SPECIAL REPORT

Steps taken to shed light on darkness that is suicide Suicide and depression are difficult topics to talk about. That’s why one local group is holding a walk around the Nepean River instead – to raise awareness and start a dialogue. KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

ith suicide named as the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15 and 44, there is no doubt that more support is needed for those who are vulnerable. Networks and places of support are out there but the stigma surrounding the issue means that suicide is not widely talked about in the community and a lack of dialogue can have disastrous effects. A group of local residents are bringing the issue of suicide “out of the shadows and into the light” this weekend, with an annual Lifeline-supported walk along the Nepean River. Those participating are not part of any particular group or organisation, in fact, many are just regular, local people who have struggled or are struggling with depression and want to build a support network in the Penrith community that they and others who are affected can trust. Life-long local resident Jay McGarrity,

30, has coordinated the annual Penrith Out Of The Shadows walk for three years, driven by his own personal experience. “I have struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts since my early teenage years,” he told the Weekender. “I had that stigma of blaming myself, disappointment that I wasn’t stronger and that I was being selfish because others surely have it worse than me; it sends you into a downward spiral and you can find yourself in a very dark place.” That dark place is one that he still slips into from time to time but though the struggle is ongoing, the support of organisations like Lifeline as well as educated and compassionate family and friends – a good support base – those dark times “aren’t so lonely,” which he says makes all the difference. “I understand this better now and I know depression and suicidal thoughts are not something to be shameful of. I personally don’t want anyone to go through that internal pain and wish to help in any way possible,” he said. “We can find strength and support in numbers and these events are a great way to get that education out there while building a local support network.”

While Lifeline’s Out Of The Shadows campaign is about encouraging people to talk about suicide and create support networks that have the potential to save lives, a large part of the campaign is about educating the public about suicide and the preventative measures that can be taken. Joint coordinator of the local walk, 28-year-old Glenmore Park resident, Jess Morton, comes face to face with the issue of suicide regularly as the National Community Engagement Executive for Student Paramedics Australasia (SPA). In this role, she is required to raise awareness of depression and support paramedic students who are embarking on a career path that has a higher than normal suicide rate. As a result, she is passionate about educating the community on the issue. “I’m a nurse and a student paramedic and suicide is something that I am constantly confronted with. I am passionate about dispelling the myths surrounding suicide and helping those understand how it feels to be suicidal. It is not a selfish act, but one out of desperation where the person who attempts or completes suicide cannot see any other way to end their pain,” she said. “Suicide still has a lot of stigma and most

It sends you into a downward spiral and you can find yourself in a dark place

Over 2,500 Australians commit suicide each year. “Last year was the first time I had heard about the event. My sister and I went and it was a very humbling experience listening to the stories of those who have been left behind, battled their own suicidal thoughts or survived an attempt,” Ms Morton said. “I was keen to get SPA involved and [the walk] is obviously something I believe can make a difference. There were about 10 or

so walkers last year. We have set a goal for 100 this year but we would love to see so many more in the ‘yellow army’.” The event is taking place in the wake of World Suicide Prevention Day, which was held on Wednesday, September 10. “Too many people are dying from suicide in Australia, over 2,500 each year. If you think someone might be suicidal, take the time to connect and listen to them – this

shows you care. Ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide, and encourage them to get help by calling or chatting to Lifeline,” said Lifeline Australia CEO John Brogden. If you need help, for 24 hour crisis support call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Online crisis support chat is also available every night from 8pm at www.lifeline.org. au/get-help.

special report

people do not like to talk about it. To aid prevention, we need to talk about it and bring it into the light.” With no donations collected at this weekend’s walk, the event is purely about raising awareness of the prevalence of suicide and how it can be prevented, as well as building on the local support network. It is open to all local people, including those who have personal experiences with suicide, either involving themselves or a loved one, and those who are simply passionate about reducing the stigma surrounding the issue. “Suicide and depression effects so many. People can sometimes feel isolated with friends and family, who may not have the tools or the knowledge to identify the signs or offer help. This event is all about pointing people in the right direction and showing there is a solid local community support network available,” Mr McGarrity said. A large part of the walk is also about giving local people a chance to share their own experiences, which is something that many of those who attend have never had an opportunity to do. “The subject is very emotional but we tackle it in a very open, honest and compassionate manner,” Mr McGarrity said. Those who want to take part in the walk, which is being held at 11am on Saturday, September 13, beginning from the boat ramp off Tench Avenue, along the Nepean River can RSVP by visiting www.outoftheshadows.org.au or via Facebook. The walk is not about getting fit and won’t be strenuous at all – there will even be refreshments served at half-way.

FEATURE STORY

Multi-talented Damien Leith is clearly no one trick pony ost people will know Damien Leith as the winner of the 2006 series of ‘Australian Idol’, and though he has found a successful career in the music industry Leith’s bio covers more than just the one creative endeavour. From hosting duties on TV shows like ‘Saving Kids’, ‘New Idea Test Kitchen’ and ‘Great Easter Feasts’, to flexing his creative writing muscles as a novelist including One More Time and Remember June, Leith is clearly no one trick pony.

impressive resume and has maintained a successful career in the music industry in the years since his 2006 ‘Idol’ win. With the abundance of reality music shows – and hence, reality music show contestants – since that time, Leith believes the best advice he can pass on to budding artists is to understand that it’s not only about the music. “Everybody, myself included, we all go into it because we love music and we love all that sort of stuff – that’s your drive. But the business side is the most important part to really get a handle on,” he said. “Because that’s the thing that kind of makes and breaks people; or makes careers or doesn’t make careers; or just keeps work coming in on whatever level you want to be at. “It’s knowing the business. You’ve got to understand it as soon as you possibly can.” Looking over his musical back catalogue, which includes both original songs and covers, Leith has particularly fond memories of his experience creating one

album above all others. “Definitely a highlight for me was my Roy album,” he said, referring to 2011’s ‘Roy: A Tribute to Roy Orbison’. “It was a special album. I got to fly to Nashville and I worked with Barbara Orbison and I worked with a lot of people associated with Roy and actually a very special friend of mine, a guy called Joe Melson. “I’ve been writing with him for the last two years because of that album and Joe Melson was Roy’s main co-writer. “Things like that are just incredible. When things like that happen you just don’t expect it and it’s all because of that album. “I’ve learnt so much from him now, he’s an absolute mentor to me and opportunities like that generally don’t come around. It’s just been fantastic.” Damien Leith will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, October 17. Tickets are $35. To purchase tickets visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au or for more information call 9625 5500.

“I find it very hard to sit still,” he said. “I like to give things a go for better or for worse. Some of them work really well, other times not so well but I love to just give things a go because you don’t know if you’re going to like it until you at least try it, so that’s always been my motto.” Give it a go he did during the process of creating his latest album, 2013’s ‘Chapter Seven’. Leith not only wrote the music, but he also built a recording studio and took on the role of producer, ensuring that he was involved in the process every step of the way. “It was just a whole different area for me, and really rewarding. I think I’m more attached to this album than I am to any of my previous albums because I was so involved in it on so many levels,” he said. Leith describes the album, his seventh studio release, as ‘folk pop’, drawing together elements of both genres to create a more stripped back album. “Each song is a little mini story and I’ve kind of tried to keep the acoustic and the organic instruments really present on this album,” he said. More recently Leith has taken his show on the road with the ‘Without A Fight’ tour, which has seen the talented singer/songwriter playing venues across Australia. The tour has clearly been a success with encore shows being added, including a gig at Rooty Hill RSL in October. “With the encore shows we’re really just trying to make sure we’ve gone everywhere that we could go,” he said. “We’ve had a great run and it’s been great doing original stuff as well. I love doing all the covers but it’s been really nice to get out there and play mainly my own songs and the audience have been really enjoying it.” Leith has been recognised for his music talents with five ARIA Award wins, including Highest Selling Album and Highest Selling Single, along with nominations for MTV Australia Video Music Awards and Helpmann Awards. Time’s up on Fuel TV and SPEED As revealed in this column a few weeks ago Channel Ten are launching an Australian version of the US hit ‘Shark Tank’. Ten confirmed the series will air in 2015. ‘Shark Tank’ sees well-known entrepreneurs investing their own money in inventions and business plans pitched to them by local inventors and business hopefuls. Ten are set to reveal their tank of ‘Sharks’ soon.

On November 3, Fox Sports will launch two new channels, Fox Sports 4 and Fox Sports 5. The new channels, which will be available in HD, will replace existing channels Fuel TV and SPEED, which will no doubt upset motorsport and adventure sport fans. However it’s understood content from both those departing channels will be transferred.

Hot on the heels of ‘Full House’ making a comeback, another classic TV show remake is on its way with news Fox is set to reboot ‘The Greatest American Hero’. It’s understood the network has already ordered a pilot to be made so it could become a reality for fans.

MTV’s latest comedy offering ‘Faking It’ could be a real hit. The eight-part series is about two best friends mistakenly seen by friends as lesbians and nominated as homecoming queens. But do they have feelings for each other? It starts September 15, 8.30pm.

The ABC has created controversy and axed drama ‘The Time of Our Lives’, which starred popular actors Shane Jacobson and Claudia Karvan. It’s widely believed poor ratings was the reason for the show’s demise but in a statement the ABC blamed “finite funding levels”.

It was very sad to learn of the death of legendary US comedian Joan Rivers last week at age 81. Rivers made a living from having the guts to say the things other people were too scared to say. In recent years her stardom continued to rise as host of the popular E! show ‘Fashion Police’.

Music TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES RATED M

Starring: Megan Fox and Will Arnett Now screening at Hoyts Penrith A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 RATED MA

Starring: Marlon Wayans and Jaime Pressly Marlon Wayans – the youngest Wayans brother and star of the Scary Movie franchise – sure does seem to love acting in scary comedies. If you share Wayans’ love for comedies with a horror twist then ‘A Haunted House 2’ is for you. This creepy comedy is the sequel to 2013’s ‘A Haunted House’ and sees character Malcolm, played by Wayans, moving on with his new girlfriend Megan, played by Jaime Pressly, after his ex was possessed by a demon. It seems Malcolm just can’t catch a break though, as the new home he shares with Megan and her two children starts to display some rather disturbing paranormal tendencies. For one, the family dog is crushed by a safe within minutes of arriving at the new home and there’s the usual creepy doll whose head turns by itself. Also in the mix is a crazy priest. The film also stars comedian, actor and director Cedric the Entertainer and comedian Gabriel Iglesias.

Fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been hanging out for this one and it’s finally here. After releasing several feature films in the 90s the turtles are back with the newest reboot from famed producer Michael Bay. Another in a long line of comic book film adaptations the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise includes the original comic, a cartoon series, toys and video games. Once again New York City is in need of saving. Shredder and his Foot Clan have control of the authorities and it’s up to the four turtle brothers to take back the city. They team up with reporter April O’Neil, played by ‘Transformers’ star Megan Fox and cameraman Vern Fenwick, played by funny man Will Arnett, to attempt to save the city from Shredder’s evil clutches. Fans will be sitting on the edge of their seats. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is directed by Jonathan Liebesman who also directed ‘Battle Los Angeles’, ‘Wrath of the Titans’ and ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning’.

MEGAN WASHINGTON THERE, THERE Out Now Megan Washington found a huge amount of success with her debut album ‘I Believe You Liar’ in 2010, which saw the singer/ songwriter win ARIAs for Best Female Artist and Breakthrough Artist. Now she’s back with the sophomore release ‘There There’. One of the strengths of Megan’s music has always been her way with words, which saw her win the Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition for her track ‘How To Tame Lions’. As a songwriter her lyrical content is emotional, honest and poetic. From the tracks that have been released so far from ‘There There’ it seems that Megan is just as open about her life as ever before. The track ‘Who Are You’ has a contagious beat that provides the foundation for Megan’s beautiful vocals, which proclaim poetic truths like ‘sometimes nothing’s the worst thing you can say’. ‘Limitless’ has an 80’s pop feel to it while ‘Begin Again’ is a simple, stripped-back, piano ballad where Megan pours her heart out, giving listeners just as much of herself as she did on ‘I Believe You Liar’.

If you’re feeling hungry you might want to start your day with the Maze Big Breakfast that includes bacon, eggs, chipolata sausage, roasted field mushroom, hash brown, vine ripened tomatoes and haloumi and is served with toasted Turkish bread. For starters there’s plenty to choose from including bruschetta, trio of dips, chilli prawns and the vegetable and haloumi stack. Then it’s onto mains where every taste is catered for with options like the Greek style lamb shoulder, slowly braised with garlic and rosemary served on roasted potatoes, green beans and pan jus; or the slowly roasted pork belly served with roasted potatoes, wilted baby spinach and apple compote. For those that prefer the classics there’s the beef pot pie, steak sandwich or everyone’s favourite, chicken schnitzel.

T

Maze Bistro With an all new menu, there’s no better way to herald the start of spring than with a splash of alfresco dining at Nepean Rowing Club The bistro also has a selection of pasta and rissotto dishes, salads and a range of sides. On the kids menu there’s all the childhood favourites including spaghetti bolognaise, battered fish with lemon and chips and the chicken strips and chips.

The bistro is great value with plenty of specials on offer to cater for the whole family, including kids and seniors. The Maze Bistro is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner as well as breakfast from 8am to 10.30am on Saturday and Sunday.

WINE

A capital shiraz from the cold climate DAVID ELLIS

LOCAL RADIO

he Canberra wine growing region is interesting in that while it doesn’t always leap to front of mind, it does boasts something like 140 vineyards and 33 wineries. And it produces cool climate wines that are more often than not, wonderfully rewarding. While it was first planted in the 1840s, those early pioneering efforts around Gunning and Yass didn’t last long, and it took a long-awaited 1970’s “rebirth” to lead to today’s many successes there. Amongst them is Shaw Vineyard Estate that, at Murrumbateman, is amongst the highestelevated in the region, and has been producing exceptional and affordably-priced premium cool-climates since the 1990’s. A particularly rewarding, just-released 2012 Shaw Shiraz (a variety the region is renowned for) is possibly one of owner Graeme Shaw’s best-yet – despite coming from one of the region’s wettest and more difficult vintages. Graeme has coaxed wonderful ripe berry-fruit aromas, forward Shiraz spice and pepper notes from this drop, and these are reflected nicely with ripe tannins on the smooth palate. Pay $25 and enjoy with barbecued red meats and a side of pan-fried mushrooms. One to note: Jacob’s Creek has added an interesting new drop to its diverse portfolio of Aussie sparklings – a “less bubbly” called Sparkling Lightly that it says will “dance lightly on the palate”. The wine is the result of surveys revealing there are some amongst us to whom experience a full feeling after enjoying a sparkly. Pay $14.99 if you like your bubbles, but want room in your stomach to spare!

VOLUNTEER TODAY PRIMARY ETHICS TEACHERS NEEDED

To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

“

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

”

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved.

life & style

While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices.

Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

Learn from the best with social media KATHERINE TWEED

life & style

But it is not all about the work for Bambi, who regularly travels long distances, away from family and friends. “[Social media] is the best way for me to keep in touch with home and all my friends as I travel so much. I love being able to see where they are in the world at any point in time and what they are up to. It just makes me feel always connected,” she said. The model also has a strong selfie game – you can judge for yourself by taking a look her own Instagram (@bambilegit) or Impulse’s page (@ImpulseFragrancesAUS) – which is key to a good Instagram page. “Some people say it’s about angles but I think it’s about lighting and of course a good fliter. Long limbs help too – Erin (Heatherton) is really good at it because she has such long arms,” she exclaimed. If you need some inspiration, whether it be fitness, fashion, lifestyle or hair and makeup, these Victoria’s Secret Angels have the perfect pages to check out. For fitness check out Izabel Goulart (@iza_goulart). Need motivation to get out of bed? Follow Candice Swanepoel (@angelcandices) on Instagram.

katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

Having a strong ‘selfie game’ is pivotal to creating a good Instagram account

I have a small obsession with models. It is something that began at a young age, when I was first introduced to fashion magazines and now into adulthood has been spurred on by social media. When I say social media, the most influential platform for my obsession would have to be Instagram, which I use to follow the lives of a plethora of the world’s most beautiful and celebrated people. I follow Miranda Kerr for her impeccable off-duty style, I follow Candice Swanepoel because I am amazed at how perfect she is and I follow Cara Delevingne because her photos show the behind-the-scenes of her life, which is something you don’t often get on Instagram. While I follow these models – and a long list of others, I might add – because of their beauty and their glamorous worlds, I am still kept engaged by the way they run their social media pages. They show their fashion – both on and off-duty, and personal makeup styles, upload images of events and in some cases even fitness and health tips. Australian Model Bambi Northwood-Blyth is one of those who has a great social media technique, which is something that everyone can learn from when setting up their own social media page to share their style with others. Bambi shares mostly off-duty photos, mixed in with photo shoot shots from various magazines and campaigns and while her photos are gorgeous – though, it would be hard not to have gorgeous photos with a face like that – you still get a sense of her personality. As part of her new role as the face of Impulse, the model took over the brand’s Instagram page last week, posting images of her day-to-day activities, her style and her inspiration. “Connecting with fans is very important to me, and useful, too! It’s almost as if I have my own focus group. If I put up one picture that gets 1,000 likes and one that gets 15,000 likes, it gives me a big clue as to what people like to see,” she said. “I’m always amazed when I check my Twitter feed or Facebook page and see someone from half the world away reaching out to say they enjoyed my work.”

designs make a diamond appear bigger than it really is

Dazzling diamonds: affordable luxury This month at York Jewellers we have some of the most beautiful engagement rings at fantastic, affordable prices. It’s all about affordable luxury. Dazzling Diamond month is a great time to look at getting ready for Christmas with that special gift, or if you’re thinking about popping the question over the summer now is the time to come searching for the perfect engagement ring. You don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune to have a beautiful looking engagement ring and I’ll explain why. A huge trend of late is the halo. Whether it’s on a classic single stone engagement ring, trilogy ring, stud earrings or a pendant, the diamond halo is the perfect way to enhance your diamond to create a bigger look without blowing the budget. The idea of the halo design is to have a fine border of diamonds around the centre stone, nice and tight with minimal gaps in order to maximize the sparkle and make the diamond look as though it’s bigger than it is. When this is done correctly it yields a beautiful result! The Dazzling Diamond collection includes a pear shape diamond, cushion cuts, a princess cut and round brilliant cuts all set with a sparkling halo or in some cases a double halo. There are some with diamonds on the band and some without, even one with a hint of rose gold, which means there’s really something for everyone in this really affordable and quality collection. I’m really excited that we are able to bring you a stunning collection in which the price doesn’t exceed over $7,000 but the sparkle looks double that! Hurry in because these won’t last long. If you would like to view the catalogue you can head to www. yorkjewellers.com.au and download it from our website. We will also be sharing some of the engagement rings with our fans on Facebook at Facebook.com.yorkjewellers. Like us to keep updated! On another note, congratulations to the winner of our Father’s Day Facebook competition for winning their Dad an Edox watch valued at $1,100! What a fantastic prize, we hope that he enjoys wearing it.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

You’re keen to call the shots but there’s a big difference between leading others and just being bossy. Domineering behaviour will lead to dramas so slip on your humility hat this week, as Venus encourages you to be consultative. Are you single and looking for love? Expect a fated meeting with a mercurial type who is a good talker.

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Romantic relationships, professional partnerships and money matters are favoured so make the most of the auspicious stars. It’s also a wonderful week to mix business with pleasure. Emotional connections are intensified, as Pluto deepens your affections. You’ll also gain profound psychological insights into a friend.

Spontaneous Sagittarius, you have a natural knack for putting your foot firmly in your mouth. With Venus visiting your career zone, patching up problems with work colleagues will be easier now than at other times. You have more tact and diplomacy than usual, so make sure you’re using it. It’s also time to articulate your goals and dreams for the future. You can’t hit a target if you haven’t got one!

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

A close relationship has the potential to develop and deepen as long as you can let go of the past and learn to trust again. Expect a surge of Crab creativity on the weekend, as Venus and Saturn help you turn an abstract idea into a productive long-term project. Listen to Lauren Bacall: “Imagination is the highest kite one can fly.”

Don’t come on too strong Capricorn! Pluto boosts your persuasive powers this week, as you encourage someone over to your point-of-view with a sound and convincing argument. It’s a wonderful weekend for work, business and social networking, as Venus and Saturn increase your creativity and concentration.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Are you having problems? With Jupiter jumping through your sign, learn to put a positive spin on a perceived failure. With energy and enthusiasm, you can turn a pig’s ear into a beautiful silk purse! You’re keen to help others but promising more than you can deliver is a danger this weekend Lions. Pace yourself and take baby steps.

Avoid taking short cuts this week Aquarius, especially at work. A slap-dash attitude only means you’ll have to do things twice. A pinch of patience and a dash of discipline sees you tick all the boxes. Then get out of the house or office and into the great outdoors so you can tune into the world around you.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

With the Sun and Venus visiting Virgo (and a boost from Pluto and Saturn) it’s your time to shine! Teaching and public speaking are favoured, as you display your leadership skills and creative talents for all to see. Opportunities for advancement come via connections within your local community.

Your intuition helps you find appropriate ways to handle a delicate situation with a worried loved one or a frazzled friend. Don’t underestimate your ability to advise and console. Attached Fish – the Sun and Venus are visiting your relationship zone, so it’s time to zero in on your partner and their needs.

cage egg really cost?

ANTHONY WALKER Owner-Manager Bank of Queensland. Anthony.walker@ boq.com.au You wouldn’t keep your pet like this. But hidden away in sheds across Australia, hens who are just as smart and sensitive as the family pet spend every waking moment in a cage — all for the sake of a cheap egg. with an untreated broken bone. But trapped in a cage, in a shed with thousands of cages, no-one is ever likely to notice. Here she will spend 30 long hours to produce just one cage egg. The first time she will see the outside world — the world she was meant to live in — will be on the last day of her life, as she is trucked to the slaughterhouse.

Blogs are a great way to keep your website fresh with new information

Marketing without spending money While there are a number of business finance options available to help new ventures off the ground, it can instead be beneficial to embrace close-fisted tendencies when undertaking certain business functions. In particular, rather than cutting back on important things like employee engagement and client retention, here are four ways to effectively market your business without spending any money! Free press release sites If you have something to say about your company, make sure the world gets a chance to hear it. Try approaching a free press release site, such as PRLog.com. Services like this distribute your news online at no charge to your business. The kind of news that is ideal for press releases can be as simple as taking on a new staff member, expanding into a new market or an initiative that could benefit other businesses. Get connected Are you making the most of social media? Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are fun, easy and inexpensive ways to connect your brand with consumers. However, an effective social media campaign should involve more than just corporate advertising. Instead, try offering your followers personal, unique and interesting content. Start up a blog Chances are you already have a website. But what are you doing with this valuable piece of internet real estate? If your site just sits there with the same old content, you’ll quickly find yourself lost in the search engine results. Avoid falling beyond the first few pages by keeping your site updated with regular content. As an additional bonus, a blog used to share thoughts on news stories and popular trends can potentially draw a whole new audience to your page. Get involved with the community Corporate sponsorship is not just about big brands handing out big money. Even those organisations with little resources can make a positive difference and get their name out there at the same time. For example, you could offer your staff as linesmen for local youth sports matches or make a donation to the local sporting club.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

BREE AGLIARO Motivational videos can help inspire you

Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Drink plenty of water daily (it makes you feel lighter and healthier). 2. Find something simple that makes you happy and do it every day (whether it be reading before bed, a lunch time walk, a coffee and protein bar for morning tea, a phone call to your mum, training, anything). 3. Be organised. Prepare your food the night before and pack your training bag (lay your training clothes out before bed time so you have no excuses not to turn up to training). Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

A daily ‘must do’? Be organised. Prepare your food the night before and pack a lunch box so that you stay focused and don’t get hungry and reach for whatever food you can get your hands on. Biggest health/fitness misconception?

That girls with muscles are ugly! Who cares what people think! Girls should be strong and proud of being fit and healthy and there is nothing wrong with tone and definition in females. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? It makes you feel really good; it gives you self-confidence and self-belief. Feeling good makes you happy, gives you more energy and keeps you feeling positive.

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy.’ I am extremely lucky that I am a motivated person so I don’t need much external motivation. Being a personal trainer/ group fitness instructor, your clients keep you motivated when you see them hitting personal bests and training hard during sessions. It inspires you to want to be a better trainer/person. I couldn’t imagine fitness not being a part of my life. I feel on top of the world when I’m at my fittest. I also watch a lot of motivational videos and do a bit of research about fitness and fitness athletes that inspire me in the fitness world so when I’m on struggle street I find this kicks me in the right direction. Plus having an awesome support system and training buddy keeps me on track each day.

life & style

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Body building style controlled weights, high intensity functional training and outdoor cardio sessions such as stairs and sprints.

How does fitness feature in your life? I am the Assistant Manager at the Penrith YMCA and have specialised in Personal Training and Group Fitness Instructing here for seven years. I have tried many different training styles to find the one that suits my body. I love body building training and combine it with Olympic lifts and cardio interval training throughout my weekly sessions. I have learnt that not everyone is going to agree with the training style/styles you follow and that is okay.

I have a friend who runs a daycare centre in the city that’s part of a large business complex. They recently had an irate couple asking why their child was given toast because they are ‘paleo’ and the 12-month-old won’t be healthy if it is given grains. It’s great that parents take an interest in their child’s food but maybe they could consider other things that make a child healthy. It turns out this power couple is pretty high up corporate wise and put in long hours at the job. So long in fact the baby is pretty much at the door waiting when the daycare opens and last to leave a minute before closing and has already been attending daycare for many months. I’m guessing when they get home after a 12-hour day there isn’t a couple of hours of games and interaction for baby before bed. Likewise in the morning before getting taken in again. Sometimes people get a bit caught up in the latest health trend and over look the obvious. If health was an absolute priority to this couple why wasn’t there a whole lot more contact time for the baby, and if you want the best diet why wasn’t he being breastfed at all? Maybe that’s not ‘in’ at the moment. What kind of priority and attachment is a baby getting from so much time in childcare? It’s important for a child to feel a secure attachment, as this causes the parts of your baby’s brain responsible for social and emotional development, communication, and relationships to grow and develop. It’s the foundation of a child’s ability to connect with others in a healthy way. Qualities you take for granted in adult relationships like empathy, understanding, love, and the ability to be responsive to others are first learned in infancy. It also helps to develop the ability to have fulfilling, intimate relationships. It maintains emotional balance and helps them feel confident and good about themselves and enjoy being with others. And just think, if they were feeding the baby themselves they would have been able to make sure no-one else is giving their child any toast! Do you have your child’s health in perspective?

Painful prostate problems in dogs

Are you part of God’s big family?

We are often asked why male dogs should be desexed. There are several main reasons; the first is because it reduces undesired behaviours such as escaping, inappropriate mounting, urine marking and aggression. However, there are also several medical benefits to desexing – the most important of these is reducing the chances of males getting a painful infection known as prostatitis. Prostatitis is an infection of the prostate gland. The prostate gland is a male reproductive organ that sits behind the bladder. As males age, the testosterone (male hormone) causes the prostate to enlarge in size. This condition is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia. An enlarged prostate can cause discomfort as it compresses the rectum and can make it difficult for dogs to defecate. Enlarged prostates are also more likely to become infected and can develop abscesses inside them. This is a very painful condition and can be difficult to treat. Desexing dogs at a young age prevents the prostate gland from enlarging and causing discomfort. Even desexing adult dogs will rapidly shrink the prostate gland and prevent this kind of disease. What are the signs of prostatitis? Early signs include straining to urinate or have a bowel movement. Dogs can also urinate frequently and only pass a small amount each time. In the later stages when the infection becomes advanced, dogs can develop a fever, become lethargic and have a poor appetite. Can it be treated? Prostatitis can often be treated with long courses of antibiotics. However, desexing must be performed to reduce the size of the prostate and make the infection easier to battle. However, sometimes prostatitis can be very difficult to treat if the infection is severe. Thankfully, desexing at a young age will prevent the majority of prostatitis disease in dogs. Desexing reduces the testosterone levels and dramatically reduces the prostate size and prevents enlargement in the first place. Father’s Day has come and gone, and while some may simply see it as just a commercial cash grab, many appreciate it as a time to celebrate and enjoy family. Of course, not all families are ideal and of course all families have their ups and downs, but despite this, family continues to be held out by our world as one of THE big ideals. It is the dream of many to be part of a family who love, cherish and value one another. And here’s the thing; while the Bible highly values family, it is tells us that no matter who or what your earthly family might be like, to be part of God’s eternal family, to be one of His children, one of God’s sons or daughters, one of Jesus’ brothers or sisters – it doesn’t get any better! Any person who will put their faith in Jesus is a child of God; a member of God’s family. This means that you can call God, “Father” – an amazing privilege! You can talk to Him. He will listen to you. He loves you. He forgives you. He will never leave you. He gives you His wisdom to help you make decisions. He sticks by you in hard times. He stands by you in every circumstance and equips and helps you to stand in every circumstance. He grieves with you when you grieve. He gives you His home, Heaven, to share with Him when you leave this earth. He comforts you when you are down. He thinks of you as special, precious, treasured. He is our loving Heavenly Father. What an extraordinary privilege to be part of Jesus’ family!

Russia’s Trans-Siberian Express takes a whole week to cover 9,259km from Moscow to Vladivostok, the longest daily or weekly passenger train journey in the world. Image: Trans-Siberian Railways If you were asked what is the longest daily or weekly passenger train journey in the world and you nominated the Indian Pacific between Sydney and Perth, you’d be – shall we say – way off track. The Indian Pacific straddles a mere 4,373km across Australia and takes just 2.5 days to do it. Whereas the Trans-Siberian Express from Moscow to Vladivostok takes a whole week to cover 9,259km with some 67 stops along the way. And the world’s second-longest train journey also starts or ends in Moscow – as, remarkably, does the third. That second-longest trip runs from Moscow

to Beijing via Harbin in China and covers 8,984km over six days with 44 stops, while the third-longest also links Moscow with Beijing but by way of Ulan Bator in Mongolia – a distance of 7,826km over 5.5 days and with 33 stops. And though you’d think America, with its size, would also be up there amongst the top handful of long-distance daily or weekly passenger train services, in fact its longest journey comes in at number eight out of the top 10. The trip from Chicago to Los Angeles covers 4,390km and takes 3 days – just pipping Shanghai to Lhasa at 4,373km in 9th place, and our Indian Pacific by 38km and a half-day in 10th spot.

Pram Push and Family Fun Day not to be missed KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

P

enrith residents will this month have the opportunity to support a local organisation working to fund life-changing research

programs. The Australian Women and Children’s Research Foundation, OZWAC, is set to host their second annual Family Fun Day, Great River Walk and Penrith Pram Push on Sunday, September 21 at Tench Reserve. There will be a three kilometre walk and ‘Pram Push’ on the day as well as market stalls, food, music, entertainment and activities for the kids, including jumping castles and plaster painting, with all proceeds supporting the work of OZWAC. Former ‘Big Brother’ winner, Tim Dormer will be officially starting the walk.

The OZWAC Family Fun Day is being held at Tench Reserve

‘

“The concept of the walk was to create an event that encouraged people to get outdoors, do something active and experience the beautiful Nepean River,” said OZWAC Chairperson, Simon Gould. “The idea of the Pram Push was to make the day representative of what OZWAC stands for: research into the health of women and children.” The funds donated to OZWAC are allocated to research projects relating to the health and wellbeing of women, children and families, with many of these projects carried out in western Sydney. A recent project funded by the organisation, which was a study to discover what goes wrong with the immune system in pre-eclampsia, was published in the American Journal of Reproductive Immunology. “While we’re a local charity, the results of what we help achieve are truly global in their reach,” Mr Gould said. The organisation is hoping that this year’s Family Fun Day will raise $5,000. Local residents are invited to register their involvement online by visiting www. ozwac.com.au/calendar-of-events/ and following the prompts. Registration on the day will be open from 8am.
