hile mourning the loss of her 10-year-old son, a heartbroken mother is pleading for others to educate themselves on the risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Tina Swan and husband Mark laid to rest their little boy Damien in Penrith last Friday. “SUDEP is something that we were never told about with our son, we knew he could have had a bad seizure and pass away but not that,” she said. SUDEP is the sudden unexpected death of someone with epilepsy, who was otherwise well, and in whom no other cause of death can be found. Despite Damien suffering seizures since he was just 11-months-old, Mrs Swan said he was never formally diagnosed with epilepsy. “He’s had a number of idiopathic seizures over the years – seizures with an unknown cause or trigger,” she said. “At 18-months-old we nearly lost him. He had a seizure for almost 40 minutes and was put into an induced coma at Westmead Hospital.” Damien was put on a drug named Lamictal and needed to undergo an ECG test beforehand to make sure his heart was strong enough to handle it. The ECG cleared him to begin taking the drug. “People on Lamictal are at the highest risk of SUDEP. If you’re on Lamictal go and get your heart checked, have your checks done very regularly,” Mrs Swan said. Mrs Swan said if the coroner’s report on Damien’s cause of death states any connection with his heart, they will investigate further.

Tina Swan recently lost her son to SUDEP, and hopes to raise awareness of the widely unknown issue

Council

Congestion and noise concerns highlight opposition to recreational facility at Werrington County @daledrinkwater

DALE DRINKWATER

errington County residents are once again fighting a $4 million development next to their homes that will bring late night weekend functions and increased traffic. A development application (DA) was submitted to Penrith City Council this month to build a recreational facility on John Oxley Avenue, that included a sport centre, bowling alley, gym and function centre. Penrith Councillor and State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car alerted residents who had campaigned against an almost identical DA in June last year, and said previous concerns have not been alleviated. “Those concerns, they still remain,” Ms Car told the Weekender. “Really legitimate concerns from residents are about traffic, are about safety, and that it doesn’t really fit in with the community here in Werrington County.” Mr Car said Dunheved Road is already a nightmare for motorists with serious accidents occurring around Werrington County Shopping Centre and difficulties turning on to John Oxley Avenue.

W

Penrith City Councillor and Member for Londonderry, Prue Car is leading a community fight against a development on John Oxley Avenue. Photo: Melinda Jane “It’s already an ongoing fight with the Government to give us some money to improve that intersection and a development like this will put more people on this

road without fixing that area,” she said. “The last thing we should be doing is putting hundreds and hundreds more people on Dunheved Road.”

The new DA has reduced the number of car spaces from 264 to 158, increased the set back from the road and reduced the number of function rooms to one with a maximum of 250 people. Kylie Watts will live right next to the recreational facility if the development goes ahead. Ms Watts is concerned about the noise from a development and building the community doesn’t need. “I work from home, so I’m worried about noise from the get-go – the demolition, the building – and once it’s built if there are functions,” she said. “We live right next door to it, we don’t want to be living right next to that. “If it’s something that we really needed then we would take it into consideration, but we’ve got these facilities around us already, we don’t need it.” The DA proposed the indoor facility will be open from 7am until 10pm Monday to Sunday, with the function centre opening from 11am until 10pm Sunday to Thursday, and then until midnight Friday and Saturday. Ms Car said residents have until July 6 to make submissions to Council, however, she will ask Council to extend the time period.

State of Origin threatens the very competition that makes it possible The huge crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for State of Origin II on Wednesday night proved just how massive this rugby league concept has now become. It is an unstoppable force in Australian sport, so much so that pretty much everyone agrees that it is having a detrimental effect on the very competition that makes it possible. Everyone in rugby league knows that the current NRL schedule is all over the place, decimated because of an Origin period that sees those playing for NSW and QLD forced to miss club commitments. Not everyone agrees on the solution, or even a need to come up with one, but in truth there’s very little doubt that the code has a real headscratching problem. The week to week NRL competition is rugby league’s bread and butter, and it needs to be operating at optimum capacity. Right now it isn’t, because Origin totally dominates this two month period and yet club games are still worth the same two competition points they are in round one and 26. Showing the bizarre nature of the current system is the fact that Penrith has had byes leading into Origin I and Origin II, and yet don’t have one single player representing their state. So the Panthers got to put their feet up last weekend while the Bulldogs, minus a bunch of Origin players including their halfback, had to play the Titans on the Gold Coast. Every club could probably tell a tale of woe during this Origin period which, while levelling the playing field somewhat, is not the kind of answer we want. The upcoming TV deal is a great opportunity to tweak the schedule somewhat and having listened to all the ideas such as stand-alone Origin weekends and moving Origin altogether, I think I’ve come up with a solution that comes close to meeting everyone’s needs.

TROY DODDS @troydodds

The current schedule is all over the place

The first step is to dump the rep weekend in April, moving the City v Country to the preseason or scrapping it altogether. Yes, it has played an important role on the rugby league calender but something has to go for the greater good. The rep weekend, while providing some entertaining footy, halts the NRL competition just when it’s hotting up and makes no sense. Under my concept, teams play 25 matches instead of 24 and only get one bye. Let’s not forget we have an even number of teams so the bye is not even a requirement. So, we play week in, week out football until we reach Origin I. On the weekend before Origin I, eight teams have byes. The other eight teams play, and like now, are without their Origin stars. On the weekend before Origin II, the other eight teams have their byes and the eight sides who have already had their bye, play without their Origin stars. Origin I and II are still played on Wednesdays. Origin III would be moved to a weekend, to be played on a Sunday night – still keeping a huge television audience. There’s no club football that weekend, and the rest of the weekend is comprised of the Under 20’s Origin and a number of Pacific Test matches, moved from the rep weekend. The result? Teams get one more club game, which is a huge opportunity to create a country-themed round where clubs take matches to the bush without losing a game at a home venue. We have every team in the competition only playing one game without their Origin stars. We have a cleaner structure with eight games every round, except the two Origin weekends that each have four games. No system will ever be perfect, but can you really say that’s not a fairer concept?

Badgerys Creek Airport

Badgerys Creek now a ghost town as airport construction nears @jade_aliprandi

adgerys Creek is a suburb everyone in Sydney has been talking about but you could be forgiven for thinking it was the area that time forgot. Caught in the transition between a suburb full of people enjoying a rural lifestyle and the new home of a major airport, the Badgerys Creek of today resembles a ghost town. Monday, June 15 was the deadline residents were given to leave their homes and make way for construction to begin on the proposed airport. When The Western Weekender visited Badgerys Creek on Tuesday, just 20 minutes from the Penrith CBD, it was eerily quiet. Houses have now been boarded up and gated with rubbish left behind for clean up. The school is no longer in operation, and has been damaged by fire. Most of the 455 people who lived in Badgerys Creek left the area, with around 40 people remaining. They are believed to be involved in court action. Families with cattle and animals also still remain in the area, with empty houses to be demolished. The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, who are oversee-

Rubbish piles litter the streets of Badgerys Creek. Photo: Melinda Jane ing the airport project, are aiming to start construction as early as next year, all going to plan. Ultimately, only memories of what was a semi-rural farming community will remain, as construction grows and a new major piece of Sydney infrastructure is created. The Badgerys Creek of a decade’s time will look nothing like it does today.

However, it is expected people will return to the area in under a decade, giving Badgerys Creek a new life. Site analysis is expected to begin shortly with the possibility of the first sod to be turned by the middle of next year. Police snapshot Oxley Park: Bail refused for man who had taser, drugs

Agnes Banks: Woman dies after crash at raceway

Police were contacted last week after a man armed with a taser entered a business premises on Sydney Street in Oxley Park. On Tuesday, June 9 at about 6.50am a female attendant was confronted by the male who made certain demands at her. The female attendant was forced to hand over a small amount of money before the male allegedly ran from the store and drove away in a silver coloured vehicle. At about 8.40am police were patrolling Bennett Road in St Clair when they stopped a silver coloured vehicle, with enquiries leading to the arrest of the male driver. Served with a court attendance notice, it is alleged police found a taser type device and a small amount of prohibited drugs in the man’s possession. Bail was refused.

Detectives from Penrith Local Area Command are currently investigating after a woman was thrown from a sidecar and killed in a motorcycle race at Nepean Raceway. On Sunday, June 14, just after midday, emergency services were called to a property in Agnes Banks after the custom built racing motorcycle, complete with sidecar, crashed during the event. Both the 45-year-old man who was driving the motorcycle, and the 30-year-old woman who was in the sidecar, were taken to hospital suffering from serious injuries. The man suffered broken ribs, a broken collar-bone and a punctured lung while the woman suffered internal injuries and later died in hospital.

St Clair: Family holds fears for missing 37-year-old

Emu Plains: Fire damages industrial unit; nobody injured

The family of 37-year-old Michael Crema last spoke to him on Wednesday, June 10 and have been unable to contact him since. He was reported missing to St Marys Local Area Command on Saturday, June 13. Officers and Michael’s family hold fears for his safety as this is out of the ordinary for him not to be in touch with family. Police have already conducted several searches but have been unable to locate him. Michael is described as being of Caucasian in appearance, 175cm tall, large build, with short brown hair and a brown goatee. A picture is available on our website.

An industrial unit in Emu Plains has been severely damaged by fire this week. Emergency services were called to the workshop on Smith Street at about 1am on Tuesday, June 16 to find the premises well alight. Firefighters had to force entry to the unit and found fire burning on an internal upper level. No one was inside the location at the time and the blaze was quickly extinguished. Officers from Penrith Local Area Command established a crime scene and are now investigating what caused it. The fire was only contained to the single unit.

rson is the suspected cause of a factory fire in South Penrith last weekend. Emergency services were quick to extinguish the fire but not before significant damage was sustained. No injuries were reported. At around 9.30pm last Saturday, June 13, emergency services arrived at the York Road premises to find smoke issuing from the building. After firefighters forced entry into the building they found an active fire and worked quickly to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters then found evidence of possible arson and handed the matter over to the police. Police established a crime scene once the building was deemed safe by fire crews. It was contained to the single unit and police are now carrying out an investigation into the matter. Mayor’s News The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor

Community Assistance Program Council is inviting local non-profit organisations and community groups who provide services to the residents of the Penrith Local Government Area to apply for small grants through its Community Assistance Program (CAP). The program offers small grants of up to $1,200 for non-profit community groups to use toward holding a community event, undertaking a special project, or purchasing equipment. Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the program with Council providing funding for 47 local projects. The Community Assistance Program enables Council to help support many local organisations and groups to run valuable grass roots projects and activities. The grants are a small contribution that can make a big difference to many in our community and for several of the groups that apply, they receive no other government funding. It can

be tough financially in providing the services and for the groups that apply they are made up entirely of volunteers who serve our community. In 2014-15 Council contributed close to $40,000 through the program which funded programs for children, seniors, refugees and people with disabilities. Over the past two decades, Council has donated over $500,000 to hundreds of local community organisations and groups to run activities and projects that benefit local residents. Council understands the enormous task small community organisations and groups take on and we hope these grants will go some way towards sustaining these worthwhile projects for the Penrith community. Applications for funding open on Monday, June 22. For more information visit penrithcity.nsw.gov.au.

owers and other water users will need to be vigilant in the Nepean River while investigation works are underway for the Nepean River Green Bridge. Until Saturday, July 11, the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will undertake initial works for the pedestrian and cycling bridge that will connect the communities of Penrith and Emu Plains. Between 7am and 6pm on weekdays, and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays, boreholes will be drilled near the rail corridor in the river, with one on the eastern side and 10 on the western side. A truck-mounted rig will be used to complete the works, that will enable the relocation of utilities as previously outlined in the latest bridge design announcements. During this time, Tench Reserve boat ramp will remain open, and while the drilling work is carried out on the western side of the river along the Great Western Highway, pedestrian access will be maintained. The RMS said there will be some noise associated with the work, but they will

The design of the new bridge across the Nepean River make every effort to ensure the impact on residents and businesses is minimal. “We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciate the patience of residents and water users,” the RMS said.

In recent days, air horns have been used to warn water users while divers have been checking the river bed for obstructions and carrying out underwater surveys. Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres has welcomed the news that investigations

are continuing for the bridge that has had several detailed design changes since being approved in November last year. For more information and updates on the Nepean River Green Bridge, visit www. rms.nsw.gov.au/roadprojects.

Red Cow donates $50,000 to help Wentworth Community Housing assist locals doing it tough DALE DRINKWATER

@daledrinkwater

entworth Community Housing (WCH) has received its biggest donation yet – an incredible $50,000 from Penrith’s The Red Cow Inn. Wentworth Community Housing’s CEO, Nick Sabel, said the donation will provide valuable assistance for the organisation to support the local community. “This donation is outstanding... we probably haven’t received a donation at all like this, and we hope that it will be one of many coming up,” he said. “This provides more emergency relief for people who come to us who don’t have anything... and we can look at providing some temporary accommodation options.” WCH manages over 2000 properties and provides housing to over 5000 people. Mr Sabel said the struggles people face are very real. “Less than one per cent of Sydney homes are considered appropriate and affordable for people who live on government support payments,” he said. Formerly homeless, father and son duo David and Alan Vanderban said the help they received from WCH six months ago

W

Councillor Greg Davies, The Red Cow Inn licensee Vincent Falconi and Wentworth Community Housing CEO Nick Sabel last Friday

took them from living under a bridge to holding up their own private rental. “Living under the bridge was dangerous and cold, and you think people over the bridge are going to come down and do something to you,” Alan said. Red Cow licensee Vincent Falconi said listening to these stories hit home on how important their donation is and the good places it will go. “Penrith means a lot and has given a lot to us and we wanted to give a little bit back,” he said. “It’s a lot of money but if you’re going to do it you might as well do it so it’s a good contribution. We wanted to keep things local that we could see and feel.” Penrith Councillor Greg Davies noted that the 2011 Census indicated that there were 69 people experiencing homelessness in Penrith alone, and that house prices in Penrith have increased by 34 per cent. “Anecdotal evidence we have done through Council indicated that number has increased enormously since then,” he said. “It’s because of the rental and private house buying options, the demand is just greater than supply and that’s very hard to get places.”

or five years, local childcare centre owner Mark Edward Myles paid employees as little as $2.15 an hour and let the electricity be disconnected – now his cost cutting and questionable behaviour has caught up with him. The Federal Circuit Court has fined Mr Myles $28,900 for several breaches including underpaying 16 employees that totalled a whopping $361,955. Between 2008 and 2013, Mr Myles admitted to severely underpaying employees at the Bollygum Childcare Centre in South Penrith and then Lethbridge Park. Mr Myles also made an admission to cutting an employee’s hours because she complained to the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO), a move that Judge Robert Cameron said was of particular concern. “The action taken towards [her] is indicative of either culpable ignorance of employees’ rights or a contumacious disregard of them,” he said. Evidence was provided by the FWO showing one employee was paid $2.15 an hour, and three more just $3.31, $3.37 and $3.98 per hour, leaving many of them struggling to pay rent and bills. A manager at the childcare centre was underpaid $49,533 over four years –

many people’s yearly salary – and said in addition, her marriage and family life suffered after spending her after hours time counselling co-workers and helping investigations. Seven workers under 21 were taken advantage of with one 18-year-old being underpaid almost $15,000, and another losing $33,000 of pay. The latter employee said she could not pay rent on time as she did not receive payslips from Mr Myles so couldn’t apply for Austudy, and Mr Myles wouldn’t respond when she would ask that her underpayments be corrected. Judge Cameron said the penalty should serve as a warning to others to not engage in conduct that is wrongful hostility to the exercise of employees’ rights. FWO Natalie James said the penalty sends a clear message that serious conduct will not go unpunished and those making the decision will be held accountable. “Successful legal actions such as this also benefit employers doing the right thing because it helps them compete on a level playing field,” she said. Over 2013-2014, the FWO recovered $438,000 for childcare workers nationally, but Ms James said operators need to understand and comply with workplace laws in the first place.

dear weekender... Missing the point? I think the editorial has missed the point (Editor’s Desk, Western Weekender June 12). Joe stated the obvious; everyone who has considered purchasing a property understands the requirements, we didn’t need a lesson on Mortgages For Dummies from the Treasurer. The offending comment, “The starting point for a first home buyer is to get a good job that pays good money” follows an opening comment from the Treasurer denying a housing affordability crisis because people are still buying properties. In other words, Joe Hockey’s message was that if you can’t afford to buy a home you are not earning enough. Unfortunately, he doesn’t understand that when an average wage earner doesn’t earn enough to buy a home we have a housing affordability crisis. ANNETTE THAIN, VIA FACEBOOK

We want consistency Hockey might be right but, as opposition, he ranted about how unaffordable housing was under Labor. Why can’t our politicians have the integrity to be consistent

said we all have our own views on this matter and I would like to express mine. The word marriage has been used for hundreds of years and has represented the union between a man and a woman. This is a big distinction between same sex marriages. I myself have a wife who is a woman and have no desire to be put in the same basket as same sex people using the word marriage. There needs to be another process for the same sex people. You cannot put everyone in the same mix. I am not trying to deny them happiness but don’t use the word marriage as it has been taken for husband and wife, man and woman, not for two of the same sex. Surely, Troy, you can see the logic in this and include this in your paper as a different point of view. PETER CARRICK, CAMBRIDGE GARDENS

and [not] change their tune when they are in government. ROD THORNTON, VIA FACEBOOK

Good parenting, bad politics Your parents tell you to study and work hard to get a well paying job so you can afford the nicer things later in life. They call that good parenting. A politician says it and it becomes a problem. ADAM EADIE, VIA FACEBOOK

Have some empathy, Joe It doesn’t take much to show a little empathy. I think that is mostly what people are peeved with. I have my own place but I really do feel for those who are entering the market for the first time. SAMANTHA KAY, VIA FACEBOOK

Same sex marriage

Shocked at letters

Your comments about same sex marriage in your editorial no doubt were not only to express your view, but to try to influence the community that reads your paper (Editor’s Desk, Western Weekender June 5). As you have

I was shocked at some of the comments made by those writing letters on the subject of same sex marriage last week. One writer talks about the Bible and how that should essentially be what rules

email: news@westernweekender.com.au post: Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street, Jamisontown 2750

us on this matter. Why? There’s plenty of things in the Bible that, if we were to follow to the letter, would have us living in a rather strange society. Either way, while the Bible may have helped form many of our traditions, I agree with Troy Dodds in that it was written a very long time ago, and surely God would want to see his society flourish and grow. If God created man, he also created the gay man. Another said it “goes against nature”. Really? For me, what goes against nature is standing in the way of two people who love each other from doing whatever they want to do in life. I have a big red rug in my lounge room that people hate. I don’t really care, because they don’t have to look at it every day. It’s my choice and it makes me happy. That might be a simplistic view but given how basic and simple the views opposing same sex marriage are, I think it suits. And what about the writer who seemed to think that Gough Whitlam and Lionel Murphy are to blame for marriage problems that exist today. In our society, we’re allowed to divorce because we’re allowed to do what makes

us happy as individuals. Peter Townsend writes that he “shudders to think of the ensuing legal repercussions of such a change to marriage legislation”. What legal repercussions? Seriously! The generation gap is obvious here but it is time Penrith woke up to itself: allow others to be happy. TOM RANDALL, VIA EMAIL

Get yourself tested Further to the article on Bowel Cancer that appeared in the Western Weekender on Friday, June 5. As part of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, there is a simple test kit available from chemists at the cost of just $10. Five years ago, my husband took advantage of the kit, despite having absolutely no symptoms. The results were positive, leading to an operation that managed to remove all the cancer as it had been discovered early. Now our whole family get the kit each year, as we know first hand the value of early detection. We recommend it to everyone during June, the Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. SUSAN O’NEILL, CRANEBROOK

Community Service Awards for brothers who transformed the CBD into a massive ANZAC tribute JADE ALIPRANDI

ocal brothers Martin and Owen Rogers were awarded with Community Service Awards this week for their work on Poppy Park, established for the ANZAC Centenary in April. Over 10 weeks the pair developed Poppy Park into a floral arena for the community to visit and to help them remember those who served for the country. It gained nationwide attention and became an iconic part of the Penrith CBD, albeit for a temporary period. State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres was at the morning tea on Monday to award the brothers in a surprise presentation of the certificates. “These two, along with the volunteers, managed to showcase Penrith on a national level with the creation of Poppy Park,” Mr Ayres said. “It was truly an incredibly special community activity and these things just don’t happen unless people roll their sleeves up and do it.” Over 1500 people volunteered to help create the poppies and place them at Poppy Park in the lead-up to the Centenary. “We were able to activate people’s inter-

The Penrith area only receives two Community Service Awards each year to present to members of the public for outstanding community-based work.

While Poppy Park has now been dismantled, there’s no doubt that it will remain an important part of Penrith’s history and legacy.

tudents from Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School were given the chance to get their creative juices flowing last week at Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa. Taking notes of the picturesque scenery, the students began working on their artwork that will eventually be presented to the owners of the property as well as their parents at a special evening this August. “I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for the students to experience the escape

that Fernhill provides and for them to create beautiful artwork of the scenery in the meantime,” property owner, Brenda Tripp said. Organised by community development organisation Panthers on the Prowl, students were stimulated by their environmental surrounds for several hours, allowing plenty of time to grab the opportunity and run with it. 19 students from years 7, 8 and 9 were all welcome at the property. “Students will go back to school and build their artwork up. They might do ceramics, drawing or photography,” Project Officer, Graham Collins said.

Hard work leads to impressive awards Local students juggle TAFE, families, work and other studies in a mission to achieve their career dreams DALE DRINKWATER

wo local women have received recognition for their efforts at the Western Sydney Institute of TAFE 2015 Student Excellence Awards. Tiana-Lee Hale from Penrith received two awards including TVET Student of the Year and Business and Management Student of the Year for her studies in a Certificate IV in Marketing. Ms Hale was nominated for her high levels of resilience and independence, and for demonstrating diligence and organisational ability. “It was a surprise, I knew my teacher nominated me for one award but I ended up getting two,” she said. Ms Hale completed her marketing course at TAFE while studying for her HSC at St Marys Senior High School, and is now enrolled in a Bachelor of Business and Commerce at university. “It’s all about managing time, I had to make sure there was time set aside for both – I’m really organised, I have calendars everywhere,” she laughed. Ms Hale said she wants to pursue a career in high fashion marketing as a creative director.

T

“I actually wanted to do it, that’s what gave me the motivation,” she said. “I want to get within marketing in the high-end fashion retail space like Chanel.” Trish Tipping from South Penrith completed a Diploma of Graphic Design and said she was surprised to receive the award for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year. “I wasn’t expecting it but my teacher loves how far I’ve come and what I’m achieving with not just me as a person, but doing it with a family,” she said. Ms Tipping is currently completing an Advanced Diploma through the Nepean Arts and Design Centre and said juggling family life hasn’t been easy. “It’s been a massive challenge but I’ve done it. When the kids go to bed I pull out my TAFE work and get it done,” Ms Tipping said. “Sometimes I stay up all night to get it done.” Ms Tipping identifies with the Wiradjuri people of central Australia and said she wants to help Indigenous people to overcome challenges through creative expression. “I want to be able to do as well as I can, from photography to design. I love it all,” she said.

he State Government and Council have come together to personally thank the efforts of 80 dedicated local volunteers. Nepean Food Services held their annual Volunteer Recognition Day last week, with support from Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler, Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres. “It was my pleasure to attend the Nepean Food Services Volunteer Recognition event and it was great to see the volunteers come together for this celebration,” Mr Ayres said. “I commended all the volunteers for the wonderful and valued work they do within our community.” A Nepean Food Services spokesperson said the celebrations at Regentville Hall were a huge success and volunteers

T

like Don (last name withheld) enjoyed themselves. “Nepean Food Services is a good service and we as volunteers are happy to help,” Don said. “We gain satisfaction from building a good rapport with our clients and being entrusted with such an important responsibility.” The volunteers perform a range of services that enable clients to remain independent in their homes such as frozen meal deliveries, hot runs and social support. Volunteers also attend and coordinate Luncheon clubs and special outings for Nepean Food Services clients in the Penrith LGA and Warragamba. The Nepean Food Services thanked Guardian Funerals for their generous donation of a lucky door prize of an 83cm TV on the day, and the Nepean Rowing Club for their hampers and gifts.

Turning back Time

St Marys residents, you’ve got mail! Post offices are becoming less and less relevant these days but there was a time when they were a vital part of any town in Australia. Jade Aliprandi discovers the long history of mail in the St Marys area... St Marys’ very first post office. Photo: Penrith City Library

S

t Marys has a rich history when it comes to the delivery of mail, including being home to the very first post office between Parramatta and Penrith – now one of the oldest in NSW having opened in the 1840s. Prior to the railway in 1855, mail was delivered by horse-drawn passenger coaches, running daily from Sydney to Parramatta and twice a week to Penrith and Windsor. Sir Maurice O’Connell was the first person to make a move to get a post office in the St Marys area, eventually operating it out of his private dwelling known as ‘O’Connell’s Terrace’. William Morton was appointed as the first postmaster of the St Marys Post Office on October 1, 1840. He had no yearly salary. He was, however, given a commission of 20 per cent of all money collected from postage, at a time before the introduction of the adhesive postage stamp. After three short years, Mr Morton resigned and William Woodland accepted

the role of postmaster. He was to stay in that position for the next eight years. Four postmasters later, in 1860, townsman Matthew Webb Senior, a bookmaker, became the newest postmaster with a salary of thirty pounds per annum or $60. After looking after the post office for the next 14 years, it was reported he died in 1875. This was at a time when Post Offices around the country were being equipped for the Morse code telegraph system, and were now becoming known as ‘Post and Telegraph’ offices. Miss Ellen L. Pegus, who was a telephone receptionist at Paddington in Sydney, was appointed as Post and Telegraph Mistress with a salary of 88 pounds or $176 per annum. The post office was called St Marys and not South Creek, offering considerable confusion as the school and railway were still both known as South Creek. In 1885, the townspeople proposed the name for both the school and railway should be St Marys and, as a result, on June 4, 1885, the name South Creek Public School was altered to St Marys Public

School. On August 1 the railway station was also altered. For several years following this, a new petition was made by residents to have the post office situated more centrally located in their town. The Postal Department eventually called tenders for a suitable site with James Byrnes, the publican, offering a site near his hotel; James Hackett, a site diagonally opposite the Volunteer Hotel (now the Wagon Wheel); and George Bennett, a wagon builder, a site near the 29 mile stone. Mr Bennett had his site selected for the new post office. The post office opened in 1883 and had been built ‘cottage like’ and was placed well back from the street. However, several years later St Marys’ commercial and business life shifted well towards Queen Street and it was obvious to the locals that this was where the town’s new economic industry was shaping. Subsequently, the postal department decided to build an office in the town’s new centre, a big decision that left the old post and telegraph office, that had served

the community for 81 years, empty as of 1965. A letter pillar box was placed outside the premises of the old post office for the convenience of those still living in the vicinity. In 1987 the staff of the St Marys Post Office included 47 consists of the Postmaster, 14 counter and administrative staff, nine mail room staff and 23 postmen. They served 16,500 householders, 1100 businesses and 537 private boxholders. Surrounding suburbs were also on the list of deliveries for the postmen including Werrington, Werrington County, St Clair, Oxley Park, Erskine Park, Colyton, Claremont Meadows and Dunheved, while two mail contractors delivered to Llandilo and Kemps Creek. The newly renovated office had 966 private boxes, an increase of 428. On average 333,000 postal articles passed through St Marys Post Office each month with the staff handling an average of 1700 counter transactions a day. These days, post offices are again going through massive transformations thanks to the digital age.

utback Steakhouse Penrith celebrates five years of trading this month and has enjoyed year-on-year success since they opened their doors at the Panthers Complex back in 2010. Outback has established itself as one of Penrith’s most popular eateries and has served over three quarters of a million guests in that time. Outback prides itself on the quality of food which is all prepared on the premises including cutting the meat and prepping every one of the hot and cold sauces. Outback employs over 80 Penrith locals including 10 staff with disabilities, successfully employed through the local Ability Options office that all work together to deliver one of the best dining experiences in the area. Another reason for Outback’s success, and one they have had local and national recognition for, is their support for the community in which they all live, work and play. Outback’s commitment to

‘Involvement in the Community’ is a weekly focus for the management team led by proprietor Mike Hicks. “Since day one we have looked to partner with schools, clubs and associations in the area and raise money by barbequing at their fete events as well as supporting the daily requests for fundraising donations,” Mike said. “Businesses in Penrith are very supportive of the community in so many different ways and we are proud to play our part. “Our staff look forward to these events and especially enjoy going back to see how the funds raised have helped the cause.” Outback Steakhouse Penrith have raised over $100,000 in the community over the past five years, supporting Relay for Life, Panthers on the Prowl, local schools including St Mary Mackillop, St Nicholas of Myra and various sports clubs including Jamison Little Athletics Association, Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Club and the Penrith Emus. BUSINESS TIPS

27

Skilled or unskilled? There’s reasons to hire both!

Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design

Michael Todd // Small Biz Connect Advisor Penrith Valley BEC

W

hen I was 19 I told my parents I was going to travel overseas by myself. They laughed a little and said “no you’re not”. Their lack of agreement with my plans came not from thinking I wouldn’t have the confidence to do it, but because I had no job and no savings at the time. As parents should, they were looking at the practical aspects of my plan and concluded that it wasn’t feasible. But this just made me more determined to find a job and save every cent. I managed to get there via some creative means (and borrowing the final portion from my parents!) and credit my three months travelling solo with building maturity, tenacity and resourcefulness. When I started my business, there were similar naysayers about the longevity of my business plans. It was either viewed as a hobby or wouldn’t last beyond a few years. Some of these opinions were innocent and uninformed (not intended to belittle me, but just stating the ‘facts’ as they saw them), while others (from

potential competitors) were a little more sinister in purpose. Regardless, I took all these comments as fuel to prove them all wrong – and 10 years later I think I have! Remember Jessica Watson, the Australian woman who at age 16 sailed solo around the world? Although Australia now claims her as a great success story, many criticisms were aimed at Jessica, and even more so at her parents for letting their daughter do something so risky. I imagine that while some of the comments hurt, they also spurred her on to prove them wrong. But more importantly, Jessica had her own intrinsic reasons and motivation for undertaking the journey. She stated that: “I wanted to challenge myself and achieve something to be proud of. I wanted to inspire people. I hated being judged by my appearance and other people’s expectations of what a ‘little girl’ was capable of”. So ignore those who say “You’ll never make it”. Remember why you started your business, and listen to your own voice rather than any negative ones.

I

t is said that at least 50 per cent of jobs require some sort of qualification or certificate achievement which illustrates the challenges for those who are unskilled and lack experience when seeking employment. I think there will continue to be a big change happening with what employers value in potential staff members. I have seen first-hand that, for certain jobs, education has become more prevalent as employers have turned their attention to other characteristics such as personal style, accent and mannerisms, adaptability and team working. These ‘soft skills’ are now being seen as points of talent. There are of course some obvious disadvantages of unskilled employees, but I have found they also carry some advantages. Similarly, hiring skilled employees carries its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Job Readiness: A skilled employee is often immediately ready to assume the responsibilities of a new job. A learning curve will always exist as they become used to your culture and policies. On the other hand, unskilled employees are usually not yet trained to perform specific

jobs and employers often need to spend extra time teaching them. Advancement: Most small businesses hire workers with the intention of developing and keeping them. Skilled employees usually advance into higher positions or management more quickly than unskilled employees. They often have the appropriate skills to match your needs. Unskilled employees often have basic abilities. It typically takes them much longer to advance. Loyalty: It is bad to generalise, but skilled workers know they are just that. They want to progress quickly both financially and status wise because they believe they deserve it due to their education background. On the other hand, if you give an unskilled person a chance, then the loyalty this can create is something that is valued more than anything else. Cost: One advantage of hiring unskilled workers is cost. Whether through normal employment or an education linked employment like a traineeship, value is a factor. Skilled employees command higher remuneration due to their experience and/or education.

Panthers hit the reset button TROY DODDS @troy_dodds

A

nd so it begins – the second half of a season that promised so much, yet at times has appeared as awkward as a ride in an elevator with Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard. After a promising start, Penrith’s season has been decimated by injury and the result is that the side currently sits outside of the top eight and has very little to show in terms of consistent good form. Only bottom placed Manly has scored less points than the Panthers this season, proving just how decimated Penrith’s halves have been with constant personnel changes resulting in a point scoring drought. The good thing about a bye weekend is that it offers you the opportunity to reset your season, take stock and start over. And while coach Ivan Cleary wouldn’t

want a completely clean slate going into the second half of the year (there have been some highlights, after all) it is obvious that he would have drawn a line in the sand over the past two weeks and declared that it’s time to get serious. Injuries remain a problem at the Panthers but the time for excuses is over. The 17 blokes who run out in that Panthers jumper each week need to do so with pride, passion and determination. They need to be prepared to overcome the adversity that has followed this footy club over the past two seasons. This weekend against the Bulldogs, the Panthers should welcome back key playmaker Jamie Soward, who missed the match against Melbourne due to a shoulder injury. He said on Monday that he remained in doubt for Saturday’s clash but was named on Tuesday and is hopeful of playing. It is vitally important that the Panthers have both Soward and Peter Wallace on the park together. Wallace struggles without Soward alongside him because he doesn’t quite

PANTHERS V BULLDOGS SATURDAY, JUNE 20 • 7.30PM ANZ STADIUM REFEREES: GRANT ATKINS AND ADAM DEVCICH TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 7.30PM RADIO: 2GB LIVE 7.30PM have the ability to jump on opportunities and create tries and chances out of nothing. Conversely, when Wallace isn’t there, Soward almost tries too hard and the control of the game can fall from his grasp. Josh Mansour hasn’t been named to make his return but there’s a whisper around that he could push Waqa Blake out of the side at the last minute. Mansour would provide the Panthers a massive boost against a forward pack that is the biggest in the NRL.

Canterbury coach Des Hasler is back to playing mind games ahead of this game, refusing to name his State of Origin players including halfback Trent Hodkinson. You can almost guarantee that if fit, they’ll all play come Saturday. As it stands, the Bulldogs’ starting pack is ferocious. Aiden Tolman, Sam Kasiano, Antonio Kaufusi, Frank Pritchard and Greg Eastwood, along with lively hooker Michael Lichaa, will look to run over the top of the Panthers in the early stages. It’s a dire warning to the Panthers given they struggled in the forward battle against both the Eels and Storm. While the Bulldogs have leaked plenty of points this season (300 from 13 matches), their pack is second to none when it comes to size and it doesn’t get any easier when their bench players come on. With rain likely at ANZ Stadium, every metre up the middle will be important. Yes, the Bulldogs have size and strength but the Panthers are desperate to restore some lost pride. It should be a cracker.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS

SEND YOUR PANTHERS GOSSIP AT NEWS@WESTERNWEEKENDER.COM.AU

with the

Masked Panther

» Strong rumours suggest that Api Koroi-

sau won’t be at the Panthers next season. For Penrith, signing Koroisau was an insurance policy in case James Segeyaro was out for whatever reason. But for Koroisau, the signing was a strange one given he was unlikely to get any serious first grade game time. Watch this space but it would appear that Koroisau won’t be in a Panthers jumper next year. Expect to see him back at Souths or at the Sea Eagles.

» Daily Telegraph journalist Phil Rothfield

API COULD BE ON THE WAY OUT OF THE PANTHERS

has questioned the current situation regarding the Panthers and injured star Jamal Idris. Rothfield reported on Monday that Idris was spotted on Saturday at 3am drinking at the Albion Hotel in Parramatta. A couple of weeks ago he was out late at a rave concert in Brisbane, according to Rothfield. While there’s no suggestion Idris displayed any sort of bad behaviour, Rothfield does bring up an interesting point given drinking is usually heavily frowned upon when it comes to injured players – and in fact totally outlawed by many clubs.

» Talking of Idris, Rugby League Week

reported on Monday that there’s strong whispers suggesting that he could end up at Manly next season. This isn’t a new rumour, but given the monumental change happening over at the Sea Eagles, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it happen.

» Panthers boss Phil Gould has denied

the club is looking to sign Roosters Forward Sam Moa.

» The Panthers announced the signing of French back-rower Ben Garcia last week. Garcia will join the Panthers next season from English Super League club Catalans Dragons, where he has plied his trade for the last two years. The 22-year-old previously played for the Brisbane Broncos’ NYC side and returns to Australia as a French international, having made his international debut at the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. “Benjamin’s form has been outstanding for the Catalans Dragons and he attracted tremendous attention from a number of Super League clubs looking for his signature,” said Panthers boss Phil Gould. “He has a burning desire to make it in the NRL and we are extremely happy he has chosen Panthers as the place to pursue that opportunity. This kid can play.”

Api Koroisau’s future at Penrith is in doubt

» Youngsters Sione Katoa, Viliame (Bill)

Kikau and Zach Dockar-Clay also signed deals with the Panthers last week and will add depth to the lower grades next season.

» Hawkesbury Radio has issued an apol-

ogy to former Panthers forward Clint Newton, who was in town last week playing for Newcastle against the Panthers in the NSW Cup. Newton took offence to comments made during the station’s call of the match.

» Men of League does a tremendous job

in the rugby league community and now a Penrith-based committee of the organisation is close to forming. It should be up and running by the end of the year.

been appointed CEO of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. His job will be to help plan and deliver a successful World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand. Michael has more than 20 years experience in the sporting sector, most recently as CEO of the Asian Football Confederation’s 2015 Asian Cup Australia. That event, which involved 32 games in 23 days, attracted more than 650,000 fans – nearly double the anticipated crowd figure.

» Former Penrith Panthers prop Ross

Cale, who played at the club in the late 70s, remains on the road to recovery after a horse riding accident in Dubbo earlier this year. Cale suffered serious damage to his right leg and also broke two ribs in the incident. He’s now on the mend after stints in both Dubbo District Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred.

We need to go back to basics With Penrith’s season sitting in a precarious state, Dean Whare says the way forward is as simple as playing basic footy and holding onto the ball...

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

P

anthers centre Dean Whare believes his struggling side needs to go back to basics in order to get their season back under control. The 25-year-old Kiwi international, who only recently returned after an eight week absence through injury, said the Panthers need to return to playing simple footy or their season could be in severe trouble. “For us it’s about stripping it back and getting back to that simple footy we know how to play,” Whare told Extra Time. “I know we’ve had a lot of injuries but that’s definitely not an excuse for us to be playing the way we are. We had the same amount of injuries last year and still made the top four. “Against Melbourne we had 22 penalties and errors, and you’re never going to get the opportunity to score tries when you don’t have the ball. I think if we hold the ball and play simple footy, we’ll get down to the other end of the park and score points.” Penrith currently hold the second worst record for points scored this year and will

come up against a Canterbury Bulldogs outfit who’ll be very determined to avenge last week’s shock loss to the Gold Coast Titans. Whare said Penrith can’t play the way they did against Melbourne a fortnight ago otherwise they’ll be punished by Canterbury’s monster pack. “The Bulldogs are an awesome team; we know they have the biggest pack,” Whare said. “If we turn over cheap ball they are going to run amok, so it’s all about us holding the ball and playing simple footy.” Meanwhile, after a number of injury setbacks over the past two months, Whare admitted he was over the moon to be playing in Saturday night’s must-win game at ANZ Stadium. Whare hurt his hamstring during Penrith’s win over Manly in Round 6 and was only expected to be missing for up to two weeks. “I kept trying to come back in the captain’s run and I kept tweaking my hammy,” he said. “I soon found out it was more than just the hammy giving me trouble, it was my back too. “The hammy feels a million times better and I’m definitely ready for this weekend.”

WHY WE WILL MAKE THE FINALS

LOCAL RADIO

fter an up-and-down first half of the season, the Panthers are sitting on 14 points with 12 games to go. It probably doesn’t seem like the ideal start but I’m a ‘glass half-full’ kind of guy. Every year a team jumps out of the blocks and has a great opening to the season then falls apart in the backend of the year. Every team goes through a tough period; it might be Origin period, it might be because of injuries or maybe the players just lose form. The reason I am so confident about our second half of the season is I think we have been through our tough period and can now come out the other side. Our last game against the Storm was probably rock bottom – a genuine reality check for the boys. However we are now starting to get players back from injury and those players will be fresh and jumping out of their skin, as opposed to players who go all season then burn out in the final rounds. The team is starting to combine well in training and beginning to look a lot more fluent in attack. After a week off, the players have bounced into every session looking hungry and ready for the challenge in front of them.

Sam McKendry in action So bring on the Bulldogs! Don’t forget this is the team that knocked us out last year and denied us our fairytale run to the grand final. They are going to be extremely motivated after their loss to the Titans and will likely have their Origin stars back on deck. But we’re ready. Come on you Panthers fans – get yourselves down to ANZ Stadium on Saturday night and help us kick off the second half of our season with a win.

Panthers look to the future Phil Gould calls the new Rugby League Academy at Panthers the most significant football investment in Penrith’s history...

NATHAN TAYLOR natetaylor87

fter years of waiting, construction has finally commenced on the $20 million Panthers Rugby League Academy. The world class centre of excellence, which will be located behind Penrith Panthers Leagues Club, is designed to provide a premium training and development environment for both senior and junior players. The Panthers Rugby League Academy will boast expansive education facilities, team rooms, state-of-the-art AV rooms, a fully-equipped gym, medical facilities and recreational spaces. Due to be completed by June 2016, the main academy building will be flanked by two full-size training fields and establish Penrith Panthers as an eminent force in the development of current and future rugby league players. “The Academy will be among the best in the country and cements Panthers’ commitment to being one of the preeminent sporting organisations in Australia,” Panthers Group CEO, Warren Wilson said. Panthers Executive General Manager of

Stuart Ayres, Tanya Davies, Greg Alexander, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Phil Gould, Bryce Cartwright, Fiona Scott and Warren Wilson Rugby League, Phil Gould, said the facility will play a vital role in developing the next generation of rugby league stars. “It’s the most significant investment this club has made in rugby league in its history,” he said. “The facility will be a source of inspiration and aspiration for all young players, not only in the Penrith district, but in country areas as well.” Attending the ceremonial ‘turning of the

sod’ last Friday morning was NSW Sports Minister and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres, Federal Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott, Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies, Panthers club director Greg Alexander as well as current players Bryce Cartwright and Reagan Campbell-Gillard. “This will become a mecca for people who want to participate in good community activity and enhance their footballing prowess,” Mr Ayres said.

PANTHERS LOOK TO MAKE IT NINE STRAIGHT WINS AGAINST STRUGGLING BULLDOGS The Penrith Panthers will look for their ninth straight win this Saturday evening when they take on the Canterbury Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium. The Panthers are the Holden Cup’s hottest team at the moment and are playing to the standard that they were when they won the premiership back in 2013. That side, of course, featured a number of current NRL players including Bryce Cartwright, Waqa Blake, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, George Jennings, Isaah Yeo, Reagan Campbell-Gillard and now Titans players James Roberts and Kierran Moseley. This year’s crop may be full of unknowns at this stage, but if they keep performing the way they do, there’s no telling where they could end up. Speaking to Penrith’s official website recently, rookie Panthers coach and former player Cameron Ciraldo said he was very happy with how his young side was tracking at this point of the season. “We’ve been improving our performances each week, which has been pleasing, we’re still halfway though the comp, so we have a long way to go,” he said. The Panthers currently sit in first place

on the Holden Cup ladder with 10 wins and two losses to their name. Ciraldo admitted if his troops continue to perform to a high standard this season, they could push for NSW Cup selection as early as this year. Already a number of players including Stanton Albert and Maliko Filino have made their NSW Cup debuts. “Our entire forward pack is pushing to play NSW Cup in the near future. Also our captain Brent Naden is going really well, same with a couple of others like Tyrone May and Soni Luke,” he said. While the Panthers are flying high and look unstoppable at the moment, Ciraldo said now’s the time not to get complacent as there’s still plenty to work on. “Defensively we’re always looking to improve, we hate letting in tries,” he said. “We’re scoring a fair few points at the moment but I think leading into the back-end of the season, we’re going to have to work harder for our tries and make sure we’re all on the same page.” Kick off between the first-placed Penrith Panthers and 12th placed Canterbury Bulldogs is at 5.15pm this Saturday, June 20.

PENRITH PANTHERS PREVAIL IN GRAND FINAL REPLAY BUT AT WHAT COST? In an absorbing and at times physical encounter that lived up to the pre-match hype, Penrith have held off a fast-finishing Newcastle side to win the second Grand Final replay of 2015, 30-24 at Pepper Stadium. In an evenly matched first-half, Penrith led 14-12 before taking a commanding 3012 lead midway through the second half before Newcastle hit back with two tries in five minutes to set up a grandstand finish before the Panthers prevailed. The win over the Knights sees the Panthers increase their lead at the top of the ladder to three points, as they head into their second of three scheduled byes. However the win may have come at a price with Wellington Albert (dislocated shoulder) likely to be sidelined for an extended period while Sione Katoa accepted a one match ban for a Grade 1 Dangerous Contact charge. Will Smith was due to appear before the judiciary on Thursday night after he plead not guilty to a Grade 1 Shoulder Charge offence that carries a two game ban should he be found guilty. Penrith came into the game strengthened by the late inclusion of Sam Anderson, Adam Docker and Katoa, replacing Matt Eisenhuth, Nathan Smith and Sam

www.fit4all.com.au

Scarlett respectively. The competition’s best defence was put to the test early, as Penrith repelled several Knights attacking raids inside their 20 before the Panthers turned defence into attack to score two tries in six minutes through Isaac John and Eddie Aiono, to open up a 10-0 lead midway through the first half. A run of penalties allowed Newcastle to hit back and take a 12-10 lead after 29 minutes when Chad Redman and Joseph Tapine scored back-to-back tries. An error from Knights skipper and exPanther, Clint Newton on the stroke of half-time, was punished by the Panthers when Aiono finished off a slick backline movement to score his second try of the afternoon to snatch a 14-12 lead. Penrith scored three unanswered tries through Will Smith, Wellington Albert and Leilani Latu to open up a commanding 30-12 lead midway through the second half. Newcastle took advantage to narrow the gap to six points with eight minutes remaining after Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Danny Levi scored, but Penrith closed out the game in the same manner that they started it; through grim defence, to record their sixth win in seven matches. The side has this weekend off.

FEATURE

Share a laugh with Akmal KATE REID @kate_reid6

N

ot many people can say they’ve experienced 500 horny women throwing plastic cups at them, but comedian Akmal Saleh admits that angry audiences are just a part of the job, and an unfortunate side effect of being booked as the opening act for a male revue. “It was just the wrong act for the crowd,” Akmal laughed. “That’s the thing a lot of people don’t realise is that comedy’s like music. “It’s so varied in style and varied in taste... what you may find funny someone else may not find funny at all.” Luckily for Akmal there’s plenty of people that find him very funny indeed.

His popularity has led to appearances on TV shows including ‘The Footy Show’, ‘Thank God You’re Here’ and ‘Spicks and Specks’, his own radio show on Nova Melbourne and Sydney, countless awards including an ARIA for his DVD ‘Live and Uncensored’ and performances at some of the world’s biggest comedy festivals including Edinburgh. The Egyptian-born comedian originally found his connection with the world of comedy at an early age. “I was obsessed with it. At school when people would listen to music I’d listen to comedy albums,” he said. “I kind of connected with the comedians more than any other people, any other society, any other community, I felt at home.” He spent hours listening to and watching comedic heroes including Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Steve Martin and Monty Python. “When I first heard their albums I just thought ‘my God, where’d this come from’,” he said.

“At school when people would listen to music I’d listen to comedy albums”

“It was almost like I’d been waiting for it, I’d been waiting to hear it, these adults acting like children in the most brilliant way.” Akmal originally immigrated to Australia from Egypt in the 1970s at the age of 11. Much of his childhood was spent moving around due to his father’s work requirements. One of the first things he remembers noticing when the family arrived in Sydney was how empty it was compared to Cairo. “We pretty much overnight went from possibly the most over populated city in the world to the least populated city in the world at the time,” he said. “When we landed in Sydney it looked like the place was closed.” It certainly took him a while to get used to his new home. “Buses would go by and there’d be no one in them,” he said. “That was unthinkable in Egypt, no matter what time people’d be just hanging off the roof [of the bus],” he laughed. Akmal’s comedy draws heavily on this contrast between his Arab heritage and his life in Australia. He also has a talent for addressing heavy subjects, including religion and terrorism, in a non-offensive way. He admits that when it comes to comedy there’s really no topic that’s off limits. “Theoretically you can talk about anything and make it funny, if you’re clever enough,” he said. “But the more contentious, more sensitive the issue the more careful you have to be. “The idea is to make people laugh, it’s never to offend them.” Which is exactly what he’s aiming for when he makes his way to Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, July 11. Audiences can expect an hilarious show that draws heavily on audience interaction and Akmal’s signature freestyle brand of comedy. “I’m very lazy by nature,” he said. “I’ve found that over the years a lot of the really well-written material I initially improvised. “I initially just worked off the audience, just workshopped with the audience, so they helped me write it. “That’s what makes it interesting for me, it keeps it exciting for me, it keeps it fresh.” Of course the downside of audience participation comes in the form of the dreaded heckler. Though Akmal admits the destructive, and often drunk, variety of heckler can ruin a show, there’s also a very productive style of heckling that he loves interacting with as part of his routine. “The good hecklers are the ones who just want to be a part of it and are intelligent and know when to come in,” he laughed. “That suits my style. I can really feed off that.” Whether you plan to be a heckler or simply a satisfied audience member, this is one show not to be missed. Akmal will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, July 11 at 8pm. Tickets are $39. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.rootyhillrsl. com.au or call 9625 5500.

Theatre for the kids KATE REID

F

ans of the award-winning picture book ‘The Gruffalo’ will be excited to hear that the theatre production of the sequel ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ will be at the Joan these school holidays. Children aged four and up will experience the magic, music and puppetry of this delightful musical which offers plenty of laughs along with some scary fun. The show revolves around the Gruffalo’s child, who ignores her father’s warning and sets out into the deep dark snowy wood. Surely his stories of the Big Bad Mouse aren’t real. Are they?

Nathan

Taylor TV NEWS

‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ is produced by CDP, the children’s theatre company responsible for adapting popular books for the stage including ‘The 13-Storey Treehouse’, ‘The 26-Storey Treehouse’, ‘Room on the Broom’ and ‘The Incredible Book Eating Boy’. With plenty of audience involvement, beautiful set design and a story that will have the kids captivated, this is one show not to be missed! ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ will be on at the Joan on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11 at 10.30am and 1pm. Tickets are $18-$22 and $72 for a family (four people, at least one adult). For more information visit www.thejoan.com.au or call 4723 7600.

Ê Now that Shane Bourne has officially been announced as the new host of ‘Dancing with the Stars’, rumours are floating about as to who the cast will be for this season. Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham is a hot favourite to join as is recent ‘My Kitchen Rules’ contestant Ash Pollard and former ‘Weekend Today’ weather presenter Emma Freedman. There’s also set to be a former sporting star involved who has played both league and rugby at the highest level. Ê Channel Seven will produce a new factual series starring comedian Billy Connolly. The three-part series, titled ‘Billy Connolly’s Tracks Across America’, will see the comedian travel across the United States by train. I certainly can’t wait to watch this especially considering his last American adventure, where he took on Route 66, was a huge hit. Look out for it soon. Ê The 2015 Tour de France will once again air on SBS this July with over 100 hours of extra coverage. SBS has all 21 stages live and exclusive, plus daily morning and evening highlight recaps, and for the first time, replays every day. The race begins on Saturday, July 4.

Ê Channel Ten will soon fast track a new US series based on a novel by James Petterson and Michael Ledwidge. ‘The Zoo’ follows a wave of violent animal attacks against humans sweeping the planet. ‘The Zoo’ premieres Thursday, July 2 at 8.30pm. Ê There’s a hot rumour doing the rounds that when ‘Fashion Police’ resumes filming on August 31, Melissa Rivers, Joan’s daughter, will join the panel. Rivers, who is also a producer of ‘Fashion Police’, will take over as a panel moderator for six shows. In a recent interview on ‘The Kyle and Jackie O Show’, Melissa Rivers said it probably wasn’t wise to bring back the show so soon after her mother’s death, with both new host Kathy Griffin and long time panellist Kelly Osbourne quitting after just a few episodes. Ê Former ‘Friends’ star Matt LeBlanc sure has another hit on his hands with his show ‘Episodes’ renewed for a fifth season. Showtime has ordered nine more episodes of LeBlanc playing a fictionalised version of himself, in the misadventures of a ‘British comedy’ lost in translation in the USA. ‘Episodes’ airs on Foxtel’s BBC First.

SKY P HIGH ENERGY

enrith RSL is one of the largest RSL Clubs in NSW with an energy bill to match. Like so many other clubs, Penrith RSL has a significant roof area which, until November 2014 was unused. After much investigation, Solar PV Commercial performed a site inspection that indicated the site was structurally and financially viable for a solar system. Solar PV Commercial offered a cost effective solution that met the Clubs financial requirements to invest into a project. This system generates 320,000 kWh a year, which equates to a $60,000 saving on energy bills. The 800 installed panels redirect all the sunlight that would normally hit 1,280 m2 of corrugated roof into clean electricity, this significantly reduces the heat transferred into the roof and air conditioning. DVD Wild

Rated MA // KATE REID ‘Wild’ is the story of Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon), a young woman who’s been worn down by the death of her mother (Laura Dern) and a pattern of destructive behaviour that led to the end of her marriage. To try to change her pattern of behaviour and get her life back on track Cheryl decides to hike 1,100 miles alone along the Pacific Crest Trail. The film is based on the best selling memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by author Cheryl Strayed. Reese Witherspoon gives a beautiful performance (for which she earned numerous Best Actress nominations) and while this type of

‘going on a journey to find yourself’ story is as old as time, Witherspoon brings a refreshing subtlety to the role of Cheryl. This is not one of those movies that pulls on the heart strings just to get a reaction. It’s honest and intriguing without being emotionally manipulative. The other star of the film is the scenery which takes you from the desert to the snow, showing off some of the most beautiful landscapes North America has to offer. Cheryl’s story is definitely one worth telling. If you love films that tackle the idea of self discovery, you’ll love ‘Wild’.

Rated M // JADE ALIPRANDI

Alpine

Yuck // KATE REID Aussie indie pop band Alpine are back with their sophomore album ‘Yuck’, the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut ‘A is For Alpine’ which earned them a nomination for Best Breakthrough Artist at the 2012 ARIA awards. As a whole the album does not disappoint. The synchronised vocals of Phoebe Baker and Lou James beautifully blend to create little pieces of quirky pop perfection. It’s sparse and delicate but somehow still a big bold album. Ranging from the laidback to the upbeat the album manages to maintain a nice flow. When writing the album Baker and James were inspired by those first world problems that make you say ‘yuck’, hence the striking title. While it doesn’t quite reach the level of their debut, ‘Yuck’ is a satisfying follow up from the Aussie sextet.

3.5 STARS

‘Hot Pursuit’ follows Rose Cooper (Reese Witherspoon), a by-the-book police officer who has grown up around her father and his line of work as a top police officer in his region. After a previous incident in the field, Cooper is stationed at the evidence desk and is made fun of by other officers.

Only brought back into the field to be a female escort for a woman testifying in another matter, Cooper’s first day outside the station walls turns to disaster when she ends up on the run with Daniella Riva (Sofia Vergara), a widow of a drug lord. With a fast moving storyline, the movie dives head first into on-the-run action with comedic one liners thrown in. Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon work well together and for this movie, were the right fit. Witherspoon did well in her role, using

a fake accent that had her portraying a whole new character compared to what she has done previously. Vergara gave the film its comedy aspect with some jokes that made you laugh out loud, and others that made you smile or smirk. A lighthearted comedy at best, ‘Hot Pursuit’ has its moments where it is quite funny but overall it didn’t make me laugh as much as I was expecting it too.

here are a couple of interesting things about the Mulligan family and their St Mary’s Vineyard 15km to the west of Penola in South Australia. One is that they’re on land that’s made up of Terra Rossa soil over limestone just like their neighbouring Coonawarra, yet they’re defined officially as within the Limestone Coast, and the other is their unusual and rewarding Carillon label. The first there’s little we can say much about, beyond that to most their wines appear more Coonawarra than Limestone Coast, but the latter we heartily suggest that you can do something about, and that is to give a try to this Carillon that’s unusually made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet France and Merlot. In 1985 Barry and Glenys Mulligan planted their first grapes, reaping the pioneering rewards of these in 1990. They made their first Carillon blend in 1999, giving it the name after the dictionary definition of carillon as “a collection of bells (in their case ‘Belles’?) that work in harmony to produce something special...” The newest-release 2013 St Mary’s Carillon is an interesting wine offering up suggestions of tobacco, cedar, plum and raisin flavours that make for a good match with red meats, or a hearty winter’s casserole. It’s $40 a bottle in 12-bottle cartons from the winery. One to note: Wine buffs who enjoy their seafood know how rewarding it can be with white fish fillets pan-fried and shared with a good Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. And one of the latter worth trying is a 2014 from Voyager Estate in WA’s Margaret River (pictured).

Jupiter and Uranus send a lucky opportunity via social media or community connections, but you may have to jump in and make a split-second decision which is your speciality. Make sure you communicate with family and work mates clearly, otherwise misunderstandings are likely.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Lady Luck is on your side this week Lions, courtesy of the Jupiter/Uranus trine. So do all you can to milk the good fortune that comes your way – especially involving personal projects, publishing, travel, education, commerce or international connections. But don’t complicate matters by overthinking things.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

The terrific Jupiter/Uranus trine favours sport, study, social events, research, creative projects, communication, conversation, commerce and travel. So you’re set for a successful and stimulating week but some caution is required. If you say the first thing that pops into your head you could find yourself in hot water.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Are people aware of the substantial amount of work you’re doing behind the scenes? Don’t be disappointed if others aren’t showing their appreciation ATM. Your efforts will be applauded further down the track. Attached Virgos – are you seeing your partner clearly? Singles – this week you’re more gullible than usual.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

It’s a wonderful week to shake up a stale marriage; start a romantic relationship; reboot a business partnership or steer a close friendship in a fabulous new direction. A dynamic new person or peer group could enter your life, bringing a breath of fresh air to tired old routines. It’s also a great time to join a group or club.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Be careful in the way you communicate, otherwise you could say too much or be misunderstood. When it comes to family members, it’s time to completely change your current modus operandi. Plenty of praise and ebullient encouragement will get you much further than random negative remarks or constant criticism.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Many Aquarians can look forward to a shift in fortune especially involving a romantic relationship or business partnership. Your mind’s buzzing with creative and innovative ideas so it’s a terrific time to broaden your mental horizons, as you communicate with family and friends from home and away.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Your career gets a welcome boost from the lucky Jupiter/Uranus trine. It’s the perfect time to launch a professional project, apply for a promotion or look for employment. If you’re doing volunteer work, others will notice and appreciate your efforts. Your moody, mysterious and sensitive Scorpio nature is emphasised.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Tricky Neptune aspects can aggravate sensitivities or trigger allergic reactions, so steer clear of food and drink that doesn’t agree with you. And avoid making important decisions [especially involving family or real estate] as your feelings are likely to change many times throughout the week.

Just make sure you have the necessary resources to avoid an eventual return to work, as you may not be able to access your pension for some time. On the flip side, there may be those who want to keep working through their 80s or even 90s. Of course, it is important to leave aside a few years to actually enjoy the

Reid NUTRITION

Do you obsess about what you should and shouldn’t eat? Find that you’ve slowly been cutting more and more food groups from your diet? Felt extreme guilt after consuming certain foods? While striving for a healthy balanced diet is a positive thing, there’s a point at which this behaviour can become detrimental to your physical health and well being. The phenomenon I’ve described has been termed Orthorexia nervosa and while it’s not yet classed as a diagnosable condition, more and more dietitians are seeing

patients who fall into the category of having an unhealthy obsession with righteous and restrictive eating habits. It’s not surprising when we consider the information that we are fed (pardon the pun) when it comes to food. We are constantly bombarded with blogs and articles telling us about how sugar is killing us or marketing some new super food that will prevent all manor of diseases.

It’s no wonder people are obsessed with making the ‘right’ choices. We’ve over complicated eating and made it this confusing and guilt ridden activity. Instinctively we know what foods are good for us and what foods should be eaten in moderation. But these days the messages have become so twisted that we’ve even started to demonise fruit. There’s a quote by Michael Pollan that often gets used to describe a balanced diet and I think it sums things up pretty well: ‘Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.’ While it’s a simplistic way of looking at eating, I think it really gets to the point of what we are aiming for when we say a healthy balanced diet. Enjoy food, try not to over consume and focus on getting plenty of vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts and whole grains into your diet. Wanting to consume a healthy diet, avoiding certain foods for ethical reasons or simply not eating something you don’t enjoy is not an issue. But if you’re finding you’re becoming obsessed with righteous eating and it’s affecting your mental and physical health it may be time to seek help from a health professional.

fruits of your labour! Blueprints Like the plans for your home or the strategies used by winning sports teams, your retirement blueprints are crucial for actually achieving your dream. Whether you’d prefer to age at home or move to one of the world’s hottest retirement spots, having a firm plan in place is crucial. For those who desire the simple things, knowing how you will fill the days once you no longer have to work should be your first consideration. Even someone who complained each week about the 9-5 workday may struggle to stave off boredom during retirement. Keeping busy is crucial for staying happy and healthy, so now is a good time to consider your weekly itinerary. Compound interest When dealing with retirement savings, the sooner you get started the better. Due to the power of compound interest, the earlier you begin putting money away, the less you actually have to invest. Confused? It’s clear to see that compound interest is on your side, if you start planning for retirement now. No matter how much you have to spare, even making small contributions now can have a big difference to your future.

Eating a Mediterranean diet has long been a byword for healthy living, but even the people who coined it are straying from it, and their waistlines are paying the price. The region is undergoing a ‘nutrition transition’ from traditional, sustainable foods towards more commercially viable products, according to a new report. Many southern Mediterranean countries, from Egypt to Lebanon, Morocco and Turkey, are piling on the kilos, struggling increasingly with obesity and chronic diet-

Changing world equals changing diets

owner and manager of Fitec david@fitec.com.au

based diseases, the UN’s food agency said. Globalisation, food marketing and changing lifestyles including changes in the roles women play in society, are altering consumption patterns in the Mediterranean, the report said. The famous diet is based on fresh vegetables, pulses and a moderate intake of fish and meat, but urban develop-

ment, depletion of natural resources, and a loss of traditional knowledge are altering the menu. Products are being increasingly sourced from outside the region with only 10 per cent of the local crop varieties cultivated in the past still grown today, which affects not only local food producers but also the environment. The study found the Mediterranean diet is nutritious, integrated in local cultures, environmentally sustainable and it supports local economies, it’s essential to continue to promote and support it. But just as the diet is being lost to things like slick food marketing and cheaply produced commercial food products, what’s just as important and sadly also being lost is the accompanying lifestyle. The importance of sitting down to a meal, hopefully sharing it with family or friends. The social contact of good food preparation using real whole food. The appreciation and gratitude that goes with this are all just as important as the food content of the meal. Remember eating a good meal should be an important part of your day so treat it like one and your health will thank you for it.

will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.” What would you do? Think Jesus was crazy? Be fearful you would miss the good things in life? That is exactly what this rich, young man thought, because in one of the most tragic scenes in the Bible, he walked away from Jesus “sad” because he loved the things of this world more. Zacchaeus was the name of

the second man. Zacchaeus was unpopular because he was a corrupt tax collector. He too was wealthy, yet when Jesus called Zacchaeus to follow him, Zacchaeus welcomed Jesus gladly and recognising his dishonesty, he announced, “Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount!” See the difference? Two lost people. Both challenged to follow Jesus. One walks away sad. The other rejoices in the good news of being forgiven, received and accepted by God. We know money doesn’t bring happiness, yet it is so hard to be convinced of it! Here is the point; walking away from Jesus will bring sadness; accepting Jesus’ call to follow him, will bring great joy.

In the Bible’s book of Luke we read about two men who met Jesus. The first was an impressive, powerful rich young man who had it all, except one thing. He had no certainty about where he would spend eternity. Luke tells us how he asked Jesus, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” After talking for a while, Jesus gave him the bottom line, “You lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you

TOYOTA

Corolla gets a mini makeover

oyota has revamped the styling, driving enjoyment and features of its Corolla hatch while improving fuel economy across the range. An extensive exterior redesign introduces two distinctive new looks to the hatch versions of Australia’s best-selling car, increasing Corolla’s appeal to a wider range of customers. Ascent and Ascent Sport grades receive a classic European-inspired outline while the higher SX and ZR grades adopt a sportier character that incorporates a body kit. Corolla’s more dynamic exterior proportions are complemented by interior upgrades including new audio systems, suspension refinements focused on ride comfort and efficiency gains that cut fuel use by as much as 7.6 per cent. Sensory quality in the cabin has been raised with a cleaner design for the dash panel and centre console along with new instrument gauges, fresh upholstery and satin chrome-plated ornaments. Corolla Ascent hatch is now fitted with a reversing camera, making it standard across the entire Corolla range. The camera’s image is displayed on new touch-screen monitors that are also used to operate the upgraded audio system. The new designs, added equipment and engineering updates are accompanied by small price increases on most models.

Wanderers sign fresh talent for new season p.67 NRL ensures cheap Grand Final tickets

GIANT BLOW Giants ruckman Shane Mumford is out for the season NATHAN TAYLOR

@natetaylor87

fter winning a record amount of games this season and being on track for their first ever finals berth, the GWS Giants have been dealt a massive blow with experienced ruckman Shane Mumford out for the season with an ankle injury. The 28-year-old suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of last Sunday’s match against Collingwood and will now undergo an ankle reconstruction. The surgery will repair a torn deltoid ligament in Mumford’s left ankle. Mumford was the Giants Club Champion

A

in 2014, taking home the Kevin Sheedy Medal, and has been in career best form this season. “Shane’s an important part of our footy club and everyone’s aware of what he’s done so far in his short time here,” Giants coach, Leon Cameron said. “It’s obviously disappointing to lose him but the welfare of the player has to come first and the recommendation came pretty strongly to have a major operation on his ankle. It’s probably a four to six month recovery, so come pre-season he’ll be ready to roll.” Meanwhile, co-captain Phil Davis will be sidelined for six to eight weeks with an ankle syndesmotic injury.

Midfielder Stephen Coniglio will miss the next two to three weeks with a grade two AC joint injury also suffered in the final term at the MCG, adding further salt to the Giants’ wounds. Defender Joel Platfull’s broken ribs and punctured lung will keep him out for the next six to eight weeks as well. In better injury news, defender Lachie Plowman will play his first match of the season this weekend. Plowman dislocated his elbow in January and will line up for the UWS Giants in the NEAFL on Saturday. GWS will look to bounce back into form when they host North Melbourne at Spotless Stadium this Saturday at 4.35pm.

THE NRL has reduced the price of 2015 Grand Final tickets to as low as $45 to ensure all fans have access to the biggest game of the year. CEO Dave Smith said he wanted to see as many members and loyal fans at the Grand Final as possible. It follows criticism in recent years over the prices charged for marquee NRL events such as the Grand Final and State of Origin. Under the new pricing structure, club members will be able to buy tickets for as little as $45 as an early bird special. Tickets for members of the general public will range from $65 in the pre-sale period which begins on Monday. Family tickets will range from $170 (down from $190 last year) and children’s tickets from $30 compared with $50 last year. Mr Smith said the NRL was making the Grand Final affordable for all fans. “We’ve actually reduced the price of tickets this year because we want everyone to have a chance to see the best two teams in the competition in the Grand Final,” he said. “Naturally there will be tickets for all categories of supporters – from regular fans and families through to the corporate customers. “But, importantly, we are making the Grand Final affordable for our most loyal supporters.” Head of Marketing, Lewis Pullen said fans who bought tickets early would save the most. “Only in Grand Final week will our prices be brought into line with last year’s prices when we had an $80 entry price,” he said. “So our message to fans is to get in early and secure a seat when the discount is at its greatest.”

he Nepean women’s first division hockey team have gone home with their heads held high despite falling apart in the final game at the recent NSW Hockey Association’s State Championships. Played at the Macarthur Regional Hockey Complex over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend, the experienced Nepean team combined brilliantly to move through the competition rounds of the tournament unbeaten. Nepean then went on to defeat a strong Illawarra-South Coast team 2-1 in the semi-final before falling at the final hurdle to a powerful Metropolitan South West side 5-0 in the Championship decider. Nepean goalkeeper Jemma Laverty was outstanding for her side, and was well supported in defence by Corrina Buckley, Natasha Christian, Chantal Knowles and Michelle Andreatta. Captain Belinda Brooks, Caitlin Burns and Erin Burns were strong in the midfield with Vanessa Kristaly valiant up front for the entire tournament. Whilst disappointed with the 5-0 thrashing in the final, the team were pleased with their consistently strong performances during the competition.

The two Nepean State Championship teams provided a delightful family touch with several mother and daughter combinations Following the competition, Vanessa Kristaly and Natasha Christian were selected in the NSW Country team to compete at the National Country Championships in Wollongong this August. Meanwhile, for the first time in years, Nepean also entered a third division team into the tournament. The team, which was made up of young and experienced players, finished a respectable fifth – proving very competitive in every game. The side was awarded the Fair Play certificate for general sportsmanship in their division during the weekend, a well deserved honour.

Football Wanderers add new recruits as club builds for the future HENRY HINDE

fter the recent mass exodus of players, the Western Sydney Wanderers have announced the signing of fullback Scott Neville until the end of the 2016/17 season. The 26-year-old is set to add further defensive steel to Western Sydney’s backline which has already been bolstered this off-season with the recent acquisitions of Scott Jamieson and Jonathan Aspropotamitis. Born in England, Neville moved to Australia as a nine-year-old and was part of the Australian Institute of Sport setup before joining Perth Glory where he played 63 matches including the 2012 Grand Final. The former Australia U23 representative, who was based in Newcastle for the past three seasons, said he was delighted to join the Wanderers. “I’m really excited and looking forward to the new challenge ahead and can’t wait to meet the boys, get started and improve as a player,” Neville said. “The whole club in general is a massive attraction. Wanderers are one of the biggest clubs in Australia and Tony Popovic is one of the best coaches.”

A

Following the news that the Wanderers have parted ways with popular Japanese duo Yojiro Takahagi and Yusuke Tanaka, the club also announced the signing of midfielder Jacob Pepper until the end of the 2016/17 season. Pepper, 23, will bolster the club’s midfield stocks with the former Olyroo proving himself to be one of the best up-and-coming players over recent A-League seasons. Having spent two years in the Football NSW development pathway, the boxto-box midfielder was picked-up by the Newcastle Jets and made his debut in 2010. However, it wasn’t until the 2011/12 season where he really made his mark, with a number of barnstorming performances and goals. Seeking a new challenge and an opportunity to better himself as a footballer after five seasons in the Hunter, Pepper said western Sydney was the perfect fit. “I’m really excited to be joining the Wanderers, I’m super excited for the challenge and I thank Popa and the club for giving me a chance and I look forward to a successful two years,” he said. “Wanderers have got a good coach and good staff that can provide the pathway for me to become a better footballer.” More announcements are expected.

ids from Emu Plains Football Club are hoping their first major tournament will be a huge success when they compete at next month’s prestigious Kanga Cup. Held every year in Canberra, the Kanga Cup is the largest international youth football tournament in the southern hemisphere, featuring teams from around Australia and across the world. The Emu Plains U9’s team will be just one of 355 teams involved in this year’s Kanga Cup, which runs from July 5 to July 10. Coach of the team, Ossie Lewis, said he’s been involved with the side since 2011 when the boys were just five-years-old. “I have been blessed to work with such great kids as well as training them and teaching them basic life skills other than football,” he said. “These boys turn up to every training session and love to participate in all aspects of the game.” Lewis said he long dreamed of hitting the road with his team to compete in a tournament like the famous Kanga Cup. “I thought this year was the right time to register and take the youngsters on their

Kids from Emu Plains Football Club can’t wait to participate in the Kanga Cup first football tour to compete against other teams from around the nation,” he said. “Football in western Sydney has been attracting a fair bit of attention of late, with the boys wanting to follow in the footsteps of their idols from the Wanderers and Sydney FC.” The Emu Plains U9’s team will be hold-

ing a special Fundraising Garage Sale next Saturday, June 27 from 8pm on the corner of Forbes and Troy Street, Emu Plains, to raise funds to assist with entry costs for the expensive tournament. “We are one of the rare teams from Penrith that will enter this tournament due to the cost this tour brings to all fami-

lies participating,” Lewis said. “We have a wonderful bunch of kids that have ongoing support by great western Sydney families.” The team is also on the hunt for sponsorship from local businesses. Anyone interested should contact Ossie Lewis via email at ossielewis@optusnet.com.au.

he Penrith Emus have produced one of their better performances of the season, despite going down to West Harbour 57-14. It was a much improved effort from the competition’s worst side, who struggled to score any points for three straight weeks. Speaking with the Weekender, Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu said he was very pleased with his side’s performance since returning from a bye last Saturday. “At halftime it was only 24-14… it was very promising, very good,” he said. “The boys put a bit of pressure on, started to play, put some phases together and wallah… scored two tries.” After working on a number of things including the ruck, breakdown and how to apply pressure during their weekend off, Tu’ipulotu said last weekend’s game at Nepean Rugby Park was a treat to watch. “I think our game against Randwick (Penrith lost 31-15) was our best performance of the year but this wasn’t far behind, we’re certainly getting there,” he said. Making it hard for the Emus against the Pirates was the fact they lost three players

Around the grounds BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side have continued their season from hell, going down to Sutherland 93-83 last weekend. Ben Kearins was once again Penrith’s best player with 20 points and eight rebounds. Penrith remain in last place and will battle the fourth-placed Norths Bears this Sunday afternoon at Penrith Sports Stadium. BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers women’s Waratah Championship League side are continuing to rise back up the standings with an 85-78 win over Sutherland last weekend. Alicia Poto was Penrith’s best performer with 32 points and 10 rebounds. Panthers coach Curtis Sardi said he was impressed with his side’s second half performance: “We had no defensive effort in the first half but we changed that in the second and made an effort to win each possession battle, make stops then score”. Penrith’s women have climbed to fourth and will battle the secondplaced Norths Bears on Sunday in Penrith.

to yellow cards throughout the game. Sam Siaki, Paula Makasini and Ikuna He Ngaue were all sent to the bin for a range of indiscretions. “The three yellow cards didn’t help our team,” Tu’ipulotu admitted. “One was valid, the other two I need to look at the video. Playing with 14 men for 30 minutes doesn’t help anyone. “I’ll be emailing the referee this week to find out what we can do to make it better next time.” This Saturday the Emus will return to Nepean Rugby Park to take on the eighthplaced Northern Suburbs. The last time both sides played was in Round 4 when Penrith were thrashed 66-7. “Norths are a very young outfit and like to throw the ball around,” Tu’ipulotu said. “We’ve got to front them up front first and play to our strength which is our forward pack.” He said securing their first win of the year was not beyond possible. “The boys know if they stick to the game plan and play with confidence, they’ll score even more points. We’ll see how we go,” he said. Kick off between Penrith and Northern Suburbs is at 3pm.

to Newcastle this Sunday to take on the fifth-placed Northstars. AFL: The Penrith Rams have produced their best performance of the season, thrashing the Randwick City Saints 116-49 in the latest round of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition. Ben McGovern with six goals and Daniel McDonald with five goals were Penrith’s standout performers. The fifth-placed Rams will battle the fourth-placed Moorebank Magpies this Saturday morning at Spotless Stadium. The game, which begins at 11.20am, will act as the curtain raiser to the GWS Giants vs North Melbourne game later that afternoon. AFL: The Penrith Ramettes women’s team are back in the winner’s circle, defeating the UTS Shamrocks 37-13. The fifth-placed Ramettes will play the eighth-placed Moorebank Magpies this Sunday at Greygums Oval from 12pm. PADDLING: Leonay’s Jessica Fox will return to the water later today, June 19, to defend her world champion status at the first ICF slalom World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic. The 21-year-old said she wasn’t yet feeling the pressure as current dual world champion and was excited for the opening World Cup race of the season. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.

ine young sporting stars from Penrith and St Marys have been presented with Local Sporting Champions grants worth $500. The grants were handed out by Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott last week during a ceremony at Westfield Penrith. The Local Sporting Champions program is designed to support young people participating in competition at regional, state, national or international level as an athlete, coach or official. Ms Scott said the grant program was a great way to nurture talented local athletes and assist them in achieving their goals. “Playing sport is synonymous with the Nepean Valley and it is excellent to see so many people from our region compete at a state or national level,” she said. “I congratulate all winners and wish them every success in their chosen sporting fields.” Westfield Penrith centre manager Paul Stonebridge also congratulated the rising sports stars. “We’re proud to host this ceremony at our centre, to celebrate and support young people
