Everything is on the line T

HE WANDERERS PLAY A “double points” match this week, hosting the Brisbane Roar at Pirtek Park in a top of the table clash. Given the position of both teams at the top of the table this game could be seen as worth “double points” for the Wanderers. It would be a huge boost if they could take three points and by that token stop Brisbane from claiming any. This match and the one other clash between the title contenders could

The opener was a screamer from Newcastle’s Andrew Taggart outside the box and Aaron Mooy got the Wanderers off the mark with a wonderfully taken free kick. Each team’s second goal, including Andrew Taggart securing his brace, came from set pieces that turned onto goal mouth scraps. A Wanderers draw left the Roar with a chance to extend their lead at the top of the ladder and they did the job against Central Coast Mariners, snatching victory with a 90th minute goal.

football this week. As she was an early multiyear signature, this perhaps signals a period of change in the women’s team as well as the men’s. On the men’s front the signings of Golgol Mebrahtu and Daniel Mullen were announced this week. Both players will be unable to play for the club during the A-League this year but have signed on until the end of the 2015/16 season. Where Mebrahtu and Mullen will be able to contribute immediately is in the imminent

and approve the sale of Western Sydney Wanderers to a consortium for $12 million. That consortium is led by Paul Lederer of Primo Smallgoods, founder of Pirtek Peter Duncan and Philippine businessman Jefferson Cheng. Cheng is already a strong investor in youth football in the area and Pirtek is the naming rights sponsor of the Wanderers’ home ground. Given such a fluid environment off the field the product on the field hasn’t deteriorated as much as might be expected.

“This match and the one other clash between the title contenders could potentially provide a six point swing to the men in red and black” potentially provide a six point swing to the men in red and black. What doesn’t help is a sour taste in the mouth after a draw on the road to Newcastle last weekend, especially given the levelling goal came in the 90th minute of the match. Leaving the timing of that goal out of the equation, the truth is the Wanderers and Jets played themselves just about evenly. Even the goals came in very similar fashion.

That gives the Roar a seven point lead at the top of the A-League ladder and a chance to build an almost unassailable lead going into the final stretch of the season if the Wanderers can’t take points this week. Popovic is trying to prepare the side for this vital match amid a tumultuous period in Wanderland. Foundation Wander Woman Catherine Cannuli played her last home match for the club after announcing her retirement from

Asian Champions League group stage. The games come thick and fast, including overseas travel after the first match at Pirtek Park on February 26. They will still require a settling period and will need to build relationships around the team while it faces an important stretch of matches. If there wasn’t already enough happening around the club it is expected the Football Federation Australia board will meet

The team haven’t reached the heights of the inaugural season that felt like a fairy tale at times, but they still find themselves in second place on the A-League ladder. The side has been thoroughly rotated to allow for the upcoming Champions League period and now the rubber is about to hit the road. Everything else needs to play second fiddle to the important match this Friday night. The Wanderers must beat the Roar if they are to retain the premiership. WANDERWORLD | 3

I

N WHAT SURELY MUST be some kind of statistical phenomenon, this weekend in the A-League could well shape the run into the finals. 1 v 2. 3 v 4. 5 v 6. It’s finals come early, in a roundabout way, and there is no denying what is the standout of that lot. Wanderers v Brisbane at Pirtek Stadium on Friday night will be a beauty. The A-League needs blockbusters like this regularly until the end of the season. The Sydney Derby and Melbourne Derby as well as other traditionally big fixtures have been planned out for around when NRL and AFL starts again. Wanderers v Brisbane doesn’t have that

tradition to call upon, but what it does have is the two best teams in the comp playing in front of what should be (and hopefully is despite the new active area rules put in place by the FFA this week) a fantastic crowd once again. The two go about winning differently but meet at the same point when it comes to successful mentality. Like Ridley Scott and Woody Allen. They both make great movies. They go about it totally differently, but by the end of their good flicks, you’re entertained. Brisbane are stacked full of players who know how to win in this league, and play pleasing football in doing so. Wanderers hurry, harass, and utilise the brilliance of a few to venture towards victory.

I’d say the Roar is in fact a better side away from home. When sides play at Suncorp they often sit off, get behind the ball and try and damage the Roar on the counter. It’s worked at different stages this season. But away from home, when their opposition is expected to come out with some sort of ambition in front of their own fans, they can really cut sides apart – case in point the 3-0 win over Victory in Melbourne when Kevin Muscat’s side where going OK. This one has a little extra riding on it, thanks to Brisbane’s great season. If the Wanderers fail to win, it’s almost game over as far as the Premier’s Plate is concerned. This game deserves a big crowd and a huge TV audience.

Fresh start for new recruits WANDERERS COACH TONY POPOVIC WELCOMED HIS TWO NEWEST RECRUITS TO THE CLUB THIS WEEK AS HE PREPARES TO MANAGE A DIFFICULT SCHEDULE IN THE COMING MONTHS...

T

HE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS have boosted their side with two new signings ahead of the upcoming Asian Champions League which begins on February 26. Earlier in the week, the Wanderers signed 24-year-old defender Daniel Mullen from Chinese club Dalian Aerbin as well as 23-year-old attacker Golgol Mebrahtu from the struggling Melbourne Heart to

predominantly play this season in the three Asian Champions League games at Pirtek Stadium. Both players agreed to a two-year deal with the club which will see them in the Red and Black until the end of 2015/16. Speaking before his first training session with his new club, Mullen, who also played with Adelaide United for a number of years, outlined why the Wanderers was the place to take his career to the next level.

“There were many things that attracted me here, first of all the coaching staff and the support behind the scenes is first class,” Mullen said. “Also, the boys here are very good and you can’t go past the supporters, it’s like playing in Europe every home game.” Fellow recruit Mebrahtu, who also spent time at the defunct Gold Coast United before joining the Heart, agreed saying the pedigree of the club is what stood out for him. “A chance to work with Tony Popovic and the rest of the coaching staff, and the chance to play in front of the fans is an unbelievable opportunity for me,” he said.

Mebrahtu, who was born in Sudan, didn’t seem too worried about leaving his former teammates down south behind. “These things happen in football, people move on,” he said. “I’m very happy to be here and I’m looking forward to working hard and being successful with this team.” Wanderers coach, Tony Popovic, said he was delighted to have fresh, young talent around the club. “We believe these two players have a lot of potential and we’re going to do all we can to get that potential out of them and take them to that next level,” he said.

A GREAT DAY OUT FOR PLAYERS FROM THE PENRITH RSL SOCCER CLUB

W

ITH THE ASIAN CHAMPIONS League due to kick off for the Wanderers on February 26, it’s understood the club is having a tough time deciding which foreign players will play in the tournament. Under ACL rules only three foreign players and one Asian visa player can be selected in the Wanderers line-up. With Shinji Ono guaranteed the Asian spot, that leaves Youssouf Hersi, Jerome Polenz, La Rocca and Mateo Poljak fighting it out for three positions. It’s likely La Rocca and Poljak will earn a spot with Hersi and Polenz fighting it out for that last coveted position.

In other news the Wanderers have revealed the ACL three-match passes have been selling like hotcakes with thousands of fans snapping them up. This week’s Wanderers super fans are the Penrith RSL Soccer Club who received a much-needed boost ahead of this year’s football season, taking home a $4,000 grant as part of the Hyundai Goals for Grassroots program. Penrith RSL’s supporters were out in force to cheer on the Wanderers at Pirtek Stadium during Western Sydney’s Round 16 game against Perth Glory.

As the selected Hyundai Goals for Grassroots junior team, Penrith RSL Soccer Club automatically received $1000, and for every goal the Wanderers scored during the match the club would receive an additional $1000 bonus. With the Wanderers thrashing Perth 3-1, Penrith RSL was awarded a $4000 donation from the car company. “The Goals for Grassroots donation from Hyundai will go towards buying new playing strips for our Small Sided Football teams in the eight and nine year age groups,” said Jim Harwood, Club President of Penrith RSL Soccer Club.

“Thanks to the Western Sydney Wanderers scoring a few extra goals to increase our grant, we’ll put the extra funds to good use and purchase new training equipment such as portable goals and bibs.” If you would like to be pictured in my column, simply send a pic of yourself in your Wanderers gear to news@westernweekender. com.au. There was no derby success for the Wanderers in the W-League last weekend, with the side going down 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

KEEPING UP WITH COVIC

Newcastle have got to be kidding GOAL keeper ANTE Covic gives us a player’s perspective on the Western Sydney Wanderers with an exclusive column every single week

I

T WAS A DISAPPOINTING end to what was a positive performance for our side against Newcastle last weekend. The Jets scored a great strike in the first half and we responded really well. We dominated the second half and a scrappy goal in the end is what cost us the full three points. I was involved in a rather “controversial” collision at the end of injury time with Newcastle player Adam Taggart. I didn’t hear the referee’s full-time whistle and I had to make a decision. I genuinely went for the ball, probably half a second too late. I suppose two guys running at speed was going to be very hard to stop. There was nothing malicious in it though, I can assure everyone of that. I was disappointed hearing that Newcastle tried to forward the incident to the Match Review Panel, I thought it was a poor attempt by them.

The first I heard of it was in the papers and I even had a laugh over it. If they thought there was going to be a suspension handed down after the fact, they’ve got to be kidding. The Jets probably felt bitter Joel Griffiths got sent off and that’s it. I think it’s a joke from Newcastle to even attempt that on a situation that was in no way malicious and was not a red card offence in the laws of the game. Onto something a little brighter, and I must I can’t wait to play the Brisbane Roar this Friday night in front of our home fans. Brisbane are playing some very attractive football and when they are on-song are a very hard team to beat. We’ve had a few injuries here and there but have put in some decent performances of late. It’s 1 v 2 and we’re playing at home and we are very confident. We’re not looking at how far Brisbane are

ahead of us on the A-League ladder, we’re just focusing on the fact that this is a game we can win and the ultimate prize is three points. Many experts think if we lose this Friday that we won’t be in with a chance to win the Premier’s Plate. It’s Round 18, if we start to think we can’t do this or we can’t do that then it’s a very bad mentality to go into the rest of the season with. We go into each game with the mentality that we can win each game, whatever happens to Brisbane is something we can’t control. There’s still a lot left to play for. See you at Wanderland!

LAST WEEK’S ACTION

Horror conclusion NEWCASTLE 2 WANDERERS 2

M

REVIEW BY JUSTIN TODD

PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

ATCHDAY 17 OF THE Hyundai A-League saw the Western Sydney Wanderers travel to Newcastle looking to string two consecutive wins together for the first time since matchday 11. The Jets have been in poor form recently and were dealt an early blow before the match even started when marquee striker Emile Heskey had to withdraw after suffering back spasms. Newcastle started the brighter of the two sides, pressuring the Wanderers out wide and delivering crosses that brought out the best in the visiting side’s defence. The Wanderers’ defence stayed strong and if Newcastle were to make their pressure pay it was surely going to take something special to do so. That moment of brilliance was supplied by Taggart, who unleashed an absolute rocket from well outside the box to give the home side a 1-0 lead. The Wanderers needed a quick response and showed their usual class. After a succession of free kicks, the Wanderers finally put one in as Aaron Mooy curled one

.com.au Construction Industry Training

perfectly over the wall to level the scores. The free kick was harsh on the Jets, as replays suggested minimal contact. A very even second half followed, and the Jets were once again on the wrong end of some bad luck for the next goal of the game. A goalmouth scramble that Birighitti failed to deal with put Newcastle under severe pressure, and just as Josh Brillante got his boot to the ball, he smashed his clearance into Beauchamp’s upper arm. No handball was given, and the ball agonisingly rolled over the line to give the Wanderers the lead. Western Sydney were on the brink of victory when, in injury time, Jets winger Andrew Hoole squared a hopeful ball in the path of Adam Taggart, who clipped the ball home to make it 2-2. That sparked an action packed injury time, where the Jets aimed to push on for an unlikely winner. In the final seconds Taggart was through on goal and on track to get a hat trick when Ante Covic clattered him way outside the box. What looked like a certain red card for Covic went unpunished as referee Ben Williams had already blown for full-time.
