collection, a 2010 Chandon Les Trois (“The Three”) Rosé – a blend of maritime climate Tasmanian Chardonnay and Pinot Noir giving acidity and freshness; Chardonnay from Victoria’s King Valley whose high altitude Whitlands Plateau add complexity, power and weight; and cool Victoria Upper Yarra Valley Pinot Noir that rounds out all this with characters of floral and spice. “We believe we’ve brought together a beauty and interest in flavours which are uniquely Australian,” said Chandon Senior Winemaker, Dan Buckle. “The interplay between these three regions makes for a really interesting expression of sparkling Rosé.” He’s spot-on. Pay $45 and let the celebrations begin. One to note: WA’s Margaret River Forester Estate has released a fab 2009 Yelverton Reserve Cabernet that is a marvellous drop to pair with a selection of matured hard cheeses, rosemary-infused lamb roast or rare beef fillet steak. It’s great drop that’s well worth the $62.

On Wednesday, June 4 the Peachy put on a free dinner to thank the community who have supported them for more than three decades. Guests enjoyed a menu full of hearty winter favourites including pumpkin soup, beef stroganoff, chicken tikka masala and roast beef. On Friday, June 6 Peachy held one hell of a bash with DJ Tigerlily. To cater for the young, old and everyone in between the Peachy also put on a Family Day on Sunday.

he great thing about childhood is the way that learning can be disguised as a whole lot of magical fun. Kids can go on amazing adventures while learning skills that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Which is exactly what the television program ‘Tickety Toc’ offers. And parents will be happy to know the much loved show, which airs globally on Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr channel, can now be purchased on DVD in Australia. ‘Tickety Toc’ follows the inseparable twins Tommy and Tallulah who live in Tickety Town, a town inside the Tickety Toc Clock. The heroic twins and their friends go on amazing adventures in their attempt to keep the Tickety Toc Clock ticking in preparation to Chime in the Time every hour. This literal ‘race against the clock’ keeps the show fast paced and full of fun, providing plenty of entertainment for toddlers. In fact, the show is so popular the producers have made 52 episodes. But ‘Tickety Toc’ is not just about enjoyment, the show provides the littlies with a positive and engaging educational experience as well, teaching them about social responsibility, teamwork and problem solving while introducing toddlers to the concept of time. Are you capitalising on your creativity? The stars encourage you to revisit a neglected talent – whether it’s painting, writing, dancing, singing, taking photos or playing music. When it comes to a domestic matter, don’t let a loved one talk you into doing something you don’t believe in. Stand strong, as you spell out the boundaries.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Does life seem like all work and no play at the moment? Hang in there Aquarius, the professional skills you polish now will pay off handsomely further down the track. No matter how busy you are, make sure you leave room in your hectic schedule to spend quality time with an important child in your life.

‘Keep moving forwards and don’t look back’ is your current motto. But with Mercury reversing through your communication and social media zone make sure you’re broadcasting the correct message. And think things through (especially on the weekend). You don’t want to be saddled with the long-term consequences of impulsive and imprudent actions.

Lions are feeling impatient! But it’s not a wonderful week to make a wish, pursue goals, launch a group project or unveil a social media campaign. Wait until after July 1, when Mercury moves forwards again. With Venus visiting your career zone until June 23 a little Leo charm will take you far at work.

Star predictions for the week beginning June 15

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

It may feel as if everyone wants a piece of you this week Virgo, as responsibilities increase and deadlines shorten. If you’re smart, you’ll do all you can to avoid power struggles and communication chaos (especially at work). You’re keen to say what’s on your mind but try not to be a critic. Make your comments constructive and positive.

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

You may bump into an old friend, discover long-forgotten loveletters, or re-connect with a former flame. Just remember – memories are so seductive because they’re so selective! Librans have a predilection for procrastination. The weekend Aries Moon helps you initiate a project that’s been percolating in your mind. As birthday great Meryl Streep reminds us “Start by starting.”

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Your bovine charisma shines brightly this week, as vivacious Venus vamps through your sign and Jupiter gives you a welcome confidence boost. So it’s the ideal time to indulge in some personal body pampering, party like a pro, plus call in a few old favours. But your sweet tooth is stimulated and comfort eating is a danger.

Professional partnerships are favoured mid-week, as you utilise your Scorpio charm to win friends and influence people. You’re in an argumentative mood on Saturday but be warned – loved ones are primed to fight back, so you may find you’ve bitten off more than you can comfortably chew. Make love not war.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

It’s true that your ruler Mercury is reversing through your sign until July 1 but don’t let that frustrate you Twins. It’s the perfect time to read, research, reboot and reload, as you carefully doublecheck all information. Geminis love nothing better than a good old gossip but resist the urge to be the neighbourhood nosey-parker!

Many Sagittarians will be in a buoyant mood mid-week, as vivacious Venus and jovial Jupiter lift your spirits and boost your confidence. It’s also a terrific time to socialise with work colleagues or clients. The fiery Aries Moon puts you in the mood for sport, speed and spontaneity on Saturday.

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

With prosperity planet Jupiter visiting your sign until July 16 hurry up and make the most of the lucky opportunities that come your way. No side-stepping Crabs! The Sun shifts into your sign on Saturday, so home and family are the main focus for the next four weeks. Enjoy the time together!

For some lucky Goats, love is in the air! Venus and Jupiter jumpstart a sluggish romance or send Cupid’s arrows in your direction. But retrograde Mercury is about to cause some mischief in your daily routine zone, as your strict schedule goes out the window and chaos reigns supreme.

Winter warming house renovations As the colder months approach, many households will be considering how to keep their winter heating bills from breaking the bank. Home owners in particular may be researching renovations to improve energy efficiency and heat insulation. If you’re planning home improvements this year, here are five ways you can boost property value and potentially save money at the same time. Upgrade your water heater In the colder months, it is not uncommon for showers to increase in length and temperature. The unwillingness to step out onto the chilly, tiled bathroom floor can lead to many people staying under the water for just a few minutes longer. If your current water heating system is more than a few years old, chances are it does not comply with current efficiency updates. Upgrading your water heater will not only save you money, but could also prevent you from suffering through cold showers when your family has beaten you to the bathroom in the morning. Check your windows A significant amount of heat is lost through a home’s windows, so it is important to ensure the glass and sills in your property are up to scratch. Double glazing is also a great way of improving the value of a home near a busy road or noisy neighbour. Replace your curtains Threadbare curtains not only look cheap but also fail to trap heat within a room. This means that your heating system has its work cut out for it, as the moment you switch it off, the temperature begins to drop. Buying thicker, darker curtains will help maintain the warmth in a room for longer, as well as improving the overall look of the room. Reverse Cyle Air Conditioning Reverse cycle air conditioning is now widely accepted as one of the most energy efficient methods of heating a home. Investing in one of these systems will help you increase the warmth of your home, without breaking the bank. Due to the popularity of reverse cycle air conditioning, having one of these in your property will also potentially increase its attractiveness when you eventually decide to sell.

What gifts to buy for special occasions Your partner’s birthday is coming up. Possibly a special anniversary? Maybe you need to select a gift for your bride to be to present to her before she walks down the aisle. I’ve got some great suggestions to help you to select the perfect gift for each special occasion. The significance of the birthday will often determine the value spent on the item, and also the item itself. For something like a 40th or 50th birthday celebration this can often be commemorated with a nice watch for a man or a diamond piece of jewellery for women. In my experience I’ve found that you can’t go wrong with a classic pair of diamond studs or a stunning, wide diamond dress ring for the right hand. At York Jewellers we quite often see family members or friends pooling together to purchase a meaningful piece suited to the birthday girl/boy’s personal taste. Recently we sold a semi-precious coloured gemstone pendant to a family for their mum’s birthday to replace one that was stolen during a burglary. It wasn’t exactly the same as the one that was lost however it was the same colour and reminded her of the loved piece that she had had for many years. Anniversary gifts tend to vary greatly. I often start by asking what the recipient’s style is. Whether this will be something that is intended for everyday wear or special occasions? Do we need to match or compliment something that he or she already loves to wear – for example a diamond pendant to match some earrings that she favours? Do they have a favourite colour? Keep these topics front of mind to help ensure that the person receiving the gift will be able to co-ordinate it with their current collection. Wedding gifts are even more special when personalised with engraving or having been custom made for the occasion. I have engraved many gents’ watches over the years with the date of the wedding – which can also be a helpful reminder at anniversary time! Cufflinks with initials are a great option too. Something for him to keep and treasure and wear again. Grooms will often surprise their bride to be with diamond or pearl drop earrings or a simple diamond tennis bracelet to be worn on the wedding day.

your husband’s watch engraved with your wedding date so he doesn’t forget

There have been many times that shop assistants in my favourite retail stores have influenced my decision on a purchase. Some of the time it is the advice they give in the change rooms and other times it is their attitude when they’re on the floor but what I find most influential is the way they wear the brand’s own clothes. At many retail stores the staff are required to wear the clothes that are being sold in the store at that time – it is a brilliant marketing tool because, like I have said, it is an easy way to show customers what the item, outfit or product looks like in the flesh. But, contrary to Australian law, some companies have been found forcing their employees to purchase and wear company clothing without reimbursing them for their trouble. Having never worked in retail and only worked at places that required me to wear a uniform or my own clothing, I hadn’t really considered this would be an issue. But when you think about it, those who work in retail and wear the company’s own clothing are still wearing a uniform of sorts. Fair Work Ombudsman, which investigates workplace complaints in Australia, received a number of complaints from workers last year who were being forced to pay for their work clothes from their own pockets and began an investigation. A number of companies were found contravening the General Retail Industry Award 2010, which requires an employer who requires an employee to wear special clothing to reimburse the cost of the clothing. The employee is also entitled to an allowance for laundering. The agency selected eight popular-name brands to investigate claims that young workers were not being reimbursed, assessing the compliance of a total of 35 stores and interviewing many staff members in the process. The result of the investigation: businesses had to pay up. In fact, a total of $12,400 was paid to staff members from a number of the stores investigated – that’s a lot of outfits. I am willing to bet that some of these staff members had no idea they were being robbed of their rights, in fact they probably

15

thought it was normal to pay for your own clothes to wear at work and may not have thought twice about it, especially if they like they store itself. I for one would love to work at my favourite retail stores, just so that I would get first-dibs on the new-season clothes, and if I wasn’t being paid to wear the clothes, I probably wouldn’t care. I know what you are thinking; how dare these businesses use these innocent retail staff members like this, but it is possible that some of these stores had no idea what was required of them – even though they should have made sure they knew all that was required of them, it may have been an innocent mistake. “A big part of the role of the Fair Work Ombudsman is to work with businesses to ensure they have the knowledge they need to meet their obligations and where they wish, to operate at best practice,” said Fair Work Ombudsman’s Natalie James. “We are serious about our job of building knowledgeable and fairer workplaces and don’t insist there is only one way to achieve compliance – education is equally as important as deterrents.”

You have probably heard of the old saying ‘Use it or lose it’ but did you know they were talking about your life? Research released by the University of Queensland shows that physical inactivity has become the greatest health risk factor for women over 30 – posing more of a threat than smoking, obesity and high blood pressure. Women who don’t exercise are at the greatest risk of heart disease, Australia’s biggest killer. The health of more than 32,000 Australian women was tracked to compile the research, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. University of Queensland research professor Wendy Brown said the research showed women needed to move more to improve their health. “Continuing efforts to encourage people to stop smoking are warranted, but much more emphasis should be placed on physical inactivity,” she said. The study found women’s risk factors for heart disease changed throughout their lives, with smoking having the greatest impact below 30. At a population level, inactivity is the biggest risk factor but it is ignored by the people who make the decisions. When you think of the millions spent on stopping smoking, cholesterol or pharmaceuticals ads, we need to promote physical activity a lot more. Maybe because no one makes money when you go out for a walk or take the pushbike for a spin its not pushed in the mainstream media, because why would anyone pay to advertise it? The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommend that all adults get 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week, and researchers say if every woman older than 30 were to reach this recommendation, then at least 2,000 women’s lives would be saved just in Australia each year. There is at least one life you can affect right now with a little exercise, whether you’re male or female. When you’ve finished reading the paper, how about getting a little activity in yourself? Might just save your life!

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? Feeling great, living longer and living disease free!

Top three tips for good health? Nutrition: An adequate, well balanced diet is a cornerstone of good health. We wear on the outside what we put into our bodies. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, small changes in your daily routine can mean huge gains in health and fitness levels. Strength Training: Strength training makes you stronger, fitter and look good but it also protects bone health and muscle mass. The best bit… strength training translates to more calories burned. You burn calories during and post strength training and more calories are used to make and maintain muscle than fat, which can boost your metabolism and jumpstart fat loss! Sleep: With adequate sleep you’ll concentrate better and be in a great mood without the dark rings and bags under your eyes! Inadequate sleep makes you feel hungry even if you’re full due to the secretion of

Saturated fat causes heart disease….wrong! The truth is, saturated fats from animal and vegetable sources provide the building blocks for cell membranes and a variety of hormones and hormone-like substances, without which your body cannot function optimally. They also act as carriers for important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Dietary fats are also needed for mineral absorption and saturated fats are in fact the preferred fuel for your heart!

VET

PHARMACIST

Ever wondered what to feed your rabbit?

Heartburn and indigestion

Rabbits are great pets and make wonderful companions for children. Feeding is perhaps the single most important factor in maintaining a healthy rabbit. Wild rabbits eat grass and graze for six to eight hours a day; their entire digestive tract (including their teeth) is adapted to a diet of continual grazing. A rabbit’s teeth grow continuously throughout their life and they depend on food to help wear down the teeth and keep them in good shape. Many commercial rabbit foods do not contain enough fibre and also contain nuts and seeds which are high in energy and disrupt a rabbit’s gut health. So what happens if you feed a low quality diet full of seeds, fruits and corn? This can have a detrimental effect on your rabbit’s overall health. Dental disease is very common in rabbits and poor diet can cause abscesses around the mouth, long and painful teeth and bone infections. Rabbits commonly become arthritic due to being overweight and usually a high energy diet like nuts is to blame. So what should you be feeding your bunny? Try and keep it nice and simple and provide them with a ‘hay and vegies’ diet. Fresh grass or grass hay is essential and should contribute 80 per cent of a rabbit’s diet. The best hays are timothy, oaten, wheaten, pasture, paddock, meadow or ryegrass hays - avoid lucerne or clover hays as they are too high in protein and calcium. Fresh veggies are also great; as a rough guide, aim to feed around two packed cups of leafy greens per kilogram of body weight daily. Try to give at least three different varieties of vegetables – good vegetables to offer include broccoli, cabbage, celery, brussels, spinach leaves, bok choy and dark leafed lettuce varieties; avoid veggies like iceberg lettuce as they are very watery and can cause diarrhoea. Herbs like parsley, dandelion, coriander, basil and dill are also great! Rabbits should not be fed solely on pellets or mixes. If pellets are offered, consider them as treats and only give 1 tablespoon daily. The pellets should have more than 18 per cent fibre; a particularly good product is the ‘Oxbow’ rabbit pellets. Treats are great but only a small quantities – aim for 1-2 teaspoons per rabbit per day.

I wrote articles in recent weeks about gut issues including IBS and constipation. These conditions cause discomfort below the naval. When someone asks for advice about a “tummy” problem, we will ask is it below the naval or up near the ribs. If it is up near the ribs and higher, then we would consider indigestion or heartburn as the problem instead. Indigestion is the discomfort you can experience after eating such as gas, belching, cramps and nausea. The symptoms can also be made worse in times of stress. Indigestion is due to poor digestive health and can be rectified with a good probiotic supplement. Heartburn is the painful, burning feeling in the chest and throat you may experience after eating, and can be made worse by laying down, leaning forward or straining. Other symptoms may be the feeling of a lump deep in the throat, an acidic or bitter taste in the mouth, regurgitation of food or a dry cough. Often it is caused by stomach acid flowing back up the oesophagus (food pipe) due to the valve at the top of the stomach not closing properly. Otherwise, it is due to an ulcer in either the stomach or duodenum (the tube leading out of the stomach). A ‘germ’ may cause these ulcers and therefore diagnosis by your doctor can lead to permanent relief from heartburn. Some lifestyle tips for reducing indigestion and heartburn are: staying away from rich, spicy or fatty foods and limiting your intake of alcohol, cigarettes and coffee. Also, try to eat slowly, avoid over eating, eat two to three hours before bed and sleep with your head elevated. Whilst there is medication available without a prescription, do not think lightly about any pain in the chest. I knew someone who thought his chest pain was heartburn, but it was a heart attack. If you experience any discomfort in your chest, you should speak to your pharmacist or doctor.

He nudged his friend: “Watson, look up at the sky, tell me what you see.” Watson replied: “I see millions of stars.” Holmes asked: “What does that tell you?” Watson thought deeply, “Astronomically, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and billions of planets. Chronologically, I conclude the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and we are small. Meteorologically, I suspect tomorrow will be a beautiful day. What does it tell you Holmes?” Holmes quickly answered, “What it tells me, Watson you fool, is that some clown has stolen our tent!” Sometimes it’s easy to miss the obvious, especially when it comes to things about Jesus. Think of the many statements people have made about who Jesus was; great teacher; good man; political revolutionary; wise leader. Yet they all fail to see the clear truth about Jesus. In the Bible’s book of Matthew, when Jesus’ disciples are gathered around him, he puts to them the million dollar question; “Who do people say that I am?” They reply, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you,” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter’s answer is spectacularly simple and clear; “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” This truth, for better, would change the lives of millions of people. Find out the truth about Jesus for yourself so you too can say, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”!

Funding for “vital” community service CASSANDRA O’CONNOR @cassandra_o

reat Community Transport will be able to significantly expand their services after the Federal Government announced this week the organisation would receive additional funding. On Wednesday morning Lindsay MP, Fiona Scott and State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres, visited the Kingswood-based transport organisation to see the difference that an additional $169,000 will make. Great Community Transport’s Helen Walker explained that with the funding, the transport service would be able to open a new route for local seniors. “Currently we do 79,000 trips a year, taking seniors to different destinations across the Blue Mountains and Penrith,” she said. “With this new funding we will be able to increase that by 5,000 trips per year, including a new route to Bunnings and Chemist Warehouse so that seniors can buy small items from there.” Great Community Transport have 24

MPs visit Great Community Transport vehicles in their fleet and Ms Walker said the funding was excellently timed as a 25th vehicle is being donated on Monday by the Great Walk Foundation. Ms Scott commended the service and said that the funding was made available through the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program. “The Penrith area is growing and the Federal Government is proud to support local organisations such as Great Community Transport who provide vital services to our senior community,” she said. Mr Ayres added that community transport is an important part of the NSW transport sector.

Red Cross Volunteers OVER THE years our ‘Seniors of the Week’ for this week have cut, buttered, jammed and creamed thousands of scones for area’s local seniors visiting the morning melodies concerts at the Joan. Sue Gallagher, Joan Aubrey, Jan Hennell, Lyn Foster, Betty Watkins, Annette Higgins, Chris Bale, Jan Kelly, Pauline Glenfell and Evelyn Surgenor are Red Cross Volunteers who have been preparing morning tea for the monthly concerts for almost 25 years. The 10 women work as a very effective team, each taking on roles in the morning tea preparations, but what is more impressive is their friendship. The women have developed wonderful friendships over the years as they have bonded over their love of volunteering and serving the community. Nominate a deserving local for our Senior of the Week! KATE REID @kate_reid6

here’s something really romantic and glamorous about the past, particularly the 1960’s. The beauty, the fashion, the music, the culture, it’s enough to make anyone want to rummage through the nearest op shop and experiment with some black eyeliner. Well now’s your chance to learn how to do it properly. Penrith Regional Gallery and Lewers Bequest will be hosting ‘London Calling: The mods and rockers answering the best of 1960’s British Style’, a vintage style session presented by Chrissy Keepence from the Lindy Charm School for Girls. Any woman from the age of 14 up is welcome to attend the three hour session where you’ll get an education in not only the style of the time, but also the manners and poise that one needs to be a true 60’s bombshell. You’ll learn not only what to wear but also how to style your hair and do your makeup to recreate this vintage look. During the early 50’s modesty and wholesomeness reined supreme, but by the mid 60’s things were becoming a little, well, sexier. This period saw women become a little more adventurous with their style; think shorter hair and darker eye makeup.

T

Is London calling you? The youth subculture was split into two group: the mods and the rockers. The rockers were known for their motorcycle obsession, which heavily influenced their look, while the mods were more like the modern day hipster, cool and trendy, with tailored suits and a love of soul, ska, rhythm and blues. ‘London Calling’ will be on at Penrith Regional Gallery on Sunday, June 22 from 12pm-3pm. Tickets to the event are $85 and bookings are essential. For more information call 4735 1100 or visit www.penrithregionalgallery.org.

TAFE offers a variety of paths to ensure you reach your goals rom a young age, former TAFE student Peter Boutros had a strong interest in problem solving and a fascination with construction, which led him to choose a career in structural engineering. But when he didn’t get into his chosen university course he discovered another way to get ahead. “I spoke to a few people including a structural engineer I met on a work site. He went to TAFE before university. He said that TAFE was a good stepping stone to university and people from TAFE did very well at university,” Peter said. Peter went on to complete the

Advanced Diploma of Structural Engineering at TAFE WSI and then the honours program of the Bachelor of Civil Engineering at Sydney University. His TAFE qualification gave him credit into his university studies and also additional skills which he believes helped him to excel at university and placed him in front of his peers. ongratulations, you’ve done all the hard work – you’ve completed school, training or university successfully, you’ve applied for work, you’ve finally landed your first ‘real’ job… now what do you do? Entering the workforce after a number of years with your head in the books can obviously be a very exciting but daunting experience at the same time. There are a number of ways to make your transition from student to employee far more comfortable for yourself and the people around you if you prepare yourself and follow some very simple advice. • Firstly and quite simply, first impressions count. Dress code is super important especially in the first few weeks of a new job. If you aren’t too sure what to wear on your first day, take a peek at some of your fellow workmates and get some inspiration off them. Make sure you dress accordingly to the job you are doing, and try not to stand out too much. • Another helpful tip is to do your research about the company and job you’re about to undertake. Having some background knowledge

Dress to impress on your first day on your workplace can be very beneficial in the short and long term. Knowing what tasks may arise for you over time will also help you as well. • Not many people are fans of paper work and the admin side of things but you really should be.
