COVER STORY
Miller-Heidke’s not scared of “freaking out” people Talented singer and songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke brings her unique sound to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre next month and is prepared to create a few ripples.
f you read enough articles about music you’ll start to notice the same words used many times over to describe different artists. That’s why it’s refreshing when you come across a phrase like the one best selling author Neil Gaiman used to describe singer/songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke. After hearing Kate’s voice Gaiman said it was like “being f****d by butterflies”.
I
KATE REID @kate_reid6
“It was excellent and that’s probably one of my favourite comments as well,” MillerHeidke said. “It’s so supremely evocative. You can’t help but feel a bit of a fluttering,” she laughed. Kate Miller-Heidke is very much deserving of such a description. She uses her classically trained voice to add an operatic element to her alt-pop music, but it’s not all beauty and light. “I guess I have a relatively experimental approach to using my voice and I’ve probably got a bigger range of dynamics and tones and just fun stuff to use my voice as an instrument and play around with it,” she said. “I think I probably do that more than most other singer/songwriters, particularly in a live context, it’s fun to use those textures to kind of freak people out,” she laughed. Miller-Heidke’s performances are theatrical, intriguing and beautiful, and come August the talented songstress will be bringing her live show to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre. “I always play in Sydney but I just want to make sure I’ve got the suburbs covered,” she said. Joining her will be her full band, which includes husband and musical soul mate Keir Nuttall. The two have been long time collaborators and, as with any partnership, there’s positives and negatives to spending so much time together. “I think because we know each other so well and you know we’re best friends we’re definitely on the same musical wave length and we can, onstage, we play together so much that we can almost communicate without words – without sounding cheesy,” Miller-Heidke said. “But yeah obviously we send each other a bit insane and it’s nice to have the rest of the band and the crew as a bit of a buffer zone sometimes.” The August tour will see Miller-Heidke performing tracks from her album ‘O Vertigo!’ which was released in March this year. The album, her fourth studio release, came after her split with Sony. MillerHeidke decided to produce the album

using crowd-funding through PledgeMusic. “It was incredible and yeah, the support I got through that was overwhelming. That was definitely a positive experience,” she said. Though, Miller-Heidke seems keen to explore other avenues for future projects. “I’m not sure if I would do it again next time. I think the world is changing so quickly and the music industry... it seems like it’s constantly in a state of flux. So who knows where we’ll be in six months,” she said. “I don’t think I can go back and ask those same people for money again. I’m going to need to figure out a different plan next time,” she laughed. After the tour Miller-Heidke will be heading off to the UK for a string of shows before she makes her way to New York in October where she will perform with the Metropolitan Opera. The talented singer is also currently writing a children’s opera for Opera Australia. “It’s a new opera, adapting a book by Shaun Tan called The Rabbits and yeah I guess they kind of just took a leap of faith in asking me but I’ve loved being involved,” she said. While speaking to Miller-Heidke about
the types of music and musicians that inspire her you start to see that her path was never going to be one that involved predictable performances or mainstream pop songs. “I saw a guy called Kirin J Callinan. He’s from Sydney actually. I saw him perform last week at the NGV and it was absolutely electrifying. It was so dangerous and that was really thrilling to watch,” she said. “I like music that transports me or tells a story. I really like the theatre. I’m going to see ‘Into The Woods’ next month, which I’m very excited about. So musicals are a big thing for me,” she said. Though Miller-Heidke does have one dislike when it comes to live music. “As I get older I don’t like stuff that’s too loud, sometimes sound engineers actually hurt my ears. It feels like I’m getting punched in the ears,” she said. “I don’t like to be injured from watching a gig. That’s my main requirement,” she laughed. The ever quirky and delightful Kate Miller-Heidke will be performing at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, August 16 at 8pm. Tickets are $59. The track ‘Daydreamer’ is rock at its best; its heavy and driving with an impressive guitar solo and distinct vocals from singer Daniel Ison. Rounding out the line up is guitarist Wolfgang Maturana, bassist Andrew Barrington and drummer Wade Glennie. After playing shows in Melbourne and Bendigo the band will be coming to the Collector Hotel on Saturday, July 12 before heading to Queensland for a run of dates in August. “We are super excited for our up

MUSICAL THEATRE
The magic is back: Dirty Dancing to return to Sydney
L
broke more records in London where it opened in October 2006 at the Aldwych Theatre. The production began previews with £11 million in advance sales, a West End Theatre record. In an unprecedented move,
the theatre had to add an additional 25 seats to the auditorium to accommodate the demand for tickets. It ran for six months of completely sold out performances, becoming the longest running show in the history
of the Aldwych Theatre. ‘Dirty Dancing’ launched a hugely successful nationwide tour across the UK and Ireland in 2011, then returned to London at the Piccadilly Theatre. A new UK tour launched in Bristol in March this year. Featuring hit songs including ‘Hungry Eyes’, ‘Hey! Baby’, ‘Do You Love Me?’ and the iconic ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’, ‘Dirty Dancing’ has become one of the most popular musical productions of all time. It’s the summer of 1963, and 17-year-old Frances “Baby” Houseman is about to learn some major lessons in life as well as a thing or two about dancing. On holiday in New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents, Baby shows little interest in the resort activities, and instead discovers her own entertainment when she stumbles upon the staff quarters when an all-night dance party is in full swing. Mesmerised by the raunchy dance moves and the pounding rhythms, Baby can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle the resort dance instructor. Auditions for ‘Dirty Dancing’ will begin shortly and full details of the Sydney season will be confirmed soon.

eading Australian theatre producer John Frost has announced the international hit musical ‘Dirty Dancing’ will return to Australia late in 2014, a decade after its World Premiere in Sydney. “‘Dirty Dancing’ has been an amazing worldwide success,” said Frost. “The 1987 film was a massive hit, and the original movie soundtrack contains some of the most loved songs of all time. The stage musical gave audiences the chance to hear these songs performed live and to experience the breathtaking dance routines. People flocked to it, breaking records all around the world.” ‘Dirty Dancing’ was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Sydney in November 2004. Following the Sydney World Premiere season, the production toured to Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Auckland, a sell-out season of 18 months throughout Australia and New Zealand. A new production opened at the Theater Neue Flora in Hamburg, Germany in March 2006 where it broke records for achieving the largest advance in European theatre history. Following this success, ‘Dirty Dancing’

Exelby finds a new home After she was famously dumped from the former breakfast show ‘Wake Up’ on Ten, one of the nicest people in news, Natasha Exelby, has landed herself a new job… at Seven. While details are still scarce at the moment, Exelby is understood to be working with Seven News in Sydney. She last week tweeted she was excited to begin a new chapter in her life.
It’s the show that’s had more lifelines than an episode of ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’, but once again cult comedy ‘Community’ has been picked up for another season, this time by Yahoo. A few months ago NBC finally axed the show after five seasons on the air with fans upset, but that was until Yahoo rescued it as an online series for a 13 episode run.
Congratulations to Melbourne couple Adam and Lisa who won the second series of ‘House Rules’ on Sunday night. Nearly two million viewers tuned in to see the young couple defeat lovable Perth pair Carole and Russell. The show will be back next year.
Now that ‘House Rules’ is done for the year, Channel Seven has wasted no time in airing its next big franchise, ‘The X-Factor’. The hit singing show, which sees the return of all of last year’s judges, will premiere this Sunday night at 6.30pm. Will it be bigger than ‘The Voice’?
I told you last week Channel Ten had picked up Ian Thorpe for their Commonwealth Games coverage later this month, well in the lead up to his TV comeback, Thorpe will be interviewed by British legend Sir Michael Parkinson. The ‘tell-all’ chat which will air on Ten on Sunday, July 13.
A cool new series premiered on A&E earlier this week called ‘The Safecrackers’. The show follows Phil Crawford, one of America’s leading safecrackers, and his best buddy Blaze, as they travel the country to unravel mysteries and unlock the secrets lurking in abandoned safes.

Music DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Starring: Gary Oldman and Keri Russell
ANDY BULL SEA OF APPROVAL Out Now
‘The Planet of the Apes’ franchise is well loved by audiences and now comes the chance to see the newest movie in the rebooted series called ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’. It’s the follow up to 2011’s ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’. The story is set 10 years after most of the world has been wiped out from a deadly virus. Along with the human survivors there’s an expanding group of genetically evolved apes headed by their leader Caesar, played by Andy Serkis, most well known for his role as Gollum in the widely successful ‘The Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy. When the remaining humans and the apes come in contact with each other a battle breaks out for control. Among the survivors is Dreyfus, played by Gary Oldman, who is out for revenge, blaming the apes for the virus that led to the death of his wife and sons. Meanwhile Malcolm, played by Jason Clarke, and Ellie, played by Keri Russell, are two of a small group who are on the side of the apes. So far the film appears to be a success, with a mostly positive reception from reviewers.
It’s been a bit of a wait for fans, but after two EPs and a full length album in 2009, ‘We’re Too Young’, Andy Bull is releasing his sophomore album ‘Sea of Approval’. By the sounds of the first tracks from ‘Sea of Approval’ Bull has well and truly weathered the stormy seas of the notoriously tricky second album. This is alt-pop at its finest; catchy, upbeat and kept interesting by Bull’s signature playful vocals. His music gets stuck deep in your brain, but you won’t mind when the tracks are this good. ‘Sea of Approval’ has spawned three singles so far. The first track ‘Keep on Running’, which was released back in 2013, showcases Bull’s lyrical talents, while the second single ‘Baby I Am Nobody Now’ is an example of synth used well. It’s an infectious electropop track that you’ll want to play over and over again. Both tracks clearly had an impact on audiences, featuring in the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2013. The third single ‘Talk Too Much’ is upbeat, smooth and seriously catchy. The video for the track features fellow singer/ songwriter Megan Washington. This is the kind of album that you’ll want to have on repeat.

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB RATED MA15+
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ is based on a true story and follows the life of Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, played by Matthew McConaughey, who is diagnosed as HIV-positive and told that he doesn’t have long to live, 30 days to be exact. After being involved in a drug trial, which ends up making his condition worse, he finds an unapproved treatment that improves his condition and sets about smuggling it into the country. Woodroof then goes about creating the ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ to distribute the medication to fellow patients. Of course he is challenged by the medical community, including the Food and Drug Administration. The film also stars Jared Leto as a fellow HIV-positive patient, and Jennifer Garner as physician Dr Eve Saks. ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ has gained rave reviews and has won numerous awards including three Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Makeup.

hey frustrated many of Dutchman Abel Tasman’s attempts to land on what was ultimately to be named after him – Tasmania – but it’s those same tempest-like winds that today are so integral to the success of the state’s great cool-climate
vineyards. Now Heemskerk, named after Tasman’s 1640’s flagship, have released a range of wines under a wellchosen Abel’s Tempest label, including amongst them a marvellous 2012 Chardonnay created from fruit from two cool-climate Tasmanian regions; the Coal River Valley down in its south-east and the Tamar Valley away up in its north. Bringing to the fore the finest of characteristics of the fruits of these valleys, winemakers Charles ‘Chilly’ Hargrave and Peter Munro have put together a wine that’s awash with generous lemony citrus and nectarine flavours and subtle oak. And they’ve generously paid tribute to the skills of Heemskerk viticulturist Jamie Hewet for the extraordinary quality of fruit he supplied them for this wine. At a well-pitched $25 this is a delight to enjoy with obvious roast chicken or other white-meat dishes, or go a step further and pay homage to its Tasmanian heritage with a variety of seafoods from salmon to lobster and abalone. One to note: Rosemount’s Diamond Label series has been around for a long while now, and its ever-faithful Diamond Label Cabernet Sauvignon is a firm favourite amongst those who like a good steak and a well-priced red. This wine is selling for a nicely placed $16.

The Little Wings Flight Program provides free air transport to seriously ill children and their carers who, for geographical or medical reasons are not suited to commercial air, road or rail transport. For example a child may live a long distance from an airport with a commercial air service, or a child’s medical condition or depleted immune system may make it dangerous to travel on public transport, or undertake long distance car travel. Children are accepted into the Little Wings Flight Program after recommendation from their medical specialist.

iving in a regional area it’s not often that you get the chance to see some of Australia’s best musical acts right on your doorstep. Unless of course Triple J comes to town for a ‘One Night Stand’. The free, all ages event that brings live music to remote parts of Australia has so far been to Dubbo, Tumby Bay, Alice Springs, Sale and Dalby and this year the event set up shop in Mildura on the Murray River. 17,000 locals and visitors rocked up to see live music from some of Australia’s finest. This year’s lineup included rockers Violent Soho, indie-electro group RÜFÜS, indie-rockers from Brissie, The Jungle Giants, along with musical powerhouse Dan Sultan. There were also a few surprises from hip-hop artist Illy, who was joined onstage by Drapht to help him perform the track ‘YoYo’ as well as Vance Joy who, along with Illy, brought his hit song ‘Riptide’ to the eager crowd. Those who didn’t get a chance to head along to Triple J’s ‘One Night Stand Mildura’ will still be able to check out these amazing Aussie artists with the release of the ‘One Night Stand Mildura’ CD and DVD pack. The CD includes several tracks from each of the artists on the lineup. mirror and choose a negative word to describe their appearance. One in five of us have never been happy with our reflection and fuel these negative feelings by checking the mirror multiple times during the day. Two in five women feel ‘fat’ when they look in the mirror and what’s more startling is that many young girls are copying this behaviour because they see it in their mothers, mentors and friends.
So essentially, by feeling terrible about our own reflections, we are making others feel bad about theirs too and it is totally unnecessary. To fuel their commitment to changing this statistic by making women feel more confident, Dove has released a rather moving (and damned cute) video ‘Mirrors’, which can be viewed at www.youtube. com/dove. I’ll be smiling at my reflection this week – you should too!

You can also go in the draw to win $500 to put towards your bridal jewellery purchase at York Jewellers after the event. We enjoy getting out into the local community and participating at bridal expos. It’s a great feeling helping brides and grooms design their wedding bands and bridal jewellery. Wedding bands are something that you look at every day of your life and I feel that they really need to be personalised and designed uniquely for the individual. We can take any ideas and inspiration that you have and turn it into reality. If you are stuck for inspiration or aren’t sure what you want we will guide you and give you some ideas. Ladies, you may also want to have a look at what York Jewellers offers in the way of bridal jewellery for your big day. times I might need to use my car in a day). After I’ve been at work for about an hour, I am already sick of pushing my hair behind my ears so I put it up in some sort of bun or ponytail, before checking how it looks in the mirror (it normally looks terrible but I don’t change it). I stare at myself in the mirror about five times throughout the day and occasionally use the reverse camera on my smartphone to check if I have any lunch stuck in my teeth. Once I arrive home after work I head straight to my bedroom to change into something more comfortable and stare at myself in the mirror in order to readjust my hair. I visit the mirror another five times in the evening, before and after a shower and even more if I am going out for the night. The next day I repeat this routine and despite knowing that I have no reason not to, I never really feel content with how I look. Why am I telling you this boring story about my mirror usage, you might be/are probably thinking... It is because today I read a startling set of statistics. My relationship with the mirror is one that I probably wouldn’t describe as positive – it’s full of frustration, stress, confusion and annoyance but it isn’t all bad, every now and then it makes me smile. Usually, I wake up in the morning and head straight for the bathroom, where I stare at my reflection for a while – I check if yesterday’s pimple has gone down, inspect whether that new beauty fad has actually made my skin brighter and grimace at my hair. I head to the kitchen to have breakfast, I eat and then head straight back to the bathroom for my usual beauty routine. I stand in front of the mirror for an average of about 15 minutes at this point to get my face and hair primed for the day. I leave the mirror to change into something to wear to work and return to it to check my outfit looks okay – this takes much longer than it should – and I head out the door. Sometimes at this point I need to take a second look at my appearance, as I leave my shoes by the door. I catch a glimpse of myself in my car window as I get in the car, and then again in my rear-vision mirror (this is repeated on my way to lunch, way back from lunch and way home from work – as well as any other

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Attached Aquarians, plan a romantic holiday with your partner for some time over the next 13 months. Singles: love is likely with someone from another country or culture. On Friday and Saturday you’re more accident prone than usual so pace yourself. Sunday suits taking things at a quieter pace.
PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
It’s a wonderful week to get the balance right between thinking and feeling, as you communicate your Piscean ideas in creative ways. Be inspired by birthday great Nelson Mandela: “A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.” But, if your inner voice tells you something isn’t the real deal, then make sure you listen.

Over the next 13 months, many red-hot Rams will take up a new sport or hobby; start a hot romance; initiate a major creative project; go on a heavenly holiday; or welcome a new addition to the family. But Saturday’s Sun/Mars square could be a recipe for trouble, especially if you let your impulsive side take over. So calm down – and cool down – before you blow a fuse.
With Jupiter moving into your sign until August 2015 it’s time to be the creative and charismatic Cat you were born to be. Confidence is the rocket fuel that will take you places. Power struggles are likely on Saturday, unless you can let a loved one be the boss. The more you try to impose your ideas, the more woeful the weekend will be.
Star predictions for the week beginning July 13
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Vigilant Virgos can be worry-warts and workaholics but the coming year is the time to slot some regular relaxation into your busy schedule so you have space to recuperate and regenerate. Saturday’s Mercury/Neptune trine boosts your intuition and imagination, and puts you in the mood to connect with the creative muse within.
LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Laid-back Libra – sitting back and letting others make decisions leaves you feeling paralysed and powerless. With Mars marching through your sign, strive to be more self-sufficient, dynamic and decisive. Friendships are favoured over the coming year. And your peer group is set to expand as you become involved with a group, club or organisation involving like-minded souls.
SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Jupiter expands your domestic horizons. So over the next 13 months you could purchase real estate, move house, get a new housemate, or renovate. Venus joins Mercury and the Sun in your communication zone on Saturday, so it’s a wonderful weekend to socialise with family and friends.
Okay Scorpio, we all know that Saturn is sauntering through your sign, and sending challenges and obstacles in your direction. Don’t use that as an excuse to sit around sulking though! Listen to Nelson Mandela (born on July 18, 1918): “It is what we make of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.”
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Jupiter jumps into your communication zone so your social media profile gets a boost over the coming year. It’s also a terrific time to make the most of your marvellous mind via studying, writing, teaching, travelling or learning another language. Your standing in the local community is also set to soar.
Jupiter (your ruling planet) shifts into your travel zone midweek, so foreign shores beckon over the coming year. It’s also a positive period for ventures involving law, education, publishing, international business, imports and exports. On Thursday you’re bursting to help, but don’t go promising more than you can deliver.
CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Have you been worrying about money matters? Jupiter journeys through your money zone for the next 13 months, so make the most of the lucky financial opportunities that come your way. Venus vamps into your sign until August 12 so it’s time to improve your physical appearance via beauty treatments and some hot new clothes.
KILLER FOR HIRE
Wealth planet Jupiter moves into your ‘money-from-others’ zone so over the next 13 months some lucky Capricorns will benefit from an inheritance, loan, financial partnership, divorce settlement, superannuation pay-out or bumper tax return. And with Venus shifting into your partnership zone, close relationships will improve.
MONEY
Eliminate all your unwanted habits and addictive behaviours. STOP: Smoking, gambling, over-eating, excess alcohol. Free yourself from: depression, anxiety, phobias, insomnia, bed wetting, chronic pain & more.

your bank have real experience as a small business operator?
Is your business underbanked? We often hear a lot about consumers being ‘underbanked’ by their financial providers. It’s all too common to see banks that fail to recognise that their customers are real people with real needs – and these requirements can vary significantly from person to person. Just as there are bad banks, there are plenty of good ones that will go out on a limb to ensure their business customers are happy and satisfied. If you feel your business is being underbanked, here are some key signs to look for in a good bank. 1. Understands your business’ unique needs Every business is unique. Companies grow at different rates, cater to different types of customers, and ultimately have specific business banking needs. Working with a bank like BOQ that will get to know your individual business inside and out is the first step. Your branch manager will become your business banking partner and work with you to provide a tailor made banking solution. 2. Knows what it’s like to run a small business How can your local bank branch treat your company right if it doesn’t know the first thing about running a small business in Australia? One of the benefits of working with BOQ is many of our branches are not only run by their managers, they’re also owned by them. You can deal directly with the ownermanager in charge of the individual branch; this means you get to work closely with fellow small business owners who know the ins and outs of the SME scene. 3. Easy to contact and access As in any healthy relationship, it’s important that your bank is by your business’ side all the time. It’s likely your business will come across a range of changes and developments as it grows, some less expected than others. Is your bank on call to help you sort things out as soon as they arise? Maintaining good contact with your bank involves everything from having a number to call whenever and from wherever, being able to talk to someone face-to-face when required and even having good access to ATMs.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Top three tips for good health? 1. Drink at least three litres of water daily. 2. Try to get no less than eight hours of sleep to allow your body to recover. 3. Once a week I do a pilates class to clear the mind and revive the body. A daily ‘must do’? Having a balance in my daily work life and home life, staying positive and be grateful. Biggest health/fitness misconception? Fad diets, for example commercial diet shakes, and no exercise will reduce your weight. Wrong. Clean, healthy eating and being active go hand in hand!
Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? Life is to be enjoyed; there is no age limit to start a healthy lifestyle. My partner and I train together, we are classed as mature trainers but our fitness levels are high in cardio and strength. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy
the most? I enjoy working on my core muscles; running; and using all my muscles (for example flipping a tractor tyre, bench press, heavy weights and challenging myself). Exercise is not just for the gym, we also cycle and bushwalk. How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? When I started to get serious about my health I made a promise to myself that by
the time I’m 50 I will feel great and look great. I have a very positive attitude and I enjoy how staying fit makes me feel and that helps me to stay on track.
life & style
How does fitness feature in your life? I am fully employed with the local government but my passion is keeping fit and eating clean and healthy – this is why I have been inspired to study and become a personal trainer. I have never felt better and my aim is to help and encourage others to do the same.
Freestyle – anything else you want to say? One important thing I have learned is to know where the food you buy is coming from; even reading the food labels will tell you if that food will benefit your body. There is a famous saying: ‘pay the farmer not the doctor’!

I’m loving this cool, sunny weather at the moment. It’s easy to get out and get some activity in. And there are lots of reasons to! A recent ‘Science Daily’ report showed that regular exercise can reduce the risk and symptoms of more than 20 physical and mental health conditions just for starters, and can also slow down how quickly your body ages. A review of research, which summarised the findings of 40 papers published between 2006 and 2010, found that exercise improves conditions including cancer, heart disease, dementia, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity and high blood pressure. Exercise is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful ways to improve your health. After reviewing the 40 papers, researchers found that exercise reduces the risk of at least two dozen health conditions, ranging from cancer and heart disease to type 2 diabetes, stroke, dementia and depression. Exercise also slows down the rate of aging itself, providing perhaps the closest example of a real life fountain of youth as we will ever find. Hopefully if you get out and get the exercise in now, you won’t get any of those conditions in the first place. Don’t be the clown who says ‘why bother, you have to die from something’... normally as they are shoving a hot dog or cigarette in their mouth. Yes they will definitely die, and sooner rather than later. But in the meantime, for those of us that want a good quality of life and enjoy being active and healthy, know that exercise is a huge source of major health benefits. Many are proven but there are a whole lot more we don’t even know about. The best thing I can recommend is for you to do the research yourself, and then go out and do a half hour of some kind of activity you enjoy that’s at a fairly intense level for you. After you have finished sit down while your breath comes back. Then answer one question. Knowing all the good things that are taking place inside your body right then. How do you feel?

Death can sadly sometimes result from the toxic plant Brunfelsia
VET
VIEW FROM ABOVE
Brunfelsia: beautiful but deadly
Hope is not just a wish, it’s a reality
As vets, we commonly see toxicities in dogs and cats. Brunfelsia – commonly known as Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, is perhaps the most dangerous plant for dogs. All parts of the plant are considered toxic, especially the fruit, which drops after flowering. This beautiful plant is very common in suburban areas and has violet, lilac and white flowers. It is proposed that there are three different types of toxins in the Brunfelsia plant that cause the symptoms of intoxication. The toxins can cause seizures, paralysis/weakness and a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate. This plant can affect multiple organs of the body and treatment of the affected animal can be challenging. One of the problems with this plant is that toxicity can take over 12 hours to be revealed and pet owners may not realise that the plant is the problem. This can sometimes make it tricky if the owner has no idea that this dangerous plant is in their backyard. The signs that we see associated with Brunfelsia toxicity generally include depression, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle tremors and seizures. Some animals will drool a lot and some will also vocalise, making it seem like they are in pain. Brunfelsia toxicity can be difficult to diagnose as the signs can be similar to other toxins such as snail bait or even illicit drugs. Sometimes it becomes clear that Brunfelsia is the culprit if the animal starts to vomit or defecate the seeds or pods of the plant. Unfortunately there is no antidote for Brunfelsia and treatment involves supportive care. One of the most important steps with any toxicity is decontamination. This generally involves a gastric lavage (pumping out the stomach) and regular enemas so that the toxin is flushed out from the body as quickly as possible and to help prevent further progression of intoxication. Affected animals are also placed on a drip to keep them hydrated. Severely affected dogs that present with tremors or seizuring often need to be placed in an ‘induced coma’ until the toxin is eliminated from their body. Some animals even need to be on a ventilator due to paralysis of their respiratory muscles. The best way to avoid this from happening is to know your backyard.
Many people often use the word hope as a wish, “I hope winter won’t be too cold. I hope we’ll have a good holiday. I hope I won’t lose my job. I hope the Panthers can keep winning!” Sadly, none of these are hopes are certainties! Although, how good is it to see the Panthers doing so well in 2014! When the Bible uses the word hope, it is a term of confident certainty. Christian hope is something that is real and secure. Consider for example how the Apostle Peter uses the word hope: “In his great mercy God has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you”. Because Jesus has risen from the dead Christians have a real, living and secure hope for the future. The person who has put their hope in Jesus knows that absolutely nothing will be able to separate them from God’s love. And by putting your hope in Jesus you can know that now you have new life; a fresh start with God! People often hope in all sorts of things, sadly many of these things are simply wishes, dreams, crossing your fingers and toes and wishing for the best. But Jesus’ resurrection changes everything! People who put their trust in the resurrected Jesus, are given the certain hope of life forever with God. But even more than that, when you put your hope in Jesus you can know that God has promised to share heaven with you. Sharing heaven with God! What a great promise this is!

In Dubai they’ve got a problem with abandoned cars – not clapped-out old heaps left abandoned in the streets, but sparkling luxury, big price-tag saloons, 4WDs and sports cars cluttering airport car parks. Last year alone over 3,000 luxury cars were driven to international airports in Dubai and other parts of the United Arab Emirates for the seemingly strangest of reasons: their expatriate owners were fleeing the country to avoid going to prison for being in debt. Under the UAE’s Sharia law, being in debt is a criminal offence, so expatriates whose companies have perhaps gone belly-up (they’ve maybe missed a major
regular payment without even realising it, had a cheque bounce deliberately or unwittingly, or they’ve defaulted on their car’s monthly instalment), have simply fled the country to avoid doing time in the slammer. Their luxury cars from a once-glitzy Middle East lifestyle, and are dumped at airports, are then impounded, held for a reasonable time to see if their owners will maybe come back, and then auctioned – with car yards currently overflowing with orphaned Mercedes, Aston Martins, Porsches, BMWs, Range Rovers, Corvettes, Audis and the odd Maserati, Lamborghini and, would you believe, Rolls Royce.

It was to be a beautiful family getaway home, but the domed residence of the Lee family is a sight not for its beauty...
DAVID ELLIS
R
The dilapidated former residence of the Lee family years later after the buyer defaulted. But Bob and Margaret did not move back in, offering it instead to Janet and her-now husband to live in, together with a separate Lee grandson. Cruelly in 1992 Hurricane Andrew bore down ferociously on Cape Romano, ripping away the house’s outer two domes from the rest of the structure, yet doing remarkably little other structural damage: as Bob Lee intended, the hurricanestrength winds simply swept around, up and over the rounded domes. The worst damage was actually done to the beach, much of which was washed away, leaving the space-age house that once stood inland amid sand and palms, surrounded by seawater around its two outer most domes. And when the Lees sold it once more, unfortunately for the new owner, just a few months later another hurricane, Wilma in October 2005 pounded Florida with devastating 190km/h winds.
This time the house was less lucky. Many of its pillars were fractured by the massive seas, the domes subsequently slumped perilously, and wind and rain trashed its interiors. And with much more of the beach gone and the house now forlornly stranded “off-shore” over 100m from where it had originally been built, the Environmental Protection Agency and local county authorities ordered its total removal. But instead of complying the new owner simply walked away, and today the post apocalyptic looking remains of the dome house of Cape Romano are purely a curiosity for visitors. “It would break Daddy’s heart to see it like it is,” daughter Janet (Maples) said recently. “But he always said before he died, that it was worth it for the time he had it. “It was just beautiful at one time.” Our thanks to Janet Maples, Marco Island’s Coastal Breeze News Editor Natalie
Strom and Mila Bridger at Milabridger.com photography for assistance with this article. For information on Cape Romano visit www.caperomanofl.com.

etired American independent oil producer Bob Lee was well ahead of his time when in the early 1980’s he built a family holiday home at remote Cape Romano on Florida’s Marco Island; an almost space age like half dozen interconnecting concrete domes squatting atop sturdy stilts overlooking the beach. Today curious locals and tourists alike still make their way to the Cape for a look at Mr Lee’s handiwork, but rather than coming upon a futuristic marvel, they’re confronted with the sad sight of his igloolike structures now collapsed, graffiticovered and surrounded by sea – the victims of Mother Nature at her ferocious worst. When the ever inventive Mr Lee, a fervent tinkerer, handyman and dreamer, first thought up the idea of a beachside dome house, he built and perfected a prototype where the family lived 1,100km away in Gatlinburg in Tennessee – that prototype still there to this day. Retiring at just 44 on the wealth from his oil ventures, Bob Lee had to barge everything to Cape Romano for his isolated getaway, including even the fresh water to mix the concrete it would be built from. And as it evolved, the most bizarre of rumours spread about it: that weirdo cultists living there had it protected 24 hours a day by machine gun-tottin’ guards, that it was “a ghostly place” that if ventured close to was at your own peril – even that it was the work of aliens from another planet. But in truth the only things bizarre about the dome house were Bob’s extraordinarily forward-thinking, self-sustaining inclusions, in a period of otherwise gross consumer excess. These included an 87,000 litre (23,000 gallon) water reservoir under one of the domes that was fed by rainwater and filtered and used in showers, dishwasher and toilets. There were also vast solar panels set apart from the house to generate enough electricity to power lights, airconditioning, hot water heaters, ceiling fans, refrigerator, even a hot tub and other playthings. And for more wintry weather Bob Lee devised an under-floor heating system – and for the family’s bemusement and convenience, a conveyor to carry logs from a central storeroom, and drop them hands-free straight into the open fireplace in the den. Yet despite spending two years completing his amazing structure, Bob and Margaret Lee and their daughter Janet lived there for just two years, selling out in 1984 – only to repossess the property three

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS
Time to visit your garden It might be winter and the mornings may be cold, but now is the perfect time to work on your garden be careful!). Winter is also a great time to tend to your rose garden. Because roses are traditionally grown in the ground and dug out during their dormant period, winter’s the season when roses are widely available. They’re commonly found on sale with their roots protected by moisture-holding material and wrapped in a plastic outer sleeve. The bare, thorn-studded stems that protrude from the bag don’t look very promising but, within a few months, these stems will be bursting with new growth and, eventually, beautiful flowers. Choosing roses to grow can be difficult but there are many varieties on sale that don’t just give you lovely blooms, they support good causes.

he early morning frosts can be less than persuasive, but now is the perfect time to head out into the garden and give it a head start for spring. Winter is the best time to prune many different plants, but this can sometimes be done over-enthusiastically. According to Yates Garden Guide, it is important to remember four pruning recommendations; never cut without good reason, prune at the right time for the plant, prune lightly rather than severely and always use sharp pruning tools (but

To date, the club has planted over 5,220 trees in and around the South Penrith area and are responsible for many of the trees now growing in Jamison Park. Merle’s talent on show at Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_
3-year-old Merle Matthews’ folk art talent is on display to be seen by thousands over the weekend at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair. The Penrith senior’s work is part of a daisy-themed display, ending on Sunday, July 13, compiled of works by the 50 finalists in the Folk and Decorative Artists Association of Australia’s (FDAA) Daisy A Day competition. The Daisy A Day exhibition is in support of Ovarian Cancer Australia, an organisation the FDAA was keen to support as its membership is predominately female. Ms Matthews jumped at the chance to be involved in a competition supporting cancer research, support and awareness. “My daughter has pancreatic cancer, and so I like to support any and every cancer organisation possible,” she said.

Merle Matthews with her artwork
“I just hope by entering my work I am able to contribute my part, as competitions such as this should be less about winning but more about giving.” Ms Matthews’ folk art work is painted on canvas and was inspired by a photograph of a veranda view she had been hoping to paint for some time. She eventually got around to completing the work and the result is stunning. “I have been holding onto this picture with the intention of painting it for what seems like forever, but there never seemed to be an appropriate opportunity until now,” she said. “When I heard the theme for the competition, I immediately knew it was the perfect excuse to recreate the picture that I love so dearly.” Locals can be proud of Ms Matthews and her brilliant work, which thousands of people now have the opportunity to see for themselves. The Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair is showing at the Sydney Exhibition Centre at Glebe Island between Wednesday, July 9 and Sunday, July 13. Admission is $18 for adults and $16 for seniors. CHARLIE KENNAWAY is a valued member of the local community and has made a difference in the lives of many across the area. Every Wednesday, the 71-year-old from St Clair leaves his home before the sun is up to volunteer for Mount Druitt Hospital. He is a volunteer bus driver who picks up patients, all with various ailments, from their homes and takes them to hospital for treatment. He waits until their treatment is finished before dropping them home. Charlie is also the Treasurer for Cambridge Park Lions Club. He spends countless hours helping the club to decided on worthy causes to assist financially and spends many days organising BBQs for local events through the Lions. He also lends a helping hand to Mamre House by driving all the refugees and students home. In addition to this, he has work commitments two days per week and somehow still has time for his family.
