COVER STORY

Musical miracle: The Angels clock up 40 years

T

here aren’t many bands that make it to 40 years, even fewer that make it despite the challenges of line-up changes and band reincarnations.

KATE REID @kate_reid6

I think there are flashes of brilliance throughout everything we’ve done

as the last two have, and they turn out so well, it’s an incredibly uplifting feeling.” And at this stage in their evolution, The Angels are very much a tight knit team, especially when it comes to the new material. “Everybody in this band has contributed from a song writing point of view,” Brewster said. “Dave Gleeson’s been with the band for three years, we love him, he’s a great guy, he’s a great singer and we discovered that he’s actually very creative. He didn’t write that much with the Screaming Jets, but we gave him some rhythm tracks and he came back a week later with five songs, four of which, I think, are on the album.” After being in a band for so long Brewster has witnessed many changes to the industry, some good – like the invent of social media to help musicians promote their work; and some not so good – like major changes to the live scene that have made things harder for up and coming acts. “As far as young bands putting their band together and trying to make it in this country these days I feel pretty distressed for them because, it’s never been easy, but you had the opportunities to expose what you do in my day, in the 70’s it was just incredible,” he said.

“I mean we opened up, we and others, opened up a whole scene that was just going through the roof. You could play gigs on a Monday night and put 1,500 people in the room.” The Angels sure have filled some rooms over the years and with their extensive touring history have earned a reputation as one of Australia’s hardest working bands. Their current 40th Anniversary tour will be on the road until mid August and Brewster admits he is happy to see that their audience is a diverse one. “We get a hell of a lot of young people coming to our shows so it’s not like we just play to our own age group,” he said. “It’s our repertoire, the songs that we wrote over the years, so many of them are still very major to the audiences, I don’t think they’ve dated, they still sound fresh. “I think that’s one great thing about rock n’ roll as a style of music. I think [with] rock n’ roll, if you write a great rock song it will last forever.” The Angels will be performing at Evan Theatre on Friday, July 25 at 8pm. Tickets are $41.50. But that’s exactly where The Angels are now; standing in the present, looking back on a career that hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but has resulted in some of the most well known Aussie songs of all time. After the recent death of original frontman Doc Neeson, guitarist and original member, John Brewster, is reflective on the role that Doc played within the music scene. “I’ll remember Doc as being one of the greatest frontmen that, in my opinion and many others, Australia’s ever known. He was just incredible, an incredible frontman,” he said. The current Angels line-up is a mix of original members and newer members including singer Dave Gleeson, of the Screaming Jets, who joined the band in 2011. In May this year The Angels started their 40th anniversary tour, and are celebrating the occasion with two new three-CD collections packed full of hits; ‘Volume 1 – 40 Greatest STUDIO Hits’ and ‘Volume 2 – 40 Greatest LIVE Hits’. “It celebrates everyone that’s ever played in the band. Everybody’s represented and that actually totals 13 people, believe it or not, over the years,” Brewster said. There has been a lot of talk in the press about the band and their relationships, but Brewster is keen to set the record straight, especially when it comes to Doc. “People say we’d been fighting, I don’t agree with that, we had differences of opinion, but that’s about it.” It would be easy after four decades in the industry for The Angels to rest on the success of their extensive back catalogue, including hits ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’ and ‘No Secrets’. Instead the band remains focused on creating new material. Their most recent album ‘Talk The Talk’, which was released earlier this year, is one that Brewster is particularly proud of. “To me it’s one of the greatest records we’ve ever made,” he said. “Not every album has turned out how we hoped it would and it’s a real let down. You get to the end of it and go ‘aww, ok, that one didn’t quite make it’. We’ve had that experience. “I can’t say that everything we’ve ever done is brilliant. I think there are flashes of brilliance throughout everything we’ve done in a way, but when you actually sit down and an album evolves so naturally

GET INVOLVED TODAY

VOLUNTEERS While growing up we are faced with numerous choices on the direction of our lives such as career options, education, marriage, religion and more. The moral and ethical landscape encompassing the decisions we make can seem like a minefield of good and bad choices. To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught? While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there. Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

“

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

”

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations. Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons. Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help. Primary Ethics needs volunteers to organise and run classes in local public schools and Penrith RSL is behind them. We are encouraging staff to volunteer and get the wider community involved. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.” To find out how to volunteer to be an Ethics Teacher or an Ethics Coordinator, head over to The Primary Ethics website

Hi-5 becomes Hi-6 as they introduce a new member

P

CHRIS CONNOLLY @connolly2204

Long standing member Lauren Brant has announced she will be leaving the group at the end of their current ‘Hi-5 House Hits’ tour and a new member Tanika Anderson will be joining them. “Tanika’s 19, the same age as when I started. It’s a good age to join. She’s been touring with us as the understudy. She’ll come on for the last song of the night and I’ll introduce her. It’ll be the first time we’ve had six on stage,” she said. Lauren has been with Hi-5 for five years and says she has enjoyed every single second but feels it’s time she did something different and it’s important to keep the cast young. “We see ourselves as the older brothers and sisters of the children in the audience and the audience grows with us.

HI-5 EVAN THEATRE JULY 3 The people who watched Hi-5 when I started five years ago aren’t watching us now,” she said. She would like to continue performing and hosting but hasn’t lined anything up yet. Her current passion

is her clothing label, loliboli, named after her nickname as a child. “I’m a bit of an entrepreneur and saw a gap in the market for dress-up clothes that are comfortable and safe and long-lasting,” Lauren said.

“I’ve started with replica Hi-5 costumes and designed the costumes for this tour.” She said her designs are based on children’s imaginations with lots of colours and flowers and bows. The highlight of her time in Hi-5 has been the charity work; being an ambassador for World Vision and for the Starlight Foundation. “It’s taught me so much about the world, visiting sick children in hospital and going to poverty stricken places,” Lauren said. “We went on World Vision trips to Cambodia and the Philippines to try to raise awareness of the poverty. They were quite successful. We got the government to give more money to the problem.” She said there are also individual children she’ll never forget such as a girl standing up near the front of the stage at one concert. “As soon as I made eye contact with her, she said ‘I love you’. It was really special,” she said. The ‘Hi-5 House Hits’ tour features all of their favourite, best-loved songs, chosen by the fans themselves. Hi-5 play the Evan Theatre at 10am and 12.30pm on Thursday, July 3. Tickets are $31.50. See www.livenation.com.au.

The much loved children’s picture book will be transformed into a magical musical at the Joan this July. Written by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler the story follows a little mouse who uses tall tales of a monster called ‘The Gruffalo’ to scare away predators on her travels through the deep dark woods. That is until she comes face to face with the supposedly mythical creature. This show will delight audiences from ages three onwards, with even the adults promised an entertaining experience. The Gruffalo will be on at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Monday July, 7 and Tuesday July, 8. Performances are at 10.30am and 12.30pm each day. Tickets are $18-$22. Call 4723 7600 or visit www.jspac.com.au.

F

t’s coming up to school holidays again and any parent will know that it’s not always easy to keep the kids occupied. Well never fear, this Winter holidays the Penrith Regional Gallery has you covered with a school holiday program that will keep the kids busy with plenty of art projects to bring a little fun and creativity into their time off. The workshops will be age appropriate as they are split into two groups; ages five to eightyears and nine to 12-years, with a special gallery tour for the three to six-year-olds. Starting on Tuesday, July 8 the little ones will have the chance to create their own colourful creatures, which they will then use to act out a story straight from their own imagination. For the nine to 12-year-olds there will be a painting workshop with Paula Garrard where kids will have the opportunity to learn about colour theory through their very own abstract artwork.

There’s finally some news on what Chelsea Handler’s doing next year, and it’s been confirmed that she is leaving E! for a new talk show on Netflix. Handler will wrap up ‘Chelsea, Lately’ in August before heading to the subscription internet channel for comedy specials and a new talk show.

Music TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Starring: Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz

SEETHER ISOLATE AND MEDICATE Out June 27

The much loved fan favourite ‘Transformers’ is back for another instalment, and this time Mark Wahlberg takes over from Shia LaBeouf as leading man. Wahlberg plays Cade Yeager, a single father, mechanic and inventor, who, along with his daughter Tessa, played by Nicola Peltz, discover the deactivated Optimus Prime. The movie ultimately leads to a battle between good and evil; the Autobots, led by Optimus Prime are struggling to protect Earth, with the help of the human cast. Stanley Tucci also stars in the movie as Joshua Joyce, a designer who heads a company that creates its own transfomers. ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ is set four years after Chicago was invaded. The human cast is brand new and the film will mark the first appearance of the Dinobots who will star alongside transformers including Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Brains and Ratchet. Of course it wouldn’t be a ‘Transformers’ film if action aficionado Michael Bay wasn’t directing. Joining Bay is the movie’s executive producer Steven Spielberg. The supporting cast includes Kelsey Grammer and Jack Reynor.

Most people would probably know Seether from the 2004 hit single ‘Broken’ which featured lead singer Shaun Morgan’s ex, the amazing Amy Lee from the mainstream metal band Evanescence. But Seether’s history is a lot more extensive than many casual music listeners might realise. The band is currently in the process of releasing their sixth studio album, ‘Isolate and Medicate’ which was produced by Brendan O’Brien, who has worked with the likes of Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen. Seether formed in Pretoria, South Africa in 1999 and it’s clear that they take inspiration from the 90’s grunge scene, attempting to emulate some of the genre’s most successful bands, like Nirvana and Alice in Chains. Listening to Seether’s first single from the album, ‘Words as Weapons’, is a pretty enjoyable experience. It’s not hugely heavy, or grungy for that matter, but it’s a very catchy, solid, rock track that gets better the more you listen to it. So far the word on the (digital) street seems to be pretty positive. Though it’s hard to judge a whole album from one song, if ‘Words and Weapons’ is anything to go by, it looks like this will be a pretty good album.

TRACKS RATED M

Starring: Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver ‘Tracks’ follows the story of Robyn Davidson who makes a solo trip walking from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, a total of 2,700km. Joined only by her faithful dog and four camels, Robyn’s journey is an amazing feat, even more so when you realise that the movie is based on a true story. On her journey Robyn, played by Mia Wasikowska, is met by National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan, played by Adam Driver. After her initial reluctance Robyn agrees to have Rick meet up with her at different points on her incredible journey, in exchange for the funding she needs to make the trip. During his visits Rick documents Mia’s struggles through the unforgiving Australian outback. Along the way the two start to forge a friendship. This movie proves what’s possible when you dare to live life your own way. Though it is full of physical and emotional obstacles it is ultimately a story of a strong woman, her incredible journey and the people she meets along the way.

Games GRID AUTOSPORT RATED G

PC, PS3, PS4 and XBOX360

After ‘Race Driver: GRID’ and ‘Grid 2’ comes ‘Grid Autosport’, the newest release in the series that puts motorsport enthusiasts into the driver’s seat, taking on the role of professional race driver in an attempt to be the best. On this release the developers have listened to gamer feedback, seeing the return of features such as authentic handling, in-car view and multiplayer racing. You’ll have the choice of different classes including Muscle Cars,

Prototypes, GT, Single-Seaters, Lightweights and Super-Modified, just to name a few. With 22 amazing locations and over 100 routes there is plenty to experience when you take your new car for a spin. Features include different racing styles, such as endurance competitions and drift competitions, along with the chance to form Racing Clubs with other players. eil McGuigan, the extraordinary driving force behind the McGuigan Wines label that’s been named International Winemaker of the Year for a record three times (2009, 2011 and 2012) has now come up with another reward for wine aficionados. It’s a Claret-style red that he’s been quietly working on with his Hunter Valley winemaking team for an amazing 10 years. Labelled The Philosophy, this 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz blend of super-premium fruit from South Australia’s Eden and Clare Valleys, fulfils a decadelong challenge both to himself and his team: to create an icon wine that goes beyond anything else, and recognising not the makers, but the wine as the hero. “I named it after my own philosophy: that every day you need the ambition to craft a super-premium wine, spreading that focus through every step of your winemaking process, so your $10 wine starts tasting like a $12 wine, the $12 like a $15 and so on to every wine from your lower price levels, to your very best super-premiums.” The 2010 Philosophy is a wine strong on blueberry fruits without being overly sweet fruited, fine tannins and an incredibly long palate. It’s well rewarding the $150 asking price. One to note: Choosing a wine to go with spicier dishes or Asian-influences, can often prove somewhat of a challenge. But one that takes on such challenges well is Gewurztraminer – and Rymill’s just released 2013 Coonawarra gt does just that trick. At $21.50 it’s a top drop to enjoy now.

PROFILE: STELLAR ADDICTION FROM WESTERN SYDNEY

Invitation to Spain t’s certainly not easy for bands to get noticed these days, so when someone from the other side of the world wants to bring you to Spain to perform it’s got to be more than a little exciting. For two of the five members of local band Stellar Addiction – Stacey Abdilla, lead singer, and Tanya Carboni, drummer – this was exactly the position they found themselves in when they were recently asked to play as an acoustic duo at the Ella International Lesbian Festival in Mallorca, Spain. “It took a while to realise it was actually real and we were doing it. The whole thing is pretty surreal, I’m pretty stoked I get to share it with my best mate. We are literally counting down the days,” Carboni said. The girls are the only Australian live act to be included in the lineup. It’s no wonder really, with Abdilla’s commanding vocals backed by Carboni on acoustic guitar and stomp pedal, the two have a captivating live presence. Stellar Addiction take inspiration for their rock/punk/pop sound from acts like Paramore, P!NK and No Doubt. The band’s first single, ‘Second on Your Mind’ has reached over 33,000 views on YouTube and the video for their second single ‘The Promise’ was released on June 23.

AROUND THE WORLD

After 66 years on the seas, the Coongoola is still an impressive vessel, much like its former engineer. These days, you can enjoy its hospitality at the lovely city of Port Vila in Vanuatu

DAVID ELLIS

O

Decades on, Coongoola still makes a spectacular sight today sailing to picturesque Hapi Tok Beach outside Vanuatu’s Port Vila. Photo: South Pacific Cruise and Dive mum came from the one of Australia’s great pioneering grazing families, the Bardens, who in the late 1800’s owned vast tracts of now suburbia, but then cattle country stretching from Tempe near what

was to become Sydney’s Mascot Airport, to the now suburb of (appropriately) Barden Ridge 30km south. They later moved to Toowoomba where Doug was born in 1926, winning himself an engineering cadetship with GH Griffiths and going on to later spearhead new design Southern Cross diesel motors and windmills. Their 30,000km trip to Africa was by way of Darwin, Timor, Bali, Jakarta, Singapore, Penang, Colombo, the Maldives, Seychelles, Mombasa, Zanzibar and Durban. Then on the way back via Mauritius, Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney to Brisbane. Later Doug also sailed a round-world voyage with the Griffiths, keeping Coongoola ticking over as engineer and radio officer. And on that 15-month trip (1952-1954) he re-united in London with a past girlfriend, Shirley. He then married her in Australia in 1954 and the two shared their lives for the next 59 years, including having three sons, Richard, Stephen and Geoffrey. Doug proved an indispensable right-

hand man to GH, both on Coongoola which GH finally sold in the late 1950s, in his foundry, and later as General Manager of GH’s other venture, ClayWare Bricks – overseeing production, he reckoned, of 130 million bricks before retiring in 1986. And to the end in September last year, he recalled fondest memories of his almost Boys’ Own adventures aboard Coongoola… including on the way to Southern Africa nearly being rolled over in a cyclone off Mozambique, and on their way home tossed from wave-top to wave-top by another. Doug died in his sleep aged 87 – no doubt happy in his mind that his beloved Coongoola continues to sail on today in Vanuatu. He is survived by Shirley, their three sons and a granddaughter, Skie. A day on Coongoola costs around $120 including hotel pick-up/return, activities, snorkelling equipment, lunch and morning and afternoon teas. Visit secluded coves and beaches of fine white coral sand. Snorkel or dive in crystal clear warm water. Feed tame fish, maybe see dolphins at play. Visit www.southpacdivecruise.com.vu.

ne of the more popular outings on a visit to Vanuatu’s Port Vila is a day on, and in, the briny with the historic 23m ketch Coongoola. Just imagine revelling in sun, sand, coral reef snorkelling, fish feeding, a visit to a turtle hatchery and a cracker-jack barbecue on a beach in the historic harbour where the Americans readied themselves for 1942’s Battle of the Coral Sea. That day at Hapi Tok Beach (local pidgin for ‘Happy Talk’ as in the musical South Pacific,) long evokes grand memories for the thousands who’ve sailed, sunned and played there over the years. And not the least of those memories is the food: morning tea with French buns and homemade cumquat marmalade on the way out from Coongoola’s mooring (40 minutes by private mini-bus from Vila), fresh tropical fruit platters for afternoon tea on the way back, and a mountainous beach barbecue in between with prime tender steaks, kumala (sweet potato) curry, local garden produce side dishes, and crunchy French-style mini-baguettes. Trés bien! There’s also an over-sized ice-box with enough beer and soft drinks to keep the most enthusiastically thirsty traveller well slaked under a tropic sun, with an honesty box for payment. We’ve indulged many a happy outing ourselves on Coongoola over the years, and were saddened to learn just recently of the death last September of one of the ketch’s original crew, a legendary character who helped put she and Australia on the world sailing map some 66 years ago. Coongoola had been built in 1948 for a Queensland businessman, G.H. (Bert) Griffiths who owned Toowoomba’s Southern Cross Foundry. The foundry was famous across rural Australia for its diesel engines and windmill-driven water-pumps. And sensing potentially lucrative markets in Southern Africa, GH (as he was best known) had had Coongoola built to take examples of his products across there to test those markets. On September 24, 1949 Coongoola set sail from Brisbane with GH, his wife, their two teenage children, a professional skipper, and amongst the crew a young engineer from his foundry. That engineer was Doug Owens, who stayed with GH’s company for the remaining near 40 years of his working life, and passed away on September 24 last year – extraordinarily 64 years to the very day after setting out from Brisbane on that historic Coongoola maiden voyage. Doug’s dad was a Tasmanian and his

men in some cases – is similar to a G-string except that it is missing the straps or the fabric that stretches over a person’s hips. From the images I have seen it seems to be rigid, which means that when you lay it on its side, it forms a ‘C’ shape, hence the name. Again, I am not encouraging you to find out more but if you are curious, Google Images has plenty of designs for you to look at. Neither garment shows more ‘privateparts’ than a G-string but they sure show more skin and because of their ‘individuality’ are tipped to become popular items in the lingerie section. Though the C-string has been around for some time, I haven’t ever seen one in the flesh – naturally this has made me question its likelihood to become popular – which apparently is unusual, given it is advertised as perfect for tanning at the beach because it leaves next to no tan lines and that it is the next best thing (other than going pantyless) if you hate panty lines. Sure, it can be argued these items may have some practical uses – and aesthetic uses – but how on earth can either of these garments be comfortable? Sure, sacrifice the comfort of your feet for a super hot pair of heels but your netherregions? I just don’t get it. There are some fashions that I just don’t think will ever gain traction and this latest underwear trend is certainly one of those. Email me your thoughts!

Skin revealing underwear is tipped to be the new hot trend

This week I have been exposed to a number of underwear and swimwear styles that I had never thought I would ever see, not did I ever want to. These garments are the kinds of things that even those people with the most perverted imaginations would never think up so, I am asking the people that did: what on earth? The ‘C-string’ for women and the ‘String Latéral Flash’ for men are enough to make even the most liberalistic person blush – they make the common G-string look... well, G-rated. It was an encounter with the String Latéral Flash, a special garment designed for men, earlier this week that first sparked my desire to write this column. I was trawling the internet, where most of my surprise encounters with inappropriate outfits occur, when I came across a couple of images of reality TV stars from the show ‘The Only Way is Essex’. At first glance I was confused, wondering why it was such a big deal that these men were wearing swimwear with nude-coloured panelling, when I realised that what I had perceived as nude fabric was actually skin. From the front, the ‘String Latéral Flash’ looks like half a G-string, one that only has fabric covering half a hip, and from the back, all you can see is a string of fabric, no wider than a thumb, stretching diagonally across one buttock. If my description isn’t good enough, try image searching the garment on the internet, but don’t say I didn’t warn you – although you can’t see everything, there isn’t much (anything) left to the imagination. The swimwear/underwear/hardly-wear-at-all is designed by French brand Alter, which also makes garments akin to the ‘mankini’ made famous by the film ‘Borat’. I tried to put the images out of my mind, succeeding for only a couple of days before I was sent an image of the C-string by a colleague, who knew I’d be looking for some inspiration for my weekly column. The C-string, made for women – although it has been altered for

Pink diamonds are often called a fluke of nature as their cause is unknown

WW6547

Naturally coloured or treated diamonds? Recently I’ve had quite a few people asking me about pink diamonds. They seem to be a hot topic of late! What are they? How are they formed? Why are they so ‘expensive’? What is the difference between natural pink diamonds and high pressure high temperature treatment (HPHT) diamonds? And the list goes on! The Argyle Diamond mine in Western Australia is the largest producer of pink diamonds in the world. They are often called a ‘fluke of nature’ as the reason for the colour is still undefined. Only one tenth of one per cent of the diamonds mined at this mine are pink so a whole year’s worth of pink diamond production would comfortably fit in the palm of your hand. Colours such as blue and purple are even more few and far between, which gives you an idea of the rarity of these stones! It’s been said that there is only up to 10 years left in the Argyle diamond mine, at which time the value will be driven even higher. HPHT stands for High Pressure High Temperature. This is a process used to treat white or brown diamonds (or undesirable colours) to change it to a more sought after colour including pink. It’s a permanent process that takes only a few days versus millions of years. So, the difference here is naturally occurring colour in a diamond as opposed to an enhanced colour. It’s very hard to tell the difference with the end product, even for a gemmologist like myself, as the process has been near perfected. HPHT diamonds are definitely a more cost effective version if you simply want an item of jewellery with a coloured diamond that won’t break the bank, however many people choose to invest in coloured diamonds – specifically pink – due to their rarity and the short lifespan of the mine. Or they choose coloured diamonds to commemorate a special moment in their life. In my opinion it all comes down to personal preference and what you are comfortable with. Many people would be very happy with a stone that has had some enhancements. However if you prefer to own something that is truly unique and rare, then a natural coloured diamond is the way to go. Either way they both look stunning!

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Be very clear in the way you explain things to a child, teenager or friend early in the week. Otherwise you are likely to get your wires crossed and your meaning will be scrambled. Adventurous Aquarians – don’t stay cooped up inside this weekend! The Moon and Mars activate your restless gene so it’s time to travel, exercise and play.

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Creative inspiration is high, but don’t get so carried away that you delude yourself and head into the realm of pure fantasy. With Venus and Mercury moving through your domestic zone, strive to make family relations as pleasant as possible. As the Dalai Lama says, “A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation of your life.”

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Are you annoyed that people aren’t behaving the way you want them to? Expect loved ones to be demanding and colleagues, clients or customers to be more defensive than usual. Cool compromise is the key. When it comes to joint finances, the more disciplined and focused you are, the more successful you’ll be. Don’t expect instant results – slow and steady wins the money race.

JOANNE MADELINE MOORE

Lions can be a selfish lot, as you become self-absorbed with your ambitions, dreams and daily dramas. But, with the Sun and Jupiter both jumping through your humanitarian zone, it’s time to finally roll up your sleeves and help those around you. Be inspired by Princess Diana: “Everyone has the potential to give something back.”

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Neptune confuses issues early in the week so be careful you’re not viewing situations and people through ridiculously rosecoloured glasses. Attached Librans, when it comes to a major goal, make sure you and your partner are on the same page. Singles, can you differentiate a dream date from a disappointing dud? Saturday is super for socialising in beautiful surroundings.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

This week Pluto gives you an energy surge that increases your desire to be in charge. But, if you want to avoid power struggles and unpleasant dramas (especially on Friday) then stop trying to control others. And avoid the temptation to stew on grievances. If you’ve got a problem, don’t bottle it up inside, have the courage to speak up.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Hey Gemini – thank goodness Mercury (your ruling planet) goes direct on Tuesday so communication, conversation, business, education and travel should all start to improve. If you take the time to communicate clearly with family and friends, you’ll reap the rewards. Money matters and joint finances look complicated so be careful.

Active Archers to the rescue! Positive aspects increase your generosity, plus your desire to help those around you. But, before you jump in, just make sure others require your assistance. If you are reckless with a close relationship this week, you could find yourself with a fractious friend – or livid lover – on your hands.

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

A creative project finally takes off, as Mercury moves forwards and your imagination soars. Friday’s Sun/Pluto opposition exacerbates an existing problem in a relationship. Try not to take things too personally – the more defensive you are, the more difficult the day will be. Expect domestic dramas on the weekend.

AUTO REPAIRS

Your perfectionist side is likely to go into overdrive this week, as Pluto amps up your obsession with perfection. The more you slip into Capricorn control-freak mode, the more problems you’ll encounter with others (and you certainly won’t win any popularity polls). Calm, considered compromise is the smart way to go.

Avoid being a gullible Bull early in the week, when someone may try to pull the wool over your eyes. Stay alert. Life insurance is a must have if you are the bread winner in the family

Is your family properly insured? While most Australians understand the importance of financially protecting themselves, their families and any assets they may own, many households are failing to take on the levels of insurance needed to effectively recover from loss. Underinsurance – the issue of not taking out enough cover – is a problem affecting a number of Australian families. As storms, floods and fires sweep across the country, stories emerge of underinsured families struggling to repair and replace their homes, contents and cars. There are many reasons why individuals and families might choose not to take out a policy, including cost or misinformed opinions on its importance. If you’ve been wondering what policies you need and which you can forego, here are the three most important types of cover. Home and contents insurance Your home is arguably the biggest financial investment you will ever make, and most people can only afford to make this purchase once in a lifetime. It is therefore vital that you hold some form of home and contents insurance to protect not just your property, but also your belongings from fire, flood, burglary or any other form of man-made or natural disaster. Even when renting from a landlord, you should consider contents insurance. Car cover If you own or drive a vehicle, you should take out comprehensive car insurance to not only cover your own set of wheels but to protect you from the liability of third party damage. When involved in an accident, any personal injury or property damage caused by you or your car could result in you being liable for the cost of repair and recovery. Comprehensive car cover will ensure your personal finances are protected from this cost. Life insurance If you are the main breadwinner in your household, consider how much your family may struggle if you were to pass away. Life insurance is a crucial factor in ensuring your family can continue to pay bills, particularly if coping with existing debts and funeral costs. Most people do not consider purchasing life insurance until close to retirement age.

Biggest health/fitness misconception? Exercise programmes give you results. The best programme is the one you do. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? I get lots of benefits that are equally of high importance but the biggest benefit for me is allowing me to live the life I want. What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I enjoy playing a bit of golf but I have to say my favourite exercise at the moment has to be chin-ups. It never gets any easier. How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? You may have seen some publicity about women being told not to breastfeed in public. It’s crazy when what has been natural for millions of years can suddenly somehow find itself ‘Unfashionable’. Just like our food choices or activity levels, we are doing things a lot differently than our ancestors and the results are often turning out to be detrimental. Take something as natural as childbirth. A series of papers recently released in The Lancet Journal have shown that women’s health is being increasingly threatened by the ‘overmedicalisation’ of pregnancy in both poorer parts of the world and high-income countries such as Australia. Routine use of unnecessary interventions including Caesarean section, cutting to facilitate childbirth and restrictions on movement during labour can have lasting effects on both mothers and babies. One professor from Australia’s University of Technology, Sydney, said: “Both under-use and over-use of medical interventions in pregnancy contribute to short and long-term illness for an estimated 20 million child-bearing women”. “In high-income countries, midwife-led units were better at generating natural births and lower levels of hormone treatment, assisted birth, Caesarean birth and vaginal cutting than conventional labour wards.” Independent midwife care also appeared to have important benefits, one Danish study says, including reduced maternal ill-health and an increased likelihood of spontaneous natural birth. Each year, 139 million births are estimated to take place around the world, and with almost 300,000 women dying during pregnancy, the experts say. They estimated that if midwifery coverage increased by just a quarter, the rate of maternal deaths could be halved by 2030. Importantly the authors have examined what women and babies need: “[There is] the need to treat women with respect, to acknowledge their own preferences around childbirth and to ensure they have high quality information”. Just like so many other parts of our lives everybody should take an interest, get informed and make their own decisions on what actually is the healthiest choice.

to grow. People have so much to offer if you take the time to listen. And you might just make a couple of life-long friends in the process too.

How does fitness feature in your life? I have been in the fitness industry for over 10 years now. I started in 1999 as a part time receptionist in a gym while I was doing my first year in Exercise Science. I realised that I wanted to get into the fitness industry faster and the degree wasn’t the format for me so I went and completed my gym instructor and PT certificates whilst doing a lot of non-gym related jobs. I landed my first full time gym job in 2001 as a fitness instructor in a small, rural gym writing up programmes for weight loss or strength. After three years of that I moved to London to do the ‘travel thing’ and started working as a franchised personal trainer for three years, which funded the majority of my travel and more. I came to Australia in 2007, became a franchised personal trainer with Fitness First in King Street, Sydney CBD and in 2013 I became the Personal Training Manager at Penrith Fitness First.

How to keep your ferret healthy and well fed

Don’t know why you have an inhaler?

Last week we discussed the environments that ferrets are best suited to and whether a ferret is the right pet for your family. This week we will discuss general care and feeding for ferrets. Well looked after ferrets can live for five to nine years and a good diet is essential to the health of any pet. Ferrets are strict carnivores and in the wild they prey upon and eat whole animals. They require a diet of animal products that are high in protein and fat and low in carbohydrates and fibre. There are good quality ferret commercial dry foods available but they are difficult to access in Australia. A good alternative is to offer a constant supply of a high quality kitten dry food such as Hills Science Diet Kitten Food. Offering ferrets raw meaty bones weekly will also provide them with good nutrition as well as keeping their teeth nice and clean. Treats such as fruits and vegetables can be offered but only in very small quantities. Clean, fresh water should be freely available. Nutritional supplements are generally not required in ferrets. It is very important that young ferrets are introduced to a good quality commercial food from a young age. Ferrets should also be exposed to a variety of foods as early as possible so they learn to accept different types of food. Young ferrets that are fed on just a raw meat diet will often develop rickets, which is malformation of their bones due to low calcium in their diet. This disease can cause bent bones that may result in life long joint problems. All ferrets should have an annual health check and be vaccinated against canine distemper virus; this deadly virus is easily preventable. Ferrets should be on heartworm prevention – topical revolution monthly will prevent mites, fleas and heartworm and is a good all-in-one preventative. Revolution is not registered for use in ferrets but research suggests that it is effective and we have used it safely for many years. Desexing is recommended for males but essential for females. Ferrets that are not going to be used for breeding must be desexed around six months of age and before their first heat. If you have any questions, please contact Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic.

With the colds and flu this winter, we are seeing customers prescribed sprays that are used for asthma. These people have never been diagnosed before with asthma, so they are a little confused. They will be experiencing breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness and possibly a dry cough, especially at night or early in the morning. In asthma a number of things happen. The muscles around the airways tighten. Also, the lining inside the airways become swollen and extra mucus is secreted. These reactions can be triggered by a cold or flu. Other triggers in people who experience asthma more often include: • Inhaled allergen such as house dust mites, pollens, moulds and animal hair • Cigarette smoke • Cold air or a drop in air temperature • Exercise • Certain medicines, e.g. aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, blood pressure tablets called beta blockers, some eye drops for glaucoma and Echinacea • Air pollutants such as dust and smoke • Strong smells and fumes including paints, perfumes, cleaning agents and chemicals • Stress and anxiety • Some foods and preservatives, flavourings and colouring • Gastric reflux or heartburn The relief from asthma symptoms is achieved by using an inhaler. There are a number of different coloured inhalers. These colours correspond to how they work. The most commonly seen inhaler is a blue one. It is used to relieve the symptoms of asthma. If the condition is ongoing, it is important that a preventer is used to keep the asthma controlled. When used regularly, symptoms of asthma are greatly reduced and so is your use of the reliever spray.

A revolutionary discovery What a surprise to discover your belief about something you’ve thought true is wrong. It can shake you to your core. Back in the 1500’s people believed the Earth was the centre of the solar system. We can see why. They woke in the morning to see the sun travel from one side of the sky to the other. At night they’d watch the stars and moon move across the sky. It would’ve been easy to assume the earth was the centre and everything moved around it, until one day a man named Nicholas Copernicus came along. Copernicus, based on careful research, made a stunning discovery, a discovery so revolutionary that today we sometimes use the expression “Copernican Revolution” to describe similar monumental change and discoveries. Copernicus discovered the earth was not the centre of the solar system, but in fact it was the sun! Whereas previously people thought everything revolved around the Earth, Copernicus discovered that despite how things appeared, everything revolved around the sun. Christians are people who’ve discovered that despite how things appear, they are not the centre of their universe or even the centre of their life, but in fact, the Son, Jesus is the centre of all things. The Bible says, “In these last days God has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” Putting your hope in Jesus is better than anything you could imagine! Discover the difference that knowing and trusting him can make to your life – it is revolutionary!

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

Cuts reversed NSW Government promises to ensure pensioner concessions are not removed or reduced fter the Federal Government announced in May this year that it would stop subsidising pensioner concessions from July 1, the State Government has dug deep in its

own pockets to cover the lost funding. In a move to protect NSW pensioners and seniors, the 2014-15 NSW Budget includes an additional $107 million to continue the concessions. Minister for Ageing John Ajaka said the

NSW Government had committed one year’s worth of additional funding to ensure the state’s pensioners and seniors would not bear the brunt of harsh cuts to concessions while representations were made to the Federal Government to reinstate the funding. “A National Partnership agreement was axed without consultation in the Federal Budget, resulting in $450 million over four years being withdrawn for pensioner and senior concessions from July 1 this year,” Mr Ajaka said. “To deliver such a budget shock to so many valued citizens in our community was tragic. The people who were going to be affected were some of our most vulnerable and that was unacceptable. “Pensioners can now rest assured that they will maintain their concessions including reduced costs of travel on public transport, motor vehicle registration, land rates, energy bills and water.” Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said the pensioner concession cuts made by the Federal Government had caused quite a stir in Penrith. “This was an issue that quite a few residents made representations to my office on,” he said. “When Treasurer Joe Hockey announced the cuts a panic went through the community. But we have found the money to cover the cuts so that there will be no changes to the pensioner concessions.”

This weekend is the last chance carers will have the opportunity to share their challenges, strengths and needs with Carers NSW, through their 2014 Carer Survey. Monday, June 30, is the last day carers can complete the survey, which will help the organisation to advocate for carers across the state. “The purpose of this research is to identify and highlight carers’ strengths and the challenges they face in caring for a family member or friend,” said Carers NSW CEO Elena Katrakis. “To inform our actions, we must identify the areas of greatest need amongst carers across New South Wales and the particular needs of the different carer groups. For example this could be different geographic locations or care recipient conditions.” There are approximately 850,000 known carers in NSW alone. To complete the anonymous survey, which is being conducted by Carers NSW in collaboration with researchers from the University of Wollongong, UNSW Australia, Macquarie University, University of Sydney and University of Western Sydney, visit www.carersnsw. org.au.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) last week revealed that Australians lost $89 million to scams last year. The Commission released their annual Targeting Scams Report, which detailed the incidence of scams reported throughout 2013 and also rated the types of scams Australians saw. “The fifth annual scams report highlights that relationship scams cause the most significant emotional and economic harm to victims,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said. “These scammers invest considerable time and effort deceiving you into a fake romance, a fraudulent business partnership or a complex investment scheme. Their ultimate aim is to build your trust so they can steal your personal details and money.” Over $25 million was recorded lost as a result of dating and romance scams in Australia last year. “Sadly, 43 per cent of people who reported being approached by a scam admirer also lost money, a decrease from previous years but nevertheless a high strike rate for scammers,” Ms Rickard said. “People should be particularly vigilant in asking themselves who they are really dealing with.”

Organiser, Kim Vlotman, said the ladies are very proud to have been so successful in such a short period of time. “Everyone has been really keen to help out; we have had many donations from the public, our staff have been knitting away, and we even had one client who had been through surgery getting involved,” she said. “We are now going to donate the scarves to West Care and the Vinnies Van, both of whom can pass on the garments to those who need them.” Of all colours and sizes, the scarves are a warming reminder though that not every-

Wendy Healey FOR AN incredible 17 years Wendy Healey has shown up to her job in Queen Street, St Marys because she simply loves it. Ms Healey is the manager of the Anglicare Op Shop and she enjoys coming in five, sometimes six days a week to manage the volunteers and get in touch with the community. “I’ve always enjoyed my role. I manage our 10 volunteers and we also work closely with Nova up the road,” she said. “Every Friday disabled kids from Nova stop by to help out. They tag items, clean up, and many of them have ended up with paid positions after working here – that’s really rewarding.” Ms Healey hopes to continue working at Anglicare for as long as possible because the place is “like family” to her.
