The importance of planning ahead...

e plan for the years to come; in fact the Egyptians were doing it thousands of years ago. These days we look after our health and take the time to write a will without realising that we’re overlooking one very important aspect. Often, there are no preparations for arranging a funeral. Taking the time to clearly and calmly plan a service that reflects your personality is important, and with Guardian Funerals we believe that every goodbye is different. You can add any special request you may have so the service meets all your cultural, emotional, spiritual and personal needs. You’ll help your family by noting your choice of funeral service, what venue you would like, music or hymns, flowers, life symbols, or any other special requests. Funeral Director at Guardian Funerals Pinegrove, Fiona Boulous, says there are many benefits to planning ahead. “Prepaying a funeral is the final gift you can give to your family,” she said. “It helps greatly with the financial and the emotional stress that sometimes follows the death of a loved one, and it ensures there will be someone caring and experienced to look after family members when you’re gone.” Prepaying a funeral with Guardian Funerals, gives you the protection of purchasing the
funeral you want, fixing it in at today’s prices, and protecting your family against inflation. Prepaying with Guardian Funerals also helps cushion your family from confusion and difficult emotions because your wishes are known, recorded and paid for. It is a wonderful thing to want to protect your family and friends from having to make and pay for funeral arrangements when the need arises and quite often at such short notice. Guardian Funerals will assist you every step of the way to make sure that the funeral you are planning meets all of your requirements. All our team are active Justices of the Peace and you can ask them for their professional advice, or speak to friends about what you may like. Located within the picturesque grounds of Pinegrove Cemetery, our Pinegrove team shares over 70 years’ experience within the funeral industry … more than any other funeral business across Western Sydney. That’s why more families choose Guardian Funerals Pinegrove to care for their loved ones; 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week. To make a no obligation appointment to meet with Fiona or one of her experienced and caring team, either in our offices or in the comfort of your home, please call us on 9625 8500.

Miraculous Maclean comes back for unfinished business After nearly losing his life and sustaining a paralysing injury, John Maclean has learnt to walk and run again, and now is inspiring other wheelies to achieve their dreams

active and included in every day life.” Ky Hurst who has won four Australian Ironman titles and is a member of the Surf Life Saving Australia Hall of Fame will be joining John in his first ever triathlon. “I’ve always been a huge supporter of the John Maclean Foundation and I’ve always followed John’s career as an athlete. I can’t wait to join John on this amazing day and to be able to race side by side with him is a huge honour. This will be my first ever triathlon and I’m so excited,” he said. Two times World Champion, Jana Pittman recently met John and was so inspired she signed up for her first triathlon. “I was keen to do this event with John as a few weeks ago I met the man himself.
TROY DODDS @troydodds
The picture of John standing hasn’t been ‘photoshopped’, isn’t an illusion and isn’t captured in a fleeting moment of freedom. But it is an image that declares John Maclean has defied the odds. Maclean was cycling on the M4 Motorway on a June day back in 1988. The impact of the truck resulted in Mr Maclean suffering multiple breaks to his pelvis and back, a fractured sternum, punctured lungs, a broken arm and left John a paraplegic. Ironically, he was training for the Nepean Triathlon. It’s ironic because 26 years after the accident that nearly claimed his life, Maclean will this year participate in the event as an able-bodied athlete. On October 26, 2014 at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, Maclean will be joined by sporting legends like Steve Waugh, Ky Hurst, Phil Kearns and Jana Pittman along side 150 of his close friends and almost 2,000 other competitors as he leaves his wheelchair behind to complete the Nepean Triathlon. Maclean had never given up hope of walking again and now he is achieving things that are astounding the medical world and redefining what might be possible for people with spinal injuries. “It is exhilarating,” he said. “As a wheelchair athlete you’re always looking left. Now I can walk again I’m looking right.” Former Australian Cricket Captain Steve Waugh will be swapping his whites and donning a wetsuit and Lycra as he takes on his first triathlon challenge with John at the Nepean Triathlon. “I’ve known John Maclean for over a decade now and I still marvel at his amazing attitude and enthusiasm to confront each and every challenge with 100 per cent commitment. So when he invited me to join him in the Nepean Triathlon I immediately felt compelled to be a part of this adventure,” he said. “This will be my first triathlon and John and I have been training hard and laughing loud at our many misadventures but we are both excited about lining up on the start line on October 26. “The John Maclean Foundation does tremendous work to inspire and enable Young Aussie Wheelies which is vital as it changes the lives of these kids and their families and enables them to remain

Rarely am I so humbled and impressed by someone,” she said. “His drive for life and positivity was infectious and very endearing. I wanted to help John raise awareness and funds for his charity so he can continue changing lives and impacting others. This particular event obviously has a lot of meaning for John and I would like to support him in the process.” The John Maclean Foundation (JMF) places incredible importance on inclusion and is encouraging the local Penrith community to join John and the other sporting legends in the last 5km of the 10km walk/run, to support young Aussies in wheelchairs and cheer John across the finish line. Wheelies and their families to provide them with much needed equipment to enhance and improve their lives. Proceeds raised from the triathlon will go to the Foundation, which enables kids in wheelchairs to chase their dreams. In an interview with the Weekender earlier this year, Maclean spoke about the difficulties he confronted after his 1988 accident. “When the accident happened, you know that things are serious, but it really sank in when they started to elevate me into a wheelchair,” Mr Maclean recalled. “But my dad always said to me down at Little Athletics, ‘I don’t care if you come first or last so long as you try your best’ and so that has been a source of motivation for me.” Indeed, Mr Maclean has already achieved more than what most people could in their entire lives. In 1995 he made history by becoming the first wheelchair athlete to finish the course at the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon and was the first non-American to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. In 1998 he was the first wheelchair athlete to swim the English Channel. That same year he started his children’s charity, the John Maclean Foundation, which supports kids in wheelchairs. He represented Australia at the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and in 2001 he sailed in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. He even won rowing silver at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Now comes the next step in amazing, inspiring story that just may be the best yarn Penrith throws up in 2014. Bring on the Nepean Triathlon!

FEATURE STORY
Secret sonic selfies and dreams of Superstar albums From parenting to feminism and everything in between, Tori is not afraid to answer the tough questions life and society poses. And she’s answering them with gusto and an all new album...
t’s no wonder Tori Amos attracts a legion of passionate and devoted fans. The classically trained, singer-songwriter pours so much of herself into her music and has never been one to shy away from addressing potentially provocative and highly emotional subject matter, which makes her a refreshing woman to speak to, especially in a world that is saturated with fakery and consumerism.
I
KATE REID @kate_reid6
For example when asked about her views on the Women Against Feminism movement Tori is very candid in her response, suggesting that the real issue may lie with the word itself. “You know the word feminism sometimes gets associated with all kinds of definitions and I think that the women against it are stuck, they’re stuck in a time capsule of what the definition means,” said Tori in her trademark soft yet deliberate voice. “So that’s why we have to clarify, we have to clarify our definition and to be a feminist means equality for men and women, equally, that’s what it is. It’s not women against men.” After coming to prominence in the 90’s, Tori Amos is most well known for her 1994 hit ‘Cornflake Girl’ off the album ‘Under The Pink’. Two decades on, with 13 albums under her belt and more than 12 million album sales, Tori is back with a new release ‘Unrepentant Geraldines’ – a title which perfectly explains her current attitude towards life. “I started thinking about it and I reckoned that at 50 you need to be unrepentant,” she said. “That’s the time you need to stand where you stand, be who you are and enough apologising for who you are and what you believe in. “Think about it, sometimes we apologise because somebody else is put out but what have you done other than make your own luck and stand by what you believe in?” Though Tori has released several albums in the last five years – including 2012’s ‘Gold Dust’, an orchestral reworking of her previously released tracks and 2011’s ‘Night of Hunters’, an album inspired by classical song cycles, where each song adds to an ongoing story – ‘Unrepentant Geraldines’ is her first pop record since 2009. The album features a collection of songs that have been gathered together over the last few years. “These songs were just songs that helped me, walked me through my life, helped me get through the day. So they were my little secret selfies. I call them secret sonic selfies,” she said.
That’s the time when you need to stand where you stand
Joining Tori on the album is her 14-yearold daughter Nataysha – or Tash – who features on the track ‘Promise’. “‘Promise’ came from a place of us talking about why teenage girls in particular get in to it with one of their parents,” Tori said. “And my gosh that discussion lasted for months and is ongoing. But she began to say to me ‘what’s really difficult is when grown ups know ‘it’, that they know everything, they know the answer and it’s so annoying’,” she laughed. When it comes to parent-child relationship it’s not surprising that Tori – along with British born husband Mark Hawley – encourages the same openness that she herself displays. “We created an environment where it was always ‘look, we don’t care what you say as long as you’re being truthful, and you can express an idea that one of us might not agree with but there has to be a place where ideas get expressed and we can all express our point of view and it can be a different point of view’,” Tori said. “The only rule in the house is you better
get your grammar right, if you’re cursing you better get it right.” Besides heading to our shores this November, Tori is also currently working on the cast album for 2013’s ‘The Light Princess’, a musical that she worked on with Australian writing partner Samuel Adamson. And in true Tori spirit she is determined to put all of her effort into creating something wonderful. “Records are, well first of all they’re forever and I treasure the process I think it’s really important to do your very best and so a lot of cast records I couldn’t listen to,” she said. “I love ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’... the movie version, when I was a kid, and I always thought, if I ever have an opportunity to make a record of a cast it’s going to be on this level,” she laughed. Tori Amos will be performing at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday, November 11 and Wednesday, November 12. Tickets are $93.05 – $143.05+bf. Modern ‘Henry V’ inspired by boys in 1941 Blitz or his first time directing with Australian theatre company Bell Shakespeare, Damien Ryan will be bringing his contemporary take on the Shakespeare classic ‘Henry V’ to the Joan this October. The tale follows King Henry V who is set to invade France after a series of betrayals. On the night before the battle the King hears about the struggles of his soldiers and comes up with a plan to use a new weapon; the power of words. Damien Ryan’s contemporary take on this classic story was inspired by the true story of a group of boys who would put on plays while stuck in a bunker during the Blitz in 1941. For 71 consecutive nights they performed works including some of Shakespeare’s classics. Starring in the production, which will have its first Sydney season at the Joan, is Michael Sheasby, Damien Strouthos, Matthew Backer and Eloise Winestock. So gather your ‘band of brothers’ for Ryan’s take on this classic tale. Henry V will be on at The Joan from Thursday, October 16 to Saturday, October 18. Tickets are $30-$49. Hot new doco will have you hooked This week I had the privilege of previewing one of the better observational documentary series to hit our screens in recent times, Channel Ten’s ‘Firies’. The fly on the wall style show, which premieres at 6.30pm this Saturday, shares a rare insight into the extraordinary lives of the nation’s first line of defence, firefighters. The eight episode series follows the courageous and selfless work of two platoons from Fire and Rescue NSW – B platoon in Sydney’s inner suburb of Glebe, and D platoon in Liverpool, in south-west Sydney. I was given the first two episodes, which will air this and next weekend, to watch and found them to be both educational and entertaining. Throughout the series, viewers follow the firies as emergencies unfold and find out how they manage these extraordinary crises. We ride with the firies in their trucks, stand beside them as they battle raging blazes, and we are with them at the fire station going about their general duties. The excellent production values of ‘Firies’ really depicts just how real the situations are, especially when you get to see an emergency play out from start to finish – meaning you get to hear the actual Triple Zero call of the reported incident before seeing the firies head into action. The other aspect of the show I enjoyed was that you get to witness the varying sides of firefighters. Not only do these men and women risk their lives putting out dangerous fires but they also attend other emergencies like car accidents, floods and medical dilemmas. But it isn’t just the entertainment factor that will have you hooked from the intro, ‘Firies’ is also a great show for educational purposes. With the show partnered up with battery maker Duracell, throughout the series we see the Firies helping to prevent future fires by teaching people how to test their smoke alarms and change their batteries at least once a year. All in all, ‘Firies’ is emotional, gripping and best of all, real. ‘Firies’ premieres this Saturday at 6.30pm on Channel Ten.

The ‘you’ and ‘me’ referred to in this musical collaboration is City and Colour’s Dallas Green and Alecia Moore aka Pink. The pair had been friends for years before deciding to jam together. What started as an invitation from Alecia to work on a song or two together led to a 10 track folk album titled ‘rose ave.’. Several tracks have been released from the album so far and they have all been rather well received. ‘Capsized’ sees the powerful Pink and soulful Dallas blend their vocal talents to create a stomping track, while the title track ‘You and Me’ is a beautiful country folk ballad where the two artists intertwine perfectly to bring to life emotion-filled lyrics like ‘you can be flawed enough but perfect for a person’. While not the most expected of duos it’s hard to fault the tracks that have been released so far. The album is sure to bring together mainstream and alternative music fans, introducing them to the magic that can be created when two artists from different sections of the industry get together. This is one of those collaborations you never knew you wanted but now that it exists you wonder how you ever lived without it.

‘The Judge’ is a drama which follows the story of successful lawyer Hank Palmer, played by Robert Downey Jr, who is estranged from his family until he gets a call informing him that his mother has died. After travelling back to his family home that he hasn’t visited in years for his mother’s funeral, Hank discovers that his father and the town’s judge Joe Palmer, is a suspect in a murder case. The two are forced to work through their issues as Hank fights to defend his father and proclaim his innocence. In the process he not only reconnects with his father but also discovers the truth behind recent events. ‘The Judge’ explores the theme of family and the struggles we face when dealing with those close to us. The film is packed full of famous faces including ‘Law and Order’s Vincent D’Onofrio as Hank’s brother Glen, and Oscar winning actor Billy Bob Thornton as Dwight Dickman, along with ‘Parenthood’s Dax Shepard and ‘Up in the Air’ star Vera Farmiga. ‘The Judge’ was directed by David Dobkin who worked on ‘Shanghai Knights’.

AROUND THE WORLD
Going the whole HOG Guided motorcycle trip proves to be a hit with travel writers DAVID ELLIS
ravel writing colleagues have told us of some pretty bizarre things they’ve got up to in that search for the ‘Holy Grail’ of travel stories. But when fellow scribe Roderick Eime mentioned recently he’d teamed up with some other writing mates to rent themselves a small fleet of HarleyDavidson motorbikes and take to the open road, we thought he and his colleagues had finally lost it. But all returned unscathed after three days and around 700km on their Harleys from Sydney to Goulburn, Bathurst, Katoomba, Windsor and back to Sydney. And while they could say they went the whole HOG (the name of the Harley Owners Group that has 8,000 members in Australia alone) colleagues quickly dubbed this group of media oldies ‘The Mild Hogs’. Interestingly the name HOG that’s

become synonymous with the throaty Harley-Davidson actually goes back a long time before the Harley Owners Group was even thought of. A team of Harley motorbike racers in Kansas in the 1920s were dubbed ‘The Wrecking Crew’ (because of their demolition of opponents) and would do victory laps after each win with their team mascot, a pet pig (in America a hog) happily standing in safety harness on their lead bike’s petrol tank. Thus Harley-Davidsons were quickly nicknamed ‘Hogs.’ But back to Rod and his mates. Having ridden motorbikes since he was 10-years of age, but never a Harley, he says that when he went into the Burwood (Sydney) store of EagleRider Motorcycles he must have looked like an awestruck kid in a very expensive toy shop. But he says EagleRider’s owners, Will and Santina Keith who are both factory trained by Harley-Davidson in America, quickly assured him that while the big steel and chrome Harley was a heavy machine, it was superbly balanced and easy to ride. Roderick rented a 1200cc Sportser and nervously headed to the Hawkesbury River for a test run. “I was exhilarated and in surprisingly good shape for an older bloke with a dodgy back,” he now says. And then two weeks later with Will Keith and media mates he was off on that three-day triangular sweep of NSW. And he found just how popular motorcycle touring is becoming in this country. EagleRider was launched in Australia 12 months ago. It has a range of fully-guided rides out of its bases in Sydney, Brisbane and Mackay. See www.eaglerider.com.au.

espite its enormous popularity in other parts of the world, Gruner Veltliner has only been made in this country since 2009. It was pioneered by Lark Hill in the Canberra District that year, and 12 months later Hahndorf Hill Winery released South Australia’s first ever too. Since then around a dozen others have followed with plantings and releases of this wine, whose largest producing country is Austria followed by Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and to a far-lesser degree a number of regions in the USA. Hahndorf Hill is the major player in Australia, and winemaker Larry Jacobs is a master in coaxing the best from the grape into the bottle – so much so that Austria’s leading wine magazine recently hailed his 2012 as “the best Gruner Veltliner outside Austria.” Larry’s latest release from the 2014 vintage is another ripper drop that could probably best be described as akin to the finest Sauvignon Blancs. It has a wonderfully full forward-palate that erupts with citrus, stone fruit and spice. Pay $28 and see why the variety’s regarded so highly in other parts of the world for its food-friendliness: it’s a marvellous match with anything from white meats (think pan-fried pork chops with plum sauce) to spicy Asian, seafoods and vegetarian. One to note: A 2013 Pinot Noir out of Domaine Chandon’s vineyards in Victoria’s Yarra Valley shows just how well this variety does in cool climates. The wine has terrific varietal aromas and a generous and complex palate; dark plums and raspberries come to the fore and are complemented by gentle tannins. Pay $30.95.

VOLUNTEER TODAY PRIMARY ETHICS TEACHERS NEEDED
To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered
to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.
“
This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.
”
Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and
trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved.
entertainment
While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices.
Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

There’s plenty going on at York Jewellers The collaboration with our friends at Pink Kimberley and the McGrath Foundation is now in full swing at York Jewellers. If you missed my column last week you still have plenty of time this month to get in-store and show your support for the McGrath Foundation. By doing so you can go into the draw to win a stunning pink diamond pendant valued at $13,500. Check out our website for details at www.yorkjewellers.com.au. Now to share some news that is close to home – I’m very proud of my younger brother Douglas who has just returned from Perth where he competed against other jewellers at the 2014 World Skills event. World Skills is a huge deal as it is the nation’s largest and most prestigious skill and trade showcase. Doug took out the silver medal and had a fantastic time whilst competing against other skilled craftsmen and this now opens up the possibility of him receiving an overseas scholarship. Also, there is exciting news in-store as at York Jewellers we will soon be introducing a new brand of Swiss made watches called Claude Bernard. These watches are beautifully made and are available in a range of classic styles right through to a more sporty look in both men’s and women’s designs. Stay tuned for more on these soon. Also, I wanted to take a quick moment to thank you for all of the support that we have been receiving lately. Not only at a store level but also via email and social media. Our Facebook page and Instagram account has been inundated with wonderful messages from happy clients. Feedback from our clients is very important to us (be it good or bad) as we always strive to offer the best customer service! If you would like to connect with us you just need to search for us on Facebook: York Jewellers and Instagram: @yorkjewellers. There was also a bit of excitement in-store recently as we had a man drop to one knee and propose to his now fiancé! As you can imagine she was very surprised and absolutely loved her York Jewellers engagement ring!

Online shopping can sometimes feel like you are handing your money over to no-one. With nobody to smile and say “have a nice day” and no new purchase to immediately take home, it can feel a little bit pointless. But what if I told you that there is a way to shop and support charity at the same time? An Australian husband and wife team have come up with a concept that they hope will send some of the $14 billion that Australians spend every year online to Australian charities. Expedia, The Iconic, Asos, Katies, Pillow Talk, Rebel Sport, Dan Murphy’s, Estee Lauder and Weight Watchers are some of the big names working with The Generous Shopper. The companies involved donate a percentage of every dollar spent to The Generous Shopper, which means that shoppers don’t have to fork out additional money to be involved. The Generous Shopper then distributes the funds to charity. But there is a catch: you can’t just log on to Asos, purchase $100 of clothing and expect for part of your spending to be donated to saving puppies, you need to register. Again, registering costs nothing and it is as simple as hopping on to www.thegenerousshopper.com, picking a charity, downloading a plugin or clicking the link to your preferred retailer and then start shopping. “This is a really easy way that everyone can do their shopping online and give money to a cause close to their hearts at the same time,” said The Generous Shopper co-founder Sarah Chatterjee. “Australians already lead the US in our average online spend per capita, and are second only to the UK, so the potential is huge. Who doesn’t want to feel they can do some good whenever they shop?” Seven Australian charities are already signed up and set to benefit. These include; Assist a Sista, Beyond Blue, CARE Australia, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Destiny Rescue, Good Return and Habitat for Humanity. In addition to not costing a cent extra for shoppers, The Generous Shopper is also free for charities to be involved in. Co-founder of Assist a Sista, an Australian charity that supports

victims of domestic violence, Nicolle, said that when they heard about the concept, they couldn’t wait to be involved. “It’s heartening to see so many retailers are already on-board. In an increasingly tough landscape for fundraising, we are thrilled that The Generous Shopper will provide help for our Assist 2 Learn program,” she said. “This program allows us to provide new uniforms, backpacks, shoes and extracurricular activities for every child that has to start a new school when they enter refuge.” “One online shopper could raise hundreds of dollars every year, and won’t even need to change their shopping habits,” she added. So if the shoppers are thrilled with the idea and so are the charities, then how do the businesses feel about being involved? “The Generous Shopper is an inspiring initiative that we’re proud to partner with,” said Patrick Schmidt, CEO at The Iconic. “At The Iconic, unparalleled customer experience is our number one priority... The ability to easily and seamlessly pay it forward at purchase is a wonderful enhancement.”

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Don’t sit on the side-lines and be a Libran wallflower. With vivacious Venus visiting your sign, you’re in the mood to socialise and circulate; converse and communicate; mix and mingle. Mercury is reversing through your sign, so your diplomatic skills will be sorely tested as loved ones get involved in misunderstandings.
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
It will be tempting to overindulge in fatty foods, sweet treats and fine wine this week as Venus and Jupiter switch your hedonistic Taurus streak into top gear. Meanwhile, retrograde Mercury throws all semblance of order out the window! So your motto for the moment is from Oscar Wilde: “I can resist everything except temptation.”
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
This week’s stars suit reading, writing, public speaking, social networking, travel, friendships and having fun. But, with Mercury still retrograde (until October 26) expect a few hiccups along the way! On Friday and Saturday, the stars magnify your ability to persuade others with a convincing argument. But realise that a perceived success may have to be tweaked further down the track.

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Expect pleasure and pain in relationships this week Rams, as the Sun and Venus boost your social life, and then retrograde Mercury causes some mischief and confuses communication. Problems will crop up if you jump to hasty conclusions so try to think things through before you react. Being positive and proactive wins friends.

Mars is rushing through your sign, so you’re in garrulous, gungho mode. Strive to get the balance right between being passionately proactive, and taking thoughtful action. Spontaneity works sometimes… at other times, smart Sagittarians learn to adopt a more measured approach. Retro Mercury scrambles telecommunications so back-up documents and double-check messages before you press send!
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Do you enjoy your job and does it stimulate your mind? This week, take the time to re-evaluate your professional position, as Venus and retrograde Mercury pair up in your career zone. And is your home/work balance way out of whack? Utilise the power of your clever Capricorn mind to work smarter, rather than harder.
LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Communication will be a delight and a conundrum this week, as the Sun and Venus increase your Cat charisma. But learn to selfedit what comes out of your mouth Lions, otherwise you are likely to upset someone important (like your mum, boss or partner). And be extra careful when sending emails, texts and tweets.
With plenty of planetary action in your aspiration zones Aquarius, it’s time to dream big dreams, create your preferred future, and follow your destiny. And don’t be dismayed by temporary setbacks and stressful delays. The universe is testing your determination to stick to your desired course.
VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
With Venus and retrograde Mercury in your finance zone, money matters are oscillating between wonderful and woeful. So stash extra cash away to tide you over when times are tight. When it comes to a recalcitrant relative, you will eventually convince them with your reasonable Virgo rationale.
AUTO REPAIRS
Jupiter helps you power through work projects with extra energy and enthusiasm. Then you’ll have more hours in each day for rest and recreation, as you enjoy good times with family and friends. The more you support and encourage colleagues, the better your work environment will be.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Mercury is reversing through your home zone until October 26 so domestic dynamics are frustrating at the moment. Time for clever Crabs to communicate clearly and consult often. Plus a problem with a vulnerable family member that you thought was resolved may have to be revisited. The weekend is wonderful for financial matters.

Still waters run deep! With so much planetary action in your mystery zone this week, there’s more to everything than meets the eye. And it will take your Scorpio discretion to uncover secrets and distinguish fact from fantasy. Plus old emotional issues may rise to the surface. Making ends meet: are you an endies? There is a new category of financial living picking up popularity across the globe. ENDIES – which stands for Employed but No Disposable Income or Savings – is a new term that has been coined to describe people who are working but, because of their average wage, can barely afford to live in the city they call home. Closer to home, many Australians are living in a similar situation. In fact, recent industry research shows close to 20 per cent of people are living pay to pay. With the Australian minimum wage sitting at just a shade above $33,000, it is easy to see how many households could be struggling to keep up with rising food, accommodation and utility expenses. When unexpected costs arise, such as medical bills and car repairs, those living pay to pay are suddenly forced to either go into debt or sell their possessions to make ends meet. Two in five Australians admit to using their credit card to cover surprise expenses, while a massive 70 per cent dip into their savings account. If you’ve found yourself living an ENDIES lifestyle, it’s time to stop living pay to pay. Here are three tips to help you break the cycle. 1. Pretend you got a pay cut Living beyond your means is a fast way to get into debt. For those living pay to pay, it’s unlikely that your finances will change at all. To make real progress, it is important to spend less than you earn. Convince yourself that you have received a pay cut – this should help you to cut down on your spending. 2. Create a savings-friendly budget Rather than budgeting out your expenses and spending the rest on entertainment, your budget needs to account for savings and unexpected costs. Allocate the necessary funds to food, rent and bills. Then add an extra section for savings or emergencies payments. Only then can the remainder be considered spare cash! 3. Have fun for free Rather than spending your paycheck on entertainment each week, consider inviting your friends and family out for a cost-free activity. Australia is home to many festivals and events that cost nothing.
FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION
Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
How does fitness feature in your life? As a well-known author, speaker, and researcher with expertise in strength and conditioning science, athlete preparation and nutritional supplementation I have been responsible for the physical preparation of elite athletes in Australia and Indonesia. In 2008 I attended the Beijing Olympic Games as part of the Indonesian Olympic Team in my role as Department Head of Strength and Conditioning. My works in strength and conditioning have been recognised both nationally and internationally. I have been recipient of the Strength of America Award, Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Professional Excellence, Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching, NSW Sports Safety Award, AAESS Medal (2006), NSCA Graduate Research Award and ISC Scholar Award. I currently hold two academic appointments specialising in sports science and strength and conditioning as the Senior Lecturer in Exercise Rehabilitation at Charles Sturt University, and as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Sports Science at Edith Cowan University. My passion for enhancing athletic performance developed in my youth as a representative junior rugby league player. My success at junior representative level resulted in invitations to trial with both the Eastern Suburbs Roosters and CronullaSutherland Sharks Presidents Cup U/23 teams. This was followed by my selection

A daily ‘must do’? Consume protein in every meal and get enough sleep. Biggest health/fitness misconception? If it sounds too good to be true, then it most likely is. Effort equals reward; invest in every movement of every day. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? By being fit and healthy you will increase your productivity in your chosen endeavour, whatever that may be; at work, playing with your children or maximising your athletic performance.
in the Australian Gridiron Team to tour USA and Europe. I also hold a 1st Dan Black Belt in Karate, representing NSW and Australia in both points-sparring and continuous full contact. As a competitive mixed martial artist I am currently ranked 9th in NSW for the National All Styles Continuous, Advanced Black Belt Open. Top three tips for good health? 1. Exercise daily 2. Eat nutritious foods 3. Enjoy the sunshine
What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Combining bodyweight strength exercise with MMA training. I enjoy using bodyweight exercises; variations of gymnastics. I train with some strong athletes who lift way more than me in the big three lifts (squat, clean and deadlift), but you can see the look in their eyes when I push out 15 chins with 40kg strapped to my waist. Don’t lock yourself on machines, you have all the weight you need on your body... Lift it!

Mother nature says no to smoking

Men are now finding out that they are infertile because their mothers smoked

It’s one thing for the fools who are gullible enough to still believe that smoking is cool to run their health into the ground and clog up our public health system (where we have to pay for their treatment as they slowly and miserably die), but what about the damage they cause to others? How about a newborn baby? They don’t get much say in it, but mothers who smoke during pregnancy damage the future fertility of their sons, new research has found. Experts used mice to test the long-term effects of mothers smoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Professor Eileen McLaughlin, who led the study, said: “Our results show that males of ‘smoking’ mothers have fewer sperm, which swim poorly, are abnormally shaped and fail to bind to eggs during in vitro fertilisation studies”. “Consequently, when these pups reach adulthood they are subfertile or infertile. “This is the first time we have been able to prove conclusively that male baby exposure to cigarette toxins in pregnancy and early life will damage later-life fertility.” Prof McLaughlin said the study was in mice, but the findings are very relevant to human health, as many men now in their 30’s and 40’s were exposed to cigarette toxins in the womb when it was less well known that smoking affected babies’ health. “These men have difficulty conceiving and this is associated with production of low numbers of poor quality sperm in their semen. Unfortunately about 25 per cent of young women today continue to smoke when they are pregnant and/ or breastfeeding,” she said. Successful evolution leads to a survival of the fittest trend, and Mother Nature knows that any weakness or flawed genetic trait that makes an organism less healthy or beneficial to the survival of its species needs to be removed for the benefit of all the rest. I guess Mother Nature is saying however you justify your reason for it, if you are stupid enough to suck poison into your body, then maybe your genes aren’t really wanted for the next generation... just my opinion.

FIV reduces your cat’s ability to fight off usually minor illnesses
VET
VIEW FROM ABOVE
Is your cat at risk of feline AIDS?
A victory even bigger than the NRL Final
What is Feline aids? Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) or feline aids, is a retrovirus that is specific to cats only. This virus is transmitted by cat bites and deep scratches. Cats that have access to the outdoors and can get into fights with other cats are most at risk of contracting the disease. This virus is generally slow acting and many cats that are infected do not show any symptoms. FIV is found worldwide and it is reported that in the Penrith area, as many as 20 per cent of outdoor cats may have this potentially deadly virus. What does FIV do to a cat? Infected cats may appear normal for years, however, infection eventually leads to a state of immune deficiency. This means that the immune system is unable to protect against infections to its full capacity. Normal bugs that are found in the environment can cause severe illness in cats that have a weakened immune system. These secondary infections are generally responsible for many of the diseases associated with FIV. Can I prevent my cat from becoming infected? Yes! The best way to make sure your cat does not become infected is by preventing exposure to the virus. The easiest way to do this is by keeping cats indoors and away from potentially infected neighbourhood cats. A series of vaccinations are also available to help and prevent FIV infections but these vaccinations do not guarantee 100 per cent protection, so preventing exposure is still important even for vaccinated cats. What happens if FIV is not diagnosed and treated? Without close monitoring and treatment, secondary infections that occur as a consequence of FIV can progress to life threatening conditions. Additionally, cats with FIV can develop various forms of cancer, blood diseases or kidney failure. It’s a serious disease that every cat owner should be aware of and take precautions against. If you have any questions about the health of your cat, please contact us on 4731 3055.
The Grand Final is a huge day for league supporters! The whole season, week after week, hard grind, tough, physically challenging, playing through pain and injury; it all comes together in one, last game – 80 minutes – and if you come out on top, you are the 2014 Premiers! And so the South Sydney Rabbitohs were the big winners. After 43 years! They finally had the glory. They experienced the emotion of the cheering crowd. They celebrated and were presented with the trophy, the recognition of a great victory. In Revelation, the last book of the Bible, we see a similar situation; a huge crowd, also cheering, but celebrating a much greater victory. This scene takes place at the end of all things when a vast crowd, too great to number, rejoices at the victory Jesus has won over death, the last enemy. This joyful crowd celebrates that in Jesus there is life, and not just life as we often think, but real life, eternal life, life that goes on forever with God. As the writer of Revelation tells us, because of Jesus’ victory, for those whose trust and hope is in him, for those who persevere with their faith and confidence in him, “never again will they hunger... or thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb (that is, Jesus) at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; he will guide them to springs of living water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.” What a wonderful day this will be! And how good will it be with your family and friends there!

When tickets went on sale for last weekend’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado all 50,000 sold out in 30 minutes. In its 33rd year, the Festival boasts of being the biggest celebration of beer in the United States with 700 breweries giving away tens of thousands of tasting samples of many of the 3,500 labels represented on the day. Many stalls also hosted lecture sessions on brewing, history, beer-and-food matching and anything else to do with the amber stuff, including the opportunity to meet the brewers. The American Homebrewer’s Association that boasts 43,000 members had a
stand offering advice to novices and seasoned home-brewers alike on how to make a top-drop at home for fun. Although the Great American Beer Festival was held from Thursday to Saturday, hotels, restaurants, bars, cafés, clubs and other drink outlets across Denver also hosted a huge range of events throughout the whole week… from beer dinners to rare beer tastings, beer and cheese and other food pairings – and at one place a full-on American breakfast fry-up with beer. Next year’s Festival will be held from September 24 to 26; you must be a minimum 21 years of age with photo ID to attend.

Londonderry local Steve Muscat coordinated the event this year, also contributing 10 tractors and a 106 litre Blackstone turbo Diesel affectionately called Tiny. “It isn’t just our Sydney club bringing machines anymore. For the last three years the rally has benefited from the Western Sydney Truck Club also making this a time for their members to bring their classic trucks, with many of the 300 trucks this year belonging to their members,” he said. “The Pioneer Timber Cutters also increased the size of their chainsaw display this year with chainsaw racing and carving displays. And this year for the first time, the steam train rides on both days got families out for the weekend.” Many of the vehicles on display were the result of years of tough restoration work and the Club is encouraging local residents to start thinking about getting to work on their classic vehicles in time for next year’s rally. “Many machines we save are not valuable, they only bring scrap value so we can afford to save them. But in terms of history and heritage, saving and fixing old machines (be they trucks, tractors or industrial engines), preserves a history for future generations, and it also feels good to start an engine for what may be the first time in decades,” said Stephen Gummerson of the Sydney Antique Machinery Club.
There are a huge range of choices for seniors looking to move into a retirement village and the path one should take is not always clear. Beginning this weekend, local seniors have the opportunity to browse all their possible options in the one location, at the Greater Western Sydney and Blue Mountains Retirement Village expo, which is being held at Penrith Panthers on Sunday, October 12 and Monday, October 13. The exhibition allows seniors interested in community living and their families to browse the retirement living options available in the region, from the latest resortstyle developments to established villages. “Deciding to make the move from the family home to a retirement village or resort is a decision many retirees probably dread, and yet residents overwhelmingly agree that it is the right choice,” a spokesperson said. A report released last year suggested that 98 per cent of seniors who had newly relocated from their family home to a retirement village were happy with their decision. The expo is open from 10am to 3pm on each day. Parking in the Panthers Car Park is free, as is admission. For more information visit www.retirementexpo.com.au.

There’s many different types of Jayco Camper Trailers on the market
– most have Queen size beds, 3 way fridge, fire extinguisher, rolling storage drawers and 12v LED lighting. The options include an external shower, slideout barbecue, bike racks and solar power system. All the outback campers now have Jayco’s innovative JTECH suspension, which replaces beam axles with individual stub axles. This enables each wheel to react independently to the road surface, while also lessening the chassis’ unsprung weight. The JTECH suspension creates easier towing due to a more smooth, stable and predictable ride. It delivers greater stability under tow because the wheels react independently of each other over uneven ground. A smoother ride is created due to coil springs and shock absorbers. Advantages of Jayco ownership include nationwide support from Australia’s largest dealer and service network, comprising more than 100 locations around the country. 24-hour roadside assist for three years and a comprehensive 12-month warranty are also included. For further information, please contact Jayco Sydney at 9623 1971.

They’re small to tow, and big to live: Check out the range mall to tow and big to live, Jayco’s Camper Trailers have been a favourite with Australian families for almost 40 years. Their high quality touring and outback models are ideal for the road tripping family looking for economy and class. There are seven models in Jayco Sydney’s 2014 range – Swift, Penguin, Eagle, Dove, Swan, Flamingo and Hawk. Setting up is simple and easy, making them the perfect touring or outback RV. With sleeping spaces for two to eight people and living quarters with lots of storage and plenty of space for dining and relaxing, these trailers really are amazing. The exterior is constructed using the latest hail and dent resistant fibreglass, and the heavy duty, weather resistant Australian made canvas is colour matched and double stitched for durability. Each model is coupled to electric brakes and fold out sections are protected by Flexcoat pebble guards. Standard inclusions lead in with a 4burner gas grill, innerspring mattresses

So much to see and do, you might have to go twice! he Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show is the most interactive 4WD Show in Australia, and in 2014 it gets even bigger! The 4WD and Adventure Show will be on again this October from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th, at Western Sydney International Dragway, Eastern Creek. Now in its fifth year, the Show is always a popular event for outdoor enthusiasts. Show Director Peter Woods said the 2014 event will offer even more to visitors with product displays, entertainment and attractions, and special guests. “The 4WD and Adventure Show is such a great event because it is the place to go for new products. You can check out all the new releases in camper trailers, SUVs and 4WD vehicles, camping gear, 4WD accessories and so much more,” he said. “In 2014 we have taken the Show to a whole new level, with new exhibitors, bigger exhibitions and more attractions for the family to enjoy. “In particular, we are excited to have opened a whole new element to the Show that we’ve never had before, with several new caravan dealers exhibiting for the

The Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show is back this month first time. The Show is a must for anyone who enjoys being outdoors and with so much to see and do, you might even need to come back twice to see it all!”
The Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show is a huge event for entertainment; and this year will be no exception, with so much to see and do.
“We are very pleased to be working with Pat Callinan from 4x4 Adventures, and we will see Pat at the Show again this year,” Peter said. “Pat will speak on the Engel Bush Camp Stage and share some of his stories from his travels across Australia. “We also have Jason Andrews from the popular program All4Adventure. Jason is well recognised by anyone who loves a good, honest outdoor TV program, and Jason certainly has some interesting and funny stories to share!” Peter said other special guests included TV’s Ernie Dingo, who will host the Engel Bush Camp Stage, and well known presenter Allan Gray – Ask Allan – who will be part of the line up on the new Fourby Forum information stage. “There really is something for everyone at this year’s Show, and all for the one price!” he said. “The Show has an entry price of $16 for adults and $8 for kids, then all the activities within the Show are free.” Tickets and more Show information can be found on the Show’s website at www.4wdshow.com.au. Don’t miss out this year!
