anta’s real life elves have been busily making toys for children in their Penrith workshop.

The Penrith Community Men’s Shed have spent the last six months hand crafting toys to spread the Christmas cheer to our local kids.

On Wednesday, members hand delivered a range of toys to the Nepean Hospital’s Children’s Ward, and brightened up the day of a number of sick children.

Men’s Shed member, Peter Greenhalgh, said the toys were ready just in time for Christmas.

“When we made the toys the plan was to bring them up here at some time, and it happened to be perfect timing for Christmas,” he said.

“The whole point of it was to give the kids a gift, and give them something to cheer them up.”

Mr Greenhalgh said the Penrith Community Men’s Shed spent almost half of the year making the little pick-up trucks and their trailers.

“We made them in bulk, but it took a while because we had to cut them out, then we had to sand them, paint them, wait for them to dry then paint them again,” he said.

“Someone made all the wheels, then we bought the dowel for the axles. We’ve got one guy who is vision impaired who paints them, and Kenny does a lot of the painting too.”

According to Mr Greenhalgh, each truck would take several days to build if they were made one by one.

“If you were to just go from scratch I’d say it would take a couple of days to make them. We are

“But, it gave us something to do and we thought it would be good to give out to the community.”

Mr Greenhalgh, Kenneth Richards, Victor Sultana and Neil Checkley handed out the toys to children like four-year-old Liam, who had been in hospital since Sunday.

The extreme generosity of the Penrith Community Men’s Shed was certainly welcomed by the kids in hospital and their parents.

Many in the Children’s Ward are facing the prospect of spending the holidays in hospital.

The initiative also gave the Men’s Shed members an opportunity to give back to the community that has given them so much over the years.

T

he selection of the Labor Party’s Federal Election candidate has not worried sitting Lindsay MP Fiona

Scott.

On Saturday, Penrith local Emma Husar defeated Ross Beaton 46 to 30 in a Labor Party preselection, but Ms Scott dismissed concerns, and said she will focus on her work in Lindsay.

“Labor’s candidate selection is a matter for Labor,” she said.

“Attaining a commitment to upgrade The Northern Road is but one example where I’m making a real difference for people.

“I remain focused on the interests and needs of representing and delivering for the people of Lindsay, which includes the $3.6 billion infrastructure package.”

Ms Husar has some work to do to get ahead of Ms Scott, who uprooted former sitting Labor MP, David Bradbury, in the 2013 election with a 4.11 per cent swing in two party preferred votes.

It’s the second consecutive year Ms Husar faces an election, but failing to remove Stuart Ayres from the seat of Penrith at the State Election earlier this year hasn’t

knocked her down. In fact, it has made her more determined.

“Every election is tough but I’ll be working hard to demonstrate a strong voice for the hard working people of Lindsay, for families, for the future of our country and for fairness,” she said.

“From now until whenever the next election is held, I’ll be working tirelessly to demonstrate to the people of Lindsay that Labor represents an opportunity for change in our area – a real choice to vote to bring back the fair go.”

Ms Husar said she is looking forward to getting back out there and listening to locals about issues that matter to them.

“I have a long association with our community and a passion for our people,” she said.

“A number of residents have voiced their concerns about a 50 per cent increase to the GST on everything whilst tax dodging multinationals are let off the hook.

“Also, they have raised concerns about the threats to their penalty rates and take home pay; and concerns with the extent of the Abbott/Turnbull Government’s cuts to local schools and health care providers.”

At this stage, the Federal Election is expected to be held in September next year.

oday marks the final edition of The Western Weekender for 2015.

What a year it has been in Penrith.

A State Election came and went, with Prue Car entering Parliament for the first time after winning the seat of Londonderry, while Stuart Ayres and Tanya Davies retained Penrith and Mulgoa respectively.

On the news front, it was a year where Penrith’s growth was at the forefront of the agenda, particularly surrounding the new airport at Badgerys Creek.

Issues surrounding the city’s growth, such as parking in the CBD and new infrastructure, dominated discussions.

On the sporting front, it was a year to forget for the Panthers, who fell victim to a horror injury run that saw the team fail to reach the heights of 2014.

In the aftermath, the Panthers cut ties with superstar centre Jamal Idris and coach Ivan Cleary as they look for a fresh approach in 2016.

Through the many thousands of stories that the Weekender runs in any given year, you get a real sense of both the good and bad that exists in this city.

You also learn that the good will always outweigh the bad and that the spirit, strength and resilience of this community will always shine through.

What 2016 brings is anybody’s guess, but it will be a huge a news year with a Federal Election and Council elections both taking place.

It’s an Olympic year, and we’re all wondering if Jess Fox will go one better than her silver medal back in 2012.

Whatever the year brings, we’ll be here to bring you every moment of it.

Helping locals in need this Christmas Busy time for Salvation Army as financial struggles come to the fore

hile many families will be sitting down to a Christmas breakfast and watching each other unwrap presents next Friday, other families in the local area will not be so fortunate.

The Salvation Army expects to help around 300,000 Australians doing it tough this Christmas, with around 100,000 food vouchers and hampers to be distributed and over 10,000 meals served to those in need.

Salvation Army Penrith Manager, Sharon Tolliday, said every year the needs of people just grow bigger.

“It’s absolutely devastating,” she said.

“It’s unbelievable how many families need help around this time of year. We get 10 to 15 calls in a day, and people are always coming in off the street.”

The Salvos will also hand out over 500,000 gifts and toys with the help of the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal.

“Our store is extremely busy at this time of year with people looking for bargains and ways to save,” Ms Tolliday said.

A recent survey commissioned by The Salvation Army revealed that over 2.7 million people aged between 18 and 64 say they know at least five families who

Penrith: Four men arrested in relation to drug supply

Four men have been arrested with a range of offences relating to the supply of drugs.

Police executed two search warrants in Torton Place in Penrith last Thursday, December 10.

A 51-year-old man was charged with 14 offences relating to ongoing drug supply, possession of child abuse material, firearm offences, traffic offences, and dealing with proceeds of crime.

Three men were also charged in relation to alleged ongoing drug supply offences; with a 58-year-old man charged with 11 counts, a 38-year-old man charged with two counts, and a 30-year-old man facing four counts, as well as dealing with proceeds of crime.

All men were refused bail and were due to appear in court last Friday, December 11.

A woman has been charged with shoplifting after she was caught by loss prevention officers last week.

At about 12.15pm on Friday, December 11, the 22-year-old entered a variety store on High Street in Penrith and allegedly took a number of items before attempting to walk out of the store.

The woman was detected by loss prevention officers.

The woman, from Doonside, was charged with ‘shoplifting’ and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on January 8, 2016.

Penrith: Teenager found with ecstasy tablets in backpack

A man has been charged after he was allegedly found with a significant amount of tablets, believed to be ecstasy.

At about 10.50pm on Saturday, December 12, police stopped a 19-year-old man in Woodriff Street in Penrith.

After a discussion, police believed they had cause to search him and his backpack.

Officers allegedly found a significant amount of tablets in his backpack and he was taken to Penrith Police Station.

He was charged with ‘supply prohibited drug’.

The man, from Cranebrook, is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on January 18.

Emu Plains: Woman arrested after refusing to leave club A woman was taken away in a police car last week after allegedly repeatedly refusing to leave a licensed premises.

At about 9.40pm on Friday, December 11, police officers were called to a registered club on Leonay Parade in Emu Plains after reports of a woman who wouldn’t leave the premises.

It’s alleged she was asked to leave, which she did before she re-entered the club.

She was asked to leave again but didn’t go quietly. Police made the decision to arrest her and she was given a Field Court Attendance Notice.

She allegedly abused other patrons and lashed out at police.

She was charged with a range of offences including ‘resist arrest’ and ‘assault police’.

The 31-year-old, from Emu Plains, is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on January 7.

Can business crawl out of trouble?

“It’s quite upsetting, especially near Christmas time, with a baby on the way and a four-year-old, to be told your purchases are sitting there and the money is there but there is nothing that can be done right now.”

A meeting with the creditors is scheduled for next week, with Cor Cordis explaining it’s still very preliminary at this stage.

“It’s too early to tell exactly what the financial position of the company is but hopefully by the end of January, when another meeting will be held with creditors, it will be pretty obvious by then,” the spokesperson said.

Cor Cordis will be investigating the circumstances around the collapse of My Baby Warehouse and will look into several options.

Whether or not the Batt Street store in Penrith survives is uncertain.

“It could be that My Baby Warehouse will close its doors, we might recommend to sell it to another operator or competitor, or we might re-finance it and trade it as voluntary admin until it trades its way out,” the spokesperson said.

It’s understood staff are unaffected at this stage with trading still continuing.

he future of the My Baby Warehouse store in Penrith is uncertain after it entered voluntary administration late last week.

Administrator Cor Cordis was appointed to My Baby Warehouse stores across Sydney, with the company explaining they plan to keep trading for now.

“The company will continue to trade for now but whether that changes or not is unknown at this stage,” a spokesperson for Cor Cordis told the Weekender.

“The financial position needs to be reviewed, which is still in the very early stages, and then they can decide what they are going to do with the business.”

Customers are unhappy, with lay-by purchases and gift cards not being honoured at this stage, with the potential for consumers to lose their deposits.

Melissa Smith, of Oxley Park, has a current lay-by worth $700 that includes a pram and bassinet, with $400 already paid towards it.

Her baby is due on January 26.

Baby assault case: More charges JADE ALIPRANDI

23-year-old man has had further charges laid against him and remains behind bars after he allegedly burned a 10-month-old baby boy last month.

The man was charged with five additional offences including ‘cause grievous bodily harm with intent’, ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’, and three counts of ‘common assault’.

He was initially charged with ‘recklessly inflict grievous bodily harm’.

The horrific incident happened on Sunday, November 23, at a home on Castlereagh Street in Penrith.

The man allegedly put the 10-month-old baby into the shower and turned only the hot water tap on before he left the room to put his phone on charge and have a cigarette.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics called for police assistance when they were treating

the 10-month-old baby for severe burns to his head, neck, chest and back.

The baby was also suffering significant head and facial injuries.

The 23-year-old appeared at Penrith Local Court on Monday, December 14, where he was refused bail to appear again in February.

The man is not the baby’s biological father but had been in a relationship with the mother for up to five months.

The baby remains in hospital.

Huge new expo coming to Penrith Huge growth expected in the western Sydney region in the next few years has encouraged many of the country’s largest equipment suppliers to band together to showcase the latest in earthmoving and construction machinery.

In April 2016, the Panthers Leagues Club will host the Diesel, Dirt & Turf Expo which will transform its pavilion and grounds into an exciting display of many of the world’s major equipment brands.

Confidence in the success of the event is high, with Panthers and the Expo signing off to stage Diesel, Dirt & Turf for the next three years.

Car destroyed Police are appealing for public assistance after a car was found alight in Colyton on Wednesday morning.

Just before 1.30am on Wednesday, emergency services were called to Sykes Place following reports of a car on fire.

Fire & Rescue NSW officers attended to the fire, however the Holden Commodore sedan was destroyed.

10 residents inside the home immediately adjacent to the car, as well as several nearby neighbours were evacuated as a precaution.

Initial inquiries suggest the fire was deliberately lit.

As investigations into the circumstances leading up to the incident continue, police are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with information, to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.

Toilets at the Glenmore Park Sportsfield are one step closer to construction, with the selection of a tenderer for the scope of works.

The $1.3 million Glenmore Park Sportsfield Stage 2 project will be undertaken by Springwood business, Alpall Builders Pty Ltd. The company will construct amenities buildings, a covered area, tiered seating, sewer encasement, a shed, minor landscaping and concrete work.

The tendered price exceeds the funds available from Council, and a further $100,000 will be taken from an alternate fund.

The works will be of great benefit to Glenmore Park residents.

Penrith Council is providing extra bin collections this Christmas to allow households to cope with any extra waste during the festive period. Council will provide two weeks of extra collections from 25 December to 7 January 2016 when residents can place all bins kerbside for weekly collection.

New in blue: Luke starts work

Thornton transformation continues Station plaza opened, with major retail precinct set to launch in 2018 DALE DRINKWATER

ith shelter, seating and palm trees, the Thornton station plaza is now connecting one of Penrith’s newest suburbs to the city centre.

The plaza forms part of seven hectares of public open space just north of Penrith Station, and was officially opened on Tuesday by Urban Growth NSW and Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres.

UrbanGrowth NSW CEO, David Pitchford, said Thornton has delivered major transport oriented urban renewal outcomes for Penrith with features such as the plaza.

“UrbanGrowth NSW is proud to have developed this landmark project for western Sydney,” he said.

The plaza boasts a sandstone feature wall and an inground lighting installation adjacent to a future retail precinct.

UrbanGrowth NSW’s Head of Western Sydney Projects, Matthew Beggs, said the future retail precinct will have a full size supermarket, specialty stores and cafes by 2018.

“We started construction in late 2012 and have provided 2000 homes, seven hectares of public domain, and begun construction on a retail site,” he said.

New police recruit Luke Burley t Marys Police Station has welcomed a new recruit to the ranks this week.

22-year-old Luke Burley started at the station on Tuesday and said he was ready to start work.

“I’m really looking forward to getting out into the community and seeing what’s on offer,” he said.

Mr Burley said the process of becoming a police officer wasn’t an easy one.

Students at the Academy go through the first three months in a classroom to learn everything there is to know about policing and then spend the remaining seven months in safety training with a little more hands on learning required, all of which Mr Burley said was worth it.

Mr Burley will be working through the Christmas period with a ‘buddy’ who he was assigned to this week as a mentor for his first weeks on the job.

“I wanted a job where every day there would be something different – I didn’t want to be stuck in an office five days a week so I’m glad I’m here now,” he said.

Skate park upgrade gets thumbs up Work to begin in new year to revitalise run down ‘Snake Pit’ in St Marys thanks to new funding DALE DRINKWATER

he St Marys community will soon be able to have a BBQ in the shade at Monfarville Reserve’s ‘Snake Pit’ skate bowl. $35,000 worth of upgrades will be made possible through the Londonderry electorate’s allocation of funding in the Community Building Partnership program.

Accepting a cheque for the works last week, Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said she was delighted this funding was secured to improve the area for locals. “The reason we submitted this application was because there had been quite a strong push from local residents to renew that area,� she said. “Our community is an active, adventurous one and as such are always striving to improve our parks and reserves. This funding is most welcome for this popular reserve.�

Upgrades for the area will include new seating, shelters and BBQs, that Cr McKeown said is urgently needed. “It is used by the community a lot, especially during the school holidays and on weekends, so revitalising that area will reactivate the area,� she said.

“We can see it is in desperate need of an upgrade. Residents will soon be able to relax, sit and watch. Parents can take their kids down and have a skate, and even go down for a picnic and use the new BBQs.�

Cr McKeown said the costings have already been done, but Council will contribute to the project if there are any unforeseen blow outs. “It will all be on hold until the New Year and then it will be full steam ahead and Council will put together a project plan,� she said. “We’re hoping this will run to plan and come to fruition sooner rather than later.�

State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car presented the $35,000 to Cr McKeown at the skate park, that was riddled with graffiti. “This much needed funding will be provided to Penrith City Council to improve the skate bowl as well as provide seating and other amenities,� she said. “This is a huge win for local families and clubs who use the park, particularly on weekends.�

The funding is just a fraction of the $300,000 worth of projects granted to the Londonderry electorate under the Community Building Partnership program.

ustralia has remembered the tragic scenes at Sydney’s Martin Place one year after Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson tragically lost their lives at the hands of a deranged killer.

The 17-hour siege at the Lindt Chocolate Cafe changed lives forever, including those of Emu Plains residents Louisa Hope and her mother Robin, who survived the ordeal.

On Tuesday, thousands of people joined a twilight ceremony to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy.

The sea of flowers left by mourners following the Martin Place siege is at the heart of a permanent memorial to honour those who lost their lives.

“This tragic event changed our city and we will forever feel the loss of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson as we go about our daily lives,” NSW Premier, Mike Baird said this week.

“This enduring memorial is intended to pay tribute to the victims and survivors who, by sheer chance, were caught up in that dreadful day.

“We have worked closely with the Dawson and Johnson families to choose a

“The design concept creates a quiet, reflective and symbolic memory of the floral tributes left in the days following the siege, while working with the functional surroundings of the very busy pedestrian area that Martin Place is,” Professor Johnson said.

“It is appropriate that the memory of this community spirit live on here in Martin Place. Professor Johnson has created a symbolic commemoration of our shared grief which recalls the courage of those involved in the siege,” he said.

Louisa Hope, the Emu Plains resident who survived the siege along with her mother Robin, has been a brilliant example of not letting the tragedy define her or her future.

“I think that I will always have that gratitude in my heart that my mother and I both survived, but that’s tempered with the grief of losing two from those amongst us,” she told ‘60 Minutes’ last weekend.

“At the time I remember very vividly that our country was on a knife’s edge and I just thought we had to find a way to get something good out of that wickedness, that evil, and that because I survived, it was up to me.”

Aussies want better Christmas gifts Research reveals most of us are disappointed with the presents we receive from family and friends JADE ALIPRANDI

A new survey has found that two-thirds of Australians expect better Christmas gifts than the ones they receive from friends and family.

Often people feel they have to smile and say thank you when really, it might not have been a gift they needed or wanted in the first place.

Social network site for local communities, www.nabo.com.au, surveyed 1000 Australians and found that 66 per cent don’t like the Christmas gifts they receive.

The top five worst gifts Australians receive at Christmas time are novelty or statement t-shirts, ‘boring’ movies and documentaries, toiletry packs, socks, and poor fitting or unfashionable clothing.

One third of respondents also admit to trying to get refunds on diet or self-help books while almost 40 per cent re-gift boxes of chocolate.

However, half of the respondents will often keep tupperware and cleaning products, even if they don’t like them.

More than 6000 homes and businesses were without power on Wednesday morning after a freak storm hit the Penrith area.

Westfield Penrith was forced to close stores and evacuate Christmas shoppers due to the power outage.

Penrith Courthouse and Penrith Council were also without power, while dozens of traffic lights across the local area were out, causing problems on the roads.

Penrith managed to avoid the worst of the storm, however, with wind gusts of more than 200km/h experienced in suburbs such as Kurnell. Extensive damage occurred throughout Sydney.

Chamber chips in $5000 Golf Day raises important funds for Family Room at Nepean Hospital JADE ALIPRANDI

he Ronald McDonald Family Room at Nepean Hospital was presented with a cheque to the tune of $5000 this week from the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The $5000 was raised at the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Golf Day and Luncheon, held in October at Penrith Golf Club.

Now in its fifth year, General Manger of the Chamber of Commerce, Kerrie Reeder, said it was one of the most successful yet.

“Over 25 people sponsored holes, gold members sponsored the event and it was great to see so many businesses on the day participate,” Ms Reeder said.

“Without the local support we wouldn’t have had such a successful day.”

The Ronald McDonald Family Room – Nepean offers a warm and inviting place to parents whose children are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Parents are able to go into the quiet and private space to make phone calls, be with their other children or to simply make a coffee, take a quick breather and recharge.

Get ready to spend Aussie shoppers are tipped to spend $2.3 billion nationwide on Boxing Day 2015, according to the Australian Retailers Association (ARA), with a total of $16.8 billion to be spent from December 26 to January 15, 2016.

Post-Christmas spending estimates by the ARA and Roy Morgan Research indicate sales will be four per cent higher than the same period last year, evidence of Australia’s growing love affair with bargains.

“Pre-Christmas 2015 saw record sales at retail stores, and we’re expecting to see a very similar growth story play out in the post-Christmas sales,” said Russell Zimmerman from the ARA.

“We love being able to present this kind of money to the Family Room because it’s a great space for people that have sick babies,” Ms Reeder said.

The sixth annual Golf Day will be held next year.

ollowing in the footsteps of his older brothers, Jack Karam has successfully completed primary school without missing a single day.

The Werrington resident was presented with a certificate of attendance at an assembly held last week at Penrith Public School, with his mother, Mirna, explaining how proud she is of him.

“I’m really proud of his effort to keep going to school,” she said.

“He wasn’t born here and for a while he didn’t really talk too much, especially in English, after coming from Lebanon – he was quite shy and still is a bit.”

Both of Jack’s older brothers haven’t missed a day of school with the eldest now in Year 10, and his other brother in Year 8.

“The kids have never really been sick or anything, otherwise I wouldn’t have sent them to school,” Mrs Karam said.

“They might have had the odd runny nose or two but they were never fully sick with the flu or anything which I think has to do with them just being great, healthy kids and eating right.”

Mrs Karam also puts Jack’s attendance record down to the support of his friends.

“Jack loves school and I think that’s got to do with his really great group of friends,” she said.

f you get on a Busways bus within the next week or so, don’t be surprised if you have Santa Claus driving you to your destination.

Busways Driver Terry Hession came up with the festive fundraising idea, now being run for the second straight year.

“I came up with the idea at Westbus and we transitioned it to Busways who were happy to take it on,” he said.

The thought came to Mr Hession when he decorated his bus by himself on a Saturday morning back in 2004

for the Christmas period, and now six air-conditioned buses are decked out at Busways Penrith.

“When I drive my bus dressed as Santa and have the decorations out and the Christmas lights on, everyone that gets on, young and old, always smile and that makes me feel great,” Mr Hession said.

Any money raised will be donated to Nepean Hospital and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The Busways team have all played their part in setting up the decorative buses.

“Busways fully support the idea, we think it’s great,” Senior Controller at Busways Penrith, George Pellatt said.

Jack said he was proud to have received the certificate of attendance.

“I was really happy with it and I think it’s really cool,” he said.

In addition, Jack’s two younger siblings, one going into Year 5 and the other going into Year 2, haven’t missed a day of school either.

The free Penrith Waste Champion app will tell you what bins you need to take out in your street and when, all at the touch of a button.

You simply enter your address into the app, accept push notifications, and it shows a colour-coded calendar of when your bins will be picked up.

Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, said the new app will help residents find out all they need to know about bins and waste services in the Penrith Local Government Area.

“It’s something pretty new that we’ve developed so that residents know when rubbish pick up is,” she said.

“It’s a handy little interactive app people can put on their phone for free, and if they want to sign up we can send them reminders about waste.”

The app will provide information about upcoming events like the Chemical CleanOut Event or E-Waste drop off day, and reminders about extra bin collections at Christmas and New Years.

“The app is especially handy around Christmas time when Council provides all those extra services, and then it changes back afterward,” Cr McKeown said.

The app is available on both Apple and Android devices by searching for ‘Penrith Waste Champion’.

Central park definitely needed We certainly do need a ‘central park’ precinct in Penrith (Council lays platform for development of central park, Weekender December 11). Hopefully it will block out a lot of High Street which needs to be ‘revamped’.

Are priorities right?

I am not so sure if this is a priority at this time or even a great use for this space.

We are running out of prime land/space in and near our city, and keeping in mind the growth of population expected in our region I just don’t understand why there has been no thought about creating jobs, i.e. office buildings, or even a business park such as Norwest Business Park. They could even offer incentives for businesses to relocate to Penrith. This will create local job opportunities not building more residential buildings, which all it does is create housing but where are these people going to work? Where are they going to park? For example the north side of the train station was prime land to build office buildings or a business park (not residential), right next to the train station.

This would have created and brought many job opportunities to Penrith and would have taken how many cars off the M4 as people wouldn’t have to drive to the city or Parramatta; but now they can

stay in Penrith to work. I just think we have a Council that is not keeping up with relevant issues. They keep talking about creating jobs, where are they? The only jobs created are whilst the residential buildings are being built. I sadly have to say that maybe we need new blood in the Council, with innovative thinkers.

I fully agree with your comments and hope this is not more ‘smoke & mirrors’ from Council. For example, in the past five years I’ve heard about so many ‘developments’ happening in Penrith. If we compare an aerial photo from 20 years ago to now, the only development you will clearly see is ‘residential urban sprawl’.

Although Thornton is looking good, it was the State Government that released the land with the last four sites selling this week to Urban Apartments. I have lost count of the number of times Council has stated that independent experts are providing a report into revitalising the Penrith CBD, what happened to Penrith Business Alliance when they didn’t see eye to eye with Council?

The Anytime team have been busy collecting toys for the second year in a row to pass on to Christ Mission Possible as a donation.

Not only did the organisation receive several basket loads of toys, but they also received a $2000 donation, thanks to the work CEO Martin Beckett put in over the last six months to lose weight through the gym.

“Christ Mission Possible carry out tremendous work within the community and do really well looking after the

homeless,” said Anytime Fitness Franchisee, Shane Casey.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to put just a few more smiles on people’s faces and build awareness of the organisation in the community.”

Mr Beckett and Anytime Fitness made a deal that for every kilo Mr Beckett lost, the gym would donate $100.

After losing 15 kilos, the team at Anytime Fitness decided they would donate $2000 to the organisation for Mr Beckett’s hard work.

“It’s great to just highlight the work that Christ Mission Possible do. It is incredible,” Mr Casey said.

“It gives me a great sense of achievement to be able to donate this kind of money to a charitable organisation.

“We are just a little piece of the pie assisting them and their great work.”

Penrith locals urged to help out during busy period

More than 350 blood donations are still needed from Penrith locals to cover the festive season.

Blood products are vital to the treatment of cancer patients and Penrith donors are among the millions of Australians taking holidays, leading to a worrying drop in donor numbers.

One product vital to cancer treatment, platelets, has a shelf-life of just five days, meaning cancer patients need a constant supply throughout the festive season, Penrith Blood Donor Centre Manager, Debbie Barwick, said.

“To ensure a constant and stable supply of blood we’re encouraging people to give blood between December 24 and January 1,” Ms Barwick, said.

“Over a third of all blood donations are used by cancer patients and are in such high demand they cannot be stockpiled, so a constant stream of donors is required between these dates.”

The Christmas and New Year ‘Blood Blitz’ was launched last week to help create awareness around the often low supply at this time of year.

“We are always encouraging new donors but sadly, it’s always the same three per cent of the population keeping supplies flowing,” Ms Barwick said.

“Donating blood means families can spend time together over Christmas.

“Not all of these donations are emergencies, but they do mean that cancer, and other, patients are well enough to spend Christmas with loved ones.”

It’s said that one in three Australians will need blood or blood products in their lifetime, with the festive season making it particularly busy.

he seemed confident when she first walked through the doors of her local TAFE campus, but Chantel’s bravado masked a history of setbacks and hardship.

As a young mum from a disadvantaged background, Chantel didn’t get the opportunity to reach her full academic potential at school.

But her young daughter was all the motivation Chantel needed to rise above the challenges she faced and seek help from TAFE. Enrolling initially in the Certificate III in Hospitality at Mount Druitt College, Chantel embarked on training to gain employment in a restaurant or club.

Seeing a diamond in the rough, Chantel’s teachers took her under their wings and provided training to suit her needs.

Presentation, language and social interaction skills were taught alongside hospitality skills.

Soon Chantel took on a whole new persona as she sought to behave in a respectful and professional manner.

She was shocked when, in return, customers spoke to her with respect and courtesy. Her teachers described this as an ‘a-ha’ moment in Chantel’s development.

“TAFE Western Sydney sees many students like Chantel, who, with guidance and support, make great gains for their futures by undertaking vocational training,” Ann Beerden, Manager Education, said.

Others come for job skills, to prepare for further studies or gain language, literacy or numeracy skills and many find a pathway for them to complete their desired university studies.

In 2016, TAFE Western Sydney is offering nationally recognised qualifications as well as fully subsidised part-qualifications and pre-apprenticeships in areas marked as a priority by the NSW Government.

At this time of year, it is good to take stock of what you’ve achieved over the past year. It can be easy for small business owners just to keep forging ahead and not take time to look back on what has happened.

Here are some steps to take before you launch into another year of business: 1. Reflect: What tasks did you complete, what goals were achieved or milestones reached?

What new processes or procedures did you put in place? What new products or services did you introduce?

Have there been staffing or contractor changes? Did you acquire new clients or customers?

Did you continue to build on relationships with existing clients? Was there anything unexpected that occurred?

What was your highlight of the year?

What was the low point of the year?

2. Evaluate: Once you have answered questions like the ones in the first point, it is important to evaluate what worked and what didn’t.

If you introduced some new procedures, evaluate if they were successful.

Check out your financials (with your accountant if need be) and use those reports to determine whether the changes you implemented had an impact on your profit (positively or negatively.

3. Plan: Importantly, you now need to take all the information you have gathered above and use it to effectively plan for the upcoming year.

There is no point continuing to do something that isn’t working.

And likewise, if you have discovered that something you are doing is working well, investigate ways you can capitalise on this.

Make sure that part of your planning also includes scheduling in regular breaks (both mini and longer).

In addition: take time to congratulate yourself (and your staff) on being in business for another year!

But also be specific in your celebrations: acknowledge individual and collective effort, and use the opportunity to build staff morale – or boost your own morale if you are a sole business owner!

Rather than viewing competitors as a threat, like most people would, see competitors as enriching opportunities to learn more about their industry and target market.

3. Everything requires effort.

Instead of looking for shortcuts, pour efforts into your business at every opportunity, and when you reach one

goal, plan another.

4. Perfection is the enemy of progress.

Young or inexperienced entrepreneurs get caught up in chasing their original vision that is almost perfect. But perfection isn’t necessary to run a successful, profitable business.

5. Big things are made from small components.

This works for problems as well as solutions. Successful entrepreneurs can break down massive projects, problems and campaigns into smaller, more manageable pieces.

6. Mistakes are healthy.

Successful entrepreneurs, even the rock stars among them, make mistakes often.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them.

7. There is no magic.

Successful entrepreneurs are just that because they poured years of effort and passion into a good idea, and eventually their efforts paid off.

8. Outside perspective is invaluable.

Seek advice often and don’t think you have all the answers. Entrepreneurs need to be good communicators.

he Australian Ballet has long been a jewel in the crown of Australian performing arts, entertaining audiences across the world since the company was

founded in 1962.

Now they’re targeting a new audience with the introduction of the Storytime Ballet series, created specifically for children.

“The Storytime Ballet series was developed in response to the overwhelming popularity of The Australian Ballet’s children’s programs and events,” Associate Producer and Tour Manager of Storytime Ballet, Tessa Kay said.

“There has been a significant growth in interest among families asking about

ballet events for children in recent years,” she added.

The first production in the series is one of the most loved fairytale ballets, ‘The Sleeping Beauty’.

The story follows the sleeping Princess Aurora as she wanders through the woods and discovers well known characters like Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and the Big Bad Wolf.

“The large-scale, elegant production will be packed with dazzling dancing, sparkling tutus and enchanting Tchaikovsky music,” Ms Kay said.

“It’s the perfect first ballet for children.”

Creating a ballet for a younger audience is no easy task. But the Australian Ballet has designed the new production to be an engaging and fun experience for children aged three years and up.

“The show will be live and interactive, the ballet will be under an hour in length and will showcase the talents of dancers from the Australian Ballet,” Ms Kay said.

“Children will have the opportunity to

learn about ballet in captivating pre-show activities and they will be encouraged to dress up in their favourite ballet-inspired outfits.”

‘The Storytime Ballet: The Sleeping Beauty’ opens in Melbourne this week and will be heading to the Evan Theatre for a run of shows from Tuesday, January 12 to Saturday, January 16.

The series is sure to be a hit with young dancers across the country.

“Over 420,000 children participate in dance activities across Australia every week,” Australian Ballet Executive Director, Libby Christie said.

“We hope to nurture our next generation of ballet lovers and who knows, even Principal Artists.”

The Australian Ballet is one of the busiest companies in the world with around 200 performances annually in cities including Tokyo, Paris, London and Auckland.

Ê Well, it’s that time of year again when I hand out my famous Chatter on the Box Awards for 2015. These awards dictate what I think have been the hits, misses and surprises of Aussie television in 2015.

I’ll also give you a run down of what new shows to look out for in 2016...

Ê Most Improved Channel: Channel Ten. After years in the scrapheap, Channel Ten well and truly made a comeback this year thanks to hugely popular shows like ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’, ‘Gogglebox’, ‘The Bachelor’, ‘The Bachelorette’ (pictured), ‘The Great Australian Spelling Bee’, ‘Shark Tank’, ‘Family Feud’ and ‘The Project’. Yes, they had some stinkers, but it was certainly a year to remember for this once troubled network. Ê Best Aussie Reality Show: ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’. Led by brilliant odd couple Julia Morris and Dr Chris Brown, ‘I’m A Celebrity’ certainly kicked off the year with a bang. It was a well known international franchise not many Aussies knew anything about, but we certainly fell in love with it from day one. I mean how good was it seeing Marcia Brady eating creepy crawlies! Ê Best Game Show: ‘Family Feud’. Now in its second year with Grant Denyer at the helm, ‘Family Feud’ is getting better and better with every episode, so much so they put it on Sunday nights as well. I can’t wait for ‘All Star Family Feud’ next year, it should be a blast. Ê Best Aussie Drama: ‘Love Child’. This show hit a whole new emotional level this year with several of the girls ready to

give birth to their babies. Cast members gave outstanding performances and new additions Tessa James and Matt Le Nevez were just as good.

Best Sporting Spectacle: The 2015 NRL Grand Final. How can you go past seeing one of the greatest footballers of our generation, Johnathan Thurston, win a Grand Final – and the circumstances he did it in made it even better. The Cowboys were down and out before some Thurston magic (and a dropped ball from Brisbane’s Ben Hunt) saw everyone’s second favourite team prevail.

Ê Best Television Innovation: Netflix.

Finally Australia got with the times, and we all signed up to Netflix. For years the United States were raving about this streaming service, and now I know why.

For less than $10 a month, users have ac-

cess to thousands of TV shows and movies. No wonder video stores are closing down nationwide… talk about value!

Ê Trapdoor Award: David Koch. It’s about time old mate Kochie walked along Martin Place and fell down a trapdoor never to be seen on TV again. It might sound mean but ‘Sunrise’ replaced Mel Doyle not too long ago and look how good that turned out. It’s time Sam Armytage has someone new and fresh by her side! Ê Worst Shows of the Year: There were plenty of shockers this year, here are just a few – ‘The Verdict’, ‘Married at First Sight’, ‘Restaurant Revolution’, ‘The Hot Plate’, ‘The Biggest Loser’. Ê Most Anticipated New Show: It has to be ‘Fuller House’, which will appear on Netflix early in the new year.

This new initiative from the gallery is a non-residential art camp where participants will spend three days exploring the world of art making.

The gallery’s Manager of Education Naomi McCarthy will lead the camp which has a toy theme and will explore the mediums of drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and assemblage sculpture.

Joining Naomi will be guest artists Freya Jobbins, David Capra and Rochelle Summerfield.

Freya will be helping the kids to create an assemblage sculpture made out of recycled toys, David will be making toyinspired wallpaper and Rochelle will conduct a drawing and collage workshop where people will be transformed into toys.

This is a great opportunity to help your kids explore their creativity and have a whole heap of fun this summer.

Penrith Regional Gallery’s kids summer art camp will be on from Wednesday, January 13 to Friday, January 15 from 10am to 3pm daily.

DVD Vacation

Rated MA // JADE ALIPRANDI If you thought the National Lampoon laughs were over, you’d be wrong.

Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) has grown up and now has a family of his own. You can probably guess where this is going!

His wife Debbie (Christina Applegate) and two sons James (Skyler Gisondo) and Kevin (Steele Stebbins) all agree that they are bored after going to the same cabin for their family holiday every year.

Rusty decides to recreate his childhood vacation and take his family to Walley World.

Just like the original ‘Vacation’ movies, the trip isn’t without its disasters along the way.

There are so many good and funny

things about this film that it’s hard to name just a few.

Chris Hemsworth did a great job in his role as Stone Crandall and for someone I have never seen in a comedic role before, played it out really well.

Rusty trying to be his son James’ wingman, the family in what they think is a hot spring, Kevin’s constant light-hearted picking on James, Debbie’s attempt at an old game from her sorority, the family going water rafting, and what happens when they actually make it to Walley World are all comedic gold.

From the opening scenes to the end credits, you will laugh, maybe until you cry, with this comedy that stands on its own while also paying tribute to

the original ‘Vacation’ movies. It’s out on DVD on December 23.

Cyrus

Self titled // KATE REID After taking out the 2015 season of ‘The X Factor’, fan favourite Cyrus has released his self titled debut album.

The release is mostly made up of songs from his on screen performances on the hit TV show.

Tracks include the haunting ‘Wicked Game’, a pretty impressive version of Adele’s hit ‘Rumour Has It’ along with other classic hits such as ‘In The Air Tonight’ and ‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door’.

The album also includes Cyrus’ debut single ‘Stone’ which topped the ARIA charts upon its release. It’s a pop anthem that gives listeners a hint at the direction he may take in the future.

While there’s no doubt that Cyrus is a talented vocalist, only time will tell if he has what it takes to climb to the top of talent show alumni heap.

The fight to save the penguins is on and only one animal can help.

He goes by the name of Oddball.

Off the coast from the small Australian town of Warrnambool lies Middle Island, a sanctuary once home to thousands of the world’s smallest penguins.

With the shallow channel to the island, foxes have quickly learned they can cross over to the penguins.

Unfortunately, with penguin numbers dwindling, the penguin sanctuary

will be closed if there are less than 10 penguins on the island on counting day.

A true story, the film has a slow start but if you hang in there, you won’t be disappointed.

Shane Jacobson gives another great performance to add to his resume as Swampy, grandfather to Olivia (Coco Jack Gillies).

Coco shines in the role and plays out the relationship between her character and Oddball beautifully.

Sarah Snook was also a stand out as Emily Marsh.

The way in which the movie is filmed is creatively inspired, minus the obvious green screen scenes, and really takes an Australian classic movie to another level.

It doesn’t shy away from tugging at the heart strings, like any movie about animals can do.

You might need the tissues handy, just in case.

It’s a sweet film and is definitely a family friendly hit, perfect for the kids!

Christmas is alive in St Marys It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, especially in St Marys where the annual Christmas tree lighting was held at Coachman’s Park last Friday evening.

The free family event offered plenty of festive activities for the whole family, including a jumping castle, snow dome, meet and greet with the Gingerbread Man, entertainment by Fairy Wishes and Britt Gleeson, reindeer food making, face painting, ballooning and, of course, a visit from Santa himself.

But the star of the show was the beautiful 20-foot Christmas tree which will light up the night sky until Monday, December 28.

This is only the second year for the event but it already appears to be a crowd favourite.

Fish and chips with tartare sauce Ingredients for fish • 12 flathead fillets, scaled with skin still on • 2 cups of plain flour • 1 cup of potato starch • 1/2 cup of pale ale • 2 cups of soda water • 1/2 cup of ice • 4ltrs grapeseed oil for frying

e admit to being somewhat blasé when it comes to medals, trophies and other gongs going to those in the winemaking industry, seemingly just about every maker we know winning something or other for one of their wines (at some time or other), and which makes us fear that if we mention one award we’re going to have to mention the lot – and that would take up our entire column every week of the year.

But we feel we should give recognition to one accolade that’s just been handed out as it’s a world first – and that we can give it mention because the wine’s sold out anyway. And that’s the Semillon Trophy at the 2015 International Wine and Spirit Competition that was won for an amazing fifth consecutive year by the Hunter Valley’s McGuigan Wines – the first time in history anyone’s achieved such a feat.

The record-setting 2015 winning drop was McGuigan’s 2006 Bin 9000 Semillon that Chief Winemaker, Neil McGuigan sums up as having been “a true Hunter style Semillon, fresh and light when young, and which will develop rich honey and toast characters with extended cellaring over the next 10+ years.”

One to note: Tintilla Estate, that proudly boasts to being the first in the Hunter Valley to plant Sangiovese vines – and that was back in the mid-90s – is earning a well-deserved reputation for the Rosé it makes from the fruit of these vines (pictured).

So much so in fact it has a wait-list each year of regular buyers, and this year had sold a third of anticipated production before the wine was even made!

1. First dust the fillet with the plain flour, make sure to season the flour.

2. Combine remaining flour and potato starch in a large metal bowl. Add beer, then add soda water until you get a thick ‘custard’ like consistency. Add ice, this helps keep the mixture cold to make it super crispy.

3. Fry the fish in batches in 175c oil, use a deep fryer or a really large saucepan, they should only take around two minutes each to be golden and crispy, leave on absorbent paper, do the fish before the chips as these chips only take seconds!

1. Peel the taro and using a mandolin slice into a thin julienne.

2. Fry for 30 seconds in 180c oil, season while hot. These are so much easier to get really crispy at home compared to potato chips.

Ingredients for tartare sauce • 2 cups of mayo (make your own or use ‘whole egg’) • 1/2 cup of cornichons – finely diced • 1/2 cup of caper – finely diced • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 tbsp of lemon zest • ¼ cup of Italian parsley – chopped finely 1. Combine all ingredients and season Serve the fish on top of the taro chips with a big dollop of tartare and a wedge of lemon!

In a sensational decision handed down in the Queensland Court of Appeal, the murder conviction of Gerard Baden-Clay in relation to the death of his wife Allison has been downgraded to manslaughter.

The case of Baden-Clay, who was accused of murdering his wife in a domestic dispute and later reporting her missing, has made national headlines over the past few years. After being convicted of murder in July 2014, this conviction has now been set aside, meaning that Baden-Clay must be

re-sentenced in relation to the offence.

This is not an uncommon scenario in criminal proceedings, whereby Prosecutors have difficulty proving murder, which requires an intent to kill, as opposed to manslaughter, which does not require the same intent.

This article examines the differences between manslaughter and murder under

New South Wales law.

A conviction of murder is a conviction for killing a person with the intent to kill and malice a forethought.

This means that to be convicted for murder, a person must have intended to end the victim’s life at the time that they took the actions that resulted in their death.

The maximum penalty for a murder charge in New South Wales is life imprisonment. The average sentence for murder cases in the mid-range of seriousness is approximately 20 years.

Possible defences to a murder conviction are selfdefence, where the action resulting in the death of the person were necessary to defend oneself; and duress, where a threat is made to the offender’s life or the offender’s family to the extent that the act of killing would be considered reasonable, or in some cases “necessity”.

The offence of manslaughter can be defined as a homicide without the intent to kill, or a homicide without reckless indifference to human life. This means that while a person may have performed the acts that resulted in a death, it cannot be proven that they intended to do so. The maximum penalty for manslaughter in NSW is 25 years.

Specific – make sure your resolution sets out exactly what you plan to do, ie – I will increase my daily vegetable intake by one serve each fortnight until I get to the recommended five serves a day Measurable – set a resolution that can be measured and find a fun way of tracking your progress Attainable/Realistic – these are by far the most important steps. Goals should be small, easily attainable and not too restrictive. It’s much more motivating to exceed your goal rather than struggling to achieve it.

Time – setting a time frame to reach your goal can be helpful but if you’re the kind of person who is likely to give up if you don’t achieve your goal in a certain amount of time, it may be best to skip this step No matter what your resolution remember not to be too hard on yourself.

Any improvement you make to your eating habits is a step in the right direction.

Think about what you’d like to improve in 2016 and set some realistic goals.

A recent study by Griffith University showed that children who swim demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than non-swimming children, indicating that swimming children may have many advantages when starting school.

“While we expected the children to show better physical development and perhaps be more confident through swimming, the results in literacy and numeracy really shocked us,” lead researcher Professor Robyn Jorgensen said.

arm, humid weather greeted new Penrith recruit Peta Hiku on Tuesday afternoon as he began his new life as a

Panther.

The former Manly Sea Eagles star and Kiwi international was a late, surprise inclusion to Penrith’s plans for 2016 after he inked a three year deal with the club late last week.

Hiku was released from his Manly contract two years early so the Sea Eagles could sign South Sydney Rabbitohs star back Dylan Walker.

The 23-year-old will be with the Panthers until the end of the 2018 season.

Hiku had a number of clubs chasing his services for next season and beyond but speaking at a media conference this week, the New Zealander said he was pleased and relieved to have his future sorted for the next three years.

“Penrith were a late inclusion in the negotiations but they were the best option for my family,” he told the Weekender.

“My partner is pregnant and we’re expecting a baby in June, so I thought it was the best thing for her and I.” Hiku began his career at the New Zealand Warriors (lower grades) before signing with Manly in 2013. He went on to play 61

first grade games for the club, scoring 28 tries and kicking three goals.

Classy in any position in the backline, Hiku even played five-eighth during New Zealand’s recent three Test series against England.

With Penrith losing superstar centre Jamal Idris this off-season, it’s expected Hiku will fill that vacant role that was causing new coach Anthony Griffin a headache.

“I think a big part of Gus getting me over was me having experience in the centres,” Hiku said.

“Gus spoke about the ANZAC Test quite a bit [where I played in the centres], and Penrith were lacking a left centre with

Jamal Idris gone, so he was really keen on me being an outside back here at the club, which I’m really looking forward to.”

With Manly blessed with an excellent fullback in Brett Stewart and two great centres in Steve Matai and Jamie Lyon, Hiku spent most of his time at the Sea Eagles on the wing.

“I wasn’t really a winger, I didn’t enjoy being on the wing,” he admitted.

“I suppose it was the right move for me going to a different club where they don’t have as much experience as Manly does in the backline.”

Hiku will spend the Christmas break moving his family from the Northern Beaches to Penrith.

Beginning at 9.30am at Blue Hills Oval in Glenmore Park, the Triple Threat T20 charity match will see three teams battling it out to win the first Violet Shield.

“The first team will bowl to the second team, the second team will bowl to the third team, and the third team will bowl to the first team. The highest scoring team will win,” Club Secretary and Violet’s uncle, Adrian D’Agostino said.

“Jason, Violet’s father will captain one team and my brothers, Jack and Chris, will captain the other two teams.”

Mr D’Agostino said it was a great chance to honour Violet Lee’s memory as well as raise some important funds.

“My sister, Kelly, didn’t want Violet Lee to be forgotten, so to be able to do something like this will ensure her memory lives on forever,” he said.

The club is hoping to raise $15,000 for SIDS and Kids as a result of the Boxing Day spectacle.

Locals are invited to come down and support the Violet Shield with lunch, games and activities for the kids as well as raffles and a silent auction also taking place.

Glenmore Park teenager becomes first Australian to win international event NATHAN TAYLOR

lenmore Park teenager Ethan McGuinness has been crowned world champion at the 2015 Trampoline Gymnastics World Age Group Competition.

The 14-year-old beat out a number of strong countries, including Great Britain and the United States, to take out the 13-14 boys tumbling event last week in Denmark.

Speaking with the Weekender from Denmark, Ethan said he was shocked to learn he had become the first Australian to win an international tumbling event.

“I felt very proud representing my country, and to be the first Australian tumbler to be world champion is very exciting,” he said.

While the Year 8 Xavier College student always dreamed of one day becoming world champion in his favourite sport, he never thought it would happen so soon.

“I thought one day I might have a chance to win but never did I think it would be this quick,” he said.

Brit Jaydon, Ethan McGuinness and Kaden Brown resident Jack Hemmings, 17, finishing fourth in the 17-18 men’s event while Castlereagh youngster Sophie Wilson, 12, finished ninth in the 11-12 girls event.

All three train at Windsor’s Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance, with tumblers judged on their execution and degree of difficulty throughout the competition.

“The kids’ success is due to the strong team between parents, athletes and their amazing coach Dzmitry Kachan,” Ethan’s mum, Tracey McGuinness said.

Ethan finished on top of the podium with 33,400 points with Brit Jaydon Paddock in second on 33,200 points and American Kaden Brown in third on 33,000 points.

Success for Penrith trio on the grand stage at Tag World Cup NATHAN TAYLOR

hree Penrith locals have returned from the 2015 Tag World Cup on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast as world champions.

Held earlier this month, the Tag World Cup featured nations from all around the world including Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Islands.

Tim Bailey and Dean Murphy successfully coached the Australian U16’s girls team to World Cup glory – going through the entire tournament undefeated.

The team, which included Penrith local Ashlee Harrison as vice captain, were unstoppable during the pool phase knocking off the Niue, Cook Islands, Australian Barbarians and Australian Indigenous teams along the way.

Australia were up against old foes New Zealand in the Grand Final, where they prevailed 6-3 in a physical battle.

Speaking with the Weekender, coach Bailey said he was surprised to see his talented group of girls go undefeated.

“I expected the girls to do really well but to go undefeated is a massive achievement, especially at a World Cup,” he said.

The 41-year-old Glenmore Park local said he was very emotional watching his young side soak up the win.

Penrith’s successful trio from the girls brought me to tears... it was very good,” Bailey said.

Topping off the weekend for Bailey and his co-coach Dean Murphy was the honour of being presented with awards for their service to Australian OzTag. Bailey was recognised as a player and coach while Murphy was recognised as an international referee and coach.

“Both Dean and I received a certificate of recognition to service to the sport, which was unexpected,” Bailey said.

“We’ve both been doing it for the love of it but to get some recognition was a great surprise for the both of us.”

RUGBY: Penrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu has announced he is leaving the club after three seasons.

Regarded as one of the toughest jobs in Australian sport, Tu’ipulotu joined the Emus in 2013 with hopes he could turn the battling club around.

While he may have only led the Emus to a handful of victories in his three year tenure, it was his commitment and dedication to the club that he’ll most be remembered for. “As head coach of the last three years it has been very challenging and an experience that has made me a stronger person and a better coach,” he said.

“I would like to thank a lot of people who have endured countless hours, time and effort in making a pathway for the talented players of the west.”

In September, the Emus announced that former Wallaby Jeremy Paul was joining the Emus coaching staff to coach alongside Tu’ipulotu in the Shute Shield. However, with Tu’ipulotu now gone, it appears Paul will now fly solo for the upcoming 2016 season.

When Penrith hit the crease, they managed to chase down Gordon’s total with ease, scoring 6/322. Jonathon Sammut was best with the bat for Penrith with 106 not out. Penrith will play their first One Day match of the season when they take on Randwick-Petersham this Saturday at Howell Oval.

hile most of Australia will be sitting on their couches watching Australia take on the West Indies this Boxing Day, the Glenmore Park Cricket Club will be holding an important cricket contest of its own.

On October 10, the Redbacks cricketing community was rocked by tragedy when the most loved family in the club’s history was devastated by the loss of one of their own.

The D’Agostino family has dedicated a lifetime of voluntary service to the Glenmore Park Cricket Club through Club President Vince, Seniors Secretary Adrian, Committee Member Robert, Jack, Chris and brother-inlaw Jason.

However, just over two months ago, the family’s lives changed forever when Kelly, daughter of Vince, and her husband Jason Dale lost their seven-week-old daughter, Violet Lee, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

In memory of Violet’s sad passing, the club has decided to come together this Boxing Day (December 26) to raise some much needed funds for charity SIDS and Kids.
