essica Harris has known more grief in her lifetime than most of us. The 22-year-old Penrith resident has lost not one but both her parents and their deaths were entirely preventable. Both of Mrs Harris’s parents, mum Star Delaney and dad Shane Naylor, took their own lives. Incredibly, Mrs Harris has drawn strength from her loss and is now campaigning for better mental health support in the community. She says it is hard to speak out because the grieving process takes time, however, she doesn’t want anyone else in the community to experience the loss that she has battled with. “It has taken me a long time to build up the courage to speak about it, I needed time to grieve,” Mrs Harris said. “I am lucky that I have wonderful people in my life to support me. But there was not enough support offered to my parents, especially my dad who tried to reach out for assistance. “I want to see mental health elevated as an issue we can talk about. If my dad had talked about his problems, this may never have happened. “Both their deaths were completely preventable, but mental health and suicide is so taboo, everyone is too afraid to talk about them.” Mrs Harris said that she was not incredibly close to her mother as her parents divorced when she was very young. But there was a knock on the door in March 2010 that Mrs Harris will never forget. Story continues on » p. 18

errington residents have started a campaign in a desperate attempt to stop a $5 million development from being built in the heart of their suburb. A development application has been submitted to Penrith Council proposing a bowling alley, function centre and gym for the vacant block on the corner of Dunheved Road and John Oxley Avenue. Resident since 1975, Geoff Smith, said that the community holds grave concerns about noise levels, traffic impacts and the safety of the development. “We understand that the owner has the right to develop the site, but as affected residents we also have the right to protest it,” Mr Smith said. “The main concern is the traffic impact. This intersection is already very busy and with 260 plus cars coming in and out via this residential road, the traffic impact is going to be very great. “We also are concerned about the noise levels. This is a residential area and a function centre that is open until 12am is going to be very disruptive.” He said that he and his wife were originally attracted to the area because the

Bonjour! I’m writing this column after spending the last couple of weeks in Paris and London on a bit of a mid-year break – two beautiful cities that both tell so many stories. By the time you’re reading this, it’s highly likely I’ll be somewhere up in the air, learning again what life is like as a canned sardine. And yes, the trip was deliberately planned around Penrith’s NRL bye – I’m that crazy – and had the great bonus of a much more time friendly World Cup schedule! For the many of you who I am sure have visited these cities at some point in your life, you know just how special they are. For those who haven’t, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. In Paris, the sky scrapers and big city lights are replaced by amazing architecture and buildings that have stood for hundreds upon hundreds of years. Here, history and traditions mean something and are widely respected by both the locals and tourists alike. Apart from the financial district, there’s only one building that’s taller than seven storeys in the city – and it’s expected to be pulled down because the locals believe it’s an eyesore. The one big exception is of course the Eiffel Tower – the views from the top are stunning. I did manage to find the one bar in town showing the second State of Origin match live – on a big screen, with blaring sound. There may have only been about six of us in the pub but we certainly made plenty of noise when the Blues finally broke that drought. The transport system in Paris is particularly good – the metro works relatively seamlessly (except when there’s a strike, like on our first day there!) and the bus system is equally easy to navigate. The same goes for London – anybody who has been here knows just how incredibly well

You never feel like there’s a safety issue

the underground tube works. I don’t think I’ve waited more than three minutes for a train here in London and the integrated ticketing system is something we can only hope the Opal system delivers for us at home. I’m conscious of saying the transport systems here leave Sydney for dead, because obviously it’s difficult to compare the frantic nature of these city centres with train journeys to suburban Sydney, but you certainly get the feeling that the locals have a lot more trust in the reliability of the public transport system than we do. The locals are very much in mourning over England’s efforts in the World Cup – they’ve gone from huge window displays wishing their side well to sales getting rid of as many English jerseys as possible for rock bottom prices. There’s probably some lessons we can learn from our British friends about over-regulation and rules too – from the little things like splitting bills in restaurants being widely accepted and even expected, through to the bigger things like handling alcohol issues. Restrictions in the Sydney CBD and forcing bottle shops to close at 10pm have been big talking points in Australia over the last year, and if you speak to people here, they simply can’t believe it. They’re used to being able to pop down to the local supermarket and pick up a six pack at any time – and for an incredibly low price, too. They’re also used to openly spilling out of bars onto the street, standing around and talking with mates while enjoying a few quiet ales. Despite the extraordinary number of pubs and ease of alcohol access, you never feel like there’s a safety issue or even any major worries – perhaps we could learn something from that. It’s inevitable when you’re overseas to compare things to where you live – for better or worse. But no matter what comparisons you make, there’s no place like home!

orpus Christi student Alannah Hader has been announced as Penrith Council Junior Mayor for 2014. Each year as part of Local Government Week, Penrith Council hosts a Junior Council to encourage local Year 5 and 6 students to take an interest in local government. Alannah said she is very excited to have

been chosen as Junior Mayor for 2014. â€œI thought applying was a good idea because being Mayor sounded really cool,â€? she said. â€œI think the most difficult thing about running the meeting will be, running the meeting. I havenâ€™t spoken in front of such a large audience before.â€? The 15 Junior Councillors will debate two topics at a special meeting in August, with the help of their Councillor mentors. They will be debating whether a theme park should be built in Penrith, and how

to improve local playgrounds, parks and sporting fields. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said that the students will learn much about the role of Council. â€œWe do a lot of things that people donâ€™t really recognise,â€? he said. â€œBeing on Council is a pretty big job, so how do we do it? We listen to the community, we listen to their ideas and concerns. â€œWe will soon be listening to you in a few short weeks and I am sure you will all enjoy the experience very much.â€?

Shock shooting after Origin Police looking for witnesses who may have seen shooter earlier at Colyton Hotel

Just hours later, at about 3.15am on Thursday morning, a 21-year-old Colyton man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with murder. Police believe the killing was targeted – the result of an earlier conflict whilst the pair had been out watching State of Origin together. “It will be alleged that there was an incident that preceded at the Colyton Hotel. If there were any persons who may have been present at the hotel at that time, please contact St Marys Police or Crime Stoppers,” St Marys Local Area Command Crime Manager, Barry Vincent said. Local residents say this is the first incident of any kind in their area, afraid that this may be the beginning of something more. “I used to go for my walk at 10 o’clock at night by myself and have never had a problem. I don’t know why this is happening. We moved here because it is a quiet area for the kids but now, I am scared,” said one resident, Natasha. The 21-year-old was refused bail and faced Mt Druitt Local Court last Thursday. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

quiet Colyton street was rocked with the sound of gunfire last week as a 21-year-old male allegedly gunned down a local teenager, killing him with a single shot. Police were called to Nevada Avenue, Colyton, with reports of a shooting just after 11pm last Wednesday evening, hours after the State of Origin finished. They arrived on the scene to find Jed Coates, a local 18-year-old, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his neck. Local father of two, Louie, was arriving home after watching Origin when he spotted a commotion in his street. “I had the kids in the car and I could see the guy lying on the ground but I didn’t want the kids to see him, so I took them home and made sure they were safe before I went back down there,” he said. “We came around the corner and my sister-in-law was standing there on the phone and there was a police officer on the ground [performing CPR]. “Even the police didn’t know what had happened yet. His [the victim’s] little mate was there crying... then it was just chaos.” Police continued to perform CPR until Ambulance paramedics arrived and took

Police snapshot Police on the look out for impersonator in Londonderry

Police have recovered over 100 stolen items from an Emu Plains home and with the hopes of returning the items, are now calling on the public to report anything they believe may have been stolen from their homes. As a result of police investigations, at about 12.20pm on Thursday, June 19, police attached to Penrith Local Area Command executed a search warrant at Koloona Drive, Emu Plains. At the home, police recovered a significant amount of stolen property, which is believed to have been taken from cars and homes in Emu Plains, Emu Heights and surrounding areas. Police recovered jewellery, shoes, wallets, credit cards, laptops and other items. Police are urging members of the public who have had property stolen to contact police.

Police are searching for a person who was allegedly impersonating a police officer in Londonderry last week. At about 12pm on Thursday, June 19, a car was travelling on The Driftway at Londonderry when it was approached by a vehicle from behind. The red Holden Commodore SV6, acting as a police vehicle, indicated for the first car to pull over. The driver of the first car pulled over and the Commodore stopped behind it. A man got out of the Commodore and approached the first car, asking the driver to hand over their licence. The driver became suspicious and asked to see some identification and details, but the man drew a knife and ran away. The man was six-foot tall, medium build, Caucasian appearance with short black hair.

Teenager loses control of car at Regentville roundabout

A family has escaped harm after a p-plater lost control of his vehicle this weekend, driving it into a Regentville home. At about 9.40pm on Saturday, June 21, an 18-year-old man was driving his white Holden Commodore on Mulgoa Road. The driver was negotiating a roundabout on Glenmore Parkway when he lost control of the vehicle. The car crossed over Gibbes Road, hitting a fence and a granny flat at the rear of a Loftus Street house before coming to a stop. No-one was injured during the incident. Police are anticipating the driver of the car will be issued with an infringement notice.

Police are investigating the attempted robbery of a petrol station on the Northern Road, South Penrith. At about 3.24am on Thursday, June 19, a Caucasian male with an Australian accent, described as being between 50 and 60-years-old and about 155cm tall with brown or blonde long hair with a fringe and wearing a large black poncho, entered the service station. The man selected items and tried to purchase them before producing a hammer and demanding money. The station attendant was able to back away to a safe location, then lock the hammer-wielding man inside the store. He escaped before police arrived.

Cr Fowler said that 737 Jet is a welcomed addition to Penrith’s “adventure capital” reputation. “We are fast becoming the entertainment capital in NSW, and a facility such as this is complemented by IFLY Downunder skydiving and the future Badgerys Creek airport,” he said. enrith Mayor Ross Fowler is usually very composed, but after taking a simulated flight lesson at Penrith’s 737 Jet, he was elated. “That was bloody brilliant,” he exclaimed, after taking a half hour demonstration flight on the custom built simulator. The brainchild of Karina and Steve Wally, the Glenmore Park couple are hopeful of one day building an entire simulator centre right in the heart of Penrith. “Steve actually used to build simulators for the military and so he decided to build a simulator for the 737 jet for us. The idea was originally to have the simulator for pilot training purposes, but we have also decided to open it up to the public,” Mrs Wally said. “The 737 Jet is the most common plane in Australia, used for most domestic flights. This simulator does not move, but instead has a large screen that gives an incredibly accurate experience of what you would see whilst flying, based on your reactions.” In the works is a second simulator that is mounted on hydraulics, replicating movements felt in the plane. Mr Wally said it will be an incredible experience. “When the simulator is mounted, you

enrith Councillors have vowed to protect the pristine bushland at the Orchard Hills defence site amid debate over the alignment of the South West Rail extension. Speaking to Councillors on Monday evening, concerned resident Geoff Brown urged Council to protect the land. “The Orchard Hills defence site the most pristine example of bushland in western Sydney and it is this Council’s current position that it should be protected. Council should stand by its

original commitment,” he said. Consultation on the exact alignment of the rail line will begin in the later half of 2014. In its submission Penrith Council stated that it wants a train station in the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area, a station within the Penrith Health and Education Precinct and a ‘Y line’ where the corridor intersects with the Western line to enable a direct connection to Penrith Station. “I don’t believe that this submission changes our stance on the Orchard Hills defence land, it should be protected and that remains our position,” Cr Karen McKeown said.

man has been critically injured in a hit-and-run incident in Penrith this week, which has left local police searching for the driver of an unknown silver vehicle. Just before 7.30pm on Tuesday, June 24, a 51-year-old local man was crossing Parker Street near the Great Western Highway. He had reached the southbound lanes when he was hit by an oncoming car, which witnesses say continued along the road without stopping. “The last known sighting of the vehicle was turning left onto the Great Western Highway travelling in an eastbound direction... The vehicle has been described as a silver sedan, possibly a Honda Civic or a vehicle matching that description,” said Penrith Local Area Command Acting Inspector, Peter Murphy. The incident is being investigated by the Crash Investigation Unit who are currently following a number of leads but are also appealing for anyone with information to come forward so that the driver of the vehicle can be identified. “We are also appealing to the driver of this motor vehicle, whoever they may be, to come forward and tell us their side of what happened in relation to the collision,” Acting Inspector Murphy said.

ranebrook High School students have successfully lobbied Penrith Council for new playground facilities at the Callisto Drive playground near their school. In a first for Council, the students presented a slide show to Council on their proposal at Monday evening’s Ordinary Meeting. Micaela Price and Vicki Cotter told the Council how new play equipment was desperately needed. “We have concerns about the green spaces in Cranebrook,” they said. “They are run down and disrespected. We would like to see new seats, shelters, bins, play equipment and disability accessibility. “There are two sites that we would like to see upgraded; the Callisto Drive playground and the one on Andromeda Drive.” The students were aided with their submission through Cranebrook High School’s Youth Leadership Program and Council’s Place Management and Parks Department. he political divide on Penrith Council was far and wide on Monday when a heated debate over the Federal Government’s budget broke out. Councillor Prue Car received a report detailing the impacts of the budget on Penrith Council. The report found that changes to the Local Government Financial Assistance Grant would cost $2.104 million over the next three years. Cr Mark Davies was quick to defend the Federal Government budget. “I too am disappointed that indexation was cut, but what upsets me more, in fact makes me angry moreso than disap-

olice launched a high-visibility operation in Penrith this week to ensure our public transportation options are as safe as possible. On Friday, June 20, officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command teamed up with Roads and Maritime Services to conduct an operation at transport hubs in Penrith and Blacktown, focusing on the safety compliance of buses and taxis. During the operation, 210 buses were inspected and 14 defects were identified, with one bus deemed unroadworthy due

to broken break lights. All defects were rectified before buses could return to operative duties. 19 taxis were also inspected, with 11 defect notices issues and in addition, 10 non-compliance notices were issued, which resulted in four taxis being taken off the roads. Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said: “There is very little room for error with heavy vehicles; a crash involving a bus is far more likely to be serious or fatal. Regular buses can carry up to 50 passengers at a time – that is a lot of lives at risk if any safety measures have been compromised.”

his weekend marks the completion of Operation Unification, a national police effort to locate and seize illegal firearms. From Monday last week (June 16) local police have encouraged residents to contact them with any information that may lead to the discovery of illegal weapons in the area. Over 4,300 guns have been seized by NSW police since January. Penrith officers just months ago halted an illegal firearms syndicate.

“If it wasn’t for finds like this, those firearms would still be in the streets. The illegal gun trade is prevalent in our community, as demonstrated earlier this year through Strike Force Bootle,” said Penrith Police Commander, Superintendent Brett McFadden. “We have it out here, we have proved it is out here and we need assistance from the community to put an end to it.” Though the Operation will be wrapping up on Sunday, June 29, police will not stop their hunt for illegal weapons. “You can call anonymously if you wish. Our priority is to recover the illegal guns,” Superintendent McFadden said.

Cancer Council says celebrities, sponsors are being used to push junk food on kids

he majority of parents are sick of seeing junk food ads targeted at their children, saying they would support an entire ban in the name of reducing obesity in kids. A NSW Cancer Council study has found that over 70 per cent of adults would support a ban on unhealthy food advertisements directed at children, with 80 per cent saying they are concerned that popular children’s characters or celebrities are being used to promote such foods. “The main bad type of advertising I have noticed directed at children is through the sponsorship of children’s athletics,” said local mother of two, Shiralee Hamm. “Here you are doing your healthy sport but it is sponsored by McDonald’s and the children get a voucher for fast food at the end.” The Leonay mum said she would support a ban but also suggested that childhood obesity does not only come down to advertising. “We believe it is also about what we emphasise as parents. We need to control the junk food our children have access to,” she said. In the wake of these findings, the NSW Cancer Council has released a new food marketing report, called Children’s Health or Corporate Wealth, exploring the level of promotion and channels the food industry uses to promote unhealthy foods to children. “With nearly a quarter of Australian children already overweight or obese, we know parents struggle to get their children to eat healthy foods. When you add into the mix the sophisticated marketing

They told us that she had died, she had taken her own life at Manly in February and they were only now able to track down her family,” she recalled. “It was very difficult for me because I was in Year 12 doing my HSC and I had never experienced such a loss before.” Mrs Harris’s father had a new partner but sadly that relationship then broke down and in 2012 her father also began to struggle emotionally. “He was a really manly man, he didn’t talk about how he was feeling,” Mrs Harris said. “He tried to take his life in May or June 2012 but fortunately he was taken to Nepean Hospital in time for treatment. “In August he again tried to take his life and I was so incredibly worried about him, we didn’t know what to do. After the second time he actually realised that he needed help and tried to reach out.”

Mr Naylor began seeing a counsellor on a semi-regular basis but Mrs Harris remained very concerned for his welfare. Then, one morning just weeks later, police recovered the body of Mrs Harris’s father from a South Penrith park. “I don’t blame the nurses, or the counsellor, the resources to support my dad were just not there,” she said. Mr Naylor was one of 1,901 males and 634 females who died by suicide in 2012. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics almost twice as many people die from suicide as from road related deaths. The Federal Government says that it is making progress on mental health issues, but the correct approach is needed. “People with mental illness deserve the same standards of access and treatment as those with a physical illness. One in five Australians will experience mental health challenges in their lifetime, it is indiscriminate and sadly has a devastating effect on relationships on friends and families,” Lindsay MP Fiona Scott said. “In March the Federal and State Govern-

ments opened the new Mental Health Unit at Nepean Hospital which has almost doubled the number of available mental health beds. “In the 2014/15 Federal Budget, the Coalition bolstered mental health services with $18 million announced in the Budget to establish a National Centre for Excellence in Youth Mental Health, $23.4 million towards the Mental Health Nurse Incentive Programme and $200 million allocated to dementia research.” Federal Health Minister Peter Dutton also announced a review of the mental health system in February. Services like Lifeline Australia, who provide 24-hour crisis support for people contemplating suicide, say even more funding is required. Lifeline receives more than 50 calls a day from people at high risk of suicide and they receive a new call from somewhere in Australia every 50 seconds. “Lifeline Australia is incredibly grateful for the support of not only the Australian Government, but communities and

individuals across the country helping us to save lives, and achieve our vision of an Australia free of suicide,” Lifeline CEO Jane Hayden said. “However, given that suicide deaths recently reached a 10 year peak, we do ask the Australian Government to address, and increase funding to the priority areas of mental health, including suicide prevention. “We anticipate that over 1 million calls per year will be made to Lifeline’s 13 11 14 crisis line by 2015; any additional funding from individual donors, corporates and the government will help us to close the gap on unanswered calls.” Mrs Harris’s petition calling for more resources is available at www.change.org. People of Penrith upset with Federal budget Weeks on and the budget is still receiving vigorous opposition from Lindsay residents. The Lindsay community is asking why the Abbott Government promised no new taxes before the election, and then added a legion of new taxes and levies at their first budget. They feel betrayed by local member for Lindsay Fiona Scott. I have never had so many from our electorate of Lindsay come up to me and strongly vent their distaste for the budget and the abandonment of a voice for them. This Government promised

I am astonished that no one seems to have given thought to a more pressing and important matter. Planning a new traffic bridge is urgently needed. I am someone who is passionate about Australian history and would not normally suggest that an old building has outlived its use. However the Victoria Bridge was built quickly and cheaply to meet the needs and finances of the government of its time. It is now time to bite the bullet. Penrith Council’s 2012-2013 Annual Report received a Silver Award at the recent Australasian Reporting Awards in recognition of the exceptional coverage provided and the overall

quality of the document. “I commend Penrith City Council’s success at the 2014 Australasian Reporting Awards – Celebrating Excellence in Reporting,” Mayor Ross Fowler said. “This award continues Council’s success in reporting over the past few years; in 2009 we received a Silver Award and we have been the recipient of Bronze Awards in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.” RMS have provided Council with design plans for intersection upgrades proposed for Blacktown Road and Richmond Road, Londonderry including a pair of dual lane roundabouts. The proposal includes the removal of the sliplane exiting George Street onto Richmond Road. Cr Marcus Cornish suggested that the removal of the slip lane may cause further traffic congestion. Council staff advised that the removal of the slip lane would assist merging traffic entering Richmond Road wishing to exit the next roundabout turning right onto The Northern Road, Londonderry. Council’s Acting Traffic Engineering Coordinator also advised that the possibility of a right turn restriction from Bennett Road into Blacktown Road will be reviewed once the roundabouts are operational.

for women in other countries who do not have access to bras. We are so lucky most of us can just go out and buy a bra when we need one,” Ms Wilson said. The bras collected by Nepean Hospital have been donated to the Girl Guides and East Blaxland Community Pharmacy, where they will be sorted before being sent to Uplift. Donations are welcomed until the end of June.

y wearing a red nose today (Friday, June 27), local people aren’t imitating clowns and they certainly aren’t trying out a new look; they are showing their support and advocating for SIDS and Kids. Red Nose Day is the major annual fundraiser for SIDS and Kids, an organisation supporting the thousands of Australian families who lose a child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other conditions each year. By taking part in Red Nose Day, local people are supporting and fundraising for research into stillbirth, SIDS and safe baby sleeping practices so that the parents of the future do not have to go through the trauma of losing a child just months, sometimes weeks, into life like local mum, Jessica Robar. Ms Robar was preparing for her son Jameson’s first birthday when he was torn away from her in a suspected case of SIDS earlier this year. The pain and grief is almost unbearable for her but not as unbearable as the thought of the thousands of other families who may go through the same pain if a cure is not found. “Even before our son had passed away we were fundraising for SIDS and Kids. Supporting this cause can help with research, support families affected and hopefully one day find a prevention,” Ms Robar said. “People have often said to us how unnatural it is to have to bury your child and it really is. It is horrible to see how quickly the infants section of the cemetery can be

filled with the sadly lost young lives and the death of a child during pregnancy.” Supporting SIDS and Kids is also a way to show families who have lost a child that they are cared for and supported by their own community, a fact that drove Ms Robar to set up an Everyday Hero fundraising web page in Jameson’s honour, which she hopes will be supported by the Penrith community she grew up in. “Before I created my son’s Everyday Hero page I didn’t even know what the term ‘bereavement’ meant, it is a term I am now faced with a lot through support networks. Money raised for SIDS and Kids also goes towards bereavement support programs for the families little souls leave behind.” SIDS and Kids relies almost entirely on the support of the community, from which over $16 million has been donated and devoted to research. “Since 1988, we have helped thousands of Australians navigate the unimaginable grief of the death of a baby or child. For every one child that dies, more than 60 people are impacted and may require counselling and support,” SIDS and Kids CEO Associate Professor Leanne Raven said. “Red Nose Day helps us fund support services along with research into the causes and prevention of the sudden death of babies during pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood. We also educate thousands of parents, carers and health professionals on how to reduce the risk of SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents.” Local residents can donate to the organisation through Jameson’s Everyday Hero page by searching the website, or by visiting www.rednoseday.com.au.

I have actually been quite preoccupied at the moment so I don’t really have time to think about things like that.

With the rise of the health and fitness subculture has come an influx of mobile phone applications (apps) dedicated to helping you improve your diet and exercise habits. Millions of health and fitness apps, featuring workouts, meal plans, exercise plans and calorie counters, have been downloaded by people across the globe but the question of whether they are actually doing any good has been left unanswered until now. Those who regularly use the health and fitness apps they download are sure to reap the benefits but only half of us actually use them and of the half that use them, only one in four people do so regularly, according to a global Opera Mediaworks study. “I guess if you’re still using it more than a week after you pay for it is a good start! Not many people are. Just hopefully what it’s telling you to do is what you actually need to be doing,” said fitness guru David Stein. “An app can’t compare to a good gym or physical contact with a person who knows what they’re talking about. “There is no correct program for everybody or even for groups of people. A good health professional prescribes the right exercise for an individual’s needs.”

Mayor Ross Fowler attended the centre recently and presented two $1,000 scholarships to students who are attending the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre, which uses music therapy to engage children with a disability in new creative experiences. Music therapy uses improvised live

music to build a relationship between music therapist and participant where they interact and communicate directly through music. Chief Executive Officer Belinda Leonard said Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre is grateful for the support from Council. “The assistance with payment of fees provides welcome relief to families who find it challenging to juggle tight budgets while caring for a child with a disability and attending therapies,” she said.

gruelling 100km run through the Blue Mountains, to be completed in under 28-hours, wouldn’t be on the to-do list of your average person. But for two Penrith Police officers, it was a challenge that had to be faced in the name of charity. Constable Rob Capewell and Constable Nathan Snelling, ran the North Face 100 earlier this year, completing the run with hours to spare. “For the last 10 years I have been doing an ultramarathon once a year – it’s an excuse to keep myself in shape. This year it was all about doing something to say thank you to the Sydney Children’s Hospital for everything they have done for Zoe,” said Constable Capewell. Zoe is Constable Capewell’s daughter, who has spent countless hours at the Sydney Children’s Hospital with scoliosis, for which she had to wear a brace. The Penrith Constables raised over $1,000 for the Orthotics Department at the hospital, to assist in purchasing a $250,000 body scanning machine called a CADCAM System. “At the moment, the kids have to go through a gruelling six-hour process where their bodies are covered in a substance, almost like paper mache,

enrith’s musical community has been in mourning this week after Ray Gallagher, often affectionately referred to as “Lofty” for his towering height, sadly passed away in the early hours of Thursday, June 19. A very talent musician, Mr Gallagher held numerous State and National titles on Tuba and went onto placing fourth in the World Instrumental Titles held in Britain. Lofty spent many years performing in Military Bands and has served his country in Malaysia and Vietnam. Mr Gallagher devoted much of his life to the development of youth bands and young musicians in the region. His most notable achievements included the establishment of the Mount Druitt District Band, Penrith Valley Concert Band, St Marys Brass Band and Penrith City Concert Band. The York Public School Concert Band also held a special place in Lofty’s heart. After starting the band 30 odd years ago he mentored and moulded many young musicians that attended the school. Many have followed in the footsteps of Lofty and are now professional musicians, music teachers and conductors across Australia and the world. Several of his students travelled from

Ray ‘Lofty’ Gallagher far and wide to be with him in his final moments last Wednesday evening. It is a fitting testament to the strong influence he had on numerous young musicians across the Penrith District. During his final moments he shared in singing and humming songs that he taught his students throughout the years.

Minister for Finance and Services, Dominic Perrottet, and Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies toured the Western Sydney Records Centre in Kingswood last week, which includes 600 linear kilometres of records and archives. “We don’t want records to just be preserved and then filed away, we want to bring them to life and make them accessible,” Minister Perrottet said. “The funding will enable upgrades to key systems which provide access to existing digital content, improve online service delivery and enhance access to information about archives. “Archives are not only the cornerstone of open and accountable government, but they also protect citizens’ rights and document the history of the diverse and evolving community of NSW.”

Tanya Davies MP said the investment reflected the government’s commitment to western Sydney. “I’m excited that important records from our community will now be digitised and made more widely available to the rest of NSW,” she said. Director of State Records Authority of NSW, Geoff Hinchcliffe, also welcomed the announcement of a further four years of funding for the Digital State Archives initiative, as it will allow an expansion of this innovative program, which converts the State’s ‘born digital’ government records to permanent digital archives. “The ability to accept and preserve the State’s born digital records as long-term State archives moves NSW into the forefront of the digital age,” Mr Hinchcliffe said. State Records holds the largest collection of records relating to the history of NSW. These include files, photographs, maps, plans and volumes.

In some cases that may be true but Penrith residents should be proud of the efforts made by Penrith City Council to build relations particularly in China. Penrith Council has long standing relations with the city of Kunshan, north west of

Shanghai and Xicheng District in Beijing and various Mayors have worked hard to establish mutual trust and confidence in each others’ ability to work for common good. As a result of successive visits led by Council it has become possible for the PBA to productively engage with business organisations in both these cities as well as in Gangseo gu in South Korea. In 2012 PBA signed a Memoran-

dum of Understanding (MOU) with the Gangseo chapter of the Seoul Chamber of Commerce and Industry here in Penrith. This was followed by the signing of similar MOUs last month with the powerful Kunshan Chamber of Commerce and the Xicheng District Association of Industry and Commerce with representing a range of local Chinese businesses. The ATO states that to claim a tax deduction a purchase must have been made in the last financial year and must be work related. The claim must be something that you won’t be reimbursed for, and you may need a receipt as evidence. Below is a breakdown of what can be claimed across some different work environments. Working expenses – Working and operating expenses can be claimed in the year you incur them. Examples of claims that can be made in the year incurred include: advertising and sponsorship expenses; wages, bonuses or allowances; business operating expenses; business travel expenses; repairs and maintenance costs; parking fees; clothing expenses (corporate wardrobes and uniforms, occupation-specific clothing, protective clothing); insurance premiums; rent or lease of business premises. Capital expenses – Capital expenses are assets that have a longer life than a year and must be claimed over time. You can’t claim the total cost of an asset in the first year if it cost more than $6,500. Instead you can claim the depreciation in value of the asset over time. Examples of capital expense assets that can be claimed over time include: computers, printers and other equipment; motor vehicles; furniture, carpets and curtains. Winter driving in Australia can present a number of dangers that motorists should be aware of, no matter how long or short the trip. 1980 Formula One world champion and Lexus Ambassador Alan Jones understands how to drive and survive in the most difficult conditions, and has some good advice for motorists this winter. “Vehicle maintenance is especially important in winter due to the effect that cold weather can have on batteries and cooling systems, so make sure your car’s servicing is up to date,” Mr Jones said. “And as with any time of the year, you need to be on the lookout for bad driver behaviour and use common sense. Unfortunately not everybody thinks about safety when they drive, but it’s the responsibility of every road user.” Mr Jones has a number of additional tips that can help drivers deal with problems they might not encounter at other times of the year. Maintain your vehicle: Make sure you have a pre-trip safety inspection. Older batteries, poorly serviced vehicles and worn out items such as windscreen wipers, can make driving more difficult. Look ahead: While this is important all year round, roads in some parts of the country may include additional hazards such as ice or snow. Keep it clean: Dirty cars are harder to see, and can be harder to see out of if the windows are dirty and fogged up.

enrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu believes his side are missing the hunger they once had before their historic Shute Shield win earlier this month. The Emus have now lost two straight matches since their win against Northern Suburbs on June 7 and haven’t looked the same side since. Penrith’s most recent loss came at the hands of Southern Districts, who defeated

the Emus 44-22, despite the scores being level at half time. “I believe my boys think that one game, one win, is the rest of the season, and it’s not like that at all,” Tu’ipulotu said. “The boys have to understand as much as we want to win all the time, our opposition do as well.” This Saturday afternoon the Emus will return to Nepean Rugby Park for the first time since their rare win earlier this month when they take on the second-placed Warringah. It’ll be Back to Penrith Day, celebrating everything ‘Emus’.

he GWS Giants will head into this Saturday night’s blockbuster against the Sydney Swans at the SCG oozing with confidence… and for good reason too. Not only have the Giants recorded back-to-back wins, including their first away win, over the past two weeks, but in the opening round of the season they defeated their crosstown rivals by 32 points – one of the biggest upsets in AFL history. Conducted as race five it was a good result for favourite backers when Free Will ($2.80) was one of three winners for driver Gavin Fitzpatrick. Gavin gave it every chance by obtaining the one out one back spot and when pulled out at the 400m he was able to cut down the leader and second favourite Galilee to go on for a nice win. Race one gave David Linden a good win with Happyever Laughter ($6.00) who was first out but then sat behind the leader Nine Mile Maiden. Getting out on the home turn he was too good for El Mega who was running on well. The second race gave some value to his followers when Shantung ($16.70) led all the way for driver David Morris. Favourite Bells Beach House sat outside him throughout but could make no impression in the run to the post. Swift Exit ($9.70) driven by David White

proved too good for well backed King Of Swing in the third. He was able to go to an early lead and although King of Swing made a strong mid race move he could not get around the leader Swift Exit. My Sweet Pawsha ($13.10) gave Gavin Fitzpatrick one of his wins in the fourth. She had a soft run three back on the inside and when able to get out at the 400m she quickly ran down the leader Respected for a nice win. Iam Ready ($2.30) gave Blake Fitzpatrick the first of a double when he was much too good in the sixth. He made a strong run from midfield to lead after the bell and was then never ever threatened. Leisa Beryl ($3.10) driven by Blake Fitzpatrick had to work hard, winning the eighth. She worked three wide mid race to sit outside the leader Captain Barbosa then withstood a fast finish from Alartmicksue.

ondonderry’s Dave Sieders took out his first round win at Northern Territory’s Hidden Valley Raceway last weekend during the latest round of the Australian V8 Ute Series. The 29-year-old had a weekend to remember finishing first in two of the three races to close Kris Walton’s lead to just two points in the overall Championships standings. “I’m just so happy to finally tick off the round win here in Darwin,” Sieders said after the race. “It’s probably been one of our most frustrating results, because we’ve been so fast here, and been on the podium three other times, so it’s great to finally take this round win.” After winning race one on Saturday, Sieders had the task of drawing the reverse grid lotto, which meant he started Sunday morning’s second race in 14th spot. He ended up pushing up to 10th in a hard fought finish. Combined racing points again had Sieders starting on the front row for the final

Skates on for SIDS kids Roller derby league hold skate-a-thon at Jamison Park to raise much needed funds and I found this to be a great way to raise money to help those affected by SIDS, not just the kids but the families also.” Also skating on Sunday will be neonatal intensive care nurse Niccy McOrrie, who also has a close connection with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. “I have always been passionate about supporting and promoting SIDS, as I have lost a sister from it,” she said. “I think this led me to work in the Special Care Nursery and help new parents and their newborns. Such little changes can make a lifetime of a difference.” There will be many others in attendance who have either been touched by SIDS or simply just want to lend a hand in raising money for the important cause. In addition to the skate-a-thon, the Western Sydney Rollers are also holding a sausage sizzle and selling Red Nose Day merchandise at the event. enrith’s local roller derby league, the Western Sydney Rollers, are strapping on their skates (and red noses) this Sunday when they host a skate-a-thon to raise money for SIDS and Kids Australia. With events being held by roller derby leagues around the country, skaters will attempt to skate as many laps of Jamison Park as they can between 10am and 2pm this Sunday, June 29. It’s an event that will need plenty of stamina, but is sure to create plenty of smiles too. Skate-a-thon organiser, Luke Hills, survived SIDS as an infant and has supported research into the syndrome, also known as cot death, for many years now. “I believe I was lucky as a child with SIDS. I had many people around to help protect me and look after me, not everyone has that,” he said. “When the opportunity to help organise this event came up, I felt the need to help out in whatever way I could. he Penrith District Netball Association will send four young teams to Illawarra this weekend to compete at the 2014 Netball NSW State Age Championships. The Association will field a team in each group with their U15, U14, U13 and U12 sides all contesting the top Championship division. All up 306 teams representing 90 Associations from across the state will converge on two venues to contest three days of back to back netball in one of the largest sporting events in the southern hemisphere.

The 46th State Age Championships will be held on the first weekend of the winter school holidays and will see Illawarra Netball Association host the top two divisions, Championship and Division 2, while Division Three and Division Four will be contested at Campbelltown District Netball Association. With four divisions in four age groups, the State Age Championships will showcase potential future stars of netball. The Penrith Association will be hoping for a much improved result in this year’s Championships after last year failing to finish among the top teams. Liverpool City, Eastwood Ryde and Sutherland Shire were crowned champions in their age divisions in 2013.

enrith’s most popular sporting facility, Jamison Park, will over the next year undergo its biggest transformation to date with the announcement of a $1.86 million upgrade. The much-needed facelift, which will include the addition of sporting and gym facilities, new playground, floodlighting and amenities, was announced on Tuesday by State Member for Penrith and NSW Sports Minster, Stuart Ayres; Minister for Hospitality, Gaming and Racing, Troy Grant; and Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler. The Jamison Park upgrade will see the NSW Government pump $934,901 or 50 per cent of funding required into the project through the ClubGRANTS scheme with Penrith City Council chipping in the other half. “This upgrade meets the needs of the growing population in the region and will encourage greater participation in grassroots sport and recreation,” Minister Troy Grant said. “The combined $1.86 million dollar project will ensure the families of the

to support growth of over 10 per cent in participation rates. Mr Ayres said the upgrade, which had been years in the making, will enhance an already well-utilised community asset. “Jamison Park is the beating heart of a healthy and active Penrith. It’s our most important and utilised sporting and community precinct. These upgrades will ensure even more locals have access to top class facilities,” he said. “Thousands of people use Jamo Park every week and this is an absolutely fantastic outcome for our community. I applaud Penrith Council for the quality of their application.” Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said thousands of locals, young and old, will benefit from the impending upgrades. “About 4,500 people including numerous clubs, schools and associations use the park each week,” he said. “We believe that the proposed works, including new equipment zones, floodlighting and enhanced amenity building, will boost those numbers even further.” Work on Jamison Park will begin in October with the project to be completed by June next year.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side have enjoyed mixed results in their double-header clash last weekend. On Saturday, the Panthers went down to the Bankstown Bruins 79-71 with Ben Kearins top-scoring for Penrith with 18 points. On Sunday, the Panthers shook off their loss from the night before to thrash Central Coast 90-70. Kearins was again best player on court scoring 20 points and 13 boards. Meanwhile, it was a fantastic weekend for Penrith’s women’s side after they defeated Bankstown 60-52 on Saturday then Manly 70-65 on Sunday. Both sides will take on Manly this Saturday on the Northern Beaches.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have continued their losing streak, going down to the Pennant Hills Demons 65-39 last Saturday afternoon. Michael Denton was again Penrith’s best scoring a team-high three goals. Meanwhile, the Penrith Ramettes have made it back to back wins after defeating the UTS Shamrocks in a low scoring affair 22-20 last weekend. This Sunday the Rams will battle the Balmain Tigers while the Ramettes will take on Randwick City.

ICE HOCKEY: The Penrith Phantoms had another huge win last weekend defeating the Norwest Emperors 6-2 while Penrith’s other Division 2 team, Phantom Menace, went down to the Canterbury Falcons 5-3.

This Sunday the Phantoms will take on the Canterbury Ice Cubes while the Menace will battle the Norwest Emperors. The Phantoms are currently leading the competition with the Menace in last place.

PADDLING: The third ICF canoe slalom World Cup in Prague wrapped up last weekend with Leonay’s Jessica Fox contesting the K1W event. Fox finished a disappointing fifth in the final behind German Ricarda Funk who won her maiden World Cup gold medal. Fox missed out on a medal by just 0.75 seconds with a two second penalty for a touch on gate 17 ending her chance of a second K1 medal of the series. “I had two costly mistakes that put me out of the medals. It is a solid result but I think there were really good parts to that run and unfortunately a penalty knocked me down the ranks,” Fox said of the challenging course. “I am learning from these and I am looking forward to racing in La Seu and then the World Championships.” The fourth ICF canoe slalom World Cup will be held in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain from August 1.

ictor Tuballa is about to endure the climb of his life. No, he’s not climbing Everest or another one of the world’s highest peaks, instead he’ll be taking on an epic 6,300 stair climb at two of Sydney’s most famous sporting stadiums. Next month, the 40-year-old Werrington Downs resident will run up and down the steps of each bay of the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and Allianz Stadium as part of Stadium Stomp. Stadium Stomp provides entrants with the one-off opportunity to take on the thousands of steps and raise money for a nominated charity at the same time. “I developed an interest in obstacle racing in the past few years, and one of my friends alerted me to Stadium Stomp and I thought I’d check it out,” Mr Tuballa said. The father of three and full-time naturopath has, over the last couple of years, been heavily involved in various forms of fitness and said he can’t wait to take on his next challenge. “I’ve never done a stair climb before except running up and down Knapsack Stairs,” he said.

Photo: Melinda Jane “At the moment I’m doing a lot of runs including hill runs around Sanctuary Drive in Leonay to get me ready.” Stair climbing can often cause severe leg burn and cramps, which can hit instantly. Mr Tuballa said he’ll be taking the right precautions heading into the event on July 27.
