Westfield plans upgrade Proposal to bring new dining and entertainment precinct to shopping centre ALENA HIGGINS

A

major development application (DA) has been lodged to convert the south- west portion of Westfield Penrith into a new three-storey food and beverage building featuring a licenced balcony and rooftop terrace.

The $10.5 million DA, lodged last Friday, seeks Penrith City Council’s approval to turn the High Street end of the shopping centre and adjoining Council- owned public square into a dining and lifestyle quarter known as the ‘Mondo Dining Precinct’.

Spanning 2,536sqm, the new development will sit in the existing section of the mall that provides connection from High Street to key civic buildings, including the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith City Council, City Library and Civic Centre to the north-west.

Included in the scope of works is a multi-storey detached food and beverage building, with licenced balcony and accessible rooftop located south of the car park, as well as a health and wellness precinct, medical hub on the first floor, and landscaped area.

“As part of our community-led approach to design and planning, we have consulted

“They told us they wanted to see new and vibrant dining and leisure experiences at

the centre. So, whether that’s entertaining the kids or meeting friends and family for a meal, we know our customers want to enjoy more of these activities at Westfield Penrith.”

The original Penrith Plaza had been a

fixture of Penrith since the early 1970s. It first underwent a major re- development in 1990 and most recently unveiled a new food court, outdoor dining precinct and 100 new retailers in late 2005 as part of a $138 million expansion.

Councillor Karen McKeown requested Council investigate the cost to fence the park during last month’s Council meeting, saying it would be “a shame” to see it underutilised due to safety fears.

“It is a community area for families and the like, and if people are afraid of using it, it’s defeating its purpose,” she said.

crucial element missing from Penrith’s new-look Triangle Park may be installed, with Council saying a fence would be “beneficial” following a recent review.

It comes amid a push for Council to protect visitors exposed to heavy traffic along Henry Street, which backs onto the park.

Council recently completed a $3 million upgrade of the green space, located on the corner of High and Henry streets, but did not construct a fence.

A Council spokesman told the Weekender it had re-assessed the issue.

“Garden beds were planted to provide a natural barrier for the park, due to the maturity of these, a recent review demonstrated that a fence would be beneficial for the park,” he said.

GymbaROO Sydney West franchisee Kim Hall said the fact there is no barrier between the park and the main road was a “major contributor” as to why they don’t use the facility.

“It’s quite dangerous, to be honest,” said Ms Hall, whose centre is located in a building that overlooks the park.

“We have up to 100 kids coming and going from our centre each day, so that’s a lot of children in the area. A fence would encourage more families to use the park.”

Panthers’ character to be tested T he long, hot summer is finally over.

Netflix can go into hibernation, the beer fridge can be re-filled and the cricket can become an afterthought.

The NRL season is back, and on Sunday the long road towards September (and hopefully October) begins for the Penrith Panthers when they take on arch rivals Parramatta at Panthers Stadium.

When the clock starts to count down at 4.05pm on Sunday, Penrith will be able to let their football do the talking after a highly publicised, unfortunate end to the off-season.

The Panthers have spent a lot of time in recent years building a strong culture, and General Manager Phil Gould, CEO Brian Fletcher and Chairman Dave O’Neill thought the playing group had bought in to what they were selling.

The recent revelations that have been dissected extensively throughout the media have disappointed club officials, sponsors, partners and of course fans.

There is a feeling that the playing group now owes something to everyone who has an investment in Penrith.

This squad, despite the cloud that still hovers over it somewhat ahead of Sunday’s game, must repay the faithful.

Without question the events of the past few weeks offers the players an opportunity to show how strong their character is. They must overcome the drama and push the wide- open premiership window even higher.

The importance of experienced players like James Maloney, James Tamou, Tim Grant and Josh Mansour cannot be understated this season, especially given what’s happened in recent weeks.

riencing the perils of the rugby league media cycle for the first time, and the guidance of those who have seen it all before will be critical.

It would be foolish to suggest, and I most certainly am not, that what’s happened off the field can be easily brushed away by good performances on it. There is still very serious consequences to play out, and many questions to be answered. But with the season now underway, it will be important for coach Ivan Cleary to try to separate the issues the club is dealing with from the training and game day environments.

Rugby league is so often a game of redemption, and while there’s no suggestion that any of the players taking the field on Sunday are searching for it, there would surely be an atmosphere of regret, concern and embarrassment around the footy club at the moment. Sunday is a chance for some course correction.

There is a lot to be excited about at the Panthers this season.

Whether it’s the return of Dylan Edwards, the continuing story of superstar Nathan Cleary, the breakout season waiting to happen for Viliame Kikau or the excitement of seeing Josh Mansour and Dallin Watene- Zelezniak back to their best, the storylines are endless.

And of course, there’s a bloke called Ivan with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Not that his poker face will show it.

After his controversial and much talked about switch from the Wests Tigers back to Penrith, Cleary must now deliver.

His man management will be key this season, especially with the added distractions of recent weeks.

To be honest I’ve been unsure how to answer the inevitable question of “how will Penrith go this year?”.

I’m concerned that the side will miss the experience of Trent Merrin, and the impact of Tyrone Peachey.

I’m worried about injuries, which have proved a curse for the club in recent seasons.

And there’s still a big question mark over the appointment of Ivan Cleary, which I truly hope is a gamble that pays off come season’s end.

We’ll know a little more come 6pm Sunday, when the battle of the west is run and won.

Premierships are not won in March or April, however, and hopefully Penrith fans have learned in recent years that patience is a virtue.

We’ll all head to Panthers Stadium a little bruised on Sunday. Let’s hope we walk out with plenty of pride.

Petition to improve pedestrian safety fails to get result ALENA HIGGINS

C

rossing a busy intersection can be challenging at the best of times, but it can be down right dangerous if you’re blind and hearing impaired.

This is the situation Betty Murray finds herself in time and time again while trying to cross the intersection at the corner of Chapel and Crana streets, St Marys.

Despite a petition to fix the crossing garnering almost 1,000 signatures, Penrith City Council has knocked back a request for a zebra crossing or the implementation of measures to increase driver awareness at the intersection, saying “the RMS criteria was not met to warrant any changes”.

Currently, the crossing on Chapel Street is a speed hump with no stripes or signage.

Council’s response back to Councillor Robin Cook, who first raised the issue in October last year, was that it considered the “40km per hour speed limit, the contrasting pavement on Chapel Street, the narrowed road way on Crana Street and the pedestrian refuge medium on King Street provided adequate driver awareness and pedestrian safety”.

But Cr Cook disagrees with the findings and is keeping the pressure on.

“It shouldn’t be up to Mrs Murray, we should be providing a safe pathway.”

Mrs Murray called on Council to address the problem following a near death experience, with Cr Cook and Londonderry MP Prue Car helping lead the charge.

With St Marys experiencing a development boom and North St Marys housing an older demographic, Cr Cook said it was important Council be “proactive not reactive” in providing safe pathways for all abilities.

“If we disadvantage one person in the community then we are not doing our job,” she said.

Lighting set to be improved Memory Park, Woodriff Lane and Station Street, from the train station to Panthers Stadium, have been earmarked for more pedestrian lighting.

The spaces were identified for additional lighting after they were found to fall below standards.

Penrith City Council recently undertook a pedestrian lighting audit encompassing Penrith’s city centre footpaths, peripheral residential streets and places where people may expect to congregate or travel through, in and around the CBD, such as parks, car parks and plazas.

The heavily - used public pathway stretching from Woodriff Street to Union Lane through Judges Park has also been highlighted for additional lighting, as has the pedestrian route west of Peach Tree Creek.

The lighting audit revealed lighting standards were lower on footpaths along the periphery residential streets with minimum standards observed.

Opportunity for creative lighting, which is used as an overlay to functional lighting to make public spaces attractive, has also been suggested for the western facade of the Joan Performing Arts Centre and other key spaces.

Councillors rubber stamped the draft Pedestrian Lighting Strategy during Monday night’s Policy Review Committee Meeting. The upgrades are proposed to take place this financial year and next.

Stain on our community Federal Government confirms more funding to tackle domestic violence NICOLA BARTON

T

he Federal Government will invest $328 million in prevention and frontline domestic violence services.

The announcement comes soon after State Opposition Leader Michael Daley’s commitment of $158 million for crisis accommodation.

Penrith has been tainted as one of the worst domestic violence ‘hot spots’ in the state, with damning statistics.

Liberal Candidate for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh welcomed the announcement and said it was a huge win for the Penrith community.

“Having worked in the social housing sector, I know how important frontline and outreach services are,” she said.

“This announcement includes $82 million for frontline services, $68 million for prevention strategies, $35 million in support and prevention measures for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, $78 million to provide safe places for people impacted by domestic and family violence and $62 million to support 1800RESPECT.” The investment is part of the Federal Government’s ‘National Plan to Reduce

Violence Against Women and their Children 2010-2022’. Ms McIntosh said the Morrison Government will develop Australia’s first national prevention strategy and will work to change the attitudes and beliefs that can lead to violence.

“Our Government has zero tolerance for violence against women and children.

This announcement brings Commonwealth investment in this space since 2013 to over $840 million, this is something I am incredibly proud of,” she said.

“To stop violence against women, we need to counter the culture of disrespect towards women. That’s why our Government is investing so heavily in prevention.”

Ms McIntosh met with CEO of the Penrith Women’s Health Centre Jane Gold to discuss the funding.

“They do incredible work for so many vulnerable women and children in our community,” Ms McIntosh said.

“Federal funding on this scale will help many such centres which are invaluable in supporting victims of domestic violence.”

In 2018, 1234 domestic violence cases were reported in the Penrith region, but it is likely many more cases went unreported. Ms McIntosh said this funding will be a step in the right direction towards eradicating domestic violence.

Female-only martial arts classes help empower women with confidence NATHAN TAYLOR

F

ollowing a spate of domestic violence tragedies, women are being encouraged to take up martial arts more than ever.

Located at the Shaolin Martial Arts Centre in Werrington, Budo Ryu Karate Academy is currently holding ladies- only martial arts classes once a week.

Senior Chief Instructor Cheryl LynchGardner, who runs the classes solo, said she’s very passionate about empowering girls and women in the area.

“It’s a wild world out there and women need to learn to be confident and not be afraid to go places and do things,” she told the Weekender.

“If you are travelling on public transport, it’s a nightmare for some women. I’d hate to be in that position today.”

Lynch - Gardner started the weekly classes last month and has already had a good uptake of clients. She said women will learn everything they need to know in a female-friendly environment.

“It’s only me teaching them, no men at all,” Lynch-Gardner said.

“I teach them karate kempo and the women learn everything that they would in a normal class – I just don’t go as hard

“I’ve had women in the past interested in learning martial arts but never did because they were intimidated or because of social or religious reasons.”

Lynch- Gardner’s classes run for 90

minutes and are open to school-aged girls right through to adults. Classes cost $10 each plus insurance.

Even if you don’t attend the classes for self- defence purposes, they’re an awesome way to get fit.

eâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the owner of a toy gun empire but Penrith resident Brad Towner is now facing jail time after being charged with several firearms offences.

When working on his costume for a Cosplay convention in 2010, Mr Towner noticed a gap in the market for fake firearms.

What then started as a small light bulb idea soon unravelled into a successful internationally acclaimed business.

But now, after seven years of trade, he is facing off with about 20 potential years of imprisonment for dealing what is considered illegal contraband â&#x20AC;&#x201C; gel guns. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been investigated three times prior to make sure that my products were indeed toys and that I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t some sort of illegal firearm dealer and every time they came in I was cleared, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just complete revenue raising,â&#x20AC;? Mr Towner said.

Mr Towner is being charged with â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;possession of three or more firearmsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;possess unauthorised firearmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;possess ammunition without holding a license, permit or authorityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;possess or use a prohibited weapon without a permitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;carry on activities of firearm dealer without being licensedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like banning deodorant cans because someone can light a lighter and turn it into a flamethrower, or banning kitchen knives,â&#x20AC;? Mr Towner said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gel balls or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;ammunitionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; are used in gardening for water absorption, you can buy them from Bunnings, hell they are even used to decorate vases, does that mean people all over the country have dangerous ammunition in their homes?â&#x20AC;?

As it stands, the law in New South Wales states that gel blasters are classified as an airgun or firearm and that gel balls are classified as ammunition.

In Queensland, there is no such law around gel blasters or gel balls. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gel blasters that substantially duplicate in appearance a military style firearm are classified as a prohibited firearm. Please be advised that it is an offence to possess or use a firearm, pistol or prohibited firearm unless the person holds the relevant licence or permit,â&#x20AC;? a NSW Police spokesperson said.

Even though paintball was deregulated last year, it is reported that the two sports share great similarities.

This month Mr Towner will face Penrith Local Court for an arraignment where he plans to plead not guilty to the charges, despite being offered a plea deal which would guarantee no jail time.

McKeown takes early advantage over Ayres with top spot on Penrith ballot paper NICOLA BARTON

rucial ballot paper positions have been decided ahead of next week’s State Election.

10 candidates are set to battle it out for the seat of Penrith with five in Londonderry and four in Mulgoa.

Labor Candidate Karen McKeown secured top spot in Penrith, a possible advantage in what is expected to be a tight race on election day.

“Number one, I suppose what it does do is give you a psychological lift, I don’t know if that really translates into votes on the day but it is always the sought after spot, I’m really pleased,” Ms McKeown said.

Independent Mark Tyndall secured second spot while Kaj McBeth drew third and sitting MP Stuart Ayres was fourth.

Ms McKeown, who is also a sitting Penrith City Councillor, said it’s positive that there’s such a huge field in the race for Penrith.

“It’s a big win for democracy at a time when a lot of people are disengaging in politics, I think having so many candidates just goes to show what a jewel Penrith is,” she said.

“I wouldn’t say I’m feeling confident but I certainly know the hard work I’ve been putting in, listening to what people have been telling me and I’ve committed to representing those people and their interests.”

Mr Ayres said he wasn’t fussed on his position as people know where they are voting.

“I take this job very seriously, my representation of this community is very important to me and I think it’s important to the community that they have someone who works very hard for them,” he said.

“My point to people this election is to think about who you trust to manage the NSW economy and who you trust to deliver for Penrith, our record there is very strong.”

Rail link to new airport on track NICOLA BARTON

A

Metro rail line to the new Western Sydney Airport is set to be complete in time for the airport’s opening in 2026, the State and Federal Governments have promised.

The commitment was made at the Liberals & Nationals NSW campaign launch which was held last Sunday at Penrith Panthers Leagues Club.

On Monday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison joined NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Penrith MP Stuart Ayres and Liberal Candidate for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh at St Marys Railway Station to discuss the commitment.

Ms Berejiklian said more than $2 billion will be invested in the North South Rail Line over the next four years.

“We know the Western Sydney Airport and the Aerotropolis are the future of Sydney and that is why we are making the investment now for construction on the rail line to begin in 2021,” she said.

“At the same time we are building the crucial road links and are investing $3.6 billion to build the new M12 motorway and upgrade existing roads including the Northern Road and Bringelly Road.”

The North South Rail Line will link up with the existing Sydney Trains T1 Western Line at St Marys through to the Airport.

The development of a business case for the North South Rail Line is in progress and is expected to be delivered by the end of this year.

“For years people have talked about backing the Western Sydney International Airport. For years people have promised more rail links in the western suburbs.

We’re going to deliver both,” Mr Morrison said.

“This project and the new Western Sydney International Airport will drive economic growth for western Sydney, boost jobs and housing and make it into a key hub of our city all as part of our Western Sydney City Deal.”

The NSW Government will fund half of the cost of the rail line, with the remainder to be funded by the Commonwealth.

Mr Ayres said it was a “game changer” for the western Sydney community.

“This project completely changes the face of outer western Sydney,” Mr Ayres said.

“It is the rail line that the outer western Sydney community needs and has been demanding.”

elief for community service workers could be on the horizon with Labor promising to provide a ‘price floor’ if it wins the State Election.

Workers say a lack of Government funding has forced community services to either underpay their staff or cut vital programs. Labor says its commitment will ensure workers are paid fairly and that services aren’t tendered out to the cheapest subcontractor.

Branch Secretary of Australian Services Union NSW & ACT, Natalie Lang joined Deputy State Opposition Leader Penny Sharpe at the Koolyangarra Aboriginal Family Centre in Cranebrook on Wednesday to announce the commitment.

“We’re funded by Government to be able to do this important work to try and build social inclusion on behalf of the Government, citizens and society, yet what we are seeing time and time again are a tax on our services and neglect by Government,” Ms Lang said.

Ms Sharpe said “the scourge” of subcontracting community services to underpaid workers must end.

“The last two years we’ve seen a very poor way of dealing with community services from a Government that isn’t about a civil society or the public interest, we’ve got a Government that believes that NSW should be run like a corporation,” she said.

Labor says if elected it will implement three strategies aimed at stopping the underpayment of community workers.

Overdevelopment curse One Nation says its State and Federal policies will stop unwanted development NICOLA BARTON

O

ne Nation candidate Carl Halley wants to go back to basics with stopping overdevelopment his top priority coming into next week’s State Election.

Mr Halley met with his campaign manager Mark Latham on the corner of Henry and Evan Street in Penrith, to discuss the proposed 34- storey building on the old Heartland Holden site.

Mr Latham believes One Nation is the only party that can stop overdevelopment with stricter immigration and zoning policies on the cards.

“The overwhelming message here is overdevelopment and the prospect of a 34- storey tower here, there’s a couple of points, one being that the people of Penrith haven’t asked for the whole face of Penrith to change so dramatically, they didn’t vote for it and they didn’t have a say in it,” he said.

“Penrith shouldn’t be changing like this with overdevelopment in the absence of consultation, proper planning processes and the jobs, services, schools and health care to cope with this dramatic population increase.”

Mr Latham said One Nation’s policies will

take immigration back to a 20th century average, bringing it down from 200,000 a year to 70,000, which he said would average about 35,000 a year to Sydney instead of 100,000.

“If you vote One Nation Federally you’ll get a lower immigration policy and if you vote One Nation State you will get a policy of planning controls where we would stop high rise land development, together it’s the only effective way to stop overdevelopment,” he said.

Mr Halley said overdevelopment is the root of all problems in Penrith, including parking, congestion, housing prices and emergency waiting times at Nepean Hospital.

With a vast background in security, Mr Halley also noted that he is against the prospect of pill testing but would not ban Defqon.1 from continuing in Penrith.

“It’s freedom of democracy, young people need a place to go to, if you put all of the checks and balances in place, my background is in security so I have a lot of experience in the matter with venue security.

You don’t stop people’s freedom because someone does something wrong,” he said.

Mr Halley said it’s time for voters to move away from the major parties and said they “do nothing but splash money to fix problems they created”.

usiness minded locals came together at the Strong Australia Network Forum on Wednesday, to talk strategy about the potential Aerotropolis job boom.

The Business Council of Australia joined forces with the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce to host the discussion panel, touching on topics such as job creation, improving skill sets and economic growth.

Panelists included CEO of Business Council of Australia Jennifer Westacott, BHP CEO Andrew Mackenzie, Western Sydney University Assistant Vice- Chancellor Professor Andy Marks and Western Sydney Airport CEO Graham Millett.

Ms Westacott, who has been travelling with the Strong Australia event around the country, said it is a great way for local businesses to plan for the future.

“What we’ve been trying to do is to get out and listen to people about what’s happening in western Sydney, what’s happening in Penrith, what are the priorities of local businesses and individuals, how can we advocate for those things and what role will businesses play in the future,” she said.

“We want to get a sense of how people are feeling, there’s a huge net of services out there and we want to talk about how

we can get the most out of things, how we can get more jobs and how are we going on skills.”

The State Government has said the Aerotropolis will generate about 200,000 smart jobs.

Professor Marks said this simply won’t happen with the current policy settings and freeze on higher education funding.

He believes that for places like Penrith with lower university attendance rates, it is critical to drive higher education skill sets but also ensure the jobs for those people are local.

“That’s the urgency, you can’t just address the skills issues without addressing the job density issue and that job density is currently in the east,” he said.

With big changes on the horizon, greater western Sydney is widely viewed as a land of opportunity.

Ms Westacott said it’s time for big and small businesses to work together to ensure they preserve and support new and emerging industries in order to cope with the change.

“I hope that attendees got a sense of confidence that people are listening to them and I hope they sense that they are now in an area that has the potential to really boom, but boom in a way that can really preserve people’s quality of life,” she said.

Man jailed for 12 months over crash that caused bad injuries

A driver high on drugs who crashed into a motorcyclist in Penrith, causing the rider to lose his leg and the use of his right arm, has been jailed for 12 months.

Violence erupted inside the court room shortly after Scott Andrew Tobin’s sentence was handed down, with the victim and offender’s families having to be restrained by correctional officers.

Earlier, Penrith District Court heard Tobin, 30, had consumed cocaine, MDMA and three types of prescription drugs before he veered his Toyota utility into oncoming traffic along Coreen Avenue, slamming into Michael Bruce, 32, about 3pm on July 9, 2017.

Bruce, who was travelling on his Harley Davidson at the back of a pack of five, was thrown into the air and left permanently disfigured.

He suffered mild bleeding to the brain and had his right leg amputated at the knee.

Tobin, a suspended driver at the time, fled the scene and was found “glassy eyed” and walking unsteadily down a side street about 200 metres from the crash site.

He initially told police he was at his cousin’s house nearby when he heard the crash, and maintains he “can’t recall” how he came to be the driver.

The court heard there was no evidence of speeding and it is possible Tobin, who claims he was initially unaware he had hit Bruce, may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

In an emotional impact statement read out with the help of his wife, Bruce said he “can’t even put into words” the pain he experiences daily.

“No child should have to witness that, or plan their life around ‘if daddy is going to be up to it’,” he said.

“My life is ruined and there is only one person to blame for that.”

The court heard Tobin “drank heavily, snorted cocaine” and ingested MDMA to

let off steam the night before the crash following a distressing call from his mother.

He returned home about 10pm and took non-prescription medication to help him sleep.

The bricklayer woke Sunday morning feeling groggy and that afternoon was driven by a work associate to get supplies for a job the next day.

Tests revealed Tobin used cocaine within 12 hours and MDMA most likely “within a few hours of the collision”.

Despite repeated submissions by the defence in favour of a non-custodial alternative, Judge Sean Grant could not be swayed.

He said the need for general deterrence “outweighed” the remorse or rehabilitation of the offender, finding Tobin required “an immediate term of imprisonment”.

He said it was not a case of “momentary inattention”, but that Tobin “should not have been behind the wheel” at all.

“He went for a Sunday motorcycle with friends – a joyous moment turned into a nightmare,” he said of Bruce during sentencing remarks.

Tobin read a letter to Bruce saying “not a day goes by” that he doesn’t think of him.

“The hate and resentment you feel towards me, I feel towards myself,” the father-of-one said.

He is eligible for release on parole on March 7, 2020.

Man accused of sending threatening texts to ex

A man who allegedly threatened his ex over text has been bail refused.

Andrew Wilson sat silently in the dock as his matter was mentioned at Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

His lawyer argued there was nothing to prove he was the one sending the texts and suggested it could be a case of the complainant coming up with it “to get at” Mr Wilson.

He submitted it was “very unlikely” Wilson would serve a full time custodial sentence, and noted there was a delay in complaint and continued messaging after the threats were allegedly made.

But Magistrate Peter Thompson disagreed, saying he would likely serve time given he was on parole.

His matter was adjourned to June 18 for a defended hearing.

Drink driver fronts court again as jail alternatives questioned

Anthony Joseph O’Brien will be assessed to determine if there are other alternatives to full time jail after he pleaded guilty to drink driving again.

The offender faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with high-range drink driving.

Magistrate Peter Thompson warned him the “court has very little options”, noting he had received custodial sentences for drink driving in the past.

His matter was adjourned to April 13.

Man on bail commits further crimes; now behind bars

A man who allegedly committed further dishonesty offences while on bail will remain behind bars.

James Andrew Gorman was refused bail when he appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday.

Magistrate Peter Thompson determined there was a “pattern of escalating conduct on the part of the accused” before revoking his current bail and denying his release on the fresh charges.

His matter was adjourned to March 21 to join up with his other matters.

Woman cops ban and fine after being busted drink driving An unlicenced motorist caught drink driving has been hit with a $1,300 fine and disqualified for 12 months.

Allison May Arnott fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with mid-range drink driving.

The court heard Arnott was on her way to a 24 hour chemist when she was pulled over for a RBT. Magistrate Peter Thompson noted her references incorrectly stated it was out of character for her.

“There should have been a lesson learnt some time ago,” he said, noting it was not her first drink driving conviction.

She was also ordered to enter a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Intoxicated man found with drugs in ‘one-off’ incident

A man has been slugged with a $400 fine for drug possession.

The man faced Penrith Local Court unrepresented last Thursday and asserted it was a one-off.

The court heard the offender, who has never been in trouble before, was found with 0.044g of methamphetamines on his person at St Marys on November 27 last year.

“Do you have ongoing issues,” Magistrate Peter Thompson pressed, giving him the option to attend the Magistrate’s Early Referral into Treatment program.

“No,” came the man’s reply, adding he was intoxicated at the time.

Man without licence busted driving in early hours

Alex Benjamin Aukino has been stripped of his licence for a further six months for driving while his licence was cancelled.

Penrith Local Court head Aukino had driven from Smithfield to Penrith to pick up his partner and was busted illegally behind the wheel at 1.35am.

Magistrate Geoff Hiatt noted he had served a period of disqualification but had failed to reinstate his licence at the completion of his ban.

He was convicted and fined $700.

St Clair: Man found with Xanax pills and cannabis

A man has been charged after he was found in possession of illicit drugs on Monday, March 11.

At 12.30pm police were patrolling on Endeavour Avenue in St Clair when they pulled over a man riding a trail bike.

A search of the man was conducted and two substances police allege to be prescription Xanax pills and cannabis were found.

He was charged with ‘possess prohibited drugs’ to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, April 8.

Penrith: Woman uses high heels to attack security guard

A woman has been charged after she attacked a security guard with a pair of high heels in Penrith last weekend.

At 12.50am on Sunday, March 10 the 18-year-old Richmond woman was asked to leave a hotel in Penrith due to her not wearing any shoes.

She began to argue with staff and as a result began to attack the security guard with the pair of high heel shoes in her hands.

Police were called to the scene. She was charged with ‘common assault’ and ‘excluded person fail to leave licenced premises’.

She will appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, April 2.

Werrington: Neighbourhood dispute turns violent

Police are investigating a neighbourhood dispute that occurred at Parkes Avenue, Werrington on Monday, March 11.

At 4.50pm an argument occurred between two male neighbours which became physical.

During the scuffle a knife was produced and as a result, a male received lacerations to the hand, as he attempted to disarm the knife-yielder.

The pair, both aged 37, were later charged with the armed male being

charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ and the second man being charged with ‘reckless wounding’.

Both men are due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, April 2.

Colyton: Man charged after attacking police officer

A 23-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences after allegedly head butting a police officer.

Police were patrolling the Great Western Highway near Colyton when they were called to a hotel on Saturday, March 9 at 10.45pm.

The offender, who had failed to quit the premises, engaged in an offensive manner with officers before an altercation occurred which saw the offender head butt an officer.

He was detained by police and charged.

Man caught by police after lengthy pursuit on Monday

Police have charged a 27-year-old man after a lengthy pursuit through several suburbs on Monday, March 11.

At 10am a stolen car was reported to police from Coreen Avenue, Penrith which was later spotted by police at a hotel on the Great Western Highway near Colyton.

When officers approached the driver he took off, initiating a pursuit.

The offender dumped the car at a service station in St Marys and stole another vehicle. Police disengaged but were notified that the offender had a collision with a car on High Street in Penrith before taking off again.

He was then picked up on Belmore Street where he was driving on the wrong side of the road, before dropping the vehicle and fleeing by foot through Henry Street.

He was captured and arrested by police a short time later.

During a body search an amount of illicit drugs believed to be methamphetamines was found. He was charged with a range of offences.

Who gets the kids?

If you have separated from your partner and there is a child of the relationship under the age of 18, there is a presumption under the Family Law Act that it is in the best interests of the child for both parents to have equal shared parental responsibility (‘ESPR’).

The aim of Act is to ensure that the child enjoys a meaningful relationship with each of their parents.

This essentially means that both parents are to have a role in making joint decisions about long-term, major issues that affect the child, along with decisions in relation to the child’s welfare and development. This includes but is not limited to the following: • Education; • The child’s cultural or religious upbringing; • Health and medication; and • Living arrangements.

The presumption of ‘ESPR’ can be rebutted in court if there are reasonable grounds to believe a parent has engaged in abuse of the child or if there have been occasions of family violence (including using threatening behaviour towards a member of the family or other parent).

In these circumstances, the court will determine how parental responsibility is

to be split between the parents, and they may grant sole parental responsibility to one parent. The court’s primary considerations when determining parental responsibility will always be what is in the child’s best interests, i.e. the benefit to the child of having a meaningful relationship with both parents, and the need to protect the child from physical and/or psychological harm.

It is important to remember that ‘ESPR’ does not mean that the child has to spend equal time with each parent. If it is inappropriate for a child to spend equal time with each parent (e.g. due to work commitments), the court will consider whether the child should spend substantial and significant time with a parent. The court will look at the practically behind the parents having equal or substantial time with the child, and whether or not the arrangement will be in the child’s best interests.

There are a range of considerations that need to be taken into account when determining what is in the best interests of your child when it comes to parenting arrangements. We strongly suggest speaking to one of our family lawyers if you would like advice relating to your children’s matters.

Review into electronic conveyancing The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) is reviewing the fees associated with electronic conveyancing (eConveyancing) for the first time.

Around 85 per cent of property transactions in NSW will be required to

use eConveyancing from July 1, 2019.

Transactions such as transfers, mortgages and caveats will have to be lodged electronically.

IPART’s review is focused on the fees charged by and to the electronic lodgment network operators.

Wood turning group looks to keep an old tradition alive

he Ornamental Turners Group of Australia are trying to keep their hobby alive. The group are looking for members who share the common interest in using equipment to make beautiful ornamental wood turned articles.

“We do more than just wood turning, we decorate it and make sure we don’t lose the ornamental side of the hobby,’’ President John Krook said.

The art dates back to the 1500s when items were made for royalty or churches.

It fell in and out of popularity and it’s sadly declining again.

“It had its heyday in the 1800s in England and then resurrected again after the second World War. Our group started in the 1990s, but it is dying a bit unfortunately,” Mr Krook admitted.

The group meets once a week in Luddenham with roughly 30 participants.

Mr Krook encourages anyone interested in the artform to consider joining the group. For information, call 4739 1764 .

hen diagnosed with Melanoma at the young age of 29, Emma Dunlop was determined to use her time left to advocate for skin cancer awareness.

Now, her sister Kylie Murray has taken it upon herself to continue her sibling’s legacy by partaking in the Melanoma March, in the hope to raise vital funds for skin cancer research.

The 4km walk will take place on Sunday, March 17 at Regatta Park and will be a day filled with food, face painting and raffles.

Ms Murray said spreading awareness and starting important conversations was her sister’s mission.

“I don’t want anyone to go through what she went through, it was absolutely horrendous,” she said.

“There’s both a lack of education and ignorance around it, it’s not an old people’s cancer, it doesn’t discriminate and it is truly a black death cancer.”

Ms Dunlop grew up with a hairline freckle, but it wasn’t until her mother begged her to get it checked in 2015 that doctors urged for it to be removed immediately.

This started her four- year battle as the cancer quickly spread to her lymph nodes, causing tumours on her brain.

This is the first year the family will be doing the walk without her.

“We don’t want her death to be in vain, so now it’s our job to help fulfil her purpose and continue on her legacy by advocating for this,” Ms Murray said.

He’s kilted to kick cancer Medical dramas won’t stop Castlereagh local from taking part in fundraiser EMILY FESZCZUK

C

ompeting in a marathon is a major achievement for anyone but even moreso for David Attrill. The Castlereagh local has made it from the couch to track just eight weeks after being hospitalised.

He underwent a quintuple bypass at the end of last year and was recovering well before he suffered a stroke in January and then a second just a week after being home. Being bedridden didn’t stop him in his quest to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer, and now he’s competing in the Kilted to Kick Cancer CBR 48 Hour race in Canberra this weekend.

“My brother- in- law Brian has had prostate cancer for a long time, and I love doing long walks so the two fit together really well,” Mr Attrill said.

Mr Attrill competed last year and walked 163km but is just happy to be a part of the event this year after his medical complications.

“I want to raise money as it’s very special to me, but I desperately want to do it for myself as well,’’ he said.

“This is the biggest thing in my life at the moment and has kept me going through rehabilitation.

Mr Attrill does have permission from his doctor and cardiologists and will be walking slowly with rests along the way so he can complete the event.

“I told the nurse and she said they had

never heard of anyone wanting to do a marathon while still in rehab,’’ he said.

The kilted event is meant to open conversation about prostate cancer which Mr Attrill believes is important to discuss.

“Not many people bother to put prostate cancer in the public eye even though

it’s the second biggest killer in men in Australia,” he said.

“The most important thing is to get the investigation started.”

Music by the River One of the great joys of living in Penrith is having the Nepean River on our doorstep.

The river is iconic – it’s unique, it’s beautiful and it is a special space the whole community can enjoy.

Most of us have done the Great River Walk, had a family picnic or birthday at Tench Reserve or delighted in the jacaranda trees blooming.

Council hosts regular free community events at the river throughout the year to bring this space to life.

This Sunday one of our regular favourites, Music by the River, is returning to Tench Reserve. Local musicians will put on a show – a perfect opportunity to exhale and savour your weekend without stretching your budget.

Music by the River happens twice a year and provides a platform for our truly amazing local talent to bring their music to the community.

This weekend our musicians will be

there playing original music along with some famous favourites. The line-up includes David Agius, Hannah Beeby, Jake Edgley, Jarrah Ferris-Smith, Olivia Grey, Andy Illinois and Karleigh Rose.

Food trucks will also be there to satisfy your hunger or you can pack a picnic to really settle in and unwind.

With free activities for the kids, you can enjoy, sit back in a deck chair and soak up our sights and sounds on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

This concert not only showcases brilliant music on the river with views of the Blue Mountains, it’s a great day out. If you’ve been before then you’re sure to come back. If you haven’t been before, put it in your diary, come along and enjoy the best entertainment on offer.

Planning for the future Luke Priddis Foundation aims to take autism programs to a brand new level NICOLA BARTON

E

xciting things are on the horizon at the Luke Priddis Foundation (LPF) as they seek to expand to support the growing population.

An adult skill program, K- 12 school, teachers training aid and even a driving program are on the cards, according to General Manager John Thain.

Mr Thain told the Weekender it’s important to ensure no one with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) falls through the cracks throughout any stage of their lives.

“There’s no program that I’m aware of to get young people with autism or any disability on the road driving, so I think it’s really important that they have that opportunity,” he said.

Mr Thain noted that public transport can be particularly distressing for people living with disabilities as unpredictable noises and crowds take over.

“There is no reason that they can’t drive a vehicle, it might take them longer but we really need to start developing a program to give them that opportunity,” he said.

“For them it will be about clear instructions, you can’t just say stop because they will stop immediately, you’ll need to say pull up and stop at that white line, they

A K-12 primary school dedicated to children with ASD is something that Holly and Luke Priddis have always dreamed of.

The centre is currently looking for partnerships, and business models to explore the best possible way to make this a reality.

They also have a teachers training program in the works, that is set to be available by the end of the year.

The learning aid will explain what

autism is, how to deal with it and how to get the best out of the child in an education environment.

ocal resident Erin Johnson has been named Mulgoa Woman of the Year as she advocates to break the silence around miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss.

In 2015, Ms Johnson was diagnosed with a rare disease called cystic hygroma, which lead to the tragic miscarriage of her daughter Ava. Since then she has taken it upon herself to support women who are grieving the

loss of their own child by sewing clothes for stillborns at Nepean Hospital.

What started small soon became a massive volunteer effort which has seen clothes donated to hospitals all across Australia and overseas.

“I started the volunteer group soon after Ava was born as a way of giving back and working through my grief,” Ms Johnson said.

“I was sitting at a sewing machine trying my best to sew simple blankets and nappies for other parents who would walk the same path that we now were.”

Words mean everything Five years of hard work: St Clair poet launches collection of unique poems EMILY FESZCZUK

E

gyptian - born immigrant Pola Fanous picked up his pen at 14- years- old because he had a lot to say but wasn’t comfortable talking to people.

It was through this that he realised that words matter and discovered his love for poetry. The now 20-year-old’s debut book STRONGSOFT is being released today, incorporating 130 unique poems that have been written over five years.

“I’ve taken years to write, edit and compile this collection and I’ve selfpublished it to the highest standards possible. It is years of heartbreak, aching, passion and love. It is pure, it is ugly,’’ Mr Fanous said.

“This book is my life philosophy: the concept of strength through softness, of sacred balance, and in it are poems I’ve written in the last five years of my life.

“It is a coming- of-age tale of raw poetic truth.”

The St Clair resident is not only a spoken word poet but an educator and political activist for western Sydney.

He competed in the 2018 Australian Poetry Slam and was declared the NSW Slam Champion.

“It felt beautiful to be acknowledged because poetry is a very abstract thing sometimes, so it’s important to see words hit home and performing is a very profound experience for me, it’s when I feel most alive,” he said.

He also runs writing workshops with high school students and is beginning to make music.

Mr Fanous tells stories about being a young immigrant man living in western Sydney and struggling with things like addiction, anxiety and heartbreak.

“Poetry gives me a vehicle to tell my own story, to reclaim my own narrative, and that’s critical to me,” he said.

“If you don’t tell your story, someone else will tell it for you, and we all know how ugly that can get.’’

Mr Fanous believes poetry is experiencing something of a revival with the younger generation, who have shorter attention spans as they can consume art that is sharp and concise.

“Poets are more important than people realise, they help us understand ourselves,” he said.

Mr Fanous will be performing and having a book launch at Bankstown Arts Centre on Tuesday, March 26 at 7pm.

panel of energy experts met at the Penrith Bowling Club recently to discuss solar energy with locals.

The event, held by community group Solar Citizens, saw Penrith locals learn how solar is booming across NSW with 18 per cent of houses now producing their own clean power from the sun.

Penrith Bowling Club has its own impressive solar panel system, which saved them $18,000 on their electricity bill in the first year of installation.

Dr Bruce Mountain, from the Victorian Energy Policy Centre, and Dr Bradley Smith, from the NSW Nature Conservation Council, featured on the panel telling of the benefits of solar energy.

“Power has become extraordinarily expensive while solar is becoming more affordable all the time,” Dr Mountain said.

Solar Citizens National Director Joseph Scales believes political parties need to announce policy pathways to groups who face barriers in accessing solar.

He said it is not always possible for renters, people living in apartments and low-income houses to get rooftop solar.

DODDS Here we are again. The start of a new season, where hope and expectations are high – and every club’s dream of being at ANZ Stadium on the first weekend in October is still well and truly alive.

Penrith kick off the season with what appears to have become a new NRL tradition – a battle with arch rivals Parramatta on Sunday afternoon at Panthers Stadium.

Forget the fact that these two sides played in a trial just a fortnight ago and the Eels won 20- 0 – anyone who follows the form lines of trials should head to Randwick on Saturday and back 100/1 shots all day and see what they walk home with.

There is of course something of a dark cloud hanging over this game given both sides have been rocked by negative head-

lines at the tail end of the pre-season, with Tyrone May and Peni Terepo the on-field casualties. Neither will line up for their respective sides this weekend for well publicised reasons.

The Eels will overcome that easily enough given it’s an individual issue, but the sex tape scandal that hit the Panthers was widespread and it’ll be interesting to see if the team can brush it aside come 4.05pm on Sunday.

All of that said, this promises to be an intriguing clash.

You kind of know what you’re going to get with Penrith given there hasn’t been an enormous amount of recruitment over the off- season, though new faces Tyrell Fuimaono and Hame Sele both get a run off the bench; the latter apparently trained the house down during the off-season.

Parramatta is an entirely different story, however. They parted ways with Corey

TRIPLE M ABC 702 Norman at the end of last season, with Brad Arthur putting his faith in youngster Dylan Brown to get the job done in the halves alongside Mitchell Moses, who himself is under enormous pressure to perform this season.

Meanwhile former Panther Maika Sivo and 2018 premiership winner Blake Ferguson are the new look wingers for the Eels.

The Eels are without Terepo, Manu Ma’u and most likely Junior Paulo for Sunday’s game due to injury, while the Panthers will be without Viliame Kikau. It’s a big blow for the home side as the Fijian powerhouse would have really caused some damage on that left side on Sunday.

Parramatta would remember this corresponding fixture from last season, when after being up 14- 0 their entire season seemingly collapsed in the space of 50 minutes, with Penrith claiming their first

victim of the season. It is a reminder of how important opening round matches can be, especially when you are desperate for confidence as the Eels would be at the moment after such a disappointing 2018 season.

For those who love a little bit of stats and history, Penrith haven’t lost an opening round encounter at home since 2012.

I’m expecting Penrith to have a little bit too much class for Parramatta in the end, but I doubt this will be a blow-out result.

I’m expecting a tight first half tussle with the Panthers to edge in front as the fulltime siren gets closer. The home side just has the better cattle.

GUS ROCKED  The fallout from the sex tape scandal

that rocked the final stages of Penrith’s pre-season is far from over. While it’s unlikely any further videos will be released, there’s no question others do exist, some of which involve high profile members of the playing group. In fact, when club officials hauled the entire playing group into Panthers HQ in the wake of the scandal, they were shocked at just how many players admitted they could be in videos.

The scandal has shattered Panthers boss Phil Gould, who has worked hard to build a strong culture at the club. While reports that Gould is close to walking away over the crisis appear to be off the mark, he seems to have temporarily at least lost his swagger and aura. The scandal will eventually fade away, but it’s certainly left a few scars with plenty more bits and pieces to play out.

 Meanwhile, Gould has shut down his

Twitter account yet again, with the Panthers’ woes and his controversial views on fantasy football competitions clearly taking their toll.

 A few special guests have popped in at

Panthers training over the off-season, and not all with a rugby league background.

Rising boxing star Bilal Akkaway was among those who visited the playing group over summer, sharing his advice and expertise.

 The team’s pre-season training hasn’t

all been about field sessions in the scorching heat and tough gym workouts. In fact I’m told the playing group has been doing plenty of yoga and mind and body work at training.

 Penrith officials have been extremely

impressed with Tim Grant over the offseason. Not only has he trained the house down, but he’s been attending plenty of meetings with corporate partners and working hard to increase his presence around the club. Grant was rewarded for his hard work with a spot in Ivan Cleary’s 21-man squad for Sunday’s match against the Eels. His first grade career is not over yet, he’ll surely get a crack at some stage.

 Life after football is still something

many young players don’t think about, which is where Penrith Welfare Officer Glen Liddiard steps in. Liddiard has secured work for Brent Naden, Brock Naden, Daine Laurie, Liam Coleman, Alan Fitzgibbon and Luke Geary with NBN Co. With work to continue on the NBN for several decades, the players will always have a strong job to fall back on once their footy careers are finished.

 You’ll notice a little change to the

post-match press conferences across the NRL this year, with the captain no longer to appear. Coaches will ride solo at the media briefings this season.

keting team worked for months on the ‘Panther Anthem’ video that was released last week to pump fans up. It’s a great video but it needed a big tick of approval before being released. Head Coach Ivan Cleary had the final say on the video’s content, giving it the thumbs up before the go button was pushed.



One of rugby league’s genuine nice guys and former Panthers assistant coach Peter Mulholland is facing the battle of his life after being diagnosed with non-

Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The 65-year-old, who was on the sidelines with John Lang when Penrith won the title in 2003, is undergoing treatment after being officially diagnosed in January.

 The Panthers have secured the

services of Manly’s Frank Winterstein on a one-year deal. The 32-year-old has been granted an immediate release from the Sea Eagles to head to the foot of the Mountains. James Tamou was excited about the signing: “A player of Frank’s calibre is massive for us, he’s a big man. I remember taking it off the kick-off once and getting pumped by him. It’s one less person I have to worry about.”

TAYLOR Panthers leadership group members James Tamou and James Maloney have thrown their support behind suspended teammate Tyrone May. Last week the 22- year- old utility was stood down by the NRL and is now facing police charges after the release of several sex tapes featuring Penrith players.

May is charged with two counts of ‘recording intimate image without consent’, and two counts of ‘disseminate image without consent’.

While May can’t play during the standdown period, he is still able to train with his teammates.

He cut a lonely figure earlier this week when he was spotted training on his own, away from the main playing group.

Speaking with the media on Monday

afternoon, Maloney (pictured bottom right) said the Minchinbury junior is hanging in there despite his clouded future.

“Tyrone’s obviously doing it tough like anyone would expect but he’s holding up alright. He wants to put it behind him but that can’t happen until he goes through the [court] process,” Maloney said.

After experiencing two young players take their own lives during his time at the North Queensland Cowboys, James Tamou knows how important it is for fellow players to lend their support during a time of crisis.

“As players, I think the only thing we can do is lend our support,” he said.

“I’ve seen it personally happen with young guys coming up from North Queensland being in the wrong mind frame. Their personal wellbeing is important to us… they are around training but you never know what happens in those four walls in a room by yourself.

“You think to yourself, was there something I could have done? I don’t want to go through that again.”

Following last week’s headlines, club bosses held several meetings with the Penrith playing group about the ramifications of bad off- field behaviour. It’s understood Panthers General Manager Phil Gould did it particularly tough during that week.

“Gus stuck his neck out for this club, he single- handedly pulled it out from the bottom. He’s just trying his best to unravel everything and make it as clean as he can,” Tamou said.

“We had countless hours in the meeting room and we all had to sit through it, I’m ready to move on from that. We’ve had all the head honchos come through, so my main focus is football.”

Maloney said while last week’s events weren’t ideal on the eve of the 2019 season, all is still on track for a good year.

“I wouldn’t call it derailing by any means,” he said.

“It’s not ideal but the club’s dealt with it and we move on.”

May is due to front court again in May.

TAMOU: EELS POSE THREAT NATHAN

TAYLOR Panthers forward James Tamou said his side will have to be at their very best this Sunday if they are to knock off last year’s wooden spooners in the first game of the 2019 season.

Parramatta and Penrith met in a preseason trial at Panthers Stadium just a fortnight ago, with a new- look Eels side running away emphatic winners 20-0.

Speaking with the media this week, Tamou said he was taken aback with how determined Parramatta were that evening.

“I was quite surprised by them… they were licking their lips. We were keen to play but not as keen as them,” the 30-yearold admitted.

“Parramatta were clinical and we dug ourselves a hole. Coming off last year, they’ve recruited well.”

While losing any game isn’t ideal, Tamou said his side took plenty of positives out of

the trial and will be a much different and focused team this Sunday, in front of an expected sellout crowd.

“Coming off a loss there is always a silver lining and we definitely need to lift,” he said.

“It’s a good thing because we know where we have to be to match them and it’s going to be a tough match.”

Entering his 11th season in the top grade, the Cowboys premiership-winning forward said he’s looking forward to Sunday’s NRL opener after another long, hot pre-season.

“You have 25 rounds but Round 1 is always special,” Tamou said.

“It’s the opener, you’re meeting all the new fans over the pre- season, you’ve invested all the hard work, so you really want to get your season off to a good start.

“Hopefully we get a sold out crowd on Sunday afternoon.”

Meanwhile, James Maloney said he’s feeling like a youngster again after successful surgery on his neck in the offseason.

s there anything better in rugby league than the anticipation leading into Round 1 of the competition?

Every player in every team in the NRL has been “training the house down”, and is “bigger, fitter and stronger” than they’ve ever been before.

Every fan is filled with hope and optimism that it will be their side who’ll be holding the NRL trophy aloft on the first Sunday in October.

And Penrith Panthers fans have every reason to be filled with hope and optimism heading into the 2019 season.

With the likes of James Tamou, Reagan Campbell- Gillard, Isaah Yeo and Viliame Kikau, the Panthers have one of the best young forward packs in the competition.

In Nathan Cleary and James Maloney they have the New South Wales State of Origin halves; and in Josh Mansour, Waqa Blake and Dallin Watene- Zelezniak they’ve got some of the best finishers in the game.

Ivan Cleary’s return to the foot of the Mountains is also a reason for optimism for every Panthers fan.

Cleary Senior has long been thought

of as one of the sharpest minds in rugby league and with the squad assembled at Penrith he’ll have his best crack of turning that potential into a premiership.

It also can’t hurt that the general manager of the Panthers is two- time premiership winning coach, Phil Gould.

The Great Gus knows a thing or two about near-misses and ultimate glory, and you imagine that he and the team will be able to take it in their stride if things aren’t going to plan at some stage during the season.

The Panthers kick- off their season against their arch rivals the Parramatta Eels in what is shaping up as a mouthwatering Sunday afternoon clash.

Most punters have the Eels slotted in as wooden spoon favourites in 2019, but with the addition of Blake Ferguson and Shaun Lane and the emergence of young guns Reed Mahoney and Dylan Brown, the Eels promise to be anything but easybeats this season.

As last year proved every win during the regular season is crucial and with an away trip against Newcastle and a Round 3 clash against the Storm to follow their season

Why the Panthers are my pick for this year’s title

et me preface this by saying I’m an independent observer of the Panthers. I do love the loaded fries at the Panthers bistro, but I’m a supporter of another club so I come to this with genuine objectivity.

Phil Gould’s five- year plan might have been extended a few times, but 2019 will be the year.

The Panthers spent much of 2018 in the top four and were only knocked out in the second week of the finals by a point.

That’s a remarkable achievement given coach Anthony Griffin was sacked so late in the season.

This year the team has a coach who can take them the extra step.

Penrith were the comeback kings of 2018, on no fewer than eight occasions they came back from being 10 points down, many of those games deep in the second half. Had the semi- final against Cronulla run another five minutes they would’ve played in a Grand Final qualifier.

Returning coach Ivan Cleary will tighten up their first half defence but the side will retain its attacking flair.

While Trent Merrin has moved on, Viliame Kikau is only just warming up and, in 2019, could well be the most destructive forward in the game.

Nathan Cleary will be another year wiser but the key is James Maloney, he is an out and out winner. If rumours are correct that this could be his last year in the NRL before moving onto the UK Super League,

he’ll be wanting to ensure he does what he did at the Warriors, Roosters and Sharks, take his team to a Grand Final.

Come Sunday, October 6, it will be the Panthers doing the lap of honour at ANZ.

here used to be a video played at Penrith Stadium as part of the pregame build- up that featured Steve Carter saying the words “never give up, never give up”.

The video was used during a tough time at the Panthers and epitomised not only where Penrith was placed during that period in the late 1990s but Steve Carter himself as a player.

He was a dedicated, passionate player who wore his heart on his sleeve and was Penrith to the core.

To this day, nobody has played more first grade games for Penrith than Steve Carter.

He clocked up 244 appearances for the

Panthers, a record that won’t be broken for many seasons to come, with nobody in the current squad even close to that number of games for the men in black.

He made his debut for the Panthers in 1988, and was part of a wonderful era for the club that included the 1991 premiership.

The image of Carter pointing under the posts as Brad Izzard flew towards the tryline is one of the endearing memories from the 1991 decider.

Carter stuck solid with the Panthers even during the tough times, eventually retiring in 2001. He probably should have retired a year earlier, but with the club

record for matches played on the line, he opted to stick around for the 2001 season despite injuries plaguing his later years.

Carter’s long career at Penrith came during perhaps the most up and down time in the club’s long history. He was there for that first premiership, but he was also there when his teammate Ben Alexander was tragically killed in a car crash a year later.

He was also there during the Super League years and witnessed first hand the club’s fight for survival, and he was there when a new era began in 2000 – the Panthers were back in black and on the cusp of an exciting new period.

Panther Flashback

During his 14 years with the Panthers, Carter scored 65 tries and even managed to kick three goals – two in 1998 and another in his final year at the club.

Carter was never a glamour player of the game, and he only made one appearance for New South Wales – in 1992 – but he will forever be remembered as part of Penrith folklore.

In an era where Greg Alexander, Brad Fittler and Mark Geyer were the a-list stars at the Panthers, Carter let his work on the field do the talking.

He even inspired the club’s unofficial supporter group, at one stage called ‘Scarter’s Army’.

EXTRA MINUTES  The NRL has been assured that the

Sydney Cricket Ground surface will be in an acceptable condition for tonight’s big game between the Roosters and Rabbitohs. Extensive work was undertaken this week to get the ground up to scratch after it copped a hammering during a Super Rugby game last weekend. There’s fears that the SCG may struggle to handle a very busy schedule now that Allianz Stadium is unavailable.

 One of the big off-field battles this year

will be between Channel Nine and Fox League, who again go head to head with their NRL coverage this season. Nine will welcome the likes of Johnathan Thurston and Billy Slater to their team this season, while new panel shows will follow live games on Thursday and Friday nights.

Meanwhile, Fox League will continue to show every game live and have expanded their team to include the likes of Kalyn Ponga and Cooper Cronk. One legendary voice that will be missing from your screens for much of the year is Ray Warren. The veteran Nine commentator is cutting back significantly this year and will only call a handful of games.

 The NRL has announced the confirmation of a new Enterprise Agreement with

the game’s match officials. The NRL and the Professional Rugby League Match Officials have agreed to a four-year partnership.

 The NRL has chopped many photographers from grounds this season, implementing a new series of rules surrounding match day access. Even The Western Weekender, which has covered Penrith games for years, had its photographer accreditation dropped, before earning a late reprieve. It’s a strange move from the code given you would think media organisations willing to invest in original photography at games should be celebrated, not punished.

 The Parramatta Eels have stood down

Peni Terepo after being alerted to an alcohol-related incident in New Zealand last weekend. The club is now working with the relevant authorities in New Zealand, the NRL Integrity Unit and the RLPA to investigate the incident thoroughly.

 Billy Slater will be forever present at

Melbourne Storm matches at AAMI Park after the club announced the naming of the Northern Stand in his name. “Billy’s impact on the Storm has been enormous on and off the field,” Storm CEO, Dave

The FOX League team are back bigger and better in 2019 Donaghy said. “His on-field records speak volumes, but he has also helped rugby league become part of the morning chat in coffee shops, schools, board rooms and shop floors across the state.” The naming of the ‘Slater Stand’ follows the Victorian Government’s announcement of a statue of Slater to be permanently placed outside of AAMI Park alongside Storm captain, Cameron Smith.

 Canberra is hoping to welcome back

injured winger Jordan Rapana from injury earlier than expected. His rehab from shoulder surgery is ahead of schedule and he’s likely to be back by round 8.

 The NRL’s Head of Football Operations, Graham Annesley, will address the media every Monday afternoon during the season at Rugby League Central. It’s all part of a plan for the NRL to be more proactive and open when it comes to issues that emerge from weekend matches.

C

ountry rockers The Wolfe Brothers will bring plenty of heart to the Blue Mountains with their ‘Country Heart’ national tour.

The band has had an amazing past 12 months and their popularity has continued to soar after they won numerous gongs at the 2019 Golden Guitars.

“We had been nominated 13 times previously and lost 13 times, so it was amazing, you could feel the support, and the album seems to have been embraced by the whole industry,” bassist Tom Wolfe said.

The boys from Tasmania started out playing pub gigs before coming second on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’. Now, they’re headlining shows across the country.

“Our sound has changed as we have grown and matured as performers and songwriters, I think back to the guys we were in 2010 playing pubs, the things we were listening to and wanted to say is completely different to now. That’s the beauty of music, it’s always growing, changing and evolving,” Tom said.

“This album is definitely our best work yet, we took some risks and really pushed ourselves and our sound to the next phase. We knew we could do country rock well but wanted to see what else we

could do and we are pretty damn happy with the end result.

“The last 12 months we have taken our live show to the next level, we have always been known as a party band and we definitely still do that but we like to tell some stories, make people feel things, you laugh, you cry but most importantly you have a good time.”

While The Wolfe Brothers have had great success, they are still country boys at heart who love their home.

“It’s a change of lifestyle doing music and travelling, I love coming home to the farm doing the most normal things,” Tom said.

“Today I’m fixing a few fences and feed-

ing cows in the paddock then tomorrow I’m flying out again. It’s two different worlds but both great.”

Captain Marvel is the female superhero we have been waiting for.

The latest film in the Marvel franchise is set in the 1990s and tells the story of Carol Danvers and her journey into space as one of the universe’s most powerful heroes.

When a war between two alien races reaches her, Danvers finds herself in the centre.

The cast is lead by Brie Larson who is the hero that shoots thunderbolts from her fists and can pilot any spacecraft. She truly is a strong female lead who discovers that you can have both emotion and power. Jude Law also features along with a young Nick Fury played by Samuel L Jackson.

Special mention to Australian Ben Mendelsohn, who plays the leader of a group of aliens and is the source of hilarious lines throughout that break up the intricate storyline.

The movie features a very nostalgic ‘90s soundtrack along with a cute cat with a surprising side. A Stan Lee memorial was also added in for fans.

The film can seem complicated at times, particularly given there is a lot of history to cover, but its message is strong. Friendship, solidarity and truly believing in yourself triumph as key points, which will have you cheering along with Captain Marvel through her journey.

Melbourne astrophysicist Matt Agnew  will be looking for love on the next series of ‘The Bachelor’. The 31-year-old is already being billed as the “geek” and “nerd” and is certainly different from bachelors in the past. rugby league programs to their coverage for the 2019 season. Shoulder pain is very common, but scans don’t always reveal what’s really going on....

It can be quite common to have a sore or stiff shoulder at some point in your life, even without an injury.

People with a sore shoulder will often visit the GP as a starting off point. This would often result in a referral for an x- ray and diagnostic ultrasound to help aid in assessment.

All too commonly a scan of this description will show some form of pathology; most commonly a rotator cuff tear or bursitis.

This sounds horrible and can create panic but as demonstrated below it doesn’t always mean there will be an ongoing problem.

Shoulder anatomy The shoulder is a shallow ball and socket type joint which means it isn’t held in very well by the bones and ligaments and relies heavily on muscles to support it.

The Rotator Cuff is a group of four muscles that surrounds the shoulder and helps with stability of the shoulder and movements in all directions.

It is labelled a ‘cuff’ because the tendons of all four muscles mesh together and

encapsulate the shoulder in a flat blanket like structure.

Keeping this in mind it is possible to have a tear in one of these muscles and as long as the others are in good condition you may be able to return to normal painfree function.

How can a tear be normal?

As we age it is normal for certain parts of our body to become ‘worn’ looking under medical imaging.

This is well documented in most body parts with the shoulder being no exception.

In a recent study of people aged 50 to 59 years, 13 per cent of the patients had tears and as age increased the percentage of people that had tears also increased.

In the oldest group sample of people older than 80, a significant 51 per cent of patients had tears in their rotator cuff shown on ultrasound.

Can a tear be abnormal?

Yes! If a rotator cuff tear is causing a severe lack of strength which is causing you to be restricted in day to day actions regardless of pain then your tear is abnormal and you need a physiotherapist to assess it and help you with appropriate management strategies.

The main message we often try to get across to patients is: How you move is much more important than what your scan looks like.

Swimming lessons are too valuable to give up on, so while summer may be gone, make sure you keep lessons in your kids’ schedules...

As a child I came close to drowning, twice.

Once at the beach, where I was pulled up from under the water by another child, with the adults chatting, just metres away.

The second time I was older, a proficient swimmer, but I dived too deep, hit my head, and winded myself to the point that I was pulled from the pool, gasping desperately for breath.

Both experiences serve as a strong reminder about how important it is to be confident in the water, and the importance of supervision.

When my youngest son was sixmonths- old, knowing we had a pool, there was no question about starting swimming lessons – I couldn’t wait for him to be old enough.

Suddenly the beautiful pool in the backyard had become a deathtrap in my mind for my child who wasn’t yet able to swim.

Eva Bory’s was the obvious choice – I

actually learnt there myself in the 1970s, so I knew and trusted this local swim school.

My son did very well, as did his sister and brother in subsequent years, and swimming lessons have been a constant fixture in our lives for over a decade.

Swimming lessons represented one on one time when the children were babies, in the midst of a very busy life, and later represented commitment to advancing their swimming skills and achievement.

In addition to being a lifesaving skill, swimming provides additional fitness to give children a valuable edge in their chosen other sports or to maintain fitness in the off season, as well as a sense of achievement while advancing through swimming levels and skills.

Swimming provides the confidence to spend long days in the water with family and friends in the summer months, and attend water based activities.

We can never protect our children 24/7, or ensure they are 100 per cent safe around water – but we can do our very best to ensure they are able to swim, and equip them with the water safety skills needed to have the best chance of being able to cope if put in a tricky aquatic situation.

My best advice is to please persevere all year round, no excuses – swimming lessons are too valuable to give up on.

Recently, one of our young staff members attended an Eminem concert; she described it as one of the best nights of her life. The cost of going to see Eminem for a young person is a lot! However, she had one of the best times of her life, so undoubtedly this was money well spent.

When considering a budget, people automatically think it’s about spending less. Forming a budget isn’t about spending less, it is about directing your income to the things that are most important to you. Attending a concert is far from an essential cost, but if you get a lot of enjoyment from it, then it is meaningful spending. At Future Financial Services, the essence of what we do in this area is to direct as much of your income as possible to meaningful spending and reducing spending that adds nothing to your life.

I’m not really a concert-going guy (much to my wife’s distress), and although I don’t mind Eminem, I’m far from a fan.

If I spent half of my weekly earnings on a ticket to an Eminem concert, it is unlikely I’d get the same enjoyment as a true fan; for me, it would not be a great way to spend my money. My point is that, differ-

ent things are important to different people. What is important to me, may be a waste of money for someone else.

Our ongoing lifestyle is the biggest contributor to our overall happiness.

When we are developing a spending plan (we don’t call it a budget due to the negative feelings that word has with most people), we get our clients to outline what they deem as most important.

We ask our clients to nominate the three to five things they like to do each day, each week and each month. The theory being, if you are doing the things you deem most important each day, week and month; you are probably living a life that makes you happy. We allocate our income to these things first (along with our nondiscretionary spending to pay our bills and alike).

We then go further and nominate your medium and long-term goals and allocate some income to achieving these as well.

Some of those goals are not about longterm financial gain, they are likely to be things like overseas holidays or purchasing something you’ve always wanted.

This is using your income on meaningful spending and adding value to your life.

Developing a spending a plan and being aware of your spending habits, if done well, will improve your standard of living.

A budget need not be a belt- tightening exercise. It should be viewed as focusing on spending as much of your discretion-

Laos has suddenly become a tourism hotspot for adventurous Australians but Luang Prabang, Laos’ ancient capital, has been around for a long time. It has richly decorated temples, quaint French- Indochinese architecture, intriguing history, intense spirituality, and inviting cuisine.

The temples and monks Luang Prabang is the spiritual centre of Laos. You could easily while away hours admiring the ornate decoration on the wats. Some not to miss include Wat Visounnarath with its unusually shaped stupa, one of the oldest built back in 1512; gold- gilded Wat Xieng Thong where Lao kings were once coronated; and Wat Mai next to the Palace Museum, which was once the home of the head of Laotian Buddhism.

Every morning at sunrise, locals and some tourists line the streets to put offerings of sticky rice into bowls carried by saffron-robed monks. By giving food it’s believed that you “make merit”, which is carried over into the next life.

It’s quite common to see monks and young “novices” in saffron- coloured

robes casually walking the streets at other times of the day. Somehow this adds a special charm and provides a sense of peace and tranquillity for visitors.

The Royal Palace Built over a century ago in a French-Lao architectural style, the Royal Palace was created for King Sisavang Vong during the French colonial era. After the 1975 revolution, the complex was taken over by the government and later converted into the museum it is today. Inside the grounds you’ll see the king’s cars and a gold- gilded royal barge, while the main building has a throne room and more.

It is not in the same category as some of south- east Asia’s other palaces but it is worth taking a quick look.

Mount Phu Si This is a 150m high mountain boasting 360-degree views from the summit right in the middle of Luang Prabang. Like almost everything else in Luang Prabang these days, you need to pay to walk the few hundred steps to the top. It is beautiful at sunrise or sunset but it gets really crowded up there at sunset and some of the visitors who want to take photographs can be loud and pushy.

I prefer a quiet spot along the street closest to the Mekong River for sunset shots.

Markets It would not be south-east Asia without markets and Luang Prabang has them in abundance. It starts with the morning market which always commenced before I got up and finished by about 11am.

Nightly, local hill- tribe traders and others set up stalls along Sisavangvong Road. You can buy handicrafts and trinkets, silk scarves, elephant pants, other clothes, coffee beans, jewellery, and many other things. Haggling is required and you need to shop around for a reasonable price.

The Night Food Market is in a narrow lane towards one end of the Night Market.

It is lined with buffet-style food stalls piled high with local delicacies such as spicy noodles, tangy salads, barbecued meats and more. It can get very crowded but you can easily get a great meal for $4 then wash it down with a crisp Beer Lao. Getting there There are direct flights to either Bangkok or Singapore from Australia and onward flights from there to Luang Prabang. A visa is required to enter Laos but it can be obtained at the airport.

Creating a ‘smart home’ is not as daunting as you may think...

I’m often asked what sort of home setup I have. To gain perspective we are a family of four, with two children in university. We have over 15 devices connected to the Internet. These included our NAS Box, computers, laptops, gaming console, mobiles, tablets, Google Home, Google Chromecast, Wi- Fi light bulbs, Ring doorbell, Nest smoke detectors, smart plugs and televisions.

I have two dedicated Ubiquiti wireless access points at home. Once installed all the Internet dropouts and buffering issues we had disappeared. Before this, I was using the wireless that was on my Internet router; it was unable to handle the number of devices.

The heart of our setup is a Network Attached Storage (NAS) box. It handles the file storage/sharing. It is our home multimedia hub and allows viewing of photos, videos and music on all of our devices including our TV. We use a QNAP device for this.

We have two televisions – a Samsung Smart TV and an older television. An Amazon Firestick connected to the older TV allows us access to streaming

media platforms as well as catch up television. The Firestick plugs into the HDMI port of your TV and is the size of a USB stick.

Our Ring video doorbell is a wireless device that when rung, will also notify me on my phone. I can via my phone answer the intercom and see who is at the door and speak with them. It has motion sensors and will record (to our NAS) anyone walking to our door.

We also have some Nest Smoke Alarms. These notify on your mobile of any problems and will specifically tell you which area has the alert. The battery will last 10 years.

To look after our solar pool heating, I have a TP- Link smart switch. Using IFTTT (If This Then That) app, I have it set up to turn the solar on/off when the temperature goes above/below 28 degrees. IFTTT looks at the Bureau of Meteorology and when it reaches the required temperature sends a signal to the TP-Link switch.

Google Home can have many uses.

We have ours hooked up to Spotify and primarily use it to play music. We also use it to stream Spotify to other devices using the Chromecast. It also controls the smart lights.

Believing in God means you have faith that there’s more to life...

Not many will have heard of Bertrand Russell. He was an influential British philosopher and prominent atheist (that is, he did not believe in the existence of God).

In a 1948 radio interview Bertrand Russell said: “The universe is just there, and that’s all”.

Current day atheists like Richard Dawkins are quick to agree. This idea is becoming increasingly popular, as we are told by some, that belief in God is like “believing in fairies at the bottom of the garden”.

Yet, to take God out of the picture has all sorts of implications. Bottom line, it means we are simply a collection of molecules, thrown together at random.

Life is devalued and becomes meaningless, without direction or purpose, since we are no more than accidents of the evolutionary process who live and breathe and then die and that is all.

Now, that could be true, but to think like this means that life is boiled down to “eat and drink and be merry, for tomorrow you die... for dust you are and to dust you will return”.

God, in the Bible, speaks of something better.

In Genesis, the opening book of the Bible, we read how men and women are made “in the image and likeness of God”.

People are special; unique. Life is a gift from God meant to be lived in friendship and relationship with Him. This was the purpose behind Jesus’ mission while here on Earth. Because Jesus highly valued people, he gave his life so that any person who would turn to him would be saved and enjoy friendship with God. This is great news!

As you hear the voice of those who say something different, remember, “You are more than what they say”.

enrith have got off to a mixed start to the year following the opening weekend of the 2019 Basketball NSW Waratah League competition.

Penrith’s Waratah Championship League (WCL) Men’s team were the pick of the bunch, defeating the Sutherland Sharks in a thriller last Saturday 83-82.

The Panthers shot 41 per cent in the tight encounter, with small forward Sean Weekes leading all scorers with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Power forward Viliami Foketi followed closely behind with 22 points, while captain Ben Kearins scored 15 points including two from three- point land.

Panthers WCL men’s coach Jeff Kilbourne said his skipper was clutch, scoring the winning free throws to seal the game.

“Ben got two free throws with six seconds to go to win by one,” he said.

“We were down by one point, so I drew a sideline play with six seconds remaining and Ben got the foul call. He iced the game for us with two very stressful free throws.”

Despite the close finish, Kilbourne said he was very pleased with his side’s character during the match.

year, so it was a good sign that we have grown as a group,” he said.

Penrith’s WCL women weren’t as successful during their opening round match against the Sharks, going down 82-72 at Sutherland Basketball Stadium.

The Panthers shot just 35 per cent in the 10- point loss, with Sarah Matthews top scoring with 22 points including five from three-point territory. Teammate Meg Jefferson followed closely behind with 21 points and a whopping 12 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League Men’s team got their season off to a hot start, smashing the Sutherland Sharks 94-62 last Saturday afternoon.

Last year’s Grand Finalists were more than impressive, with Kevin Achampong recording a team-high 18 points including two three-pointers.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a positive start to the year for Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League Women’s team after they went down to the Sharks 68-52.

Penrith’s Taylor Newbould scored 16 points in the 16-point defeat, while Mollie Pennay notched up 14 points.

All four teams will play their first home games of the season when they all face sides from the Newcastle Hunters at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Stadium in Cambridge Park on Saturday.

The WCL Women’s team will tip- off at 3pm followed by the WCL Men at 5pm.

Nepean Ducks prepare to launch new women’s team NATHAN TAYLOR

F

ollowing several years growing the men’s version of the game, the Nepean Ducks are officially recruiting for their first ever women’s team for the upcoming 2019 Gridiron NSW season.

The club are currently on the hunt for women over the age of 16 to be a part of a brand new era at the Ducks.

Nepean Ducks President, Darren White, said the club’s had interest in fielding a women’s team for many years.

“We’ve thought about having a women’s team for the last few years but we weren’t able to lock down a coach until now,” he told the Weekender.

“We managed to secure Miro Williams as our head coach of the new women’s team, his experience in gridiron is a huge asset to our organisation.

“Gridiron NSW offer three divisions – Men’s, Colts and Women’s – and we want to field teams in all three.”

The Ducks have already been inundated with solid interest from local women wanting to try something new. White said no experience is necessary but former rugby league or touch football players will have an advantage.

“Ex- footy players will transition easier into the game but we’ll accept anyone – anyone that wants to have a go,” he said.

“We are currently recruiting now but the season won’t start until the end of August.

Because gridiron is complicated to learn, our coach wants to start getting into the fundamentals as soon as possible.”

Last year the Gridiron NSW women’s competition featured five teams from across NSW and the ACT, this year that number is expected to grow with three new clubs planning to introduce a women’s side.

White said it’s great to see so much excitement around the women’s game.

“This year there is increased interest, everyone in the league wants to grow the women’s side of the game,” he said.

“If there’s three more teams, it will make for quite a good competition for the women.”

The Nepean Ducks will hold their first training session for their new women’s team this Monday, March 18 at Cranebrook Oval.

allacia Golf Club recently hosted the second Western Sydney Region Veteran Golfers Association (WSRVGA) event for 2019, with Wallacia’s members totally dominant on their home course.

A full field of 144 players greeted the starter in sunny autumn weather, but once the starter’s hooter sounded, Wallacia members raced away from the field.

Not only did Wallacia take out the Club event, they also won the 2BBB Medley, the A-Grade Singles and B-Grade Singles,

to lock up a large share of the major prizes.

The members of the winning Wallacia team were Dave Shearer, Graham Anderson, Paul Williams and Martin Berg.

The next Veterans event will be the upcoming NSWVGA Stroke- Play Championships, which will be played at Richmond, Glenmore Heritage Valley and Stonecutters Ridge golf clubs from March 25 to 27, with the current list of entries just over 130 in a capacity 144-man field.

The next WSRVGA Inter- Club will be held on May 8 at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club.

Wanderers find their feet

fter a horror start to the year, the Western Sydney Wanderers have turned their fortunes around, now unbeaten in their last four games.

Western Sydney’s latest win was a 4- 1 thumping of Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium last Friday night.

Despite falling behind to an early goal

by Brisbane’s Dylan Wenzel- Halls, the Wanderers scored three times before the break to record one of their best wins of the year.

Marquee man Oriol Riera scored a double in the thrashing, while Mitch Duke and Roly Bonavacia also made it onto the scorer’s sheet.

While a spot in the Finals is still well out of the equation (currently 10 points behind sixth), the Wanderers are finally giving their fans something to cheer for.

Speaking after the match, Wanderers coach Markus Babbel was proud of how his team have responded since their heavy defeat at the hands of Newcastle back in Round 17.

“I said with 10 games to go that we can’t

Despite sitting towards the tail end of the A- League ladder, the Wanderers are currently second in the competition for shots (336).

Babbel said he always knew his side had points in them but they had to focus on their defence in late game situations.

“Of course, it was a frustration because there weren’t many games where we didn’t have a chance,” he said.

“A lot of games we had a lot of opportunities to win but we couldn’t take it out and now we are taking our chances and, if you get one or two up, it is more difficult to come back and we get more confident.

“I think that was the biggest problem to begin… we couldn’t score and if we did start scoring we conceded too many and now there is a much better balance in our game, we defend well… now we start to score again and then comes the result.”

The Wanderers will travel across the ditch this weekend to take on Wellington this Sunday.

The Phoenix will be out for more blood this St Patrick’s Day after belting the Central Coast Mariners 8-2 last Saturday.

The large deficit saw the Mariners sack their coach just hours later.

AFLW: The GWS Giants have now lost two straight games, hammered by the Adelaide Crows 59-27 last Sunday afternoon. The 32-point loss ends the Giants’ chances of making the Finals for the first time in history. The match was close for the first three quarters but the Crows booted four goals in the last term to seal their fifth-straight victory. The Giants will look to finish the 2019 AFLW season on a high when they take on Geelong in Canberra tonight.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Round 5 of the NSWRL Junior Representative season got underway last weekend with awful results for Penrith’s SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams. In the SG Ball competition, Penrith were beaten

by Illawarra 12-8, while in the Harold Matthews competition, Penrith went down to the Steelers 28-22. Meanwhile, Penrith’s Tarsha Gale Cup side were also defeated at the hands of Illawarra 28-16.

This Saturday, all three Panthers teams will look to bounce back when they battle the Canberra Raiders at St Marys Leagues Stadium.

A-LEAGUE: The Western Sydney Wanderers have signed defender Giancarlo Gallifuoco as an injuryreplacement player for midfielder Jordan O’Doherty. O’Doherty injured his ACL during the first half of the Wanderers’ Round 20 clash against Perth Glory.

Former Australian U23 Gallifuoco will link up with the Wanderers for the remainder of the season following his recent departure from Serie C side FC Rieti. The 25-year-old returns to Australia having spent the last three years in Europe with English sides Torquay United and Dover Athletic, as well as FC Rieti.

CRICKET: Penrith have smashed Dave Warner and his Randwick Petersham teammates in Round 16 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a One-Day match at Coogee Oval, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. Penrith put up a tremendous innings, completing the 50 overs with 5/313. Ryan Hackney was huge for Penrith, scoring 127 while Cameron Weir was outstanding on 89. When Randwick Petersham hit the crease later that day, they were unable to get close to Penrith’s target, scoring 8/219 before stumps. Ryan Smith was best with the ball taking 3/37. Penrith finished the regular season in second position and will face crosstown rivals Parramatta at Howell Oval this weekend in the Qualifying Finals.

lympians, world champions and high performing archers descended upon Victor Harbor in South Australia last week for the National Matchplay Series Final and Australian Open.

Doing her local area proud, Penrith City archer Madeline Boyle made the trip down south.

After attending three of the six events across Australia, the 18-year-old made the cut for the Victor Harbor Finals.

“I’ve been training really hard for this event.

For the first time last year I competed at the Open Nationals in Victoria and won the Best All-Round Compound award,” Boyle said.

“The National Matchplay Series was another way for me to test that I can really stand up to the best in Australia and prepare myself for international competitions.”

Boyle went on to win the event, defeating close rival Jessica Sutton to take out the title of Australian Compound Women’s Champion.

Boyle’s team, which included Tasmania’s Anna Walls and Victoria’s Niamh Jones, also won gold at the Australian Open the day prior.

“Archery NSW is very pleased with Madeline’s results,” Archery NSW Vice President, Kim Lavender said.
