P
enrith Mayor Karen McKeown has slammed Transport for NSW after their decision to permanently convert a longstanding 15 minute parking zone outside Penrith Station into a taxi rank. The parking area on Jane Street has been used by Penrith residents for decades to drop-off and pick-up family and friends at the busy Penrith Train Station. Last Friday, August 19, it was permanently converted to a taxi rank as part of ongoing upgrade works at the station. No additional parking or replacement spots were offered. Cr McKeown told the Weekender that Council made several recommendations to Transport for NSW when they were approached about the idea, all of which were overlooked. “Council has absolutely no input to the decision to make that a taxi zone – we argued vehemently against it,â€? she said. “We made several recommendations when we were approached about it including for the space to be a shared zone and that the taxi zone be relocated elsewhere within the precinct area so that the drop-off/pick-up zone could remain in play – it’s an issue of convenience and safety for commuters and we want something done now to fix it.â€? State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said he has approached the Transport Minister about the issue, which has enraged the community on social media. Story continues on Âť p. 6

Missing woman most likely dead, Coroner says TROY DODDS
issing Cranebrook woman Cheryl Ardler is most likely dead, a NSW Coroner has ruled. Deputy State Coroner Teresa O’Sullivan said Ms Ardler, who has not been seen since 2012, was on the balance of probabilities “killed by a person or persons unknown”. A report into Ms Ardler’s disappearance was delivered by Magistrate O’Sullivan last Friday. “The lack of the police signs of life checks to reveal any activity on relevant accounts or services, the cessation of her Centrelink benefits, the failure of Cheryl to contact any members of her family and the suspicious activity on her Facebook account would all point decisively to Cheryl being deceased,” the report said. “The evidence points to the fact that Cheryl died between 5 December and 25 December 2012.” Ms Ardler was 41 when she disappeared and hasn’t been seen since early December 2012. Despite hearing of previous self-harm attempts, Magistrate O’Sullivan said it was unlikely that Ms Ardler took her own life. Ms Ardler’s Facebook account played an
M
intriguing role in the investigation, with her account showing signs of activity in 2013. Detectives confirmed that over 100 activations occurred post December 2012. They gave evidence at the Coroner’s inquest that police went through each and every IP address but were not able to link the activations to an individual device. Police attempted to access Facebook records via the FBI in the United States, but the request was declined. “There was evidence provided to the inquest to suggest that other persons, in particular Cheryl’s de-facto partner Dennis French, had full access to her Facebook account,” Magistrate O’Sullivan said. “Sean Carpenter, who resided for a time with Dennis French and Cheryl Ardler between May and October 2012, stated that Cheryl accessed Facebook through Dennis’ phone.” The inquest heard that Mr French and Ms Ardler had regularly argued about Ms Ardler’s Facebook activity. Mr French has been named as the only person of interest in relation to Ms Ardler’s disappearance and suspected death. “Mr French made a global objection to giving any evidence on the basis that to answer any questions likely to be asked of him would have the tendency to incrimi-

potential liability for criminal charges, I did not find that the interests of justice required that Mr French give evidence over his objection.” The Coroner recommended that the case be referred to the Unsolved Homicide Squad.

Parking headaches worsen Few people would deny that the major upgrade to Penrith Station that is currently underway is long overdue and much-needed. Unfortunately, none of us can twitch our nose or click our fingers like Samantha from ‘Bewitched’ and complete the work without disruption to commuters, but the decision to remove a 15 minute parking area near the station as part of the works and replace it with a taxi zone, which is reported on our front page this week, is curious at best. Curious because no alternative has been offered after the closing of a parking area that has been used by people to drop-off and pick-up family and friends for more than 30 years. Curious too because it appears Transport for NSW completely ignored requests by Council to not go ahead with the idea and find an alternative option. It is horrible timing for current councillors with the Local Government Election just weeks away. The spaces that were previously well utilised by those picking up or dropping off commuters have simply disappeared, and the answer from Transport for NSW seems to be, essentially, do your best and find somewhere else to wait/park. It reeks of arrogance that Transport for NSW issues a community notification detailing the taxi rank’s relocation, but fails to provide a solution to the parking it has taken away to facilitate it. People understand the cost of progress, and ultimately, they accept change. But when you create a problem and don’t identify a solution, you generate angst within the community.

Health system gets thumbs up Last week I spent a few days in both Blue Mountains Hospital and Nepean Hospital to have a couple of surgeries. I speak a lot about the health system in this column but I wanted to take a moment to commend the staff at both facilities. From the doctors and nurses down to the admin staff, the overall experience and attention to detail was superb and the care I received was second to none. Despite the roadblocks often in their way when it comes to funding and infrastructure, the vast majority of the doctors and nurses in our public system are pillars of the community and very much the real ‘heroes’ amongst us.

Just get on with it I’m amazed that senior politicians continue to dance around the issue of marriage equality like it’s a dead mouse they’re too scared to pick up off the kitchen floor. Rather than having the courage and foresight to just push ahead with the inevitable marriage equality legislation, we’re going to spend months bickering and arguing about a plebiscite. When same-sex marriage is eventually legalised in Australia, and it will be, it will create some extreme reactions from those who believe we’re destroying the sanctity of marriage (a sanctity which in Australia includes high divorce rates and a domestic violence epidemic). For the majority of Australians, however, legalising same-sex marriage will simply be rubber stamping what we all know makes sense. The sooner it happens, the better.

The dumping of a parking area may seem like a small detail in the big scheme of things, but it’s the little things like this that build frustration. In the case of the parking area, now taxi rank, Transport for NSW has made a dud call. The highly paid experts who made the decision need to have another look at the situation and get a healthy dose of common sense. Decisions like this are just further evidence that a pattern of “act now, think later” has developed within the State Government. From stadium strategies to lock-out laws and the recent greyhound ban, there’s holes developing in Mike Baird’s ship quicker than the Titanic posticeberg, and the biggest problem seems to be a lack of clear communication and consultation. The government has a significant image problem it needs to quickly address.

ver 200 new police officers are on the beat across New South Wales, and four of them are making their mark in St Marys. One of the biggest intakes of recruits for the station, the newly appointed probationary constables hit the ground running this week and got straight to work. Speaking with the Weekender on their induction day, Probationary Constable B.J Duncan said he can’t wait to get back into it after he left the force more than 14 years ago. “I started out on police radio as a civilian but I’m keen to get into the information technology side of it now,” Constable Duncan said. “I’m really excited as it has been a long journey just to get here, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and meeting people who need help.” Constable Duncan said what makes a good police officer is knowing how to handle any situation. “Someone who has the integrity to handle all different dynamics of the public and also being able to understand people,” he said. Residents demand re-think on taxi zone relocation at station Story continued from » p. 1 “We are significantly upgrading Penrith Station and I have spoken to the Transport Minister about having part of the Jane Street drop-off bay kept for the general public during the construction period,” he said. Local residents are venting their frustration on various social media pages, and in letters to politicians, demonstrating the popularity of the parking and pick-up area. Glenmore Park resident, Mike Ahern, who used the drop-off zone as recently as last week, said the changes inconvenienced him and his wife, who are both 72. “It’s going to create a lot of inconvenience for old, as well as young people, including parents who pick their kids up late at night,” he said. “I would think Transport for NSW would have given a bit more thought to it and considered the people of Penrith.” South Penrith resident, Simon Mann, uses the zone every day. Using the facilities on the northern side of the station would add another 20 minutes to his day. “It’s a really big inconvenience for someone that lives in South Penrith, to go all the way around and there’s no clean lap to do of the block to do so,” he said.

Photo: Melinda Jane A spokesperson for Transport NSW said a permanent ‘kiss and ride’ area will be incorporated into the final design however, an existing 15 minute parking area remains available in the car park east of the Station Master’s residence. “We will continue to look for additional options to minimise the impact on the local community and customers during construction,” the spokesperson said. A spokesperson for Penrith Council said Council is writing to the NSW Premier, Minister for Transport and Local Members seeking a solution to the issue.

Restrictions frustrate new residents
Fire damages St Marys factory
Council has no plans to implement parking exemption plan in Thornton DALE DRINKWATER
f you thought parking around Penrith Station couldn’t get any more frustrating, you were wrong. New residents in Thornton Estate are being forced to park in the Penrith Station commuter car park all day, and take away already limited spaces from those struggling to find a park. Why? They’re trying to avoid being fined in the 2P and 4P restricted parking areas in front of their new homes. One furious resident moved to the estate with their partner to be within walking distance of the train station to commute to work every day. The driveway underneath their apartment is occupied by the double-storey three-bedroom home it is adjacent to, so their two vehicles both need to be removed from their street every day, or face a parking fine. “It’s ridiculous that we could live so close to the station and have to drive there because we’re too scared to leave our cars in front of our own home,” said the resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “Fair enough about four hour parking, but make some exceptions for the people that are paying good money to live there.”

fire ripped through Cardboard King in St Marys last weekend. At about 12.25pm on Saturday, August 20, an employee at the factory, located in Kommer Place, noticed a large fire in the premises. There were no other employees in the building at the time. The man attempted to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful and emergency services were called. Fire crews from St Marys, Penrith Fire Station, Regentville Fire and Rescue, Mount Druitt Fire Station, Blacktown Fire Station, Riverstone Fire and Rescue NSW, Huntingwood Fire Station and Schofields Fire and Rescue NSW all responded to the call. The male employee was treated at the scene after he sustained minor burns to his face and hands. No other buildings were affected during the blaze.

Parking restrictions are causing problems in Thornton Estate. Photo: Dale Drinkwater Penrith Council does not offer exemption permits for residents of Thornton. When asked why, a Council spokesperson did not provide a direct reason. “Council supports these restrictions and is responsible for the ongoing implementation. Council will continue to monitor the operation of the parking restrictions as the precinct develops,” a Council spokesperson said. “Appropriate off-street parking has been provided for each dwelling at Thornton Estate.”
However, UrbanGrowth NSW, who masterplanned the community, confirmed this was not true. “A handful of studios were sold without off-street parking to provide more affordable housing options to a wider range of purchasers, specifically first home buyers looking to enter the property market,” a spokesperson said. A spokesperson for Thornton Developers, St Hilliers and First Point Projects, identified that five per cent of dwellings will not have off street parking.

Insurance star A Penrith insurance professional has been recognised in a list of the industry’s 50 most promising young stars. Glen Swift of Action Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd has been included in Insurance Business magazine’s 2016 Young Guns list, which features professionals aged 35 and under who are making an impact in the insurance channel. A record number of nominations came in this year from brokerages, underwriting agencies, insurance companies and law firms around the country. “Given this report features only a snapshot of the promising local talent, there’s certainly reason to be confident the industry in Australia will remain in capable hands for some time to come,” said Tim Garratt, editor of Insurance Business magazine.
New look trains Passengers travelling on the Blue Mountains intercity line from 2019 will have their own charging station in their seat, aboard new trains announced by the State Government. The seats will also have cup holders and tray tables, be wider, covered in fabric and have arm rests with more space than the current carriages. Minister for Transport Andrew Constance announced the new generation double deck trains last week. “For customers travelling more lengthy trips, these trains will be more spacious, more comfortable and have features never before seen on our long distance services,” he said.

Dishlickers given marching orders Official: Greyhound racing to be shut down in New South Wales next year JADE ALIPRANDI
t’s official – greyhound racing will come to an end in NSW next year. A Bill to shut down the industry was passed in State Parliament in the early hours of Wednesday morning by 49 votes to 30. “I am pleased the Parliament has strongly supported the Government’s decision, because it is the right one, even though it has been a difficult one,” said NSW Premier, Mike Baird. It’s devastating news to many involved in the industry, including protesters who set up camp outside Penrith State MP Stuart Ayres’ office last Friday. The group of locals heavily involved in the sport, from trainers to workers in the industry, attempted to gain the support of Mr Ayres to vote against the Bill. Local greyhound trainer, John, who has been in the industry for over 20 years, told the Weekender he doesn’t know what he will do if the decision isn’t reversed. “I couldn’t sleep for three days when I found out,” he said. “I have eight dogs and can’t move to another state to continue this – I don’t want to leave my family. “It’s going to affect a lot of people like those in the industry who are already

Labor rallies the troops on funding Healthy crowd expected to attend protest as Nepean Hospital infrastructure remains in the spotlight DALE DRINKWATER
abor is hoping hundreds of people will attend a rally this Sunday and help put pressure on the NSW Government to fund upgrades for Nepean Hospital. At the hospital on Monday, State Member for Londonderry Prue Car and Federal Member for Lindsay Emma Husar, announced they are pulling all of their people power together. Ms Car said the rally will begin at the corner of Somerset Street and Rodgers Street at 1pm on Sunday, August 28, and protesters will walk to the Nepean Hospital entrance on Derby Street. “Opposition Leader Luke Foley will be here, and we will be inviting all members of the community who want to come and join the campaign to save Nepean Hospital,” she said. “This rally is the next stage of the campaign to get the Baird Government to take seriously the problems that are at Nepean Hospital.” The State Government did allocate $1 million in funding for planning work for the hospital in May’s Budget, but Ms Car said it’s not enough.
L
Londonderry MP Prue Car and Lindsay MP Emma Husar. Photo: Melinda Jane “Even though this hospital needs in excess of $370 million for the Stage 4 upgrade, the Baird Government only allocated $1 million in the last Budget,” she said. “This is about putting pressure on Stuart Ayres, Mike Baird and Jillian Skinner to
come through with the money we need for Nepean Hospital.” According to Ms Husar, health care budget cuts from a previous Abbott Government left state governments with gaps in health care, that are affecting locals on all fronts.
She said nurses and doctors at Nepean are doing everything they can, but are chronically understaffed. “It’s one thing to upgrade it physically, but the recurrent funding that provides for the doctors, nurses and associated staffing is really important too,” she said.

L AW a n d O R D E R From The Courts: Your Complete Legal Wrap COMPILED BY ALENA HIGGINS. OUR COURT REPORTING IS SPONSORED BY LOCAL LAW FIRM COMPLETE LEGAL & CONVEYANCING.
It’s not Christmas: Lawyer’s bold request refused
A lawyer who boldly requested a heavily reduced sentence has been told only miracles could help his client avoid conviction. Lealaisalanoa Too, 27, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with mid-range drink driving, unaccompanied learner, failing to display L-plates and driving with an unrestrained passenger. In a daring move, the defendant’s lawyer asked Magistrate Stephen Corry to proceed without recording a conviction, but His Honour flat out refused. “You’d require me to be Santa Claus and this to be Christmas,” he said. “And it isn’t.” Magistrate Corry pointed out the accused was supposed to have a zero alcohol limit, be accompanied by a licenced driver, ensure all his passengers wore their seat belts and remember to display his L-plates – all of which were breached. “One can only speculate why his Lplates were not displayed,” he added. He was convicted, fined $1,300 and barred from driving for 12 months.
Drunk man missed his train stop, fired up at police
A man who fired an expletive-laden exchange at police after passing out on a train has been ordered to enter a 12-month good behaviour bond. Emanuel Kual, 19, faced Penrith Local Court on Tuesday charged with resist and intimidate police. The court heard the defendant had consumed about 10 schooners of fullstrength beer before getting on the train and had meant to get off at Parramatta but passed out and woke up at Penrith. The court was told police were trying to assist the young man who peppered them with foul language and abuse. “Mr Kual, you must understand the emphasis on rehabilitation is lost in the Local Court,” Magistrate Susan McIntyre said, referring to the differences in his previous
dealings with the Children’s Court. “There are adult consequences for your behaviour.”
Man who “got caught up in the moment” ordered off the road
Anthony William Fowler will spend eight months off the road after being busted drink driving. Mr Fowler told Penrith Local Court last Thursday he “got caught up in the moment” after completing a six-month project at Fernhill Estate and had a few beers “with the boys”. He told the court he doesn’t normally drink. “If I have a drink I really pay for it,” he said. “I used to like a drink before I got chron’s (disease).” Magistrate Stephen Corry said he was skating on thin ice, seeing as this was his third time before the court for drink driving. “The fact remains, anyone who is consuming alcohol and driving is putting the community at risk,” Magistrate Corry said. He was convicted and fined $800.
Man snatched bag, then waited to be caught
A Jamisontown man who snatched a bag from a woman then “hung around” until he was caught has been ordered to enter a two-year supervised good behaviour bond. Appearing from the doc, Steven Craig Alcorn, 40, faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with steal from person. Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said it was not difficult to draw a link between Mr Alcorn’s mental illness and the commissioning of the offence and urged him to stay off illicit drugs. “Now Mr Alcorn, your first entry in terms of a criminal record is a mighty serious one,” she said. “It must have been very frightening for the woman whose bag you snatched.”
He was handed a number of Section 9 bonds with a condition that he comply with Community Corrections’ supervision and his community treatment order.
Man to defend animal crulety charges in November
Lachlan McCleod has pleaded not guilty to a number of animal cruelty matters. Mr McCleod appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with failing to provide medical treatment and proper and sufficient food for a dog. His matter is listed for hearing on November 30.
Magistrate sends stiff warning over drug possession
on a driveway comatose and smashed a police car window when the night went pear-shaped. “It’s lucky you don’t have any previous antecedence or I would seriously be thinking about sending you to jail today,” Magistrate Corry said. “The police don’t have to put up with this. Having alcohol in your system is no excuse.” He was fined $4,000, handed a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $459.70 in compensation to NSW Police.
Fines for damaging desk and possessing stolen goods
Paul Dian Piliu has been warned to get clean after he was nabbed in possession of a prohibited drug. “Look, if you keep using drugs and keep coming to court we’ve got to get serious about it and that might affect your liberty,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell told Mr Piliu when he fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday. Magistrate Clisdell said he would slap him with a stiff, $750 fine in order to reduce his spare money for narcotics. “Don’t come back a fourth time,” he warned.
Nathan Peter Burnie has been hit with a fine after pleading guilty to damaging property and possessing stolen goods. Mr Burnie rejected the opportunity to read the facts when he appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday, despite being warned of the consequences. “Nup, I don’t want to read them,” he said. “Well, whatever I read you’re stuck with,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell cautioned. He was fined $500 for damaging a desk with permanent marker and $300 for possessing stolen LED Energizer lights.
Massive fine after man’s drunken altercation with police
Senior citizen banned from driving
A night on the drink has turned costly for Glenn Ramon Fancey after he racked up more than $4,000 worth of fines following a drunken altercation with police. The forklift driver, 24, appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with assault police, resist police and damage property. Mr Fancey’s lawyer contended the new dad had matured since the birth of his four-month-old, but Magistrate Stephen Corry was sceptical, saying if this was the case why was he out drinking to excess when he should have been at home. The court heard Mr Fancey ended up
A grandmother whose bad driving seriously injured two people has been ordered off the road. Lynette Joy Keans, 70, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with negligent driving. The court heard the senior citizen had been driving for almost 48 years and only had three infringements attached to her record. But Magistrate Stephen Corry said it was clear the defendant should have been in a position to avoid the accident. She was convicted, disqualified for 12 months and fined $1,000.

Kingswood: Woman to front court after police pursuit
A woman led police on a pursuit when she refused to stop for them on the weekend. At about 6.50pm on Sunday, August 21, police were patrolling Jamison Road, Kingswood, when they attempted to stop a vehicle. The 19-year-old Blaxland woman refused to stop, ignoring police instructions and continued to drive. Police continued to follow her onto Parker Street, Kingswood. She continued to drive but eventually came to a stop at the end of Torton Place, Penrith, where she was arrested. She was charged with ‘police pursuit not stop’, ‘drive dangerously’ and ‘learner not accompanied by driver’. She will appear in Newtown Local Court on Tuesday, September 13.

The alleged offender is described as 40-years-old, Pacific Islander in appearance, about 180cm tall and was wearing a grey hooded jumper and black track pants at the time of the alleged attack. Police are hoping CCTV from the surrounding businesses will help in the investigation.
Penrith: Man in go-kart leads police on chase through streets
A woman was caught driving on a suspended licence when she was stopped by police last week. At about 7.00pm on Monday, August 15, police were patrolling Dunheved Road, Werrington when they stopped a motor vehicle and had a conversation with the driver. The 30-year-old Mount Pritchard woman spoke with police. Checks were made on her licence which revealed she was suspended. The woman was unaware of her suspension and she was issued with a licence suspension notice.
A man was charged with numerous offences after he was allegedly caught driving a go-kart on Penrith streets. At about 12.40pm on Wednesday, August 17, police saw the 20-year-old Penrith man allegedly driving the go-kart along Lawson Street, Penrith. He continued on to High Street where police began to follow him. He continued along Woodriff Street, and turned on to York Road where he did a few laps of the oval at Jamison Park before coming out on to Batt Street. The man then turned into Robertson Street, which presented a dead end and he was forced to leave the go-kart and attempted to escape police. He was caught, arrested and charged with ‘unregistered motor vehicle’, ‘uninsured motor vehicle’, ‘unlicenced driver’ and ‘police pursuit’. He was bailed and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, September 5.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Transferring property after a break-up Are you married or in a de-facto relationship that has broken down resulting in the need to transfer real estate from one party to another? Unfortunately marriages and de-facto relationships break down all the time. If following such a relationship breakdown a house that is jointly owned needs to be transferred from one party to another as a result of a property settlement, it is important that you have proper legal advice. Under Section 68 of the Duties Act 1997, a property transfer is exempt from stamp duty if the transfer is the result of the breakup of a marriage, de-facto relationship or domestic relationship. There are important technical requirements that need to be complied with to make sure there is no stamp duty on the transaction, which will save you thousands of dollars: 1. If you are married you must have a Financial Agreement in place under the Family Law Act 1975 or some other form of written agreement evidencing the fact that the breakdown of your marriage is irretrievable and you have decided to split
the matrimonial assets; 2. If you are in a de-facto relationship you must have a Financial Agreement in place under the Family Law Act 1975 or Court Orders such as Consent Orders. Only a family lawyer can prepare these for you; 3. If you are in a domestic relationship you must have Court Orders in place dividing the assets of each party or a Termination Agreement in accordance with the Property (Relationships) Act 1984. Similar rules apply in the context of transfers of property between married and de-facto couples whereby you can obtain a stamp duty exemption if as a result of the transfer the property will be held by the couple as joint tenants or tenants in common and equal shares. The most common context where this arises is where one party to the relationship already owns real estate before the relationship commences and later wishes to transfer a share of the property to their partner. If you need family law advice or property law advice, contact one of our lawyers today on 4704 9991.

Development activity is delivering diverse housing options for Penrith’s growing population – which is expected to increase by 60,000 by 2031. Our priority is creating jobs close to home, for our growing community. 65 per cent of Penrith residents leave the city each day to find work and this loss of talent and productivity presents a huge opportunity for local job creation. We’re dedicated to finding partners to help us deliver innovative and remarkable results for our residents. We want to help provide between 42,000 to 55,000 additional local jobs by 2031. I’m confident we can reach our targets for a number of reasons. We have the leadership; we have investors eager to help us; and we have the people to make it happen.

Penrith was under the spotlight at a Western Sydney Business Chamber event on Wednesday, August 24. More than 170 attendees – leaders of business and major institutions – heard of the incredible momentum and potential currently in Penrith City. There has been sustained private investment realised over the past five years. More than $3.5 billion in development applications were determined in that time and there is another $2 billion in current applications pending. These developments, coupled with the future Western Sydney Airport and the $2.55 billion Sydney Science Park at Luddenham, ensure Penrith’s future as the heart of the New West. Sydney can no longer be viewed as one city. Sydney is the global city, Parramatta is the central city and the third city is the corridor between the North West and South West Growth Centres. We are at the heart of that growth belt.

Living well with dementia
Driving home message on safety Council candidate wants better driveway safety to be a focus DALE DRINKWATER
ot everyone has a pool, but everyone has a driveway, and that’s why Penrith Council candidate Sue Day is pushing for driveway safety to be a Council focus. Ms Day is running in South Ward for the upcoming September 10 Council Election, and is working to gain momentum for a driveway safety campaign she said is as important as past successful swim safety campaigns. “We are the first ones to acknowledge that driveway safety is a complex issue and there is no single solution,” she said. “But at the Local Government level, the recommended guidelines and programs, if supported, may help in a reduction in the incidence of driveway-related trauma. “There is no doubt that any measures are not substitutes for active and close supervision of small children, however, promoting awareness programs like these can play an important part.” Between 2001 and 2010, an average of seven children were killed each year and 60 were seriously injured after being hit or run over by a motor vehicle at home, according to the Bureau of Infrastructure Transport and Regional Economics.

Penrith Council South Ward candidate Sue Day with concerned parents, Shannon and Rebecca Carroll and their children. Photo: Melinda Jane Unfortunately, a child known to South Penrith residents Shannon and Rebecca Carroll, became one of those sad statistics, when a father ran over his two-yearold son in their own driveway. Since then, driveway safety has been at the forefront of their minds and, along
with Ms Day, they believe a program needs to be implemented to reduce the chance of other families going through similar anguish. The first step is the distribution of a flyer to help educate parents and provide strategies on driveway safety.
Alzheimer’s Australia NSW is calling for cultural change in the community to help people with dementia live well, following the release of a new discussion paper, Living Well with Dementia. Released to coincide with the inaugural Alzheimer’s Australia NSW Living Well with Dementia Conference, held on Tuesday in Sydney, the discussion paper recommends a shift in attitudes away from the commonly-held belief that a diagnosis of dementia means people are incapable of making their own decisions, and focusing instead on supporting them to do what they want and enjoy for as long as possible. Alzheimer’s Australia NSW CEO John Watkins said the research shows people with dementia don’t want to be told what to do or not to do; rather they want to be supported to do what they want to do for as long as they can. “We know all too well how difficult and devastating a diagnosis of dementia can be,” Mr Watkins said. “But our research also shows that people can live well with dementia by staying active and importantly, being supported to maintain their independence and continue to do the things they enjoy.” The discussion paper recommends investment in making Australia a dementia-friendly nation, and increased investment in aged care programs and new programs that support people with dementia to live well between existing services and home support programs.

The team worked on their baking skills and cooked a variety of cupcakes, slices and baked goods, with the team excited to dig into the cakes, all for a good cause of course. National Call Centre Team Leader at Penrith, Cristina Alvarez, said they were happy to participate in the event. “We’re animal lovers here,” she said. “It’s a great cause so I feel really good about participating in it.” Ms Alvarez believes more people should try and participate in the fundraiser each year. “It’s an easy thing to do, and everyone knows how to bake something,” she said. “Animals can’t really help themselves so it’s up to us to do it.” Overall, the team raised over $250 for the RSPCA. The Western Weekender office also participated in the fundraiser and managed to donate $107 to the organisation. $107 is enough to provide shelter for five stray animals until they find their

Caiden said through surveying the community and through a series of workshops, they figured out what was needed and how to achieve it, while also learning a few things along the way. “I learnt more about people and more about how the government works, and how hard it is to make decisions,” he said. When asked by Councillor Greg Davies if she and Caiden would have wanted to include anything extra in the plans, Aneela knew exactly what was missing. “If there’s any money left we would like to see a climbing net,” she said.

Mental health support to Flourish Local organisation merges offices and aims to expand its important community services JADE ALIPRANDI
ig changes are brewing for community-based mental health and wellbeing support in the Nepean region. In a milestone for local mental health, not-for-profit service provider RichmondPRA has changed its name to ‘Flourish Australia’ and amalgamated its two previous Penrith offices on High Street and Henry Street into one centralised regional office at 232 Derby Street, Penrith. Also in the works will be two new satellite offices – one at Katoomba and one at Windsor. Flourish Australia’s Nepean Blue Mountains Manager, Charles Tabone, said the developments are with a view to providing more services to more people, and in a more efficient manner. “Flourish Australia has a positive and optimistic feel and is a good way of expressing what we’re all about,” he said. “We work with people with a lived experience of a mental health issue, and their families and carers.” Mr Tabone said the developments came at a busy time for the organisation, which includes being the successful tenderer for the NSW Ministry of Health’s Enhanced Adult Community Living Support Services initiative, providing additional assistance to more than 30 people. “It is truly rewarding when we see

Employees and clients of Flourish Australia. Photo: Melinda Jane members turn their lives around once they’ve accessed our community-based services,” he said. Flourish Australia is supported through funding contracts with the Federal, New South Wales and Queensland Governments. The organisation is also a major employer
of peer workers, which are people with a lived experience of a mental health issue who draw on their own experiences to help others with their recovery. Flourish Australia supports 5000 people across 66 locations in New South Wales and Queensland. “One in four people will have a lived
experience of a mental health issue at some stage in their life,” Mr Tabone added. “As Flourish Australia, we are providing vital local services and support where it matters.” For more information about the organisation, visit www.flourishaustralia.org. au.
It’s showtime Thousands are expected to attend the annual Penrith Show this weekend. To be held at the Penrith Showground on August 27 and 28, this year’s show is highlighted by a spectacular fireworks display and a concert from country music superstar, Amber Lawrence. Penrith Show President, Max Laughton, said if last year’s fireworks spectacular was anything to go by, this year will be particularly special. “It was as bright as daylight. It was an absolutely incredible sight to behold,” he said. The show is possible thanks to a range of sponsors including Arnall Trophies, Dunn & Farrugia, 2nds World, Spur, Nepean Village, The Good Guys, Fully Flavoured restaurant and The Western Weekender.

With traditional events carried out over the course of the day, the students and staff celebrated anyone who is affiliated with the college. Assistant Principal of Teaching and Learning, Michelle Deschamps, said it was one of McCarthy’s most significant days ever. “We have teachers who have been at the

Ms Deschamps added that while she has only been at the school for two years, she can’t see herself anywhere else.

epean Christian School students helped turn the first sod to start construction of their $1 million new library on Tuesday. Students picked up shovels alongside their Principal Cameron Nunn and Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies, who delivered $700,000 of State Government funding towards the project. “I am thrilled to join the Nepean Christian School community to announce the commencement of construction on their new library,” Ms Davies said. “A library offers a world of imagination, creativity, collaboration, learning and opportunity, and this is a fantastic example of the Building Grants Assistance Scheme making an impact in our schools.” The Building Grants Assistance Scheme is directed towards independent and Catholic schools to cater for growing enrolments, and to refurbish or build new facilities. Kevin and Carol Maling, who have lived in the local area for over 40 years, used their family as motivation to start the next chapter of their lives by owning their own business. While their grandson and grandaughter were already working at the store, the pair’s daughter now works there as a manager. Mrs Maling said family will be the key to their success. “Our business is going to be completely family owned and operated; everyone is playing their part to make the business a great success,” she said.

Mrs Maling added that she hopes the store will bring the family together, united in their desire to assist three of their grandchildren, who have special needs, to live happy and fulfilled lives with the care they require. “One of our grandchildren has a mild form of Autism, while two of our other boys have severe Cerebral Palsy,” she said. “It was our profound hope that opening our store would bring us closer together and help the family with the extensive ongoing needs of our grandchildren.” Mr and Mrs Maling hope to also give back to the community through promotional work for charities and local sporting teams. HISTORY
The Keg Restaurant. Photo: Penrith City Library
P
enrith locals love a good restaurant, and over the years we’ve had our fair share of them come and go. It seems there’s always been a market for steakhouses, or anything with a large, hearty meal at a good price. One clear favourite was Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon, which was situated in the Penrith Panthers Complex. Lone Star was famous for allowing patrons to carelessly throw their unwanted peanut shells on the ground. Although that had to be stopped due to workplace health and safety reasons, the Texan-style roadhouse atmosphere was fun and vibrant, with upbeat country music and neon beer signs.
According to adoring fans, no one made cheesy fries quite like they did, plus their chocolate brownies were out of this world. They also made the best ranch dressing ever! In 2011, Outback Steakhouse bought the site and, although they don’t allow you to throw peanut shells on the ground, it continued on delivering great steaks to the Penrith area. At Nepean Square, there was a popular restaurant called the Black Stump before it turned to Outback Jack’s Bar and Grill in the late 2000s. The site is now vacant. After it was Denny’s Restaurant, there was a restaurant named The Keg in the early 1990s, which was located on the corner of Henry Street and Evan Street, Penrith. The Keg served up some classic Australian cuisine.
And no one will ever forget when Sizzler filled the stomachs of local families from two locations, one in St Marys, and the other in the Panthers complex, where Silver Spur now resides. One family has since even started an online petition to get the restaurant back, so Penrith locals could again enjoy the allyou-can-eat salad bar and delicious steak, wings and chips. There are now only two Sizzler restaurants left in the whole of NSW. Last but certainly not least is the all-youcan-eat Pizza Hut in High Street, that was huge during the 1980s and 1990s. Imagine having an all-you-can-eat buffet-style pizza, garlic bread, desserts and drinks – yum! Have we forgotten any classic Penrith restaurants? Tweet us @wwpenrith.
Spirit of the Olympics This photo taken by Steven Bloodsworth in 2000 was of the Olympic Gold Chariot, during the Olympic Torch Relay celebrations at Jamison Park. Taken on September 3, then Penrith Mayor John Bateman was pulled along by a team of four horses, driven by a man named Steve Ryke.
One year ago in the Weekender’s August 28, 2015 edition, a community was in shock after the loss of two young lives in a tragic motor vehicle accident. Two boys, 14 and 17-years-old, were killed when their vehicle left the roadway at the Great Western Highway in Emu Plains and crashed into a power pole. A third boy survived the crash. We also spoke with three members of our community, who each shared their differing personal stories of struggling to get back on their feet while suffering from homelessness. Cheating website Ashley Madison was hacked, which exposed hundreds of people across the Penrith and Emu Plains area who were signed up to the service, with hackers stealing their names, credit card details and sexual fantasies. Penrith Panthers were itching to finish their season on a high, as they headed to Canberra to face the Raiders. It was Penrith’s final road trip of the year and they wanted to leave the nation’s capital on a high. In sport, two best friends from Penrith were about to take their sporting careers to the next level, after they were selected to be part of the very first Sydney Thunder Women’s Big Bash League team.

ith the conclusion of the 2016 Olympics, conversations in Australia range from pride for those who competed, to disdain at the number of medals won in relation to the public money spent. Whatever your stance, most of us can appreciate the astounding accomplishments of ‘Triple/Triple’ gold medal winner Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps with his record-breaking 23 gold medals. Many of us can also appreciate the accomplishments of those who didn’t win medals but overcame enormous hardship and difficult circumstances just to compete at the Olympics (such as those in the refugee team). There are many lessons we can learn from Olympians, regardless of their (or your) final ‘results’: 1. Being in business is an accomplishment in itself. Have some audacious goals, but keep in mind that your little steps along the way are significant. 2. Have faith in yourself. Even when it seems like you are failing or in a
slump, have faith that you can get through it. 3. Know your competitors. Find out what others are doing. Work out how you can do it better. 4. Be coachable. You can’t do it all by yourself – no athlete has ever become an Olympian by themselves. You need to look for people who can not only cheer you on but can tell you what you need to hear. 5. Understand the need for work/ rest cycles. No one can operate at maximum capacity at all times. Olympians understand that they can burn out and plan their performance so they are in peak condition when they need to be. We all need to incorporate rest and relaxation so that mentally and physically we can rejuvenate ourselves to keep running the race. 6. Use failures as a learning opportunity. Even Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps probably lost a few races along the way to becoming recordbreakers. Use ‘losses’ to better understand how you can improve.

If you are comparing stories on Instagram vs stories on Snapchat, Instagram has double the amount of daily users than Snapchat, and can target new followers thanks to the ability to search for pages right across the platform. Using Instagram Stories also eliminates the need to use both Snapchat and Instagram platforms as part of your social media strategy. You can also share as much content on a daily basis as you like, without over clogging your followers’ feeds like normal posts can. Post things like ‘behind the scenes’ and ‘sneak peeks’ at new products and services, which enables you to connect with your followers on a more personal level. Try different types of posts to see which ones work best, which can help determine what posts make it to your regular feed. To begin posting stories, update your app through the app store and click on the plus icon at the top left hand side of your home screen.
arlier this month, Instagram surprised us with yet another unexpected, but welcome function, which has once again proven why Instagram is one of the leading social media platforms for business. ‘Instagram Story’ is a new feature designed to share multiple photos and 10 second videos to your followers in a slideshow format, which disappear from your story after 24 hours. You also have an option to select content from your gallery, add text and free hand draw, as well as see who, and how many people viewed your story. Keep in mind that Instagram has recently updated its Feed Algorithm to be just like Facebook, it now shows posts in a non-chronological order, based on the amount of previous interactions a follower had with your content. As soon as you start creating stories on Instagram, they will appear on the very top of the feed of your followers’ homepage, with a colourful ring around your profile picture, so when your followers log in to Instagram, the first thing they will see is that you have a story available

MATCH PREVIEW
TITANS
TROY DODDS @troydodds
Y
ou only have to look back to the last time Penrith played the Titans to realise how much has changed at the Panthers in such a short period of time. The two sides last met in late May and it was a major slip-up for the Panthers, going down 28-24 at home and showing real signs of concern for the crucial months ahead. That match in round 11 featured the ‘spine’ everyone had dreamed about in the off-season – Matt Moylan at fullback, Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace in the halves and James Segeyaro at hooker (via the bench). Peta Hiku was in the centres (until he was injured early in the second half) and Sam McKendry started the game at prop – it was close to a full-strength outfit and Penrith wasn’t expected to lose.
Looking back on the game, it was one of the defining results in the middle part of the year that started to force coach Anthony Griffin’s hand towards the future. Slowly, he started a mid-season overhaul at the club that featured the inclusion of Nathan Cleary in the side’s next match against Melbourne, and the shift of Peter Wallace to hooker. It was a gamble bigger than anything Kenny Rogers could possibly throw out, but time has a funny way of proving people right. Griffin is now preparing his side for the final two matches of the regular season, and will then shift his focus to an assault on the Finals, with the club now all but guaranteed their spot in the top eight. Hindsight tells you that Griffin was going to win either way. Had the changes not quite worked, he would have shrugged it off as another piece in the puzzle we all like to call ‘next year’. As it turns out, he looks like a genius. The Panthers are one of the most in-form
sides in the top eight, having won their past three matches, and the points are finally starting to flow – a major problem for the side in the first half of the season. The Titans, who themselves have undergone something of a transformation since that Round 11 meeting, loom as Penrith’s biggest threat leading into the final fortnight of the competition proper. This Saturday’s game offers Gold Coast the opportunity to leapfrog Penrith on the ladder and potentially set up a Queensland blockbuster in week one of the finals. It’d also most likely put Penrith into the dreaded eighth spot on the ladder, depending on how the final round plays out. While the sides are evenly matched across the park, there’s no doubt that the Titans have a couple of individual gamebreakers that could really tear the match wide open. The obvious one is Jarryd Hayne – he’s already produced a few memorable plays since returning to the NRL a couple of weeks ago but you get

the feeling he’s close to delivering a full 80 minutes of magic. Metre-eater Konrad Hurrell is also a danger while Greg Bird’s style of play threatens to get under the skin of Penrith’s inexperienced team. While a home ground advantage will most likely see the Titans go into the game as favourites, I can see this one going down to the final minutes. Tip: Panthers by 1

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with the Masked Panther
ZAK’S GOING HOME » Opinions are split on Zak Hardaker’s
future in the NRL. While the Panthers are unlikely to extend his stay after his cameo appearance this season, some within the club believe he hasn’t been given a chance to show his skills and needs a strong, full pre-season behind him to prove his wares in top flight Australian rugby league. Hardaker’s selection each week is somewhat puzzling – his limited game time and lack of impact, combined with the fact that Penrith is unlikely to offer him a deal in 2017, means that it’s almost a wasted spot on the bench. There hasn’t been all that much interest from other clubs for Hardaker’s services and he’ll head home to England in the offseason, unlikely to ever return.
» More horror stories are emerging about
Corey Payne’s four nightmare months at the helm of the Panthers, and from what I can gather most of them are true. Payne lost the support of most club CEOs as well as NRL boss Todd Greenberg when he sent a bizarre email following a CEOs meeting, suggesting the whole process be overhauled and that he didn’t really learn anything. For a rookie CEO to send such an email put him immediately off side with other clubs. I’m told the NRL was doing handstands when they heard Payne was on his way out of Panthers HQ.
league circles suggesting that the round eight match between Penrith and Cronulla is being looked at by those investigating match fixing claims. Watch this space.
» Spotted: Zak Hardaker getting a hair cut at CT’s Hair in Station Street, Penrith.
» Spotted: Bryce Cartwright, Trent Merrin, Tyrone Peachey and Matt Moylan at High Street Depot last week.
» Former Panthers five-eighth Jamie
Soward hasn’t had the best of years, and now he’s been hacked on social media. His usually very active Twitter account has been taken over by ‘Bones’. Hopefully Soward sorts out the mess and gets back online soon.
» A strange rumour has emerged this
week linking Tyrone Peachey with South Sydney next season. Zak Hardaker
» I hear Anthony Griffin already has concerns about his job after Western Weekender Sales Executive Ali Elali proved to be a master coach in his debut year, taking the Brothers Under 9’s Division 6 four’s team to Grand Final glory over Doonside last weekend. Congratulations to the team – it’s a mighty effort and one the kids should be very proud of.
» The Panthers won’t actively search for
a new CEO, with Brian Fletcher taking on the role as reported by the Weekender last week. Fletcher is an excellent operator with the community at heart and the big bonus is that he doesn’t have an out of control ego, which has been an issue in the past at the club.
» Rumours are swirling around in rugby
» It appears almost certain that former
Panthers coach Ivan Cleary will land a job at St George-Illawarra next season. It’s initially likely to be a role alongside Paul McGregor but you’d have to say the writing is on the wall for ‘Mary’ after a poor season. Don’t be surprised if Cleary has the main job if things start looking shaky at the start of the 2017 season.
» The Panthers have missed out on
securing the services of strength and conditioning master Alex Corvo. With Ron Palmer being moved on next year, the club sought out Corvo, regarded by many as the best in the business. Corvo is currently with Brisbane and it’s believed he’s staying there next season.
» Penrith’s Holden Cup premiership
hopes received a huge blow this week when three players were charged by the Match Review Committee. All three players were hit with a Dangerous Throw charge following an incident in the 16th minute of last Friday night’s game against the Tigers. Jarome Luai, Jack Hetherington and Reed Izzard faced a combined total of 15 weeks on the sidelines. Izzard and Hetherington pleaded not guilty and were due to front the judiciary on Wednesday night, while Luai was disputing the grading of his charge.
» The Panthers will be giving away a
brand new car at next weekend’s game against Manly at Pepper Stadium.

anthers winger Josh Mansour believes Penrith’s young team of rising stars has what it takes to challenge for a premiership… this year. The Panthers are currently one of the NRL’s in-form teams, having won five of their last six games. The game they lost in the stint of victories was a golden point nail-biter against the New Zealand Warriors. Last weekend they all but assured themselves of a spot in the 2016 finals with a 40-10 thrashing of the Wests Tigers. Speaking with Extra Time this week, an upbeat and rather confident Mansour said Penrith isn’t just in the top eight to make up the numbers. “We can do anything, honestly. I have 100 per cent faith in this squad,” he said. “The belief I have in this side, I believe on our day we can beat any NRL team – I say that with full confidence.” Mansour’s strong endorsement will be music to the ears of Penrith supporters, who all season have dreamed of playing finals footy in September. How far the Panthers can go into the finals is a question that the Blues State of Origin winger was more than happy to answer. “We’ve got a young side but it’s a side

that’s very enthusiastic – they are always eager to prove a point,” Mansour said. “When we last made the finals in 2014 we were under a lot of adversity… but that gave us motivation to play as a team every week. “This team isn’t much different; we have a lot of young guys who want to prove themselves in the NRL.” 2016 has been an enormous year for the powerhouse winger, who in June made his long-awaited Origin debut before re-signing with the Panthers for a further two years. Next month, Mansour should also get to play finals footy for the second time in his career and, later this year, he’ll wed his beautiful partner Daniella Toutounji. “This year has gone so fast but I can’t complain to be honest, I’m definitely not taking the blessings for granted,” Mansour said. “Re-signing with this club for a further two years was probably one of the most important things for me. I love being here, we have a great team, coaching staff and Board – everyone pushes to be their best here, which I love.” After a turbulent 2015 that involved a disrupted pre-season and just 12 games played due to various injuries, Mansour is grateful for his opportunities this year. “Looking back on last year I had an injury plagued run and I knew I wanted to have a big pre-season, especially under a new coach,” he said. “I’m very grateful for what this year has presented.”

hen Penrith Panthers backrower James FisherHarris burst onto the scene in Round 1 this year, many pundits knew the kid was something special. 19 games on and the young Kiwi – chock-full of aggression – is already being likened to one of the most aggressive rugby league players to ever play the game – Gorden Tallis. The Broncos legend, who these days spends much of his time in the media, was such a dominating figure on all levels that opponents were afraid to tackle him. He wasn’t called the “Raging Bull” for nothing.
Take for example former Wests Tigers and NSW Blues fullback Brett Hodgson. In the 2002 State of Origin series Tallis, whilst playing for Queensland, performed one of the most memorable tackles in rugby league history when he dragged a young Hodgson several metres before eventually tossing him – rag doll style – out of the field of play. It’s a tackle that Penrith’s “Raging Bull” knows all too well. “I didn’t watch much league growing up but I remember him (Tallis),” Fisher-Harris told Extra Time. “I remember him throwing that NSW guy (Hodgson) over the sideline in an Origin game – that was my only league memory when I was little.” Fisher-Harris, who grew up on rugby union in New Zealand, was just six-yearsold when that tackle took place but it has stuck with him ever since.

Tough as they come: James Fisher-Harris While the now 20-year-old doesn’t purposely run out each week to be like Tallis, he also doesn’t mind being compared to one of the game’s all-time greats. “I just play my own game out there, that’s how I’ve always played but people see similar things in him and I,” FisherHarris said.
Penrith’s coaching staff are also big fans of the second-rower’s aggression on the field, even though he’s accidentally injured three of teammates in the space of a few short months. “The coaches haven’t really said anything about it… they just like the aggression. The boys are a bit scared sometimes, I do feel pretty bad,” he joked.

scandal
W
ith clubs fighting for survival in the NRL’s planned 14 team competition for the year 2000, there was plenty of focus on Penrith and its future. Merger talks with Parramatta took place, and it seemed that the Panthers’ chances of being included in the new competition were somewhat shaky. With the battle for survival on, the gloves were well and truly off – and during this period, a bitter war with the Sydney Roosters would erupt. Penrith believed that some clubs were claiming higher crowds than were actually at matches – a major issue given crowd numbers were part of the criteria that would help decide the 14 teams for 2000. During this period, Roosters boss Nick Politis called Penrith a “club in crisis”, words that would spark a major drama and scandal in the game. An angry Panthers boss Roger Cowan dispatched photographer Neil Billington to opposition grounds to photograph attendances. When Billington was sent to the Sydney Football Stadium to photograph a Roosters game, stunning revelations were made. Billington took photographs at specific times during the game and handed them
over to a “counting cross-functional team” who, using magnifying glasses, counted every single person in every bay of the ground. The tally the team came up with was compared to the crowd figures submitted by the Roosters to the NRL, and there was significant discrepancies. The Panthers leaked the findings to the major papers, and the story – even before the days of Twitter and Facebook – went viral. It became the biggest story in the game for days, if not weeks. Roosters marketing boss Richard Fisk fumbled and bumbled his way through an explanation – trying to claim that everyone must have been in corporate boxes when the photographer was snapping away. But then came the smoking gun – Billington had photographed a woman at the Roosters’ turnstile popping the same entry ticket in and out of the turnstile. The game was up. There’s many reasons why Penrith survived the 2000 cull and others didn’t – but the episode of Billington’s photos and Penrith’s shrewd detective work proved how fickle the criteria was and how it could be exploited. Had Penrith been excluded from the competition in 2000, they would not have enjoyed the same public support of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, which included street marches the like of which Sydney had never seen. But emotion means very little in a court room – who knows just how important Billington’s photos could have become.

Penrith Panthers are in real danger of missing the finals after going down to the Canterbury Bulldogs 28-22 last weekend. Penrith currently sit in ninth position on 24 points, with one round of the competition remaining. If the Panthers manage to defeat the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland this Sunday, they’ll need to rely on either Canterbury or Wentworthville to lose their respective matches in order to secure a finals spot. Fortunately for Penrith, they’ll know their fate before they hit the Mt Smart Stadium pitch. Last Saturday afternoon at a sunny Pepper Stadium, Penrith did their absolute best to break their unwanted four game losing streak but weren’t able to come up with a late surge to stay in the game. Penrith trailed 18-16 at break after scoring three tries in the first half through Zac Mackay, Moses Leota and Chris Aunese-Scanlon. Down by two at half-time, Penrith hit the lead early in the second half through Corey Harawira-Naera. However, the Bulldogs returned fire with a double of their own to regain the lead. The Panthers continued to push for an equaliser right up until the final whistle but weren’t able to get over the stripe.
» Holden Cup: The Penrith Panthers have secured the Holden Cup minor premiership for the second straight
year, despite losing to the Wests Tigers last Friday 22-14 at Pepper Stadium. It was the first time all year Penrith had lost two consecutive matches, which doesn’t bode too well heading into the finals. Penrith trailed 6-4 at half-time before the Tigers took control in the second stanza to blow the game apart. Try scorers for the Panthers included Christian Chrichton, Billy Burns and Jack Hetherington. In some worrying news out of the match, Penrith could be missing three of their best for the remainder of the season after Hetherington, Reed Izzard and Jarome Luai were all charged by the MRC for a dangerous throw.
» Ron Massey Cup: St Marys have
notched up six straight wins after they demolished the Hills District Bulls 24-6 in Round 23 of the Ron Massey Cup competition. A great defensive effort proved too good for the visitors as St Marys repelled several attacking raids. Leading 16-0 at half-time, Brad Drew’s men maintained their effort and composure right to the end to secure yet another great victory. Try scorers for St Marys included Adrian Davies, Geoff Daniela, Robbie Graham and Alan Eisenhuth. Davies kicked four from four. St Marys remain in fourth position and will battle the second-placed Western Suburbs Magpies at 2pm this Saturday at Concord Oval.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
Taking you on a musical journey KATE REID
T
here’s not many tribute acts that have played for the Queen, toured with Oasis and performed for huge crowds at Wembley Stadium. But over their almost 40 year career The Bootleg Beatles have managed to achieve the kind of success bands, both cover and original, could only ever dream of. Since forming from the West End cast of the Broadway musical ‘Beatlemania’, the group have gone on to perform more than 5000 shows worldwide. Joining The Bootleg Beatles at the end
of 2011, Steve White – aka Paul McCartney – is surely living every fan’s dream, performing the songs of one of his favourite bands live on stage to screaming audiences. But it’s a position that Steve never expected to find himself in. “I was playing in a band where we were just doing a mixture of 60s covers and songs by Roy Orbison and acts like that,” he said. “Somebody asked if we could perform a Beatles show... and somebody that saw the Beatles show asked us if we could perform another Beatles show, and it ended up becoming a Beatles show from that point on.
“From there I got the opportunity to move from that show into the current show I’m in now. So it was kind of accidental really, but absolutely wonderful.” The response The Bootleg Beatles have received from audiences has been amazing, especially considering most adoration is reserved for original acts. Steve attributes their standout success to the group’s focus on the smaller details. “You really have to work on video footage and spend a lot of time honing the bits that you can’t buy, I think that’s the key,” he said. “Because anybody can buy the equipment but most people can’t get the little bits right.”
With a childhood full of memories of listening to his dad’s Beatles records, followed by a successful music career made possible by the iconic status of their music, Steve admits that the only thing he would want to say to the members of The Beatles is thanks. “If I was lucky enough to sit down with them I don’t think I’d want to know anything,” he said. “I feel that they gave so much and I’d just like to say you’ve been a massive inspiration to me.” The Bootleg Beatles will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Friday, September 16 at 8pm. Tickets are $65.15. To purchase tickets, call 4720 5555.

hey say laughter is the best medicine, and few comedians would understand that better than Hannah Boland. Having had her fair share of tragedies, including the loss of two full term babies, and an ongoing battle with anxiety and a chronic pain condition, Hannah aims to bring laughter into the lives of those who are dealing with their own struggles. “When I was at my lowest I found that having a good belly laugh at something, however fleeting, reminded me of what it was like to actually laugh; a feeling I had lost for the longest time,” Hannah said. “It didn’t solve any of my problems, but it gave me hope that one day I might be able to feel like that again. That is the hope and reminder I want to bring to others.” Hannah performs under the banner

he Clare Valley is the undeniable home of Australian Riesling, the first vines being planted there well over 150 years ago and the region today recognised internationally as producing amongst the world’s best-of-variety. And a now-released stunner from one of the oldest labels in the Clare is interesting in that it’s not been sourced from a single carefully nurtured vineyard to result in a wine of such quality. Rather it’s fruit from a company vineyard in Watervale, blended with that from a number of local growers who have been long-term suppliers. This is the 2016 Leo Buring Clare Valley Dry Riesling, and further adding to its appeal is the price: it’s just $20 a bottle, and a wine that on pouring gives off delicate floral aromas and an earthy spiciness, while on the palate it is all about forward lemon and lime flavours, steely minerality and a rewardingly crisp and acidic finish. Pair it up with whole baked fish, or if you’re after something with more flavour, Thai fish cakes and an accompanying sweet chilli sauce. One to note: Hamish MacGowan had a confession when he released his 2014 Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon (pictured) mid this year – and that was that he had fallen into the trap of making a wine for himself in recent vintages rather than for his loyal fans, and so with his 2014 had gone back to a more balanced and food-friendly drop. And those loyal fans will be glad he did, for here is a traditional Angus the Bull to go with a good piece of prime beef: medium to full-bodied with ripe black-fruit flavours and firm tannins, Hamish blended fruit from a number of different vineyards. RRP $22.

OUT NOW WON T UO GAME
CINEMA Ben-Hur
Rated CTC // KATE REID It’s been over 50 years since the last remake and this week the epic story of ‘Ben-Hur’ gets a 21st century makeover in this new action adventure release. Based on the novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, the film tells the epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston) who is accused of treason by his adopted brother, and officer in the Roman army, Messala (Toby Kebbell). Judah finds himself forced into slavery and is separated from his family, and his love Esther (Nazanin Boniadi). After years away Judah returns seeking revenge but, after a meeting with Jesus, he ultimately finds redemption.
The film also stars Morgan Freeman as Sheik llderim and Rodrigo Santoro as Jesus. ‘Ben-Hur’ was directed by Timur Bekmambetov whose past credits include ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’. The screenplay was written by John Ridley, who was a producer on ‘12 Years a Slave’ and Keith Clarke who was a writer on ‘The Way Back’ starring Colin Farrell and Ed Harris. With the classic 1959 film starring Charlton Heston being so epic that it spawned the phrase ‘bigger than Ben-Hur’ this 2016 remake has some very large shoes to fill. ‘Ben-Hur’ is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith. For more information and session times, visit www. hoyts.com.au.
DVD Scream Queens
Rated MA // JADE ALIPRANDI
Dues Ex: Mankind Divided
Rated MA • Playstation 4 and Xbox One // KATE REID This week gamers can get their hands on the cyberpunk-themed, ‘Blade Runner’ inspired, action packed sequel to ‘Deus Ex: Human Revolution’. Set two years after the events of ‘Human Revolution’, ‘Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’ sees the return of Adam Jensen, but this time he has a new mission and some slick new accessories. The augmented former private security officer has teamed up with Interpol to help track down a terrorist group of fellow augmented humans. But Jensen is also secretly working with the Juggernaut collective to confront the Illuminati. Players will have the chance to become the ultimate augmented covert agent with cutting edge weapons, new abilities and increased combat skills.
With an all-star cast, ‘Scream Queens’ is unlike anything you have ever seen before. Wallace University is rocked by a string of murders and Kappa House, the most sought-after sorority for pledges, is ruled with an iron fist (in a pink glove) by its
Queen Bitch, Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts). When anti-Kappa Dean Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) decrees that sorority pledging must be open to all students, and not just the school’s silver-spooned elite, all hell is about to break loose, as a devil-clad killer begins wreaking havoc, claiming one victim, one episode at a time. A killer new series from the creators of ‘Glee’ and ‘American Horror Story’, each episode keeps you on the edge of your seat, with each character easily the next possible victim in this hugely popular
Beat the winter chills with a European Stratos Gas Heater
horror-comedy series. Viewers shouldn’t give up on ‘Scream Queens’ too easily, with the pilot not providing too much entertainment to begin with. A particular favourite is Emma Roberts, who seems to be in her element and makes the show shine. Humour-filled and suspenseful, the series puts a great spin to comedy, with viewers kept wanting more. Starring Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin and Jamie Lee Curtis, you won’t want to miss this one. Season 1 is available on DVD now.

UNREAL ESTATE AUGUST 31 • 8.40PM CHANNEL NINE
Nathan
Taylor TV NEWS
Ê ‘The X Factor’ will reveal a surprise fourth judge when the series returns to Channel Seven shortly. Audition scenes for the hit reality show have already been filmed, but Seven has confirmed an “underdog judge” is yet to be announced. Speculation is rife that the fourth judge will be Mel B after the former Spice Girl was spotted in Melbourne last month. Personally, I hope it’s not Mel B and producers go for someone a little more original. Ê Fans of ‘Married at First Sight’ will be pleased to know that the hit Channel Nine reality show is returning with a brand new season this Monday, August 29 at 8.40pm. Five couples will participate this time around including the show’s first same-sex couple, who will ‘wed’ over in New Zealand where gay marriage is legal. ‘Married at First Sight’ will also continue on Tuesday, August 30.
Ê ‘The Voice Australia’ coach Delta Goodrem has been announced as the host for ‘SlimeFest’, which will air on Nickelodeon on Friday, September 30. The popular singer will also perform two of her hits during the popular kids’ event. Ê New HBO comedy ‘Divorce’, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, will premiere on Showcase on October 11. The 10-part series centres on Frances who, after more than a decade of marriage and two children, has suddenly begun to reassess her life and her strained relationship with her husband Robert. Ê Channel Nine have announced ‘Unreal Estate’, hosted by Kate Langbroek and Cam Knight, will premiere at 8.40pm this Wednesday, August 31. ‘Unreal Estate’ goes behind the doors of spectacular Aussie homes and takes a look at their innovative designs.
Ê Popular Showcase series ‘Ray Donovan’ has been renewed in the US for a fifth season. The hit drama stars Liev Schreiber, who was recently nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Actor. ‘Ray Donovan’ also stars legendary actor Jon Voight. Ê This show received a million and one promos during the recent Rio Olympics but Channel Seven have finally announced that ‘The Big Music Quiz’, hosted by Darren McMullen, will premiere this Sunday, August 28. I actually can’t wait for this to hit screens. Ê Lastly, Channel Seven are considering pulling out of streaming service Presto. Reports suggest the network is reluctant to invest any more money into the venture it co-owns with Foxtel. Presto has been under major pressure from Netflix and Stan since it launched last year.

The Luke Priddis Foundation provides support and services for families in western Sydney with children on the autism spectrum. In the club’s Staff Giveback program, a budget of $18,000 was assigned to the staff of the club. They were asked to vote for the local charities that they would like the funds to be distributed to. LIFE & STYLE PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
With Mars racing through speedy Sagittarius, Rams are in rowdy cowboy mode! No challenge is too great as you approach life with extra enthusiasm. But it’s also time to guard against being too impatient, impetuous and impulsive. Instead aim to (occasionally) be cool, calm and cooperative. Plus pay close attention to your health and fitness, as the Solar Eclipse activates your wellbeing zone. You’ll find a regular routine will lead to more energy and productivity.

HOROSCOPES
LEO
This week, with the Solar Eclipse and retrograde Mercury causing commotion in your money sector, it’s time to take stock of your current financial situation and do all you can to be more educated about money matters. Later in the week Saturn and Neptune suck the wind out of your sails and you may feel dazed, disappointed or just super-stressed. Don’t despair! And don’t get lost in a quagmire of confusing possibilities. Instead, pace yourself and keep it real Cats!
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Your patron planet Venus is visiting Libra from Tuesday until September 23 so you’re in the mood to socialise, circulate and party like a pro. Confidence, charm and chutzpah are the keys to attracting admirers and making the most of social situations. But retrograde Mercury will confuse communication – especially with children, teenagers or close friends. If you are clear, concise, and keep a cool head, then you can still get your message across loud and clear.
VIRGO
Your power planet Mercury goes retro on Tuesday, so avoid signing contracts (especially involving real estate) or buying big ticket items (like a car or computer) until after September 22. When it comes to a family member, all is not as it appears. So be extra careful in the way you give and receive information. Clear communication will make all the difference. The weekend is a wonderful time to attend a sporting event, watch a movie, go to a music concert or visit an art gallery.
With the Solar Eclipse, Jupiter and retro Mercury all in Virgo, your perfectionist streak could get out of control as you strive to do things 100 per cent and are then disappointed when you don’t reach your exceedingly high expectations. Focusing on perfection can stop you from trying things that you may not be good at initially. And suddenly your world becomes a lot smaller. Be inspired by Ingrid Bergman “I don’t regret a thing I’ve done. I only regret the things I didn’t do.”
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
The week starts well as you get the balance just right between serious conversation and frivolous chit-chat. Then Venus vamps through your sign from Tuesday until September 22, so it’s a fabulous time to socialise and have fun, as you flutter your eyelashes, flirt outrageously and charm the birds out of the trees. But make sure you turn down the charm metre and grab some chill-out time on Thursday, when the Solar Eclipse stimulates your privacy zone.

Communication is the buzz word Crabs, so strive to keep the conversation flowing. And if someone sends you confusing signals, don’t hesitate to double-check. Love, peace, harmony, creativity and compassion are all highlighted at home, as Venus moves through your domestic zone. It won’t happen overnight though! You’ll find the more you compromise and fit in with family members, the happier you’ll be.
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
You’re keen to pursue a particular course of action but is a colleague or loved one on the same page? Double-check Sagittarius, otherwise you may find you are veering off in completely different directions. And with Mercury reversing through your career zone, things certainly won’t go according to plan at work so improvisation and patience are required. Motto for the week is from comedienne Lily Tomlin (born on September 1): “The road to success is always under construction.”

With a plethora of planetary activity in your hopes and wishes zone, make your dreams for the future as big and beautiful as possible. But a relationship with a friend or acquaintance is about to go through a tricky patch, as retrograde Mercury confuses communication and heightens sensitivities. Plus aim to get the balance right between socialising with like-minded souls, and spending time with a very special person – you.
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Has a professional relationship been going through a bumpy patch? Venus helps you heal old wounds with compassion and a diplomatic touch. But you may feel pressured and pulled in many different directions on Friday, when conflicting demands unsettle you. Things are constantly changing, so you’ll manage best if you keep your stress levels down and your schedule flexible. On the weekend, a positive approach is all you need to get others on side.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Pleasure-planet Venus transits into your travel zone so plan a relaxing getaway for some time soon. A destination with beautiful scenery, fabulous food and convivial companionship would be perfect! The Solar Eclipse signals a fresh start for adventurous Aquarians involving an intimate relationship or joint money matters. But avoid signing important contracts between now and September 22, as Mercury reverses through your joint finances and ‘money-from-others’ zone.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
When it comes to loved ones, it’s a week to count your Piscean blessings as you soak up the support that’s around you. If a close partnership seems to be going over old ground don’t worry. Under the influence of retrograde Mercury it’s time to revisit, review and rework a rickety relationship. But don’t let your vivid imagination get the better of you on Friday, when you could blur the lines between fact with fantasy.

Hudson HEALTH
A modern approach to a common pain
Toby Hudson is head of sports medicine at OnePoint Health 4732 5188 onepointhealth.com.au
ceded by a period of physical inactivity, overload (too much running too quickly), or in the case of gluteal tendinopathy (bursitis) it has been associated with peri and post-menopausal women. Tendons also do not like to be compressed, such as during stretching, massage, pushing or poking and this can aggravate a tendon injury. This can be seen by the
aggravation of a gluteal (hip) tendinopathy by prolonged compression during lying on the affected side in bed. A multi-modal approach to tendinopathy includes reducing pain and tension in the muscle, reducing any compressive forces on the musculotendinous and tendinous structures and initiating an immediate loading program which incorporates isometric exercises, heavy isotonic and energy storage and release exercises. Here are some simple truths about tendinopathy: 1. Tendon injuries do not get better with rest. 2. Tendinopathy should not be considered as a classic inflammatory response, they are more degenerative or reactive degenerative. 3. The main risk factor for tendinopathy is a sudden change in activity – too much too soon or too much rest. 4. Exercise is the most evidence based treatment for tendinopathy. 5. Modifying load and reducing compression is the first step in settling tendon pain, this may be with orthoses or reducing aggravating load. 6. Pathology on imaging is not equal to pain. Treat the patient not the image.

PET HEALTH
The use of rat bait around the home is very common to aid in controlling rodents. Unfortunately, rat bait toxicities in dogs are one of the most common toxicities that we see as vets. Most rat baits include green or blue dyes, however, dogs have poor colour vision and often think that these are food. If you know your pet has eaten rat poison, it is important that you let your vet know immediately. How does rat bait work? Rat bait kills by interfering with the ability of the body to produce clotting factors.
The hidden danger of rat baits
Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital
Rat bait does this by abolishing the recycling of vitamin K in the body which is a vital step in the clotting cascade in the body. This means that as soon as vitamin K reserves are depleted, there can be no clotting in the body. After rat bait is ingested, it takes several days to deplete vitamin K. After it is depleted, even the smallest trauma like a small cut can lead to life threatening bleeding.
What are the symptoms of poisoning? Signs of poisoning usually appear a few days to a week after ingestion. This happens because it takes a few days to deplete vitamin K. Signs include lethargy, pale gums, bleeding gums, coughing blood, blood in urine or stools and small bruises over the body. How is it diagnosed and treated? Diagnosis is made through history and based on a blood test that can check clotting times. If your animal ingests rat bait in the previous few hours, the vet can give your dog a medicine that will make them vomit; this allows most of the toxin to be removed from the body. An antidote for rat bait (vitamin K) is available and is given for 4-6 weeks post ingestion; unfortunately, this long course is required as rat bait can last in the system for an extended period of time. Sometimes rat bait is ingested without the owner’s knowledge and an untreated animal can suffer from severe blood loss; these animals generally require aggressive treatment involving blood and plasma transfusions. Luckily, rat bait poisonings can be treated. It is essential that you advise your vet as soon as you suspect that your pet has eaten any type of rat bait.

The Olympics closing ceremony has come and gone, and the torch is ready for Tokyo in 2020. Many athletes have written their name into the history books; Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps are two who come to mind. In 1924, a man named Eric Liddell was a gifted English runner who competed in the Paris Olympics. His story was told in the 1981 film ‘Chariots of Fire’. Liddell was a Christian. Just before the race he was handed a Bible verse from the book of Samuel where God says, “Those who honour me, I will honour.” Eric Liddell preferred to give up an Olympic gold medal rather than break faith with God! He modelled the priority in life that God calls all people to have. He would not allow anything to get in the way of his relationship with Jesus, even a gold medal! Although Eric Liddell was a strong favourite to win the 100 metres, he pulled out of the final because it was run on a Sunday, when he felt duty bound not to run. hooping cough, also known as ‘pertussis’, is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the lungs and airways. There have been more than 6,400 reported cases in NSW, this year alone. It is spread via airborne droplets from the upper respiratory tract, for example when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can take between six and 20 days from time of infection to when symptoms appear. The infection usually begins like a cold before the characteristic cough develops. The ‘whoop’, which is not always obvious, results from the deep intake of breath at the end of a coughing bout. Other symptoms include vomiting after coughing, and apnoea in children, where they may stop breathing for a period of time. A person is infectious for the first 21 days of their cough, or until they are halfway through a 10-day course of antibiotics. Whooping cough should be diagnosed and treated immediately. Although there are a number of tests for diagnosis, they are not always reliable and attainment of results may take some time. Therefore, treatment should not be withheld while waiting for test results. Whooping cough is the most dangerous in babies under 12 months of age. Complications of whooping cough in young babies may include: pneumonia, apnoea, haemorrhage (bleeding), convulsions, inflammation of the brain, permanent brain damage, coma and death. Immunisation is without doubt the best prevention.

ability to surgically remove an ingrown piece of nail long term. • If you have fungal toenails, we have the best cold laser therapy on the market providing a 90 per cent success rate in the healthy regrowth of fungal nails leaving for dead current popular topical therapies that only hold approximately 30 per cent. • We can also perform complete diabetic neurovascular assessments with Doppler ultrasound and sensory testing which give an accurate rating of your diabetic foot health in just one visit. We pride ourselves on being the best and our resources are often exclusive which is why we are confident in managing foot heath. Part of restriction in therapy in other clinics stems from not having the appropriate facilities and technology for the service. At OnePointHealth we possess the most up to date state of the art technology when it comes to your health and rehabilitation. Common musculoskeletal conditions treated in the podiatry arena include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, and ankle and knee instability. With an evidence based practice approach we strive to offer the best biomechanical assessment for a patient’s concern coupled with the most effective rehabilitation program. With the amazing facilities OnePointHealth has to offer we are now able to offer a multi-dimensional approach to rehabilitation. Starting from a conservative rehabilitation program of stretching, strengthening
through isolating specific muscles or muscle groups if need be. Utilising a moderate approach to therapy such as custom orthotic prescription, with devices made at our onsite orthotic lab allowing full control in the manufacturing process of your orthotics, dry needling with a specific target of desensitising active trigger points within tight muscles, with the goal of permanently reducing muscle dysfunction or pain. For a more advanced approach to treatment for conditions that are stubborn and need closer attention, we have the solutions. These include extracorporeal Shockwave therapy for tendonitis and inflammation, prolotherapy aimed to stimulate tissue repair in the form of a glucose and local anaesthetic injection and game ready rehabilitation ice compression system. OnePointHealth, your health under one roof.

HORSE EVENT
Giants ready to make their mark The rain didn’t bother the GWS Giants at training on Wednesday morning NATHAN TAYLOR
his weekend’s final round of the AFL regular season is shaping up to be an absolute beauty with the GWS Giants in line to finish anywhere from as high as first to as low as seventh. For the Giants, currently in fifth, to finish as minor premiers at the conclusion of the final round, they need to defeat North Melbourne this Saturday by at least 30 points and need all of the teams above them to lose. To finish in the all-important top four, GWS need to beat North Melbourne by any margin and either Adelaide or Geelong
T
need to lose their respective games, to secure a double chance in the finals. If the Giants lose to the eighth-placed Kangaroos and West Coast defeat Adelaide and the Bulldogs overcome Fremantle, it would mean GWS miss out on the coveted home Elimination Final. Fortunately, no matter what the results this weekend, one thing that’s certain is that the GWS Giants will play in their first ever AFL Finals series since entering the competition in 2012. Last week the Giants won their 15th game of the season, with a 129-37 thrashing of the Fremantle Dockers at Spotless Stadium. The emphatic 92-point win was GWS’ largest in their short history.
A career-high six-goal effort from Jonathon Patton was the highlight of the game, according to a thrilled Giants coach Leon Cameron. “Anyone that kicks half a dozen goals has had a pretty good day out, but it’s particularly pleasing for Jon because of the injuries he’s sustained,” he said. “He’s been in pretty good form for most of the year. He’s improved probably one per cent most weeks, but there’s no doubt he took a big step today.” The Giants will head into this weekend’s clash against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium with a clean bill of health after players came through last week’s match against the Dockers unscathed.
With finals footy coming up, Cameron confirmed he wouldn’t rest players for this weekend’s clash. “We’ll be full steam ahead, so there will be no holding back from our end,” he said. “We know any side that’s capable of winning nine in a row is a really good side.” The third year coach said the club will have to sweat on other results to see where they finish up. “There are so many things that can stem from this match in terms of ladder position,” Cameron said. “But we can’t control what happens with the other teams, so we’ve got to go 100 per cent on Saturday night ourselves.”

Event The horse whisperer: Daniel to showcase unique talents NATHAN TAYLOR
rchard Hills local Daniel Robinson has been invited to compete at Equitana Melbourne’s prestigious The Way Of The Horse (TWOTH) Challenge this November. Originally a 2016 TWOTH reserve, Robinson will now join two other leading horsemen to compete in the world famous challenge. The TWOTH Challenge is a unique fourday horse starting competition where trainers are specially selected to showcase their starting techniques and secrets on unstarted horses in front of a panel of international equine experts. Robinson, the son of champion jockey Phillip Robinson, originally hails from England and has grown up around horses his whole life. First training to be a jockey before he became too tall, Robinson moved to Australia to start and educate racehorses under iconic trainers like David Hayes, John Thompson and Chris Waller. Since embarking on his equine education journey, Robinson has dedicated his work to the training and development of horses both young and old. Furthering his skills and knowledge of
O
horsemanship by working under mentoring figures like Ian Francis, Robinson always strives to create the best environment and experience for any horse that comes into his care. Robinson has experience in racing horses on both flat tracks and jumps racing, and has ridden for prestigious trainers including Michael Jarvis and John Ryan before turning his knowledge of the equestrian world to the education and development of horses. Contestants, like Robinson, will each have two hours across each day of Equitana to individually show the judges their methods. They will be assessed on aspects including saddle and bridle training, desensitising methods, control both under saddle and on the ground, the connection achieved during the session, and the emotional and physical state of the horse during and after the session. Robinson will join fellow New South Welshman Damian Hall and Victorian Mitch Gollan, with this year’s TWOTH the first time any of the eager trio will be taking part. TWOTH will be showcased across the whole of Equitana Melbourne from November 17-20 at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Kicking plenty of goals Teen soccer star dreams of playing for Wanderers in the A-League NATHAN TAYLOR
emps Creek footballer Moudi Najjar is living the teenage dream. Not only does the 16-year-old get to represent the Western Sydney Wanderers on a weekly basis, but he also has the opportunity to train and learn from some of the best coaches in Australian football. Najjar is the youngest member of Western Sydney’s National Premier League 2 team, which is currently enjoying a sensational inaugural season in second place. Like his team this year, the likeable striker has also risen up the ranks this season, having started out in Western Sydney’s U18’s and U20’s team before quickly being promoted to the top squad in the NPL2. Recently, Najjar was asked to train and play a friendly match with Western Sydney’s A-League team – a moment he’ll never forget. “When I first started training with the A-League squad it felt like I was part of the Wanderers, it was an amazing feeling,” Najjar told the Weekender. “Getting to train with the players was a

big achievement for me and I couldn’t be prouder.” Just days after Najjar trained with his idols at the Wanderers’ Blacktown training base, he scored a memorable debut goal against local rivals Marconi. Najjar said he was left shocked straight after his scintillating strike into the back of the net. “Honestly when I first scored I was very surprised… I didn’t know what to do,” he recalled. “I decided to run over to the closest guy to me to celebrate. I was shocked and overjoyed, it was just amazing.” While playing in the A-League is still a few years off yet, being part of the Wanderers system at such an early age is proving to be very beneficial in the development of Najjar. Najjar is hopeful that with a few more years of hard work and dedication under his belt, he could be the A-League star kids, like him, look up to one day. In other Wanderers news, Kerem Bulut is back in red and black after signing with the club for the next two years. Bulut grabbed cult hero status during his last stint with the Wanderers but left for an overseas opportunity. He’ll return for the upcoming season.
Jessica Fox taking ‘selfies’ with students Story continued from » p.80 Fox was one of three former Blaxland High students to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, along with fellow paddler Ian Borrows and shooter Jennifer Hens. Having not been home due to various commitments since April, the 22-year-old finally returned to Australia last Wednesday – one week earlier than the rest of the Australian Olympic Team. With another two major competitions right around the corner, Fox said it was important to return home early to recharge the batteries. “I wasn’t planning on leaving Penrith again so soon but I’ve decided to race the last two World Cup events in Prague and Slovenia in early September, so I came back from Rio a week early to have at least one week at home in my own bed and to see friends,” she said. With two Olympic medals of the silver and bronze variety already around her neck, Fox’s attention will now turn to winning the final medal in the coveted set – Olympic Gold.

Wrestling
Champion to be decided in Penrith Respect and politeness now, but wait until they hit the ring at Penrith PCYC next weekend NATHAN TAYLOR
ustralasian Wrestling Federation (AWF) makes its long awaited return to Penrith next month with a huge all ages live pro-wrestling event titled ‘Celebration of Champions’. To be held at Penrith PCYC next Saturday, September 3, Celebration of Champions will be headlined by two wrestling veterans who are each celebrating over 20 years in the sport. Penrith resident and AWF Australasian champion, Dean Draven, will put his high intensity, hard-hitting wrestling style to the test when he faces off against one of Australia’s most celebrated and welltravelled wrestlers, TNT. The pair will go head-to-head in a fierce battle while, at the same time, paying tribute to one another’s contribution to the sport of pro-wrestling. “I hope all sports fans will attend this event and be part of this special night,” TNT said. “I will be bringing over 20 years of pro-wrestling skills and knowledge from around the world to Penrith, to battle my ultra-respected opponent Dean Draven for the Australasian Championship.

“I promise nothing short of an explosive and memorable experience for those in attendance, where I will be looking to walk out as champion. I hope many supporters from Penrith and surrounds can come and celebrate with me.” Not to be outdone by his equally experienced opponent Draven, who goes by the stage name of ‘Panther’, will also put it all on the line next weekend. “The Celebration of Champions event is a very special night in my wrestling career, and will be the biggest and best pro-wrestling event Penrith has ever witnessed,” he said. “I will be bringing everything I have to the ring in my battle against TNT and, in front of my hometown audience, I plan to represent Penrith proudly and leave victorious still Australasian champion.” In addition to the massive main event, a huge undercard will take place including an exciting Tag Team match, a bloody Hardcore match plus the always popular Women’s Wrestling matches. Penrith PCYC will come alive next Saturday, September 3 when the AWF Celebration of Champions hits town. Doors open at 6.30pm, with tickets starting at $20 for adults and $15 for kids. Around the grounds OLYMPICS: Penrith-born diver Melissa Wu finished an incredible fifth in the final of the Women’s 10m Platform event last Thursday in Rio. Wu’s fifth placing coincides with her fourth in the same event in London, and sixth place in Beijing. Penrith had nine athletes competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics, with kayaker Jessica Fox and swimmer Jake Packard each picking up Bronze medals. NETBALL: The Panthers Under 20’s Netball NSW Premier League team are through to the Grand Final after defeating the Sutherland Stingrays 55-44 in the Preliminary Final. The Panthers will now take on the UTS St George Sparks in the inaugural Under 20’s Premier League Grand Final. The Panthers will go into the match as outsiders after the Sparks finished the regular season as minor premiers. BASKETBALL: Local basketballers interested in joining the Penrith Basketball Association’s 2017 Senior Representative Program will need to complete an Expression of Interest form as soon as possible. BNSW have strict timelines for entry into the 2017 season and Penrith entries will be determined by the number of members who indicate an interest/commitment to these programs, even though selection trials will not be held until October. The form can be found at: www.
penrithbasketball.net. AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have won their opening finals match, hammering the North Shore Bombers 70-42 in the Qualifying Finals of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition. Phillip Aumann and Mitch Stevens topscored for the Rams with three goals each. This Sunday afternoon the Rams will take on the Camden Cats in the Semi Final. AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Ramettes have been eliminated from the AFL Sydney Women’s Division 1 competition after going down to the Western Magic 81-43 in last weekend’s Semi Final. Ivonka Olchowik and Jessie Burnham topscored for the Ramettes with two goals each. Despite making the post-season it was a rather disappointing season for the Ramettes. FOOTBALL: Western Sydney will now put full focus on the finals after a late equaliser from Mounties knocked the Wanderers out of the NPL2 premiership race. Needing a win to ensure that next week’s Sydney Derby was a winnertakes-all occasion, the Wanderers looked likely to take all three points until a controversial injury time decision. Ending in a disappointing 3-3 draw, the Wanderers will now host Sydney FC this Sunday in the final round of the regular season.

Fox’s ‘selfie’ mission io Olympic Bronze medallist Jessica Fox received a hero’s welcome on Tuesday morning when she surprised students at her former high school in the Blue Mountains. Students from Blaxland High School greeted the two-time Olympic medallist with cheers as well as hundreds of requests for ‘selfies’, to which the lovable Leonay local gladly obliged. Fox was so appreciative of the support she received from home, that she even passed around her Rio bronze medal and London silver medal for every single student to touch and hold. Speaking with the Weekender, Fox said she was overwhelmed by the amount of love she received from students and her former teachers. “It’s really lovely to be back here, I have so many great memories at this school,” she said. “It was a bit emotional and slightly overwhelming with the amount of selfies, but it was really awesome to see all the students supporting me and the other Blaxland High Olympians.” Story continues on » p.77
