WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS PERTH GLORY KICKOFF: SUNDAY 7.00PM @ PIRTEK STADIUM | TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 7.00PM | RADIO: ABC LIVE 7.00PM

On the hunt for Glory R
ETURNING TO PIRTEK STADIUM this weekend will be a welcome change for the Wanderers after two rounds on the road that yielded two losses. They host Perth Glory who couldn’t take three points against a 10-man Brisbane Roar last week but not for the first time this year, the off-field happenings for the Wanderers are in the news – with the addition of Shinji Ono to the list of A-League star movements. The loss of Ono at season’s end is going to be hard to fill and club management has
contract than his Parramata side. There is talk the Wanderers could have offered a better contract, but the possible imminent sale of the club has hamstrung the current management. New owners might want a chance to make a high profile signing of their own, but a replacement that equals Ono’s quality is not guaranteed. Looking to this week’s match, an uninspiring performance against Adelaide United will need to be put in the past quickly. That might be tough given the Wanderers
defensive presence than that and a side trying to score more goals will need to secure possession for longer. United’s early single goal was enough to secure victory because the Wanderers continued to sit back and allow United to hold possession. United holding a 55% possession rate but only a 27% territory stat means the Wanderers allowed them to hold possession in their own half and play the game at their own tempo.
states after a home match. Those games have resulted in three losses to Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory and Central Coast Mariners. The other long distance away game following a match at home was to Wellington Phoenix early in the season and the result there was a draw. At this point there is a clear pattern emerging and the Wanderers will hope they aren’t an aberration when they meet this weekend. In the Wanderers favour is a strong home
“This side isn’t in a groove at the moment, no matter what style of play is the desired outcome” suggested they will look overseas to fill the superstar’s void, possibly in Japan. The return of Socceroo Tom Rogic and possible departure of Alessandro Del Piero have also made headlines in recent days. Ono’s comments during the press conference announcing his departure will give Wanderers die-hards food for thought. He mentioned that he didn’t want to leave but Japanese Club Consadole Sapporo offered him a greater “vision” and a better
displayed tendencies present in many matches already this season – lacklustre attack, failure to hold possession on attack and generate shots on target. The contrast of being out-passed by United 355 to 252 while also only making 30 tackles to 33 shows this side isn’t in a groove at the moment, no matter what style of play is the desired outcome. A defensive and counter-attacking side needs to have a stronger tackling and
Many of these issues are solvable and Tony Popovic will surely be demanding a more suffocating press when the opposition has possession as a start. Pleasingly the Brisbane Roar, in first place on the ladder, had a similar stop-start month, so the gap to first is a manageable five points. It will encourage Wanderers fans to know that the Glory have struggled all year in matches requiring travel to the eastern
record and the chance to build a fortress-like record awaits them. This year’s seven home fixtures have yielded 16 points from a possible 21 punctuated by five wins. That record could be improved to 19 from 24 this weekend and would surely be at least a moat, if not a castle. The best bet would be a Wanderers win this weekend, extending the Glory’s poor away trend, especially since Popovic will be expecting much better from his troops. WANDERWORLD | 3

SHINJI ONO PREPARING FOR A GAME PHOTO: MELINDA JANE
STORY BY TROY DODDS
O-no! Star back to Japan IT IS THE NEWS WANDERERS FANS FEARED, BUT EXPECTED. SHINJI ONO, PROBABLY THE WANDERERS’ BIGGEST STAR, WILL LEAVE THE CLUB AT THE END OF THE SEASON...
W
ESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS FAN favourite Shinji Ono will return to Japan at the conclusion of the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 season and the completion of the Club’s AFC Champions League group stage and Round of 16 commitments (dependent on progression). Ono will depart the club following the expiration of his current contract in May 2014, bringing to an end his two seasons as
the Wanderers’ inaugural marquee player. Having spent two years away from his wife and two young children who have remained in Japan, Shinji has expressed his desire to see out his career in his home country to be closer to his young family. In June, Ono will link up with J-2 club Consadole Sapporo to play out the remainder of the season in Japan as the club chases promotion to the J-League.
Stylemaster is a Corporate Partner to the Western Wanderers
Western Sydney Wanderers Executive Chairman, Lyall Gorman expressed the Club’s utmost admiration and affection for Shinji. “Shinji is the ultimate professional on and off the field and the ultimate gentleman. He will leave us with long lasting memories of his time with our Club,” said Gorman. “He is committed to the Wanderers until the end of his contract in May this year which will see him help lead our club in its 2014 Asian Champions League debut and hopefully a second Hyundai A-League Finals Series.” Gorman said no matter what happens in the future, Shinji Ono will be remembered
for being part of the club during an exciting and rewarding period. “Shinji Ono will forever be remembered in our club folklore and on behalf of the entire Wanderers family we look forward to making the final months of his time in Australia with the Wanderers a memorable one,” he said. “He will always be a part of the Wanderers family and story as history records it over time. We wish him every success in his return to his homeland and thank him for his incredible contribution to our club’s birth and journey thus far.” It is understood Ono fielded the offer from Japan last November.

T
INKERMAN. FOR SOME MANAGERS it’s about as insulting as it gets. It suggests the said manager isn’t fully aware about how to do his job. Messing with his starting line-up for the sake of it, leaving out players who everyone else expects to walk back into the side after a good performance. Tony Popovic is doing just that. For the majority of the past few games, Popovic has made 5-6 changes from game to game. Everyone in the Wanderers squad is getting a chance, sometimes out of position (Dean Heffernan, right back!) and even two 16-year-olds have had a crack. Why? Injuries are just a small part of the
reason, but not knowing his best side ISN’T. Without doubt, he knows his top XI, and in my opinion, he’s doing as much as he can to ensure he has that best XI at full capacity for the games that really matter. The Asian Champions League is on the horizon, and he’s used these recent three games in a week situations to firstly see how his players react to being in and out of the team and more importantly, keeping them fresh. Mind you, it’s nothing new. Numerous times last season – especially when long haul trips to Wellington and Perth were in order, he left out certain players – look what ended up happening over the second half of the season.
It seems to be working again at the minute. Aside from a scurrilous little rumour about Aaron Mooy wanting out a few weeks back, there’s been no evidence of discontent emanating from the dressing room. That is paramount. Look at Perth Glory – Ali Edwards ended up getting the sack when the powers above found out about a dressing room divided. So Popovic knows exactly what he is doing. Rotating the squad, yes. Tinkering. No. There’s a big difference and we won’t know if it was the right move until we get to early May. See you next week.

KEEPING UP WITH COVIC
Farewell to a true gentleman GOAL keeper ANTE Covic gives us a player’s perspective on the Western Sydney Wanderers with an exclusive column every single week
O
UR RECENT FORM HAS obviously been disappointing. You never like losing and now two on the trot – two away games , in a very busy schedule that we’ve had. We don’t want to make any excuses, we rely on our depth and the players that we’ve got and we’ve fallen a little bit short over the last couple of games and we need to turn that around starting this week at home. But it’s obviously disappointing. Against Melbourne I thought we lost our shape and we crumbled after we coughed up one goal. Against Adelaide I thought it was a better performance. We held our own after a lot of changes and a lot of injuries. We ended up losing to a goal that should never have stood. The ball was out and when the play went on, I actually just assumed that it was going to be a goal kick or a corner. I was stunned that it was called a goal.
I was very disappointed and very angry at the time because it wasn’t as if the ball was just on the edge of the white line, it was well and truly out. Without question we want to get back into the winner’s circle this weekend. We’ve got a week between games, which is great, as it seems like a long time since we’ve had that. We’re playing at home – we’re again playing a decent side in Perth who have had some good results and it’s not going to be easy. We’ve found out in the last few weeks that if you’re not playing at the top of your game, here in the A-League, you can suffer losses against anybody. We’ve got to turn that trend around and put in a performance that we can be proud of. As long as our performances are good and our ambition is to go out there and win, then we can beat anybody.
After the recent losses it has been back to business as usual at training. You would love to be able to say you could go through a season without losing but realistically that’s very rare to happen so you know you’re going to come across tough patches during the season. If you start thinking you’ve got to start changing things that’s when you can start upsetting the situation even more. We have been training just as hard and focusing on the things we usually do because we believe in the way that we play and we believe that if we do play the way that Poppa wants us to play and we execute it during the games we are very hard to beat. Off the field, I was disappointed to hear Shinji Ono is moving on. He’s a brilliant footballer. He does brilliant things on the training ground and on the field and on top of that he is an absolute gentleman.

LAST WEEK’S ACTION
Wanderers go down ADELAIDE 1 WANDERERS 0
A
ANTE COVIC PHOTO: MELINDA JANE
REVIEW BY JUSTIN TODD
FTER A BITTERLY DISAPPOINTING result against Melbourne Victory, the Wanderers were looking to get back into the winner’s circle against an Adelaide side that were unbeaten in their last five matches. The visitors got off to the worst possible start, albeit under very dubious circumstances. Adelaide striker Bruce Djite stole the ball from the hands of Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic when the ball appeared to be over the by-line. Djite’s pass found Carrusca and, making light of a tight angle, he slotted a left-footer from about 10 metres. The early goal seemed to give the hosts the early confidence boost they needed, and the goal scorer Carrusca took control of the match and dictated play. One brilliant Carrusca through-ball put his teammate Jeronimo on a path to goal but the striker’s shot slid past the far post – a scenario repeated some 20 minutes later. The Wanderers were completely outplayed for the first half an hour, and things didn’t really change until Adelaide lost dangerous
winger Michael Zullo to a leg injury. The injury seemed to spark the visitors into life as they created some chances of their own, most notably an audacious bicycle kick from Shinji Ono that looped over the bar. Despite the Wanderers’ best efforts, Adelaide deservedly held their lead at the break and came out in the second half the better team. Carrusca was the shining light in the second half, as he was in the first, and controlled proceedings. The Reds have now beaten leaders Brisbane and second-placed Wanderers in consecutive games in a six match unbeaten streak. Western Sydney coach Tony Popovic said Carrusca’s goal was dubious. “We all felt the ball was out,” he said. “You would hope the officials would get that right so early in the game but they made a call on it and you can’t change that.” Even though the game’s only goal came in very harsh circumstances, the Wanderers won’t feel too hard done by as they were clearly outplayed. This was the Wanderers’ third game in eight days, and it might have been a case of running out of legs in a very demanding period.

Stripping points is not the answer WALLY the Wanderer has all the gossip on the Western Sydney Wanderers
F
AIRFAX’S REPORT ON MONDAY that a number of Wanderers fans were under investigation for an assault on a Sydney FC fan proves why the FFA’s threat of stripping points from the club is ridiculous. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that a group of teenage Sydney FC fans was attacked by a group of youths wielding baseball bats at Prince Alfred Park in Surry Hills on Saturday before the A-League match between Sydney FC and Central Coast Mariners. Several witnesses told Fairfax Media that they identified a number of the alleged perpetrators as members of a Wanderers supporter group called “AMOK”. The bottom line here is that you can’t strip the club of points because a couple of idiots caused trouble while the team was half way across the country preparing in Adelaide. There needs to be a solution to the crowd problems being caused by a minority, but stripping points is not it.
indication of the strength of the Hyundai A-League,” Gallop said. “This growth comes off the back of a record-breaking 2012/13 season for the Hyundai A-League and shows that football is finding a place in the Australian sporting landscape.”
The Hyundai A-League’s spectacular start to the season continued last weekend when the 1,000,000th fan for 2013/14 passed through the gates. The 2013/14 milestone set a new record for the shortest amount of time taken to get 1,000,000 fans through the turnstiles in the history of the Hyundai A-League. Football Federation Australia CEO, David Gallop, said that it was a fantastic achievement for football in Australia and New Zealand. “To reach the 1,000,000th fan for the 2013/14 season in round 15 is another
The Western Sydney Wanderers’ first foray into the AFC Champions League (ACL) begins in just over a month when Ulsan Hyundai visit Parramatta Stadium on February 26. A first year club qualifying for their continental competition is unheard of in world football and the journey will continue when Kawasaki Frontale and Guizhou Renhe visit on March 19 and April 22 respectively. To ensure you don’t miss out on these historic matches the Wanderers will be releasing a three-match ACL package so you can be there at every game.
The Wanderers’ W-League side grabbed a late equaliser last weekend to share the points yet again. This time, it was against Melbourne Victory with 1-1 the final score. A second-half brace from Adelaide United marksman Anthony Costas piloted the Reds to a 3-1 Foxtel National Youth League victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers at Thebarton Oval on Saturday. This week’s Wanderers super fan is Steven Barbara. Steven is a dedicated Wanderers fan. If you would like to be pictured in my column, simply email a picture to news@ westernweekender.com.au.
