WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS MELBOURNE HEART KICKOFF: SATURDAY 5.30PM @ PIRTEK STADIUM | TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 5.30PM | RADIO: ABC LIVE 5.30PM
COULD SHINJI ONO BE BACK THIS WEEK? PHOTO: MELINDA JANE
PREVIEW BY JUSTIN TODD
Don’t underestimate Heart A
FTER TWO TOUGH AWAY trips in consecutive weeks, the Wanderers will finally return to Pirtek Stadium on Saturday night to take on Melbourne Heart. After the undeserved loss against Brisbane Roar, the Wanderers failed to bounce back against a Wellington Phoenix side desperate for their first win of the season. The last meeting between the two teams ended in a draw, with Phoenix testing the Wanderers’ resolve throughout the 90 minutes.
creative gap in midfield, and Aaron Mooy seems far more ineffective when Shinji is not on the pitch. Tony Popovic opted for a completely different attack in the match against the Phoenix, with Tahj Minniecon and Labinot Haliti given rare starts. Besides that early chance the duo struggled to threaten the opposition, and unfortunately didn’t even come close to filling the void left by the injured Tomi Juric. Unfortunately for the Wanderers they are
against Wellington Phoenix. Let’s hope those words ring true. There is not much word on the current injury situation for Tomi Juric, but I’m sure the Wanderers medical staff will do whatever it takes to get the target man back as soon as possible. The possible return of Shinji Ono coupled with the timely return of the dangerous Youssouf Hersi will be welcome additions on Saturday when the Wanderers face-up against yet another winless side, Melbourne
Having said that, Adelaide had them on the ropes last weekend and they fought back and showed plenty of heart (excuse the pun). The win will come at some point, but one would think it’s almost impossible to come at Wanderland. The Heart may welcome back Jonatan Germano and Jason Hoffman for the match on Saturday, but unfortunately for them I’m predicting another week without a win and the Wanderers should win this comfortably. In fact, the Wanderers need to put a few
The Western Sydney Wanderers last met Melbourne Heart in early November, with the Wanderers walking away with a 1-0 victory This round was no different, and the Phoenix will be left wondering how they didn’t take all three points from this one. It was a match for the two goalkeepers with Ante Covic arguably the Wanderers’ man of the match along with the alwaysimpressive Nikolai Topor-Stanley. Injuries seem to be taking a toll on the Wanderers, as on paper they look far less threatening with many key names missing. The absence of Shinji Ono leaves a
missing those ‘game-changing’ players, the ones that will step up when the team needs them and deliver the goods. Word from the Wanderers camp is the possibility of a Shinji Ono return, which will put a smile on the face of every Wanderers fan around the country. ‘’Ono won’t play this week. He is progressing well and we are hopeful, if he ticks all the boxes, he will be available next week,’’ said Tony Popovic before the match
Heart. The previous meeting between the two teams resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Wanderers, with Shannon Cole grabbing the winner. The Heart are coming off the back of a 3-3 draw with Adelaide United, in a match where they were probably lucky to grab a point. They surrendered 70 per cent of the ball at home, which is unacceptable. They are in desperate need of a win, though I can’t see it coming against the Wanderers.
goals on the board and prove that they are a force in this competition. They may sit in second place on the ladder, but it is quite clear that the Wanderers are slipping and the intensity is not quite what it was last season. However, the right man is in charge to turn that around. Tony Popovic will know exactly what is needed to make the Wanderers fire. Let’s hope he implements it this Saturday night. WANDERWORLD | 3

Second chance HE MAY NOT BE THE BIGGEST STAR AT THE WANDERERS, BUT TAHJ MINNIECON IS ABOUT TO MAKE A NAME FOR HIMSELF AT THE CLUB...
W
STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR
Stylemaster is a Corporate Partner to the Western Wanderers
TAHJ MINNIECON
ESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS WINGER/STRIKER Tahj Minniecon thought his career was done and dusted at the beginning of the year. Following a season-ending foot injury back in January, the 24-year-old was sure his time in the A-League was up after a number of disappointing setbacks during a six-year career. But it was Wanderers coach Tony Popovic who showed faith in the former Australian Youth international to re-sign him for season 2013/14 and give Minniecon the second chance he so desperately wanted. “Last year Popa pulled me out of the Gold Coast and out of Queensland when I wasn’t at the best shape of my life both physically and mentally, so he’s really done a lot for me in my short career so far,” Minniecon told Wanderworld. During his time at the defunct Gold Coast United, Minniecon was regarded as overweight and out of shape, and he knew if he was to make it in the A-League at a strong and disciplined club like the Wanderers, he would have to go above and beyond to improve himself. Last Sunday, against the Wellington Phoenix, the hard yards and private training sessions finally paid off for the Queensland youngster. After subbing off the bench on four occasions already this season, Minniecon enjoyed his first start of the year. “I’m just happy I came off the field injuryfree because in the very same fixture I started in a game last season, I unfortunately succumbed to that season-ending injury,” Minniecon said.
“I must admit the memories of that last game against the Phoenix were playing on my mind but I had to try and focus on what was at hand.” Minniecon said he won’t be getting too ahead of himself and he doesn’t expect to start each week but hopes last Sunday’s enjoyable experience will be the first of many. “I’ve had a pretty horrible two to three years, so for me to be in and around the team feeling fit and up for selection every week is a bonus,” he admitted. “As long as I’m fit and healthy, and nothing’s wrong with my body, I hope to be in the team week in, week out.”

Stresses of sport ADAM Peacock is a respected sports journalist from Fox Sports
O
NE OF THE FASCINATING aspects of elite sport is the reaction to stress. Usually that is related to an athlete’s actions when the body is under immense pressure to complete the desired task. For mine, that type of intrigue is just part of it – another aspect which tells us so much about the make-up of a human is outside the playing field, when external forces such as media and fans’ expectations raise pressure. We see it every week across the globe, two great examples of which took place only days ago both here and in England. First, abroad, where Andre Villas Boas seemed like a marked man after Tottenham’s 6-0 loss to Manchester City. There was a response from his side, winning in the Europa League before a draw with Manchester United. The AVB unloaded, on two journalists in particular, forcefully getting across his point he felt the criticism overstepped the mark of fairness. Was the blow up warranted? Perhaps. Sensitive? Yes. Can he keep holding a grudge and have success? Worked for Sir Alex Ferguson, but as we know he was one of a kind in many respects. AVB might fizzle out quickly if he keeps that up. Back here we saw Adelaide coach Josep Gombau involved in a fiery press conference before the match with Melbourne heart. Aggrieved at a certain journalist’s take on the implementation of Gombau’s style at the
Reds – which has produced 0 wins since Round 1 – the Spaniard had a crack at the scribe to his face while the cameras were on him. Then the bizarre – Gombau made up a story he’d actually been offered two more years on top of his current two-year deal. Um, no. An hour later, the Adelaide Board put out a release saying no, in fact, he hadn’t. They made the point they like Gombau, and back him now, but there’s no extension. It needs to be taken into account English is Gombau’s second language, but still, you can only put his reaction and story down to a reaction to the stress building. Another example came recently when one of my colleagues behind the scenes at Fox got a call from an A-League coach (no, not Tony Popovic, thankfully). The coach, who will remain nameless as it was a private conversation, was pushing a certain agenda about who he thought would be good to get on our show. Now at the time, I couldn’t work out for the life of me why he called – surely he has better things to worry about – but a quick look at recent results made us realise this guy is a little under the pump, he wants to get out the message, through a certain player, that all is well. Which it might be, and fair enough for trying, but you can put it down to a reaction – albeit unique, and mild – to stress. We appreciated the call, and advice, but ignored it and went on with our business.

KEEPING UP WITH COVIC
Captain deserves respect GOAL keeper ANTE Covic gives us a player’s perspective on the Western Sydney Wanderers with an exclusive column every single week
I
T’S ALWAYS A TOUGH road trip in Wellington and last Sunday sure proved that. In Wellington, the Phoenix are a strong team, they had their full team back from international duties and are a team that desperately want to win games at home. After seven games of not winning, we knew they would come out firing. We had a few personnel changes to the squad on the weekend, and the guys that came in did an admiral job and it will be great for their experience and will lift their confidence. To come away with a draw, we can definitely take more positives than negatives out of this game. It was great to have Michael Beauchamp and Youssouf Hersi back in the side. Meggsy (Beauchamp) has been our captain since day one and I don’t think he’s put a foot wrong all last season, and the games he’s played in this year, he’s been fantastic.
To have Meggsy in front of me along with Nikolai was just like old times, we know what we’re going to get with each other and we’re comfortable with each other. The club brought in Matthew Spiranovic this year and he’s another quality central defender. I think Meggsy had a solid game and I’m happy for him, he’s the captain and deserves a lot of respect within the team. As for Youssouf, he’s a very dangerous player especially when he’s flying. He got a bit of a run against Wellington, which will do him wonders this week against Melbourne Heart. He’s very important for us and gives us another dimension going forward. Speaking of the Heart, we have another match up with them this Saturday night at Pirtek Stadium. We’ve had two tough road trips against Brisbane and Wellington so it’s good to be back at home in front of 18,000 fans (as
this picture shows, our fans are the most passionate and dedicated in the league). We played Melbourne not that long ago and they gave us a run for our money. Teams this year seem to lift when they play us because we were Premiers. Melbourne have been on a very hard run in their first eight games and in patches have played well. They showed some spirit on the weekend against Adelaide but you can’t take any team lightly. I know Johnny Aloisi is going to be itching to get that first victory and we’ve just got to make sure it’s not against us. See you at Wanderland!

LAST WEEK’S ACTION
Happy with a point WELLINGTON PHEONIX 0 WANDERERS 0
W
ANDERERS COACH TONY POPOVIC says he was proud of his players despite not walking away from Westpac Stadium with the three points on offer against Wellington. The Phoenix are one of the A-League’s cellar dwellers but held strong against the Wanderers, with neither side able to find the back of the net in the nil-all draw. It was the second time this season that the two sides had walked away on level pegging after a 1-all draw to open the season at Pirtek Stadium in October. Popovic would have loved to grab all three points across the ditch but knows walking away with the one point is still a positive result. “Today was what we expected – a really tough game against a side that was desperate for a win,” Popovic said. “We go away with a clean sheet and a point and move on to the next challenge.” Popovic was particularly happy with the way his side played given they were belted 3-1 by the Roar last weekend.
MTV Bathroom Centre
It was a game for the goalkeepers, with Ante Covic in particular saving the day numerous times for the Wanderers. The Phoenix dominated the first half, with their best chance coming in the 24th minute when Carlos Hernandez had a huge opportunity – but mishit the shot off his right foot. It was a huge let off for the Wanderers whose usually tough, holding defence let the Phoenix slip through. It looked like the Wanderers had grabbed the ascendancy mid-way through the second half, and should have gone 1-0 up with 15 minutes left when Mark Bridge was put into the clear, but his shot went over the bar in an agonising moment for Wanderers fans. Popovic said Phoenix are a tough team, and he was happy to walk away from the A-League’s toughest road trip with a point. He said it would be disrespectful to the Phoenix to suggest his side should have easily walked away with the three points. Without doubt, the Wanderers were lucky to escape with the draw as Wellington were the better side on the day.

IFA HAS RELEASED ITS final World Cup rankings before next year’s big tournament in Brazil and the mighty Socceroos are ranked dead last. Yep, Australia are the lowest ranked side headed to Rio at Number 59. The Top 5 countries headed to Brazil are Spain (1), Germany (2), Argentina (3), Colombia (4), and Portugal (5).
in the second half with two via penalty shot. Occasional A-League player Kwabena Appiah slotted both penalty goals in the 50th and 56th minutes while Jake McGing finished off proceedings in the 65th with a goal of his own. The Wanderers move up to eighth spot and will take on the last-placed Central Coast Mariners this Sunday at 4pm.
After Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie booted them out of their training base at Blacktown Sports Park, the Western Sydney Wanderers have found a new home. The team will train out of a nearby facility in another area of Blacktown Sports Park. I hear the players and staff are keen to catch a glimpse of Jolie on set… as am I.
The Wanderers W-League side have blown a 1-0 half-time lead to get smashed 4-1 by the Brisbane Roar. The Wanderers only goal came in the 43rd minute off the boot of Catherine Cannuli but that’s where the scoring ended for the home side as they were completely dominated in the second half against their opponents. The task doesn’t get much easier for the Wanderers when they face the top-of-the-table Sydney FC this weekend.
Wanderers supporters are popping up everywhere including at the new Caddens estate near Penrith. This week’s Wanderers super fans are Simon and Aurelia Vincent who have just moved their family to Caddens and are loving every moment of it. “The Blue Mountains views, rolling hills and vistas made the choice to move to Caddens easy,” Mrs Vincent said. We’ve got word a whole street of Wanderers fans are set to move in soon. If you would like to be pictured in my column, simply send a pic of yourself in your Wanderers gear to news@ westernweekender.com.au. The Wanderers National Youth League side had a huge 3-0 win over the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra last weekend. All three of the Wanderers goals came
In some good news for our ladies side, the Wanderers have signed current USA U23 captain Camille Levin for the remainder of the Westfield W-League 2013/14 season. Levin said: “I’m really excited and blessed to have this opportunity with the Wanderers. I hope to be an asset to the Wanderers, I know that there are a lot of quality players on this team and it’s a really great club so I hope to bring my experience here”. Levin made her debut with the side in their loss against Brisbane. I’d like to wish Scott Hudson from the Wanderers’ corporate team a very happy birthday for this week!
